  1. According to the Bible, what we refer to as the call of a pastor or the call of an elder

  2. is far more external than it is internal.

  3. So how do you know if God has called you to be a parent?

  4. Well, if he blesses you with a child, you know.

  5. He's called you.

  6. Well, how do you know if God has called a man to be a pastor?

  7. Well, indeed, there's going to be an inward working of God's Spirit.

  8. There's going to be a desire there for the work.

  9. Even if it's a reluctant desire, it's a desire nonetheless.

  10. Paul wrote to Timothy, whoever desires the office of an overseer desires a noble thing.

  11. And surely we need more men in churches who are willing to actively take the lead

  12. and desire the work of shepherding God's people.

  13. Well, undoubtedly, that is a necessary and an essential part of it.

  14. But the certainty of a man's call involves meeting particular qualifications,

  15. displaying giftedness that shows not that he's capable in and of himself to perform the task,

  16. but that God has uniquely given him a gift to communicate the Word.

  17. It takes being recognized for the task by a congregation.

  18. A man doesn't establish his own eldership, in other words.

  19. Instead, the church recognizes the clear display of God's work in a man's life.

  20. So we ought not immediately begin to think when it's time to establish more leadership in our church,

  21. our first thought ought not to be, well, who says that they want to do it?

  22. The first step should be an examination of the church of who is actually already doing it.

  23. Who meets the objective qualifications given by the Lord?

  24. And then we move forward from there.

  25. That's really what this text is about.

  26. If the call of a man is more external than it is internal,

  27. then this particular passage, along with a few others,

  28. helps us to understand what the objective and external qualifications are.

  29. And the text before us reveals that elders are model Christians.

  30. That's really the basis of it.

  31. They're just model Christians with a unique gifting from God to lead the church.

  32. And what is described in these verses is it's not a list of requirements for capable men to try to live up to

  33. so that we would appoint someone who seems gifted and hope that they figure it out along the way.

  34. No, it's actually a list of qualifications that faithful men are already living up to.

  35. And the church simply recognizes what the Lord is doing in their life.

  36. Paul's primary concern as we dig in here, Paul's primary concern,

  37. and really the summary title of these qualifications,

  38. is that an elder be above reproach.

  39. We see it in both verses 6 and 7.

  40. Look at it with me.

  41. He immediately begins,

  42. So that's kind of the big umbrella under which everything else that he writes here falls under.

  43. Is this man above reproach?

  44. Is he actually a model that is fit for imitation?

  45. It means to be unimpeachable.

  46. Above reproach doesn't demand perfection,

  47. but it suggests a kind of person against which an accusation would be surprising or out of character.

  48. It means that one lives their life in such a way that

  49. those looking for a way to condemn them cannot find a reasonable way to do it.

  50. That's really what it means.

  51. It's not perfection.

  52. It just means what characterizes their life is a life of actual godliness.

  53. That even if you tried to accuse them,

  54. you'd really have to jump through some hoops to do it.

  55. And according to Paul,

  56. being above reproach is essential to church elders

  57. because they act as God's servants to God's people.

  58. Look at it again in verse 7.

  59. For an overseer as God's steward must be above reproach.

  60. William Mount said they are not watching over a human institution.

  61. They are stewards over God's house.

  62. Why is it that we have to be so concerned with this above reproach, this model?

  63. Because it's not because they're building a business.

  64. It's that they're stewarding the people of God for the glory of God.

  65. And so God demands of them that they actually be above reproach.

  66. Elders above reproach are models for the congregation.

  67. And the text gives us three categories

  68. which living above reproach qualifies a man to be a pastor.

  69. He is a model of leadership,

  70. a model of character,

  71. and a model of gospel commitment.

  72. And that's what I want to spend the duration of our time

  73. thinking about this morning.

  74. First, let's see that an elder is a model of faithful leadership.

  75. A model of faithful leadership.

  76. Look with me at verse 6.

  77. If anyone is above reproach,

  78. the husband of one wife and his children are believers

  79. and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination.

  80. So the first category in which a potential elder must be above reproach

  81. is in the area of leadership.

  82. And Paul lets us know that the training ground

  83. for pastoral ministry in this sense

  84. is actually in the home.

  85. To recognize a man's ability to faithfully lead the church,

  86. a congregation must examine how he loves and cares for

  87. and leads his wife and children.

  88. And the parallel passage to this is found in Paul's first letter to Timothy.

  89. He writes in 1 Timothy 3,

  90. he must manage his own household well,

  91. with all dignity,

  92. keeping his children submissive.

  93. For if someone does not know how to manage his own household,

  94. Paul says,

  95. how will he care for God's church?

  96. We stop and we think,

  97. well, that makes sense, doesn't it?

  98. If we're going to ask a man to actually give oversight

  99. to the people and the work of Lakeside Bible Church,

  100. if we're going to ask a man to shepherd the church here,

  101. shouldn't he be able to prove that he has shepherded well his family?

  102. That he has given proper oversight and faithful leadership to his wife and to his children?

  103. Yeah, it makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?

  104. Now, we need to be careful that we don't apply this passage too rigidly.

  105. Paul didn't mean that a man must be married and must have children

  106. before he could be appointed as an elder in the church.

  107. That's not what he intends to say.

  108. Paul himself was unmarried.

  109. The best we can tell, Timothy and Titus were both unmarried.

  110. And so if that's what Paul meant,

  111. he immediately disqualified himself from the very position

  112. with which he held in church leadership in these churches and as an apostle.

  113. So it's not that he means that.

  114. You don't have to be married.

  115. You don't have to have children.

  116. But he's appealing to the fact that the most common scenario,

  117. really both then and now,

  118. is that most men in the church would be married with children.

  119. And so he tells Titus,

  120. examine their leadership in the home

  121. before appointing them to such a monumental task in the church.

  122. And according to the criteria that he lists here,

  123. really two questions need to be asked about a potential elder.

  124. The first question is this,

  125. is he a faithful husband?

  126. Is he a faithful husband?

  127. Look again at verse six,

  128. if anyone is above reproach,

  129. the husband of one wife.

  130. In other words, Titus,

  131. look and see how he treats his wife.

  132. Is he faithful to her?

  133. Does he fulfill the demands of God's law

  134. in regards to being a husband?

  135. Of course, as many of you may know,

  136. it's long been debated in churches

  137. and in theological circles,

  138. what exactly Paul meant

  139. by being a husband of one wife

  140. and what marital conditions or circumstances

  141. would actually prevent a man

  142. from serving as a pastor.

  143. Let's think about that for a moment.

  144. Did Paul really mean

  145. that a man who has been married twice

  146. is indefinitely disqualified?

  147. Is that perhaps what he means here?

  148. Did he really intend to say

  149. that a previous divorce

  150. was disqualifying regardless

  151. of the particular circumstances

  152. or whether it was before

  153. or after his conversion

  154. or whether or not significant time

  155. has proven genuine repentance

  156. and restoration in the church?

  157. Does it mean that simply

  158. the act of a historical divorce

  159. in a man's life

  160. indefinitely disqualifies him

  161. from the task of serving

  162. as a pastor in the church?

  163. And I don't think so.

  164. You may disagree.

  165. That's fine.

  166. I don't think that's what he means.

  167. Very literal translation of this

  168. is a one woman man.

  169. It gives the sense of demonstrating

  170. exemplary faithfulness

  171. and commitment to one's wife.

  172. In other words,

  173. I think what Paul is concerned with

  174. is he's far more concerned

  175. about a man's marital fidelity

  176. than he is about a man's marital history.

  177. And that's not to say

  178. that marital history is irrelevant

  179. because it's not.

  180. But it isn't automatically disqualifying either.

  181. At least that's not what I think

  182. Paul means to say here.

  183. To fulfill the qualification

  184. of a one woman man

  185. has everything to do

  186. with how a man loves

  187. and treats his wife.

  188. Is he known to avoid circumstances

  189. that would cultivate sexual temptation?

  190. Or is there suspicion

  191. that he actually has little self-control

  192. and restraint in that area?

  193. That's a better question to ask

  194. what was the nature of his divorce

  195. 20 years ago.

  196. Is he faithful to the life that he has?

  197. Is he flirtatious with other women?

  198. Is he guilty of indulging in pornography?

  199. Is he careless with what he watches on TV

  200. or scrolls through on his phone?

  201. Is he a one woman man?

  202. You say, well, he's only had one wife.

  203. That doesn't mean he's a one woman man.

  204. You say, well, he's never been divorced.

  205. Well, that doesn't mean

  206. he meets the qualification.

  207. Is he actually faithful to his wife?

  208. Does he lead her well?

  209. Does he care for her?

  210. Does the way that he loves

  211. and cares and treats for his wife

  212. show that given the position

  213. and authority of an elder in a church,

  214. he's going to love and care

  215. and shepherd the church?

  216. How does he match up

  217. to the Bible's teaching for husbands?

  218. About Colossians 3,

  219. husbands love your wives

  220. and do not be harsh with them.

  221. Is he harsh with his wife?

  222. You know, if he's willing to be harsh

  223. with his wife in front of the church,

  224. can you imagine what the harshness goes to

  225. when it's not in front of the church?

  226. Remember what Peter said to elders,

  227. that you're to exercise oversight,

  228. not domineering over the people,

  229. but living as an example to them.

  230. Is he domineering?

  231. Is that really the character of his marriage?

  232. What about Ephesians 5?

  233. Husbands, love your wives

  234. as Christ loved the church,

  235. gave himself for her.

  236. In other words,

  237. does he lay down his life for his wife?

  238. Does he lay aside his own wants and desires?

  239. Does he sacrifice his own dreams

  240. in order to care for his wife,

  241. in order to love his wife,

  242. in order to lead faithfully his wife?

  243. Does he love her like Jesus loves the church?

  244. Or at least is he patterned that way?

  245. 1 Peter 3, 7,

  246. Husbands, live with your wives

  247. in an understanding way,

  248. showing honor to the woman.

  249. Does he show his wife honor?

  250. Is he grateful for her?

  251. If a man doesn't love and care for his wife,

  252. what would make anyone think

  253. that he would properly love

  254. and care for the church?

  255. Does he prove covenantal faithfulness?

  256. It's an important qualification here.

  257. Because again,

  258. the training ground for pastoral ministry,

  259. according to the way Paul lays it out

  260. to Titus and Timothy both,

  261. is the home.

  262. And so the first place Titus is to look

  263. is at a man's marriage.

  264. What does it look like?

  265. There's two ways to see that.

  266. Is he showing that he is capable

  267. of shepherding the church?

  268. That's one side of it.

  269. The other side of it is,

  270. is he living in disobedience

  271. to the Lord in this way?

  272. And if he is,

  273. don't appoint him to leadership

  274. in the church.

  275. If he's in disobedience,

  276. how is he gonna help the church?

  277. It doesn't matter how gifted he is.

  278. It doesn't matter how charismatic

  279. his personality is.

  280. It doesn't matter if he could take

  281. a startup business

  282. and make it excel

  283. beyond your imagination.

  284. That doesn't matter.

  285. What matters is,

  286. does he love his wife?

  287. Does he shepherd his home?

  288. Does he care for them?

  289. Is he obedient to the Lord?

  290. If he's not obedient

  291. to the Lord there,

  292. he's probably not gonna be obedient

  293. to the Lord in the church either.

  294. Is he a faithful husband?

  295. Secondly,

  296. is he a faithful father?

  297. Is he a faithful father?

  298. Look again with me at verse six.

  299. If anyone is above reproach,

  300. the husband of one wife

  301. and his children are believers

  302. and not open to the charge

  303. of debauchery

  304. or insubordination.

  305. Titus was to look for men

  306. who are above reproach

  307. in their parenting.

  308. And honestly,

  309. I think I wrestled

  310. with this part of the text

  311. more than any other this week,

  312. just trying to figure out

  313. what exactly did Paul

  314. intend for us

  315. to understand here.

  316. The instruction is very similar

  317. to what he wrote to Timothy,

  318. except he adds here

  319. something that he didn't

  320. tell Timothy.

  321. He says that the children

  322. of an elder

  323. must be believers.

  324. Well, it's worth noting

  325. at least that the word

  326. that's used here

  327. translated as believer

  328. can just as appropriately

  329. be translated as faithful

  330. given the context.

  331. That may even be a notation

  332. that you see right there

  333. in your Bible.

  334. But at the end of the day,

  335. it really doesn't make

  336. much of a difference.

  337. In either case,

  338. Paul still seems to be

  339. conditioning an elder's

  340. qualification on something

  341. that could possibly

  342. be out of his control.

  343. Well, how exactly

  344. are we to understand that?

  345. How are we to think about that

  346. in regards to our own church?

  347. How rigid of an application

  348. are we to apply

  349. when thinking about church leaders?

  350. There's a few thoughts

  351. I want to offer to you

  352. as we reason through it together.

  353. The first is this.

  354. I think it's significant

  355. that Paul did not apply

  356. this same restriction

  357. in the qualifications

  358. he lists in 1 Timothy 3.

  359. And so the question then is,

  360. if it was essential in Crete,

  361. why wasn't it essential

  362. in Ephesus?

  363. So does he really intend then

  364. for us to look at Crete

  365. and say, well,

  366. all of a man's children

  367. must actually be converted

  368. before he can be appointed

  369. to be an elder?

  370. I'm not sure that's exactly

  371. what he means.

  372. I think it's also unlikely

  373. that Paul intended to say

  374. that they must be converted,

  375. his children,

  376. but he doesn't apply

  377. the same restriction

  378. to the man's wife.

  379. Why would he say

  380. his children must be converted,

  381. but he doesn't actually

  382. make the same application

  383. to his spouse?

  384. And I think when it comes down to it,

  385. we have to remember

  386. that the evaluation ultimately

  387. is of the potential elder,

  388. not his family.

  389. You understand that, right?

  390. What the church

  391. and what Titus

  392. is evaluating here

  393. in this passage

  394. is the man,

  395. not his family.

  396. And so the belief

  397. and behavior

  398. of individual family members

  399. was important

  400. insofar as they reflected

  401. his faithfulness

  402. in managing

  403. his own household

  404. well.

  405. I think that's the point here,

  406. that his children

  407. need to be faithful,

  408. they need to be believers,

  409. and if they're not,

  410. the church needs to ask

  411. some serious question

  412. as to why.

  413. Is his children unbelieving

  414. because he's been

  415. a lousy parent?

  416. He's not been faithful

  417. to disciple his children

  418. in the gospel.

  419. He's not restrained

  420. the evil

  421. in his household,

  422. or does he have

  423. a wayward child

  424. because we're prone

  425. to have wayward children

  426. from time to time?

  427. And is he brokenhearted

  428. over that,

  429. and has he done

  430. everything that he can do

  431. to woo that child back

  432. using the scriptures

  433. and teaching them

  434. the truth of the gospel?

  435. I think that's the question

  436. that we need to be asking.

  437. We're evaluating the man,

  438. not each individual

  439. of his family.

  440. And I think that's a sense

  441. of what Paul has to say here.

  442. He's not looking

  443. for a problem-free home.

  444. That's not what he's looking for.

  445. Neither is he asking Titus,

  446. I think,

  447. to consider the actions

  448. of an individual

  449. member of the family

  450. as much as he is looking

  451. at the general patterns

  452. of a man's home.

  453. Brian Chappell said this,

  454. good leadership

  455. is not determined

  456. in the absence of difficulty,

  457. but in the prudent discipline

  458. and handling of problems

  459. when difficulties come.

  460. Patterns of disbelief

  461. and unruliness

  462. in a man's household

  463. should cause questions

  464. about his aptitude

  465. for church leadership.

  466. But occasional

  467. or exceptional difficulties

  468. well handled

  469. should not disqualify.

  470. Rather,

  471. they are precisely

  472. what do qualify.

  473. Turn with me

  474. to 1 Samuel 2.

  475. Now the sons of Eli

  476. were worthless men.

  477. They did not know the Lord.

  478. So if we were to translate that

  479. in the context of Titus 1,

  480. they were unbelieving

  481. and they were guilty

  482. of insubordination

  483. and debauchery.

  484. Okay, that's the dynamic

  485. of Eli's sons.

  486. Thus the sin

  487. of the young men

  488. was very great

  489. in the sight of the Lord

  490. for the men treated

  491. the offering of the Lord

  492. with contempt.

  493. So Eli's the high priest.

  494. He's got two sons

  495. that are serving as priests.

  496. He's not restraining their evil.

  497. They are worthless men.

  498. They do not know the Lord

  499. and they're cheating

  500. the people of God

  501. as the people would come

  502. to the tabernacle

  503. and they would offer

  504. their sacrifices.

  505. They're cheating them.

  506. They're acting crookedly

  507. to benefit their own selves.

  508. They're treating

  509. the offering of the Lord

  510. with contempt.

  511. Later on,

  512. when Eli actually does

  513. have a minor confrontation,

  514. he acknowledges

  515. that they're actually

  516. prostituting themselves

  517. at the entrance

  518. of the tabernacle.

  519. This is gross sin.

  520. There is no doubt

  521. that they're unbelieving

  522. and they're guilty

  523. of debauchery.

  524. And yet Eli doesn't

  525. do anything about it.

  526. He doesn't restrain

  527. their evil.

  528. He doesn't discipline them.

  529. He doesn't rid them

  530. of their place

  531. in the priesthood.

  532. He doesn't deal with them

  533. according to the law of God.

  534. In fact,

  535. if you get to

  536. a little bit later on

  537. in chapter two,

  538. you find that he gave them

  539. a good talking to.

  540. That amounts to

  541. what Eli did.

  542. He said,

  543. no, no, boys.

  544. Don't do that no more.

  545. And that was it.

  546. And then we get to chapter three

  547. and look what happens.

  548. You understand the way

  549. that the story goes.

  550. God begins to call

  551. the young man Samuel

  552. in the middle of the night.

  553. Finally, Eli realizes

  554. that it's the call of God

  555. and he tells him

  556. to listen to the Lord.

  557. Look at verse 11

  558. in chapter three.

  559. Then the Lord said to Samuel,

  560. behold,

  561. I'm about to do a thing

  562. in Israel

  563. at which the two ears

  564. of everyone who hears

  565. it will tingle.

  566. On that day,

  567. I will fulfill against Eli

  568. all that I have spoken

  569. concerning his house

  570. from beginning to end.

  571. and I declare to him

  572. that I am about

  573. to punish his house forever

  574. for the iniquity

  575. that he knew

  576. because his sons

  577. were blaspheming God

  578. and he did not

  579. restrain them.

  580. And the punishment

  581. for Eli and his house

  582. is severe.

  583. But God wasn't angry

  584. with Eli

  585. because his unbelieving sons

  586. acted like unbelieving sons.

  587. He was angry with Eli

  588. because Eli

  589. did nothing

  590. to restrain the evil

  591. and discipline them

  592. according to God's word.

  593. And I think that's the sense

  594. in which congregations

  595. are to evaluate

  596. a man's parenting

  597. because generally speaking,

  598. faithful men

  599. will produce

  600. faithful children.

  601. There will be exceptions

  602. to that rule

  603. and the congregation

  604. must weigh

  605. his ability to pastor

  606. on how he deals

  607. with those situations.

  608. But I think he's really

  609. warning against

  610. an Eli kind of situation here.

  611. You don't want a pastor

  612. who leads the church

  613. to discipline your kids

  614. but sweeps his own kids' sins

  615. under the rug.

  616. Don't want that.

  617. That's not going to be helpful.

  618. And if a man

  619. doesn't disciple

  620. his own kids,

  621. how will he ever

  622. disciple the people

  623. in the church?

  624. Is he a faithful leader?

  625. Well, how do we know?

  626. It's not based on the way

  627. he runs his business.

  628. It's based on the way

  629. that he runs his home.

  630. It's he shepherded them.

  631. A man that fails

  632. to love

  633. and lead his wife

  634. and kids

  635. must not be appointed

  636. to lead the church

  637. no matter how gifted

  638. he is.

  639. The elder will model

  640. spiritual leadership

  641. in his home

  642. showing that he can

  643. actually do it

  644. in the church as well.

  645. All right?

  646. That was the longest

  647. of the three, okay?

  648. He's a model

  649. of faithful leadership.

  650. Number two,

  651. he's a model

  652. of godly character.

  653. Back to Titus 1.

  654. He's a model

  655. of godly character.

  656. Look with me

  657. at verse 7.

  658. For an overseer

  659. as God's steward

  660. must be above reproach.

  661. He must not be arrogant

  662. or quick-tempered

  663. or a drunkard

  664. or violent

  665. or greedy for gain

  666. but hospitable,

  667. a lover of good,

  668. self-controlled,

  669. upright,

  670. holy,

  671. disciplined.

  672. Now,

  673. I want to be careful

  674. not to miss

  675. the forest

  676. for the trees here

  677. by painstakingly

  678. working through

  679. each one of these

  680. categories that Paul lists.

  681. I'm not going to do that.

  682. We'll make mention

  683. of each of them

  684. but I'm not going to

  685. spend a lot of time

  686. on them.

  687. I'll leave it to you.

  688. Really what Paul's doing here

  689. is he's painting

  690. a portrait of godliness.

  691. What does a godly man

  692. look like?

  693. The characteristics

  694. even listed here,

  695. they're representative.

  696. They're not even exhaustive.

  697. So,

  698. in other words,

  699. not everything

  700. that should be true

  701. of an elder

  702. is actually listed here

  703. in the qualifications

  704. in Titus 1

  705. nor are they listed

  706. in 1 Timothy 3.

  707. These are representative lists.

  708. For example,

  709. spiritual disciplines

  710. like prayer

  711. are absent

  712. from the list

  713. though surely

  714. we would never appoint

  715. someone to shepherd

  716. the church

  717. who is not a man

  718. of prayer.

  719. Nothing explicit

  720. is said

  721. regarding his commitment

  722. to the church

  723. and its ministries

  724. though we would never

  725. appoint someone

  726. who is half-hearted

  727. in their attendance

  728. or in their service

  729. to the church.

  730. So,

  731. we don't need to

  732. look at this list

  733. as if it is

  734. everything that should

  735. be considered

  736. but rather we're

  737. looking at it

  738. as general

  739. characterizations

  740. of what a godly man

  741. actually looks like

  742. in the church.

  743. And it's not difficult

  744. to see Paul's intention.

  745. All throughout this letter

  746. he's contrasting

  747. one type of person

  748. with another type

  749. of person.

  750. Look with me

  751. at verse 12

  752. in chapter 1.

  753. He says

  754. of one type of person

  755. one of the Cretans

  756. a prophet of their own

  757. said Cretans

  758. are always liars

  759. evil beasts

  760. lazy gluttons

  761. and then he says

  762. and this is true

  763. this testimony is true

  764. and you get the picture

  765. that as this letter

  766. is being read

  767. and the church is on Crete

  768. that nobody's being

  769. offended to this

  770. probably.

  771. They're probably

  772. sitting there

  773. saying yep

  774. he nailed it

  775. that's exactly

  776. why most of the men

  777. are in our nation.

  778. He's presenting

  779. a picture of a person

  780. isn't he?

  781. They're liars

  782. they're evil beasts

  783. they're just terrible people.

  784. Well then he gives

  785. another example

  786. in chapter 2.

  787. Look at verse 7.

  788. He tells Titus

  789. show yourself

  790. in all respects

  791. to be a model

  792. of good works

  793. and in your teaching

  794. show integrity

  795. dignity

  796. sound speech

  797. that cannot be condemned

  798. so that

  799. an opponent

  800. may be put to shame

  801. having nothing evil

  802. to say

  803. about us.

  804. So if we take

  805. the bird's eye approach

  806. through the letter

  807. of Titus

  808. we see Paul

  809. very clearly

  810. he is contrasting

  811. two characterizations

  812. here.

  813. There is the

  814. unbelieving person

  815. or at least

  816. what is reflective

  817. of an unbelieving person

  818. in this kind of behavior

  819. and here is what

  820. is reflective

  821. of a genuine believer

  822. someone who is

  823. growing in their

  824. knowledge of the Bible

  825. and being sanctified

  826. by the Spirit.

  827. And these two lists

  828. here in verses 7 and 8

  829. are the same thing.

  830. The negative traits

  831. portray

  832. a prideful

  833. selfish

  834. man

  835. known for being

  836. hot-headed

  837. and

  838. drinking too much.

  839. The positive traits

  840. on the other hand

  841. depict a humble

  842. disciplined man

  843. known for being

  844. kind

  845. and loving

  846. righteousness.

  847. He wasn't

  848. asking Titus

  849. to evaluate

  850. a man's actions

  851. in a given moment

  852. but he's considering

  853. what generally

  854. characterizes

  855. a man's life.

  856. And perfection

  857. again

  858. is not the standard.

  859. Perfection

  860. wasn't the standard

  861. for his home.

  862. Perfection

  863. isn't the standard

  864. for his character

  865. either.

  866. Otherwise

  867. we would only

  868. have one shepherd

  869. in any of our churches

  870. and it would be

  871. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  872. There would be

  873. no reason for us

  874. to appoint anyone else.

  875. The standard

  876. is above reproach.

  877. And there's a sense

  878. in which watching

  879. the way a man

  880. deals even with

  881. his own sin

  882. and failure

  883. is necessary

  884. to understand

  885. the true depths

  886. of his Christian character.

  887. Let's quickly look

  888. at the traits here.

  889. First

  890. he gives a list

  891. of negative traits.

  892. He says in verse 7

  893. that an overseer

  894. must not be

  895. arrogant

  896. literally

  897. pleasing himself.

  898. This person

  899. tends to be

  900. domineering

  901. in leadership

  902. always

  903. wanting to

  904. satisfy

  905. his own

  906. agenda

  907. regardless

  908. of the needs

  909. of anyone else.

  910. That's what

  911. characterizes

  912. his life.

  913. He says

  914. he's not to be

  915. quick tempered

  916. which is the

  917. opposite

  918. of the characteristic

  919. of God's nature

  920. which is

  921. slowness

  922. to anger.

  923. If a fruit

  924. of the spirit

  925. is temperance

  926. then

  927. quick tempered

  928. indicates

  929. a spiritless

  930. perhaps even

  931. unbelieving

  932. man.

  933. he says

  934. he's not

  935. to be

  936. a drunkard

  937. which is

  938. not merely

  939. a reference

  940. to overindulgence

  941. but the

  942. kind of

  943. behavior

  944. that's

  945. associated

  946. with

  947. drunkenness

  948. being out

  949. of control

  950. out of your

  951. mind.

  952. He says

  953. he's not

  954. to be

  955. violent

  956. which carries

  957. the idea

  958. if you have

  959. an older

  960. translation

  961. it carries

  962. the idea

  963. of being

  964. a striker

  965. or a

  966. brawler

  967. lashing

  968. out

  969. at other

  970. people

  971. in anger.

  972. In other

  973. words

  974. an elder

  975. should be

  976. able to

  977. diffuse

  978. tension

  979. rather than

  980. striking out

  981. physically

  982. or verbally

  983. at someone

  984. else.

  985. Finally

  986. he says

  987. he's not

  988. to be

  989. greedy

  990. for gain

  991. referring

  992. to an

  993. individual

  994. who

  995. desires

  996. to be

  997. rich

  998. beyond

  999. their own

  1000. needs

  1001. and is

  1002. even

  1003. willing

  1004. to use

  1005. the church

  1006. as a

  1007. means

  1008. of

  1009. personal

  1010. financial

  1011. gain.

  1012. This is

  1013. the

  1014. picture

  1015. of someone

  1016. you don't

  1017. want

  1018. to appoint.

  1019. You say

  1020. but he can

  1021. preach

  1022. it doesn't

  1023. matter.

  1024. He's only

  1025. been married

  1026. once

  1027. it doesn't

  1028. matter.

  1029. If he's

  1030. greedy

  1031. for gain

  1032. he doesn't

  1033. need to

  1034. be your

  1035. pastor.

  1036. If he's

  1037. violent

  1038. he can't

  1039. leave the

  1040. church

  1041. church.

  1042. There's

  1043. the

  1044. characterizations

  1045. here.

  1046. Then there's

  1047. the positive

  1048. traits.

  1049. He must

  1050. be

  1051. hospitable

  1052. which is

  1053. simply

  1054. living a

  1055. life that

  1056. is open

  1057. for others

  1058. to be a

  1059. part of

  1060. it.

  1061. He's not

  1062. closed

  1063. off.

  1064. This

  1065. isn't

  1066. a

  1067. jab

  1068. at

  1069. introversion.

  1070. It may

  1071. be something

  1072. that a

  1073. natural

  1074. introvert

  1075. would have

  1076. to work

  1077. harder

  1078. at than

  1079. an

  1080. extrovert

  1081. but it

  1082. doesn't

  1083. mean that

  1084. he's

  1085. just kind

  1086. of quiet

  1087. nature.

  1088. That's

  1089. not what

  1090. it means.

  1091. It means

  1092. that he's

  1093. just

  1094. open.

  1095. His

  1096. home

  1097. is open.

  1098. His

  1099. time is

  1100. not

  1101. reserved

  1102. only for

  1103. his family

  1104. and friends.

  1105. His

  1106. time is

  1107. reserved

  1108. for

  1109. everyone.

  1110. He is

  1111. welcoming

  1112. his home.

  1113. The doors

  1114. of his

  1115. home are

  1116. wide

  1117. open.

  1118. He's

  1119. hospitable

  1120. in his

  1121. nature.

  1122. Number

  1123. two,

  1124. he's a

  1125. lover

  1126. of good

  1127. which means

  1128. he's

  1129. motivated,

  1130. energized

  1131. by good

  1132. works.

  1133. elders.

  1134. The

  1135. elders should

  1136. desire to

  1137. do good

  1138. things for

  1139. others

  1140. rather than

  1141. performing out

  1142. of a sense

  1143. of obligation.

  1144. Do you see

  1145. the difference?

  1146. There's the

  1147. person who

  1148. does whatever

  1149. they're asked

  1150. to do and

  1151. then there's

  1152. a person who

  1153. loves to do

  1154. what God

  1155. has called

  1156. them to do.

  1157. A lover

  1158. of good

  1159. things,

  1160. of good

  1161. people,

  1162. and of

  1163. good

  1164. works.

  1165. A

  1166. faithful

  1167. elder

  1168. never wants

  1169. to do as

  1170. little as

  1171. possible

  1172. because

  1173. they're a

  1174. lover of

  1175. good.

  1176. Thirdly,

  1177. he's

  1178. self-controlled

  1179. which is

  1180. used all

  1181. throughout the

  1182. letter to

  1183. contrast

  1184. Christian

  1185. behavior with

  1186. culturally

  1187. accepted

  1188. practices

  1189. and ideas.

  1190. He actually

  1191. has control

  1192. of his

  1193. faculties.

  1194. He's

  1195. upright

  1196. which is

  1197. living

  1198. righteously

  1199. according to

  1200. God's

  1201. law.

  1202. He's

  1203. holy

  1204. which is

  1205. being

  1206. entirely

  1207. devoted

  1208. to God

  1209. and his

  1210. word.

  1211. He's

  1212. disciplined

  1213. which refers

  1214. more so

  1215. to

  1216. spiritual

  1217. disciplines

  1218. than

  1219. physical.

  1220. He is

  1221. committed

  1222. to a

  1223. rigorous

  1224. application

  1225. of

  1226. biblical

  1227. habits.

  1228. This is

  1229. the picture

  1230. that Paul

  1231. is

  1232. painting.

  1233. Here you

  1234. have a

  1235. man that

  1236. is a

  1237. portrait

  1238. of

  1239. godly

  1240. behavior

  1241. and here

  1242. you have

  1243. a man

  1244. that is

  1245. not.

  1246. Don't

  1247. appoint

  1248. this

  1249. man.

  1250. Look

  1251. for the

  1252. men

  1253. who

  1254. meet

  1255. these

  1256. qualifications

  1257. whose

  1258. lives

  1259. are

  1260. generally

  1261. characterized

  1262. this

  1263. way.

  1264. Again,

  1265. giftedness

  1266. isn't

  1267. irrelevant

  1268. to the

  1269. conversation

  1270. but it's

  1271. not the

  1272. primary

  1273. reason

  1274. for

  1275. recognizing

  1276. elders

  1277. either.

  1278. The

  1279. overall

  1280. message

  1281. of this

  1282. letter

  1283. is that

  1284. the true

  1285. gospel

  1286. produces

  1287. godly

  1288. living

  1289. and it

  1290. was

  1291. necessary

  1292. for

  1293. Titus

  1294. to

  1295. appoint

  1296. men

  1297. whose

  1298. lives

  1299. reflected

  1300. the

  1301. transformative

  1302. power

  1303. of

  1304. Christ

  1305. so that

  1306. as they

  1307. preached

  1308. on Sundays

  1309. to their

  1310. church

  1311. as they

  1312. evangelized

  1313. the people

  1314. on the

  1315. island

  1316. of Crete

  1317. and in

  1318. the

  1319. individual

  1320. towns

  1321. in which

  1322. they

  1323. lived

  1324. there

  1325. was

  1326. credibility

  1327. to the

  1328. message

  1329. of the

  1330. gospel

  1331. because

  1332. the

  1333. life

  1334. of the

  1335. messenger

  1336. matched

  1337. the truth

  1338. that he

  1339. was

  1340. proclaiming.

  1341. How

  1342. will the

  1343. unbelieving

  1344. world

  1345. take

  1346. seriously

  1347. a man

  1348. whose

  1349. life

  1350. doesn't

  1351. actually

  1352. characterize

  1353. what his

  1354. preaching

  1355. says

  1356. that Jesus

  1357. does?

  1358. An

  1359. elder's

  1360. example

  1361. should be

  1362. to put

  1363. Jesus

  1364. on display

  1365. for the

  1366. congregation

  1367. and also

  1368. for the

  1369. watching

  1370. world.

  1371. His

  1372. life

  1373. should be

  1374. worth

  1375. imitating

  1376. in other

  1377. words.

  1782. !

  1783. NING

  1784. !

  1785. NING

  1786. !

1787. not because of works done by us in righteousness,

1788. but according to his own mercy,

1789. by the washing of regeneration,

1790. the renewal of the Holy Spirit,

1791. whom he poured out on us richly

1792. through Jesus Christ, our savior,

1793. so that being justified by his grace,

1794. we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

1795. Now look what he says in verse eight.

  1796. This saying is trustworthy.

  1797. There's the word again.

1798. And I want you to insist on these things.

1799. What is the trustworthy word is taught?

1800. It's the gospel of Jesus.

1801. It's the gospel that every one of us are condemned in our sin.

1802. We are hopelessly lost and without God,

1803. and there's nothing we can do to earn our way back to his favor.

1804. We can do all the good things that we can try.

1805. We can do all the church services.

1806. We can give all the money that we can give.

1807. We can do our best and try our hardest,

  1808. and it won't matter.

1809. The gospel is that God, in his great love for us,

  1810. sent his only son,

1811. and then he sends his spirit to regenerate us,

1812. and those who have faith in the sacrifice

1813. and the resurrection of Jesus Christ

1814. are then given the mercy of God,

  1815. reconciliation with God,

1816. not on the basis of who they are

1817. or of what they've done,

1818. but solely according to his mercy and grace,

1819. which he lavishes on us.

  1820. And Paul says,

1821. find the men who aren't concerned

  1822. about fighting with everybody

1823. about every possible doctrinal nuance.

1824. Find the men who are wholeheartedly committed

  1825. to the gospel message

1826. and put those men leading the church

1827. so that the church will be committed

1828. wholeheartedly to the gospel message.

  1829. That's what he's saying.

1830. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word.

1831. He must hold firm to the gospel of Jesus.

1832. What he says regarding instruction

  1833. or in sound doctrine,

  1834. it's a medical term.

1835. In fact, this may be a note

1836. in the footnotes of your Bible even.

1837. It could appropriately be translated

  1838. healthy doctrine.

  1839. And his point there

1840. is that an elder's doctrinal emphasis

  1841. should produce spiritual fitness

1842. leading to external displays of godliness,

  1843. not spiritual anemia

1844. that reflects a full head

  1845. and an empty heart.

1846. There's an emphasis that we're looking for

  1847. and it's an emphasis

1848. and a commitment on the gospel first

1849. as a matter of first importance.

  1850. We all know people

1851. that are passionate about pet doctrines.

  1852. I have my own.

1853. But have you ever known someone

1854. who would love to debate you

  1855. about the Bible,

1856. but they're the last people

1857. to ever sacrifice for someone else

  1858. or evangelize the lost

1859. or give up their freedoms

1860. for the good of the church?

1861. That's not the kind of person

  1862. you're looking for.

1863. It doesn't matter how thick

1864. the books of theology are

1865. that are sitting on their desk at home.

  1866. Sometimes,

1867. this is the result of a pastor

1868. who sets the same kind of example.

  1869. And God help me

1870. if I ever start to care more

1871. about what your brain thinks

1872. and less about the gospel

1873. that actually transforms your life.

  1874. Calvin said,

1875. the pastor ought to have two voices.

1876. One for gathering the sheep

1877. and another for warding off

1878. and driving away wolves and thieves.

1879. And the scripture supplies him

1880. with the means of doing both.

1881. What is a pastor supposed to do?

1882. He's supposed to be a man of the book.

1883. He's supposed to preach the Bible

1884. to the people in his church

1885. and to courageously stand against the people

  1886. who would pervert it.

  1887. That's his point.

1888. He needs to know his Bible well

1889. and he needs to be able to teach it

1890. to believers and unbelievers alike.

1891. He needs to be committed

  1892. to the trustworthy word

1893. even if the wolves and the sheep

  1894. hate him for it.

1895. This is the one place

  1896. in the New Testament

  1897. that speaks of giftedness

  1898. regarding pastors.

  1899. They've got to demonstrate

  1900. a God-given ability

  1901. to instruct the church

1902. and to fight against those

  1903. who contradict the Bible

  1904. because they will come.

1905. And as we'll see next week

  1906. in this chapter,

  1907. they're going to come

  1908. from outside the church

1909. and then as we reflect

  1910. on Acts chapter 20,

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  1911. they're going to come

1912. from inside the church too.

1913. You need to make sure

1914. that the people leading the way

1915. are people that know the Bible

  1916. and know the truth

1917. and know what's worth dealing with

1918. and what doesn't have to be dealt with.

1919. Let me finish with this.

  1920. Tim Chester said

1921. in relation to this text,

1922. here is what you should look for

  1923. in a leader.

1924. Here is what you should aspire to

  1925. as a leader.

1926. And it's what you should pray for

  1927. regarding your leaders.

1928. When we understand that elders

  1929. are simply models

  1930. of faithful Christianity,

  1931. what we read about

  1932. in their qualifications

  1933. begins to become

  1934. much more personal,

  1935. doesn't it?

  1936. You say,

1937. I'm really tired of us

  1938. dealing with this whole

  1939. church government

  1940. and pastors

1941. and what they need to be

  1942. and all this stuff.

1943. Let's get on to something

  1944. better than this.

1945. But this is for you.

1946. At the end of the day,

  1947. outside of a giftedness

  1948. to teach

1949. at the end of the day,

1950. an elder in a church

1951. is just a model Christian.

  1952. The qualifications listed here

  1953. are not exclusive

  1954. to the elders.

  1955. They must be

1956. a part of the elders' testimony

  1957. because it's what

  1958. every Christian

  1959. should be pursuing

1960. in regards to the way

  1961. that they live

  1962. and the character

  1963. of their life.

  1964. Everything in this text

  1965. is commanded

  1966. of all believers

  1967. at other places

  1968. in the New Testament.

1969. Every single word of it.

  1970. Even the word

  1971. of commitment

  1972. to the trustworthy gospel.

  1973. Even the word

  1974. of commitment

  1975. to sound doctrine.

  1976. Even the ability

  1977. to build one another

  1978. up in Christ

  1979. through the gospel.

  1980. That belongs

  1981. to all of us.

  1982. So you don't get a

  1983. pass on this text.

  1984. All of us

1985. have to take this serious.

  1986. There's an essential element

  1987. of gifting and calling,

  1988. but that doesn't mean

  1989. everyone else

  1990. gets a pass

  1991. on godliness.

  1992. Not everyone

  1993. in the church

  1994. will be called upon

  1995. to lead it.

  1996. But every Christian

  1997. should live a life

  1998. that is qualified

  1999. for it.

  2000. So ask yourself

  2001. the same question

  2002. that you might

  2003. would ask a potential

  2004. elder in our church.

2005. Do you love your wife?

2006. Are you faithful to her?

  2007. Like really faithful.

  2008. I know your marriage

  2009. has all the appearances

  2010. of faithfulness,

  2011. but really when it

  2012. comes down to it,

  2013. are you really

  2014. a one woman man

  2015. or is your mind

  2016. all over the place

2017. when it comes to women?

  2018. Are you discipling

  2019. your kids?

  2020. Are you restraining

  2021. the evil?

  2022. Are you disciplining

  2023. your young kids?

  2024. Are you restraining

2025. the evil of your older kids?

  2026. Are you keeping

2027. the gospel in front of them?

  2028. If someone were

  2029. to characterize your life,

  2030. would you fit more

  2031. like the Cretans

  2032. on Monday to Saturday

  2033. or would you look

  2034. more like what

  2035. Paul is encouraging

  2036. Titus to be?

  2037. What about the word?

2038. Do you care about it?

  2039. Are you faithfully

  2040. studying the Bible?

  2041. Are you spending

  2042. time growing

  2043. in your knowledge

  2044. and in your prayer

  2045. and trusting

  2046. the Holy Spirit

  2047. to shape your life

2048. the way that he sees fit?

  2049. Those things

2050. don't just apply to me

  2051. or to anyone else

2052. who may serve this church.

2053. It applies to each one of us

  2054. because we all belong

  2055. to Christ

2056. and that is the thing

2057. that he has called us

  2058. to be.

  2059. Faithful believers,

  2060. faithful Christians.

  2061. And then together

  2062. as a church,

  2063. we need to keep

  2064. our eye out

  2065. for those who

  2066. demonstrate the ability

  2067. to faithfully shepherd

  2068. our congregation.

  2069. because as we saw

  2070. last week,

  2071. it's an essential role

  2072. in the church

  2073. and it's a role

2074. that at least in part

  2075. the congregation

  2076. is responsible for.

2077. So watch for those men

  2078. in our church.

  2079. Encourage those men

  2080. in our church.

  2081. Confront those men

  2082. in our church

  2083. if necessary.

  2084. Build one another

  2085. up in Christ.

  2086. Thank you.
