  1. So a wonderful story, isn't it? It's one of my favorites, and I can remember learning this one

  2. so early in my life in Sunday school, and perhaps you can remember it as well. Maybe some of you,

  3. this is the first time you've ever really come across this narrative before in the Bible, and

  4. it's just fascinating. It's one of those stories that's fascinating to learn about. It's so

  5. interesting to picture and to ponder in our minds, but it's so very important for us to understand

  6. the theological truths that are here, and that's what we want to try to do this morning.

  7. Remember the Gideon cycle, it begins in chapter 6, where we're told that the people of Israel did

  8. what was evil in the sight of the Lord. That phrase in the book of Judges always has to do with

  9. bell worship and the things that would come along with that, of course. And the Lord gave them into

  10. the hand of Midian seven years. Now this is one of the shortest periods of oppression that we read

  11. about in the book of Judges, but at the same time it might be the most difficult and devastating season

  12. of oppression that Israel actually faced. Because of Israel's idolatry, God strengthened and allowed

  13. this coalition of semi-nomadic tribes that was led by Midian. It included the Amalekites and the people

  14. of the east as well. This giant coalition of nomadic tribes. God strengthens them, and God allows them for

  15. seven years in a row annually to come into the land of Israel, specifically to the valley of Jezreel,

  16. and they left utter devastation in its wake. The people of Israel would not stay in their homes.

  17. They had to leave their homes. They would run, and they made caves in the mountains that they would

  18. basically hide out in until this coalition left and went back east. And they're often described in

  19. the story as locusts, not just as a description of their immeasurable number, but particularly because

  20. of the devastation they left behind. They came in exactly like locusts that would fly in in a season

  21. of harvest and devour everything of substance that's there. And that's exactly what the Midianites

  22. were doing. They were taking all of the food from Israel. They were taking all of the livestock

  23. from Israel. And this was probably the hardest seven years that we read about in the book of Judges.

  24. Now, in most cases, it takes Israel sometimes decades of oppression before they actually cry out to God.

  25. 20, 30 years, maybe 40 in some cases. The suffering under Midian was such that it only takes them seven years.

  26. Seven years, the shortest time frame we read about. It's so hard. They know that they will not survive

  27. unless God steps in and does something on there. Perhaps. So they cry out to the Lord and God,

  28. his faith wasn't he. He's gracious to raise up and empower this man, Gideon, who becomes his chosen

  29. deliverer. And it's in verse one of chapter seven that we learn and begin to understand what this whole

  30. conflict is really about. Look at verse one again. Then Jerobel, that is Gideon, and all the people who

  31. were with him rose early and encamped beside the spring of Herod. And the camp of Midian was north

  32. of them by the hill of Moreh in the valley. So you don't necessarily have to read chapter six to know

  33. what's happening here. There is an enemy. They are camped near the Mount Moreh. They're in the valley

  34. of Jezreel. There's a lot of them. And then there's Gideon, and he's got his men, and they're just above,

  35. and they're looking down. We can see there is a fight that is about to take place. That's what the author

  36. is setting us up for. But he uses a term here that helps us understand really what it's about.

  37. He starts with a different name for Gideon. That is the name Jerobel. And it's very unusual for the

  38. author to do this. Typically, even in the rest of chapter seven, he's going to call him Gideon. That's

  39. his common name. But at the beginning, he doesn't do that. Why? Why does he call him Jerobel?

  40. Well, if you remember, the name means, if you look back at chapter six, I think somewhere around

  41. verse, let's see, verse 32. It means, let Baal contend against him. That's what the name means.

  42. It's a nickname. It was given to him by the people of his own town because in obedience to the Lord,

  43. Gideon overnight one night took some servants, and he destroyed and beat down the altar that was set up

  44. to Baal and the Asherah that was beside it. He destroyed their pagan worship, or at least the shrine

  45. of their pagan worship. And he pounded it down, he broke it down, and then he built an altar to Yahweh

  46. in its place, and he sacrificed a bull in its place. Well, the people of the town, they're so

  47. incensed by this, they want to kill him. Remember, Gideon's dad steps up for him on his behalf. He

  48. basically saves his life. And what the people do is they assign this nickname for Gideon,

  49. Jerobel. Let Baal contend against him. It was something of a curse against him. Essentially,

  50. the people were saying, okay, we're going to trust that Baal, the God we really want, the God we really

  51. want to serve, that he's going to destroy you for what you've just done to his altar. And so they're

  52. going to watch. They're going to watch and let Baal contend against Gideon. Now, interestingly,

  53. the author uses Jerobel instead of Gideon to start the narrative. And the purpose of that is to remind us

  54. what this whole scene is actually about. In the end, this chapter is not about Israel's conflict

  55. with Midian. It's about God's conflict against Baal worship among his people. That's what this is

  56. really about. Even the battle itself is not so much about God fighting against Midian as much as that it

  57. is about God fighting for Israel. He's wooing them. He's proving himself again to them. And once again,

  58. he's proving his faithfulness to his faithless chosen so that he might bring them back to love

  59. and obedience and worship of him. Okay. That's what this is really about. It's not about Midian.

  60. It's about Baal. It's about the Lord God winning his people back to himself. That's what this is.

  61. Well, the focus of our text is on the actual battle between Midian's massive army and Gideon's

  62. meager 300. But the message of the text is actually quite simple. The message is this.

  63. The battle belongs to the Lord. The battle is the Lord's. Therefore, all the glory is the Lord's as

  64. well. All the glory. He is sovereign over every detail that unfolds in this chapter. And that is

  65. something that should motivate our worship. It should strengthen our hearts and it should lead to us

  66. giving him glory. There's three things that God does in this battle. The first thing that he does

  67. is he reduces the army. He reduces the army. Surprisingly, this is the first thing that he does in preparing

  68. Gideon for the battle is he reduces the army to almost nothing, which is ironic, isn't it? Because

  69. if you look back at chapter six again, particularly verses 34 and 35, it says that the spirit of God

  70. clothed Gideon for the purpose of gathering these men. Do you remember that? After that whole episode with

  71. the altar of Baal, it says that God clothed Gideon with his spirit so that Gideon would have this

  72. divinely empowered mission to gather men for the battle. And now we find God is actually taking all

  73. these men away. So something formerly meant to give Gideon confidence is now removed by the Lord

  74. intentionally. And God used two different methods to actually do this. The first one was he sent the

  75. fearful home. Look at verse three. Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people saying, whoever

  76. is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gideon. 22,000 of the people

  77. return. Only 10,000 remain. Deuteronomy chapter 20, it provides certain provisions for some men who did

    Deuteronomy 20 chapter mention

  78. not have to go to battle. And in most cases, the provisions had to do with the circumstances of their

  79. life. For example, if a young man had betrothed a woman to be his wife, but had not yet married her,

  80. he was exempted from calls to battle. And the purpose of that was so that he could establish his marriage

  81. and his family and continue his family's name rather than go to war, die, and let somebody else do it.

  82. Right? Okay, so, and there are several different provisions that God made for the people. One provision

  83. actually brought tremendous shame. The others were excusable. One brought tremendous shame. And it was that

  84. anyone who was fearful of the battle could not remain and fight. They had to go home. Now, it's not that

  85. some people just aren't afraid to fight. That's not what we're talking. We're talking about those who are

  86. melting in fear, who are trembling in fear. And the reason for that provision was because fear spreads

  87. like gangrene. If you got one person who's just scared to death of what's happening, that's going to

  88. cause a lot of other people to start to be a little afraid themselves. And it can be devastating to an army.

  89. So God makes this provision. If people are just completely afraid, don't let them go to the battle.

  90. Now, whether or not God is doing that in this instance, I don't know. I don't think so. It could just be that

  91. God wants Gideon to see exactly how much fear is out there among his own men. In any case, fear is a major

  92. theme of this story. Fear and its effects on our faith. And throughout the Gideon narrative, we see it over and over

  93. again. And it's going to come into play in a major way with the Midianites in just a moment. And in the

  94. end of this, 22,000 of the 32,000 left. How devastating that is. You got 32,000 men, two-thirds of them

  95. leave like that. Well, God wasn't finished dwindling the army. There was still more to reduce it now. Look

  96. at verse four. The Lord said to Gideon, the people are still too many. Take them down to the water and

  97. I will test them for you there. Anyone of whom I say to you, this one shall go with you, shall go with

  98. you. Anyone of whom I say, this one shall not go with you, shall not go. So he brought the people to

  99. the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, everyone who laps the water with his tongue as a dog laps,

  100. you shall set him by himself. Now this next phrase, this is a clarifying statement on the first one.

  101. This is not a second condition. This is a clarification of the first condition. Okay. So,

  102. and then he says, likewise, everyone who kneels down to drink. Well, you can't get down and drink water

  103. like a dog without kneeling down. So that's essentially what's happening in this verse. And God's

  104. saying, anyone who kneels down and puts their face down like that, just set them to the side,

  105. mark them. And then he goes on to say in verse six, and the number of those who lapped putting

  106. their hands to their mouth, as opposed to actually putting their face down to the water, was only 300

  107. men. All the rest knelt down. And the Lord said to Gideon, verse seven, with the 300 men who lapped,

  108. I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand. Let all the others go home.

  109. And this second test is interesting. It's interesting because it seems so arbitrary.

  110. It just seems so random. Gideon's told to have them drink some water and just mark the ones who

  111. drink in a particular way. And whoever drank with that method was sent home. And that leaves just 300

  112. men to fight this battle against what Gideon sees as an innumerable amount of people.

  113. Now, through the years, people have tried to suggest that there was a method to God's madness in this,

  114. and that the method was he was preserving those who were truly courageous and those who demonstrated

  115. alertness to the task. In other words, what they would say is that what God is doing here is he is

  116. limiting the army to the best of the best, so that only the best of the best fighters are the ones who

  117. are going to go against this army. That actually works against the text here. That's not what's

  118. happening here. This is all about the numbers is what this is. God sends 22,000 home because he knows

  119. 22,000 of them are afraid. He does this test at the water because he knows what's going to be left

  120. over. It's just very few men. It has nothing to do with their courage. It has nothing to do with

  121. their alertness. It has everything to do with the numbers. God was reducing the army to nearly nothing.

  122. And this was just the way that he chose to do it. Now, the 32,000 that Gideon began with,

  123. that's still a weak army compared to the Midianite coalition. But now it's just 300

  124. plus Gideon. And the question is, why? Why does God actually do this? Why does he whittle it down to

  125. 300 people? And the answer is in verse two. The Lord said to Gideon, the people with you are too

  126. many for me to give the Midianites into their hand. Now that seems backward, doesn't it? We would expect

  127. God to say, you don't have enough to do this. We better get some more men. That's not what he says.

  128. He says, no, you got too many men for this. You can't be delivered with this many men. We're going to have to

  129. take some of them out. And here's his reason. Lest Israel boast over me, saying my own hand has saved me.

  130. So knowing Israel's proclivity for ignoring God's presence and power, God strips away

  131. everything that Gideon and his army could possibly trust in except God himself. That's what's happening here.

  132. Even with 32,000 men, Israel was operating from a position of weakness, but God knew their pride.

  133. Their pride was such that if they were to defeat the Midianites, even with just 32,000 men, they would

  134. take glory for themselves. But God wants them to see clearly that this battle, it belongs to him,

  135. that he is the one who will bring salvation to his people. But Israel would have been quick

  136. to take the glory that belongs to God alone. So God needs to expose the depths of their weakness here

  137. so that they might understand the truth of his gracious work on their behalf and thereby glorify him.

  138. Dale Ralph Davis has a helpful statement about this. He says that the weakness of Israel in this moment

  139. is not a superficial weakness. It is their real condition, he says. And he goes on,

  140. so in Christian experience, it is important to define what weakness is not. Weakness does not mean

  141. that you are a glob of spiritual jello that flops at God's feet. It does not mean that you whine a lot,

  142. even though you may whine a lot. It does not mean that you look pale, even though many of us look a

  143. little pale today. It does not mean that you have the flu. You may not feel weak at all, he says.

  144. It has little to do with how you feel. You do not feel weak. You are weak. It's your genuine condition.

  145. That is, you are stripped of all human resources and forced to lean upon God alone.

  146. That is the true nature of our weakness. That we are stripped of all human resources to accomplish

  147. anything of eternal value, of our salvific value in our lives. And we must lean on God alone.

  148. Because like Israel, we are so often prone to ignore God's sovereign work in our lives.

  149. And we ought not be surprised when we get to various circumstances where it seems like

  150. God has stripped us of everything we feel like we need

  151. so that we can trust in nothing else but Him.

  152. But even if God doesn't do that,

  153. even if He doesn't strip us the way that He strips the army in this moment,

  154. He wants us to see that the battle is His.

  155. He wants us to trust Him, not our own devices.

  156. He wants us to glorify Him

  157. rather than lift up our own egos.

  158. Now whether it's in relation to your salvation,

  159. or circumstances related to your spiritual growth,

  160. or maybe just your progress in life,

  161. you must reckon at some point with the reality of your own insufficiency.

  162. Because it's only when you reckon with your own insufficiency

  163. that you'll be able to grasp God's power and love at work in your life.

  164. God wants you to understand the work that He's doing in you.

  165. And often it takes Him reducing our resources to nothing

  166. before we learn to truly trust Him.

  167. And that's what He's doing with Gideon,

  168. and He's doing it with the army itself.

  169. That's the first thing God does.

  170. He does the opposite of what we would do.

  171. He reduces His army.

  172. Number two, God strengthens His servant.

  173. He strengthens His servant.

  174. This is my favorite part.

  175. I want you to take a moment and just imagine

  176. how absolutely deflating this must have been for Gideon.

  177. If you've been with us through the study,

  178. you know Gideon's already prone to fear.

  179. He is in constant need of reassurance from God.

  180. Even after God clothes him with the power of His Spirit

  181. so that he might gather these 32,000 men together,

  182. he still goes back to God after that.

  183. And he has this whole sign test that he has to do.

  184. He lays out his fleece for God on two different occasions.

  185. That's not because he's faithful.

  186. That's because he's fearful.

  187. He needs constant reassurance.

  188. That's who he was.

  189. Now, this chapter opens with Gideon and his men

  190. getting up early and positioning themselves for this battle.

  191. This is probably Gideon's most confident moment

  192. in the whole story, at least before his sin at the end.

  193. This is Gideon's most confident moment.

  194. That is the morning before God reduces the army.

  195. He's done the test.

  196. He's seen the fleece.

  197. He's gathered the men.

  198. And now he's starting to feel some confidence about,

  199. okay, maybe God is actually going to do this thing.

  200. And what's the first thing that God does?

  201. He takes away all the confidence.

  202. He takes away everything that Gideon was trusting in.

  203. In that moment, everything that he thought

  204. was going to work for him.

  205. How deflating.

  206. How miserable Gideon must have been.

  207. But this situation, it allows us to see something

  208. truly wonderful about the Lord.

  209. And that is his personal care for his servant.

  210. Now, that's you.

  211. That's just not spiritual leaders.

  212. That is anyone who belongs to the Lord in Christ Jesus,

  213. of course, as we look from a New Testament perspective.

  214. We've been doing this all throughout the Gideon study.

  215. We've tried to keep one eye on the big picture

  216. of God's salvation of Israel, of his people as a whole.

  217. And by application, we've tried to keep one eye

  218. on God's gospel work globally in the global church, okay?

  219. But we're trying to keep our other eye

  220. on God's unique work in the individual person

  221. that is Gideon in this story.

  222. And what this does for us at this moment

  223. is it helps us to remember

  224. that God not only is doing this big work

  225. that we may or may not feel like we're a part of,

  226. but he is doing a unique and particular work

  227. in you, in me.

  228. He knows us.

  229. He knows our weaknesses.

  230. He knows the intricacies of what's in our mind

  231. and in our hearts that no one else may know.

  232. And he's doing a particular work in us.

  233. And we see that come forward here

  234. in this scenario with Gideon.

  235. It's God who takes the initiative

  236. to strengthen Gideon here.

  237. And it's one of my favorite parts.

  238. Look at verse nine.

  239. That same night, that is the night

  240. that he reduces the army.

  241. God wastes no time here.

  242. He says to Gideon, arise, go down against the camp,

  243. for I have given it into your hand.

  244. Now stop there for a second.

  245. What's God saying?

  246. He's saying it's time.

  247. It's time to go fight the battle.

  248. It's done.

  249. Victory is secure.

  250. But now notice what he says.

  251. But if you're afraid to go down,

  252. that is afraid to go and fight the battle

  253. at this very moment,

  254. I want you to go down to the camp.

  255. Take Porah, your servant, with you.

  256. And you shall hear what they say.

  257. And afterward, your hands shall be strengthened

  258. to go down against the camp.

  259. And here's what I love about this.

  260. Going down to the camp with Porah is optional.

  261. This is not a command from God.

  262. It's conditional.

  263. Gideon, if you're too afraid

  264. to go fight this battle at this moment,

  265. just go down on your own.

  266. Take Porah with you.

  267. You don't have to go by yourself.

  268. There's loneliness in Gideon's position right now.

  269. Take Porah with you.

  270. And I'm going to do something

  271. that will build your confidence

  272. if you're afraid.

  273. And what I love about it

  274. is there's no response from Gideon.

  275. All we read in the next part of the verse is,

  276. then he went down with Porah.

  277. There's no question he's afraid.

  278. I love it.

  279. He goes down and he finds a place

  280. to hide at the outpost of the armed men.

  281. Isn't this wonderful?

  282. Not only does God declare

  283. that he's already given the Midianites

  284. into Gideon's hand,

  285. he's done that a number of times

  286. through the story already,

  287. but he very tenderly,

  288. very patiently allows

  289. for Gideon's anxieties to be soothed.

  290. Now, those of you who are parents

  291. know what it's like

  292. to have to soothe an anxiety

  293. that may or may not be rational.

  294. You can tell your kids 100 times,

  295. this is safe or this is good

  296. and I've taken care of it

  297. or whatever it is.

  298. You can jump.

  299. I promise I'll catch you.

  300. And they're still going to be

  301. plagued with anxieties, right?

  302. Now, if you're like me,

  303. you eventually grow a little impatient.

  304. You say, would you just jump already?

  305. Or whatever the thing is.

  306. Notice the tenderness that God has here.

  307. He has fought this fear

  308. with Gideon the whole time,

  309. but he never loses his patience.

  310. He never loses his tenderness.

  311. Knowing his fear,

  312. God gives Gideon another sign

  313. that Gideon didn't even ask for.

  314. And Gideon's quick to take advantage of it.

  315. And the sign comes with a promise,

  316. the promise in verse 11.

  317. What Gideon is privileged to hear

  318. will give him the strength

  319. that he needs to move forward full of faith.

  320. Now, it's worth noting at this point

  321. that there is a massive difference

  322. between having no faith

  323. and having a weak faith.

  324. In fact, it's not just a massive difference.

  325. It's an eternal difference.

  326. No faith would have led Gideon

  327. to go home with the other

  328. 20 or 32,700 men, right?

  329. If he didn't have any faith,

  330. he would have said,

  331. this is ridiculous.

  332. There's no way this will ever work.

  333. I'm done with it.

  334. But he doesn't do that.

  335. That's not his position at all.

  336. Despite his fear,

  337. he stays and he trusts the Lord

  338. with each step.

  339. Now, it takes every step,

  340. but he trusts the Lord with every step.

  341. Now, we often think that faith

  342. is the absence of fear,

  343. but that's not true.

  344. Faith is not the absence of fear.

  345. Faith is better understood

  346. as perseverance in the midst of fear.

  347. And that's what we see in Gideon.

  348. His faith may have been weak.

  349. Still, it's not the strength of our faith,

  350. but the object of our faith

  351. that saves us.

  352. He may have trembled

  353. as he walked down the hill

  354. to the outside of the camp,

  355. but he still went.

  356. We think about this sometimes

  357. in relation to God's work of salvation

  358. and justification by faith.

  359. It might have been Mark Dever

  360. that I heard one time

  361. give an illustration

  362. about the way faith works

  363. and the life of a believer.

  364. It's like two people

  365. who are getting on an airplane.

  366. One of them is completely comfortable.

  367. They have no problems.

  368. They have no anxiety whatsoever.

  369. They get on the plane.

  370. They know that they're going to get

  371. where they need to go.

  372. The second person

  373. is the complete opposite, right?

  374. The second person gets on the plane.

  375. They're just an absolute wreck.

  376. They're scared for their life.

  377. They're not sure

  378. if they can trust the pilot.

  379. They're not sure

  380. if they can trust the mechanics

  381. to actually put this thing together.

  382. They're not sure

  383. if the side of the plane

  384. is going to blow off

  385. like it did with the one airline

  386. this week, right?

  387. They don't know

  388. if this is going to be a convertible

  389. or if it's going to be

  390. just like a normal aircraft.

  391. They don't know.

  392. And they're scared to death.

  393. Now, both of them get on the plane.

  394. Right?

  395. One's faith is stronger than the other,

  396. but they both get on the plane.

  397. And they both get to their destination.

  398. One may get there

  399. with a little more joy

  400. and comfort than the other,

  401. but they both get there.

  402. And the point is,

  403. it's not the strength of their faith

  404. that gets them where it is

  405. that they need to go.

  406. It's the object of their faith.

  407. And in this case,

  408. it's not whether or not

  409. Gideon was really full of faith.

  410. It's the fact that he had enough faith

  411. to trust God every step.

  412. And anyway,

  413. a lot of times in your life,

  414. as a believer,

  415. you're going to feel that.

  416. Where you're not exactly sure

  417. what to think about

  418. five or six steps

  419. down the road in your life.

  420. But all you know

  421. is I can trust God enough

  422. to take the next step.

  423. Well, that's good.

  424. Keep taking those steps.

  425. Keep moving forward.

  426. Perhaps you're at one

  427. of those moments spiritually

  428. where God has stripped you

  429. of everything you can possibly

  430. trust except Him.

  431. You're struggling to live

  432. with a confident faith.

  433. And you need to let this

  434. be an encouragement to you

  435. that God intends to strengthen you

  436. in the way that He strengthened Gideon.

  437. Weak or not,

  438. you just need to take

  439. the next step forward

  440. in obedience to God.

  441. You need to persevere

  442. through the fear

  443. that threatens to freeze you

  444. and turn you around.

  445. And I know

  446. the testimony of the Scripture

  447. is that God will meet you there.

  448. I want you to look

  449. at the next part.

  450. Verse 13.

  451. What is it that happens

  452. with Gideon once he gets

  453. down the hill?

  454. When Gideon came,

  455. behold, a man was telling

  456. a dream to his comrade

  457. and said,

  458. Behold, I dreamed a dream

  459. and behold,

  460. a cake of barley bread

  461. tumbled into the camp

  462. of Midian,

  463. came to the tent

  464. and struck it

  465. so that it fell

  466. and turned it upside down

  467. so that the tent lay flat.

  468. And his comrade answered,

  469. This is no other than

  470. the sword of Gideon,

  471. the son of Joash,

  472. a man of Israel.

  473. God has given

  474. into his hand

  475. Midian and all the camp.

  476. And as soon as Gideon

  477. heard the telling

  478. of the dream

  479. and its interpretation,

  480. he worshipped.

  481. And he returned

  482. to the camp of Israel

  483. and said,

  484. Arise,

  485. for the Lord

  486. has given the host

  487. of Midian

  488. into your hand.

  489. Well, let's just walk

  490. through this

  491. for just a moment.

  492. Gideon is hiding

  493. outside the Midianite camp.

  494. And he overhears

  495. a watchman

  496. in the middle

  497. of the night

  498. describe a bizarre dream

  499. that involved

  500. a giant loaf of bread

  501. tumbling down the hill.

  502. It hit a tent.

  503. The tent flipped over

  504. and went flat.

  505. That's a weird dream.

  506. So weird

  507. that I don't know

  508. that I would share it.

  509. But this guy shares it.

  510. He shares it

  511. with his buddy

  512. and then his buddy

  513. interprets the dream.

  514. There's nothing

  515. facetious about this

  516. at all.

  517. There's nothing sarcastic

  518. about this interpretation.

  519. This is,

  520. God is working

  521. through these men.

  522. This is a legitimate

  523. interpretation

  524. from the perspective

  525. of this watchman.

  526. And he says,

  527. this has to have

  528. something to do

  529. with Gideon

  530. who we heard

  531. is up there

  532. on the hill

  533. with these men.

  534. God's going to deliver

  535. us into his hand.

  536. Now Gideon hears

  537. all of this.

  538. That's what's interesting

  539. about it,

  540. isn't it?

  541. This was the sign

  542. that God had promised.

  543. And it did exactly

  544. what God said

  545. it would do.

  546. It strengthened Gideon

  547. for the battle.

  548. But what exactly

  549. is it about the dream

  550. that makes the difference

  551. for Gideon?

  552. What is it?

  553. It caused him

  554. to realize

  555. that God

  556. had brought upon

  557. the Midianites

  558. this heightened

  559. state of anxiety.

  560. anxiety.

  561. It's reminiscent

  562. of the Canaanites

  563. back in Joshua,

  564. in the book of Joshua.

  565. They heard

  566. of what God

  567. had done

  568. for the Israelites

  569. and it says

  570. that their hearts

  571. melted with fear.

  572. And God

  573. has gone

  574. before Gideon

  575. and he has caused

  576. that same experience

  577. to come on

  578. the Midianites

  579. so that their hearts

  580. are melting

  581. with fear.

  582. From their perspective

  583. that may not even

  584. be rational.

  585. but nonetheless

  586. they are operating

  587. at a heightened

  588. level of anxiety.

  589. What Barry Webb

  590. says,

  591. what Gideon

  592. finds out

  593. is that things

  594. are not as they seem

  595. because the Midianites

  596. too are frightened.

  597. In fact,

  598. they seem to believe

  599. the very thing

  600. that Gideon himself

  601. has been finding

  602. it so hard to believe.

  603. That God

  604. has given

  605. the whole Midianite

  606. camp

  607. into his hands.

  608. And this

  609. does something

  610. amazing in Gideon.

  611. The effects

  612. are dramatic.

  613. Having this

  614. renewed confidence

  615. in the Word of God.

  616. Gideon's instinct,

  617. look at verse 15,

  618. is to first

  619. worship

  620. and then

  621. declare

  622. his confidence

  623. in the Lord

  624. to others.

  625. Now remember,

  626. God's strengthening

  627. his servant here.

  628. His servant

  629. is fearful.

  630. And what does God do?

  631. He gives him

  632. revelation.

  633. He opens up

  634. his plan

  635. for Gideon's

  636. understanding.

  637. He does it

  638. in a unique way.

  639. And what's Gideon's

  640. first instinct?

  641. He worships the Lord

  642. in that moment

  643. and then he runs

  644. back to the camp

  645. where his 300 men are

  646. and look at the confidence

  647. that he has.

  648. Verse 15,

  649. arise,

  650. the Lord

  651. has given

  652. the host of Midian

  653. into your hand.

  654. The victory

  655. has already been

  656. won.

  657. Let's go

  658. get it.

  659. We don't see

  660. Gideon like that

  661. anywhere else

  662. in this whole story

  663. except here.

  664. Why?

  665. Because of what

  666. God's doing.

  667. Now with this

  668. in mind,

  669. perhaps

  670. a good test

  671. for knowing

  672. the nature

  673. of your faith

  674. is to consider

  675. the nature

  676. of your personal

  677. worship

  678. and your public

  679. confidence

  680. in the Lord

  681. God.

  682. think about that

  683. for just a moment.

  684. You say,

  685. what is my faith

  686. really like?

  687. Because sometimes

  688. it's hard to figure

  689. that out,

  690. isn't it?

  691. But what's your

  692. worship like?

  693. What's your

  694. declared confidence

  695. in the Lord like?

  696. Do you truly

  697. worship from the heart

  698. Sunday by Sunday?

  699. Are you eager

  700. in the gathering

  701. of God's people

  702. to sing to one another,

  703. our sins,

  704. they are many,

  705. but His mercy

  706. is more?

  707. If you don't sing

  708. that with confidence,

  709. then you probably

  710. don't have a very

  711. strong faith.

  712. What about your

  713. personal worship?

  714. Do you have any

  715. private worship

  716. to the Lord?

  717. Time in His Word?

  718. Time in prayer?

  719. Maybe time in song?

  720. Time where you are

  721. fellowshipping,

  722. communing with your God

  723. because you believe

  724. Him,

  725. because you're

  726. confident in Him.

  727. What's your

  728. worship like?

  729. Do you ever

  730. find yourself

  731. declaring confidence

  732. in God

  733. to other people?

  734. Do you ever

  735. urge them

  736. to trust

  737. and obey the Lord

  738. because you found

  739. Him yourself

  740. to be faithful

  741. and worthy

  742. of their

  743. worship?

  744. I think that's

  745. a helpful text

  746. because the

  747. natural result

  748. here

  749. of God

  750. strengthening

  751. Gideon

  752. through His Word

  753. is worship

  754. and public

  755. praise.

  756. Now,

  757. God doesn't

  758. reveal all of

  759. His plan

  760. to us all

  761. the time.

  762. We know

  763. that.

  764. And we

  765. can't always

  766. expect

  767. God to do

  768. for us

  769. what He did

  770. for Gideon

  771. in this passage

  772. as far as

  773. just kind of

  774. laying it out

  775. there,

  776. right?

  777. He doesn't

  778. always do

  779. that.

  780. But He

  781. has made

  782. some things

  783. very clear

  784. through the

  785. revelation

  786. of His Word,

  787. particularly

  788. His plan

  789. of salvation.

  790. If you

  791. have eyes

  792. to see

  793. and ears

  794. to hear

  795. the gospel

  796. of Jesus,

  797. your faith

  798. in Him

  799. will radically

  800. transform

  801. your worship

  802. and your

  803. evangelism.

  804. I'm not

  805. talking about

  806. those of us

  807. who know

  808. what the gospel

  809. is and that

  810. we can tell

  811. you what it

  812. is or we

  813. are familiar

  814. enough with

  815. the theology

  816. of it that

  817. we can explain

  818. it to you.

  819. That's not

  820. what I'm

  821. talking about.

  822. I'm talking

  823. about those

  824. of you who

  825. have ears

  826. to hear.

  827. You have

  828. come to know

  829. Christ

  830. personally

  831. through the

  832. gospel.

  833. When that

  834. happens,

  835. your faith

  836. in God

  837. is strengthened

  838. in a way

  839. that only

  840. God can

  841. strengthen it.

  842. And when

  843. your faith

  844. is strengthened

  845. in the way

  846. that only

  847. God can

  848. strengthen it,

  849. it radically

  850. transforms

  851. your worship.

  852. Your Sunday

  853. worship is

  854. different.

  855. Your desire

  856. for private

  857. worship

  858. day by day

  859. is different.

  860. Your declaration

  861. of confidence

  862. in God

  863. is different.

  864. Your evangelism

  865. is different.

  866. Why?

  867. Because in

  868. the revelation

  869. of God

  870. through His

  871. word,

  872. you have

  873. come to

  874. know His

  875. Son in

  876. the gospel.

  877. And God

  878. has done

  879. this work

  880. in you.

  881. And we

  882. see this

  883. in seed

  884. form with

  885. Gideon

  886. right here.

  887. But God

  888. hasn't only

  889. revealed His

  890. plan of

  891. salvation.

  892. He's made

  893. that abundantly

  894. clear to

  895. us.

  896. But there's

  897. a lot of

  898. other things

  899. in the

  900. scriptures

  901. that God

  902. has made

  903. abundantly

  904. clear.

  905. Things about

  906. who He

  907. is.

  908. Things about

  909. how He

  910. desires for

  911. us to

  912. live and

  913. glorify Him.

  914. And this

  915. kind of

  916. revelation,

  917. we're not

  918. talking about

  919. subjective

  920. revelation that

  921. I just wake

  922. up one morning

  923. and I think,

  924. well, God

  925. has told me

  926. this.

  927. You can't

  928. trust that.

  929. We're talking

  930. about the

  931. written Word

  932. of God,

  933. our confidence

  934. in the

  935. scriptures.

  936. And what

  937. does it

  938. tell us?

  939. The

  940. revelation of

  941. the Word

  942. of God.

  943. It will

  944. strengthen

  945. your faith

  946. to persevere

  947. even when

  948. faithfulness

  949. will cost

  950. you everything.

  951. Now let's

  952. put that

  953. in some

  954. shoe leather

  955. to that for

  956. just a moment.

  957. When you

  958. have a

  959. confidence in

  960. the Word

  961. of God

  962. and a

  963. confidence in

  964. the faithfulness

  965. of God,

  966. you will

  967. stand for

  968. His truth

  969. culturally

  970. even when

  971. the culture

  972. is vehemently

  973. against you.

  974. Whether that

  975. be in the

  976. hot topic

  977. issues of

  978. our day

  979. with the

  980. LGBTQ plus

  981. movement,

  982. the sexual

  983. revolution,

  984. whether that

  985. be through

  986. issues of

  987. abortion,

  988. whether it

  989. be through

  990. issues of

  991. ethical and

  992. moral considerations

  993. and other

  994. ways of our

  995. life,

  996. you will

  997. stand

  998. faithful

  999. if you

  1000. are confident

  1001. in the

  1002. faithfulness

  1003. of God

  1004. and His

  1005. Word.

  1006. Even if it

  1007. costs you

  1008. everything,

  1009. and at some

  1010. point,

  1011. it's going to

  1012. cost us a

  1013. lot.

  1014. At some

  1015. point,

  1016. it's going to

  1017. cost us a

  1018. lot.

  1019. If faith

  1020. comes through

  1021. hearing the

  1022. Word of

  1023. Christ,

  1024. that's what

  1025. Romans 10

  1026. 17 plainly

  1027. says.

  1028. Faith comes

  1029. by hearing,

  1030. hearing through

  1031. the Word of

  1032. Christ.

  1033. That is the

  1034. Bible,

  1035. that's the

  1036. Scriptures.

  1037. then it is

  1038. through the

  1039. Scriptures that

  1040. God intends to

  1041. strengthen you

  1042. and produce in

  1043. you the proper

  1044. worship and

  1045. zeal for His

  1046. glory.

  1047. You say,

  1048. you know,

  1049. I feel a lot

  1050. like Gideon.

  1051. I've heard the

  1052. call of God to

  1053. salvation.

  1054. I've got that.

  1055. But when it

  1056. comes to the

  1057. details of my

  1058. life and my

  1059. spiritual walk,

  1060. I struggle.

  1061. I struggle with

  1062. confidence in the

  1063. Lord and I

  1064. struggle with

  1065. confidence in what

  1066. the Bible says and

  1067. I struggle in all

  1068. of these ways.

  1069. And let me just

  1070. tell you, if we

  1071. follow this

  1072. progression the way

  1073. that the Scripture

  1074. lies it out, the

  1075. solution for you is

1076. just to go back to

  1077. the Word.

  1078. It is in the

  1079. revelation of God

  1080. that the Spirit of

  1081. God does His work

  1082. in us.

  1083. That strengthens our

1084. faith in a way that

  1085. we don't understand

  1086. all the time.

  1087. That's the thing

  1088. about this.

  1089. This is a divine

  1090. work of God in

  1091. us.

1092. And He has a way

  1093. that He does it.

1094. He does it by His

  1095. Spirit through His

  1096. Word.

  1097. But it's still His

  1098. work.

  1099. So what we need

1100. to do is get back

  1101. to the Word and

  1102. let the Spirit do

  1103. the work through

  1104. the Word and

  1105. prayer that He has

  1106. determined to do.

  1107. And through that

  1108. commitment I think

  1109. we'll find that

  1110. God strengthening us

1111. in the way that He

  1112. strengthened Gideon.

  1113. Third thing God

  1114. does.

  1115. First thing He does

  1116. He reduces the

  1117. army.

  1118. Then He strengthens

  1119. His servant.

  1120. Third thing, and

  1121. this is a simple

  1122. thing, He displays

  1123. His victory.

  1124. He displays His

  1125. victory.

  1126. So Gideon's got a

  1127. renewed faith now.

  1128. He returns to the

  1129. camp.

  1130. But he comes back

  1131. with a completely

  1132. unconventional plan of

  1133. attack.

  1134. He divides the men

  1135. into three companies.

1136. He gave each man a

  1137. trumpet, a jar, and a

  1138. torch.

  1139. Hardly the things you

  1140. would expect for a

  1141. battle of this nature.

  1142. That's what He gives

  1143. them.

  1144. And then He just

  1145. tells them, whatever I

  1146. do, you do.

  1147. Okay?

  1148. Just trust me.

  1149. Look at verse 19.

  1150. So Gideon and the

  1151. hundred men who were

1152. with him came to the

  1153. outskirts of the camp

1154. at the beginning of the

  1155. middle watch when they

1156. had just set the watch

  1157. and they blew the

  1158. trumpets, smashed the

1159. jars that were in their

  1160. hands.

  1161. That's Gideon and the

  1162. men with him.

  1163. Then the three companies

  1164. blew the trumpets

  1165. together and they broke

  1166. the jars.

  1167. They held in their

  1168. left hands the torches

1169. and in their right hands

  1170. the trumpets to blow.

  1171. And they cried out,

1172. A sword for the Lord

  1173. and for Gideon.

  1174. Then every man stood

  1175. in his place around

1176. the camp and all the

  1177. army ran.

  1178. They cried out and

  1179. fled and when they

  1180. blew the three hundred

  1181. trumpets the Lord set

  1182. every man's sword

  1183. against his comrade

  1184. and against all the

  1185. army and the army

  1186. fled.

  1187. This is amazing.

  1188. Amazing.

  1189. Ironically, the men

1190. yell, a sword for the

  1191. Lord and for Gideon.

1192. While none of them are

  1193. said to have actually

  1194. had a sword.

1195. We don't even know if

  1196. they had weaponry at

  1197. this point.

  1198. The only weapons that

  1199. are mentioned in the

1200. text were in the hands

  1201. of the Midianites.

1202. Not only are they in a

  1203. heightened state of

  1204. anxiety, it's the

1205. middle of the night and

  1206. they're all asleep.

  1207. Now you know what

  1208. that's like.

  1209. This morning, Ashlyn

1210. had told me last night

1211. I want to ride with you

1212. to go to the school

  1213. tomorrow morning.

  1214. I said, okay, I'll

  1215. come wake you up.

  1216. So this morning,

  1217. whatever time it was,

  1218. I went into the

  1219. girl's room and Ashlyn

  1220. was still asleep and

  1221. she was sleeping soundly.

  1222. And I just nudged her a

1223. little bit and I said,

  1224. Ashlyn, it's time to

  1225. get up.

  1226. And the expression that

1227. I got in that moment

  1228. was, what?

  1229. What?

1230. Now she reacts that way

  1231. because she's in a deep

  1232. sleep and she's just

  1233. been awakened and when

  1234. you're awakened in a deep

  1235. sleep by somebody else

  1236. intentionally, you don't

  1237. exactly know where you

1238. are or what you're doing

  1239. and it's a little

  1240. frightening in that

  1241. moment.

1242. Now take that and apply

1243. it to someone who's just

  1244. definitely afraid of

  1245. everything in their life

  1246. at that moment.

  1247. They're afraid that at

  1248. any moment, Gideon and

1249. this army is going to

  1250. come down and they're

1251. going to kill us all.

1252. And now all of a sudden,

1253. all that they hear are

  1254. trumpets blowing and men

  1255. screaming and they look

1256. out and they just see

  1257. they're encircled by

  1258. torches and they're just

  1259. trying to figure out

  1260. what's going on.

1261. It's dark and what do

  1262. they do?

  1263. It tells us.

  1264. Look at verse 22.

1265. When they blew the 300

  1266. trumpets, the Lord set

  1267. every man's sword against

  1268. his comrade and against

1269. the army and the army

  1270. fled.

  1271. God had gone before

1272. Gideon to create in the

1273. enemy a sense of fear

  1274. and confusion that led

  1275. to their self-destruction.

  1276. They killed each other.

1277. Gideon and his men, they

  1278. didn't have to do

  1279. anything.

1280. You know what they got

  1281. to do?

1282. They got to stand on the

1283. outskirts of the camp and

1284. watch God do God's work.

1285. That's what they got to do.

1286. And why did they get to do

  1287. that?

  1288. Because they were just

  1289. faithful enough.

  1290. They were just faithful

1291. enough to take the next

1292. step and go down the hill

1293. and do the thing that

  1294. Gideon said to do.

  1295. And because of their

  1296. faithfulness, what they got

1297. to see on display was not

  1298. their power.

1299. They got to see God's

  1300. power.

1301. Now, do you see how little

1302. this had to do with Gideon

  1303. and his 300 men?

1304. This is God all the way

  1305. through.

  1306. God calls the man.

  1307. God gathers the army.

1308. God reduces the army and he

  1309. does it his way.

1310. Then he strengthens his man.

1311. He gives him a plan.

1312. He goes before him in the

1313. plan and he does the work

1314. just so that his man can see

  1315. it happen.

  1316. That's amazing.

  1317. They were definitely

1318. instruments in the hand of

  1319. God.

  1320. That is undoubted.

1321. And the Lord was gracious to

1322. use them in his work.

  1323. That's for sure.

  1324. But their simple faithfulness

1325. allowed them to stand on the

1326. outside and just watch God

  1327. work.

1328. They were participants in God's

1329. work so that they might see

1330. that it is indeed God's work

  1331. and give him glory.

1332. Now, I think this is an important

  1333. takeaway for Christians here.

  1334. God doesn't need us.

1335. We're thinking, we may be

1336. thinking about salvation and the

1337. gospel and we can make those

  1338. applications too.

1339. But primarily we're thinking as

1340. Christians, the work that God

1341. has called us to do in

1342. evangelism and raising our kids,

  1343. perhaps in just everyday

1344. faithfulness, we know that God

1345. doesn't need us to do his work.

1346. But he is pleased to use us in

  1347. his work.

1348. And he does use us.

1349. And in the process of that work,

1350. it's easy to be gripped by fear

  1351. and anxiety.

1352. That will be a common occurrence

1353. in our lives until the day that

  1354. we die.

1355. But when we're faithful to trust

1356. and obey the Lord, we are blessed

1357. to witness him do the work that

  1358. only he can do.

1359. Because in the end, the battle is

  1360. the Lord's.

1361. And so is the glory.

1362. We can apply this in a lot of

  1363. different ways.

1364. Think about it as a parent.

1365. How fearful of a prospect is it

1366. to be responsible for other human

  1367. beings?

  1368. Not only physically.

1369. In fact, that might be the easier

  1370. part.

1371. How daunting of a task is it, Andy,

1372. to wake up every day knowing that

1373. your responsibility is to raise

1374. these kids in the discipline and

1375. the admonition of the Lord.

1376. Which means that you're going to

1377. yourself have to be disciplined

1378. in the truth of God and the

  1379. admonition of the Lord.

1380. And then you're going to have to be

1381. strong enough in that discipline

1382. to actually communicate it to

  1383. others in a way that's helpful

  1384. and it's consistent and it's

  1385. faithful and truthful.

1386. And those of us with kids know that

1387. we can get to the end of that and

1388. we can say this is an impossible

  1389. task.

1390. And we can be gripped by fear in

  1391. that.

1392. Is anything ever going to happen

  1393. with my kid?

1394. What's the Lord going to do here?

1395. Can he do anything here?

1396. And really what the Lord's calling

  1397. us to is faithfulness.

1398. Because you can't do the work that

  1399. only he can do.

1400. And he's calling you to be

1401. faithful and if you will be

  1402. faithful.

  1403. Not perfect.

  1404. Faithful.

1405. Typically he's going to let you

  1406. watch him work.

1407. That work may not always happen in

1408. the way that you envision.

1409. It may be a work that he's doing

  1410. in you.

1411. Maybe even more than what he's

1412. doing in the people that you care

  1413. for.

1414. But you will be able to see him

  1415. work when you're faithful.

  1416. That's just one category.

1417. We can think about this in our

  1418. evangelism, can't we?

1419. You've got people in your life,

1420. John, that you're trying to win

1421. to the Lord and some of the

1422. things that you're doing with

  1423. media.

1424. You can get to the end of that.

1425. I can testify to this personally

  1426. as a pastor who's pastored for

1427. four years preaching the gospel

  1428. the best.

1429. I know how to do it.

1430. Sunday by Sunday seems very

1431. little conversion as a result of

  1432. that.

  1433. I think that I don't know what to

  1434. do.

1435. Like this is an impossible task.

1436. It feels like those in your

1437. talk sometimes with just our

  1438. evangelism.

1439. But we're not called to provide

  1440. fruit.

1441. We're called to be faithful.

1442. And when we're faithful, God will

1443. let us see his work accomplished

  1444. before us.

1445. Because at the end of the day, the

1446. battle is his and so is the glory.

1447. And maybe the failures and the

1448. weaknesses you feel now as a

1449. Christian and in the things that

1450. God has called you to be as a

1451. Christian, maybe those failures are

1452. there because God's having to strip

1453. the pride away from your life so

1454. that you will actually give him

  1455. some glory.

1456. We could say there are a lot of

  1457. other ways.

  1458. We'll leave it there.

1459. I said in the beginning that this

1460. event was not about God's fight

  1461. against Midian.

1462. It was his fight against bell

  1463. worship among his people.

1464. And the Midianite coalition was

1465. God's instrument of judgment against

  1466. Israel's idolatry.

  1467. That's what's interesting about

  1468. this, right?

1469. God has to provide salvation for

1470. his people, but what is he saving

  1471. them from?

1472. He's saving them from himself.

1473. And in his initiative, he raises up

1474. a deliverer and empowers them to do

  1475. it.

1476. Now, it's not very hard to draw the

  1477. gospel implications there, right?

  1478. We talk about salvation.

1479. What is it that God is saving us

  1480. from?

1481. He's saving us from himself, from his

  1482. justice and his wrath.

1483. And then he takes the initiative by

1484. sending his son to die on a cross, to

1485. live the life that we were meant to

1486. live and die the death that we deserve

1487. to die in order that he might provide

  1488. salvation for us.

  1489. It's amazing.

  1490. It's amazing.

1491. He proved his steadfast love by raising

1492. up a deliverer for his people in

  1493. Judges chapter 7.

    Judges 7 chapter mention

1494. And then he demanded that they repent of

1495. their idolatry and turn back to him.

1496. And if they were to do that, they would

1497. receive the blessing of his covenant.

1498. Well, it all ultimately points us to Jesus.

1499. God has displayed his steadfast love for

1500. us in the person and work of Christ.

1501. And he demands that we repent of our

1502. idolatry and that we turn to him through

1503. faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

1504. And anyone who does that will receive the

  1505. blessings of his covenant.

  1506. Forgiveness, eternal life, reconciliation

  1507. with your creator.

1508. And why wouldn't you want that?

1509. The Savior's already been provided.

1510. God says, believe and turn and the

  1511. blessings will be yours.

1512. This story helps us understand that.

1513. If not for any other reason, by just

1514. pointing us forward to it.

  1515. Let's pray.

1516. As I pray here and as your heads are bowed

  1517. where you are.

1518. Acknowledge that at this point in our

  1519. service, Sunday by Sunday, I don't do a

1520. great job of calling us to respond.

1521. But a response to the word of God is

1522. necessary anytime we come to it.

1523. We don't respond to God if he has spoken.

1524. We respond to God because he has spoken

  1525. in his word.

1526. And whether it be through confession of sin or the

1527. consecration of your life in a renewed sense of faith and

1528. commitment of serving the Lord faithfully or maybe it's praise or

  1529. whatever it may be.

1530. Faithfulness in this moment for each one of us is to properly

  1531. respond to God's word.

1532. So as I pray, I want to encourage you not to waste the moment that

1533. there in your seat respond to the Lord and to his word, to his

  1534. gospel, to his truth.

  1535. Let's pray together.

  1536. Let's pray together.
