  1. there are certain concepts that seem to be universally associated with the Christmas season.

  2. They're ingrained in our holiday culture under the banner of Christmas spirit, typically.

  3. Perhaps you've heard that phrase used a number of times already in just the last couple of weeks.

  4. And they show up routinely in our festive songs.

  5. They show up in our movies.

  6. Perhaps if you have your Christmas decorations up in your house, you will see words associated with these concepts on display in your home.

  7. If you've already begun to wrap Christmas presents for the year, perhaps you have some wrapping paper that has these concepts plastered all over it.

  8. But everywhere we turn for the next few weeks, we are going to see the emphasis on concepts like joy, hope, love, faith, peace.

  9. And we're talking culturally here.

  10. I'm not just talking about the church.

  11. You can walk into the stores.

  12. You can go to the mall.

  13. You can drive down the roads.

  14. You can see the ads on television, whatever it is that you're doing.

  15. And you're going to see an emphasis on these things that really, for the most part, are just reserved for religious talk the rest of the year, isn't it?

  16. But it's different this time of year.

  17. And we're going to see it emphasized everywhere.

  18. And, of course, these are totally abstract ideas on their own.

  19. And they're interpreted in a variety of ways, culturally speaking.

  20. So that if you were to go to Target or some other retail location today looking for Christmas presents, you're going to see probably on the signage and on the banners that they have in their store things like joy.

  21. It may even just be that word.

  22. Joy.

  23. Right?

  24. And what is the messaging that comes along with that?

  25. You will have great joy this Christmas season if you buy your Christmas presents from us.

  26. Yes.

  27. That's where you will have your joy this year.

  28. Right?

  29. Or maybe shopping is not your thing.

  30. Maybe your thing is to veg out on the couch and turn on the Hallmark Channel or Netflix or something like that.

  31. And what's the messaging that comes across?

  32. Love, generally, isn't it?

  33. Love is the word that we see.

  34. Christmas love, a Christmas prince, a Christmas tree, a Christmas everything.

  35. And it's all basically the same story.

  36. Right?

  37. And the messaging is the same.

  38. The messaging is you will experience love this Christmas season if you leave your job in the big city and you go back to your small hometown for the season.

  39. And you happen to run into that guy that you knew in elementary school who turned into this successful hunk.

  40. And if you will just do that, you will have love this Christmas season.

  41. Right?

  42. And we could go on and on with that, can't we?

  43. Everyone is telling us that we can have joy and hope and love and peace this Christmas season.

  44. But they all have different answers for what those things mean and for how they can actually be obtained.

  45. Well, what's fascinating is that no matter how hard our secular world works to separate the season from religious thought,

  46. it can't help but borrow from Christian worldviews when using these categories.

  47. That's where they come from.

  48. Thoughts of peace, love, hope, and joy.

  49. Those are distinctly biblical ideas that everyone wants to achieve so long as they can do it their way rather than God's way.

  50. It's interesting, isn't it?

  51. It's fascinating, really.

  52. We want everything that God offers.

  53. We just don't want to achieve it God's way.

  54. We want to be able to get at it our way.

  55. We want to decide what love means and how we can get it, but we at least want the love.

  56. So on and so forth as the concepts go.

  57. Over the next few weeks, we're going to look at how Jesus alone is the fulfillment of these things that we all long so deeply to experience.

  58. If you really do want hope and peace and joy and love this Christmas, you're only going to find it in Christ.

  59. It's the only place, the only person where you can really genuinely find these things.

  60. And this morning, we're going to turn our attention to the birth of Jesus as the advent of peace.

  61. I'm not going to do very thorough expositions through this.

  62. We're going to bounce around, so I want you to keep your Bibles handy and prepare to turn to a few places.

  63. But we're going to start here in Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  64. Are you there?

  65. Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  66. Let's read a larger portion of the chapter here, starting at verse 8.

  67. In the same region, there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

  68. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them.

  69. The glory of the Lord shone around them.

  70. They were filled with great fear.

  71. The angel said to them,

  72. We're going to come back to that verse on Christmas Eve.

  73. But maybe take the month.

  74. If you don't like to do a lot of reading, just read that verse every day.

  75. Just meditate on that verse every day.

  76. There is so much packed into just that little phrase.

  77. Unto is born this day in the city of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord.

  78. Four major, major elements of biblical truth are represented just in that one announcement.

  79. Verse 12,

  80. And this will be a sign for you.

  81. You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.

  82. Suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host,

  83. praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest.

  84. And on earth, peace among those with whom he is pleased.

  85. When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another,

  86. Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened,

  87. which the Lord has made known to us.

  88. And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger.

  89. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child.

  90. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.

  91. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.

  92. And the shepherds returned, glorifying, praising God for all they had heard and seen,

  93. as it had been told them.

  94. And peace.

  95. Peace is what we want to focus on here.

  96. Christmas is often regarded as a season that brings peace.

  97. And just like with those other concepts, in the coming days,

  98. we're going to all be instructed in various ways to pursue peace.

  99. Especially with those that we've spent much of the year warring with.

  100. That's what's funny about it, isn't it?

  101. Whatever you're going to do for most of the year, at least at Christmas,

  102. set those things aside and be at peace with one another.

  103. You're going to hear, as if we're not hearing a lot of it already,

  104. but you're going to hear even stronger calls in the next couple of weeks.

  105. And underneath the banner of Christmas spirit,

  106. that for at least Christmas, we want the fighting in Gaza to cease.

  107. At least for Christmas.

  108. And because of Christmas, we want the war in Ukraine to pause.

  109. At least for Christmas, we want these conflicts around the world that are unfolding.

  110. There's going to be urges, stronger urges than maybe normally there are throughout other times of the year.

  111. And it's going to be under this banner of peace that is associated with the Christmas season.

  112. People groups that genuinely hate each other are going to be urged a little stronger to get along.

  113. You're going to be encouraged to love your in-laws when you go and visit their house

  114. and just be at peace with them.

  115. All the things, we're going to be encouraged on those things.

  116. And those are good things.

  117. Those are not things that we should have a problem with.

  118. But this message of peace, noble as it is, really ultimately and annually is fruitless.

  119. It's fruitless because it has no ground or effective mechanism for actually making peace.

  120. That's the problem.

  121. It's so abstract.

  122. We're just simply told to look deep within ourselves,

  123. and there we'll find the strength to do these things.

  124. But the problem is when we begin to be so introspective,

  125. when we look so deep down within ourselves,

  126. what we find, what we come to the end of is the very sin,

  127. the very hurt that we've experienced that caused all the turmoil to begin with.

  128. It's very backward reasoning.

  129. It's, hey, it's Christmas.

  130. Look inside yourself so that you can find the strength to be at peace.

  131. But then when you really begin to think about it,

  132. you think, well, all I can think about is the problems that has robbed me of peace.

  133. How is it that I can find in myself some mechanism for actually making peace now?

  134. And then the Christmas season really just becomes a massive lie.

  135. It's a facade that renders displays of peace utterly superficial.

  136. The message is the basic equivalent of the exhausted parent saying to their kids,

  137. would you please, for 30 minutes, pretend to like each other so we can have a decent meal as a family, right?

  138. That's basically what the messaging comes down to.

  139. We get out of all the ads.

  140. Basically, it's our mom saying, listen, would you just pretend to like each other

  141. so we can enjoy some stories and some cookies and some hot chocolate for a little while?

  142. None of it's real.

  143. It's perhaps spirit lifting to some extent, but it's not real.

  144. It's fruitless.

  145. It's not lasting.

  146. It's not true peace.

  147. It's deferred war.

  148. There's also a kind of messaging this time of year, every year,

  149. that seeks to blend the secular notions of peace with the religious and sacred hopes of peace,

  150. hoping that it might achieve a better result.

  151. that if we can just take a little bit of this and a little bit of that and bring it together,

  152. it will finally work.

  153. Combines elements of religion and culture to offer something everyone longs to experience,

  154. but then it still misses the mark.

  155. What it ends up doing is actually muddying the waters even more.

  156. Can I give you an example?

  157. Maybe a facetious example, but an example nonetheless.

  158. You like Gene Autry?

  159. In 1947, Gene Autry publishes and records for the first time these lyrics.

  160. Peace on earth will come to all if we just follow the light.

  161. So let's give thanks to the Lord above.

  162. Why?

  163. Because Santa Claus comes tonight.

  164. It's this blending notion that we're confronted with every year.

  165. It's been going on for decades where we take a little bit of the secular and we take a little bit of the sacred.

  166. We don't want to emphasize either one too much.

  167. We try to make it work together.

  168. But what it does is it muddies the waters even more.

  169. I know that's not meant to be taken so seriously, so don't come at me after the service.

  170. I'm not saying you can't sing Here Come Santa Claus.

  171. But it does actually symbolize the vast confusion that has existed in Western thought for decades.

  172. It includes an utterly vapid notion of peace on earth first.

  173. What does that even mean?

  174. Peace on earth will come to all if we just follow the light.

  175. Because he immediately follows it up with something that's completely heinous.

  176. He says,

  177. Now we're to give thanksgiving to the Lord, not because of the advent of the Christ who has come to save us from our sins,

  178. but for the advent of a storybook character who comes to bring us toys and eat all our cookies.

  179. Do you see why this is a problem?

  180. Do you see why this kind of blending, it actually makes things worse?

  181. It teases us with thoughts of peace by at least acknowledging that God has something to do with it.

  182. But then it fails to deliver on its promise by replacing Jesus with Santa.

  183. Now, the Bible gives us a better way.

  184. A much better way.

  185. Not only does God issue genuine promises of peace,

  186. but he fully delivers on those promises through his son, Jesus Christ.

  187. We all long for this peace.

  188. The world longs for peace, even those who don't know Christ.

  189. They long for peace because God put that in us.

  190. He put that in us.

  191. He put that desire in us.

  192. And they're trying to find it in all kinds of ways.

  193. But God put a longing in us that only he can satisfy.

  194. Only he can bring this peace.

  195. And what I want to do this morning is look at three passages

  196. that help us understand the meaning of God's peace,

  197. how Jesus is the provider of that peace,

  198. and then how we can actually truly receive that peace once and for all.

  199. Okay?

  200. So we're going to look at what peace actually is,

  201. how Jesus is the fulfillment of it,

  202. how Jesus alone is the fulfillment of it,

  203. and how we can receive it.

  204. Number one, I want you to see the announcement of peace.

  205. The announcement of peace.

  206. This is where we come to Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  207. The angel's appearance to shepherds near Bethlehem

  208. on the night of Jesus' birth

  209. is such an exciting part of the Christmas story, isn't it?

  210. Like, you just can't imagine what it would have been like

  211. to be on that hill or in those caves

  212. or wherever it was that they were near Bethlehem

  213. when all of this began to unfold.

  214. It says they were in great fear.

  215. I would imagine that's a bit of an understatement.

  216. I would have been scared to death.

  217. But this part of the story is actually hugely important.

  218. The angelic message was a plain declaration of the gospel

  219. to these lowly shepherds.

  220. It even uses gospel language.

  221. Look at verse 10.

  222. And the angel said to them,

  223. Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news.

  224. That's the euangelion.

  225. Evangel.

  226. Good news.

  227. Gospel.

  228. That's the gospel word.

  229. Behold, I bring you good news of great joy,

  230. the angel says.

  231. But we need to notice that the substance of this good news,

  232. of this gospel message,

  233. has everything to do with Jesus.

  234. The good news of great joy in verse 10

  235. is equal to,

  236. Unto you is born this day in the city of David

  237. a Savior who is Christ the Lord,

  238. in verse 11.

  239. That's the substance of the gospel message.

  240. He hasn't got to peace yet.

  241. That's not actually a part of the message

  242. that they deliver to the shepherds.

  243. The message to the shepherds is,

  244. The Christ has come.

  245. He is born a Savior in Bethlehem.

  246. Now, too often we can be guilty

  247. of reducing the gospel message

  248. to what really are just the benefits of the gospel,

  249. but not the substance of it.

  250. Good news of great joy

  251. is not first peace on earth.

  252. Good news of great joy is Christ is born.

  253. Jesus is the gospel.

  254. And you can't experience any of the benefits of the gospel,

  255. like peace and love and so on,

  256. without Jesus,

  257. without who He is

  258. and without what He's done for us.

  259. That's why the notions of blending secular

  260. and sacred together,

  261. they don't actually work.

  262. Because in Jesus alone,

  263. we have both the ground for peace

  264. and the mechanism for peace.

  265. The actual way of achieving it

  266. and receiving it.

  267. So that if you don't have Jesus,

  268. you can't actually have peace.

  269. At least not the peace that we're referring to here.

  270. And we're going to return to this text on Christmas Eve.

  271. But for now,

  272. I want to draw your attention

  273. to the praise of the heavenly hosts

  274. in verses 13 and 14.

  275. Look at it with me.

  276. Suddenly,

  277. there was with the angel

  278. a multitude of the heavenly hosts

  279. praising God and saying,

  280. Glory to God in the highest

  281. and on earth,

  282. peace among those with whom He is pleased.

  283. So with the announcement of Jesus' birth

  284. in verse 10,

  285. comes the announcement of peace

  286. through Jesus

  287. in the praise of the heavenly host

  288. in verse 14.

  289. So if you follow the progression

  290. of the text here,

  291. it becomes clear that the result

  292. of Christ's advent,

  293. of His coming,

  294. is God's glory

  295. in making peace

  296. with His people.

  297. Do you see that in the praise?

  298. The angel appears

  299. and he says,

  300. Listen,

  301. the Christ has come.

  302. He's in Bethlehem.

  303. Go see Him.

  304. And then all of a sudden,

  305. there's all of these angels

  306. and they're praising God,

  307. not the shepherds.

  308. They're not speaking to the shepherds.

  309. They're praising God

  310. and they're saying,

  311. This is bringing God glory,

  312. glory to God in the highest

  313. because this Savior has come.

  314. And because He has come,

  315. He has brought peace on earth

  316. to those with whom God

  317. is pleased to give it.

  318. You see the progression.

  319. But it's essential that we understand

  320. what this peace actually means.

  321. Again, cultural notions of peace

  322. typically have to do with

  323. getting along with other people.

  324. But that's not the kind of peace

  325. that the gospel has in view.

  326. It's not the kind of peace

  327. that the gospel promises actually.

  328. If we think of this announcement

  329. as the end of wars

  330. and the end of interpersonal disputes,

  331. listen, if that's what this is,

  332. then the gospel has failed.

  333. It has not delivered.

  334. And it doesn't take you long

  335. to figure that out.

  336. How many of you had a fight

  337. with somebody in your house

  338. before you even came this morning?

  339. Interpersonal disputes,

  340. they still happen.

  341. Wars, they're getting worse and worse.

  342. More prevalent.

  343. If that's what the angels had in mind

  344. in this announcement,

  345. then the gospel has failed

  346. and we are lost.

  347. The Bible's not promised

  348. that kind of peace

  349. in relation to the first advent

  350. of the Christ of Christ.

  351. Jesus himself said that

  352. there would continue to be conflict

  353. among people,

  354. that nations would continue

  355. in some cases to be at war

  356. because of him even.

  357. Here is words from Matthew chapter 10.

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  358. Jesus himself says,

  359. Do not think that I have come

  360. to bring peace to earth.

  361. I have not come to bring peace,

  362. he says,

  363. but a sword.

  364. For I have come to set a man

  365. against his father

  366. and a daughter against her mother

  367. and a daughter-in-law

  368. against her mother-in-law

  369. and a person's enemies

  370. will be those of his own household.

  371. Whoever loves father and mother

  372. more than me is not worthy of me.

  373. Whoever loves son and daughter

  374. more than me is not worthy of me.

  375. And whoever does not take up his cross

  376. and follow me is not worthy of me.

  377. Whoever finds his life will lose it.

  378. Whoever loses his life for my sake

  379. will find it.

  380. Those are strong words from the Savior.

  381. And they are immersed in conflict.

  382. They're immersed in war

  383. and in problems.

  384. Now it doesn't mean that we shouldn't

  385. pursue peace with these people.

  386. Jesus' point is that

  387. even the gospel brings division

  388. and conflict.

  389. The gospel doesn't promise

  390. the kind of peace

  391. that we're so used to hearing about

  392. this time of year.

  393. So then what does this peace actually mean?

  394. Are we to understand that

  395. Jesus' teaching

  396. is in contradiction

  397. with the angelic announcement

  398. at his birth?

  399. No.

  400. Because they're not referring

  401. to the same kind of peace.

  402. The peace associated

  403. with the advent of Christ

  404. and that is proclaimed

  405. in the praise of the heavenly host

  406. is not peace with your wife.

  407. It is peace with God.

  408. That's the peace

  409. that is now promised.

  410. Peace

  411. with your creator.

  412. The primary benefit

  413. of peace

  414. in the incarnation

  415. of Jesus

  416. is not that you will

  417. get along better

  418. with those in your family

  419. and in your workplace

  420. but that you might be

  421. reconciled to God

  422. and escape

  423. his eternal wrath.

  424. You see,

  425. the world gets this

  426. completely backward.

  427. But what's good,

  428. what good is it

  429. if we get along

  430. with every human being

  431. on the planet

  432. but we're an enemy of God?

  433. The advent of the Christ

  434. isn't about bringing peace

  435. among men

  436. though it does get there

  437. eventually.

  438. The advent of the Christ

  439. is about bringing peace

  440. between man and God,

  441. their creator.

  442. creator.

  443. Reconciliation.

  444. Restoration together

  445. in eternity.

  446. And the reality

  447. of our standing before God

  448. and his promise

  449. to provide a way

  450. for peace

  451. takes us all the way

  452. back to the Garden of Eden.

  453. Adam and Eve

  454. enjoyed perfect fellowship

  455. and peace with God

  456. until the day

  457. that they disobeyed him.

  458. Think about what happened

  459. on that day.

  460. on that day

  461. they were expelled

  462. from the garden,

  463. the place,

  464. the paradise,

  465. the place where God

  466. had set them.

  467. They were expelled

  468. from that.

  469. They received the curses

  470. that came along

  471. with their sin.

  472. They lost fellowship

  473. with their creator.

  474. And though graciously

  475. allowed to live

  476. a long life,

  477. they were then

  478. destined for death.

  479. That was the ultimate

  480. consequence.

  481. death.

  482. Death.

  483. You see,

  484. God's holiness,

  485. it demands judgment.

  486. But even amid

  487. the judgment,

  488. he promised

  489. that he would provide

  490. a means of peace

  491. and reconciliation

  492. once again.

  493. We call it

  494. the proto-evangelion.

  495. Genesis 3.15.

  496. In the curse

  497. of the serpent,

  498. I will put enmity

  499. between you

  500. and the woman,

  501. between your offspring

  502. and her offspring,

  503. he shall bruise your head,

  504. you shall bruise his heel.

  505. It doesn't say much,

  506. at least in that verse,

  507. it doesn't say much

  508. about how this is going

  509. to happen,

  510. but it's the start.

  511. God,

  512. even in the midst

  513. of the opening judgment,

  514. gives an opening promise.

  515. One day,

  516. he will send one

  517. who will bring peace,

  518. who will reconcile us

  519. back to our creator.

  520. And then through

  521. the scriptures,

  522. God gives us

  523. all these pictures

  524. and promises

  525. of what this

  526. Messiah,

  527. Savior,

  528. would be

  529. and what he would do

  530. and it all has to do

  531. with making an atonement

  532. for our sins.

  533. All of it.

  534. It has to do

  535. with atonement.

  536. The advent of Christ

  537. means the advent

  538. of peace with God.

  539. Sinners reconciled

  540. to their creator

  541. by grace.

  542. The praise of the heavenly host

  543. announced that

  544. God's promised peace

  545. peace was now

  546. being fulfilled

  547. in, quote,

  548. a child wrapped

  549. in swaddling cloths

  550. and lying in a manger.

  551. So I think

  552. Gene Autry

  553. had it wrong.

  554. peace on earth

  555. is an experience

  556. because Santa Claus

  557. is coming to town.

  558. Peace on earth

  559. is experience

  560. because a Savior

  561. who is Christ the Lord

  562. is born this day

  563. in the city of David.

  564. And the peace

  565. he brings

  566. is peace

  567. with God himself.

  568. That's amazing

  569. to consider.

  570. You just let that

  571. marinate on your mind

  572. a while.

  573. This peace,

  574. it restores me

  575. to my heavenly Father.

  576. It's a peace

  577. that escapes

  578. eternal hell.

  579. It's a peace

  580. that takes

  581. the judgment

  582. that I deserve

  583. and puts it

  584. on someone else

  585. so that I can be

  586. at peace

  587. a child of God.

  588. That's the peace

  589. that's promised

  590. in the gospel.

  591. That's the announcement

  592. of it.

  593. Number two,

  594. let's look at

  595. the provision

  596. of peace.

  597. The provision

  598. of peace.

  599. And for this,

  600. I want you to turn

  601. to Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  602. Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  603. Would you just

  604. flip there quickly?

  605. Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  606. It's one thing

  607. to acknowledge

  608. that peace

  609. with God

  610. comes only

  611. through the advent

  612. of the Christ,

  613. but how exactly

  614. does Jesus

  615. provide and secure

  616. this peace?

  617. Let's first say

  618. how he doesn't

  619. supply this peace.

  620. It's not simply

  621. by virtue

  622. of his existence.

  623. It didn't only

  624. require his coming.

  625. It wasn't just

  626. the fact

  627. that he came.

  628. That's not enough.

  629. We're not given

  630. peace with God

  631. simply because

  632. he was born.

  633. And the Bible

  634. nowhere teaches

  635. that the entire

  636. universe

  637. is reconciled

  638. to God

  639. on the grounds

  640. of Christ's

  641. goodness and virtue.

  642. The Bible doesn't

  643. teach that at all.

  644. That's universalism.

  645. That's not what

  646. the Bible teaches.

  647. Even the angelic message

  648. itself declares

  649. that this peace

  650. was limited

  651. to those

  652. with whom God

  653. is pleased

  654. to give it.

  655. So it's not

  656. simply by the

  657. existence of Jesus

  658. that suddenly

  659. everyone is just

  660. okay and everyone's

  661. at peace.

  662. Okay?

  663. Neither does Jesus

  664. provide this peace

  665. by setting

  666. a moral

  667. example

  668. by which

  669. we might

  670. earn our way

  671. back to God.

  672. Doesn't work

  673. like that either.

  674. It's not that

  675. God sends

  676. his son

  677. to do some

  678. things

  679. so that if

  680. we do some

  681. things ourselves

  682. we'll be made

  683. acceptable.

  684. It's not that

  685. he sends Jesus

  686. to do like a

  687. percentage of it

  688. and then if we

  689. cover our own

  690. percentage here

  691. then okay

  692. he's gonna give us

  693. a pass

  694. and things are

  695. gonna be done.

  696. That's not how

  697. this works.

  698. The prevailing

  699. thought of the day

  700. is that if there

  701. is a God

  702. and if he's

  703. good

  704. then he will

  705. reward those

  706. who do their

  707. best and try

  708. their hardest.

  709. But Jesus

  710. himself said

  711. in Matthew

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  712. chapter 7

  713. that there will

  714. be many people

  715. who stand

  716. before him

  717. in judgment

  718. having lived

  719. exceptionally

  720. moral lives

  721. and still

  722. be condemned

  723. to eternal

  724. hell.

  725. So it's not

  726. just about

  727. providing a

  728. moral example

  729. so that if we

  730. live faithfully

  731. and morally

  732. and ethically

  733. will make it.

  734. No.

  735. Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  736. chapter 1

  737. look with me

  738. at verse 19.

  739. I know we're

  740. parachuting into

  741. this text but

  742. hang with me.

  743. For in him

  744. that is in

  745. Jesus

  746. all the fullness

  747. of God

  748. was pleased

  749. to dwell

  750. and through

  751. him

  752. to reconcile

  753. to himself

  754. all things

  755. that's peace

  756. with God

  757. whether on

  758. earth or in

  759. heaven

  760. making peace

  761. by the blood

  762. of his cross

  763. and you

  764. who were once

  765. alienated

  766. and hostile

  767. in mind

  768. doing evil

  769. deeds

  770. he has now

  771. reconciled

  772. in his body

  773. of flesh

  774. by his death

  775. in order

  776. to present

  777. you holy

  778. and blameless

  779. and above

  780. reproach

  781. before him.

  782. Now there's

  783. enough here

  784. for two or three

  785. sermons.

  786. Let me just

  787. give you a

  788. snippet of it

  789. here.

  790. Okay.

  791. Three simple

  792. things about

  793. this text

  794. that refers

  795. to Jesus

  796. as the

  797. provider

  798. of peace

  799. and how

  800. he's

  801. provided it.

  802. Number one

  803. our peace

  804. comes through

  805. his cross.

  806. Our peace

  807. comes through

  808. his cross.

  809. God was

  810. pleased

  811. through Jesus

  812. to reconcile

  813. to himself

  814. all things

  815. making peace

  816. by the blood

  817. of his cross.

  818. Peace with God

  819. is announced

  820. at the birth

  821. of Christ

  822. but it is

  823. provided

  824. and secured

  825. at the

  826. death

  827. of Christ.

  828. We are not

  829. made at peace

  830. with God

  831. simply because

  832. Christ exists

  833. and was born.

  834. We are made

  835. at peace

  836. with God

  837. because

  838. Christ

  839. died

  840. in our

  841. place.

  842. Earlier

  843. I mentioned

  844. the promises

  845. and pictures

  846. in the scripture

  847. regarding the

  848. person and work

  849. of the Messiah

  850. that God

  851. had given us

  852. so that we

  853. would know

  854. what to look

  855. for.

  856. Jesus

  857. is the

  858. fulfillment

  859. of all

  860. of those

  861. things

  862. not the

  863. least of

  864. which is

  865. the

  866. fulfillment

  867. of the

  868. picture

  869. we see

  870. in the

  871. Old Testament

  872. sacrificial

  873. system.

  874. Year

  875. after year

  876. they brought

  877. their lambs

  878. and goats

  879. and bulls

  880. and pigeons

  881. and all the

  882. things that

  883. God had

  884. instructed them

  885. to give

  886. and they

  887. sacrificed

  888. them year

  889. after year

  890. after year

  891. but they

  892. had to keep

  893. coming and

  894. doing it

  895. again

  896. because none

  897. of it

  898. actually worked.

  899. none of it

  900. was sufficient

  901. to provide

  902. atonement

  903. and they

  904. did it over

  905. and over

  906. and over

  907. God

  908. getting them

  909. to look

  910. forward

  911. that one

  912. day

  913. a sacrifice

  914. would come

  915. a once

  916. and for all

  917. sacrifice

  918. that would

  919. never have

  920. to be

  921. repeated

  922. and then

  923. we get

  924. to the

  925. New Testament

  926. and we

  927. see all

  928. that the

  929. Bible

  930. has to

  931. say

  932. about

  933. Jesus

  934. and we

  935. find that

  936. what Jesus

  937. is is the

  938. perfect

  939. spotless

  940. lamb of

  941. God

  942. slain

  943. for the

  944. sins of

  945. the world

  946. it's only

  947. through

  948. the atoning

  949. blood of

  950. his cross

  951. that sinners

  952. can be

  953. reconciled

  954. to the

  955. holy God

  956. why was

  957. Jesus

  958. born

  959. Jesus

  960. was literally

  961. born

  962. to die

  963. that's why

  964. he came

  965. to die

  966. because it's

  967. only in

  968. his death

  969. that we

  970. can have

  971. life

  972. and peace

  973. and be

  974. reconciled

  975. to God

  976. our peace

  977. comes through

  978. his cross

  979. number two

  980. our peace

  981. comes through

  982. his person

  983. our peace

  984. comes through

  985. his person

  986. not just

  987. anyone

  988. could make

  989. a sacrifice

  990. to satisfy

  991. God's wrath

  992. for our sins

  993. it wouldn't

  994. work

  995. we all

  996. have sin

  997. which means

  998. our death

  999. is its own

  1000. punishment

  1001. but Jesus

  1002. had no sin

  1003. so his death

  1004. is not a payment

  1005. for his own

  1006. wrongdoing

  1007. it must be

  1008. for someone

  1009. else's wrongdoing

  1010. it's a substitution

  1011. it took a perfect

  1012. sinless sacrifice

  1013. to appease

  1014. God

  1015. and bring

  1016. us peace

  1017. so what is it

  1018. about Jesus'

  1019. cross

  1020. that made

  1021. his sacrifice

  1022. efficacious

  1023. for us

  1024. it's who

  1025. he is

  1026. it's his

  1027. person

  1028. we can be

  1029. reconciled

  1030. to God

  1031. through Jesus

  1032. because as Paul

  1033. says in verse

  1034. 19

  1035. all the fullness

  1036. of God

  1037. was pleased

  1038. to dwell

  1039. in him

  1040. Jesus

  1041. not only

  1042. bears

  1043. the glory

  1044. of God

  1045. but all

  1046. that God

  1047. is

  1048. dwells

  1049. in him

  1050. which is to

  1051. say

  1052. that Jesus

  1053. is truly

  1054. God

  1055. he's not a

  1056. representative

  1057. of God

  1058. he is God

  1059. God

  1060. in flesh

  1061. that's the

  1062. wonder of the

  1063. incarnation

  1064. isn't it

  1065. God

  1066. has become

  1067. man

  1068. to save

  1069. us from

  1070. our sins

  1071. Matt Boswell

  1072. and Matt

  1073. Papa

  1074. have just

  1075. recently released

  1076. a new

  1077. Christmas song

  1078. called

  1079. In the

  1080. Fullness

  1081. of Time

  1082. it's a

  1083. beautiful song

  1084. you should

  1085. go and

  1086. listen to

  1087. it

  1088. at the

  1089. very end

  1090. of the

  1091. song

  1092. they take

  1093. that old

  1094. hymn

  1095. that we

  1096. often sing

  1097. holy

  1098. holy

  1099. holy

  1100. lord

  1101. god

  1102. almighty

  1103. and they

  1104. add a

  1105. verse

  1106. to it

  1107. and it's

  1108. so wonderful

  1109. it fits

  1110. for

  1111. Christmas

  1112. holy

  1113. holy

  1114. holy

  1115. in a

  1116. manger

  1117. lowly

  1118. Christ

  1119. the

  1120. son

  1121. now

  1122. born

  1123. as

  1124. man

  1125. in our

  1126. humanity

  1127. veiled in

  1128. flesh

  1129. in our

  1130. humanity

  1131. kingdoms

  1132. bow

  1133. before

  1134. him

  1135. heaven

  1136. and earth

  1137. endure

  1138. him

  1139. and I

  1140. love

  1141. this

  1142. phrase

  1143. God

  1144. here

  1145. in

  1146. person

  1147. God

  1148. here

  1149. in

  1150. person

  1151. you know

  1152. how this

  1153. song goes

  1154. in the

  1155. other

  1156. verses

  1157. God

  1158. in

  1159. three

  1160. persons

  1161. now it

  1162. says

  1163. God

  1164. here

  1165. in

  1166. person

  1167. on

  1168. earth

  1169. in

  1170. person

  1171. God

  1172. himself

  1173. that's

  1174. who

  1175. Jesus

  1176. is

  1177. that's

  1178. why

  1179. any

  1180. of

  1181. this

  1182. matters

  1183. that's

  1184. why

  1185. Paul

  1186. can

  1187. write

  1188. to

  1189. the

  1190. Colossians

  1191. and say

  1192. that

  1193. God

  1194. was

  1195. pleased

  1196. to

  1197. use

  1198. Jesus

  1199. to

  1200. make

  1201. peace

  1202. with

  1203. us

  1204. through

  1205. the

  1206. blood

  1207. of

  1208. his

  1209. cross

  1210. it

  1211. was

  1212. only

  1213. possible

  1214. because

  1215. of

  1216. what

  1217. he

  1218. said

  1219. first

  1220. that

  1221. all

  1222. the

  1223. fullness

  1224. of

  1225. God

  1226. was

  1227. pleased

  1228. to

  1229. dwell

  1230. in

  1231. him

  1232. he

  1233. is

  1234. God

  1235. therefore

  1236. has

  1237. become

  1238. the

  1239. atonement

  1240. for

  1241. us

  1242. now

  1243. that's

  1244. real

  1245. peace

  1246. real

  1247. peace

  1248. is not

  1249. an

  1250. olive

  1251. branch

  1252. between

  1253. two

  1254. people

  1255. who

  1256. just

  1257. decide

  1258. to

  1259. now

  1260. get

  1261. along

  1262. real

  1263. eternal

  1264. peace

  1265. is the

  1266. one

  1267. who

  1268. has

  1269. been

  1270. wronged

  1271. giving

  1272. himself

  1273. for

  1274. the

  1275. ones

  1276. who

  1277. have

  1278. done

  1279. the

  1280. wrong

  1281. that's

  1282. what

  1283. God

  1284. has

  1285. done

  1286. and

  1287. it's

  1288. all

  1289. through

  1290. the

  1291. scriptures

  1292. we see

  1293. it

  1294. everywhere

  1295. maybe

  1296. most

  1297. notably

  1298. in

  1299. John

  1300. chapter

  1301. one

  1302. the

  1303. word

  1304. became

  1305. flesh

  1306. and

  1307. dwelt

  1308. among

  1309. us

  1310. and

  1311. we

  1312. have

  1313. seen

  1314. his

  1315. glory

  1316. glory

  1317. as

  1318. the

  1319. only

  1320. son

  1321. from

  1322. the

  1323. father

  1324. full

  1325. of

  1326. grace

  1327. and

  1328. truth

  1329. our

  1330. peace

  1331. comes

  1332. through

  1333. his

  1334. cross

  1335. but

  1336. that's

  1337. only

  1338. possible

  1339. because

  1340. our

  1341. peace

  1342. comes

  1343. through

  1344. his

  1345. person

  1346. who

  1347. he

  1348. is

  1349. thirdly

  1350. our

  1351. peace

  1352. comes

  1353. through

  1354. his

  1355. grace

  1356. comes

  1357. through

  1358. his

  1359. grace

  1360. look

  1361. back

  1362. at

  1363. the

  1364. verses

  1365. Colossians

  1366. one

  1367. notice

  1368. the

  1369. description

  1370. given

  1371. for

  1372. sinners

  1373. here

  1374. I think

  1375. it's

  1376. verse

  1377. 21

  1378. what does

  1379. it

  1380. say

  1381. we

  1382. were

  1383. once

  1384. alienated

  1385. hostile

  1386. in mind

  1387. that is

  1388. hostile

  1389. toward

  1390. God

  1391. in mind

  1392. doing

  1393. evil

  1394. deeds

  1395. that's

  1396. who

  1397. we

  1398. are

  1399. as

  1400. sinners

  1401. now

  1402. notice

  1403. what he

  1404. says

  1405. about us

  1406. at the

  1407. end

  1408. of

  1409. verse

  1410. 22

  1411. that

  1412. we

  1413. are

  1414. presented

  1415. holy

  1416. blameless

  1417. and above

  1418. reproach

  1419. before

  1420. God

  1421. that's

  1422. quite

  1423. the

  1424. shift

  1425. isn't

  1426. it

  1427. alienated

  1428. hostile

  1429. in mind

  1430. doing

  1431. evil

  1432. deeds

  1433. now

  1434. we're

  1435. presented

  1436. by

  1437. Jesus

  1438. holy

  1439. and

  1440. blameless

  1441. and above

  1442. reproach

  1443. before

  1444. God

  1445. it's a

  1446. complete

  1447. 180

  1448. and here's

  1449. a point

  1450. our

  1451. holiness

  1452. does not

  1453. come

  1454. before

  1455. being

  1456. reconciled

  1457. to God

  1458. but

  1459. after

  1460. do you

  1461. see that

  1462. this is

  1463. who we

  1464. were

  1465. but now

  1466. Christ

  1467. has

  1468. reconciled

  1469. in his

  1470. body

  1471. a flesh

  1472. by his

  1473. death

  1474. he's

  1475. reconciled

  1476. us

  1477. so that

  1478. he may

  1479. present

  1480. us

  1481. holy

  1482. and blameless

  1483. and above

  1484. reproach

  1485. what is

  1486. that all

  1487. about

  1488. it's

  1489. grace

  1490. it's

  1491. grace

  1492. we are

  1493. not made

  1494. at peace

  1495. because we

  1496. finally got

  1497. stuff together

  1498. because we

  1499. develop this

  1500. holiness

  1501. and this

  1502. goodness

  1503. and this

  1504. above

  1505. reproach

  1506. where God

  1507. was finally

  1508. willing to

  1509. unpinch his

  1510. nose

  1511. and give

  1512. us a

  1513. pass

  1514. no

  1515. that comes

  1516. after

  1517. we've

  1518. made

  1519. peace

  1520. or he's

  1521. made

  1522. peace

  1523. isn't

  1524. that amazing

  1525. peace

  1526. with God

  1527. is not

  1528. something

  1529. that we

  1530. can

  1531. achieve

  1532. so stop

  1533. trying to

  1534. earn it

  1535. you don't

  1536. have to

  1537. do that

  1538. it won't

  1539. work

  1540. anyways

  1541. it's

  1542. given to

  1543. us

  1544. freely

  1545. by God's

  1546. grace

  1547. through

  1548. Jesus

  1549. Christ

  1550. and it's

  1551. only after

  1552. we've been

  1553. reconciled

  1554. to God

  1555. that Jesus

  1556. begins his

  1557. work of

  1558. sanctification

  1559. making us

  1560. holy and

  1561. presentable to

  1562. God

  1563. and even

  1564. then

  1565. it's not

  1566. on the basis

  1567. of our

  1568. righteousness

  1569. that he

  1570. presents us

  1571. holy

  1572. it's on

  1573. the basis

  1574. of his

  1575. own

  1576. righteousness

  1577. that he

  1578. presents us

  1579. holy

  1580. isn't that

  1581. amazing

  1582. so what is

  1583. this peace

  1584. actually that

  1585. that the

  1586. gospel promises

  1587. it's peace

  1588. with God

  1589. first and

  1590. foremost

  1591. right

  1592. okay

  1593. that's

  1594. that's

  1595. really our

  1596. biggest need

  1597. other peace

  1598. can come

  1599. but it's

  1600. only going to

  1601. come after

  1602. we're made

  1603. at peace

  1604. with God

  1605. well

  1606. how is it

  1607. actually

  1608. secured

  1609. well Jesus

  1610. fulfills it

  1611. through the

  1612. cross

  1613. and atonement

  1614. thirdly

  1615. how can we

  1616. receive it

  1617. if that's how

  1618. it's been

  1619. secured for us

  1620. and if we

  1621. can't earn it

  1622. how do we

  1623. actually receive

  1624. it

  1625. that's the

  1626. third thing

  1627. the receiving

  1628. of peace

  1629. now I want you

  1630. to turn to

  1631. Romans chapter

  1632. five

  1633. he's gonna

  1634. look at the

  1635. first verse

  1636. Romans chapter

  1637. five

  1638. we read this

  1639. all the time

  1640. in our prayers

  1641. of confession

  1642. and it's

  1643. worth doing

  1644. again here

  1645. we've seen

  1646. that the

  1647. promised peace

  1648. of God

  1649. through Christ

  1650. is not

  1651. universally

  1652. applied

  1653. okay we

  1654. got that

  1655. check

  1656. we've also

  1657. noted that

  1658. it's not

  1659. something we

  1660. can earn

  1661. by living

  1662. up to a

  1663. particular

  1664. moral standard

  1665. okay we

  1666. got that

  1667. check

  1668. so how

  1669. exactly is

  1670. this peace

  1671. good news

  1672. then

  1673. because it

  1674. seems

  1675. impossible to

  1676. actually

  1677. get

  1678. how can

  1679. be received

  1680. well the

  1681. answer is

  1682. so simple

  1683. that it

  1684. almost sounds

  1685. too good

  1686. to be true

  1687. that's the

  1688. thing

  1689. Romans chapter

  1690. five verse

  1691. one

  1692. therefore

  1693. since we

  1694. have been

  1695. justified

  1696. by faith

  1697. we have

  1698. peace

  1699. with God

  1700. through our

  1701. Lord

  1702. Jesus Christ

  1703. it's good

  1704. enough to read

  1705. again

  1706. therefore since

  1707. we have been

  1708. justified by

  1709. faith

  1710. we have

  1711. peace with

  1712. God

  1713. through our

  1714. Lord

  1715. Jesus

  1716. Christ

  1717. peace

  1718. with God

  1719. is not

  1720. something you

  1721. earn by

  1722. what you

  1723. do

  1724. it is

  1725. something

  1726. you receive

  1727. by faith

  1728. in what

  1729. Jesus has

  1730. already

  1731. done

  1732. isn't that

  1733. amazing

  1734. this verse

  1735. makes it

  1736. abundantly

  1737. clear

  1738. peace

  1739. with God

  1740. through the

  1741. cross of

  1742. Christ

  1743. is received

  1744. by

  1745. faith

  1746. sinners

  1747. are declared

  1748. righteous

  1749. that's the

  1750. meaning of

  1751. the word

  1752. justified

  1753. sinners

  1754. are declared

  1755. righteous

  1756. by trusting

  1757. in the

  1758. person and

  1759. work of

  1760. Jesus

  1761. the righteous

  1762. one

  1763. that's God's

  1764. plan

  1765. not for us

  1766. to earn our

  1767. way

  1768. but to see

  1769. that Jesus

  1770. did everything

  1771. that we

  1772. couldn't do

  1773. and to trust

  1774. him

  1775. now

  1776. to reconcile

  1777. us to the

  1778. father

  1779. but this

  1780. faith

  1781. it's not

  1782. mere belief

  1783. it's not

  1784. simply

  1785. intellectual

  1786. agreement

  1787. saving

  1788. faith

  1789. trust

  1790. so

  1791. fully

  1792. in the

  1793. finished

  1794. work

  1795. of

  1796. Christ

  1797. that it

  1798. abandons

  1799. all other

  1800. pursuits

  1801. it

  1802. abandons

  1803. all

  1804. sin

  1805. and it

  1806. joyfully

  1807. submits

  1808. to follow

  1809. Jesus

  1810. as Lord

  1811. and Savior

  1812. that's

  1813. saving

  1814. faith

  1815. it's not

  1816. just

  1817. going to

  1818. your Sunday

  1819. school class

  1820. and saying

  1821. okay

  1822. that sounds

  1823. good

  1824. I guess

  1825. I'll be

  1826. a Christian

  1827. no

  1828. it's

  1829. leaving

  1830. everything

  1831. else

  1832. trusting

  1833. so

  1834. fully

  1835. in the

  1836. person

  1837. and work

  1838. of

  1839. Jesus

  1840. that you

  1841. leave

  1842. every other

  1843. religious

  1844. pursuit

  1845. you turn

  1846. away

  1847. from

  1848. every

  1849. sin

  1850. you've

  1851. ever

  1852. committed

  1853. and you

  1854. follow

  1855. him

  1856. joyfully

  1857. as Lord

  1858. and Savior

  1859. of your

  1860. life

  1861. it's an

  1862. act of

  1863. faith

  1864. produced

  1865. by God's

  1866. spirit

  1867. who draws

  1868. the sinner

  1869. convicts

  1870. the sinner

  1871. of their

  1872. sin

  1873. and then

  1874. transforms

  1875. the sinner

  1876. from the

  1877. inside out

  1878. it's what

  1879. Jesus

  1880. said in

  1881. John 3

  1882. is called

  1883. being born

  1884. again

  1885. I want to

  1886. ask you

  1887. have you

  1888. been born

  1889. again

  1890. are you

  1891. actually

  1892. trusting

  1893. fully

  1894. in the

  1895. death

  1896. and resurrection

  1897. of Jesus

  1898. for your

  1899. salvation

  1900. have you

  1901. submitted

  1902. all of your

  1903. life to

  1904. his lordship

  1905. if not

  1906. he invites

  1907. you to

  1908. do it

  1909. now

  1910. Jesus

  1911. extends

  1912. his

  1913. invitation

  1914. Matthew

  1915. 11

  1916. come to

  1917. me

  1918. all

  1919. who

  1920. labor

  1921. and are

  1922. heavy

  1923. laden

  1924. and I

  1925. will

  1926. give

  1927. you

  1928. rest

  1929. take

  1930. my

  1931. yoke

  1932. upon

  1933. you

  1934. and learn

  1935. from me

  1936. for I'm

  1937. gentle

  1938. and lowly

  1939. in heart

  1940. and you

  1941. will find

  1942. rest

  1943. for your

  1944. souls

  1945. for my

  1946. yoke

  1947. is easy

  1948. and my

  1949. burden

  1950. is life

  1951. how do I

  1952. receive this

  1953. peace

  1954. he says

  1955. just come

  1956. to me

  1957. just come

  1958. to me

  1959. and I'll

  1960. give it

  1961. to you

  1962. come

  1963. to me

  1964. John 6

  1965. all that

  1966. the father

  1967. gives me

  1968. will come

  1969. to me

  1970. and whoever

  1971. comes to

  1972. me

  1973. I will

  1974. never

  1975. cast

  1976. out

  1977. never

  1978. think about

  1979. that in

  1980. regards to

  1981. peace

  1982. not only is

  1983. he's saying

  1984. I have

  1985. made

  1986. peace

  1987. with

  1988. you

  1989. but that

  1990. peace

  1991. isn't

  1992. ever

  1993. going to

  1994. be

  1995. taken

  1996. away

  1997. again

  1998. why

  1999. because

  2000. it's

  2001. secured

  2002. by an

  2003. effective

  2004. mechanism

  2005. the cross

  2006. the perfect

  2007. sinless

  2008. son of

  2009. God

  2010. sacrifice

  2011. for your

  2012. sin

  2013. it's all

  2014. paid

  2015. for

  2016. not just

  2017. the things

  2018. you've

  2019. done

  2020. but every

  2021. sin you'll

  2022. ever commit

  2023. in your

  2024. whole life

  2025. covered

  2026. by the

  2027. blood of

  2028. his

  2029. cross

  2030. and he

  2031. says

  2032. you come

  2033. to me

  2034. and I'll

  2035. give you

  2036. rest

  2037. and peace

  2038. and that

  2039. will never

  2040. be taken

  2041. away

  2042. again

  2043. how do

  2044. we receive

  2045. this peace

  2046. by faith

  2047. come to

  2048. Jesus

  2049. believe him

  2050. don't wait

  2051. another

  2052. moment

  2053. well Christmas

  2054. really is a

  2055. season of

  2056. peace

  2057. I hope

  2058. that I

  2059. didn't

  2060. convolute

  2061. that too

  2062. much earlier

  2063. but it's

  2064. only because

  2065. of Jesus

  2066. that it's

  2067. a season

  2068. of peace

  2069. he's the

  2070. grounds for

  2071. our peace

  2072. peace

  2073. and his

  2074. cross

  2075. is the

  2076. mechanism

  2077. that's

  2078. made

  2079. peace

  2080. possible

  2081. and

  2082. because

  2083. of our

  2084. peace

  2085. with

  2086. God

  2087. now

  2088. we can

  2089. actually

  2090. genuinely

  2091. pursue

  2092. peace

  2093. with

  2094. others

  2095. we don't

  2096. do that

  2097. in this

  2098. Christmas

  2099. spirit

  2100. but in

  2101. the power

  2102. of the

  2103. Holy

  2104. Spirit

  2105. as he

  2106. renews

  2107. us

  2108. day

  2109. by day

  2110. so this

  2111. Advent

  2112. season

  2113. as a

  2114. church

  2115. let's

  2116. rejoice

  2117. in the

  2118. peace

  2119. Jesus

  2120. has

  2121. provided

  2122. and let's

  2123. take that

  2124. message of

  2125. true peace

  2126. to the

  2127. world around

  2128. us

  2129. to
