  1. Well, if for some reason you are feeling a bit lost when we come to this particular part of the narrative,

  2. let me catch us all up.

  3. You'll be helped to know that we have reached the point in Mark's gospel

  4. where he is describing the final hours leading up to Jesus' crucifixion.

  5. In fact, for the most part, most of the events in chapter 14

  6. occur between sunset on Thursday of the Passion Week

  7. and about 3 a.m. on Friday, the day of Jesus' crucifixion.

  8. So everything we read, with the exception of the event in Bethany at the very beginning of the chapter,

  9. everything between that and the end of the chapter is really in about a nine-hour time frame.

  10. That's where it's unfolding as far as the narrative is concerned.

  11. And we don't need to underestimate the significance of this particular section of Mark's gospel.

  12. So far, it's already been revealed to us that Jesus is the true Passover lamb.

  13. We have seen him institute and establish the Lord's Supper,

  14. which is so very important to us now.

  15. We've seen, again, his promise of resurrection.

  16. We've seen his promise of restoration for his disciples who would inevitably fail.

  17. And we've seen him persevere in dramatic fashion

  18. through his final and greatest temptation in the Garden of Gethsemane.

  19. And everything that the Bible tells us about Jesus is important.

  20. I don't mean to insinuate that that's not true.

  21. But only a careless reader would come to this section and miss the significance of what we've discovered in these last few studies.

  22. All of the buildup that we have seen in Mark's gospel, or any of the gospels for that matter,

  23. all of the buildup really finds its purpose and intent and ultimate significance in this section

  24. as we see, and continuing forward to the end of the gospel,

  25. as we see the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus come to be.

  26. Now, our text for today is not complex at all.

  27. It's not difficult to understand.

  28. The point of the passage is actually straightforward.

  29. I'm going to go ahead and tell you what it is.

  30. Basically, it's this.

  31. Everything that Jesus has told his disciples that would take place

  32. is now beginning to take place exactly as he said it would.

  33. That's really the significance of this section.

  34. It doesn't really go much deeper than that.

  35. Of course, there's other lessons that we're going to draw from this and important dynamics of this.

  36. But the overall picture of this narrative here is that Jesus has been saying for quite some time,

  37. this was going to happen.

  38. And now, before the very eyes of the disciples, they're seeing Jesus' words come to fruition.

  39. There was no more waiting.

  40. His hour has come, and it has come in perfect fulfillment to the scriptures.

  41. Think about all the things he's prophesied now.

  42. Even in Mark chapter 14, we've seen him prophesy of a betrayer, which is revealed here.

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  43. At least for the disciples, it is exposed as Judas Iscariot.

  44. Up to this point, they didn't realize that.

  45. Now they know.

  46. It's fulfilled.

  47. We have seen Jesus time and again declare that he would be delivered into the hands of the Jewish leaders.

  48. That's precisely what happens in this text.

  49. He even said in a previous passage a couple of weeks ago that all of the disciples would fall away.

  50. And when we get towards the end of this particular section, we find it stated very plainly,

  51. they all forsook him.

  52. They all fled.

  53. They all ran.

  54. And so Jesus' hour has come.

  55. Just as he prayed in the garden that this hour would pass, then he resolves to follow faithfully,

  56. as always, the will of the Father, and the hour has begun.

  57. And that's where we see it unfolding.

  58. But before we jump into the verses, there's one more thing I want to point out,

  59. perhaps the most significant part of this.

  60. Each element of this narrative points to the scandal of it.

  61. You want you to think about what we just read.

  62. They took Jesus into custody in the middle of the night.

  63. It's well after midnight now.

  64. It was close to midnight when Jesus and the disciples went to the Garden of Gethsemane.

  65. We know he's been praying in the garden for at least one hour, probably two.

  66. And so we're thinking one or two in the morning, and these men come to arrest him.

  67. Isn't that a suspect?

  68. Isn't that a bit unusual?

  69. Doesn't that lean towards the fact that maybe there's a bit of a scandal happening here,

  70. that he needs to be arrested in the middle of the night?

  71. Isn't that a crowd of officers armed to the teeth?

  72. Ambush him like a modern sting operation?

  73. It's not like they send a few of the temple leaders to go and persuade him to come in and turn himself in.

  74. That's not happening.

  75. It's actually a crowd of people.

  76. They apprehend him as if it's a dangerous fugitive that has put the people of Jerusalem at great risk.

  77. But what had Jesus done to deserve that?

  78. Nothing.

  79. This is the man who took little babies and put them on his knee.

  80. This is the man who spent the last three years going throughout Galilee and Judea,

  81. basically eradicating disease.

  82. This is the man who has spent day after day in the temple with these other people,

  83. no threat to anyone, simply teaching the truth.

  84. This is the man who has spent the last three years perfectly obeying and teaching the very law of God.

  85. What has he done to deserve this type of treatment in his arrest?

  86. Well, nothing.

  87. And that's the point.

  88. He was treated as a criminal, though he had committed no crime.

  89. And just as Isaiah 53 had prophesied, Jesus was, quote, numbered with the transgressors.

  90. What Isaiah means there is he was counted, reckoned as a criminal,

  91. reckoned, treated as a transgressor,

  92. so that his death, in his death, by his death,

  93. transgressors could actually be declared righteous before God.

  94. And if you're wondering why all four Gospels find it necessary to detail the events of Jesus' actual arrest,

  95. this is it.

  96. He was numbered with the transgressors so that he could save transgressors.

  97. That's the significance of this particular part of the narrative.

  98. Let's work through it together.

  99. The first thing that I want to point out to you is very simple.

  100. Jesus is betrayed.

  101. He's betrayed.

  102. He's betrayed.

  103. Look at verse 43.

  104. Immediately while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve,

  105. and with him a crowd with swords and clubs from the chief priest and the scribes and the elders.

  106. Let's just mention the people that are participating in this verse quickly.

  107. The chief priest and scribes and elders,

  108. they were the three groups that made up the great Sanhedrin.

  109. That's the ruling body of the Jews, both civically and religiously,

  110. underneath the jurisdiction of Rome, of course,

  111. but they were the ones that ruled over the Jewish people.

  112. Instructions to arrest Jesus, in other words, came all the way from the top.

  113. So the Sanhedrin provide the civic authority for Jesus to be arrested legally.

  114. And that's important at least to their cause.

  115. Now, they don't have just cause to arrest him,

  116. but the fact that it's coming from the Sanhedrin actually makes the actual apprehension of Jesus,

  117. taking him into custody, legal.

  118. The fact that we see that there are servants of the high priest

  119. means that there's probably an actual written warrant

  120. accompanying this crowd of soldiers and servants.

  121. So when they approach Jesus and the disciples,

  122. they have at their disposal the very warrant for his arrest, so to speak,

  123. or at least for his custody to be questioned.

  124. So we have that.

  125. The crowd with swords and clubs consist of temple police,

  126. civil servants who served at the discretion of the Sanhedrin.

  127. If the Sanhedrin provides the authority,

  128. the temple police provide the muscle.

  129. These are the scobies that have come in with the muscle strapped,

  130. ready to take on these disciples if they need to take on the disciples.

  131. If there is an uproar, perhaps, which is what they feared,

  132. the muscle would be of great aid.

  133. Now, let me just say, incidentally, that if you were to flip over to John 18,

  134. maybe you would want to do that this afternoon,

  135. you'll discover that their efforts in providing any kind of muscle

  136. was actually very futile.

  137. Jesus, by just speaking the word and identifying himself,

  138. supernaturally pushes back so that they all fall to the ground.

  139. It's really quite an amazing picture.

  140. You can study that on your own.

  141. That's just a by the way.

  142. And then, of course, Judas is the other participant here.

  143. Judas Iscariot, one of the 12, he's the architect of the whole plan.

  144. He was responsible for instructing the soldiers on where Jesus was.

  145. He was responsible for identifying who Jesus was.

  146. And he was even responsible, according to Mark's words,

  147. for the plan and precautions that they were to take

  148. as they sought to constrain the Lord.

  149. So Mark reminds us here that Judas was one of the 12 disciples,

  150. heightening the sense of betrayal that Jesus endured.

  151. And I want to remind you that Jesus had said this is precisely what would happen.

  152. Look back just a few verses in Mark 14.

  153. Look at verse 18 with me.

  154. And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said,

  155. truly I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.

  156. And they began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another,

  157. is it I?

  158. And he said to them, it is one of the 12.

  159. He even narrows it down to that.

  160. One who is dipping bread into the dish with me.

  161. So Jesus has said this is going to happen.

  162. Now it's happening.

  163. He's also said that he would be delivered to this specific group of people.

  164. Remember Mark chapter 10?

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  165. Jesus says, we're going up to Jerusalem.

  166. The son of man will be delivered over to the chief priest and the scribes,

  167. and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles.

  168. So all of this that's unfolding here before our eyes

  169. and before the eyes of the disciples is just the fulfillment of Jesus' own word.

  170. And Jesus' own word is the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies about him.

  171. That's significant here.

  172. This is not just something that happened to take place and we're reading it back into the text of Scripture.

  173. No, this is the perfect fulfillment of God's word.

  174. It's the perfect fulfillment of Christ's words.

  175. And there's no variant in the way that it unfolded.

  176. Now let's look a little closer at the act of betrayal itself.

  177. Verse 44.

  178. Now the betrayer, he's not referred to as Judas any longer.

  179. He's just the betrayer.

  180. Let's think for a moment about the reasons for this betrayal.

  181. The need for a signal was because the soldiers probably were somewhat unfamiliar with Jesus.

  182. They might have known who he was and had perhaps seen him in the temple.

  183. But they're coming in the middle of the night.

  184. There's no electricity in those days.

  185. It's the cover of night.

  186. Perhaps there is light from the moon as we would understand the Passover

  187. and how the feast and things like that would take place.

  188. It would be associated with a full moon.

  189. So that's really the only light that they have.

  190. These are also men likely who have not showered maybe in a little while.

  191. They are all bearded men.

  192. They're all from the same region.

  193. It would be easy for somebody not familiar with Jesus

  194. to not really be able to pick Jesus out in a lineup of these men at this particular time, right?

  195. So it makes sense.

  196. They need a signal so that when they get there, they know exactly who to apprehend

  197. because the last thing they want to do is bring the wrong guy back to Caiaphas' house.

  198. Because by the time they get to Caiaphas' house with the wrong guy,

  199. the guy they were supposed to get is going to be long gone

  200. and they're going to miss their opportunity to kill him.

  201. So we understand why there needs to be a signal.

  202. But why didn't they just arrest Jesus during the day?

  203. That's the question.

  204. Why come at night when they couldn't be sure exactly who he was?

  205. Why not take him during the day when they could identify him clearly?

  206. Why was it necessary for them to recruit a betrayer among the Lord's disciples?

  207. Three reasons I want to give you.

  208. First is the reason of the Sanhedrin.

  209. The Sanhedrin's reason was secrecy.

  210. Secrecy.

  211. Now step back and think of the larger picture here.

  212. Thousands of people have gathered in Jerusalem,

  213. many of whom have been impacted at some point in the last three years

  214. by the ministry of Jesus.

  215. Now think about this.

  216. All of these people in Judea and Galilee that Jesus has healed of leprosy

  217. or has raised their children from the dead

  218. or has instructed them or helped them in some way

  219. are probably in Jerusalem or nearby.

  220. They're not against Jesus.

  221. Why would they be?

  222. Jesus has changed their life.

  223. The Sanhedrin is concerned that if they were to make a public show

  224. of this particular arrest and custody,

  225. what would happen would be a riot among the people,

  226. an uproar that would be politically devastating.

  227. So they wanted to act swiftly.

  228. They wanted to act secretly because they feared a riot.

  229. And a betrayer provided them with the perfect opportunity

  230. to accomplish their task.

  231. Judas knew Jesus' movements.

  232. Judas knew Jesus' patterns.

  233. He would know that he's going to be in Gethsemane.

  234. He would know exactly who he is and how to identify him

  235. and what they should do to restrain him.

  236. And just look back at verse number one of chapter 14 and remember this.

  237. It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread

  238. and the chief priest and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth

  239. and kill him.

  240. For they said, not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people.

  241. So why a betrayer?

  242. Why betrayal?

  243. Well, the Sanhedrin needed it because of secrecy.

  244. But what is Judas' reason in this?

  245. Why is Judas concerned with betraying the Lord?

  246. Well, Judas' reason, I think, is selfish greed.

  247. Selfish greed.

  248. John chapter 6 tells us that Judas had an issue with greed.

    John 6 chapter mention

  249. He was the group's treasurer.

  250. Later, the disciples figure out that he had been stealing from them all along.

  251. Clearly, Judas only followed Jesus in hopes of receiving from him

  252. some benefit of wealth and power in the coming kingdom.

  253. And we've talked about this before.

  254. I don't think it's that Judas didn't truly believe Jesus was the Messiah.

  255. He just refused to accept what the Messiah's true purpose and identity really was.

  256. He thought what's coming along with Jesus is this new kingdom,

  257. which meant those who are closest to him are going to give wealth and power to rule the kingdom.

  258. And now he's starting to realize this is not who Jesus is.

  259. This is not what he's going to do.

  260. And so though he may think he is a messianic figure,

  261. his faith is not in Jesus' true identity and purpose.

  262. He's not a true disciple in that sense.

  263. So what does he do?

  264. When it became clear that Jesus' plan and purpose didn't meet his expectations,

  265. Judas betrayed the Lord for what he really wanted, money.

  266. Look back again in Mark 14 to verse 10.

  267. Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the 12,

  268. went to the chief priest in order to betray him to them.

  269. And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money.

  270. And he sought an opportunity to betray him.

  271. We find out in other passages, this was 30 pieces of silver.

  272. This was the price of a slave that he betrayed the Lord for.

  273. So that's the Sanhedrin's reason.

  274. That's Judas's reason.

  275. What's the ultimate reason though?

  276. The ultimate, perhaps we would say the divine reason for this betrayal

  277. is the fulfillment of scripture.

  278. Judas and the leaders of the Jews,

  279. they all had their reasons for doing what they did.

  280. But it was accomplished ultimately by the guiding hand of the sovereign God.

  281. Jesus himself affirmed that his betrayal was following God's plan and God's word.

  282. Look back at verse 20, Mark 14.

  283. He said to them,

  284. It is one of the 12, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me,

  285. for the Son of Man goes as what?

  286. Read that next part.

  287. As it is written of him.

  288. Jesus has already told the disciples,

  289. The betrayal is coming.

  290. It's going to be one of you.

  291. And the reason it's happening is because the scripture said it would happen.

  292. Do you see?

  293. God is working out his plan.

  294. Even through sinful people,

  295. God is working out his plan.

  296. Now let's take a time out for a second

  297. and think about our Lakeside Connect studies.

  298. Just last week, our group will do it tonight.

  299. So I guess you'll have some answers, I guess, as a part of the discussion here.

  300. Think about what was happening with Abraham and Isaac.

  301. Think about particularly that whole situation.

  302. I can't remember, Mark, what chapter we were texting about last week.

  303. The situation with Abimelech and all of that.

  304. And then fast forward and frame your mind

  305. along with what Paul was getting at in Romans chapter 8 there at the end.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  306. We have this groaning.

  307. The temptation in that groaning is to think that either by our sin or by our suffering,

  308. maybe God isn't fulfilling his promise

  309. or maybe God won't fulfill his promise.

  310. And then Paul reminds us, no, God is fulfilling his promise.

  311. Who can separate us from the love of God?

  312. And he gives that whole list of things.

  313. Well, none of that can separate us from the love of God.

  314. Judas can't prevent God's work.

  315. The leaders can't prevent God's work.

  316. In fact, God is going to use them and their betrayal and their sin to accomplish his work.

  317. God is working out his plan.

  318. It's amazing to think about.

  319. Now, remember, the Bible is a book about Jesus.

  320. And we could go to a few different Old Testament passages

  321. that would point toward this betrayal.

  322. If you would think maybe typically,

  323. maybe you would go to the story of Joseph,

  324. who Stephen said in his speech in Acts chapter 7 was a type of the Lord Jesus.

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  325. And so maybe when you see the betrayal that Joseph experienced from his brothers,

  326. maybe you start to see a picture of what is to come,

  327. maybe being identified in Christ.

  328. Certainly, we see that in David.

  329. And two different times, David is betrayed by someone closest to him.

  330. One of those times was his very own son, Absalom.

  331. Jesus actually quotes a psalm, though.

  332. Psalm 41 is the one he quotes.

  333. It says,

  334. Even my close friend in whom I trusted,

  335. who ate my bread,

  336. has lifted his heel against me.

  337. John says Jesus quoted that verse at the Last Supper

  338. in order to tell his disciples this betrayal is the plan of God

  339. and it's the fulfillment of the Word of God.

  340. Now, here's why I emphasize that.

  341. Had Jesus not been betrayed,

  342. he wouldn't be the true Messiah.

  343. But the fact of his betrayal,

  344. as tragic as it is,

  345. is another confirmation that he is actually indeed the Savior.

  346. Because the Savior had to be betrayed,

  347. according to Jesus' own words.

  348. So those are the reasons for betrayal.

  349. Let's look at the sting of betrayal now.

  350. The sting.

  351. Think about Judas' treachery here.

  352. It's made even more despicable by his choice in identifying the Lord.

  353. Now remember, let's just read it again just quickly.

  354. Look back with me at verse 44.

  355. Now the betrayer had given them a sign saying,

  356. The one I will kiss is the man.

  357. Seize him and lead him away under guard.

  358. So remember, Judas is the architect behind this plan.

  359. He's the one who chose the signal.

  360. He's the one who carried out the plan.

  361. Now he could have simply got to the garden,

  362. got close enough to Jesus to point at him and say,

  363. Here he is, guys.

  364. This is Jesus of Nazareth.

  365. John tells us Jesus even steps up to the men and says,

  366. Who are you looking for?

  367. And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

  368. And he says, I am he.

  369. He's identifying himself even in this moment.

  370. Judas could have easily said, That's him.

  371. Get him.

  372. But he doesn't do that.

  373. In his own mind, in his own plan,

  374. he chooses instead to identify the Lord with this kiss.

  375. I think an initial mockery that is beginning the process of this passion experience of Jesus.

  376. The words rabbi and kissed here are emphatic in the Greek,

  377. meaning that when Judas comes to Jesus,

  378. he embraces him in a way that expresses deep love and affection.

  379. It's the sting of betrayal.

  380. It's the kiss of betrayal.

  381. It's the kiss of death.

  382. But why?

  383. Why would he do that?

  384. I can't say what for sure was in Judas' mind.

  385. It's clear what was the condition of his heart, though.

  386. It's one thing to be the agent of betrayal.

  387. It's a whole new expression of depravity for the sign of one's betrayal

  388. to be a symbol of love and of affection.

  389. This is the kind of emotional and relational pain that Jesus endures for us.

  390. He endures on our behalf.

  391. This is the extent that he was willing to go.

  392. Philippians 2,

  393. He who sat on the throne of heaven descends to become the lowest of man.

  394. We sing the songs at Christmas,

  395. the song I remember us singing last year so often during December,

  396. Thou who was rich beyond all splendor,

  397. all for love's sake,

  398. became as poor,

  399. was condemned.

  400. The God who created Judas is now mocked by him,

  401. is now condemned by him.

  402. I want you to compare the treachery of Judas here

  403. with the steadfast love of the Lord.

  404. Is there not a contrast taking place here in Mark's purpose?

  405. Notice how Jesus does and does not respond to Judas.

  406. He doesn't berate him.

  407. He doesn't spew hateful words.

  408. He doesn't let him know,

  409. I knew it all from the beginning it was going to be you.

  410. No, there's nothing like that that happens.

  411. Matthew actually says,

  412. Jesus said to him,

  413. Friend,

  414. do what you came to do.

  415. Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him.

  416. Matthew,

  417. who was present in the moment,

  418. who witnessed this unfold,

  419. said he called him friend.

  420. That's an interesting choice of words here, isn't it?

  421. Because Judas certainly wasn't Jesus' friend.

  422. He was his betrayer.

  423. But he wasn't speaking from the perspective of Judas.

  424. It doesn't mean that Jesus was ignorant of

  425. or indifferent to what Judas did.

  426. I think it does reveal the steadfastness of his love

  427. for those who sin against him,

  428. which is all of us, by the way.

  429. He didn't merely teach us to love our enemies.

  430. He lived it.

  431. And he commands that we follow him

  432. as we face treacherous acts of betrayal ourselves.

  433. When people do us wrong,

  434. how is it that we respond to them?

  435. I think Jesus gives us a pretty amazing pattern here

  436. on what it actually means to love your enemies

  437. and to pray for them,

  438. to persecute you,

  439. and to show kindness to them.

  440. Well, that's Jesus' betrayal.

  441. Let's secondly look at Jesus' arrest.

  442. Jesus arrested.

  443. Verse 46,

  444. And they laid hands on him and seized him.

  445. So just as Jesus predicted his betrayal,

  446. so he foretold his arrest.

  447. Now Mark has told us this three different times already.

  448. In fact, let's just trace it back.

  449. Flip a couple of pages back to Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  450. Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  451. And look with me at verse 31.

  452. And he began to teach them

  453. that the Son of Man must suffer many things

  454. and be rejected by the elders

  455. and the chief priests and the scribes

  456. and be killed

  457. and after three days rise again.

  458. And he said this plainly.

  459. All right, prediction number one.

  460. Now look at chapter 9.

  461. Look at chapter 9 and verse 30.

  462. Let's start at verse 30.

  463. They went on from there and passed through Galilee

  464. and he did not want anyone to know

  465. for he was teaching his disciples,

  466. saying to them,

  467. The Son of Man is going to be delivered

  468. into the hands of men

  469. and they will kill him.

  470. And when he is killed,

  471. after three days,

  472. he will rise.

  473. That's prediction number two.

  474. Go to chapter 10 now.

  475. Chapter 10.

  476. Let's look at verse 32.

  477. And they were on the road going up to Jerusalem

  478. and Jesus was walking ahead of them

  479. and they were amazed

  480. and those who followed were afraid

  481. and taking the 12 again,

  482. he began to tell them what was to happen.

  483. See, we are going up to Jerusalem

  484. and the Son of Man will be delivered

  485. over to the chief priests and the scribes

  486. and they will condemn him to death

  487. and deliver him over to the Gentiles

  488. and they will mock him

  489. and spit on him

  490. and flog him

  491. and kill him

  492. and after three days,

  493. he will rise.

  494. Verse 46 here,

  495. back to chapter 14,

  496. is the precise fulfillment

  497. of what Jesus had repeatedly prophesied.

  498. The precise fulfillment.

  499. I want you to think about this.

  500. He knew exactly what was going to happen

  501. when he got to Jerusalem

  502. and he went there anyway.

  503. Nothing about this moment

  504. is outside of Jesus' control.

  505. It's not outside of his power to influence.

  506. He willingly obeyed the Father's plan

  507. by laying down his life for us

  508. and verse 46,

  509. simple as it may be,

  510. straightforward as it may be,

  511. is a monumental verse

  512. to just tell us what Jesus said is true.

  513. It happened

  514. and it happened

  515. because he was willing for it to happen.

  516. Now another gospel

  517. we're going to see here in just a second,

  518. one of the disciples gets carried away.

  519. Another gospel tells us

  520. that when Jesus responds in that moment,

  521. he says,

  522. do you not realize

  523. that I can call

  524. 12 legions of angels

  525. from my Father?

  526. That's a thousand angels

  527. at least

  528. for Jesus

  529. plus all of the remaining disciples.

  530. If we were really in trouble, men,

  531. if this was really a problem, men,

  532. I could appeal to the Father

  533. and we'd have all the help that we need.

  534. But this is the plan.

  535. This is what I've told you.

  536. It was all a part of God's plan.

  537. Jesus knew

  538. and he pursued it willingly.

  539. Why?

  540. Love, right?

  541. Love,

  542. all for love's sake,

  543. he did these things.

  544. Verse 47,

  545. one of those who stood by

  546. drew his sword

  547. and struck the servant

  548. of the high priest,

  549. cut off his ear.

  550. So one of the disciples

  551. was far less willing

  552. than Jesus was.

  553. John 18 tells us

  554. it was Peter.

  555. Which isn't so much

  556. of a surprise to us,

  557. is it?

  558. It's not unusual

  559. for us to find Peter

  560. acting or speaking

  561. without first thinking.

  562. Now how many of you

  563. can identify with Peter

  564. in that?

  565. I think I've told you

  566. my mom had this habit

  567. when I was growing up.

  568. She would tell me

  569. that my mouth was in drive

  570. and my brain was in neutral

  571. is what she would say.

  572. In other words,

  573. I would act or say

  574. before I would actually

  575. use the brain

  576. that God had given me.

  577. Peter functions that way

  578. quite a bit,

  579. doesn't he?

  580. He's often rash,

  581. passionate,

  582. to his credit,

  583. passionate,

  584. but a bit rash.

  585. And it always bites him,

  586. doesn't it?

  587. The heat of the moment,

  588. he kind of thoughtlessly

  589. grabs a sword

  590. and he takes a swing

  591. at one of the high priests.

  592. One of the gospels

  593. tells us the high priest

  594. priest's servant.

  595. His name was Malchus.

  596. Now Luke wrote

  597. that after correcting Peter,

  598. Jesus touched Malchus' head

  599. and fully restored

  600. his injured ear.

  601. That's pretty amazing too.

  602. In the midst of all of this,

  603. Jesus still displays

  604. his love and compassion

  605. and his power

  606. in order to heal this man.

  607. Which just as another,

  608. by the way,

  609. I would really encourage you

  610. to lay the four gospel accounts

  611. beside each other.

  612. Each of them is a bit different

  613. and helps really fill in

  614. this particular story.

  615. I would encourage you

  616. to do that.

  617. Mark omits a lot

  618. of the details

  619. that the other gospel authors

  620. includes.

  621. But his aim

  622. was not to fill us in

  623. on every detail

  624. of the story.

  625. That's not Mark's aim here.

  626. Remember the dual focus

  627. that I told you Mark has

  628. in his book overall,

  629. but especially

  630. in this section.

  631. There's the dual focus

  632. of Jesus' Messiahship

  633. and faithfulness

  634. compared with the,

  635. or contrasted with,

  636. the dynamic

  637. of faithful discipleship.

  638. Where all of the disciples

  639. failed,

  640. Jesus was faithful.

  641. Jesus persevered

  642. in all of those things.

  643. We see that happening

  644. here again.

  645. There's a contrast here

  646. for Mark's purpose.

  647. It doesn't matter who it is.

  648. What matters

  649. is what they did.

  650. So let's consider

  651. Peter's sin

  652. for just a moment.

  653. Let's give him

  654. a little bit of credit.

  655. Peter's motive

  656. was born out of his love

  657. and his loyalty for Jesus.

  658. Let's get that part right.

  659. It would also be wrong

  660. for us to say

  661. that Peter shouldn't

  662. have been bothered

  663. by what was happening.

  664. That he should have just

  665. accepted

  666. because Jesus had said

  667. he would be betrayed

  668. and arrested.

  669. That he should just accept

  670. it without any kind

  671. of emotional experience

  672. at all.

  673. That wouldn't be right

  674. for us to say either.

  675. The problem here

  676. is that his untempered anger

  677. produced a murderous act.

  678. I think it's safe

  679. for us to say

  680. Peter wasn't aiming

  681. for Malchus' ear.

  682. One preacher said

  683. either he was really good

  684. to be able to cut off

  685. only Malchus' ear

  686. or he's really bad

  687. to miss the rest

  688. of his head

  689. because that's what

  690. Peter's aiming for here.

  691. He's trying to kill this man.

  692. This is not the man

  693. arresting Jesus.

  694. This is the servant

  695. probably with the warrant.

  696. And Peter in a moment

  697. of brashness

  698. takes out his sword

  699. and commits

  700. a murderous act.

  701. This was attempted murder.

  702. And Jesus reminds Peter

  703. as such

  704. when he says

  705. in Matthew 26

  706. that all who take

  707. the sword

  708. will perish

  709. by the sword.

  710. In other words

  711. this is not

  712. the right action Peter.

  713. This is murderous

  714. which makes

  715. means that

  716. it would be

  717. perfectly legitimate

  718. for justice

  719. to be carried out

  720. on you.

  721. You would deserve

  722. to be put to death

  723. for what you just did.

  724. That's what he's saying

  725. to Peter.

  726. Peter was right

  727. to be angry

  728. but still he acted

  729. in the flesh

  730. instead of following

  731. Jesus' teaching

  732. and example.

  733. When did Jesus

  734. ever call his disciples

  735. to arms?

  736. Never.

  737. Never.

  738. In fact

  739. he regularly preached

  740. against this type

  741. of retribution

  742. and vengeance.

  743. Kent Hughes notes

  744. how easy it is

  745. to be out of step

  746. with Christ

  747. when we think

  748. we are serving him

  749. even defending him.

  750. Think about that again.

  751. How easy it is for us

  752. to actually

  753. in a moment

  754. where in our motive

  755. and in our thought

  756. we are serving Christ

  757. and we are defending Christ

  758. but we're actually doing it

  759. in quite a sinful way.

  760. It's a reminder to us

  761. isn't it?

  762. That our motives

  763. and our position

  764. can be right

  765. and yet our actions

  766. still be sinful.

  767. We need to take

  768. the right stand

  769. but we have to avoid

  770. this hateful

  771. spiteful

  772. self-righteous spirit

  773. that's wrapped

  774. often

  775. in compassionless

  776. argumentation

  777. with those

  778. who disagree with us

  779. or do not follow Christ.

  780. There's a difference

  781. between standing for Christ

  782. and being a jerk

  783. and here

  784. Peter's being a jerk.

  785. His aim

  786. was to destroy

  787. his enemy

  788. and we're often

  789. guilty of having

  790. the same goal

  791. and we start

  792. to consider

  793. the culture

  794. around us

  795. there's lots of things

  796. we need to stand for

  797. in biblical truth.

  798. We talk about

  799. the abortion debates

  800. that are getting

  801. very heated

  802. at this point.

  803. We think about

  804. the sexual revolution

  805. that's taking place

  806. and is only going to

  807. continue to get worse

  808. and we can even

  809. get really specific

  810. with the things

  811. going on with Disney

  812. and some of the things

  813. that they're doing

  814. and what do we do

  815. and it would be

  816. very easy for us

  817. in the process

  818. of standing for truth

  819. and defending Christ

  820. to actually do that

  821. in a way

  822. that's actually

  823. quite sinful.

  824. But Jesus shows us

  825. a way of righteousness

  826. and that's what I want

  827. to point out here.

  828. Verse 48

  829. Jesus said to them

  830. have you come out

  831. against a robber

  832. with swords

  833. and clubs

  834. to capture me?

  835. Day after day

  836. I was with you

  837. in the temple teaching

  838. and you did not seize me

  839. but let the scriptures

  840. be fulfilled.

  841. Do you see the difference

  842. in Peter

  843. and Jesus' responses?

  844. Peter aims

  845. to destroy the enemy

  846. Jesus appeals

  847. to their conscience

  848. instead.

  849. He doesn't seek

  850. to destroy them

  851. he seeks

  852. to win them

  853. if not in that moment

  854. perhaps later

  855. when they would look back

  856. on this particular

  857. experience that they had.

  858. He pointed out

  859. that their method

  860. of arresting him

  861. exposed the lack

  862. of justification

  863. for the very arrest.

  864. He essentially says

  865. if I'm guilty

  866. of a crime

  867. that warrants

  868. a crowd of armed soldiers

  869. why did you come

  870. in the secrecy

  871. of the night?

  872. Why didn't you

  873. just take me

  874. during the day?

  875. Do you see what he's doing?

  876. He's not fighting

  877. against them

  878. he's exposing

  879. their error.

  880. He's appealing

  881. to their conscience

  882. I didn't hide

  883. from anyone

  884. Jesus says

  885. he could have

  886. easily gotten me

  887. in the temple

  888. day after day

  889. why are you

  890. doing it like this?

  891. He wanted them

  892. to look back

  893. on that moment

  894. and see it

  895. as a fulfillment

  896. of scripture.

  897. Sinclair Ferguson

  898. I think was

  899. was helpful

  900. in pointing this

  901. dynamic out to me

  902. he said

  903. inherent

  904. in Jesus' words

  905. is a moral appeal

  906. he wanted

  907. to speak

  908. to their

  909. consciences

  910. in a way

  911. that might be

  912. used later

  913. to convict them

  914. of their own sin

  915. and of his own

  916. righteousness

  917. wasn't that always

  918. Jesus' aim?

  919. He didn't seek

  920. to destroy people

  921. he sought

  922. to win them

  923. quite a difference

  924. from Peter

  925. whereas Peter's

  926. hatefulness

  927. is aimed

  928. to destroy men

  929. Jesus' love

  930. and compassion

  931. sought

  932. to convince

  933. them of the truth

  934. and in that

  935. we find the right way

  936. to stand boldly

  937. for Christ

  938. and for the truth

  939. in a way

  940. that in our

  941. heart of hearts

  942. seeks to actually

  943. win a person

  944. to the truth

  945. not merely

  946. destroy them

  947. or viscerate them

  948. with our words.

  949. So we see

  950. Jesus betrayed

  951. we see Jesus

  952. arrested

  953. finally and quickly

  954. we see Jesus

  955. forsaken

  956. Jesus forsaken

  957. look at verse 50

  958. and they all

  959. left him

  960. and fled

  961. and a young man

  962. followed him

  963. with nothing

  964. but a linen cloth

  965. about his body

  966. and they seized him

  967. but he left

  968. the linen cloth

  969. and ran away

  970. naked

  971. interesting

  972. so again

  973. Jesus told the disciples

  974. this would happen

  975. right?

  976. Look back at verse 27

  977. of Mark 14

  978. Jesus said to them

  979. you will all

  980. fall away

  981. for it is written

  982. I will strike

  983. the shepherd

  984. and the sheep

  985. will be scattered

  986. that's a quotation

  987. by Jesus

  988. from the prophet

  989. Zechariah

  990. Jesus says

  991. all of you

  992. are going to

  993. fall away

  994. because the Bible

  995. says all of you

  996. will fall away

  997. and then he gives

  998. them that wonderful

  999. promise

  1000. right?

  1001. So Jesus said

  1002. this would happen

  1003. and what do we

  1004. find in this passage?

  1005. Well we find

  1006. what Jesus said

  1007. actually

  1008. indeed happening

1009. just as he said it

  1010. now Mark

  1011. is the only gospel

  1012. author to include

  1013. this note

  1014. about the young man

  1015. and many scholars

  1016. believe that this

  1017. is Mark himself

  1018. and it's very easy

  1019. to build a convincing

  1020. argument about that

  1021. in fact

1022. if you want to know

  1023. what that argument is

  1024. I'll talk to you

  1025. after the service

1026. but it's not the point

  1027. of why it's here

  1028. we don't know

1029. for sure who it is

  1030. we don't know

  1031. why they're there

  1032. there is an

  1033. intentional ambiguity

  1034. in Mark's

  1035. on Mark's part

  1036. that tells us

  1037. that it was

  1038. his intention

  1039. not for us

  1040. to get distracted

  1041. by the unusual

  1042. nature of this

  1043. story

  1044. the fact that

  1045. he doesn't name

  1046. the person

  1047. and he gives us

  1048. no other filler

  1049. information

  1050. tells us that

  1051. none of those

  1052. things matter

  1053. to Mark

  1054. what Mark

  1055. is trying to

  1056. emphasize

  1057. is the event

  1058. itself

  1059. what actually

  1060. happened

  1061. with this

  1062. young man

  1063. he writes

  1064. it

  1065. merely because

  1066. it happened

  1067. and what Mark

  1068. is emphasizing

  1069. here is the

  1070. fact that

  1071. all of the

  1072. followers of

  1073. Jesus

  1074. fell away

  1075. even

  1076. the brave

  1077. young man

  1078. who outstayed

  1079. all the other

  1080. disciples

  1081. all the disciples

  1082. fled

  1083. and then there's

  1084. this young man

  1085. who seems to be

  1086. tagging along

  1087. and he follows

  1088. closely along

  1089. with Jesus

  1090. until the soldiers

  1091. recognize him

  1092. let's just say

  1093. for just a second

  1094. whoever this man

  1095. is whether it's

  1096. Mark or someone

  1097. else

  1098. this young fellow

  1099. has got a lot

  1100. of courage

  1101. because all the

  1102. disciples ran

  1103. and he follows

  1104. along anyways

  1105. and it's only

  1106. at the moment

  1107. only at the moment

  1108. that the soldiers

  1109. recognize him

  1110. and his very life

  1111. is then threatened

  1112. that he begins

  1113. to run

  1114. which is exactly

  1115. why all the

  1116. disciples ran too

  1117. so even the most

  1118. courageous

  1119. of the people

  1120. present in that

  1121. moment

  1122. still forsook

  1123. Jesus

  1124. that's Mark's

  1125. point

  1126. that in this

  1127. moment

  1128. Jesus was

  1129. utterly

  1130. forsaken

  1131. he faced

  1132. what was

  1133. ahead of him

  1134. totally

  1135. abandoned

  1136. by every

  1137. friend

  1138. by every

  1139. follower

  1140. and ultimately

  1141. by the

  1142. father

  1143. himself

  1144. and in

  1145. fulfillment

  1146. of the

  1147. scripture

  1148. he was

  1149. totally

  1150. alone

  1151. to bear

  1152. our sin

  1153. and to

  1154. endure

  1155. the wrath

  1156. of God

  1157. again

  1158. Ferguson

  1159. is helpful

  1160. Jesus

  1161. was being

  1162. left

  1163. entirely

  1164. alone

  1165. in what

  1166. he was

  1167. about to

  1168. do

  1169. no one

  1170. would stand

  1171. with him

  1172. no one

  1173. could

  1174. he would

  1175. stand alone

  1176. as savior

  1177. because he

  1178. alone

  1179. was fit

  1180. to bear

  1181. the judgment

  1182. of God

  1183. in our

  1184. place

  1185. like a

  1186. lamb

  1187. led away

  1188. to the

  1189. slaughter

  1190. Isaiah

  1191. writes

  1192. so Jesus

  1193. is led

  1194. away

  1195. in this

  1196. moment

  1197. utterly

  1198. alone

  1199. to drink

  1200. the cup

  1201. and face

  1202. the hour

  1203. that the

  1204. father

  1205. had set

  1206. aside

  1207. for him

  1208. to drink

  1209. and to

  1210. face

  1211. and why

  1212. does he

  1213. do that

  1214. he does

  1215. that in

  1216. order that

  1217. he might

  1218. take our

  1219. place

  1220. and provide

  1221. forgiveness

  1222. and freedom

  1223. and life

  1224. I said at the

  1225. beginning

  1226. this this

  1227. passage is

  1228. simple and

  1229. straightforward

  1230. it really

  1231. is

  1232. and while

  1233. there's

  1234. lessons for

  1235. us to

  1236. learn through

  1237. the text

  1238. the main

  1239. purpose

  1240. here is

  1241. to reveal

  1242. that Jesus

  1243. is the

  1244. perfect

  1245. fulfillment

  1246. of the

  1247. scriptures

  1248. teaching

  1249. about the

  1250. Messiah

  1251. remember

  1252. Mark

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  1253. chapter 1

  1254. in verse

  1255. 1

  1256. Mark

  1257. tells us

  1258. his goal

  1259. the beginning

  1260. of the

  1261. gospel of

  1262. Jesus

  1263. Christ

  1264. Messiah

  1265. Son of

  1266. God

  1267. what's he

  1268. doing

  1269. he's

  1270. presenting

  1271. the fact

  1272. declaring

  1273. the fact

  1274. proclaiming

  1275. good news

  1276. Jesus

  1277. of Nazareth

  1278. he is

  1279. the one

  1280. and when

  1281. we get

  1282. to this

  1283. passage

  1284. and we

  1285. see the

  1286. fulfillment

  1287. of Jesus

  1288. the fulfillment

  1289. of scripture

  1290. in Jesus

  1291. we see

  1292. yes indeed

  1293. Jesus is

  1294. the one

  1295. yes indeed

  1296. he is

  1297. the one

  1298. we must

  1299. trust

  1300. that we

  1301. must follow

  1302. that we

  1303. must believe

  1304. he is

  1305. the only

  1306. way

  1307. that's

  1308. the point

  1309. it's

  1310. significant

  1311. simple

  1312. praise the

  1313. Lord

  1314. but significant

  1315. and there's

  1316. real

  1317. eternal

  1318. implications

  1319. to this

  1320. truth

  1321. for every

  1322. one of

  1323. us

  1324. step back

  1325. for just

  1326. a moment

  1327. and consider

  1328. the bigger

  1329. picture of

  1330. this arrest

  1331. even knowing

  1332. your own

  1333. innocence

  1334. there would

  1335. be

  1336. incredible

  1337. shame

  1338. and embarrassment

  1339. that would

  1340. come with

  1341. being publicly

  1342. carried away

  1343. in handcuffs

  1344. and put

  1345. into a

  1346. police car

  1347. to be

  1348. driven

  1349. to the

  1350. city jail

  1351. in front

  1352. of your

  1353. wife

  1354. and your

  1355. children

  1356. and your

  1357. neighbors

  1358. and your

  1359. friends

  1360. or your

  1361. church

  1362. can you

  1363. imagine

  1364. even if

  1365. you knew

  1366. your innocence

  1367. there's

  1368. shame in

  1369. that

  1370. there's

  1371. embarrassment

  1372. in that

  1373. Jesus

  1374. was totally

  1375. innocent

  1376. having never

  1377. even sinned

  1378. one time

  1379. yet he was

  1380. counted as a

  1381. dangerous

  1382. criminal

  1383. he was

  1384. put on

  1385. display

  1386. even in

  1387. the night

  1388. in front

  1389. of his

  1390. disciples

  1391. as if

  1392. he was

  1393. the

  1394. transgressor

  1395. in his

  1396. arrest

  1397. he is

  1398. numbered

  1399. with the

  1400. transgressors

  1401. Jesus

  1402. bearing

  1403. the shame

  1404. that belongs

  1405. to us

  1406. and this

  1407. was just

  1408. the beginning

  1409. Isaiah 53

  1410. 12

  1411. he poured

  1412. out his

  1413. soul

  1414. to death

  1415. and was

  1416. numbered

  1417. with the

  1418. transgressors

  1419. yet he

  1420. bore the

  1421. sin

  1422. of many

  1423. and makes

  1424. intercession

  1425. for the

  1426. transgressors

  1427. do you see

  1428. what Isaiah

  1429. was saying

  1430. this righteous

  1431. one

  1432. the servant

  1433. of God

  1434. sinless

  1435. perfect

  1436. would be

  1437. counted as a

  1438. transgressor

  1439. and in being

  1440. counted as a

  1441. transgressor

  1442. he would

  1443. bear the

  1444. sin of

  1445. many people

  1446. true

  1447. transgressors

  1448. why

  1449. what did

  1450. he say

  1451. so that

  1452. he could

  1453. make

  1454. intercession

  1455. for the

  1456. transgressors

  1457. is that not

  1458. the role

  1459. that Jesus

  1460. now plays

  1461. for us

  1462. the new

  1463. testament

  1464. refers to

  1465. him as

  1466. making

  1467. intercession

  1468. that he

  1469. pleads

  1470. along with

  1471. the father

  1472. when we

  1473. stand

  1474. condemned

  1475. in our

  1476. sin

  1477. dead

  1478. in our

  1479. sin

  1480. Jesus

  1481. the righteous

  1482. one

  1483. upon our

  1484. faith

  1485. intercedes

  1486. for us

  1487. on our

  1488. behalf

  1489. to the

  1490. father

  1491. and in

  1492. that moment

  1493. reconciles

  1494. two enemies

  1495. the holy

  1496. God

  1497. and the

  1498. sinful

  1499. man

  1500. and what

  1501. makes it

  1502. possible for

  1503. Jesus to

  1504. do that

  1505. he was

  1506. counted as

  1507. a

  1508. transgressor

  1509. and he

  1510. bore the

  1511. sin of

  1512. many

  1513. that's the

  1514. significance

  1515. this isn't a

  1516. story of

  1517. execution

  1518. this is a

  1519. story of

  1520. substitution

  1521. we are the

  1522. sinners who

  1523. deserve to be

  1524. forsaken

  1525. alienated from

  1526. God

  1527. but on the

  1528. cross

  1529. Jesus the

  1530. righteous one

  1531. was forsaken

  1532. in our

  1533. place

  1534. he was

  1535. numbered with

  1536. the transgressors

  1537. so that real

  1538. transgressors could

  1539. be declared

  1540. forgiven

  1541. and free

  1542. his death

  1543. pays the

  1544. price for

  1545. our sin

  1546. and he

  1547. offers forgiveness

  1548. and life

  1549. to all

  1550. who will turn

  1551. from their

  1552. sin and

  1553. believe in

  1554. his name

  1555. which leaves

  1556. one question

  1557. remaining

  1558. will you

  1559. believe

  1560. will you

  1561. follow him

  1562. will you

  1563. trust him

  1564. and believe

  1565. him for what

  1566. he is or

  1567. will you be

  1568. a Judas

  1569. who comes to

  1570. him only

  1571. seeking certain

  1572. gain but

  1573. will ultimately

  1574. fall away when

  1575. he doesn't meet

  1576. your expectation

  1577. no

  1578. see who he

  1579. is

  1580. see what he

  1581. accomplished

  1582. and believe

  1583. and he

  1584. says all

  1585. who will

  1586. believe

  1587. he will

  1588. receive

  1589. and will

  1590. give this

  1591. life

  1592. so receive

  1593. him

  1594. and then

  1595. share

  1596. him

  1597. what better

  1598. news could

  1599. we bring to

  1600. our family

  1601. what better

  1602. news could you

  1603. take to your

  1604. neighbor

  1605. as much as I

  1606. would love to

  1607. brag to Shane

  1608. about the way

  1609. the Yankees have

  1610. been beating up on

  1611. the Red Sox this

  1612. weekend

  1613. what better

  1614. news would there

  1615. be other than

  1616. to say Shane

  1617. Jesus has died

  1618. for your sin

  1619. if you will

  1620. just believe
