  1. We've mentioned over the last couple of weeks how the structure of this particular book includes,

  2. if we were thinking of a musical score, there's the overture, there's the variations,

  3. which is the main section of the book, and then there's the coda,

  4. when things are kind of summarized in two major stories at the end of the book.

  5. And we're coming to the end of this introductory section, this overture,

  6. where the author is presenting to us some patterns and some ideas and some narrative

  7. that we're going to find repeated throughout the rest of the book.

  8. And when we get to this particular section, we see a more detailed narrative describing this cycle

  9. that the nation of Israel is going to continually find themselves falling into

  10. over and over and over throughout the rest of the book.

  11. We would call it the cycle of apostasy.

  12. And this pattern is, though it does vary in some places from judge to judge,

  13. it largely remains intact as we get through the book.

  14. And before we look at what that cycle is, let me just remind you what we mean when we say cycle of apostasy.

  15. We're not dealing, at least at this point, the scripture isn't dealing with a group of people

  16. who are pagan or completely outside of the knowledge of God's truth.

  17. He is addressing here God's people, those who have been set apart, at least in a national sense.

  18. He has set apart Israel to be his people at this point.

  19. They are not behaving as his spiritual people, but yet they are his covenant people in a national sense and a physical sense.

  20. That's who he's dealing with.

  21. These are people who know the truth of God.

  22. They're not ignorant of it.

  23. They're not ignorant of Yahweh.

  24. They have, in some cases, seen or at least heard the witness of their parents as they've described the wonderful works of God.

  25. They're not completely ignorant to who God is and what God's plan is.

  26. They actually know it.

  27. Apostasy is not living your life simply in rejection of biblical ideas and of the biblical God and of Christ.

  28. It is knowing those truths first and then willfully turning away from them.

  29. Does that make sense?

  30. This is different than your neighbor who's never actually heard a biblical gospel before and has no clue about the scripture.

  31. This is your neighbor who actually knows as much as anyone else knows about the scripture and about Jesus and about the gospel,

  32. and yet they still willfully turn away from that and reject it.

  33. That's where the nation of Israel is at this point.

  34. That's why we call it apostasy and not just unbelief.

  35. This is a cycle of willful unbelief from what they know to be true.

  36. They have been presented with the truth about God, and yet they continue to reject it.

  37. And so it's a specific application to us as well for those of us who at least are familiar with the truths of God.

  38. Are we actually still willfully walking away from those things?

  39. And we find ourselves in a big mess if we're like Israel in that sense.

  40. Let's just briefly talk about the cycle real quick.

  41. I think we have a graphic that I can show you that may help you.

  42. Here's how the cycle generally works, the pattern that we're going to find repeated.

  43. First, the people of Israel reject the Lord.

  44. They rebel against him and against his law.

  45. Then after that, they provoke the Lord to anger, and God delivers them into the hands of their enemies.

  46. After that, sometimes, not all the time, but sometimes the people cry out to the Lord.

  47. This is not so much a cry of repentance.

  48. It's a cry of misery.

  49. And God looks on their pain, and he looks on their misery, and then he responds.

  50. That's the next part of the cycle.

  51. God, in response, raises up a judge.

  52. And by judge, we're not talking about the skilled lawyer who sits on a big stand in a black robe and a white wig.

  53. That's not the sense of this.

  54. This is a deliverer, a military person, generally speaking, who is a savior of the people.

  55. He is a savior who leads the people out of bondage to physical national enemies at this point.

  56. So God would raise up a judge who would then deliver the people, and then the judge would die, and the people would turn right back to the rebellion.

  57. Except the rebellion is not the same as it was before.

  58. The rebellion always gets worse and worse and worse.

  59. And so the nation of Israel, throughout this book, it just continues on this repeated cycle.

  60. They rebel.

  61. God delivers them into the hands of their enemies.

  62. They are really upset about that, and they finally get to the point where they just can't take it anymore.

  63. God responds by sending them a judge, a deliverer, and then the deliverer dies, and they go right back to it again, into the rebellion.

  64. This is what we're going to see over and over and over, and the author begins to give us a glimpse of this cycle here in this particular text.

  65. But my goal today is not to dig into the cycle itself.

  66. We're going to have lots of time over the next few months to look at this cycle.

  67. That's not what I want to do today.

  68. What I want to do today is I want to look at this text and present to you some larger truths as it relates to Israel's sin and to God's response to their sin.

  69. Okay?

  70. Those are the two major things that I want you to see.

  71. I want you to see the nature of Israel's sin, and I want you to see God's response to their sin.

  72. The text teaches us so much about the true nature of our own sin, but it reveals some facets about the character of God that, in the end, should provoke our love.

  73. It should provoke our worship.

  74. That's the key here.

  75. So, if I'm going to lay it all out for you here at the beginning, what I hope will happen for you and with you by the time we get to the end of this study this morning is that you might feel some conviction if there needs to be conviction felt because of your sin.

  76. But what I really hope happens is that by the end of this, you'll have a view of God's character that will produce nothing in you except worship.

  77. Who is a God like this?

  78. There is no God like this.

  79. And that's what I hope to point out to you.

  80. Here's the first thing that I want you to see if you're keeping notes.

  81. I want you to see the root of Israel's apostasy.

  82. The root of Israel's apostasy.

  83. Look with me again at verse 11.

  84. The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals.

  85. And they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt.

  86. They went after other gods from among the gods of the peoples who are around them and bowed down to them.

  87. And they provoked the Lord to anger.

  88. They abandoned the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth.

  89. Now, do you remember over the summer we had that series through the seven churches in Revelation?

  90. And does anybody remember what the literary structure was of those seven churches?

  91. Do you remember what it was called?

  92. Anybody remember?

  93. Josh, tell us.

  94. It's a chiasm, right?

  95. A chiastic structure.

  96. A chiasm is basically, it's a literary technique that has a particular movement or series of movements or statements that are meant to convey a central idea.

  97. Okay?

  98. There's a narrowing and broadening function.

  99. So, if you remember back in that particular study, chi is a Greek letter.

  100. It looks like a capital X in English.

  101. And so, if you kind of think of this half of the X, the way that a structure like this works in literary terms is it starts broadly.

  102. It moves in, narrows in to its central focus, and then it works itself back out.

  103. And it mimics where it starts.

  104. Okay?

  105. Now, I want you to see what's happening here in this text in verses 11 through 13 is a chiasm.

  106. It's another chiastic structure.

  107. And I just want you to look at it with me.

  108. I think I have it on the screen for you to see, actually, so you can visualize this.

  109. In verse 11, we have Israel served the bells.

  110. In verse 12, they abandoned the Lord.

  111. Again, in verse 12, this is the central focus.

  112. They went after other gods and bowed down to them.

  113. And now it begins to work its way back out.

  114. They, in verse 13, abandoned the Lord.

  115. Verse 13, they served the bells and the astros.

  116. Do you see the narrowing effect?

  117. How it starts out and it narrows?

  118. Now, what the author's doing here, this is very common, especially in the Old Testament literature.

  119. This is very common.

  120. He's taking a series of statements or a series of thoughts, and he's arranging them in order that we might see what is at the heart of this issue.

  121. And what is at the heart of this issue with Israel, in verse 12, right in the middle, is that they went after other gods and they bowed down to them.

  122. And what is that?

  123. It's worship.

  124. At the heart of Israel's apostasy was the issue of worship.

  125. Worship.

  126. In fact, the word behind this phrase, bowed down, is used in the scriptures to indicate the biblical notion of worship.

  127. We don't always understand it that way.

  128. We don't always use that term that way.

  129. Typically, when we use the term worship, we are referring to the process of singing praises to God, right?

  130. We would come and churches will have worship teams, and what the worship teams are is just the singers, right?

  131. Because we say, well, let's stand and let's worship together.

  132. What we really mean is let's sing together.

  133. Typically, we have a very narrow view of what worship is.

  134. But the biblical notion of worship is actually much different than that.

  135. Indeed, exaltation is really what we mean when we say worship in that other sense.

  136. But an exaltation is a crucial element to expressing worship.

  137. But it's still only one piece of the pie, okay?

  138. The biblical idea of worship is generally actually quite different than jubilation.

  139. The word itself, it pictures a royal courtroom.

  140. The king is on his throne, and his subjects have come in to give homage to him.

  141. And what they do is they bow down low.

  142. That's why it's often translated bow down.

  143. Or when we say worship, the word behind it in the Old Testament, it really means to bow low.

  144. But we're not just talking about getting on our hands and knees.

  145. When we think about bowing in worship, that's what we think, right?

  146. We think we get down on our hands and knees, and we plead with someone,

  147. will you please marry me?

  148. There's a reason we get on our knees.

  149. Because we have to beg for women to do that, right?

  150. It goes further than that.

  151. This word, the picture here, it is to lay prostrate on the ground.

  152. It's to get as close to the ground as you can possibly get.

  153. Julie's going to get mad at me for doing this.

  154. My clothes are going to get dirty.

  155. It's to lay down.

  156. It's to lay down, hands forward.

  157. You're as low as you can possibly get to the ground.

  158. Now, why would someone do this as a form of worship?

  159. They're making themselves as low as they can possibly make themselves,

  160. in order that the one who is the object of their worship

  161. is lifted as high as that person can be lifted up.

  162. It's a sign of worth, of value.

  163. I'm expressing so much value to this person or to this thing

  164. that I am bringing myself low in submission as far as I can go.

  165. And here's the idea of what it expresses.

  166. It's a statement.

  167. It says that I am submitting all of my love and my loyalty and my service.

  168. I'm committing to this object or this idea or this person or whatever it may be.

  169. It's what it means to bow down here in this text.

  170. Now, this is what the author intends for us to understand.

  171. It's what he's communicating when he says that Israel bowed down to the bells

  172. and to the Ashtoreth.

  173. Not only physically, but spiritually,

  174. they were pledging all of their loyalty and service

  175. to Baal, the Canaanite god,

  176. rather than to Yahweh, the god of the Hebrews.

  177. That's what's at the core of their evil.

  178. Their worship was wrong.

  179. Their loyalty was wrong.

  180. The one they were surrendered to was no longer Yahweh.

  181. The one they're surrendered to now is the god of the culture in which they lived.

  182. And of course, the act of worshiping the gods of Canaan

  183. were very different than worshiping Yahweh.

  184. Baal was the Canaanite god of storms and fertility.

  185. The worshipers in Canaanite theology stated that

  186. the rain that was necessary for the ground to be watered and fertile

  187. and fruitful in its bearing of crops

  188. would only come if Baal and Ashtart or the Ashtoreth,

  189. which in their theology was Baal's female consort

  190. or his queen perhaps if you want to think of it that way.

  191. The only way that the ground would be fertile

  192. and that the rain would come

  193. and that the fruitful crops would come

  194. is if they too copulated together.

  195. But this couldn't just happen because it happens.

  196. They had to be coerced into doing that,

  197. which meant that the worshipers had to coerce them.

  198. And the way that Canaanite theology taught this

  199. is that the only way to coerce Baal and Ashtoreth

  200. to have this intercourse together

  201. is if humans had intercourse together

  202. in a public way as a form of worship.

  203. So they created these cult prostitutes

  204. that would make themselves available

  205. in places of worship of Baal

  206. and individuals could go

  207. and they could engage with these cult prostitutes

  208. in order to hopefully coerce Baal and Ashtoreth

  209. into doing the same thing.

  210. And that if they would do that,

  211. then the rain would come

  212. and then the ground would be fertile

  213. and then the fruitfulness of the crops would come.

  214. And this eventually evolved

  215. into all kinds of other immoral practices,

  216. including eventually,

  217. probably the worst of it would have been

  218. sacrificing their children

  219. to appease these gods.

  220. You see, the fundamental difference here

  221. between pagan gods and Hebrew worship

  222. was that pagan gods had to be coerced.

  223. Yahweh just says,

  224. trust me,

  225. believe me,

  226. follow me.

  227. Pagan gods have to be coerced

  228. because they don't actually want to help you.

  229. They're not interested in helping you.

  230. That's not the picture of pagan theology that we find.

  231. They have to be coerced.

  232. You have to do all these other things.

  233. You have to sacrifice your own children

  234. just to try to plead with them

  235. to come on your behalf.

  236. But God says,

  237. no, trust me.

  238. Yahweh is simply to be trusted.

  239. But instead of trusting the promises of God,

  240. Israel abandoned him

  241. to pursue the gods of the land.

  242. Their worship then

  243. was not motivated by truth.

  244. It wasn't motivated by righteousness.

  245. It wasn't motivated by love.

  246. Their worship was motivated by the flesh.

  247. Israel was seduced by what they thought

  248. would secure them happiness and wealth.

  249. They didn't abandon Yahweh

  250. because he had somehow failed them,

  251. but because they thought

  252. that what Baal offered

  253. was so much better.

  254. The worship that came along

  255. with worshiping Baal and Ashtar,

  256. the promises of the fertility of the ground,

  257. all of those things,

  258. they found that to be far more desirable.

  259. So they didn't leave Yahweh

  260. because he was bad to them

  261. or that he had harmed them in any way.

  262. He had been only good to them.

  263. They left because they found

  264. some other God to be more desirable.

  265. Canaanite religion appeals then

  266. to man's basest desires of the flesh.

  267. Pleasure and prosperity.

  268. Pleasure and prosperity.

  269. And such is true

  270. about the modern equivalence

  271. of Baal worship.

  272. The gods of this world

  273. and of our culture

  274. and the ideas of it,

  275. they do not appeal to us

  276. on the basis of truth

  277. and righteousness

  278. and eternal purpose.

  279. They seduce us

  280. with promises of prosperity

  281. that never live up

  282. to the expectations

  283. that we have for it.

  284. And they seduce us

  285. with promises of pleasure

  286. that are ultimately fleeting.

  287. They're here for a moment

  288. and then they're gone.

  289. And then you're left alone

  290. trying to pursue

  291. that same pleasure

  292. all over again.

  293. But what God offers us

  294. is so much greater

  295. than sex and wealth.

  296. It's far different than that.

  297. He promises us

  298. truth,

  299. peace,

  300. not merely peace among ourselves,

  301. peace with Him.

  302. He promises us

  303. incomprehensible joy

  304. that will never come

  305. to an end.

  306. But like Israel,

  307. we regularly settle

  308. for less

  309. than what God actually offers.

  310. It's a bad trade.

  311. Here's what C.S. Lewis

  312. had to say about that.

  313. It would seem

  314. that our Lord

  315. finds our desires

  316. not to be too strong

  317. but to be too weak.

  318. We are half-hearted creatures

  319. fooling about

  320. with drink

  321. and sex

  322. and ambition

  323. when infinite joy

  324. is offered to us.

  325. Like an ignorant child

  326. who wants to go on

  327. making mud pies

  328. in a slum

  329. because he cannot imagine

  330. what is meant

  331. by the offer

  332. of a holiday at sea.

  333. We are far too easily

  334. pleased,

  335. he says.

  336. I find that really helpful.

  337. Sometimes we think

  338. that our sin

  339. is the result

  340. of strong urges

  341. that are in us

  342. but it's actually

  343. weak urges.

  344. We are not looking

  345. at the truth

  346. of what it is

  347. that God offers us

  348. and what Christ offers us

  349. in the gospel.

  350. We're looking for something

  351. that's far less than that.

  352. Something that's

  353. immediately gratifying to us

  354. or something that

  355. brings pleasure

  356. however it may be

  357. fleeting to us

  358. and at least pleasures us

  359. in that particular moment

  360. or it comes with

  361. the promise of prosperity

  362. or at least what we hope

  363. will end up being

  364. prosperity.

  365. prosperity

  366. and we've actually

  367. set our sights

  368. and our desires

  369. far too low.

  370. The fact is

  371. that we all

  372. worship something.

  373. The question is

  374. what is the nature

  375. of that worship?

  376. Are you submitted

  377. to the God

  378. who offers life

  379. and peace

  380. or are you

  381. bowing before

  382. the God of self

  383. fiddling around

  384. with anything

  385. that might fulfill

  386. your basest lust?

  387. You see here's the thing

  388. this is what we saw

  389. in James chapter 4

    James 4 chapter mention

  390. as well.

  391. You can't have it

  392. both ways.

  393. That's the problem.

  394. We try to.

  395. Those of us

  396. who are Christians

  397. from time to time

  398. we try to bring

  399. these two things together

  400. as much as we can

  401. and it just doesn't work.

  402. Jesus tells us

  403. that plainly.

  404. He says you can't

  405. serve two masters

  406. because you're either

  407. going to love the one

  408. and hate the other

  409. or you're going to

  410. hate the one

  411. and love the other.

  412. You can't serve God

  413. and mammon

  414. or money

  415. was the context

  416. of what he was saying

  417. but the sense was

  418. you can't serve God

  419. and this world.

  420. In another place

  421. he says that

  422. the path to prosperity

  423. and pleasure

  424. and joy

  425. and all of these things

  426. life that we have

  427. is not a path

  428. of self-fulfillment

  429. it's actually a path

  430. of self-denial.

  431. Deny yourself.

  432. Take up your cross.

  433. Follow me.

  434. Because whoever

  435. will save his life

  436. will lose it

  437. but whoever loses

  438. his life for my sake

  439. in the gospels

  440. he will save it.

  441. It's upside down

  442. isn't it?

  443. It's backwards

  444. but only for us.

  445. It's the true way

  446. of righteousness.

  447. It's the true way

  448. of salvation.

  449. It's the true way

  450. of true joy

  451. and peace

  452. and lasting hope.

  453. And then of course

  454. we must remember

  455. that it's entirely possible

  456. to identify

  457. with Christianity

  458. in some sense

  459. while not actually

  460. worshiping

  461. the Christian God.

  462. isn't that where

  463. Israel is?

  464. They weren't

  465. renouncing their identity

  466. as Israelites.

  467. They probably

  468. didn't even put away

  469. everything that

  470. was recorded

  471. for them to do

  472. as far as the law

  473. was concerned.

  474. There was probably

  475. some syncretistic

  476. tendencies that they had

  477. where they would

  478. still maybe do

  479. some of the Yahweh things

  480. but they were also

  481. going to do the

  482. Baal things as well

  483. and there was this

  484. kind of mixture

  485. they're trying to

  486. bring together.

  487. They were trying to

  488. have it both ways

  489. but it doesn't work.

  490. It doesn't work

  491. for us either.

  492. You can try

  493. to identify

  494. as a Christian

  495. but if you're not

  496. worshiping the true God

  497. you're not

  498. worshiping Christ

  499. I don't know

  500. what you mean

  501. when you say

  502. that you're a Christian.

  503. Israel's apostasy

  504. was a matter of worship

  505. so was ours.

  506. Second thing

  507. I want you to see

  508. the wonder

  509. of the holy God.

  510. The wonder

  511. of the holy God.

  512. So there's the heart

  513. or the root

  514. of Israel's apostasy

  515. it's an issue

  516. of worship here

  517. they're serving Baal

  518. rather than serving God

  519. but now I just want you

  520. to look at God.

  521. All throughout the scripture

  522. we find people

  523. standing in awe

  524. and wonder

  525. over the glory

  526. of God.

  527. Let me just give you

  528. a few examples

  529. of that.

  530. Moses in Exodus

    Exodus 15 chapter mention

  531. chapter 15 says

  532. who is like you

  533. oh Lord

  534. among the gods?

  535. Who is like you

  536. majestic in holiness

  537. awesome and glorious

  538. deeds

  539. doing wonders?

  540. How many times

  541. do your prayers

  542. sound like that?

  543. I wish I could speak

  544. the language of Moses

  545. and David

  546. and some of these guys.

  547. How many times

  548. have you fallen

  549. on your knees

  550. in prayer

  551. and private worship

  552. just because you got

  553. a glimpse

  554. of some unique

  555. characteristic

  556. of God's nature

  557. and you just say

  558. who is a God

  559. like you?

  560. There is nobody

  561. like you

  562. majestic in your holiness.

  563. But it wasn't

  564. just Moses

  565. Solomon said it

  566. in 1 Kings 8

  567. oh Lord

  568. God of Israel

  569. there is no God

  570. like you

  571. in heaven above

  572. or earth beneath

  573. keeping covenant

  574. showing steadfast love

  575. to your servants

  576. who walk before you

  577. with all their heart.

  578. Micah said it

  579. who is a God

  580. like you

  581. pardoning iniquity

  582. and passing over

  583. transgression

  584. for the remnant

  585. of his inheritance?

  586. He does not

  587. retain his anger

  588. forever because

  589. he delights

  590. in steadfast love.

  591. Paul said it

  592. in Romans 11

  593. oh the depth

  594. of the riches

  595. and the wisdom

  596. and the knowledge

  597. of God

  598. how unsearchable

  599. are his judgments

  600. how inscrutable

  601. his ways.

  602. Over and over

  603. when you get a glimpse

  604. of who God is

  605. even if it's just

  606. a small one

  607. what it's going to

  608. produce in your life

  609. is worship.

  610. Who is a God

  611. like you?

  612. And how do we

  613. get to that?

  614. How do we get

  615. to that point?

  616. What is it that

  617. these people saw

  618. and understood

  619. that produced

  620. this kind of worship?

  621. Nothing produces

  622. this reaction more

  623. I think

  624. than seeing

  625. God's righteous

  626. anger

  627. and his

  628. infinite mercy

  629. presented alongside

  630. one another

  631. and that's what

  632. we have in this

  633. text right here.

  634. The subject

  635. of these verses

  636. verses 14 and 15

  637. the subject

  638. is God

  639. not Israel

  640. and what is

  641. conveyed about

  642. God's character

  643. should move us

  644. to worship

  645. and there's two

  646. facets here

  647. that the author

  648. points out.

  649. The first thing

  650. I want you to

  651. see is the

  652. anger of the

  653. Lord.

  654. The anger

  655. of the Lord.

  656. Verse 14

  657. So the anger

  658. of the Lord

  659. was kindled

  660. against Israel

  661. and he gave

  662. them over

  663. to plunderers

  664. who plundered

  665. them.

  666. He sold

  667. them into

  668. the hand

  669. of their

  670. surrounding

  671. enemies

  672. so that

  673. they could

  674. no longer

  675. withstand

  676. their enemies.

  677. Whenever

  678. they marched

  679. out the

  680. hand of the

  681. Lord

  682. was against

  683. them for

  684. harm

  685. as the

  686. Lord had

  687. warned

  688. and as the

  689. Lord had

  690. sworn to

  691. them

  692. and they

  693. were in

  694. terrible

  695. distress.

  696. By

  697. abandoning

  698. Yahweh

  699. to serve

  700. the

  701. bells

  702. Israel

  703. provoked

  704. the Lord's

  705. anger

  706. and the

  707. consequences

  708. were

  709. calculated

  710. and severe.

  711. Notice

  712. how intent

  713. the author

  714. is on

  715. emphasizing

  716. God's

  717. action

  718. in this.

  719. It was

  720. the Lord

  721. who quote

  722. gave them

  723. over

  724. to

  725. plunderers.

  726. It was

  727. God

  728. who sold

  729. them

  730. to their

  731. enemies.

  732. God's

  733. hand

  734. had not

  735. merely

  736. been

  737. removed

  738. from

  739. them

  740. for

  741. good

  742. but

  743. it

  744. was

  745. quote

  746. against

  747. them

  748. for

  749. harm.

  750. All

  751. of this

  752. divine

  753. action

  754. resulted

  755. in the

  756. people

  757. of

  758. Israel

  759. being

  760. in

  761. quote

  762. terrible

  763. distress.

  764. They

  765. pursued

  766. Baal

  767. hoping

  768. to receive

  769. pleasure

  770. and

  771. prosperity

  772. and

  773. protection

  774. but all

  775. they got

  776. was the

  777. wrath

  778. of

  779. God.

  780. God

  781. the

  782. same

  783. will

  784. be

  785. true

  786. for

  787. us.

  788. Sin

  789. never

  790. follows

  791. through

  792. on

  793. what

  794. it

  795. offers.

  796. We

  797. can

  798. pursue

  799. it.

  800. We

  801. can

  802. pursue

  803. sin.

  804. We

  805. can

  806. pursue

  807. anything

  808. that

  809. may

  810. line

  811. up

  812. in

  813. rejection

  814. to

  815. the

  816. truth

  817. of

  818. the

  819. gospel

  820. of

  821. Jesus

  822. and

  823. we're

  824. going

  825. to

  826. think

  827. it's

  828. going

  829. to

  830. make

  831. things

  832. better

  833. for

  834. us.

  835. Things

  836. are

  837. going

  838. to

  839. be

  840. more

  841. freeing.

  842. We're

  843. going

  844. to

  845. be

  846. happy.

  847. We're

  848. going

  849. to

  850. God.

  851. And I

  852. think the

  853. author is

  854. intent for

  855. us to

  856. see that

  857. God is

  858. a

  859. wrathful

  860. God.

  861. But we

  862. don't like

  863. to think

  864. of that.

  865. Our

  866. culture is

  867. so opposed

  868. to

  869. authority

  870. and

  871. punitive

  872. action

  873. that we

  874. often as

  875. Christians

  876. we feel

  877. like we

  878. have to

  879. get God

  880. off the

  881. hook

  882. for

  883. bad

  884. things

  885. that

  886. happen

  887. or we

  888. got to

  889. get God

  890. off the

  891. hook

  892. for

  893. things

  894. that

  895. come

  896. as

  897. the

  898. consequences

  899. of

  900. our

  901. sin.

  902. We

  903. don't

  904. like

  905. to

  906. talk

  907. about

  908. God's

  909. wrath

  910. so we

  911. water

  912. down

  913. biblical

  914. language

  915. hoping

  916. to

  917. make

  918. it

  919. more

  920. palatable.

  921. We

  922. emphasize

  923. God's

  924. love

  925. rightly

  926. but we

  927. emphasize

  928. it

  929. sometimes

  930. in such

  931. a way

  932. that

  933. to think

  934. that

  935. God

  936. judges

  937. sinners

  938. or that

  939. God

  940. has

  941. any

  942. kind

  943. of

  944. wrath

  945. or

  946. anger

  947. to

  948. people

  949. seems

  950. unthinkable.

  951. Well I

  952. thought

  953. he

  954. was a

  955. God

  956. of

  957. love.

  958. We

  959. emphasize

  960. his

  961. love

  962. so

  963. much

  964. that

  965. we

  966. end

  967. up

  968. diminishing

  969. a

  970. anger

  971. with

  972. sin.

  973. We

  974. say

  975. things

  976. like

  977. God

  978. doesn't

  979. send

  980. people

  981. to

  982. hell

  983. they

  984. choose

  985. to

  986. go

  987. there

  988. which

  989. is

  990. not

  991. true.

  992. We

  993. do

  994. everything

  995. we

  996. can

  997. to

  998. get

  999. God

  1000. off

  1001. the

  1002. hook.

  1003. We

  1004. do

  1005. everything

  1006. we

  1007. can

  1008. to

  1009. soften

  1010. thoughts

  1011. of

  1012. this

  1013. but

  1014. the

  1015. fact

  1016. is

  1017. that

  1018. God

  1019. is

  1020. perfectly

  1021. holy.

  1022. He

  1023. is

  1024. just

  1025. and

  1026. everyone

  1027. who

  1028. rejects

  1029. him

  1030. as

  1031. Israel

  1032. did

  1033. become

  1034. his

  1035. enemies

  1036. and

  1037. they

  1038. face

  1039. his

  1040. divine

  1041. wrath.

  1042. Think

  1043. of

  1044. Hebrews

  1045. 10.

  1046. For

  1047. we

  1048. know

  1049. him

  1050. who

  1051. said

  1052. vengeance

  1053. is

  1054. mine

  1055. I

  1056. will

  1057. repay

  1058. and

  1059. again

  1060. the

  1061. Lord

  1062. will

  1063. judge

  1064. his

  1065. people.

  1066. And

  1067. then

  1068. the

  1069. author

  1070. of

  1071. Hebrews

  1072. summarizes

  1073. it

  1074. this

  1075. way.

  1076. It

  1077. is

  1078. a

  1079. fearful

  1080. thing

  1081. to

  1082. fall

  1083. into

  1084. the

  1085. hands

  1086. of

  1087. the

  1088. living

  1089. God.

  1090. It

  1091. is

  1092. a

  1093. fearful

  1094. thing.

  1095. And

  1096. it's

  1097. the

  1098. reality

  1099. for

  1100. anyone

  1101. who

  1102. does

  1103. not

  1104. belong

  1105. to

  1106. him

  1107. through

  1108. faith

  1109. in

  1110. Christ.

  1111. But

  1112. his

  1113. wrath,

  1114. his

  1115. holiness,

  1116. his

  1117. justice

  1118. is

  1119. something

  1120. to

  1121. be

  1122. worshipped.

  1123. That's

  1124. why we

  1125. must

  1126. not

  1127. diminish

  1128. it.

  1129. For

  1130. him

  1131. to

  1132. be

  1133. anything

  1134. less

  1135. than

  1136. just

  1137. would

  1138. mean

  1139. that

  1140. he

  1141. is

  1142. not

  1143. a

  1144. good

  1145. God.

  1146. He

  1147. must

  1148. judge

  1149. sin.

  1150. And

  1151. we

  1152. must

  1153. not

  1154. view

  1155. God's

  1156. wrath

  1157. as

  1158. an

  1159. uncontrolled

  1160. !

  1161. temper.

  1162. That's

  1163. how we

  1164. think

  1165. about

  1166. that

  1167. term

  1168. because

  1169. that's

  1170. how

  1171. we

  1172. respond

  1173. in

  1174. wrath.

  1175. We

  1176. respond

  1177. as if

  1178. we're

  1179. sinful

  1180. things

  1181. in

  1182. the

  1183. midst

  1184. of

  1185. our

  1186. anger

  1187. and

  1188. our

  1189. wrath

  1190. but

  1191. that's

  1192. not

  1193. what

  1194. we're

  1195. to

  1196. understand

  1197. about

  1198. God's

  1199. wrath.

  1200. Think

  1201. about

  1202. it

  1203. here.

  1204. The

  1205. author

  1206. reminds

  1207. us

  1208. here

  1209. in

  1210. verse

  1211. 15

  1212. that

  1213. God's

  1214. anger

  1215. was

  1216. in

  1217. faithfulness

  1218. to

  1219. his

  1220. word.

  1221. Look

  1222. at

  1223. it

  1224. with

  1225. me

  1226. verse

  1227. 15.

  1228. Whenever

  1229. they

  1230. marched

  1231. out

  1232. the

  1233. hand

  1234. of

  1235. the

  1236. Lord

  1237. was

  1238. against

  1239. them

  1240. for

  1241. harm

  1242. as

  1243. the

  1244. Lord

  1245. had

  1246. warned

  1247. he

  1248. told

  1249. them

  1250. long

  1251. before

  1252. Joshua

  1253. 24

  1254. he

  1255. said

  1256. if

  1257. you

  1258. do

  1259. not

  1260. obey

  1261. if

  1262. you

  1263. do

  1264. not

  1265. worship

  1266. me

  1267. if

  1268. you

  1269. do

  1270. all

  1271. of

  1272. these

  1273. other

  1274. things

  1275. my

  1276. hand

  1277. will

  1278. be

  1279. against

  1280. you

  1281. I

  1282. will

  1283. not

  1284. bless

  1285. you

  1286. in

  1287. the

  1288. land

  1289. I

  1290. must

  1291. judge

  1292. your

  1293. sin

  1294. he's

  1295. just

  1296. acting

  1297. in

  1298. faithfulness

  1299. he

  1300. plainly

  1301. told

  1302. them

  1303. that

  1304. turning

  1305. to

  1306. the

  1307. gods

  1308. of

  1309. Canaan

  1310. would

  1311. result

  1312. in

  1313. this

  1314. divine

  1315. !

  1316. wrath

  1317. I

  1318. like

  1319. how

  1320. Barry

  1321. Webb

  1322. puts

  1323. it

  1324. God

  1325. had

  1326. shown

  1327. himself

  1328. to be

  1329. true

  1330. to

  1331. his

  1332. word

  1333. by

  1334. fulfilling

  1335. the

  1336. promises

  1337. he

  1338. had

  1339. made

  1340. to

  1341. his

  1342. people

  1343. and

  1344. he

  1345. would

  1346. also

  1347. be

  1348. true

  1349. to

  1350. his

  1351. word

  1352. in

  1353. fulfilling

  1354. the

  1355. warnings

  1356. he

  1357. had

  1358. given

  1359. them

  1360. there's

  1361. nothing

  1362. capricious

  1363. about

  1364. that

  1365. he

  1366. says

  1367. the

  1368. God

  1369. of

  1370. the

  1371. Bible

  1372. gets

  1373. angry

  1374. but

  1375. he

  1376. does

  1377. not

  1378. throw

  1379. tantrums

  1380. that's

  1381. a

  1382. significant

  1383. difference

  1384. his

  1385. anger

  1386. is

  1387. righteous

  1388. anger

  1389. holy

  1390. anger

  1391. it's

  1392. just

  1393. I

  1394. think

  1395. that's

  1396. the

  1397. first

  1398. thing

  1399. the

  1400. author

  1401. wants

  1402. us

  1403. to

  1404. see

  1405. here

  1406. as

  1407. we're

  1408. examining

  1409. the

  1410. character

  1411. of

  1412. God

  1413. we have

  1414. the

  1415. anger

  1416. of

  1417. the

  1418. Lord

  1419. but

  1420. then

  1421. it

  1422. gets

  1423. better

  1424. now

  1425. we

  1426. have

  1427. the

  1428. mercy

  1429. of

  1430. the

  1431. Lord

  1432. mercy

  1433. of

  1434. the

  1435. Lord

  1436. verse

  1437. 16

  1438. then

  1439. the

  1440. Lord

  1441. raised

  1442. up

  1443. judges

  1444. who

  1445. saved

  1446. them

  1447. out

  1448. of

  1449. the

  1450. hand

  1451. of

  1452. those

  1453. who

  1454. plundered

  1455. them

  1456. verse

  1457. 18

  1458. whenever

  1459. the

  1460. Lord

  1461. raised

  1462. now

  1463. remember

  1464. what

  1465. we're

  1466. doing

  1467. we've

  1468. seen

  1469. Israel

  1470. sin

  1471. we've

  1472. seen

  1473. the

  1474. root

  1475. of

  1476. it

  1477. it's

  1478. an

  1479. issue

  1480. of

  1481. worship

  1482. now

  1483. we're

  1484. taking

  1485. our

  1486. eyes

  1487. off

  1488. of

  1489. Israel

  1490. for

  1491. a

  1492. moment

  1493. and

  1494. we're

  1495. looking

  1496. at

  1497. the

  1498. God

  1499. that

  1500. they

  1501. should

  1502. have

  1503. been

  1504. worshiping

  1505. what

  1506. is

  1507. he

  1508. like

  1509. well

  1510. on

  1511. one

  1512. hand

  1513. we

  1514. have

  1515. to

  1516. acknowledge

  1517. in

  1518. the

  1519. context

  1520. of

  1521. their

  1522. sin

  1523. and

  1524. unfaithfulness

  1525. he

  1526. is

  1527. a

  1528. wrathful

  1529. God

  1530. there's

  1531. the

  1532. we

  1533. can't

  1534. take

  1535. that

  1536. away

  1537. from

  1538. God

  1539. that's

  1540. who

  1541. he

  1542. is

  1543. but

  1544. on

  1545. the

  1546. other

  1547. hand

  1548. because

  1549. of

  1550. the

  1551. backdrop

  1552. of

  1553. his

  1554. anger

  1555. we

  1556. see

  1557. his

  1558. infinite

  1559. mercy

  1560. that's

  1561. the

  1562. real

  1563. wonder

  1564. here

  1565. is

  1566. his

  1567. divine

  1568. mercy

  1569. we

  1570. can

  1571. easily

  1572. comprehend

  1573. a

  1574. God

  1575. who

  1576. punishes

  1577. disobedience

  1578. that's

  1579. easy

  1580. to do

  1581. right

  1582. easy

  1583. we

  1584. can

  1585. only

  1586. marvel

  1587. at a

  1588. God

  1589. who

  1590. shows

  1591. mercy

  1592. for

  1593. no

  1594. apparent

  1595. reason

  1596. no

  1597. apparent

  1598. reason

  1599. at all

  1600. is

  1601. given

  1602. here

  1603. that's

  1604. exactly

  1605. what's

  1606. on

  1607. display

  1608. in

  1609. this

  1610. chapter

  1611. the

  1612. one

  1613. who

  1614. sold

  1615. them

  1616. into

  1617. the

  1618. hands

  1619. of

  1620. plunderers

  1621. is

  1622. also

  1623. the

  1624. one

  1625. responsible

  1626. for

  1627. saving

  1628. them

  1629. from

  1630. those

  1631. plunderers

  1632. the

  1633. hand

  1634. that

  1635. was

  1636. against

  1637. them

  1638. is

  1639. simultaneously

  1640. for

  1641. them

  1642. indeed

  1643. part

  1644. of

  1645. the

  1646. reason

  1647. for

  1648. God's

  1649. wrath

  1650. is

  1651. to

  1652. provide

  1653. a

  1654. context

  1655. for

  1656. which

  1657. we

  1658. are

  1659. to

  1660. understand

  1661. his

  1662. mercy

  1663. I told

  1664. you in

  1665. the

  1666. introductory

  1667. lesson

  1668. one of

  1669. the

  1670. themes

  1671. of

  1672. this

  1673. is

  1674. to

  1675. understand

  1676. a

  1677. theme

  1678. of

  1679. the

  1680. entire

  1681. Bible

  1682. which

  1683. is

  1684. that

  1685. God's

  1686. glory

  1687. he

  1688. is

  1689. glorified

  1690. in

  1691. salvation

  1692. through

  1693. judgment

  1694. you can't

  1695. understand

  1696. salvation

  1697. without

  1698. understanding

  1699. judgment

  1700. and we

  1701. find it

  1702. clearly

  1703. here

  1704. his

  1705. anger

  1706. and his

  1707. wrath

  1708. and his

  1709. judgment

  1710. being poured

  1711. out

  1712. on his

  1713. people

  1714. while at

  1715. the

  1716. same

  1717. time

  1718. he

  1719. is

  1720. emphasizing

  1721. and

  1722. highlighting

  1723. his

  1724. loving

  1725. compassion

  1726. in salvation

  1727. for his

  1728. people

  1729. and what's

  1730. more

  1731. is that

  1732. God's

  1733. mercy

  1734. here

  1735. is based

  1736. on nothing

  1737. but his

  1738. own

  1739. compassion

  1740. notice

  1741. with me

  1742. the author

  1743. conspicuously

  1744. leaves out

  1745. anything

  1746. on Israel's

  1747. part

  1748. that might

  1749. be construed

  1750. as deserving

  1751. or earning

  1752. God's mercy

  1753. it's not

  1754. there

  1755. even

  1756. later

  1757. on

  1758. in some

  1759. of the

  1760. cycles

  1761. of the

  1762. judges

  1763. when we're

  1764. told that

  1765. they cry

  1766. out to

  1767. the Lord

  1768. it's always

  1769. a signal

  1770. of their

  1771. misery

  1772. not of

  1773. their

  1774. repentance

  1775. which is

  1776. why the

  1777. author says

  1778. right here

  1779. in this

  1780. passage

  1781. that every

  1782. time

  1783. they did

  1784. not give

  1785. up their

  1786. stubborn

  1787. ways

  1788. they not

  1789. only continued

  1790. in them

  1791. but they

  1792. worsened

  1793. in them

  1794. there's

  1795. nothing

  1796. Israel is

  1797. doing

  1798. that might

  1799. make a

  1800. step back

  1801. and say

  1802. that's

  1803. why God

  1804. was merciful

  1805. to them

  1806. the only

  1807. reason

  1808. given

  1809. is given

  1810. in verse

  1811. 18

  1812. and notice

  1813. what it

  1814. says

  1815. at the

  1816. end of

  1817. verse

  1818. 18

  1819. for

  1820. the

  1821. Lord

  1822. was

  1823. moved

  1824. to

  1825. pity

  1826. by

  1827. their

  1828. groaning

  1829. because of

  1830. those who

  1831. afflicted

  1832. and oppressed

  1833. them

  1834. what is

  1835. moving

  1836. and motivating

  1837. God's

  1838. intervention

  1839. not their

  1840. cries

  1841. not their

  1842. earnest

  1843. attempts

  1844. at

  1845. satisfying

  1846. him

  1847. according

  1848. to the

  1849. law

  1850. simply

  1851. their

  1852. distress

  1853. the

  1854. fact

  1855. that

  1856. they

  1857. were

  1858. in

  1859. distress

  1860. motivated

  1861. his

  1862. mercy

  1863. a

  1864. statement

  1865. of

  1866. his

  1867. measureless

  1868. love

  1869. and

  1870. compassion

  1871. says

  1872. Dale

  1873. Ralph

  1874. Davis

  1875. here

  1876. is the

  1877. fundamental

  1878. miracle

  1879. of the

  1880. Bible

  1881. that

  1882. the

  1883. God

  1884. who

  1885. rightly

  1886. cast

  1887. us

  1888. down

  1889. to

  1890. the

  1891. ground

  1892. should

  1893. without

  1894. reasons

  1895. stoop

  1896. to lift

  1897. us

  1898. up

  1899. you see

  1900. we can

  1901. step

  1902. back

  1903. if all

  1904. we see

  1905. is the

  1906. anger

  1907. of the

  1908. Lord

  1909. we can

  1910. step

  1911. back

  1912. and say

  1913. okay

  1914. that's

  1915. like

  1916. every

  1917. other

  1918. God

  1919. I've

  1920. ever

  1921. read

  1922. about

  1923. angry

  1924. at

  1925. us

  1926. we

  1927. have

  1928. to

  1929. appease

  1930. them

  1931. but

  1932. then

  1933. when we

  1934. see

  1935. this

  1936. we

  1937. find

  1938. now

  1939. there

  1940. is

  1941. no

  1942. God

  1943. like

  1944. that

  1945. there

  1946. is

  1947. no

  1948. !

  1949. person

  1950. like

  1951. that

  1952. who

  1953. in

  1954. perfect

  1955. justice

  1956. delivers

  1957. them

  1958. to

  1959. their

  1960. enemies

  1961. so

  1962. that

  1963. he

  1964. might

  1965. then

  1966. save

  1967. them

  1968. from

  1969. their

  1970. enemies

  1971. out of

  1972. his

  1973. pure

  1974. love

  1975. and

  1976. compassion

  1977. does this

  1978. make you

  1979. think

  1980. of

  1981. anything

  1982. it

  1983. should

  1984. all

  1985. of

  1986. this

  1987. you know

  1988. what

  1989. it

  1990. does

  1991. it

  1992. points

  1993. us

  1994. forward

  1995. points

  1996. us

  1997. to

  1998. Jesus

  1999. the

  2000. way

  2001. that

  2002. God's

  2003. character

  2004. is

  2005. displayed

  2006. here

  2007. prepares

  2008. us

  2009. for

  2010. a

  2011. true

  2012. and

  2013. better

  2014. savior

  2015. who

  2016. would

  2017. deliver

  2018. us

  2019. from

  2020. sin

  2021. once

  2022. and

  2023. for

  2024. all

  2025. God

  2026. in

  2027. his

  2028. extravagant

  2029. love

  2030. sends

  2031. his

  2032. son

  2033. to

  2034. endure

  2035. his

  2036. own

  2037. wrath

  2038. so

  2039. that

  2040. we

  2041. who

  2042. deserve

  2043. that

  2044. wrath

  2045. might

  2046. be

  2047. forgiven

  2048. on

  2049. the

  2050. cross

  2051. Jesus

  2052. does

  2053. what

  2054. none

  2055. of

  2056. the

  2057. judges

  2058. in

  2059. this

  2060. book

  2061. could

  2062. ever

  2063. do

  2064. he

  2065. perfectly

  2066. satisfies

  2067. God's

  2068. wrath

  2069. he

  2070. appeases

  2071. it

  2072. propitiates

  2073. it

  2074. is how

  2075. we would

  2076. say it

  2077. in

  2078. New

  2079. Testament

  2080. language

  2081. not

  2082. because

  2083. we

  2084. deserve

  2085. it

  2086. but

  2087. because

  2088. he

  2089. loves

  2090. us

  2091. that's

  2092. the

  2093. point

  2094. of

  2095. John

  2096. 3

  2097. 16

  2098. right

  2099. for

  2100. God

  2101. so

  2436. demonstrated through his son.

2437. There's an old hymn called How Firm a Foundation.

2438. Maybe some of you know it.

2439. There's a question in one of the verses.

2440. It says, what more can he say than to you he has said?

2441. I want to take that thought and ask you,

2442. what more must God do to motivate your worship?

  2443. What must he do?

2444. He can do nothing more.

2445. What more can he say than to you he has said?

  2446. Look at the cross.

  2447. Look at Christ.

2448. Look at the love that he has put on display.

2449. Look at the way that he woos us through the gospel.

2450. The gospel is his idea.

2451. We didn't even ask for it.

  2452. He provides it.

2453. Why would you continue to turn away from that?

2454. Why would you reject such love?

2455. What more must he do?

2456. Be a half-hearted creature no longer, as C.S. Lewis said.

2457. Wonder at the glory of God.

  2458. Turn to him.

2459. And you'll find, as James said, he's very near.

2460. Third thing, and we'll be finished.

2461. I want you to see the spiraling effect of Israel's apostasy.

2462. The spiraling effect of Israel's apostasy.

2463. Look with me at verse 17.

2464. We would expect at this point that, wow, look at, they didn't even ask for it, and God sent all these deliverers that took them out of this big problem.

2465. Surely Israel will now say, okay, we got it.

  2466. We messed up.

2467. We're going to be faithful now.

2468. But that's not what they do.

  2469. Verse 17.

2470. Yet they did not listen to their judges.

2471. They whored after other gods and bowed down to them.

2472. They soon turned aside from the way in which their fathers had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the Lord, and they did not do so.

  2473. Verse 19.

2474. But whenever the judge died, they turned back and were more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods, serving them and bowing down to them.

2475. They did not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways.

2476. You see, what's presented in judges is not merely a cycle.

  2477. It is a spiral.

2478. Despite everything that God had done to deliver them from their enemies, each successive generation spirals into deeper and deeper and deeper rebellion.

2479. They didn't turn back to God.

2480. Instead, they worsened, taking their parents' sin even further.

2481. Here's how Psalm 106 describes this particular generation.

2482. They did not destroy the peoples as the Lord commanded them, but they mixed with the nations and learned to do as they did.

2483. They served their idols, which became a snare to them.

2484. They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons.

2485. They poured out innocent blood and the blood of their sons and daughters whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was polluted with blood.

2486. Thus, they became unclean by their acts.

2487. They played the whore in their deeds.

2488. Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against his people.

  2489. He abhorred his heritage.

2490. He gave them into the hand of the nations so that those who hated them ruled over them.

  2491. Their enemies oppressed them.

2492. They were brought into subjection under their power.

2493. Many times he delivered them, but they were rebellious in their purposes.

2494. They were brought low through their iniquity.

  2495. Now, here's my question.

2496. How is this even possible?

  2497. How is this possible?

2498. How could they continue in such a downward spiral after God provides over and over and over and over?

  2499. It's like an addiction.

2500. You've known people with drug addiction, I'm sure.

2501. There comes a point to where their life is so gripped by the addiction, they know the damage it causes, but they can't get free from it.

  2502. They're a slave.

  2503. They're a slave.

  2504. That's what's happening here with Israel.

2505. We need to understand the pervasive power of sin.

2506. An unbeliever does not simply choose to sin.

  2507. They're a slave to sin.

2508. That doesn't remove our culpability.

2509. Of course, our sin is still our own.

2510. But we're also incapable of changing ourselves.

  2511. That's the thing.

2512. We need God's gracious intervention.

2513. Otherwise, we'll always choose the gods of this world.

  2514. Always.

2515. What Israel needed was a king who would not only deliver them from Canaanite enemies, but from their own sinful condition.

2516. We desperately need new hearts.

2517. What Jesus called the new birth or being born again.

2518. And that's exactly what Jesus came to do for us.

2519. That was the promise made from God through the prophets.

2520. That in the new covenant, one day, he was going to send someone.

2521. And this new covenant king was going to come.

2522. And he was going to provide a new heart.

2523. And he was going to write his law on our hearts.

2524. And we would love him.

2525. And he would be our God.

2526. And we would be his people.

2527. And that's what Jesus came to do.

2528. The good news is that God provides this new heart and this new birth through the gospel of Christ.

  2529. Hear his gospel.

  2530. Come to Jesus.

  2531. Turn from sin.

2532. Don't let what's meant to save you harden you even further.

  2533. Because that's what's happened with Israel.

2534. But you have no excuse.

  2535. Christ has come.

  2536. The king has come.

  2537. The gospel has come.

2538. A new heart is available.

  2539. Come to Christ.

2540. In the end, what we end up finding is that this cycle really just outlines the gospel, doesn't it?

2541. We're all guilty before God.

2542. We're destined to face his wrath.

2543. But in his love, God provides a way for us to be reconciled to him.

2544. Through the sacrifice of his own son.

2545. And then Jesus, as our king and Messiah, beckons us to come back and to receive forgiveness through him.

2546. And we are responsible to trust him to turn from sin.

  2547. It's the gospel.

  2548. Believe it.

2549. The text, as I said at the beginning, it should humble us as it relates to our sin.

2550. Because if we're struggling with sin right now, even as a believer, a true believer, at the heart of that is an issue of worship.

2551. At least in the moment of your sin, you find something that the world offers more desirable than God.

2552. And in that moment, your worship turns away from Yahweh.

2553. And it turns to this thing, this fleeting pleasure.

2554. Or this empty prosperity or promise of it.

  2555. It should humble us.

2556. We don't sin just because, you know, we kind of blame something.

2557. Or we just kind of blame the fact, well, nobody's perfect.

  2558. That kind of thing.

  2559. That's true.

2560. But it should humble us.

2561. What's really at the heart of that is we've forsaken true worship.

2562. But there's more to this text.

2563. It really should lead us to stand in awe of such an amazing God.

  2564. Such love.

  2565. Compassion.

  2566. Such pursuit.

  2567. Despite our continual rejection.

2568. That's what's so amazing about it, right?

2569. Maybe some of you guys were like me and you were pursuing your spouse for a while.

2570. And over and over and over, they're thinking, no way.

  2571. Leave me alone, please.

2572. And eventually you broke them down, right?

2573. It doesn't work that way with God.

2574. We're the ones who keep saying, no way.

  2575. No way.

  2576. Leave me alone.

  2577. Leave me alone.

  2578. Leave me alone.

2579. He's the one that keeps saying, no.

  2580. I want you.

  2581. I love you.

2582. Look what I've done for you.

  2583. Turn to me.

  2584. Have peace.

  2585. Joy.

  2586. Love.

2587. Who is a God like that?

  2588. There isn't one.

  2589. It's only Him.

  2590. Don't turn Him away.

  2591. Come to Him.

2592. You'll find that He's everything and more than what He said.

2593. Well, that's better for you.

  2594. Thank you.
