  1. We're in familiar territory with this psalm, aren't we?

  2. It's another lament from David concerning yet another season of distress,

  3. which seems to now be common in David's life as we work through these psalms.

  4. Every psalm seems to be another moment of suffering, another moment of trial.

  5. And if we aren't careful, that will cause us to be just a bit jaded, won't it?

  6. And we bring all of these psalms together and we see over and over suffering, affliction, distress,

  7. and it'll cause us to start to get a little pessimistic about the life that God has given us.

  8. And surely this is representative of what life is like, isn't it?

  9. David gives us a fair picture that there are peaks that we get to enjoy

  10. and there are many valleys that we have to suffer through in this life.

  11. And so once again, we find David in a particular distress.

  12. And the nature of that distress is actually, it's quite easy to discern here,

  13. even if we don't have all the details.

  14. Simply an individual named Cush spoke against David in such a way

  15. that his enemies multiplied and his life was in grave danger.

  16. It's fairly simple, at least from that perspective.

  17. Unfortunately, Cush's identity has been lost to time,

  18. but it is his heritage as a Benjaminite that helps us to understand the background of David's lament here.

  19. You'll remember that King Saul, who tried multiple times to murder David,

  20. was from the tribe of Benjamin,

  21. and the tribe had set itself often,

  22. if you read back through those historical narratives of 1 and 2 Samuel,

  23. you'll see that the tribe of Benjamin often set itself against David

  24. as a really quite foolish act of loyalty,

  25. not to God,

  26. but a loyalty to Saul.

  27. Let me just walk you through a few passages here.

  28. They're on the screen.

  29. You don't have to turn.

  30. We see in 1 Samuel 22 and verse 7,

  31. Saul calls for Benjamin's allegiance against David.

  32. Here's what he says.

  33. And Saul said to his servants who stood about him,

  34. Hear now, people of Benjamin,

  35. will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards?

  36. Will he make you all commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds?

  37. In other words, what he's saying is,

  38. is I will be better to you than David will be.

  39. Therefore, do not conspire against me.

  40. Conspire against him.

  41. Saul calls for the allegiance of his own tribe

  42. to support him in his fight against David.

  43. That's really where it begins.

  44. And then it continues.

  45. 2 Samuel 3 and verse 1.

  46. After Saul dies,

  47. Benjamin leads an opposing army in civil war.

  48. Did you realize that after Saul's death,

  49. it still took eight years for David to assume the throne in Israel?

  50. The reason is because of this civil war.

  51. And the opposing army against David was led,

  52. spearheaded by none other than the tribe of Benjamin.

  53. And we read about it in 2 Samuel 3.

  54. There was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David.

  55. But God was good, wasn't he?

  56. David grew stronger and stronger while the house of Saul became weaker and weaker.

  57. And then it continues again.

  58. 2 Samuel 16 verses 7 and 8.

    2 Samuel 16:7

  59. When Absalom ran David out of Jerusalem,

  60. Shimei, another Benjaminite,

  61. curses David.

  62. And the basis of his curse is he was claiming divine vengeance for Saul.

  63. Now there happened to be there a worthless man who's,

  64. or excuse me,

  65. and Shimei said as he cursed,

  66. Get out, get out, you men of blood, you worthless man.

  67. The Lord has avenged on you all the blood of the house of Saul,

  68. in whose place you have reigned.

  69. And the Lord has given the kingdom into the hand of your son, Absalom.

  70. 2 Samuel chapter 20.

    2 Samuel 20 chapter mention

  71. After Absalom's revolt,

  72. another Benjaminite named Sheba

  73. led another revolt against David.

  74. Here's the verse.

  75. Now there happened to be there a worthless man

  76. whose name was Sheba,

  77. the son of Bichri,

  78. a Benjaminite.

  79. And he blew the trumpet and said,

  80. We have no portion in David.

  81. We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse.

  82. Every man to his tent.

  83. So Israel.

  84. So all the men of Israel withdrew from David

  85. and followed Sheba,

  86. the son of Bichri.

  87. But the men of Judah followed their king steadfastly

  88. from Jordan to Jerusalem.

  89. So we see the pattern here, don't we?

  90. It's not so much that we need to know who Cush is.

  91. That doesn't really matter.

  92. This situation that David's in,

  93. it could have fallen in a number of different scenarios in his life.

  94. But the pattern that we see is that there was this ongoing feud

  95. between the tribe of Benjamin,

  96. those who would have identified themselves with King Saul.

  97. If we step back and we look at the big picture of the Bible,

  98. we're looking at people who would identify as the seed of the serpent

  99. that are fighting constantly against the seed of the woman

  100. represented in David,

  101. which ultimately points us to the person of Christ.

  102. So the hostility of Benjamin toward David is well established,

  103. though we cannot be sure of the exact issue at hand here.

  104. But one feature of this hostility over and over and over with Benjamin

  105. repeatedly comes to the surface.

  106. And it is this.

  107. False accusations that lead to threats against David's life.

  108. That goes all the way back to Saul.

  109. In fact, there's a passage in 1 Samuel as Saul is trying to kill David,

  110. and David meets up with his best friend, Jonathan,

  111. who happens to be Saul's son.

  112. You'll remember the exchange here.

  113. What is it that David says?

  114. He says, what have I done to your father?

  115. What sin have I committed?

  116. What have I done?

  117. I have done nothing but serve him, but he seeks my life.

  118. And the implication there, or the inference there,

  119. is that what Saul was doing was conjuring up in his own mind

  120. false accusations about David.

  121. He felt threatened by David,

  122. and therefore he spread the false accusations,

  123. and he tried to murder him.

  124. And that's exactly what we see the tribe of Benjamin doing

  125. again and again and again.

  126. They're raising false accusations against David

  127. in order that they may threaten his life

  128. and take the throne for themselves.

  129. And Psalm 7 is fundamentally a prayer for vindication,

  130. that God would expose the truth in relation to Cush's lies,

  131. and that by doing that, he would save the righteous,

  132. in this case, David,

  133. and bring justice against the wicked,

  134. in this case, Cush the Benjaminite.

  135. Okay?

  136. So that's the background here, right?

  137. That's what's happening, and that will help us.

  138. Now, before we walk through the song itself,

  139. we need to recognize that there is a key verse here.

  140. The key verse is verse 11a.

  141. Set your eyes on it.

  142. Verse 11, here's what David says.

  143. God is a righteous judge.

  144. God is a righteous judge.

  145. All of the content of this prayer

  146. flows from David's faith in this one statement,

  147. which means that if we're going to grasp

  148. the foundational understanding of this psalm,

  149. if we're going to apply this psalm the right way,

  150. then we need to understand these two foundational affirmations

  151. that David is making.

  152. Affirmation number one is that God is the ultimate judge.

  153. David is the sufferer.

  154. He has authority that is limited.

  155. He does have authority,

  156. but even he recognizes ultimately God is the judge.

  157. Affirmation number two,

  158. God is righteous in all his judgments.

  159. God is righteous in all his judgments.

  160. Okay, so follow me here.

  161. That's all in just that one statement.

  162. God is a righteous judge.

  163. God is the ultimate judge.

  164. All of us will ultimately stand before him,

  165. and when God issues his judgment,

  166. it is always right.

  167. He always does what's right.

  168. That's what Abraham says, right?

  169. And Abraham, when he's having that conversation

  170. with God related to Sodom,

  171. what is it that he says to God?

  172. He said,

  173. shall not the judge of all the earth do that which is right?

  174. He says,

  175. we know you're the righteous judge,

  176. that all of your judgments are good and right.

  177. Paul says it again in 1 Timothy,

  178. when he talks about his crown of life,

  179. that the Lord,

  180. the righteous judge,

  181. will give to him on that day.

  182. He even recognizes there is coming a day,

  183. a final judgment.

  184. God will rule over all of us,

  185. and all of his judgments will be right.

  186. Now, everything David prays in Psalm 7

  187. flows from his faith in this statement.

  188. Without this statement,

  189. none of the rest of the psalm makes any sense.

  190. It all flows from this.

  191. And these affirmations,

  192. they're repeated throughout the scriptures,

  193. and they are universally held

  194. by true believers.

  195. fundamental to the Christian faith

  196. is the fact that God,

  197. through Christ,

  198. will judge the world.

  199. And his judgment

  200. will be perfectly just.

  201. Why?

  202. Because he himself

  203. is truly righteous.

  204. righteous.

  205. And as we will see in David's song,

  206. God's righteous judgment,

  207. while it is certain,

  208. happens according to his timeline,

  209. not ours.

  210. In some cases,

  211. some injustices are judged now,

  212. while others are addressed

  213. in the final judgment.

  214. But in both cases,

  215. these two affirmations

  216. drive David's prayer for vindication.

  217. And they must also be the things

  218. that drive our prayers

  219. for vindication as well.

  220. So, when facing circumstances

  221. such as David's,

  222. affirming these truths

  223. will lead us to four actions

  224. modeled by David in Psalm 7.

  225. Okay?

  226. We're looking at four actions

  227. modeled by David

  228. for us to follow

  229. in similar circumstances.

  230. Action number one.

  231. Put your ultimate hope

  232. in God.

  233. Put your ultimate hope

  234. in God.

  235. Look again at verses one and two.

  236. Oh, Lord my God,

  237. in you

  238. do I take refuge.

  239. Save me from all my pursuers

  240. and deliver me.

  241. Lest like a lion

  242. they tear my soul apart,

  243. rending it in pieces

  244. with none to deliver.

  245. This is now the third time

  246. that the notion

  247. of taking refuge in God

  248. has been stated

  249. in these opening psalms.

  250. In Psalm 2 and verse 12

  251. we're told,

  252. blessed are all

  253. who take refuge

  254. in God's King,

  255. God's anointed Son.

  256. Psalm 5 verse 11,

    Psalms 5:11

  257. let all who take refuge in you

  258. rejoice,

  259. let them ever sing for joy

  260. and spread your protection

  261. over them

  262. that those who love your name

  263. may exult in you.

  264. refuge.

  265. What is a refuge?

  266. Refuge is simple.

  267. It's a shelter

  268. amidst a storm.

  269. If you ever go golfing

  270. with Terry over at Cowan's Ford

  271. and a storm comes up,

  272. there are various shelters

  273. on the course

  274. where you might hunker down

  275. and take refuge

  276. until the storm passes through.

  277. Every once in a while,

  278. we will have the threat

  279. of a tornado in our area,

  280. which kind of blows my mind

  281. a little bit.

  282. If you're like me,

  283. you grew up watching Twister.

  284. So I thought tornadoes

  285. only happened in Oklahoma,

  286. but apparently

  287. they happen here too.

  288. And I think one of

  289. Julie's deepest fears

  290. is that we will get hit

  291. by a tornado.

  292. And someone told her

  293. at some point along the way

  294. that you know

  295. a tornado is coming

  296. if it sounds like a train,

  297. like a big train

  298. is coming through, right?

  299. And I don't know

  300. how many times

  301. the wind has been howling

  302. during a storm during the night.

  303. And Julie has woken me up,

  304. Jared, is that a train?

  305. Is that a train?

  306. And she'll pull up her app

  307. on her phone

  308. and it'll say

  309. there's a tornado warning

  310. in the area

  311. and Julie is very quick

  312. to gather her brood

  313. and to take us

  314. into the pantry downstairs

  315. in order that we might find refuge

  316. in case the storm

  317. does actually impact our house

  318. and wreck it.

  319. Such is the picture

  320. that David gives us

  321. again and again

  322. in the Psalms

  323. of taking refuge in God.

  324. It is to find shelter

  325. and security in Him

  326. as the storms of your life

  327. roar around you.

  328. In this case,

  329. seeking vindication

  330. when false accusations

  331. have been made about us,

  332. it is only when we have

  333. these two foundational affirmations

  334. in view

  335. that we will truly take refuge

  336. in God as David did.

  337. Isn't that what he does?

  338. He does not appeal

  339. to his own authority here.

  340. He submits his calls

  341. to the Lord.

  342. In you do I take refuge.

  343. Which is significant

  344. for us, isn't it?

  345. Because in situations

  346. like David's,

  347. we are always tempted

  348. to retreat

  349. to our own devices.

  350. we want to defend ourselves,

  351. don't we?

  352. Rightfully so.

  353. Rather than taking refuge

  354. in God,

  355. often,

  356. instead of trusting Him

  357. as the righteous judge,

  358. we seek shelter

  359. in human wisdom.

  360. We'll take matters

  361. into our own hands,

  362. won't we?

  363. It's actually incredible

  364. what this communicates

  365. when we do this kind of thing,

  366. and all of us

  367. are probably guilty

  368. of doing it

  369. at some point along the way

  370. at various trials

  371. in our lives.

  372. What it communicates

  373. is that

  374. what we really believe

  375. in our heart of hearts

  376. is that we will treat

  377. ourselves better

  378. than what God

  379. will treat us

  380. if we submit

  381. to His purposes

  382. in our lives.

  383. Have you ever thought

  384. about that?

  385. When we don't take refuge

  386. in God,

  387. when He is not

  388. the source of our hope

  389. in various situations

  390. of our lives,

  391. what we're saying

  392. is,

  393. God,

  394. I love you,

  395. but I think

  396. I'll take better care

  397. of me now

  398. than what you will

  399. take care of me.

  400. And so we resort

  401. to human devices

  402. all the time,

  403. don't we?

  404. We might consider

  405. in a situation

  406. like David's,

  407. fighting fire

  408. with fire,

  409. sinking into the same sin

  410. as our accusers.

  411. We might insist

  412. on our own innocence

  413. so widely

  414. that what we end up

  415. doing is attracting

  416. suspicion rather

  417. than dispelling it.

  418. And I want to be clear

  419. that to take refuge

  420. in God doesn't mean

  421. that we do nothing.

  422. That's not what it means.

  423. Notice what David does.

  424. David's enemies,

  425. they pursued him

  426. indicating that he

  427. ran away.

  428. He was doing something.

  429. It's not that we do nothing.

  430. It's good and right

  431. to use whatever

  432. righteous means

  433. are available to us

  434. when seeking justice.

  435. And David does

  436. what he needs to do

  437. to escape

  438. but his ultimate hope,

  439. his trust,

  440. was in the Lord.

  441. He submits his calls

  442. to the Lord

  443. when he could run

  444. no further,

  445. when he could do

  446. nothing else.

  447. James Johnston

  448. says this,

  449. I found this so helpful,

  450. if your ultimate hope

  451. is not in God,

  452. anxiety

  453. will churn you up

  454. inside

  455. when you cannot

  456. reverse injustice.

  457. the false accusation

  458. will eat you up

  459. when you cannot

  460. do anything

  461. about it.

  462. So what do we do then?

  463. When we trust that God

  464. is the righteous judge,

  465. I think we'll find it

  466. most natural

  467. to take refuge in him

  468. in seasons of distress.

  469. It doesn't mean

  470. that we never act.

  471. It means that we always

  472. commit our calls

  473. to him.

  474. Like Nehemiah,

  475. as he builds the wall

  476. around Jerusalem,

  477. remember what he did

  478. when he had threats

  479. of enemies

  480. coming against him.

  481. He prays to God

  482. and then what did he do?

  483. He set a guard.

  484. Trusting God

  485. doesn't negate

  486. human action,

  487. but all of our

  488. human action

  489. must be surrendered,

  490. committed to his calls.

  491. Our trust

  492. must not be

  493. in our ability

  494. to fix the problem.

  495. Our trust and hope

  496. must be in God's goodness

  497. as the righteous judge.

  498. Action number two.

  499. Boldly plead

  500. before his throne.

  501. Boldly plead

  502. before his throne.

  503. Look at verses

  504. three through five.

  505. David continues,

  506. O Lord my God,

  507. if I have done this,

  508. if there is wrong

  509. in my hands,

  510. if I have repaid

  511. my friend with evil

  512. or plundered my enemy

  513. without cause,

  514. let the enemy

  515. pursue my soul

  516. and overtake it.

  517. Let him trample

  518. my life to the ground

  519. and lay my glory

  520. in the dust.

  521. Selah.

  522. David claims

  523. his innocence here.

  524. Declares it boldly

  525. before God.

  526. And it bears mentioning

  527. that David

  528. isn't claiming

  529. to be innocent

  530. of all sin.

  531. That's not his claim.

  532. We can read

  533. in other Psalms,

  534. particularly Psalm 51,

  535. that David was very aware

  536. of not only

  537. a sinful behavior

  538. but a sinful condition.

  539. This is not a claim

  540. to total innocence.

  541. We understand that.

  542. It's a claim

  543. to innocence

  544. regarding the charges

  545. that are brought

  546. against him

  547. in this case.

  548. And the nature

  549. of those charges

  550. is revealed

  551. in verse four.

  552. Look at it again.

  553. David's enemy,

  554. Cush the Benjaminite,

  555. accused him of

  556. repaying a friend

  557. with evil

  558. and plundering

  559. an enemy

  560. without cause.

  561. In other words,

  562. David is being

  563. misrepresented

  564. as a tyrant

  565. who is unjustly

  566. hurting others

  567. in pursuit

  568. of personal advantage.

  569. That's the accusation

  570. on the table

  571. against him.

  572. A common sin,

  573. isn't it?

  574. We see this kind

  575. of thing everywhere.

  576. It's not only common,

  577. it's destructive.

  578. And anyone who is guilty

  579. of it

  580. is certainly worthy

  581. of severe consequences.

  582. Sins like this,

  583. they are expressed

  584. on a spectrum,

  585. aren't they?

  586. On one hand,

  587. we would see

  588. this kind of sin

  589. expressed

  590. in the extreme behavior

  591. of a terrorist

  592. who attacks

  593. an enemy

  594. unprovoked,

  595. repaying an enemy

  596. without cause.

  597. It may also be expressed

  598. in a much subtle way,

  599. the betrayal

  600. of a colleague

  601. that is in line

  602. for a promotion

  603. ahead of you,

  604. cheating on your spouse

  605. with the spouse

  606. of a friend,

  607. repaying a friend

  608. with evil things.

  609. And the guilty

  610. would be worthy

  611. of serious consequences.

  612. So this is no

  613. small accusation.

  614. Whatever it is,

  615. whatever this is

  616. in relation to

  617. in David's life,

  618. whether it's

  619. big,

  620. little,

  621. public,

  622. or private,

  623. this is a serious

  624. accusation.

  625. But notice,

  626. David does not

  627. go into detail

  628. to prove his innocence,

  629. at least not

  630. in the psalm.

  631. What does he do?

  632. He takes his case

  633. before the Lord.

  634. He takes his case

  635. before the one

  636. who sees behind

  637. every mask,

  638. who knows the truth

  639. of all of our hearts.

  640. Why?

  641. Because his declaration

  642. of innocence

  643. flows from his belief

  644. that God actually

  645. truly is

  646. the righteous judge.

  647. On the one hand,

  648. it wouldn't make sense

  649. to fake innocence,

  650. feign innocence

  651. before the omniscient

  652. God.

  653. Who knows the truth?

  654. What would be the

  655. purpose in that?

  656. Even more,

  657. if David were

  658. truly guilty,

  659. we know by the

  660. pattern of his life,

  661. he would not have

  662. cried for justice.

  663. He would have

  664. cried for mercy.

  665. And all of these

  666. things point toward

  667. his true innocence.

  668. But it does

  669. something else for us.

  670. it calls us

  671. to examine ourselves

  672. before we make

  673. our appeal to God,

  674. doesn't it?

  675. We should be careful

  676. to know whether

  677. it is justice

  678. or mercy

  679. for which we

  680. should pray.

  681. But in either case,

  682. David teaches us

  683. that we can come

  684. boldly to God's throne

  685. with our pleas.

  686. because he knows

  687. God to be the

  688. righteous judge,

  689. David trusts that

  690. the Lord will indeed

  691. vindicate him

  692. because he knows

  693. himself to be

  694. innocent.

  695. So he doesn't

  696. waste his time

  697. trying to clear

  698. his name

  699. before his enemies.

  700. He takes his

  701. calls to the one

  702. who can actually

  703. exercise true

  704. authority in the

  705. matter.

  706. He commits his

  707. calls to the Lord.

  708. He declares his

  709. innocence to the one

  710. who knows,

  711. to the one who is

  712. the righteous judge,

  713. who will indeed

  714. vindicate him

  715. in time.

  716. Action number three.

  717. David confidently

  718. anticipates true

  719. justice.

  720. David confidently

  721. anticipates true

  722. justice.

  723. Look at verse six.

  724. Arise, O Lord,

  725. in your anger.

  726. Lift yourself up

  727. against the fury

  728. of my enemies.

  729. Awake for me.

  730. You have appointed

  731. a judgment.

  732. Now I want you to

  733. notice just in

  734. between verses

  735. five and six

  736. is that little

  737. word selah.

  738. We've talked about

  739. it a couple of

  740. times already,

  741. haven't we?

  742. There's only one

  743. in this psalm

  744. and its place

  745. in between verses

  746. five and six

  747. signal that there

  748. is a significant

  749. transition happening

  750. in the psalm.

  751. So David has

  752. opened with

  753. an appeal to God

  754. for his refuge.

  755. He has pleaded

  756. his innocence

  757. and now

  758. there's a shift

  759. happening here.

  760. Now he's addressing

  761. God in a different

  762. way.

  763. He calls on God

  764. to take action

  765. now.

  766. Arise with anger.

  767. Lift himself

  768. against his enemies.

  769. Awake for the

  770. appointed judgment.

  771. In other words,

  772. David is painting

  773. a picture for us.

  774. It is time for the

  775. heavenly court

  776. to begin its session

  777. and the song

  778. now brings us

  779. into that courtroom

  780. of the righteous

  781. judge.

  782. And this will

  783. take us almost

  784. to the very end

  785. of the psalm.

  786. And as David

  787. presents us

  788. with the courtroom

  789. of the righteous

  790. judge,

  791. he has two

  792. judgments in view.

  793. First,

  794. a final judgment.

  795. A final judgment.

  796. Look again

  797. at verse six.

  798. He says,

  799. you have appointed

  800. a judgment.

  801. Let the assembly

  802. of the peoples

  803. be gathered about

  804. you over at

  805. return on high.

  806. The Lord judges

  807. the peoples.

  808. Judge me,

  809. O Lord,

  810. according to my

  811. righteousness

  812. and according to

  813. the integrity

  814. that is in me.

  815. O let the evil

  816. of the wicked

  817. come to an end.

  818. And may you

  819. establish the

  820. righteous,

  821. you who test

  822. the minds

  823. and hearts,

  824. O righteous God.

  825. My shield

  826. is with God

  827. who saves

  828. the upright.

  829. In the heart.

  830. Final judgment.

  831. Here,

  832. the attention,

  833. it shifts away

  834. from David's

  835. present circumstance.

  836. And it focuses

  837. momentarily

  838. on God's judgment

  839. of the nations.

  840. Let me prove

  841. that to you, okay?

  842. If you're wondering

  843. how I got to that,

  844. let me show you.

  845. At the end of verse six,

  846. David refers

  847. to an appointed judgment,

  848. a specific judgment

  849. that could be

  850. in just relation

  851. to his circumstance.

  852. I think it probably

  853. has something

  854. more significant

  855. in mind.

  856. And this appointed

  857. judgment,

  858. he goes on to say,

  859. involves all

  860. the peoples.

  861. Peoples

  862. being plural.

  863. These are people,

  864. groups,

  865. nations.

  866. kings.

  867. So that the peoples

  868. in verse seven

  869. and eight,

  870. I believe,

  871. recalls the raging

  872. nations and the plotting

  873. peoples of Psalm 2,

  874. who we read there,

  875. set themselves against God

  876. and his anointed king.

  877. And then he describes

  878. the wicked

  879. in verse nine,

  880. which I believe

  881. refers to those

  882. in Psalm 1

  883. who will not stand

  884. in the judgment,

  885. but will perish

  886. instead.

  887. Now,

  888. David recognizes

  889. that even if he

  890. does not receive

  891. justice now,

  892. I think the picture

  893. he's painting

  894. is that there

  895. is coming a day

  896. when the righteous

  897. judge

  898. will gather

  899. all the wicked,

  900. will carry out

  901. swift

  902. and final

  903. justice

  904. on them.

  905. In other words,

  906. even if Cush

  907. gets away

  908. with the slanderous

  909. lies now,

  910. he will not

  911. get away

  912. with them

  913. forever.

  914. Why?

  915. Because David

  916. knows,

  917. he knows

  918. that God

  919. has appointed

  920. a judgment,

  921. that God

  922. looks at the

  923. peoples

  924. who are raging,

  925. the nations

  926. who are plotting,

  927. and Psalm 2

  928. says he laughs

  929. at them

  930. because they

  931. are all

  932. headed

  933. to an

  934. eventual

  935. judgment

  936. when God

  937. will have

  938. the final

  939. word.

  940. That's the

  941. truth of

  942. the big

  943. picture of

  944. the Bible.

  945. God

  946. creates,

  947. his creation

  948. falls,

  949. and then we

  950. have to ask,

  951. where is all

  952. this going?

  953. And the

  954. Bible gives

  955. us a clear

  956. answer about

  957. that.

  958. All of

  959. creation

  960. is moving

  961. toward a

  962. final

  963. eschatological

  964. judgment

  965. in which

  966. God,

  967. the righteous

  968. judge,

  969. the one

  970. who David

  971. says here,

  972. tests the

  973. hearts and

  974. minds of

  975. us all.

  976. What does

  977. he mean by

  978. that?

  979. He knows

  980. what's true

  981. of every

  982. one of

  983. us.

  984. He knows

  985. what's

  986. true.

  987. No one

  988. will be

  989. able to

  990. stand before

  991. God in

  992. that judgment

  993. and fool

  994. him because

  995. he tests

  996. the minds,

  997. he tests

  998. the hearts,

  999. he sees

  1000. what we do

  1001. not see,

  1002. he understands

  1003. what we do

  1004. not understand,

  1005. he knows

  1006. the truth

  1007. of every

  1008. person.

  1009. And all

  1010. of creation

  1011. is headed

  1012. toward this

  1013. eschatological

  1014. judgment where

  1015. God will bring

  1016. an end to

  1017. evil by

  1018. ruling against

  1019. sinners.

  1020. And the

  1021. Bible makes

  1022. it clear that

  1023. all unrepentant

  1024. sinners will be

  1025. sentenced by

  1026. this righteous

  1027. judge to

  1028. eternity in

  1029. hell.

  1030. Revelation

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  1031. chapter 20

  1032. gives us the

  1033. clearest picture

  1034. of it.

  1035. Then I saw

  1036. a great

  1037. white throne

  1038. and him

  1039. who was

  1040. seated on

  1041. it.

  1042. From his

  1043. presence

  1044. earth and

  1045. sky fled

  1046. away.

  1047. No place

  1048. was found

  1049. for them.

  1050. And I

  1051. saw the

  1052. dead,

  1053. great and

  1054. small,

  1055. in other

  1056. words,

  1057. young and

  1058. old,

  1059. standing

  1060. before the

  1061. throne of

  1062. God.

  1063. And books

  1064. were opened.

  1065. Another book

  1066. was opened,

  1067. which is the

  1068. book of life.

  1069. And the

  1070. dead were

  1071. judged by

  1072. what was

  1073. written in

  1074. the books,

  1075. according to

  1076. what they

  1077. had done.

  1078. And the

  1079. sea gave up

  1080. the dead

  1081. who were in

  1082. it.

  1083. Death and

  1084. Hades gave

  1085. up the

  1086. dead who

  1087. were in

  1088. them.

  1089. And they

  1090. were judged,

  1091. each one of

  1092. them,

  1093. according to

  1094. what they

  1095. had done.

  1096. Then death

  1097. and Hades

  1098. were thrown

  1099. into the

  1100. lake of

  1101. fire.

  1102. This is the

  1103. second death,

  1104. the lake

  1105. of fire.

  1106. And if

  1107. anyone's name

  1108. was not found

  1109. written in the

  1110. book of life,

  1111. he was thrown

  1112. into the

  1113. lake of fire.

  1114. David

  1115. understands.

  1116. He may not

  1117. have been able

  1118. to voice it

  1119. in those

  1120. words like

  1121. John did.

  1122. John had a

  1123. special vision

  1124. to be able

  1125. to write

  1126. that to

  1127. us.

  1128. But David

  1129. understood all

  1130. of this is

  1131. heading toward

  1132. a judgment.

  1133. And even if

  1134. I don't get

  1135. vindication now,

  1136. God will

  1137. vindicate me

  1138. then because

  1139. we will all

  1140. stand before

  1141. him and

  1142. sinners will

  1143. be judged.

  1144. But we're

  1145. reminded here

  1146. also that the

  1147. righteous will

  1148. be saved in

  1149. this final

  1150. judgment.

  1151. Isn't that

  1152. what he says

  1153. here?

  1154. Look again

  1155. at verse

  1156. 8.

  1157. Judge me,

  1158. O Lord,

  1159. according to

  1160. my righteousness,

  1161. according to

  1162. the integrity

  1163. that is in

  1164. me.

  1165. Verse 10,

  1166. my shield is

  1167. with God,

  1168. who saves

  1169. the upright

  1170. in heart.

  1171. So,

  1172. the righteous

  1173. will be saved

  1174. in this final

  1175. judgment.

  1176. No escape.

  1177. But see,

  1178. here's the

  1179. problem.

  1180. the scriptures

  1181. repeatedly

  1182. affirm that

  1183. no one is

  1184. truly righteous.

  1185. That's a

  1186. pretty big

  1187. problem for

  1188. us,

  1189. isn't it?

  1190. If everything

  1191. in creation

  1192. is headed

  1193. toward this

  1194. final eschatological

  1195. judgment,

  1196. and the

  1197. righteous will

  1198. be saved

  1199. then,

  1200. what do we

  1201. do with

  1202. passages like

  1203. Romans 3

  1204. where Paul

  1205. strings together

  1206. a number of

  1207. quotations from

  1208. the Psalms and

  1209. from the

  1210. prophets in

  1211. order that he

  1212. might affirm

  1213. for us that

  1214. there is none

  1215. righteous,

  1216. no not one.

  1217. He goes on to

  1218. say,

  1219. all have turned

  1220. aside,

  1221. all have sinned

  1222. and fallen

  1223. short of the

  1224. glory of God.

  1225. And the

  1226. question then

  1227. becomes,

  1228. how can David

  1229. speak so

  1230. confidently about

  1231. standing in that

  1232. judgment when

  1233. we know he was

  1234. sinful?

  1235. How can he have

  1236. this kind of

  1237. confidence?

  1238. Is this kind

  1239. of confidence

  1240. foolish?

  1241. Can we actually

  1242. have it?

  1243. Can you and

  1244. I be so

  1245. confident as

  1246. David that

  1247. when that

  1248. final judgment

  1249. comes,

  1250. we will stand

  1251. rather than

  1252. perishing with

  1253. the wicked?

  1254. And it's here

  1255. that we must

  1256. remember that

  1257. David often

  1258. speaks prophetically

  1259. in the Psalms,

  1260. doesn't he?

  1261. He's not only

  1262. a king,

  1263. he's the

  1264. Old Testament

  1265. type pointing

  1266. us forward

  1267. to a greater

  1268. David,

  1269. the true and

  1270. better David.

  1271. Jesus Christ.

  1272. David often

  1273. in the Psalms

  1274. he speaks

  1275. his own words

  1276. that are then

  1277. fulfilled,

  1278. not in him,

  1279. but are fulfilled

  1280. in Christ.

  1281. The singular

  1282. me and my

  1283. in verses 8

  1284. are not

  1285. ultimately about

  1286. David,

  1287. they're ultimately

  1288. about Jesus.

  1289. He was truly

  1290. sinless,

  1291. sinless,

  1292. and as the

  1293. sinless son

  1294. laid down

  1295. his life

  1296. in our place

  1297. as a substitute

  1298. for sinners

  1299. who would come

  1300. to him in

  1301. faith.

  1302. And those

  1303. who do come

  1304. to him in

  1305. faith,

  1306. we're told

  1307. are justified,

  1308. that word

  1309. justified,

  1310. it means

  1311. in a legal

  1312. sense,

  1313. to declare

  1314. someone

  1315. righteous

  1316. even though

  1317. they are not

  1318. actually

  1319. righteous.

  1320. righteous.

  1321. And the

  1322. Bible tells us

  1323. that because

  1324. of what Jesus

  1325. has done,

  1326. all who come

  1327. to him in

  1328. faith are

  1329. declared by

  1330. the righteous

  1331. judge to

  1332. be righteous

  1333. even though

  1334. they are not

  1335. actually

  1336. righteous.

  1337. That's why

  1338. he has this

  1339. confidence.

  1340. He may not

  1341. have been able

  1342. to piece all

  1343. of that together

  1344. the way that

  1345. we can looking

  1346. back from a

  1347. New Testament

  1348. perspective,

  1349. but the Lord

  1350. is speaking

  1351. through him

  1352. here.

  1353. Let me prove

  1354. it to you.

  1355. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5:21

  1356. chapter 5

  1357. verse 21.

  1358. For our

  1359. sake he

  1360. made him

  1361. to be sin

  1362. who knew

  1363. no sin.

  1364. Why?

  1365. So that

  1366. in him

  1367. we might

  1368. become the

  1369. righteousness

  1370. of God.

  1371. A transaction

  1372. takes place

  1373. at the cross

  1374. whereby the

  1375. sins of those

  1376. who believe

  1377. are given

  1378. to the one

  1379. who never

  1380. committed a

  1381. sin.

  1382. And that

  1383. transaction

  1384. is completed

  1385. when the

  1386. righteousness

  1387. of the one

  1388. who is truly

  1389. righteous

  1390. is imputed

  1391. onto those

  1392. of us

  1393. who come

  1394. to him

  1395. in faith.

  1396. So that

  1397. in that

  1398. judgment

  1399. as we

  1400. stand before

  1401. the righteous

  1402. judge

  1403. who knows

  1404. our hearts

  1405. who knows

  1406. our minds

  1407. who has

  1408. final authority

  1409. he does not

  1410. look to us

  1411. in righteousness

  1412. he looks to

  1413. the righteous

  1414. one

  1415. who has given

  1416. us his

  1417. righteousness.

  1418. That's how

  1419. we stand

  1420. in that

  1421. judgment.

  1422. It's said

  1423. over and over

  1424. again in the

  1425. scriptures

  1426. Romans chapter

  1427. three we

  1428. are justified

  1429. again declared

  1430. righteous by

  1431. his grace

  1432. as a gift

  1433. through the

  1434. redemption that

  1435. is in Christ

  1436. Jesus whom

  1437. God put

  1438. forward as a

  1439. propitiation by

  1440. his blood to

  1441. be received

  1442. by faith.

  1443. This was to

  1444. show God's

  1445. righteousness

  1446. righteousness

  1447. so that he

  1448. might be

  1449. just

  1450. and the

  1451. justifier

  1452. of the

  1453. one who

  1454. has faith

  1455. in Jesus.

  1456. Don't let

  1457. me lose

  1458. you.

  1459. Think about

  1460. what this

  1461. is saying.

  1462. God the

  1463. righteous

  1464. judge

  1465. is just

  1466. in forgiving

  1467. us

  1468. not because

  1469. he turns a

  1470. blind eye

  1471. to our

  1472. sins

  1473. but because

  1474. he punishes

  1475. his son

  1476. in our

  1477. place

  1478. that he

  1479. might rightly

  1480. as the

  1481. righteous

  1482. judge

  1483. justify

  1484. us

  1485. who

  1486. come to

  1487. him in

  1488. faith.

  1489. Therefore

  1490. Romans 5

  1491. chapter 1

  1492. says therefore

  1493. since we

  1494. have been

  1495. justified

  1496. declared

  1497. righteous

  1498. by faith

  1499. we now

  1500. have peace

  1501. with God

  1502. and we

  1503. have that

  1504. peace

  1505. not through

  1506. our own

  1507. righteousness

  1508. we have

  1509. that peace

  1510. through our

  1511. Lord Jesus

  1512. Christ

  1513. Christ

  1514. which again

  1515. leads us

  1516. to Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1517. chapter 8

  1518. that we read

  1519. earlier in the

  1520. service

  1521. there is

  1522. therefore now

  1523. no condemnation

  1524. for those

  1525. who are in

  1526. Christ Jesus

  1527. Jesus is the

  1528. fulfillment of

  1529. David's words

  1530. here

  1531. in the final

  1532. judgment

  1533. all who

  1534. trust in the

  1535. righteousness

  1536. of Christ

  1537. the blessed

  1538. man

  1539. will be

  1540. saved

  1541. but there's

  1542. another judgment

  1543. that David

  1544. has in view

  1545. here

  1546. it's an

  1547. immediate

  1548. judgment

  1549. an immediate

  1550. judgment

  1551. look with me

  1552. at verse 11

  1553. God is a

  1554. righteous judge

  1555. and a God

  1556. who fills

  1557. indignation

  1558. every day

  1559. if a man

  1560. does not

  1561. repent

  1562. God will

  1563. wet his

  1564. sword

  1565. he has bent

  1566. and readied

  1567. his bow

  1568. he has

  1569. prepared for

  1570. him

  1571. his deadly

  1572. weapons

  1573. making his

  1574. arrows

  1575. fiery shafts

  1576. behold the

  1577. wicked man

  1578. conceives evil

  1579. and is pregnant

  1580. with mischief

  1581. and gives

  1582. birth to lies

  1583. he makes a

  1584. pit

  1585. digging it

  1586. out

  1587. and he

  1588. falls into

  1589. the hole

  1590. that he's

  1591. made

  1592. his mischief

  1593. returns upon

  1594. his own

  1595. head

  1596. and on his

  1597. own skull

  1598. his violence

  1599. descends

  1600. David I

  1601. think now

  1602. turns back

  1603. to his

  1604. present

  1605. circumstance

  1606. though he

  1607. knows a

  1608. final judgment

  1609. is coming

  1610. he also

  1611. recognized

  1612. that God

  1613. often brings

  1614. justice

  1615. in the

  1616. here and

  1617. now

  1618. he declares

  1619. that

  1620. verse 11

  1621. God is a

  1622. righteous judge

  1623. who feels

  1624. indignation

  1625. every day

  1626. that indignation

  1627. is not

  1628. solely reserved

  1629. for the final

  1630. judgment

  1631. it is indicated

  1632. day

  1633. by day

  1634. in other

  1635. words

  1636. while the

  1637. wicked

  1638. await a

  1639. final

  1640. eschatological

  1641. judgment

  1642. the Lord

  1643. also works

  1644. to condemn

  1645. and judge

  1646. their wickedness

  1647. now

  1648. and often

  1649. the way

  1650. God uses

  1651. the weapons

  1652. described in

  1653. verses 12

  1654. and 13

  1655. as wetting

  1656. his sword

  1657. bending

  1658. his bow

  1659. and preparing

  1660. his fiery

  1661. arrows

  1662. often the way

  1663. that God

  1664. carries those

  1665. weapons out

  1666. in judgment

  1667. is by turning

  1668. the wickedness

  1669. of the wicked

  1670. against them

  1671. in verses 15

  1672. and 16

  1673. you see what

  1674. he says there

  1675. the wicked

  1676. makes a pit

  1677. and then he

  1678. falls into it

  1679. not because

  1680. he's a loser

  1681. or just

  1682. really that

  1683. foolish

  1684. but because

  1685. God turns

  1686. his wickedness

  1687. against him

  1688. verse 16

  1689. his mischief

  1690. returns upon

  1691. his own

  1692. head

  1693. his own

  1694. skull

  1695. on his own

  1696. skull

  1697. is violence

  1698. to sins

  1699. this is the

  1700. fiery arrows

  1701. of the Lord

  1702. there is a

  1703. judgment

  1704. and a

  1705. condemnation

  1706. in the here

  1707. and now

  1708. God often

  1709. does carry

  1710. that out

  1711. on behalf

  1712. of his

  1713. people

  1714. how and

  1715. when

  1716. God issues

  1717. his judgment

  1718. is his

  1719. business

  1720. but taking

  1721. refuge in

  1722. him

  1723. means

  1724. confidently

  1725. anticipating

  1726. his judgment

  1727. both now

  1728. and in the

  1729. future

  1730. he is the

  1731. righteous judge

  1732. he will

  1733. vindicate his

  1734. people in one

  1735. way or another

  1736. and that's a

  1737. truth that like

  1738. David you can

  1739. be certain of

  1740. and you can

  1741. take comfort

  1742. in

  1743. he will not

  1744. forsake

  1745. your calls

  1746. he will come

  1747. to your aid

  1748. he will judge

  1749. the wicked

  1750. and you can

  1751. confidently pray

  1752. to him for

  1753. that

  1754. but there's

  1755. an important

  1756. qualification

  1757. in verse 12

  1758. that we

  1759. cannot miss

  1760. notice that

  1761. God's judgment

  1762. here is

  1763. conditional

  1764. he wets

  1765. his sword

  1766. and readies

  1767. his bow

  1768. not against

  1769. all sinners

  1770. but against

  1771. the man

  1772. who does

  1773. not repent

  1774. against the

  1775. man who

  1776. does not

  1777. repent

  1778. this means

  1779. that though

  1780. you deserve

  1781. his judgment

  1782. he's made

  1783. a way

  1784. for you

  1785. to escape

  1786. it

  1787. though we

  1788. all deserve

  1789. his judgment

  1790. he's made

  1791. a way

  1792. for all

  1793. of us

  1794. to escape

  1795. Christ

  1796. has fulfilled

  1797. the law

  1798. on our

  1799. behalf

  1800. and anyone

  1801. who repents

  1802. of their

  1803. sin

  1804. and trust

  1805. in the

  1806. righteousness

  1807. of Christ

  1808. for salvation

  1809. will be

  1810. saved

  1811. from this

  1812. judgment

  1813. notice what

  1814. David says

  1815. if a man

  1816. will not

  1817. repent

  1818. God

  1819. will ready

  1820. his bow

  1821. and wet

  1822. his sword

  1823. implication

  1824. being

  1825. that if a

  1826. man does

  1827. repent

  1828. he will

  1829. be welcomed

  1830. and forgiven

  1831. it also

  1832. means

  1833. that praying

  1834. for justice

  1835. doesn't preclude

  1836. our desire

  1837. for people

  1838. to be saved

  1839. even if it

  1840. means that we

  1841. have to live

  1842. with the

  1843. consequences

  1844. of their

  1845. sin

  1846. against us

  1847. we should

  1848. desire

  1849. first

  1850. that our

  1851. enemies

  1852. turn

  1853. to Christ

  1854. that they

  1855. turn from

  1856. their sin

  1857. and their

  1858. wickedness

  1859. and that

  1860. they trust

  1861. in him

  1862. that like

  1863. us

  1864. they will

  1865. escape

  1866. the judgment

  1867. that we

  1868. all deserve

  1869. to have

  1870. received

  1871. such amazing

  1872. forgiveness

  1873. from God

  1874. should drive

  1875. us to

  1876. extend

  1877. that same

  1878. forgiveness

  1879. to those

  1880. who do

  1881. wrong

  1882. against us

  1883. so that

  1884. while we

  1885. pray for

  1886. God to

  1887. be just

  1888. and to

  1889. bring justice

  1890. we also

  1891. pray that

  1892. he would

  1893. so work

  1894. in their

  1895. hearts

  1896. that they

  1897. would turn

  1898. from their

  1899. sin

  1900. and turn

  1901. to him

  1902. in faith

  1903. and then

  1904. withhold

  1905. that justice

  1906. from them

  1907. that he

  1908. would be

  1909. the righteous

  1910. judge for

  1911. them as he

  1912. has been

  1913. the righteous

  1914. judge

  1915. for us

  1916. remember

  1917. God is

  1918. righteous

  1919. to condemn

  1920. sinners who

  1921. will not

  1922. repent

  1923. and since

  1924. Christ has

  1925. made a

  1926. sufficient

  1927. sacrifice

  1928. for sin

  1929. he is

  1930. righteous

  1931. to forgive

  1932. all who

  1933. seek refuge

  1934. in him

  1935. in either

  1936. case

  1937. our prayers

  1938. are based

  1939. on our

  1940. belief

  1941. that he

  1942. is

  1943. the

  1944. righteous

  1945. judge

  1946. fourth

  1947. action

  1948. final

  1949. action

  1950. worship

  1951. the

  1952. righteous

  1953. Lord

  1954. worship

  1955. the

  1956. righteous

  1957. Lord

  1958. look at

  1959. verse 17

  1960. notice how

  1961. David closes

  1962. this is

  1963. he does

  1964. this so

  1965. often

  1966. it's so

  1967. good

  1968. I will

  1969. give to

  1970. the

  1971. Lord

  1972. the

  1973. thanks

  1974. due

  1975. to

  1976. his

  1977. what's

  1978. that

  1979. next

  1980. word

  1981. righteousness

  1982. I will

  1983. sing

  1984. praise

  1985. to the

  1986. name

  1987. of the

  1988. Lord

  1989. most

  1990. high

  1991. so

  1992. David's

  1993. belief

  1994. in those

  1995. two

  1996. affirmations

  1997. I gave

  1998. you at

  1999. the beginning

  2000. they lead

  2001. him to

  2002. take refuge

  2003. in the

  2004. Lord

  2005. they lead

  2006. him to

  2007. boldly

  2008. declare

  2009. his

  2010. innocence

  2011. before

  2012. the

  2013. Lord

  2014. they lead

  2015. him to

  2016. confidently

  2017. anticipate

  2018. a coming

  2019. judgment

  2020. either

  2021. here and

  2022. now

  2023. or

  2024. ultimately

  2025. in the

  2026. future

  2027. in the

  2028. great

  2029. judgment

  2030. and in

  2031. the end

  2032. all of

  2033. this

  2034. leads

  2035. him to

  2036. worship

  2037. the

  2038. Lord

  2039. specifically

  2040. for

  2041. his

  2042. righteousness

  2043. it gives

  2044. us a

  2045. pattern

  2046. so that

  2047. we can

  2048. specify

  2049. our

  2050. praise

  2051. to

  2052. God

  2053. so that

  2054. in

  2055. similar

  2056. situations

  2057. even if

  2058. they are

  2059. not yet

  2060. resolved

  2061. we might

  2062. knowing

  2063. that God

  2064. is the

  2065. righteous

  2066. judge

  2067. turn our

  2068. praise

  2069. and praise

  2070. him for

  2071. his

  2072. righteousness

  2073. God

  2074. I know

  2075. you're

  2076. the

  2077. righteous

  2078. judge

  2079. I

  2080. know

  2081. that

  2082. you

  2083. will

  2084. vindicate

  2085. your

  2086. people

  2087. because

  2088. of

  2089. Christ

  2090. and I

  2091. praise

  2092. you

  2093. for

  2094. that

  2095. righteousness

  2096. that's

  2097. what

  2098. David

  2099. does

  2100. here

  2101. he

  2102. determines

  2103. to give

  2104. God

  2105. thanks

  2106. do

  2107. his

  2108. righteousness

  2109. and he

  2110. directs

  2111. his song

  2112. to the

  2113. most

  2114. high

  2115. who

  2116. rules

  2117. over

  2118. all

  2119. creation

  2120. indeed

  2121. all

  2122. that

  2123. God

  2124. is

  2125. and

  2126. does

  2127. is

  2128. ultimately

  2129. for

  2130. his

  2131. glory

  2132. and

  2133. when we

  2134. have those

  2135. two

  2136. affirmations

  2137. in view

  2138. our lives

  2139. will pour

  2140. forth

  2141. praise

  2142. to the

  2143. righteous

  2144. judge

  2145. now

  2146. let me finish

  2147. this way

  2148. would you turn

  2149. with me to

  2150. 1st Peter

  2151. chapter 2

  2152. 1st Peter

  2153. chapter 2

  2154. when I step

  2155. back to the

  2156. 30,000 foot

  2157. view again

  2158. of what's

  2159. happening

  2160. in this

  2161. song

  2162. David

  2163. is in a

  2164. circumstance

  2165. where

  2166. an enemy

  2167. has brought

  2168. false

  2169. accusations

  2170. against

  2171. him

  2172. and his

  2173. life is

  2174. in danger

  2175. as a result

  2176. he commits

  2177. his calls

  2178. to the

  2179. Lord

  2180. and he

  2181. must decide

  2182. in doing

  2183. so

  2184. how he

  2185. will

  2186. react

  2187. will he

  2188. react

  2189. in his

  2190. own

  2191. devices

  2192. or will

  2193. he

  2194. commit

  2195. the

  2196. call

  2197. solely

  2198. to

  2199. the

  2200. Lord

  2201. and

  2202. trust

  2203. the

  2204. Lord

  2205. to

  2206. deal

  2207. with

  2208. his

  2209. enemies

  2210. the way

  2211. he

  2212. sees

  2213. fit

  2214. to

  2215. deal

  2216. with

  2217. them

  2218. Jesus

  2219. gives us

  2220. the model

  2221. of this

  2222. 1st Peter

  2223. chapter 2

  2224. verse 22

  2225. Jesus

  2226. committed

  2227. no sin

  2228. neither

  2229. was

  2230. deceit

  2231. found

  2232. in his

  2233. mouth

  2234. though

  2235. he

  2236. was

  2237. accused

  2238. of

  2239. both

  2240. things

  2241. when

  2242. he

  2243. was

  2244. reviled

  2245. he

  2246. did

  2247. not

  2248. revile

  2249. in

  2250. return

  2251. in

  2252. other

  2253. words

  2254. he

  2255. did

  2256. not

  2257. fight

  2258. fire

  2259. with

  2260. fire

  2261. when

  2262. he

  2263. suffered

  2264. he

  2265. did

  2266. not

  2267. threaten

  2268. what

  2269. did

  2270. he

  2271. do

  2272. he

  2273. continued

  2274. entrusting

  2275. himself

  2276. to

  2277. him

  2278. who

  2279. does

  2280. what

  2281. judges

  2282. justly

  2283. the

  2284. righteous

  2285. judge

  2286. and

  2287. how

  2288. did

  2289. he

  2290. do

  2291. that

  2292. he

  2293. himself

  2294. bore

  2295. our

  2296. sins

  2297. in

  2298. his

  2299. body

  2300. on

  2301. the

  2302. tree

  2303. that

  2304. we

  2305. might

  2306. die

  2307. to

  2308. sin

  2309. and

  2310. live

  2311. to

  2312. righteousness

  2313. by

  2314. his

  2315. wounds

  2316. you've

  2317. been

  2318. healed

  2319. for

  2320. you

  2321. were

  2322. straying

  2323. like

  2324. sheep

  2325. but

  2326. now

  2327. returned

  2328. to

  2329. the

  2330. shepherd

  2331. and

  2332. overseer

  2333. of

  2334. your

  2335. souls

  2336. How

  2337. does

  2338. Jesus

  2339. model

  2340. this?

  2341. He

  2342. carries

  2343. it

  2344. out

  2345. to

  2346. its

  2347. fullest

  2348. end

  2349. Jesus

  2350. was

  2351. crucified

  2352. the

  2353. charges

  2354. against

  2355. him

  2356. were

  2357. that

  2358. he

  2359. was

  2360. an

  2361. imposter

  2362. that

  2363. he

  2364. was

  2365. a

  2366. liar

  2367. that

  2368. he

  2369. was

  2370. blasphemous

  2371. that

  2372. he

  2373. had

  2374. made

  2375. himself

  2376. to be

  2377. something

  2378. that

  2379. he

  2380. wasn't

  2381. in

  2382. being

  2383. God

  2384. he

  2385. had

  2386. made

  2387. himself

  2388. equal

  2389. with

  2390. God

  2391. that's

  2392. why

  2393. the

  2394. Jews

  2395. hated

  2396. him

  2397. that's

  2398. why

  2399. they

  2400. murdered

  2401. him

  2402. of

  2403. course

  2404. all

  2405. of

  2406. that

  2407. was

  2408. true

  2409. about

  2410. him

  2411. not

  2412. that

  2413. he

  2414. had

  2415. sinned

  2416. in

  2417. those

  2418. ways

  2419. but

  2420. that

  2421. he

  2422. actually

  2423. is

  2424. God

  2425. and

  2426. he

  2427. had

  2428. no

  2429. to

  2430. sin

  2431. there

  2432. was

  2433. no

  2434. deceit

  2435. in

  2436. his

  2437. mouth

  2438. he

  2439. was

  2440. not

  2441. saying

  2442. that

  2443. he

  2444. was

  2445. something

  2446. that

  2447. he

  2448. was

  2449. not

  2450. he

  2451. could

  2452. have

  2453. poured

  2454. out

  2455. wrath

  2456. on

  2457. them

  2458. then

  2459. he

  2460. had

  2461. authority

  2462. to

  2463. do

  2464. that

  2465. just

  2466. as

  2467. David

  2468. had

  2469. a

  2470. certain

  2471. measure

  2472. of

  2473. authority

  2474. to

  2475. carry

  2476. out

  2477. that

  2478. judgment

  2479. against

  2480. Cush

  2481. the

  2482. Benjamin

  2483. night

  2484. to

  2485. the

  2486. one

  2487. who

  2488. judges

  2489. justly

  2490. which

  2491. meant

  2492. that

  2493. it

  2494. cost

  2495. him

  2496. his

  2497. life

  2498. he

  2499. knew

  2500. that

  2501. his

  2502. vindication

  2503. would

  2504. come

  2505. and

  2506. it

  2507. did

  2508. come

  2509. it

  2510. came

  2511. in

  2512. his

  2513. resurrection

  2514. three

  2515. days

  2516. after

  2517. they

  2518. murdered

  2519. him

  2520. for

  2521. something

  2522. he

  2523. did

  2524. not

  2525. do

  2526. God

  2527. raised

  2528. him

  2529. from

  2530. the

  2531. dead

  2532. in

  2533. Acts

  2534. 2

  2535. or

  2536. yeah

  2537. Acts

  2538. 2

  2539. Peter

  2540. says

  2541. because

  2542. death

  2543. had

  2544. no

  2545. claim

  2546. on

  2547. him

  2548. he

  2549. was

  2550. sinless

  2551. his

  2552. vindication

  2553. is

  2554. seen

  2555. in

  2556. his

  2557. resurrection

  2558. our

  2559. vindication

  2560. in

  2561. relation

  2562. to

  2563. whatever

  2564. it

  2565. may

  2566. be

  2567. will

  2568. also

  2569. be

  2570. seen

  2571. in

  2572. our

  2573. resurrection

  2574. you

  2575. may

  2576. not

  2577. receive

  2578. justice

  2579. for

  2580. the

  2581. wrongs

  2582. committed

  2583. against

  2584. you

  2585. now

  2586. you

  2587. will

  2588. be

  2589. vindicated

  2590. on

  2591. the

  2592. day

  2593. that

  2594. the

  2595. Lord

  2596. returns

  2597. and

  2598. the

  2599. dead

  2600. Christ

  2601. are

  2602. raised

  2603. and

  2604. we

  2605. are

  2606. transformed

  2607. and

  2608. we

  2609. are

  2610. forever

  2611. with

  2612. the

  2613. Lord

  2614. indication

  2615. will

  2616. come

  2617. you

  2618. don't

  2619. have

  2620. to

  2621. have

  2622. it

  2623. now

  2624. it

  2625. would

  2626. be

  2627. nice

  2628. wouldn't

  2629. it

  2630. you

  2631. don't

  2632. have

  2633. to

  2634. have

  2635. it

  2636. now

  2637. your

  2638. future

  2639. is

  2640. certain

  2641. it

  2642. is

  2643. certain

  2644. better

  2645. better

  2646. better

  2647. better

  2648. better

  2649. better

  2650. better

  2651. better

  2652. better

  2653. !

  2654. better

  2655. better

  2656. better

2657. sinner who has ever lived, including our enemies.

2658. And may that be a comfort to us and a help to us in times like David's.
