  1. Well, Gaius Octavius was born a wealthy and powerful Roman family in 63 BC.

  2. His father was a Roman senator, but more importantly, his uncle was the great Roman general turned dictator.

  3. His name was Julius Caesar.

  4. When a few conspirators, particularly some close friends of Julius Caesar, Brutus and Cassius, assassinated him in 44 BC,

  5. it was discovered that he had secretly adopted Octavius, Gaius Octavius,

  6. which made Octavius the legal heir to Julius Caesar and put him in a position of potentially gaining tremendous power over Rome.

  7. It was then that he took the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, which we just use in English.

  8. We shorten it to Octavian.

  9. From there, a political drama unfolds, particularly between Octavius and another senator in Rome named Mark Antony.

  10. Antony was married to Octavian's sister, but decided to divorce her in order to pursue an adulterous affair with a woman by the name of Cleopatra,

  11. who was the queen of Egypt.

  12. This was the final straw for Octavian, which led to a war between he and Antony,

  13. which led to the defeat, I believe, at Actium of Antony and Cleopatra, who ultimately committed suicide in 31 BC.

  14. Then, through a series of shrewd political maneuvers, Octavian became the first and perhaps the most important emperor of the Roman Empire.

  15. At this point in Roman history, it's at this point that really the republic that it had become known for was really dead at this point.

  16. With Octavian, we see the birth of the Roman Empire, and he becomes really the first emperor of that empire.

  17. Now, his reign brought incredible prosperity to the expanse of the empire.

  18. Under his leadership, Rome excelled significantly, made significant strides economically.

  19. They made significant strides agriculturally.

  20. They made significant strides in the arts.

  21. He contributed to the incredible road system that connected all of the world together, seemingly.

  22. And he's responsible for ushering in the Pax Romana, which we call the Roman Peace.

  23. And recognizing his contributions, the Senate conferred upon Octavian the premier title of Caesar Augustus.

  24. Augustus, meaning holy or reverend, up until that point had been reserved in Roman culture only for the gods.

  25. People considered Octavian to be a savior.

  26. One ancient inscription actually writes that Octavian was the savior of the whole world.

  27. One historian wrote that when Augustus died in A.D. 14, the people, quote, comforted themselves,

  28. reflecting that Augustus was a god and that gods do not truly die.

  29. But while much of the world was lauding who they thought was a god and savior in Rome,

  30. something much more glorious than they could ever imagine was taking place in this little town of Bethlehem in Judea.

  31. It says Kent Hughes, the baby Mary carried, was not a Caesar.

  32. He was not a Caesar who was a man who would become a god, but a far greater wonder, the true god who had become a man.

  33. That's the story that begins to unfold here in Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  34. Though his conception was a miracle unlike any other, there was nothing extraordinary about Jesus' actual birth.

  35. In fact, we can read through these first seven verses and really there's nothing remarkable about them.

  36. It's actually quite ordinary.

  37. The circumstances aren't necessarily ordinary, but the way things began to unfold, at least at this point, is really quite ordinary.

  38. In fact, that's kind of what's most noteworthy about it is how unremarkable it actually was.

  39. We'd be hard-pressed to think of a more difficult and demeaning circumstance in which to give birth to a child.

  40. Rather than in a palace surrounded by all the comforts possible,

  41. the Son of God was born amidst the filth of animals.

  42. Indeed, the contrast between Augustus in Rome and Jesus in Bethlehem couldn't be greater.

  43. In Rome was a self-proclaimed God that valued glory and power above all else.

  44. Jesus, however, willingly set aside the glory of heaven's throne

  45. to become a man in order to save men from their sins.

  46. It's a very different picture that we see between the two.

  47. Luke rooted his record of Jesus' birth year in a historical reality

  48. and also emphasized its prophetic significance.

  49. We're going to talk about all of those things this morning.

  50. But of course, his purpose in all of this was not to give us a unique tale to ponder

  51. or to pass on to our children during the Christmas season.

  52. His purpose was to give us certainty that Jesus of Nazareth is indeed the Son of God

  53. and the true Savior of the world.

  54. The point that Luke is getting across here is not to entertain us with a tale.

  55. His point and his purpose here is to persuade us to believe.

  56. He is giving us the good news of great joy,

  57. as we've been calling it over these last few weeks.

  58. Three simple things I want to point out about these seven verses.

  59. The first thing I want to point out to you is that Christ's birth is fixed in history.

  60. Christ's birth is fixed in history.

  61. Look at the first three verses with me again.

  62. In those days, a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.

  63. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria

  64. and all went to be registered, each to his own town.

  65. Ever since the birth of Jesus, there have been efforts to deny the historic reliability of this nativity story.

  66. In fact, the people involved in these events were convinced.

  67. Of course they were.

  68. How could they not be convinced?

  69. But no one else seemed to believe them.

  70. Have you ever thought it unusual that with all of the extravagance that went into the angels appearing to

  71. Zechariah and Elizabeth and then to Mary and Joseph and then the circumstances that lead Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem

  72. and then the angels appearing to the shepherds and then the magi that traveled from so far.

  73. All of these extravagant things happening with the birth of Jesus.

  74. Have you ever thought it unusual that no one else seemed to talk about it?

  75. With something so grand, something so awesome, how was this not the talk of the town in Bethlehem?

  76. How was this not the talk of the town in Israel and in Judea at this point?

  77. And the simple answer to that must be that though the people involved in the story were convinced of the truthfulness of it,

  78. no one else really was.

  79. I mean, who of us would believe this story?

  80. No one had an iPhone in that day to video the angel when he comes and delivers the message.

  81. There was, there's no way to just stop and say, hey, let me get a selfie with you, Gabriel, here before you head back to heaven.

  82. There's no way for them to provide evidence, right?

  83. It's just stories.

  84. And it probably wasn't until the growth of Jesus' popularity as a healer and as a teacher later on

  85. that anyone really began to consider the old stories of angels and shepherds and magi and of virgin birth.

  86. Several years ago, an atheist organization ran a series of Christmas billboards in New York City

  87. to promote their particular denial.

  88. I wish I would have put a picture of it on the screen for you to see.

  89. If you want to see it, I'll show it to you after a service.

  90. But basically, the way the billboard was, it was huge.

  91. It was throughout the city.

  92. And on the top was a picture of Santa Claus.

  93. And it said, keep the Mary, keep the Mary, M-E-R-R-Y, keep the Mary with Santa Claus.

  94. And then just below that picture was a picture of Jesus on a cross.

  95. And it said, dump the myth.

  96. So here, this was 2014, I think, or 2013.

  97. Here is all of these billboards throughout the city promoting this idea that all of this stuff

  98. about this nativity story, it's all mythological.

  99. There is nothing historical about it.

  100. It's not real.

  101. And of course, people have said that for quite some time.

  102. But really, to assert that the biblical narrative is mythological is actually intellectually dishonest.

  103. You don't have to come to the same conclusions that we would as believers

  104. about why this was happening and exactly the extent that it happened.

  105. But to deny the historical reliability of it is actually irresponsible.

  106. Even secular historians, both ancient and modern,

  107. though they may not arrive at those same conclusions,

  108. recognize the historical reliability of the New Testament documents.

  109. Tacitus, the Roman from the first century.

  110. Later on, Josephus, the Jewish historian,

  111. all recognized the historical validity of Jesus' life

  112. and the things that his disciples were teaching,

  113. things that they truly believed were true about his life,

  114. including his birth and his death and his resurrection.

  115. And then we move on through history and we see,

  116. even those who would not come to the same conclusions as us,

  117. about faith in Christ acknowledge that these documents are historically reliable,

  118. at least Luke really believed that this was true.

  119. And Luke wrote a historical document.

  120. C.S. Lewis, who lived a lot of his life as an atheist,

  121. later in reflecting after his conversion,

  122. wrote,

  123. I have been reading poems,

  124. romances,

  125. vision literature,

  126. legends and myths,

  127. all my life.

  128. I know what they are like.

  129. I know none of them are like this,

  130. he says.

  131. And he's right.

  132. Some of you enjoy to read fantasy and fiction

  133. and things like that.

  134. You know this is not that.

  135. This does not read like that.

  136. It's not intended to be like that.

  137. Leading off in verse 1 with,

  138. in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus.

  139. That's quite a different approach than a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

  140. That is not the same thing.

  141. It's not the same intention.

  142. It's not the same type of writing.

  143. In fact, Luke was a Greek doctor.

  144. He's a companion of the Apostle Paul,

  145. who was particularly thorough in his writings.

  146. Flip back just to chapter 1 here.

  147. Look at the first four verses of the book.

  148. Luke describes what he's actually trying to accomplish in writing this gospel.

  149. He says,

  150. Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative

  151. of the things that have been accomplished among us,

  152. just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses

  153. and ministers of the word have delivered them to us,

  154. it seemed good to me also,

  155. having followed all things closely for some time past,

  156. to write an orderly account for you,

  157. most excellent Theophilus,

  158. that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.

  159. Well, it's Luke's method here.

  160. Well, his method involved interviewing eyewitnesses, he says,

  161. in order that he might provide an orderly account,

  162. sounds like a doctor to me,

  163. provide an orderly account,

  164. that gives historical certainty, he says,

  165. concerning the things of Christ.

  166. That's his goal.

  167. That's his aim here.

  168. He's not writing fiction.

  169. He's trying to persuade.

  170. By acknowledging Caesar Augustus,

  171. Quirinius,

  172. the census,

  173. Luke was rooting the narrative of Jesus' birth

  174. in historical reality

  175. with real people

  176. in actual places

  177. at a precise time.

  178. Luke's readers then

  179. can recognize the circumstances

  180. that actually brought Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem,

  181. and they're reasonable circumstances.

  182. There's no angel that lifts them up out of Nazareth

  183. and delivers them to Bethlehem

  184. just in order to try to make the stories fit.

  185. That's not happening here.

  186. Designating an exact census,

  187. I don't know if you've ever considered this,

  188. but designating an exact census,

  189. and there were a few of them

  190. that are listed in the New Testament,

  191. but this particular one

  192. meant there was a house of records somewhere

  193. to where somebody reading this narrative

  194. could go and find documentation

  195. about this particular census,

  196. there being a man from Nazareth named Joseph

  197. who came to Bethlehem to register his family,

  198. and here's the details of his family.

  199. Here's his betrothed wife, Mary,

  200. perhaps, depending on when the census actually occurred,

  201. perhaps Jesus would even be listed on that.

  202. There would be historical documentation

  203. for the people originally reading this book.

  204. God had so moved the wills of human history

  205. that Jesus' birth occurred

  206. at precisely the right time

  207. for us to have certainty of its truth.

  208. And Paul reflects on this in Galatians 4, doesn't he?

  209. When the fullness of time had come, he says,

  210. God sent forth his Son,

  211. born of woman, born under the law,

  212. to redeem those who were under the law

  213. so that we might receive adoptions as sons.

  214. When the fullness of time had come,

  215. in other words, at just the right time,

  216. God did this thing.

  217. This was not coincidence.

  218. It didn't just kind of happen this way,

  219. and God decided retroactively

  220. to look back on it and say,

  221. this fits pretty well.

  222. Let's make Jesus the Son of God and Messiah.

  223. No, this was actually all God's plan.

  224. He orchestrated this whole thing.

  225. You don't know why he chose this particular time,

  226. but there's no doubt that he did.

  227. Augustus' rule over Rome

  228. prepared the way for that census

  229. that forced Joseph and Mary to go to Bethlehem,

  230. which is so necessary.

  231. And how assuring it is to believers' hearts

  232. to consider the sovereign power of God

  233. in orchestrating the events of world history

  234. to accomplish his saving purposes.

  235. That brings assurance to me,

  236. because if God was willing to do all of this,

  237. that means that he's not only in control,

  238. but he's working all things together for good

  239. to them who love God

  240. and are the called according to his purpose.

  241. That's what we see.

  242. Marshall Howard said,

  243. the census serves to place the birth of Jesus

  244. in the context of world history

  245. and to show that the fiat of an earthly ruler

  246. can be utilized in the will of God

  247. to bring his more important purposes to fruition.

  248. We hear all kinds of stories that we wish were true,

  249. but we know they must not be true.

  250. The Bible, however, tells the story of salvation,

  251. written with historical certainty and reliability.

  252. It's not a fairy tale or a myth,

  253. meaning it is truly good news that can bring great joy.

  254. And Luke's intention was to remind us of that.

  255. So that's the first thing that we see.

  256. Christ's birth is fixed in history.

  257. It's reliable.

  258. Secondly, Christ's birth is the fulfillment of prophecy.

  259. So once we understand, according to Luke's structure here,

  260. that this is a real occurrence, this really happened,

  261. here's the time frame that it happened,

  262. real people, real places, precise time.

  263. Then we can start to ask the questions,

  264. well, is there any real significance

  265. that would validate Mary's story here?

  266. We know that Jesus was really born.

  267. Records would indicate he was really born in Bethlehem

  268. and all that stuff is true.

  269. But what about the whole son of God,

  270. angels, Messiah kind of thing?

  271. Well, that's when we get to this second part.

  272. It is the fulfillment of prophecy.

  273. Look at verse four.

  274. Joseph also went up from Galilee,

  275. from the town of Nazareth to Judea,

  276. to the city of David,

  277. which is called Bethlehem,

  278. because he was of the house and lineage of David,

  279. to be registered with Mary, his betrothed,

  280. who was with child.

  281. The journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem,

  282. probably 80 to 90 miles,

  283. they would have traveled.

  284. Probably took them close to a week

  285. to accomplish this,

  286. at least in Mary's condition, right?

  287. And there's a lot that we don't actually know about this journey.

  288. There's a lot of gaps that are left wide open for us, isn't there?

  289. We often assume that Mary rode there on a donkey,

  290. but given their financial situation,

  291. there's a real chance that Mary,

  292. at this advanced stage in her pregnancy,

  293. probably had to walk the 80 to 90 miles.

  294. The Bible never says she rode on a donkey.

  295. She could have,

  296. but it doesn't say that.

  297. This is a tough journey for her.

  298. We don't exactly know how she got there.

  299. Could have been that there was a caravan of people

  300. traveling from Galilee down to Jerusalem

  301. and on then to Bethlehem.

  302. Maybe they were able to tag along

  303. and ride along on some type of wagon

  304. or another animal or something like that.

  305. We don't know.

  306. That's just conjecture too.

  307. We don't even know exactly why Mary went with Joseph.

  308. The census wouldn't have required that.

  309. Only the leader of the household

  310. would have been required to go,

  311. most likely,

  312. to the place of their lineage

  313. to actually fulfill the duties of this census.

  314. Mary probably didn't even have to go.

  315. So we're not exactly sure why she did.

  316. And of course,

  317. common sense would tell us

  318. that Joseph wanted to keep Mary close by.

  319. She's clearly at the very end of her term

  320. as far as her pregnancy is concerned.

  321. We don't know all the stuff

  322. that's going into this journey.

  323. All we know is that they made the journey together.

  324. But we don't need to let the absence of information worry us

  325. because that's not Luke's intention.

  326. He's not trying to tell us

  327. all of the details about the journey.

  328. His intention is to tell us

  329. the reasons why Joseph and Mary

  330. ended up in Bethlehem

  331. because the whole Bethlehem part of this

  332. is so important.

  333. Why were they there?

  334. The significance of these verses

  335. lies in the fact

  336. that they record the fulfillment of prophecies

  337. given by God hundreds of years before.

  338. Two in particular

  339. are directly addressed here in these verses.

  340. The first one

  341. had to do with the Davidic covenant

  342. that this long-awaited Messiah

  343. would come through the house and lineage

  344. of King David.

  345. Matthew's genealogy in Matthew chapter 1

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  346. and then Luke's emphasis here

  347. on Joseph's heritage

  348. serve to show that Jesus' birth

  349. fulfills this prophecy.

  350. So it's not just about the fact that Jesus historically

  351. was born in Bethlehem.

  352. It's also about the fact

  353. that being born in Bethlehem

  354. means that he fits the parameters

  355. of what God said the Messiah would be.

  356. 2 Samuel chapter 7

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  357. this is where God gives his covenant to David.

  358. When your days are fulfilled

  359. and you lie down with your fathers

  360. I will raise up your offspring after you

  361. who shall come from your body

  362. and I will establish his kingdom.

  363. You say well that could be about Solomon.

  364. It could be

  365. but then he goes on

  366. he shall build a house for my name

  367. and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

  368. Remember that doesn't apply to Solomon.

  369. In fact that doesn't apply to anybody else

  370. that came in David's line.

  371. That can apply to one person alone.

  372. That's this Messiah king

  373. that Israel had longed for.

  374. And Israel understood this Davidic covenant

  375. to be a reference to this Messiah king.

  376. And the prophets affirm this.

  377. In Isaiah chapter 11

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  378. there shall come forth a shoot

  379. from the stump of Jesse.

  380. Jesse was David's father.

  381. And a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.

  382. The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him.

  383. The spirit of wisdom and understanding.

  384. The spirit of counsel and might.

  385. The spirit of knowledge

  386. and the fear of the Lord.

  387. And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

  388. Now remember Isaiah is writing these things

  389. long after David and Solomon

  390. and the age of the good kings

  391. that we would say.

  392. Then Jeremiah picks it up.

  393. Jeremiah 23

  394. Behold the days are coming

  395. declares the Lord

  396. when I will raise up for David

  397. a righteous branch

  398. and he shall reign as king

  399. and deal wisely

  400. and shall execute justice

  401. and righteousness in the land.

  402. All of these prophecies

  403. pointing toward a savior

  404. a Messiah king

  405. who would rule

  406. and be from the line of David.

  407. And his rule would be an eternal rule

  408. as the emphasis here.

  409. And so Luke emphasizes this.

  410. He says remember

  411. and he emphasizes it greatly in verse 4.

  412. Remember Joseph is from David's line.

  413. Jesus' adopted father is from David's line.

  414. And so was Mary

  415. as you get to chapter 3

  416. and as you reflect back on Matthew chapter 1.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  417. No matter how you shake it up

  418. Jesus' earthly parents

  419. were of the house

  420. and the lineage of David.

  421. Which means that Jesus himself

  422. comes from the house

  423. and the lineage of King David.

  424. The second prophecy

  425. directly addressed here

  426. has to do with the place

  427. where this Messiah would be born.

  428. And of course this is where Micah comes in.

  429. Clementine maybe you'll remember this verse.

  430. I think you quoted it last year

  431. didn't you?

  432. But you O Bethlehem Ephrathah

  433. who are too little

  434. to be among the clans of Judah

  435. from you shall come forth

  436. for me one who is to be ruler in Israel

  437. whose coming forth is from old

  438. from ancient of days.

  439. There's a significance to this.

  440. There's a significance to this place.

  441. Now the birth of Jesus

  442. fulfills both of those prophecies

  443. and more.

  444. The prophetic significance

  445. of Jesus' birth

  446. is about so much more

  447. than the virgin conception.

  448. That's a vital piece of it

  449. but it's only a piece.

  450. Now I want you to consider now

  451. in the prophetic fulfillments

  452. all the things that had to have been fulfilled

  453. in order for Jesus

  454. to truly be this Messiah.

  455. Remember if only one prophecy

  456. is left unfulfilled

  457. it would be impossible

  458. for Jesus to be our Savior.

  459. Without the virgin birth

  460. Jesus is not the Son of God.

  461. Have to have the virgin birth piece.

  462. If Mary had remained in Nazareth

  463. rather than choosing to go on the journey

  464. with Joseph to Bethlehem

  465. if Jesus had been born in Nazareth

  466. he could not have been the one

  467. who was to come.

  468. Without the ministry of John the Baptist

  469. as the forerunner of the Christ

  470. Jesus could not have been the Messiah.

  471. Even if the rest of Jesus' life

  472. happened exactly as it's recorded

  473. in the scriptures

  474. but only one of these prophecies

  475. falls short.

  476. Jesus could not have possibly

  477. been the Messiah

  478. and the Savior

  479. and the ruler

  480. and the king.

  481. And we would be left in our sins.

  482. Now if we were to take

  483. all of these prophecies

  484. from the Old Testament

  485. we were to lay them side by side

  486. and we would say

  487. how are we

  488. how are we going to find this

  489. to be true in a person?

  490. We say it's impossible

  491. because this is in God's

  492. divine providence

  493. that this unfolds.

  494. It is in the divine providence

  495. of God

  496. that every single prophecy

  497. of this Savior king

  498. was fulfilled

  499. precisely

  500. in Jesus of Nazareth

  501. down to the minutest

  502. detail

  503. of the place

  504. of his birth.

  505. All of it.

  506. All of it fulfilled.

  507. It's not been fulfilled

  508. this way

  509. in any other person

  510. ever.

  511. Only one.

  512. And Jesus

  513. perfectly

  514. fits it.

  515. Of course

  516. the ultimate validation

  517. of Jesus' identity

  518. is his resurrection

  519. from the dead.

  520. In fact

  521. the resurrection

  522. changes everything

  523. doesn't it?

  524. In fact

  525. if you're struggling

  526. with doubts

  527. and you're trying

  528. to see how all

  529. these pieces

  530. fit together

  531. perhaps a good method

  532. is to start at the end

  533. and work your way

  534. backwards.

  535. You start with the resurrection

  536. what does that tell us?

  537. Well if Jesus

  538. was able to raise

  539. from the dead

  540. there is something

  541. significant about him

  542. there must be

  543. something divine

  544. about him.

  545. And you start to trace

  546. those things backwards.

  547. The resurrection

  548. validates his crucifixion.

  549. The fact that Jesus

  550. rose from the dead

  551. means that God

  552. the Father

  553. received

  554. his crucifixion

  555. as a sufficient

  556. atonement

  557. for our sins.

  558. It means it worked.

  559. It means the sacrifice

  560. was good.

  561. It was holy.

  562. It was perfect.

  563. It means forgiveness

  564. can actually be achieved.

  565. The resurrection

  566. verifies

  567. Jesus' miracles

  568. were about

  569. so much more

  570. than

  571. bringing goodness

  572. into the world.

  573. It was about

  574. more than that.

  575. It was about

  576. his identity

  577. and who he was.

  578. It was more than

  579. just a gift

  580. for a particular

  581. people at a particular

  582. time.

  583. The resurrection

  584. gives us confidence

  585. in the truthfulness

  586. of the scriptures.

  587. If Jesus

  588. rose from the dead

  589. that means there

  590. must be something

  591. significantly divine

  592. about him

  593. and Jesus said

  594. that the scriptures

  595. were God's word.

  596. So then

  597. surely they must

  598. be God's word.

  599. resurrection

  600. brings

  601. certainty

  602. to the fact

  603. that Jesus' birth

  604. was indeed

  605. the fulfillment

  606. of these

  607. messianic predictions.

  608. It means that

  609. the baby

  610. in Bethlehem

  611. has the power

  612. to forgive sins

  613. and give eternal life

  614. to all who will

  615. believe and follow him.

  616. It's good news

  617. of great joy.

  618. So we see

  619. the birth of Christ

  620. is fixed in history.

  621. It is the fulfillment

  622. of the Old Testament

  623. prophecies,

  624. every one of them

  625. being fulfilled

  626. and proven in him.

  627. Thirdly and finally,

  628. Christ's birth

  629. is characterized

  630. by humility.

  631. It's characterized

  632. by humility.

  633. Look with me

  634. at verse 6.

  635. While they were there,

  636. the time came

  637. for her to give birth.

  638. she gave birth

  639. to her firstborn son

  640. and wrapped him

  641. in swaddling clothes,

  642. laid him in a manger

  643. because there was

  644. no place for them

  645. in the inn.

  646. Now,

  647. this is where

  648. unusual circumstances

  649. come into play.

  650. The birth itself,

  651. there's nothing really

  652. extraordinary about that.

  653. Mary felt

  654. every contraction.

  655. She felt

  656. every pain.

  657. She went through

  658. all the processes

  659. that you women

  660. who have given birth

  661. have gone through.

  662. She went through

  663. all of those things.

  664. There wasn't anything

  665. extraordinary

  666. about that part of it.

  667. But this is an

  668. unusual circumstance.

  669. They've traveled

  670. to Bethlehem.

  671. We don't know

  672. how long

  673. they were in Bethlehem

  674. before the time

  675. came for her

  676. to give birth.

  677. But all the indications

  678. of the passage

  679. say this was fast

  680. and sudden.

  681. They had not even yet

  682. found a place

  683. to settle in

  684. to stay

  685. for however long

  686. it was going to be

  687. necessary for them

  688. to stay.

  689. Accommodations,

  690. from what I understand

  691. in reading,

  692. accommodations

  693. for travelers

  694. in Bethlehem

  695. and in places like it

  696. would have been

  697. quite primitive

  698. especially during

  699. seasons of crowdedness

  700. as this would have been.

  701. The word that's used

  702. for in

  703. is not a typical

  704. Greek word

  705. for a hotel

  706. what would be used

  707. as a hotel

  708. in that sense.

  709. More like a campground

  710. is really the idea

  711. that would match

  712. what we would think

  713. of it as.

  714. From what I've read

  715. the situation

  716. would be something

  717. like an enclosure

  718. that had different

  719. stalls around

  720. the perimeter.

  721. Stalls where

  722. these travelers

  723. would come

  724. and then

  725. whoever owned

  726. the property

  727. or ran the property

  728. whatever it was

  729. would have

  730. in the middle

  731. of these enclosures

  732. had a courtyard

  733. !

  734. A common courtyard

  735. where they would

  736. have the animals

  737. that were necessary

  738. for them to bring

  739. as they traveled.

  740. The responsibility

  741. of what we would say

  742. is an innkeeper

  743. or whoever's running

  744. the deal here

  745. the responsibility

  746. that they had

  747. was to provide

  748. fodder for the animals

  749. and then some type

  750. of fire.

  751. Really that's it.

  752. So when Mary and Joseph

  753. get there

  754. they find that

  755. these stalls are full

  756. there's no stall

  757. that's actually available

  758. to them.

  759. Our decorative

  760. nativity sets

  761. portray a cozy

  762. kind of quaint

  763. even private

  764. stable

  765. but there really

  766. was no such setting

  767. available to this

  768. young teenage couple

  769. who's just made

  770. this 80 or 90

  771. mile journey.

  772. Customary doors

  773. of hospitality

  774. were shut

  775. in their face.

  776. The young virgin

  777. was forced

  778. to give birth

  779. in the middle

  780. of a communal

  781. courtyard

  782. meant for livestock

  783. and you can only

  784. imagine what that

  785. must have been like.

  786. People talk about

  787. all the time

  788. you know

  789. the birth of your child

  790. is something

  791. that you never

  792. forget.

  793. It's entrenched

  794. in your memory

  795. and surely

  796. even for us men

  797. it's entrenched

  798. in our memory

  799. maybe for different

  800. reasons but it's there.

  801. It's one of the most

  802. bizarre experiences

  803. of my life.

  804. A good experience

  805. but bizarre.

  806. And when Julie

  807. gave birth

  808. to our girls

  809. it was in a

  810. comfortable hospital

  811. there was

  812. heat

  813. very high heat.

  814. I don't know

  815. why they cranked

  816. the heat up so high

  817. in those rooms

  818. when this happens

  819. and there's

  820. not just a doctor

  821. or a midwife

  822. there's lots of them.

  823. There's people everywhere

  824. and they're all

  825. coaching you

  826. and there's all

  827. the machinery

  828. and there's all

  829. the stuff

  830. all the stuff

  831. that they have you do.

  832. Mary has none of that.

  833. You can imagine

  834. it's just her

  835. and Joseph.

  836. She's 12

  837. 13

  838. 14 years old.

  839. Joseph

  840. probably wasn't

  841. much older

  842. maybe a little

  843. but probably

  844. not much.

  845. She has no idea

  846. what this experience

  847. is going to be like

  848. except for however

  849. it's been described

  850. to her by other

  851. women in her life.

  852. Perhaps she was there

  853. for John's birth

  854. and was able to

  855. experience at least

  856. in that extent.

  857. And now she's forced

  858. into a not so private

  859. communal courtyard

  860. Filled with animals.

  861. Kent Hughes says

  862. it was wretched

  863. scandalous.

  864. There was sweat

  865. and pain

  866. and blood

  867. and cries

  868. as Mary reached up

  869. to the heavens

  870. for help.

  871. The smell of birth

  872. mixed with

  873. the stench

  874. of manure

  875. and acrid straw

  876. made a contemptible

  877. bouquet.

  878. Trembling

  879. carpenter's hands

  880. clumsy with fear

  881. grasped

  882. God's son.

  883. The baby's

  884. limbs

  885. waving

  886. helplessly

  887. as if falling

  888. through space.

  889. His face

  890. grimacing

  891. as he grasped

  892. in the cold

  893. and his cry

  894. pierced

  895. the night.

  896. There's no

  897. comfort of a mother.

  898. There's no

  899. assistance

  900. from a midwife.

  901. There's no

  902. Clorox wipes

  903. to clean out

  904. the feeding trough

  905. that she had

  906. to lay the baby

  907. in.

  908. Unlike

  909. Caesar Augustus

  910. Jesus was the

  911. king that

  912. everybody needed

  913. but no one

  914. seemed to want.

  915. No one

  916. makes room.

  917. No one

  918. helps them.

  919. The birth

  920. of this

  921. Messiah

  922. could not

  923. have been

  924. more lowly.

  925. It could not

  926. have been

  927. more humble

  928. which of course

  929. is the point

  930. of it all.

  931. That's the

  932. point.

  933. The creator

  934. of the universe

  935. enters our

  936. world

  937. taking true

  938. humanity

  939. with all

  940. of its

  941. brokenness.

  942. He faced

  943. every heartache

  944. every temptation

  945. every struggle

  946. of life

  947. in a sinful

  948. world

  949. but he did

  950. so without

  951. ever sinning

  952. himself.

  953. This makes

  954. him a savior

  955. and a mediator

  956. according to

  957. Hebrews

  958. that is

  959. perfectly able

  960. to sympathize

  961. with our

  962. weaknesses

  963. while maintaining

  964. his power

  965. to rescue

  966. us from

  967. those weaknesses.

  968. King of heaven

  969. now the

  970. friend of

  971. sinners

  972. humble servant

  973. in the

  974. father's hands

  975. filled with

  976. power and

  977. the Holy

  978. Spirit

  979. filled with

  980. mercy

  981. mercy

  982. for the

  983. broken

  984. man.

  985. Yes he

  986. walked my

  987. road

  988. and he

  989. felt my

  990. pain

  991. joys and

  992. sorrows

  993. that I

  994. know so

  995. well

  996. yet his

  997. righteous

  998. steps

  999. give me

  1000. hope

  1001. again

  1002. I will

  1003. follow

  1004. my

  1005. Emmanuel.

  1006. That's the

  1007. whole point

  1008. of the

  1009. thing.

  1010. It was

  1011. his divine

  1012. love

  1013. and desire

  1014. to save

  1015. sinners

  1016. that led

  1017. Jesus to

  1018. so willingly

  1019. humble

  1020. himself

  1021. in this

  1022. way.

  1023. But the

  1024. surest sign

  1025. of his

  1026. humility

  1027. wasn't his

  1028. birth in

  1029. Bethlehem

  1030. it was his

  1031. death in

  1032. Jerusalem.

  1033. Philippians 2

  1034. you know the

  1035. passage well

  1036. have this

  1037. mind among

  1038. yourselves

  1039. which is

  1040. yours in

  1041. Christ Jesus

  1042. who though

  1043. he was in

  1044. the form

  1045. of God

  1046. did not

  1047. count

  1048. equality

  1049. with God

  1050. a thing

  1051. to be

  1052. grasped

  1053. but emptied

  1054. himself

  1055. and taking

  1056. the form

  1057. of a

  1058. servant

  1059. being born

  1060. in the

  1061. likeness

  1062. of men

  1063. and being

  1064. found in

  1065. human form

  1066. he humbled

  1067. himself

  1068. by becoming

  1069. obedient to

  1070. the point

  1071. of death

  1072. even death

  1073. on a cross.

  1074. You see

  1075. this

  1076. characterization

  1077. of humility

  1078. the humble

  1079. nature of

  1080. the Messiah

  1081. is the

  1082. entire

  1083. point

  1084. that the

  1085. God of

  1086. heaven

  1087. endured

  1088. so much

  1089. out of

  1090. his love

  1091. for man

  1092. out of

  1093. his desire

  1094. to save

  1095. us

  1096. the pinnacle

  1097. of that

  1098. humility

  1099. being

  1100. a criminal's

  1101. death

  1102. the perfect

  1103. son of

  1104. God

  1105. nailed to

  1106. a cross

  1107. by the

  1108. people he

  1109. came to

  1110. save

  1111. Luke's

  1112. telling of

  1113. the birth

  1114. of

  1115. Jesus

  1116. is intended

  1117. to give

  1118. us

  1119. certainty

  1120. that God

  1121. has provided

  1122. salvation

  1123. through him

  1124. we get

  1125. the certainty

  1126. through the

  1127. historical

  1128. existence

  1129. of Christ

  1130. we see

  1131. the prophetic

  1132. fulfillment

  1133. we see

  1134. his divine

  1135. humility

  1136. but God

  1137. doesn't

  1138. desire

  1139. for us

  1140. to gain

  1141. mere

  1142. intellectual

  1143. certainty

  1144. there's a

  1145. difference

  1146. here

  1147. we can

  1148. sit down

  1149. with our

  1150. neighbor

  1151. and we

  1152. can go

  1153. through

  1154. the notes

  1155. that I've

  1156. given you

  1157. today

  1158. and you

  1159. can

  1160. highlight

  1161. all the

  1162. things

  1163. and you

  1164. can win

  1165. them

  1166. intellectually

  1167. maybe

  1168. to your

  1169. perspective

  1170. but

  1171. intellectual

  1172. agreement

  1173. with the

  1174. facts

  1175. is not

  1176. the same

  1177. thing

  1178. as saving

  1179. faith in

  1180. Christ

  1181. as Lord

  1182. and Savior

  1183. he doesn't

  1184. call us

  1185. simply to

  1186. agree with

  1187. the facts

  1188. he calls

  1189. us

  1190. invites

  1191. us

  1192. to repent

  1193. of sin

  1194. and trusting

  1195. Christ alone

  1196. as the only

  1197. means of

  1198. reconciliation

  1199. with God

  1200. you see

  1201. that's where

  1202. people get

  1203. tripped up

  1204. they're not

  1205. so opposed

  1206. to the

  1207. things of

  1208. Jesus

  1209. as far as

  1210. the stories

  1211. are concerned

  1212. and even

  1213. in our

  1214. particular age

  1215. they're fine

  1216. to listen

  1217. Amy mentioned

  1218. last Sunday

  1219. night

  1220. at our

  1221. fellowship

  1222. co-workers

  1223. even that she

  1224. has

  1225. who are

  1226. introducing

  1227. their kids

  1228. to Christianity

  1229. at Christmas

  1230. not because

  1231. they're

  1232. Christian

  1233. but because

  1234. they just

  1235. want them

  1236. to have

  1237. a well-rounded

  1238. understanding

  1239. of religions

  1240. and cultures

  1241. and things

  1242. like that

  1243. it's a whole

  1244. different thing

  1245. those kids

  1246. can go through

  1247. and learn

  1248. all the facts

  1249. and give

  1250. assent

  1251. to all

  1252. the facts

  1253. and still

  1254. go to hell

  1255. because it's

  1256. not about

  1257. giving intellectual

  1258. assent

  1259. to the facts

  1260. it's about

  1261. coming to a

  1262. place where

  1263. you see

  1264. the exclusivity

  1265. of Christ

  1266. Christ alone

  1267. brings salvation

  1268. Christ alone

  1269. can save me

  1270. from my sins

  1271. Christ alone

  1272. reconciles me

  1273. to the Father

  1274. so Luke writes

  1275. this not just

  1276. to say

  1277. here's the stuff

  1278. here's the facts

  1279. he gives the facts

  1280. in order that

  1281. he can say

  1282. now believe

  1283. believe

  1284. and follow Christ

  1285. believe

  1286. turn

  1287. from your sin

  1288. because the message

  1289. is good news

  1290. it's gospel news

  1291. but it's only good

  1292. if it's received

  1293. by faith

  1294. that's the only

  1295. way it brings

  1296. great joy

  1297. and you say

  1298. well what are we

  1299. what is it

  1300. exactly

  1301. what we're

  1302. supposed to do

  1303. with this

  1304. with these

  1305. things

  1306. and well

  1307. it depends

  1308. on who you

  1309. are

  1310. if you're

  1311. a believer

  1312. be confident

  1313. in the truth

  1314. of the Bible

  1315. it's

  1316. sometimes we

  1317. get this idea

  1318. that the things

  1319. that God

  1320. has given us

  1321. in the word

  1322. are just kind

  1323. of like

  1324. barely hanging

  1325. on by a thread

  1326. that if

  1327. one atheist

  1328. just pulls

  1329. just the right

  1330. thread

  1331. it's all

  1332. going to

  1333. fall apart

  1334. and you

  1335. need to

  1336. remember

  1337. that for

  1338. thousands

  1339. of years

  1340. now

  1341. they've been

  1342. trying to

  1343. pull those

  1344. threads

  1345. and the

  1346. Bible

  1347. has stood

  1348. the test

  1349. of time

  1350. it cannot

  1351. be defeated

  1352. your greatest

  1353. doubts

  1354. will not be

  1355. able to

  1356. defeat the

  1357. truth of

  1358. God's word

  1359. and when you

  1360. come to a

  1361. passage like

  1362. this you

  1363. can use

  1364. logic

  1365. and the

  1366. reason

  1367. that God

  1368. has given

  1369. you

  1370. to develop

  1371. the confidence

  1372. necessary

  1373. in the truth

  1374. of the Bible

  1375. and then

  1376. the confidence

  1377. of those

  1378. factual things

  1379. produces

  1380. worship

  1381. that's what

  1382. these Christmas

  1383. services are

  1384. about

  1385. that's what

  1386. that nativity

  1387. set on your

  1388. counter is

  1389. about

  1390. it's to bring

  1391. you to a

  1392. place of

  1393. worship

  1394. if you're a

  1395. believer

  1396. that's your

  1397. response

  1398. have confidence

  1399. in the truth

  1400. have confidence

  1401. to share the

  1402. truth and then

  1403. allow it to

  1404. drive you to

  1405. worship

  1406. maybe you're

  1407. a sufferer

  1408. here today

  1409. and perhaps

  1410. when you come

  1411. to this

  1412. passage you

  1413. are reminded

  1414. that Jesus

  1415. knows your

  1416. suffering

  1417. that there's

  1418. no suffering

  1419. you've experienced

  1420. that he did

  1421. not also

  1422. experience

  1423. he knows

  1424. he sympathizes

  1425. with your

  1426. weakness

  1427. receive his

  1428. comfort

  1429. maybe you're

  1430. a doubter

  1431. and if you're

  1432. a doubter

  1433. I just beg

  1434. you to

  1435. consider the

  1436. evidence

  1437. there is

  1438. abundant

  1439. evidence

  1440. consider it

  1441. if you're

  1442. a sinner

  1443. I invite

  1444. you to

  1445. turn to

  1446. Jesus

  1447. today

  1448. only he

  1449. can save

  1450. your sin

  1451. and that's

  1452. exactly what

  1453. he came

  1454. to do

  1455. we read

  1456. it in

  1457. John 3

  1458. God did

  1459. not send

  1460. his son

  1461. into the

  1462. world

  1463. to condemn

  1464. the world

  1465. not this

  1466. time

  1467. that time

  1468. comes at

  1469. the end

  1470. where he

  1471. will come

  1472. to condemn

  1473. the world

  1474. that time

  1475. has not

  1476. yet

  1477. occurred

  1478. God

  1479. sent

  1480. his son

  1481. into the

  1482. world

  1483. in order

  1484. that he

  1485. might

  1486. save

  1487. them

  1488. and he

  1489. says the

  1490. way that

  1491. you receive

  1492. this salvation

  1493. is through

  1494. faith

  1495. he that

  1496. believes

  1497. is not

  1498. condemned

  1499. but he

  1500. who does

  1501. not

  1502. believe

  1503. he's

  1504. condemned

  1505. already

  1506. you say

  1507. what am

  1508. I supposed

  1509. to do

  1510. cry out

  1511. to God

  1512. for mercy

  1513. acknowledging

  1514. that only

  1515. in Jesus

  1516. Christ

  1517. in his

  1518. crucifixion

  1519. and resurrection

  1520. is that

  1521. mercy

  1522. even possible

  1523. repent

  1524. from your

  1525. sin

  1526. trust in

  1527. him

  1528. faithfully

  1529. follow

  1530. for

  1531. reason

  1532. aspire to

  1533. aspire to

  1534. aspire to

  1535. aspire to

  1536. aspire to

  1537. aspire to

  1538. aspire to

  1539. aspire to

  1540. aspire to

  1541. aspire to

  1542. aspire to

  1543. aspire to

  1544. aspire to

  1545. aspire to

  1546. aspire to

  1547. aspire to

  1548. aspire to

  1549. aspire to

  1550. aspire to

  1551. aspire to

  1552. aspire to
