  1. Well, if you haven't been around for a couple of weeks, we have reached the Gideon cycle of the book of Judges.

  2. And the amount of detail included by the author at this point really gives us a fantastic opportunity to slow our pace a bit from what we had done in the first few chapters.

  3. It allows us to really examine more thoroughly each individual scene.

  4. And I actually have found that to be quite helpful in my own study, and I hope you find that to be helpful as well as we study these passages together.

  5. Now, we need to recognize that this does pose a particular danger for us to miss the forest for the tree, so to speak.

  6. You ever find yourself doing that in your Bible study?

  7. You get so caught up in the minutia of a particular verse or a particular passage that you end up misinterpreting it because you've lost sight of the bigger picture of what's actually happening and why God has put it there.

  8. So there is a bit of a danger in this.

  9. As we slow down our pace and we look at each individual section here, there is a bit of a danger that we'll lose the big picture and then maybe misinterpret or misapply.

  10. So what we want to do then, as I mentioned to you last week, we want to keep one eye on the big picture of what God is doing in and through Israel,

  11. while we're keeping the other eye on the finer details of what God is doing in and through this man, Gideon.

  12. And as far as Israel is concerned, at this point in the book, they were facing a really quite severe season of oppression from this coalition led by the Midianites.

  13. And we found at the beginning of the chapter that it was because of their idolatry.

  14. God had given them into the hand of Midian, and God was using this disciplinary action as a means to lead his people to repentance.

  15. And we talked about that. We talked about the difference between God's punitive action against unbelievers, those who are outside of the covenant.

  16. And we contrasted that with God's disciplinary corrective action with those who are inside the covenant.

  17. Midian is outside the covenant.

  18. They're going to ultimately be completely decimated by the time we get to the end of this section.

  19. Israel, however, though guilty of the same sin, though just as wicked as Midian themselves,

  20. happen to be inside the covenant, and they receive a different form of judgment from God.

  21. They are not completely destroyed.

  22. Rather, God is disciplining them, and he's using Midian to do it.

  23. And then in his intent to deliver them from their oppression, God has chosen and raised up and is in the process of raising up this man, Gideon,

  24. whom he will use to save his people.

  25. But as we study through this text, we find out very quickly that great men and women of God are not made in a moment.

  26. You don't come to Christ in a moment, and then all of a sudden, you're just as mature and seasoned as any believer who has been saved for a number of years.

  27. That doesn't happen in any of our lives.

  28. It didn't happen in Gideon's life either.

  29. And this section is a helpful reminder of that.

  30. As sinful creatures, God graciously, patiently molds and shapes us into vessels fit for his use.

  31. And that's exactly what we see happening step by step in the life of Gideon.

  32. Now, last week, I likened the verses, verses 11 through 24, to something of a conversion experience for Gideon.

  33. And again, I recognize that we need to be careful when assigning New Testament realities to Old Testament narratives,

  34. using gospel language in places where the gospel has not yet been presented, at least in its fullest form.

  35. Jesus has not yet come at this point.

  36. We need to recognize that.

  37. Gideon himself would have no possible concept of the cross or of the resurrection.

  38. So, when I talk about a conversion experience, I'm not saying that what Gideon experienced in this moment looks exactly as what you and I might experience.

  39. But, what we do find in those verses is all of the components of biblical conversion being presented.

  40. You remember back to what we studied last week.

  41. He was confronted by the Word of God through the messenger of God.

  42. Paul tells us that same thing happens with us.

  43. In Romans chapter 10, he says,

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  44. Faith comes by hearing.

  45. Hearing comes by the Word of God.

  46. In other words, if you are to be saved, you're going to be saved through the preaching of God's Word,

  47. the preaching of God's truth, and the confrontation of God's Word through God's messenger.

  48. Whether that be a preacher on a Sunday morning,

  49. whether it be a co-worker who has courage to share the gospel with you.

  50. We see that happening in Gideon's life.

  51. He understood the reality of his sinfulness in light of the holiness of God.

  52. When he finally comes to terms with the fact that he's before the messenger of God,

  53. remember what he says,

  54. Alas, O Lord!

  55. He thinks he's going to die because he's seen God's angel face to face.

  56. He recognizes his sinfulness.

  57. He cries out for mercy.

  58. And then he experiences the incomprehensible grace of God.

  59. As the Lord says,

  60. Peace be to you, Gideon.

  61. You shall not die.

  62. Remember what he said.

  63. And that immediately results in genuine worship.

  64. And all of these things are part and parcel of what it means to be converted.

  65. It's biblical conversion.

  66. Gideon's, the work of God's grace happening prior to the coming of Christ.

  67. And then for us, of course,

  68. these components take the shape of the gospel of Jesus Christ in our lives.

  69. And so we're going to continue on with that thought.

  70. If verses 11 through 24 give us something of a parallel of biblical conversion,

  71. what we find happening in the text that I just read

  72. Gideon parallels what we might call the first steps of life for a new believer.

  73. Just think about what we just read.

  74. After his transformative moment with God in verse 23 and 24,

  75. Gideon was quickly thrust into this daunting situation, wasn't he?

  76. His commitment to the Lord set him against the traditions and beliefs of his own family and community.

  77. And it becomes immediately relevant.

  78. What God commanded him to do not only tested his faith,

  79. it was actually an essential move in declaring the message of repentance and salvation

  80. that God intended for his people to hear and understand.

  81. And so what I want to do this morning is just walk you through this text,

  82. and we want to note what is revealed for us about God and salvation,

  83. and then, of course, also the progressive work of sanctification for those of us

  84. who do experience the grace of God and salvation.

  85. Okay, so that's kind of the roadmap that we're following.

  86. First thing I want you to notice is an initial task.

  87. An initial task.

  88. Look at verse 25.

  89. That night the Lord said to him,

  90. Take your father's bull and the second bull, seven years old,

  91. pull down the altar of Baal that your father has,

  92. cut down the asherah that's beside it,

  93. and build an altar to the Lord your God on the top of the stronghold here,

  94. with stones laid in due order.

  95. Then take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering

  96. with the wood of the asherah that you shall cut down.

  97. So what we find here with Gideon is that the Lord wastes no time

  98. in activating him in his plan and in his purposes.

  99. On the very night that he experiences God's peace

  100. and enjoyed this moment of genuine worship,

  101. God gave him a task that would send an unmistakable message

  102. to his family and his community.

  103. It's an immediate task that God lays on him.

  104. We're reminded with this that the call to trust and obey God

  105. demands immediate engagement.

  106. Engagement for God and against his enemies.

  107. There's really no buffer.

  108. Sometimes we expect that that would happen,

  109. that when someone comes to Christ,

  110. they kind of get a few moments to collect their breath,

  111. and they can just kind of go into the backside of the desert somewhere

  112. as we see some biblical characters and kind of be trained up.

  113. And then once they're ready, God calls them into making their faith.

  114. But that's not how actually it works.

  115. It didn't happen for Gideon that way.

  116. It doesn't happen for us that way.

  117. And if you're only now coming to Christ in genuine faith,

  118. it's not going to happen for you that way either.

  119. God requires immediate engagement,

  120. like a pebble in a slingshot.

  121. Conversion instantly catapults us into a life that is decidedly

  122. and dynamically different than what we've ever experienced before.

  123. It takes no time at all for our commitment to Christ to be tested

  124. and for God to put us in a position that demands we make our faith known.

  125. Perhaps you can even recall back to your own conversion,

  126. maybe the excitement of that,

  127. and then immediately getting into a place with your friends

  128. or your family or your coworkers

  129. where it's going to be necessary for you to make that known,

  130. whether it's through an explanation of why you won't do the things

  131. that you were doing just the day before or the week before,

  132. or why you won't behave a particular way,

  133. or maybe it's just the sharing of that gospel message,

  134. and immediately you're thrust into this awkward and intimidating position

  135. of standing for God and against those who are his enemies.

  136. And that's what's happening with Gideon.

  137. His initial task was to destroy the community shrine to Baal and Ashtaroth.

  138. And what makes it even more complex for him

  139. is the fact that this particular altar for Baal was his dad's.

  140. His own father had sponsored and built it

  141. and was probably, as we get a sense in this text,

  142. was probably Joash was functioning as something of a priest to Baal

  143. on behalf of the people of the town.

  144. Then he was to build an altar in its place.

  145. He was to sacrifice his father's bull as a burnt offering to Yahweh.

  146. And in one sense, as we read through this,

  147. what God asked for Gideon to do here

  148. was more difficult than the large-scale war

  149. against the Midianites that we're going to see in chapter 7.

  150. It's one thing to work against a common enemy

  151. for the people who are closest to you and your family and community,

  152. for everybody to kind of, in unity together,

  153. recognize Midian is bad.

  154. Midian is hurting us.

  155. Midian has to be dealt with.

  156. That's one thing.

  157. It's quite another thing

  158. to set yourself against your own family and friends,

  159. to perform some type of action

  160. or to declare some kind of message

  161. that actually says,

  162. no, not only is Midian bad,

  163. but you're bad.

  164. You're the problem.

  165. That's hard.

  166. Sharing Romans chapter 3 with a stranger at Costco

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  167. is pretty easy to do.

  168. Sharing Romans chapter 3 with your wife

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  169. or your husband or your parents

  170. or your grown children

  171. is not quite so easy to do.

  172. That's what we find happening with Gideon.

  173. This task was vitally important

  174. to the work that God was doing,

  175. not only in Israel,

  176. but in Gideon himself.

  177. It was a visual demonstration

  178. of the sermon preached by the prophet

  179. in verses 8 through 10.

  180. Remember, that was from a couple of weeks ago

  181. as God sends this prophet

  182. before he sends a deliverer

  183. and he declares a message of salvation

  184. through repentance.

  185. Well, what God is having Gideon to do

  186. in this moment

  187. is a visual demonstration

  188. of that same message.

  189. The people needed to understand

  190. that the oppression from Midian

  191. was only an indicator

  192. of a much deeper problem.

  193. Their circumstance was not the result

  194. of Midian's power,

  195. but their own idolatry.

  196. And as long as they continued

  197. in that idolatry,

  198. their circumstances were only going to

  199. worsen.

  200. God might deliver them from Midian,

  201. but there's just going to be another enemy

  202. that comes along the way.

  203. And that's exactly what happens

  204. in this book.

  205. Over and over and over,

  206. God is gracious

  207. and the people continue

  208. and persist in their idolatry

  209. and so their condition

  210. never ultimately gets better.

  211. They continue to struggle

  212. beneath this oppression.

  213. Why such a demand for Gideon,

  214. asked Del Ralph Davis.

  215. Because two altars cannot coexist

  216. side by side.

  217. You cannot have an altar to Yahweh

  218. and an altar to Baal.

  219. They're mutually exclusive,

  220. he says.

  221. And what we find is

  222. this entire episode here

  223. amounts to God's demand

  224. for repentance.

  225. The repentance without which

  226. you cannot be saved.

  227. That's the message here.

  228. Not just to the people of Ophrah,

  229. but to the entire nation of Israel.

  230. Let's think about that

  231. for just a moment,

  232. this dynamic of repentance.

  233. What does it actually mean?

  234. Well, the word itself

  235. means to make a turn, right?

  236. It means to turn from one direction

  237. and go in a different direction.

  238. And repentance unto salvation

  239. in the Bible

  240. really has two parts

  241. and we see them demonstrated here

  242. in this story.

  243. First, repentance requires

  244. that you turn away

  245. from sin and unbelief.

  246. You turn away

  247. from sin and unbelief.

  248. It wasn't enough

  249. for Gideon to simply

  250. build an altar to God.

  251. That wasn't enough.

  252. Baal's altar, the Asherah,

  253. which would have been

  254. a wooden post next to Baal

  255. that represented the worship

  256. of Ashtaroth,

  257. which was believed

  258. to be Baal's female consort.

  259. Okay, we talked about that

  260. in another passage.

  261. But basically,

  262. the way this would have been set up

  263. is an altar to Baal

  264. and then right next to it

  265. is this large wooden post

  266. that represented

  267. Baal's wife, essentially.

  268. And both things

  269. were involved

  270. in the pagan worship of Baal.

  271. Both Baal and the Asherah,

  272. they both had to be destroyed.

  273. It wouldn't be enough

  274. for Gideon

  275. just to build an altar

  276. to God next to it

  277. and sacrifice his bull.

  278. He could do all

  279. of those other things

  280. and it wouldn't have been

  281. the message

  282. that God intended.

  283. It wouldn't have been

  284. a message of repentance

  285. unto salvation.

  286. Baal had to be destroyed.

  287. The second requirement

  288. of true repentance

  289. is a decisive turning

  290. to the true God.

  291. So Gideon was not only

  292. to tear down the altar

  293. to Baal,

  294. he was to build

  295. in its place

  296. an altar to Yahweh,

  297. the Lord God.

  298. And to obey God's command,

  299. Gideon had to perform

  300. both actions.

  301. Turning away from sin

  302. and unbelief,

  303. not just to rid yourself

  304. of that particular thing,

  305. but to decisively turn

  306. to the true worship

  307. of Yahweh.

  308. Yahwehism,

  309. if we want to call it that

  310. in the Old Testament.

  311. In fact,

  312. to leave out

  313. one of these facets

  314. of repentance

  315. would have completely

  316. distorted the message

  317. of salvation

  318. that God was sending

  319. to Israel.

  320. Their whole problem,

  321. the reason they were

  322. facing the judgment

  323. of God

  324. was because of their sin.

  325. So if Gideon had stood

  326. up as a leader

  327. and attempted to be

  328. a spiritual leader

  329. and said,

  330. you know what?

  331. We're going to worship

  332. God on Sunday.

  333. And we're going to do

  334. the Sunday thing

  335. and we're going to go

  336. to church and we're going

  337. to sing the songs

  338. and say the prayers

  339. and all that stuff.

  340. But he doesn't deal

  341. with all the bells

  342. that are in his house

  343. from Monday to Saturday.

  344. Then it's not

  345. the message of salvation.

  346. It's not repentance.

  347. Because the altar

  348. to Baal

  349. and the altar

  350. to God

  351. cannot coexist together.

  352. You cannot claim

  353. Christianity

  354. on one hand

  355. and bow to Baal

  356. on the other hand

  357. and expect that God

  358. will bless you

  359. with gracious salvation

  360. in response to that.

  361. He will not.

  362. What Gideon does here

  363. is vastly important.

  364. God also requires

  365. this repentance

  366. for our salvation.

  367. It wasn't just for Israel.

  368. In Luke chapter 13,

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  369. Jesus himself says

  370. to a group of Jews,

  371. unless you repent,

  372. you will all perish,

  373. he says.

  374. Unless you do spiritually

  375. what Gideon does physically,

  376. you will die.

  377. Eternal hell,

  378. Jesus says.

  379. In Luke 24,

  380. after his resurrection,

  381. Jesus says this

  382. to his disciples.

  383. Thus it is written

  384. that the Christ

  385. should suffer

  386. and on the third day

  387. rise from the dead

  388. and that repentance

  389. for the forgiveness

  390. of sins

  391. should be proclaimed

  392. in his name

  393. to all nations.

  394. In other words,

  395. with the gospel message,

  396. what's part and parcel

  397. to that?

  398. How does somebody

  399. receive forgiveness

  400. of sins?

  401. Jesus says,

  402. preach the gospel

  403. of Jesus

  404. and repentance

  405. for the forgiveness

  406. of sins.

  407. It's necessary.

  408. And then when it came

  409. time for the apostles

  410. to actually preach

  411. that message

  412. in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  413. this is what we read.

  414. When they heard

  415. the gospel,

  416. they were cut

  417. to the heart

  418. and they said

  419. to Peter

  420. and the rest

  421. of the apostles,

  422. brothers,

  423. what shall we do?

  424. And Peter said

  425. to them,

  426. repent

  427. and be baptized

  428. every one of you

  429. in the name of Jesus

  430. for the forgiveness

  431. of your sins

  432. and you will receive

  433. the gift of the Spirit.

  434. Repentance

  435. is absolutely necessary

  436. for salvation.

  437. Without it,

  438. you cannot be saved.

  439. And the repentance

  440. unto salvation,

  441. genuine,

  442. true repentance,

  443. requires the same

  444. two elements

  445. represented by Gideon's task.

  446. It is a turning away

  447. from sin

  448. and unbelief

  449. in order that you may

  450. genuinely turn to

  451. Christ,

  452. Lord and Savior.

  453. without both features,

  454. you have not truly

  455. repented unto salvation.

  456. And to leave

  457. one facet of it

  458. out of your gospel

  459. preaching and evangelism

  460. is to distort

  461. the gospel message.

  462. It doesn't make sense

  463. without tearing down

  464. Baal's altar

  465. in order to build

  466. the Lord's.

  467. And it is worth

  468. a note of clarification

  469. here of

  470. what it actually means

  471. to repent of your sin.

  472. We are not talking

  473. about getting out

  474. a piece of notebook paper

  475. and listing all the bad

  476. things you have ever

  477. done in your life.

  478. And then praying

  479. through that list

  480. and saying,

  481. Lord,

  482. you know,

  483. when I was 16

  484. I did this really

  485. stupid thing

  486. and I disobeyed

  487. my parents

  488. and I snuck out

  489. of my house.

  490. Lord,

  491. forgive me for that,

  492. please.

  493. I won't do that again.

  494. And you check that

  495. off the list.

  496. And then you move

  497. down to the next.

  498. Well,

  499. Lord,

  500. there was also

  501. this time

  502. that I looked

  503. at things

  504. on the computer

  505. I shouldn't have

  506. looked at.

  507. I never told

  508. my wife about it

  509. but it is on my mind

  510. now.

  511. And so,

  512. that's not repentance.

  513. That's not what

  514. we're talking about.

  515. That's remorse.

  516. That may be necessary

  517. to some extent

  518. but that's not

  519. what we're talking

  520. about with genuine

  521. repentance.

  522. We're talking about

  523. not a checklist.

  524. We're talking about

  525. a disposition of heart,

  526. a change of heart.

  527. We're on one hand

  528. thinking more broadly.

  529. We are pursuing

  530. the world.

  531. We're pursuing self.

  532. We're saying,

  533. I'm going to do

  534. my thing

  535. and I'm going to

  536. do it my way

  537. and no one's going

  538. to tell me any different

  539. and we're finally saying,

  540. no, I'm surrendering

  541. all of that.

  542. Everything that I am,

  543. my identity,

  544. all of my desires,

  545. everything that I want

  546. out of this life,

  547. everything that I want

  548. to do,

  549. I'm setting all

  550. of that aside.

  551. I'm turning away

  552. from that

  553. in order that I might

  554. turn to Jesus Christ

  555. my Lord and Savior.

  556. I'm going to trust Him

  557. as the propitiation

  558. for those sins

  559. and now I'm going

  560. to follow Him

  561. as Lord

  562. which means

  563. all of these desires

  564. that I had over here

  565. are now submitted

  566. to His Lordship.

  567. And that means

  568. one day

  569. you're going

  570. to sit down

  571. after you come

  572. to Christ

  573. you're going

  574. to open your Bible

  575. maybe six,

  576. twenty,

  577. thirty years later

  578. and you're going

  579. to read a passage

  580. of Scripture

  581. and the Lord's

  582. going to bring up

  583. something in your life

  584. and He's going

  585. to point on your heart

  586. and He's going

  587. to say,

  588. this is it,

  589. you're disobeying

  590. me in this way.

  591. Genuine repentance

  592. is the disposition

  593. of heart that says,

  594. this is hard for me

  595. to read and it's hard

  596. for me to hear

  597. but the Lord Jesus,

  598. He's my Savior,

  599. He's my Lord.

  600. I surrender

  601. what I want to Him.

  602. That's what we're

  603. talking about

  604. with genuine repentance

  605. here.

  606. We're not talking

  607. about checklists.

  608. We're talking

  609. about something

  610. much deeper

  611. than that.

  612. A heart level

  613. transformation

  614. that comes

  615. as a result

  616. of the grace

  617. of God

  618. at work

  619. in our lives.

  620. Let's look

  621. at verse 27.

  622. This kind of

  623. concludes this

  624. particular portion

  625. of it,

  626. the task.

  627. Notice what

  628. Gideon did.

  629. Gideon took

  630. ten men

  631. of his servants

  632. and did

  633. as the Lord

  634. had told him.

  635. But because

  636. he was too afraid

  637. of his family

  638. and the men

  639. of the town

  640. to do it by day,

  641. he did it by night.

  642. A common

  643. misconception

  644. of the Bible

  645. is that it's

  646. a book of heroes.

  647. The Bible's

  648. not a book

  649. of heroes.

  650. In fact,

  651. there's only one

  652. hero in the Bible

  653. and that's

  654. the Lord Jesus.

  655. No one else

  656. qualifies.

  657. In fact,

  658. if you pay

  659. attention as you

  660. read,

  661. you'll realize

  662. very quickly

  663. that all of

  664. these people

  665. are profoundly

  666. flawed

  667. and weak,

  668. underwhelming

  669. even.

  670. And Gideon's

  671. no exception

  672. to that,

  673. is he?

  674. This verse

  675. reveals,

  676. once again,

  677. just how relatable

  678. he is

  679. to most people.

  680. He's prone

  681. to fear.

  682. He's in

  683. constant need

  684. of reassurance.

  685. But then he

  686. also shows

  687. this tremendous

  688. faith in this

  689. moment,

  690. doesn't he?

  691. How does

  692. he show

  693. faith?

  694. He's scared.

  695. He does it

  696. at night.

  697. He's afraid

  698. for people

  699. to see him.

  700. He's afraid

  701. to be known.

  702. How does

  703. he actually

  704. show faith?

  705. He obeys

  706. God in

  707. spite of

  708. that fear.

  709. That's the

  710. key here.

  711. Only those

  712. of us with

  713. a perfect

  714. faith should

  715. feel comfortable

  716. coming down

  717. hard on

  718. Gideon for

  719. doing this

  720. at night.

  721. this is a

  722. cast the first

  723. stone kind

  724. of situation

  725. where we

  726. come to a

  727. passage like

  728. this and

  729. we think,

  730. man,

  731. Gideon,

  732. come on,

  733. man,

  734. pull yourself

  735. up a little

  736. bit.

  737. He's so

  738. scared.

  739. You wouldn't

  740. be scared.

  741. Of course

  742. you would.

  743. You know

  744. what true

  745. faith is?

  746. Obeying

  747. God when

  748. you're scared.

  749. Yes,

  750. he should

  751. have trusted

  752. more confidently

  753. in God's

  754. promises.

  755. But let's

  756. not ignore

  757. the fact

  758. that he

  759. still performed

  760. a task

  761. most of us

  762. would be

  763. unwilling to

  764. do.

  765. Gideon

  766. knew his

  767. life was

  768. on the line

  769. with this.

  770. We often

  771. falter under

  772. the threat

  773. of far less

  774. severe consequences

  775. than what

  776. Gideon was

  777. under here.

  778. Let's give

  779. the man a

  780. break for

  781. just a second

  782. and acknowledge

  783. and rejoice

  784. in the fact

  785. that he

  786. obeyed the

  787. Lord.

  788. We should

  789. be encouraged

  790. by that.

  791. Faith is

  792. not the

  793. absence of

  794. fear as

  795. many have

  796. defined it

  797. wrongly.

  798. Faith is

  799. trusting and

  800. obeying God

  801. even when you

  802. are completely

  803. filled with

  804. fear.

  805. Fortunately

  806. for us

  807. and fortunately

  808. for Gideon,

  809. God doesn't

  810. require heroism.

  811. He just

  812. requires

  813. obedience.

  814. And that's

  815. what we see

  816. in Gideon.

  817. We should

  818. read this

  819. text and

  820. remember

  821. again that

  822. it's not

  823. the strength

  824. of our

  825. faith that

  826. ultimately

  827. matters.

  828. It's the

  829. object of

  830. that faith.

  831. And the

  832. object of

  833. our faith

  834. will get

  835. the job

  836. done.

  837. We should

  838. take comfort

  839. in the fact

  840. even that

  841. God is so

  842. patient and

  843. merciful with

  844. Gideon's

  845. weakness here,

  846. isn't it?

  847. It's funny,

  848. we come to

  849. texts like

  850. this and we

  851. want to

  852. condemn people

  853. like Gideon

  854. when God

  855. doesn't even

  856. do that.

  857. There's no

  858. correction of

  859. Gideon here.

  860. Just a simple

  861. statement.

  862. He does it

  863. at night.

  864. This was

  865. tremendous

  866. faith.

  867. This is why

  868. Hebrews 11

  869. says Gideon

  870. is somebody

  871. we need to

  872. look to

  873. as an

  874. example of

  875. faith.

  876. That's the

  877. initial task.

  878. Second,

  879. let's see

  880. an incensed

  881. mob.

  882. An incensed

  883. mob.

  884. 28,

  885. when the

  886. men of the

  887. town rose

  888. early in

  889. the morning,

  890. behold,

  891. the altar

  892. of Baal

  893. was broken

  894. down.

  895. The

  896. Asherah

  897. beside it

  898. was cut

  899. down.

  900. The second

  901. bull was

  902. offered on

  903. the altar

  904. that had

  905. been built.

  906. And they

  907. said one

  908. to another,

  909. who has

  910. done this

  911. thing?

  912. After they

  913. had searched

  914. and inquired,

  915. they said,

  916. Gideon,

  917. the son of

  918. Joash,

  919. has done

  920. this.

  921. And the

  922. men of

  923. the town

  924. said to

  925. Joash,

  926. bring out

  927. your son

  928. that he

  929. may die,

  930. for he's

  931. broken down

  932. the altar

  933. of Baal

  934. and cut

  935. down the

  936. Asherah

  937. beside it.

  938. They want

  939. Gideon

  940. dead.

  941. So then

  942. Gideon's

  943. fears are

  944. realized the

  945. very next

  946. morning.

  947. People of

  948. the town

  949. wake up,

  950. they realize

  951. what's

  952. happened,

  953. they immediately

  954. begin to

  955. inquire as

  956. to who is

  957. responsible,

  958. and when they

  959. find out that

  960. it's Gideon,

  961. they stand

  962. outside of

  963. Gideon's

  964. father's

  965. house,

  966. and they

  967. say you

  968. need to

  969. send out

  970. your son

  971. because it's

  972. time for

  973. him to

  974. die.

  975. Look at

  976. what he

  977. did.

  978. His faith

  979. in and

  980. obedience to

  981. God set

  982. him at

  983. odds with

  984. his family

  985. and community,

  986. and they

  987. were out

  988. for blood.

  989. That's

  990. terrifying.

  991. Sometimes

  992. the gospel

  993. message is

  994. unhelpfully

  995. presented to

  996. us in an

  997. idealized

  998. form,

  999. and people

  1000. come and

  1001. they're told

  1002. that if they

  1003. just come to

  1004. Christ,

  1005. things are

  1006. going to

  1007. get better,

  1008. and we

  1009. convince

  1010. ourselves

  1011. sometimes

  1012. that if

  1013. we do

  1014. what's

  1015. right and

  1016. we say

  1017. what's

  1018. right,

  1019. that the

  1020. people around

  1021. us are

  1022. going to

  1023. be very

  1024. respectful of

  1025. that,

  1026. and they're

  1027. just going

  1028. to admire

  1029. our

  1030. conviction,

  1031. and that

  1032. is not at

  1033. all what

  1034. happens.

  1035. That's not at

  1036. all what

  1037. happens.

  1038. That's not

  1039. what happened

  1040. for Gideon

  1041. either.

  1042. That's why

  1043. the first test

  1044. of faith for

  1045. a young

  1046. believer is

  1047. often to deal

  1048. with vehement

  1049. opposition from

  1050. people that

  1051. we actually

  1052. care deeply

  1053. about being

  1054. accepted by.

  1055. Like mom

  1056. and dad,

  1057. and the

  1058. family that's

  1059. around us,

  1060. and the

  1061. community of

  1062. friends that

  1063. we've developed

  1064. over time,

  1065. and our

  1066. coworkers.

  1067. We want to

  1068. be accepted

  1069. by these

  1070. people.

  1071. We want to

  1072. be included

  1073. by these

  1074. people,

  1075. and loved

  1076. by these

  1077. people.

  1078. And yet

  1079. our new

  1080. faith in

  1081. Jesus Christ

  1082. often sets us

  1083. in opposition

  1084. to them.

  1085. And those

  1086. relationships,

  1087. and those

  1088. blessings are

  1089. then at

  1090. risk.

  1091. the call

  1092. to discipleship

  1093. is a public

  1094. identification

  1095. with Jesus

  1096. that will

  1097. always,

  1098. always put

  1099. us at odds

  1100. with the

  1101. world.

  1102. That's the

  1103. thing.

  1104. And we

  1105. know it

  1106. will always

  1107. do that

  1108. because that's

  1109. what Jesus

  1110. said it

  1111. would do.

  1112. Remember

  1113. his words

  1114. in Luke

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  1115. chapter 9.

  1116. Jesus says,

  1117. if anyone

  1118. would come

  1119. after me,

  1120. in other

  1121. words,

  1122. if anyone

  1123. will follow

  1124. me,

  1125. be my

  1126. disciple,

  1127. trusting

  1128. me for

  1129. salvation,

  1130. if anyone

  1131. will come

  1132. after me,

  1133. let him

  1134. deny himself,

  1135. repent,

  1136. take up

  1137. his cross

  1138. daily,

  1139. follow me.

  1140. What is

  1141. that all

  1142. about?

  1143. The cross

  1144. for them

  1145. is a

  1146. symbol of

  1147. death.

  1148. In other

  1149. words,

  1150. Jesus says,

  1151. come prepared

  1152. to die.

  1153. Come prepared

  1154. to die.

  1155. Identifying

  1156. with my

  1157. cross,

  1158. identifying

  1159. with me

  1160. will bring

  1161. great

  1162. hardship.

  1163. And if

  1164. you're going

  1165. to come

  1166. after me,

  1167. you need

  1168. to be

  1169. prepared

  1170. for that.

  1171. You need

  1172. to be

  1173. prepared

  1174. to do

  1175. that.

  1176. Jesus

  1177. also

  1178. warned

  1179. that

  1180. belief

  1181. in

  1182. and

  1183. faithfulness

  1184. to

  1185. his

  1186. gospel

  1187. runs

  1188. the

  1189. risk

  1190. of

  1191. being

  1192. persecuted

  1193. even

  1194. by one's

  1195. family.

  1196. Matthew

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  1197. chapter 10,

  1198. brother will

  1199. deliver brother

  1200. over to

  1201. death,

  1202. Jesus says,

  1203. and the

  1204. father,

  1205. his child,

  1206. and children

  1207. will rise

  1208. against parents

  1209. and have

  1210. them put

  1211. to death,

  1212. and you

  1213. will be

  1214. hated by

  1215. all

  1216. for my

  1217. name's

  1218. sake.

  1219. God

  1220. will

  1221. be

  1222. saved.

  1223. This

  1224. brings

  1225. further

  1226. light to

  1227. Gideon's

  1228. faithfulness

  1229. in spite

  1230. of his

  1231. fear.

  1232. A

  1233. fundamental

  1234. conviction

  1235. of a

  1236. true

  1237. Christian

  1238. is to

  1239. fear God

  1240. more than

  1241. man.

  1242. It is to

  1243. desire the

  1244. pleasure and

  1245. glory of

  1246. God

  1247. more than

  1248. the acceptance

  1249. of this

  1250. world.

  1251. It is to

  1252. lose one's

  1253. life for

  1254. the life

  1255. that Christ

  1256. offers.

  1257. If following

  1258. Jesus and

  1259. standing for

  1260. his gospel

  1261. meant that

  1262. your family

  1263. would disown

  1264. you,

  1265. would you

  1266. still follow

  1267. him?

  1268. What if

  1269. that's what

  1270. was at

  1271. risk for

  1272. you?

  1273. Would you

  1274. still do

  1275. it?

  1276. What if

  1277. your kids

  1278. decided,

  1279. as long as

  1280. you're going

  1281. to do this

  1282. whole Christian

  1283. thing,

  1284. you're not

  1285. going to

  1286. have me,

  1287. I'm going

  1288. to have

  1289. nothing to

  1290. do with

  1291. you anymore?

  1292. What if

  1293. it was

  1294. the vice

  1295. versa and

  1296. your parents

  1297. say,

  1298. you know

  1299. what,

  1300. if you're

  1301. going to

  1302. continue on

  1303. this Christian

  1304. thing,

  1305. you're going

  1306. to have to

  1307. find another

  1308. place to

  1309. live because

  1310. I'm not

  1311. going to

  1312. tolerate it

  1313. in my

  1314. house.

  1315. Is

  1316. Jesus still

  1317. worth it

  1318. even then?

  1319. Is

  1320. Jesus still

  1321. worth it

  1322. when it

  1323. comes with

  1324. the risk

  1325. of losing

  1326. really close

  1327. friendships?

  1328. What about

  1329. your business

  1330. and your

  1331. work and

  1332. your ability

  1333. to climb the

  1334. ladder in your

  1335. business?

  1336. What if it

  1337. even means

  1338. your life?

  1339. Is Jesus

  1340. still worth

  1341. it?

  1342. Jesus

  1343. continues in

  1344. Matthew 10,

  1345. whoever loves

  1346. father and

  1347. mother more

  1348. than me is

  1349. not worthy

  1350. of me.

  1351. Whoever

  1352. loves son or

  1353. daughter more

  1354. than me is

  1355. not worthy

  1356. of me.

  1357. Whoever

  1358. does not

  1359. take up his

  1360. cross and

  1361. follow me is

  1362. not worthy

  1363. of me.

  1364. Whoever

  1365. finds his

  1366. life will lose

  1367. it, Jesus

  1368. said, and

  1369. whoever loses

  1370. his life for

  1371. my sake will

  1372. find it.

  1373. Gideon was

  1374. faced immediately

  1375. the very next

  1376. day with that

  1377. exact predicament

  1378. and we don't

  1379. need to be

  1380. surprised when

  1381. it's a

  1382. predicament that

  1383. we face as

  1384. well.

  1385. Why do you

  1386. suppose the

  1387. people had

  1388. such a strong

  1389. reaction?

  1390. The Torah

  1391. sentence, the

  1392. law of Moses

  1393. that is, the

  1394. sentence for

  1395. idolatry was

  1396. now being

  1397. pronounced on

  1398. the one who

  1399. destroyed the

  1400. idol.

  1401. It's completely

  1402. reversed now,

  1403. isn't it?

  1404. Shows just how

  1405. severe the

  1406. spiritual decline

  1407. in Israel had

  1408. become.

  1409. They were now

  1410. thoroughly

  1411. Canaanized and

  1412. were sentencing

  1413. the righteous

  1414. one for his

  1415. righteousness.

  1416. righteousness.

  1417. How wonderfully

  1418. amazing that

  1419. God was still

  1420. interested and

  1421. intent on

  1422. delivering them.

  1423. Isn't that

  1424. amazing?

  1425. The people in

  1426. Gideon's community

  1427. are not Gentile

  1428. people.

  1429. These aren't

  1430. Canaanites.

  1431. These are

  1432. Israelites.

  1433. The very people

  1434. that should have

  1435. been supporting

  1436. him in this

  1437. endeavor are the

  1438. ones that are

  1439. now calling for

  1440. his life.

  1441. Why?

  1442. Because he was

  1443. faithful to the

  1444. God that they

  1445. supposedly belong

  1446. to?

  1447. And yet God

  1448. still comes in

  1449. and the whole

  1450. time what he's

  1451. doing is he's

  1452. raising up Gideon

  1453. in order that he

  1454. might deliver the

  1455. people that are

  1456. calling for Gideon

  1457. to be murdered.

  1458. What love is

  1459. that?

  1460. What grace is

  1461. that?

  1462. that?

  1463. If you want to

  1464. see yourself in

  1465. any of the people

  1466. in this passage

  1467. probably best not

  1468. to look at Gideon.

  1469. Probably best to

  1470. look at the people

  1471. of the town.

  1472. You want to

  1473. understand God's

  1474. love for you in

  1475. salvation.

  1476. Look at God's

  1477. intent to save

  1478. them despite their

  1479. vehemence against

  1480. his man.

  1481. Isn't that the

  1482. picture of the

  1483. cross that we

  1484. see?

  1485. We sing songs

  1486. about it.

  1487. City of Light

  1488. has a great song

  1489. about this called

  1490. Jerusalem where

  1491. it walks through

  1492. the different

  1493. scenes of the

  1494. crucifixion and

  1495. it talks about

  1496. Jesus being

  1497. nailed to a

  1498. cross by the

  1499. very people that

  1500. he came to

  1501. save.

  1502. In that exact

  1503. moment of

  1504. death and

  1505. treachery the

  1506. whole point of

  1507. it is to save

  1508. the people who

  1509. are doing it.

  1510. What grace is

  1511. this?

  1512. What love?

  1513. It's possible

  1514. that the people

  1515. are enraged

  1516. here because

  1517. they were

  1518. fearful of being

  1519. under a curse

  1520. from Baal.

  1521. They are

  1522. Baalites for

  1523. sure.

  1524. And how ironic

  1525. that they would

  1526. fear the wrath

  1527. of a God that

  1528. doesn't even

  1529. exist more than

  1530. they feared the

  1531. wrath of the

  1532. true God who

  1533. had proven

  1534. himself to

  1535. them time and

  1536. time again.

  1537. But the

  1538. vehemence against

  1539. Gideon really

  1540. just reflects the

  1541. fact that we

  1542. love our sin.

  1543. We love our

  1544. sin and we

  1545. hate anyone who

  1546. would try to

  1547. stand in the way

  1548. of us getting

  1549. what we want and

  1550. living the way we

  1551. want to live.

  1552. We hate those

  1553. people.

  1554. John says it

  1555. this way in

  1556. John chapter

    John 3 chapter mention

  1557. 3.

  1558. He's interpreting

  1559. Jesus' exchange

  1560. with Nicodemus in

  1561. John 3 and he

  1562. interprets it this

  1563. way.

  1564. He says,

  1565. This is the

  1566. judgment.

  1567. The light has

  1568. come into the

  1569. world and people

  1570. loved darkness

  1571. rather than the

  1572. light because their

  1573. works were evil.

  1574. For everyone who

  1575. does wicked things

  1576. hates the light and

  1577. does not come to

  1578. the light lest his

  1579. work should be

  1580. exposed.

  1581. But whoever does

  1582. what is true comes

  1583. to the light so

  1584. that it may be

  1585. clearly seen that

  1586. his works have

  1587. been carried out

  1588. in God.

  1589. Watch John

  1590. getting on out

  1591. with that.

  1592. What's your

  1593. typical response

  1594. when somebody

  1595. confronts you in

  1596. your sin?

  1597. John says that

  1598. the wicked in

  1599. heart despise

  1600. light because it

  1601. exposes that their

  1602. works are evil.

  1603. They don't like to

  1604. be told that

  1605. they're sinners.

  1606. They don't like to

  1607. be told that

  1608. their works are

  1609. evil, that they're

  1610. set up against

  1611. God.

  1612. People don't like

  1613. to go to church.

  1614. You're unbelieving

  1615. friends.

  1616. Don't be surprised

  1617. when you invite

  1618. them to a service.

  1619. They don't want to

  1620. come here.

  1621. They know when

  1622. they come that the

  1623. light exposes the

  1624. darkness and we

  1625. love our sin.

  1626. We love the darkness

  1627. more than we love

  1628. the light.

  1629. But then John

  1630. continues on.

  1631. Those who care for

  1632. their lives to

  1633. reflect the glory of

  1634. God.

  1635. They love the light.

  1636. They love the light

  1637. of God's truth

  1638. because they desire

1639. to do what is true

  1640. and right.

  1641. It's painful, but

  1642. they're not afraid

  1643. for the light to

  1644. expose their

  1645. wickedness because

  1646. that means that

  1647. they're going to

  1648. move forward in

  1649. glory, forward in

  1650. glorifying the

  1651. Lord.

  1652. Just as Gideon's

  1653. actions expose the

  1654. wickedness of his

  1655. community, so does a

  1656. confrontation of God's

  1657. word expose what's

  1658. really in our hearts

  1659. as well.

  1660. So that when we

  1661. come to church Sunday

  1662. by Sunday and we

  1663. see the passages that

  1664. are read and we

1665. read them or we hear

  1666. their sermons, whoever

  1667. it may be that's

  1668. preaching, and we're

  1669. confronted in our sin,

  1670. what's our response to

  1671. that?

1672. Do we want to run

  1673. away from the light?

  1674. That would be an

  1675. indicator that your

  1676. heart is wicked.

  1677. There's wickedness

  1678. there.

  1679. You don't actually

1680. have a true desire to

  1681. please the Lord.

1682. Or do we love the

  1683. pain?

  1684. Hurt so good,

  1685. right?

  1686. Because we know

  1687. what's happening

  1688. there.

  1689. The Lord is

  1690. transforming us.

  1691. He's sanctifying us.

  1692. He's exposing our

1693. sin in order that he

  1694. may reveal more of

  1695. his light.

  1696. An incensed mob.

  1697. Thirdly and finally,

  1698. we see an illuminating

  1699. conclusion.

  1700. An illuminating or

  1701. clarifying conclusion.

  1702. Verse 31,

1703. Joash said to all who

  1704. stood against him,

  1705. will you contend for

  1706. Baal?

  1707. Will you save him?

  1708. Whoever contends for

1709. him shall be put to

  1710. death by morning.

  1711. If he's a god,

  1712. let him contend for

  1713. himself, because his

  1714. altar has been broken

  1715. down.

  1716. Therefore, on that day,

  1717. Gideon was called

  1718. Jerob Baal.

1719. That is to say, let

  1720. Baal contend against

  1721. him, because he broke

  1722. down his altar.

1723. In the end, it's Joash,

  1724. the idolater, the very

  1725. one who built and

  1726. sponsored this altar to

  1727. Baal, who comes to

  1728. Gideon's defense.

1729. That's quite the twist in

  1730. the story, isn't it?

  1731. When we're faithful to

  1732. stand for God's truth,

1733. most people will hate us

  1734. for it.

1735. But then, God will also

1736. use us to soften the

  1737. hearts of others.

  1738. I think that's what's

  1739. happening with Joash

  1740. here.

  1741. The text doesn't say

1742. that he fully turns to

1743. God in this moment, but

1744. at the very least, he's

  1745. questioning the

  1746. existence and power of

  1747. Baal.

  1748. This is an exchange

  1749. between him and the

1750. people of the town that's

  1751. similar to what happens

  1752. with Elijah and the

1753. prophets of Baal in 1

  1754. Kings 18.

  1755. You remember that great

1756. war over whose God is

1757. real, and they build the

1758. altars and they do the

  1759. thing there.

1760. This is so similar to

  1761. that, isn't it?

  1762. The language of it.

  1763. Joash appears like

  1764. Elijah to be mocking

  1765. this supposed deity now.

  1766. Now, gods are supposed

  1767. to save their own

  1768. people, but Joash charged

1769. the men with having to

  1770. save Baal instead.

1771. If he is a god, let him

  1772. contend for himself, says

  1773. Joash.

1774. And then he gave Gideon a

  1775. new name, Jerob Baal.

  1776. Means, let Baal contend

  1777. against him.

  1778. Let Baal contend.

1779. Let Baal come to his own

  1780. defense, essentially.

  1781. It's meant to be a

1782. mockery of Baal, I think.

  1783. And everywhere Gideon

1784. went from then on, his

  1785. very name would remind

1786. people that the gods of

  1787. Canaan were powerless

1788. against the God of Israel.

  1789. He's a marked man now in

  1790. the best of ways.

  1791. This conclusion, it

  1792. illuminates and clarifies

  1793. the real significance of

  1794. the story.

1795. This was not ultimately a

  1796. war between Israel and

  1797. Midian, but between

  1798. Yahweh and Baal.

  1799. God was reminding his

1800. people that he alone is

1801. God, that he would not

  1802. tolerate their idolatry,

  1803. and that their repentance

  1804. was necessary for their

  1805. salvation.

  1806. Gideon becomes a marked

  1807. man.

1808. He gets this new name,

  1809. man moving forward.

1810. He would be known for his

1811. faithfulness to God and his

  1812. stand against the worship

  1813. of Baal.

1814. And such is the case for

1815. believers who stand for the

  1816. truth.

  1817. We become marked individuals

1818. in the best possible way.

  1819. Coming to Christ, we

  1820. surrender our identities to

  1821. be identified with Jesus.

  1822. our faith and obedience

1823. should then follow us as an

  1824. illuminating message that

1825. declares the glory of the one

  1826. true God.

1827. As we bring the study to a

1828. close, I want to remind you of

  1829. something that I haven't

1830. mentioned in a few weeks, and

1831. we focused on it a little bit in

1832. the introduction to this book,

1833. but we need to remember that

1834. Judges is not merely a history

  1835. of ancient Israel.

  1836. It's a prophetic message about

  1837. God and about salvation.

1838. So when we come to each

1839. section of the book like we

1840. have this morning, we aren't

1841. simply looking to gain more

  1842. knowledge about the events

1843. that took place, but we are to

1844. hear and to respond to the

1845. message that God has given.

1846. And with that in mind, I think

1847. there's two primary takeaways that

1848. we need to consider in this text.

1849. First, we need to examine our

1850. hearts to see what kind of

1851. altars to bail might need to be

  1852. destroyed.

1853. What kind of bells are you

1854. bowing to day by day in your

  1855. life?

  1856. A fundamental tenet of a covenant

1857. relationship with God is found in

  1858. the first commandment.

1859. You shall have no other gods

  1860. besides me.

1861. I have no other gods before me.

1862. And the chances are that you

  1863. don't have a shrine set up to a

1864. false deity in your home.

1865. But for us, bail is anything that

1866. stands between us and faithfulness

  1867. wholeheartedly to God.

1868. And bail takes many shapes.

1869. Bail for you may be materialism.

1870. Bail for you may be your work.

1871. Bail for you may just be selfish

  1872. desires that you have.

1873. Bail for you may be your family.

1874. Bail for you may be all kinds of

  1875. things.

1876. It will take many shapes, but it

1877. ultimately comes back to the worship

  1878. of self.

1879. We're chasing our own wills at the

  1880. expense of God's will.

1881. And what we need to remember is that

1882. you cannot expect God's blessing

1883. while you're bowing to bail.

  1884. You cannot expect salvation

1885. while you persist in willful sin.

1886. And what you need to do is repent.

1887. Destroy the altar to bail in your life

1888. and genuinely worship God in spirit

  1889. and in truth.

  1890. That's takeaway number one.

1891. But then we also need to follow

  1892. Gideon's example of faithfulness

1893. in spite of his fear here.

1894. So first application comes from the

  1895. big picture.

1896. What's this message God is sending

  1897. to Israel?

1898. Second one takes a little closer look

1899. at Gideon and what did he do here.

1900. And I think there's a lot for us to

  1901. learn.

1902. Following Christ is always going to

1903. set us at odds with the world.

1904. And we need to be willing to count

  1905. the cost of discipleship.

1906. Trusting that Jesus is better than

1907. anything we might experience in this

  1908. life.

  1909. He's better.

  1910. He said as much.

1911. I love the parables that he said

1912. when he talked about the gospel of

1913. the kingdom being like the man who

1914. stumbled upon the treasure in the

  1915. field.

1916. You remember the parable Jesus told?

  1917. Is it Luke 15?

  1918. Something like that.

1919. And he says that this man he stumbles

1920. over this treasure in the field and

1921. what he does he he sees such tremendous

1922. value in this treasure that he goes

1923. and he sells everything that he has.

  1924. All of it.

1925. In order that he could buy that field

1926. so that he could have that treasure.

  1927. That's a picture of repentance isn't it?

  1928. I don't need this life.

  1929. I don't need all the things that I'm

1930. longing for and aching for now.

  1931. I don't need those things.

1932. All those things can be realized in

  1933. Christ.

1934. And then he says that he gives us a

  1935. second one.

1936. If we didn't get that one he gives us a

1937. second picture and he says it's it's

  1938. also like the merchant.

1939. Who finds this pearl of just tremendous

1940. value incalculable value and he goes

1941. and he sells his whole business in order

1942. that he could have this one pearl of

1943. great price and Jesus Jesus says that's

  1944. what the gospel is.

1945. That's what the kingdom is like.

1946. It's people who have decided that this

1947. life that I'm better than anything this

  1948. life offers.

1949. That knowing me is better than the

1950. closeness that you long for with your

1951. family and your friends and your

  1952. community.

1953. That pleasing me is better than pleasing

  1954. self.

1955. That what I offer is better than anything

1956. that this world can offer you.

1957. And what we find in Gideon here is an

1958. example of that kind of faithfulness.

1959. That the weak certainly not perfect still

1960. says I belong to God and I'm going to

1961. trust God and I'm going to obey God even

1962. when it costs me everything.

1963. A stand for Christ might create a new

1964. group of enemies in your life.

  1965. It probably will.

1966. But God might also use it to work on the

1967. heart of a Joe Ash in your home or a Joe

  1968. Ash in your community.

1969. And how exciting is it to think that God

1970. would use us in that way.
