  1. I want to begin with a very basic gospel question.

  2. Really, two questions.

  3. One question with two parts, whatever.

  4. Here's what it is.

  5. What is sin's principal problem and salvation's principal purpose?

  6. And I just want you to think on it for just a moment.

  7. What is sin's principal problem?

  8. What is salvation's principal purpose?

  9. Of course, that is according to the scriptures.

  10. Now, we may be prepared to offer many answers to these questions,

  11. but I want you to notice what I'm asking.

  12. I'm not asking about all of sin's consequences.

  13. I'm not asking for a list of all the various things that sin does

  14. and that results from our sin and from Adam's sin.

  15. I'm not asking about all of salvation's benefits,

  16. all of the blessings that come from knowing Christ

  17. and being redeemed by Christ.

  18. That's not the question.

  19. The question is, what is the principal issue of sin?

  20. What is the principal aim of salvation?

  21. What's it really all about when you get to the very heart of it?

  22. Now, let's think of it in relation to the very first sin.

  23. If you can bring your mind back to creation and fall

  24. as recorded in Genesis 1 through 3.

  25. The principal issue of Adam's fall

  26. was not his expulsion from Eden,

  27. and it was not his expiration of life or his death.

  28. It was his exclusion from God's presence,

  29. his exclusion from a peaceful, intimate relationship with the creator.

  30. And once we understand that,

  31. that is the presentation of the scripture.

  32. That's not my opinion of what it says.

  33. That's actually the presentation of how the scriptures

  34. describe this for us and explain it to us.

  35. And once we have that understanding,

  36. then we can move on to the second part of the question,

  37. which is about the principal benefit

  38. of salvation and redemption and restoration.

  39. So let's think of it this way.

  40. If Adam's most significant consequence

  41. was his expulsion from the Garden of Eden,

  42. what would then be the chief aim of his salvation?

  43. It would be a return to the Garden.

  44. If the principal issue was that he could no longer be in Eden,

  45. then the principal aim of restoration

  46. would be to bring him back to Eden.

  47. Okay?

  48. Let's change the question.

  49. If the principal issue,

  50. the supreme consequence of Adam and Eve's sin,

  51. was death,

  52. what then would be the chief aim of their salvation?

  53. It would be life, right?

  54. Eternal life.

  55. If the principal issue of Adam's sin

  56. was conflict with others,

  57. what then would be the goal of his salvation?

  58. It would be a peaceful marriage.

  59. It would be lasting friendship.

  60. It would be enduring partnership.

  61. Now, don't misunderstand what I'm saying.

  62. Remember, I'm not asking about all the consequences of sin.

  63. All of those things are real consequences of sin.

  64. Neither am I asking about all of the benefits of salvation.

  65. All of those things are actually benefits of salvation

  66. according to the Scriptures.

  67. They're benefits that we should rejoice in,

  68. but they aren't the principal purpose of salvation.

  69. Since the principal problem of Adam's sin

  70. was his separation from God,

  71. the principal aim of his salvation

  72. is reconciliation with God.

  73. Okay?

  74. You follow?

  75. Now, I think the vast majority of people,

  76. even many professing Christians,

  77. do not understand this.

  78. In our sinful condition,

  79. we focus on every consequence of sin

  80. except the principal one.

  81. We spend our lives trying to achieve

  82. the pleasures of Eden.

  83. We think of what would life be

  84. if we weren't in a fallen world?

  85. And we live our lives trying to restore

  86. that fallenness in some way,

  87. or at least the experience of it.

  88. We want the pleasure,

  89. as much of it as we can possibly get.

  90. Or we spend our lives chasing more life,

  91. trying to extend life in some way.

  92. But we desire all of those things

  93. apart from the presence of God, typically.

  94. It's an earthly mindset.

  95. It's a carnal perspective, unfortunately,

  96. that has influenced the church

  97. and its presentations of the gospel message.

  98. So some professing Christians,

  99. they speak as if the goal of salvation

  100. is heaven

  101. and the pleasures that are contained therein.

  102. To think of heaven primarily as a place of worship

  103. seems to them a disappointment.

  104. We can go to passages like Revelation 4.

  105. We see the great throne room of God

  106. where all of God's people are gathered around

  107. with all of His creatures

  108. and all of His angels,

  109. and they cast their crowns at His feet.

  110. They cry out to Him,

  111. holy, holy, holy.

  112. And we think, wow, that's amazing.

  113. I hope there's more.

  114. Why do we do this?

  115. Why does thoughts of heaven

  116. as primarily a place of worship

  117. seem a disappointment?

  118. Because our thoughts of salvation

  119. are fixated on escaping difficulty

  120. and experiencing pleasurable ease instead.

  121. Little consideration seems to be given

  122. to enjoying God

  123. who actually is the one

  124. who makes heaven desirable.

  125. And we seem to miss that.

  126. And my concern

  127. is that many people

  128. would be perfectly content with a heaven

  129. where God is not actually present.

  130. If everything that we know

  131. from the scriptures

  132. about the nature of heaven,

  133. if we were to go to Revelation in particular

  134. and we were to grasp

  135. the fullness of John's vision,

  136. if we were able to see

  137. what John saw,

  138. the streets of gold,

  139. the gates of pearl,

  140. the walls of jasper,

  141. the sea like crystal,

  142. all of the things

  143. that we long for,

  144. all of the things

  145. that will be blessing

  146. in eternity,

  147. if we could see all of it

  148. and if we could have all of it

  149. without God,

  150. would we be content with that?

  151. And I think the answer

  152. for many people

  153. is

  154. yeah,

  155. that's actually what we're after.

  156. We're after the pleasure.

  157. We're after the ease.

  158. We're after the escape

  159. from difficulty.

  160. And if God chooses

  161. not to be there,

  162. that's fine

  163. as long as he provides

  164. the ease.

  165. You see the problem.

  166. Of course,

  167. this also affects

  168. our presentations

  169. of the gospel.

  170. We present

  171. a truncated

  172. form of the good news

  173. that has as its climax

  174. escape from torment

  175. and entrance

  176. into paradise.

  177. God's role

  178. in those presentations

  179. is essentially

  180. to act

  181. as a means

  182. to a more

  183. fantastic end,

  184. which is

  185. personal pleasure.

  186. We present the gospel

  187. to people that,

  188. hey,

  189. there's no hope here.

  190. Things will be much better

  191. in heaven

  192. and God's made a way.

  193. So if you really just want

  194. things to be better,

  195. God will make a way

  196. for you

  197. and you can enjoy

  198. better things.

  199. Friends,

  200. that's not the gospel.

  201. You can lead somebody

  202. in a wonderful prayer

  203. about Jesus,

  204. but if their hope

  205. is simply

  206. pleasure

  207. that may or may not

  208. be a part of heaven

  209. and in their mind

  210. is nothing

  211. with consideration

  212. to the glory of God

  213. and the reconciliation

  214. with God

  215. and the enjoyment of God,

  216. you have not presented

  217. the gospel

  218. and they are not Christians.

  219. Christ's sacrifice

  220. on the cross

  221. is emphasized

  222. as a means

  223. to a better life

  224. and a future

  225. rather than God's plan

  226. for restoring fellowship

  227. to his creatures.

  228. This kind of gospel message,

  229. it would be like

  230. going to your wife

  231. and saying,

  232. you know,

  233. the chief aim

  234. of our marriage

  235. is sexual fulfillment.

  236. You're great,

  237. I'm glad you're around,

  238. but what I really love

  239. is the pleasure

  240. that I get from you.

  241. And we would say

  242. that's a pretty terrible

  243. view of marriage,

  244. isn't it?

  245. Our wives would not

  246. be very pleased with us

  247. if that were our view

  248. of marriage

  249. and yet it's basically

  250. the perspective

  251. that many people

  252. bring to the gospel.

  253. I'm glad God's there.

  254. I'm happy

  255. that Jesus

  256. was willing

  257. to do so much

  258. in order to secure

  259. my pleasure,

  260. but the thing

  261. that I really want,

  262. I just want heaven,

  263. I want ease,

  264. I want the pleasure.

  265. Again,

  266. don't misunderstand me.

  267. I'm not saying

  268. that those things

  269. aren't realities

  270. or that we shouldn't

  271. crave those things.

  272. They are blessings

  273. from God.

  274. He gives them to us

  275. as a description

  276. in His Word

  277. in order that He might

  278. give us a foretaste

  279. of what eternity

  280. will be for those

  281. who are in Him,

  282. but it's not

  283. the principal aim.

  284. And what many

  285. have failed to realize

  286. is that heaven and hell

  287. are secondary consequences

  288. of one standing

  289. with God.

  290. He is the goal

  291. of salvation,

  292. not the means

  293. to something else.

  294. And to rightly speak,

  295. of the realities

  296. of heaven and hell,

  297. we must put them

  298. in their proper place.

  299. Salvation is not primarily

  300. about entering heaven.

  301. It is about being reconciled

  302. in a peaceful,

  303. intimate relationship

  304. with the Creator

  305. in whom

  306. is the greatest

  307. possible experience

  308. of pleasure

  309. and love

  310. and joy

  311. if we are to believe

  312. that what the Bible

  313. says is true.

  314. And of course,

  315. I do believe it.

  316. And the story

  317. of the Bible,

  318. it's all about

  319. God's pursuit

  320. of this peace

  321. with His creatures.

  322. And the ministry

  323. of the gospel

  324. is one of

  325. reconciling sinners

  326. to God

  327. through the perfect work

  328. of Jesus Christ.

  329. Paul says this

  330. plainly for us.

  331. 2 Corinthians chapter 5.

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  332. All this is from God.

  333. Speaking of salvation.

  334. Who through Christ

  335. reconciled us

  336. to Himself.

  337. And then He gave us,

  338. that is the apostles

  339. and beyond that,

  340. everyday Christians.

  341. He gave to us

  342. the ministry

  343. of reconciliation.

  344. And what does He mean?

  345. Well, He tells us

  346. that is,

  347. in Christ,

  348. God was reconciling

  349. the world

  350. to Himself.

  351. Not counting

  352. their trespasses

  353. against them

  354. and entrusting

  355. to us,

  356. believers,

  357. this message

  358. of reconciliation.

  359. Therefore,

  360. Paul turns

  361. to his audience

  362. and he says,

  363. we are ambassadors

  364. for Christ.

  365. We're proclaimers

  366. of good news.

  367. Therefore,

  368. God is making

  369. His appeal

  370. to you

  371. through us.

  372. And what's the appeal?

  373. He tells us

  374. in the very next statement.

  375. We implore you,

  376. for Christ's sake,

  377. be reconciled

  378. to God.

  379. Can I tell you

  380. what my purpose is

  381. right now,

  382. in this moment,

  383. is to be an ambassador

  384. for Christ,

  385. to proclaim

  386. the good news,

  387. God making

  388. His appeal

  389. to you

  390. through me.

  391. And therefore,

  392. my appeal,

  393. I implore you,

  394. be reconciled

  395. to God.

  396. Be reconciled

  397. to God.

  398. You say,

  399. well,

  400. why does this

  401. have to do

  402. with Psalm 15?

  403. I'm saying all

  404. of this

  405. because it would

  406. be quite easy

  407. for us to make

  408. Psalm 15

  409. about how a person

  410. can get to heaven.

  411. In fact,

  412. early in the week

  413. in my study,

  414. I was tempted

  415. to actually make

  416. that the title

  417. of the sermon,

  418. How to Get to Heaven.

  419. And it was through

  420. the conviction

  421. of that

  422. that I realized,

  423. no,

  424. that's actually

  425. the problem

  426. many times

  427. is all

  428. we're really

  429. concerned about

  430. is heaven,

  431. but that's not

  432. what David's

  433. concerned about here.

  434. Heaven's a wonderful

  435. implication of this text,

  436. don't get me wrong,

  437. but it's not

  438. what David had in mind

  439. when he was writing

  440. this psalm.

  441. The point

  442. of Psalm 15

  443. is to paint

  444. a portrait

  445. of the one

  446. who can dwell

  447. with God,

  448. the one

  449. who has

  450. this peaceful,

  451. intimate

  452. fellowship

  453. with the creator.

  454. The character sketch,

  455. it includes a question,

  456. it includes the answer,

  457. and then it includes

  458. a blessing,

  459. and we're going to work

  460. through all three

  461. of those things,

  462. but as we work

  463. through these sections,

  464. you're going to

  465. quickly pick up

  466. on a serious problem

  467. in black for us.

  468. So at the end,

  469. after we have worked

  470. through the psalm,

  471. we will look

  472. to Jesus

  473. as the fulfillment

  474. of the psalm

  475. and the agent

  476. of our reconciliation

  477. to God.

  478. Okay?

  479. First, let's see

  480. the question.

  481. Look again at verse 1.

  482. Here's what David asked.

  483. O Lord,

  484. who shall sojourn

  485. in your tent?

  486. Who shall dwell

  487. on your holy hill?

  488. The question David

  489. presents here,

  490. it's all about

  491. who can dwell

  492. in the presence

  493. of the Lord.

  494. In David's context,

  495. a tent was a place

  496. where someone lived.

  497. It was their abode,

  498. their place of dwelling.

  499. The tent of God,

  500. however,

  501. in the Old Testament

  502. has special meaning.

  503. It speaks of

  504. a particular place.

  505. It speaks of,

  506. the tabernacle

  507. in David's time

  508. where the presence

  509. of God

  510. was manifested

  511. among his chosen people.

  512. And this is

  513. an important connection

  514. in the scriptures.

  515. God has always desired

  516. to dwell with mankind

  517. and for that relationship

  518. to be peaceful

  519. and intimate

  520. as we've said

  521. a number of times already.

  522. That was the reality

  523. of Adam and Eve's existence

  524. before they fell.

  525. There seemed no surprise

  526. to them

  527. that God was willing

  528. after their sin

  529. to come in the cool

  530. of the day

  531. to walk with them

  532. in the garden.

  533. And we don't know

  534. if that was a daily event

  535. or if it was

  536. multiple times a day.

  537. We don't know

  538. the nature of it.

  539. We just know

  540. it was no surprise

  541. to them so much

  542. so that they hid themselves

  543. knowing that God

  544. was coming.

  545. There was fellowship,

  546. intimacy,

  547. relationship

  548. between God

  549. and his creatures.

  550. God desired that.

  551. He received glory

  552. and pleasure

  553. through that.

  554. Of course,

  555. that was until

  556. their fall.

  557. And the Bible's

  558. overarching message

  559. is about God's plan

  560. to restore that.

  561. And we see it

  562. progressively unfolding.

  563. We see these

  564. snapshots of it.

  565. First we see

  566. the tabernacle.

  567. God uses Moses,

  568. the people of Israel

  569. in the wilderness

  570. to build it.

  571. What was that all about?

  572. It was about

  573. God's presence

  574. being manifested

  575. among his people.

  576. Then it was

  577. the temple.

  578. We read

  579. in 1 Chronicles 16

  580. to open the service.

  581. What was that

  582. psalm?

  583. What was that

  584. a prayer for?

  585. Was that the dedication

  586. of the temple,

  587. Solomon's temple?

  588. What was happening

  589. in that moment?

  590. The presence of God

  591. filled the temple.

  592. It was a manifestation

  593. of God's presence

  594. among his people.

  595. And then we see it next

  596. in the incarnation.

  597. John tells us

  598. that God

  599. tabernacled

  600. with us.

  601. He tempted

  602. with us

  603. to use

  604. David's language.

  605. How?

  606. In the incarnation

  607. of Jesus Christ.

  608. And then Jesus

  609. ascended back to heaven

  610. and then

  611. what happened?

  612. God the Father

  613. and God the Son

  614. send the Holy Spirit

  615. eternally proceeding

  616. from the Father

  617. and the Son.

  618. And what does he do?

  619. He dwells

  620. within

  621. each believer.

  622. And what happens

  623. in the end?

  624. Jesus returns.

  625. Why?

  626. So that he might

  627. take us

  628. to be with him

  629. and to dwell

  630. with him.

  631. This is the Bible.

  632. This is the

  633. big picture

  634. of the Bible.

  635. This is what's happening.

  636. That's what David

  637. is referring to here.

  638. Who can be

  639. in your presence

  640. in this way God?

  641. Who can dwell

  642. in your tent?

  643. Who can actually

  644. come into the tabernacle?

  645. If he had

  646. the universal

  647. tabernacle in mind

  648. of all of God's creation.

  649. Who can be

  650. in your presence God?

  651. That's the question

  652. he's asking.

  653. The emphasis here

  654. is not on a place.

  655. It's on the presence

  656. of God itself.

  657. But then he uses

  658. another statement.

  659. He speaks of

  660. God's holy hill.

  661. That's the second

  662. question isn't it?

  663. Who shall dwell

  664. on your holy hill?

  665. Well we've seen

  666. this term before.

  667. In Psalm 2

  668. in verse 6

  669. Zion is the

  670. holy hill

  671. from which

  672. God rules over

  673. all of his creation.

  674. Issuing his

  675. judgment against

  676. the wicked.

  677. Blessing all

  678. who trust

  679. in his appointed

  680. king.

  681. And again

  682. the emphasis

  683. is on access

  684. to God's presence

  685. to his safety

  686. to sweet

  687. fellowship with him.

  688. David understood

  689. that the deepest

  690. longings

  691. of the human

  692. heart

  693. love

  694. safety

  695. joy

  696. all of these

  697. things can only

  698. be satisfied

  699. in God

  700. which is a statement

  701. he'll make explicitly

  702. in the very next

  703. Psalm.

  704. Psalm 16

  705. in verse 11

  706. you make known

  707. to me the path

  708. of life he says

  709. in your presence

  710. there is fullness

  711. of joy

  712. David says.

  713. At your right

  714. hand

  715. there are

  716. pleasures

  717. forevermore

  718. eternal pleasures

  719. beyond our

  720. imagination

  721. all of it

  722. in connection

  723. with God's

  724. presence.

  725. These opening

  726. questions

  727. they reflect

  728. the deepest

  729. longing of

  730. David's heart

  731. and the hearts

  732. of all who

  733. will seek God

  734. to dwell in

  735. his presence

  736. where there is

  737. eternal security

  738. and blessing

  739. that's

  740. that's his

  741. desire here

  742. but David's

  743. also fully

  744. aware

  745. that sinners

  746. cannot dwell

  747. with God.

  748. We've seen him

  749. talk about this

  750. already.

  751. Psalm 5

    Psalms 5:4

  752. verse 4

  753. you are not

  754. a God

  755. who delights

  756. in wickedness

  757. evil

  758. those who

  759. commit it

  760. may not

  761. dwell with you.

  762. So who then

  763. can gain access

  764. to God's presence

  765. and dwell

  766. in his safety

  767. and love?

  768. Well that's

  769. what the

  770. psalm

  771. seeks to

  772. answer

  773. which brings

  774. us to

  775. the answer.

  776. We've seen

  777. the question

  778. now let's

  779. see the

  780. answer.

  781. And what

  782. follows in

  783. these verses

  784. verses 2

  785. through 5

  786. it's a

  787. character sketch.

  788. It's a

  789. portrait of

  790. the person

  791. who has

  792. access to

  793. God

  794. who enjoys

  795. perfect

  796. fellowship

  797. with the

  798. creator.

  799. And here's

  800. how I'd

  801. like to

  802. break it

  803. up.

  804. I want

  805. to break

  806. it up

  807. by every

  808. two

  809. lines

  810. that we've

  811. talked

  812. before about

  813. chiasms

  814. a literary

  815. structure

  816. that is

  817. common

  818. in the

  819. psalms.

  820. There's

  821. no chiasm

  822. here.

  823. What we

  824. have here

  825. is parallelism.

  826. You don't

  827. have to

  828. know that

  829. word.

  830. You know

  831. it from

  832. your poetry

  833. classes in

  834. high school.

  835. It's a

  836. rhythm.

  837. It's a

  838. prose

  839. and to

  840. poetry.

  841. Right?

  842. And as

  843. we work

  844. through this

  845. every two

  846. lines you

  847. find a

  848. parallelism.

  849. But here's

  850. the point.

  851. No matter

  852. how you

  853. break this

  854. apart,

  855. as many

  856. or as few

  857. characteristics

  858. as maybe

  859. you decide

  860. to do,

  861. the primary

  862. point here

  863. that I want

  864. you to

  865. see is

  866. that moral

  867. perfection

  868. is what

  869. qualifies a

  870. person for

  871. God's

  872. presence.

  873. Moral

  874. perfection.

  875. Okay?

  876. Let's work

  877. through it.

  878. Look first

  879. at verse

  880. two.

  881. Who can

  882. do this?

  883. He who

  884. walks

  885. blamelessly

  886. and does

  887. what is

  888. right.

  889. He who

  890. walks

  891. blamelessly

  892. and does

  893. what is

  894. right.

  895. This first

  896. set of

  897. characteristics,

  898. it's a

  899. summary

  900. heading for

  901. everything

  902. else that

  903. follows.

  904. When the

  905. scriptures,

  906. as you

  907. probably are

  908. aware,

  909. when they

  910. speak of

  911. walking,

  912. it's a

  913. reference to

  914. a person's

  915. way of

  916. life.

  917. David

  918. asserts

  919. here that

  920. one who

  921. can dwell

  922. in peace

  923. with God

  924. must have

  925. a totally

  926. blameless

  927. way of

  928. life.

  929. That is,

  930. his inner

  931. integrity

  932. always reveals

  933. itself in

  934. outward

  935. righteousness.

  936. He's without

  937. blame in

  938. both his

  939. inner spirit

  940. and his

  941. outward

  942. actions.

  943. Always

  944. doing

  945. what's

  946. right.

  947. Now,

  948. you may

  949. look at

  950. that

  951. and say,

  952. you know,

  953. I've got

  954. a piece

  955. of that

  956. together.

  957. I pretty

  958. much always

  959. do what's

  960. right on

  961. the outside,

  962. but you

  963. know your

  964. heart.

  965. You know

  966. it's not

  967. true on

  968. the inside.

  969. That's not

  970. the case

  971. for this

  972. man.

  973. What's

  974. the next

  975. one?

  976. Again,

  977. verse

  978. two.

  979. He speaks

  980. truth in

  981. his heart

  982. who does

  983. not slander

  984. with his

  985. tongue.

  986. You feel

  987. the rhythm

  988. of that,

  989. right?

  990. And speaks

  991. the truth

  992. in his

  993. heart,

  994. does not

  995. slander

  996. with his

  997. tongue.

  998. Again,

  999. the pair

  1000. begins with

  1001. the inner

  1002. person,

  1003. ends with

  1004. outward

  1005. behavior that

  1006. reflects the

  1007. nature of

  1008. his heart.

  1009. We know

  1010. this is how

  1011. life works.

  1012. Out of the

  1013. abundance of

  1014. the heart,

  1015. the mouth

  1016. speaks,

  1017. Jesus says.

  1018. The Proverbs

  1019. tell us that

  1020. you ought not

  1021. follow your

  1022. heart because

  1023. it will end

  1024. in destruction.

  1025. It's deceitfully

  1026. wicked.

  1027. Who can

  1028. know it?

  1029. We're

  1030. told.

  1031. Well,

  1032. this person,

  1033. his outward

  1034. behavior is

  1035. always a

  1036. reflection of

  1037. his heart

  1038. and it's

  1039. always good.

  1040. In his

  1041. heart,

  1042. this individual

  1043. is completely

  1044. trustworthy,

  1045. reliable,

  1046. a lover of

  1047. truth.

  1048. He's the

  1049. opposite of

  1050. the foolish

  1051. one who

  1052. Solomon said

  1053. gives an

  1054. answer before

  1055. he hears.

  1056. truth.

  1057. It's

  1058. Proverbs

  1059. 18,

  1060. 13.

  1061. Instead,

  1062. he loves

  1063. truth.

  1064. He seeks

  1065. the truth.

  1066. He always

  1067. acts according

  1068. to what is

  1069. true.

  1070. Says Spurgeon,

  1071. such will not

  1072. lie even in

  1073. the closet of

  1074. their hearts

  1075. for God is

  1076. there to

  1077. listen.

  1078. They scorn

  1079. double meanings,

  1080. evasions,

  1081. equivocations,

  1082. white lies,

  1083. flatteries,

  1084. and deceptions.

  1085. And the

  1086. truthful nature

  1087. of this

  1088. person's heart

  1089. means that

  1090. he's never

  1091. guilty of

  1092. slander.

  1093. That's the

  1094. second part

  1095. of the

  1096. parallels,

  1097. isn't it?

  1098. It calls out

  1099. slander.

  1100. But what is

  1101. slander?

  1102. It is to

  1103. deceptively

  1104. damage another

  1105. person's

  1106. reputation by

  1107. misrepresenting

  1108. them to

  1109. someone else.

  1110. We learn to

  1111. do this from

  1112. our youngest

  1113. age.

  1114. When we

  1115. very quickly

  1116. run to our

  1117. parents to

  1118. tell on our

  1119. brother or

  1120. our sister,

  1121. misrepresenting

  1122. an entire

  1123. situation in

  1124. hopes that

  1125. we will be

  1126. seen as a

  1127. victim and

  1128. they will be

  1129. seen as an

  1130. abuser.

  1131. And a wise

  1132. parent, as they

  1133. inquire into

  1134. the actual

  1135. event, find that

  1136. perhaps it's

  1137. actually quite

  1138. the opposite.

  1139. He doesn't

  1140. go about

  1141. looking for

  1142. ways that he

  1143. might accuse

  1144. someone.

  1145. He doesn't

  1146. spin a story

  1147. to exalt

  1148. himself by

  1149. tearing someone

  1150. else down.

  1151. Next,

  1152. verse 3,

  1153. he does

  1154. no evil

  1155. to his

  1156. neighbor,

  1157. nor takes

  1158. up a

  1159. reproach

  1160. against

  1161. his

  1162. friend.

  1163. Does no

  1164. evil to

  1165. his

  1166. neighbor,

  1167. takes up

  1168. no reproach

  1169. against

  1170. his

  1171. friend.

  1172. Now,

  1173. this pair

  1174. of traits,

  1175. it focuses

  1176. on how

  1177. one treats

  1178. the other

  1179. people in

  1180. his life,

  1181. whether they

  1182. are just

  1183. merely

  1184. acquaintances

  1185. or friends

  1186. to whom

  1187. some level

  1188. of loyalty

  1189. is expected.

  1190. To perform

  1191. evil would

  1192. be anything

  1193. that falls

  1194. short of

  1195. Jesus'

  1196. command,

  1197. to love

  1198. your

  1199. neighbor

  1200. as

  1201. yourself.

  1202. It's

  1203. Matthew

  1204. 22,

  1205. 37-40.

  1206. When

  1207. someone

  1208. asked

  1209. Jesus

  1210. to

  1211. then

  1212. define

  1213. who

  1214. is

  1215. my

  1216. neighbor

  1217. then,

  1218. that's

  1219. when he

  1220. told the

  1221. parable

  1222. of the

  1223. good

  1224. Samaritan.

  1225. And what

  1226. was the

  1227. meaning

  1228. there?

  1229. That our

  1230. neighbor,

  1231. to whom

  1232. we should

  1233. extend

  1234. loving

  1235. compassion,

  1236. is those

  1237. who would

  1238. even

  1239. otherwise be

  1240. considered

  1241. an enemy.

  1242. That's the

  1243. man of

  1244. Psalm 15.

  1245. Christopher

  1246. Ash said

  1247. that reproach

  1248. here is a

  1249. strong word

  1250. in the text.

  1251. It means a

  1252. personal attack,

  1253. a cutting

  1254. criticism,

  1255. something that

  1256. destroys a

  1257. person's good

  1258. name, which

  1259. the Bible says

  1260. is of great

  1261. value.

  1262. To take up a

  1263. reproach goes

  1264. further than

  1265. simply uttering

  1266. criticism.

  1267. It carries

  1268. the sense

  1269. of latching

  1270. on to

  1271. something you've

  1272. heard from

  1273. others,

  1274. giving currency

  1275. to it,

  1276. and then

  1277. passing it

  1278. on to

  1279. other people.

  1280. We call it

  1281. gossip usually.

  1282. In the

  1283. context of

  1284. this verse,

  1285. in Psalm 15,

  1286. this kind of

  1287. action, it

  1288. isn't taken

  1289. against just

  1290. anyone.

  1291. It's taken

  1292. against someone

  1293. who is known

  1294. to be a

  1295. friend and a

  1296. companion.

  1297. David says,

  1298. one who can

  1299. come into

  1300. God's presence

  1301. and enjoy

  1302. fellowship with

  1303. the Lord is

  1304. blameless regarding

  1305. these things,

  1306. not guilty of

  1307. it.

  1308. Verse 4,

  1309. in whose eyes

  1310. a vile person

  1311. is despised,

  1312. but who honors

  1313. those who fear

  1314. the Lord.

  1315. Meditate on

  1316. that.

  1317. In whose eyes

  1318. a vile person

  1319. is despised,

  1320. but who honors

  1321. those who fear

  1322. the Lord.

  1323. Who does a

  1324. person tend

  1325. to esteem

  1326. and honor?

  1327. And what kind

  1328. of person

  1329. does he tend

  1330. to despise

  1331. and disapprove

  1332. of?

  1333. If you'll allow

  1334. me a moment

  1335. to meddle.

  1336. There is a

  1337. cancerous

  1338. trend

  1339. among

  1340. evangelicals,

  1341. and we're

  1342. being called

  1343. out on it

  1344. by the world.

  1345. they see

  1346. the inconsistency

  1347. here.

  1348. Christians

  1349. actively

  1350. esteeming

  1351. a vile

  1352. political

  1353. figure,

  1354. musician,

  1355. athlete,

  1356. so on.

  1357. And at the

  1358. same time

  1359. aggressively

  1360. condemning

  1361. the faithful

  1362. pastor down

  1363. the street

  1364. with whom

  1365. they have

  1366. only secondary

  1367. disagreements.

  1368. Jesus tells

  1369. us that

  1370. the world

  1371. will know

  1372. that we

  1373. are his

  1374. out of our

  1375. love for

  1376. one another.

  1377. Of course,

  1378. there's command

  1379. there for

  1380. loving everyone.

  1381. The emphasis

  1382. and the impact

  1383. of the statement

  1384. is for those

  1385. who are in

  1386. the faith.

  1387. And yet,

  1388. many times in

  1389. our lives,

  1390. it is those

  1391. who are in

  1392. the faith

  1393. whom we are

  1394. most hateful

  1395. towards.

  1396. those who

  1397. are characterized

  1398. by the

  1399. vileness

  1400. of the

  1401. world

  1402. and its

  1403. philosophies

  1404. and its

  1405. systems

  1406. who we

  1407. tend to

  1408. defend

  1409. and give

  1410. approval.

  1411. But to

  1412. walk in

  1413. the footsteps

  1414. of the

  1415. blessed

  1416. man of

  1417. Psalm 1

  1418. means that

  1419. one will

  1420. not esteem

  1421. the counsel

  1422. of the

  1423. wicked

  1424. or the

  1425. way of

  1426. sinners

  1427. or the

  1428. seat of

  1429. scoffers.

  1430. The portrait

  1431. of Psalm 15

  1432. is one who

  1433. has never

  1434. found guilty

  1435. of doing

  1436. what Paul

  1437. condemns in

  1438. Romans 1

  1439. which is

  1440. when he

  1441. says in

  1442. verse 32

  1443. though they

  1444. know God's

  1445. righteous decree

  1446. that those

  1447. who practice

  1448. such things

  1449. deserve to

  1450. die,

  1451. they not

  1452. only do

  1453. them,

  1454. they give

  1455. approval to

  1456. those who

  1457. practice

  1458. them.

  1459. Finding

  1460. some kind

  1461. of justification

  1462. for it,

  1463. esteeming

  1464. what's vile,

  1465. condemning

  1466. those who

  1467. actually fear

  1468. the Lord,

  1469. imperfectly

  1470. maybe.

  1471. But fear

  1472. the Lord.

  1473. Again,

  1474. Christopher

  1475. Ash says

  1476. the one

  1477. here described

  1478. thinks little

  1479. of a vile

  1480. person because

  1481. he knows

  1482. that such

  1483. a one

  1484. is abhorred

  1485. by God.

  1486. That is in

  1487. the sense

  1488. of judgment.

  1489. This will

  1490. not stop

  1491. him loving

  1492. him,

  1493. showing

  1494. kindness

  1495. and compassion

  1496. to him,

  1497. but it

  1498. will prevent

  1499. him looking

  1500. up to the

  1501. vile person

  1502. as an

  1503. example to

  1504. be emulated.

  1505. On the

  1506. contrary,

  1507. he honors

  1508. those who

  1509. fear the

  1510. Lord,

  1511. no matter

  1512. how unimpressive

  1513. they may

  1514. be in the

  1515. eyes of

  1516. the world.

  1517. Again,

  1518. verse 4,

  1519. who swears

  1520. to his

  1521. own hurt

  1522. and does

  1523. not change.

  1524. Simply,

  1525. if he's

  1526. made a

  1527. promise and

  1528. later discovers

  1529. that the

  1530. promise is

  1531. not working

  1532. to his

  1533. advantage,

  1534. he perseveres

  1535. in the

  1536. promise

  1537. anyways.

  1538. He doesn't

  1539. go back

  1540. on his

  1541. word even

  1542. when it is

  1543. to his

  1544. harm.

  1545. Harper

  1546. and I had

  1547. a discussion

  1548. about Psalm

  1549. 15 this

  1550. week.

  1551. I often

  1552. practice on

  1553. my family

  1554. before I

  1555. preach.

  1556. We were

  1557. sitting at

  1558. the table

  1559. and I

  1560. said,

  1561. Harper,

  1562. have you

  1563. ever made

  1564. a promise

  1565. and you

  1566. went back

  1567. on it

  1568. because you

  1569. realized that

  1570. that promise

  1571. hurt you

  1572. instead of

  1573. helped you?

  1574. I've done

  1575. that before.

  1576. Ashlyn and

  1577. I had a

  1578. similar

  1579. conversation

  1580. in Belk

  1581. yesterday.

  1582. Ashlyn,

  1583. have you

  1584. ever led

  1585. somebody

  1586. along,

  1587. made them

  1588. think one

  1589. thing,

  1590. and then

  1591. when you

  1592. realized that

  1593. it wasn't

  1594. the best

  1595. thing,

  1596. you kind

  1597. of pulled

  1598. back and

  1599. it was

  1600. damaging to

  1601. them?

  1602. She said,

  1603. yeah.

  1604. You know

  1605. what,

  1606. Ashlyn,

  1607. I've done

  1608. it.

  1609. I've done

  1610. it.

  1611. Done it

  1612. many times.

  1613. The one

  1614. who can

  1615. come into

  1616. God's

  1617. presence

  1618. has never

  1619. done that.

  1620. His

  1621. yea is

  1622. always

  1623. yea,

  1624. his nay

  1625. is always

  1626. nay,

  1627. according

  1628. to Jesus.

  1629. Verse

  1630. five,

  1631. who does

  1632. not put

  1633. out his

  1634. money at

  1635. interest,

  1636. does not

  1637. take a

  1638. bribe

  1639. against the

  1640. innocent.

  1641. God

  1642. is

  1643. central

  1644. focus

  1645. here

  1646. is

  1647. it's

  1648. a

  1649. trait

  1650. of

  1651. greed

  1652. and

  1653. covetousness,

  1654. taking

  1655. advantage of

  1656. others'

  1657. personal gain

  1658. without any

  1659. regard for

  1660. their well-being.

  1661. the Bible

  1662. routinely

  1663. condemns

  1664. using

  1665. financial

  1666. power

  1667. to

  1668. manipulate

  1669. and

  1670. abuse

  1671. others,

  1672. especially

  1673. the poor.

  1674. It

  1675. doesn't

  1676. condemn

  1677. interest

  1678. entirely.

  1679. We need

  1680. not get

  1681. the wrong

  1682. picture

  1683. here.

  1684. There

  1685. are

  1686. times

  1687. where

  1688. the

  1689. Bible

  1690. actually

  1691. recommends

  1692. for good

  1693. stewardship

  1694. that you

  1695. would have

  1696. good

  1697. business

  1698. practices,

  1699. but it

  1700. does

  1701. condemn

  1702. this

  1703. fiscal

  1704. manipulation

  1705. that

  1706. takes

  1707. advantage

  1708. of other

  1709. people's

  1710. misfortune

  1711. and

  1712. vulnerability.

  1713. We're all

  1714. prone to

  1715. doing this.

  1716. It's in

  1717. our nature.

  1718. The one

  1719. who can

  1720. dwell with

  1721. God is

  1722. blameless

  1723. in his

  1724. dealings

  1725. with

  1726. people.

  1727. He

  1728. doesn't

  1729. manipulate

  1730. or abuse

  1731. others

  1732. for his

  1733. own

  1734. advantage.

  1735. So we

  1736. have the

  1737. question.

  1738. The question

  1739. is,

  1740. Lord,

  1741. who can

  1742. enjoy

  1743. access

  1744. to your

  1745. presence?

  1746. Who

  1747. can have

  1748. the

  1749. safety

  1750. of

  1751. dwelling

  1752. on your

  1753. holy

  1754. hill?

  1755. Who

  1756. can

  1757. enjoy

  1758. you,

  1759. have the

  1760. blessings

  1761. that come

  1762. from knowing

  1763. you,

  1764. being

  1765. with

  1766. you?

  1767. And the

  1768. answer is

  1769. this

  1770. sketch.

  1771. And then it

  1772. finishes with

  1773. a blessing,

  1774. an amazing

  1775. blessing.

  1776. Actually,

  1777. look again

  1778. at verse

  1779. five.

  1780. He who

  1781. does

  1782. these

  1783. things

  1784. shall

  1785. never

  1786. be

  1787. moved.

  1788. That's

  1789. amazing.

  1790. It's a

  1791. wonderful

  1792. promise,

  1793. actually,

  1794. isn't it?

  1795. Whoever

  1796. meets the

  1797. conditions

  1798. of this

  1799. portrait

  1800. will not

  1801. only be

  1802. welcomed

  1803. into

  1804. God's

  1805. presence,

  1806. but will

  1807. be eternally

  1808. secured

  1809. in God's

  1810. presence.

  1811. wonderful.

  1812. To be

  1813. moved is

  1814. to have

  1815. stability

  1816. taken from

  1817. your life

  1818. so that

  1819. all the

  1820. promises

  1821. of the

  1822. text

  1823. are stripped

  1824. away from

  1825. you.

  1826. And

  1827. essentially

  1828. what David

  1829. is saying

  1830. is if

  1831. you meet

  1832. the conditions

  1833. of the

  1834. portrait

  1835. and if

  1836. God brings

  1837. you to

  1838. his holy

  1839. hill and

  1840. you dwell

  1841. with him,

  1842. he will

  1843. not remove

  1844. that blessing

  1845. from you.

  1846. You will

  1847. not be

  1848. moved,

  1849. he says.

  1850. Wonderful.

  1851. That

  1852. absolute

  1853. eternal

  1854. assurance

  1855. is precisely

  1856. what God

  1857. offers here.

  1858. At least

  1859. for all

  1860. who qualify

  1861. according to

  1862. the description

  1863. that David

  1864. gives.

  1865. Which

  1866. brings us

  1867. to the

  1868. final

  1869. application

  1870. of the

  1871. text.

  1872. Psalm 15,

  1873. it really

  1874. is an

  1875. incredible

  1876. song of

  1877. worship.

  1878. it presents

  1879. the very

  1880. real possibility

  1881. of enjoying

  1882. God in

  1883. the safety

  1884. of his

  1885. presence.

  1886. It echoes

  1887. God's promise

  1888. that all

  1889. who find

  1890. refuge in

  1891. him will

  1892. never be

  1893. moved from

  1894. it.

  1895. Not only

  1896. can this

  1897. be a

  1898. reality for

  1899. us,

  1900. according to

  1901. the psalm,

  1902. it's an

  1903. eternal

  1904. reality,

  1905. not a

  1906. temporary

  1907. one.

  1908. This is

  1909. a glorious

  1910. psalm.

  1911. But surely

  1912. you see

  1913. the tension

  1914. here.

  1915. surely

  1916. you feel

  1917. the tension

  1918. of the

  1919. text.

  1920. Though

  1921. it contains

  1922. these

  1923. unbelievable

  1924. promises,

  1925. the

  1926. qualifications

  1927. for dwelling

  1928. on God's

  1929. holy hill

  1930. are impossible

  1931. for us

  1932. to meet.

  1933. So we

  1934. need to

  1935. conclude

  1936. with four

  1937. critical

  1938. questions.

  1939. Question

  1940. one,

  1941. who of

  1942. us has

  1943. met these

  1944. conditions?

  1945. Who of

  1946. us has

  1947. met the

  1948. conditions?

  1949. clearly

  1950. none of

  1951. us

  1952. have.

  1953. Not

  1954. one.

  1955. Even

  1956. the best

  1957. of us

  1958. has not

  1959. met

  1960. this

  1961. portrait.

  1962. We may

  1963. have the

  1964. outline of

  1965. the portrait,

  1966. but it's

  1967. marred.

  1968. It's

  1969. destroyed by

  1970. our fallen

  1971. nature,

  1972. our

  1973. sinfulness.

  1974. Who of

  1975. us has

  1976. lived

  1977. blamelessly,

  1978. always doing

  1979. what's

  1980. right?

  1981. Who of

  1982. us

  1983. love

  1984. us?

  1985. Always

  1986. is

  1987. committed

  1988. to

  1989. truth.

  1990. Always

  1991. loves

  1992. others

  1993. as we

  1994. love

  1995. ourselves.

  1996. Always

  1997. esteems

  1998. the

  1999. righteous

  2000. above

  2001. the

  2002. wicked

  2003. who's

  2004. never

  2005. taken

  2006. advantage

  2007. of

  2008. someone

  2009. to

  2010. benefit

  2011. themselves.

  2012. Who of

  2013. us

  2014. meets

  2015. this

  2016. description?

  2017. Not

  2018. one.

  2019. one

  2020. might

  2021. argue

  2022. that

  2023. really

  2024. what

  2025. the

  2026. psalm

  2027. means

  2028. to

  2029. say

  2030. is

  2031. that

  2032. if

  2033. your

  2034. life

  2035. is

  2036. generally

  2037. categorized

  2038. by

  2039. this

  2040. kind

  2041. of

  2042. righteousness,

  2043. it's

  2044. enough

  2045. to be

  2046. accepted

  2047. into

  2048. God's

  2049. good

  2050. graces.

  2051. That's

  2052. a very

  2053. real

  2054. argument.

  2055. Perhaps

  2056. maybe it's

  2057. something

  2058. you're

  2059. even

  2060. dealing

  2061. with

  2062. now

  2063. as

  2064. we're

  2065. working

  2066. through

  2067. this

  2068. text.

  2069. Well,

  2070. he's

  2071. not

  2072. speaking

  2073. in

  2074. absolutes

  2075. here.

  2076. He's

  2077. speaking

  2078. in

  2079. generalities

  2080. that

  2081. if

  2082. your

  2083. life

  2084. is

  2085. characterized

  2086. by

  2087. these

  2088. things

  2089. more

  2090. than

  2091. it

  2092. isn't,

  2093. then

  2094. that's

  2095. enough

  2096. to

  2097. kind

  2098. of

  2099. bring

  2100. you

  2101. into

  2102. God's

  2103. good

  2104. graces.

  2105. A

  2106. logical

  2107. approach

  2108. to the

  2109. scriptures

  2110. refutes

  2111. that idea

  2112. though.

  2113. Just

  2114. think

  2115. for just

  2116. a

  2117. moment.

  2118. It

  2119. took

  2120. one

  2121. offense

  2122. against

  2123. God.

  2124. For

  2125. Adam

  2126. and

  2127. Eve,

  2128. to be

  2129. expelled

  2130. from

  2131. his

  2132. presence.

  2133. Only

  2134. one.

  2135. And

  2136. we

  2137. could

  2138. look

  2139. at

  2140. that

  2141. and

  2142. say

  2143. it

  2144. wasn't

  2145. a

  2146. big

  2147. deal.

  2148. They

  2149. ate

  2150. some

  2151. fruit.

  2152. We've

  2153. done

  2154. way

  2155. worse,

  2156. haven't

  2157. we?

  2158. All

  2159. of us

  2160. have.

  2161. And

  2162. I'm

  2163. sure

  2164. they

  2165. continued

  2166. to.

  2167. But

  2168. it

  2169. only

  2170. took

  2171. one.

  2172. Who

  2173. are

  2174. we

  2175. to

  2176. think

  2177. that

  2178. it

  2179. will

  2180. take

  2181. a

  2182. hundred

  2183. or

  2184. a

  2185. thousand

  2186. or

  2187. ten

  2188. thousand

  2189. offenses

  2190. for God

  2191. to judge

  2192. us in

  2193. the same

  2194. way.

  2195. Is that

  2196. not the

  2197. pinnacle

  2198. of pride

  2199. and

  2200. arrogance?

  2201. To say

  2202. that I'm

  2203. so much

  2204. better than

  2205. Adam and

  2206. Eve

  2207. that God

  2208. will not

  2209. judge me

  2210. as severely

  2211. as he will

  2212. judge them

  2213. or has

  2214. judge them.

  2215. The fact

  2216. is it's

  2217. impossible

  2218. to support

  2219. moralism

  2220. as a

  2221. means of

  2222. reconciliation

  2223. with God.

  2224. Present

  2225. goodness

  2226. cannot

  2227. atone

  2228. for past

  2229. sin.

  2230. It's

  2231. just not

  2232. logical.

  2233. Second

  2234. question.

  2235. Why is

  2236. the standard

  2237. moral

  2238. perfection?

  2239. None of

  2240. us meets

  2241. the description

  2242. here.

  2243. Why does

  2244. God set

  2245. the bar

  2246. so high?

  2247. It doesn't

  2248. actually seem

  2249. very fair.

  2250. God

  2251. didn't expel

  2252. man from

  2253. his presence

  2254. because he's

  2255. full of

  2256. hate.

  2257. That would

  2258. be some

  2259. conclusions.

  2260. I don't

  2261. think that's

  2262. what we

  2263. are able to

  2264. discern from

  2265. the scriptures.

  2266. He did

  2267. so because

  2268. he's

  2269. absolutely

  2270. holy.

  2271. psalm 5

  2272. and verse

  2273. 4 I

  2274. quoted it

  2275. a moment

  2276. ago.

  2277. It affirms

  2278. that sinners

  2279. can't dwell

  2280. with God

  2281. but why

  2282. is that?

  2283. We

  2284. shouldn't

  2285. understand

  2286. the

  2287. relationship

  2288. of sinners

  2289. to God

  2290. the same

  2291. way that

  2292. we might

  2293. understand

  2294. the relationship

  2295. of kryptonite

  2296. to Superman

  2297. for you

  2298. comic nerds.

  2299. Sometimes we

  2300. equate it

  2301. that way.

  2302. That's not

  2303. the way we

  2304. need to

  2305. think about

  2306. this.

  2307. Sin isn't

  2308. a disease

  2309. that God

  2310. can catch.

  2311. It's not

  2312. a weapon

  2313. that can

  2314. destroy him.

  2315. Sinners

  2316. can't harm

  2317. God.

  2318. But they

  2319. can't enter

  2320. his presence

  2321. without him

  2322. harming

  2323. them.

  2324. Moving

  2325. to swift

  2326. eternal

  2327. judgment.

  2328. So we

  2329. need to

  2330. understand

  2331. that God's

  2332. inerrant

  2333. holiness

  2334. and

  2335. perfection.

  2336. It

  2337. demands

  2338. that he

  2339. judge

  2340. sin

  2341. and those

  2342. who are

  2343. guilty

  2344. of it.

  2345. It

  2346. demands

  2347. it.

  2348. If he

  2349. is not

  2350. just

  2351. in judging

  2352. sin

  2353. then he

  2354. is not

  2355. holy

  2356. himself.

  2357. And yet

  2358. we know

  2359. he's

  2360. holy

  2361. and we

  2362. know

  2363. he's

  2364. just.

  2365. We

  2366. also need

  2367. to understand

  2368. that God's

  2369. holiness

  2370. is in

  2371. relation

  2372. to his

  2373. loving

  2374. grace.

  2375. You

  2376. can't

  2377. have one

  2378. without

  2379. the

  2380. other.

  2381. Think

  2382. again.

  2383. Adam

  2384. and Eve.

  2385. He

  2386. could have

  2387. just

  2388. simply

  2389. killed

  2390. them.

  2391. I mean

  2392. why not

  2393. start

  2394. over?

  2395. Why go

  2396. through all

  2397. of this?

  2398. They ate

  2399. the fruit.

  2400. He said

  2401. they would

  2402. surely die.

  2403. Why not

  2404. just destroy

  2405. them and

  2406. start over?

  2407. But he

  2408. doesn't do

  2409. that.

  2410. They go

  2411. on to live

  2412. very long

  2413. lives,

  2414. fruitful

  2415. lives.

  2416. Have you

  2417. ever wondered

  2418. why that

  2419. is?

  2420. It's

  2421. God's

  2422. loving

  2423. grace

  2424. at work.

  2425. God

  2426. cast

  2427. Adam

  2428. and Eve

  2429. from his

  2430. presence

  2431. because for

  2432. them to

  2433. remain in

  2434. his presence

  2435. as sinners

  2436. would require

  2437. immediate

  2438. judgment.

  2439. But God

  2440. in his

  2441. great love

  2442. and grace

  2443. gave them

  2444. life,

  2445. time

  2446. for

  2447. repentance

  2448. and

  2449. restoration.

  2450. Moral

  2451. perfection

  2452. is not

  2453. one of

  2454. many

  2455. options

  2456. and God

  2457. just happens

  2458. to choose

  2459. that and

  2460. apply it

  2461. to our

  2462. situation.

  2463. No,

  2464. there actually

  2465. are no

  2466. options.

  2467. It's the

  2468. only possible

  2469. standard there

  2470. could be

  2471. because God

  2472. is perfectly

  2473. holy.

  2474. Third

  2475. question,

  2476. is there

  2477. any hope

  2478. for us?

  2479. Is there

  2480. any hope?

  2481. If we

  2482. take Psalm

  2483. 15,

  2484. on its

  2485. own,

  2486. it's

  2487. bleak.

  2488. It's

  2489. very

  2490. bleak.

  2491. We can't

  2492. take Psalm

  2493. 15 on

  2494. its own.

  2495. We have

  2496. to look

  2497. at it

  2498. in relation

  2499. to the

  2500. whole

  2501. Bible.

  2502. And the

  2503. good news

  2504. of the

  2505. gospel is

  2506. that we

  2507. don't

  2508. actually have

  2509. to earn

  2510. our way

  2511. into God's

  2512. presence.

  2513. This is,

  2514. I think,

  2515. more wonderful

  2516. than sometimes

  2517. we allow

  2518. ourselves to

  2519. feel.

  2520. we feel

  2521. the weight

  2522. of the

  2523. sinful part.

  2524. We feel

  2525. the weight

  2526. of the

  2527. fact that

  2528. we have

  2529. sinned

  2530. against God

  2531. in our

  2532. very nature.

  2533. We deserve

  2534. His judgment.

  2535. We feel

  2536. that,

  2537. but then it's

  2538. almost as if

  2539. sometimes we

  2540. don't allow

  2541. ourselves to

  2542. feel the

  2543. wonder of

  2544. this part,

  2545. which is that

  2546. you don't have

  2547. to earn your

  2548. way to

  2549. His presence.

  2550. He has

  2551. made a

  2552. way.

  2553. He has

  2554. opened the

  2555. door.

  2556. We didn't

  2557. even ask for

  2558. it.

  2559. He just

  2560. did it.

  2561. Why?

  2562. Because He

  2563. loves us.

  2564. Because He

  2565. loves you.

  2566. He's made

  2567. a way.

  2568. He's opened

  2569. a door.

  2570. And then He

  2571. invites you

  2572. to turn

  2573. from that

  2574. rebellion,

  2575. to walk

  2576. in His

  2577. way by

  2578. faith.

  2579. What is

  2580. the way?

  2581. What is

  2582. that door?

  2583. It's

  2584. Jesus.

  2585. John 14

  2586. 6,

  2587. Jesus says

  2588. it right

  2589. away.

  2590. I am

  2591. the way.

  2592. I'm

  2593. the truth.

  2594. I'm

  2595. the life.

  2596. No one

  2597. comes to

  2598. the Father

  2599. except through

  2600. me.

  2601. Now notice,

  2602. going back

  2603. all the way

  2604. to the

  2605. beginning of

  2606. the sermon,

  2607. notice what

  2608. Jesus doesn't

  2609. say.

  2610. He doesn't

  2611. say no

  2612. one comes

  2613. to heaven

  2614. except through

  2615. me.

  2616. He doesn't

  2617. say no

  2618. one experiences

  2619. pleasure unless

  2620. they come

  2621. through me.

  2622. Those things

  2623. are true.

  2624. That's not

  2625. what He says.

  2626. What does

  2627. He say?

  2628. No one

  2629. can get

  2630. to God's

  2631. holy hill.

  2632. No one

  2633. can sojourn

  2634. in His

  2635. tent.

  2636. No one

  2637. can be

  2638. at peace

  2639. with Him

  2640. unless they

  2641. come through

  2642. me.

  2643. I'm the

  2644. way.

  2645. And then

  2646. He says

  2647. in John

  2648. 10,

  2649. I'm the

  2650. door.

  2651. If anyone

  2652. enters by

  2653. me,

  2654. he will

  2655. be saved.

  2656. This is a

  2657. promise,

  2658. even more

  2659. than it's

  2660. an invitation.

  2661. salvation.

  2662. Jesus

  2663. states

  2664. fact.

  2665. I am

  2666. salvation.

  2667. If you

  2668. come to

  2669. me and

  2670. you come

  2671. to God

  2672. through me,

  2673. you will

  2674. be saved.

  2675. There's no

  2676. question.

  2677. You don't

  2678. have to

  2679. wonder.

  2680. You don't

  2681. have to

  2682. look at

  2683. your life

  2684. and say,

  2685. well,

  2686. did I do

  2687. enough?

  2688. You don't

  2689. have to

  2690. look at

  2691. your life

  2692. and say,

  2693. well,

  2694. was I

  2695. too bad

  2696. in this

  2697. area or

  2698. I still

  2699. messed

  2700. it up?

  2701. No.

  2702. Your

  2703. goodness

  2704. isn't the

  2705. door.

  2706. Jesus

  2707. is the

  2708. door.

  2709. And he

  2710. says,

  2711. if you

  2712. will walk

  2713. through his

  2714. door,

  2715. you will

  2716. be saved.

  2717. It's a

  2718. guarantee.

  2719. It's good

  2720. news.

  2721. It should

  2722. come as no

  2723. surprise to

  2724. us then,

  2725. based on our

  2726. study of

  2727. these first

  2728. 15 Psalms,

  2729. that only

  2730. the blessed

  2731. man of

  2732. Psalm 1

  2733. and the

  2734. anointed

  2735. king of

  2736. Psalm 2

  2737. and the

  2738. exalted

  2739. man of

  2740. Psalm 8

  2741. perfectly

  2742. fulfills

  2743. Psalm 15.

  2744. What is it

  2745. that I'm

  2746. always telling

  2747. you?

  2748. The

  2749. scriptures,

  2750. they're all

  2751. about

  2752. Jesus.

  2753. They all

  2754. take us

  2755. to Jesus.

  2756. Why?

  2757. Because he

  2758. is the

  2759. way.

  2760. He's the

  2761. way.

  2762. And while

  2763. who,

  2764. in Psalm

  2765. 15 1

  2766. is generic,

  2767. embracing

  2768. every person

  2769. who matches

  2770. the portrait,

  2771. we know

  2772. that only

  2773. Jesus has

  2774. done so

  2775. to perfection.

  2776. And indeed

  2777. he has.

  2778. Only he

  2779. meets the

  2780. qualifications

  2781. here.

  2782. And it is

  2783. only through

  2784. him that we

  2785. can be

  2786. reconciled to

  2787. God.

  2788. You say,

  2789. how can we

  2790. know that

  2791. Jesus actually

  2792. did enough?

  2793. Well,

  2794. great question.

  2795. I know

  2796. that my

  2797. Redeemer

  2798. lives.

  2799. And all

  2800. my life

  2801. is bound

  2802. to his.

  2803. That's the

  2804. answer.

  2805. It's in the

  2806. resurrection

  2807. that we know

  2808. the answer.

  2809. You ever

  2810. known anyone

  2811. else to be

  2812. raised from

  2813. the dead

  2814. because they

  2815. perfectly

  2816. fulfilled the

  2817. law of God?

  2818. No.

  2819. Because it

  2820. hasn't happened

  2821. except one

  2822. time.

  2823. And it was

  2824. Jesus of

  2825. Nazareth,

  2826. the Son of

  2827. God,

  2828. born of a

  2829. virgin,

  2830. who lived a

  2831. perfect life,

  2832. who lived the

  2833. life we were

  2834. meant to live,

  2835. but failed

  2836. to live.

  2837. And then

  2838. died the

  2839. death that

  2840. we deserve

  2841. to die

  2842. so that we

  2843. might be

  2844. saved.

  2845. Don't you

  2846. see?

  2847. Don't you

  2848. see?

  2849. His atonement

  2850. is sufficient.

  2851. He has

  2852. made peace

  2853. between God

  2854. and man.

  2855. It's done.

  2856. Nothing else

  2857. is left.

  2858. And he just

  2859. says,

  2860. come.

  2861. He says,

  2862. come.

  2863. He invites

  2864. us to be

  2865. reconciled to

  2866. God.

  2867. God.

  2868. And how

  2869. do we

  2870. do that?

  2871. Stop

  2872. pursuing your

  2873. moralism.

  2874. Stop

  2875. pursuing

  2876. Christianity

  2877. as a

  2878. thing.

  2879. Turn

  2880. from your

  2881. sin,

  2882. or at

  2883. least your

  2884. disposition

  2885. towards sin,

  2886. and come

  2887. to him.

  2888. Trust

  2889. that what

  2890. he's done

  2891. is sufficient.

  2892. Follow

  2893. him

  2894. as Savior

  2895. and Lord.

  2896. no one

  2897. whom God

  2898. has not

  2899. regenerated

  2900. in heart

  2901. will do

  2902. that.

  2903. And you

  2904. may feel

  2905. the tug

  2906. of that

  2907. now.

  2908. It's not

  2909. because you're

  2910. just finally

  2911. getting it.

  2912. That's the

  2913. work of God

  2914. in your

  2915. life.

  2916. Don't

  2917. ignore

  2918. that.

  2919. Come

  2920. to him.

  2921. Fourth

  2922. question,

  2923. importantly.

  2924. do these

  2925. qualities

  2926. still

  2927. matter

  2928. if we're

  2929. safe in

  2930. Christ?

  2931. Do the

  2932. qualities

  2933. still matter

  2934. if we're

  2935. safe in

  2936. Christ?

  2937. So,

  2938. one argument

  2939. might be,

  2940. well,

  2941. grace,

  2942. salvation,

  2943. and forgiveness

  2944. that comes

  2945. from Jesus

  2946. is for the

  2947. sins that I've

  2948. committed,

  2949. the sins that I

  2950. am committing,

  2951. and the sins

  2952. that I will

  2953. commit.

  2954. And to

  2955. that we

  2956. say,

  2957. amen.

  2958. Yes,

  2959. that's true.

  2960. Some would

  2961. look at that

  2962. and they would

  2963. then conclude

  2964. that,

  2965. well,

  2966. then I don't

  2967. have to be

  2968. really all

  2969. that concerned

  2970. about sinning.

  2971. That's not

  2972. what the Bible

  2973. presents to us

  2974. though,

  2975. is it?

  2976. We need to

  2977. see Psalm

  2978. 15 first

  2979. through the

  2980. lens of the

  2981. gospel.

  2982. But that

  2983. doesn't mean

  2984. that we

  2985. shouldn't

  2986. strive to

  2987. attain

  2988. something of

  2989. the portrait

  2990. of holiness

  2991. that's painted

  2992. here.

  2993. Our

  2994. acceptance

  2995. with God

  2996. is based

  2997. solely

  2998. and entirely

  2999. on the

  3000. righteousness

  3001. of Christ.

  3002. But he

  3003. desires to

  3004. conform

  3005. his people

  3006. to the

  3007. image of

  3008. his son.

  3009. You say,

  3010. well,

  3011. what's the

  3012. image of

  3013. Christ?

  3014. Psalm 15

  3015. is.

  3016. You're

  3017. saying,

  3018. God wants

  3019. me to

  3020. try to

  3021. be like

  3022. that?

  3023. Yeah.

  3024. Not as a

  3025. means of

  3026. earning your

  3027. way into

  3028. his good

  3029. graces,

  3030. but because

  3031. you're already

  3032. there.

  3033. because he's

  3034. already saved

  3035. you.

  3036. Hebrews

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  3037. chapter 12

  3038. and verse

  3039. 14 is so

  3040. helpful here.

  3041. Here's what

  3042. the writer

  3043. says.

  3044. Strive

  3045. for peace

  3046. with everyone,

  3047. he says,

  3048. and for

  3049. the holiness

  3050. without which

  3051. no one

  3052. will see

  3053. the Lord.

  3054. I want you

  3055. to think

  3056. about that.

  3057. strive for

  3058. the holiness

  3059. !

  3060. We might

  3061. say,

  3062. without

  3063. which no

  3064. one will

  3065. dwell on

  3066. his holy

  3067. hill,

  3068. without which

  3069. no one

  3070. will sojourn

  3071. in his

  3072. tent.

  3073. Here's what

  3074. the writer

  3075. does not

  3076. mean.

  3077. He does

  3078. not mean

  3079. that we

  3080. must reach

  3081. a measure

  3082. of holiness

  3083. to see

  3084. the Lord.

  3085. He's

  3086. acknowledging

  3087. that

  3088. positionally

  3089. that holiness

  3090. has already

  3091. been applied

  3092. to those

  3093. who are

  3094. in Christ.

  3095. His

  3096. instruction

  3097. then is

  3098. that we

  3099. continue

  3100. striving to

  3101. live up to

  3102. the holiness

  3103. that has been

  3104. credited to

  3105. us by

  3106. grace.

  3107. Isn't that

  3108. helpful?

  3109. What does

  3110. salvation do?

  3111. It makes

  3112. you free

  3113. to do

  3114. righteousness

  3115. because you're

  3116. already

  3117. positionally

  3118. righteous

  3119. in Christ.

  3120. That's not

  3121. what's at

  3122. stake here.

  3123. And the

  3124. writer says,

  3125. so here's

  3126. what we

  3127. do as

  3128. believers.

  3129. We strive

  3130. to live

  3131. up to

  3132. that.

  3133. Not as

  3134. a means

  3135. of salvation,

  3136. but because

  3137. we want

  3138. to honor

  3139. our Lord.

  3140. Because we

  3141. want to

  3142. please him.

  3143. Because we

  3144. want to

  3145. be like

  3146. him.

  3147. Though

  3148. we'll never

  3149. reach

  3150. perfection,

  3151. we must

  3152. if we are

  3153. to be

  3154. obedient.

  3155. be as

  3156. holy as

  3157. possible.

  3158. Which is

  3159. why Paul

  3160. says this

  3161. to the

  3162. Philippians

  3163. in Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  3164. chapter 3.

  3165. He acknowledges

  3166. not that I

  3167. have already

  3168. obtained this,

  3169. this measure,

  3170. this stature

  3171. of holiness,

  3172. and it's

  3173. not that I'm

  3174. already perfect,

  3175. but I press

  3176. on to make

  3177. it my own.

  3178. Because Christ

  3179. Jesus has

  3180. made me

  3181. his own.

  3182. Oh,

  3183. do you

  3184. see it?

  3185. it's the

  3186. same thing

  3187. the author

  3188. of Hebrews

  3189. is saying.

  3190. Paul says,

  3191. Christ has

  3192. made me

  3193. his own.

  3194. He's

  3195. cleaned me

  3196. up without

  3197. any merit

  3198. on my

  3199. part.

  3200. And since

  3201. he's made

  3202. me his

  3203. own,

  3204. I want

  3205. to strive

  3206. to be

  3207. like him.

  3208. Brothers,

  3209. I do not

  3210. consider that

  3211. I've made

  3212. it my own.

  3213. He's not

  3214. where he

  3215. wants to

  3216. be.

  3217. But one

  3218. thing I

  3219. do,

  3220. forgetting

  3221. what lies

  3222. behind,

  3223. straining

  3224. forward to

  3225. what lies

  3226. ahead,

  3227. I press

  3228. on.

  3229. I press

  3230. on toward

  3231. the goal

  3232. for the

  3233. prize of

  3234. the upward

  3235. call of

  3236. God in

  3237. Christ Jesus.

  3238. And now

  3239. notice what

  3240. he says,

  3241. Christian,

  3242. let those

  3243. of us who

  3244. are mature,

  3245. spiritually

  3246. mature,

  3247. let us

  3248. think this

  3249. way.

  3250. If we

  3251. are going

  3252. to live

  3253. as spiritually

  3254. mature

  3255. Christians,

  3256. we will

  3257. pursue

  3258. holiness,

  3259. not justify

  3260. worldliness.

  3261. If you're

  3262. in Christ,

  3263. God has

  3264. blessed you

  3265. with the

  3266. most amazing

  3267. gift.

  3268. It's the

  3269. indwelling

  3270. presence

  3271. of his

  3272. Holy Spirit.

  3273. David

  3274. asked,

  3275. who will

  3276. dwell with

  3277. you,

  3278. God?

  3279. The New

  3280. Testament

  3281. tells us

  3282. God still

  3283. dwells with

  3284. us.

  3285. And he

  3286. dwells

  3287. in us,

  3288. those he's

  3289. redeemed.

  3290. Here's the

  3291. blessing.

  3292. Do you

  3293. know what

  3294. the Holy

  3295. Spirit does?

  3296. The Holy

  3297. Spirit,

  3298. he's freed

  3299. you from

  3300. the bondage

  3301. of sin.

  3302. You're free.

  3303. Truly

  3304. free.

  3305. And he's

  3306. working in

  3307. you to

  3308. transform your

  3309. affections

  3310. day by

  3311. day.

  3312. He is

  3313. enabling

  3314. your

  3315. righteousness.

  3316. He has

  3317. given you

  3318. power to

  3319. live according

  3320. to Psalm

  3321. 15.

  3322. Therefore,

  3323. keep in step

  3324. with him.

  3325. That's what

  3326. Paul says.

  3327. Keep in step

  3328. with the

  3329. Spirit.

  3330. Walk in the

  3331. Spirit,

  3332. he says,

  3333. and you

  3334. will not

  3335. satisfy the

  3336. desires of

  3337. the flesh,

  3338. but you

  3339. will live

  3340. according to

  3341. what God

  3342. has saved

  3343. you to

  3344. live.

  3345. Thank you.
