  1. Well, the good news of great joy that shines through the Christmas story is radically transformative

  2. for those who respond to it in faith.

  3. Of course, if you've been a Christian for very long at all, you know that to be true.

  4. But the joy itself is actually a part of that transformation.

  5. True joy that transcends the more basic feelings of happiness and sadness

  6. is only experienced by individuals who, like Mary, take God at His Word

  7. and receive by faith the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  8. That's what we learned through the angel's announcement to Mary last week

  9. as we begin this study in Luke chapter 1 and 2.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  10. The angel's message was one of God's grace and salvation,

  11. particularly through the incarnation of Christ.

  12. That Mary, the virgin, would conceive a child

  13. and that this child would be the Son of God

  14. and the Messiah born to die, actually,

  15. providing salvation by God's grace for all who will believe and follow Him.

  16. And Mary's total trust in this, taking God at His Word,

  17. is reflected in her response in verse 38.

  18. You've got your Bible open.

  19. Just look at it there, just one verse up from where we began.

  20. In verse 38, Mary responds by saying,

  21. Behold, I am the servant of the Lord.

  22. Let it be to me according to your word.

  23. And we have in this little statement just a wonderful reflection

  24. of what it means to respond to the gospel message in faith,

  25. in a true saving faith.

  26. Mary hears the Word of God.

  27. She understands, or at least begins to understand,

  28. the fact of the gospel as it is represented in this child that she will have.

  29. And her response is not to shrink away from that.

  30. Her response actually is to say,

  31. I belong to the Lord.

  32. I will believe Him and I will follow Him in whatever path He leads me.

  33. In today's text, we see the beginnings of how God continues to produce gospel joy

  34. in the lives of those who come to Him in faith.

  35. And what's unmistakable in this passage

  36. is that this ongoing work of God's grace

  37. is accomplished in the context of a community of believers.

  38. This section is about how God directed Mary to a community of faith

  39. where she was united with people of a common belief,

  40. common experience, and a common hope.

  41. And of course, all of this commonality,

  42. all of this unity is founded ultimately

  43. on their mutual faith in the gospel of Christ.

  44. That's what we see unfolding here with Mary and Elizabeth.

  45. And what we find here is that this is actually evidence of God's loving kindness.

  46. It's His tender care that is revealed as He brings Mary and Elizabeth together

  47. in these critical moments of their lives.

  48. Now we need to think about this for just a moment from Mary's perspective.

  49. Remember what we talked about last week.

  50. Mary, Mary at this point, is probably somewhere between 12 and 14 years old.

  51. Okay, Ashlyn, this month, in two weeks, Ashlyn's going to turn 11.

  52. Can you imagine?

  53. Chelsea's about to turn 12.

  54. Can you imagine Chelsea coming to church here in just a few months

  55. and saying, hey, I've got news.

  56. An angel came to me and said that,

  57. though I'm a virgin, I actually have a child in my womb,

  58. and it's actually going to be the one who saves us all from sin and hell.

  59. And what a difficult thing that would be for Chelsea in particular

  60. to understand that and to believe it,

  61. but then to actually try to get anyone else to believe it as well.

  62. That would actually be a very lonely place for her, right?

  63. Because none of us would believe her.

  64. Even if her parents tried to agree with the news that she was sharing,

  65. none of us are going to believe Deborah in that either,

  66. because we would say that's not possible.

  67. That's not possible.

  68. And it would be a very lonely place.

  69. Now imagine you're Mary, and that's your exact circumstance.

  70. She has this news that's been delivered by an angel

  71. whom no one has seen except for Zechariah.

  72. No one has seen in at least 400 years

  73. any kind of prophetic word that has come directly from the Lord.

  74. And Mary, the 12 or 13-year-old from Nazareth of all places,

  75. is the one where he decides to appear.

  76. That's a lonely place to be.

  77. And what we see unfolding in this passage

  78. is God in his providence brings Mary to Elizabeth.

  79. And in this moment, they share a commonality of faith,

  80. a commonality of miraculous works of God's grace in their lives.

  81. And Mary has at least in one other person

  82. someone she can speak to,

  83. someone she can be encouraged by,

  84. someone who understands her circumstance and her condition.

  85. That's a grace of the Lord in her life.

  86. God united them in gospel companionship,

  87. which produced prophetic assurances

  88. that strengthen their faith all the more.

  89. And then this work of God overflowed in young Mary

  90. through this dynamic worship

  91. as she reflected on God fulfilling his promises.

  92. And I want to suggest to you this morning

  93. that God's kindness through joyful gospel community

  94. is not isolated to exceptional circumstances like Mary's.

  95. It's actually his good design for all Christians.

  96. It's his good design for you and me as well.

  97. If you know Christ,

  98. if you are a follower of Jesus,

  99. you're a true disciple of Jesus,

  100. you can go into this world

  101. and you can share the news

  102. about the miracle that God is working in your life.

  103. And most people will not believe you.

  104. And it'll be a lonely place.

  105. But God in his providence

  106. brings us together

  107. with other people

  108. who have experienced the same miracle

  109. of God's grace in salvation.

  110. We call it the local church.

  111. And with these people,

  112. we find a commonality,

  113. a place where our faith is encouraged and strengthened,

  114. a place where we find true worship,

  115. spiritual growth.

  116. So just as the angelic announcement

  117. of verses 26 to 38

  118. reflect the gospel message,

  119. Mary's visit with Elizabeth

  120. reflects the gospel community

  121. that God desires for us to enjoy.

  122. This good news of great joy,

  123. as we're calling it,

  124. is something that we share together.

  125. And this is a helpful passage

  126. in reminding us of that.

  127. Three things I want to point out to you

  128. as we go through.

  129. And of course,

  130. I bit off more than I could chew with this.

  131. We're going to have to kind of

  132. do a very surface level approach

  133. to this section.

  134. But hang with me as we do that, okay?

  135. The first thing is this.

  136. We find gospel companionship.

  137. Gospel companionship.

  138. Look with me at verse 39.

  139. In those days,

  140. Mary arose

  141. and went with haste

  142. into the hill country

  143. to a town in Judah.

  144. And she entered the house of Zechariah

  145. and greeted Elizabeth.

  146. We can sense the excitement in Mary

  147. as she wasted no time

  148. in leaving Nazareth

  149. to pay a visit to Elizabeth

  150. in the mountains of Judea.

  151. The fact that she made haste here,

  152. as we see in verse 39,

  153. made haste to get there,

  154. shows the eagerness

  155. with which she desired

  156. to speak to Elizabeth.

  157. And why is it that she wants

  158. to go to Elizabeth?

  159. Because the angel has just told her

  160. in the previous passage

  161. not only that she would be pregnant

  162. and that her child would be

  163. the Son of God and the Messiah,

  164. but as a sign to assure her in that,

  165. Gabriel says to her,

  166. and God is doing this

  167. in your relative Elizabeth as well.

  168. So it's not entirely surprising

  169. that as soon as the angel leaves,

  170. Mary makes haste to go

  171. and find Elizabeth

  172. to see what is happening with her.

  173. This trip would have taken

  174. probably three to four days.

  175. And you can only imagine

  176. Mary's mind racing

  177. all the questions

  178. that were left unanswered

  179. by the angel that appeared to her.

  180. There's no mention of Mary's parents

  181. in all of this,

  182. which is strange, isn't it?

  183. We don't know if they believed her.

  184. We don't even know if she told them

  185. what was happening.

  186. All we know is that

  187. within a few days

  188. of Gabriel's announcement,

  189. Mary had worked out a way

  190. to travel 80 to 100 miles

  191. to see Elizabeth.

  192. Now the story of Zechariah

  193. and Elizabeth

  194. and their miraculous conception

  195. is recorded in other parts

  196. of the chapter.

  197. I'll leave it to you

  198. to read that on your own.

  199. But here's basically the synopsis.

  200. Zechariah was a Levite.

  201. He was fulfilling his duty

  202. serving in the temple

  203. in Jerusalem.

  204. And while he was performing

  205. that duty,

  206. this same angel appears to him

  207. basically with the same message

  208. that his wife

  209. was going to bear a child.

  210. Well, the problem with this,

  211. or at least the miracle of it,

  212. is that they were both

  213. well beyond childbearing years

  214. and Elizabeth had been

  215. physically unable

  216. to have children

  217. her entire life.

  218. So it's a miracle

  219. the same way,

  220. not in the same way

  221. as it is with Mary.

  222. We don't need to confuse the two.

  223. Elizabeth was not a virgin

  224. and Zechariah was the natural father

  225. of their baby.

  226. The miracle relates

  227. to their age

  228. and to their inability

  229. to have a child

  230. to begin with.

  231. But their child

  232. was no ordinary child either.

  233. He would later be known

  234. as John the Baptizer

  235. and he would be

  236. the prophetic forerunner

  237. of the Messiah,

  238. which the Old Testament

  239. had also prophesied.

  240. In fact,

  241. Gabriel uses

  242. a direct quote

  243. from the prophet Malachi here.

  244. Look back with me

  245. in chapter 1.

  246. Just look at verse 16.

  247. You'll put your eyes

  248. on it there.

  249. And he will turn

  250. many of the children

  251. of Israel

  252. to the Lord their God

  253. and he will go before him

  254. in the spirit

  255. and power of Elijah

  256. to turn the hearts

  257. of the fathers

  258. to the children

  259. and the disobedient

  260. to the wisdom

  261. of the just

  262. to make ready

  263. for the Lord

  264. a people prepared.

  265. Okay,

  266. that's a direct quotation

  267. from the prophet Malachi.

  268. There's other prophecies

  269. particularly in Isaiah,

  270. I believe,

  271. where the prophets

  272. had said God

  273. had spoken through them

  274. and said,

  275. not only am I going

  276. to eventually send

  277. the Messiah,

  278. but just before he arrives,

  279. I'm going to send

  280. another one.

  281. It's not another Messiah,

  282. another prophet.

  283. This prophet is going

  284. to preach

  285. in the wilderness.

  286. He's going to cry out

  287. preparing the way

  288. for the Lord Christ

  289. to come.

  290. He's preparing

  291. the hearts of the people

  292. and here comes

  293. the angel Gabriel.

  294. He appears to Zechariah

  295. in the temple

  296. and he says,

  297. this child

  298. will be this prophet

  299. and he will prepare

  300. the way

  301. for the Christ.

  302. Now,

  303. what I believe

  304. is noteworthy

  305. about Mary's travel

  306. to see Elizabeth

  307. is that the scriptures

  308. never indicate

  309. that she was told

  310. to go there.

  311. The angel didn't tell her

  312. to go see Elizabeth.

  313. He only told her

  314. that God was doing

  315. a miraculous work

  316. in Elizabeth as well.

  317. Now,

  318. it seems to have been

  319. Mary's natural instinct

  320. to seek out others

  321. whom the angel told her

  322. were also experiencing

  323. God's grace.

  324. And we can all relate

  325. to that instinct

  326. as we gravitate

  327. toward people

  328. with similar interests

  329. and similar experiences

  330. in life

  331. because life was not designed

  332. to be lived in isolation.

  333. That's why isolation

  334. and exile

  335. has been considered

  336. a judgment

  337. and a punishment

  338. going all the way back

  339. to the time

  340. that Cain murdered Abel.

  341. All the way to today.

  342. You get in trouble

  343. in prison,

  344. they send you

  345. to isolation.

  346. Some places

  347. you get in trouble,

  348. you break enough laws,

  349. they send you

  350. into exile.

  351. Why?

  352. Because life is not

  353. meant to be lived alone.

  354. It's not meant

  355. to be lived

  356. outside of community.

  357. And so we naturally

  358. gravitate toward people

  359. in which we find

  360. commonality

  361. and we unite with them

  362. in helping one another

  363. through life.

  364. But what's important

  365. to see about Mary's

  366. companionship

  367. with Elizabeth

  368. is that it was produced

  369. by their mutual faith

  370. in God's salvation,

  371. specifically through the child

  372. that was in Mary's womb.

  373. God had not only

  374. sent them

  375. with good news,

  376. messengers

  377. with good news

  378. of great joy,

  379. but He was providing them

  380. with gospel companionship

  381. that would encourage

  382. their hearts,

  383. it would strengthen

  384. their faith,

  385. it would deepen

  386. their worship

  387. because God

  388. has designed us

  389. to function

  390. within community.

  391. community.

  392. And nothing

  393. can compare

  394. to the kind

  395. of companionship

  396. that's experienced

  397. in gospel

  398. community

  399. with other people

  400. who have experienced

  401. the same miraculous

  402. touch of God

  403. through Christ Jesus.

  404. And this is exactly

  405. what God has provided

  406. to us in the church.

  407. It's a wonderful grace

  408. of the Lord

  409. that we have one another

  410. to share

  411. in spiritual community

  412. that's based

  413. on our union

  414. with Christ.

  415. And if you're a Christian,

  416. you've experienced

  417. this work

  418. and He desires

  419. to continue

  420. His work

  421. in your life

  422. through the local church.

  423. The blessing

  424. of Mary

  425. and Elizabeth's

  426. companionship

  427. reflects

  428. what we have together

  429. in Christ.

  430. And we should be

  431. just as eager

  432. as Mary

  433. to do

  434. as they did.

  435. To unite together.

  436. To be together.

  437. To encourage

  438. one another.

  439. To help

  440. one another.

  441. You say,

  442. how do we

  443. actually do that?

  444. How do we

  445. prioritize that?

  446. How do we

  447. show this

  448. eagerness

  449. and live this

  450. out in our lives?

  451. There's lots of ways

  452. that we do that.

  453. One way

  454. is that we

  455. eagerly

  456. make the trip.

  457. Just like Mary did.

  458. She wastes

  459. no time

  460. she sets

  461. aside

  462. everything else.

  463. She's in the process

  464. of preparing

  465. for marriage.

  466. That was an important

  467. time in her life.

  468. She sets

  469. aside

  470. these other things

  471. and she makes

  472. haste

  473. to get to

  474. where Elizabeth is.

  475. I think there's

  476. a picture in that

  477. for us.

  478. What do we do

  479. as believers?

  480. We set aside

  481. the other things

  482. of our life

  483. that would get

  484. in the way

  485. of this

  486. and we eagerly

  487. make the trip.

  488. We prioritize

  489. the gathering

  490. of God's people.

  491. Particularly

  492. in Sunday worship.

  493. But of course

  494. whenever we have

  495. other opportunities

  496. to do this

  497. as well.

  498. We prioritize

  499. one another.

  500. Prioritize time

  501. with one another.

  502. We work out

  503. our schedules

  504. to prioritize

  505. worship.

  506. Not find a place

  507. to fit it in

  508. if it works out.

  509. We share

  510. the work of God.

  511. We talk to one

  512. another about it.

  513. Here's what the

  514. Lord's doing

  515. in my life.

  516. Here's a joy

  517. that He has brought

  518. to my life

  519. this week.

  520. Here's a way

  521. that He's

  522. disciplining

  523. me right now.

  524. We sharpen

  525. one another

  526. in that way.

  527. We rejoice

  528. through worship.

  529. Not only

  530. in our

  531. Sunday gatherings

  532. we rejoice

  533. in worship

  534. when we go

  535. and sit at coffee

  536. and we reflect

  537. on the goodness

  538. of God

  539. in our lives.

  540. We lift our voices

  541. in praise

  542. and in prayer

  543. to the Lord

  544. through that.

  545. We have gospel

  546. companionship

  547. reflected here.

  548. Number two,

  549. we see prophetic

  550. assurances.

  551. Prophetic

  552. assurances.

  553. So the good

  554. news of Jesus

  555. brought great

  556. joy to Elizabeth

  557. which reassured

  558. Mary's heart.

  559. That's what we

  560. find here.

  561. One of the

  562. benefits of this

  563. gospel companionship

  564. is that God

  565. uses other

  566. believers to

  567. help us.

  568. Mary had already

  569. demonstrated faith

  570. in God's Word.

  571. We read that

  572. just a moment

  573. ago.

  574. But there's no

  575. doubt that she

  576. would have been

  577. seeking some

  578. reassurance

  579. and clarity

  580. from Elizabeth's

  581. experience.

  582. Isn't that the

  583. whole reason

  584. that the angel

  585. even told her

  586. about Elizabeth?

  587. Of course.

  588. There's two ways

  589. that God

  590. used this

  591. encounter

  592. to speak

  593. prophetic

  594. assurances

  595. to Mary's

  596. young heart.

  597. The first one

  598. is through

  599. John's prophecy.

  600. Look with me

  601. at verses

  602. 41 and 44.

  603. Verse 41,

  604. when Elizabeth

  605. heard the greeting

  606. of Mary,

  607. the baby

  608. leaped

  609. in her womb.

  610. Now look

  611. down at verse

  612. 44.

  613. This is how

  614. Elizabeth reflects

  615. on that.

  616. For behold,

  617. when the sound

  618. of your greeting

  619. came to my ears,

  620. the baby

  621. in my womb

  622. leaped

  623. for joy.

  624. Now this may

  625. come as a shock

  626. to you,

  627. but I have

  628. never

  629. personally

  630. been pregnant.

  631. I don't

  632. know what

  633. it's like

  634. to feel

  635. a baby's

  636. kick

  637. in my body.

  638. I've only

  639. been able

  640. to experience

  641. that through

  642. Julie,

  643. which is a

  644. unique experience,

  645. but not in the

  646. same way

  647. that it was

  648. for her.

  649. Many of you

  650. have experienced

  651. this before.

  652. We'd love to see

  653. all these

  654. children with us.

  655. Many of you

  656. have experienced

  657. this many times

  658. before.

  659. Every mother

  660. knows it.

  661. She knows

  662. what this is

  663. like,

  664. but there's

  665. something unique

  666. about what

  667. Elizabeth felt

  668. that day.

  669. This wasn't

  670. just any

  671. ordinary

  672. kick

  673. in Elizabeth's

  674. belly.

  675. Otherwise,

  676. Luke wouldn't

  677. have bothered

  678. to mention it,

  679. and she

  680. wouldn't have

  681. bothered to

  682. interpret it

  683. the way

  684. that she did.

  685. There was

  686. a prophet

  687. in Elizabeth's

  688. belly,

  689. and this

  690. was his

  691. first prophecy.

  692. When Mary

  693. greeted Elizabeth,

  694. the Spirit

  695. of God

  696. produced this

  697. joyous leap.

  698. That's what

  699. Elizabeth said.

  700. He leapt

  701. for joy.

  702. This was

  703. an emotional

  704. response from

  705. the fetus

  706. in Elizabeth's

  707. belly,

  708. which,

  709. just as a

  710. side note,

  711. is another

  712. reflection of

  713. the Bible

  714. stance on

  715. the personhood

  716. of children

  717. who are still

  718. in their

  719. mother's

  720. bellies.

  721. From what I

  722. understand,

  723. the custom

  724. of that day

  725. required particular

  726. forms of

  727. greetings.

  728. Mary would

  729. have had a

  730. particular greeting

  731. that showed

  732. great deference

  733. and respect

  734. for Elizabeth

  735. as an elder

  736. and as a

  737. respected person

  738. in their community

  739. and perhaps

  740. even in their

  741. family.

  742. But then

  743. John leaps

  744. in her belly

  745. indicating that

  746. John in this

  747. moment is

  748. showing that

  749. the one who

  750. really deserves

  751. the deference,

  752. the one who

  753. really deserves

  754. the reverence

  755. and respect

  756. is actually

  757. the young

  758. child in

  759. Mary's

  760. womb.

  761. And it's

  762. this joyous

  763. announcement

  764. of the

  765. Messiah

  766. that would

  767. mark

  768. John's

  769. ministry.

  770. John chapter

    John 1 chapter mention

  771. 1 and

  772. verse 6,

  773. there was a

  774. man sent

  775. from God

  776. whose name

  777. was John.

  778. He came

  779. as a

  780. witness

  781. to bear

  782. witness

  783. about the

  784. light

  785. that all

  786. might believe

  787. through him.

  788. He was

  789. not the

  790. light

  791. but came

  792. to bear

  793. witness

  794. about the

  795. light.

  796. And what

  797. is John

  798. doing

  799. from his

  800. earliest

  801. moments

  802. in his

  803. mother's

  804. womb?

  805. He's

  806. bearing

  807. witness

  808. about

  809. the

  810. light.

  811. And of

  812. course,

  813. this carries

  814. on into

  815. adulthood.

  816. In John

    John 3 chapter mention

  817. chapter 3,

  818. John says

  819. this,

  820. John the

  821. baptizer,

  822. the one

  823. who has

  824. the bride

  825. is the

  826. bridegroom.

  827. The friend

  828. of the

  829. bridegroom,

  830. that's what

  831. he was

  832. calling,

  833. referring to

  834. himself about,

  835. who stands

  836. and hears

  837. him,

  838. rejoices

  839. greatly at

  840. the bridegroom's

  841. voice.

  842. Therefore,

  843. this joy

  844. of mine

  845. is now

  846. complete.

  847. He must

  848. increase,

  849. but I

  850. must

  851. decrease.

  852. From

  853. Elizabeth's

  854. wombs,

  855. John is

  856. already doing

  857. this.

  858. Mary shows

  859. up with

  860. the Messiah

  861. in her

  862. womb.

  863. John leaps

  864. for joy,

  865. bearing witness

  866. of the

  867. light.

  868. The Savior

  869. has come.

  870. He wasn't

  871. bearing witness

  872. of his own

  873. miraculous

  874. conception.

  875. He was

  876. bearing witness

  877. of the

  878. miraculous

  879. conception

  880. of the

  881. Lord Jesus

  882. Christ.

  883. John's

  884. purpose was

  885. to point

  886. everyone to

  887. Jesus,

  888. and he was

  889. fulfilling

  890. that purpose

  891. before he

  892. had even

  893. been born.

  894. born.

  895. Now,

  896. what amazing

  897. assurance

  898. this must

  899. have been

  900. for Mary.

  901. At this

  902. point in

  903. Mary's

  904. pregnancy,

  905. it hasn't

  906. been long

  907. enough,

  908. probably,

  909. hasn't been

  910. long enough

  911. for her to

  912. even experience

  913. the nausea

  914. and the

  915. sickness that

  916. comes along

  917. with being

  918. pregnant.

  919. She made

  920. great haste

  921. to get to

  922. Elizabeth after

  923. this angel

  924. appeared.

  925. This may be

  926. within a

  927. week of

  928. Gabriel's

  929. appearance to

  930. her.

  931. She may be

  932. still wondering

  933. with doubts

  934. in her mind,

  935. is this really

  936. true, or am I

  937. just going crazy

  938. right now?

  939. And then when

  940. she shows up

  941. and she finds

  942. Elizabeth, she

  943. sees that the

  944. work that God

  945. is doing in

  946. Elizabeth has a

  947. way of producing

  948. assurance,

  949. for the work

  950. that God is

  951. doing in her

  952. own heart and

  953. in her own

  954. life.

  955. And isn't this

  956. the blessing of

  957. what God does

  958. for us?

  959. He brings us

  960. together in

  961. gospel companionship

  962. and then what we

  963. find is just in

  964. the moments of

  965. our lives where

  966. we're really

  967. beginning to

  968. doubt, we're

  969. really beginning

  970. to wonder, is

  971. this really all

  972. true?

  973. Can I really

  974. trust and take

  975. God at His

  976. word in this

  977. way?

  978. And then we

  979. get along with

  980. another believer

  981. and we listen to

  982. how God is using

  983. their life and

  984. the Lord uses

  985. that to

  986. encourage our

  987. own hearts, to

  988. strengthen our

  989. own faith.

  990. And of course,

  991. that's exactly

  992. what is happening

  993. with Mary.

  994. But it's not just

  995. John's prophecy,

  996. it's Elizabeth's

  997. prophecy as well.

  998. Look at verse

  999. 42.

  1000. Elizabeth was

  1001. filled with the

  1002. Holy Spirit and

  1003. she exclaimed with

  1004. a loud cry,

  1005. blessed are you

  1006. among women,

  1007. blessed is the

  1008. fruit of your

  1009. womb.

  1010. And why is this

  1011. granted to me?

  1012. that the mother

  1013. of my Lord

  1014. should come to

  1015. me?

  1016. Before Mary even

  1017. had a chance to

  1018. explain what was

  1019. happening, the

  1020. Spirit of God

  1021. causes Elizabeth

  1022. to speak as if

  1023. she already knew

  1024. it all.

  1025. Notice what she

  1026. says.

  1027. She reiterated

  1028. Mary's blessedness.

  1029. That's what the

  1030. angel had told

  1031. Mary.

  1032. She acknowledged

  1033. her pregnancy.

  1034. She even

  1035. understood the

  1036. child to be

  1037. the Messiah.

  1038. Listen to her

  1039. words.

  1040. Why is this

  1041. granted to me

  1042. that the

  1043. mother of my

  1044. Lord should

  1045. come to me?

  1046. Surely this

  1047. exhilarated

  1048. Mary's heart.

  1049. Surely this

  1050. began to dispel

  1051. doubts that

  1052. were in her

  1053. mind that maybe

  1054. have crept into

  1055. her mind as she

  1056. traveled to

  1057. Judea.

  1058. And I think

  1059. what Mary

  1060. experiences here

  1061. with Elizabeth

  1062. is how God

  1063. intends for us

  1064. to help one

  1065. another.

  1066. We all

  1067. demonstrate our

  1068. faith in

  1069. Christ as

  1070. individuals, but

  1071. it is a

  1072. wonderful

  1073. encouragement to

  1074. gather with

  1075. Christians to

  1076. hear and see

  1077. how God is

  1078. working.

  1079. We have all

  1080. of these one

  1081. another commands

  1082. in the Bible.

  1083. We have these

  1084. moments where

  1085. the Lord uses

  1086. people to

  1087. confirm God's

  1088. work on our

  1089. lives.

  1090. Have you ever

  1091. experienced that

  1092. before?

  1093. We talked about

  1094. it in our

  1095. anniversary service

  1096. just a couple

  1097. of weeks ago.

  1098. One of the

  1099. things that is

  1100. so helpful to

  1101. me on the

  1102. days when I'm

  1103. really struggling

  1104. or the days when

  1105. I'm doubting or

  1106. wondering, did we

  1107. do this whole

  1108. church plant thing

  1109. just because Jared

  1110. wanted to be the

  1111. boss or was

  1112. tired of listening

  1113. to Jonathan or

  1114. just wanted to do

  1115. his own thing or

  1116. just needed a

  1117. change in his

  1118. life?

  1119. And then I can

  1120. go back to that

  1121. box of letters

  1122. that I have in

  1123. my office and I

  1124. can begin to read

  1125. those letters and

  1126. it just is a

  1127. helpful reminder to

  1128. me that yes, the

  1129. Lord was doing a

  1130. work in my life

  1131. in that process,

  1132. but there is an

  1133. amazing comfort that

  1134. comes from knowing

  1135. that that work was

  1136. affirmed by other

  1137. believers, that God

  1138. was doing his work

  1139. in me through others.

  1140. That's what's

  1141. happening for Mary.

  1142. I think he desires

  1143. for that to happen

  1144. with us.

  1145. Look at verse 45.

  1146. Verse 45.

  1147. Blessed is she who

  1148. believed that there

  1149. would be a

  1150. fulfillment of what

  1151. was spoken to her

  1152. from the Lord.

  1153. I love that all

  1154. these kids are in

  1155. here this morning and

  1156. I don't want them to

  1157. go away.

1158. And this point is for

  1159. these children because

1160. I want you to think

  1161. about what's happening

  1162. here.

  1163. This final portion of

  1164. Elizabeth's prophecy

  1165. is a formal

  1166. beatitude.

  1167. It's a beatitude

  1168. that's recognizing

  1169. Mary's faith.

  1170. Now this would have

  1171. had incredible

  1172. significance to

  1173. Elizabeth and to

  1174. Zechariah because

  1175. Zechariah did not

  1176. initially believe the

  1177. word of God.

  1178. In fact, he spends

  1179. the duration of

  1180. Elizabeth's pregnancy

  1181. mute.

  1182. God took his voice

  1183. away because he

  1184. doubted the message

  1185. of the angel.

  1186. He didn't believe the

  1187. word of the Lord.

  1188. And it was only

  1189. after John's birth

  1190. that he gets that

  1191. back.

1192. This would have been a

  1193. significant statement

1194. that as this man who

  1195. has spent his whole

  1196. life, a godly man,

  1197. that's what Luke says

  1198. in chapter 1, he's

  1199. godly, he's righteous,

  1200. he spent his life

  1201. serving the Lord in

  1202. the temple as a

  1203. Levite, doing everything

1204. that God had asked him

  1205. to do, trusting the

  1206. promises of God.

1207. But in this moment and

  1208. in this circumstance,

  1209. it was 12 and 13

  1210. year old Mary that

  1211. actually was the one

  1212. that believed the

  1213. word of God, not

  1214. Zechariah.

  1215. The statement is a

  1216. reminder that God is

  1217. pleased to bless those

1218. who take him at his

  1219. word rather than those

  1220. who attempt to earn

  1221. his favor.

  1222. Hebrews 11, without

  1223. faith it's impossible

  1224. to please him.

  1225. For whoever would draw

1226. near to God must believe

1227. that he exists and that

  1228. he rewards those who

  1229. seek him.

  1230. But it's also a

  1231. reminder that age and

  1232. experience are not

  1233. prerequisites for

  1234. profound faith.

1235. In fact, in our fallen

  1236. state, age and

  1237. experience can actually

  1238. become giant obstacles

  1239. to faith.

1240. The longer we exist in

  1241. this flesh, the greater

  1242. our propensity for

  1243. self-reliance, self-

  1244. assurance, self-

  1245. guidance.

1246. This is the reason that

  1247. Jesus said that if

1248. you're going to be his

  1249. disciple, you must come

1250. to him like a child,

  1251. trusting entirely in him

  1252. for salvation, trusting

  1253. entirely in him for

  1254. safety and security,

1255. that his purposes will be

1256. fulfilled in us in just

  1257. the way that God

  1258. intends.

1259. And to insist that age

  1260. and experience is

  1261. necessary for genuine

1262. faith is to deny the

  1263. reality of Mary's

  1264. trusting God here.

  1265. Now, I recognize she

  1266. wasn't a toddler, and

1267. I'm not trying to draw

  1268. that particular

  1269. parallel.

  1270. I'm just saying that

  1271. it's pretty remarkable

  1272. that a young teenager

  1273. would demonstrate such

  1274. genuine faith.

  1275. No, she hasn't had

  1276. enough experience in

1277. her life to really be

  1278. tested with whatever the

  1279. systems of the world

  1280. were.

  1281. She didn't understand

1282. how to argue all the

  1283. things that maybe she

1284. would need to argue as

1285. she becomes an adult and

  1286. grows deeper in her

  1287. theological perspectives.

  1288. She wasn't there yet,

1289. but she still had a

  1290. genuine faith, a

  1291. genuine faith that the

  1292. Bible then says was

  1293. blessed of the Lord.

  1294. It was genuine.

  1295. It was authentic.

  1296. It was not complete.

  1297. It was not thorough.

  1298. But it was real.

1299. And I think we need to

  1300. remember that with our

  1301. children.

1302. At this age, they cannot

  1303. understand all the things

  1304. that they need to

  1305. understand.

  1306. They can't argue positions

1307. in the way that they'll

1308. have to argue positions as

  1309. they grow older.

1310. But they don't need to go

  1311. through the greatest

1312. doubts of their life to

1313. know that their faith is

1314. real or to even be able

1315. to have a real faith.

  1316. That's not the teaching

  1317. of the Bible.

1318. They don't have to wait

1319. to go through the worst

  1320. experiences in life to

1321. know whether or not this

1322. is all real and whether

  1323. it's true and whether

  1324. they're going to believe

  1325. it.

  1326. It's actually the opposite.

  1327. They need to establish

  1328. this now.

  1329. Kent Hughes said the

  1330. church must never make

  1331. the mistake of minimizing

  1332. or patronizing its youth.

  1333. Children must be taken

  1334. seriously.

  1335. Teenagers must be

  1336. intelligently challenged.

  1337. The church must invest

  1338. deeply in the spiritual

  1339. nurture and discipling

  1340. of its young.

  1341. That's something we need

1342. to lay as a foundation

  1343. now as a people.

1344. All of these kids are

  1345. going to be teenagers

  1346. before long.

  1347. Chelsea and Ashlyn and

  1348. Clementine are on the

  1349. cusp of it already.

1350. And if they can go and

  1351. sit through a calculus

  1352. class in high school,

1353. surely we can do better

1354. than God told Noah to

  1355. build and Arky, Arky,

1356. or whatever the songs are

  1357. that sometimes we sing,

1358. it needs to take them

  1359. serious.

1360. This thing goes for the

  1361. home.

  1362. Mary's faith was likely

  1363. the product of faithful

  1364. parents who are committed

  1365. to raising their children

  1366. in the nurture and

  1367. admonition of the Lord.

  1368. And Elizabeth is right.

1369. The one who believes the

1370. word of God will be

  1371. blessed by God.

1372. And we all know how

  1373. strong the temptation to

1374. doubt the Lord grows as we

  1375. age.

1376. So we need to commit to

  1377. taking seriously the

  1378. discipling of our

  1379. children.

1380. And then we need to go to

1381. them and we need to learn

  1382. from them because there's a

1383. lot we can learn from Mary,

1384. a child, in this passage.

  1385. Gospel companionship,

  1386. prophetic assurances,

  1387. finally we'll be finished,

  1388. word-based worship.

  1389. Word-based worship.

  1390. These final verses,

  1391. verses 46 to 55,

  1392. they record what many

1393. refer to as the very first

  1394. Christmas song.

1395. We know for sure that its

1396. contents composed one of the

  1397. earliest Christian hymns.

  1398. It's called the

  1399. Magnificent.

1400. Perhaps the title given to

1401. the paragraph in your Bible

1402. maybe even says that, the

  1403. Magnificent.

1404. That term comes from the

  1405. Latin translation of the

1406. very first phrase, my soul

  1407. magnifies the Lord.

1408. And like with all things

1409. related to the Virgin Mary,

1410. it's been misused by the

  1411. Roman Catholic tradition.

1412. But we shouldn't let the

1413. abuse of one group rob the

1414. rest of us of its

  1415. significance in Christian

  1416. prayer and worship.

1417. In fact, we do have a

1418. tendency to do that from

1419. time to time, don't we?

  1420. We understand as

  1421. Protestants that there is

  1422. something vastly different,

  1423. necessarily different between

1424. us and Roman Catholicism and

  1425. some of the Orthodox

  1426. churches as well.

1427. But we need to be careful

1428. that we don't rob ourselves

  1429. of genuine, helpful,

  1430. uplifting tradition just

1431. because it also is utilized in

1432. some fashion in these other

  1433. churches.

1434. The Magnificent is one of

  1435. those things.

1436. We need to learn from it.

1437. We need to examine it.

1438. We could spend weeks really

  1439. examining it.

1440. We're not going to do that.

1441. In fact, I'm not even going

  1442. to read it.

1443. I'm going to let you read it

  1444. again.

1445. We've read it once already.

1446. I'll let you read it on

  1447. your own time.

1448. I just want to kind of do

1449. a flyover of it as it

  1450. connects to the larger

  1451. context of this passage.

  1452. Okay?

  1453. Martin Luther said,

1454. At home in my own house,

1455. there is no warmth or

  1456. vigor in me.

1457. But in the church, when the

  1458. multitude is gathered

  1459. together, a fire is

1460. kindled in my heart and it

  1461. breaks its way through.

  1462. Now, I'm certain that

  1463. Luther had magnificent

  1464. moments of private worship

  1465. during his life.

1466. There is no doubt about

  1467. that.

1468. But his experience here and

1469. what he says is actually

1470. generally true for all of

  1471. us.

  1472. If you've ever attended a

  1473. professional sporting event,

1474. if you're into that kind of

  1475. thing, there is a

  1476. difference between the way

1477. that I cheer for the New

1478. York Yankees in my living

1479. room by myself or with

  1480. Julie, who doesn't care

1481. about it, versus when I'm

  1482. actually in Yankee

  1483. Stadium in the South

  1484. Bronx and there's 55,000

  1485. people who have gathered

  1486. around me.

1487. And I got to be, several

1488. years ago, I was with my

1489. brother and a friend, Ken

  1490. Baker.

1491. We went and it just

  1492. happened to be Bernie

  1493. Williams night.

  1494. They were retiring this

1495. stuff and putting them in

  1496. Monument Park.

1497. It was Derek Jeter's first

  1498. night back to Yankee

  1499. Stadium since he retired.

  1500. And I've never heard a

1501. play so loud in my life.

  1502. The game hasn't even

  1503. started yet.

1504. And we're sitting in the

1505. stands and the place is

  1506. deafeningly loud only

  1507. because Derek Jeter is

  1508. there.

  1509. Now, there's a

  1510. commonality in what's

  1511. happening between all

  1512. those people.

  1513. They're all there because

  1514. they love the Yankees.

  1515. And when they're together,

1516. there is a difference in

1517. the way that they cheer

1518. than if I had been sitting

1519. in my living room and

  1520. watching these pregame

  1521. rituals unfold.

1522. You know what this is

  1523. like.

1524. Our worship can be like

  1525. this sometimes.

  1526. There are unique moments

1527. that we have in private

1528. worship where the Lord is

1529. working in us and we are

  1530. blessed beyond measure.

1531. But there is a difference

1532. between doing that in our

1533. living rooms alone and when

1534. we come together as God's

1535. people and we sing his

  1536. praise together and we

  1537. reflect on his word

  1538. together.

  1539. That's what Luther's

  1540. getting at.

1541. That is a part of what I

1542. think is happening here for

  1543. Mary.

  1544. She's not alone now.

  1545. She's gone to Elizabeth.

  1546. Elizabeth has done this

1547. work and explained this work

1548. of God and it's uplifted her

  1549. heart.

  1550. It's encouraged her.

1551. She has this assurance and

1552. what that then produces in

1553. Mary is this dynamic worship.

1554. Now when you bring together a

  1555. group of individuals whose

1556. unity is based on the union

1557. that they find in Christ and

1558. then you add to that that God's

1559. spirit indwells each and every

1560. one of them in a powerful way,

1561. we should expect nothing less

1562. than passionate worship that is

1563. so reflected in Mary's prayer.

1564. Every Sunday when we come

1565. together, when we sing our

1566. songs, when we read the words,

1567. when we pray together, it

1568. should have the passion and the

1569. vigor because we have exactly

  1570. what Mary had.

  1571. We have companionship.

  1572. We have assurances.

1573. We have the spirit of God in

1574. our lives and that should be

1575. reflected in the way that we

  1576. worship.

1577. But the thing I want to point

1578. out and I want you to notice

1579. about Mary's worship before we

1580. finish is that it's all based on

  1581. the scriptures.

1582. It was the Bible that shaped

1583. her heart and informed her

  1584. worship.

1585. It was her dual sense of use of

1586. soul and spirit that shows her

1587. desire to give her whole self to

1588. God in ways that mirror God's

1589. command to love him with all our

1590. heart and our soul and our mind

  1591. and our strength.

1592. She made a direct allusion to the

1593. prayer of Hannah in 1 Samuel 1,

1594. applying God's word to her own

  1595. experience.

1596. She recognized the mercy of God

1597. for the humble and the judgment

1598. of God against the proud in the

1599. same exact way that the Psalms do.

1600. She praised God for his

1601. faithfulness to the promises given

1602. to Abraham and through the

1603. prophets in the Old Testament.

1604. All of this is what makes up

  1605. Mary's song.

1606. Now critics will use the content

1607. of Mary's prayer to deny its

  1608. authenticity.

1609. They assert that an illiterate

1610. 13-year-old girl from Nazareth would

1611. never be able to praise in such a

1612. way that is so richly theological.

1613. But what they fail to acknowledge is

1614. that every young Israelite knew by

1615. heart the biblical songs of Hannah,

1616. Deborah, of David, these passages

  1617. were memorized.

1618. They were regularly utilized in

1619. Sabbath worship and on the feast

  1620. days.

1621. Kent Hughes again says Mary's mind

1622. was full of scripture and sacred

1623. phraseology from what she heard both

1624. in the synagogue and at home.

1625. So when the Holy Spirit came upon her,

1626. he took what she had and wove it into

  1627. his hallowed tapestry.

  1628. The magnificent, he says,

1629. was a poignant, profound, divine

  1630. human composition.

  1631. It was nothing less.

1632. Mary's prayer models the way that

  1633. every Christian should worship.

1634. The scriptures should shape and

1635. inform our words in private and in

  1636. corporate worship.

1637. The more we know and study them,

1638. the easier it will be to view life in

1639. light of what God has said.

1640. And what could give God more pleasure

1641. than when his people passionately

1642. worship him with his own inerrant,

  1643. infallible, and authoritative words?

  1644. Amazing worship.

  1645. Word-based worship.

1646. Now Mary's visit to Elizabeth is a

1647. beautiful picture of God's grace.

  1648. He unites us together.

  1649. He assures our hearts.

1650. We teach one another through the word

1651. and the result is dynamic worship

1652. as we sing his words back to him.

1653. But the foundation of this community

  1654. is faith in Christ.

1655. Too many people attempt to find the

1656. great joy without the good news.

1657. But they've got that backwards.

1658. You can never experience the everlasting

1659. joy that's promised at Christmas

1660. until you believe in and follow

  1661. the Christ of Christmas.

1662. And when you come to faith in Jesus,

1663. you'll find that his joy is abundant,

1664. that he lavishes it on us in ways

1665. we would never have imagined.

1666. And that includes the glorious grace

1667. that we find in the local church.

  1668. Companionship.

1669. All centered on the gospel.

1670. The good news of great joy.
