  1. The letters to 1st and 2nd Timothy and Titus, as you probably know, are popularly referred to as

  2. the pastoral epistles. But to be honest with you, that title can be a little bit misleading.

  3. It's only been popularized probably in the last 150 years to even call it that.

  4. And if we're not careful, if that's how we're thinking about these books, we'll think that

  5. they're basically irrelevant to the everyday Christian, that the purpose of them is really

  6. just to inform pastors or church leaders or to give a polity for church structures that bore us to tears

  7. and all of those kinds of things. But really, that's not what these books are. That's not at least only

  8. what they are. They're relevant for the whole church. And though portions of these letters are

  9. indeed personal, they were never intended to be private. And if you think back all the way to when

  10. we introduced this book, we talked about this a little bit. This letter to Titus was never

  11. meant to be a private letter. Titus is inspired scripture. It is inspired by God for the purpose

  12. of instructing his church, of instructing his people. And once Titus received this letter,

  13. he wouldn't have kept it to himself. It was read publicly in the churches in Crete. To the congregations

  14. of the church, it was there. This message that's given to Titus was intended for them. They were held

  15. accountable to it in the same way that Titus was held accountable to it. And then beyond that,

  16. they meticulously copied it and then distributed those copies, which is exactly why you have a copy of it

  17. today in your hand. Because the early church understood that this letter was not just personal

  18. anecdotes written to Paul's colleague. It wasn't that somebody came across it at some point and just

  19. decided, hey, this is pretty cool. We should put this into the collection of things that Paul has

  20. written and somebody eventually decided, oh, well, let's just call it scripture. That's not what this

  21. was. The early church from the earliest days understood that this was inspired scripture. So they

  22. meticulously copied it. They distributed it, understanding that this was God's instruction for his people.

  23. So its usefulness is not just limited to church leaders. That's the first thing I want you to

  24. understand before we even really dig in to this verse that is directed specifically to Titus. The

  25. title for pastoral epistles, it stems from this undercurrent of pastoral instruction that courses

  26. through all of the doctrinal and practical teaching of the letter. So in addition to Paul saying,

  27. this is the truth of the gospel, this is the truth of the gospel, and these are the behaviors that

  28. harmonize with it, Paul directed Titus and then by extension, the elders that Titus would appoint to

  29. the churches on how they could effectively shepherd the churches in their care. That's the intention of the

  30. pastoral instruction. It's not that Paul was saying, I'm just going to give this kind of

  31. a church manual to these guys that they'll follow. Now he's writing to the churches, but underneath this

  32. doctrine and these practical elements, he's telling these church leaders, this is how to incorporate these

  33. truths into the care of the church. And all of this pastoral instruction in Titus ultimately amounts to this.

  34. It amounts to an exalted view of scripture that's expressed in word-based ministry. Okay, I'm going to say

  35. that again. It amounts to an exalted view of scripture that expresses itself in word-based ministry.

  36. And verse 15 in chapter 2 makes that abundantly clear. It's a summary statement that stands on,

  37. it's on its own. That's why we're dealing with it on its own this morning. In fact, the translators of

  38. the Bible in your hand or the device in your hand, whatever it is you're using, probably even made this

  39. visibly distinct. My Bible at least, verse 15 stands on its own. It's its own paragraph.

  40. If your Bible is that way, the translators have done that intentionally so that you might understand

  41. that this verse stands on its own. It's not that it's irrelevant to the paragraph before it or the

  42. paragraph after it. It's actually incredibly relevant to those things. But the passage stands on its own,

  43. and that's how we're going to deal with it this morning. Last week, I told you that verses 11 through 14

  44. serve as the theological foundation for everything that Paul wrote to Titus.

  45. It is the clear gospel message that is the basis of everything Paul was concerned about here.

  46. Everything Paul was concerned about in all the other letters as well. It's the truth of the gospel.

  47. Well, we might consider verse 15 and the instruction that it contains to be the practical outworking

  48. of that gospel message, not only in the ministry of a pastor to the church, but in the church to one

  49. another. In our efforts at discipling one another, in our efforts at evangelism, this verse encompasses in

  50. a summary form how we are to use the gospel in ministry. In other words, here's what Paul does in

  51. verses 11 through 14. He says, here is the gospel message. And in verse 15, he says, here is what you

  52. must do with it. Here's the gospel, Titus. Here's what you must do with it. And there's three very

  53. straightforward commands given in the verse. Two of them are positive. One is negative. Christians are to

  54. speak the word of God. They are to teach it with authority and they are to prevent contempt for the

  55. gospel in those who hear them. Okay. Those are the three things we're going to look at. Speak the word,

  56. teach it with authority and prevent contempt in the hearers. First, let's look at speaking the word. At

  57. the very beginning of the verse, the first phrase, Paul says, declare these things. The word for

  58. declare here, it is laleo, is not the typical word for preaching. That's what's interesting about it

  59. here. We often would think to the famous verse in 2 Timothy, when Paul finally gets to the end of it,

  60. and he just says, preach the word, Timothy. Well, this is not the same word that he uses to Timothy.

  61. It just means to speak. Simply speak the word. Speak these things, Titus. But still, the context of the

  62. verse gives us this sense of asserting truth. Declare, proclaim, announce. And certainly, the primary

  63. task for church elders are prayer and the ministry of the word. But this ministry of the word is not

  64. limited to Sunday morning sermons. Paul's not just concerned that Titus would preach this message

  65. on the Lord's Day worship. He is intent that Titus would speak the truth of God, that he would speak

  66. these things, that he would declare them through the fullness of his ministry in Crete. So that

  67. everything pastors do, even in the administrative oversight of the church, is to have communicating

  68. the truth of God as its central focus. Just a couple of weeks ago, Shane and Andy and I sat down

  69. to work on the new budget for the budget year coming up that will begin in May. And the first thing that

  70. we did before we ever met is we rehearsed biblical principles for stewardship, biblical principles for

  71. what God expects of us. We watched a lecture about it. Why? Because everything we do, even in formatting

  72. a church budget and designating how we're going to steward the resources that God has given us,

  73. has the intention from church leadership for communicating the truth of God. It is setting a

  74. pattern of looking to God for our sole source of truth and behavior. This is the only way to really,

  75. truly shepherd God's people. That's why we say if, you know, at the end of our church covenant,

  76. we always say if at any point you move on from this place, you are covenanting that you will,

  77. as quickly as possible, join with another church who is faithful to the gospel and is faithful to

  78. the things that God says in his word. And part of that, as we're looking for a church, is finding a

  79. pastor who's consumed with the Bible, whose ministry is consumed with the word, not his own passions,

  80. not his own thoughts and opinions, but the word of God. And as a congregation, we need to make sure that

  81. we are encouraging our leaders to prioritize this word-based ministry. We want them to give the majority

  82. of their time to preaching, to counseling, to evangelizing, to discipling people in the truth.

  83. That's what God has called them to do. We need to hold them to that. You need to hold me to that.

  84. Otherwise, I cannot truly shepherd you. But I want to suggest also this morning

  85. that this priority of word-based ministry does not only belong to the leaders of the church.

  86. It belongs to every Christian, every believer. Now, I'm not talking about giftedness here. I'm not

  87. talking about the things that we would say would be the ways that God, by his spirit, gifts us to

  88. serve the church. And by all means, many of those ways are not related to speaking gifts or teaching

  89. gifts. We're not talking about giftedness. We're talking about responsibility. Every believer,

  90. every Christian is responsible for speaking truth to others in obedience to what Christ has commanded

  91. us to do. So as Paul is writing this to Titus, he is intent that pastors faithfully speak God's truth,

  92. at least in part, because all believers are to do so. And pastors are to lead the way in this evangelism

  93. and discipling and counsel. So then my responsibility at Lakeside Bible Church, my teaching in our church

  94. is to both shepherd your soul and to train you on how to shepherd the souls of others. It's not just

  95. about enlightening your mind. It's about training you to do the work of ministry yourself. This belongs to

  96. each of us. And classically, we find this spelled out in Ephesians chapter four. Paul says, and God,

  97. Christ gave shepherds and teachers, shepherd teachers, pastor teachers, to equip the saints for ministry.

  98. And what is that work of ministry? It's the building up of the body of Christ. And how does he intend for

  99. the building up of the body of the Christ to take place? By speaking truth in love, he says. We are to grow

  100. up in every way into him who is the head. And we talk about this verse all the time because it is so

  101. crucial to what we are to be as a church and how we are to behave as a church. We have a responsibility

  102. to one another. Consider Hebrews chapter three and verse 13. The writer says, exhort one another every day.

  103. He's not writing to leaders here. He's writing to the church. He says, exhort one another every day,

  104. as long as it is called today, that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

  105. Declare these things. Speak to one another these truths. We have a responsibility to it.

  106. But what exactly is it that we're commanded to declare? Paul says, declare these things. Well,

  107. that's not very helpful. What does he mean? What are the these things? Well, fundamentally,

  108. it refers to the gospel message of verses 11 through 14 and the behaviors that accord with the gospel

  109. message in verses 1 through 10. Set your eyes on verse 1 again at the beginning of chapter 2.

  110. But as for you, Titus, teach what accords with sound doctrine. Sound doctrine primarily being the gospel

  111. message. What accords with the gospel message is the behaviors that harmonize with it. In other words,

  112. we must be faithful and committed to declaring the doctrines and commandments of the word of God.

  113. You see, most of us, the struggle that we have is not speaking. It's not speaking to others.

  114. We all have a way. Even if you are the most introverted among us, you still have communication.

  115. There are ways that you interact with other people. Even if it's just with the people in your home,

  116. you're interacting, you're communicating, you're speaking. Typically, that's not our problem.

  117. We're speaking. The problem often is what is the source of that speaking? What is it that we're

  118. actually communicating to people typically? When you go to coffee with your friend who's really just

  119. going through a particular struggle in their life, be it a struggle in their marriage or a struggle

  120. with their finances or a struggle with their health, or maybe they're just down and they need

  121. some encouragement, what is it that you give them for that encouragement and that comfort?

  122. If it doesn't have anything to do with the word of God, you're not doing it right. That's the point.

  123. Declare these things. Let these things, let the word of God be on our lips and in our mouths.

  124. So much of Christian discipling seems to be absent of the clear teaching of the Bible.

  125. We want to help others, but we're not always looking to the scriptures for the answers to life,

  126. for the things that actually bring comfort, for the things that actually do lift up our hearts.

  127. Our counsel often can be saturated with emotionalism, maybe self-help ideas,

  128. but what we should continually be asking ourselves in these conversations

  129. is what does God tell us in the Bible? What does the gospel instruct us on in relation to this thing?

  130. Colossians chapter 3. I grew up, I don't know if any of you have ever even heard of this,

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  131. but I grew up going to Patch the Pirate Club. Anybody go to Patch the Pirate Club?

  132. You went to Patch the Pirate Club. That's amazing. We sail with Patch the Pirate.

  133. We should sing that on a Sunday.

  134. The club verse, I can remember my mom was the, for a few years, was the Patch the Pirate Club

  135. leader or captain, whatever it was called.

  136. And every week we would stand up and she would say, all right, sailors, club verse.

  137. Colossians 3.16 was the verse.

  138. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom,

  139. singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, giving thanks in our hearts to the Lord.

  140. That's a command to the church that Paul gives.

  141. And what is the command? Let the word of God dwell in you richly insofar as you can go to others

  142. and you can teach them and you can admonish them in wisdom, true wisdom that's founded on the word of God.

  143. And what's one of the ways that we do that most often?

  144. In our Sunday worship.

  145. As we gather together and we sing Christ, the true and better Adam, son of God and son of man,

  146. who when tempted in the garden, never yielded, never sinned.

  147. We teach one another that.

  148. There is this, Keith Getty talks about this so often, there is this dynamic in our church worship services

  149. in just the way even that we set up our seating, where we work against this instruction.

  150. I heard him talk about one time, we set up our services, and I've done it,

  151. but we set up our services where everything is focused on a platform.

  152. He said, but the sense of this verse is that maybe we set up our chairs in a circle

  153. so that as we're singing songs of the Lord, we're not singing them to a person that is leading us,

  154. we're singing them to one another.

  155. We are teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs

  156. that inform our hearts and inform our minds.

  157. And then when we go to coffee after the service and we're sitting,

  158. we're talking with our friend who's going through a particular struggle

  159. or maybe has questions about the gospel, we can say,

  160. do you remember the song that we sang today?

  161. This is what the Bible teaches about it.

  162. This is who Jesus is.

  163. This is what he has done for us.

  164. This is our responsibility, church.

  165. Declare these things.

  166. Speak these things.

  167. We are to be filled with the word of God

  168. and routinely speak this gospel to others.

  169. Whether it's the pastor in the pulpit,

  170. whether it's a parent at the dinner table,

  171. whether it's a friend at the coffee shop,

  172. our words are to be filled with God's truth,

  173. declaring these things to others.

  174. So Paul says, declare these things.

  175. Speak the word of God.

  176. Number two, he says, teach it with authority.

  177. Teach it with authority.

  178. Look at verse 15 again.

  179. Declare these things, exhort and rebuke with all authority.

  180. So the terms used in the very first phrase,

  181. declare these things, really relate to just speaking truth.

  182. But the terms of the second phrase

  183. have the nuance of instruction, personal instruction.

  184. To exhort means to entreat.

  185. It's to earnestly implore someone to do something.

  186. Julie, please let me get a milkshake today.

  187. It is to entreat.

  188. It's to plead with.

  189. In this case, it means to plead with others,

  190. to believe and obey the gospel,

  191. to obey God,

  192. to care about the Sabbath,

  193. to care about the Lord's day.

  194. To rebuke is to admonish or to correct.

  195. It's just a different form of teaching.

  196. Here it refers to correcting errant teaching

  197. and sinful behavior.

  198. Both of these actions are absolutely essential

  199. for a pastor to faithfully shepherd the church

  200. and for all Christians to evangelize

  201. and disciple one another.

  202. There's no way around it.

  203. It's not enough to merely state what the Bible says.

  204. We must plead with people to believe and obey it.

  205. Because I could come in on it one day

  206. and I could say,

  207. Jesus rose from the dead.

  208. That's important.

  209. It's true.

  210. But it's different from me coming in and saying,

  211. Jesus rose from the dead,

  212. therefore bow to him as Lord,

  213. receive him as Savior,

  214. trust in him.

  215. Do you see?

  216. There is the speaking of the word,

  217. then there's the instructing of the word,

  218. the exhortation,

  219. the rebuke.

  220. Now the third term in this phrase

  221. is really what gets at the heart of the instruction.

  222. Paul said that Titus was to plead and correct

  223. with all authority, he says.

  224. And this is where things get a little tricky for us,

  225. isn't it?

  226. Because none of us want to assume authority over other people.

  227. That is without a doubt frowned upon in our modern culture.

  228. No one likes to be told what to do.

  229. Few people like to be the ones actually telling others what to do.

  230. There are some nut jobs out there,

  231. but there's few people that actually really enjoy doing that.

  232. And yet Paul still tells us right here,

  233. he says,

  234. do this with all authority.

  235. The word is epitage.

  236. It means to issue a command,

  237. which makes it worse.

  238. It's not just that you have authority to say something,

  239. it's that he's saying,

  240. do this in such a way as you're commanding people.

  241. It's to have a commanding, authoritative tone.

  242. Not harsh, but commanding.

  243. But the question we have to ask

  244. is what is the source of this authority?

  245. What's the source of it?

  246. What kind of authority are we actually appealing to

  247. when we speak to others,

  248. when we exhort them and when we rebuke them?

  249. And before we get to the answer to that,

  250. I want to give you three errant ways,

  251. three errant ways of viewing spiritual authority.

  252. The first one is this,

  253. spiritual authority is not inherent in a church leader.

  254. Spiritual authority is not inherent in a church leader.

  255. In other words,

  256. we have no power and authority in and of ourselves

  257. to issue spiritual commands to others.

  258. But there's a lot of people

  259. who would have you think otherwise.

  260. There are the self-proclaimed faith healers

  261. in the Word of Faith movement.

  262. They declare that they possess power

  263. in and of themselves over disease and demons

  264. and that the only way for you to access that power

  265. is if you become one of their disciples

  266. and contribute to their ministries.

  267. They claim the power is in them.

  268. They claim the power is in what they can do.

  269. It's not the only way that this is demonstrated.

  270. Roman Catholic traditions do this.

  271. They believe that there is an endowment

  272. on the priest in the Roman Catholic Church

  273. to actually convey the forgiveness of sins

  274. to those who would come

  275. and follow the prescribed recipe for penance

  276. and whatever that may be.

  277. You go and you sit in the confession,

  278. you tell the priest what you've done,

  279. and then the priest conveys forgiveness

  280. based on what he tells you to do

  281. in that particular moment.

  282. But spiritual authority doesn't belong

  283. to the church leader,

  284. not in and of himself.

  285. But this happens in evangelical circles as well,

  286. doesn't it?

  287. If you're like me,

  288. you've been around a lot of people,

  289. legalistic types of people,

  290. where pastors act as if their authority

  291. is in themselves.

  292. They issue extra biblical commands

  293. to the people,

  294. and they believe themselves

  295. to be above criticism.

  296. They exercise the type of authority

  297. over others that isn't actually given

  298. to them in the Bible.

  299. They demand that before you do anything,

  300. you come and get their permission.

  301. And if anyone brings criticism to them,

  302. they would quote something like,

  303. touch not God's anointed.

  304. They put themselves above the word.

  305. They put themselves above the truth.

  306. But the problem is,

  307. in each of these scenarios,

  308. these individuals are claiming

  309. for themselves a power

  310. that only belongs to Christ.

  311. And they manipulate others

  312. to believe it

  313. in order that they may assume

  314. power over them.

  315. But spiritual authority

  316. is not inherent in the church leader.

  317. Secondly, spiritual authority

  318. is not granted to an institution.

  319. It's not granted to an institution.

  320. Let's think about Roman Catholicism again,

  321. or the Eastern Orthodox traditions,

  322. or various cults.

  323. They all elevate

  324. their institutional authority

  325. as either equal to

  326. or above the scriptures.

  327. And when there is a conflict

  328. between the church

  329. and the scriptures,

  330. those traditions

  331. presume to have authority

  332. over the Bible itself,

  333. dictating as an institution

  334. what people should do

  335. and believe.

  336. Some of you,

  337. I know you have history

  338. with Roman Catholicism,

  339. and the basic understanding

  340. of authority

  341. in the Roman Catholic Church

  342. is like a three-legged stool.

  343. There's the scriptures,

  344. there's the traditions,

  345. and then there's the magisterium.

  346. The church traditions

  347. and the magisterium

  348. are at least put as equal weight

  349. to the scriptures.

  350. And whenever the traditions

  351. and the scriptures contradict,

  352. the ultimate authority

  353. belongs to the magisterium,

  354. the pope,

  355. and the bishops

  356. who surround him

  357. in order to pass judgment.

  358. He acts as God's representative

  359. on earth.

  360. That is completely foreign

  361. to the Bible.

  362. There is no spiritual authority

  363. granted to an institution.

  364. Jesus dealt with these people.

  365. Mark chapter 7,

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  366. he said to them,

  367. well did Isaiah prophesy

  368. of you hypocrites,

  369. this people honors me

  370. with their lips,

  371. but their heart

  372. is far from me.

  373. In vain they worship me,

  374. teaching as doctrines

  375. the commandments of men.

  376. You leave the commandment of God

  377. and hold to the tradition

  378. of men, Jesus said.

  379. So that's not what Paul

  380. is talking about.

  381. He's not saying

  382. that the authority

  383. belongs to you, Titus.

  384. He's not saying

  385. the authority belongs to you

  386. and the elders

  387. as an institution, Titus.

  388. The third way

  389. this is errantly thought of

  390. this, spiritual authority

  391. does not belong

  392. to the individual self.

  393. This is the modern

  394. secular idea

  395. that the only authority

  396. I have is me.

  397. I do what I feel is right.

  398. I determine for myself

  399. what's right

  400. and what's wrong

  401. and any other authority

  402. is by nature

  403. oppressive.

  404. Well that's not

  405. biblical either.

  406. So what then

  407. is the source

  408. of this authority

  409. that Paul writes about

  410. in chapter 2

  411. in verse 15?

  412. There is only one authority

  413. from which we can

  414. exhort and rebuke

  415. and it is the very word of God.

  416. It's the Bible.

  417. Our preaching

  418. and our teaching

  419. and our evangelism

  420. and our discipling

  421. they're not based

  422. on what we think is right

  423. or what a religious institution

  424. declares is right

  425. or certainly what secular ideas

  426. think is right.

  427. It is based on the scriptures

  428. and the scriptures alone.

  429. Think about what Paul said

  430. to the Galatians.

  431. Remember they were beginning

  432. to abandon the true gospel.

  433. In Galatians chapter 1

    Galatians 1 chapter mention

  434. in verse 8 he says

  435. but even if we

  436. speaking of me and my team

  437. or even an angel from heaven

  438. were to speak to you a gospel

  439. contrary to what we've preached

  440. let him be accursed.

  441. In other words

  442. the truth isn't the truth

  443. because I say it is

  444. and the truth isn't the truth

  445. because an angel says it is.

  446. The truth is the truth

  447. because God says it is.

  448. The authority lies in the word.

  449. Think about this

  450. in connection

  451. with the great commission.

  452. Matthew 28

  453. Jesus came to them

  454. and said

  455. all authority.

  456. Now don't forsake

  457. the parallel here.

  458. Paul is telling Titus

  459. rebuke with all authority.

  460. Jesus is saying

  461. all authority

  462. in heaven and on earth

  463. has been given to me

  464. to Jesus

  465. not to Titus.

  466. Go therefore

  467. and make disciples

  468. baptizing them

  469. evangelizing them

  470. teaching them

  471. to observe

  472. all that I have

  473. commanded.

  474. Now

  475. Jesus' authority

  476. is intrinsic

  477. because he is

  478. by his very nature

  479. divine.

  480. He is God.

  481. He is the source of truth.

  482. He is the source

  483. of authority.

  484. He commissioned

  485. the apostles

  486. to go

  487. but their authority

  488. was only

  489. an extension

  490. of their responsibility

  491. to preach

  492. his gospel.

  493. To preach

  494. his message

  495. not their own.

  496. Jesus says

  497. I say

  498. unto you

  499. we say

  500. thus says

  501. the Lord.

  502. There is a difference

  503. there.

  504. We are to make

  505. disciples

  506. by preaching

  507. his gospel

  508. and teaching

  509. his commandments.

  510. the authority

  511. is not our own.

  512. The authority

  513. is Christ

  514. and we are not

  515. to issue

  516. our commands

  517. but his.

  518. And the place

  519. that God

  520. has seen fit

  521. to reveal

  522. his gospel

  523. and his commands

  524. is not

  525. in an institution

  526. and it is not

  527. within you.

  528. It is in the pages

  529. of the Bible.

  530. The ultimate authority

  531. is the word of God

  532. not the one

  533. who preaches it.

  534. says MacArthur

  535. no matter

  536. what his training

  537. or experience

  538. or personal abilities

  539. the preacher

  540. has spiritual

  541. authority

  542. only to the extent

  543. that what he says

  544. conforms to the word

  545. of God.

  546. And that applies

  547. to each of us.

  548. Our authority

  549. is only an extension

  550. of the word of God.

  551. So if we're going

  552. around commanding

  553. and exhorting

  554. and rebuking

  555. it better be

  556. with our Bibles open.

  557. Not commanding

  558. what we think

  559. people should do.

  560. But what God

  561. demands of them

  562. and what he reveals

  563. to us.

  564. When we listen

  565. to the authoritative

  566. teaching of others

  567. we need to make sure

  568. it's rooted

  569. in the scripture.

  570. When you receive

  571. that counsel

  572. from even a trusted

  573. family member

  574. make sure it's rooted

  575. in the scripture.

  576. Someone told me

  577. recently

  578. that their

  579. father told them

  580. you need to put

  581. the Bible down

  582. and put your brain on.

  583. that's bad advice.

  584. That's the opposite

  585. of what we do.

  586. It doesn't matter

  587. how trusted

  588. the person is.

  589. Make sure

  590. what you heed

  591. is the word.

  592. So we see

  593. speak the word

  594. teach it with authority.

  595. Thirdly and finally

  596. he says

  597. prevent

  598. the hearer's contempt.

  599. Prevent

  600. the hearer's contempt.

  601. Verse 15 again

  602. declare these things

  603. exhort

  604. and rebuke

  605. with all authority.

  606. Let no one

  607. disregard you.

  608. Let no one

  609. disregard you.

  610. So in this

  611. final imperative

  612. it's the negative.

  613. The first two

  614. he says

  615. do

  616. do

  617. now he says

  618. do not

  619. do not let

  620. do not permit

  621. something.

  622. He's telling him

  623. to prevent

  624. his hearers

  625. from holding

  626. the gospel message

  627. in contempt.

  628. Titus was to

  629. authoritatively

  630. preach the Bible

  631. in such a way

  632. that no one

  633. could escape

  634. its truth.

  635. Now Brian

  636. Chappell helps us

  637. here.

  638. He says

  639. this reminds us

  640. that our teaching

  641. may be made

  642. ineffective

  643. either

  644. by failing

  645. to speak

  646. with authority

  647. or by failing

  648. to live

  649. in accord

  650. with the scriptures

  651. ourselves.

  652. So let's think

  653. about that

  654. for a moment

  655. before we finish.

  656. In one sense

  657. the statement

  658. reflects what

  659. will happen

  660. if we speak

  661. the truth

  662. but not

  663. in an

  664. authoritative

  665. way.

  666. Again we're

  667. not talking

  668. about harshness.

  669. We're not

  670. talking about

  671. speaking truth

  672. without grace.

  673. We're not

  674. even saying

  675. speak it

  676. without using

  677. or endeavoring

  678. to use

  679. winsome

  680. persuasive

  681. words and

  682. language.

  683. I even think

  684. that that's

  685. important and

  686. even biblical

  687. for us to

  688. understand.

  689. That's not

  690. what we're

  691. saying.

  692. We're not

  693. talking about

  694. going around

  695. barking orders

  696. at people.

  697. We're talking

  698. about saying

  699. thus says

  700. the Lord

  701. engaging with

  702. people on

  703. the truth

  704. of God.

  705. But we

  706. must never

  707. present the

  708. truth of

  709. God in

  710. such a way

  711. that it

  712. seems optional.

  713. As if the

  714. word of God

  715. is just one

  716. of the

  717. options in

  718. the midst

  719. of many

  720. options.

  721. And in

  722. a day of

  723. supposed

  724. tolerance

  725. people will

  726. not appreciate

  727. it when you

  728. talk about

  729. the exclusivity

  730. of the

  731. gospel.

  732. The

  733. inerrancy

  734. and the

  735. authority of

  736. the Bible.

  737. They won't

  738. appreciate that

  739. but that's

  740. what the

  741. Bible actually

  742. tells us

  743. to do.

  744. We command

  745. because it

  746. is the

  747. truth.

  748. We can't

  749. leave it

  750. optional.

  751. It's a

  752. warning against

  753. limiting the

  754. gospel to

  755. those who we

  756. think would be

  757. most tolerant

  758. of hearing it.

  759. Just because a

  760. person rejects

  761. God's word

  762. either blatantly

  763. or out of

  764. loyalty to

  765. another religion

  766. doesn't make

  767. them any less

  768. accountable to

  769. it.

  770. Do you

  771. understand what

  772. I mean by

  773. that?

  774. Just because

  775. this person is

  776. a Muslim

  777. doesn't mean

  778. that they're

  779. not accountable

  780. to the

  781. truth of

  782. God.

  783. God's word

  784. is not

  785. applicable only

  786. to Christians.

  787. It's applicable

  788. to the whole

  789. human race.

  790. It is relevant

  791. to the whole

  792. human race.

  793. It must be

  794. preached to

  795. the whole

  796. human race.

  797. Not as an

  798. option that

  799. they might

  800. consider but

  801. as a command

  802. from the

  803. God who

  804. created them

  805. and who

  806. demands of

  807. them to

  808. show his

  809. glory.

  810. Again, it's

  811. God's truth

  812. not man's.

  813. Therefore, we

  814. need to speak

  815. authoritatively

  816. to all people.

  817. Well, there's

  818. another sense

  819. here, let no

  820. one disregard

  821. you, that

  822. parallels what

  823. Paul said to

  824. Timothy.

  825. In 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  826. chapter 4,

  827. remember Paul

  828. says, let no

  829. one despise you

  830. for your youth.

  831. This is 1 Timothy

  832. 4.12, let no

  833. one despise you

  834. for your youth

  835. but set the

  836. believers an

  837. example in

  838. speech and

  839. conduct and

  840. love and

  841. faith and

  842. purity.

  843. And he goes

  844. on.

  845. Well, what was

  846. Paul trying to

  847. tell Timothy

  848. to do?

  849. He wasn't

  850. saying, Timothy,

  851. I know you're a

  852. young man so

  853. what you're

  854. going to have

  855. to do is go

  856. get the

  857. older people in

  858. the church.

  859. You're going

  860. to have to

  861. strap them

  862. down to a

  863. chair and

  864. make sure

  865. that they

  866. listen to

  867. what you

  868. say.

  869. That's not

  870. what he's

  871. saying.

  872. He's saying,

  873. Timothy,

  874. don't live with

  875. behaviors that

  876. are typical

  877. of young men

  878. your age because

  879. you're going to

  880. discredit the

  881. gospel message

  882. that you're

  883. preaching.

  884. Instead, set an

  885. example for the

  886. church and he

  887. gives the list of

  888. ways that Timothy

  889. has to set an

  890. example.

  891. That's what he's

  892. saying to Titus

  893. here.

  894. Let no one

  895. disregard you.

  896. He's not saying

  897. keep barking at

  898. them and force

  899. them to sit in

  900. the chair and

  901. listen to whatever

  902. you have to say

  903. to give them a

  904. piece of your

  905. mind.

  906. That's not what

  907. he's saying.

  908. He's saying,

  909. live in such a

  910. way that you

  911. don't discredit

  912. the gospel message,

  913. that people can't

  914. easily evade the

  915. message you're

  916. preaching.

  917. We can speak

  918. God's word

  919. routinely, but if

  920. our manner of

  921. life is not

  922. worthy of

  923. respect, what

  924. good will our

  925. preaching be?

  926. It will be no

  927. good.

  928. Almost no

  929. good.

  930. We can speak

  931. authoritatively,

  932. but who will

  933. hear us if our

  934. words are harsh

  935. and unkind?

  936. generally, people

  937. can see through

  938. our hypocrisies.

  939. They can tell

  940. when our thoughts

  941. of Christ haven't

  942. truly gripped us

  943. and consumed us

  944. in our lives.

  945. And the last

  946. thing people are

  947. interested in

  948. listening to is a

  949. religious lecture

  950. from someone who

  951. barely seems to be

  952. a Christian

  953. themselves.

  954. Let no one

  955. disregard you,

  956. church.

  957. don't make

  958. God's message

  959. optional and

  960. live a life that's

  961. worthy of the

  962. gospel.

  963. That's why Paul

  964. says to the

  965. Philippians, isn't

  966. it?

  967. Live worthy of

  968. the gospel.

  969. Show obedience

  970. and love.

  971. Observe the

  972. Lord's day to

  973. show that you

  974. actually love the

  975. Lord.

  976. You're actually

  977. gripped by his

  978. truth.

  979. You actually care

  980. to obey his

  981. commands.

  982. Live a life that's

  983. consistent with the

  984. message that you're

  985. preaching.

  986. Don't render

  987. your teaching

  988. ineffective.

  989. No one teaches

  990. the Bible by

  991. accident.

  992. It takes

  993. intentionality.

  994. It takes a

  995. heart level

  996. commitment to

  997. regularly engage

  998. in this kind of

  999. discipling.

  1000. And it's a

  1001. responsibility that

  1002. belongs to each

  1003. of us.

  1004. For you parents,

  1005. this is a

  1006. responsibility you

  1007. have first and

  1008. foremost with your

  1009. children.

  1010. grandchildren.

  1011. You're your

  1012. grandchildren.

  1013. You have a

  1014. responsibility to

  1015. teach the word.

  1016. And that's not

  1017. going to happen

  1018. accidentally.

  1019. It's going to

  1020. take you caring in

  1021. those moments to

  1022. say, I must give

1023. the truth of God to

  1024. my kids.

  1025. I must train them

  1026. in righteousness.

  1027. It's also

  1028. impossible to speak

  1029. the truth of God

  1030. if you don't know

  1031. the truth of God.

  1032. God, we can't

  1033. ever expect to

  1034. obey these

  1035. commands and to

  1036. be effective in

  1037. our ministries to

  1038. other people if we

  1039. don't actually know

  1040. the Bible.

  1041. Study the Bible.

  1042. Read the word.

  1043. Get all the

  1044. resources you can to

  1045. help you understand

1046. it the best way that

  1047. you can.

1048. Pray and ask for the

1049. Lord to lead you and

  1050. enlighten you by his

  1051. Holy Spirit so that

  1052. you can understand it.

  1053. Memorize it.

  1054. Ingrain it in your

  1055. heart and your mind

  1056. not only for your

  1057. own benefit but for

  1058. the benefit of others

  1059. that are in your

  1060. life.

  1061. Only then will we

1062. care to know it and

  1063. share it with others.

1064. Only then will we be

1065. able to sit down with

  1066. someone, view their

  1067. circumstance with an

  1068. open Bible instead of

  1069. just an open mind.

  1070. And the question is

  1071. simple.

  1072. Do you engage in

  1073. word-based ministry?

1074. Tom and I had coffee

  1075. together the other

  1076. day in Mooresville and

  1077. I love it.

  1078. Every now and then

  1079. when I do something

  1080. like this I often

  1081. wonder, I shouldn't

  1082. think this way, but

  1083. I often wonder what

  1084. are the people around

  1085. us thinking right now

1086. because of two of us

  1087. we're sitting there

  1088. with our Bibles open

  1089. and we're working

  1090. through Romans chapter

  1091. six together and we

  1092. weren't being quiet

  1093. about it and we're

  1094. just working through

  1095. the Bible.

  1096. You know what we're

  1097. doing?

  1098. We're saying hey

  1099. here's what's going

  1100. on in our lives.

  1101. How can we process

  1102. this through the lens

  1103. of the scripture?

1104. That's what you can do.

  1105. You sit down with

  1106. one another and open

  1107. the Bible.

  1108. Say hey I know you're

  1109. going through this

  1110. difficult time.

  1111. Let's look at some

  1112. encouragement from the

  1113. scripture.

1114. What is the truth about

  1115. what Christ has done

  1116. for us?

  1117. We lift each other's

  1118. hearts up with the

  1119. truth.

  1120. Not just by saying

  1121. they're there.

1122. It's going to be okay.

  1123. Right?
