  1. Charles Simeon was an Anglican minister who lived in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

  2. Today he's remembered and honored in the evangelical community for his lifelong commitment to

  3. expositional preaching, faithful leadership among evangelical Anglicans of his time,

  4. other things he was responsible for helping found the missionary society in the early 1800s which

  5. was very effective and noteworthy. He was a leader among those who were faithful to their gospel

  6. convictions during his time but life and ministry if you know anything about Charles Simeon was

  7. anything but easy. After graduating from King's College in Cambridge Simeon was appointed by the

  8. local Anglican bishop to be the vicar or pastor of Trinity Church Cambridge. Now nothing about that

  9. seems unusual until you learn that the church did not want Charles Simeon to be their pastor.

  10. There was an assistant pastor there that they wanted more. Mr. Hammond, that's the one that they

  11. really wanted as a church and they fought against this bishop because they did not want Charles Simeon

  12. but Charles Simeon out of humility which was probably from what we understand historically

  13. was probably not very natural to him especially at that point in his life in a humble statement went

  14. to the bishop and says if the church doesn't want me it's probably not a good idea for me to be there.

  15. The bishop responds even if you don't go I'm not putting Mr. Hammond in this place and Charles Simeon

  16. feels at that point that there is a unique calling of God on his life to go to this church and so he

  17. remains. Now here's what's interesting about it. The church didn't care that he wanted to be there.

  18. In that this is a different world this is a different kind of framework for church life and church policy.

  19. At that time the vicar of the church the pastor of the church was responsible and had authority for the

  20. morning worship service. The congregation however and the church wardens had responsibility for their

  21. afternoon service and so the church refuses to let Charles Simeon their pastor be the lecturer in the

  22. afternoon service. He could do his thing on Sunday morning but they refused to let him speak on Sunday

  23. afternoon. For his first five years the assistant pastor is the one that they gathered to hear speak

  24. on Sunday afternoons. Well then Mr. Hammond decided to leave and he leaves the church and he goes on

  25. to other things and the church still refuses to let Simeon be the afternoon lecturer. Instead they hire and

  26. pay an independent preacher that does not belong to them in order to come and do the afternoon lecture

  27. and he does that for the next seven years. So for the first 12 years of Charles Simeon's ministry at

  28. Trinity Church Cambridge he was not even allowed by the congregation to preach in the evening service or the

  29. afternoon service. He tried to discharge his duties as a pastor and to do pastoral calls and visits for

  30. the people in the church and they refused to open the door and let him in. They scarcely attended the

  31. morning worship service and the pew holders which is interesting if you've ever seen a picture of an old

  32. church a congregational meeting house or something like that there were pews and the pews had doors on the

  33. end so you had to be able to get in the door to get into the pew. Well you could rent or purchase your

  34. pew. It's a completely different concept of somebody sitting in your seat at church. That was a reality.

  35. There were certain things they were allowed to do whether it was to decorate or to put things in

  36. their pew that they wanted to keep for themselves and they had locks on the doors of the pews. What the

  37. pew holders would do is they would come in and they would lock the doors to the pews so that whoever came to

  38. the morning worship service couldn't have a place to sit. So for 12 years Simeon preaches on Sunday

  39. mornings to people who would have to sit or stand in the aisles or in the corners or the nooks of the

  40. church building. At one point he personally purchases chairs for people to sit in. The church

  41. wardens in protest to that come in take the chairs that he purchases and throws them into the church yard.

  42. Simeon later would decide that he would give his own go at having his own evening service that would

  43. take place after the afternoon service and in objection to that the church wardens came in and

  44. locked the door so Simeon and no one else could even get in the building. 12 years of this. Now most of us

  45. would have left this church very early if we would even win. Simeon out of a deep sense of calling from

  46. God endured the opposition stayed faithful to discharge his duties as a pastor.

  47. After 12 years the situation at Trinity Church gets better but life is still difficult for Simeon.

  48. At this point he's a teaching fellow at King's College in Cambridge. He lived on the campus. He

  49. never was married. He lived on the campus his entire ministry and he would preach in the church that was

  50. nearby. He was a teacher there but he faced severe opposition for his gospel convictions.

  51. Not only from the faculty but also from the students. Students would routinely interrupt his lectures.

  52. They would gather on Sunday mornings in the streets and outside the church where he preached just to

  53. disturb his preaching. His relationship with the other faculty was such that he writes in a journal how

  54. overjoyed he was one day that one of his colleagues took the time to walk with him for 15 minutes around the college courtyard.

  55. He was an outcast. Nobody wanted him. They didn't want to listen to him because of his stand for gospel truth.

  56. Throughout his life Simeon endured occasional uprisings of disunity in the church.

  57. Bouts with failing health for 13 years. He thought he was going to die every time he preached.

  58. An intense opposition from those who did not appreciate his gospel preaching.

  59. He had every human reason to quit but he continued faithfully for 54 years at Trinity Church and at King's College

  60. until just before his death in 1836.

  61. Later in his life one of his friends asked him how he had persevered through the opposition of his ministry

  62. and Simeon responded this way. I think I have this quote for you if you want to read it on the screen.

  63. Here's how he responded.

  64. Brother, we must not mind a little suffering for Christ's sake.

  65. Let us rejoice in the remembrance that Christ has surmounted all his suffering and triumphed over death.

  66. Let us follow him patiently.

  67. We shall soon be partakers of his victory.

  68. In the sermon to the church of Philadelphia

  69. we find a story that is similar to Charles Simeon's.

  70. It was a congregation of little power

  71. that persevered in uncompromising faith

  72. amid severe opposition.

  73. They trusted that Christ's suffering and triumph over death

  74. guaranteed their sharing in his victory

  75. and Jesus comes to them in this sermon with amazing comfort.

  76. And if you've been with us through these now seven messages

  77. through these two chapters or two and a half chapters

  78. perhaps you will find with me that this text is a bit of fresh air.

  79. While most of the other churches we've studied are failing

  80. through either complacency or compromise

  81. it's refreshing to read of a church

  82. that was steadfast in the gospel.

  83. But the overwhelming encouragement of this particular message from Jesus

  84. comes from the fact that Jesus took notice of their faithfulness.

  85. In fact it becomes abundantly clear

  86. that Jesus' purpose in this message

  87. this sermon to Philadelphia

  88. is to reassure the beleaguered congregation.

  89. He goes above and beyond to emphasize his divine power

  90. for their good

  91. because of their faithfulness.

  92. So let's dive in

  93. and see what Jesus has to say

  94. to the church at Lake Norman

  95. through his sermon

  96. to the church of uncompromising perseverance.

  97. Let's consider first the church identity

  98. in Christ's title as always.

  99. Verse 7

  100. To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write

  101. the words of the Holy One

  102. the true One

  103. who has the key of David

  104. who opens and no one will shut

  105. who shuts and no one opens.

  106. Philadelphia as you know

  107. is the city of brotherly love

  108. and it was so named

  109. because of the

  110. to honor a man of intense loyalty and love

  111. for his brother

  112. who was an ancient king of Pergamum.

  113. But love and loyalty was not

  114. the experience for the Christians in Philadelphia.

  115. It's quite the opposite actually.

  116. Like all the Christian churches

  117. that we've studied at that time

  118. the constant threat of persecution

  119. from the Greco-Roman society

  120. in which they lived

  121. was a reality for these believers.

  122. But like the church in Smyrna

  123. which is its parallel

  124. in the general structure

  125. of these chapters

  126. like the church in Smyrna

  127. the opposition that Jesus addresses

  128. in this sermon

  129. is focused primarily on the Jewish community

  130. what Jesus calls the synagogue of Satan.

  131. The message to Smyrna

  132. emphasized the slander that came from the Jews.

  133. They were serving as informants

  134. somewhat to the Romans.

  135. Remember how we talked about

  136. the slander and the shape that it would take?

  137. They were taking common Christian doctrines

  138. they were twisting them

  139. and perverting them

  140. and presenting them

  141. as things that were a threat to Roman society.

  142. Remember the Jews were taking

  143. the doctrine of communion

  144. the Lord's Supper

  145. and they were accusing the Christians

  146. of being cannibals

  147. which was against Roman law.

  148. They were thought of as atheists

  149. not because they didn't believe there was a God

  150. but because they denied all other gods

  151. except for Jesus.

  152. There were many other things

  153. doctrines that were taken

  154. and were twisted

  155. and purported by the Jews

  156. to be in violation of Roman law.

  157. They were seeking to make a distinction

  158. between themselves and the Christians

  159. so that they wouldn't suffer

  160. the same persecution

  161. that the Christians were suffering.

  162. So some of them became informants.

  163. That's primarily what Smyrna was dealing with.

  164. We would assume

  165. though it's not listed explicitly

  166. that that is very much the case

  167. for the church in Philadelphia as well.

  168. Now it will help us to understand too

  169. which seems to be the focus

  170. or the primary problem in Philadelphia

  171. that some early Christians

  172. continued their memberships

  173. in the local synagogues

  174. to take advantage of the fact

  175. that many couldn't distinguish clearly

  176. between Judaism and Christianity.

  177. In the Greco-Roman world

  178. Christianity was just

  179. primarily considered a sect

  180. within Judaism.

  181. And so there wasn't a lot of

  182. distinguishment that people could make

  183. unless they were just very familiar

  184. with the preaching of the Christians.

  185. And so these early Christians

  186. some of them would maintain

  187. their memberships in the synagogue

  188. as a form of protection.

  189. The Jews had an agreement

  190. with the Romans

  191. that they could persist without problems

  192. as long as the Jews

  193. didn't create problems for Rome.

  194. Christians were taking advantage of that

  195. almost masking the fact

  196. that they were Christians

  197. to some extent

  198. but it was something that was happening.

  199. Eventually Jewish leaders realized

  200. that Christians were enjoying protection

  201. due to their political arrangement

  202. so they closed the door

  203. as it were

  204. by kicking Christians out of their synagogues.

  205. Something Jesus said to the disciples

  206. clearly would happen.

  207. Remember in John chapter 16

    John 16 chapter mention

  208. Jesus tells his disciples

  209. I have said all these things to you

  210. to keep you from falling away.

  211. He's warning them of what is to come.

  212. They will put you out of the synagogues.

  213. Indeed the hour is coming

  214. when whoever kills you

  215. will think he is offering service to God.

  216. And they will do these things

  217. because they have not known the Father nor me.

  218. But I have said these things to you

  219. that when their hour comes

  220. you may remember

  221. that I told them to you.

  222. Now do you see the parallels

  223. between what Jesus was saying in John 16

  224. and what he's now saying

  225. to the church in Philadelphia?

  226. There will be these Jews.

  227. They're going to kick you out of the synagogue.

  228. They're going to cut you off.

  229. And then they're going to try to kill you.

  230. They're going to become informants

  231. as we find out historically they become.

  232. They're going to become informants

  233. to the Roman authorities in Philadelphia

  234. that are going to try to kill you.

  235. And they're going to think they're doing that

  236. in the name of God.

  237. But they don't know me, Jesus says.

  238. They don't know the Father.

  239. And when their hour comes

  240. you'll remember what I'm telling you.

  241. Stay faithful.

  242. And now he says it to the Philadelphians

  243. who are experiencing that very thing.

  244. They've been cut off by the Jews.

  245. They're exposed.

  246. They have no protection.

  247. The Jews are actively trying to have them killed

  248. by turning them into Roman authorities.

  249. And now they must be reminded of Jesus's words.

  250. This is what Jesus said would happen.

  251. Our responsibility now is to be faithful.

  252. And that's exactly what this church was.

  253. Now let's think about these Christ titles

  254. for just a minute.

  255. It's against this backdrop

  256. that we are to understand

  257. Jesus's self-revelation here.

  258. He uses three titles.

  259. All that have significant Old Testament parallels.

  260. And we'll try to spell that out.

  261. That he is the Holy One.

  262. A term that's used dozens of times

  263. in the Old Testament to refer to God.

  264. Is a not so subtle way

  265. of Jesus declaring his own deity.

  266. Jesus is God.

  267. He is the Holy One.

  268. One of the Jews' most significant issues

  269. with Christianity still today

  270. has always been Jesus's claims of divinity.

  271. His claims of divinity.

  272. That he claimed to be one with God

  273. was unthinkable to them.

  274. And it's a critical element

  275. in their vehemence against Jesus.

  276. Not only in ancient history

  277. but also in modern history.

  278. So this title would have come

  279. as uniquely reassuring to this church.

  280. Here's the Jews

  281. who have had the scriptures

  282. who have been the privileged people

  283. as far as the scriptures are concerned.

  284. And they're coming

  285. and they're working against Christ

  286. and against these Christians

  287. saying that Jesus is an imposter.

  288. Well now Jesus comes

  289. and he reassures them.

  290. It doesn't matter

  291. what the Jews are saying.

  292. They belong to the synagogue of Satan.

  293. They're liars.

  294. I am the Holy One.

  295. I am God.

  296. He's the Holy One.

  297. That's a reassuring statement

  298. for this church.

  299. That he declares himself

  300. to be the true one

  301. is a polemic against these Jews

  302. who he calls liars

  303. in verse 9.

  304. It speaks to his utter reliability.

  305. He can be trusted.

  306. But notice again

  307. the declaration of deity here.

  308. Jesus is the true one.

  309. Meaning his trustworthiness

  310. is perfect

  311. and it's exclusive

  312. in a way that can only belong to God.

  313. It can only belong to God.

  314. They are liars, Jesus says.

  315. I'll never lie to you.

  316. They're deceivers.

  317. But I am the true one.

  318. And someone might argue

  319. they may push back against it

  320. and they say

  321. well don't all cult leaders

  322. make similar statements?

  323. Don't they all say

  324. that they're the Holy One?

  325. That they're the true one?

  326. That they're the ones

  327. that will not lie?

  328. That everyone else is deceiving?

  329. What's the difference

  330. between them and Jesus?

  331. Why would we listen to Jesus?

  332. Do you know the answer?

  333. Resurrection.

  334. Resurrection.

  335. Resurrection changes everything.

  336. One other cult leader

  337. has died and come back to life.

  338. Sure there may have been

  339. signs of power

  340. and other things

  341. that probably are initiated

  342. from the evil one.

  343. Jesus comes with divine power.

  344. Ultimate power

  345. that's proven finally

  346. in his resurrection.

  347. He is the true one.

  348. He is the Holy One.

  349. The third title.

  350. He is the one

  351. who has the key of David.

  352. The key of David.

  353. Now this is an interesting title.

  354. To fully appreciate it

  355. we need to go back

  356. to its Old Testament counterpart.

  357. In fact

  358. if you can get there quickly

  359. turn to Isaiah 22.

  360. Isaiah chapter 22.

    Isaiah 22 chapter mention

  361. You can read the whole passage later

  362. if you'd like.

  363. I want to point

  364. out one verse

  365. especially to you.

  366. Isaiah chapter 22.

    Isaiah 22 chapter mention

  367. Let me give you the background

  368. of what's happening

  369. before we read the verse.

  370. Shebna

  371. was the palace steward

  372. in Jerusalem

  373. which was a very

  374. powerful position

  375. akin to

  376. the president's

  377. chief of staff

  378. we would say.

  379. If anyone

  380. wanted access

  381. to the palace

  382. or access

  383. to the king

  384. they had to go through

  385. his chief executive

  386. which was

  387. the palace steward.

  388. And at this point

  389. in Isaiah's writing

  390. it's King Hezekiah

  391. and King Hezekiah's

  392. palace steward

  393. is a man named Shebna

  394. but because of his arrogance

  395. you can read in the chapter

  396. because of his arrogance

  397. God removes

  398. Shebna from power

  399. and he replaces him

  400. with a man named

  401. Eliakim.

  402. And here's what God says

  403. through Isaiah

  404. would be true

  405. of Eliakim.

  406. Look at verse 22.

  407. And I will place

  408. on his shoulder

  409. recognize the parallel

  410. the key

  411. of the house

  412. of David

  413. he shall open

  414. and none

  415. shall shut

  416. he shall shut

  417. and none

  418. shall open.

  419. Okay.

  420. Almost certainly

  421. Jesus

  422. is using

  423. this Old Testament

  424. allusion

  425. as he speaks

  426. of himself

  427. to the

  428. Philadelphian church

  429. in Revelation

    Revelation 3 chapter mention

  430. chapter 3.

  431. And when he says

  432. that he is

  433. the one

  434. with the key

  435. of David

  436. who opens

  437. and no one shuts

  438. who shuts

  439. and no one opens

  440. what he means

  441. is that he

  442. is the only one

  443. with absolute

  444. authority

  445. over who can

  446. enter

  447. the kingdom

  448. of God.

  449. That's his point.

  450. The Jews

  451. may have had

  452. authority

  453. over their synagogue

  454. over who could

  455. belong there

  456. and who couldn't

  457. belong there

  458. but Jesus

  459. is the one

  460. who grants

  461. entrance

  462. to the

  463. eternal

  464. kingdom.

  465. Only

  466. Jesus.

  467. Not your parents

  468. not your church

  469. not anyone else

  470. Jesus

  471. only.

  472. And their

  473. Jewish and Roman

  474. oppressors

  475. had no power

  476. over their

  477. heavenly citizenship.

  478. That authority

  479. belongs to Jesus

  480. and he reminds

  481. this church

  482. right off the bat

  483. just with

  484. the self-revelation

  485. of who he is

  486. that no one

  487. can shut

  488. a door

  489. that he opens.

  490. He is the one

  491. with the key.

  492. And though this world

  493. with devil's field

  494. we'll sing later

  495. should threaten

  496. to undo us

  497. we will not fear

  498. for God has willed

  499. his truth

  500. to triumph

  501. through us.

  502. So let goods

  503. and kindred

  504. go

  505. this mortal

  506. life also

  507. the body

  508. they may kill

  509. God's truth

  510. abideth still

  511. his kingdom

  512. is forever.

  513. Now what comfort

  514. would this have come

  515. to the church

  516. in Philadelphia?

  517. What comfort

  518. it should bring

  519. to you?

  520. Our world

  521. is just as broken

  522. as theirs.

  523. The severity

  524. of our opposition

  525. may not be

  526. to the same level

  527. not yet

  528. but our world

  529. is just as broken.

  530. The threats

  531. against us

  532. will grow

  533. more and more

  534. severe.

  535. What is it

  536. that will give us

  537. comfort and hope

  538. but to acknowledge

  539. that our Savior

  540. our Lord

  541. is the one

  542. with the key

  543. of David?

  544. He's the one

  545. with authority

  546. over the kingdom.

  547. They may have

  548. authority

  549. in this life

  550. only he has

  551. authority

  552. in the next one

  553. and those

  554. who are faithful

  555. to him

  556. will have

  557. an open door

  558. that no one

  559. can shut.

  560. Let's look

  561. at the commendation.

  562. The churches

  563. in Smyrna

  564. and Philadelphia

  565. as you probably

  566. have already noticed

  567. are the only ones

  568. that are not

  569. confronted by Jesus.

  570. There's no correction

  571. there's no threat

  572. or call to repentance.

  573. It's all

  574. commendation

  575. and exhortation

  576. for them

  577. and the commendation

  578. for Philadelphia

  579. extends from verses

  580. 8 to 10

  581. but its structure

  582. is unique

  583. which is why

  584. I'm pointing it out.

  585. Jesus commends

  586. them three

  587. different times

  588. and each time

  589. he has

  590. a promise

  591. that he immediately

  592. attaches

  593. to the commendation.

  594. So I want to

  595. break it up

  596. into those three

  597. sections.

  598. The first one

  599. is in the first part

  600. of verse 8.

  601. Look at verse 8.

  602. I know your works

  603. that's the commendation.

  604. Here's the immediate

  605. promise that follows.

  606. It's almost a

  607. parenthetical statement.

  608. Behold

  609. I have set

  610. before you

  611. an open door

  612. which no one

  613. is able

  614. to shut.

  615. Now to every

  616. single one

  617. of these churches

  618. Jesus says

  619. I know.

  620. Remember in chapter 1

  621. he walks

  622. among the golden

  623. lampstands

  624. those are the churches

  625. he holds

  626. the seven stars

  627. in his right hand

  628. those are the pastors.

  629. In other words

  630. Jesus knows

  631. everything about

  632. the churches

  633. and he has

  634. sovereignty

  635. and authority

  636. over them.

  637. And for many

  638. churches

  639. if they are

  640. to hear Jesus

  641. say

  642. I know

  643. your works

  644. it would induce

  645. a measure

  646. of anxiety

  647. to be reminded

  648. of the fact

  649. that God

  650. sees all

  651. and he knows

  652. the reality

  653. of my heart

  654. and the reality

  655. of what

  656. no one else

  657. may know

  658. is terrifying.

  659. dying.

  660. But for the church

  661. in Philadelphia

  662. this brought

  663. great comfort.

  664. Why?

  665. Not because

  666. they were perfect

  667. but because

  668. they were neither

  669. complacent

  670. nor were they

  671. entertaining

  672. compromise

  673. and to be

  674. reminded

  675. that Jesus

  676. is fully aware

  677. of their

  678. perseverance

  679. had to have

  680. brought

  681. amazing joy.

  682. I know

  683. your works.

  684. When Jesus

  685. says that

  686. to Sardis

  687. it's a problem.

  688. When he says

  689. it to Philadelphia

  690. it's a relief.

  691. Relief.

  692. He knows.

  693. He sees

  694. our faithfulness.

  695. He knows

  696. we're struggling

  697. and toiling

  698. for him

  699. and for his

  700. name.

  701. He knows.

  702. And what is

  703. the promise?

  704. The one

  705. with the key

  706. of David

  707. opened for them

  708. a door of heaven

  709. that no one

  710. would be able

  711. to shut.

  712. I know your

  713. works.

  714. I have the

  715. key.

  716. I've opened

  717. the door.

  718. Walk through.

  719. No one

  720. can shut it.

  721. It's yours.

  722. Right?

  723. Second one.

  724. Second part

  725. of verse

  726. eight.

  727. Here's the

  728. commendation.

  729. I know

  730. that you

  731. have but

  732. little power

  733. and yet

  734. you have

  735. kept my

  736. word

  737. and have

  738. not denied

  739. my name.

  740. Here's the

  741. promise.

  742. Behold

  743. I will

  744. make those

  745. of the

  746. synagogue

  747. of Satan

  748. who say

  749. that they

  750. are Jews

  751. and are

  752. not

  753. but lie.

  754. He doesn't

  755. mean that

  756. they're faking

  757. their nationality.

  758. That's not

  759. what he means.

  760. When he's

  761. using Jew

  762. here he

  763. means he's

  764. referring to

  765. the true

  766. people of

  767. God.

  768. They say

  769. that they

  770. are the

  771. true people

  772. of God

  773. but they're

  774. not.

  775. They're

  776. liars.

  777. Behold

  778. I will

  779. make them

  780. come and

  781. bow down

  782. before your

  783. feet

  784. and they

  785. will learn

  786. that I

  787. have loved

  788. you.

  789. So both

  790. the commendation

  791. and the

  792. promise

  793. gets more

  794. specific.

  795. Despite

  796. having little

  797. power

  798. the

  799. Philadelphian

  800. Christians

  801. obeyed

  802. Christ's

  803. words

  804. and refused

  805. to deny

  806. his name.

  807. Now think

  808. about their

  809. context.

  810. As much

  811. as they

  812. would have

  813. wanted the

  814. sense of

  815. security

  816. that came

  817. with being

  818. linked to

  819. the synagogue

  820. they would

  821. not compromise

  822. their faith

  823. in and

  824. obedience

  825. to Christ

  826. for comfort

  827. in this

  828. world.

  829. For a

  830. season

  831. there was

  832. a loophole.

  833. They could

  834. kind of sneak

  835. along.

  836. They had

  837. this kind

  838. of link

  839. to Judaism

  840. until the

  841. Jews made

  842. sure that

  843. link no longer

  844. existed.

  845. Now they had

  846. a choice

  847. at that

  848. moment.

  849. We could

  850. either just

  851. kind of

  852. diminish

  853. all of this

  854. Christian

  855. stuff,

  856. this Christ

  857. stuff,

  858. and just

  859. seek comfort

  860. and security

  861. or we

  862. can embrace

  863. Christ knowing

  864. that it will

  865. cost us

  866. everything.

  867. And what did

  868. the Philadelphian

  869. church do?

  870. They embraced

  871. Christ.

  872. They did

  873. not deny

  874. his words.

  875. They did

  876. not deny

  877. his name.

  878. They remained

  879. faithful,

  880. uncompromisingly

  881. persevering.

  882. And they

  883. have little

  884. power.

  885. There's no

  886. political or

  887. cultural power

  888. for this little

  889. church to lean

  890. on, yet

  891. they publicly

  892. remain faithful.

  893. Now is that

  894. not a word

  895. for us?

  896. We have

  897. no power.

  898. Nobody cares

  899. about us.

  900. We may think

  901. of Christianity

  902. like that in

  903. general.

  904. Let's just

  905. think about it

  906. in terms of

  907. Lakeside Bible

  908. Church for a

  909. moment.

  910. There's what,

  911. 30 of us here

  912. this morning?

  913. I know there's

  914. more that belongs

  915. to our church,

  916. but this morning

  917. there's about

  918. 30 of us here.

  919. We have no

  920. power.

  921. We have no

  922. influence in

  923. this community.

  924. If they all

  925. turned on us

  926. right now,

  927. we'd have

  928. nothing to

  929. lean on.

  930. We would

  931. have to face

  932. this same

  933. dilemma.

  934. Do we

  935. diminish our

  936. stand,

  937. our gospel

  938. convictions,

  939. in order to

  940. maintain some

  941. type of

  942. comfort and

  943. peace with

  944. the people

  945. around us?

  946. Or do we

  947. embrace Christ

  948. and proclaim

  949. Christ,

  950. knowing it's

  951. going to cost

  952. us everything?

  953. Christians in

  954. Philadelphia said

  955. Christ is

  956. worth it.

  957. And what's

  958. the promise

  959. that they

  960. received?

  961. The promise

  962. is not,

  963. I'm going to

  964. make things

  965. better for

  966. you right

  967. now.

  968. And I

  969. think it's

  970. important that

  971. we recognize

  972. that.

  973. Because there

  974. are some

  975. people out

  976. there that

  977. will try to

  978. tell you that

  979. if you just

  980. come to

  981. Christ and

  982. you just

  983. join our

  984. church,

  985. and if you

  986. do the

  987. things and

  988. you do your

  989. best and

  990. you try your

  991. hardest,

  992. what God's

  993. going to

  994. do for you

  995. is going to

  996. make you

  997. happy,

  998. and he's

  999. going to

  1000. make things

  1001. easy,

  1002. and if your

  1003. life isn't

  1004. easy, it's

  1005. because you're

  1006. not believing

  1007. hard enough.

  1008. It's a problem

  1009. with your

  1010. faith.

  1011. But Jesus

  1012. comes to this

  1013. church that he

  1014. commends more

  1015. than any other

  1016. church with the

  1017. exception of

  1018. Smyrna.

  1019. And he says,

  1020. I realize your

  1021. faithfulness, I

  1022. know you're

  1023. faithful, I

  1024. know you're

  1025. more faithful than

  1026. these other

  1027. churches are.

  1028. But the

  1029. promise that he

  1030. gives them is

  1031. not, I'm going

  1032. to take care of

  1033. the Jews real

  1034. quick here for

  1035. you so that

  1036. you can be

  1037. more comfortable.

  1038. He doesn't do

  1039. that.

  1040. What's the

  1041. promise?

  1042. The promise

  1043. that they

  1044. received is

  1045. that they

  1046. would ultimately

  1047. be vindicated,

  1048. not now, but

  1049. at the

  1050. judgment.

  1051. You see, that's

  1052. the point here.

  1053. It's not about

  1054. the Jews bowing

  1055. down before

  1056. Christians.

  1057. That's not the

  1058. emphasis here.

  1059. That's metaphorical

  1060. language that

  1061. Jesus is using

  1062. to say, in the

  1063. end, in the

  1064. judgment, Christians

  1065. will be vindicated.

  1066. The ones who

  1067. deny Christ and

  1068. his followers will,

  1069. in the end, know

  1070. that they are

  1071. wrong.

  1072. The Jews who

  1073. wrongly believe

  1074. themselves to be

  1075. the true people of

  1076. God will learn

  1077. that God's love is

  1078. set on those who

  1079. believe and follow

  1080. Christ.

  1081. They will know,

  1082. Jesus says, that I

  1083. have loved you,

  1084. that you were

  1085. mine, that you

  1086. were the real,

  1087. true people of

  1088. God.

  1089. The vindication

  1090. comes in the end.

1091. Can I ask you, is

  1092. that enough for

  1093. you?

  1094. Are you good with

1095. Jesus so long as he

  1096. brings you some kind

  1097. of vindication now?

1098. Or is it enough for

  1099. you that he promises

  1100. to vindicate you

  1101. then in the

  1102. judgment?

  1103. The third set

  1104. comes in verse

  1105. 10.

  1106. Because you have

  1107. kept my word about

  1108. patient endurance,

  1109. that's the

  1110. commendation, here's

  1111. the promise,

  1112. I will keep you

  1113. from the hour of

  1114. trial that is

  1115. coming on the

  1116. whole world to

  1117. try those who

  1118. dwell on the

  1119. earth.

  1120. So here in the

  1121. final commendation,

  1122. Jesus restates that

  1123. these Christians have

  1124. kept his word

  1125. regarding patient

  1126. endurance.

  1127. Now, let's talk

  1128. about the word of

  1129. patient endurance.

  1130. Jesus specifically

  1131. and explicitly

  1132. taught this.

  1133. Several places,

1134. I'll read it to you

  1135. from Matthew 10.

  1136. brother will

  1137. deliver brother

  1138. over to death,

  1139. Jesus says.

  1140. The father

  1141. his child.

  1142. Children will

  1143. rise against

  1144. parents and

  1145. have them put

  1146. to death.

  1147. All of this is

  1148. in the context

  1149. of the gospel.

  1150. That all of this

  1151. will be happening.

  1152. Our own families

  1153. will be turning

  1154. against us because

  1155. of our commitment

  1156. to Christ.

  1157. And then Jesus

  1158. says, you will

  1159. be hated

  1160. by all

  1161. for my

  1162. name's sake.

  1163. But the one

  1164. who endures

  1165. to the end

  1166. will be saved.

  1167. The one who

  1168. endures to the end

  1169. will be saved.

  1170. That's the word

  1171. about patient

  1172. endurance

  1173. that Jesus

  1174. preached.

  1175. And it would

  1176. have been taught

  1177. to these

  1178. Philadelphian

  1179. Christians through

  1180. the apostolic

  1181. teaching.

  1182. And Jesus

  1183. promises the

  1184. Philadelphian

  1185. church that

  1186. their faithful

  1187. endurance will

  1188. be met with

  1189. his divine

  1190. protection

  1191. when he returns

  1192. to judge

  1193. the earth.

  1194. Notice the

  1195. language.

  1196. There is this

  1197. hour of trial

  1198. that is coming

  1199. on the whole

  1200. world

  1201. to try those

  1202. who dwell on

  1203. the earth.

  1204. What is this

  1205. all about?

  1206. The hour of

  1207. trial, I

  1208. believe, to be

  1209. this period of

  1210. tribulation

  1211. leading to

  1212. Christ's second

  1213. coming.

  1214. That's going to

  1215. be described in

  1216. the subsequent

  1217. chapters of

  1218. Revelation beyond

  1219. this chapter.

  1220. And there

  1221. are all kinds

  1222. of suggestions

  1223. about what it

  1224. means to be

  1225. kept from that

  1226. hour of trial.

  1227. Some, and

  1228. maybe some of

  1229. you even would

  1230. believe this to

  1231. be a kind of

  1232. a secret

  1233. rapture that

  1234. Jesus will

  1235. remove his

  1236. people, literally

  1237. physically remove

  1238. them from the

  1239. earth.

  1240. Others believe

  1241. that they will

  1242. be protected,

  1243. untouched by

  1244. the judgment

  1245. though they

  1246. remain on the

  1247. earth.

  1248. It's not my

  1249. intention to get

  1250. into those

  1251. debates, at

  1252. least in the

  1253. sermon.

  1254. We can talk

  1255. about it after

  1256. the service

  1257. perhaps.

  1258. The bottom

  1259. line is this.

  1260. Those who

  1261. persevere in

  1262. the gospel will

  1263. not be in

  1264. danger of

  1265. Christ's judgment

  1266. on the earth.

  1267. That's the

  1268. bottom line.

  1269. Because of

  1270. their patient

  1271. endurance, because

  1272. they endure in

  1273. the faith all

  1274. the way to the

  1275. end, they will

  1276. be kept from

  1277. the hour of

  1278. trial.

  1279. Meaning, you

  1280. will not have

  1281. to stand before

  1282. Christ and give

  1283. account for

  1284. your sin, because

  1285. you belong to

  1286. him, and you

  1287. have stayed the

  1288. course.

  1289. The holy, true

  1290. one will keep his

  1291. people safe and

  1292. secure as he

  1293. ushers them into

  1294. eternity.

  1295. Isn't that a

  1296. wonderful promise?

  1297. It's amazing.

  1298. Remember, growing

  1299. up, people would

  1300. talk about the

  1301. book of Revelation

  1302. and all this

  1303. imagery, and to be

  1304. quite honest with

  1305. you, especially

  1306. as a kid, even

  1307. as an adult, it

  1308. is absolutely

  1309. terrifying.

  1310. I mean, you

  1311. got creatures

  1312. coming out of

  1313. the earth that

  1314. look like scorpions

  1315. and they have

  1316. stingers and

  1317. they're going to

  1318. sting people.

  1319. That's weird.

  1320. Let's be honest,

  1321. that's weird.

  1322. That's terrifying.

  1323. And I remember

  1324. even as a

  1325. Christian young

  1326. person, I would

  1327. read about those

  1328. things, or I

  1329. would think about

  1330. those things, or

  1331. people would teach

  1332. them, and I would

  1333. just be filled

  1334. with fear.

  1335. I don't want to

  1336. have to endure

  1337. that.

  1338. And then

  1339. Jesus comes and

  1340. he says, you

  1341. won't have to

  1342. endure that.

  1343. If you're mine, I

  1344. will keep you from

  1345. the hour of trial

1346. that is to come on

  1347. the whore.

  1348. Now, considering

  1349. this commendation,

  1350. now we're

  1351. considering all

  1352. three parts of

  1353. it, what is it

  1354. that we can

  1355. discern that Jesus

  1356. desires from his

  1357. people?

  1358. What does he

  1359. desire from us?

  1360. Clearly, Jesus

  1361. is not concerned

  1362. with or impressed

  1363. by elaborate

  1364. ministries with

  1365. political influence,

  1366. dynamic metrics,

  1367. and buildings,

  1368. and staff, and

  1369. money, and all the

  1370. things that come

  1371. along with it.

  1372. Now, I'm not

  1373. disparaging those

  1374. things.

  1375. It is sometimes,

  1376. out of the faithful

  1377. blessing of Jesus,

  1378. that some churches

  1379. and some Christian

  1380. groups enjoy that

  1381. for a season.

  1382. I'm not taking

  1383. away from that.

  1384. What I'm saying

  1385. is that those

  1386. are not the

  1387. things that Jesus

  1388. intends for us to

  1389. pursue as our

  1390. focus.

  1391. What is it that

  1392. Jesus desires from

  1393. his churches?

  1394. Not that they try

1395. to get as big as

  1396. they can get and

  1397. have all the

  1398. influence that they

  1399. can possibly have

  1400. in all those

  1401. things.

  1402. That can't be

  1403. our focus.

  1404. In fact, Jesus

  1405. doesn't commend in

  1406. these sermons any

  1407. of the things that

1408. we tend to value in

  1409. contemporary

  1410. Christianity.

  1411. Jesus values

  1412. faithfulness.

  1413. He desires that we

  1414. keep his word and

  1415. glorify his name.

  1416. He commends

  1417. uncompromising

  1418. perseverance.

  1419. And if we're going

  1420. to be a

  1421. Philadelphian church,

  1422. we must focus on

  1423. what Jesus

  1424. commends.

  1425. Unwavering

  1426. faithfulness to

  1427. him.

  1428. That's what he

  1429. desires from us.

  1430. That's what we need

  1431. to focus on giving.

  1432. To him.

  1433. Let's consider the

  1434. charge now in verse

  1435. 11.

  1436. Jesus says,

  1437. I am coming soon.

  1438. Hold fast what you

1439. have so that no one

  1440. may seize your crown.

  1441. There's no correction

  1442. or call to repentance

  1443. here, but there is

  1444. this urgent

  1445. exhortation.

  1446. immediately following

  1447. immediately following

  1448. Jesus' reference to his

  1449. return to judge the

  1450. earth.

  1451. He affirms that he

  1452. is coming soon,

  1453. bringing urgency to the

  1454. charge that he's about

  1455. to deliver.

  1456. And what is this

  1457. charge?

  1458. Though the church was

  1459. not guilty of the

  1460. complacency and compromise

  1461. of others,

  1462. Jesus understands that as

  1463. they await his return,

1464. both sins will only grow

  1465. in temptation.

  1466. That the longer Jesus

  1467. tarries his return,

  1468. the more tempting it

1469. will be for us to grow

  1470. spiritually cold and to

  1471. spiritually compromise.

  1472. Think about Charles

  1473. Simeon for a moment.

1474. How many of us would

1475. have made it six months,

  1476. much less 54 years?

  1477. Over time, you weary.

  1478. the persecution, the

  1479. opposition, the problems,

1480. and finally you just are

  1481. tempted to concede.

1482. And the longer you have

1483. to endure, the more the

  1484. temptation grows for you

  1485. to concede and to

  1486. compromise and to grow

  1487. cold.

1488. The same is true for

  1489. churches.

  1490. The longer Jesus tarries

  1491. his return, the larger

  1492. the temptation grows for

1493. us to be complacent, to

  1494. stop being persistent in

  1495. the things Jesus has

1496. called us to be, and it

1497. tempts us more and more

  1498. to compromise.

  1499. Out of the opposition

1500. that we face, we just

  1501. grow weary.

  1502. Jesus understands that.

1503. So he brings urgency to

  1504. this exhortation.

1505. He says, I'm coming soon.

1506. And here's what he tells

  1507. them to do.

  1508. Hold fast.

1509. Hold fast what you have.

1510. And what is it that they

  1511. have?

  1512. The gospel.

  1513. That's what they have.

  1514. Jesus simplifies what it

1515. means to prepare for his

  1516. return.

1517. By urging us to hold fast to

1518. the gospel, to keep his

1519. word, to glorify his name.

1520. You say, how are we supposed

  1521. to wait?

1522. How are we supposed to wait

  1523. with expectancy?

1524. How are we supposed to look

1525. for the return of Jesus?

1526. He tells us plainly, hold fast

  1527. to the gospel.

1528. Stay committed to the gospel

  1529. of Jesus.

  1530. Don't waver on it.

1531. Don't waver from the word.

1532. Don't grow cold in your

1533. devotion to the truth of God.

1534. Glorify his name even when

1535. it comes at great cost.

  1536. Proclaim his name.

  1537. Declare his name.

  1538. Glorify his name.

1539. Not only in the things that

1540. you say, but in the life

  1541. that you live.

  1542. In other words, persevere

  1543. without compromise.

1544. That's how we wait for the

  1545. return of Christ.

  1546. That's how we acknowledge

  1547. he's coming soon and I want

  1548. to be ready.

1549. And for those tempted to give

1550. in and give up, Jesus reminds

1551. them of the consequence here

  1552. in verse 11.

1553. That no one may seize your crown.

1554. This crown is not the royal diadem.

1555. It's the victory wreath awarded

1556. to winners of athletic events.

1557. In other words, to turn away

1558. from Jesus as a result of false

1559. teaching or fear of persecution.

1560. is the equivalent of losing

  1561. the victory.

1562. Of allowing someone to take

  1563. your crown.

  1564. Remember Jesus' word.

1565. The one who endures to the end

  1566. will be saved.

  1567. That's not a threat for Jesus

1568. to take away salvation from

1569. someone to whom it truly belongs.

1570. That's not what he means.

1571. But we do know in the scripture

1572. that those who persevere are the

  1573. true people of God.

1574. Those who fall away never were.

1575. And yet Jesus gives us these warnings

1576. over and over in the New Testament

1577. as a means of causing us to persevere.

  1578. Don't give up.

  1579. Don't turn back.

1580. The one who endures will be saved.

1581. The next time Jesus comes,

1582. it will be for judgment.

1583. And his coming is nearer than it's ever been.

  1584. So hold fast, church.

  1585. Hold fast.

  1586. Don't give up.

  1587. Don't give in.

  1588. Don't lose your crown.

1589. Let's consider the final call

  1590. and conquer formula here.

  1591. Verses 12 and 13.

  1592. Just mention it briefly.

  1593. The one who conquers,

  1594. I will make him a pillar

1595. in the temple of my God.

1596. Never shall he go out of it.

1597. I will write on him the name of my God,

1598. the name of the city of my God,

  1599. the new Jerusalem,

1600. which comes down from my God out of heaven.

1601. And my own new name.

1602. He who has an ear,

1603. let him hear what the Spirit says

  1604. to the churches.

1605. So in contrast to what will happen

1606. to those who do not hold fast to the gospel,

1607. the call and conquer formulas of this message

1608. reiterate what will be true

1609. for those who do persevere.

1610. And wasn't it that Jesus says,

  1611. this is amazing.

1612. I wish that I would have taken more time

1613. to develop this more for this morning.

1614. Jesus, the one with the key of David,

1615. will give all who conquer

1616. an honored and permanent place

  1617. in his kingdom,

1618. like a pillar in the temple.

1619. The one who has authority

1620. over who is shut in

1621. and who is shut out

1622. will never kick us out

  1623. of our heavenly home.

1624. He will put the mark of God,

  1625. the new Jerusalem,

1626. and of himself on us.

  1627. A public display

1628. that we belong to him.

1629. Now think about that for a moment.

  1630. He says,

  1631. I'm going to write

1632. the name of my God on you.

  1633. I'm going to write

1634. the name of his city on you.

1635. And I'm going to write

  1636. my name on you.

  1637. God says,

  1638. you're mine

1639. and I want everybody to know it.

  1640. For those who continue,

  1641. that's what I'm going to do.

  1642. You're mine.

  1643. In other words,

  1644. everything that the world

1645. denies us in this life

1646. will be ours beyond measure

  1647. in eternity.

1648. He who calls you is faithful,

  1649. Paul said.

1650. He will surely do it.

  1651. Take heart, church.

  1652. The promise is good.

  1653. It's true.

  1654. There is a lesson

  1655. of perseverance

  1656. in this message.

1657. There's no doubt about that.

  1658. But there's also

  1659. a necessary encouragement

  1660. from Jesus

1661. that we need to take heart.

  1662. Like the Philadelphian congregation,

  1663. Lakeside Bible Church

  1664. is of little power.

  1665. To most people,

  1666. we are weak

  1667. and insignificant.

  1668. And this will inevitably

  1669. lead to discouragement.

1670. It will lead to temptations

  1671. to quit or compromise

  1672. when facing opposition

  1673. for our gospel convictions.

  1674. Let's just be honest.

  1675. That's a reality.

  1676. That's coming.

  1677. Better not to deny

1678. that that will be the case

  1679. in our future,

  1680. but to acknowledge it

1681. and be prepared when it does.

1682. This will be a temptation

1683. we face as a church.

  1684. It won't be easy.

1685. But we need to remember

  1686. that Jesus knows

  1687. our works.

1688. He has set before us

  1689. a door

1690. that no one can shut.

1691. And we must hold fast

  1692. to the gospel.

  1693. And with Simeon

  1694. and the Philadelphian Christians,

  1695. follow Christ patiently,

  1696. for we will soon

  1697. be partakers

  1698. in His victory.

1699. He who has an ear,

  1700. let him hear

  1701. what the Spirit says

  1702. to the churches.

  1703. Let us.

  1704. Let us.
