  1. As I've noted each week, the literary structure of the seven sermons in these two chapters creates what we call a chiasm.

  2. Chiasm, meaning that the content of each sermon, it narrows in its scope and focus and then broadens back out again.

  3. In fact, we may, do I have this, Becky, on the screen? Does it look like it has an X and maybe the different names of the churches?

  4. There you go, there, now you can see it again.

  5. You can see kind of the, so chiasm, as we talked about in that first message, chiasm comes from the Greek letter chi, which looks like an X.

  6. And so it narrows in its scope of content and then it broadens back out again.

  7. That's what's happening with these seven sermons and the way that they are organized for us.

  8. And that's helpful to our understanding.

  9. As we thought about Ephesus just a couple of weeks ago, the parallel to Ephesus would be Laodicea, which has very similar issues.

  10. Last week we considered Smyrna, which has a parallel of the church in Philadelphia, which are the only two churches that do not have complaints from Jesus or corrections.

  11. They're the only two healthy churches, we would assume, among the seven.

  12. And now we get this morning to Pergamum, which initiates a section in the center of this chiasm that groups three churches together.

  13. And these three churches, what we find as we read through them, are all at various stages of decline.

  14. And their order seems to present a progression that moves from bad to worse to worst.

  15. You can consider, you can read through the whole thing later this afternoon if you want, but let me just summarize it for you.

  16. Pergamum has adopted a subtle or infant form of compromise.

  17. It did not fully embrace error.

  18. It did not fully embrace false teaching or immorality, but it was tolerating members in the church that did.

  19. And what we find as we move through these three churches, the common sin is this sin of compromise.

  20. So what we find in Pergamum is kind of this subtle infant compromise.

  21. Then as we move to Thyatira, we find that they were much more blatant and open in their compromise.

  22. So that the church as a whole generally was embracing false teaching and ungodliness.

  23. Then we move to the third church in the grouping, that's Sardis.

  24. And the condition of Sardis' compromise is such that Jesus just simply says that they are dead.

  25. They're dead.

  26. With the exception of just a few faithful members in the church who are remaining faithful to the Lord and to the gospel,

  27. the church ultimately was full of unbelievers.

  28. And we see this progression.

  29. We're going to focus in on this thought and this progression over the next three weeks.

  30. The commonality is compromised, but there's different levels of compromise in each church.

  31. And what we find is that if in Pergamum, if we are a Pergamene type church and we don't repent of that and we don't move away from that subtle compromise,

  32. ultimately we become a Thyatira church, which eventually is going to lead to a Sardis church, a dead church, an unbelieving church.

  33. And so a Pergamene spirit will set a church very quickly on the trajectory of spiritual death.

  34. And that's the warning that we heed as we come here.

  35. Now, the sermon to Pergamum has an overall tone of judgment.

  36. Jesus is the righteous judge here, and he is warning them that compromising truth and godliness

  37. under pressure from the world or as a result of our sinful flesh will incur his righteous judgment.

  38. So not only are we to remain faithful in belief in behavior,

  39. but we must lovingly correct and discipline those who are not.

  40. And so there's a very specific instruction that we begin to see unfold in this sermon to this church.

  41. And as with every church, Jesus provides a promise so that the overall tone may be judgment, but it's not all judgment.

  42. He provides in the conclusion a really wonderful promise here that we will get to,

  43. that the benefits of being faithful to Christ far exceed anything that this world has to offer.

  44. So then we are to be motivated then, not only by the reality of Christ's judgment as the righteous judge,

  45. that great eschatological judge and king who will return to judge the world,

  46. but we are to be motivated by the glorious promise that he gives to all who conquer,

  47. to all who conquer in his name.

  48. And just as a side, this should be the nature of our tone in evangelism.

  49. Julie and I were, I don't know if it was, I don't know where she found it,

  50. but she was watching this video of someone the other day that essentially,

  51. I know what they were trying to say, but essentially they were condemning those who would come to Christ

  52. merely out of a fear of going to hell.

  53. Hell.

  54. And I hate that.

  55. And I hate it for this reason.

  56. Because Jesus talks about hell so much.

  57. He talks about judgment so much.

  58. And the reason is because the judgment that is to come for unbelievers

  59. is to motivate their repentance and their turning to Christ.

  60. Now in our evangelism, if all we ever talk about is hell,

  61. and we never talk about the goodness of God and the graciousness of Jesus

  62. and the prize and the treasure that Jesus is, there's a problem in that.

  63. But if we're always only emphasizing the treasure that is Jesus

  64. and we never warn of hell, there's a problem in that as well.

  65. There's a balance to it, isn't there?

  66. We are motivated not only by the judgment of Christ,

  67. we are motivated by the promise of Christ.

  68. That's the full gospel.

  69. And as we come to this particular sermon to the church at Pergamum,

  70. we find this balance in the words of Jesus.

  71. He is the righteous judge who will come

  72. and he threatens judgment for all who do not follow him.

  73. But he is also a gracious savior

  74. who promises the hidden manna, eternal life and salvation

  75. for all who do conquer through him.

  76. And that's the balance of the sermon as we go.

  77. Let's consider first the church identity and Christ title.

  78. Look with me at verse 12.

  79. To the angel of the church in Pergamum write,

  80. the words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword.

  81. Many cities have a unique identity in the world.

  82. If I were to mention your first thoughts

  83. that maybe come to mind when I say Las Vegas, Nevada,

  84. probably the first thing that comes to your mind

  85. is not its proximity to the Grand Canyon or the Hoover Dam.

  86. That might be in the mix,

  87. but it's probably not your first thought.

  88. Well, it comes to your mind.

  89. Well, it's known as Sin City.

  90. It's the place where many people go

  91. to live out some sort of debauchery

  92. that they hope doesn't follow them home.

  93. And that's what we think about.

  94. It's known for being an adult playground, so to speak.

  95. Paris is the city of love.

  96. Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of the world.

  97. Salt Lake City would be the heart of Mormonism.

  98. Many big cities like this, they have a personality.

  99. They have an identity that people generally know them by.

  100. Pergamum had such an identity.

  101. In the Roman province of Asia, at this time in its history,

  102. Pergamum was known for its pluralistic religion.

  103. It was the religious capital of the region.

  104. And if you lived there, in Asia that is, during the first century,

  105. you would have most likely thought of Pergamum as a melting pot of religion.

  106. That was what its identity was.

  107. It contained a plethora of religious landmarks.

  108. Civil life in the city was permeated by pagan ritualism.

  109. And what I mean by that is that it would be impossible

  110. to go about the routine task of life in Pergamum

  111. without witnessing or engaging with pagan ritualism,

  112. pagan forms of worship.

  113. It really was constraining in their culture.

  114. It went so deeply in their culture that it touched everything that they did.

  115. And so we're going to come back to that in just a moment.

  116. So let's just move on to the Christ title now.

  117. Jesus refers to himself here as the one who has the sharp two-edged sword.

  118. The sharp two-edged sword.

  119. Now remember, this is not John's estimation of who Jesus is.

  120. This is Jesus' self-revelation.

  121. He tells John, write this to the pastor of the church in Pergamum.

  122. Here's who I am to this church.

  123. Here's how they should think of me at this point.

  124. I am the one with the sharp two-edged sword.

  125. The sword in that culture symbolized authority, power,

  126. especially as it relates to punishment.

  127. And the New Testament uses this imagery as a result.

  128. Romans chapter 13, you'll remember Paul writing about

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  129. the Christian relationship to government.

  130. He says, would you have no fear of the one who is in authority?

  131. Then do what's good, and you will receive his approval.

  132. For he's God's servant for your good.

  133. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain.

  134. So when this type of language was used,

  135. it was automatically going to be associated with power,

  136. authority, and pending punishment from that authority.

  137. And that the sword is sharp and two-edged means that it is effective,

  138. fully capable of inflicting swift and total punishment

  139. by whoever it is that wields it.

  140. And Jesus says, the way that I want Pergamum to think of me

  141. is as the one who wields the sharp two-edged sword.

  142. And early readers would have immediately recognized this

  143. as a contrast to Rome.

  144. And it's really what sets the tone for the rest of the sermon.

  145. Rome carried a tremendous sort of power.

  146. But in Jesus' words here, it was nothing compared to the authority of Christ.

  147. Rome threatened a harsh judgment in this life,

  148. but Jesus is that eschatological judge

  149. before whom every man and woman and boy and girl

  150. will have to stand in judgment.

  151. And the fact that Jesus uses this title here

  152. and in the consequence formula of verse 16

  153. shows how serious of a matter

  154. this issue of subtle compromise truly is.

  155. This is the sin in the church.

  156. And he says, now I want you to think of me

  157. as the one with the sword.

  158. And the question we are forced to ask at this point is,

  159. which sword do we respect most?

  160. The sword of Rome or the sword of Christ?

  161. Either our fear of persecution will weaken our faith

  162. and diminish our fear of God,

  163. or our fear of God will strengthen our faith

  164. and cause us to stand boldly in the face of hardship

  165. for the name of Christ.

  166. That's what's at play here.

  167. This was a very serious issue.

  168. This was confronting the church in Pergamum

  169. every single day of their lives.

  170. Will we fear most the sword of Rome

  171. or the sword of God, the sword of Christ?

  172. Of course, Jesus tells us in Matthew 10,

  173. do not fear those who kill the body,

  174. but cannot kill the soul.

  175. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul

  176. and body in hell.

  177. So Jesus very clearly tells us what it is,

  178. is the right decision in those moments.

  179. And that's what he's gonna begin to work through here

  180. in this sermon to Pergamum.

  181. Well, that's the identity in Christ's title.

  182. Let's consider now the commendation from Christ

  183. in verse 13.

  184. The commendation.

  185. Read it with me.

  186. I know where you dwell, where Satan's throne is.

  187. Yet you hold fast my name,

  188. and you did not deny my faith,

  189. even in the days of Antipas,

  190. my faithful witness,

  191. who was killed among you,

  192. where Satan dwells.

  193. I know where you dwell, Jesus says.

  194. I know, I know.

  195. And this is in the context of commendation.

  196. Have you ever suffered through a season of life

  197. and felt the comfort of someone

  198. who just simply acknowledged your struggle?

  199. There was nothing really that they could offer you.

  200. They couldn't really change your circumstance.

  201. But just in the way that they approached you

  202. or talked with you or prayed with you

  203. or whatever it may have been,

  204. you just kind of felt seen

  205. and a little bit understood.

  206. And that was enough to kind of give you

  207. a comforting pick-me-up

  208. to continue on in your perseverance.

  209. I hope you've experienced that before.

  210. And can you imagine if that's the experience we have

  211. when there is a human comfort in our lives

  212. that God sends?

  213. What kind of comfort must this be

  214. to the church in Pergamon

  215. when they hear from their Lord and Savior?

  216. When he just says and he makes this statement,

  217. I know, I know.

  218. I've talked with Terry about this a number of times

  219. in different circumstances that we face in life,

  220. how comforting it is just sometimes to know

  221. that Jesus knows.

  222. He is aware of what we're facing.

  223. He's aware of our struggle.

  224. There's a sense of comfort that comes

  225. just from those words.

  226. And surely the church in Pergamon

  227. felt that comfort from the Lord.

  228. He was well aware of how difficult it was

  229. to be a Christian in that city.

  230. And he commended them on being faithful to the gospel,

  231. even when facing extreme persecution.

  232. The church had, as a whole,

  233. held fast to the name of Jesus, he says,

  234. and they refused to abandon the faith.

  235. They are confronted day by day

  236. with that question of the sword.

  237. Will we follow Rome or will we follow Christ

  238. when those two things conflict together?

  239. And over and over, this church in Pergamon

  240. had said, no, we will follow Christ.

  241. We will not abandon the name of Christ.

  242. We will be faithful.

  243. And Jesus commends them.

  244. Let's consider for just a moment

  245. the magnitude of this perseverance in Pergamon.

  246. The fact that Pergamon is the religious capital

  247. or was the religious capital of Asia

  248. is what merits this description

  249. that it is the place where Satan's throne is.

  250. Do you see it there in verse 13?

  251. Again, I know where you dwell,

  252. where Satan's throne is.

  253. I mentioned there were a number

  254. of religious landmarks in the city.

  255. It was the home to the Asclepius Healing Center,

  256. named after the Greek god of healing, Asclepius.

  257. Mythology portrayed this god as a snake.

  258. You will be familiar with his symbol

  259. because it's still the symbol

  260. used in the medical world today.

  261. It's a staff with a serpent intertwined around it.

  262. The heart of this type of mythological religion

  263. was in Pergamon.

  264. There was a healing center there.

  265. People would travel from all over

  266. to come and pray to this god.

  267. They would go into this temple scenario

  268. where snakes were kept

  269. and they would lay

  270. and snakes would come along them

  271. and they would hope that

  272. that some type of healing

  273. would be transferred to them

  274. through their worship to this god

  275. as he passed on this healing property

  276. through the elements connected to this temple.

  277. Now, I don't care how sick I am.

  278. I'm never gonna lay down

  279. and let snakes crawl all over me.

  280. I'd just rather die, I think.

  281. But this is in Pergamon.

  282. This place is right in the...

  283. But it's not the only thing that's in Pergamon.

  284. Also in Pergamon is an enormous altar to Zeus,

  285. that great Greek god of gods.

  286. It was massive.

  287. It was known as the Zeus savior.

  288. It was a place of pagan religion and worship

  289. and everything that comes along with that

  290. right there in the heart of Pergamon.

  291. But perhaps the most important religious site

  292. at the time was this temple

  293. to the imperial cult of Rome,

  294. the place where Romans would go

  295. to actually worship their Caesars.

  296. Now, we talked about last week in Smyrna,

  297. Smyrna's loyalty to Rome

  298. had actually granted it the possibility

  299. of a temple of its own to the imperial cult,

  300. but it was the second temple in the area.

  301. The primary one was in Pergamon.

  302. Why?

  303. Because this is the religious capital.

  304. If you were gonna set up a temple somewhere

  305. for your religion in that day and age,

  306. it would have been Pergamon.

  307. So Pergamon, the city,

  308. is somewhat of a microcosm

  309. of the pluralistic ideas of Roman religion.

  310. But there is a tremendous irony in all of this

  311. because what Jesus goes on to say

  312. is that in the midst of this pluralism,

  313. this tolerance for multiple religions,

  314. there is this intolerance for Christianity.

  315. That's the irony, isn't it?

  316. Romans didn't care who you worshiped.

  317. They didn't care if you worship Jesus.

  318. Their problem was the exclusivity claims of Christianity.

  319. They didn't mind adding more and more gods

  320. to their set of religions.

  321. What they didn't tolerate

  322. was to take away any gods from their set of religions.

  323. And then Jesus and Christianity comes on the scene

  324. and Christians begin to preach the gospel

  325. that says there is only one God

  326. and there is only one Lord

  327. and it's not Caesar.

  328. It's Jesus.

  329. And unless you repent and believe in him,

  330. you're gonna be judged by him

  331. and you're gonna spend eternity in hell.

  332. That was the message.

  333. That was the intolerance.

  334. So this ultimately religious tolerant society

  335. is intolerant of intolerance.

  336. Remember also that Roman religion

  337. was not based in doctrine,

  338. but ritual.

  339. That's really what they cared about.

  340. It wasn't so much what you believed.

  341. They didn't care so much about your religious position.

  342. They cared about your religious participation.

  343. Participation.

  344. That's what they really, really mattered to them

  345. because to them, the culture

  346. and the way that the city

  347. and the culture would worship

  348. had something to do with

  349. how the God would treat the city as a whole.

  350. Participation in their forms of worship

  351. was important culturally for them.

  352. And as I said earlier,

  353. daily life in a place like Pergamum

  354. was saturated with pagan practices.

  355. A faithful Christian would stick out

  356. like a sore thumb in that city.

  357. It would not take very long

  358. for you to draw attention.

  359. Maybe not even necessarily

  360. because of what you're doing

  361. or what you're saying,

  362. but because of what you're not doing

  363. and what you're not saying.

  364. And the context led to this devastating moment

  365. in the church's history.

  366. Jesus talks about Antipas,

  367. the faithful witness.

  368. We don't know much about him.

  369. Tradition says that he was

  370. a faithful Christian leader in Pergamum

  371. who suffered an excruciatingly torturous death

  372. because of his faith.

  373. Like extremely torturous.

  374. You can look it up on your own later.

  375. And as we read in verse 13,

  376. we get this idea

  377. that Antipas' death

  378. was not only shocking,

  379. but it was perhaps sudden.

  380. Maybe this was the first real martyrdom

  381. that this church had experienced.

  382. That he was killed,

  383. as Jesus says,

  384. among them where Satan dwells

  385. indicates that perhaps

  386. some of the people in the church

  387. were present

  388. at one of the specific

  389. religious landmarks in the city.

  390. And that's where Antipas

  391. suddenly was taken

  392. and executed before them.

  393. Now, can you imagine

  394. having to be a witness

  395. to the torture and execution

  396. of a beloved brother

  397. or sister in Christ,

  398. knowing

  399. that all eyes are now set on you.

  400. And that if you refuse

  401. to do what they want,

  402. as far as their pagan practices

  403. are concerned,

  404. you're the one that's going to have

  405. to face that type of death next.

  406. That's what Pergamum was up against.

  407. That's what they're dealing with.

  408. And Jesus commends them.

  409. He says,

  410. but you've held fast

  411. to the name of Jesus.

  412. You have not abandoned my faith.

  413. He says,

  414. and he commends them greatly on this.

  415. Of course,

  416. the religious irony of Pergamum

  417. is just as prevalent today.

  418. We live in a deeply pluralistic,

  419. albeit secular,

  420. culture

  421. that is tolerant

  422. of every possible belief

  423. and behavior

  424. except the one

  425. that isn't tolerant.

  426. And if you're going to live

  427. as a faithful Christian

  428. in this world

  429. and if you're going to live

  430. as a faithful Christian

  431. in this city,

  432. you're going to have to remain

  433. steadfast in the faith

  434. and there's no way

  435. you're going to be able

  436. to hide that.

  437. You won't be able to hide it.

  438. At some point,

  439. you'll have to face

  440. the same question

  441. that the Pergamum people faced.

  442. will we care more

  443. about the sword of Christ

  444. or the sword of Rome?

  445. Let's consider the complaint here.

  446. Verse 14,

  447. I have a few things against you,

  448. Jesus says.

  449. You have some there

  450. who hold the teaching of Balaam,

  451. who taught Balak

  452. to put a stumbling block

  453. before the sons of Israel

  454. so that they may eat food,

  455. sacrifice to idols,

  456. and practice sexual immorality.

  457. So also,

  458. you have some

  459. who hold the teaching

  460. of the Nicolaitans.

  461. So despite the commendation,

  462. a serious problem

  463. is developing in Pergamum here.

  464. Though they had been faithful before,

  465. they were beginning

  466. to cultivate a subtle,

  467. doctrinal,

  468. and moral compromise.

  469. Now the church as a whole

  470. is not embracing

  471. idolatry and immorality.

  472. That's not at all

  473. the indication that we get here.

  474. It's not that they're all

  475. participating in these things,

  476. but they weren't shutting

  477. the door to it either.

  478. That was the problem.

  479. They'd let their guard down,

  480. and they'd let their guard down

  481. by allowing some people

  482. in the church

  483. to adopt these sinful practices

  484. and beliefs

  485. without consequence.

  486. So the issue,

  487. the compromise there,

  488. is not that the whole church

  489. is erring,

  490. it's that they are tolerating error

  491. without confronting it

  492. in the church itself.

  493. Now we first hear

  494. about the Nicolaitans

  495. in Jesus' sermon

  496. to the church in Ephesus.

  497. There's not a lot

  498. that we know about this group either,

  499. but essentially,

  500. their teaching was

  501. seducing Christians

  502. to participate in idolatry

  503. and in sexual immorality

  504. while also trying to maintain

  505. a Christian identity.

  506. Okay?

  507. Now you can put two and two together

  508. as to how we face this

  509. even still today.

  510. Here there's teaching

  511. that's creeping its way

  512. into the church,

  513. into the Christian circles,

  514. and it's saying

  515. you can still be a Christian

  516. and do this

  517. and think this

  518. and tolerate this.

  519. That's the teaching

  520. of the Nicolaitans essentially.

  521. And there were some people

  522. in Pergamum

  523. who are beginning

  524. to adopt this teaching.

  525. They're beginning

  526. to hold to it.

  527. They're participating

  528. in idolatry

  529. and in sexual immorality

  530. and they think it's fine.

  531. And in the midst

  532. of all of that,

  533. they're trying to still

  534. maintain a Christian identity.

  535. And Jesus comes in

  536. and he confronts this

  537. and he says,

  538. no, this isn't actually possible.

  539. This is a sin.

  540. This is a problem.

  541. And this Old Testament illustration

  542. that Jesus uses

  543. for the Nicolaitans

  544. is helpful to us.

  545. You can read all about Balaam

  546. and Balak

  547. in the book of Numbers

  548. this afternoon.

  549. And I would encourage you

  550. actually to do it.

  551. It's a fascinating story.

  552. Balaam was known

  553. for being a pagan prophet.

  554. People believe

  555. that he had this ability

  556. to speak to them

  557. on behalf of the gods.

  558. But he was a mercenary prophet.

  559. He would speak

  560. on behalf of whatever God's people

  561. were paying him

  562. at the precise moment.

  563. You will recognize Balaam

  564. probably not so much

  565. for anything

  566. that a god said through him,

  567. but for what the god,

  568. the one true god,

  569. said through his donkey.

  570. Remember Balaam's donkey.

  571. And what's the point of that?

  572. Well, the point of it,

  573. what it tells us,

  574. is that God can speak

  575. through anybody.

  576. He doesn't only speak

  577. through believers.

  578. He speaks through unbelievers.

  579. He speaks through animals,

  580. apparently.

  581. He can speak through anything

  582. that he wants to speak.

  583. And then this story

  584. begins to unfold

  585. with Balaam and Balak,

  586. who was the king of Moab.

  587. Now, he's the king of Moab

  588. during the wilderness

  589. wandering years of Israel.

  590. And Balak hired Balaam

  591. specifically to pronounce a curse

  592. on the nation of Israel.

  593. He was terrified of them,

  594. as everybody was.

  595. And he promises Balaam

  596. an exorbitant amount of money

  597. and pleasure

  598. if he would pronounce this curse.

  599. And as the story unfolds,

  600. it just doesn't work.

  601. Every time Balaam

  602. tries to pronounce a curse,

  603. God changes it to a blessing.

  604. And so Balak and Balaam

  605. get frustrated.

  606. They go to multiple places

  607. and it doesn't work.

  608. And so that's the end

  609. of the story there

  610. until Balaam comes up

  611. with a different solution.

  612. And he tells Balak,

  613. here's what you need to do.

  614. You need to get

  615. the most beautiful women

  616. in Moab

  617. and you need to put them out front

  618. and you need to send them

  619. into the camp of Israel

  620. to seduce the young men

  621. of Israel.

  622. And if they'll seduce

  623. the young men,

  624. they'll end up marrying

  625. these women

  626. and you will be able

  627. to assimilate Israel

  628. into your nation

  629. and you will be king

  630. over both.

  631. You see, it's not so much

  632. a blatant form of compromise

  633. as it is a subtle one

  634. in Balaam's plan here.

  635. And it worked.

  636. They put the most beautiful

  637. Moabite women out there.

  638. Many young men go,

  639. according to the scripture,

  640. using language of the scripture,

  641. go whoring after them

  642. and after their idols.

  643. They begin to participate

  644. in the sexual immorality

  645. that comes along

  646. with pagan worship of idols.

  647. And as a result,

  648. God judges the nation

  649. and 24,000 men in Israel

  650. are killed by a plague

  651. that God sends.

  652. It's a massive statement.

  653. It's the same statement

  654. that Jesus is making

  655. to Pergamum

  656. because the Nicolaitans

  657. are doing the same thing

  658. Balaam was doing.

  659. They were seducing

  660. with their teaching

  661. Christians

  662. to try to maintain

  663. a Christian identity

  664. while participating

  665. in sexual immorality

  666. and idolatry

  667. in cultural worship.

  668. And what Jesus is saying,

  669. and we'll get to this again

  670. in just a moment,

  671. but what Jesus is saying

  672. is I'm going to come

  673. and those who are doing this

  674. are going to be destroyed.

  675. Just like the 24,000

  676. in Israel were destroyed,

  677. so will these people

  678. be destroyed.

  679. Jesus highlighted

  680. two specific sins

  681. that came from this teaching.

  682. Eating food sacrificed

  683. to idols

  684. was a willing participation

  685. in celebrations

  686. and feasts

  687. and family parties

  688. that would take place

  689. in these temple locations.

  690. And these rituals,

  691. these worship rituals,

  692. even if it was just

  693. for a birthday party,

  694. there's plenty

  695. of historical documentation

  696. that these places would,

  697. these things would take place

  698. in the context

  699. of a religious building

  700. or in a religious worship,

  701. and what would inevitably unfold

  702. is all sorts of sexual sin.

  703. And some elements

  704. of the Nicolaitan teaching

  705. were justifying Christian

  706. participation in these things.

  707. Now, whether it was

  708. to avoid persecution

  709. like Antipas,

  710. or whether it was just

  711. to satisfy their own

  712. lustful desire,

  713. some of these Christians

  714. were beginning to capitulate

  715. to these things.

  716. And the problem

  717. for the church

  718. in Pergamum

  719. was that they were

  720. allowing it to happen.

  721. They were allowing it

  722. to happen.

  723. They agreed

  724. to disagree

  725. on things

  726. that we have no business

  727. agreeing to disagree on.

  728. They were compromising,

  729. and Jesus was prepared

  730. to judge the church

  731. for the compromise.

  732. Now, finding the modern parallel

  733. to this is not hard.

  734. Our culture worships

  735. at the altar

  736. of expressive individualism.

  737. That, essentially,

  738. I am my own God.

  739. I determine my own identity.

  740. I determine who I am,

  741. what I'll worship,

  742. what I'll do,

  743. and how I'll live.

  744. That is our cultural,

  745. secular form of worship.

  746. And it is always bound up

  747. in some type of sexual sin.

  748. And in our day,

  749. it's bound up

  750. in this sexual revolution

  751. that is embodied

  752. most notably

  753. in the LGBTQ plus movement.

  754. There's no denying that.

  755. And to live

  756. in the United States today,

  757. in the month of June,

  758. in Pride Month,

  759. in the midst of Pride Week,

  760. is really no different

  761. than living in Pergamum.

  762. They don't care

  763. if you worship Jesus.

  764. So long as your version

  765. of Christianity

  766. accommodates practices

  767. that the Bible condemns.

  768. They're fine with a church

  769. that's Christian.

  770. Just make sure you put

  771. that rainbow flag out front.

  772. It's really no different

  773. than what's happening

  774. in Pergamum.

  775. But here's the thing

  776. about this.

  777. This compromise

  778. is not just about

  779. homosexual ideas

  780. and activities.

  781. And we are being foolish

  782. and deceiving ourselves

  783. when we mercilessly

  784. make homosexuals

  785. public enemy number one.

  786. Because here's the problem

  787. of compromising

  788. the Christian church

  789. in the United States today.

  790. We have been compromising

  791. on sexual sin

  792. long before the LGBTQ plus

  793. movement became a thing.

  794. What we see now

  795. is the fruit

  796. of the church

  797. tolerating sex

  798. outside of marriage

  799. for years.

  800. Tolerating drunkenness.

  801. Tolerating errant views

  802. of divorce

  803. and remarriage.

  804. tolerating pornographic media.

  805. Not even in some type

  806. of pornographic subscription.

  807. But simply in thinking

  808. that it's okay

  809. to entertain ourselves

  810. night by night

  811. by watching explicit nudity

  812. and sex unfold

  813. on the TV

  814. in front of us.

  815. We have compromised

  816. in this

  817. far, far longer

  818. before any type

  819. of homosexual activity

  820. became prevalent

  821. in our churches

  822. or in our society.

  823. And that's certainly

  824. a part of it.

  825. And it's the major note

  826. of our day

  827. in the cultural movement

  828. that is before us.

  829. But it is not just about

  830. the major cultural notes.

  831. There are serious problems

  832. of compromise

  833. that are much different

  834. than the homosexual agenda

  835. in Christian churches today.

  836. And there are plenty

  837. of churches

  838. in our area

  839. and around

  840. and around our world

  841. who are not

  842. participating in things

  843. but they're beginning

  844. to tolerate it

  845. in the church.

  846. They're agreeing

  847. to disagree

  848. on things

  849. that we have

  850. no business

  851. agreeing to disagree on.

  852. We are blatantly

  853. compromising the truth

  854. that Jesus has made

  855. abundantly clear.

  856. That's what Pergamum

  857. is beginning to do.

  858. And Jesus says

  859. because of this toleration

  860. not because of

  861. what you're doing

  862. but because of

  863. your toleration

  864. you need to see me now

  865. as the one

  866. with the sharp

  867. two-edged sword

  868. that is going to come

  869. and is going to judge

  870. all of those

  871. who are against me.

  872. And when we begin

  873. to tolerate

  874. these ideas

  875. and practices

  876. in our church

  877. even if we aren't

  878. ourselves embracing them

  879. we forsake the truth

  880. we abandon

  881. the lordship of Jesus

  882. and we invite

  883. the judgment of God.

  884. It doesn't mean

  885. that we don't show

  886. kindness and love

  887. and even welcoming

  888. to our events

  889. and to our services

  890. to people

  891. who disagree with us.

  892. But there is a difference

  893. between doing that

  894. and pretending

  895. as if this is not

  896. an issue at all

  897. and welcoming

  898. into membership

  899. anybody who just

  900. simply says

  901. that they want

  902. to be a Christian

  903. despite whatever

  904. their life may say.

  905. That's what Jesus

  906. is confronting

  907. here in Pergamum.

  908. Now let's look

  909. at his correction

  910. and his consequence

  911. verse 16.

  912. What's the solution?

  913. Not culture war.

  914. That's not the solution.

  915. The solution

  916. therefore

  917. repent

  918. if not

  919. I will come

  920. to you soon

  921. and war against

  922. them with the sword

  923. of my mouth.

  924. Now remember

  925. at this point

  926. Jesus' complaint

  927. is that they are

  928. tolerating people

  929. in the congregation

  930. that are participating

  931. in idolatry

  932. and immorality.

  933. The repentance

  934. then that Jesus

  935. is calling the church

  936. to

  937. is to

  938. discipline

  939. those

  940. in the church

  941. who are holding

  942. Nicolaitan teaching.

  943. This is so very important

  944. because this dynamic

  945. of church discipline

  946. is so absent

  947. in churches today.

  948. Jesus commanded it

  949. in part

  950. because sin

  951. will spread

  952. like gangrene

  953. through a church

  954. without it.

  955. If we become

  956. tolerant

  957. of ideas

  958. in the church

  959. eventually

  960. it's going to

  961. take over.

  962. Within a generation

  963. or less

  964. a passive

  965. congregation

  966. that is generally

  967. faithful

  968. will totally

  969. abandon

  970. the gospel

  971. itself.

  972. And the progression

  973. of these three churches

  974. is what proves it.

  975. A Pergamum-like

  976. church

  977. that doesn't

  978. repent

  979. and discipline

  980. wayward members

  981. will inevitably

  982. become a

  983. lifeless

  984. dead

  985. Sardis

  986. gospel-less

  987. church.

  988. Why should we

  989. care about

  990. this kind

  991. of discipline?

  992. Because if we

  993. don't

  994. we lose

  995. the purity

  996. of the church

  997. and if we

  998. lose the purity

  999. of the church

  1000. we lose

  1001. the church.

  1002. The second

  1003. thing though

  1004. Jesus commands

  1005. church discipline

  1006. as a means

  1007. of pursuing

  1008. and loving

  1009. wayward

  1010. Christians

  1011. or even

  1012. the culture

  1013. at large.

  1014. When he

  1015. taught that

  1016. process of

  1017. discipline

  1018. in Matthew

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  1019. chapter 18

  1020. Jesus links

  1021. it with that

  1022. famous story

  1023. of the shepherd

  1024. who leaves

  1025. the 99

  1026. and goes

  1027. to the 100.

  1028. what is that

  1029. story about?

  1030. It's about

  1031. the pursuit

  1032. of a sinner.

  1033. It's the

  1034. pursuit

  1035. lovingly

  1036. to restore

  1037. someone

  1038. who has

  1039. left

  1040. the fold.

  1041. Church

  1042. discipline

  1043. is an

  1044. act of

  1045. love

  1046. and verse

  1047. 16 shows

  1048. that very

  1049. clearly.

  1050. Look at the

  1051. difference in

  1052. the pronouns

  1053. used here.

  1054. Jesus says

  1055. he will

  1056. come to

  1057. you

  1058. the church

  1059. that second

  1060. second person

  1061. plural

  1062. he will

  1063. come to

  1064. you the

  1065. church

  1066. but he

  1067. will

  1068. war

  1069. against

  1070. them

  1071. he will

  1072. war

  1073. against

  1074. them

  1075. he'll

  1076. come

  1077. to

  1078. you

  1079. but

  1080. he'll

  1081. war

  1082. against

  1083. them

  1084. those

  1085. who

  1086. are

  1087. holding

  1088. the

  1089. Nicolaitan

  1090. teaching

  1091. and it's

  1092. in this

  1093. context

  1094. that he

  1095. says that

  1096. they are

  1097. to repent

  1098. what is it

  1099. exactly

  1100. that Jesus

  1101. wants them

  1102. to do?

  1103. Well Jesus

  1104. doesn't war

  1105. against his

  1106. own people

  1107. that's one

  1108. of the

  1109. promises

  1110. we have

  1111. he doesn't

  1112. have to

  1113. but the

  1114. one with

  1115. the

  1116. two-edged

  1117. sword

  1118. will

  1119. indeed

  1120. judge

  1121. those

  1122. who

  1123. are

  1124. not

  1125. his

  1126. true

  1127. people

  1128. and

  1129. discipline

  1130. is an

  1131. attempt

  1132. to restore

  1133. someone

  1134. to

  1135. faithfulness

  1136. so that

  1137. when Jesus

  1138. returns

  1139. they will

  1140. not be

  1141. his enemy

  1142. he will

  1143. not be

  1144. at war

  1145. with them

  1146. that's

  1147. really

  1148. that's

  1149. the spirit

  1150. of

  1151. discipline

  1152. it's

  1153. not to

  1154. take

  1155. this

  1156. posture

  1157. of

  1158. superiority

  1159. over

  1160. someone

  1161. or to

  1162. lord

  1163. over

  1164. someone

  1165. else's

  1166. life

  1167. true

  1168. church

  1169. discipline

  1170. and the

  1171. way

  1172. that we

  1173. confront

  1174. people

  1175. that we

  1176. love

  1177. is an

  1178. act

  1179. of

  1180. love

  1181. it is

  1182. a

  1183. pursuing

  1184. of

  1185. them

  1186. so that

  1187. when the

  1188. lord

  1189. does

  1190. come

  1191. he will

  1192. not be

  1193. at war

  1194. with

  1195. them

  1196. that's

  1197. the

  1198. point

  1199. of

  1200. it

  1201. and

  1202. what's

  1203. Jesus

  1204. telling

  1205. the

  1206. program

  1207. church

  1208. to do

  1209. repent

  1210. by dealing

  1211. with the

  1212. people

  1213. in the

  1214. congregation

  1215. confront

  1216. them

  1217. in their

  1218. sin

  1219. confront

  1220. them

  1221. so that

  1222. when I

  1223. come

  1224. to

  1225. you

  1226. I

  1227. will

  1228. not

  1229. be

  1230. at war

  1231. with

  1232. !

  1233. Jim

  1234. Hamilton

  1235. says

  1236. the

  1237. process

  1238. of

  1239. discipline

  1240. is

  1241. motivated

  1242. by a

  1243. desire

  1244. to keep

  1245. Jesus

  1246. from making

  1247. war on

  1248. those

  1249. who are

  1250. holding

  1251. to false

  1252. teaching

  1253. we call

  1254. people to

  1255. repent

  1256. because we

  1257. love them

  1258. and we

  1259. want to

  1260. keep them

  1261. from

  1262. judgment

  1263. and if

  1264. they do

  1265. not

  1266. repent

  1267. we're

  1268. to follow

  1269. the steps

  1270. prescribed

  1271. in Matthew

  1272. 18

  1273. because we

  1274. love

  1275. them

  1276. and want

  1277. to keep

  1278. them

  1279. from

  1280. judgment

  1281. that we

  1282. need to

  1283. be

  1284. careful

  1285. that in

  1286. the way

  1287. that we

  1288. deal

  1289. with the

  1290. people

  1291. that we

  1292. love

  1293. inside

  1294. and outside

  1295. of the

  1296. church

  1297. that our

  1298. love is

  1299. expressed

  1300. in loving

  1301. discipline

  1302. not in

  1303. subtle

  1304. compromise

  1305. we don't

  1306. call people

  1307. to repent

  1308. because we

  1309. hate them

  1310. and if

  1311. your overall

  1312. attitude

  1313. is arrogant

  1314. and hateful

  1315. almost you

  1316. know the

  1317. people that

  1318. they're almost

  1319. happy to

  1320. tell someone

  1321. they almost

  1322. take joy

  1323. in the fact

  1324. that someone

  1325. is lost

  1326. and is facing

  1327. God's wrath

  1328. I was talking

  1329. to a man

  1330. several years

  1331. ago

  1332. he's actually

  1333. dead now

  1334. but this

  1335. man several

  1336. years ago

  1337. he's talking

  1338. about going

  1339. soul winning

  1340. and he was

  1341. offended

  1342. that a person

  1343. on a doorstep

  1344. wasn't very

  1345. kind to him

  1346. and his

  1347. response to

  1348. the man

  1349. was fine

  1350. go to hell

  1351. then

  1352. so that

  1353. that's the

  1354. kind of

  1355. discipline

  1356. that Jesus

  1357. is not

  1358. encouraging

  1359. here

  1360. that's

  1361. actually

  1362. if that's

  1363. your spirit

  1364. when it

  1365. comes to

  1366. our world

  1367. and it

  1368. comes to

  1369. discipline

  1370. in the

  1371. church

  1372. you're

  1373. actually

  1374. the one

  1375. that needs

  1376. to be

  1377. disciplined

  1378. that's not

  1379. what Jesus

  1380. is dealing

  1381. with here

  1382. he's talking

  1383. about a

  1384. loving

  1385. pursuit

  1386. we discipline

  1387. because we

  1388. love them

  1389. and to

  1390. tolerate

  1391. idolatrous

  1392. and immoral

  1393. ideas

  1394. will be a

  1395. death sentence

  1396. for our

  1397. church

  1398. and the

  1399. people who

  1400. have turned

  1401. away from

  1402. the truth

  1403. because the

  1404. fact is

  1405. Jesus

  1406. is coming

  1407. and he

  1408. is coming

  1409. soon

  1410. and I

  1411. don't want

  1412. him to be

  1413. at war

  1414. with me

  1415. and I

  1416. don't want

  1417. him to be

  1418. at war

  1419. with you

  1420. either

  1421. so what

  1422. do we

  1423. do

  1424. we preach

  1425. the gospel

  1426. we bring

  1427. it back

  1428. to the

  1429. word

  1430. we love

  1431. people

  1432. through

  1433. that

  1434. let's

  1435. finish

  1436. with the

  1437. call and

  1438. conquer

  1439. verse 17

  1440. he

  1441. who

  1442. has

  1443. an

  1444. ear

  1445. let

  1446. him

  1447. hear

  1448. what

  1449. the

  1450. spirit

  1451. says

  1452. to

  1453. the

  1454. churches

  1455. to

  1456. the

  1457. one

  1458. who

  1459. conquers

  1460. I

  1461. will

  1462. give

  1463. some

  1464. of

  1465. the

  1466. hidden

  1467. manna

  1468. I

  1469. will

  1470. give

  1471. him

  1472. a

  1473. white

  1474. stone

  1475. with a

  1476. new

  1477. name

  1478. written

  1479. on

  1480. that

  1481. stone

  1482. no one

  1483. knows

  1484. except

  1485. the

  1486. one

  1487. who

  1488. receives

  1489. it

  1490. unfortunately

  1491. Jesus

  1492. never

  1493. ends

  1494. these

  1495. messages

  1496. with a

  1497. threat

  1498. he

  1499. always

  1500. concludes

  1501. with a

  1502. promise

  1503. a

  1504. promise

  1505. for the

  1506. one

  1507. who

  1508. conquers

  1509. to

  1510. conquer

  1511. is to

  1512. persevere

  1513. in

  1514. faith

  1515. not

  1516. because

  1517. you're

  1518. just

  1519. so

  1520. strong

  1521. you

  1522. persevere

  1523. in

  1524. faith

  1525. through

  1526. the

  1527. ultimate

  1528. conqueror

  1529. Jesus

  1530. he

  1531. conquers

  1532. on

  1533. your

  1534. behalf

  1535. that's

  1536. what

  1537. he

  1538. does

  1539. that's

  1540. the

  1541. measure

  1542. of

  1543. his

  1544. grace

  1545. and

  1546. in

  1547. the

  1548. context

  1549. of

  1550. Pergamum

  1551. conquering

  1552. involves

  1553. holding

  1554. fast

  1555. to

  1556. the

  1557. name

  1558. of

  1559. Jesus

  1560. and

  1561. not

  1562. abandoning

  1563. the

  1564. gospel

  1565. despite

  1566. being

  1567. immersed

  1568. in a

  1569. culture

  1570. that is

  1571. completely

  1572. opposed

  1573. to

  1574. him

  1575. it's

  1576. to

  1577. remain

  1578. faithful

  1579. to

  1580. the

  1581. Lord

  1582. remain

  1583. faithful

  1584. to

  1585. our

  1586. Savior

  1587. rather

  1588. than

  1589. finding

  1590. easy

  1591. forms

  1592. of

  1593. compromise

  1594. now

  1595. let's

  1596. look at

  1597. the

  1598. blessing

  1599. two

  1600. things

  1601. they're

  1602. kind

  1603. of

  1604. enigmatic

  1605. aren't

  1606. they

  1607. he

  1608. says

  1609. that

  1610. to

  1611. the

  1612. one

  1613. who

  1614. conquers

  1615. they

  1616. will

  1617. receive

  1618. the

  1619. hidden

  1620. manna

  1621. manna

  1622. of

  1623. course

  1624. was

  1625. the

  1626. food

  1627. God

  1628. supernaturally

  1629. sustained

  1630. Israel

  1631. with

  1632. during

  1633. the

  1634. 40

  1635. years

  1636. they

  1637. wandered

  1638. in

  1639. the

  1640. wilderness

  1641. what

  1642. does

  1643. that

  1644. mean

  1645. for

  1646. us

  1647. God's

  1648. not

  1649. dropping

  1650. honey

  1651. flakes

  1652. from

  1653. the

  1654. sky

  1655. today

  1656. what

  1657. does

  1658. that

  1659. mean

  1660. well

  1661. Jesus

  1662. tells

  1663. us

  1664. what

  1665. it

  1666. means

  1667. in

  1668. John

    John 6 chapter mention

  1669. chapter

  1670. 6

  1671. Jesus

  1672. says

  1673. to

  1674. them

  1675. truly

  1676. truly

  1677. I

  1678. say

  1679. to

  1680. you

  1681. it

  1682. was

  1683. not

  1684. Moses

  1685. who

  1686. gave

  1687. you

  1688. the

  1689. bread

  1690. from

  1691. heaven

  1692. but

  1693. my

  1694. father

  1695. gives

  1696. you

  1697. the

  1698. true

  1699. bread

  1700. from

  1701. heaven

  1702. for

  1703. the

  1704. bread

  1705. of

  1706. God

  1707. is

  1708. he

  1709. who

  1710. comes

  1711. down

  1712. from

  1713. heaven

  1714. and

  1715. gives

  1716. life

  1717. to

  1718. the

  1719. world

  1720. and

  1721. they

  1722. said

  1723. sir

  1724. give

  1725. us

  1726. this

  1727. bread

  1728. always

  1729. and

  1730. Jesus

  1731. said

  1732. I

  1733. am

  1734. the

  1735. bread

  1736. of

  1737. life

  1738. whoever

  1739. comes

  1740. to

  1741. me

  1742. shall

  1743. not

  1744. hunger

  1745. whoever

  1746. believes

  1747. in

  1748. me

  1749. shall

  1750. not

  1751. thirst

  1752. what

  1753. does

  1754. Jesus

  1755. mean

  1756. when

  1757. he

  1758. says

  1759. to

  1760. the

  1761. one

  1762. who

  1763. conquers

  1764. I

  1765. will

  1766. give

  1767. the

  1768. hidden

  1769. manna

  1770. he

  1771. means

  1772. he

  1773. gives

  1774. himself

  1775. to

  1776. those

  1777. who

  1778. come

  1779. to

  1780. him

  1781. he

  1782. is

  1783. the

  1784. bread

  1785. of

  1786. life

  1787. you

  1788. will

  1789. never

  1790. thirst

  1791. !

  1792. again

  1793. this

  1794. promise

  1795. is

  1796. far

  1797. superior

  1798. to

  1799. even

  1800. the

  1801. threat

  1802. of

  1803. the

  1804. sword

  1805. of

  1806. judgment

  1807. it

  1808. is

  1809. wonderfully

  1810. promising

  1811. to

  1812. whoever

  1813. will

  1814. come

  1815. to

  1816. Jesus

  1817. no

  1818. matter

  1819. what

  1820. their

  1821. perspective

  1822. has

  1823. been

  1824. up

  1825. to

  1826. this

  1827. point

  1828. no

  1829. matter

  1830. what

  1831. their

  1832. sin

  1833. is

  1834. at

  1835. this

  1836. point

  1837. he

  1838. will

  1839. receive

  1840. them

  1841. and

  1842. he

  1843. will

  1844. give

  1845. them

  1846. the

  1847. bread

  1848. of

  1849. life

  1850. he

  1851. is

  1852. the

  1853. hidden

  1854. manna

  1855. that

  1856. will

  1857. sustain

  1858. his

  1859. people

  1860. for

  1861. all

  1862. of

  1863. eternity

  1864. not

  1865. for

  1866. 40

  1867. years

  1868. in

  1869. a

  1870. desert

  1871. place

  1872. but

  1873. forever

  1874. and

  1875. ever

  1876. what

  1877. about

  1878. this

  1879. white

  1880. stone

  1881. then

  1882. well

  1883. this

  1884. one's

  1885. harder

  1886. a

  1887. white

  1888. stone

  1889. with

  1890. a

  1891. new

  1892. name

  1893. most

  1894. likely

  1895. refers

  1896. to

  1897. a

  1898. cultural

  1899. practice

  1900. that

  1901. would

  1902. award

  1903. athletes

  1904. or maybe

  1905. important

  1906. people

  1907. for

  1908. different

  1909. gatherings

  1910. and

  1911. celebrations

  1912. with a

  1913. token

  1914. and the

  1915. token

  1916. was a

  1917. small

  1918. white

  1919. stone

  1920. and it

  1921. would

  1922. have

  1923. the

  1924. inscription

  1925. of

  1926. a

  1927. winning

  1928. athlete's

  1929. name

  1930. on it

  1931. which

  1932. meant

  1933. that

  1934. no

  1935. one

  1936. could

  1937. have

  1938. access

  1939. to

  1940. this

  1941. banquet

  1942. unless

  1943. their

  1944. name

  1945. matched

  1946. the

  1947. token

  1948. that

  1949. they

  1950. had

  1951. only

  1952. that

  1953. person

  1954. could

  1955. use

  1956. it

  1957. it

  1958. was

  1959. their

  1960. access

  1961. that's

  1962. most

  2119. in

  2120. the

  2138. this

  2139. promise

  2140. the

  2147. may

  2148. offer

  2149. you

  2150. comfort

  2151. now

  2155. you

  2156. significant

  2162. always

  2163. pleasurable

  2164. for a

  2174. and

  2175. to

  2178. here

  2179. but

  2180. Jesus

  2181. the

  2182. great

  2183. and

  2184. righteous

  2185. judge

  2186. offers

  2187. you

  2188. something

  2189. far

  2190. greater

  2191. than

  2192. that

  2193. the

  2194. hard

  2195. thing

  2196. is

  2197. what

  2198. Jesus

  2199. offers

  2200. will

  2201. cost

  2202. you

  2203. everything

  2204. it'll

  2205. cost

  2206. you

  2207. everything

  2208. it's

  2209. not

  2210. that

  2211. you

  2212. have

  2213. to

  2214. pay

  2215. him

  2216. or

  2217. it's

  2218. not

  2219. that

  2220. you

  2221. have

  2222. to

  2223. fulfill

  2224. !

  2225. a

  2226. list

  2227. of

  2228. things

  2229. to

  2230. do

  2231. but

  2232. in

  2233. that

  2234. favorite

  2235. parable

  2236. of

  2237. mine

  2238. Jesus

  2239. says

  2240. that

  2241. his

  2242. gospel

  2243. the

  2244. kingdom

  2245. he

  2246. himself

  2247. is

  2248. like

  2249. that

  2250. treasure

  2251. hidden

  2252. in

  2253. a

  2254. field

  2255. and

  2256. the

  2257. person

  2258. stumbles

  2259. upon

  2260. the

  2261. treasure

  2262. and

  2263. immediately

  2264. they

  2265. see

  2266. such

  2267. value

  2268. in

  2269. it

  2270. that

  2271. they

  2272. sell

  2273. everything

  2274. that

  2275. they

  2276. have

  2277. in

  2278. order

  2279. to

  2280. buy

  2281. that

  2282. field

  2283. and

  2284. he's

  2285. like

  2286. the

  2287. merchant

  2288. who

  2289. comes

  2290. and

  2291. upon

  2292. finding

  2293. a

  2294. pearl

  2295. of

  2296. great

  2297. price

  2298. pearl

  2299. and

  2300. Jesus

  2301. says

  2302. I'm

  2303. the

  2304. treasure

  2305. I'm

  2306. the

  2307. pearl

  2308. and

  2309. to

  2310. conquer

  2311. what

  2312. Jesus

  2313. is

  2314. saying

  2315. here

  2316. and

  2317. this

  2318. dynamic

  2319. of

  2320. what

  2321. the

  2322. world

  2323. offers

  2324. versus

  2325. what

  2326. Jesus

  2327. offers

  2328. to

  2329. embrace

  2330. the

  2331. gospel

  2332. is

  2333. the

  2334. same

  2335. as

  2336. abandoning

  2337. everything

  2338. else

  2339. in

  2340. heart

  2341. in

  2342. order

  2343. to

  2344. follow

  2345. Jesus

  2346. supremely

  2347. it

  2348. will

  2349. cost

  2350. you

  2351. everything

  2352. it

  2353. may

  2354. cost

  2355. you

  2356. your

  2357. life

  2358. it

  2359. certainly

  2360. going

  2361. to

  2362. cost

  2363. you

  2364. the

  2365. sinful

  2366. pleasure

  2367. of

  2368. this

  2369. world

  2370. because

  2371. Jesus

  2372. calls

  2373. us

  2374. to

  2375. faith

  2376. and

  2377. repentance

  2378. it

  2379. will

  2380. cost

  2381. you

  2382. everything

  2383. but

  2384. look

  2385. what

  2386. is

  2387. gained

  2388. not

  2389. a

  2390. temporary

  2391. satisfaction

  2392. an

  2393. immeasurable

  2394. blessing

  2395. of

  2397. trust

  2398. in

  2399. Christ

  2400. he

  2401. is

  2402. the

  2404. manor

  2405. he

  2406. is

  2407. the

  2408. white

  2410. and

  2411. he

  2412. will

  2413. be

  2414. yours

  2415. if

  2416. you

  2417. will

  2418. just

  2419. turn

  2420. repent

  2421. and

  2422. follow

  2423. him

  2424. he

  2425. who

  2426. has

  2427. an

  2428. ear

  2429. let

  2430. him

  2431. hear

  2432. what

  2433. the

  2434. spirit

  2435. says

  2436. to

  2437. the
