  1. As we begin, let me just remind you, as I did on Friday night, that the four biblical

  2. gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, are not merely biographies of Jesus.

  3. They do provide biographical sketches of the life of Jesus that are helpful to us, but

  4. that's really not their main purpose or intention.

  5. They are also historical documents.

  6. They are reliable, credible historical documents, even by the estimation of those who do not

  7. believe the message of the gospels, they are regarded as historically accurate and factual.

  8. But these books are not primarily history.

  9. These books are very evangelistic in their nature.

  10. John's purpose in writing this was not just to give you a sketch of who Jesus was, nor

  11. was it just to merely record the historical events of his life.

  12. It was to present certain facts about the person and the work of Christ so that he might persuade

  13. the reader that Jesus is indeed the Messiah and the Son of God.

  14. And everything in these four books pushes forward to the most significant proofs of Jesus' identity

  15. and purpose, which is his death on the cross and his subsequent resurrection from the dead

  16. three days later.

  17. And as we come to this particular study today and as we think about the resurrection throughout

  18. the day, it becomes immediately apparent to us that the resurrection of Jesus is crucial

  19. to the Christian gospel.

  20. I mean, it's absolutely crucial.

  21. And we could point to many different ways.

  22. Let me give you just a few, just to remind you of how crucial this is to our faith as a whole.

  23. First, the resurrection verifies Jesus' divine identity.

  24. Jesus came saying, I am the Father and one.

  25. People were claiming that perhaps this man is a deified figure.

  26. Maybe this man is God.

  27. Jesus is making those claims himself.

  28. And the Bible repeatedly asserts this deity, this divinity of Christ, and his resurrection

  29. is the ultimate validation of those claims.

  30. Without the resurrection of Christ, we cannot say that Jesus is divine.

  31. We see this in Acts chapter 2, Peter's first sermon after the resurrection.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  32. In verse 24, he says, God raised him up, speaking of Jesus, God raised him up, loosing the pangs

  33. of death because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

  34. It wasn't possible for him to remain dead.

  35. Why was it not possible for him to remain dead?

  36. Well, partly because he's not just a man.

  37. He is also truly God.

  38. He could not be held by death.

  39. Therefore, the resurrection of Christ verifies the claims of Jesus that he is divine.

  40. Hebrews chapter 1 echoes this.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  41. Many places do, but maybe I'll show you Hebrews 1.3.

  42. He is the radiance of the glory of God.

  43. He is the exact imprint of God's nature.

  44. And he upholds the universe by the word of his power.

  45. And here's part and parcel of what goes along with this thought of Jesus's divinity.

  46. That after making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high.

  47. Jesus's work as Messiah gives credibility and validity to his claims

  48. as being the son of God.

  49. So the resurrection is crucial to that.

  50. If Jesus doesn't raise from the dead, we have no reason to believe that Jesus is anything other than a good man,

  51. which is what many people claim.

  52. The resurrection changes that, though.

  53. Secondly, the resurrection shows that God the Father accepted Jesus's sacrifice for our sins on the cross.

  54. It was a sinless sacrifice that was necessary.

  55. We see that pictured in the Old Testament sacrifices when they would bring the lambs and the goats and the bulls.

  56. They had to be without blemish and without spot.

  57. Why?

  58. Because God is holy and he demands perfection for one.

  59. But they were pointing forward to a greater sacrifice, the sacrifice of Christ,

  60. which meant that in order for our salvation to be won and for sins to be forgiven,

  61. his sacrifice must be won that is without spot and without blemish.

  62. It would take a sinless man to die for the sins of men.

  63. And if Jesus had not risen from the dead, it would mean that Jesus himself was a sinner,

  64. that his death paid for his own sins.

  65. But Jesus had no sins for which he had to pay.

  66. Therefore, his death was an atonement for our sins.

  67. And the resurrection is what proves this to us.

  68. It's echoed for us in Romans chapter 4.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  69. Therefore, righteousness will be counted to us who believe in him,

  70. who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord,

  71. who was delivered up for our trespasses.

  72. And then this last phrase is so important.

  73. He was raised for our justification.

  74. Our justification and righteousness before God hinges on Jesus' resurrection from the dead.

  75. Because if Jesus had not risen, then he was a sinner.

  76. And there was no way that his atonement would be sufficient for us.

  77. But the Father raises him from the dead,

  78. saying and declaring,

  79. I have received this sacrifice.

  80. It has appeased my wrath for sinners.

  81. Thirdly, the resurrection proves Christ's power over life and death.

  82. Jesus claims over and over in the Gospels

  83. to have the power to give us eternal life.

  84. Those claims would be absolutely meaningless

  85. if he himself was powerless against death.

  86. We think of very simply, John 3.16,

  87. God so loved the world that he gave his only son

  88. that whoever believes in him should not perish,

  89. should not die, but have eternal life.

  90. That's a promise given to those of us who believe specifically

  91. in the person and the work of Christ.

  92. Jesus said himself,

  93. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

  94. Well, those claims mean nothing

  95. if Jesus himself does not have power over death.

  96. If he does not have power of life and over death,

  97. then he is a liar.

  98. He's a lunatic, as C.S. Lewis said.

  99. He's either a liar or he's a lunatic or he's the Lord.

  100. And if Jesus doesn't raise from the dead,

  101. he cannot be a good man.

  102. He cannot be a moral teacher.

  103. He cannot be a good example.

  104. He can only be a liar and a wild man.

  105. The resurrection is crucial.

  106. Fourthly, without the resurrection,

  107. the Christian faith would be in vain

  108. and we would remain lost in our sins.

  109. Paul tells us this explicitly in 1 Corinthians 15.

  110. If Christ had not been raised,

  111. your faith is futile.

  112. You are still in your sins.

  113. Those who have fallen asleep

  114. or those who have died believing Christ

  115. have also perished.

  116. If in Christ we have hope in this life only,

  117. we are of all people most to be pitied.

  118. The resurrection is absolutely crucial

  119. to the Christian gospel.

  120. If you remove the resurrection of Jesus,

  121. you effectively dismantle the entire Christian faith.

  122. It's completely destroyed.

  123. There's nothing left.

  124. Everything Christians believe

  125. ultimately hinges upon the reality

  126. that Jesus of Nazareth rose from the dead.

  127. Even our conviction that the Bible

  128. is the inerrant word of God

  129. hinges first on the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.

  130. So it's no surprise then

  131. that skeptics through the centuries

  132. have taken the Christian message

  133. and they have targeted the credibility

  134. specifically of Jesus' resurrection.

  135. Because if you can discredit it,

  136. you can completely dismantle Christianity.

  137. And if you can dismantle Christianity,

  138. you can discredit the word of God.

  139. And if you can discredit the word of God,

  140. then you can say,

  141. I am my own God.

  142. I choose my own way.

  143. There is no one for which I am accountable to.

  144. So they target the resurrection.

  145. They have to.

  146. Because if the resurrection is not true,

  147. then all of this is a waste.

  148. All sorts of theories have been developed

  149. through the centuries

  150. in attempts to rationalize

  151. the resurrection of Christ away.

  152. We could go into all of those things.

  153. We won't do it now for sake of time.

  154. But all kinds of things have been presented.

  155. Still, none of those theories

  156. are ultimately compelling.

  157. They're just not.

  158. There is just too much evidence

  159. that they have to overcome

  160. showing that natural reason

  161. does not ultimately have the final word.

  162. It's not ultimately,

  163. does it make sense to our human minds

  164. that something like this would happen?

  165. It just doesn't work.

  166. There's too much evidence to the contrary

  167. that these theories have to overcome.

  168. And not a single theory

  169. going against the resurrection of Christ

  170. has come even close

  171. to being compelling

  172. to dismiss all of the evidence

  173. that's available to us.

  174. But our text

  175. presents for us this morning

  176. a different kind of skeptic.

  177. What we're dealing with here in John 20

  178. is not the skeptic

  179. that we've just thought about.

  180. The skeptic who is trying

  181. to do away with Christianity

  182. and trying to disprove it

  183. that is utterly hardened

  184. and rebellious

  185. toward everything that Christ is

  186. and everything that Christ has done.

  187. That's not the kind of skeptic

  188. that we find here.

  189. Thomas wasn't trying to outright deny

  190. or disprove the resurrection

  191. in the way that,

  192. for example,

  193. the Jewish leaders were in Matthew 28

  194. who upon hearing of Christ's resurrection

  195. literally made up a lie

  196. and told the Roman soldiers,

  197. said just tell them

  198. that the disciples came

  199. and stole the body away

  200. or whatever.

  201. He's been stolen.

  202. Even they, in that moment,

  203. they're trying to do something

  204. completely different.

  205. That's not what Thomas is doing here.

  206. Thomas, like all of the disciples,

  207. would have been devastated

  208. by the surrounding events

  209. of Jesus' crucifixion.

  210. He wanted the resurrection to be true.

  211. He's not trying to deny it

  212. or disprove it outrightly

  213. in an antagonism against Christ.

  214. And yet, he still struggled

  215. with an unbelieving heart.

  216. We might call Thomas

  217. a Christian skeptic.

  218. Friendly toward Jesus,

  219. identifying in some sense

  220. with the Christian community,

  221. but still remaining lost

  222. in unbelief.

  223. I think there's many Thomases

  224. that fill churches

  225. every single Sunday.

  226. They're friendly toward Jesus.

  227. In some sense,

  228. they identify with the Christian community,

  229. but ultimately,

  230. they are lost in unbelief.

  231. And there may be a few here this morning

  232. that fit that description quite well.

  233. The resurrection demands something of us

  234. that most people are unwilling to supply.

  235. Total faith.

  236. That's what it demands.

  237. And the issue of belief

  238. is at the very heart of this passage.

  239. And my goal this morning

  240. is to allow the text of Scripture

  241. to call you to the same belief

  242. that the risen Christ

  243. called Thomas to possess here.

  244. The three things I want to point out to you

  245. as we work our way through the narrative.

  246. First, I want you to see

  247. an unbelieving heart.

  248. An unbelieving heart.

  249. Verse 24.

  250. Now Thomas was one of the twelve

  251. called the twin.

  252. He was not with them when Jesus came.

  253. So the disciples told him,

  254. we have seen the Lord.

  255. But he said to them,

  256. unless I see in his hands

  257. the mark of the nails,

  258. place my finger into the mark of the nails

  259. and place my hand into his side,

  260. I will never believe.

  261. That's a strong statement.

  262. I will never believe

  263. unless my conditions are met,

  264. Thomas says.

  265. Let's think for just a minute

  266. about this man Thomas in the Bible.

  267. There's not a lot that the Gospels tell us

  268. outside of the general list

  269. that are given of the disciples.

  270. And one other occasion in John chapter 21,

    John 21 chapter mention

  271. we see that Thomas is just with Peter

  272. and some of the others as they're fishing.

  273. And Galilee.

  274. Other than that,

  275. there's only two places

  276. in the Gospels

  277. where we find any kind of detail

  278. at all about Thomas.

  279. Both of them are found

  280. in John's Gospel.

  281. And I just want to look at them quickly

  282. to give maybe a little bit

  283. of a character sketch of this man.

  284. In fact, just turn with me first

  285. to John chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  286. You're already in chapter 20.

  287. Just turn a couple of pages back

  288. to John chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  289. You remember the disciples

  290. had been around the area of Jerusalem

  291. and it had become very clear

  292. that the Jews were trying to arrest

  293. and murder Jesus.

  294. They left the vicinity of Jerusalem

  295. and they were serving.

  296. Jesus was teaching

  297. and was doing things in another place.

  298. Well, while they were away,

  299. Lazarus, Jesus' friend,

  300. brother of Martha and Mary,

  301. died.

  302. Word was sent to Jesus

  303. that he was near death

  304. and that he had died.

  305. And then Jesus decided

  306. to remain in that area

  307. for a couple of days.

  308. And then he tells the disciples

  309. in verse 7

  310. that he wants to go back to Bethany,

  311. which is just outside of Jerusalem.

  312. And the response of the disciples

  313. in verse 8

  314. is, are you crazy?

  315. Essentially.

  316. They're trying to kill us there.

  317. Why would we go back?

  318. And Jesus goes through

  319. and he explains exactly

  320. what's happening

  321. and why he's going to go back.

  322. And then it's during this discussion

  323. about going back toward Jerusalem

  324. that John records

  325. a brief statement from Thomas.

  326. It's in verse 16.

  327. So Thomas, called the twin,

  328. said to his fellow disciples,

  329. let us also go

  330. that we may die with him.

  331. Let us also go

  332. that we may die with him.

  333. Now let me tell you

  334. what this isn't.

  335. This is not an exhilarating

  336. battle cry from Thomas.

  337. You know, there are those,

  338. you know, there are those crazy people

  339. who just love war.

  340. Like they're just,

  341. they get themselves

  342. all worked up over it

  343. and they're ready to go.

  344. That is not Thomas.

  345. That's not any of these disciples

  346. except perhaps Simon the Zealot.

  347. Peter shows some aggression

  348. in a couple of instances.

  349. That's not what Thomas

  350. is saying here.

  351. He's not trying to

  352. muster up some kind of courage.

  353. This is a combination of Thomas

  354. and his tendency to battle

  355. with faith and doubt

  356. all at the same time.

  357. Spurgeon says this about this text.

  358. It's a singular mixture

  359. of faith and unbelief.

  360. Thomas so believes his master

  361. that he's willing to die with him.

  362. He so doubts his master

  363. that although the Savior

  364. had plainly told him

  365. that he was immortal

  366. till his work was done,

  367. Thomas is afraid

  368. that his master

  369. and all of them

  370. will be put to death.

  371. Thomas loves Jesus.

  372. He wants to be with Jesus.

  373. He maybe will even

  374. commit to dying with Jesus

  375. as a friend

  376. but he does not fully

  377. believe Jesus' words.

  378. He says,

  379. well, we might as well

  380. go with him

  381. and all die

  382. in the process of it.

  383. It tells us a little bit

  384. about this man,

  385. doesn't it?

  386. This mixture of faith and doubt.

  387. The next one is in

  388. John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  389. Just flip there quickly.

  390. John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  391. John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  392. John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  393. This is

  394. the night of Jesus' arrest.

  395. This is in the upper room

  396. at the Last Supper.

  397. John records part

  398. of Jesus' final words

  399. to the disciples

  400. on the night of his arrest here

  401. and he was preparing them

  402. for his approaching death.

  403. He was comforting them

  404. with the promise of heaven

  405. for all who believe in him.

  406. And I want you to notice

  407. in verse 4.

  408. Jesus says,

  409. I'm leaving

  410. and he says,

  411. and you know the way

  412. to where I am going.

  413. Where is it that Jesus is going?

  414. He's going to the Father.

  415. It's a picture of heaven

  416. but he's going to the Father.

  417. That's the point

  418. of the statement

  419. that he's making.

  420. And he tells the disciples,

  421. you know the way there.

  422. You know the way to God.

  423. And look what Thomas says.

  424. Lord,

  425. we don't know

  426. where you're going.

  427. How can we know the way?

  428. And that produces

  429. this amazing statement

  430. from Jesus.

  431. I am the way

  432. and the truth

  433. and the life.

  434. No one comes to the Father

  435. except by me.

  436. Now I want you to notice

  437. the emphasis

  438. of Thomas' statement.

  439. He does not ask

  440. how they are to know the way.

  441. That's not what he's asking.

  442. As if he needs to gain

  443. some type of information

  444. to be more pliable

  445. to the things

  446. that Jesus is saying.

  447. That's not what he's saying.

  448. Giving what he thought

  449. to be a mystery

  450. in Jesus' words.

  451. He asked how they

  452. could possibly know.

  453. Lord,

  454. we don't know

  455. where you're going.

  456. How could we possibly

  457. know the way?

  458. This is another moment

  459. of skepticism

  460. and pessimism.

  461. There's a sense

  462. even in which

  463. Thomas was pushing

  464. against Jesus'

  465. assertion

  466. that they knew

  467. the way to God.

  468. He says,

  469. how could we possibly know?

  470. And this helps us

  471. understand a little bit

  472. Thomas' tendency

  473. toward pessimism

  474. and skepticism.

  475. So when the other disciples

  476. declared to him

  477. back in John chapter 20

    John 20 chapter mention

  478. that they had seen

  479. the risen Lord,

  480. it's not entirely surprising

  481. that Thomas,

  482. having been absent

  483. on that occasion,

  484. faced another troubling

  485. battle of unbelief.

  486. It's his continual struggle,

  487. it seems.

  488. And the issue for Thomas

  489. and for us

  490. is not a lack

  491. of evidence.

  492. The issue for Thomas

  493. is a stubborn,

  494. unbelieving heart.

  495. Now I want you to consider

  496. for just a moment

  497. the credibility

  498. of the evidence

  499. that Thomas had

  500. in John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  501. First,

  502. the scriptures

  503. had foretold

  504. that Jesus would rise

  505. from the dead.

  506. All of the ultimate,

  507. the Old Testament

  508. pointed to the death

  509. and resurrection

  510. of the Messiah.

  511. Think about Isaiah.

  512. 53 first

  513. in verse 10.

  514. When his soul

  515. has made

  516. an offering for guilt,

  517. he shall see

  518. his offspring.

  519. He will see

  520. his offspring

  521. after he's been

  522. put to death,

  523. meaning that

  524. he will not

  525. remain dead.

  526. There will be life

  527. after this death.

  528. He shall

  529. prolong his days.

  530. The will of the Lord

  531. shall prosper

  532. in his hand.

  533. That's beyond

  534. becoming

  535. a guilt offering

  536. for the sins of man.

  537. How about

  538. Psalm 16?

  539. This is what

  540. Peter quoted

  541. in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  542. He looked at

  543. David's words

  544. and he said,

  545. for you will not

  546. abandon my soul

  547. to Sheol

  548. or to death

  549. or let your

  550. holy one

  551. see corruption.

  552. Peter is saying

  553. David wasn't

  554. talking about himself

  555. and the reason

  556. we know he wasn't

  557. talking about himself

  558. is because his tomb

  559. is right over there

  560. and if you go

  561. open it up,

  562. you'll see

  563. David's bones

  564. are still there.

  565. He's still dead.

  566. He wasn't

  567. talking about David.

  568. He was talking

  569. about Jesus.

  570. Now,

  571. why would you think

  572. that Peter

  573. would go to Psalm 16

  574. and use that

  575. as a proof

  576. for the resurrection

  577. of Christ?

  578. Because as we just read

  579. in Luke 24,

  580. Jesus himself

  581. sat down with Peter

  582. and with all

  583. the other disciples

  584. and opened their minds

  585. to understand

  586. all that the Scripture

  587. said concerning him

  588. and no doubt

  589. in that setting,

  590. Jesus had opened up

  591. to Psalm 16

  592. and said,

  593. look,

  594. David's still dead,

  595. men.

  596. This is about me.

  597. Matthew 12,

  598. Jesus himself says

  599. that Jonah

  600. was a sign

  601. for the resurrection.

  602. But he answered them,

  603. an evil and adulterous

  604. generation

  605. seeks for a sign,

  606. but no sign

  607. will be given to it

  608. except the sign

  609. of the prophet Jonah.

  610. For just as Jonah

  611. was three days

  612. and three nights

  613. in the belly

  614. of the great fish,

  615. so will the Son of Man

  616. be three days

  617. and three nights

  618. in the heart

  619. of the earth.

  620. The Old Testament

  621. had prophesied this

  622. and had pointed

  623. towards this moment.

  624. That was evidence

  625. that Thomas had.

  626. Secondly,

  627. Jesus plainly

  628. told his disciples

  629. this was going

  630. to happen.

  631. Mark chapter 10,

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  632. Jesus says,

  633. see,

  634. we are going up

  635. to Jerusalem

  636. and the Son of Man

  637. will be delivered

  638. over to the chief priest

  639. and the scribes.

  640. They will condemn him

  641. to death,

  642. deliver him

  643. to the Gentiles,

  644. they'll mock him

  645. and spit on him

  646. and flog him

  647. and kill him

  648. and after three days

  649. he will rise.

  650. That's the third time

  651. Mark records

  652. Jesus telling Thomas,

  653. I'm going to die

  654. and then I'm going to rise.

  655. The evidence

  656. was there for him.

  657. Third,

  658. look at the credible witnesses

  659. that declared

  660. this news to him.

  661. These were not people

  662. just off the street.

  663. These were not people

  664. Thomas didn't trust.

  665. These were Thomas'

  666. closest friends.

  667. People he trusted thoroughly

  668. and they came to him

  669. and they said,

  670. we've seen the Lord

  671. and he says,

  672. I don't believe it.

  673. I won't believe it,

  674. he says.

  675. The issue is not

  676. the evidence.

  677. The evidence was there

  678. for him.

  679. The issue is a stubborn,

  680. unbelieving heart.

  681. 1 Corinthians 15 again,

  682. Paul helps us here,

  683. doesn't he?

  684. Jesus appeared to Cephas,

  685. that's Peter.

  686. He appeared to the twelve.

  687. He appeared to more than

  688. 500 brothers at one time,

  689. most of whom are still alive.

  690. In other words,

  691. Paul says,

  692. go to the people

  693. that saw him

  694. and ask,

  695. they will verify

  696. what they saw.

  697. He appeared to James,

  698. he appeared to the apostles,

  699. last of all,

  700. he appeared also to me.

  701. The issue wasn't

  702. lack of evidence,

  703. the issue was

  704. an unbelieving heart

  705. refusing to trust

  706. the evidence

  707. that was provided.

  708. Thomas tried to set

  709. his own terms for faith,

  710. declaring,

  711. I will never believe

  712. until my conditions

  713. are met.

  714. And maybe you're

  715. in a similar situation

  716. to that this morning.

  717. The issue isn't evidence.

  718. The issue is

  719. you just don't want

  720. to believe.

  721. And unless God

  722. meets your demands,

  723. whatever they may be,

  724. you refuse

  725. because of the hardness

  726. of your heart.

  727. You may say,

  728. unless Jesus appears

  729. to me himself,

  730. I'm not going to believe it.

  731. Unless I finally get

  732. a satisfying answer

  733. for the problem

  734. of evil in the world,

  735. I'm just not going

  736. to believe.

  737. Unless people start

  738. being nicer to me,

  739. I'm not going to believe.

  740. Unless all of this stuff

  741. works out,

  742. the things I've been praying

  743. for,

  744. all of these prayers

  745. that I've been asking

  746. that have gone unanswered,

  747. unless they are answered,

  748. I will not believe.

  749. And you try to set

  750. your own terms for faith.

  751. It doesn't work.

  752. More than enough

  753. credible evidence

  754. has been provided.

  755. You've decided

  756. to set your own,

  757. maybe even intentionally

  758. impossible,

  759. terms for faith.

  760. And perhaps you do think,

  761. if Jesus were just

  762. to appear to me,

  763. if he would just

  764. make it easy

  765. and just come

  766. and just kind of

  767. do in this room

  768. this morning

  769. what he did

  770. for those disciples

  771. in whatever room

  772. it was that they were

  773. in on that day,

  774. then finally I would believe.

  775. But no, you wouldn't.

  776. Because the problem

  777. isn't evidence.

  778. The problem is your heart.

  779. You have a hard heart.

  780. Stubborn, unbelieving heart.

  781. And here's why I know it.

  782. Because Jesus himself said it.

  783. In Luke chapter 16,

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  784. telling the parable

  785. of the rich man and Lazarus.

  786. He gets to the end

  787. and remember,

  788. the rich man is crying out

  789. to Abraham and he says,

  790. if you will just send

  791. somebody from heaven

  792. to go to my brothers

  793. who are still living,

  794. somebody from the dead,

  795. then they'll repent

  796. and believe.

  797. And Abraham says,

  798. no they won't.

  799. They have Moses

  800. and the prophets.

  801. They have the scriptures.

  802. And if they will not receive

  803. the testimony

  804. of the scriptures,

  805. even if somebody

  806. raises from the dead,

  807. they will not believe.

  808. And you sit here

  809. and you think,

  810. if Jesus would just appear,

  811. I would finally believe.

  812. No, you wouldn't.

  813. Because the issue

  814. is not the evidence.

  815. The issue for you

  816. is your heart.

  817. And if he were to appear,

  818. you'd find some kind of way,

  819. unless he touches your heart,

  820. you'd find some kind of way

  821. to dismiss it.

  822. Well, I must need

  823. to take my medicine today.

  824. Well, I must be

  825. hallucinating again today.

  826. That can't possibly

  827. be what it is.

  828. Pastor Jared's pulling

  829. one of those

  830. faith healer tricks on me.

  831. No, it's not the evidence.

  832. It's your heart.

  833. So we see an unbelieving heart.

  834. Secondly,

  835. we see encountering

  836. the risen Lord.

  837. Encountering the risen Lord.

  838. Verse 26,

  839. eight days later,

  840. his disciples were inside again,

  841. and Thomas was with them.

  842. Although the doors were locked,

  843. Jesus came and stood

  844. among them and said,

  845. peace be with you.

  846. And he said to Thomas,

  847. put your finger here.

  848. See my hands.

  849. Put out your hand.

  850. Place it in my side.

  851. Do not disbelieve,

  852. but believe.

  853. And here's what I love about this.

  854. It's another glowing example

  855. of God's patience

  856. and grace towards us.

  857. Despite his doubt,

  858. Jesus graciously,

  859. mind you,

  860. very graciously,

  861. confronts Thomas,

  862. meeting him

  863. at his weakest moment.

  864. He comes to where he is.

  865. And there's three simple things

  866. that I want to point out

  867. to you about this.

  868. The first thing is this.

  869. Jesus came to Thomas.

  870. Jesus came to Thomas.

  871. There's so many people

  872. that think for Jesus

  873. to be willing to save them,

  874. that they have to make themselves

  875. savable first.

  876. They burden themselves

  877. with all of this religious practice

  878. and the pursuits

  879. of self-righteousness,

  880. hoping that it will be enough

  881. for God to grant them salvation.

  882. salvation.

  883. And if that's you this morning,

  884. you've totally missed the point.

  885. You've totally missed everything

  886. that's happening here

  887. in the Scriptures.

  888. The Scriptures teach us

  889. that salvation comes

  890. by God's grace alone.

  891. And Thomas' encounter

  892. is just one of many illustrations

  893. of this in the Bible.

  894. Jesus didn't wait for Thomas

  895. to get his act together

  896. before he was willing

  897. to appear.

  898. No.

  899. He graciously pursued Thomas

  900. in his sin

  901. and doubt.

  902. Jesus came to him

  903. graciously,

  904. mercifully,

  905. lovingly,

  906. appears to Thomas

  907. in this moment.

  908. It reminded me,

  909. thinking of this this week,

  910. some of you may remember

  911. this song.

  912. It was an old

  913. Squire Parsons song.

  914. I remember my dad singing

  915. when I was growing up.

  916. He came to me.

  917. Do you know that song?

  918. He came to me.

  919. He came to me.

  920. When I could not come

  921. to where he was,

  922. he came to me.

  923. That's exactly

  924. the point of the Bible.

  925. We could never come

  926. to where he is.

  927. You will never be good enough

  928. for what God's law demands.

  929. So God graciously comes to us

  930. in the person of Jesus Christ.

  931. And we see it all over again

  932. right here with Thomas.

  933. Jesus coming to him.

  934. Secondly,

  935. Jesus announced his peace.

  936. He announced his peace.

  937. Shalom is the common greeting

  938. of peace among Jews.

  939. But the peace that Jesus announced

  940. was more than a simple greeting.

  941. In spite of his refusal

  942. to believe the reports,

  943. Jesus did not appear

  944. to Thomas in anger.

  945. He appeared to him

  946. with a comforting peace.

  947. And this peace that he announces

  948. to Thomas and the others

  949. was the peace with God

  950. that he had just won for them

  951. on the cross.

  952. In other words,

  953. when Jesus appears to Thomas

  954. and he says,

  955. peace be with you,

  956. he is announcing

  957. that he was God's messenger

  958. of peace

  959. for the very sin of unbelief

  960. that Thomas was living in

  961. at that moment.

  962. I have brought peace to you,

  963. Thomas.

  964. To be sure,

  965. judgment,

  966. God's wrath

  967. awaits all unbelievers

  968. at the end of this life.

  969. But right now,

  970. it is not a message of judgment

  971. that Jesus comes and brings.

  972. Right now,

  973. it's a message of peace,

  974. his peace,

  975. won through the cross.

  976. And it's one

  977. that he brings to you today.

  978. We see this all over

  979. the New Testament.

  980. Romans 5,

  981. therefore being justified

  982. by faith,

  983. we have peace with God

  984. through our Lord,

  985. Jesus Christ.

  986. So Jesus comes to Thomas.

  987. When he comes to Thomas,

  988. he doesn't say condemned.

  989. When he comes to Thomas,

  990. he says peace.

  991. And then notice thirdly,

  992. Jesus calls him to faith.

  993. He calls him to faith.

  994. Do not disbelieve, Thomas.

  995. But believe.

  996. Now I love that

  997. Jesus hasn't appeared

  998. to the disciples

  999. since that night

  1000. a week before.

1001. At least it doesn't appear

1002. that way in the scriptures.

1003. Thomas has not yet seen Jesus.

  1004. Jesus wasn't there physically.

  1005. Wasn't there physically

1006. when Thomas tells the disciples,

1007. unless I put my fingers

  1008. in his wounds,

  1009. I will not believe.

1010. But notice that the first thing

1011. Jesus says after he announces

1012. his peace is he says,

1013. Thomas, put your finger here.

  1014. Put your finger here.

  1015. Faith is necessary.

1016. But God does not bring us,

1017. he does not demand of us

  1018. a blind faith.

  1019. He gives us verifiable

  1020. evidence for that faith.

1021. And he reaches out his hand

  1022. and he says,

  1023. put your finger here.

  1024. Put your finger here.

  1025. Put your hand here.

  1026. See me.

  1027. Touch me, Thomas.

  1028. Don't disbelieve.

  1029. Believe.

  1030. And after showing Thomas

  1031. his wounds,

  1032. he calls him

  1033. to stop doubting,

  1034. to believe.

  1035. You see,

  1036. the only way

  1037. to receive the peace

  1038. won by Christ

  1039. on the cross

  1040. is by believing

  1041. in who he is

1042. and what he has done.

  1043. And genuine faith

  1044. does not preclude

  1045. sincere investigation.

  1046. But true faith

  1047. is ultimately

  1048. at the heart

  1049. of the gospel message.

  1050. And saving faith

  1051. is more than just

  1052. assenting

  1053. to historical facts.

1054. It is to turn from sin

1055. and to turn from self

1056. and to turn from doubt

  1057. to trust wholly

1058. in the person of Christ

  1059. alone

  1060. for eternal life.

1061. And it is to this kind of faith

  1062. that Jesus calls Thomas.

1063. And it's to this kind of faith

  1064. that he calls

1065. each and every one of us

  1066. stop disbelieving

  1067. and believe.

  1068. Remember John 11, 25?

  1069. This is again

  1070. in the whole scene

  1071. with raising Lazarus

  1072. from the dead.

1073. But before he does it,

1074. he's talking to Lazarus' sister.

  1075. And he tells her,

  1076. I am the resurrection

  1077. and the life.

  1078. Whoever believes in me,

  1079. though he die,

  1080. yet shall he live.

  1081. And everyone who lives

  1082. and believes in me

  1083. shall never die.

  1084. And then notice

1085. what he says to her.

  1086. Do you believe this?

  1087. Will you believe?

  1088. And Jesus does that

  1089. with Thomas.

  1090. He says,

  1091. look at my hands

1092. and look at my sight.

  1093. See me.

  1094. Listen to me.

  1095. Hear me.

  1096. Will you believe?

  1097. And it's unfortunate

  1098. that Thomas has gained

  1099. this popular nickname,

  1100. Doubting Thomas.

  1101. I say it's unfortunate

  1102. because not one

  1103. of Jesus' followers

  1104. immediately believed

1105. the news of his resurrection.

1106. Not a single one of them.

  1107. When the women

  1108. saw the empty tomb

  1109. and the angels

  1110. said to them,

  1111. he has risen,

  1112. he's not here.

  1113. They didn't believe

  1114. the angels

1115. until Jesus appeared to them.

  1116. And then they go

  1117. and tell the disciples

  1118. and the disciples run,

1119. at least Peter and John do.

1120. They run to the tomb

1121. and they see the tomb

  1122. is empty,

  1123. but they don't believe

  1124. the ladies.

  1125. They go home,

  1126. they're amazed

  1127. at the circumstance,

1128. but they do not believe

  1129. the message

  1130. until the risen Lord

  1131. appears to them.

1132. And then we get here

  1133. to Thomas

1134. and we see this dramatic

  1135. refusal to believe

  1136. until his conditions

  1137. are met

  1138. and we give him

  1139. this name,

  1140. Doubting Thomas,

  1141. but he's no different

1142. than any of the others.

  1143. He's no different

  1144. than any of us.

1145. And I want you to notice

  1146. that the scripture

  1147. never says

  1148. that Thomas actually

  1149. went so far

1150. as to touch Jesus' wounds.

  1151. He doesn't say

  1152. he did that.

  1153. He doesn't say

  1154. he actually touched him.

  1155. I don't think

  1156. he had to

  1157. because an encounter

  1158. with the risen Lord

1159. is all that it took.

  1160. Coming to him,

  1161. announcing his peace,

  1162. and saying,

  1163. believe,

  1164. calling him to faith.

  1165. A personal encounter

  1166. with the risen Christ

  1167. is necessary

  1168. for saving faith.

  1169. It's necessary.

  1170. But that doesn't mean

  1171. we must physically see

  1172. and touch Jesus

  1173. to believe.

  1174. Jesus said

  1175. that our stubborn hearts

  1176. are moved to faith

  1177. through the work

  1178. of his spirit.

  1179. John chapter 16.

    John 16 chapter mention

  1180. When the spirit

  1181. of truth comes,

  1182. he will guide you

  1183. into all truth.

  1184. He will not speak

  1185. on his own authority,

  1186. but whatever he hears,

  1187. he will speak.

  1188. And he will declare

  1189. to you the things

  1190. that are to come.

  1191. He will glorify me.

  1192. For he will take

  1193. what is mine

1194. and declare it to you.

  1195. In other words,

  1196. what the spirit's

  1197. going to do

1198. is he's going to say

  1199. everything that relates

  1200. to me.

  1201. He's going to glorify

  1202. my death and resurrection.

  1203. He's going to open

  1204. your hearts to believe.

  1205. And what you need

  1206. this morning

  1207. is not for Jesus

  1208. to appear before you.

  1209. What you need

  1210. is for his spirit

  1211. to move within you

  1212. because an encounter

  1213. with the risen Christ

  1214. through the work

  1215. of the spirit

  1216. is essential

  1217. for saving faith.

1218. If you don't have it,

1219. you will not be saved.

  1220. You cannot be saved

1221. because you will not believe.

  1222. So,

1223. we see an unbelieving heart.

  1224. We see encountering

  1225. the risen Christ.

  1226. Thirdly and finally,

  1227. we see responding

  1228. in faith.

  1229. Responding in faith.

  1230. Verse 28,

  1231. Thomas answered him,

1232. my Lord and my God.

1233. And Jesus said to him,

  1234. have you believed

1235. because you have seen me?

  1236. And he's not saying

  1237. that's a bad thing.

  1238. He's just acknowledging

  1239. that's the reality

  1240. of what has happened.

  1241. Have you believed

  1242. because you've seen me?

  1243. Blessed are those

  1244. who have not seen

  1245. and yet have believed.

  1246. Blessed are those

1247. who have not seen me

  1248. yet they believe me.

  1249. Blessed are those

  1250. who do not have

1251. all of their questions answered

  1252. and yet they believe.

  1253. Blessed are those

  1254. who are still wondering

  1255. and still struggling

  1256. with hurt and doubt

  1257. and all the things

  1258. yet they believe.

  1259. Blessed they are.

1260. And this is the only

  1261. appropriate response

  1262. to an encounter

  1263. with the risen Lord.

  1264. Notice Thomas' affirmation

  1265. is twofold.

  1266. He says,

  1267. my Lord,

  1268. showing he was now

  1269. wholly committing

  1270. his life to follow

  1271. and obey Jesus.

  1272. My Lord,

  1273. my God.

  1274. Proclaiming that Jesus

  1275. would forever be

  1276. the object of his

  1277. affection and worship.

  1278. Loved ones,

1279. this is true saving faith.

  1280. It does not merely

1281. agree to a set of facts.

1282. It is taking those truths

  1283. and casting yourself

  1284. wholly on Christ

  1285. as Lord

  1286. and Savior

  1287. and God

1288. turning away from all else

  1289. and saying,

  1290. my Lord,

  1291. my God,

  1292. I will follow you.

  1293. I will obey you.

  1294. I will love you.

  1295. I will worship you.

1296. That is true saving faith.

  1297. Now notice Jesus' reply.

  1298. It was necessary

  1299. for all the apostles

1300. to have a physical encounter

  1301. with Jesus

  1302. after his resurrection.

  1303. That was actually something

  1304. that must have happened.

  1305. He had specifically

  1306. chosen them

  1307. to be his witnesses,

  1308. particularly witnesses

  1309. of his life

  1310. and his death

  1311. and his resurrection.

  1312. But that would be

1313. impossible for them to be

  1314. if they had not

  1315. actually witnessed it.

  1316. At some point,

1317. Jesus was going to appear

  1318. physically

  1319. to Thomas

  1320. because that's why

  1321. he had chosen Thomas.

  1322. He had chosen him

  1323. for that purpose

1324. and you can read about that

1325. further in Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

1326. But Jesus also says here

  1327. in verse 29

  1328. that all who believe

  1329. without seeing him

  1330. as a result

  1331. of the apostles' witness

1332. that we read even now

1333. that they would be blessed.

1334. And blessed in this case

1335. is not simply a word

  1336. for happiness.

1337. That's not what he means.

  1338. It means that all

  1339. who believe in Christ

  1340. will receive

  1341. the eternal blessing

  1342. of God

  1343. in forgiveness of sin

  1344. and peace with him.

  1345. That's the blessing.

1346. And it does not come

  1347. through your best effort.

1348. It comes through your faith.

  1349. Faith in what?

  1350. Faith in Christ

  1351. according to the witness

  1352. of the apostles

1353. in the word of God.

  1354. That's the faith.

  1355. Peter wrote about it.

  1356. 1 Peter 1

1357. Though you have not seen him

  1358. you love him.

1359. Though you do not now see him

  1360. you believe in him

  1361. and rejoice with joy

  1362. that is inexpressible

  1363. and filled with glory

  1364. obtaining the outcome

  1365. of your faith

  1366. which is the salvation

  1367. of your souls

  1368. without having ever seen

  1369. the physical Christ.

  1370. Has this ever been

  1371. your response to Christ?

  1372. My guess

  1373. in getting to know

  1374. all the people

1375. that are in this room

  1376. at this point

  1377. my guess is that

  1378. this is not your

  1379. first Easter service.

  1380. You've probably been

  1381. to many

  1382. maybe dozens.

  1383. You've heard the stories

  1384. you've read the chapters

1385. maybe you read them again

  1386. this morning

  1387. in your personal devotions

  1388. you're willing to assent

  1389. to the historical facts

  1390. because you can't find

1391. a way to disprove them

  1392. at least

1393. so you might as well

  1394. agree that

  1395. okay this must have

  1396. happened

1397. but has this ever been

  1398. your response

  1399. to those things?

  1400. My Lord

  1401. my God

  1402. it's one thing

  1403. to be friendly

  1404. toward Christ

  1405. and Christianity

  1406. but salvation

  1407. belongs only

1408. to those who trust him

  1409. as Lord

  1410. and God

  1411. it is not enough

  1412. to be a friend

  1413. of Christians

  1414. you must be

  1415. a Christian

  1416. and you cannot

  1417. be a Christian

  1418. without faith

  1419. in his gospel

  1420. you can't

  1421. let's finish

  1422. with verses

  1423. 30 and 31

  1424. John says

  1425. now Jesus

  1426. did many other signs

  1427. in the presence

  1428. of the disciples

  1429. which are not

  1430. written in this book

  1431. but these are written

1432. so that you may believe

  1433. that Jesus

  1434. is the Christ

  1435. the Son of God

  1436. and that by believing

  1437. you may have life

  1438. in his name

1439. it's through the Holy Spirit

  1440. of God

  1441. that Jesus

  1442. comes to us

  1443. and announces his peace

1444. and calls us to faith

1445. but it is the written

  1446. word of God

  1447. that the Spirit

  1448. uses

  1449. to draw us

  1450. to faith

1451. and to give us life

1452. in all of the evidence

  1453. supporting Jesus

  1454. his resurrection

  1455. of all of it

  1456. nothing is as powerful

  1457. and as necessary

  1458. as the testimony

  1459. of God

  1460. in the Bible

  1461. more than any other

  1462. historical figure

  1463. or historical document

1464. you can read all about

  1465. Josephus'

  1466. estimations of Christians

  1467. and what they believed

1468. and what his thoughts were

  1469. on the apostles

  1470. on the apostles

  1471. and on their faith

  1472. none of that compares

  1473. to the power

  1474. of the written word

  1475. of God

1476. it is our highest authority

  1477. it is our most

  1478. preeminent

  1479. evidence

  1480. because it comes

  1481. directly from him

  1482. Romans 10 17

  1483. so faith comes

  1484. by hearing

  1485. hearing comes

  1486. through the word

  1487. of Christ

  1488. the Bible

  1489. the scriptures

  1490. God used John

  1491. to write these things

1492. so that we would believe

1493. that Jesus is the Messiah

1494. and the Son of God

  1495. and that by believing

  1496. we would receive

  1497. eternal life

  1498. through him

  1499. because the resurrection

  1500. is the very pinnacle

  1501. of the case

  1502. for Christ

  1503. without the resurrection

  1504. there is no Christianity

  1505. it doesn't exist

  1506. and without believing

  1507. in the resurrection

1508. you cannot be a Christian

  1509. Romans 10 verse 9

    Romans 10:9

  1510. if you confess

  1511. with your mouth

  1512. that Jesus

  1513. is Lord

  1514. and believe

  1515. in your heart

  1516. that God

  1517. raised him

  1518. from the dead

  1519. you will be saved

  1520. nothing more

  1521. nothing less

  1522. without the resurrection

1523. there is no Christian faith

  1524. and without believing

  1525. in the resurrection

  1526. you cannot be

  1527. a Christian

  1528. and my curiosity

  1529. this morning

  1530. is to think of

  1531. how many of us

  1532. are the Thomas

  1533. from verse 25

  1534. you're saying

  1535. unless

  1536. these demands

  1537. are met

  1538. I will not believe

  1539. and what I want

  1540. to call you

  1541. to become

  1542. is the Thomas

  1543. of verse 28

  1544. my Lord

  1545. and my God

  1546. and in the words

  1547. of Jesus

  1548. say to you

  1549. do not disbelieve

  1550. but believe

  1551. asNINGNINGNING

  1552. as
