  1. When I was growing up, it was popular to, among Christians at least, to select a particular verse of Scripture and to kind of claim it as a life verse.

  2. Perhaps you have one or you at least are familiar with the practice of that.

  3. I don't know that it's as common today. I don't really ever hear people talk about this anymore.

  4. But typically, if you're unfamiliar, it involved selecting a particular passage of Scripture that were especially comforting or encouraging or insightful,

  5. not really in specific moments of life, but through various circumstances of life is typically how it would work.

  6. You'd pick one that you could just kind of memorize and recite to yourself across different seasons of life, and this would bring you encouragement.

  7. Some people would use these verses as a way of sharing their testimonies.

  8. Perhaps you have been in a mission service, and a missionary has gone up.

  9. They've quoted, and they've said, I want to begin with my life verse, and they quote the verse,

  10. and then they use that verse to kind of tell their story of conversion or how the Lord has worked in their life to go to the mission field or whatever it may be.

  11. Now, I will caution you and say that in describing that, I'm not necessarily advocating for that.

  12. In fact, I'm not advocating for it.

  13. We never want to read our own lives into the Scriptures.

  14. There's huge problems that come with that, isn't there?

  15. If we kind of take a passage that kind of sounds like what we want to say anyways,

  16. and then we use it to tell a testimony, even though everything we say is good,

  17. we end up saying something of the Scriptures that the Scriptures aren't saying of themselves,

  18. then we kind of get ourselves in a mess, and we don't want to do that.

  19. So I'm not necessarily advocating for that.

  20. Still, it is wonderfully helpful and beneficial to have a practice of memorizing Scriptures,

  21. Scriptures like that, that the Lord will use to call to your mind and bring comfort to your heart,

  22. verses that you can pray again and again.

  23. And I've never had a life verse, but I can say that Psalm 8611 is as close as I've ever come

  24. to having a verse that is just uniquely present at various times of my life.

  25. I return to it.

  26. I find myself praying these words over and over again throughout various circumstances,

  27. constantly coming back and repeating this to the Lord.

  28. Teach me your way, O Lord.

  29. Teach me.

  30. I want to walk in your truth.

  31. Unite my heart to fear your name.

  32. And you'll find that if you pray those words, there's no limit to the situations that you can pray it in.

  33. Every circumstance of life, ultimately, we want to come back to this particular spirit and thought,

  34. Lord, I want to know your way.

  35. I want to walk in your truth.

  36. I want to fear your name and glorify you and who you are.

  37. So in that sense, it's truly a verse that we can live by.

  38. And it's one that I want to take a few minutes to examine and meditate upon this morning.

  39. Now, the uniqueness of it in Psalm 86 is that it's out of place.

  40. At least it seems out of place.

  41. We read through this Psalm, we recognize this is a prayer of lament of David's.

  42. And David is spending most of this Psalm asking God to do a life-altering work for him.

  43. Ruthless, godless, insolent men have risen up against him over and over.

  44. He's asking for God to intervene in that.

  45. In the circumstance that he's found himself in, he's saying, God, please deliver me.

  46. He's asking for God to do this life-altering work.

  47. Please do this thing for me and help me, deliver me, save me.

  48. But when we get to verse 11, it doesn't fit with that dynamic.

  49. He's not asking for God to do a life-altering work for him.

  50. What he's asking God to do in verse 11 is to perform a life-transforming work in him.

  51. Do you see the difference?

  52. Lord, do something about these men.

  53. Do something about this circumstance.

  54. Verse 11, though, is do something about me.

  55. Do something in me.

  56. So it sticks out to us, doesn't it?

  57. It doesn't really make a lot of sense.

  58. Why is he saying this here?

  59. Why does he fit it in to this lament?

  60. And we see this just deep desire come to the surface in David's life where he just really wants to know God.

  61. He wants to know God.

  62. He wants to please the Lord with his life.

  63. Even in the midst of his heartache, his desire at the heart of it is,

  64. Lord, I just want to know you.

  65. I want to please you even in this.

  66. It seems out of place until you step back and you realize that it comes in the midst of David's prayer of praise.

  67. There's three stanzas to the psalm.

  68. The middle one, beginning at verse 8, is really a moment of private worship with David.

  69. It's a prayer of praise, and it's flanked on either side by this lament.

  70. And what we find as we consider that is that it is his worshipful reflection on God's character

  71. and on the work of God's hand that prompts David's prayer for this instruction in righteousness.

  72. It is as he looks at God that he begins to develop a more deep desire to know that God that he's considering,

  73. that he's meditating upon.

  74. Notice the place that it has in David's worship.

  75. Look here just in verse 8.

  76. There is none like you among the gods.

  77. Again in verse 8, there are no works like your works.

  78. Verse 9, all the nations shall worship and glorify your name.

  79. Verse 10, you are great.

  80. You do wondrous things.

  81. Again in verse 10, you alone are God.

  82. Verse 12, I give thanks to you with my whole heart.

  83. Again, I will glorify your name forever.

  84. Verse 13, great is your steadfast love toward me.

  85. You have delivered my soul.

  86. It's right in the middle of worship.

  87. There's no other request here.

  88. His eyes and his thoughts and his heart is fixed on the person and the work of God who he knows him to be.

  89. And it is out of this that comes this unique request.

  90. So we might discern from the structure here that a genuine desire to know and love and obey and worship God flows out of a heart that is already actively engaged in authentic worship.

  91. In other words, worship precedes the desire to more deeply know and glorify God.

  92. Therefore, a lack of sincere longing for God in your life will be directly linked to an absence of the true worship of God in your life.

  93. And you say, I just have this struggle.

  94. Like I see these words that David pray.

  95. I don't think I've ever had a thought quite as emotionally attached and longing for God quite like this.

  96. Or at least it's been a while.

  97. And we would say, well, as we look at David's prayer here, it must be that at the heart of what you're doing in your Christian life is not authentic worship.

  98. It may be religious forms.

  99. There may be other things happening in your life, but it's not authentic worship.

  100. Our worship is directly linked to our desire for God and for his ways.

  101. And our problem at this point may be that we misunderstand what it means to truly worship.

  102. Worship is not merely recognizing a set of facts about God, as David has done in the psalm, but it's not about that.

  103. It's not about recognizing this set of facts about God and then churning them out in kind of perfunctory prayers and songs and hymns that we just kind of select and we just kind of work our way through it.

  104. You know, you've been there.

  105. I know you have.

  106. Worship is a heart level, faith driven, life consuming devotion to God.

  107. That's what worship is.

  108. It's not something that we can box up in a moment or in an hour and a half or in a song.

  109. It is a faith driven, life consuming, heart level devotion to God.

  110. But unfortunately, this is not the natural disposition of our hearts.

  111. We do not inherently long for God.

  112. We don't long for his pleasure.

  113. We long for self pleasure.

  114. That's how our minds think.

  115. That's how our hearts operate.

  116. And sometimes we're tempted to pursue David's request here.

  117. This request for knowledge or this request for righteousness.

  118. But we pursue that without the worship that David has here, which ultimately just amounts to vain religion.

  119. It's cold.

  120. It's burdensome.

  121. It's ultimately ineffective.

  122. Because our desire to know the word, perhaps, or even our desire to live according to the word is detached from authentic worship of God.

  123. We really become no different than the Israelites and some of the prophets when God was so angry with them.

  124. They're doing the forms.

  125. They're doing the things.

  126. But their heart is far from him.

  127. And we can very easily fall into that.

  128. What we need is new hearts.

  129. We need new hearts.

  130. If we're going to grasp David's prayers, our own for sure.

  131. Which means that we need the atoning work of Jesus.

  132. We need the regenerative and renewing work of the Holy Spirit before we can ever experience this genuine desire for God that David exhibits here.

  133. There's three simple phrases to the verse.

  134. I want to group them in two categories.

  135. First, we'll see the ultimate aim of David's prayer.

  136. That's in the middle phrase.

  137. That I may walk in your truth.

  138. Then we want to look at the means that David sees as achieving this desired end.

  139. That's in the first and third phrase.

  140. Teach me your way, O Lord.

  141. And then he says at the end, unite my heart that I may fear your name.

  142. So if we were to just kind of rework the structure of the verse a little bit, it may help us see exactly what David's getting at here.

  143. We could read it this way.

  144. Teach me your ways, O Lord.

  145. And unite my heart to fear your name so that I may walk in your truth.

  146. Do you see that?

  147. The ultimate goal of the prayer is walk in truth.

  148. Teaching him his ways.

  149. Fearing God's name is the way that he knows.

  150. The path that he knows to be to get him there.

  151. So let's think about the aim for just a moment.

  152. That I may walk in your truth, David says.

  153. His desire is to walk in God's truth.

  154. This word walk is important here.

  155. It's significant in the Bible.

  156. It's used over and over in the Bible as an analogy referring to one's manner of life.

  157. So it points to something that motivates our attitudes and our actions.

  158. That's really what the word means.

  159. Let me give you a few examples of this in the scripture.

  160. How about Psalm 1-1?

  161. Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,

  162. but his desire is in the law of the Lord.

  163. What's the psalmist getting at there?

  164. That if you live your life being motivated by,

  165. your attitudes and actions being motivated by,

  166. the counsel of the world,

  167. you will not be the blessed man.

  168. But if you live your life in such a way

  169. that it is motivated by the law of God,

  170. you will be the blessed man.

  171. Walking there is significant.

  172. It is simply what is the thing that's controlling our attitudes and actions.

  173. Mark chapter 7 and verse 5 is another one.

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  174. The Pharisees use it here with Jesus.

  175. Mark says,

  176. In other words,

  177. what they're asking is,

  178. why do your disciples not live according to our law?

  179. Why is their manner of life not following and structured by what we've said in these traditions?

  180. Galatians 5.16 for a positive look at it.

  181. Paul tells the Galatians,

  182. But I say,

  183. Walk by the Spirit,

  184. and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

  185. Well, what does Paul mean by that?

  186. To walk by the Spirit.

  187. To let your life,

  188. your attitudes,

  189. your actions be controlled by,

  190. structured by,

  191. the Holy Spirit's work in your life,

  192. which is automatically going to bring you back to the Word of God in your life as well.

  193. And if you will walk,

  194. live according to the Spirit,

  195. you will then not gratify the desires of your flesh.

  196. There's many, many more we could go to.

  197. You probably get the point.

  198. Our walk is the thing that directs our beliefs and behaviors.

  199. And what David wanted,

  200. guiding every facet of his life,

  201. as we look at this verse,

  202. is God's truth.

  203. What he knew to be true of God's character,

  204. what he knew to be clear in God's commands.

  205. I want the truth of God,

  206. who he is,

  207. what he wants,

  208. being the one thing that drives my life,

  209. that controls my thoughts,

  210. that controls the way that I live.

  211. He wasn't content

  212. with only being acquainted with God's truth.

  213. He was intent on being controlled by God's truth.

  214. There's a distinct difference in that.

  215. William J. was a preacher,

  216. and probably Austin can tell you more about him,

  217. in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

  218. William J. said this,

  219. to walk in anything intends a fullness of it.

  220. And he gave an example.

  221. For a man to walk in pride

  222. is something more than to be proud.

  223. It says that pride is his way,

  224. his element,

  225. that he is wholly under the influence of it.

  226. So likewise,

  227. to walk in God's truth

  228. is something more

  229. than knowing it to be truth.

  230. It's more than acknowledging

  231. that this is God's word.

  232. It's more than acknowledging

  233. that the things that it says are true.

  234. It's more than simply acknowledging

  235. that the God that is described here

  236. is a true God

  237. and that the things that are said about him

  238. are true things.

  239. It's more than that.

  240. It is to make God's truth your way.

  241. It is to make God's truth your element,

  242. to be wholly under its influence in your life.

  243. So walking in God's truth

  244. is not recognizing that morality is right.

  245. Walking in God's truth

  246. is to live morally

  247. because that's what God desires.

  248. Walking in God's truth

  249. is not acknowledging

  250. that kindness,

  251. love,

  252. and compassion

  253. are good and helpful traits.

  254. But it is to be kind

  255. and to be loving

  256. and to be compassionate

  257. because that's what you know

  258. to be true of who God is.

  259. You see,

  260. it's entirely possible

  261. to accept what God's truth is

  262. but not walk in it.

  263. And along these lines,

  264. my concern,

  265. and I know some of you

  266. share this concern with me,

  267. is that there are many people,

  268. perhaps maybe someone even here today,

  269. you are claiming to follow Christ

  270. without actually being Christian.

  271. You have no problems with Jesus.

  272. You don't deny that He is who He is,

  273. that He did what He did,

  274. but there's nothing about that

  275. that is really controlling your life.

  276. You acknowledge it,

  277. maybe mentally,

  278. but you are not surrendered to it.

  279. Or else,

  280. some people,

  281. their discipleship is really

  282. just a matter of convenience.

  283. They accept what they like,

  284. they kind of disregard

  285. what they don't like.

  286. But to walk as a Christian,

  287. to truly follow Jesus,

  288. is to come holy

  289. under the influence

  290. of His truth.

  291. And that we walk in His truth

  292. is God's supreme desire

  293. for all of us.

  294. God wants us to know Him.

  295. He wants us to love Him

  296. and obey Him

  297. more than He wants us

  298. to achieve whatever

  299. our notions of happiness are

  300. in this life and fulfillment.

  301. To walk in God's truth

  302. is synonymous with His purpose

  303. in creation.

  304. That is,

  305. we are here

  306. to glorify Him.

  307. As we reflect Deuteronomy 10,

  308. and now Israel,

  309. what does the Lord your God

  310. require of you

  311. but to fear the Lord your God,

  312. to walk in all His ways,

  313. to love Him,

  314. to serve the Lord your God

  315. with all your heart,

  316. with all your soul,

  317. and to keep the commandments

  318. and statutes of the Lord,

  319. which I am commanding you today

  320. for your good.

  321. What is Moses saying?

  322. This is what God's desire

  323. for your life is,

  324. that you would walk in His truth.

  325. Not that you would merely

  326. acknowledge that it is true,

  327. but that you would come

  328. wholly under the influence

  329. of who He is

  330. and what He has said.

  331. Which leads us to

  332. a question of application,

  333. which is very simple.

  334. Are you walking

  335. in God's truth?

  336. Not do you recognize

  337. what is true,

  338. but are you walking

  339. in God's truth?

  340. Do you even care to?

  341. Is the longing of your heart

  342. ultimately at the end of the day

  343. to please the Lord?

  344. Even if you've done

  345. a miserable job at doing it,

  346. is it actually

  347. what you want to do?

  348. Is it there?

  349. That's the difference

  350. between being a Christian

  351. and being just a Christian.

  352. Let's look at the means.

  353. So David recognizes

  354. that a couple of other things

  355. have to happen

  356. in order to walk

  357. in God's truth.

  358. And really two things

  359. is what he gives here.

  360. In order to walk

  361. in God's truth,

  362. he knows that he must know

  363. God's ways

  364. and that he must fear

  365. God's name.

  366. It's really quite simple,

  367. isn't it?

  368. This isn't rocket science here.

  369. You cannot come wholly

  370. under the influence

  371. of God's truth

  372. without first knowing

  373. what it is

  374. and actually having

  375. a singular desire

  376. to do it.

  377. That's essentially

  378. what he's getting at here.

  379. And there's two things,

  380. there's two ways

  381. that I want to address this.

  382. David essentially says

  383. that knowing God's ways

  384. involves the instruction

  385. of the mind.

  386. So that's the first step.

  387. Fearing God's name

  388. involves the affections

  389. of the heart.

  390. Both are absolutely necessary.

  391. Both are divinely given.

  392. So let's look at it

  393. a little closer.

  394. First, I want you to see

  395. the instruction of the mind.

  396. Verse 11,

  397. David prays,

  398. teach me your way,

  399. O Lord.

  400. Teach me your way,

  401. O Lord.

  402. Now again,

  403. this isn't rocket science here.

  404. I don't mean to insult

  405. your intelligence,

  406. but let's just think

  407. about this word teach

  408. for a moment.

  409. The Hebrew word behind it,

  410. it simply means

  411. to point out

  412. or to mark the way.

  413. Like lighting a path.

  414. So poetically,

  415. David is using this word

  416. on purpose.

  417. He's saying that

  418. to walk in God's path

  419. required that God

  420. would clearly mark

  421. the way.

  422. So he asked for God

  423. to teach him,

  424. to point out the way

  425. of truth,

  426. to point out the way

  427. of righteousness

  428. and make it clear.

  429. Jesus did this.

  430. Jesus once said

  431. that there are

  432. two possible paths

  433. that you can walk

  434. in life.

  435. one is well-traveled.

  436. Everybody seems

  437. to go there.

  438. You may be on that way

  439. simply because

  440. it feels comfortable.

  441. Everybody else seems

  442. to be walking

  443. on that way.

  444. There's safety in it,

  445. right?

  446. Sometimes we get

  447. in the midst of a crowd.

  448. We don't really know

  449. where we're going.

  450. We just know that

  451. everybody else is going there

  452. so it must be

  453. the right place.

  454. Jesus is saying

  455. there's a path

  456. that most people

  457. find themselves on.

  458. They're not really

  459. paying attention

  460. to the signs

  461. on the road.

  462. They're just kind of

  463. going along with it.

  464. It's easy.

  465. There's a lot of people there

  466. but he says

  467. at the end of this path

  468. is destruction.

  469. We read it

  470. in Matthew chapter 7.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  471. Enter by the narrow gate

  472. Jesus says

  473. for the gate is wide

  474. the way is easy

  475. that leads to destruction

  476. and those who enter

  477. by it are many.

  478. But then he says

  479. the only other possible

  480. path for your life

  481. is this other path.

  482. It's a bit obscure.

  483. Not very many people

  484. find it he says.

  485. It's clearly marked

  486. but it's hard.

  487. It's the path

  488. not of least resistance

  489. it's the path

  490. of most resistance

  491. and it's going to be

  492. very difficult for you

  493. but at the end

  494. of the path is life.

  495. He goes on to say

  496. for the gate is narrow

  497. the way is hard

  498. that leads to life

  499. and those who find it

  500. are few.

  501. It is God's path

  502. that leads to life.

  503. It is his way

  504. that leads to eternal life.

  505. But you'll never find it

  506. by accident.

  507. Contrary to popular notions

  508. that we're all

  509. all these religions

  510. world religions

  511. are ultimately

  512. kind of doing the same thing.

  513. They're working their way

  514. to the same place

  515. and it doesn't really make

  516. a difference

  517. which route you take

  518. you're probably

  519. going to get there

  520. as long as you're not

  521. so bad as

  522. you know

  523. the infamous people

  524. of history

  525. like Hitler

  526. or so forth

  527. you're probably

  528. going to be alright.

  529. It doesn't really matter

  530. which route you take.

  531. That's not what God says.

  532. He says no

  533. this is actually

  534. not a well-traveled path.

  535. His way is the only way

  536. that actually leads to life.

  537. And his way is marked

  538. by his spirit

  539. through his word.

  540. That's the key.

  541. If you're looking for the signs

  542. on the side of the road

  543. to tell you where you're going

  544. the only way to life

  545. is to look to the word.

  546. Is to look to the word.

  547. The Bible.

  548. Our instruction is the Bible.

  549. Our instructor

  550. is God himself.

  551. That's why in Psalm 119

  552. the psalmist says

  553. your word is a lamp

  554. to my feet.

  555. It's a light to my path.

  556. It shows the way.

  557. As long as I stay

  558. in the light of God's word

  559. I'll stay on the way

  560. to life.

  561. 1 Corinthians chapter 2

    1 Corinthians 2 chapter mention

  562. Paul dabbles

  563. with this dynamic

  564. of the Holy Spirit

  565. being the one

  566. who teaches us.

  567. He says now

  568. we have received

  569. not the spirit of the world

  570. but the spirit

  571. who is from God

  572. that we might understand

  573. the things

  574. freely given us

  575. by God.

  576. That's the scriptures.

  577. What are the things given?

  578. The scriptures.

  579. Who is it that helps us

  580. understand the things

  581. freely given?

  582. Paul says

  583. it's the spirit of God

  584. who does that.

  585. And we impart this

  586. in words

  587. not taught by human wisdom.

  588. It's not our idea

  589. but it's actually

  590. taught by the spirit

  591. interpreting spiritual truths

  592. to those who are spiritual.

  593. In other words

  594. you cannot know

  595. the way of God

  596. without God's word.

  597. And you cannot know

  598. God's word

  599. apart from God's spirit.

  600. To walk in God's truth

  601. requires that we be instructed

  602. by the scriptures.

  603. And we must pray

  604. that the spirit

  605. will illuminate his word

  606. in our hearts

  607. and in our minds.

  608. Otherwise

  609. we become like those

  610. who simply acknowledge

  611. that this is truth

  612. without actually walking

  613. in that truth.

  614. Teach me your way

  615. oh Lord.

  616. Not let me take my Bible

  617. and figure it out.

  618. No.

  619. You teach me Lord.

  620. I have my Bible.

  621. I'm going to read it.

  622. I need you

  623. to help me.

  624. I need you

  625. to work in me

  626. and to illuminate

  627. my heart and mind

  628. and to enlighten

  629. my eyes.

  630. So there is the instruction

  631. of the mind here.

  632. The second means

  633. has to do with

  634. the affections of the heart.

  635. The affections of the heart.

  636. Look again at verse 11

  637. the third phrase here.

  638. Unite my heart

  639. to fear your name.

  640. So we must know

  641. God's ways.

  642. We must fear

  643. God's name.

  644. But what does that mean?

  645. It's one of the most

  646. confusing statements

  647. in the Bible to me.

  648. What does it actually mean

  649. to fear God?

  650. Well it doesn't mean

  651. to be afraid of Him

  652. at least in the

  653. traditional sense.

  654. And I want to show you

  655. a passage that helps us

  656. to understand that.

  657. In Exodus chapter 20

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  658. I'm not sure if this one's

  659. on the screen.

  660. Is this on the screen?

  661. So you can just lift

  662. your eyes here.

  663. Exodus chapter 20

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  664. this is at the

  665. conclusion of God

  666. giving Israel

  667. the Ten Commandments.

  668. And I want you to see

  669. what happens.

  670. Now when all the people

  671. saw the thunder

  672. and the flashes of lightning

  673. and the sound of the trumpet

  674. and the mountain smoking

  675. wouldn't that be terrifying?

  676. That would be

  677. absolutely terrifying.

  678. And guess what they were?

  679. They were afraid.

  680. They were terrified.

  681. They trembled.

  682. So much so

  683. that they stood far off

  684. and they said to Moses

  685. you talk to us

  686. and we'll listen.

  687. Don't let God talk to us.

  688. If He talks to us again

  689. we're going to die.

  690. He's going to kill us.

  691. We'll hear from you.

  692. But watch what Moses says.

  693. He says to the people

  694. do not fear.

  695. That is

  696. don't be afraid of God.

  697. Instead he says

  698. for God has come

  699. to test you

  700. that the fear of Him

  701. may be before you

  702. that you may not sin.

  703. In other words

  704. what Moses is getting at here

  705. is that being afraid of God

  706. is actually the opposite

  707. of fearing God.

  708. Those who are not in Christ

  709. those who are still

  710. in their sin

  711. lost in their sin

  712. they have no choice

  713. but to be afraid of God.

  714. All that they have now

  715. is judgment and damnation

  716. that awaits them.

  717. But for those of us in Christ

  718. that's not the experience

  719. is it?

  720. We have no need

  721. to be afraid of God.

  722. We do have a need

  723. to fear Him.

  724. Those two things

  725. are on the opposite

  726. ends of the spectrum.

  727. So at least the first thing

  728. that we know

  729. is that it doesn't mean

  730. to be afraid of God.

  731. We see this again

  732. in Isaiah.

  733. Isaiah prophesies

  734. that Jesus would have

  735. the spirit of fear.

  736. But Jesus wasn't afraid

  737. of God the Father.

  738. Here's what He says.

  739. The spirit of the Lord

  740. shall rest on Him.

  741. The spirit of wisdom

  742. and understanding.

  743. The spirit of counsel

  744. and might.

  745. The spirit of knowledge

  746. and of the fear

  747. of the Lord.

  748. He'll be characterized

  749. by this.

  750. And His delight

  751. shall be in the fear

  752. of the Lord.

  753. But Jesus wasn't afraid

  754. of God.

  755. So what is this?

  756. What does it actually mean?

  757. Let me give you

  758. a few thoughts here.

  759. To fear God

  760. is to stand

  761. in awesome wonder

  762. of Him.

  763. It's to stand

  764. in awesome wonder

  765. of Him.

  766. Which requires

  767. that you know

  768. and believe

  769. what the Bible says

  770. about Him.

  771. Psalm 33.

  772. Let all the earth

  773. fear the Lord.

  774. Let all the inhabitants

  775. of the world

  776. stand in awe

  777. of Him.

  778. To fear the Lord

  779. is to be full

  780. of adoration

  781. for God.

  782. Full of praise

  783. and worship

  784. for God.

  785. Psalm 22.

  786. You who fear the Lord

  787. praise Him.

  788. The psalmist says.

  789. Fearing God

  790. means loving

  791. what He loves

  792. and hating

  793. what He hates.

  794. Proverbs chapter 8.

    Proverbs 8 chapter mention

  795. The fear of the Lord

  796. is hatred

  797. of evil.

  798. It's hatred

  799. of evil.

  800. Well why do you hate

  801. evil

  802. if you

  803. fear the Lord?

  804. Because the Lord

  805. hates evil.

  806. We hate what He hates.

  807. Deuteronomy chapter 10.

    Deuteronomy 10 chapter mention

  808. You shall fear

  809. the Lord your God.

  810. You shall serve Him

  811. and hold fast to Him

  812. and by His name

  813. you shall swear.

  814. You love what He loves.

  815. You do what He

  816. says.

  817. Solomon says

  818. without the fear

  819. of the Lord

  820. you cannot possess

  821. the wisdom

  822. and understanding

  823. that it takes

  824. to walk in His ways.

  825. Proverbs 9.

  826. The fear of the Lord

  827. is the beginning

  828. of wisdom.

  829. The knowledge

  830. of the Holy One

  831. is insight.

  832. Psalm 25.

  833. Who is the man

  834. who fears the Lord?

  835. Him will He instruct

  836. in the way

  837. that He should choose.

  838. It's just a

  839. surface level approach

  840. of what it actually means

  841. to fear the Lord

  842. is to have a life

  843. that's in awe of God.

  844. You love what He loves.

  845. You hate what He hates.

  846. To please Him.

  847. Walk in His ways.

  848. Now David recognizes

  849. that there is something

  850. that stands in the way

  851. of fearing God.

  852. Look at it in the verse.

  853. Unite my heart

  854. He says.

  855. Unite my heart

  856. to fear His name.

  857. What is it that's standing

  858. in the way

  859. of fearing God?

  860. It's a divided heart.

  861. We might say

  862. it's competing

  863. affections.

  864. so that David says

  865. unite my heart

  866. God

  867. help me to

  868. want your glory

  869. more than I want

  870. anything else.

  871. Help me to want

  872. your glory

  873. more than I want

  874. the sin.

  875. Help me to want

  876. your glory

  877. more than I want

  878. the satisfaction

  879. of sex and lust.

  880. Help me want

  881. your glory

  882. more than I want

  883. the satisfaction

  884. of getting won up

  885. on this person

  886. that I really hate.

  887. Help me want

  888. your glory

  889. more than anything

  890. else in my life.

  891. Unite my heart.

  892. give it a singular focus spurgeon paraphrased it this way having taught me one way give me one

  893. heart to walk therein for too often i feel a heart and a heart two natures contending two principles

  894. struggling for sovereignty that's really the key isn't it what is the real struggle that we have

  895. as believers it is this inner struggle with who will we allow to have sovereignty in our lives

  896. will we allow the word of god to guide us and the spirit of god to inform us or will we give in to

  897. the lust and the temptations of the flesh that wage war against it every believer can relate to david's

  898. and spurgeon's experiences of fighting through competing affections of the heart we know what

  899. this is like we desire to live a morally upright life but there's a competing desire on the other end

  900. to fulfill the lust of the flesh and it's a struggle and it's a fight and our prayer must be

  901. unite my heart lord so that you win so that i may fear your name we want to be faithful to the worship

  902. gathering on the lord's day that wages war against this other desire for rest and family time instead

  903. what must be our prayer unite my heart lord don't even let me make my family an idol that comes before you

  904. we want to stand firm on the bible and share the gospel with others we also have this other competing

  905. affection that desires to be accepted by the culture that hates god's law and anyone who's willing to

  906. follow it they're competing affections they wage war in our hearts and to walk in god's truth requires

  907. that we fear god's name and to fear god's name means that our affection for his glory must reign over every

  908. other affection of the heart and here's the good news about that is that by god's grace a singular heart

  909. for god is what's promised in the gospel of jesus it's promised in the new covenant jeremiah 32 i will give

  910. them one heart and one way that they may fear me forever for their own good and the good of their

  911. children after them i will make with them an everlasting covenant that i will not turn away from doing good

  912. to them i will put the fear of me in their hearts that they may not turn from me

  913. paul talked about this struggle at the end of romans 7 recognizing this war raging within him and he says

  914. at the end of it oh wretched man that i am who will deliver me from this body of death he says and then

  915. he provides the answer thanks be to god through jesus christ our lord that's how we fear god's name

  916. it comes through christ it comes through his gospel and his gospel alone

  917. and if there is anyone here who maybe you're new to christianity or you're a little confused about

  918. some of the things that i've been saying the clearest demonstration of what david was getting

  919. at in this prayer is found perfectly in the person of jesus

  920. another old preacher christopher wordsworth said this verse verse 11 of psalm 86 is the via veritas

  921. vita of the gospel in john 14 in other words christ is our way teach me your way oh lord christ is our way

  922. that i may walk in your truth christ is our truth

  923. unite my heart to fear your name christ is our life

  924. to see the way you look to jesus

  925. to know the truth you listen to jesus to have eternal life you follow jesus he will teach you

  926. he will transform the affections of your heart so that you might walk in god's truth not because you're

  927. capable but because he is capable not because you have to do it to earn god's favor but because he has

  928. done it and he has granted god's favor on your behalf

  929. the verse is filled with all kinds of things that we're responsible for

  930. there's no really other way to look at it we must know god's ways which means that we must study god's

  931. word we must walk in his truth god's not going to walk it for us we must do that we must fear his name

  932. and yet david still makes this an issue of prayer it's as if david knows that in order to do this

  933. he needs divine aid he says teach me

  934. he says unite my heart

  935. because only god if you do those things in me will i be able to truly walk in your ways

  936. the truth is none of us can actually do any of this on our own

  937. sin is so permeated our hearts that we desperately need god's intervention to actually fulfill the

  938. purpose for which he has created us we need the word and the spirit to teach us we need the grace of

  939. god to transform those affections we need the enabling power of god to walk in his truth

  940. that's why this prayer is worth repeating over and over and over day by day circumstance by circumstance

  941. teach me your way oh lord unite my heart to fear your name so that i may walk in your truth

  942. it's truly a prayer to live by isn't it perhaps a suitable life verse if you're so inclined
