  1. Well, as is made clear throughout the entire letter, faithful leadership in the local church

  2. is vital to not only having but maintaining a healthy congregation.

  3. And if you think back to the earlier studies in the letter, you'll remember that Titus was

  4. temporarily left in Crete for the purpose of setting things in order so that the churches

  5. in Crete would flourish rather than dissipate and ultimately dissolve into whatever error

  6. or maybe just extinction, that by emphasizing the right things, setting things in order

  7. structurally, doctrinally, the church would continue to grow and glorify the Lord.

  8. And the first step in the process of doing this, as we reflect back on chapter one, is

  9. to appoint elders, elders in each congregation that would faithfully lead and teach and protect

  10. the church.

  11. Titus was to seek out men of blameless character who were committed to the gospel message, who

  12. were capable of teaching it well, and willing to confront those who contradicted.

  13. That's really the three categories that we find repeated throughout the letter.

  14. Sprinkled throughout the letter are these instructions that promote what we might call the basics of

  15. faithful ministry.

  16. And such is our text for this morning, verses 8 through 11, really laying the groundwork.

  17. It's not everything that is involved in faithfulness and ministry, but it is not less than these things

  18. for sure.

  19. And the fact that this text has church leaders as its primary audience, we need to remember,

  20. doesn't make it okay to disregard it if you are not in some sort of church leadership or ministry

  21. vocation or whatever it may be.

  22. And let me give you a few reasons why you need to care about pastoral instructions in the scriptures.

  23. Okay?

  24. Just three things.

  25. There's probably more, but I typically think in threes.

  26. And so I'm going to give you three.

  27. Here's the first reason.

  28. It's in the Bible.

  29. And that's the most important reason, isn't it?

  30. It's in the Bible.

  31. And we know that all scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for us.

  32. That's what Paul says very plainly in 2 Timothy.

  33. All scripture is given by God and is profitable.

  34. And he goes on and describes the way that it is profitable.

  35. So that if we convince ourselves that there is a portion of scripture, no matter how intriguing

  36. it may be or not, if we convince ourselves that there is a portion of scripture that is

  37. unnecessary or useless to us, we make God a liar.

  38. And we end up rejecting the one thing that he said in the Psalms he has exalted as equal

  39. to his own name.

  40. Now, that's not to say that all scripture is equally impactful, because it's not.

  41. Certainly, as we come to issues specifically related to the gospel of Jesus, that impacts

  42. us in a way that reading through the genealogies of the Old Testament just simply does not.

  43. But that doesn't mean that they're not profitable.

  44. Maybe not equally impactful, but they are equally profitable for knowing God, for knowing his

  45. plan of salvation, and for knowing his desires for his people.

  46. And this passage is really no exception to that.

  47. It may be directed to Titus and to the elders, but it is profitable for each and every one of

  48. us.

  49. Okay, so that's the first thing.

  50. Why should we care about this text?

  51. We care first because it's in the Bible.

  52. Secondly, pastoral instruction is a means by which God builds up his people.

  53. So think about this for just a moment.

  54. The issues of this text are not detached from God's general desires for every Christian.

  55. They're inextricably linked to it, actually.

  56. And this is logical for us, isn't it?

  57. Titus was to preach the gospel.

  58. Why?

  59. Because the people must know the gospel.

  60. Titus was to insist on godliness.

  61. Why?

  62. Because the people must pursue godliness in their lives.

  63. So by examining God's instructions for pastoral leadership, we find a greater understanding

  64. of God's desires, actually, for us.

  65. Because when we come and we read this passage, we say, why is it necessary for Jared to do

  66. some of the things that he does?

  67. And when we begin to answer those questions, then we can personalize it and say, oh, I need

  68. to know the gospel.

  69. Oh, I need to live in godliness.

  70. And these instructions are important for that.

  71. Thirdly, if we don't concern ourselves with the qualities and duties of pastoral leadership,

  72. we will inevitably fail at calling qualified men to fulfill the task, right?

  73. How many churches have you been a part of or that you have heard of that in the absence

  74. of pastoral leadership and in the search for someone who will just come and care for the

  75. congregation?

  76. Does not think about what is necessary biblically for the man that will lead, but they look for

  77. all the wrong things.

  78. And in their sincerity of heart, they appoint men who are unqualified for the work that God

  79. has tasked for pastoral leadership.

  80. And what is the inevitable result of that?

  81. The church fails.

  82. The church fails.

  83. It fails.

  84. Leadership's important.

  85. And we need to care about these instructions for those reasons, at least.

  86. Well, the instruction of verses 8 through 11, really, if we think about it, is a practical

  87. outworking of the qualifications of a pastor given in chapter 1.

  88. In fact, set your eyes on chapter 1 and verse 9 and look at the similarities here.

  89. Paul says that as a part of the qualifications of a pastor, he must hold firm the trustworthy

  90. word as taught, apostolic doctrine, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine

  91. and then also to rebuke those who contradict it.

  92. Okay?

  93. That's something that must be true of a man before the church calls him to fulfill the

  94. task.

  95. And why?

  96. Because when we get to chapter 3 and we find the specific instruction for what Titus and

  97. the other elders are supposed to do, what is it that they must do?

  98. They must know the gospel.

  99. They must defend the gospel.

  100. They must instruct according to the gospel and to godliness and to sound doctrine.

  101. And they must rebuke those and deal with those who cause and stir up division contrary to

  102. the truth of God's word.

  103. So this is really just a practical outworking of what should be true in the character of church

  104. leadership.

  105. And again, the passage doesn't describe everything that a pastor must be and do, but it does give

  106. us the essence of faithful ministry, to believe the gospel, preach the gospel, confront those

  107. who reject it.

  108. And there's three basics of faithful ministry that I'd like to point out for you here in

  109. these verses as we work through it, okay?

  110. Here's the first thing.

  111. Paul says, affirm what is profitable.

  112. Affirm what is profitable.

  113. Would you look with me at verse 8?

  114. The saying is trustworthy.

  115. And I want you to insist on these things so that those who have believed in God may be

  116. careful to devote themselves to good works.

  117. These things are excellent and profitable for people.

  118. Now, this isn't difficult to understand, is it?

  119. It's very straightforward.

  120. It's simple.

  121. Titus was to affirm as a matter of first importance the things that are excellent and profitable.

  122. for people.

  123. Which is the pastor's task.

  124. The pastor's task is to focus on what is good and beneficial for the people under his care.

  125. And this concern, in contrast to the false teachers in chapter 1, is not to build a following

  126. that serves personal ambition or gain, but it is to be consumed with the care of souls in the congregation.

  127. Do you see that?

  128. It's very simple to see.

  129. Titus, do the things that are good and profitable for the people.

  130. And of course, a sure sign of a false teacher is that their priorities are self-exalting.

  131. It's not hard to see that when you look around at maybe certain churches or certain celebrity pastors or ministers,

  132. whatever the case may be.

  133. A sure sign of false teaching is self-exalting people.

  134. But it's also not uncommon to see pastors who are orthodox in their teaching,

  135. orthodox in their theology,

  136. at some point become consumed with self,

  137. self-consuming in their priority of ministry.

  138. So that rather than focusing primarily on the care of the people,

  139. they use the church to build their platform.

  140. Being seduced by the false gold of ministry success and whatever it may be,

  141. it's actually quite easy to fall into that.

  142. It's a temptation.

  143. It's a reason we pray for our pastors, right?

  144. Because it's an easy thing to fall into.

  145. It's an easy thing to desire.

  146. And without realizing it,

  147. you begin to lead and to preach and to teach

  148. and to focus on those things that serve your own ambition

  149. rather than what is profitable for the people.

  150. And eventually these church leaders will abandon the things that are profitable

  151. in order to focus on what is profitable for them.

  152. And Paul makes it very clear here

  153. that the things that are excellent for people

  154. and why they are profitable for people

  155. are the gospel of grace.

  156. It's all founded in the gospel of grace.

  157. So first he says,

  158. Titus is to affirm the truth of the gospel.

  159. Look again at verse eight.

  160. The saying is trustworthy, he says.

  161. Now the saying that is trustworthy

  162. is the gospel creed or hymn

  163. that we've studied in verses four through seven.

  164. So there's a flow here.

  165. That's why we read all 11 verses.

  166. Here's the exhortation.

  167. Then he goes through this gospel creed

  168. and he says this saying, this creed, this hymn,

  169. whatever it was and however it functioned in the church,

  170. it is trustworthy.

  171. And what is it that the creed is about?

  172. The message of God's grace.

  173. It's trustworthy.

  174. Which doesn't mean that it's merely worth considering.

  175. It is a statement that affirms its absolute truth.

  176. The gospel is the truth of God.

  177. Preaching it must be a priority of every church leader.

  178. And it must be the central focus of everything that the church is

  179. and everything that the church does.

  180. So that pastors then in their primary responsibility

  181. is to saturate the people with the gospel,

  182. which is not the ABCs of the Christian life,

  183. as some people seem to think,

  184. but it is the A to Z of the Christian life.

  185. It is the beginning and the end.

  186. It is everything.

  187. It is everything that is useful,

  188. not only for conversion,

  189. but as we have studied all throughout this letter,

  190. useful for sanctification,

  191. useful for glorification.

  192. The gospel is the thing.

  193. And we must be saturated in it.

  194. Second, he says,

  195. Titus was to affirm the behaviors

  196. that naturally flow from the message of salvation.

  197. So he says, the saying is trustworthy.

  198. The gospel is truth.

  199. This gospel of grace is the true thing.

  200. And then he immediately says,

  201. look back at verse eight.

  202. He says, and I want you to insist on these things.

  203. Well, what is these things?

  204. Well, it includes the gospel message,

  205. but then it also includes the godly conduct

  206. that's emphasized in verses one and two.

  207. That's what begins the whole thing

  208. is godliness, holiness, Christ-likeness in the world.

  209. And these behaviors involve both actions and attitudes

  210. showing that the work of God in salvation,

  211. it penetrates the deepest recesses of our hearts.

  212. It pervades all of our being

  213. so that if we are truly saturated in the gospel of grace,

  214. we're truly saturated in the teaching of the word of God

  215. as it relates to the person and the work of Christ.

  216. The Holy Spirit in this work of renewal

  217. pervades the deepest recesses of our hearts.

  218. It consumes our whole being

  219. so that the natural overflow of the gospel

  220. is godliness and Christ-likeness.

  221. Do you see?

  222. Do you see?

  223. It's all connected together and it's necessary.

  224. And Paul says, preach the gospel

  225. and insist on the behaviors

  226. that accompany the gospel message

  227. that are part and parcel to the Christian life.

  228. And we must do that.

  229. Why?

  230. Because they're excellent and profitable for people, he says.

  231. But what is it that makes them excellent and profitable?

  232. Why is it that the gospel and these behaviors are profitable?

  233. Well, he tells us here.

  234. The purpose of insisting on these things in verse eight,

  235. keeping them before the people,

  236. is that in having the wonders of God's grace

  237. constantly in mind,

  238. believers will be concerned with displaying

  239. the kind of goodness and righteousness

  240. that shows that they have been grasped

  241. by the transformative power of God's spirit.

  242. Do you see that there?

  243. Just set your eyes.

  244. I know it's distracting this morning.

  245. Just set your eyes with me, please, on verse eight.

  246. The saying is trustworthy.

  247. I want you to insist on these things.

  248. Why?

  249. Why?

  250. So that those who have believed in God

  251. may be careful, concerned,

  252. intent on devoting themselves to good works.

  253. Bill Mount says,

  254. this provides yet another illustration

  255. of the dominant theme in Titus,

  256. that right theology and right practice

  257. are inextricably bound together.

  258. An understanding of the full plan of salvation

  259. leads believers necessarily

  260. into a daily living out

  261. of their commitment to the Lord.

  262. That's the theme of the whole book.

  263. Preach the gospel, Titus.

  264. And if you see that the behaviors

  265. have gone awry in the church,

  266. it's probably because the gospel

  267. isn't being emphasized in the right way.

  268. And by the way,

  269. watch out for the false teachers

  270. that are teaching something

  271. contrary to the gospel.

  272. And here's how you'll know they're doing that.

  273. It's gonna show up in their behavior.

  274. All of these things are linked together.

  275. But the order of this process

  276. cannot be lost in our understanding.

  277. Too many people start with the good works

  278. and then they hope that their efforts

  279. will curry enough favor with God

  280. that he will find them acceptable.

  281. That's where we get this backwards sometimes.

  282. We think that God will find me acceptable

  283. so long as I do the good works.

  284. But what Paul describes here,

  285. the order of it is the exact opposite.

  286. You can do your best

  287. and you can try your hardest,

  288. but it will never be enough

  289. to atone for your sin.

  290. It will never be enough

  291. to bring you into a right relationship with God.

  292. It can't because you can't.

  293. This is why Jesus comes.

  294. This is why God sends his son.

  295. Through his death on the cross,

  296. Jesus, who is the sinless son of God,

  297. takes the wrath of God set against sinners.

  298. His sacrifice was a perfect atonement for sin.

  299. And it is granted eternal life and forgiveness

  300. to all who will believe and follow Christ alone.

  301. The good works in these verses

  302. are not our efforts to earn God's favor.

  303. They are the product of knowing that in Christ,

  304. we already have God's favor.

  305. That's the significance of the order.

  306. That's the significance of our witness

  307. so that in the way that we live our lives,

  308. we don't presume as if we are earning something from God.

  309. We do it as an act of worship to God.

  310. And what is all of that based on?

  311. The gospel of his grace.

  312. We have to begin there.

  313. Titus was to insist on these things

  314. because this is how God's spirit

  315. does his work of regeneration and renewal.

  316. Notice what he says in verse A.

  317. So that all those who believe in God

  318. may be careful to devote themselves to good works.

  319. This is a work of the spirit

  320. that he does in those who believe.

  321. These things are profitable

  322. because as we preach the gospel to ourselves day by day,

  323. God's grace remains our motivation

  324. and source for good works.

  325. Okay, so that's the first thing.

  326. We'll move on.

  327. He is to affirm what is profitable

  328. and what's profitable,

  329. the gospel and its accompanying behaviors.

  330. Secondly, avoid what's worthless.

  331. Avoid what is worthless.

  332. Verse nine,

  333. but avoid foolish controversies,

  334. genealogies, dissensions,

  335. quarrels about the law.

  336. Why?

  337. For they are unprofitable and worthless.

  338. So just as important as affirming what is good,

  339. a faithful pastor must recognize

  340. and avoid those things

  341. that are worthless for the church.

  342. In fact, knowing what things to avoid,

  343. meaning to shun or to turn away from,

  344. is critical to being able to focus on the gospel

  345. and its implications in life and ministry.

  346. You can't have one without the other,

  347. which is a reminder

  348. that there's always going to be distractions in our life.

  349. Always.

  350. There's always going to be things

  351. that pull us away from the basics of the truth of God,

  352. that pull us away from basic godliness

  353. and Christlikeness,

  354. and it's imperative

  355. that we avoid getting caught up

  356. in unprofitable speculations.

  357. That's the genealogies.

  358. Arguments about tradition.

  359. That's quarrels about the law.

  360. And contentious battles over issues

  361. that are secondary to core biblical doctrine.

  362. That's the dissensions, the strifes.

  363. This warning is common in the pastoral epistles.

  364. Think of 1 Timothy 1.

  365. He tells Timothy,

  366. charge certain persons

  367. not to teach any different doctrine,

  368. nor to devote themselves to myths

  369. and endless genealogies

  370. which promote speculations

  371. rather than the stewardship from God

  372. that is by faith.

  373. 1 Timothy 4.

  374. Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths.

  375. Rather, train yourself for godliness.

  376. 2 Timothy 2.23.

  377. Have nothing to do with foolish,

  378. ignorant controversies.

  379. You know that they breed what?

  380. Quarrels.

  381. Worthless ones.

  382. Foolish ones.

  383. Now, we must acknowledge here

  384. that this is not a call

  385. for us to avoid controversy.

  386. It is a call for us to avoid

  387. a certain kind of controversy.

  388. Because the fact is,

  389. not only for a pastor,

  390. but for any Christian,

  391. we must be willing to engage,

  392. engage in certain controversial issues

  393. as they relate to gospel fidelity

  394. and defending the word of God.

  395. And to avoid controversy at all costs

  396. would necessitate failing

  397. to affirm what's good

  398. and what's profitable for the people.

  399. The particular issues at work in Crete

  400. had to do with myths

  401. and traditions and speculations

  402. derived from Judaism.

  403. We see that in chapter one.

  404. You can go back and read that later.

  405. But the primary reason

  406. given for avoiding such things

  407. is that they are unprofitable.

  408. They're worthless.

  409. They're not helpful.

  410. They're not edifying.

  411. They're not actually doing anything good

  412. for the people or for the church.

  413. Are they intriguing?

  414. Maybe.

  415. Are they fun to argue and debate?

  416. Perhaps.

  417. Are they helpful?

  418. Not at all.

  419. They're not.

  420. And loved ones,

  421. this is what we must do

  422. if we're going to discern

  423. whether or not any given issue

  424. is worth our engagement.

  425. We must determine,

  426. is this profitable

  427. or is this worthless?

  428. And you don't have to go very far

  429. to find illustrations for this.

  430. Just yesterday,

  431. I was sitting on the couch

  432. flipping through YouTube.

  433. And in a five-minute

  434. flipping through YouTube,

  435. there's two different videos

  436. that fit this description perfectly.

  437. One was a sermon from a church

  438. I'm not familiar with,

  439. maybe a Calvary Chapel

  440. or something like that somewhere.

  441. I can't remember exactly where it was.

  442. And the sermon was steeped in speculation

  443. relating to the book of Revelation.

  444. And the title of the sermon

  445. was about Russia invading the rest of the world.

  446. It's just,

  447. it's unhelpful speculation.

  448. It's unhelpful.

  449. That's not helping anyone.

  450. That's hurting the cause of Christ.

  451. That's not helping it.

  452. I'll go a little bit further.

  453. Here's another video.

  454. It's a girl who has determined

  455. a secret code

  456. in the genealogies

  457. of the book of Genesis.

  458. And in discerning

  459. all the meanings of the names,

  460. if you put them in just the right order

  461. and you say just the right words

  462. and then you spin around three times

  463. and blow up in the air,

  464. all of a sudden,

  465. you have this mystical knowledge.

  466. And that's really what,

  467. look, this stuff is everywhere.

  468. It's everywhere.

  469. Sometimes it's subtle.

  470. Which is why Paul has to warn even Titus

  471. and just remind him,

  472. don't get caught up in this stuff, Titus.

  473. Don't get caught up in the foolishness.

  474. Don't get caught up in

  475. the speculation

  476. and the arguments

  477. over things that are just

  478. dumb and unhelpful,

  479. which any of us

  480. can be guilty of doing.

  481. If it means standing firm

  482. on the word of God,

  483. defending the gospel of grace

  484. through Jesus alone,

  485. urging believers to live in godliness,

  486. then it's profitable

  487. and we must enter the fray.

  488. We must.

  489. But if it's needless speculation

  490. about the nature and timing

  491. of Christ's return,

  492. then it's unhelpful.

  493. If it involves traditions

  494. and commands of men

  495. or matters of conscience

  496. that spur disunity,

  497. we must avoid it.

  498. If it leads to foolish argumentation

  499. or quibbling over non-essential issues,

  500. we must refuse to be carried away by it.

  501. If we're to be a faithful church,

  502. we must be wise

  503. about what is profitable

  504. and what is worthless

  505. and ultimately dishonoring

  506. to the Lord.

  507. we remember,

  508. as is a common statement,

  509. the main things

  510. are the plain things

  511. and the plain things

  512. are the main things

  513. in the scripture.

  514. We need to remember that.

  515. Don't consume yourself

  516. with pet doctrines

  517. or act as if every point

  518. of disagreement

  519. is necessary

  520. to express

  521. because it's not.

  522. Not only will you exasperate

  523. the people around you,

  524. you'll lose the profitability

  525. of the gospel

  526. because you're not avoiding

  527. the things that really

  528. must be avoided.

  529. Third and finally,

  530. address those

  531. who cause division.

  532. Affirm what's profitable.

  533. Avoid what's worthless.

  534. Address those

  535. who cause division.

  536. Verse 10,

  537. as for a person

  538. who stirs up division,

  539. after warning him once

  540. and then twice,

  541. have nothing more

  542. to do with him.

  543. Knowing that such a person

  544. is warped,

  545. sinful,

  546. sinful.

  547. He is self-condemned.

  548. This is the hardest part

  549. of the whole thing,

  550. isn't it?

  551. If you're just a normal person

  552. that doesn't particularly

  553. enjoy confrontation.

  554. There are those weird people

  555. out there,

  556. maybe you're one of them

  557. that enjoy just to fight

  558. all the time.

  559. For most of us,

  560. this is the difficult one.

  561. You can handle

  562. preaching the truth,

  563. affirming what's right.

  564. It's not very hard

  565. for you to avoid

  566. contentious matters.

  567. But when it comes to

  568. actually actively

  569. addressing error,

  570. it's much more difficult

  571. for us to do,

  572. isn't it?

  573. And in this final portion,

  574. Paul presents

  575. an inevitable situation

  576. and the only proper

  577. response to it.

  578. The situation involves

  579. an individual

  580. actively causing

  581. division in the church,

  582. specifically by

  583. affirming doctrines

  584. and behaviors

  585. that are contrary

  586. to the trustworthy word.

  587. This isn't division

  588. of personality necessarily.

  589. This is not

  590. simple things

  591. that are really

  592. inconsequential

  593. in the big picture

  594. of the health

  595. of the church.

  596. These are things

  597. that are actively

  598. dividing the church

  599. in relation to the gospel

  600. and the behaviors

  601. that flow from it

  602. that he's just discussed.

  603. And the only proper response

  604. to such a situation

  605. is to follow

  606. the biblical process

  607. of church discipline.

  608. Because it's not enough

  609. for a pastor

  610. to affirm the truth

  611. and avoid distractions.

  612. It is basic

  613. to faithful ministry

  614. that a pastor

  615. leads the church

  616. in the critical practice

  617. of discipline

  618. when it's necessary.

  619. Because a church

  620. cannot be healthy

  621. and fruitful

  622. while tolerating

  623. individuals

  624. who trouble the people

  625. with false doctrine

  626. and sin.

  627. Such a person

  628. must be confronted

  629. and they must be confronted

  630. for their own good.

  631. They must be confronted

  632. for the health

  633. of the church

  634. and they must be confronted

  635. for the witness

  636. of God's people

  637. to the world

  638. which in the beginning

  639. of this chapter

  640. in those first two verses

  641. is the central issue.

  642. Is our witness

  643. to the world.

  644. I'll save a fuller discussion

  645. for church discipline

  646. for another day.

  647. You'll be grateful for that.

  648. But let me just

  649. touch on it

  650. as we consider

  651. Paul's instruction here.

  652. There's two categories

  653. that we think of

  654. when it comes to church discipline.

  655. You don't have to remember

  656. these words

  657. but it will be helpful

  658. for you to remember

  659. the category.

  660. First is formative discipline.

  661. We would call it

  662. formative discipline.

  663. You are under

  664. formative discipline

  665. right now.

  666. It is that daily process

  667. whereby

  668. through the word,

  669. through prayer,

  670. through discipling,

  671. God shapes us

  672. and he molds us

  673. and he chisels us

  674. and he builds us up

  675. into the Christians

  676. that he would have us to be.

  677. He makes us more and more

  678. like the person of Christ.

  679. It's not corrective

  680. in nature necessarily.

  681. It's just constantly

  682. we're learning

  683. and we're growing

  684. and we're maturing.

  685. It's formative discipline.

  686. If you remove

  687. certain elements

  688. what we might would call

  689. the ordinary means of grace

  690. even.

  691. If you move

  692. certain elements

  693. it's going to stunt

  694. that growth.

  695. We need the formative discipline.

  696. We need preaching.

  697. You need it.

  698. Not necessarily for me.

  699. You need it.

  700. You just need it.

  701. You need good preaching.

  702. You need discipleship.

  703. You need people around you.

  704. Iron sharpening iron.

  705. You can't live in isolation.

  706. It will stunt your growth.

  707. You need the formative discipline.

  708. You need the ordinances.

  709. You need to witness baptism

  710. as we witnessed it last week

  711. to be reminded of the gospel.

  712. You need communion.

  713. You need to prioritize

  714. of every Sunday in the month

  715. that first Sunday

  716. must be your priority

  717. because that's the day

  718. when we gather around the table.

  719. It's formative.

  720. It's helpful to us.

  721. It's profitable for us.

  722. So that's part of it.

  723. That's not what Paul's

  724. dealing with here though.

  725. Here he's dealing

  726. with corrective discipline.

  727. And corrective discipline

  728. which is the formal process

  729. of confronting a person

  730. in error or in sin.

  731. To modern sensibilities

  732. comes across as harsh

  733. and unkind.

  734. We're not conditioned

  735. by our culture

  736. to think that this is

  737. an appropriate thing.

  738. But the Bible's

  739. not unclear about this.

  740. It's not unclear

  741. about it at all.

  742. And as a church

  743. we need to be careful

  744. to observe it

  745. and to remember it.

  746. Three things

  747. I want to point out

  748. to you about it

  749. that not only are true

  750. about it in this text

  751. but are true about it

  752. throughout the New Testament.

  753. I'll make them simple for you.

  754. The first thing

  755. I want you to see

  756. the people

  757. that are to be disciplined.

  758. The people

  759. that are to be disciplined.

  760. Verse 10

  761. As for a person

  762. who stirs up division.

  763. A specific type of person

  764. is mentioned here.

  765. Not only holds

  766. aberrant beliefs

  767. but is deliberately

  768. troubling the congregation

  769. regarding those beliefs.

  770. That's significant

  771. to what Paul's addressing

  772. and to why he's urging

  773. this type of discipline.

  774. These people

  775. are pot stirrers.

  776. You know what I mean by that?

  777. They throw things out there

  778. just because they like

  779. to see the conflict

  780. that ensues

  781. as a result of it.

  782. They're pot stirrers

  783. by nature.

  784. Their actions

  785. cripple the church.

  786. It leads people

  787. away from the gospel.

  788. It leads them away

  789. from holiness.

  790. And it's not just

  791. that they hold

  792. diverse views

  793. on secondary issues.

  794. As described

  795. in chapter 1

  796. they're insubordinate

  797. to the truth.

  798. They insist

  799. on worthless

  800. and harmful ideas.

  801. They upset

  802. entire families

  803. through their errant doctrine.

  804. They prove themselves

  805. in verse 11

  806. to be warped

  807. and sinful

  808. and their behavior

  809. condemns them

  810. before God

  811. and before the church.

  812. And Paul says

  813. you cannot tolerate this.

  814. You cannot just

  815. let this go.

  816. You must deal

  817. with this

  818. in the church.

  819. Titus chapter 1

    Titus 1 chapter mention

  820. in verse 16

  821. they profess

  822. to know God

  823. but they deny

  824. him by their works.

  825. not just the way

  826. that they live

  827. in the world

  828. but the way

  829. that they live

  830. in the church.

  831. They profess God.

  832. They profess Christ

  833. but they do not

  834. display Christ.

  835. They are detestable

  836. Paul says.

  837. They're disobedient.

  838. They're unfit

  839. for any good work.

  840. That's strong language.

  841. So Paul's not

  842. dealing with

  843. he's not saying

  844. just nitpick

  845. people to death.

  846. He's not saying

  847. scrutinize

  848. one another's lives

  849. and find

  850. every possible thing

  851. that you can find

  852. that's wrong

  853. with everybody

  854. in the church

  855. and if they don't

  856. listen to your opinion

  857. about it

  858. you better bring them

  859. before the church

  860. and get them out of here.

  861. That's not what Paul's saying.

  862. He's addressing

  863. a specific type

  864. of person.

  865. We need to remember that.

  866. Two.

  867. The process of discipline.

  868. How does this process

  869. actually work?

  870. After warning him

  871. verse 10

  872. once

  873. and then twice

  874. have nothing more

  875. to do with him.

  876. Jesus is the one

  877. that gives these parameters.

  878. Matthew 18

  879. If your brother

  880. sins against you

  881. go and tell him

  882. his fault

  883. between you

  884. and him alone.

  885. That's the first step.

  886. If he listens to you

  887. you've gained your brother.

  888. And what a wonderful

  889. thing that would be.

  890. Isn't that the intention

  891. of all of this?

  892. We see error

  893. in somebody

  894. whether it's doctrinal error

  895. or whether it's

  896. a particular sin

  897. and we say

  898. hey let's grab coffee

  899. this week

  900. or maybe we meet together

  901. on a different thing

  902. and you just

  903. you kind of gently

  904. spur them along

  905. and just say

  906. hey I noticed this thing

  907. or you said this

  908. the other day

  909. I think you really

  910. need to think about this

  911. I think you're in error

  912. I think you're in sin

  913. and I think

  914. nine times out of ten

  915. that's what the Lord

  916. uses to restore someone

  917. right?

  918. That's the first step.

  919. Jesus says

  920. that's what you do

  921. and then he says though

  922. he said

  923. but if you won't listen

  924. they're unrepentant

  925. go back

  926. but this time

  927. take one or two others

  928. with you

  929. so that every charge

  930. may be established

  931. by the evidence

  932. of two or three witnesses.

  933. Now why is that all about?

  934. It is not only

  935. for accountability

  936. it's to make sure

  937. that I'm not just

  938. nitpicking somebody

  939. to death right?

  940. Because that could be the case.

  941. There's a protection here right?

  942. That there's just not somebody

  943. that's just cantankerous

  944. that's just giving everybody

  945. a hard time.

  946. So now you go with

  947. probably leaders

  948. in the church

  949. at this point

  950. you go with

  951. with a couple of others

  952. it establishes the witness

  953. there is record

  954. but then it lets

  955. the offending person

  956. know

  957. okay there's a seriousness

  958. to this

  959. because it's not just Jared

  960. who has a problem

  961. with what I'm doing

  962. there's actually

  963. significant people

  964. that I respect

  965. in the church

  966. that are actually

  967. they actually think

  968. the same thing

  969. I need to think about this

  970. something the Lord uses right?

  971. But then Jesus says

  972. what if he doesn't listen?

  973. What if he still

  974. is unrepentant?

  975. He says

  976. we continue on

  977. in Matthew 18

  978. if he refuses

  979. to listen to them

  980. tell it to the church.

  981. This is the point

  982. at where Paul is

  983. in his instructions

  984. to Titus

  985. you bring it

  986. to the congregation

  987. now why would you do that?

  988. Because it lets

  989. the offending party

  990. know

  991. this is serious

  992. and the whole

  993. congregation then

  994. is to woo

  995. that person

  996. persuade them

  997. in whatever way possible

  998. to repent

  999. believe

  1000. alter course

  1001. turn from their error

1002. and what if they don't

  1003. listen to the church?

  1004. Jesus says

1005. let them be to you

  1006. as a Gentile

  1007. and a tax collector

1008. let them be to you

  1009. as an unbeliever

1010. so that if we understand

  1011. church membership

  1012. the right way

  1013. the way we're supposed

  1014. to view that

  1015. in the Bible

1016. it's not that the church

  1017. declares that a person

  1018. is a Christian

  1019. or not a Christian

  1020. that's not the authority

  1021. we have

  1022. that authority belongs

  1023. to Christ

  1024. and to Christ alone

  1025. but in so far

  1026. as a person

  1027. makes a credible

  1028. profession of faith

  1029. and their life

  1030. matches that profession

  1031. the church says

1032. you are one of us

  1033. we welcome you

1034. to the table of the Lord

  1035. we welcome you

  1036. in baptism

  1037. we rejoice with you

1038. we will enter in this

  1039. covenant relationship

  1040. together

  1041. church discipline then

  1042. is the congregation

  1043. itself

  1044. looking at a person

  1045. and saying

  1046. we hear your profession

1047. but we can no longer

  1048. in good conscience

  1049. hold your profession

  1050. as credible

  1051. you're unrepentant

  1052. you're in error

  1053. you're denying the gospel

  1054. therefore

  1055. it will be necessary

  1056. unless you repent

1057. for us to dismiss you

  1058. from our fellowship

1059. not to cut them off

  1060. completely

  1061. so that you never

  1062. see them again

  1063. and you're hateful

  1064. towards them

  1065. no

1066. it's to just treat them

1067. that now you're an unbeliever

1068. you can't come to the table

  1069. now

  1070. this is for believers

  1071. it's not for you

1072. to lead in the church

  1073. it's not for you

1074. to teach in the church

  1075. you're welcome to attend

  1076. but you gotta stop

  1077. with what you're doing

  1078. that's the thing

1079. Jesus is setting forth here

1080. and this is the process

  1081. that Paul is instructing

  1082. Titus to follow

  1083. after warning them twice

  1084. allowing ample time

  1085. for repentance

  1086. give them over

  1087. to the discipline

  1088. of the congregation

  1089. and at that point

1090. they are to be dismissed

  1091. from the church

  1092. and their influence

  1093. is to be removed

  1094. and the elders

  1095. of the church

1096. are to take the lead

  1097. in this

  1098. but according to Jesus

  1099. it is finally

  1100. the congregation's

  1101. responsibility

  1102. to excommunicate

  1103. someone from the fellowship

1104. that is to treat them

  1105. as an unbeliever

  1106. it's not my job

  1107. to determine

  1108. who belongs

  1109. and who doesn't

  1110. it's our job

  1111. to do that

  1112. we do that together

  1113. it's our responsibility

  1114. taking ownership

  1115. of our own congregation

  1116. okay

  1117. that was longer

  1118. than I anticipated

  1119. so first

  1120. we have

  1121. the people

  1122. to be disciplined

  1123. we have the process

  1124. of corrective discipline

  1125. thirdly

  1126. we have the purpose

  1127. of it

  1128. what is the

  1129. what's the whole purpose

  1130. of all of this

  1131. we go back

  1132. to verse 10

  1133. after warning him

  1134. once and then twice

  1135. what's that all about

  1136. why not just say

  1137. hey

  1138. you're

  1139. you're a reprobate

1140. you can't come here anymore

  1141. the process

  1142. was established

  1143. by Jesus

  1144. and carried out

  1145. by the apostles

  1146. to protect the church

  1147. teach the church

  1148. and then to turn

  1149. the sinner

  1150. from the error

1151. to the grace of God

  1152. it's

  1153. this process

  1154. is not about judgment

  1155. it's not about condemnation

  1156. Christ is judge

  1157. it's about restoring

  1158. someone you love

  1159. and striving

  1160. for the purity

  1161. of God's people

  1162. because sin and error

  1163. must be confronted

  1164. but its purpose

1165. is to see the individual

  1166. restored

  1167. to grace

  1168. and to carry out

  1169. such a practice

  1170. with the spirit

  1171. of pride

  1172. or vengeance

  1173. is to sin

  1174. against God

1175. and it is to risk

  1176. destroying one

  1177. for whom Christ

  1178. died

  1179. so the church

  1180. must take it serious

  1181. but they must also

  1182. have the right intention

  1183. and spirit

1184. or you shouldn't do it

  1185. Galatians 6

  1186. and verse 1

  1187. brothers

  1188. if anyone is caught

  1189. in any transgression

  1190. you who are spiritual

  1191. should restore him

  1192. in the spirit

  1193. of gentleness

  1194. humbly keeping watch

  1195. of yourself

  1196. lest you too

  1197. are tempted

  1198. to Timothy 2

  1199. and the Lord's servant

  1200. must not be quarrelsome

  1201. but kind

  1202. to everyone

  1203. able to teach

  1204. patiently

  1205. enduring evil

  1206. so that this discipline

  1207. process is a long

  1208. process in many occasions

  1209. patiently enduring evil

  1210. correcting his opponents

  1211. with gentleness

  1212. God may perhaps

  1213. grant them repentance

  1214. leading to a knowledge

  1215. of the truth

  1216. and they may come

  1217. to their senses

  1218. and escape

  1219. from the snare

  1220. of the devil

  1221. after being captured

  1222. by him to do

  1223. his will

  1224. that's the intention

  1225. to restore them

  1226. not to condemn them

  1227. so error

  1228. cannot be ignored

  1229. divisive people

  1230. must not be tolerated

  1231. and a faithful minister

  1232. in a faithful church

1233. will deal with the problems

  1234. as they come

1235. now we'll finish this way

1236. why is any of this important

  1237. any of this stuff

  1238. in verses 8-11

  1239. even really in the

  1240. chapter itself

1241. why do we care so much

  1242. this isn't the

  1243. edifying types of

  1244. or encouraging types

  1245. of text

  1246. that just

  1247. we leave the service

1248. and we just feel so good

  1249. we learn today

  1250. about what it takes

  1251. to point out

  1252. and enter into

  1253. controversy in the church

  1254. when it's necessary

  1255. right

  1256. that's not the kind

  1257. of service

  1258. that when you

  1259. call your parents

  1260. later today

  1261. and they say

  1262. how was church today

  1263. you say

1264. oh man it was just

  1265. you wouldn't believe

  1266. how awesome it was

  1267. so what's really

1268. the point of all of this

  1269. the foundation

  1270. of all of this

  1271. the purpose

  1272. of all of it

  1273. the reason we care

  1274. is because of

  1275. the preservation

  1276. and the proclamation

  1277. of the true gospel

1278. if we do not care

  1279. to affirm

  1280. what's profitable

  1281. avoid what's worthless

  1282. and contend

  1283. with those

  1284. who would reject it

  1285. we will lose

  1286. the gospel

  1287. we may not lose

  1288. our church

  1289. we may grow

  1290. we may become

  1291. richer

  1292. as a congregation

  1293. we may have

  1294. more successful

  1295. ministries

  1296. but we'll lose

  1297. the gospel

  1298. we won't be healthy

  1299. we won't glorify

  1300. God

  1301. that's the point

  1302. of all of this

  1303. how can we glorify

  1304. God as his people

  1305. well we need

  1306. certain things

  1307. set in order

  1308. we need certain

  1309. structures

  1310. we need faithful

  1311. leaders

  1312. we need the gospel

  1313. to saturate

  1314. everything that we do

  1315. we need to avoid

  1316. the things that would

  1317. distract us from that

  1318. we need to contend

  1319. with those who would

  1320. come in and divide

  1321. the church

  1322. as it relates

  1323. to heretical doctrine

  1324. and to sinful

  1325. practices

  1326. why?

  1327. because we want

  1328. to declare

  1329. and display

  1330. the message

  1331. of salvation

  1332. for the glory

  1333. of God

  1334. that's what this

  1335. is ultimately about

  1336. it's not just

  1337. having structure

  1338. for structure's sake

  1339. it's about glorifying

  1340. God

  1341. it's about faithfulness

  1342. to the truth

  1343. it's about giving

  1344. the gospel

  1345. and displaying

  1346. the gospel

  1347. so that God

  1348. might actually

  1349. bless us

  1350. and use us

  1351. for his glory

  1352. in this life

  1353. that's what this

  1354. is about

  1355. that's why we care

  1356. that's why we don't

  1357. skip it

  1358. that's why we have

  1359. member meetings

  1360. so that we can

  1361. further progress

  1362. in this

  1363. caring about

  1364. these things

  1365. caring about

  1366. the things

  1367. of God

  1368. and of the church

  1369. and though this text

  1370. may have been

  1371. aimed particularly

  1372. at Titus

  1373. and the elders

  1374. it's certainly

  1375. profitable

  1376. for all of us

  1377. to consider

  1378. there's all kinds

  1379. of implications

  1380. here for the

  1381. congregation

  1382. not the least

  1383. of which

  1384. is the command

  1385. to believe

  1386. share and defend

  1387. the gospel

  1388. and to live

  1389. as a gospel

  1390. light in the world

  1391. and if our church

  1392. is going to do

  1393. these things

  1394. it will be

  1395. necessary

  1396. to guard

  1397. against those

  1398. who reject

  1399. the truth

  1400. abound in

  1401. unrepentant sin

  1402. and stir up

  1403. worthless controversy

  1404. these things

  1405. are fundamental

  1406. to what it means

  1407. to be a faithful

  1408. minister

  1409. they're fundamental

  1410. to what it means

  1411. to be

  1412. a faithful

  1413. healthy

  1414. God glorifying

  1415. church

  1416. and we need

  1417. them

  1418. to be
