  1. All right, Judges chapter 16, and we're going to read just a few verses here at the beginning,

    Judges 16 chapter mention

  2. and then we'll work our way through the whole story, probably doing less reading today and

  3. more summarizing, just as you know, and I'll do my best to give the appropriate references as we go.

  4. Okay, Judges chapter 16, let's begin reading at verse 23.

    Judges 16 chapter mention

  5. Now, the lords of the Philistines gathered to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon, their God, and to rejoice.

  6. And they said, our God has given Samson, our enemy, into our hand.

  7. And when the people saw him, they praised their God.

  8. For they said, our God has given our enemy into our hand, the ravager of our country, who has killed many of us.

  9. This is the gospel of Dagon, the gospel of the Philistines.

  10. And when their hearts were merry, they said, call Samson, that he may entertain us.

  11. So they called Samson out of the prison, and he entertained them.

  12. They made him stand between the pillars, and Samson said to the young man who held him by the hand,

  13. let me fill the pillars on which the house rests, that I may lean against them.

  14. Now, the house was full of men and women.

  15. All the lords of the Philistines were there, and on the roof, there were about 3,000 men and women

  16. who looked on while Samson entertained.

  17. Have you ever hit a low point in your life?

  18. Like a legitimately low point in your life, and stop to ask yourself, how did it all come to this?

  19. What went wrong for my life to be in such a mess now?

  20. It wasn't always this way.

  21. There were good days before.

  22. There were passionate days before.

  23. There was joy before.

  24. But at that particular moment, all of that is gone.

  25. You've hit rock bottom, and you're just trying to figure out how did it all come to this?

  26. How did we get here?

  27. How did we get here with Samson?

  28. Samson, we left him at the end of chapter 13 last week as a young man, chosen, blessed, empowered by God.

  29. But we pick up the story here in chapter 16.

  30. 20 years have passed.

  31. Samson is captured, and he's now the object of entertainment for the enemy.

  32. And even worse, it's apparent that whatever Samson has done to get to this point has given the Philistines a reason to worship and glorify Dagon.

  33. He is the cause for their worship.

  34. The people of God, they're supposed to declare and display the glory of Yahweh, the one true God.

  35. Samson has given them a reason further to reject the Lord and to actually make a mockery of Him.

  36. Everything about this scene that we just read, it shows Samson as a miserable failure because that's exactly what Samson was.

  37. His life was supposed to be devoted to the Lord so that all would know that Yahweh is God, but he failed miserably,

  38. living in such a way as to bring shame to the name of the Lord instead.

  39. And once again, it becomes clear, as we've seen so many times in the book of Judges,

  40. that this narrative really isn't ultimately about Samson fighting against the Philistines.

  41. This is about Yahweh's war against false worship, not only among his people, but in the world itself.

  42. Well, how did it come to this for Samson?

  43. What went wrong for him to be in this position?

  44. And is there actually any hope that the situation can change and to be improved?

  45. Whether we're asking those questions of Samson or maybe we're even asking those questions this morning of our own lives,

  46. there are answers to be found in this particular story and in these three chapters.

  47. So what I want to do is work our way kind of quickly through the story itself to see what went wrong

  48. and then to see if any of it can actually be redeemed.

  49. And so, as I said, it's three chapters that we're going to go through.

  50. I'm probably not going to do as much reading as normal.

  51. We'll do some summarizing, but I'll note those things as we go, okay?

  52. The big thing that this boils down to, we're asking the question, what went wrong for Samson?

  53. Is Samson essentially, at the heart of it all, resisted the call of God on his life?

  54. And that's what I want you to see in these chapters, resisting God's call.

  55. Now, one major thing that comes very clear as we read through the narrative is this.

  56. Samson is the nation of Israel epitomized in a single individual.

  57. Samson is the nation of Israel epitomized in a single individual.

  58. Like the nation itself, he was chosen by God from conception.

  59. He was empowered by God.

  60. He was set apart from everyone else to be a man devoted to the Lord.

  61. God gave the nation of Israel his law.

  62. He gave Samson the Nazarite vow.

  63. Both things were to separate them, cause them to stand out as uniquely devoted to the true God.

  64. And Samson's vow was not for a limited amount of time.

  65. His life from conception to death was to be a life that exemplified the glory of God and the zeal of the Lord.

  66. But while he enjoyed the benefits and the blessings of being God's man,

  67. Samson mostly just wanted to do what was right in his own eyes.

  68. That's the very language of the passage.

  69. If you set your eyes on chapter 14 and verse 7,

  70. then he went down and talked with the woman for she was right in Samson's eyes.

  71. Over and over through the story, Samson sees what he wants and he goes after what he wants,

  72. no matter what it costs him.

  73. He just wants to do what's right in his own eyes.

  74. Fact is that living devoted to God as a sinner in a fallen world can be quite a burden.

  75. And like Israel, Samson seemed to continually resist, maybe even resent the call of God on his life.

  76. So whenever what he wanted went against what God said,

  77. Samson, along with the nation of Israel, did what was right in their own eyes.

  78. Let's just see it in the narrative.

  79. First, though God said not to marry the people of the land,

  80. Samson demanded that his parents allow him to marry a nameless Philistine woman.

  81. When enjoying a bit of honey meant touching a dead animal and breaking his Nazarite vow,

  82. Samson took the honey anyways.

  83. He then again despised his Nazarite vow

  84. when he threw his wedding feast by the vineyards of Timnah,

  85. where he and his Philistine friends indulged in drunkenness as, quote,

  86. the young men used to do.

  87. And all of that's just the first 10 verses.

  88. Samson was supposed to be the one to deliver Israel from Philistine control.

  89. But chapter 14 suggests that he much preferred to live among the Philistines

  90. and to behave like the Philistines instead.

  91. He was an Israelite who desperately wanted to be a Philistine.

  92. And like many of us,

  93. Samson wanted to be part of the world

  94. that God had called him to separate from.

  95. But it didn't take very long for him to discover

  96. that the world wasn't nearly as interested in him

  97. as he was in it.

  98. So after this bizarre drinking game

  99. that involved the riddle of the lion that he had killed,

  100. Samson was betrayed by his friends,

  101. betrayed by his new wife,

  102. betrayed by his father-in-law,

  103. and so he retaliated.

  104. He went and he killed 30 men

  105. and then he tied up a bunch of foxes

  106. and lit their tails on fire

  107. in order that he could destroy

  108. all of the Philistines' crops.

  109. Now that, in Samson's mind at that point,

  110. is not zeal for the Lord.

  111. It's zeal for his own vengeance.

  112. They had taken away his future

  113. by taking his new wife

  114. and given it to his best friend.

  115. So Samson retaliates

  116. by robbing them of their future,

  117. by destroying all of their supply of food.

  118. You can read all about it

  119. in 1411 through 158.

  120. But here's the truth about Samson.

  121. Just like Israel,

  122. Samson was on the downward spiral

  123. of apostasy,

  124. moving closer and closer and closer

  125. to fully abandoning

  126. all devotion to the Lord.

  127. But what we find in the midst of that

  128. is that God still

  129. was abundantly merciful

  130. and patient

  131. toward his carnal servant.

  132. Even using Samson's sin

  133. as an opportunity

  134. to fight against the Philistines.

  135. Samson doesn't care about God's zeal

  136. in killing those 30 men

  137. at Ashkelon.

  138. He doesn't care about

  139. the zeal of the Lord

  140. in destroying the crops

  141. with the foxes.

  142. Yet God uses even his sin

  143. to fight against those people.

  144. Samson's over here

  145. doing what's right

  146. in his own eyes

  147. and God's over here

  148. even using what's right

  149. in Samson's eyes

  150. to accomplish his work,

  151. to accomplish his will

  152. in fighting against the Philistines.

  153. But after his own people

  154. even turned against him,

  155. the men of Judah,

  156. they turned him over

  157. to the Philistines

  158. to be executed,

  159. God still empowered him

  160. to kill a thousand men.

  161. An amazing feat.

  162. Probably his greatest feat

  163. until the end of his life.

  164. And you know,

  165. God even used him

  166. as he was breaking

  167. the Nazarite vow.

  168. He killed them all

  169. with the jawbone,

  170. the fresh jawbone,

  171. the text says,

  172. of a donkey,

  173. another carcass,

  174. another thing Samson

  175. wasn't supposed to touch

  176. to begin with.

  177. And that's what he grabs

  178. as his instrument of war.

  179. And God doesn't say,

  180. never mind.

  181. God uses him

  182. even though he's a sinner,

  183. even though

  184. in the act of using him,

  185. he's sinning against the Lord.

  186. But there is a bright spot

  187. here at the end

  188. of chapter 15.

  189. Look with me

  190. at chapter 15,

  191. verse 18.

  192. This is after he's

  193. just defeated those men

  194. and he's on the brink

  195. of death,

  196. physical death.

  197. He was very thirsty

  198. and he called upon

  199. the Lord,

  200. Yahweh,

  201. and said,

  202. you have granted

  203. this great salvation

  204. by the hand

  205. of your servant.

  206. And shall I now

  207. die

  208. of thirst

  209. and fall into the hands

  210. of the uncircumcised.

  211. And look what God did.

  212. This is amazing,

  213. isn't it?

  214. Samson isn't repenting here.

  215. Just like Israel

  216. never repented.

  217. Samson's crying out

  218. for help.

  219. And God helps.

  220. God split open

  221. the hollow place

  222. that is at Leahy

  223. and water came out

  224. from it.

  225. And when he drank,

  226. his spirit returned

  227. and he revived.

  228. Therefore,

  229. the name of it

  230. was called

  231. En-Hakor,

  232. which means

  233. spring of him

  234. who called.

  235. It is at Leahy

  236. to this day.

  237. And he judged Israel

  238. in the days

  239. of the Philistines

  240. 20 years.

  241. So Samson's

  242. on the brink of death

  243. and as Israel

  244. had always done

  245. when facing ruin,

  246. he cried out

  247. to God for help.

  248. And the God of grace

  249. heard his cry.

  250. It's amazing.

  251. Out of love

  252. for his chosen one,

  253. the Lord

  254. supernaturally

  255. sustained him.

  256. Which was a crucial

  257. experience for Samson

  258. that will later

  259. influence his actions

  260. at the end of his life.

  261. We'll come back to that.

  262. Here's what God

  263. was teaching him.

  264. He was teaching Samson

  265. in that moment

  266. that if he cried out

  267. in faith,

  268. the Lord would save him.

  269. That no matter

  270. how far he'd run

  271. from God's call,

  272. the Lord would hear

  273. the prayer of faith

  274. and he would answer him

  275. and he would help him

  276. and he would restore him.

  277. Well, chapter 16

  278. is where Samson

  279. hits rock bottom.

  280. It begins

  281. in the first three verses

  282. by him taking a prostitute

  283. in Gaza,

  284. which was a major

  285. Philistine city.

  286. And the people,

  287. of course,

  288. when he gets to Gaza

  289. in the night

  290. to sleep with this prostitute,

  291. they recognize him.

  292. They set a trap

  293. to kill the man

  294. who had been such a pain

  295. in their necks.

  296. But again,

  297. even though he was there

  298. because of his own sin,

  299. God delivers him.

  300. He again strengthens him

  301. to remove the gates

  302. of the city

  303. and escape

  304. back to Israelite territory.

  305. But still,

  306. Samson's greatest sin

  307. comes next.

  308. Look at verse 4

  309. in chapter 16.

  310. After this,

  311. he loved a woman

  312. in the valley of Sorek

  313. whose name was Delilah.

  314. And the lords

  315. of the Philistines

  316. came up to her

  317. and said to her,

  318. Seduce him

  319. and see where

  320. his great strength lies

  321. and by what means

  322. we may overpower him

  323. that we may bind him

  324. to humble him.

  325. And we will each give you

  326. 1,100 pieces of silver.

  327. That is an enormous

  328. amount of money.

  329. We've seen pieces

  330. of silver offered

  331. for wickedness

  332. once before

  333. in the book of Judges.

  334. It was with Abimelech.

  335. He was given money

  336. in order that he could

  337. hire worthless fellows

  338. to go and fight

  339. against all of Gideon's sons.

  340. He received 70 pieces

  341. of silver.

  342. There were five lords

  343. of the Philistines historically.

  344. Five lords

  345. of the Philistines

  346. telling this one woman,

  347. each of us will give you

  348. 1,100 pieces of silver

  349. for you to do

  350. this thing for us.

  351. This is an enormous

  352. amount of money.

  353. Verse 6,

  354. So Delilah said to Samson,

  355. Please tell me

  356. where your great strength lies

  357. and how you might be bound

  358. that one could subdue you.

  359. Samson said to her,

  360. If they bind me

  361. with seven fresh bow strings

  362. that have not been dried,

  363. then I shall become weak

  364. and be like any other man.

  365. Then the lords

  366. of the Philistines

  367. brought up to her

  368. seven fresh bow strings

  369. that had not been dried

  370. and she bound him with them.

  371. Now she had men lying

  372. in ambush

  373. in an inner chamber.

  374. And she said to him,

  375. The Philistines

  376. are upon you, Samson.

  377. But he snapped

  378. the bow strings

  379. as a thread of flax snaps

  380. when it touches the fire.

  381. So the secret of his strength

  382. was not known.

  383. Now surely you would expect

  384. that any reasonable man

  385. would say,

  386. I don't think this woman

  387. has my best interest

  388. at heart.

  389. But notice what he does.

  390. Delilah said to Samson,

  391. Behold, you have mocked me

  392. and told me lies.

  393. Please tell me

  394. how you might be bound.

  395. And he said to her,

  396. If they bind me

  397. with new ropes

  398. that have not been used,

  399. then I shall become weak

  400. and be like any other man.

  401. So Delilah took new ropes

  402. and bound him with them

  403. and said to him,

  404. The Philistines

  405. are upon you, Samson.

  406. And the men lying in ambush

  407. were in an inner chamber,

  408. but he snapped the ropes

  409. off his arms

  410. like a thread.

  411. Then Delilah said to Samson,

  412. Until now,

  413. you have mocked me

  414. and told me lies.

  415. Tell me how you might be bound.

  416. And he said to her,

  417. If you weave the seven locks

  418. of my head

  419. with the web

  420. and fasten it tight

  421. with the pen,

  422. then I shall become weak

  423. and be like any other man.

  424. So while he slept,

  425. Delilah took the seven locks

  426. of his head

  427. and wove them

  428. into a web.

  429. Can we just appreciate

  430. his ability to sleep

  431. at this moment?

  432. And she made them tight

  433. with the pen

  434. and said to him,

  435. The Philistines

  436. are upon you, Samson.

  437. But he awoke from his sleep

  438. and pulled away the pen,

  439. the loom, and the web.

  440. And she said to him,

  441. How can you say I love you

  442. when your heart

  443. is not with me?

  444. That's ironic, isn't it?

  445. You have mocked me

  446. these three times

  447. and you have not told me

  448. where your great strength lies.

  449. And when she pressed him hard

  450. with her words

  451. day after day

  452. and urged him,

  453. his soul was vexed to death.

  454. And he told her

  455. all his heart.

  456. And he said to her,

  457. A razor has never come

  458. upon my head,

  459. for I have been a Nazarite

  460. to God

  461. from my mother's womb.

  462. If my head is shaved,

  463. then my strength

  464. will leave me

  465. and I shall become weak

  466. and be like any other man.

  467. For the first time

  468. in the whole narrative,

  469. we meet a woman

  470. with a name,

  471. Delilah.

  472. She was in league

  473. with the Philistine rulers,

  474. but Samson gave her

  475. his heart.

  476. But Delilah doesn't love Samson.

  477. She loves money

  478. far more than she loves Samson.

  479. And the Philistines,

  480. as I said before,

  481. were prepared to make her

  482. a very rich woman

  483. in order for her

  484. to expose the secret

  485. of his strength

  486. so that they may get

  487. some kind of advantage

  488. over the ravager

  489. of their people.

  490. And after a few blatant

  491. yet failed attempts,

  492. Samson eventually tells her

  493. all of his heart.

  494. The truth is that

  495. his strength

  496. didn't come from his hair.

  497. There's no point

  498. in the text

  499. anywhere

  500. in the whole text

  501. until now

  502. that connects

  503. Samson's strength

  504. to his hair.

  505. His hair didn't give him strength.

  506. God gave him strength.

  507. But Samson makes

  508. a correct theological judgment

  509. here with Delilah.

  510. His hair was the only sign

  511. of devotion to God

  512. that he had not

  513. already violated.

  514. He's violated

  515. everything else.

  516. He's tried to marry

  517. a woman that's not Israelite.

  518. He has,

  519. on multiple occasions,

  520. touched dead bodies,

  521. the carcasses of animals.

  522. Implicit in the text

  523. is his own drunkenness

  524. at his wedding feast.

  525. There's nothing left

  526. for him to do

  527. in violating his devotion

  528. to God

  529. except bring a razor

  530. to his head.

  531. And he correctly

  532. makes that judgment.

  533. He knew that

  534. cutting his hair

  535. would be a final step

  536. toward apostasy.

  537. And though he didn't

  538. do it himself,

  539. and I think that's significant,

  540. he chose to drink,

  541. he chose to touch

  542. the lion

  543. and the jawbone

  544. of the donkey,

  545. he chose to go

  546. after the other woman,

  547. he does not choose

  548. to cut his own hair.

  549. Though he does not

  550. do it himself,

  551. I think he knew full well

  552. that Delilah was going

  553. to do it.

  554. Samson's not an idiot.

  555. After three times

  556. of him telling her one thing

  557. and her immediately

  558. doing that thing,

  559. that's when he tells her

  560. the truth?

  561. Isn't it as if he

  562. kind of wants

  563. this strength to be gone

  564. at this point?

  565. Seems that way,

  566. doesn't it?

  567. Why would he want her

  568. to do this?

  569. I think the answer

  570. is he just,

  571. as he said,

  572. simply wanted to be

  573. like any other man.

  574. But God had not called him

  575. to be like any other man.

  576. God had not called him

  577. to live like any other man.

  578. But all he wanted

  579. was to just be

  580. like everybody else.

  581. And his sin

  582. had deceived him such

  583. that he believed

  584. that if he could

  585. just be ridden

  586. of the burden

  587. of God's call

  588. on his life,

  589. that he would then

  590. be able to find

  591. true satisfaction

  592. and true fulfillment

  593. in the way

  594. that he wanted to live

  595. and at the same time

  596. he'd be able to have

  597. the love of his life.

  598. Which was a foolish judgment.

  599. Because the pleasures

  600. of sin never live up

  601. to what they promise.

  602. And the consequences

  603. are always worse

  604. than what we ever

  605. imagined them to be.

  606. Look at verse 18.

  607. When Delilah saw

  608. that he had told her

  609. all his heart,

  610. she sent and called

  611. the lords of the Philistines

  612. saying,

  613. Come up again

  614. for he has told me

  615. all his heart.

  616. Make sure to bring

  617. the silver.

  618. Then the lords

  619. of the Philistines

  620. came up to her

  621. and brought the money

  622. in their hands

  623. and she made him

  624. sleep on her knees

  625. and she called

  626. a man

  627. and had him shave

  628. off the seven locks

  629. of his head.

  630. Then she began

  631. to torment him

  632. and his strength

  633. left him.

  634. And she said,

  635. the Philistines

  636. are upon you,

  637. Samson.

  638. And he awoke

  639. from his sleep

  640. and said,

  641. I will go out

  642. as other times

  643. and shake myself free.

  644. But he did not know

  645. that the Lord

  646. had left him.

  647. And the Philistines

  648. seized him,

  649. gouged out his eyes,

  650. brought him down

  651. to Gaza,

  652. bound him

  653. with bronze shackles

  654. and he ground

  655. at the mill

  656. in the prison.

  657. When Samson awoke

  658. from his sleep

  659. on that night,

  660. the situation

  661. was worse

  662. than he probably

  663. ever thought

  664. it would be.

  665. sin always promises

  666. more than it

  667. can actually deliver.

  668. It never actually

  669. comes through.

  670. The Lord

  671. had left him.

  672. He didn't even know it.

  673. He awakens

  674. knowing

  675. that he's just

  676. told her all his heart.

  677. Yet he still expects

  678. that the strength

  679. will be there.

  680. Another sign

  681. that it really wasn't

  682. about the hair itself.

  683. Even Samson

  684. thinks he'll still

  685. have the strength

  686. but then

  687. there's no strength.

  688. There's no strength

  689. to fight.

  690. Not because

  691. his hair was gone

  692. but because

  693. the consequences

  694. of his sin

  695. had caught up to him.

  696. So the Philistines

  697. captured him,

  698. they took his eyes

  699. and they imprisoned him

  700. in Gaza

  701. until it was time

  702. to celebrate

  703. what they thought

  704. was a victory

  705. for Dagon.

  706. In reality,

  707. Samson

  708. wasn't the victim

  709. of Dagon's judgment

  710. but Yahweh's

  711. judgment.

  712. But there's still

  713. a glimmer of hope.

  714. Look at verse 22.

  715. But the hair

  716. of his head

  717. began to grow

  718. again

  719. after it had been

  720. shaved.

  721. True to the book

  722. of Judges,

  723. though Samson

  724. sinned against the Lord

  725. again and again

  726. and again

  727. and again.

  728. God's limitless mercy

  729. shines through here.

  730. An encouragement

  731. to those of us

  732. who live more

  733. like Samson

  734. than we do

  735. like Jesus.

  736. Barry Webb said,

  737. Samson may

  738. want to be

  739. as other men

  740. but God

  741. won't let him

  742. be so.

  743. There in the

  744. dank,

  745. miserable,

  746. degrading prison,

  747. God reclaims

  748. his wayward

  749. child.

  750. But we're left

  751. wondering

  752. how much more

  753. glorious of a

  754. servant of God

  755. he might have been

  756. if only he had

  757. embraced his calling

  758. rather than

  759. resisting it.

  760. I think Samson

  761. would have

  762. quite loved

  763. to sing the song

  764. that we often

  765. sing here.

  766. When I fear

  767. my faith will fail,

  768. Christ will hold

  769. me fast.

  770. When the tempter

  771. would prevail,

  772. he will hold

  773. me fast.

  774. I could never

  775. keep my hold

  776. through life's

  777. fearful path

  778. for my love

  779. is often cold.

  780. He must hold

  781. me fast.

  782. If I will be held,

  783. it must be him

  784. that does it.

  785. The regrowth

  786. of Samson's hair

  787. is a sign

  788. of God's

  789. relentless

  790. pursuit

  791. of his people.

  792. Although Samson

  793. continually

  794. failed the Lord,

  795. the Lord

  796. would not

  797. abandon him.

  798. And what a glorious

  799. thought that is

  800. for those

  801. who belong

  802. to God

  803. cannot

  804. out sin

  805. his grace.

  806. It can't

  807. be done.

  808. Here is Samson

  809. doing everything

  810. he could possibly

  811. do to get away

  812. from the call

  813. of God

  814. in a similar way

  815. to Jonah

  816. and yet God's

  817. grace is still

  818. there.

  819. He will not

  820. let him go.

  821. So his hair

  822. begins to grow

  823. again.

  824. He'll not

  825. let my soul

  826. be lost.

  827. His promises

  828. shall last.

  829. Bought by him

  830. at such a cost,

  831. he will hold

  832. me fast.

  833. That's resisting

  834. the call.

  835. Now let's look

  836. at experiencing

  837. God's grace.

  838. Experiencing

  839. God's grace.

  840. You're in chapter

  841. 16.

  842. Now jump down

  843. to verse 28.

  844. Now we're

  845. back in Gaza.

  846. Samson has

  847. been brought

  848. out for the

  849. people to mock

  850. him and to

  851. mock the Lord.

  852. Verse 28,

  853. then Samson

  854. called to the

  855. Lord.

  856. Remember he's

  857. done that once

  858. before?

  859. You think he

  860. learned something

  861. there?

  862. Yeah, I think

  863. he did.

  864. Because he's

  865. doing it again

  866. here.

  867. He calls to

  868. the Lord,

  869. oh Lord God,

  870. please remember

  871. me and please

  872. strengthen me

  873. only this once,

  874. oh God,

  875. that I may be

  876. avenged on the

  877. Philistines for

  878. my two eyes.

  879. Samson grasped

  880. the two middle

  881. pillars on which

  882. the house rested

  883. and he leaned

  884. his weight against

  885. them, his right

  886. hand on one,

  887. his left hand on

  888. the other.

  889. And Samson said,

  890. let me die with

  891. the Philistines.

  892. Then he bowed

  893. with all his

  894. strength and the

  895. house fell upon

  896. the Lord's and

  897. upon all the

  898. people who were

  899. in it.

  900. So the dead

  901. whom he killed

  902. at his death

  903. were more than

  904. those whom he

  905. had killed during

  906. his life.

  907. Then his

  908. brothers and all

  909. his family came

  910. down and took

  911. him and brought

  912. him up and

  913. buried him between

  914. Zorah and

  915. Eshtail in the

  916. tomb of Manoah,

  917. his father.

  918. He had judged

  919. Israel 20 years.

  920. For all Samson

  921. did wrong,

  922. he understood

  923. and he

  924. acknowledged that

  925. his strength

  926. did not come

  927. from within

  928. him.

  929. It came from

  930. God.

  931. And you have

  932. to dig through

  933. a lot of sin

  934. to get to it,

  935. but underneath

  936. all the foolishness

  937. of Samson's

  938. life was a

  939. sinner who

  940. believed God.

  941. We can even

  942. still discern a

  943. vengeful motive

  944. in his prayer,

  945. but it was

  946. indeed a prayer

  947. of faith for

  948. God to save

  949. his people by

  950. defeating the

  951. Philistines,

  952. which is exactly

  953. why the author

  954. of Hebrews

  955. named Samson

  956. as a man of

  957. faith whose

  958. life encourages

  959. us to look to

  960. Jesus who is

  961. the founder and

  962. perfecter of our

  963. faith.

  964. That's Hebrews

  965. 11 and Hebrews

  966. 12.

  967. Samson's there.

  968. Of all the

  969. people in the

  970. book of Judges

  971. that we were to

  972. say there's no

  973. way they're saved.

  974. There's no way

  975. they made it.

  976. Samson's probably

  977. at the top of

  978. the list,

  979. and yet he

  980. made it.

  981. Why?

  982. Not because he

  983. had his life

  984. together, but

  985. because he was a

  986. man of faith.

  987. He believed

  988. God.

  989. He believed

  990. God.

  991. There is irony

  992. in his final cry

  993. though, isn't

  994. there?

  995. Please remember

  996. me, Samson

  997. prayed.

  998. He asked for

  999. God to do for

  1000. him what he

  1001. and all of

  1002. Israel had

  1003. repeatedly failed

  1004. to do.

  1005. Remember the

  1006. Lord their

  1007. God.

  1008. Yet no amount

  1009. of sin will

  1010. turn God's

  1011. ear away from

  1012. the one who

  1013. cries to him

  1014. in faith.

  1015. Though we are

  1016. unfaithful to

  1017. him, he is

  1018. ever faithful

  1019. to those who

  1020. call upon

  1021. him.

  1022. So Jesus

  1023. says, come to

  1024. me then, all

  1025. who labor

  1026. and are

  1027. heavy laden

  1028. and I

  1029. will give

  1030. you rest.

  1031. And then he

  1032. says, whoever

  1033. does come to

  1034. me, I will

  1035. never cast

  1036. out.

  1037. Which is why

  1038. Paul is so

  1039. confident to

  1040. say, everyone,

  1041. whoever calls

  1042. upon the name

  1043. of the Lord

  1044. will be

  1045. saved.

  1046. Samson shows

  1047. us that

  1048. salvation is

  1049. not earned

  1050. by what we

  1051. do.

  1052. Even the

  1053. good that

  1054. Samson did

  1055. was tainted

  1056. by his sin.

  1057. All of it

  1058. was.

  1059. Even in his

  1060. dying moment,

  1061. he's crying out

  1062. for vengeance

  1063. for himself.

  1064. It's all

  1065. touched by his

  1066. own depravity.

  1067. And yet

  1068. despite that,

  1069. God is

  1070. gracious.

  1071. Why?

  1072. Why is God

  1073. so gracious?

  1074. Because salvation

  1075. is received by

  1076. faith in the

  1077. gracious and

  1078. merciful God

  1079. whose steadfast

  1080. love endures

  1081. forever.

  1082. And for us,

  1083. it is through

  1084. faith in the

  1085. person and the

  1086. work of our

  1087. Lord and Savior,

  1088. Jesus Christ,

  1089. whom the writer

  1090. of Hebrews says,

  1091. for the joy that

  1092. was before him

  1093. endured the

  1094. cross,

  1095. despising the

  1096. shame,

  1097. and is seated

  1098. at the right

  1099. hand of the

  1100. throne of God.

  1101. God heard

  1102. Samson's prayer

  1103. and answered

  1104. him accordingly.

  1105. knowing it

  1106. would take

  1107. his death

  1108. to deliver

  1109. his own

  1110. people,

  1111. God

  1112. strengthens

  1113. Samson one

  1114. final time,

  1115. which just

  1116. remembers,

  1117. which just

  1118. reminds us

  1119. that we can

  1120. escape the

  1121. ultimate penalty

  1122. for our sin,

  1123. but that

  1124. doesn't mean

  1125. that we'll

  1126. escape the

  1127. immediate

  1128. consequences of

  1129. our sin.

  1130. Samson.

  1131. Don't mistake

  1132. that.

  1133. Samson pulled

  1134. down the two

  1135. pillars,

  1136. resulting in the

  1137. destruction of

  1138. all the Philistine

  1139. governing officials,

  1140. which was also a

  1141. clear statement

  1142. of Yahweh's power

  1143. over Dagon.

  1144. And tragically,

  1145. Samson dies

  1146. with them.

  1147. he was crushed

  1148. so that his

  1149. people might

  1150. live.

  1151. And there's

  1152. beauty to the

  1153. last verse there,

  1154. isn't there?

  1155. Samson might have

  1156. died with the

  1157. Philistines,

  1158. but he was

  1159. buried with his

  1160. family.

  1161. Now think about

  1162. that.

  1163. Israelites

  1164. buried their

  1165. dead rather

  1166. than burned

  1167. them.

  1168. They buried

  1169. them as a

  1170. sign of

  1171. preparation for

  1172. what they

  1173. believed would

  1174. be a future

  1175. resurrection.

  1176. God used

  1177. Samson to

  1178. deliver Israel

  1179. for 20

  1180. years,

  1181. but in the

  1182. end,

  1183. Samson's

  1184. body was

  1185. laid to

  1186. rest in

  1187. anticipation

  1188. of a

  1189. greater Savior

  1190. who would

  1191. bring him

  1192. true and

  1193. eternal

  1194. salvation.

  1195. It's all

  1196. right there.

  1197. Yeah,

  1198. God used

  1199. him to

  1200. help,

  1201. but even

  1202. Samson needed

  1203. a greater

  1204. Savior.

  1205. Even

  1206. Samson

  1207. died.

  1208. Even

  1209. Samson

  1210. needed a

  1211. resurrection.

  1212. And that

  1213. Savior is

  1214. Jesus,

  1215. who Paul

  1216. wrote to

  1217. the

  1218. Corinthians

  1219. in 1

  1220. Corinthians

  1221. 15,

  1222. has been

  1223. raised from

  1224. the dead,

  1225. the first

  1226. fruits of

  1227. those who

  1228. are fallen

  1229. asleep.

  1230. For as in

  1231. Adam all

  1232. die,

  1233. so also in

  1234. Christ shall

  1235. all be made

  1236. alive,

  1237. but each in

  1238. his own

  1239. order.

  1240. Christ the

  1241. first fruits,

  1242. then at

  1243. his coming,

  1244. those who

  1245. belong to

  1246. Christ.

  1247. It's an

  1248. experience of

  1249. grace, a

  1250. grace that I

  1251. believe Samson

  1252. enjoys today

  1253. with Jesus

  1254. in heaven.

  1255. How do we

  1256. see Jesus

  1257. through the

  1258. Samson cycle?

  1259. There's a few

  1260. elements of

  1261. Samson's story

  1262. that do

  1263. foreshadow the

  1264. gospel of

  1265. Jesus, and

  1266. of course we're

  1267. always looking for

  1268. that in the

  1269. Bible.

  1270. All of the

  1271. Bible is about

  1272. Jesus.

  1273. It doesn't

  1274. matter if we're

  1275. in the Old

  1276. Testament or

  1277. New.

  1278. We get to

  1279. Jesus in the

  1280. scriptures because

  1281. the scriptures are

  1282. ultimately about

  1283. Jesus.

  1284. And the

  1285. Samson story,

  1286. really to be

  1287. honest, is not

  1288. that difficult to

  1289. find the

  1290. connections.

  1291. There's been

  1292. other stories in

  1293. the book of

  1294. Judges that

  1295. have been much

  1296. more difficult

  1297. to see it.

  1298. It's pretty

  1299. clear here.

  1300. There's a few

  1301. of them.

  1302. Both of their

  1303. births were

  1304. miracles, showing

  1305. God's purpose and

  1306. using them in

  1307. particular to

  1308. bring a

  1309. salvation to

  1310. his people.

  1311. Like Samson,

  1312. Jesus was

  1313. arrested by his

  1314. own people and

  1315. turned over to

  1316. the enemy for

  1317. execution.

  1318. But of course,

  1319. at the end of

  1320. the day, only

  1321. Jesus is

  1322. Jesus.

  1323. Samson's only

  1324. pointing us

  1325. forward to

  1326. him.

  1327. Samson was a

  1328. sinner like the

  1329. rest of us.

  1330. Jesus is the

  1331. eternal God who

  1332. Peter said

  1333. committed no

  1334. sin, neither

  1335. was deceit found

  1336. in his mouth.

  1337. But it's

  1338. Samson's death

  1339. that most

  1340. points us to

  1341. Jesus.

  1342. Both brought

  1343. salvation through

  1344. self-sacrificing

  1345. deaths.

  1346. But there is an

  1347. important distinction

  1348. that needs to be

  1349. made.

  1350. Samson got

  1351. himself into

  1352. that position

  1353. because he was

  1354. unfaithful to

  1355. God.

  1356. You know why

  1357. Samson was in

  1358. Gaza tied to two

  1359. pillars being

  1360. mocked without

  1361. his eyes?

  1362. Because Samson

  1363. blew it.

  1364. That was the

  1365. result of his

  1366. own sin.

  1367. He was crushed

  1368. for his sin.

  1369. Jesus was

  1370. crushed for

  1371. our sin.

  1372. That's the

  1373. distinction that

  1374. must be made.

  1375. Hear the words

  1376. of the prophet

  1377. from Isaiah 53.

  1378. Surely he has

  1379. borne our griefs

  1380. and carried our

  1381. sorrows.

  1382. Yet we esteemed

  1383. him stricken,

  1384. smitten by God

  1385. and afflicted.

  1386. But he was

  1387. pierced for our

  1388. transgressions.

  1389. He was crushed

  1390. for our

  1391. iniquities.

  1392. Upon him was

  1393. the chastisement

  1394. that brought us

  1395. peace.

  1396. And with his

  1397. wounds we are

  1398. healed.

  1399. All we like

  1400. sheep have gone

  1401. astray.

  1402. We have turned

  1403. everyone to his

  1404. own way.

  1405. Just like

  1406. Samson.

  1407. And the Lord

  1408. has laid on

  1409. him the

  1410. iniquity of

  1411. all of us.

  1412. He was

  1413. oppressed and

  1414. he was

  1415. afflicted yet

  1416. he opened

  1417. not his

  1418. mouth.

  1419. Like a

  1420. lamb that

  1421. is led to

  1422. the slaughter.

  1423. Like a

  1424. sheep that

  1425. before its

  1426. shearers is

  1427. silent he

  1428. opened not

  1429. his mouth.

  1430. By oppression

  1431. and judgment

  1432. he was taken

  1433. away.

  1434. And as for

  1435. his generation

  1436. who considered

  1437. that he was

  1438. cut off out

  1439. of the land

  1440. of the living

  1441. stricken for

  1442. the transgression

  1443. of my people.

  1444. And they

  1445. made his

  1446. grave with

  1447. the wicked.

  1448. With a rich

  1449. man in his

  1450. death.

  1451. Although he

  1452. had done no

  1453. violence and

  1454. there was no

  1455. deceit in his

  1456. mouth.

  1457. Yet it was

  1458. the will of

  1459. Yahweh to

  1460. crush him.

  1461. He has put

  1462. him to

  1463. grief.

  1464. And when his

  1465. soul makes an

  1466. offering for

  1467. guilt he shall

  1468. see his

  1469. offspring.

  1470. He shall

  1471. prolong his

  1472. days.

  1473. This is

  1474. resurrection.

  1475. The will of

  1476. the Lord shall

  1477. prosper in his

  1478. hand.

  1479. Out of the

  1480. anguish of

  1481. his soul he

  1482. shall see and

  1483. be satisfied.

  1484. By his

  1485. knowledge shall

  1486. the righteous

  1487. one my

  1488. servant make

  1489. many to be

  1490. accounted

  1491. righteous.

  1492. And he

  1493. shall bear

  1494. their iniquities.

  1495. Therefore I

  1496. will divide him

  1497. a portion with

  1498. the many and

  1499. he shall divide

  1500. the spoil with

  1501. the strong because

  1502. he poured out

  1503. his soul to

  1504. death and was

  1505. numbered with

  1506. the transgressors.

  1507. Yet he bore the

  1508. sin of many and

  1509. makes intercession

  1510. for the

  1511. transgressors.

  1512. Samson was

  1513. crushed for his

  1514. own sin.

  1515. Jesus was

  1516. crushed for

  1517. our sin.

  1518. And the

  1519. resurrection bit

  1520. is perhaps the

  1521. most important

  1522. bit.

  1523. Death had no

  1524. claim on

  1525. Jesus because

  1526. Jesus never

  1527. sinned.

  1528. sin.

  1529. How could he

  1530. never sin?

  1531. Because he's

  1532. God who

  1533. cannot sin.

  1534. And his

  1535. crucifixion

  1536. absorbed the

  1537. wrath of God

  1538. that was meant

  1539. for us.

  1540. He lived the

  1541. life we were

  1542. meant to live.

  1543. He lived the

  1544. life Samson was

  1545. meant to live.

  1546. And he died the

  1547. death we

  1548. deserve to die.

  1549. And then God

  1550. raised him.

  1551. And why did

  1552. God raise him?

  1553. To show that

  1554. his sacrifice on

  1555. the cross was

  1556. sufficient to

  1557. forgive our

  1558. sins.

  1559. And then Christ

  1560. graciously,

  1561. lovingly, the

  1562. Lord of all

  1563. creation,

  1564. turns and he

  1565. invites you to

  1566. receive this life

  1567. through faith in

  1568. what he's done.

  1569. Not to earn it

  1570. by being the

  1571. anti-Samson.

  1572. To receive it in

  1573. the same way that

  1574. Samson received it.

  1575. As a sinner

  1576. with no hope.

  1577. But with faith in

  1578. the one who is

  1579. the true Savior.

  1580. Who has done what

  1581. no other Savior

  1582. could ever do.

  1583. And he invites us

  1584. to it freely.

  1585. come to me

  1586. and I will

  1587. give you

  1588. rest

  1589. and I will

  1590. never cast you

  1591. out.

  1592. Sin against me

  1593. every day of your

  1594. life.

  1595. I won't let you

  1596. go.

  1597. I won't cast you

  1598. out.

  1599. Because you're

  1600. mine.

  1601. Because the

  1602. price that I

  1603. paid on the

  1604. cross was not

  1605. just the price

  1606. for the sins

  1607. you've committed

  1608. up to the

  1609. moment of your

  1610. faith.

  1611. But even for

  1612. the sins that

  1613. you commit

  1614. after.

  1615. And what a

  1616. glorious gospel

  1617. that is.
