  1. The Othniel cycle is paradigmatic in the sense that it provides us with a general framework

  2. that guides our understanding of all the other cycles.

  3. Very little detail is given us here.

  4. This is the shortest of all of the judge narratives here.

  5. There's little detail given about the people and the circumstances involved.

  6. And that's because the purpose here is to show us a pattern that structures every story.

  7. And it's the pattern that we find already mentioned in chapter 2.

  8. So one author describes it this way.

  9. That the Othniel cycle gives historical flesh to the theological bones of chapter 2.

  10. So when we're thinking, what is the, actually the, why it says so little about what is happening here.

  11. So what's really the purpose in including it?

  12. Well, the author has a particular purpose.

  13. He's told us in chapter 2 his theological interpretation of Israel's unfaithfulness.

  14. He's given us this cycle of sin and judgment and salvation that just returns back to sin and judgment and salvation again.

  15. And now he takes a real life example from Israel's history at the beginning of this time period.

  16. And he says, it's a lot like this into the Othniel cycle.

  17. And he just gives us kind of the bare bones of this structure.

  18. So we come to it and we may think, relative to all the other stories and judges, this one is boring.

  19. There's not much here.

  20. It's very bland.

  21. But before you dismiss it, there's something else we need to consider about its purpose.

  22. This opening cycle is intentionally vague because it's not ultimately about Israel.

  23. It's not about Kushan Rishathame.

  24. It's not even about Othniel.

  25. It's about God's divine action through, for, and against these people.

  26. In this text, Kushan Rishathame is not the judge of Israel.

  27. God is.

  28. In the same sense, Othniel is not really the true savior in this narrative.

  29. God is the savior here.

  30. Israel doesn't sin in the eyes of the world.

  31. Israel sins in the eyes of God.

  32. And the rest that is awarded to them in verse 11 is not won because of Israel's valiance in war.

  33. It is given to them as a gift of God's grace.

  34. You say, well, what are you saying?

  35. I'm saying that we're not meant to be distracted by the people and the circumstances.

  36. Our eyes are meant to be set on the God who is sovereign over all of them.

  37. And this is a critical dynamic to this paradigm that the Othniel cycle presents to us.

  38. No matter what narrative we're studying as we work through the book of Judges,

  39. it is always about the glory of God.

  40. It's never about these men.

  41. It's never really about Israel.

  42. Ultimately, it's about telling us who God is and how God acts

  43. and how he has provided salvation for his people.

  44. Now, whenever I teach Adventure Club, whenever it's my turn to teach the lesson,

  45. I have this habit of repeating a couple of phrases

  46. whenever their eyes begin to wonder a little bit.

  47. This happens on Sunday mornings, but I don't usually say the phrases.

  48. Sometimes there's lots happening around.

  49. When we were at the acting out studio, it was the worst

  50. because we had all those windows, right?

  51. So people could be pulling into the parking lot

  52. or walking right behind the windows and staring in,

  53. not realizing that there's people staring right back and all those things.

  54. Now, take all of our kids in our church.

  55. You put them there, and you don't have the backdrop anymore.

  56. A lot of times we did, but sometimes we didn't have the backdrop,

  57. and then all this stuff is happening.

  58. Their eyes begin to wonder, doesn't it?

  59. And when your eyes wonder, your mind wonders, right?

  60. And so I would have these phrases that I say all the time.

  61. I'd say, all right, give me your eyes.

  62. Give me your eyes, or all eyes on me.

  63. Now, when we come to this particular passage,

  64. I think that's a helpful way to understand what's happening here.

  65. It's as if God is saying, all right, give me your eyes.

  66. There's lots of things here to distract us.

  67. We can get into Othniel, and we can get into Cushan, Rishathame,

  68. and we can get into Mesopotamia and where that is

  69. and what that's all about and what exactly happened in this whole scenario.

  70. We can get distracted with all those stuff, all those things,

  71. but God's saying right from the beginning,

  72. as you go through this, keep your eyes on me.

  73. Look at me.

  74. This is about me, God says.

  75. So that's what I want to lead you to do this morning.

  76. As we work through this text,

  77. I want to lead you to turn your eyes to the Lord God, okay?

  78. So we're going to try our best to take our eyes off of the circumstances and the people,

  79. and we're going to look at how God is acting here.

  80. And the first thing that we find that is true about him is his holiness,

  81. the holiness of God.

  82. Verse 7.

  83. The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  84. They forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Asherah.

  85. Now, as always, the cycle opens with a statement of Israel's apostasy.

  86. And as we learned in chapter 2,

  87. the heart of Israel's evil was an issue of worship.

  88. It's an issue of worship.

  89. That's why Baal and the Asherah are mentioned once again here.

  90. Now, it's not that Israel had become ignorant of God.

  91. Neither is it that they suffered from some type of spiritual amnesia

  92. that just caused them to intellectually forget him.

  93. That's not what this means.

  94. The nation as a whole willfully abandoned the Lord to pursue the gods of Canaan.

  95. To them, what Baal offered was more attractive.

  96. It was more desirable.

  97. So they left Yahweh in their worship of Yahweh to go after the gods of the land.

  98. But instead of rehashing that all over again, we did that in chapter 2.

  99. Instead of rehashing that, I want to point out an important word in this verse.

  100. Look at it with me again at the very beginning.

  101. The people of Israel are said to have done evil in the sight of the Lord.

  102. It's important.

  103. It's important.

  104. Because to Israel, to the Israelites, they saw no problem mixing with the people of the land.

  105. Culturally, maritally, religiously.

  106. They just didn't think it was a big deal.

  107. That's why over and over and over in the book of Judges, we see this refrain where it says that all the people did what was right in their own eyes.

  108. But when we come here, we find that the evil that they have done is evil not in their eyes.

  109. It's evil in the sight of God.

  110. If this generation of Israelites lived today, perhaps they would say something like this.

  111. We're not quite as old-fashioned as our parents were.

  112. We believe to be on the right side of history.

  113. It's necessary to affirm the culture and beliefs of the people around us.

  114. After all, who are we to say that the way of Yahweh is better than the way of Baal?

  115. Well, surely we can find ways to accommodate the deeply held beliefs of the people of the land.

  116. It's not hard to see how many Christians today follow this same path, right?

  117. We've got to remember, good and evil are not determined by the ever-changing winds of culture.

  118. There must be objective truth.

  119. That doesn't change.

  120. And that's what God has revealed for us in His Word.

  121. If there's anything that we must stand on as a first order of importance in Christian faith,

  122. it must be that God has given His Word that is infallible.

  123. It's inerrant.

  124. It's inspired.

  125. And it's authoritative.

  126. It is objective truth.

  127. And it remains objective truth in every season and in every culture and among every people group.

  128. What matters is what God says.

  129. Not what we feel.

  130. It doesn't matter that the people of Israel did what they felt was good and right.

  131. Evil is what God says it is.

  132. And we need to remember that.

  133. He's the Holy One.

  134. He alone determines good and evil.

  135. All of our beliefs, then, must be subject to His Word.

  136. Now, I'm not denying that we don't live in a complex time

  137. and that there aren't issues that arise among our culture and among our churches and among our families

  138. that aren't complex.

  139. And we have to grapple with that.

  140. It's not usually as black and white as we want it to be.

  141. I'm not denying that that's true.

  142. But what I mean to say is that all of our convictions,

  143. they must first be rooted in God's Word.

  144. They must be.

  145. Our thoughts on gender and sex and race and marriage and worship and our work

  146. must all be rooted in what God is,

  147. what God has said,

  148. and what God has done.

  149. And too often we get that backwards.

  150. Where we're presented with a particular issue in our lives

  151. or we're presented with an issue that we really need to deal with,

  152. whether it's in our family or in our church

  153. or maybe it's just with a co-worker or something like that in conversation.

  154. And you can't just ignore it.

  155. You have to deal with it in some way.

  156. You have to think about it.

  157. And so many times we start at the wrong end.

  158. We start by kind of examining the thoughts that are out there

  159. and the different perspectives.

  160. And then we examine what is my personal experience like

  161. versus what is their personal experience like?

  162. And can we come to some type of truth?

  163. And once we kind of get an idea of where we're going to land

  164. on the thought process and on the issue itself,

  165. then we kind of go to the Word as Christians

  166. and we say, okay, does this fit with what the Bible says?

  167. And see, the danger in that is that we'll always end up

  168. making the Bible say what we want it to say.

  169. We got to get that the other way around

  170. so that no matter what the issue is,

  171. we start here and we ask questions.

  172. What does the Word say?

  173. What does it say about who God is?

  174. What does it say about what God does?

  175. What does it say about God's character and the way he acts?

  176. What are the implications of all of that?

  177. And then once we establish all of that theologically

  178. in our hearts and in our minds,

  179. then we sit down from there

  180. and we start to view all of the issues in our lives

  181. and in our culture and in our church

  182. through the lens of the Bible.

  183. Because if we don't do that, we'll end up being like Israel.

  184. And we'll slip into these cycles of self-destructive sin

  185. and we'll get to the end and everything seems okay to us.

  186. We reason it out.

  187. It's rational.

  188. But then it ends up being evil in the sight of God.

  189. Because what we ultimately did

  190. was cause his Word to fit what we thought

  191. rather than fixing what we think

  192. on the foundation of his Word.

  193. Are you with me?

  194. There's an issue here with Israel,

  195. their worship, their view of the Bible.

  196. It's an issue with Christianity today.

  197. The biggest issue I think that we're facing

  198. as Christians and in churches today

  199. is a high view of the Scripture.

  200. We're losing a commitment

  201. to the faithful exposition of the Bible in many churches.

  202. We're losing the conviction of the inerrancy of the Bible,

  203. of its authoritative nature

  204. and we're starting to give in

  205. to all of these other things culturally.

  206. We can't do that.

  207. If we do, we're gonna end up in the same boat as Israel,

  208. living in a way that's evil in the sight of God.

  209. And we don't want to do that.

  210. Because what happens when you do what's right in your eyes?

  211. Even if it's evil in God's eyes, what happens?

  212. Let's read on and see.

  213. Verse eight, we find the wrath of God.

  214. The wrath of God.

  215. Therefore, the anger of the Lord

  216. was kindled against Israel.

  217. He sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathame,

  218. king of Mesopotamia,

  219. and the people of Israel served Cushan Rishathame.

  220. Eight years.

  221. Now there's always consequences to sin.

  222. And in this case,

  223. Israel's consequence was to be conquered

  224. by this man, Cushan Rishathame,

  225. king of Mesopotamia.

  226. Now we aren't given any additional information

  227. about this king except what is revealed in his name.

  228. And I actually think it's interesting.

  229. Maybe you will too.

  230. His name means double wickedness.

  231. Something I'm sure didn't come from his mother.

  232. Can you imagine?

  233. You know what?

  234. I'm gonna name this kid.

  235. Double wickedness.

  236. Maybe some of you could go back

  237. and you could change the name of your children.

  238. This is probably a later name used to mock him.

  239. Probably an Israelite term that's used later on

  240. in reflecting back on this time.

  241. And it's safe to assume that whatever he was

  242. and whatever he was like,

  243. he was twice as wicked as the people of Israel were.

  244. Now think about how wicked that is.

  245. The people of Israel at this point

  246. are involving themselves in public prostitution

  247. as a form of worship.

  248. Eventually, they're gonna make their way

  249. to where they're sacrificing their children

  250. to the gods of Canaan, to Moloch and to Bill

  251. and to these various gods of the people of the land.

  252. And now they say, this guy that came in

  253. and that the Lord sold us into the hand of,

  254. he was twice as bad as we were.

  255. And it was terrible.

  256. Can you imagine what this was like for them?

  257. Now, it's also a play on words with his title.

  258. Title, King of Mesopotamia

  259. is how it is probably recorded in your English translation.

  260. Mesopotamia, you don't need to think about that

  261. so much as an exact location.

  262. As much as it means double rivers.

  263. So basically, Israel was conquered by double wickedness

  264. from the double rivers.

  265. But the emphasis of this text

  266. is not on Cushan, Rishathame's power to conquer Israel.

  267. The emphasis in the text

  268. is on God's action in selling them.

  269. Notice what it says in verse eight.

  270. Look at it with me again.

  271. The anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel

  272. and he sold them.

  273. That's what we're meant to see.

  274. We're not meant to see this weird guy,

  275. the double wicked guy from the double rivers.

  276. We're meant to see the God

  277. who sold his own people into the hand of this man.

  278. This episode isn't about world powers.

  279. This episode is about divine wrath.

  280. Wrath, anger, the anger of the Lord.

  281. Now, there's no way to get around

  282. dealing with the fact of God's anger

  283. in the book of Judges.

  284. Can't get around it.

  285. We don't like to talk about it.

  286. It's not the fun part to talk about in the Bible.

  287. But we do need to understand it.

  288. And one of the things that we need to understand

  289. is that there's two dynamics to God's anger.

  290. Barry Webb is helpful in pointing these out.

  291. I think this is on the screen

  292. if you want to follow along with me.

  293. The first thing is retribution.

  294. Retribution, which is pure punishment,

  295. unmitigated by grace,

  296. is for those who are and remain

  297. outside of his covenant.

  298. As Paul says to the Ephesians,

  299. they have no hope and are without God in the world.

  300. Okay, so that's one part of the wrath of God.

  301. We talk about, that's usually what we think about

  302. when we think about God's wrath.

  303. We think about his wrath being poured out

  304. against unregenerate sinners,

  305. which ultimately, its final conclusion,

  306. is eternal hell, right?

  307. That's the wrath and the anger of God

  308. set against those that are outside of his covenant.

  309. But there's a second thing here.

  310. Within God's covenant with his people,

  311. a different kind of judgment takes place.

  312. The most appropriate term for it is discipline.

  313. Because it is corrective rather than retributive.

  314. And it is always tempered by grace.

  315. It can be severe,

  316. but its aim is always to reclaim

  317. rather than destroy.

  318. Do you see the difference here?

  319. Just because you're a Christian,

  320. just because you're within God's covenant now,

  321. doesn't mean that you're absolutely free

  322. from God's anger.

  323. God will judge our sin.

  324. He doesn't do it with us in the same way

  325. that he does it with unbelievers,

  326. but he does take us through corrective discipline.

  327. And let me tell you,

  328. corrective discipline is hard.

  329. It's hard.

  330. Nothing Israel faced here was pleasant,

  331. but it wasn't God's way of cutting them off either.

  332. He was disciplining his people

  333. in order that he might lead them

  334. on the path of repentance.

  335. And in this sense,

  336. the anger of the Lord is a means of hope.

  337. It's a means of hope and love.

  338. Dale Ralph Davis is helpful here.

  339. Serving Kushan Rishathame

  340. may not sound like salvation to us,

  341. and it isn't.

  342. But if it forces us to lose our grip on Baal,

  343. it may be the beginning of salvation.

  344. I love that statement so much.

  345. You ever get to a point in your life,

  346. you may not even realize

  347. how idolatrous you actually are.

  348. Because at the heart of all of our sin

  349. is idolatry, right?

  350. In some form or fashion, it's idolatry.

  351. We don't even always realize exactly

  352. how many idols we have that have gripped us

  353. and that we've been holding onto ourselves.

  354. And then you get to a point in your life

  355. where God is clearly,

  356. he is bringing you through a difficult time.

  357. And it's not just that he's testing your faith.

  358. There is a measure of judgment happening here.

  359. There is corrective discipline happening here.

  360. And you come to the Lord and you say,

  361. why are you doing this?

  362. You ever thought that God's discipline

  363. is meant to loosen your grip

  364. on the idols that you have allowed

  365. to come into your life?

  366. I love that phrase so much.

  367. It shows that the covenant God

  368. who has bound himself to his people

  369. will not allow them to be cozy in their infidelity.

  370. Steadfast love pursues them in their iniquity

  371. and is not above inflicting misery even

  372. in order to awaken them.

  373. What is the anger of the Lord

  374. meant to do for his people?

  375. To lead them to repentance,

  376. to awaken them,

  377. to loosen their grip on this world,

  378. to loosen their grip on the idols

  379. that as I think it was Calvin said,

  380. and our heart is a factory of idols.

  381. It is to loosen the grip on all of those things

  382. in order that we may turn again and again

  383. back to him, back to him.

  384. Even God's people face his anger.

  385. Not as punitive action,

  386. please hear me correctly here,

  387. but as corrective discipline.

  388. To be sure,

  389. Christ has taken God's eternal wrath

  390. against our sins.

  391. That's the glory of the gospel.

  392. Those who belong to him

  393. will never, ever have to endure death and hell.

  394. But the Bible still tells us

  395. that he takes us through discipline

  396. as a loving father.

  397. Proverbs chapter three,

  398. Hebrews 12.

  399. Do not despise the Lord's discipline

  400. or be weary of his reproof.

  401. For the Lord reproves him whom he loves

  402. as a father, the son,

  403. in whom he delights.

  404. Hebrews 12.

  405. What's the purpose of this in our lives?

  406. Why does it seem like God's so hard on us sometimes?

  407. He disciplines us for our good,

  408. that we may share his holiness.

  409. For the moment,

  410. all discipline seems painful

  411. rather than pleasant,

  412. but later,

  413. it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness

  414. to those who have been trained by it.

  415. It may be much later,

  416. like it was for Israel.

  417. But the discipline of the Lord builds us up.

  418. So we need not get bitter against him.

  419. We should glory in the fact

  420. that he loves us enough to correct us.

  421. And he always gives us grace to endure.

  422. Number three,

  423. the salvation of God.

  424. Salvation of God.

  425. We see the holiness of God in verse seven.

  426. We see the wrath of God,

  427. the anger of God in verse eight.

  428. Verses nine and 10,

  429. we see his salvation.

  430. But when the people of Israel cried out to the Lord,

  431. the Lord raised up a deliverer

  432. for the people of Israel

  433. who saved them.

  434. Othniel, the son of Kenaz,

  435. Caleb's younger brother,

  436. the spirit of the Lord was upon him.

  437. And he judged Israel.

  438. He went out to war

  439. and the Lord gave Cushanrishathame,

  440. king of Mesopotamia,

  441. into his hand

  442. and his hand prevailed over Cushanrishathame.

  443. I appreciate the author leaving that name in there

  444. so many times in this thing.

  445. Say that five times fast.

  446. Okay, so God's instrument of judgment here

  447. is Cushanrishathame.

  448. His instrument of salvation,

  449. Othniel,

  450. the nephew and son-in-law of Caleb,

  451. who was one of the 10 spies.

  452. He was the only one along with Joshua

  453. who came back with a good report.

  454. Yes, the Lord will give us the land.

  455. You know the stories.

  456. We've been introduced to him

  457. in parallel passages of Joshua chapter 15,

    Joshua 15 chapter mention

  458. Judges chapter one,

  459. but nothing more is said about him here

  460. than what we already know.

  461. Why?

  462. Again, the reason for that

  463. is that our eyes are meant to be set

  464. on the Lord who delivers his people.

  465. Othniel is merely an instrument

  466. in the hands of the almighty God

  467. who raised him up and empowered him.

  468. Our eyes aren't to be set on Othniel here.

  469. Our eyes are to be set on Yahweh.

  470. Now, crucial to this paradigm,

  471. remember this is paradigmatic,

  472. this paradigm that Othniel cycle

  473. is presenting for us as we move forward.

  474. Crucial to this

  475. is this fact of God's love

  476. being set on his people in salvation.

  477. It's crucial.

  478. Yes, he's a holy God who must judge sin,

  479. but he's also a loving God

  480. who takes pity on us in our suffering.

  481. That's what's meant by Israel's cry.

  482. This isn't a reference to their repentance.

  483. This is a reference to their cry for help in distress.

  484. This isn't the son

  485. who's just suffered the consequences of his sin

  486. running to his father and saying,

  487. I'll never do it again.

  488. That's not what this is.

  489. This is help, please, help.

  490. You ever tell your kids,

  491. don't touch the stove, it's hot.

  492. And then at some point,

  493. they walk over and they touch the stove.

  494. The first thing that they say

  495. when they touch the stove is not,

  496. oh, mom, forgive me of my sin.

  497. I repent of touching the stove.

  498. No, they say, ah!

  499. And they run.

  500. And what are they wanting you to do

  501. when they run to you?

  502. Do something to take this pain away.

  503. That's what Israel's doing.

  504. They're crying out to the Lord,

  505. not out of repentance.

  506. They're running to the Lord.

  507. Lord, do something.

  508. Take this away from us.

  509. Relieve us.

  510. In our distress.

  511. In our distress.

  512. God displays his loving compassion

  513. by raising up a deliverer

  514. who would save them

  515. from the hand of their enemies.

  516. What love is this?

  517. That's what Davis says again.

  518. Who then can plumb the abyss

  519. of Yahweh's pity for his people?

  520. Even his sinful people

  521. who are moved more by their distress

  522. than by their depravity.

  523. Yahweh is indeed the one

  524. who could bear Israel's suffering no longer.

  525. What sheer grace

  526. when Yahweh delivers.

  527. What is this meant to teach us here?

  528. Not that Othniel was a mighty warrior,

  529. even though he might have been that.

  530. It's to teach us the love of God

  531. set on his people

  532. even when they're merely concerned

  533. about their pain

  534. and not their sin.

  535. Now take a moment to consider

  536. God's instrument of judgment

  537. and God's instrument of salvation

  538. side by side here.

  539. God allowed

  540. Kushan Rishathame

  541. to overcome Israel temporarily.

  542. That's different

  543. than what he does with Othniel.

  544. He allows man's power

  545. to come in

  546. and inflict his people.

  547. But he empowers

  548. Othniel

  549. with his spirit.

  550. That's a different thing.

  551. Look again with me.

  552. Verse 9.

  553. The people cried out to the Lord.

  554. The Lord raised up

  555. a deliverer for the people of Israel

  556. who saved them.

  557. Othniel.

  558. Verse 10.

  559. The spirit of the Lord

  560. was upon him.

  561. That's why he saved Israel.

  562. Not because he was strong

  563. but because the Lord

  564. empowered him to do so.

  565. Now we need to consider

  566. those two dynamics

  567. side by side.

  568. Sometimes God's instrument

  569. for judgment

  570. is to step back

  571. and say,

  572. let man's power

  573. come against you.

  574. But whenever God is working

  575. on behalf of his people,

  576. he doesn't trust our power

  577. to fight for ourselves.

  578. He empowers us

  579. with his spirit

  580. to fight those battles.

  581. That's what he's doing here

  582. with Othniel.

  583. On the one hand,

  584. man's power is set

  585. against God's people.

  586. On the other,

  587. God's power is working

  588. on behalf of his people.

  589. And God's power

  590. crushes every enemy.

  591. He always prevails.

  592. The salvation of our God

  593. is certain

  594. for all who belong

  595. to him.

  596. It will never fail.

  597. He's always in control.

  598. He's in control

  599. of the enemy.

  600. He's in control

  601. of the Savior.

  602. And he always empowers

  603. his Savior.

  604. And no enemy

  605. can defeat him.

  606. What is this meant

  607. to point us toward?

  608. You know the answer.

  609. It all points forward

  610. to Jesus.

  611. The true and better

  612. Othniel.

  613. He too was chosen

  614. and empowered by God

  615. to bring us

  616. a greater salvation

  617. than Israel ever experienced.

  618. Their enemy

  619. was a mere man.

  620. Ours is death

  621. and hell

  622. and eternal damnation.

  623. But God's power

  624. through Jesus

  625. crushes every enemy.

  626. Even death itself.

  627. Romans 8.

  628. What then shall we say

  629. to these things?

  630. If God is for us

  631. who can be against us?

  632. He who did not spare

  633. his own son

  634. but gave him up

  635. for us all

  636. how will he not

  637. also with him

  638. graciously give us

  639. all things?

  640. Who shall bring a charge

  641. against God's elect?

  642. It's God's

  643. that justifies.

  644. Who is to condemn?

  645. Christ Jesus

  646. is the one who died.

  647. More than that.

  648. Who was raised?

  649. Who is at the right

  650. hand of God?

  651. Who is interceding

  652. for us?

  653. And who shall separate us

  654. from this love of Christ?

  655. Shall tribulation

  656. or distress

  657. or persecution

  658. or famine

  659. or nakedness

  660. or danger

  661. or sword?

  662. No.

  663. In all these things

  664. we are more than conquerors

  665. through him

  666. who loved us.

  667. for I am sure

  668. that neither death

  669. nor life

  670. nor angels

  671. nor rulers

  672. nor things present

  673. nor things to come

  674. nor powers

  675. nor height

  676. nor depth

  677. nor anything else

  678. in all creation

  679. will be able

  680. to separate us

  681. from the love of God

  682. in Christ Jesus

  683. our Lord.

  684. Salvation

  685. belongs

  686. to God.

  687. He has heard

  688. our cries

  689. for distress

  690. and he has raised up

  691. a deliverer

  692. for our salvation

  693. and it's not Othniel

  694. it's Jesus Christ

  695. his own son.

  696. That's the salvation

  697. of God.

  698. But there's a final thing here.

  699. Verse 11

  700. we see the gift of God.

  701. The gift of God.

  702. Look with me

  703. at verse 11.

  704. So the land

  705. had rest

  706. 40 years.

  707. Then Othniel

  708. the son

  709. of Kenaz

  710. died.

  711. The rest here

  712. was applied

  713. to the land.

  714. Notice it doesn't say

  715. Israel had rest

  716. it says that the land

  717. had rest.

  718. Rest

  719. was given to the land

  720. for 40 years.

  721. That means

  722. that in the absence

  723. of war

  724. the land

  725. was able to recover

  726. and be fruitful

  727. for the people.

  728. You gotta imagine

  729. in those days

  730. a mighty king

  731. comes in

  732. and he sets up

  733. shop for 8 years.

  734. He's not

  735. leaving fertile farmland

  736. for the Israelites

  737. to take.

  738. He's using that

  739. for himself.

  740. They are subjected

  741. to him.

  742. Now God

  743. in the absence

  744. of Cushan Rishatham

  745. and in the absence

  746. of war for 40 years

  747. allows the land

  748. to recover

  749. in order that life

  750. in the land

  751. of promise

  752. may once again

  753. flourish

  754. for the people

  755. of Israel.

  756. Okay so you understand

  757. the gift here.

  758. The gift is rest

  759. for the land

  760. which is ultimately

  761. in some sense

  762. rest for the people.

  763. Now here's how

  764. I want you to think

  765. about this.

  766. God's temporal

  767. or temporary

  768. dealings

  769. with his physical

  770. people

  771. the nation

  772. of Israel

  773. give us a glimpse

  774. into his eternal

  775. dealings

  776. with his spiritual

  777. people

  778. which are all

  779. of those

  780. who have

  781. entered his covenant

  782. of grace

  783. by faith.

  784. Doesn't matter

  785. if it's New Testament

  786. or Old Testament

  787. if they have

  788. entered his covenant

  789. of grace

  790. by faith

  791. just as Abraham

  792. did

  793. they are a part

  794. of the people

  795. the covenant

  796. people of God.

  797. Okay

  798. what God does

  799. with a physical

  800. nation

  801. in the Old Testament

  802. with Israel

  803. points us

  804. to what God

  805. is ultimately

  806. doing through

  807. his covenant

  808. people

  809. his spiritual

  810. people

  811. and with that

  812. in mind

  813. I want you to

  814. consider a couple

  815. of things

  816. about this rest.

  817. Number one

  818. the rest

  819. was a gift

  820. it wasn't

  821. an achievement

  822. it was a gift

  823. it came about

  824. because God

  825. gave

  826. Kushan Rishathame

  827. into the hand

  828. of Atnil

  829. and this is

  830. fundamental

  831. to our understanding

  832. of salvation

  833. it is not

  834. won

  835. through our

  836. best moral

  837. and religious

  838. efforts

  839. it is a gift

  840. of grace

  841. from the hand

  842. of God

  843. we don't

  844. earn it

  845. we receive

  846. it

  847. by faith

  848. in God's

  849. promise

  850. the rest

  851. for Israel

  852. that's what

  853. we're meant

  854. to see here

  855. they didn't

  856. praise Atnil

  857. for this rest

  858. they could have

  859. only praised

  860. God

  861. God's the one

  862. that gave

  863. them the rest

  864. there's a second

  865. thing here

  866. and that is

  867. that the rest

  868. was limited

  869. was limited

  870. they only got

  871. 40 years

  872. at the end

  873. of 40 years

  874. their savior

  875. died

  876. and he didn't

  877. come back

  878. he stayed

  879. dead

  880. and what we'll

  881. find in the

  882. first verse

  883. of next week's

  884. passage is that

  885. Israel just

  886. went right back

  887. to the same

  888. sin that they

  889. were guilty

  890. of in verse

  891. seven

  892. so the land

  893. its rest

  894. was limited

  895. and the hard

  896. truth here

  897. is that

  898. rest can

  899. never be

  900. permanent

  901. in a world

  902. that is ruled

  903. by death

  904. can't be

  905. we spend

  906. so much time

  907. in our lives

  908. looking for

  909. some kind

  910. of rest

  911. here

  912. and you're

  913. never gonna

  914. get it

  915. that's the

  916. thing

  917. so long

  918. as we live

  919. here

  920. bones will

  921. still break

  922. hearts

  923. will still

  924. break

  925. families

  926. and churches

  927. and cultures

  928. and governments

  929. will fall

  930. they'll be

  931. divided

  932. so long

  933. as we are

  934. in this

  935. life

  936. we cannot

  937. have this

  938. permanent

  939. rest that

  940. we're longing

  941. for

  942. as great

  943. as Othniel

  944. seems to

  945. have been

  946. he couldn't

  947. give Israel

  948. what it

  949. ultimately

  950. was longing

  951. for

  952. he couldn't

  953. give them

  954. permanent

  955. rest

  956. he was still

  957. a sinner

  958. in a fallen

  959. world

  960. himself

  961. and the

  962. temporary

  963. rest that

  964. Israel

  965. received

  966. was a

  967. wonderful

  968. blessing

  969. don't get

  970. me wrong

  971. I'm not

  972. trying to

  973. rain on

  974. their parade

  975. here

  976. that's not

  977. at all

  978. what I'm

  979. trying to

  980. do

  981. we are

  982. grateful

  983. for every

  984. moment of

  985. physical rest

  986. that the

  987. Lord is

  988. kind to

  989. give us

  990. but we

  991. all long

  992. for a

  993. kind of

  994. rest

  995. and renewal

  996. that will

  997. never

  998. end

  999. we long

  1000. for

  1001. an existence

  1002. that isn't

  1003. plagued

  1004. by anxiety

  1005. do you ever

  1006. lay in your

  1007. bed at night

  1008. and you

  1009. just think

  1010. of the

  1011. absolute

  1012. worst

  1013. possible

  1014. scenarios

  1015. for your

  1016. family

  1017. ever do

  1018. that

  1019. I do

  1020. that

  1021. Julie and

  1022. I talk

  1023. about it

  1024. sometimes

  1025. we've got

  1026. like these

  1027. things with

  1028. the girls

  1029. that are

  1030. like our

  1031. worst

  1032. nightmares

  1033. that could

  1034. ever

  1035. happen

  1036. to them

  1037. and we

  1038. lay in our

  1039. beds

  1040. and we're

  1041. like have

  1042. you ever

  1043. thought

  1044. if this

  1045. happened

  1046. to Ashlyn

  1047. or if this

  1048. happened

  1049. with the

  1050. new baby

  1051. or whatever

  1052. it is

  1053. and we

  1054. feel ourselves

  1055. with anxiety

  1056. so long

  1057. as we're

  1058. in this

  1059. life we'll

  1060. never have

  1061. rest from

  1062. that anxiety

  1063. in total

  1064. we long

  1065. for something

  1066. more

  1067. we long

  1068. for a night

  1069. where we can

  1070. lay in bed

  1071. and we're

  1072. free from

  1073. all anxiety

  1074. and all worry

  1075. and all sin

  1076. and all struggle

  1077. and we ask

  1078. is it even

  1079. possible to

  1080. experience that

  1081. which brings

  1082. us to a

  1083. final point

  1084. of gospel

  1085. application

  1086. in the end

  1087. Othniel

  1088. died

  1089. that's as far

  1090. as his help

  1091. could go

  1092. what we need

  1093. and what Israel

  1094. needed was a

  1095. savior who

  1096. can conquer

  1097. death

  1098. a savior

  1099. who can

  1100. break this

  1101. vicious cycle

  1102. of self

  1103. destruction

  1104. by dealing

  1105. with our

  1106. sin

  1107. once and

  1108. for all

  1109. and the

  1110. good news

  1111. is

  1112. you've heard

  1113. it over

  1114. and over

  1115. the good

  1116. news is

  1117. Jesus

  1118. is that

  1119. savior

  1120. sent from

  1121. God

  1122. he is

  1123. that one

  1124. he lived

  1125. the life

  1126. that we

  1127. were meant

  1128. to live

  1129. he died

  1130. the death

  1131. that we

  1132. deserve to

  1133. die

  1134. but that

  1135. only matters

  1136. because he

  1137. rose from

  1138. the dead

  1139. and in

  1140. rising from

  1141. the dead

  1142. he proves

  1143. that death

  1144. has no claim

  1145. on him

  1146. has no power

  1147. over him

  1148. it proves

  1149. that God

  1150. accepted

  1151. his sacrifice

  1152. on the cross

  1153. as a sufficient

  1154. payment and

  1155. atonement

  1156. for our

  1157. sins

  1158. he lives

  1159. he lives

  1160. peace

  1161. that's what

  1162. matters

  1163. here

  1164. and through

  1165. this

  1166. Jesus

  1167. God has

  1168. provided

  1169. eternal

  1170. peace

  1171. and rest

  1172. as a

  1173. gracious

  1174. gift

  1175. from the

  1176. hand of

  1177. God

  1178. and here's

  1179. the best

  1180. part of

  1181. it

  1182. he invites

  1183. all of

  1184. us

  1185. he invites

  1186. us all

  1187. to enter

  1188. this rest

  1189. by faith

  1190. it's the

  1191. exact

  1192. words

  1193. that Jesus

  1194. used

  1195. in Matthew

  1196. 11

  1197. come to

  1198. me

  1199. all

  1200. who labor

  1201. and are

  1202. heavy laden

  1203. and I

  1204. will give

  1205. you

  1206. rest

  1207. do you

  1208. labor

  1209. of course

  1210. you do

  1211. do you

  1212. struggle

  1213. yes

  1214. are you

  1215. looking for

  1216. meaning

  1217. and purpose

  1218. and something

  1219. good that

  1220. might actually

  1221. come out of

  1222. this pathetic

  1223. life that we

  1224. live

  1225. yes we're

  1226. looking for

  1227. all of those

  1228. things

  1229. we're striving

  1230. for all of

  1231. those things

  1232. and Jesus

  1233. has just

  1234. come to

  1235. me

  1236. and I

  1237. will give

  1238. it

  1239. take my

  1240. yoke upon

  1241. you

  1242. and learn

  1243. from me

  1244. for I am

  1245. gentle

  1246. and lowly

  1247. in heart

  1248. and listen

  1249. to what

  1250. he says

  1251. and you

  1252. will find

  1253. rest

  1254. for your

  1255. what

  1256. soul

  1257. Jesus

  1258. doesn't

  1259. offer

  1260. rest

  1261. for your

  1262. land

  1263. Jesus

  1264. doesn't

  1265. offer

  1266. rest

  1267. necessarily

  1268. for your

  1269. family

  1270. or for

  1271. your country

  1272. or necessarily

  1273. for your

  1274. church

  1275. it's rest

  1276. for your

  1277. soul

  1278. it's a

  1279. transcendent

  1280. rest

  1281. it goes

  1282. far

  1283. deeper

  1284. and far

  1285. longer

  1286. than

  1287. what we

  1288. hope for

  1289. now

  1290. and he

  1291. invites us

  1292. to it

  1293. he just

  1294. says if

  1295. you'll just

  1296. come to

  1297. me

  1298. I will

  1299. give it

  1300. to you

  1301. salvation

  1302. is a

  1303. gift of

  1304. God's

  1305. grace

  1306. through

  1307. Jesus

  1308. and he

  1309. is pleased

  1310. to offer

  1311. it to

  1312. you

  1313. but here's

  1314. the thing

  1315. I want to

  1316. emphasize this

  1317. morning before

  1318. we finish

  1319. and I

  1320. know you've

  1321. heard it

  1322. and I'm

  1323. not ignorant

  1324. to the

  1325. fact that

  1326. probably every

  1327. person that's

  1328. here this

  1329. morning I

  1330. know it's

  1331. just a few

  1332. of us but

  1333. probably every

  1334. person here

  1335. has made

  1336. some kind of

  1337. profession of

  1338. faith in

  1339. Christ I'm

  1340. not ignorant

  1341. of that but

  1342. I want to

  1343. make the

  1344. point

  1345. anyways

  1346. the good

  1347. thing about

  1348. this is

  1349. that he's

  1350. pleased to

  1351. offer it

  1352. to you

  1353. now

  1354. now

  1355. that's the

  1356. thing

  1357. sometimes we

  1358. get this

  1359. idea that

  1360. we have

  1361. to we

  1362. have to

  1363. hear this

  1364. like voice

  1365. from heaven

  1366. that something

  1367. magical has

  1368. to happen in

  1369. our lives to

  1370. where suddenly

  1371. we feel

  1372. like like

  1373. Christians

  1374. let me tell

  1375. you most

  1376. days I

  1377. don't feel

  1378. much like a

  1379. Christian at

  1380. least in the

  1381. way that we

  1382. romanticize

  1383. that feeling

  1384. let me tell

  1385. you I

  1386. don't know

  1387. what you

  1388. understand about

  1389. the gospel

  1390. what you

  1391. understand about

  1392. theology

  1393. there's nothing

  1394. you have to

  1395. wait on

  1396. you don't have

  1397. to wait on

  1398. some kind of

  1399. like supernatural

  1400. voice that

  1401. just opens the

  1402. clouds and

  1403. says okay

  1404. now's the

  1405. time now

  1406. you're allowed

  1407. to come to

  1408. me the

  1409. call has

  1410. already been

  1411. issued

  1412. it's here

  1413. Jesus said

  1414. it

  1415. sometimes we

  1416. get confused

  1417. about how

  1418. conversion

  1419. happens

  1420. conversion

  1421. we're not

  1422. waiting for

  1423. something weird

  1424. to happen

  1425. in our

  1426. lives

  1427. conversion

  1428. is come

  1429. to me

  1430. and I'll

  1431. give you

  1432. rest

  1433. conversion

  1434. is if

  1435. you will

  1436. confess with

  1437. your mouth

  1438. that Jesus

  1439. is Lord

  1440. and believe

  1441. in your

  1442. heart that

  1443. God raised

  1444. him from

  1445. the dead

  1446. you'll be

  1447. saved

  1448. conversion

  1449. is believe

  1450. on the name

  1451. of the Lord

  1452. Jesus and

  1453. you shall

  1454. be saved

  1455. God offers

  1456. this rest

  1457. and he

  1458. offers it

  1459. to all

  1460. who will

  1461. come to

  1462. him

  1463. and all

  1464. that's

  1465. waiting

  1466. is for

  1467. you to

  1468. actually

  1469. come

  1470. just

  1471. receive it

  1472. the price

  1473. has been

  1474. paid

  1475. it's there

  1476. he says

  1477. come

  1478. all that

  1479. remains for

  1480. you to

  1481. do

  1482. is to

  1483. come

  1484. turn

  1485. start

  1486. trusting

  1487. Jesus

  1488. as the

  1489. Lord

  1490. and Savior

  1491. what do

  1492. we learn

  1493. from the

  1494. off-mail

  1495. cycle

  1496. well

  1497. we learn

  1498. about

  1499. a lot

  1500. about

  1501. who

  1502. God

  1503. is

  1504. we learn

  1505. he's

  1506. holy

  1507. and that

  1508. we're

  1509. not

  1510. we learn

  1511. that he

  1512. does have

  1513. anger

  1514. it's a

  1515. righteous

  1516. anger

  1517. but it's

  1518. anger

  1519. and out

  1520. of that

  1521. anger

  1522. comes

  1523. judgment

  1524. but out

  1525. of the

  1526. same

  1527. God

  1528. that

  1529. comes

  1530. wrath

  1531. comes

  1532. salvation

  1533. a gift

  1534. of grace

  1535. of eternal

  1536. rest

  1537. that we

  1538. can't even

  1539. imagine

  1540. now

  1541. and he

  1542. offers it

  1543. to all

  1544. of us

  1545. out of

  1546. his own

  1547. love

  1548. so why

  1549. not take

  1550. it

  1551. that's

  1552. enough

  1553. for us

  1554. to rejoice

  1555. in today

  1556. isn't it
