  1. I told you last week a little bit about my grandmother and her legacy of faith.

  2. On Wednesday, it was a privilege of mine to preside over the graveside portion of her funeral service.

  3. And as is my routine in situations like this, as many of you have witnessed me do in the past,

  4. I like to read from this particular passage in John 11

  5. and challenge those who are gathered in that moment to focus briefly on what comes after death.

  6. Burials in particular, they have a way of forcing us to consider our own mortality.

  7. We stood in West Virginia, in Logan County, West Virginia, on Wednesday in the middle of a graveyard

  8. and we looked around, thousands and thousands of graves all around us on this hillside in the mountains.

  9. And you can't stand there in that moment with a hole in the ground in front of you about to bury someone

  10. and not be confronted with the fact that your day is coming.

  11. It may have been my grandmother in that box that was buried this week,

  12. but each of us are going to have our turn.

  13. And we stand there, we look around and we see how death reigns in this life

  14. and we can't help but ask certain questions.

  15. Is this really all there is?

  16. Is this it?

  17. We live, we do the best we can, we try to leave a better world than what we came into,

  18. which never actually happens, but we try.

  19. And then we just die and that's it?

  20. Is this really all that there is?

  21. Is there any part of us that lives on?

  22. And if there is, what is the nature of that existence?

  23. That's what moments like that force us to think about and to ask.

  24. How does any of this affect the way that we should live now?

  25. Is another question that we might ask.

  26. These are all important questions.

  27. I actually believe that the Bible gives us answers to those questions

  28. that are not only intellectually credible,

  29. but are actually existentially satisfying, joyful, and hopeful.

  30. Unfortunately, it often takes the passing of someone that we love or know

  31. for us to think about death and what may come after it.

  32. Even as Christians, we have resurrection and life at the very heart of our belief system,

  33. of our entire worldview, of all that we believe.

  34. At the very heart of it is resurrection and life,

  35. and yet we don't often talk about the hope of resurrection,

  36. at least not as often as you might think we would.

  37. Perhaps even the extent of your thoughts of resurrection and life

  38. are limited to moments like that.

  39. Maybe funerals, maybe the annual Easter service.

  40. But beyond that, we do our best to put it out of our minds, don't we?

  41. I want to challenge you to not do that now.

  42. That just for a few minutes this morning,

  43. that you would consider these things with me.

  44. There are promises in this text that Jesus makes

  45. that can bring unimaginable hope to those who are trying to sort this out,

  46. that are trying to sort out what death is like

  47. and if anything actually comes after.

  48. There's also fresh encouragement here for believers

  49. who are moving ever closer to that day.

  50. There's joy to those who are burdened by life,

  51. suffering in a fallen world in which we live.

  52. So this text, it gives us hope,

  53. it gives us encouragement,

  54. it gives us joy.

  55. And my prayer is that as we work through it together,

  56. that the Spirit of God would bring an abundant supply

  57. of all three of those things, okay?

  58. So that's why we're doing this this morning.

  59. First thing I want you to see is a tragic circumstance.

  60. A tragic circumstance.

  61. Look with me again at verse 17.

  62. Now when Jesus came,

  63. he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.

  64. Bethany was near Jerusalem about two miles off

  65. and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary

  66. to console them concerning their brother.

  67. Have you ever heard of auto-resuscitation?

  68. Those of you who are in the medical community

  69. certainly know if you like to watch murder mysteries,

  70. you probably know about this as well.

  71. Auto-resuscitation is a medical term

  72. that refers to a patient who within a few minutes

  73. after being declared dead due to cardiac arrest,

  74. suddenly shows signs of life.

  75. It's a rare phenomenon.

  76. It doesn't happen very often,

  77. but when it does happen, it's unique.

  78. And it would cause you to think

  79. that though this person was dead,

  80. now they have suddenly been brought back to life.

  81. When in reality, they were never truly dead.

  82. They're on the line of death,

  83. but their reviving is not really the result of a death.

  84. But it's just that they haven't died all the way.

  85. And unfortunately, when this happens,

  86. even this auto-resuscitation,

  87. typically the patients that experience this

  88. don't live beyond that moment for very long.

  89. There's another name that this phenomenon is referred to.

  90. It's called the Lazarus effect.

  91. And it's called that based on the story

  92. that we read in John chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  93. But what happens to these patients

  94. who experience this phenomenon

  95. and what happened to Lazarus in John chapter 11

    John 11 chapter mention

  96. are not at all the same.

  97. What we find in John 11

  98. is that by the time Jesus arrived in Bethany

  99. where Lazarus and his sisters lived,

  100. Lazarus had been dead and entombed for four days.

  101. We're not talking about a few minutes after CPR has ended

  102. and now suddenly there's signs of life.

  103. We're talking about dead, wrapped, buried for four days.

  104. His was not a pseudo death.

  105. It was an actual death.

  106. In fact, Jesus is, if you read earlier in the passage,

  107. you'll find that Jesus' delay in coming to Bethany,

  108. even after he knew that Lazarus was sick,

  109. was for this very purpose.

  110. It was to emphasize the fact

  111. that Lazarus was actually dead,

  112. which is further confirmed by the fact

  113. that many of the Jews who had traveled from Jerusalem

  114. to comfort Lazarus' sisters, Martha and Mary.

  115. So you can imagine with me

  116. exactly the way that this works now with our own families.

  117. The Jews, they didn't embalm their dead,

  118. which would be the reason for a very quick burial

  119. or an entombment of Lazarus' body.

  120. But for days following that, friends, family, loved ones,

  121. sometimes maybe even professional mourners,

  122. they make their way to Martha and Mary

  123. and they grieve with them over the death of their brother,

  124. just like you've experienced before.

  125. For days, sometimes weeks,

  126. we experience this process of grief.

  127. Well, that's exactly what they're going through.

  128. And when Jesus arrived,

  129. he found his dear friends, many others,

  130. mourning as every other family does.

  131. They lose a loved one.

  132. That's why we say this was a tragic circumstance,

  133. a grieving circumstance.

  134. The truth is that death is always a tragedy, always.

  135. It's always a tragedy that must be mourned

  136. by those who understand why it happens.

  137. It doesn't matter what the circumstances are

  138. surrounding a person's death.

  139. It's not the circumstances themselves

  140. that dictate the level of tragedy that exists in death.

  141. It is the death itself that is tragic.

  142. Even when it's expected or even painless,

  143. it's still tragic.

  144. And the reason for that is that death

  145. is an aberration of God's good design in creation.

  146. We think of death as a natural part of life.

  147. But according to the scripture,

  148. death is the most unnatural part of life.

  149. And to understand that,

  150. we go all the way back to the beginning.

  151. Adam and Eve were created to live.

  152. They were created to not only live a quantity of life,

  153. they were created to live a quality of life.

  154. They were to enjoy intimate fellowship

  155. with their creator.

  156. They were to bear his image.

  157. They were to rule over his creation.

  158. They were created for life.

  159. But God made it clear to them

  160. that disobedience would result in death.

  161. We find it in Genesis chapter two.

  162. The Lord God took the man

  163. and put him in the garden of Eden

  164. to work it and keep it.

  165. And the Lord God commanded the man saying,

  166. you may surely eat of every tree in the garden,

  167. but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,

  168. you shall not eat.

  169. For in the day that you eat of it,

  170. you shall surely die.

  171. We're introduced to death through disobedience.

  172. It wasn't that the tree in the midst of the garden

  173. had a poisonous fruit.

  174. That is not what it was.

  175. Everything that God created was good.

  176. Very good, he says at the end of creation.

  177. It's not that there was a defect in the creation.

  178. It was a problem simply because God said,

  179. don't eat of this one.

  180. Because when you eat of this one,

  181. you will be in disobedience to me.

  182. And if you disobey,

  183. that is the moment that you will be introduced to death.

  184. That's our introduction to death.

  185. They weren't created for that.

  186. It came as a result of their sin.

  187. And as a result of Adam and Eve's sin,

  188. the Bible tells us that the good world

  189. that God created was plunged into fallenness,

  190. a state in which death instead of life now reigns.

  191. Think about it.

  192. There's wonderful beauty in creation,

  193. but even the cycles of the seasons

  194. are representative of the fact that death reigns.

  195. And it is only of God's grace

  196. that life continues to be reproduced

  197. even through the death

  198. that will come in a few moments

  199. through the fall season and into winter.

  200. God graciously brings life again.

  201. But isn't that just a reminder?

  202. Death reigns here.

  203. Things die.

  204. People die.

  205. And there's nothing we can do to stop it.

  206. Death exists because of sin.

  207. And we all die because we're all sinners.

  208. There's two aspects of this that the Bible talks about.

  209. Two aspects of the reason that sin brings death.

  210. First, death continues in this life and in this world

  211. because of Adam's original sin.

  212. All of humanity is guilty in Adam

  213. so that by our very nature,

  214. we rebel against God.

  215. It's not just our behavior

  216. that needs to be redeemed or modified.

  217. It is our very nature

  218. that has to be redeemed by God for life.

  219. This is what the book of Romans tells us.

  220. Romans chapter five.

  221. Sin came into the world through one man

  222. and death through sin.

  223. So death has spread to all men because all sin.

  224. It goes on to say,

  225. because of one man's trespass,

  226. that being Adam,

  227. death reigned through that one man.

  228. Again, he says,

  229. one trespass led to condemnation for all men.

  230. And again,

  231. by the one man's disobedience,

  232. the many were made sinners.

  233. So there's this one dynamic

  234. where the Bible talks about sin and death,

  235. death continuing to reign

  236. because of Adam's original sin.

  237. But that's not the only way that it talks about it.

  238. Second, death continues because sin continues.

  239. Though we're all guilty in Adam,

  240. each of us bears his or own personal guilt.

  241. Because we are sinners in Adam,

  242. we all continue in sin of our own volition,

  243. of our own choice.

  244. Romans three.

  245. All have sinned.

  246. Every person.

  247. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

  248. Do you see this?

  249. Death reigns because of Adam.

  250. Death also reigns because of you.

  251. Because of me.

  252. Sin always brings it.

  253. Death is a tragedy because,

  254. that must be mourned

  255. because it is the result of our sin against God.

  256. It's not just a biological process.

  257. It's the ultimate consequence of our sinfulness.

  258. It's also our greatest enemy.

  259. None of us can overcome it.

  260. No matter how clean we eat,

  261. no matter how often we exercise,

  262. no matter how morally we live,

  263. we cannot defeat death.

  264. It's inevitable.

  265. And it's inevitable

  266. because it is God's judgment

  267. against sinful creatures.

  268. So as Jesus comes to Bethany,

  269. as he sees Mary and Martha

  270. and those of the Jews from Jerusalem

  271. who are mourning the loss of Lazarus,

  272. their friend and their brother,

  273. the mourning on one hand

  274. comes from the fact that they lost someone

  275. that they love,

  276. but there is a deeper kind of mourning

  277. that acknowledges that death reigns

  278. and we can't defeat it.

  279. So Jesus comes upon this tragic circumstance

  280. in Bethany,

  281. but it was for this very tragedy

  282. that he came into the world to begin with,

  283. which brings us to our next point.

  284. We see a tragic circumstance,

  285. but then second,

  286. we see a hopeful exchange,

  287. a hopeful exchange.

  288. Look at verse 20.

  289. 20.

  290. So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming,

  291. she went and met him,

  292. but Mary remained seated in the house.

  293. Martha said to Jesus,

  294. Lord, if you had been here,

  295. my brother would not have died,

  296. but even now I know

  297. that whatever you ask from God,

  298. God will give you.

  299. Jesus said to her,

  300. your brother will rise again.

  301. And Martha said,

  302. I know that he will rise again

  303. in the resurrection on the last day.

  304. This is a hopeful exchange, isn't it?

  305. Lazarus and Martha and Mary,

  306. they were dear friends of the Lord Jesus.

  307. Martha wastes no time getting to Jesus

  308. when she finds that he is nearby.

  309. And what is evident in her exchange with Jesus

  310. is that she was full of faith.

  311. And as a result of her faith,

  312. she was given tremendous hope.

  313. She found amazing hope

  314. in Jesus Christ.

  315. Look just a little closer

  316. at what she said in verse 21.

  317. Martha said to Jesus,

  318. Lord, if you'd been here,

  319. my brother would not have died.

  320. But even now I know

  321. that whatever you ask from God,

  322. God will give you.

  323. You know, living in a text-dominant society

  324. has its pros and its cons.

  325. And one of the cons is

  326. it is so hard sometimes

  327. to discern tone

  328. and mood

  329. and intention

  330. when somebody sends you a text message

  331. or an email

  332. or a letter, right?

  333. Sometimes you may be able

  334. to make certain assumptions

  335. that are generally accurate,

  336. but how many of you

  337. have ever gotten yourself in a mess

  338. because you made certain assumptions

  339. about somebody's motives

  340. or tones in a text message

  341. that weren't true,

  342. but it's just hard to figure that out.

  343. I think that's what has happened

  344. in some places

  345. with this particular text.

  346. We read on the page

  347. what Martha says.

  348. We're not told a lot about her tone

  349. or the motive behind it.

  350. And I think what that has produced

  351. in some places

  352. is some assumptions

  353. that are unhelpful.

  354. Some suppose that

  355. Martha was rebuking the Lord here,

  356. that she believed Jesus

  357. should have been there

  358. to prevent Lazarus' death.

  359. And by not being there,

  360. that there was an injustice in Jesus,

  361. that there was a problem

  362. with his care

  363. and his friendship to them,

  364. and that as she runs to Jesus

  365. when he's nearby,

  366. they take this statement

  367. by Martha as a complaint,

  368. as a rebuke.

  369. Lord, if you had been here,

  370. this would not have happened to me.

  371. We read it with that kind of tone.

  372. I'm not persuaded

  373. that that's actually

  374. what Martha intends

  375. to communicate here.

  376. I don't think that's

  377. what she was doing at all.

  378. I don't think she was

  379. rebuking the Lord.

  380. I think she was finding comfort

  381. in the Lord in this moment.

  382. I think she was expressing her faith

  383. in what Christ would have done

  384. had he been in Bethany

  385. at the time of Lazarus' death.

  386. No doubt she had seen Jesus heal

  387. miraculously many, many times before.

  388. She knew who he was.

  389. She knew what he was capable of.

  390. And I think in this moment

  391. as she runs to him for comfort,

  392. she acknowledges in this moment

  393. that Jesus, I know that if you'd been here,

  394. he wouldn't be dead.

  395. You would have healed him

  396. because you're the Christ.

  397. You're the son of God.

  398. You have the power over sickness.

  399. I know you would have done this.

  400. I think that's probably

  401. what she's saying here.

  402. And I think that's further indicated

  403. in her second statement.

  404. But even though you weren't here then,

  405. you're here now,

  406. and I know that since you're here now,

  407. you're gonna pray

  408. and God's gonna do something good here.

  409. He's gonna bring something good about this

  410. because that's what you do, Jesus.

  411. You bring good things.

  412. This is a sign of faith.

  413. This is comfort.

  414. This is hope.

  415. Though she was hurting,

  416. she knew that Jesus would bring something good

  417. through her trial.

  418. I don't think she had any idea

  419. of what he would do.

  420. I don't think she has resurrection in mind here.

  421. I think that's pretty clear.

  422. But she did believe that he would do something.

  423. And how Jesus responded to her

  424. was so unbelievable

  425. that she completely missed it.

  426. Look at verse 23,

  427. what Jesus says.

  428. Jesus said to her,

  429. your brother will rise again.

  430. And notice how she responds.

  431. She misses it.

  432. Notice how she responds.

  433. By the way,

  434. we probably would have missed it too.

  435. She said,

  436. yeah, Lord,

  437. I know there's a great resurrection

  438. coming on the last day

  439. and he's gonna be raised then.

  440. That's not what Jesus has in mind.

  441. Jesus knew what he was there to do.

  442. He was there to bring Lazarus back to life

  443. in that moment,

  444. in front of those people.

  445. And in this exchange,

  446. as Martha trustingly confessed her hope in Christ,

  447. Jesus gave her a hope that she had not even,

  448. up to that point,

  449. imagined.

  450. A physical resurrection

  451. was not anywhere on Martha's radar here.

  452. But that's what Jesus promised.

  453. It's amazing, isn't it?

  454. Jesus always brings hope to our distress.

  455. And the hope that he brings

  456. is often greater than what we ever expect

  457. or anticipate or imagine

  458. so that when that offer is pronounced,

  459. often we miss it.

  460. What comfort this would have been to Martha

  461. if she had realized in that moment

  462. what Jesus was actually saying.

  463. No, you will be reunited with Lazarus today.

  464. It's amazing, isn't it?

  465. It's hopeful.

  466. In the context of giving us hope

  467. in the face of death,

  468. the fact is that many people just believe

  469. that Jesus' offer is just too good to be true.

  470. We often think that skeptics of Christianity

  471. and of our faith

  472. always have a whole list of reasons

  473. as to why they don't believe.

  474. And honestly, that's just not always the case.

  475. It's not often the case

  476. as much as we might think.

  477. I'm convinced that there are many people

  478. who just have a hard time believing

  479. that something so good could be true.

  480. Why?

  481. We're immersed in a world where death reigns,

  482. where suffering rules,

  483. where life is hard,

  484. where good news is scarce.

  485. And to come across this kind of news,

  486. this kind of hopefulness,

  487. is hard to believe.

  488. Jesus always comes through on his promises, doesn't he?

  489. With him alone, there actually is real hope for you.

  490. There's real hope,

  491. lasting hope for life.

  492. But let's think for just a moment

  493. about how Martha responded to Jesus' promise.

  494. Again, she missed what he meant to say.

  495. She would understand it soon enough.

  496. But she did acknowledge a theological truth

  497. that I think is good for us to remember.

  498. Immediate resurrection was not on her mind,

  499. but she did believe that there would be a future resurrection

  500. in which the souls of believers

  501. that have gone on to be with the Lord

  502. will be reunited with a body

  503. and will be transformed to a glorified body.

  504. This was rabbinic teaching.

  505. This was common beliefs among the Jews at the time.

  506. But it was also what Jesus taught.

  507. Think about this from John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  508. Jesus says,

  509. Now let's pause for just a second.

  510. Jesus is speaking of life and resurrection and death here

  511. in a spiritual sense.

  512. In verse 25, when he says,

  513. An hour is coming and is now here

  514. when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God

  515. and will live.

  516. He's speaking about spiritual death,

  517. that in our sins, as Ephesians 1 says,

  518. that we are dead in our trespasses and sin.

  519. We're in bondage to sin.

  520. We're not dying.

  521. We're dead.

  522. Jesus is alluding to that here in this passage

  523. and he says that it's even here now

  524. that as he preaches his gospel,

  525. he is bringing dead people to life,

  526. spiritually speaking.

  527. But then he goes on in the passage

  528. and he moves on to a different kind of resurrection.

  529. He continues,

  530. And he has given him authority to execute judgment

  531. because he's the Son of Man.

  532. Do not marvel at this.

  533. For an hour is coming.

  534. Notice he doesn't say at this point and is now here

  535. because he's speaking of something different now.

  536. He says that an hour is coming

  537. when all who are in the tombs

  538. will hear his voice and come out.

  539. Those who have done good to the resurrection of life,

  540. those who have done evil

  541. to the resurrection of judgment.

  542. This was Jesus' teaching too.

  543. This is what Martha is referring to.

  544. The Bible teaches that one day,

  545. all of us,

  546. believers and non-believers alike,

  547. will be raised from the dead.

  548. Our souls will be reunited with a body

  549. and we will stand before God in judgment.

  550. Those who do not repent and trust Christ

  551. will be cast into eternal hell.

  552. You can read about that

  553. in Revelation chapter 20 verses 13 through 15.

    Revelation 20:13–15

  554. But those whom Jesus has saved will be transformed,

  555. given a body that will never die again,

  556. and they will forever be with the Lord.

  557. You can read about that in 1 Corinthians chapter 15.

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  558. But think about it as a promise from Jesus in John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  559. And this is the will of him who sent me,

  560. that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me,

  561. but I will raise them up on the last day.

  562. Now I told you at the beginning,

  563. this passage, it contains hope

  564. for those who are trying to sort out the reality of death

  565. and the possibility of life thereafter.

  566. But it also brings encouragement and joy

  567. to those of us who have already received Christ

  568. as Lord and Savior.

  569. Think about what this means.

  570. Jesus promises with an amazing hope in John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  571. that he will not lose any of us,

  572. that no amount of sin in your life,

  573. no amount of fallenness in you

  574. will ever cause Jesus to say,

  575. you know what, I think I'm gonna lose that one

  576. because they just haven't met the mark

  577. the way that I want them to meet the mark.

  578. That will never happen.

  579. He will never accidentally leave you behind.

  580. He says, all that the Father has given me,

  581. I won't lose any of them,

  582. but I will, on the last day,

  583. raise them up to an embodied eternity with me.

  584. This is an amazing hope that we cling to

  585. when we acknowledge that death reigns around us.

  586. The Christian worldview looks through the pages

  587. of the scripture and says,

  588. oh, but Jesus has paid the price for my death

  589. and he will raise me up

  590. and he will not leave me behind.

  591. What a glorious hope that is.

  592. For it not to be true

  593. would mean that either Jesus is incapable of doing it,

  594. which we know is not true,

  595. because he himself conquered death

  596. and his own resurrection.

  597. So we know he's capable.

  598. He has power over death.

  599. Or it means that he is unwilling.

  600. But he's the one who came to us.

  601. He's the one who promises

  602. not to leave one believer behind

  603. that belongs to him.

  604. Scripture proves that both of those statements

  605. are untrue.

  606. Jesus is capable.

  607. And he is willing.

  608. And we cling to that in hope, don't we?

  609. It's a hopeful exchange.

  610. A wonderful hope that Martha believed

  611. was true for her brother,

  612. but Jesus had an even greater promise

  613. for her to hear,

  614. which brings us to the final point of the sermon.

  615. A glorious promise.

  616. We've seen a tragic circumstance,

  617. a hopeful exchange,

  618. now a glorious promise.

  619. Verse 25.

  620. Jesus responds to her.

  621. He says,

  622. Martha,

  623. I am the resurrection and the life.

  624. Whoever believes in me,

  625. though he die,

  626. yet he shall live.

  627. There is life beyond this.

  628. And everyone who lives and believes in me

  629. shall never die.

  630. Do you believe this?

  631. And she said,

  632. yes, Lord.

  633. I believe that you're the Christ,

  634. the Son of God,

  635. who is coming into the world.

  636. Jesus responded that he would not merely

  637. bring about a resurrection,

  638. but that he himself

  639. is resurrection and life.

  640. He is God,

  641. the creator.

  642. His very essence

  643. is resurrection and life.

  644. And any hope of experiencing

  645. either one of those things

  646. can be found only

  647. in him.

  648. The ESV study Bible

  649. has a really helpful note here.

  650. It says,

  651. resurrection from the dead

  652. and genuine eternal life

  653. and fellowship with God

  654. are so closely tied to Jesus

  655. that they are embodied in him

  656. and can be found

  657. only in relationship

  658. to him.

  659. Now,

  660. the primary issue

  661. that we're considering this morning

  662. concerns whether

  663. death is the ultimate end

  664. or if there is something else

  665. that follows.

  666. It's the primary idea

  667. that we're considering

  668. from the beginning.

  669. Is there any real hope

  670. of life after death?

  671. And Jesus answers that here

  672. with a resounding yes.

  673. Yes, there is.

  674. And I want you to think carefully

  675. about the promise that he makes.

  676. Verse 25.

  677. Whoever believes in me,

  678. though he die,

  679. yet shall he live.

  680. And everyone who lives

  681. and believes in me

  682. shall never die.

  683. So after declaring

  684. that he is,

  685. in his very essence,

  686. the power of resurrection

  687. and life,

  688. that he is the giver of it,

  689. that he has power over it,

  690. he promises that

  691. all who believe in him,

  692. even though they will face death

  693. in this life,

  694. will receive the life

  695. that he offers.

  696. Glorious promise.

  697. Is there life after death?

  698. Yes.

  699. How can you receive it?

  700. Jesus says,

  701. by trusting me for it.

  702. But still,

  703. we need to clarify

  704. what this belief is

  705. and what it isn't.

  706. The faith that Jesus speaks of here,

  707. it's not merely

  708. an intellectual acknowledgement

  709. of a set of facts about him.

  710. That's not what he means by belief.

  711. The best word

  712. in our modern English

  713. to use to understand

  714. this kind of belief

  715. is trust.

  716. Trust.

  717. The one who believes in Christ

  718. trusts

  719. that God will accept him,

  720. not based on personal righteousness,

  721. not based on our own goodness,

  722. not based on our own morality,

  723. or of our goodness

  724. outweighing our badness,

  725. or of us crossing

  726. the grading curve

  727. so that those who are

  728. more wicked than us

  729. maybe will suffer,

  730. but since we kind of

  731. passed the mark,

  732. we will be accepted.

  733. Trusting Christ

  734. is to acknowledge

  735. that God will not accept me

  736. because of anything

  737. that may be good in me.

  738. That God accepts me,

  739. justifies me,

  740. based on Christ's

  741. perfect righteousness.

  742. That on the cross,

  743. he takes my sin

  744. in order that by faith,

  745. he may impute his righteousness

  746. into me and onto me.

  747. That we are not justified

  748. by our works,

  749. we are justified by his works

  750. through faith.

  751. Trusting Jesus is to face death.

  752. Trusting entirely

  753. that Jesus has power over life

  754. and that he will indeed

  755. grant you that life

  756. if you have come to him

  757. in repentance and faith.

  758. It is to trust Christ enough

  759. that you turn away from sin

  760. to obedience

  761. and that you abandon

  762. all other influences,

  763. religious or secular,

  764. in order to cling to him alone

  765. by faith.

  766. That's the belief

  767. that he means to indicate here.

  768. It's not just saying,

  769. yes, he lived,

  770. he died,

  771. he rose,

  772. he did the things.

  773. It's not just to acknowledge

  774. a set of facts about him.

  775. It's about trusting him wholly

  776. for this life

  777. and resurrection.

  778. And he promises

  779. that whoever will do that,

  780. whoever trusts him

  781. for eternal life

  782. will receive it.

  783. Will receive it.

  784. But how can we be so sure?

  785. How can we be so sure

  786. as to trust him?

  787. We don't trust the promise

  788. because Jesus raised Lazarus

  789. from the dead.

  790. That's an amazing miracle.

  791. If you just keep reading,

  792. maybe this afternoon

  793. through John chapter 11,

    John 11 chapter mention

  794. you'll see exactly how that happened

  795. and how it unfolded.

  796. It's amazing.

  797. It's an amazing miracle.

  798. We don't trust this promise

  799. because he raised Lazarus

  800. from the dead.

  801. That's not why.

  802. We trust this promise

  803. because Jesus himself

  804. rose from the dead.

  805. That's the proof of it.

  806. That's the power

  807. of it.

  808. The miracle with Lazarus

  809. was amazing.

  810. But it was a means

  811. to a more excellent end.

  812. Jesus raising Lazarus

  813. was a foretaste

  814. of his own resurrection

  815. and of our future resurrection

  816. through him.

  817. Our hope is not

  818. in what he did

  819. for somebody else,

  820. but it's in the fact

  821. that he proved himself

  822. to be the resurrection

  823. and the life

  824. when he rose from the dead

  825. three days after his crucifixion.

  826. His resurrection

  827. makes all the difference.

  828. How can we trust

  829. that he actually

  830. has power over death?

  831. Because death

  832. could not hold him.

  833. It's Peter's answer

  834. in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  835. It had no claim on him.

  836. Why did it have

  837. no claim on him

  838. when it has a claim

  839. on everybody else?

  840. Because he's the sinless

  841. son of God.

  842. He was not in Adam

  843. as we are in Adam.

  844. That's the significance

  845. of our Christmas celebration.

  846. That in the incarnation,

  847. he is the son of God.

  848. God, a miracle

  849. by the Holy Spirit,

  850. his incarnation

  851. coming into the Virgin Mary.

  852. He is not in Adam

  853. as we are in Adam

  854. and yet he is fully human.

  855. He's sinless.

  856. Death has no claim on him.

  857. So he's not bound by it.

  858. We are bound by it.

  859. Which means if we're dead

  860. in our sins,

  861. we need something

  862. that is alive

  863. or better someone

  864. who is alive

  865. to raise us.

  866. And there's only one

  867. who fits the bill.

  868. And it's not Lazarus.

  869. It's Jesus.

  870. As the song says,

  871. because he lives,

  872. I can face tomorrow.

  873. Because he lives,

  874. all fear is gone.

  875. Because I know

  876. he holds the future

  877. and life's worth the living.

  878. Because I know

  879. that he lives.

  880. But let me show you

  881. from the scripture

  882. how our resurrection

  883. is guaranteed by his.

  884. Paul tells us plainly

  885. in 1 Corinthians 15

  886. and verse 20.

  887. But in fact,

  888. Christ has been raised

  889. from the dead.

  890. The first fruits of those

  891. who have fallen asleep.

  892. For as by one man

  893. came death,

  894. that's Adam,

  895. by a man

  896. has come also

  897. the resurrection of the dead.

  898. For as in Adam

  899. all die,

  900. so also in Christ

  901. shall all be made alive.

  902. but each in his own order.

  903. Christ the first fruits,

  904. then at his coming

  905. those who belong to Christ,

  906. then comes the end

  907. when he delivers

  908. the kingdom

  909. to God the Father

  910. after destroying

  911. every rule

  912. and every authority

  913. and power.

  914. For he must reign

  915. until he has put

  916. all his enemies

  917. under his feet.

  918. And the last enemy

  919. to be destroyed,

  920. he says,

  921. is death.

  922. And then later

  923. in the chapter

  924. he says,

  925. death is swallowed up

  926. in victory.

  927. Death,

  928. where is your victory?

  929. Death,

  930. where is your sting?

  931. The sting of death

  932. is sin.

  933. The power of sin

  934. is the law.

  935. But thanks be to God,

  936. Paul writes,

  937. who gives us the victory

  938. through

  939. our Lord Jesus Christ.

  940. And on what basis

  941. does he provide

  942. that victory?

  943. His own resurrection

  944. from the dead.

  945. But notice,

  946. finally,

  947. Jesus' last statement

  948. to Martha.

  949. In verse 26

  950. of John 11,

  951. after he makes

  952. this promise,

  953. notice what he says.

  954. Do you believe this?

  955. Do you believe this?

  956. The faith that brings

  957. salvation

  958. and resurrection

  959. and eternal life

  960. is personal faith.

  961. Personal faith.

  962. That doesn't mean

  963. that we all get

  964. to believe

  965. what we want

  966. to believe

  967. based on our own preferences.

  968. That's not what

  969. that means.

  970. It means that we all

  971. must place

  972. personal,

  973. individual trust

  974. in Jesus'

  975. death and resurrection

  976. to receive

  977. the salvation

  978. that he offers.

  979. You must

  980. do that

  981. or you will not

  982. be saved.

  983. no one

  984. is saved

  985. on account

  986. of someone

  987. else's faith.

  988. No one

  989. is redeemed

  990. because they

  991. were in close

  992. proximity

  993. to a community

  994. of believers.

  995. So that salvation

  996. does not come

  997. through our

  998. membership in a church.

  999. It doesn't come

  1000. through our

  1001. goodness.

  1002. It doesn't come

  1003. through belonging

  1004. to a heritage

  1005. of a family

  1006. of Christians.

  1007. None of that

  1008. does anything

  1009. for you

  1010. except keeps

  1011. the gospel

  1012. in front of you

  1013. perhaps.

  1014. But you're not

  1015. saved by it.

  1016. Each person

  1017. must personally

  1018. repent of their

  1019. sins

  1020. and confess

  1021. their faith

  1022. in Jesus

  1023. as Lord

  1024. and Savior.

  1025. You must

  1026. do that

  1027. if you are

  1028. to be saved.

  1029. If you are

  1030. to have this

  1031. life.

  1032. You must

  1033. come to him

  1034. for it.

  1035. It's a glorious

  1036. promise that Jesus

  1037. makes in the text

  1038. but it must

  1039. be actively

  1040. and personally

  1041. received by faith.

  1042. And let me

  1043. just show you

  1044. how to do that

  1045. in case you're

  1046. wondering.

  1047. Flip over

  1048. just quickly

  1049. in your Bible

  1050. to Romans

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  1051. chapter 10.

  1052. It'll be

  1053. just a few

  1054. pages over

  1055. from where you

  1056. are in John 11.

  1057. Look at

  1058. Romans chapter 10

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  1059. and verse 9.

  1060. The scripture

  1061. says if you

  1062. confess

  1063. with your

  1064. mouth

  1065. that Jesus

  1066. is Lord

  1067. and believe

  1068. in your heart

  1069. that God

  1070. raised him

  1071. from the dead

  1072. you will

  1073. be saved.

  1074. For with

  1075. the heart

  1076. one believes

  1077. and is

  1078. justified

  1079. justified

  1080. by faith

  1081. not works

  1082. declared

  1083. righteous

  1084. because we

  1085. believe

  1086. genuinely

  1087. in the heart

  1088. and with

  1089. the mouth

  1090. one confesses

  1091. Christ

  1092. and is

  1093. saved.

  1094. For the

  1095. scripture says

  1096. everyone who

  1097. believes in him

  1098. will not be

  1099. put to shame.

  1100. That's a

  1101. view ahead

  1102. to a future

  1103. judgment.

  1104. You will not

  1105. be ashamed

  1106. in the judgment

  1107. if you believe

  1108. Christ.

  1109. For there's

  1110. no distinction

  1111. verse 12

  1112. between Jew

  1113. and Greek

  1114. for the same

  1115. Lord is Lord

  1116. of all

  1117. bestowing his

  1118. riches on all

  1119. who call on him.

  1120. In other words

  1121. you don't get

  1122. there a different

  1123. way based on

  1124. your culture

  1125. or your

  1126. background.

  1127. That just

  1128. because you

  1129. belong to a

  1130. different demographic

  1131. or a different

  1132. culture of a

  1133. different upbringing

  1134. that you can

  1135. get to God

  1136. a different way.

  1137. No he says

  1138. no it doesn't

  1139. matter if you're

  1140. Jew or Greek

  1141. or whatever.

  1142. He says

  1143. there's one

  1144. Lord.

  1145. It's all

  1146. through Christ

  1147. and then he

  1148. closes it off

  1149. in verse 13

  1150. and he says

  1151. for everyone

  1152. who calls

  1153. on the name

  1154. of the Lord

  1155. will be saved.

  1156. How can I

  1157. actually trust

  1158. Christ?

  1159. Believe in

  1160. your heart.

  1161. Repent of

  1162. your sin.

  1163. Confess him

  1164. as Lord

  1165. and Savior

  1166. and the

  1167. promise is

  1168. that if you

  1169. do that

  1170. you will

  1171. show that

  1172. he has

  1173. saved you.

  1174. He's redeemed

  1175. you and he's

  1176. transformed you.

  1177. It's a work

  1178. of his grace

  1179. made evident

  1180. in your

  1181. real and

  1182. personal

  1183. faith.

  1184. Let's bring

  1185. it to a

  1186. close.

  1187. Death is a

  1188. reality that

  1189. none of us

  1190. can escape.

  1191. We've got

  1192. that.

  1193. But there

  1194. is real

  1195. hope in

  1196. Jesus

  1197. Christ.

  1198. As we

  1199. say often

  1200. he lived

  1201. the life

  1202. that we

  1203. were meant

  1204. to live

  1205. and died

  1206. the death

  1207. that we

  1208. deserve to

  1209. die.

  1210. And he

  1211. did it

  1212. out of

  1213. love for

  1214. sinners

  1215. like you

  1216. and me.

  1217. He's the

  1218. resurrection

  1219. and the

  1220. life.

  1221. He's a

  1222. sure hope

  1223. for those

  1224. of you who

  1225. remain lost

  1226. in your

  1227. sin that

  1228. you're trying

  1229. to sort

  1230. all of this

  1231. out.

  1232. He is your

  1233. only hope.

  1234. hope.

  1235. And it's

  1236. a blessed

  1237. hope.

  1238. But it's

  1239. also an

  1240. incredible

  1241. joy and

  1242. encouragement

  1243. for those

  1244. of you who

  1245. have been

  1246. saved.

  1247. Maybe you're

  1248. burdened by

  1249. death or

  1250. suffering or

  1251. whatever's

  1252. around you.

  1253. Paul says

  1254. to the

  1255. Thessalonians

  1256. that we are

  1257. to take

  1258. these truths

  1259. of resurrection

  1260. and we are

  1261. to encourage

  1262. one another

  1263. with such

  1264. things.

  1265. Take courage

  1266. in this

  1267. and enjoy

  1268. whoever

  1269. trusts in

  1270. him though

  1271. he die

  1272. yet shall

  1273. he live.

  1274. Do you

  1275. believe this?

  1276. Will you

  1277. believe this?

  1278. He invites

  1279. you to

  1280. and he will

  1281. forgive you

  1282. and give you

  1283. that life

  1284. today.

  1285. take
