  1. This text introduces us to two people. We're only going to talk about the first, Simeon and Anna.

  2. Simeon took a particular interest in baby Jesus and announced a blessing on him that left Mary

  3. and Joseph in a state of awe. And for the purpose of our study this morning, I want to

  4. latch on to a specific phrase that Simeon uses. Look at it there in verse 30. And he says,

  5. My eyes have seen your salvation. My eyes have seen your salvation.

  6. Of course, we've noted throughout these last six weeks that Jesus is the Savior who has come to

  7. earth from heaven. But in this passage, I think we are compelled by Luke to move on from the fact

  8. of Jesus' coming to the purpose of his coming. And this word salvation that Simeon uses in verse 30

  9. perfectly summarizes the purpose for which Jesus came. And using this interaction with Simeon, I want

  10. to show you three things about the person and the work of Jesus and this child. I want to show you

  11. that Jesus himself is our salvation. I want to show you also that the events surrounding his birth

  12. ultimately serve the purpose of pointing forward to his inevitable death. He's our salvation. His birth is

  13. not about his birth. His birth is really about his death. And there's things that are happening here

  14. in the passage we just read that make that very clear. And then the last thing that maybe you'll see

  15. is that Jesus might not be the kind of Savior that you expected.

  16. I think for most people, maybe even the people who came to adore him in these passages,

  17. Jesus the Savior ended up being quite a surprise to them. I think there's some things that we can

  18. notice in these passages as we go. Again, latching onto that word salvation. First thing is this,

  19. I want you to see salvation symbolized. Salvation symbolized. Now, surely we can feel some sympathy

  20. for Mary and Joseph at this point in the narrative. An angel has just informed them in recent months

  21. that their new child is the Son of God and the Messiah. And that led to a series of other encounters

  22. that all have served the purpose of affirming that truth for Mary and Joseph. Now, becoming new parents

  23. is frightening enough on its own. Perhaps you remember the moment that maybe Ashlyn

  24. just turned 11 last week, and we were talking about a picture that I have of the first time

  25. that I ever held Ashlyn right after she was born. And I can remember some of the feelings of,

  26. I'm responsible for this. Like, if we mess this up, Julie, we've messed a lot up. Like, there's some

  27. serious implications to our ability to care for this child that we've been given. Okay, that's scary

  28. enough on its own. Now, put yourself in Mary and Joseph's shoes. An angelic figure has come to you

  29. and has said, not only are you going to have a child, but this child is the Messiah. This is the

  30. Son of God, and it's up to you to raise Him. You're going to have to be responsible for His care. You're

  31. going to have to be responsible to train Him and to raise Him to be a good Jewish young man,

  32. perhaps, is what's in their mind. Can you imagine the pressure? And they got off to a terrible start

  33. because they had to make this 90-mile walk from Nazareth to Bethlehem. And upon getting there,

  34. they can't even find a decent place for Mary to give birth when she goes into labor. And surely,

  35. you men can identify, perhaps, with Joseph, who probably is just thinking of himself as such a failure.

  36. Here, his wife is giving birth to the Son of God, and the best that he could do was a filthy manger

  37. to provide for this new child. And certainly, there's some excitement, maybe a bit of adrenaline rush as the

  38. shepherds rush down and they visit, but eventually the shepherds leave, and it's just them.

  39. It's just them amidst the animals. And perhaps there's a moment in all of that where Mary looks

  40. at Joseph and says, what do we do now? What are we supposed to do? There's no manual here on how to

  41. raise the Messiah. Like, is there special instructions we're supposed to follow? The angel didn't tell us

  42. all of that. He just said, you're going to have a son, and this is who he'll be, and this is what you

  43. should name him. And as we'll see in verses 21 to 24, the answer is that they did exactly what the

  44. law of God said to do. That's what they went with. After eight days, they circumcised Jesus. They gave

  45. him the name that was supposed to be given to him. Then after 40 days, they journeyed to Jerusalem

  46. so that they could present him to God in exactly the way that God's law had said to do it. Now, it's not

  47. the main point of the text, and it's not the main point of the message, but it is helpful nonetheless

  48. to note that in a moment of uncertainty, Joseph and Mary didn't wait for a sign in the sky

  49. before they decided what to do next. Oh, it was ordinary, routine faithfulness to God and to God's

  50. word that actually marked their lives. Alistair Begg was so helpful on this, and I've listened to him

  51. preach this passage, and he said, some of us are waiting to see what God does before we do what God

  52. says. And he says that's completely upside down. Joseph and Mary said, we will do what God says,

  53. and then we'll see what God does. And there is just a helpful side note here for us, isn't there,

  54. that just the ordinary faithfulness, they immediately upon not knowing what to do,

  55. not having any further instruction, they immediately went to the word of God, and they said,

  56. what does the word say for us to do? What does God say in his law that we are to do? And

  57. that's what they did. And it was through that ordinary obedience, that ordinary faithfulness,

  58. that God began to do this work in their lives, that God provided for them everything that they needed

  59. to raise this child exactly as he intended. And I think that's a helpful note for us, maybe just to

  60. tuck in the back of our minds as we move forward. Now look at verse 21. At the end of eight days, when he

  61. was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

  62. And when the time came for their purification, according to the law of Moses, they brought him

  63. up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. As it is written in the law of the Lord, every male who

  64. first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord, and to offer a sacrifice according to what is

  65. said in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtle doves or two young pigeons. Now the routine faithfulness of

  66. Joseph and Mary to do the things described in these verses may not seem like much, but it is actually of

  67. utmost importance as we understand the person of Jesus. Each step they took was either in obedience to

  68. God's law or in obedience to the direct instruction given through the angel. And their actions are

  69. important on two levels. The first is this, it was necessary that Jesus perfectly fulfill God's law.

  70. It was necessary that Jesus perfectly fulfill God's law. He said this himself, Matthew chapter five,

  71. the sermon on the mountain, Jesus says, do not think I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.

  72. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them. So that for Jesus to be the Savior, for him to

  73. actually be the one to bring us salvation, it wasn't enough for him just to stay out of trouble.

  74. This isn't only about his sinlessness. There is also this dynamic of fulfillment in Christ.

  75. It was necessary that he fulfill all the laws, that he fulfill all the pictures, that he fulfill all the

  76. promises recorded in the Old Testament. But as a baby, baby Jesus has no control over his own

  77. circumcision. He has no control over his own presentation to the Lord. Things that would be

  78. necessary for him to be the fulfillment of what those things were to picture in the plan of salvation.

  79. No, God providentially used Joseph and Mary's ordinary obedience so that he could fulfill his saving

  80. purposes in Christ Jesus. Do you see that? Jesus sat eight days old, didn't look up at Mary and say,

  81. all right, Mary, it's time. We better get this taken care of. Don't forget the angel said, Jesus,

  82. yes, make sure you do that. Jesus doesn't do that. No. He uses Mary and Joseph's ordinary

  83. obedience and faithfulness to accomplish his purpose.

  84. Now, I imagine there were many days that they felt keenly the weight of responsibility given to them.

  85. But the fact of the matter is that God's purposes could never be thwarted.

  86. Joseph and Mary weren't perfect people. They weren't perfect parents, but they had a perfect son,

  87. and God was using them to accomplish his purposes, and there was nothing that they were going to do

  88. that was going to keep God from doing that. He raised them up for this task. And though they

  89. weren't perfect, he sovereignly governed their lives so that his will would be accomplished through them.

  90. Now, in their minds, they just thought, we're just doing what every good Jewish family does.

  91. I doubt Joseph was sitting in Bethlehem thinking, you know, if we don't do this, he won't be the Savior.

  92. No, that's not what they're thinking. But their obedience, whether they understood it or not,

  93. was far more necessary to God's plan than that. And I don't know about you, but I find incredible comfort in that.

  94. The Christian life is dynamic.

  95. That there's no failure

  96. that I can exhibit

  97. that will hinder

  98. God's sovereign purposes in this world.

  99. Even when I do fail,

  100. and when I do sin,

  101. it is because God is allowing that to take place

  102. in order that he might accomplish

  103. his purposes in my life

  104. and in the lives of others.

  105. And I find comfort in the fact

  106. that as I go about my evangelism,

  107. perhaps, or as I go about

  108. raising my children, doing as much

  109. as I can to the glory of God, recognizing

  110. that I'm an imperfect father,

  111. and I'm an imperfect pastor,

  112. and I'm an imperfect Christian,

  113. I'm an imperfect friend,

  114. and all of those kinds of things.

  115. That God is always working

  116. in me. He's always working

  117. through me

  118. to do his will

  119. in my life and in the lives

  120. of people around me.

  121. And that's exactly what he's doing

  122. with Mary and Joseph.

  123. So it's first important on that level

  124. that Jesus had to be

  125. the fulfillment of all of these things.

  126. And he is that,

  127. and God uses Mary and Joseph's

  128. ordinary faithfulness for it.

  129. But the second reason

  130. this is so important

  131. is that these actions

  132. were symbols

  133. of the salvation

  134. Jesus had come to provide.

  135. Or symbols.

  136. Now, we don't have time

  137. to go into all of the details here.

  138. I'll have to leave it to you

  139. to look into some of these things

  140. on your own,

  141. but let's just touch

  142. on the three things here.

  143. First is circumcision.

  144. Circumcision was a sign

  145. of the Abrahamic covenant.

  146. It marked Israel's

  147. national identity

  148. as the people of God.

  149. It was a command of God

  150. for them to fulfill

  151. in obedience to him.

  152. But it was also meant by God

  153. as an object lesson

  154. of the need for cleansing

  155. from sin.

  156. This act of circumcision

  157. reminded them

  158. that from the very moment of birth,

  159. they are guilty in Adam,

  160. that they are under sin,

  161. that they have a nature of sin.

  162. And this act of circumcision

  163. communicated to the people

  164. over and over

  165. their need for cleansing,

  166. their need for mercy,

  167. and their need for grace.

  168. It was a physical symbol

  169. of the spiritual cleansing

  170. of the heart

  171. that takes place at salvation.

  172. And of course,

  173. circumcision was never capable

  174. of providing salvation,

  175. but it did remind the people

  176. that they needed salvation.

  177. And so it's necessary

  178. that Jesus go through this

  179. to fulfill the law of God

  180. and to point toward the symbol

  181. that it represented.

  182. The second thing is Jesus' name.

  183. Jesus' name.

  184. And it's also an important symbol

  185. of salvation,

  186. as was noted by

  187. the angelic message

  188. to Joseph

  189. in Matthew 1.

  190. She will bear a son,

  191. the angel says,

  192. and you shall call his name

  193. Jesus,

  194. for he will save his people

  195. from their sins.

  196. We've talked about this before.

  197. Jesus is the

  198. Greek equivalent

  199. of the

  200. Old Testament

  201. named Joshua,

  202. which means

  203. God will save.

  204. Yahweh will save.

  205. So even the name of Jesus

  206. communicates

  207. that God

  208. had sent him

  209. to bring salvation.

  210. And then the third thing here

  211. is the sacrifice

  212. that they made.

  213. If you want to learn

  214. more about this,

  215. you can go to

  216. Leviticus chapter 12,

    Leviticus 12 chapter mention

  217. and I think it's

  218. Exodus chapter 13,

    Exodus 13 chapter mention

  219. and you'll see

  220. all the things

  221. that the law

  222. had laid out here.

  223. But in short,

  224. the law considered

  225. a woman who gave birth

  226. ceremonially unclean

  227. for a certain period of time.

  228. And it depended,

  229. the time frame

  230. depended on whether

  231. or not their child

  232. was a boy

  233. or a girl.

  234. Now why there was

  235. a difference,

  236. I don't know.

  237. We'll have to ask the Lord

  238. when we get to heaven

  239. one day,

  240. but there was a difference.

  241. If you had a boy,

  242. you had to wait

  243. seven days

  244. for the initial part

  245. of their ceremonial cleansing,

  246. and then on the eighth day

  247. is when the circumcision

  248. was necessary for the boy.

  249. Then after that,

  250. they waited another

  251. 33 days.

  252. And after 33 days,

  253. that's when they would have

  254. presented the boy

  255. to the Lord.

  256. That's when the mother

  257. would be considered

  258. ceremonially clean

  259. and could go to the temple

  260. and could participate

  261. in all the things

  262. of worship in Israel

  263. that were necessary.

  264. If it was a baby girl,

  265. it's different.

  266. All of those things

  267. were doubled.

  268. Had to wait 14 days initially,

  269. and then another 66 days

  270. beyond that.

  271. So when we see

  272. that Mary and Joseph

  273. have come to the temple,

  274. and they have come

  275. to present baby Jesus

  276. to the Lord,

  277. the time frame here

  278. is all related

  279. to Leviticus chapter 12.

    Leviticus 12 chapter mention

  280. But the thing

  281. that was necessitated

  282. in the law

  283. was a sacrifice.

  284. And there were

  285. two parts to it.

  286. The first part

  287. was a one-year-old lamb

  288. for a burnt offering.

  289. The second part

  290. was a young pigeon

  291. or a turtle dove

  292. that would be

  293. for a sin offering.

  294. But the law

  295. made a provision

  296. for those

  297. who couldn't afford

  298. a lamb.

  299. If they didn't

  300. have a lamb

  301. or they couldn't afford

  302. to purchase a lamb,

  303. they could offer

  304. two birds

  305. instead of just

  306. one bird,

  307. and that would be enough

  308. for the burnt offering

  309. and for the sin offering.

  310. And so clearly,

  311. we see Mary and Joseph's

  312. poverty coming through

  313. as they didn't even

  314. have the money

  315. to pay for the lamb

  316. at this point.

  317. But then they go

  318. through the process,

  319. and what is it

  320. that they're doing

  321. as they offer

  322. these sacrifices?

  323. They're recognizing

  324. their need for atonement.

  325. They're recognizing

  326. their need for

  327. cleansing,

  328. forgiveness from God.

  329. You see,

  330. everything the Bible

  331. records about Jesus

  332. ultimately points forward

  333. to his salvation.

  334. And the events

  335. of his death,

  336. his birth,

  337. ultimately point

  338. toward his purpose,

  339. which was that

  340. he came to die.

  341. He came to be

  342. that sacrifice.

  343. He came to be

  344. that agent

  345. of cleansing

  346. that would provide

  347. true cleansing

  348. from sin.

  349. We're in desperate

  350. need of that cleansing.

  351. Jesus provides

  352. the salvation

  353. we need

  354. by dying

  355. as our sacrificial lamb.

  356. So we see here,

  357. salvation symbolized.

  358. Number two,

  359. salvation personified.

  360. Salvation

  361. personified.

  362. Look with me

  363. at verse 25.

  364. Now there was a man

  365. in Jerusalem

  366. whose name was Simeon.

  367. This man was righteous

  368. and devout,

  369. waiting for

  370. the consolation

  371. of Israel.

  372. And the Holy Spirit

  373. was upon him.

  374. And it had been revealed

  375. to him by the Holy Spirit

  376. that he would not

  377. see death

  378. before he had seen

  379. the Lord's Christ.

  380. Christ.

  381. And he came

  382. in the Spirit

  383. into the temple.

  384. And when the parents

  385. brought in the child

  386. Jesus to do for him

  387. according to

  388. the custom of the law.

  389. So Luke sets

  390. the scene for us.

  391. He mentions

  392. Simeon's character

  393. and faith

  394. first.

  395. Three things

  396. just to note

  397. in passing about it.

  398. We see first

  399. that Simeon

  400. was devoted

  401. to God.

  402. Luke says

  403. he was righteous

  404. and devout

  405. meaning he was

  406. obedient to God's word

  407. and careful

  408. to live his life

  409. for God's glory.

  410. So this is a unique man.

  411. He's devoted to God.

  412. Secondly,

  413. Luke tells us

  414. about his faith

  415. in God's promises.

  416. His faith

  417. in God's promises.

  418. That he was

  419. waiting

  420. for the consolation

  421. of Israel

  422. means that

  423. Simeon was

  424. a disciplined

  425. student of the Bible.

  426. That he was filled

  427. with expectancy

  428. about the Lord's Christ.

  429. And then finally

  430. we're told

  431. that Simeon

  432. was used

  433. by God.

  434. So the Spirit

  435. of God

  436. reveals to Simeon.

  437. We're not told

  438. how or in what way

  439. but reveals

  440. to Simeon

  441. that he would

  442. see the Messiah

  443. before he dies.

  444. And then the Holy Spirit

  445. leads him

  446. into the temple

  447. at precisely

  448. the time

  449. that Joseph

  450. and Mary

  451. are arriving

  452. at the temple

  453. to present

  454. Jesus

  455. to God

  456. according to the law.

  457. And here's

  458. the simple thing.

  459. Just like

  460. every believer

  461. God's salvation

  462. was revealed

  463. to Simeon

  464. by the Holy Spirit

  465. through the Holy Scriptures.

  466. There's no difference

  467. here for him

  468. than there is

  469. for any other person

  470. that comes to Christ.

  471. The Spirit

  472. leads us.

  473. The Spirit

  474. guides us.

  475. The Spirit

  476. opens our understanding

  477. of God's Word

  478. in order that

  479. we might be saved.

  480. Look at verse 28.

  481. Here's what Simeon did.

  482. He took him up

  483. in his arms

  484. and he blessed God

  485. and said,

  486. Lord,

  487. now your servant,

  488. you are letting

  489. your servant

  490. depart in peace

  491. according to your word.

  492. For my eyes

  493. have seen your salvation

  494. that you have prepared

  495. in the presence

  496. of all peoples.

  497. A light

  498. for revelation

  499. to the Gentiles

  500. and for glory

  501. to your people Israel.

  502. And his father

  503. and mother marveled

  504. at what was said

  505. about him.

  506. So directed

  507. by the Holy Spirit,

  508. Simeon immediately

  509. knew that Jesus

  510. was the promised

  511. Christ.

  512. And he took

  513. the baby up

  514. in his arms

  515. and he began

  516. to worship God.

  517. And again,

  518. Simeon's character

  519. and faith

  520. are revealed here.

  521. The word used

  522. for Lord

  523. that translates

  524. Lord here

  525. is the Greek word

  526. despotes.

  527. Now that's not

  528. the typical word

  529. for Lord

  530. in the New Testament.

  531. Typically it's

  532. kurios,

  533. but not here.

  534. It's despotes,

  535. despot.

  536. Most often

  537. this is used

  538. in the New Testament

  539. to translate

  540. slave owner.

  541. And then he follows

  542. it up with servant.

  543. Dulos

  544. literally means slave.

  545. This tells us

  546. something not about

  547. the dynamics

  548. of slavery

  549. in that time.

  550. It tells us

  551. something about

  552. Simeon's mind

  553. toward God.

  554. He viewed God

  555. as his Lord,

  556. as having full control,

  557. full authority

  558. over everything

  559. that Simeon did

  560. and thought

  561. and believed

  562. and he's recognizing

  563. in this moment

  564. of worship

  565. that God

  566. is his Lord,

  567. that he is

  568. the slave of God.

  569. He is the servant

  570. of God.

  571. And we see

  572. his character,

  573. his godliness,

  574. his devoutness,

  575. his righteousness

  576. coming through.

  577. The point is

  578. that he viewed

  579. his whole life

  580. as being devoted

  581. to God

  582. and his purposes,

  583. a distinguishing

  584. mark for a Christian.

  585. And then his faith

  586. was in God's word.

  587. Did you see that?

  588. He says,

  589. now you're letting

  590. your servant

  591. depart in peace

  592. according to

  593. your word.

  594. Another distinguishing

  595. mark

  596. of a Christian.

  597. But it's the rest

  598. of Simeon's statement

  599. that I want to

  600. draw your attention to.

  601. There's two things

  602. of note here

  603. about his recognition

  604. of God's salvation.

  605. First,

  606. salvation

  607. is a person.

  608. It's a person.

  609. For my eyes

  610. have seen

  611. your salvation.

  612. He doesn't say

  613. I have experienced

  614. God's salvation.

  615. No.

  616. He says

  617. I have seen

  618. your salvation.

  619. So when he looked

  620. at baby Jesus

  621. under the inspiration

  622. of the Holy Spirit,

  623. Simeon knew

  624. he was gazing

  625. upon the one

  626. and only Savior.

  627. You see,

  628. Simeon knew

  629. that salvation

  630. is not a place

  631. like heaven.

  632. So when we share

  633. the gospel,

  634. we don't win people

  635. to heaven

  636. because salvation

  637. is not heaven.

  638. Simeon recognized

  639. that salvation

  640. is not

  641. a

  642. thing

  643. like

  644. material

  645. or

  646. wealth

  647. or prosperity.

  648. So when we

  649. share the gospel,

  650. we're not

  651. persuading people

  652. to a better life

  653. because that's not

  654. what salvation is.

  655. Salvation is in

  656. a better life.

  657. Simeon understood

  658. that salvation

  659. was not an ideal

  660. state

  661. of inner peace

  662. or a fulfillment.

  663. So when we

  664. invite people

  665. to the gospel,

  666. we're not inviting

  667. them to a new

  668. spiritual level

  669. of peace

  670. that's going to

  671. finally settle

  672. all the chaos

  673. in their lives

  674. and it's going to

  675. set their minds

  676. exactly where

  677. their minds

  678. need to be.

  679. That's not the

  680. message of salvation.

  681. Salvation is a

  682. person

  683. in Simeon's eyes.

  684. Salvation is

  685. Jesus.

  686. And to receive

  687. salvation is not

  688. to grasp

  689. onto health

  690. or wealth

  691. or personal

  692. fulfillment.

  693. It's to leave

  694. all of those

  695. things actually.

  696. At least your

  697. primary desire

  698. for all of those

  699. things and to

  700. cling trustingly

  701. to the baby.

  702. To cling

  703. trustingly

  704. to the Savior.

  705. To cling

  706. trustingly

  707. to Jesus.

  708. Salvation is

  709. a person.

  710. So when we

  711. share the gospel

  712. we're sharing

  713. a person.

  714. We're bringing

  715. people to a

  716. person.

  717. But then

  718. salvation is

  719. also we see

  720. here for all

  721. peoples.

  722. Salvation is

  723. for all peoples.

  724. Look at what

  725. Simeon says.

  726. This salvation

  727. is prepared in

  728. the presence of

  729. all peoples.

  730. A light for

  731. revelation to

  732. the Gentiles for

  733. glory to your

  734. people Israel.

  735. excuse me.

  736. So Jesus is

  737. salvation and

  738. Jesus is for

  739. everyone who

  740. will come to

  741. him in

  742. repentance and

  743. faith.

  744. Simeon's actually

  745. quoting Isaiah

  746. here.

  747. In Isaiah

    Isaiah 49 chapter mention

  748. chapter 49

  749. is God

  750. speaking of

  751. the Messiah

  752. says is it

  753. to light a

  754. thing that you

  755. should be my

  756. servant to

  757. raise up the

  758. tribes of Jacob

  759. and bring back

  760. the preserved of

  761. Israel.

  762. I will make

  763. you as a

  764. light for the

  765. nations God

  766. says.

  767. That salvation

  768. may reach to

  769. the ends of

  770. the earth.

  771. Jesus would

  772. later identify

  773. himself in this

  774. way.

  775. Remember John

    John 8 chapter mention

  776. chapter 8.

  777. Again Jesus

  778. spoke to them

  779. saying I am

  780. the light of

  781. the world.

  782. Whoever follows

  783. me will not

  784. walk in darkness

  785. but will have

  786. the light of

  787. life.

  788. John affirmed

  789. this at the

  790. beginning of his

  791. gospel in John

    John 1 chapter mention

  792. chapter 1 he

  793. said the true

  794. light which gives

  795. light to everyone

  796. was coming into

  797. the world.

  798. He was in the

  799. world and the

  800. world was made

  801. through him yet

  802. the world did

  803. not know him.

  804. He came to his

  805. own and his own

  806. people did not

  807. receive him.

  808. but to all who

  809. did receive him

  810. who believed in

  811. his name he

  812. gave the right to

  813. become the

  814. children of God

  815. who were born

  816. not of blood or

  817. of the will of

  818. the flesh nor

  819. of the will of

  820. man but of

  821. God.

  822. And here's the

  823. point.

  824. Jesus is the

  825. only light that

  826. can overcome the

  827. darkness of sin in

  828. your life and in

  829. my life.

  830. And according to

  831. the Bible to

  832. receive salvation is

  833. to receive Jesus

  834. and the way you

  835. receive Jesus is by

  836. believing in his

  837. name.

  838. Then and only

  839. then will we

  840. receive forgiveness

  841. of sin.

  842. Then and only

  843. then will we be

  844. reconciled to God

  845. in peace as his

  846. children.

  847. We're almost

  848. finished.

  849. The third thing I

  850. want you to see is

  851. salvation

  852. clarified.

  853. So we've seen

  854. salvation symbolized.

  855. We've seen

  856. salvation personified.

  857. I want you to see

  858. salvation clarified.

  859. Excuse me.

  860. Generally the

  861. Jews believe that

  862. the Messiah would

  863. be a towering

  864. political military

  865. leader.

  866. And that

  867. ultimately the

  868. salvation that he

  869. brought would be

  870. the destruction of

  871. Israel's enemies.

  872. Jesus actually

  873. proved to be a

  874. surprising Messiah

  875. for them at

  876. least in that he

  877. did not meet those

  878. expectations.

  879. You remember in our

  880. study of Mark even

  881. the disciples didn't

  882. grasp all of this

  883. until after Jesus'

  884. crucifixion and

  885. resurrection.

  886. See Jesus' focus

  887. was not on

  888. deliverance from

  889. Rome.

  890. His focus was on

  891. deliverance from

  892. sin.

  893. His peace was not a

  894. national peace.

  895. It was a peace with

  896. God.

  897. The life that he

  898. offered was not

  899. full of material

  900. prosperity.

  901. He actually promised

  902. the opposite in many

  903. cases.

  904. It was a life of

  905. spiritual prosperity.

  906. mercy.

  907. But Simeon turns his

  908. attention here in

  909. verses 34 and 35 to

  910. Mary in particular.

  911. And he pronounces a

  912. prophetic blessing on

  913. Joseph and Mary.

  914. And there's a

  915. mysterious prophecy in

  916. this of what the

  917. child's future would

  918. be.

  919. Look at verse 34.

  920. We're almost there.

  921. Simeon blessed them

  922. and said to Mary his

  923. mother,

  924. Behold this child is

  925. appointed for the fall

  926. and rising of many

  927. in Israel for a sign

  928. that is opposed.

  929. And then he kind of

  930. has this side statement

  931. for Mary and a sword

  932. will pierce through

  933. your own soul also.

  934. So that thoughts from

  935. many hearts may be

  936. revealed.

  937. Jesus' life and

  938. ministry as you know

  939. would expose and

  940. confront Israel's sin

  941. particularly their

  942. spiritual pride.

  943. He would reveal the

  944. true nature of their

  945. hearts so that the

  946. spiritually arrogant

  947. would be judged and

  948. the humble would

  949. ultimately be exalted.

  950. So Jesus confronts

  951. those who trusted

  952. their Jewish heritage

  953. or their commitment

  954. to the law.

  955. He judged them.

  956. He condemned those

  957. people.

  958. while he acknowledged

  959. that or those who

  960. acknowledge their sin

  961. and cast themselves

  962. on the mercy of God

  963. were saved.

  964. And you can step back

  965. and you can read the

  966. Gospels again and you'll

  967. see that this was

  968. consistently the teaching

  969. and the interactions

  970. that Jesus had.

  971. Those who constantly

  972. trusted in how they

  973. were brought up.

  974. Those who constantly

  975. trusted in their

  976. religious associations

  977. and their religious

  978. observances.

  979. observances God

  980. or Jesus condemned

  981. those people.

  982. He told them

  983. straight out

  984. I didn't come

  985. for you.

  986. No it was the

  987. humble

  988. the

  989. abased

  990. those who

  991. acknowledged their

  992. sin

  993. who cast themselves

  994. not on their own

  995. goodness or efforts

  996. but cast themselves

  997. on the mercy of God

  998. those were the ones

  999. that Jesus

  1000. went to.

  1001. And this comes

  1002. through most

  1003. clearly in Jesus'

  1004. interactions with

  1005. the Pharisees.

  1006. We could go to

  1007. several places.

  1008. Let's just look at

  1009. one.

  1010. You're in Luke.

  1011. Would you flip over

  1012. to chapter 18?

  1013. Just quickly

  1014. chapter 18 of Luke.

  1015. You probably know

  1016. the story well

1017. but I think it would

1018. serve us well as we

1019. finish to look at it

  1020. together.

  1021. Luke 18

    Luke 18:9

  1022. verse 9

  1023. Jesus also

  1024. told this parable

  1025. to some

  1026. who trusted

  1027. in themselves

  1028. that they

  1029. were righteous

  1030. and in doing

  1031. that they

  1032. treated others

  1033. with contempt.

  1034. These are the

  1035. people Jesus

  1036. is addressing.

  1037. He's telling

  1038. this parable

  1039. about them.

  1040. Here's the

  1041. parable.

  1042. Two men

  1043. went up into

  1044. the temple

  1045. to pray.

  1046. One was a

  1047. Pharisee

  1048. the other

  1049. a tax collector.

  1050. We're looking

  1051. at two

  1052. completely

  1053. opposite people

  1054. here as far

  1055. as culture

  1056. was concerned

  1057. in their day.

  1058. The Pharisee

  1059. standing by

  1060. himself

  1061. prayed

  1062. thus

  1063. God I

  1064. thank you

  1065. that I'm

  1066. not like

  1067. other men

  1068. extortioners

  1069. unjust

  1070. adulterers

  1071. or even

  1072. like this

  1073. tax collector

  1074. I fast

  1075. twice a week

  1076. I give

  1077. tithes

  1078. of all

  1079. that I

  1080. get

  1081. but the

  1082. tax collector

  1083. standing

  1084. far off

  1085. would not

  1086. even lift

  1087. up his

  1088. eyes

  1089. to heaven

  1090. but beat

  1091. his breast

  1092. saying

  1093. God

  1094. be merciful

  1095. to me

  1096. a sinner

  1097. notice

  1098. what Jesus

  1099. says

  1100. I tell

  1101. you

  1102. this man

  1103. went down

  1104. to his

  1105. house

  1106. justified

  1107. rather than

  1108. the other

  1109. for everyone

  1110. who exalts

  1111. himself

  1112. will be

  1113. humbled

  1114. but the

  1115. one who

  1116. humbles

  1117. himself

  1118. will be

  1119. exalted

  1120. this is

  1121. such an

  1122. important

  1123. parable

  1124. of the

  1125. Lord

  1126. because

  1127. we see

  1128. the same

  1129. dynamic

  1130. play out

  1131. all the

  1132. time

  1133. if you're

  1134. around

  1135. Christians

  1136. or those

  1137. who

  1138. profess

  1139. Christianity

  1140. you see

  1141. this all

  1142. the time

  1143. there are

  1144. those who

  1145. fit this

  1146. equation

  1147. of what

  1148. this

  1149. Pharisee

  1150. was

  1151. God

  1152. I

  1153. thank you

  1154. that I'm

  1155. not as

  1156. bad as

  1157. those

  1158. people

  1159. I

  1160. thank you

  1161. that I've

  1162. never been

  1163. guilty of

  1164. homosexuality

  1165. I'm thankful

  1166. that I

  1167. have never

  1168. been guilty

  1169. of abortion

  1170. or influencing

  1171. somebody in

  1172. that way

  1173. I thank you

  1174. Lord that

  1175. you didn't

  1176. make me

  1177. like them

  1178. but instead

  1179. you have

  1180. given me

  1181. the wisdom

  1182. to go

  1183. and give

  1184. my money

  1185. to the

  1186. church

  1187. you've

  1188. given

  1189. me

  1190. the wisdom

  1191. to actually

  1192. go to

  1193. the church

  1194. services

  1195. and I

  1196. do this

  1197. and I

  1198. do that

  1199. and look

  1200. at my

  1201. upbringing

  1202. and look

  1203. at all

  1204. that I

  1205. have done

  1206. I have

  1207. all the

  1208. pedigree

  1209. that's

  1210. necessary

  1211. to be

  1212. a

  1213. Christian

  1214. and Jesus

  1215. looks at

  1216. those people

  1217. and he

  1218. says they

  1219. will not

  1220. inherit

  1221. the

  1222. kingdom

  1223. of heaven

  1224. he looks

  1225. rather

  1226. at the

  1227. one

  1228. who stands

  1229. far off

  1230. who's

  1231. unwilling

  1232. in acknowledging

  1233. their own

  1234. sinful condition

  1235. to even lift

  1236. their eyes

  1237. up to God

  1238. who beats

  1239. their breast

  1240. and says

  1241. have mercy

  1242. on me

  1243. God

  1244. have mercy

  1245. on me

  1246. a sinner

  1247. have mercy

  1248. on me

  1249. for all

  1250. the times

  1251. that I

  1252. thought

  1253. being a

  1254. good

  1255. Christian

  1256. boy

  1257. or a

  1258. good

  1259. Christian

  1260. girl

  1261. was enough

  1262. to get

  1263. to heaven

  1264. was enough

  1265. to get

  1266. peace

  1267. with God

  1268. forgive

  1269. me

  1270. for all

  1271. the times

  1272. that I

  1273. have rebelled

  1274. forgive me

  1275. for all

  1276. the times

  1277. that I

  1278. have been

  1279. filled

  1280. with spiritual

  1281. pride

  1282. have mercy

  1283. on me

  1284. God

  1285. Jesus

  1286. says

  1287. that's the

  1288. one who

  1289. goes home

  1290. justified

  1291. that's the

  1292. one to

  1293. whom God's

  1294. grace has

  1295. been given

  1296. that's the

  1297. one

  1298. who can

  1299. take

  1300. assurance

  1301. in the

  1302. reality

  1303. of their

  1304. salvation

  1305. Jesus

  1306. says

  1307. you see

  1308. Jesus

  1309. is a

  1310. surprising

  1311. savior

  1312. for many

  1313. people

  1314. Simeon

  1315. says

  1316. this

  1317. one

  1318. will

  1319. be

  1320. appointed

  1321. for the

  1322. rising

  1323. and the

  1324. fall

  1325. of many

  1326. in Israel

  1327. the

  1328. rising

  1329. of the

  1330. prostitutes

  1331. the

  1332. rising

  1333. of the

  1334. tax

  1335. collectors

  1336. the

  1337. rising

  1338. of the

  1339. publicans

  1340. and the

  1341. fall

  1342. of the

  1343. Pharisees

  1344. and the

  1345. fall

  1346. of the

  1347. Sadducees

  1348. and the

  1349. fall

  1350. of the

  1351. others

  1352. who were

  1353. so filled

  1354. with spiritual

  1355. pride

  1356. as to think

  1357. that their

  1358. salvation

  1359. had anything

  1360. to do

  1361. with them

  1362. Simeon's

  1363. prophecy

  1364. comes to be

  1365. very true

  1366. as we read

  1367. the gospels

  1368. but he

  1369. doesn't stop

  1370. there

  1371. it was for

  1372. this reason

  1373. that Jesus

  1374. was opposed

  1375. by many

  1376. in Israel

  1377. to the

  1378. point

  1379. that they

  1380. sought to

  1381. execute him

  1382. and you

  1383. see how

  1384. Simeon's

  1385. prophecy

  1386. is working

  1387. here

  1388. and we

  1389. see

  1390. this is

  1391. exactly

  1392. what

  1393. Jesus

  1394. did

  1395. Jesus

  1396. went

  1397. through

  1398. and he

  1399. he's

  1400. telling

  1401. parables

  1402. like this

  1403. about how

  1404. Pharisees

  1405. are going

  1406. to go

  1407. to hell

  1408. and how

  1409. tax collectors

  1410. are going

  1411. to go

  1412. to heaven

  1413. that didn't

  1414. win him

  1415. a lot

  1416. of fan

  1417. favorites

  1418. Jesus

  1419. became

  1420. opposed

  1421. so that

  1422. the religious

  1423. elite

  1424. and the

  1425. powerful

  1426. of his

  1427. day

  1428. fought

  1429. against

  1430. him

  1431. because

  1432. he

  1433. was

  1434. a

  1435. surprising

  1436. messiah

  1437. he

  1438. wasn't

  1439. the

  1440. savior

  1441. they

  1442. actually

  1443. wanted

  1444. they

  1445. wanted

  1446. the

  1447. savior

  1448. that

  1449. would

  1450. come

  1451. and

  1452. say

  1453. you've

  1454. been

  1455. good

  1456. little

  1457. Jews

  1458. and

  1459. good

  1460. little

  1461. Pharisees

  1462. and

  1463. good

  1464. little

  1465. priest

  1466. and

  1467. good

  1468. little

  1469. !

  1470. they

  1471. wanted

  1472. deliverance

  1473. from

  1474. Rome

  1475. and

  1476. they

  1477. wanted

  1478. themselves

  1479. to be

  1480. elevated

  1481. and

  1482. when

  1483. Jesus

  1484. came

  1485. clearly

  1486. showing

  1487. the power

  1488. of God

  1489. on his

  1490. life

  1491. clearly

  1492. teaching

  1493. in a way

  1494. that people

  1495. were drawn

  1496. to

  1497. because

  1498. he

  1499. was

  1500. the

  1501. son

  1502. of

  1503. God

  1504. because

  1505. he

  1506. wasn't

  1507. the

  1508. messiah

  1509. they

  1510. expected

  1511. they

  1512. rejected

  1513. him

  1514. and

  1515. Simeon

  1516. said

  1517. this

  1518. is

  1519. what

  1520. will

  1521. happen

  1522. he

  1523. will

  1524. be

  1525. a

  1526. sign

  1527. that

  1528. is

  1529. opposed

  1530. and

  1531. that's

  1532. exactly

  1533. what

  1534. happened

  1535. with

  1536. Jesus

  1537. life

  1538. he

  1539. was

  1540. opposed

  1541. to

  1542. the

  1543. point

  1544. that

  1545. he

  1546. was

  1547. crucified

  1548. and

  1549. then

  1550. there's

  1551. this

  1552. little

  1553. side

  1554. statement

  1555. for

  1556. Mary

  1557. a

  1558. sword

  1559. that

  1560. pierced

  1561. Mary's

  1562. soul

  1563. as

  1564. well

  1565. you

  1566. mothers

  1567. surely

  1568. you

  1569. can

  1570. relate

  1571. to

  1572. this

  1573. what

  1574. it

  1575. must

  1576. have

  1577. been

  1578. like

  1579. for

  1580. Mary

  1581. to

  1582. sit

  1583. in

  1584. Nazareth

  1585. that

  1586. that's

  1587. where

  1588. she

  1589. remained

  1590. during

  1591. the

  1592. days

  1593. of

  1594. Jesus

  1595. ministry

  1596. wondering

  1597. where

  1598. her

  1599. boy

  1600. was

  1601. knowing

  1602. that

  1603. as

  1604. Jesus

  1605. said

  1606. to

  1607. one

  1608. man

  1609. the

  1610. son

  1611. of

  1612. man

  1613. he

  1614. has

  1615. got

  1616. no

  1617. place

  1618. to

  1619. lay

  1620. his

  1621. head

  1622. foxes

  1623. have

  1624. holes

  1625. and

  1626. birds

  1627. have

  1628. nests

  1629. Jesus

  1630. said

  1631. but

  1632. I

  1633. have

  1634. no

  1635. !

  1636. I

  1637. have

  1638. no

  1639. place

  1640. to

  1641. lay

  1642. my

  1643. head

  1644. and

  1645. perhaps

  1646. Mary

  1647. hearing

  1648. Jesus

  1649. saying

  1650. that

  1651. at

  1652. some

  1653. point

  1654. along

  1655. the

  1656. way

  1657. in

  1658. his

  1659. ministry

  1660. perhaps

  1661. she

  1662. lays

  1663. awake

  1664. at

  1665. night

  1666. wondering

  1667. where

  1668. is

  1669. my

  1670. boy

  1671. today

  1672. is

  1673. he

  1674. safe

  1675. has

  1676. he

  1677. had

  1678. food

  1679. today

  1680. remember

  1681. when

  1682. Jesus

  1683. visited

  1684. his

  1685. hometown

  1686. in

  1687. Nazareth

  1688. they

  1689. were

  1690. so

  1691. offended

  1692. by

  1693. his

  1694. teaching

  1695. in

  1696. the

  1697. synagogue

  1698. that

  1699. they

  1700. tried

  1701. to

  1702. murder

  1703. him

  1704. right

  1705. then

  1706. and

  1707. there

  1708. they

  1709. tried

  1710. to

  1711. cast

  1712. him

  1713. off

  1714. of

  1715. a

  1716. cliff

  1717. you

  1718. know

  1719. Mary

  1720. was

  1721. there

  1722. what

  1723. it

  1724. must

  1725. have

  1726. been

  1727. like

  1728. for

  1729. her

  1730. to

  1731. walk

  1732. through

  1733. town

  1734. and

  1735. hear

  1736. the

  1737. snickers

  1738. or hear

  1739. the

  1740. reviling

  1741. that

  1742. came

  1743. from

  1744. the

  1745. others

  1746. that

  1747. were

  1748. in

  1749. Nazareth

  1750. or

  1751. that

  1752. were

  1753. passing

  1754. through

  1755. when

  1756. she

  1757. visited

  1758. Capernaum

  1759. to

  1760. hear

  1761. of

  1762. the

  1763. plots

  1764. against

  1765. her

  1766. son

  1767. that

  1768. were

  1769. taking

  1770. place

  1771. for

  1772. three

  1773. years

  1774. to

  1775. have

  1776. him

  1777. put

  1778. to

  1779. death

  1780. what

  1781. it

  1782. must

  1783. have

  1784. been

  1785. like

  1786. for

  1787. Mary

  1788. to

  1789. stand

  1790. at

  1791. Golgotha

  1792. and gaze

  1793. for those

  1794. six

  1795. hours

  1796. at

  1797. the

  1798. broken

  1799. body

  1800. of

  1801. her

  1802. son

  1803. as

  1804. he

  1805. died

  1806. on

  1807. the

  1808. cross

  1809. yes

  1810. a

  1811. sword

  1812. pierced

  1813. her

  1814. soul

  1815. too

  1816. but

  1817. it

  1818. was

  1819. this

  1820. very

  1821. opposition

  1822. that

  1823. God

  1824. determined

  1825. to

  1826. use

  1827. to

  1828. bring

  1829. us

  1830. salvation

  1831. it

  1832. was

  1833. Christ's

  1834. crucifixion

  1835. that

  1836. made

  1837. an

  1838. atonement

  1839. for

  1840. our

  1841. sins

  1842. and

  1843. through

  1844. it

  1845. he

  1846. fulfilled

  1847. his

  1848. purpose

  1849. as

  1850. the

  1851. savior

  1852. and

  1853. Simeon

  1854. here

  1855. with

  1856. a

  1857. measure

  1858. of

  1859. mystery

  1860. especially

  1861. to

  1862. Mary

  1863. and

  1864. Joseph

  1865. at

  1866. least

  1867. at

  1868. this

  1869. point

  1870. prophetically

  1871. states

  1872. and

  1873. clarifies

  1874. the

  1875. purpose

  1876. of

  1877. salvation

  1878. how

  1879. it

  1880. would

  1881. actually

  1882. come

  1883. the

  1884. wonderful

  1885. truth

  1886. of

  1887. this

  1888. verse

  1889. is

  1890. what

  1891. we

  1892. call

  1893. the

  1894. doctrine

  1895. of

  1896. imputation

  1897. We read

  1898. it in

  1899. 2 Corinthians

  1900. 5

  1901. for our

  1902. sake

  1903. God

  1904. made

  1905. him

  1906. to

  1907. be

  1908. sin

  1909. who

  1910. knew

  1911. no

  1912. sin

  1913. so

  1914. that

  1915. in

  1916. him

  1917. we

  1918. might

  1919. become

  1920. the

  1921. righteousness

  1922. of

  1923. God

  1924. that's

  1925. the

  1926. transaction

  1927. that

  1928. happens

  1929. on

  1930. Calvary

  1931. Jesus

  1932. the

  1933. righteous

  1934. one

  1935. has

  1936. the

  1937. wrath

  1938. of

  1939. God

  1940. poured

  1941. on

  1942. him

  1943. our

  1944. sin

  1945. imputed

  1946. onto

  1947. Christ

  1948. so

  1949. that

  1950. by

  1951. faith

  1952. God

  1953. then

  1954. imputes

  1955. the

  1956. righteousness

  1957. of

  1958. Christ

  1959. onto

  1960. us

  1961. salvation

  1962. had

  1963. nothing

  1964. to do

  1965. with

  1966. Rome

  1967. salvation

  1968. had

  1969. everything

  1970. to do

  1971. with

  1972. sin

  1973. this

  1974. is

  1975. how

  1976. Jesus

  1977. became

  1978. our

  1979. savior

  1980. and

  1981. man's

  1982. response

  1983. to

  1984. this

  1985. gospel

  1986. is

  1987. how

  1988. Jesus

  1989. reveals

  1990. the

  1991. true

  1992. thoughts

  1993. of

  1994. our

  1995. hearts

  1996. that

  1997. was

  1998. the

  1999. final

  2000. thing

  2001. that

  2002. Simeon

  2003. said

  2004. he

  2005. will

  2006. reveal

  2007. the

  2008. true

  2009. thoughts

  2010. of

  2011. our

  2012. hearts

  2013. how

  2014. does

  2015. he

  2016. do

  2017. that

  2018. by

  2019. how

  2020. we

  2021. respond

  2022. to

  2023. this

  2024. gospel

  2025. message

  2026. you

  2027. can be

  2028. a

  2029. Christian

  2030. all

  2031. day

  2032. and not

  2033. be

  2034. a

  2035. Christian

  2036. it's

  2037. when it

  2038. comes

  2039. down

  2040. to

  2041. the

  2042. actual

  2043. truth

  2044. of

  2045. the

  2046. gospel

  2047. that

  2048. reveals

  2049. the

  2050. truth

  2051. of

  2052. what

  2053. is

  2054. in

  2055. your

  2056. heart

  2057. it's

  2058. not

  2059. about

  2060. all

  2061. those

  2062. exterior

  2063. things

  2064. that

  2065. all

  2066. of

  2067. us

  2068. are

  2069. really

  2070. good

  2071. at

  2072. faking

  2073. it's

  2074. not

  2075. about

  2076. that

  2077. it's

  2078. what

  2079. do

  2080. you

  2081. do

  2082. with

  2083. Jesus

  2084. what

  2085. will

  2086. you

  2087. do

  2088. with

  2089. Jesus

  2090. and

  2091. who

  2092. would

  2093. have

  2094. thought

  2095. that

  2096. a

  2097. man's

  2098. interaction

  2099. with

  2100. a

  2101. young

  2102. couple

  2103. their

  2105. baby

  2106. would

  2107. be

  2108. so

  2109. helpful

  2110. in

  2111. helping

  2112. us

  2113. to

  2114. understand

  2115. the

  2116. significance

  2117. of

  2118. this

  2119. child

  2120. we're

  2121. closing

  2122. this

  2123. study

  2124. of

  2125. the

  2126. narrative

  2127. of

  2128. Jesus

  2129. birth

  2130. today

  2131. and

  2132. I

  2133. hope

  2134. that

  2135. you

  2136. have

  2137. seen

  2138. through

  2139. this

  2140. maybe

  2141. perhaps

  2142. seen

  2143. afresh

  2144. it's

  2145. not

  2146. that

  2147. you

  2148. haven't

  2149. seen

  2150. it

  2151. before

  2152. I

  2153. recognize

  2154. that

  2155. but

  2156. maybe

  2157. you've

  2158. seen

  2159. afresh

  2160. the

  2161. purpose

  2162. for

  2163. which

  2164. Jesus

  2165. came

  2166. he

  2167. is

  2168. salvation

  2169. for

  2170. everyone

  2171. who

  2172. will

  2173. receive

  2174. him

  2175. and

  2176. to

  2177. receive

  2178. him

  2179. is

  2180. to

  2181. trust

  2182. in

  2183. him

  2184. alone

  2185. as

  2186. Lord

  2187. and

  2188. Savior

  2189. and

  2190. to

  2191. trust

  2192. in

  2193. him

  2194. as

  2195. Lord

  2196. and

  2197. Savior

  2198. is

  2199. not

  2200. a

  2201. matter

  2202. of

  2203. intellectual

  2204. ascent

  2205. it's

  2206. a

  2207. life

  2208. transforming

  2209. work

  2210. of

  2211. the

  2212. Holy

  2213. Spirit

  2214. of

  2215. God

  2216. this

  2217. is

  2218. why

  2219. he

  2220. came

  2221. to

  2222. us

  2223. and

  2224. now

  2225. he

  2226. invites

  2227. us

  2228. to

  2229. come

  2230. to

  2231. him

  2232. which

  2233. is

  2234. where

  2235. we

  2236. leave

  2237. it

  2238. all

  2239. what

  2240. will

  2241. you

  2243. with

  2244. this
