  1. The truth is that this passage is at the very heart of everything that Paul is communicating

  2. to Titus and to these believers in Crete.

  3. It is, in one sense, it is the sound doctrine with which Christian behavior is to accord.

  4. We remember that from the very first verse of this chapter.

  5. Just put your eye on it in chapter 2 and verse 1.

  6. But as for you, Paul says, teach what accords with sound doctrine.

  7. The behaviors, the mindsets, the attitudes, the things that harmonize with sound doctrine.

  8. When we get to verses 11 through 14, this is essentially the sound doctrine with which

  9. our behavior and our lifestyles are to be in harmony with.

  10. And what he gives is a concise explanation of the gospel of Jesus.

  11. And the importance of teaching it as the foundation for practical instruction cannot be overstated.

  12. Consider this from Graham Goldsworthy.

  13. He wrote,

  14. To say what we should be or do and not link it with a clear exposition of what God has done about our failure

  15. is to reject the grace of God.

  16. And it is to lead people to lust after self-help and self-improvement in a way that to call a spade a spade is godless.

  17. Do you see what he's saying there?

  18. For us to give exhortation and practical instruction about what people should be and what people should do,

  19. but not to immediately accompany that exhortation with an exposition of the gospel

  20. is to actually remove grace from the equation, and it is to preach a works salvation.

  21. If we think that, think of Christian conduct or religious practice,

  22. the things that we're doing this morning even in our gathered worship,

  23. if we think of those things apart from the gospel of Jesus,

  24. we will inevitably labor to go through our list of do's and don'ts,

  25. either in hopes of earning God's favor or in fear of losing it.

  26. If it's not about the gospel, if it's really about fulfilling our list and doing our things,

  27. if we're living in fear that we don't have God's favor and we need to get it,

  28. or we're living in fear that we have it but we might lose it,

  29. then we've missed the gospel.

  30. And think about this in relation to our evangelism and our efforts at cultural engagement.

  31. If our confrontations of sin and our calls for people to repent

  32. are not immediately linked with what Christ has accomplished through his death and resurrection,

  33. we are preaching a message of behavior modification, moralism.

  34. We are not preaching a gospel of grace.

  35. And if we go through and we're witnessing to people or maybe what we do in the influences that we have

  36. through social media or social engagement in some other way,

  37. and some of us, we're very faithful to say what everybody's doing wrong,

  38. that you are a bad person.

  39. But how many of us are actually faithful to immediately say,

  40. but Christ is good,

  41. and he has come to redeem you from this

  42. and demonstrate the glories of the gospel,

  43. not just the depravity of the world in which we live.

  44. If we don't immediately pair it with the gospel,

  45. immediately pair it with the glories of Christ,

  46. then we've gone wrong.

  47. And we're not actually preaching a gospel.

  48. We're preaching people into a different form of bondage,

  49. moralism.

  50. So it's no surprise then that when Paul gets to the end of these exhortations,

  51. he immediately grounds the entire letter in the gospel message.

  52. And the spring from which this saving gospel burst forth off of this page in verse 11

  53. is the limitless grace of God.

  54. Biblical grace is God's favor toward undeserving sinners.

  55. In the simplest way, we typically define it as unmerited favor.

  56. But in a biblical sense,

  57. it is God's unmerited favor toward undeserving sinners.

  58. But the grace of God is not some abstract idea

  59. that's kind of floating around out there,

  60. and we just hope that at some point along the way,

  61. we grasp it.

  62. No, that's not what it is.

  63. Paul says in verse 11 that the grace of God has appeared.

  64. It is a tangible thing that has been made visible.

  65. To us.

  66. It's not just some kind of idea.

  67. He brings it in concrete terms.

  68. It has appeared to us.

  69. And this is an interesting word.

  70. It's the word from which we get epiphany.

  71. It means a sudden manifestation or a sudden appearance of something.

  72. And what Paul intends to say here is that the grace of God

  73. has been manifested, made visible in a person.

  74. And a person.

  75. It's not an idea.

  76. The grace of God is a person.

  77. And that person is Jesus Christ.

  78. In other words, if you want to see and understand God's favor

  79. toward undeserving sinners,

  80. look at Jesus.

  81. He is God's grace personified.

  82. He is God's grace manifested to us and manifested for us.

  83. And his gospel, this gospel of grace,

  84. is the proper motivation and focus of Christian belief and behavior.

  85. All of the things that Paul says in chapter 2,

  86. it's not about fashioning a group of people

  87. to live according to his personal preference.

  88. That's not what Paul is commanding these people to do.

  89. He is commanding them to live in the grace of God.

  90. And if we are to live in the grace of God,

  91. it's going to radically affect the way that our lives look

  92. and the decisions that we make.

  93. So let's walk through the verses together

  94. and examine this glorious gospel of grace.

  95. The first thing I'd like to point out to you

  96. is the work of God's grace.

  97. The work of God's grace.

  98. Look with me again at verse 11.

  99. For the grace of God has appeared,

  100. bringing salvation for all people,

  101. training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions,

  102. and to live self-controlled, upright,

  103. godly lives in the present age.

  104. We've already established that the grace of God

  105. has been manifested in a person

  106. and in the work of Jesus Christ.

  107. It's not just a theological concept.

  108. It's a person.

  109. But what does the grace of God through Jesus accomplish?

  110. What does it actually do for us?

  111. And I think Paul gives two dynamics of God's grace here

  112. that we need to see.

  113. The first thing that he says is this.

  114. God's grace saves sinners.

  115. God's grace saves sinners.

  116. Verse 11.

  117. For the grace of God has appeared,

  118. bringing salvation for all people.

  119. Jesus has come, and with him he has brought salvation for us.

  120. Let's make sure we understand this in the appropriate way.

  121. This is not a promise that all people will ultimately be saved.

  122. That's not what Paul means to say here.

  123. That's universalism.

  124. That's a damning doctrine.

  125. We don't need to follow that.

  126. That's not what the Bible teaches us.

  127. That's not what Paul is teaching here.

  128. The Bible is actually very clear that while many people receive God's mercy,

  129. many will also face his judgment.

  130. And God's mercy and God's judgment both are eternal.

  131. Consider Matthew chapter 25 and verse 46.

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  132. Jesus himself says,

  133. All of these, those who do not follow him,

  134. those who do not live this gospel of grace,

  135. all of these will go into eternal punishment,

  136. but the righteous into eternal life.

  137. There's a distinction, clearly, in the New Testament.

  138. Some people will receive eternal life.

  139. Some people will receive eternal hell.

  140. So Paul can't be saying in Titus chapter 2

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  141. that all people will ultimately be saved.

  142. That's not his point.

  143. Consider Revelation chapter 21.

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  144. When we get to the very end in this vision that John has of heaven,

  145. the revelation of Christ,

  146. he says,

  147. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable,

  148. murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, all liars,

  149. their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur,

  150. which is the second death.

  151. Paul's not saying that all people will ultimately be saved.

  152. So what then does this verse actually mean?

  153. What does it mean that God has brought salvation for all people?

  154. Well, think about the immediate context here.

  155. What has he just said in verses 9 and 10?

  156. He's addressed slaves in the church.

  157. Slaves who have been converted,

  158. they belong to the church in the process of instructing them here.

  159. He declares that Jesus has brought salvation for all people.

  160. He means that no person is excluded from salvation

  161. on the basis of their race or their gender or their nationality

  162. or their social status.

  163. There is nothing about you that is deserving of God's grace

  164. and there is nothing about you that excludes you from God's grace.

  165. That's his point.

  166. That the grace of God has appeared in Christ

  167. and he has brought salvation for all people.

  168. For all people.

  169. And while Christ's atonement is applied particularly to those who believe,

  170. it is sufficient for the entire human race,

  171. which is what allows for Jesus to give a universal call to believe the gospel.

  172. So in other words, not everyone will be saved,

  173. but the invitation to receive eternal salvation through Jesus extends to everyone.

  174. It extends to the whole world.

  175. So Jesus says, go.

  176. Go and preach the gospel.

  177. He says, come to me all who are burdened and heavy laden

  178. and I will give you rest.

  179. Paul writes to Timothy in 1 Timothy chapter 2 and verse 4.

    1 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  180. He said, God desires all people to be saved

  181. and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

  182. All people.

  183. So if God desires all people to be saved

  184. and Jesus's atonement is sufficient for the whole human race,

  185. then this eternal salvation is offered to you.

  186. And it's offered to me.

  187. On the cross, Jesus bears the wrath of God against sinners.

  188. And by his resurrection, God proclaims,

  189. I have received with satisfaction, complete satisfaction,

  190. the sacrifice of Jesus on behalf of sinners.

  191. So what then does God's grace accomplish?

  192. It brings salvation to all who believe and follow Christ.

  193. Ephesians chapter 2, Paul makes it clear.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  194. For by grace, you have been saved through faith.

  195. And this is not your own doing.

  196. It's the gift of God.

  197. Not a result of works, so that none of us may boast.

  198. The work of God's grace, the first thing it does,

  199. God's grace saves sinners.

  200. But then, notice in verse 12,

  201. God's grace transforms sinners.

  202. God's grace transforms sinners.

  203. Look again at verse 12.

  204. Training us to renounce ungodliness

  205. and worldly passions,

  206. to live self-controlled, upright,

  207. godly lives in the present age.

  208. Training us.

  209. What's the subject of the verse?

  210. The subject of the sentence?

  211. The grace of God.

  212. The grace of God brings salvation.

  213. The grace of God trains us

  214. to do certain things,

  215. to live in righteousness.

  216. In fact, the gospel itself,

  217. this is the point,

  218. the gospel itself teaches us

  219. to renounce ungodliness

  220. and pursue godly lives instead.

  221. Instead, he says,

  222. renounce ungodliness

  223. and worldly passions,

  224. which is an interesting term here.

  225. Because both of these words,

  226. on their own,

  227. are morally neutral.

  228. We could say desires or passions.

  229. Well, passions and desires,

  230. on its own,

  231. are not inherently immoral

  232. or moral things.

  233. They're just passions.

  234. The world,

  235. on its own,

  236. is not a moral thing.

  237. It is a thing.

  238. It is a thing that exists.

  239. But when the Bible

  240. brings these two things together,

  241. worldly passions,

  242. it gives it a significant moral weight,

  243. which refers to the desires

  244. that are entirely centered

  245. on the systemic thinking

  246. of a fallen world,

  247. a world that is in rebellion against God.

  248. When Paul says worldly passions,

  249. he's talking about a mindset

  250. that is focused entirely

  251. in the way

  252. that a rebellious world is focused.

  253. So that the decisions

  254. a person with worldly passions makes,

  255. the decisions that they make,

  256. the life that they live,

  257. is really motivated

  258. by what they see in the world

  259. rather than what they see in God.

  260. We belong to a fallen world,

  261. a world that is apart from God.

  262. Yet, we are responsible

  263. to fulfill God's purposes

  264. and desires for our lives.

  265. But on our own,

  266. we cannot possibly do this.

  267. It's not possible.

  268. But through the salvation

  269. of God's grace,

  270. God transforms our affections.

  271. He gives us a new heart.

  272. This is what God does for us.

  273. This is his work.

  274. He takes our greatest desires,

  275. which are fixed on self

  276. and on pleasure

  277. and on happiness

  278. and on worldly passions,

  279. and he transforms them.

  280. So now, in Christ,

  281. our greatest passion,

  282. our greatest desire

  283. is to please God.

  284. God.

  285. So that the grace of God

  286. then trains us.

  287. It actively disciplines.

  288. It teaches us

  289. to renounce those worldly passions,

  290. to say no to those things

  291. in order to live self-controlled

  292. and upright and godly.

  293. Brian Chappell said,

  294. by adding the word godly

  295. to the ways grace teaches us to live,

  296. the apostle reminds us

  297. that the Christian life

  298. is one of dependence on God.

  299. Godliness is not a consequence

  300. of human resolution

  301. or willpower.

  302. It is a relationship with God

  303. that results in a life

  304. that is honoring to God.

  305. You see, it's not about

  306. what you just want to do

  307. and willing yourself into this.

  308. It begins with knowing God.

  309. And as we know God,

  310. the gospel itself transforms us

  311. and it trains us

  312. to pursue him

  313. and to pursue his desires

  314. for our lives.

  315. You see how incredible this is?

  316. God doesn't save us

  317. and then leave us on our own

  318. to figure the rest of it out.

  319. He saves us

  320. by the power of his grace

  321. and he actively transforms us

  322. by the power of his grace.

  323. Philippians chapter one

  324. or, excuse me,

  325. Philippians chapter two,

  326. we are his workmanship.

  327. He is working in us.

  328. Created in Christ Jesus

  329. for good works.

  330. What are good works?

  331. It is the things that honor him.

  332. It is the things that glorify him.

  333. And those who truly know Christ

  334. will willfully pursue

  335. this transforming work

  336. out of love

  337. for what God has done for them

  338. in Jesus.

  339. So what does the grace of God

  340. actually do?

  341. Well, it saves sinners

  342. and then it transforms them.

  343. And the sequence here

  344. is crucial.

  345. God doesn't train us

  346. in godliness

  347. so that we might earn

  348. his favor in salvation.

  349. No, the order here

  350. is absolutely critical.

  351. He saves us by his grace.

  352. Then he transforms us

  353. from the inside out.

  354. In other words,

  355. our motivation

  356. for godliness

  357. is not to earn God's favor,

  358. but it is in recognition

  359. that in Christ

  360. we have already received

  361. God's gracious favor.

  362. That's the work

  363. of God's grace.

  364. Secondly,

  365. I want you to see

  366. the hope of God's grace.

  367. The hope of God's grace.

  368. Verse 13,

  369. waiting for our blessed hope,

  370. the appearing of the glory

  371. of our great God

  372. and Savior,

  373. Jesus Christ.

  374. Well, set your eyes

  375. at the very end

  376. of verse 12 again.

  377. At the end of verse 12,

  378. Paul says,

  379. believers are to live godly

  380. in the present age.

  381. He's not simply referring

  382. to a particular

  383. historical moment.

  384. That's not what he means

  385. by that.

  386. That's not excluded,

  387. but it's not really

  388. what he intends to say.

  389. He's speaking

  390. of a unique time frame

  391. in God's plan

  392. of redemption.

  393. When we get

  394. to verse 13 here,

  395. we get more clarity

  396. as to what he's

  397. actually saying.

  398. And he uses this word

  399. appearing again.

  400. Do you see that?

  401. Look at verse 13.

  402. Waiting for our blessed hope,

  403. the appearing

  404. of the glory

  405. of our great God

  406. and Savior,

  407. Jesus Christ.

  408. Just as God's grace

  409. was manifested

  410. in Jesus' first coming,

  411. so will it again

  412. be manifested

  413. in the Lord's

  414. second coming.

  415. The present age then

  416. is this time frame

  417. between the two things.

  418. The present age

  419. is the time frame

  420. between Jesus'

  421. first appearance

  422. and Jesus'

  423. second appearance.

  424. In his first appearance

  425. in verse 11,

  426. Jesus came

  427. and the glory

  428. that he had

  429. as being God,

  430. the Son of God,

  431. was veiled.

  432. That's why people

  433. were so confused

  434. by him.

  435. That's why the disciples

  436. were so blown away

  437. on the Mount

  438. of Transfiguration.

  439. They've seen this man,

  440. powerful man,

  441. but this man,

  442. but then all of a sudden

  443. on the Mount

  444. of Transfiguration,

  445. they get a glimpse

  446. of his glory,

  447. his glorified state.

  448. So when he first comes,

  449. the glory is veiled,

  450. but when he comes

  451. the next time,

  452. Paul says right here,

  453. it will be in full display

  454. of the glory

  455. of our great God

  456. and Savior,

  457. Jesus Christ.

  458. Jesus is coming again

  459. and it's going

  460. to be magnificent.

  461. It's going to be

  462. a magnificent appearance

  463. of God's grace.

  464. And Paul's point

  465. is that our lives now

  466. in the present age

  467. should reflect

  468. a hopeful expectation

  469. of this return.

  470. And we immediately

  471. see the past,

  472. present,

  473. and future realities

  474. of salvation here.

  475. The past reality

  476. of salvation,

  477. we have been saved.

  478. That's verse 11.

  479. The grace of God

  480. has appeared

  481. bringing salvation.

  482. At some point,

  483. if you know Christ,

  484. at some point,

  485. the regenerative work

  486. of the Holy Spirit

  487. has transformed your life

  488. and you are saved.

  489. Past tense.

  490. You have been saved.

  491. That's verse 11.

  492. But then we see

  493. the present tense.

  494. That's verse 12.

  495. We are being saved.

  496. He is actively training us,

  497. disciplining us,

  498. fashioning us

  499. to live a life

  500. that is worthy

  501. of the gospel.

  502. We are being saved.

  503. But then there's

  504. this future salvation,

  505. the future dynamic.

  506. We will be saved.

  507. That's verse 13.

  508. That right now,

  509. as we are being trained

  510. by God's grace,

  511. we longingly await

  512. our future salvation,

  513. that glorified state.

  514. We taught the kids

  515. about this on Thursday night

  516. and it was in conjunction

  517. with the dynamic

  518. of our security in Christ

  519. and in salvation.

  520. But a big part of it

  521. was the benefits

  522. of the glorified state,

  523. a new body,

  524. whose back

  525. doesn't get thrown out,

  526. who can lay down

  527. and breathe just fine,

  528. who doesn't have to spend

  529. a week in the hospital

  530. because of congestive

  531. heart failure.

  532. There's no more sickness there.

  533. There's no more sin.

  534. There's no more heartache.

  535. There's no more sadness.

  536. We long for that.

  537. Paul tells us

  538. in the book of Romans

  539. that the whole creation

  540. groans for it.

  541. We will be saved.

  542. That's what Paul's

  543. getting at here.

  544. And in the meantime,

  545. in this present age,

  546. our lives should reflect

  547. what we know

  548. will be true

  549. in that moment.

  550. And he calls it

  551. our blessed hope.

  552. Of course,

  553. biblical hope

  554. is not a wish.

  555. It is a certain expectation

  556. that God will do

  557. what God has promised

  558. he will do.

  559. And Christians

  560. can rejoice

  561. in hope

  562. of Christ's return

  563. because the scriptures

  564. guarantee

  565. our future glorification.

  566. All those things

  567. that I just mentioned.

  568. He guarantees it

  569. in Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8:30

  570. verse 30.

  571. Those whom he predestined,

  572. he also called.

  573. And those whom he called,

  574. he also justified.

  575. And those whom he justifies,

  576. he will glorify.

  577. It's a guarantee

  578. of God's word.

  579. It's a guarantee

  580. of God's grace.

  581. This is what we will be.

  582. Philippians 1, 6.

  583. I'm sure of this,

  584. Paul says,

  585. that he who began

  586. a good work in you

  587. will bring it

  588. to completion

  589. at the day

  590. of Jesus Christ.

  591. Now it is this certain

  592. expectation

  593. of Christ's return

  594. and the benefits

  595. of what awaits us

  596. in the glorified state

  597. that motivates

  598. and informs

  599. our pursuit

  600. of godliness now.

  601. And I want to show you

  602. a passage

  603. that makes this clear.

  604. In 1 John chapter 3,

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  605. it's on the screen

  606. if you want to follow along

  607. or you can turn to it

  608. in your Bible.

  609. In 1 John chapter 3,

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  610. John says,

  611. beloved,

  612. we are God's children now.

  613. And what we will be,

  614. that is in the glorified state,

  615. what we will be,

  616. has not yet appeared.

  617. But we know that

  618. when he appears,

  619. we shall be like him

  620. because we shall see him

  621. as he is.

  622. So John is setting us up

  623. for this future expectation.

  624. This is what we will be

  625. in heaven.

  626. We are going to be like Christ.

  627. We are going to be fashioned

  628. after him.

  629. Now look what he says

  630. in verse 3.

  631. And everyone

  632. who thus hopes,

  633. everyone who is certain

  634. of this reality,

  635. purifies himself.

  636. Why?

  637. Because he sees

  638. the purity

  639. of Christ.

  640. The hope of God's grace

  641. is such

  642. that it informs

  643. and motivates

  644. our godliness

  645. because as we keep

  646. our eyes set on heaven

  647. and we keep our focus

  648. set on Christ,

  649. we see his purity

  650. and we see his loveliness

  651. and we see his glory

  652. and it makes us

  653. want to purify ourselves

  654. and pursue

  655. that glory

  656. which will be ours

  657. in eternity.

  658. Understanding the fullness

  659. of the gospel

  660. means recognizing

  661. that God

  662. will finally

  663. transform us.

  664. and the word

  665. that John uses

  666. for this

  667. is pure.

  668. Those who have been

  669. saved by God's grace

  670. and are being

  671. transformed

  672. by God's grace

  673. should desire

  674. to exemplify

  675. this purity

  676. in the present

  677. age.

  678. And once again,

  679. the truth

  680. of the gospel

  681. of grace

  682. drives us

  683. to godliness.

  684. thirdly,

  685. I want you to see

  686. the agent

  687. of grace.

  688. We've seen

  689. the work of grace,

  690. what grace does.

  691. We've seen

  692. the hope of grace.

  693. We set our eyes

  694. on heaven

  695. and we live

  696. as if we are

  697. there already.

  698. Okay?

  699. Number three,

  700. the agent of grace.

  701. Verse 14.

  702. Perhaps the most

  703. important verse

  704. of all of it.

  705. Who gave himself

  706. for us

  707. to redeem us

  708. from all lawlessness

  709. and to purify

  710. for himself

  711. a people

  712. for his own

  713. possession

  714. who are zealous

  715. for good works.

  716. This is the heart

  717. of the whole discussion.

  718. At the center

  719. of the gospel

  720. is the self-sacrifice

  721. of God's son

  722. for undeserving

  723. sinners.

  724. That's the grace

  725. of God.

  726. That's the grace

  727. of God

  728. that has appeared.

  729. the self-sacrifice

  730. of Jesus

  731. for sinners.

  732. He's provided

  733. eternal salvation

  734. according to this verse

  735. by giving himself

  736. for us.

  737. But how is it

  738. that Jesus

  739. gave himself?

  740. Philippians chapter 2

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  741. helps us with this.

  742. The men studied this

  743. on Wednesday morning

  744. at Chick-fil-A.

  745. It says,

  746. though he was

  747. in the form of God,

  748. he did not account

  749. equality with God

  750. a thing to be grasped,

  751. but he emptied himself,

  752. taking on the form

  753. of a servant,

  754. being born

  755. in the likeness

  756. of men,

  757. and being found

  758. in human form,

  759. he humbled himself

  760. by becoming obedient

  761. to the point of death,

  762. even death

  763. on a cross.

  764. So first,

  765. Jesus gives himself

  766. by leaving the throne

  767. of heaven

  768. to become a man.

  769. he condescends

  770. to us.

  771. Then the sinless

  772. son of God

  773. gave himself

  774. by submitting

  775. to death

  776. on a cross,

  777. a criminal's execution

  778. for a sinlessly

  779. perfect man.

  780. The one who knew

  781. no sin

  782. bore God's wrath

  783. against sinners

  784. so that they could

  785. then know

  786. his righteousness.

  787. righteousness.

  788. That's 2 Corinthians 5.

  789. For our sake

  790. he made him

  791. to be sin

  792. who knew no sin

  793. so that in him

  794. we might become

  795. the righteousness

  796. of God.

  797. And why did he

  798. give himself?

  799. That's how he gave himself.

  800. Why did he give himself?

  801. What was Jesus'

  802. substitutionary death

  803. meant to accomplish?

  804. Well, Paul tells us

  805. right here in the verse.

  806. He gives us

  807. three reasons.

  808. First,

  809. he gives himself

  810. to rescue us

  811. from sin.

  812. To rescue us.

  813. He says he gave himself

  814. to redeem us

  815. from all lawlessness.

  816. Lawlessness,

  817. according to John,

  818. says lawlessness

  819. is sin.

  820. Redemption here,

  821. redeem,

  822. it means to release

  823. on receipt

  824. of ransom.

  825. He redeems us

  826. in his death

  827. from sin,

  828. from the bondage

  829. of sin

  830. and from

  831. our deadness

  832. in sin.

  833. The penalty of sin.

  834. But he doesn't just

  835. stop at the rescue.

  836. That's the thing.

  837. See, this is where

  838. a lot of people

  839. get confused.

  840. They come to Christ

  841. expecting the rescue,

  842. but they stop there.

  843. Look at what he also says.

  844. He gave himself

  845. to rescue us from sin,

  846. but he gave himself

  847. to cleanse us

  848. of sin.

  849. Redeem us

  850. from all lawlessness

  851. and to

  852. purify

  853. us.

  854. You see,

  855. Jesus is not content

  856. to leave us

  857. in sin.

  858. It's not as if

  859. he saves us

  860. and he says,

  861. all right,

  862. you're good.

  863. Go on.

  864. No.

  865. He saves us,

  866. he keeps us,

  867. he rescues us,

  868. and then he cleans us.

  869. I remember when

  870. Julie gave birth

  871. to both the girls.

  872. It's bizarre.

  873. Those of you

  874. who have been there

  875. know,

  876. most people say

  877. it's a beautiful thing.

  878. It's not a beautiful thing.

  879. It's a bizarre thing.

  880. And I remember

  881. both girls

  882. when they emerge,

  883. all of these people

  884. gather around

  885. and they pick up

  886. the girls.

  887. And what's the first

  888. thing that they do?

  889. They put them

  890. on Julie's chest.

  891. They say,

  892. hey to mom,

  893. and then they rip her

  894. right back out of her hands.

  895. And they go over

  896. to the sink

  897. or whatever the thing is

  898. and they weigh her

  899. and then they get that thing

  900. and they start

  901. to scrub her down,

  902. right?

  903. They're not content

  904. to leave them

  905. in the mess.

  906. They say,

  907. this is what Jesus does.

  908. You see,

  909. at the point

  910. that he saves us,

  911. it's like being born.

  912. In fact,

  913. that's exactly

  914. what Jesus says.

  915. We receive

  916. a new birth,

  917. regeneration.

  918. And Jesus doesn't

  919. come to that moment

  920. of birth

  921. and then just kind of

  922. throw us out there

  923. and say,

  924. hope things work out

  925. for you.

  926. No.

  927. No,

  928. he takes us

  929. and he takes us

  930. and he loves on us

  931. and he gives us attention

  932. and he cleans us.

  933. He washes us.

  934. He purifies us.

  935. He cleanses us.

  936. And then he says,

  937. not only does he rescue us

  938. from sin,

  939. he gave himself

  940. to cleanse us

  941. but then to make us

  942. his own.

  943. To make us his own.

  944. A people

  945. for his own

  946. possession

  947. who are zealous

  948. for good works.

  949. Here's the transformation

  950. again.

  951. Paul says to another church,

  952. we are not our own.

  953. We have been bought

  954. with a price

  955. which pushes against

  956. the common mindset

  957. not only in our culture

  958. but honestly I think

  959. in a lot of cultural

  960. Christian circles.

  961. That says,

  962. yeah,

  963. I follow Jesus

  964. but this is my life.

  965. This is my body

  966. and this is my money

  967. and this is my stuff

  968. and I'm going to do it

  969. the way that I want to do it.

  970. Paul says,

  971. no,

  972. that's not actually true.

  973. You are not your own.

  974. If you know Christ,

  975. you belong to him.

  976. He's bought you.

  977. There's a lot of misconceptions

  978. about the purpose

  979. of God's grace

  980. and salvation.

  981. There's a lot of

  982. cultural Christians

  983. who identify

  984. as with Christianity

  985. in some sense

  986. out of,

  987. to gain what

  988. MacArthur says

  989. is fire insurance.

  990. they're not really

  991. interested in being

  992. rescued from sin

  993. or knowing Christ.

  994. They just come to a point

  995. where if there is a hell,

  996. maybe this is the way

  997. that I can possibly escape it.

  998. So they do whatever

  999. the church says

1000. that they're supposed to do.

  1001. They get baptized

  1002. or they attend

  1003. or they volunteer.

  1004. They do the stuff

  1005. but there's really,

  1006. there's nothing about Christ

  1007. that's at work

  1008. in their life.

  1009. And they think grace

  1010. is just there

  1011. so that I don't have

  1012. to go to hell.

  1013. And they've misunderstood grace.

  1014. There's others

  1015. who maybe don't take

  1016. quite that position

  1017. but in their minds

  1018. they think,

  1019. well,

1020. grace just makes me free now.

  1021. It makes me free

1022. so that I can kind of

  1023. live the way

1024. that I want to live

  1025. without consequence.

  1026. And there's a lot

  1027. of Christians

  1028. that probably

  1029. you even know yourself,

1030. maybe you're one of them,

1031. that lives in that kind

  1032. of state of mind

  1033. or at least practically.

  1034. There's even some

  1035. genuine Christians

  1036. that can be

  1037. carelessly indifferent

  1038. to behaviors

  1039. that dishonor God.

  1040. But the Bible

  1041. directly confronts

  1042. these attitudes.

  1043. Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  1044. You know the passage.

  1045. Paul says,

  1046. how can we

  1047. who died to sin

  1048. still live in it?

  1049. Do you not know

  1050. that all of us

  1051. who have been baptized

  1052. into Christ

  1053. were baptized

  1054. into his death?

  1055. We were buried,

  1056. therefore,

  1057. with him by baptism

  1058. into death

  1059. in order that

  1060. as Christ was raised

  1061. from the dead,

  1062. we too might walk

  1063. in newness of life.

  1064. That means there's

  1065. a transformation

  1066. that has now happened.

  1067. It's not God

1068. has given me his grace.

1069. I don't have to go to hell.

1070. I can just keep doing

  1071. my thing here

  1072. and just feel comfortable

  1073. about it.

  1074. You've misunderstood grace.

1075. Paul goes on to say,

  1076. let not sin,

  1077. therefore,

1078. reign in your mortal body

  1079. to make you

  1080. obey its passions.

  1081. Do not present

  1082. your members to sin

  1083. as instruments

  1084. for unrighteousness,

  1085. but present yourselves

  1086. to God

1087. as those who have been

  1088. brought from death

  1089. to life

  1090. and your members

  1091. to God

  1092. as instruments

  1093. for righteousness.

  1094. To the one

  1095. who has been gripped

  1096. by the truth

  1097. of the gospel,

  1098. they will routinely say,

  1099. I don't want

  1100. to live in sin.

  1101. Christ has saved me

  1102. from that.

  1103. I don't want

1104. to go back to it.

  1105. And think about it

1106. in terms of the instructions

  1107. Paul has given.

  1108. Hang with me,

  1109. we're almost there,

  1110. okay?

  1111. Think about it

1112. in terms of the instructions

  1113. Paul gave

1114. in the first ten verses.

  1115. Someone gripped

  1116. by the gospel says,

  1117. I do not want

1118. to live a slanderous life.

  1119. Christ saved me

  1120. from that.

  1121. I don't want

  1122. to do that.

  1123. I don't want

  1124. to live in drunkenness.

  1125. Christ saved me

  1126. from that.

  1127. I don't want

  1128. to do that.

  1129. I don't want

  1130. to live

  1131. in constant conflict

  1132. with my husband

  1133. or with my wife.

  1134. Christ saved me

  1135. from that.

  1136. I don't want

  1137. to go back

  1138. to that.

  1139. You see,

  1140. we need to evaluate

  1141. all of our conduct

  1142. on the basis

  1143. of the fact

  1144. that Christ died

  1145. to rescue

  1146. and cleanse us

  1147. from sin.

1148. I want to ask you

  1149. maybe this hypothetical

  1150. question,

  1151. maybe you were asked

1152. this as a young person

  1153. growing up.

  1154. So maybe even

  1155. the kids would need

  1156. to hear me.

1157. Give me your ear here.

  1158. If Jesus was

  1159. with you today,

  1160. physically with you,

  1161. he was spending

  1162. the day with you,

  1163. would you be

  1164. at peace

  1165. with the typical

  1166. decisions that you

  1167. make?

  1168. Or,

  1169. would a part

  1170. of the conversation

  1171. with your Lord

  1172. be,

  1173. Jared,

  1174. I was crucified

  1175. to rescue

  1176. you from that.

  1177. Why would you

  1178. do that?

  1179. Jared,

  1180. I was crucified

  1181. to redeem you

  1182. from those

  1183. words

  1184. and the sin

  1185. of your mouth.

  1186. Why would you

  1187. continue in that?

  1188. Jared,

  1189. I was crucified

  1190. to rescue you

  1191. from those things

  1192. that you're

  1193. entertaining yourself

  1194. with on the TV

  1195. and on your phone.

  1196. Why would you

  1197. do that?

  1198. And we could go

  1199. down the list.

  1200. Jesus gave

  1201. himself to

  1202. redeem us

  1203. and this

  1204. gospel of grace

  1205. literally,

  1206. it teaches us.

  1207. If you understand

  1208. the gospel,

  1209. then you understand

  1210. it's never okay

  1211. for me to sin.

  1212. I shouldn't

  1213. want to.

  1214. I shouldn't

  1215. desire it

  1216. because Christ

  1217. has died for it

  1218. and he wants

  1219. to cleanse me

  1220. from it

  1221. and one day

  1222. he will finally

  1223. cleanse me

  1224. from it

  1225. and I'm going

  1226. to live for him

  1227. now because of

  1228. what he's done

  1229. for me.

  1230. Do you remember

  1231. the question

  1232. that I asked

  1233. you at the

  1234. beginning?

  1235. What's the

  1236. why behind

  1237. the way

  1238. that you live

  1239. your life

  1240. and make

  1241. your decisions?

  1242. Why do you

  1243. do what you

  1244. do?

  1245. Why do you

  1246. say what you

  1247. say?

  1248. Why do you

  1249. enjoy what

  1250. you enjoy?

  1251. If the

  1252. dominant

  1253. motivation

  1254. of your

  1255. life

  1256. is self

  1257. fulfillment,

  1258. that is

  1259. it's my

  1260. life,

  1261. I'll do it

  1262. how I

  1263. want.

  1264. If that's

  1265. the dominant

  1266. reason in

  1267. your mind,

  1268. I don't

  1269. know that

  1270. you're a

  1271. Christian.

  1272. The call

  1273. to salvation

  1274. is a

  1275. call to

  1276. self-denial.

  1277. That's

  1278. what Jesus

  1279. says.

  1280. He says,

  1281. whoever will

  1282. come to me

  1283. will have

  1284. to deny

  1285. himself,

  1286. not pursue

  1287. himself.

  1288. The grace

  1289. of God

  1290. in salvation

  1291. transforms our

  1292. affections.

  1293. The Bible

  1294. makes that

  1295. clear and

  1296. if your

  1297. dominant

  1298. affection in

  1299. your life,

  1300. your dominant

  1301. desire is not

  1302. to please the

  1303. Lord, I

  1304. don't think

  1305. you're a

  1306. Christian,

  1307. at least

  1308. according to

  1309. the Bible.

  1310. people.

  1311. But as we

  1312. discovered in

  1313. verse 11,

  1314. God extends

  1315. this offer of

  1316. grace to

  1317. you.

  1318. Receive his

  1319. grace.

  1320. Receive the

  1321. grace in

  1322. Christ.

  1323. Let him

  1324. rescue you

  1325. from sin

  1326. and cleanse

  1327. you from it

  1328. forever.

  1329. Now that's

  1330. one way you

  1331. could answer

  1332. the question.

  1333. The other way

  1334. that some

  1335. of you may

  1336. have answered

  1337. the question

  1338. is if you

  1339. do what you

  1340. do out of

  1341. fear that

  1342. God will be

  1343. angry and

  1344. remove his

  1345. favor, I

  1346. don't think

  1347. you understand

  1348. the gospel.

  1349. Our motivation

  1350. for godliness

  1351. is not to

  1352. gain God's

  1353. favor.

  1354. It's actually

  1355. a loving,

  1356. worshipful

  1357. response to

  1358. the favor that

  1359. he's already

  1360. given us.

  1361. That's the

  1362. motivation.

  1363. Jesus said,

  1364. we read it

  1365. in Matthew

  1366. 11, Jesus

  1367. said that his

  1368. salvation would

  1369. give you rest,

  1370. not anxiety.

  1371. Rest.

  1372. And if you're

  1373. constantly living

  1374. in fear,

  1375. you're probably

  1376. not trusting

  1377. Christ.

  1378. You're probably

  1379. trusting your

  1380. ability to do

  1381. your best and

  1382. try your hardest

  1383. and do the

  1384. list of things.

  1385. And somebody's

  1386. told you, if you

  1387. fall short of

  1388. that, you're

  1389. not doing it

  1390. right.

  1391. We need to

  1392. care about

  1393. godliness.

  1394. But our

  1395. godliness is

  1396. not what

  1397. saves us.

  1398. We cling

  1399. trustingly to

  1400. the Lord

  1401. Jesus, even

  1402. when we fail,

  1403. even when we

  1404. fall.

  1405. We're grieved

  1406. by our sin.

  1407. But it should

  1408. never bring us

  1409. to a point, if

  1410. we know Christ,

  1411. and if we

  1412. understand the

  1413. gospel, it

  1414. should never

  1415. bring us to a

  1416. point that in

  1417. our sin, we're

  1418. now overwhelmed

  1419. with fear that

  1420. God's going to

  1421. take it away, that

  1422. he doesn't love

  1423. us anymore, that

  1424. he's going to

  1425. cast us out.

  1426. Remember what

  1427. Jesus said, all

  1428. that the Father

  1429. gives me will

  1430. come to me, and

  1431. whoever comes to

  1432. me, I will

  1433. never cast out.

  1434. And if you're

  1435. living in constant

  1436. fear, I think you

  1437. just don't understand

  1438. the gospel, and you

  1439. need to study the

  1440. gospel.

  1441. You need to

  1442. study these

  1443. verses.

  1444. You need to

  1445. learn the gospel

  1446. of grace, so

  1447. that you might

  1448. look to Jesus, and

  1449. then live.
