  1. We're parachuting in, so to speak, to the middle of Mark's description of Jesus' crucifixion.

  2. As we saw last week in verses 16 to 32, Mark really aimed to express what Jesus endured

  3. in the process of crucifixion itself, namely mockery, brutality, blasphemy.

  4. And we walked through that text last week.

  5. But there's a noticeable shift in the text that we just read.

  6. When we get to verse 33, Mark is still describing the crucifixion, but he has moved away from

  7. a focus on the cross to a focus on the death of Christ itself.

  8. To say it another way, Mark is moving in the earlier section, telling us of the physical

  9. suffering that Jesus endured, to now he is focused on, in this present passage, communicating

  10. the atoning work that Jesus accomplished.

  11. Do you see the difference?

  12. In one sense last week, we focused on this is the physical nature, for the most part, the

  13. physical nature of what Jesus endured.

  14. And now Mark moves on immediately to the most important facet of all of that, which is why

  15. that physical suffering even matters.

  16. What was actually the purpose of it?

  17. It was a finished work of atonement that Jesus was providing for sinners.

  18. So our concern with Jesus' crucifixion then is not merely about the excruciating way that

  19. he died, but about the spiritual purpose that his death achieved, which we would say in one

  20. simple word, it achieved a substitution, a substitution for sinners.

  21. And this substitution is not something that has been looked back upon by Christians and contrived

  22. in an effort to try to piece things together as they've looked at it.

  23. This is actually the pattern of the Bible.

  24. The Old Testament prophesied this substitution.

  25. Jesus himself declared this substitution as we have studied all the way through Mark's gospel.

  26. It was symbolized most recently in our study in Barabbas, who was set free at Jesus' trial,

  27. and then as you work on through the New Testament, it is explained in explicit detail by the apostles.

  28. And of course, we're reminded of Isaiah 53, which we have referenced so often in these last few weeks.

  29. This passage corresponds very hopefully to verses 4 through 6.

  30. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows,

  31. yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

  32. But he was pierced for our transgressions.

  33. He was crushed for our iniquities.

  34. Upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

  35. That's the significance of this text.

  36. That's why we care about the cross.

  37. And that's what I'd like for us to explore this morning.

  38. Four things that I want to point out to you.

  39. The first two will take us a good bit of a time, and then we'll move somewhat quickly through the last two.

  40. So if you get to the point after about the second point, and you're just ready to be done with this,

  41. don't worry.

  42. We're close, okay?

  43. Number one, if you want to keep notes,

  44. I want you to see the judgment of God.

  45. The judgment of God.

  46. Look with me at verse 33.

  47. And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

  48. Now I want to go ahead and pause here,

  49. and I want to take just a moment to consider the nature and the purpose of this darkness

  50. that descended upon the region around Jerusalem.

  51. Mark tells us that this darkness enveloped the region at the sixth hour,

  52. which according to Jewish reckoning of time was midday.

  53. It was noon.

  54. And the darkness continued until Jesus' final breath at three in the afternoon.

  55. Now the significance of this is its timing.

  56. Darkness descended upon the land, not clouds.

  57. This isn't a storm that just kind of rolls into the area of Jerusalem.

  58. That's not what we're told in the text.

  59. We're told in the text this is actually a supernatural darkness

  60. that descends upon this particular region at this time.

  61. And the significance is it appears and it descends upon this region

  62. at the brightest part of the day.

  63. There's no natural way to explain it.

  64. The timing of Passover actually renders a full solar eclipse an impossibility

  65. because Passover took place at the new moon, not the full moon.

  66. So it couldn't be that there was, it's not astronomically possible

  67. that there would be a solar eclipse that we could point to and say,

  68. well, this was just kind of coincidental.

  69. That's not what's happening here.

  70. What was taking place at the moment of Jesus' crucifixion

  71. was an astronomical anomaly attributed only to

  72. the supernatural power of the creator God.

  73. Now that shouldn't come as surprising to us if we're students of the Bible

  74. because the kids just quoted just a few moments ago in Genesis 1.26

  75. that God created not only us, but he created everything that we see

  76. and that he rules over those things.

  77. And that part of the blessing of knowing him

  78. is that we can see his hand at work in the creation around us.

  79. So if he created all that there is and he created the things that we see in the world,

  80. including the sun and the moon and the stars,

  81. as the Bible affirms that he did,

  82. then it should come as no surprise to us then

  83. that he would actually have power over those things.

  84. That in his divine power,

  85. he could bring darkness at whatever moment he wanted to bring darkness.

  86. And it appears that that's exactly what is happening here in verse 33.

  87. But this darkness was not an expression of divine mourning.

  88. That's not the reason for it.

  89. It's not that God was so distraught by what man was doing to his son

  90. that almost in a sense, maybe we would imagine it this way,

  91. that there was an expression of his emotional volatility in this moment

  92. that ushered in this darkness,

  93. just so that everybody would know that Jesus was upset at what they were doing

  94. or that God was upset with what they were doing to Jesus.

  95. That's not what this darkness is about.

  96. It's not divine mourning.

  97. This darkness is a divine judgment.

  98. The Old Testament speaks of prophecies,

  99. particularly in Amos chapter 8.

    Amos 8 chapter mention

  100. It speaks of prophecies of midday darkness

  101. sent by God in reference to his divine judgment

  102. against sin and sinners.

  103. Many scholars see even in this darkness a parallel to the ninth plague in the book of Exodus,

  104. which was darkness that continued through the moment of Passover

  105. where there was a death that resulted in the freedom

  106. and the exodus of God's people out of bondage in Egypt.

  107. In either case, no matter which one you would want to attribute it to,

  108. or maybe it's to be attributed to both things in some dimension,

  109. in either case, there's no doubt that this darkness

  110. is a sign of the Father's judgment against sin.

  111. It's an expression of it.

  112. But the fact that we cannot overlook

  113. is that Jesus had no sin for which to be judged.

  114. So what is this darkness then about?

  115. It's not about God's judgment on us.

  116. It's about God's judgment on Christ, the sinless one,

  117. who on the cross absorbs the wrath of God in the place of sinners.

  118. And God expresses this in a visible sign through midday darkness.

  119. And then it's affirmed by Jesus' own statement.

  120. Look at verse 34.

  121. And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice,

  122. Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani,

  123. which means, my God, my God,

  124. why have you forsaken me?

  125. So the darkness then is a visible expression of the divine judgment

  126. that Jesus was in that moment genuinely experiencing.

  127. And perhaps for us to understand this best,

  128. we need to be reminded that the ultimate punishment for sin

  129. is spiritual death,

  130. which the New Testament affirms as alienation from God,

  131. separation from the creator.

  132. In becoming a man,

  133. Jesus experienced the fullness of humanity

  134. with one exception up to this point.

  135. The one exception is that his relationship with the father was not broken.

  136. But remember, it's sin that brings death and separation from God.

  137. But Jesus did not sin.

  138. At that moment, in the hours of his crucifixion,

  139. Jesus was truly experiencing what he had foreseen

  140. with profound horror in the garden of Gethsemane.

  141. Remember in our earlier study,

  142. Jesus cries out to God three different times.

  143. He goes back and he cries to the father,

  144. if it be possible,

  145. let this cup of divine wrath pass from me.

  146. And then of course he affirms in that moment,

  147. not my will, but your will.

  148. An amazing pattern for us to follow as we studied that.

  149. But what was his anguish over in the garden?

  150. It wasn't merely what he foresaw in his physical suffering.

  151. His anguish in the garden was about this moment.

  152. For the first time,

  153. experiencing true separation from the father

  154. in the sense of bearing our sin.

  155. And after hours of silent suffering,

  156. Jesus cried out, quoting verse one of Psalm 22,

  157. my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

  158. And it's amazing how instinctively

  159. Jesus expressed himself in biblical language.

  160. Something we see him do over and over and over.

  161. And then here again on the cross,

  162. the way that Jesus expresses himself

  163. is with his very words,

  164. the words of God,

  165. the words of the Old Testament.

  166. I think that might be just as a side note,

  167. a good lesson for us to make note of.

  168. In these moments,

  169. Jesus doesn't express himself in just human feelings.

  170. He expresses himself through the lens of the word of God.

  171. Maybe we would be helped to do that ourselves.

  172. But we don't need to be confused by his statement here.

  173. We shouldn't interpret Jesus's cry here

  174. as a question for which he had no answer.

  175. That's not really what Jesus is doing.

  176. He's not asking the father a question

  177. that he had no answer for.

  178. Jesus knew all along what would happen to him.

  179. He knew all along exactly why this was happening.

  180. And he was willingly enduring it for our sakes.

  181. So he wasn't asking a question.

  182. He was using scripture to give voice

  183. to what he was going through at that moment.

  184. And what he was going through at that moment

  185. in bearing our sin

  186. was the separation from the father

  187. as sin bearer.

  188. And praise God that he made this cry from the cross.

  189. Because had he not made this cry from the cross,

  190. we would have terrible difficulty

  191. grasping the true nature of his suffering in this moment.

  192. But his suffering wasn't just about his body's pain.

  193. His suffering ultimately was about being the bearer of our sin.

  194. You said God's holy nature demanded separation

  195. as the son became sin.

  196. Not even the most evil man, he goes on to write,

  197. including Nero and Hitler,

  198. has ever known in this life

  199. the horror of being completely cut off from God.

  200. But Christ knew it in this moment.

  201. Now I want to take a moment to let this marinate.

  202. And I know that can produce all kinds of other questions

  203. that we don't have time to get into today.

  204. And there's answers for those questions

  205. if you're thinking that we can get to later.

  206. But I want you to just let this marinate for a moment.

  207. On the cross,

  208. the sinless son of God

  209. endured what sinners are destined to suffer

  210. for all eternity.

  211. And I wonder how often we consider the death of Christ

  212. without clearly recognizing

  213. that it is our personal sin

  214. that made it necessary.

  215. I think we tend to view

  216. Jesus' sacrifice for sin in abstraction.

  217. That is that we see sin theoretically

  218. and we understand the dynamic

  219. that Jesus died for sin and for sinners,

  220. but we don't always personalize that

  221. in a way that the gospel demands.

  222. We think that sin is this thing

  223. that's kind of out there,

  224. just kind of this whole big thing

  225. that the whole earth is just kind of

  226. inadvertently plagued by

  227. and that when Jesus died on the cross,

  228. he was dying for like this kind of thing

  229. that's just out there.

  230. And we never really truly bring it

  231. into concrete terms.

  232. We think of it theoretically,

  233. we fail to acknowledge

  234. the words of that song that we just sang.

  235. It was my sin that held him there

  236. until it was accomplished.

  237. The reality is that it is yours and my deceits,

  238. yours and my immoralities,

  239. yours and my slanders,

  240. yours and my rebellions,

  241. yours and my thefts,

  242. yours and my abuses,

  243. yours and my envies,

  244. yours and my sin.

  245. It is our sin,

  246. my sin,

  247. Jared's sin

  248. that made the death of Jesus

  249. necessary for our salvation.

  250. And I'll never forget

  251. when Ashlyn first made

  252. a profession of faith and conversion.

  253. She's always been so good

  254. at memorizing things

  255. and she could explain the gospel

  256. better than some adults could

  257. before she had ever actually professed faith

  258. in the gospel.

  259. Which tells us something

  260. that's helpful

  261. about the nature of conversion.

  262. Just having an intellectual knowledge

  263. of the things of God

  264. is not sufficient for salvation.

  265. And she could tell you

  266. all of those things.

  267. And I remember one day

  268. we're working through all the stuff.

  269. She had been catechized thoroughly

  270. on the fact that Jesus died for sin.

  271. Jesus died for sinners.

  272. But I remember the first time

  273. that she finally realized

  274. that it wasn't just that Jesus died for sin,

  275. this kind of abstract notion

  276. of sinful existence,

  277. but that he died for her sin,

  278. for her lies.

  279. Maybe you know that Jesus died for sin,

  280. but you've just never really seen yourself

  281. as much of a sinner.

  282. And I want to tell you

  283. that Jesus did not die for sin conceptually.

  284. He died for it actually.

  285. And the only way possible for him to do that

  286. is if the sin for which he died

  287. was ours personally.

  288. Your sin,

  289. your rebellion,

  290. your lies,

  291. your fill in the blank,

  292. that's what held him to the tree.

  293. That's what made his death necessary.

  294. That's what he was absorbing in that moment.

  295. God's wrath against you,

  296. not people against you and me.

  297. And just to show you that

  298. I'm not just making this up.

  299. This is in the text itself.

  300. 1 Peter 2 in verse 24.

  301. Peter says he himself bore our sins

  302. in his body on the tree

  303. that we might die to sin

  304. and live to righteousness.

  305. By his wounds,

  306. we have been healed,

  307. Peter writes,

  308. quoting Isaiah 53.

  309. Paul says it to the Corinthians,

  310. 2 Corinthians 5, 21.

  311. For our sake,

  312. he made him to be sin

  313. who knew no sin

  314. so that in him

  315. we might become

  316. the righteousness of God.

  317. He says it again

  318. to the Galatians.

  319. Galatians chapter 3

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  320. and verse 13.

  321. Christ redeemed us

  322. from the curse of the law

  323. by becoming a curse

  324. for us.

  325. For it is written,

  326. quote,

  327. cursed is everyone

  328. who hangs on a tree.

  329. What is the significance

  330. of this moment?

  331. In this moment,

  332. in this darkness,

  333. with this statement

  334. of being forsaken

  335. by the Father,

  336. Jesus becomes our sin bearer.

  337. He takes our sin.

  338. He suffers in our place.

  339. Verse 35.

  340. Just as today,

  341. there were many people

  342. standing by

  343. who didn't get it.

  344. Some of the bystanders

  345. hearing it said,

  346. behold,

  347. he is calling Elijah.

  348. And someone ran

  349. and filled a sponge

  350. with sour wine

  351. to put it on a reed

  352. and gave it to him

  353. to drink saying,

  354. wait,

  355. let us see

  356. whether Elijah

  357. will come

  358. to take him down.

  359. Now,

  360. I need to leave it

  361. to you

  362. to do some

  363. of the digging

  364. necessary

  365. to mind these verses

  366. or we'll never finish.

  367. As Alistair

  368. regularly says,

  369. you are sensible people

  370. and with a little effort

  371. you can determine

  372. these things,

  373. you can work

  374. these things out.

  375. The basic point here

  376. is that the Jews

  377. standing by

  378. completely misunderstood

  379. and misinterpreted

  380. Jesus' cry

  381. from the cross.

  382. And there's some

  383. explanation from this

  384. we could point to.

  385. If you look at the words

  386. that Mark gives us

  387. the Aramaic language

  388. that Jesus would have

  389. actually cried out,

  390. Eloi, Eloi,

  391. Lema Sabachthani,

  392. and then he translates

  393. it in Greek

  394. which we then have

  395. in English,

  396. my God,

  397. my God,

  398. why have you

  399. forsaken me?

  400. In Aramaic,

  401. there's only a single

  402. letter difference

  403. between the phrase

  404. my God

  405. and the name Elijah.

  406. If you take

  407. what for us

  408. in the text

  409. in verse 34

  410. is an O

  411. or in Greek

  412. would be an Omicron,

  413. you take that out

  414. and you just have

  415. the E-L-I,

  416. that would be

  417. the Aramaic word

  418. for Elijah.

  419. So it's possible

  420. that the people

  421. standing,

  422. the Jews at least,

  423. that were standing

  424. by the cross

  425. when they hear

  426. Jesus cry this out,

  427. they perhaps confuse

  428. his language

  429. and say he's calling

  430. out for Elijah.

  431. But why would they

  432. ever think that

  433. he would call out

  434. for Elijah

  435. in that moment?

  436. Scholars say

  437. there was a Jewish

  438. superstition at work

  439. in the first century

  440. where they viewed

  441. Elijah as sort of

  442. a patron saint

  443. in the way that

  444. some religions

  445. would view

  446. sainthood today.

  447. And that Elijah

  448. was the patron saint,

  449. so to speak,

  450. over righteous

  451. sufferers.

  452. And in unique

  453. cases of injustice,

  454. they could cry out

  455. to God

  456. and God would

  457. send Elijah.

  458. Now this is not

  459. actual,

  460. this is just in

  461. some of the

  462. rabbinic thought

  463. of the day.

  464. That God would

  465. send Elijah

  466. and Elijah

  467. would rescue

  468. them in some way

  469. in that moment.

  470. And it appears

  471. that this might

  472. be the best

  473. explanation

  474. for their confusion.

  475. So what did

  476. the people do?

  477. They gave him

  478. some wine vinegar.

  479. This is different

  480. from the drink,

  481. the narcotic

  482. that was offered

  483. to him earlier

  484. that we talked

  485. about last week.

  486. And they gave him

  487. this so that they

  488. could try to

  489. prolong his life

  490. long enough

  491. to see if Elijah

  492. would indeed come

  493. to rescue him.

  494. That's the language.

  495. Some bystanders

  496. hearing it said,

  497. behold,

  498. he's calling Elijah.

  499. They run and fill

  500. a sponge.

  501. John tells us

  502. Jesus had actually

  503. mentioned his thirst

  504. to prolong his life,

  505. to hear his voice

  506. perhaps more clearly.

  507. They usher this

  508. wine vinegar to him

  509. to refresh him

  510. in some way.

  511. And then they say,

  512. wait,

  513. let us see

  514. if Elijah

  515. will actually come.

  516. Let's see

  517. if he'll come

  518. to help him.

  519. Let's see

  520. if this might be

  521. some kind of proof

  522. that we have

  523. messed up here.

  524. James Edwards

  525. affirms this thought.

  526. The bystanders

  527. then,

  528. as some today,

  529. fail to see

  530. that Jesus fulfills

  531. God's plan

  532. of redemption

  533. precisely in

  534. his suffering

  535. by giving his life

  536. a ransom for many

  537. by taking the curse

  538. of humanity

  539. on himself.

  540. And here's the point

  541. I want to get

  542. across to you here.

  543. These people

  544. are staring

  545. directly at the cross

  546. but they can't see it.

  547. and I'm concerned

  548. that many Christian churches

  549. are filled

  550. with precisely

  551. this type of person.

  552. Their lives

  553. are surrounded

  554. by the clear truth

  555. of the gospel

  556. but they keep

  557. fiddling around

  558. with things

  559. that are entirely

  560. irrelevant

  561. to the true purpose

  562. of the cross.

  563. They wear crosses

  564. around their necks

  565. and offer prayers

  566. and public worship

  567. but the idea

  568. that Jesus

  569. absorbed the wrath

  570. of God

  571. in place

  572. of sinners

  573. is the furthest

  574. thing from their minds.

  575. And what a shame

  576. it would be

  577. to sit in service

  578. after service

  579. where the truth

  580. of the gospel

  581. is taught

  582. and preached

  583. and remain ignorant

  584. of its significance

  585. to your life.

  586. It would be like

  587. standing beside

  588. the cross

  589. gazing upon

  590. the crucifixion itself

  591. witnessing Jesus

  592. become the Savior

  593. but your only thought

  594. in that moment

  595. is I wonder

  596. who's going

  597. to save him.

  598. Fiddling around

  599. with things

  600. that don't matter.

  601. Fiddling around

  602. with things

  603. that are irrelevant.

  604. What a tragedy

  605. that would be.

  606. Well that's

  607. the judgment

  608. of God.

  609. Let's look at

  610. the finished work

  611. of atonement.

  612. The finished work

  613. of atonement.

  614. So if verses

  615. 33 to 36

  616. reveal the divine

  617. judgment of God

  618. being poured out

  619. on Jesus

  620. verses 37

  621. and 38

  622. communicate

  623. the sufficiency

  624. of Christ's death

  625. as an atonement

  626. for sin.

  627. Okay?

  628. So stick with me.

  629. First few verses

  630. God's judgment

  631. put on Christ.

  632. Now we see

  633. it worked.

  634. Okay?

  635. That's the point.

  636. The word we use

  637. for this

  638. in theological terms

  639. even in biblical terms

  640. is propitiation

  641. which just means

  642. that Christ's death

  643. totally satisfied

  644. appeased

  645. the wrath of God.

  646. We sing this

  647. in Christ alone.

  648. We sing this

  649. till on that cross

  650. as Jesus died

  651. the wrath of God

  652. was satisfied

  653. for every sin

  654. on him was laid

  655. here in the death

  656. of Christ

  657. I live.

  658. Okay?

  659. He took our place.

  660. He appeased

  661. God's wrath

  662. and that Jesus'

  663. sacrifice

  664. was sufficient

  665. to pay for our sins

  666. is proven

  667. in his resurrection.

  668. It's validated there.

  669. We'll get there

  670. in a couple of weeks

  671. but it's also

  672. clearly expressed here.

  673. Look at verse 37.

  674. Jesus uttered

  675. a loud cry

  676. and breathed

  677. his last.

  678. You say,

  679. well that doesn't

  680. really actually

  681. tell us anything,

  682. Jared.

  683. Well you're right.

  684. We have to go outside

  685. of Mark's gospel

  686. to actually piece this together.

  687. Mark doesn't identify

  688. exactly what Jesus cried

  689. only that he did cry out

  690. and I really think

  691. that the reason for that

  692. is in the brevity

  693. of his narrative

  694. he wants us

  695. to really see

  696. the response

  697. of the centurion

  698. to the way

  699. that Jesus cried.

  700. We'll get there

  701. in a minute.

  702. Just hang tight, okay?

  703. We have to go to Luke

  704. and John

  705. to find out

  706. what exactly

  707. Jesus cried out.

  708. They record

  709. two statements

  710. that constitute

  711. this loud cry

  712. that's mentioned

  713. by Mark.

  714. The first one

  715. we find in John 19

  716. and it is the cry

  717. it is finished.

  718. It is finished.

  719. I'll read the verse

  720. to you.

  721. John 19

  722. and verse 30

  723. when Jesus

  724. had received

  725. the sour wine

  726. he said

  727. it is finished

  728. and he bowed

  729. his head

  730. and gave up

  731. his spirit.

  732. So when Jesus

  733. musters up

  734. the strength

  735. to cry out

  736. it is finished

  737. he's not

  738. referring there

  739. to

  740. he is finished

  741. he's referring

  742. to the fact

  743. that his work

  744. is finished.

  745. John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  746. Jesus explicitly

  747. said

  748. his mission

  749. was from the

  750. father

  751. was to lay

  752. down his life

  753. and to take

  754. it up again

  755. for an atonement

  756. for sin.

  757. It is finished

  758. is Jesus'

  759. declaration

  760. that the task

  761. he was sent

  762. to accomplish

  763. has been

  764. fully

  765. and perfectly

  766. brought to

  767. completion.

  768. That's the

  769. significance

  770. of this statement.

  771. There's a Greek word

  772. I know you don't care

  773. about that I'm just

  774. going to tell you

  775. because it's helpful

  776. here.

  777. It's tetelestai

  778. tetelestai

  779. it's in the

  780. perfect tense

  781. which communicates

  782. a past action

  783. that has an

  784. ongoing effect

  785. if that makes sense.

  786. So it's in the

  787. past tense

  788. in one way

  789. but it's in the

  790. past tense

  791. not simply

  792. bringing completion

  793. to a moment

  794. but completion

  795. to an action

  796. that has

  797. lasting effects

  798. moving forward

  799. in the present

  800. and into the future.

  801. That's the language

  802. that Jesus uses here

  803. that Mark

  804. communicates Jesus

  805. or John

  806. communicates Jesus'

  807. language as.

  808. So Jesus

  809. was in essence

  810. saying

  811. it has been

  812. and it forever

  813. will be

  814. finished.

  815. And here's

  816. why that matters.

  817. The work

  818. that Jesus

  819. accomplished

  820. for us

  821. on the cross

  822. is an eternally

  823. finished

  824. work

  825. that will not

  826. be withdrawn

  827. and it cannot

  828. be undone.

  829. The sin

  830. that God

  831. poured out

  832. on his son

  833. will never

  834. have to be

  835. paid for

  836. again

  837. meaning

  838. that all

  839. who believe

  840. can rest assured

  841. in the promise

  842. of eternal

  843. salvation.

  844. What Jesus

  845. did on the cross

  846. was a once

  847. and for all

  848. work.

  849. It is finished.

  850. It is accomplished.

  851. And no matter

  852. how much

  853. on your worst

  854. day you feel

  855. like you just

  856. emotionally

  857. may not

  858. be saved

  859. you could

  860. never point

  861. to the sacrifice

  862. of Christ

  863. and say

  864. there was

  865. something lacking

  866. in what he

  867. did.

  868. He covered

  869. it all.

  870. He took

  871. it all.

  872. He drank

  873. the cup

  874. every last

  875. drop

  876. of God's

  877. wrath

  878. and in this

  879. moment

  880. at his

  881. dying breath

  882. he cries

  883. out

  884. my work

  885. is finished

  886. atonement

  887. has been

  888. made.

  889. And Paul

  890. tells us

  891. in Romans

  892. 6

  893. we know

  894. that Christ

  895. being raised

  896. from the

  897. dead

  898. will never

  899. die again.

  900. Death

  901. no longer

  902. has dominion

  903. over him

  904. for the

  905. death he

  906. died

  907. he died

  908. to sin

  909. once

  910. for all

  911. but the

  912. life he

  913. lives

  914. he lives

  915. to God

  916. and then

  917. Paul puts

  918. it in

  919. practical

  920. terms

  921. for us.

  922. So you

  923. also

  924. those who

  925. are in

  926. Christ

  927. those who

  928. are

  929. believers

  930. so you

  931. also

  932. must

  933. consider

  934. yourselves

  935. dead

  936. to sin

  937. and alive

  938. to God

  939. in Christ

  940. Jesus.

  941. It's a

  942. finished work

  943. accomplished

  944. by Jesus

  945. alone

  946. which means

  947. that it's

  948. sufficient

  949. to cover

  950. your sin

  951. for all

  952. of eternity.

  953. No more

  954. payment must

  955. be made.

  956. There's no

  957. place for you

  958. to go

  959. and be

  960. sent

  961. after this

  962. life

  963. to suffer

  964. to pay

  965. for what

  966. Jesus

  967. didn't

  968. pay for.

  969. No it's

  970. been paid.

  971. It's

  972. finished.

  973. Tetelestai.

  974. It's

  975. finished.

  976. Well he

  977. says another

  978. statement Luke

  979. tells us this

  980. one in Luke

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  981. chapter 23.

  982. Father

  983. into your

  984. hands

  985. I commit

  986. my spirit.

  987. Another

  988. quote from

  989. Psalm 22

  990. Luke 23

  991. and verse

  992. 46

  993. then Jesus

  994. calling out

  995. with a loud

  996. voice said

  997. Father

  998. into your

  999. hands I

  1000. commit my

  1001. spirit.

  1002. And having

  1003. said this

  1004. he breathed

  1005. his last.

  1006. This final

  1007. statement

  1008. affirms that

  1009. Jesus gave

  1010. his life.

  1011. It was not

  1012. taken from

  1013. him.

  1014. He gave

  1015. it.

  1016. Over and

  1017. over we

  1018. have seen

  1019. Jesus'

  1020. power and

  1021. opportunity

  1022. to overcome

  1023. his enemies

  1024. and escape

  1025. the agony

  1026. of the

  1027. cross.

  1028. His

  1029. adversaries

  1030. as he

  1031. hung on

  1032. the cross

  1033. we saw

  1034. last week

  1035. even taunted

  1036. him to

  1037. this end.

  1038. If you're

  1039. really the

  1040. Christ

  1041. save

  1042. yourself.

  1043. Take

  1044. yourself

  1045. off the

  1046. cross they

  1047. cried.

  1048. But again

  1049. they misunderstood

  1050. the whole

  1051. thing.

  1052. Jesus

  1053. didn't need

  1054. a savior.

  1055. this is

  1056. what he

  1057. had come

  1058. to do.

  1059. His life

  1060. wasn't

  1061. taken.

  1062. He gave

  1063. it.

  1064. He didn't

  1065. need a

  1066. savior.

  1067. As we

  1068. said last

  1069. week he

  1070. only needed

  1071. a cross

  1072. in order

  1073. that he

  1074. could become

  1075. the savior.

  1076. He wasn't

  1077. overcome by

  1078. death.

  1079. He willingly

  1080. surrendered to

  1081. it to

  1082. fulfill his

  1083. purpose.

  1084. And this

  1085. is the

  1086. mark of

  1087. a true

  1088. sufficient

  1089. sacrifice and

  1090. atonement for

  1091. sin.

  1092. John

    John 10:17

  1093. chapter 10

  1094. verse 17.

  1095. For this

  1096. reason Jesus

  1097. says the

  1098. father loves

  1099. me because

  1100. I lay down

  1101. my life that

  1102. I may take

  1103. it up again.

  1104. No one

  1105. takes it

  1106. from me.

  1107. I lay it

  1108. down of my

  1109. own accord.

  1110. I have

  1111. authority to

  1112. lay it

  1113. down.

  1114. I have

  1115. authority to

  1116. take it up

  1117. again.

  1118. This charge

  1119. I have

  1120. received from

  1121. my father.

  1122. So with

  1123. his last

  1124. cry it is

  1125. finished and

  1126. into your

  1127. hands I

  1128. commit my

  1129. spirit.

  1130. Jesus

  1131. says my

  1132. life isn't

  1133. taken.

  1134. I have

  1135. laid it

  1136. down.

  1137. And by

  1138. laying it

  1139. down I

  1140. have finished

  1141. the work

  1142. that God

  1143. sent me to

  1144. finish and

  1145. to accomplish.

  1146. But there's a

  1147. second part to

  1148. this.

  1149. Verse 38.

  1150. And the

  1151. curtain of

  1152. the temple

  1153. was torn

  1154. in two

  1155. from top

  1156. to bottom.

  1157. So as with

  1158. the issue of

  1159. God's

  1160. judgment,

  1161. Jesus'

  1162. words of

  1163. complete

  1164. atonement

  1165. are accompanied

  1166. then by a

  1167. visible sign.

  1168. God

  1169. we saw

  1170. in the

  1171. first

  1172. section,

  1173. right?

  1174. There's

  1175. this

  1176. visible

  1177. sign of

  1178. darkness,

  1179. God's

  1180. judgment,

  1181. and then

  1182. there's

  1183. the words

  1184. of Jesus

  1185. that affirm

  1186. it.

  1187. My

  1188. God,

  1189. my

  1190. God,

  1191. why have

  1192. you

  1193. forsaken

  1194. me?

  1195. And we

  1196. see the

  1197. same thing

  1198. happening

  1199. here.

  1200. With

  1201. the

  1202. sufficiency

  1203. of his

  1204. work,

  1205. he cries

  1206. out,

  1207. into your

  1208. hands I

  1209. commit my

  1210. spirit.

  1211. It is

  1212. finished.

  1213. And at

  1214. that moment,

  1215. at his

  1216. last breath,

  1217. God sends

  1218. another visible

  1219. sign.

  1220. It is the

  1221. curtain,

  1222. the veil in

  1223. the temple

  1224. was torn

  1225. from top

  1226. to bottom.

  1227. There were

  1228. two veils

  1229. in the

  1230. temple,

  1231. and there's

  1232. some debate

  1233. regarding which

  1234. curtain the

  1235. gospel authors

  1236. were referring

  1237. to.

  1238. We don't

  1239. have to get

  1240. into that

  1241. now.

  1242. I believe

  1243. that the

  1244. evidence suggests

  1245. that it

  1246. was the

  1247. veil that

  1248. divided the

  1249. holy place

  1250. from the

  1251. holy of

  1252. holies.

  1253. The

  1254. innermost

  1255. chamber

  1256. where only

  1257. God

  1258. dwelled,

  1259. or the

  1260. presence of

  1261. God was

  1262. believed to

  1263. have

  1264. dwelled.

  1265. Why does

  1266. any of

  1267. this matter?

  1268. Well,

  1269. God tears

  1270. it from

  1271. top to

  1272. bottom.

  1273. I think

  1274. there's

  1275. probably

  1276. some

  1277. symbolism

  1278. in

  1279. that,

  1280. that this

  1281. was not

  1282. an act

  1283. of man,

  1284. this was

  1285. a divine

  1286. act from

  1287. top to

  1288. bottom.

  1289. Maybe

  1290. that's

  1291. reading too

  1292. much into

  1293. it,

  1294. that's okay.

  1295. But why

  1296. does it

  1297. matter?

  1298. Once a

  1299. year,

  1300. on the

  1301. day of

  1302. atonement,

  1303. the high

  1304. priest,

  1305. he's the

  1306. only one

  1307. that could

  1308. do it,

  1309. would enter

  1310. into the

  1311. holy of

  1312. holies,

  1313. and he

  1314. would make

  1315. an atonement

  1316. for the sins

  1317. of the

  1318. nation.

  1319. And like

  1320. all the

  1321. other

  1322. sacrifices

  1323. that God

  1324. demanded,

  1325. it was

  1326. insufficient.

  1327. It couldn't

  1328. truly atone

  1329. for sins

  1330. because God

  1331. said you

  1332. have to

  1333. do it

  1334. over and

  1335. over and

  1336. over and

  1337. over and

  1338. over and

  1339. over and

  1340. over.

  1341. There was

  1342. no end

  1343. to it.

  1344. It was

  1345. insufficient.

  1346. And so

  1347. every year,

  1348. the high

  1349. priest would

  1350. do the

  1351. thing the

  1352. way that

  1353. God had

  1354. instructed

  1355. for him

  1356. to do

  1357. it.

  1358. By tearing

  1359. the curtain,

  1360. God

  1361. declares

  1362. that it

  1363. is through

  1364. Jesus'

  1365. sacrificial

  1366. death that

  1367. we now

  1368. have access

  1369. to him.

  1370. James

  1371. Edwards,

  1372. again,

  1373. the holy

  1374. of holies,

  1375. which was

  1376. believed to

  1377. contain the

  1378. very presence

  1379. of Yahweh,

  1380. is made

  1381. accessible not

  1382. by the high

  1383. priest's

  1384. sacrifice on

  1385. the day of

  1386. atonement,

  1387. but by the

  1388. atonement of

  1389. Jesus on

  1390. the cross.

  1391. The writer of

  1392. Hebrews affirms

  1393. this,

  1394. therefore,

  1395. brothers,

  1396. since we

  1397. have confidence

  1398. to enter

  1399. the holy

  1400. places by

  1401. the blood

  1402. of Jesus,

  1403. let us

  1404. draw near

  1405. with a

  1406. true heart

  1407. in full

  1408. assurance

  1409. of faith.

  1410. That's the

  1411. significance.

  1412. What does it

  1413. mean?

  1414. His work

  1415. was sufficient.

  1416. It did

  1417. what it was

  1418. supposed to

  1419. do,

  1420. and nothing

  1421. was left

  1422. out.

  1423. Now,

  1424. remember,

  1425. the ultimate

  1426. tragedy of

  1427. sin is that

  1428. it separates

  1429. us from

  1430. God in

  1431. eternity,

  1432. not only in

  1433. this life,

  1434. but eternally.

  1435. Jesus endured

  1436. that separation

  1437. on the cross

  1438. so that we

  1439. might be

  1440. reconciled to

  1441. God,

  1442. the Father,

  1443. and in the

  1444. rending of

  1445. the veil,

  1446. we have a

  1447. visible expression

  1448. of that being

  1449. accomplished.

  1450. We now,

  1451. all,

  1452. each of us,

  1453. have access

  1454. to the Father

  1455. through the

  1456. work,

  1457. the finished

  1458. work of

  1459. Jesus Christ

  1460. on the

  1461. cross.

  1462. Judgment

  1463. of God,

  1464. finished work

  1465. of atonement.

  1466. The last two

  1467. will be quicker,

  1468. okay?

  1469. Number three.

  1470. I want you to

  1471. see the response

  1472. of faith.

  1473. The response

  1474. of faith.

  1475. Verse 39,

  1476. when the

  1477. centurion who

  1478. stood facing

  1479. him saw

  1480. that in this

  1481. way he breathed

  1482. his last,

  1483. he said,

  1484. truly this

  1485. man was

  1486. the Son

  1487. of God.

  1488. This is a

  1489. dramatic and

  1490. powerful

  1491. conclusion that

  1492. its brevity

  1493. makes it seem

  1494. like it isn't

  1495. such,

  1496. but this is

  1497. actually a

  1498. pivotal moment

  1499. in Mark's

  1500. gospel.

  1501. In the

  1502. centurion's

  1503. confession,

  1504. we find what

  1505. is the

  1506. desired result

  1507. of Christ's

  1508. work.

  1509. Salvation

  1510. by grace

  1511. through faith.

  1512. And the

  1513. fact of

  1514. Jesus'

  1515. sacrificial

  1516. death does

  1517. not automatically

  1518. make every

  1519. person forgiven

  1520. and reconciled

  1521. to God.

  1522. Please don't

  1523. mistake that.

  1524. Just because

  1525. Jesus died

  1526. doesn't mean he

  1527. all of a sudden

  1528. takes a blanket

  1529. of atonement

  1530. and just cast it

  1531. over everybody

  1532. throughout all of

  1533. eternity and

  1534. everybody is just

  1535. saved no matter

  1536. what you do

  1537. regardless of your

  1538. life or your

  1539. heart or anything

  1540. else.

  1541. He doesn't do

  1542. that.

  1543. That's not

  1544. what his

  1545. atonement

  1546. does.

  1547. The atoning

  1548. work of

  1549. Jesus requires

  1550. a response

  1551. of faith.

  1552. And there's

  1553. a lot that

  1554. we don't

  1555. know about

  1556. the centurion.

  1557. There's a

  1558. lot that

  1559. we can

  1560. suspect

  1561. and maybe

  1562. guess as to

  1563. what he

  1564. meant in

  1565. his mind

  1566. by this

  1567. confession.

  1568. But what

  1569. we want to

  1570. see is what

  1571. Mark intends

  1572. for us to

  1573. take away

  1574. from it.

  1575. And what

  1576. Mark's

  1577. purpose is

  1578. in recording

  1579. this is to

  1580. communicate the

  1581. only proper

  1582. response to

  1583. Jesus'

  1584. death.

  1585. And like I

  1586. said it's a

  1587. pivotal moment

  1588. in his

  1589. gospel.

  1590. It complements

  1591. both his

  1592. stated purpose

  1593. and Peter's

  1594. earlier confession.

  1595. And we've

  1596. talked about

  1597. this so much.

  1598. Mark chapter

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  1599. 1 and

  1600. verse 1.

  1601. The stated

  1602. purpose.

  1603. The beginning

  1604. of the gospel

  1605. of Jesus Christ

  1606. the Son of

  1607. God.

  1608. In other

  1609. words Mark

  1610. says what

  1611. I'm writing

  1612. to you is

  1613. the good

  1614. news.

  1615. I'm declaring

  1616. the good

  1617. news that

  1618. Jesus of

  1619. Nazareth

  1620. is the

  1621. Messiah

  1622. and the

  1623. Son of

  1624. God.

  1625. And we

  1626. get about

  1627. halfway

  1628. through his

  1629. gospel.

  1630. There's all

  1631. of this

  1632. build up

  1633. for Jesus'

  1634. identity.

  1635. And we

  1636. get about

  1637. halfway

  1638. through in

  1639. chapter 8

  1640. and Jesus

  1641. looks at

  1642. his disciples

  1643. and he

  1644. says but

  1645. who do

  1646. you say

  1647. that I

  1648. am?

  1649. And Peter

  1650. has this

  1651. monumental

  1652. confession.

  1653. He doesn't

  1654. even fully

  1655. understand all

  1656. of this but

  1657. it's a

  1658. confession

  1659. nonetheless.

  1660. And he

  1661. says you

  1662. are the

  1663. Christ.

  1664. Check mark

  1665. number one

  1666. with Mark's

  1667. stated purpose.

  1668. And then we

  1669. go a little

  1670. further and we

  1671. begin to see

  1672. more of

  1673. Jesus'

  1674. identity

  1675. unfolded.

  1676. We see

  1677. the explicit

  1678. details of

  1679. his purpose

  1680. in becoming

  1681. the Messiah

  1682. and then we

  1683. get to this

  1684. pivotal moment

  1685. at the

  1686. sacrifice of

  1687. Christ and

  1688. what do we

  1689. find once

  1690. again?

  1691. Another

  1692. confession.

  1693. This time

  1694. it's not

  1695. from a Jew

  1696. and it's

  1697. not from a

  1698. disciple.

  1699. It's from

  1700. a Gentile

  1701. Roman soldier

  1702. who was just

  1703. responsible for

  1704. nailing him

  1705. to the cross

  1706. and he cries

  1707. out truly

  1708. this is the

  1709. Son of God.

  1710. God.

  1711. This is

  1712. significant to

  1713. Mark's

  1714. gospel.

  1715. And what is

  1716. it that he's

  1717. telling us?

  1718. He's telling

  1719. us that the

  1720. pair of

  1721. confessions

  1722. from Peter

  1723. and the

  1724. centurion

  1725. constitute

  1726. the only

  1727. saving

  1728. response to

  1729. the person

  1730. and work

  1731. of Jesus

  1732. Christ.

  1733. No person

  1734. merely hears

  1735. the gospel

  1736. and is all

  1737. of a sudden

  1738. okay with

  1739. God.

  1740. No,

  1741. there is a

  1742. required response

  1743. of faith

  1744. in who

  1745. Jesus is

  1746. and what

  1747. he has

  1748. done.

  1749. True

  1750. conversion

  1751. occurs when

  1752. an individual

  1753. by faith

  1754. acknowledges

  1755. Jesus'

  1756. identity,

  1757. trusts wholly

  1758. in his

  1759. atoning

  1760. work,

  1761. and devotes

  1762. himself to

  1763. the lordship

  1764. of Christ.

  1765. Now,

  1766. it's clear

  1767. the centurion

  1768. probably didn't

  1769. understand all

  1770. of those

  1771. things but

  1772. there's one

  1773. thing he

  1774. understood in

  1775. that moment

  1776. in this

  1777. confession at

  1778. least,

  1779. that Jesus

  1780. is the

  1781. Son of

  1782. God.

  1783. And Mark

  1784. intends for

  1785. us to see

  1786. that here.

  1787. And there's

  1788. also something

  1789. to be said

  1790. here about

  1791. the contrast

  1792. between the

  1793. centurion

  1794. and the

  1795. Jews in

  1796. verse 35.

  1797. The Jews

  1798. were the

  1799. privileged

  1800. ones.

  1801. They had

  1802. the scriptures.

  1803. They had

  1804. the prophets.

  1805. They had

  1806. the promises.

  1807. They were

  1808. the ones

  1809. who were

  1810. eyewitnesses

  1811. to Jesus'

  1812. power,

  1813. to his

  1814. miracles.

  1815. They heard

  1816. his teaching.

  1817. They heard

  1818. the authority

  1819. with which

  1820. he taught.

  1821. If anyone

  1822. should have

  1823. recognized what

  1824. was happening

  1825. and wholeheartedly

  1826. believed,

  1827. it was the

  1828. Jews.

  1829. But it

  1830. wasn't the

  1831. Jews that

  1832. made the

  1833. confession.

  1834. It was the

  1835. centurion who

  1836. Mark displays

  1837. as the one

  1838. with the

  1839. proper

  1840. understanding

  1841. and the

  1842. necessary

  1843. confession.

  1844. But how

  1845. can this

  1846. be?

  1847. How can the

  1848. centurion and

  1849. the bystanders

  1850. witness the

  1851. same exact

  1852. moment,

  1853. but only

  1854. the centurion

  1855. respond in

  1856. faith?

  1857. Is it not

  1858. the grace

  1859. of God

  1860. that intrudes

  1861. upon the

  1862. heart and

  1863. heart of

  1864. men and

  1865. women and

  1866. draws them

  1867. to his

  1868. son?

  1869. Is he

  1870. intruding

  1871. upon your

  1872. heart

  1873. today?

  1874. Today?

  1875. Is he

  1876. calling you

  1877. to make

  1878. this

  1879. response of

  1880. faith today?

  1881. Not to

  1882. just see

  1883. your sin

  1884. in a

  1885. theoretical

  1886. sense,

  1887. not to

  1888. see Jesus

  1889. as a

  1890. historical

  1891. figure that

  1892. we can

  1893. learn a

  1894. lot about,

  1895. but to

  1896. see him

  1897. as the

  1898. only

  1899. savior

  1900. who has

  1901. made a

  1902. complete

  1903. atonement

  1904. for sin

  1905. and by

  1906. response

  1907. you will

  1908. cast your

  1909. faith

  1910. wholly on

  1911. him,

  1912. following

  1913. him as

  1914. a

  1915. faithful

  1916. disciple.

  1917. Is God

  1918. doing that

  1919. work on

  1920. your heart?

  1921. Do you

  1922. sense his

  1923. call?

  1924. Do you

  1925. feel his

  1926. draw to

  1927. believe?

  1928. The only

  1929. saving

  1930. response is

  1931. the one

  1932. that confesses

  1933. Christ and

  1934. trusts wholly

  1935. in him.

  1936. Response

  1937. of faith,

  1938. finally,

  1939. we see the

  1940. provision of

  1941. witnesses.

  1942. Verse 40,

  1943. there were

  1944. also women

  1945. looking on

  1946. from a

  1947. distance,

  1948. among whom

  1949. were Mary

  1950. Magdalene,

  1951. Mary the

  1952. mother of

  1953. James the

  1954. younger,

  1955. and of

  1956. Joseph

  1957. and

  1958. Salome.

  1959. When he

  1960. was in

  1961. Galilee,

  1962. they followed

  1963. him and

  1964. ministered

  1965. to him,

  1966. and there

  1967. were also

  1968. many other

  1969. women who

  1970. came up

  1971. with him

  1972. to Jerusalem.

  1973. So here

  1974. Mark,

  1975. in conclusion,

  1976. introduces us

  1977. to a group

  1978. of women

  1979. present at

  1980. Jesus'

  1981. crucifixion,

  1982. and then he's

  1983. going to

  1984. mention them

  1985. again,

  1986. present at

  1987. Jesus'

  1988. burial,

  1989. and then

  1990. once again

  1991. at Jesus'

  1992. resurrection.

  1993. Mary Magdalene,

  1994. literally Mary

  1995. from Magdala,

  1996. was healed

  1997. by Jesus

  1998. according to

  1999. Luke chapter

  2000. eight,

  2001. after being

  2002. possessed by

  2003. seven demons.

  2004. The second

  2005. Mary was the

  2006. mother of two

  2007. individuals who

  2008. apparently were

  2009. known well among

  2010. the early church,

  2011. James the

  2012. younger,

  2013. and Joses.

  2014. Salome,

  2015. we're told,

  2016. in chapter

  2017. 16,

  2018. was the

  2019. mother of

  2020. the sons of

  2021. Zebedee,

  2022. the sons of

  2023. thunder,

  2024. James and

  2025. John.

  2026. they're from

  2027. Galilee,

  2028. they were

  2029. followers of

  2030. Jesus,

  2031. they ministered

  2032. to him and

  2033. to his

  2034. disciples in

  2035. their travels,

  2036. and the

  2037. question is,

  2038. why does

  2039. Mark care to

  2040. mention them

  2041. here?

  2042. Sinclair

  2043. Ferguson gives

  2044. this a

  2045. succinct answer

  2046. to this,

  2047. because they

  2048. were eyewitnesses

  2049. of the central

  2050. facts of the

  2051. Christian gospel,

  2052. which were to

  2053. be enshrined in

  2054. the great creeds

  2055. and hymns of

  2056. the Christian

  2057. church,

  2058. as well as in

  2059. the rest of

  2060. the New

  2061. Testament.

  2062. Why does

  2063. Mark mention

  2064. them?

  2065. Because by

  2066. God's grace,

  2067. he provided

  2068. witnesses of

  2069. all of these

  2070. things.

  2071. We know

  2072. these crucial

  2073. truths because

  2074. these faithful

  2075. women were

  2076. willing to

  2077. share them

  2078. with someone

  2079. else.

  2080. They were

  2081. willing to

  2082. tell others.

  2083. God used

  2084. them in

  2085. history at

  2086. the very

  2087. first evangelist

  2088. regarding the

  2089. crucifixion and

  2090. resurrection.

  2091. They probably

  2092. hadn't pieced it

  2093. all together,

  2094. they hadn't

  2095. connected all

  2096. the dots,

  2097. but they

  2098. were at least

  2099. willing to

  2100. be there,

  2101. something that

  2102. the disciples

  2103. were not

  2104. willing to

  2105. be.

  2106. And they

  2107. witnessed these

  2108. things,

  2109. they heard

  2110. these words,

  2111. they saw

  2112. where he

  2113. was,

  2114. they witnessed

  2115. the empty

  2116. tomb,

  2117. and they

  2118. go and they

  2119. tell others,

  2120. simple thing

  2121. to do.

  2122. There was

  2123. nothing flashy

  2124. about them,

  2125. there was

  2126. nothing charismatic

  2127. as far as we

  2128. can tell about

  2129. their personalities.

  2130. these.

  2131. As far as the

  2132. scriptures are

  2133. concerned,

  2134. there's no

  2135. listing of a

  2136. particular gift

  2137. that they had

  2138. that made

  2139. them particularly

  2140. suited for this

  2141. task.

  2142. They were

  2143. ordinary women

  2144. who loved

  2145. Jesus and

  2146. were at some

  2147. point willing to

  2148. share with

  2149. others what

  2150. they had seen

  2151. and heard.

  2152. And loved

  2153. ones, this is

  2154. the pattern we're

  2155. called to follow.

  2156. Those who

  2157. know the

  2158. truth and

  2159. have been

  2160. saved by the

  2161. gospel of

  2162. God's grace

  2163. must lovingly

  2164. and willingly

  2165. share what we

  2166. have seen and

  2167. heard with

  2168. others.

  2169. Tell someone

  2170. you don't need

  2171. a particular

  2172. gifting,

  2173. you don't need

  2174. a particular

  2175. charisma to be

  2176. a faithful

  2177. witness,

  2178. you need only

  2179. be a willing

  2180. vessel.

  2181. through which

  2182. God might

  2183. use to draw

  2184. sinners to

  2185. himself.

  2186. Some of you

  2187. are parents,

  2188. your job is

  2189. to be these

  2190. women to

  2191. your kids,

  2192. to tell these

  2193. truths of the

  2194. gospel to

  2195. your children.

  2196. Most of you

  2197. are neighbors.

  2198. Your mission,

  2199. tell these

  2200. truths to

  2201. your neighbors.

  2202. most of you

  2203. have coworkers.

  2204. Your mission,

  2205. not just to

  2206. be a good

  2207. employee.

  2208. What a waste

  2209. that would be

  2210. to merely have

  2211. an existence

  2212. where you're

  2213. just a good

  2214. employee.

  2215. How might

  2216. God use

  2217. you to

  2218. just tell

  2219. what you've

  2220. seen and

  2221. what you've

  2222. heard?

  2223. God,

  2224. Paul tells

  2225. us in

  2226. Romans

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  2227. chapter 10

  2228. that everyone

  2229. who calls

  2230. on the name

  2231. of the

  2232. Lord will

  2233. be saved

  2234. and then he

  2235. immediately

  2236. follows that

  2237. up.

  2238. But how

  2239. then will

  2240. they call

  2241. on him

  2242. whom they

  2243. have not

  2244. believed?

  2245. And how

  2246. will they

  2247. believe

  2248. in whom

  2249. they have

  2250. never

  2251. heard?

  2252. And how

  2253. shall they

  2254. hear?

  2255. Unless

  2256. someone preaches

  2257. to them the

  2258. gospel.

  2259. gospel.

  2260. For faith

  2261. comes by

  2262. hearing and

  2263. hearing comes

  2264. by the

  2265. word of

  2266. God and

  2267. we are the

  2268. ones who

  2269. have the

  2270. word of

  2271. God.

  2272. Which is

  2273. why we

  2274. gather on

  2275. a Saturday

  2276. morning every

  2277. now and

  2278. then to

  2279. take 1200

  2280. Bibles and

  2281. just put them

  2282. on the

  2283. doorstep of

  2284. people's

  2285. houses.

  2286. It's the

  2287. easiest possible

  2288. thing that we

  2289. can do.

  2290. And some

  2291. people love

  2292. it.

  2293. I've already

  2294. gotten two

  2295. emails about

  2296. it from

  2297. yesterday.

  2298. One was

  2299. really positive

  2300. and one was

  2301. really negative.

  2302. We always get

  2303. the negative

  2304. ones.

  2305. That's okay.

  2306. But over the

  2307. course of the

  2308. last year and

  2309. a half we've

  2310. handed out

  2311. 4,000 Bibles

  2312. in these

  2313. neighborhoods and

  2314. less than

  2315. 10 people have

  2316. actually sent an

  2317. email to comment

  2318. on it whether

  2319. good or bad.

  2320. Some people

  2321. might have

  2322. thrown it into

  2323. a drawer.

  2324. Some people

  2325. might have

  2326. put it on a

  2327. shelf.

  2328. Some people

  2329. might have

  2330. given it to

  2331. Goodwill as

  2332. we've seen.

  2333. That's fine.

  2334. Some people

  2335. have stuck it

  2336. in their

  2337. community book

  2338. sharing things.

  2339. That's fine too.

  2340. Some people

  2341. have thrown them

  2342. in the trash

  2343. no doubt as

  2344. well and they've

  2345. been kind

  2346. enough to send

  2347. us the pictures

  2348. when they do.

  2349. All of those

  2350. things are true.

  2351. But there's a

  2352. lot of people

  2353. who have a

  2354. Bible sitting

  2355. in their house

  2356. right now because

  2357. one of you took

  2358. it and put it

  2359. on their doorstep.

  2360. You say,

  2361. what does that

  2362. even matter?

  2363. I didn't even

  2364. talk to them.

  2365. But you did

  2366. something and

  2367. maybe at some

  2368. point, maybe it's

  2369. this week or

  2370. maybe it's this

  2371. year or maybe

  2372. it's five years

  2373. from now, maybe

  2374. it's ten years

  2375. from now and

  2376. they're at a

  2377. point in their

  2378. life where

  2379. they're desperate

  2380. for answers and

  2381. God is doing a

  2382. work in their

  2383. heart and they

  2384. walk over and

  2385. they pick up

  2386. that Bible and

  2387. they open it up

  2388. where the bookmark

  2389. is which is

  2390. John chapter one and

  2391. the first thing

  2392. that they see is

  2393. the word became

  2394. flesh and dwelt

  2395. among us and

  2396. we have seen his

  2397. glory.

  2398. The glory is of

  2399. the only son of

  2400. the begotten.

  2401. And perhaps God

  2402. uses his word in

  2403. that person.

  2404. It's like, you

  2405. see, you don't

  2406. have to have a

  2407. particular charisma.

  2408. You don't have to

  2409. be gifted in a

  2410. particular way.

  2411. You just have to

  2412. be willing.

  2413. You just have to

  2414. be willing to have

  2415. somebody over to

  2416. your house and in

  2417. the process of that

  2418. talk about everything

  2419. you want to talk

  2420. about and talk

  2421. about the sports

  2422. and talk about the

  2423. goals and talk

  2424. about work and

  2425. the weather and

  2426. all the things if

  2427. you want to talk

  2428. about it.

  2429. At some point,

  2430. just tell them,

  2431. I just can't let

  2432. this time go by

  2433. without at least

  2434. telling you that

  2435. I'm a Christian

  2436. and I love Jesus

  2437. and I care about

  2438. your soul.

  2439. I care about

  2440. your soul.

  2441. And you can't do

  2442. anything to save

  2443. that person, but

  2444. you can tell them

  2445. what you've seen

  2446. and what you've

  2447. heard and you can

  2448. pray in the process

  2449. of that, that God

  2450. will intrude upon

  2451. their hearts in the

  2452. way that it seems

  2453. like he might have

  2454. intruded on the

  2455. heart of that

  2456. centurion to which

  2457. they would call out

  2458. in faith.

  2459. You say, you get

  2460. all that from these

  2461. women?

  2462. Yeah.

  2463. That's all they had

  2464. to do.

  2465. They didn't even

  2466. understand it all.

  2467. They didn't even

  2468. understand it all.

  2469. People surely would

  2470. have asked them

  2471. questions.

  2472. Well, now what did

  2473. he mean by that?

  2474. I don't know.

  2475. It's just what he

  2476. said.

  2477. Eventually, they would

2478. figure it out and I'm

  2479. sure they told more

  2480. people.

2481. And here we are today,

  2482. 2,000 years later,

  2483. we're reading their

  2484. eyewitness account so

2485. that we can know the

2486. truth of the gospel and

2487. we can believe and we

2488. can teach our kids and

2489. we can share it with

  2490. others.

  2491. That's by God's grace.

  2492. He has provided those

  2493. witnesses.

2494. He has provided us as

  2495. witnesses.

2496. The death of Christ is no

  2497. ordinary death.

  2498. The wrath of God's

  2499. judgment was poured out

2500. on him as he bore our

  2501. sins on the cross.

  2502. His death was a

  2503. sacrifice sufficient to

  2504. save all who will

  2505. believe for all of

  2506. eternity.

2507. But his death demands a

  2508. response, a response of

  2509. faith, trusting in his

  2510. finished work, following

  2511. him in faithful

  2512. discipleship.

2513. And part of that faithful

  2514. discipleship is sharing

  2515. this glorious gospel with

  2516. someone else.

  2517. will you receive that

  2518. gift today?

  2519. Is he intruding upon

  2520. your heart?

  2521. Will you give the

  2522. response of faith that

2523. shows that work that he's

  2524. done in you?

2525. And if you have, will you

  2526. share it with someone

  2527. else?

  2528. Will you tell someone

  2529. else?

  2530. Will you tell someone

  2531. else?
