  1. We don't often do this here in our times of worship, but there are many churches who utilize

  2. the historic Christian creeds and confessions as a vital part of their weekly worship services.

  3. These statements like the Apostles' Creed, or the Nicene Creed, the Athanasian Creed, or

  4. the London Baptist Confession, or the Westminster Confession, or the Heidelberg Catechism,

  5. there are a number of them historically that the church has used. What these statements do is they

  6. helpfully summarize for us and express the core doctrines of the Christian faith.

  7. We must be careful that we never elevate them to the level of Scripture or even above Scripture,

  8. as many denominations and Christian traditions have done. We must be careful not to do that.

  9. We believe in sola scriptura, that the Scriptures are the authority above all else, and even the

  10. statements that we use to summarize these core doctrines that are found in the Scriptures must

  11. be subservient to the Scriptures. And insofar as they agree with the Word of God, they are very helpful

  12. to us, and they can be edifying to recognize them and to meditate on them. When churches incorporate

  13. these creeds and confessions into their corporate worship Sunday by Sunday, they're really following

  14. in the footsteps of Christians from the early church. In fact, our primary text for this morning,

  15. verses 4 through 7, is believed to have functioned as an early creedal statement of early Christians,

  16. or at least perhaps a hymn that would have been sung in the worship of first century believers.

  17. And what a tremendous confession it is. Can you imagine gathering with believers in Crete 2,000 years ago,

  18. and together, either in song, they believed that this was probably used at the baptismal services that they would have,

  19. as you gather for a baptism or maybe in the service, whether you're reciting it or you're singing it.

  20. Can you imagine lifting your voices together, and this is the thing that you say.

  21. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, He saved us.

  22. And you move on from there to talk about the roles of the Holy Spirit and the Son, Jesus Christ.

  23. What a wonderful confession it actually is.

  24. Before we get into the details of what is actually being said here,

  25. let's first acknowledge why Paul is actually using it.

  26. Why has he inserted it here in this passage?

  27. Remember, the structural pattern for chapter 2 and chapter 3 is exactly the same.

  28. Paul begins with exhortations for the Christians in Crete to follow him.

  29. He grounds them in the gospel of grace,

  30. and then he concludes them with pastoral instruction for Titus and the other elders to follow.

  31. In chapter 2, the emphasis is on Christian behavior in the church.

  32. In chapter 3, the emphasis is on Christian behavior in the world,

  33. outside of the church and the testimony that we have before others.

  34. And so as we look at the structure of chapter 3,

  35. that's the reason I wanted to read all 11 verses there just a moment ago,

  36. because we need to see the bigger picture here,

  37. else we'll get lost in the weeds and we won't know exactly.

  38. It will be fruitful for us to dig into 4 through 7,

  39. but it is important for us to know why Paul has it here.

  40. The main appeal is in verses 1 through 2.

  41. We talked about that two weeks ago.

  42. And everything else flows, all the way down to verse 11,

  43. flows out of verses 1 and 2,

  44. where Paul has exhorted Titus to remind the people

  45. to behave in particular ways in the world.

  46. In verses 4 through 7, where we study today,

  47. Paul lays the foundation of God's grace

  48. as the source and motivation for the Christ-likeness

  49. that he has commanded in verses 1 and 2.

  50. And then when we get to verses 8 through 11,

  51. he gives more pastoral instruction,

  52. particularly how Titus and the elders

  53. are to insist on these things

  54. and how they are to discipline people in the church

  55. who do not insist on these things

  56. or perhaps even contradict them.

  57. So Paul takes what might have been

  58. an early Christian creed or hymn,

  59. and under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit,

  60. he employs it to emphasize that God's grace toward us

  61. is the very reason why we should act with such grace

  62. toward the unbelievers around us.

  63. Do you see that in the big picture?

  64. Because I'm going to move on from it,

  65. but I want you to see that first

  66. before we dig into the details.

  67. Paul takes this creed in the middle

  68. and he inserts it to say,

  69. behave this way because this is the way

  70. God has behaved toward you, okay?

  71. That's the motivation, the gospel of grace.

  72. Now, everything in verses 4 through 7

  73. revolves around a single phrase,

  74. and you find it at the beginning of verse 5.

  75. Look at it with me.

  76. He saved us.

  77. He saved us.

  78. Saved here means to be rescued.

  79. And it brings into view the desperate condition

  80. each of us is in as a result of our sin.

  81. We're all guilty before God.

  82. We're guilty of sinning against God.

  83. By nature, we are enemies of God,

  84. destined to face His eternal wrath.

  85. But to be saved is to be rescued

  86. from the penalty of sin.

  87. It is to be reconciled to God in peace.

  88. And when we come to verse 5,

  89. we see the central focus is on this phrase.

  90. God rescued us.

  91. And what did He rescue us from?

  92. Himself.

  93. It was the holy wrath of God,

  94. destined to condemn us for all of eternity.

  95. And it is the loving grace of God

  96. that provides a way for sinners

  97. to be made right with Himself.

  98. He saved us.

  99. And the text emphasizes that this salvation

  100. is God's work of grace

  101. apart from any merit or action of men.

  102. Twice in these short verses,

  103. God Himself is declared to be the Savior.

  104. We see it in verse 4,

  105. the goodness and loving kindness of God,

  106. our Savior appeared.

  107. And then we see it again in verse 6,

  108. whom He poured out on us richly

  109. through Jesus Christ, our Savior.

  110. And all of the saving action in this passage

  111. is attributed only to God and to His work.

  112. You see, salvation is not a reward

  113. for those whose good outweighs their bad.

  114. Salvation is not a debt that God owes us

  115. for religious services that we render to Him.

  116. Salvation is the gracious act of God

  117. whereby He grants forgiveness

  118. and eternal life solely on the basis of His mercy.

  119. And if you forget everything else I say this morning,

  120. I hope you will at least remember this,

  121. that if anyone is to be saved,

  122. it will only be as a result

  123. of the gracious work of God in their life.

  124. And that's the emphasis of this gospel of grace.

  125. It's not only the emphasis of the gospel of grace

  126. in Titus chapter 2 and Titus chapter 3.

Titus 2 chapter mention Titus 3 chapter mention

  127. It is the emphasis of the gospel of grace

  128. from Genesis 1 to the end of the book of the Revelation.

  129. It is all of God's grace.

  130. And we find a particular, wonderful,

  131. glorious statement of it here in this early creed.

  132. The creed declares three wonderful truths

  133. about the saving grace of God.

  134. It tells us when He saved us.

  135. It tells us how He saved us.

  136. It tells us why He saved us.

  137. That's the structure I want to take with you this morning.

  138. First, let's see when He saved us.

  139. When He saved us.

  140. Verse 4,

  141. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared,

  142. He saved us.

  143. Goodness and loving kindness of God

  144. toward the Cretan believers in the context here

  145. is set in contrast with the spirit of those Christians

  146. in Crete toward the unbelievers in the world around them.

  147. They perhaps had fallen into pride,

  148. into rebellion,

  149. into arrogance against the unbelievers.

  150. But in contrast to that,

  151. Paul highlights the goodness and loving kindness of God

  152. that was shown to them when they were unbelievers.

  153. And Paul calls them to show this same grace to others.

  154. The same grace that they had experienced from God,

  155. they were to show to others.

  156. And how had God shown this grace to the Cretan Christians?

  157. His grace was demonstrated through the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  158. And appeared, the word appeared is significant here.

  159. Just like in chapter 2 and verse 11,

  160. it's the same word that we get,

  161. epiphany,

  162. meaning a sudden manifestation or appearance of something.

  163. It is something being made visible.

  164. And what Paul is saying,

  165. or the Creed is saying,

  166. and Paul is saying through the Creed here,

  167. is that the goodness and loving kindness of God

  168. are not abstract ideas

  169. that we just kind of theoretically attach to God up there somewhere.

  170. No, they are tangible realities

  171. that we see in the person and the work of Jesus.

  172. In other words,

  173. if you want to see the goodness and the loving kindness of God,

  174. look at Jesus.

  175. If you want to see the grace of God,

  176. look at Jesus.

  177. That is how God has manifested his grace.

  178. Another way to say it is to say this,

  179. but God shows his love for us

  180. in that while we were still sinners,

  181. Christ died for us.

  182. Or we might could say it another way.

  183. We were by nature children of wrath,

  184. like the rest of mankind.

  185. But God, being rich in mercy,

  186. because of the great love with which he loved us,

  187. even when we were dead in our trespasses,

  188. made us alive together with Christ.

  189. By grace you have been saved.

  190. It's the theme of the Bible.

  191. It's everywhere.

  192. Now I want you to notice here in verse four

  193. that the timestamp of our salvation

  194. is given in the past tense.

  195. When the goodness and loving kindness of God appeared,

  196. the person and work of Jesus in the past,

  197. he saved us in the past.

  198. How are we to understand this?

  199. Simply reverse the phrases

  200. to see it maybe a little bit more clearly.

  201. He saved us when the goodness

  202. and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared.

  203. And I want to take just a moment to show you

  204. why I think this is so significant.

  205. Don't turn me off yet.

  206. This is good.

  207. I want you to think about the various dimensions

  208. of salvation recorded in the Bible.

  209. The first thing I want to point out to you

  210. is that our salvation was determined

  211. before the world began.

  212. So in eternity past,

  213. God sets his love on his people.

  214. We see that in Ephesians chapter one.

  215. He chose us in Christ

  216. before the foundation of the world

  217. that we should be holy

  218. and blameless before him.

  219. In love, he predestined us for adoption

  220. to himself as sons through Jesus Christ

  221. according to the purpose of his will,

  222. to the praise of his glorious grace

  223. with which he has blessed us in the beloved.

  224. What does he mean by that?

  225. That our salvation in one sense

  226. was determined before we were ever even created.

  227. Indeed, before anything else was ever created.

  228. But then we see our salvation is confirmed

  229. at the moment of conversion.

  230. It is determined before the world began.

  231. It's confirmed at the moment of conversion.

  232. Romans chapter 10.

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  233. Because if you confess with your mouth

  234. that Jesus is Lord

  235. and believe in your heart

  236. that God raised him from the dead,

  237. you will be saved.

  238. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord

  239. will be saved.

  240. If someone were to come to you this afternoon

  241. and they said,

  242. hey, I heard you are a Christian.

  243. I've heard that being a Christian

  244. means that you have to be saved.

  245. Tell me, when were you saved?

  246. Your immediate reaction

  247. is gonna go to the moment of your conversion

  248. because that's the moment

  249. that your salvation

  250. graciously given to you by Jesus Christ

  251. was confirmed

  252. through your faith in Jesus Christ

  253. and his finished work.

  254. So salvation is determined

  255. before the world began.

  256. It's confirmed at the moment of our conversion.

  257. Thirdly, our salvation will be completed

  258. at Christ's return.

  259. will be completed at Christ's return.

  260. Hebrews chapter 9.

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  261. So Christ, having been offered once

  262. to bear the sins of many,

  263. will appear a second time.

  264. He's coming back.

  265. Not to deal with sin,

  266. but to save those

  267. who are eagerly waiting for him.

  268. Now, I thought we were already saved.

  269. If we know Christ,

  270. God has predestined it

  271. before the world's began.

  272. It was confirmed at the moment

  273. that I trusted Christ.

  274. Why is he saying that I won't be saved

  275. until Jesus returns?

  276. Because there's this past,

  277. present, future dimension to salvation.

  278. We are saved.

  279. We have been saved.

  280. We are being saved.

  281. The gospel is transforming us

  282. by the work of the Holy Spirit

  283. to be more like Christ.

  284. We will be saved.

  285. That is one day.

  286. All of this will be brought to completion.

  287. Glorified.

  288. No more sin.

  289. No more death.

  290. No more disease.

  291. It will all be over.

  292. We will be saved,

  293. and we will be with him in eternity.

  294. And I say all of that to say this.

  295. It's determined before,

  296. confirmed at conversion,

  297. completed at Christ's return,

  298. but it is secured at the cross.

  299. Our salvation is secured at the cross.

  300. We read it last week, John 19, 30.

  301. When Jesus had received the sour wine,

  302. he said, what's the next three words?

  303. It is finished.

  304. It's finished.

  305. It's done.

  306. What's done?

  307. Everything necessary for our salvation

  308. was done.

  309. It was complete.

  310. We were saved.

  311. It was secured at the cross.

  312. The salvation of sinners is God's work

  313. from beginning to end.

  314. It's his plan, born of his mercy.

  315. And if you are in Christ today,

  316. it's not because you met a certain standard,

  317. and it's not because you fulfilled

  318. your religious duty.

  319. Your salvation was won and secured

  320. at the cross when Jesus bore the wrath of God

  321. in your place,

  322. making a once-for-all time atonement

  323. for your sin.

  324. We were saved when the goodness

  325. and loving kindness of God appeared,

  326. and how did it appear?

  327. In the cross of Jesus.

  328. And if God secured your salvation

  329. at the cross,

  330. he will see it through to the end.

  331. He will see it through.

  332. He will not say,

  333. your redemption is good for now,

  334. but if you cross me again,

  335. I'm taking it away.

  336. No, it's secured.

  337. It's been secured for 2,000 years.

  338. Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  339. Think about this.

  340. This is so awesome.

  341. Romans 8.

  342. For those whom he foreknew,

  343. he predestined to be conformed

  344. to the image of his Son,

  345. in order that he might be the firstborn

  346. among many brothers.

  347. And those whom he predestined,

  348. he called.

  349. Those whom he called,

  350. he justified.

  351. Those whom he justified,

  352. he glorified.

  353. What shall we then say to these things?

  354. If God is for us,

  355. who can be against us?

  356. When did he save us?

  357. When the goodness and love

  358. and kindness of God appeared.

  359. When did that appear?

  360. On the cross.

  361. Our salvation was secured.

  362. It was God's work from beginning to end.

  363. And it's the only place

  364. that we can begin at this point

  365. in this creed.

  366. When he saved us.

  367. Secondly,

  368. how did he save us?

  369. How did he save us?

  370. Verse 5.

  371. He saved us,

  372. not because of works

  373. done by us in righteousness,

  374. but according to his own mercy,

  375. by the washing of regeneration

  376. and renewal of the Holy Spirit,

  377. whom he poured out on us richly

  378. through Jesus Christ,

  379. our Savior.

  380. Again, Paul is very quick here

  381. to remind us

  382. that our salvation

  383. does not come as a result

  384. of anything that we do.

  385. And here's why.

  386. We cannot possibly

  387. be saved by our own righteousness

  388. because according to verse 3,

  389. put your eye back on it.

  390. According to verse 3,

  391. before God's gracious intervention

  392. in our lives,

  393. what were we?

  394. We were foolish.

  395. Led astray.

  396. Slaves to sin.

  397. So on and so forth.

  398. A foolish person.

  399. A person that is led astray.

  400. A person that is a slave to sin.

  401. This is a picture

  402. of all of those

  403. who are without Christ.

  404. That kind of person

  405. will not just wake up one day

  406. and decide,

  407. you know what?

  408. I think I'm going to be

  409. a Christian now.

  410. It doesn't work like that.

  411. No.

  412. So how does God save us?

  413. Without the righteousness of Christ

  414. being imputed to us,

  415. our very best efforts

  416. are worthlessly ineffective.

  417. You can go to church every Sunday.

  418. You can give in the offering

  419. every week.

  420. You can do all the things.

  421. You can greet all the people.

  422. You can fulfill

  423. and tick all your boxes

  424. on the religious things.

  425. And it will be completely ineffective

  426. for your salvation.

  427. Why?

  428. Because he saved us

  429. not because of works done by us.

  430. It's not about us.

  431. It's not about our righteousness.

  432. Our righteousness

  433. will never be good enough.

  434. Paul knew this

  435. better than anybody.

  436. Remember in Philippians chapter 3,

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  437. Paul says,

  438. if anyone else thinks

  439. that he has a reason

  440. for confidence in the flesh,

  441. I have more.

  442. And he goes through his pedigree.

  443. Circumcised the eighth day.

  444. Tribe of Benjamin.

  445. Hebrew of Hebrews.

  446. As to the law,

  447. a Pharisee.

  448. That means that he kept it

  449. to the nth degree.

  450. As to zeal,

  451. a persecutor of the church,

  452. thinking he was fulfilling

  453. the will of God.

  454. As to righteousness

  455. under the law,

  456. blameless, he says.

  457. But whatever gain I had,

  458. I count it as loss

  459. for the sake of Christ.

  460. Indeed,

  461. I count everything as loss

  462. because of the surpassing worth

  463. of knowing Jesus my Lord.

  464. For his sake,

  465. I have suffered the loss

  466. of all things

  467. and count them as rubbish,

  468. he says.

  469. Rubbish.

  470. All of the righteous efforts

  471. that you've put in

  472. are nothing but trash,

  473. Paul says.

  474. Because the only way

  475. to know Christ

  476. is through faith,

  477. by his grace.

  478. So if God doesn't save us

  479. through self-righteous works,

  480. how does he then save us?

  481. And the answer

  482. is succinctly given here

  483. in verses 5 and 6.

  484. And it has everything

  485. to do with God's grace.

  486. But what I love so much

  487. about this creed

  488. is that it is ultimately

  489. Trinitarian,

  490. revealing how the Father

  491. and the Son

  492. and the Holy Spirit

  493. work together

  494. for our salvation.

  495. Bill Mountain

  496. said it this way.

  497. This passage has one

  498. of the most elegant

  499. descriptions of the Trinity

  500. anywhere in the New Testament.

  501. It shows the three members

  502. of the Godhead

  503. actively involved

  504. in the salvation of sinners.

  505. God the Father

  506. as planner and initiator.

  507. God the Son,

  508. Jesus Christ,

  509. as the agent of redemption.

  510. That's verse 6.

  511. And the Holy Spirit

  512. as the instrument

  513. of regeneration

  514. and renewal.

  515. That's verse 5.

  516. Gordon Fee calls it

  517. an inerrant Trinitarianism

  518. that sees Father,

  519. Son, and Spirit

  520. working co-jointly

  521. jointly for our salvation.

  522. And why does that matter?

  523. Because our salvation

  524. is all of God.

  525. So how then

  526. does God save us?

  527. Well, the entire plan

  528. of redemption

  529. is based on the Father's mercy

  530. that has been revealed

  531. to us in the sacrifice

  532. of His Son.

  533. We've touched

  534. on those already.

  535. Let me focus now

  536. for our time this morning

  537. on this work

  538. of the Holy Spirit

  539. in verse 5.

  540. There's a two-fold work

  541. that is stated here.

  542. Two words are given.

  543. Regeneration

  544. and renewal.

  545. Regeneration,

  546. the kids have learned this

  547. in Adventure Club.

  548. Kids,

  549. what does it mean

  550. to be regenerated?

  551. Do you remember?

  552. Gus,

  553. it means to be born again.

  554. That's exactly right.

  555. Regeneration means

  556. to recreate,

  557. to bring to life again.

  558. It's when sinners

  559. who are dead

  560. in their trespasses

  561. and sins

  562. are cleansed from sin,

  563. awakened to new life

  564. in Christ Jesus.

  565. And in John chapter 3,

    John 3 chapter mention

  566. Jesus called it,

  567. as Gus said,

  568. being born again.

  569. John chapter 3,

    John 3:5

  570. verse 5,

  571. Jesus answered Nicodemus,

  572. truly I say to you,

  573. unless one is born

  574. of water and of the Spirit,

  575. water there being

  576. the cleansing of sin

  577. by the Holy Spirit

  578. and being born of the Spirit

  579. being the regenerating work,

  580. unless one is born

  581. of water and the Spirit,

  582. he cannot enter

  583. the kingdom of God.

  584. He cannot be saved.

  585. That which is born

  586. of the flesh is flesh.

  587. That which is born

  588. of the Spirit is Spirit.

  589. And he says,

  590. do not marvel

  591. that I said this to you.

  592. The wind blows

  593. where it wishes.

  594. You hear it sound.

  595. You do not know

  596. where it comes from

  597. or where it goes.

  598. So it is with those

  599. who are born

  600. of the Spirit.

  601. The Holy Spirit's

  602. work in regeneration.

  603. The wind blows.

  604. The wind of the Spirit

  605. blows when the Word of God

  606. is declared

  607. and the Gospel

  608. is declared.

  609. And the Holy Spirit

  610. does this.

  611. Sin,

  612. cleansing,

  613. regenerating work

  614. where he takes

  615. dead sinners

  616. and he gives them

  617. new life.

  618. The regenerating power

  619. of the Holy Spirit.

  620. The second word

  621. is renewal.

  622. Renewal refers

  623. to the quality

  624. of life

  625. that is given

  626. to us

  627. by God's Spirit.

  628. And it is a life

  629. that is distinctly

  630. different

  631. from the one before.

  632. That's Paul's point here.

  633. Think about it

  634. in Romans 12 too

  635. where the same word

  636. is used.

  637. Do not be conformed

  638. to this world

  639. but be transformed

  640. by what?

  641. The renewal

  642. of your mind.

  643. Don't be like the world.

  644. Be transformed

  645. by the renewal

  646. of your mind.

  647. Well you can't renew

  648. your own mind.

  649. That's the work

  650. of God's Spirit

  651. according to the Word.

  652. The Holy Spirit

  653. transforms us.

  654. He renews us.

  655. How about Colossians 3?

  656. Do not lie

  657. to one another

  658. seeing that you have

  659. put off the old self

  660. with its practices

  661. and have put on

  662. the new self

  663. which is being

  664. renewed

  665. in knowledge

  666. after the image

  667. of its creator.

  668. It's this work

  669. of sanctification

  670. that the Holy Spirit does.

  671. He brings us back

  672. to life

  673. and he renews

  674. the quality

  675. of that life

  676. to be distinctly

  677. different from

  678. what we were before.

  679. So he not only

  680. gives us life

  681. he gives us

  682. a different kind.

  683. And this regeneration

  684. and renewal

  685. is part and parcel

  686. of the motivation

  687. behind our pursuit

  688. of Christ-likeness

  689. in the world.

  690. It's how it relates

  691. back to the first two verses.

  692. If you have

  693. the Holy Spirit

  694. that has brought you

  695. to life

  696. and is renewing you

  697. actively,

  698. progressively

  699. in your life

  700. in sanctification

  701. you will progressively

  702. change

  703. from being so frustrated

  704. and arrogant

  705. and prideful

  706. to the world

  707. to where you will

  708. now humbly show

  709. the grace of God

  710. and the forgiveness

  711. of God

  712. and the mercy of God.

  713. God does this.

  714. It is his work.

  715. But perhaps

  716. you're wondering

  717. how does the Holy Spirit

  718. actually go about

  719. doing this?

  720. I mean is it just like

  721. you just happen

  722. to be standing

  723. in just the right place

  724. like a person

  725. getting struck

  726. by lightning

  727. and if you just happen

  728. to be in the right place

  729. suddenly the Holy Spirit

  730. just bam

  731. you're there

  732. and it's done.

  733. No that's not

  734. how it works.

  735. The Bible tells us

  736. in Ephesians chapter 6

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  737. that there is a sword

  738. that the Holy Spirit

  739. wields to do his work.

  740. The sword is the word

  741. of God.

  742. The Holy Spirit

  743. accompanies

  744. the Holy Scripture.

  745. The wind of the Spirit

  746. blows in regeneration

  747. and renewal

  748. when the word of God

  749. is preached

  750. and shared

  751. and studied

  752. and what this truth

  753. should do

  754. is radically affect

  755. our efforts

  756. at evangelism

  757. and our spiritual maturity

  758. neither of which

  759. can be fruitful

  760. apart from

  761. the scriptures.

  762. They cannot be

  763. because the way

  764. that the Holy Spirit

  765. does this work

  766. is through

  767. the word of God.

  768. That's why we want people

  769. we want to invite

  770. unbelievers

  771. to a church service.

  772. That's why we don't

  773. want to just

  774. encourage them

  775. to be

  776. like Christians.

  777. We want to encourage

  778. them with the word

  779. to believe

  780. and follow Christ

  781. because it is

  782. the word of God

  783. that the Holy Spirit

  784. uses

  785. to make

  786. the people

  787. of God.

  788. Hebrews chapter 4

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  789. the word of God

  790. is living

  791. it's active

  792. sharper

  793. than any

  794. two-edged sword

  795. piercing

  796. to the division

  797. of soul

  798. and spirit

  799. of joints

  800. and of marrow

  801. and it discerns

  802. the thoughts

  803. and the intents

  804. of the heart

  805. not because

  806. not the book

  807. itself

  808. it's not

  809. that there's

  810. a magic button

  811. here

  812. that if you

  813. just open

  814. your Bible

  815. one day

  816. and you start

  817. to read

  818. through a passage

  819. that there's

  820. something

  821. that comes

  822. alive

  823. out of the pages

  824. itself

  825. and does

  826. some type

  827. of mystical

  828. work in you.

  829. No that's

  830. not how it

  831. works

  832. it's that

  833. it is brought

  834. to life

  835. through the

  836. regenerative

  837. and renewal

  838. work of the

  839. Holy Spirit

  840. as the word

  841. of God

  842. goes out

  843. he always

  844. accomplishes

  845. his purposes

  846. and as he

  847. accomplishes

  848. his purposes

  849. he does it

  850. through the work

  851. of the Spirit.

  852. So how then

  853. has God

  854. saved us?

  855. Not through

  856. anything we've

  857. done

  858. our salvation

  859. rests solely

  860. on God's

  861. sovereign work

  862. of grace

  863. accomplished

  864. through the

  865. death of

  866. Jesus

  867. and the

  868. transformative

  869. power

  870. of his

  871. Spirit.

  872. I know

  873. that was

  874. heavy

  875. and that's

  876. a lot

  877. but perhaps

  878. it'll marinate

  879. on your mind

  880. for a while

  881. when we were

  882. saved

  883. how he

  884. saved us

  885. finally

  886. why he

  887. saved us

  888. why did

  889. he even

  890. do this

  891. if salvation

  892. is God's

  893. work from

  894. beginning to

  895. end

  896. if it flows

  897. out of his

  898. mercy

  899. and through

  900. the

  901. demonstration

  902. of the

  903. love of

  904. Christ

  905. on the

  906. cross

  907. and it's

  908. this

  909. regenerative

  910. work of

  911. his

  912. spirit

  913. if it is

  914. God's

  915. doing

  916. from beginning

  917. to end

  918. why does

  919. he care

  920. to do

  921. it

  922. why

  923. verse 7

  924. so that

  925. it's the

  926. purpose

  927. statement

  928. of the

  929. creed

  930. so that

  931. being

  932. justified

  933. by his

  934. grace

  935. we might

  936. become

  937. heirs

  938. according

  939. to the

  940. hope

  941. of eternal

  942. life

  943. let's

  944. condense

  945. it down

  946. again

  947. he

  948. saved

  949. us

  950. so

  951. that

  952. being

  953. justified

  954. by his

  955. grace

  956. we might

  957. become

  958. heirs

  959. according

  960. to the

  961. hope

  962. of

  963. eternal

  964. life

  965. again

  966. grace

  967. is set

  968. in contrast

  969. with works

  970. of righteousness

  971. and it

  972. reiterates

  973. how God

  974. saves us

  975. but the

  976. ultimate

  977. goal

  978. of God's

  979. gracious

  980. initiative

  981. is to

  982. make us

  983. his own

  984. people

  985. is to

  986. make us

  987. his own

  988. adopted

  989. into the

  990. family of

  991. God

  992. we've been

  993. praying for

  994. the Blevins

  995. for some

  996. time now

  997. they're in

  998. this

  999. waiting

  1000. cycle

  1001. for

  1002. the

  1003. adoption

  1004. of a

  1005. child

  1006. from

  1007. Columbia

  1008. and

  1009. whenever

  1010. the Lord

  1011. sees fit

  1012. to bring

  1013. that child

  1014. into their

  1015. home

  1016. legally

  1017. bestowing

  1018. all rights

  1019. as being

  1020. their

  1021. children

  1022. will be

  1023. given

  1024. to that

  1025. child

  1026. adopted

  1027. into

  1028. their

  1029. family

  1030. belongs

  1031. to

  1032. them

  1033. all

  1034. the

  1035. rights

  1036. all

  1037. the

  1038. inheritance

  1039. all

  1040. the

  1041. things

  1042. belongs

  1043. to

  1044. this

  1045. child

  1046. and

  1047. that's

  1048. the

  1049. image

  1050. that

  1051. God

  1052. uses

  1053. of

  1054. us

  1055. here

  1056. we

  1057. become

  1058. heirs

  1059. if

  1060. salvation

  1061. came

  1062. from

  1063. works

  1064. then

  1065. its

  1066. benefits

  1067. would

  1068. be a

  1069. payment

  1070. that

  1071. God

  1072. owes

  1073. us

  1074. and

  1075. our

  1076. relationship

  1077. with

  1078. him

  1079. would

  1080. be

  1081. merely

  1082. contractual

  1083. and

  1084. professional

  1085. that

  1086. is

  1087. we do

  1088. something

  1089. for

  1090. God

  1091. and

  1092. in

  1093. return

  1094. he

  1095. does

  1096. something

  1097. for

  1098. us

  1099. okay

  1100. if

  1101. it

  1102. was

  1103. through

  1104. works

  1105. that's

  1106. how

  1107. it

  1108. would

  1109. function

  1110. but

  1111. the

  1112. true

  1113. gospel

  1114. is

  1115. so

  1116. much

  1117. more

  1118. glorious

  1119. than

  1120. that

  1121. it's

  1122. amazing

  1123. actually

  1124. because

  1125. salvation

  1126. is of

  1127. God's

  1128. grace

  1129. its

  1130. benefits

  1131. belong

  1132. to

  1133. us

  1134. positionally

  1135. not

  1136. because

  1137. of

  1138. something

  1139. that

  1140. we

  1141. have

  1142. done

  1143. but

  1144. because

  1145. of

  1146. who

  1147. we

  1148. are

  1149. and

  1150. who

  1151. are

  1152. we

  1153. we

  1154. are

  1155. the

  1156. children

  1157. of

  1158. God

  1159. and

  1160. our

  1161. relationship

  1162. to

  1163. him

  1164. is

  1165. not

  1166. contractual

  1167. and

  1168. professional

  1169. our

  1170. relationship

  1171. to

  1172. him

  1173. in

  1174. grace

  1175. is

  1176. covenantal

  1177. and

  1178. personal

  1179. it's

  1180. glorious

  1181. Galatians

  1182. 4

  1183. when

  1184. the

  1185. fullness

  1186. of

  1187. time

  1188. had

  1189. come

  1190. God

  1191. sent

  1192. forth

  1193. his

  1194. son

  1195. born

  1196. of

  1197. a

  1198. woman

  1199. born

  1200. under

  1201. the

  1202. law

  1203. to

  1204. redeem

  1205. those

  1206. who

  1207. were

  1208. under

  1209. the

  1210. law

  1211. that's

  1212. the

  1213. when

  1214. and

  1215. the

  1216. how

  1217. here's

  1218. the

  1219. why

  1220. so

  1221. that

  1222. we

  1223. might

  1224. receive

  1225. adoption

  1226. as

  1227. sons

  1228. and

  1229. because

  1230. your

  1231. sons

  1232. God

  1233. has

  1234. sent

  1235. the

  1236. spirit

  1237. of

  1238. his

  1239. son

  1240. into

  1241. our

  1242. hearts

  1243. which

  1244. causes

  1245. us

  1246. now

  1247. to

  1248. cry

  1249. out

  1250. to

  1251. God

  1252. as

  1253. father

  1254. so

  1255. you

  1256. are

  1257. no

  1258. longer

  1259. a

  1260. slave

  1261. but

  1262. a

  1263. son

  1264. and

  1265. if

  1266. you're

  1267. a

  1268. son

  1269. then

  1270. you're

  1271. an

  1272. heir

  1273. through

  1274. God

  1275. and

  1276. what

  1277. is

  1278. the

  1279. inheritance

  1280. that

  1281. you

  1282. have

  1283. it

  1284. is

  1285. eternal

  1286. life

  1287. that

  1288. was

  1289. won

  1290. for

  1291. us

  1292. at

  1293. the

  1294. resurrection

  1295. of

  1296. Christ

  1297. all

  1298. that

  1299. belongs

  1300. to

  1301. Jesus

  1302. our

  1303. elder

  1304. brother

  1305. now

  1306. we

  1307. might

  1308. say

  1309. all

  1310. that

  1311. belongs

  1312. to

  1313. Jesus

  1314. now

  1315. belongs

  1316. to

  1317. us

  1318. not

  1319. because

  1320. of

  1321. what

  1322. we've

  1323. done

  1324. but

  1325. because

  1326. of

  1327. who

  1328. we

  1329. are

  1330. in

  1331. him

  1332. and

  1333. why

  1334. would

  1335. God

  1336. do

  1337. this

  1338. why

  1339. why

  1340. such

  1341. marvelous

  1342. grace

  1343. there

  1344. is

  1345. only

  1346. one

  1347. possible

  1348. answer

  1349. it

  1350. can

  1351. only

  1352. be

  1353. out

  1354. of

  1355. love

  1356. that's

  1357. the

  1358. only

  1359. answer

  1360. that

  1361. could

  1362. possibly

  1363. work

  1364. Ephesians

  1365. 2

  1366. we

  1367. quoted

  1368. this

  1369. while

  1370. ago

  1371. let's

  1372. quote

  1373. it

  1374. again

  1375. God

  1376. being

  1377. rich

  1378. in

  1379. mercy

  1380. because

  1381. of

  1382. the

  1383. great

  1384. love

  1385. with

  1386. which

  1387. he

  1388. loved

  1389. us

  1390. even

  1391. when

  1392. we

  1393. were

  1394. dead

  1395. so

  1396. his

  1397. love

  1398. doesn't

  1399. come

  1400. because

  1401. of

  1402. something

  1403. we've

  1404. done

  1405. it's

  1406. not

  1407. something

  1408. that

  1409. we

  1410. are

  1411. it's

  1412. just

  1413. his

  1414. love

  1415. because

  1416. it's

  1417. his

  1418. love

  1419. so

  1420. that

  1421. we

  1422. might

  1423. receive

  1424. adoption

  1425. excuse

  1426. me

  1427. that's

  1428. the wrong

  1429. quote

  1430. so

  1431. that

  1432. he

  1433. made

  1434. us

  1435. alive

  1436. together

  1437. with

  1438. Christ

  1439. by

  1440. grace

  1441. you've

  1442. been

  1443. saved

  1444. and

  1445. it

  1446. goes

  1447. on

  1448. we

  1449. sing

  1450. about

  1451. this

  1452. grace

  1453. and

  1454. this

  1455. love

  1456. could

  1457. we

  1458. with

  1459. ink

  1460. the

  1461. ocean's

  1462. fill

  1463. and

  1464. where

  1465. the

  1466. skies

  1467. of

  1468. parchment

  1469. made

  1470. where

  1471. every

  1473. on

  1486. the

  1487. love

  1488. of

  1492. drain

  1493. the

  1498. the

  1499. scroll

  1500. contain

  1501. the

  1502. hole

  1503. though

  1504. stretched

  1505. from

  1506. sky

  1507. to

  1508. sky

  1509. why

  1510. has

  1511. God

  1512. saved

  1513. us

  1514. because

  1515. he

  1516. loves

  1517. us

  1518. because

  1519. he

  1520. loves

  1521. us

  1522. now

  1523. this

  1524. passage

  1525. is

  1526. immediately

  1527. relevant

  1528. on at

  1529. least

  1530. two

  1531. levels

  1532. first

  1533. expresses

  1534. the

  1535. truth

  1536. of

  1537. salvation

  1538. by

  1539. grace

  1540. alone

  1541. it's

  1542. God's

  1543. work

  1544. from

  1545. beginning

  1546. to

  1548. but

  1549. he

  1550. calls

  1551. us

  1552. to

  1553. enter

  1554. this

  1555. love

  1556. by

  1557. trusting

  1558. the

  1559. work

  1560. of

  1561. Christ

  1562. by

  1563. faith

  1564. we

  1565. are

  1566. justified

  1567. by

  1568. faith

  1569. no

  1573. matter

  1574. what

  1575. your

  1578. and

  1579. I

  1580. don't

  1581. know

  1582. everyone

  1583. that's

  1584. here

  1585. today

  1586. I

  1587. don't

  1588. know

  1589. what

  1590. your

  1591. background

  1592. is

  1593. and

  1594. what

  1595. your

  1599. in

  1600. regards

  1601. to

  1604. or

  1605. in

  1606. regard

  1607. to

  1608. the

  1609. things

  1610. of

  1611. God

  1612. but

  1613. no

  1614. matter

  1615. what

  1616. you

  1617. are

  1618. where

  1619. you

  1620. are

  1621. you

  1625. something

  1626. for

  1628. and

  1629. peace

  1630. you

  1631. may

  1632. be

  1633. trusting

  1634. that

  1635. your

  1636. good

  1637. outweighs

  1638. your

  1639. bad

  1640. or

  1645. the

  1646. right

  1647. kind

  1648. and

  1649. amount

  1650. of

  1651. religious

  1653. you've

  1657. and

  1658. you've

  1659. done

  1660. the

  1662. and

  1663. you've

  1664. done

  1665. the

  1666. confirmation

  1667. and

  1668. you've

  1669. done

  1670. the

  1671. church

  1672. things

  1673. you

  1674. do

  1675. all

  1676. the

  1677. things

  1678. and

  1679. you're

  1680. trusting

  1681. !

  1682. Maybe

  1683. you're

  1684. completely

  1685. irreligious

  1686. you

  1687. are

  1688. struggling

  1689. with

  1690. whether

  1691. or not

  1692. you

  1693. even

  1694. think

  1695. that

  1696. God

  1697. is

  1698. there

  1699. that

  1700. he

  1701. exists

  1702. well

  1703. that's

  1704. a

  1705. trusting

  1706. action

  1707. there

  1708. is

  1709. an

  1710. element

  1711. where

  1712. you

  1713. are

  1714. trusting

  1715. life

  1716. and

  1717. peace

  1718. to

  1719. the

  1720. fact

  1721. that

  1722. there

  1723. is

  1724. no

  1725. God

  1726. to

  1727. which

  1728. you

  1729. must

  1730. be

  1731. held

  1732. accountable

  1733. no

  1734. matter

  1735. how

  1736. you

  1737. look

  1738. at

  1739. it

  1740. either

  1741. way

  1742. the

  1743. issue

  1744. eventually

  1745. boils

  1746. down

  1747. to

  1748. faith

  1749. and

  1750. according

  1751. to

  1752. the

  1753. scriptures

  1754. what

  1755. God

  1756. has

  1757. told

  1758. us

  1759. in

  1760. his

  1761. word

  1762. true

  1763. salvation

  1764. only

  1765. comes

  1766. to

  1767. those

  1768. whose

  1769. faith

  1770. is

  1771. in

  1772. the

  1773. grace

  1774. of

  1775. God

  1776. through

  1777. Christ

  1778. that's

  1779. where

  1780. salvation

  1781. lies

  1782. true

  1783. peace

  1784. true

  1785. love

  1786. true

  1787. grace

  1788. can

  1789. only

  1790. be

  1791. found

  1792. in

  1793. Christ

  1794. that's

  1795. the

  1796. first

  1797. way

  1798. that

  1799. we

  1800. apply

  1801. it

  1802. the

  1803. text

  1804. is

  1805. also

  1806. relevant

  1807. because

  1808. it

  1809. shapes

  1810. the

  1811. entire

  1812. perspective

  1813. of

  1814. how

  1815. we

  1816. live

  1817. and

  1818. worship

  1819. doesn't

  1820. it

  1821. when

  1822. we

  1823. understand

  1824. and

  1825. focus

  1826. on

  1827. the

  1828. grace

  1829. of

  1830. God

  1831. it

  1832. will

  1833. always

  1834. produce

  1835. in

  1836. us

  1837. humble

  1838. praise

  1839. humility

  1840. worship

  1841. joyful

  1842. service

  1843. to

  1844. God

  1845. that

  1846. is

  1847. the

  1848. product

  1849. of

  1850. grace

  1851. it

  1852. affects

  1853. the

  1854. way

  1855. we

  1856. view

  1857. and

  1858. treat

  1859. others

  1860. because

  1861. those

  1862. who

  1863. have

  1864. received

  1865. God's

  1866. grace

  1867. are

  1868. keen

  1869. to

  1870. show

  1871. God's

  1872. grace

  1873. and

  1874. if

  1875. you

  1876. find

  1877. that

  1878. your

  1879. spirit

  1880. toward

  1881. others

  1882. is

  1883. arrogant

  1884. or

  1885. harsh

  1886. or

  1887. if

  1888. you

  1889. determine

  1890. that

  1891. your

  1892. worship

  1893. is

  1894. cold

  1895. distant

  1896. mundane

  1897. it's

  1898. not

  1899. because

  1900. the

  1901. structure

  1902. of

  1903. the

  1904. service

  1905. is

  1906. not

  1907. beneficial

  1908. it's

  1909. not

  1910. because

  1911. the

  1912. word

  1913. of

  1914. God

  1915. has

  1916. failed

  1917. it's

  1918. not

  1919. because

  1920. people

  1921. are

  1922. worse

  1923. today

  1924. than

  1925. what

  1926. they've

  1927. been

  1928. at

  1929. other

  1930. times

  1931. in

  1932. the

  1933. world

  1934. it's

  1937. of

  1938. any

  1939. of

  1940. those

  1941. things

  1942. it's

  1943. because

  1944. you've

  1945. lost

  1946. sight

  1947. of

  1948. the

  1949. grace

  1950. of

  1951. God

  1952. in

  1953. your

  1954. life

  1955. and

  1956. the

  1957. only

  1958. solution

  1959. for

  1960. you

  1961. is

  1962. to

  1964. to

  1965. Jesus

  1966. that's

  1971. look

  1972. to

  1973. Jesus

  1977. grace

  1978. and

  1979. love

  1980. of

  1981. God

  1992. to

  1993. worship

  1994. God

  1995. in

  1996. humility

  1997. we

  2000. to

  2001. be

  2002. at

  2004. not

  2012. Sunday

  2013. by

  2015. we

  2016. will

  2017. want

  2018. to

  2019. worship

  2020. him

  2021. at

  2022. home

  2023. we

  2036. to

  2037. understand

  2038. his

  2040. we

  2054. are

  2055. set

  2056. on

  2057. Christ

  2058. and

  2062. to

  2063. understand

  2064. the

  2065. grace

  2066. of

  2067. God
