  1. We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers,

  2. remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love

  3. and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

  4. There's a lot of ways to learn about a person, isn't there?

  5. But perhaps the best way to really get a sense of who a person is

  6. is if you can ever get a hold of some kind of personal correspondence that they have sent or received,

  7. maybe in the form of a letter or a journal.

  8. That's the reason that those of you who are ladies who had a journal as a middle school

  9. or as a teenage girl hid them in private places so that your brothers couldn't get to them

  10. and see what's really in your mind about them or about someone or about things that are going on in your life.

  11. You get a sense of who a person is that way, don't you?

  12. I mentioned to you last week by way of introduction to 1 Thessalonians

  13. how that when Julie and I were in college,

  14. there was a letter exchange program on campus for the student body

  15. that they called the Pony Express and it was a way for you to send lots of things

  16. but primarily you'd send your love letters to the people that you were interested in.

  17. And Julie and I took advantage of that and the girls discovered that during the sermon last Sunday.

  18. And then Ashlyn and Harper discovered that Julie actually keeps a box full of those letters

  19. from college in our closet.

  20. And from what I understand from Julie, the girls have been eager to get their eyes on those letters.

  21. And I sat and I thought as I was preparing for this sermon this week,

  22. I thought, why do they want to read these letters?

  23. These things would probably be so cheesy.

  24. Like it's just going to make them laugh probably more than anything else.

  25. And maybe that's why they want to read them.

  26. I think there might be a little bit more to it.

  27. But they know Julie and me better than anybody else in the world.

  28. Nobody knows mine and Julie's heart and our behavior and who we are

  29. better than the three girls that live in our house with us every single day.

  30. Why would they care to read these letters?

  31. Because despite that fact, they know that reading those letters will give them

  32. an even fuller sense and understanding of their parents.

  33. And of our love and of our lives together.

  34. They want to read them because they want to get inside our hearts, so to speak,

  35. so that they might get a better sense of who we are.

  36. That's why we do that.

  37. When we come to the first three chapters of 1 Thessalonians,

  38. what we have here is it consists primarily of personal correspondence.

  39. And it's through this personal portion of the letter that we get the best sense of the people involved.

  40. We often think of the Apostle Paul as a brilliant theologian,

  41. as an impactful and useful preacher of the gospel.

  42. We think of him as an accomplished missionary in the early church and establishing churches,

  43. really as far as he was concerned, all over the world and the known world in his mind.

  44. And yet when we come to 1 Thessalonians in particular, we see it in other places,

  45. but in 1 Thessalonians in particular, in these first three chapters,

  46. we start to get a different sense, a fuller sense for Paul.

  47. We see him here as a pastor.

  48. We see him as a friend.

  49. And it gives us a fuller sense of who he was as we read what he wrote to these individuals.

  50. But it doesn't just give us that.

  51. It also gives us a better sense of the people in Thessalonica,

  52. particularly a better sense of their radical conversion.

  53. We just get a little piece of that in Luke's narrative in Acts chapter 17.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  54. But when we come to the letters that Paul,

  55. in the personal correspondence that they add with one another,

  56. we get a better sense of their radical conversion to Christ.

  57. And primarily we get really a wonderful sense of their perseverance of faith

  58. in the face of really quite extreme persecution.

  59. As we'll see in the coming weeks, even in the remainder of this paragraph in chapter 1,

  60. their perseverance was the thing that stuck out the most about them.

  61. It was their perseverance of faith that was so commendable that unbeknownst to them,

  62. they actually became an example of faithfulness to all the other churches in their region.

  63. It was really quite amazing.

  64. Well, this morning we turn our attention here to the opening statements of this correspondence.

  65. And as was Paul was wont to do in the letters that he wrote to the churches,

  66. he opens this one with a statement of thanksgiving for the church.

  67. And that's what's recorded in these two verses.

  68. It's primarily just a prayer of thanksgiving on behalf of the Thessalonian Christians.

  69. It's a prayer of thanksgiving that is shaped entirely by the gospel message

  70. that we know this church was rooted in from our study last week.

  71. Now what I want to do is I want to draw out this morning more than just Paul's thankful heart.

  72. We're going to address that.

  73. That's important.

  74. There's things we can learn from that to be sure.

  75. But that's not what I want us to focus most of our attention on.

  76. I don't think it's the main emphasis of what he's saying.

  77. The focus of his thanks is what we really want to draw our minds focus to.

  78. The focus of his thanks is the fruit of genuine Christianity that marked the Thessalonian church.

  79. What is the essence of a true Christian?

  80. How might we define that from a biblical sense?

  81. That is what this text helps us to understand.

  82. And that's what I want the focus of our study together to be.

  83. I want to show you from this text the fundamental marks of a true Christian.

  84. Not a professing Christian.

  85. A true Christian.

  86. The first thing I want you to see, we'll skip verse 2, we'll come back to it.

  87. And I want to go directly to verse 3.

  88. That's where the emphasis is.

  89. And this is where we find three essential virtues of genuine Christianity.

  90. Just read the verse with me again.

  91. Remembering before our God and Father your work of faith,

  92. your labor of love,

  93. and your steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  94. You notice the common triad here.

  95. Faith, love, and hope are a triad of Christian virtues that are repeated regularly throughout the New Testament

  96. in reference to what is the essence of a true Christian.

  97. What marks them.

  98. And very often we see these three things put together in that description.

  99. Let me give you just three examples to show you how this is repeated in the New Testament.

  100. Galatians chapter 5 verses 5 and 6.

    Galatians 5:5

  101. Paul again writes to this church and he says that it is through the Holy Spirit,

  102. by faith,

  103. that we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.

  104. For in Christ Jesus,

  105. neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything,

  106. but only faith working through love.

  107. Here's the triad again,

  108. intentionally brought together by the apostle

  109. in connection with the person and the work of Jesus Christ

  110. in order to say,

  111. as he does in verse 6,

  112. that who you are is irrelevant

  113. to whether or not you're a Christian.

  114. Your context is irrelevant

  115. to whether or not you're a Christian,

  116. but it is faith working through love

  117. that shows up in the hope of righteousness

  118. and the hope of Jesus Christ.

  119. What is the essence of a true Christian?

  120. Faith, hope, and love.

  121. 1 Peter chapter 1 verses 21 through 23.

    1 Peter 1:21–23

  122. Peter writes,

  123. You through Christ are believers in God

  124. who raised Christ from the dead

  125. and gave him glory

  126. so that your faith and hope are in God.

  127. Having purified your souls

  128. by your obedience to the truth

  129. for a sincere brotherly love,

  130. love one another earnestly from a pure heart

  131. since you have been born again,

  132. not of perishable seed,

  133. but of imperishable.

  134. How does this faith, love, and hope come about?

  135. Last phrase of the verse.

  136. Through the living and abiding word of God.

  137. What is the essence of a true Christian?

  138. Peter says,

  139. Well, it has elements of faith and hope and love

  140. all tied to the gospel of Jesus,

  141. and it comes about as a work of grace

  142. through the scriptures,

  143. through the word of God.

  144. Hebrews chapter 6 is the third one I'd like to show you.

    Hebrews 6 chapter mention

  145. There are many more that you could look at,

  146. most notably would be 1 Corinthians 13, 13.

  147. You probably, maybe you had this displayed at your wedding.

  148. Then there is faith and hope and love,

  149. but the greatest of these is love.

  150. Why would Paul even say that?

  151. It's not that love is more significant

  152. than hope and faith

  153. when it comes to these virtues.

  154. It's that there will come a time

  155. when faith and hope will no longer be necessary.

  156. They will be fulfilled.

  157. But even at that time,

  158. the love will continue.

  159. But it's Hebrews chapter 6

    Hebrews 6 chapter mention

  160. that I want to draw your attention to now.

  161. Verse 10.

  162. God is not unjust

  163. so as to overlook your work

  164. and the love that you have shown for his name

  165. in serving the saints.

  166. Now what is the nature of this virtuous love?

  167. It is love towards others

  168. in the name of God and his son Jesus.

  169. And we desire each one of you

  170. to show the same earnestness,

  171. to have the full assurance of hope

  172. until the end

  173. so that you may not be sluggish,

  174. but imitators of those

  175. who through faith and patience

  176. inherit the promises.

  177. Again, faith, hope, and love,

  178. this triad of Christian virtue.

  179. What is the essence of a true Christian?

  180. We continually come back in different ways

  181. to this triad in the New Testament.

  182. Every true Christian possesses them

  183. and they will continually grow

  184. and flourish

  185. as believers mature in Christ.

  186. These three virtues

  187. will only get bigger

  188. and broader

  189. and wider

  190. and more evident.

  191. But what is the relationship

  192. of the three of them together?

  193. Back to 1 Thessalonians 1 and verse 3.

  194. What is the relationship

  195. of them together?

  196. Is there a relationship

  197. of these three virtues together?

  198. And I would suggest that there is.

  199. The faith that Paul mentions

  200. in this verse

  201. is not unloving

  202. or without hope.

  203. The love that he mentions here

  204. is not unbelieving

  205. or hopeless.

  206. The hope that he mentions here

  207. is not unloving

  208. or unbelieving.

  209. Else it wouldn't be what it is.

  210. There is an interconnectedness here.

  211. Though each virtue is distinct,

  212. they are not independent

  213. of one another.

  214. They are interconnected

  215. and they are interconnected

  216. by the final statement

  217. of verse 3.

  218. That all of these things

  219. are functioning,

  220. that they are grounded

  221. and that they are rooted

  222. in what?

  223. That they are rooted

  224. in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  225. faith in the person

  226. and work of Jesus Christ

  227. produces true works

  228. of righteousness.

  229. Love for Jesus

  230. motivates the Christian's love

  231. for others.

  232. Hope in Jesus

  233. brings about the steadfastness

  234. of faith

  235. in the face

  236. of suffering.

  237. The three virtues

  238. are unique perspectives

  239. of one event

  240. in a person's life.

  241. That is their conversion

  242. to Jesus Christ.

  243. Meaning

  244. that all three

  245. are essential to

  246. and will be present

  247. in anyone

  248. who is a true,

  249. genuine,

  250. biblical,

  251. Christian.

  252. Faith,

  253. not in faith itself,

  254. but faith

  255. in Jesus

  256. in particular.

  257. Love,

  258. not in a generic sense,

  259. but love

  260. for Jesus

  261. in particular.

  262. Hope,

  263. not in wishful thinking,

  264. but hope

  265. that is rooted

  266. in Jesus

  267. in particular.

  268. To say it another way,

  269. without these three virtues

  270. being present

  271. and rooted in Jesus,

  272. you cannot possibly be

  273. a true Christian.

  274. They are the essence

  275. of genuine conversion

  276. and they have everything

  277. to do with Christ.

  278. They are the fruit.

  279. Jesus

  280. is the root.

  281. Now,

  282. Paul's thanksgiving

  283. for the Thessalonian Christians

  284. is focused

  285. on their display

  286. of these fundamental

  287. virtues.

  288. But the way

  289. that he speaks

  290. about them

  291. is actually quite unique.

  292. Every statement

  293. includes a spiritual action

  294. that is motivated

  295. by a specific virtue.

  296. Just set your eyes

  297. on it again.

  298. He says

  299. of their work

  300. of faith.

  301. That is,

  302. this faith

  303. motivates

  304. and produces

  305. certain works.

  306. Then he talks

  307. about their labor

  308. of love.

  309. That is,

  310. their love

  311. for Christ

  312. produces

  313. a kind of loving

  314. labor

  315. for Christ

  316. and for others.

  317. Then he talks

  318. about their steadfastness

  319. of hope.

  320. That is,

  321. their hope

  322. in Jesus

  323. produces then

  324. a steadfastness.

  325. That is the only way

  326. it works.

  327. The works

  328. cannot possibly

  329. produce

  330. the things

  331. themselves.

  332. Works

  333. does not produce

  334. faith.

  335. It is the other way

  336. around,

  337. isn't it?

  338. Faith produces works.

  339. Labor

  340. does not lead

  341. to love.

  342. Labor may actually

  343. lead to hate.

  344. It is the love

  345. that leads

  346. to joyful labor.

  347. Steadfastness

  348. or just pulling

  349. yourself up

  350. by your bootstrap

  351. is not what

  352. is going to get

  353. you through

  354. and produce hope.

  355. No,

  356. it is not how it works.

  357. We know it works

  358. the other way around,

  359. doesn't it?

  360. That is Paul's point.

  361. It is unique.

  362. He mentions the triad

  363. but he mentions

  364. these spiritual actions

  365. that are revealed,

  366. that reveal

  367. this triad

  368. of Christian virtue.

  369. What I want to do

  370. here for just a moment

  371. is take each of them

  372. in turn.

  373. Let's look first

  374. at the work

  375. of faith.

  376. The work of faith.

  377. Paul,

  378. of course,

  379. he does not mean

  380. to imply

  381. a connection

  382. between human merit

  383. and eternal salvation.

  384. We know that

  385. because he has settled

  386. that anti-gospel heresy

  387. sufficiently

  388. in other places.

  389. Let me give you

  390. two examples.

  391. Romans chapter 3

    Romans 3:19–30

  392. verses 19 to 30.

  393. Paul,

  394. writing to the church

  395. in Rome,

  396. says,

  397. Now we know

  398. that whatever the law says,

  399. it speaks to those

  400. who are under the law

  401. so that every mouth

  402. may be stopped.

  403. That is,

  404. in judgment,

  405. no one will be able

  406. to say,

  407. well,

  408. look what I've done

  409. because everyone

  410. will have to say,

  411. I have not done

  412. what I ought to have done.

  413. I have failed.

  414. I have sinned.

  415. That's the point

  416. of that statement.

  417. And the whole world

  418. may be held accountable

  419. to God.

  420. For by works

  421. of the law,

  422. Paul says,

  423. no human being

  424. will be justified

  425. in God's sight,

  426. will be declared

  427. righteous.

  428. Another way

  429. we might say that

  430. is that it will be

  431. declared as saved

  432. in God's sight

  433. since through the law

  434. does not come

  435. forgiveness of sin.

  436. Through the law

  437. just comes the knowledge

  438. of sin.

  439. The law exposes our sin.

  440. It cannot redeem us

  441. from our sin.

  442. No,

  443. it takes something else

  444. for that.

  445. Galatians chapter 3,

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  446. Paul says it again,

  447. even more elaborately perhaps.

  448. He says in verse 10,

  449. for all who rely

  450. on works of the law

  451. are under a curse.

  452. For it's written,

  453. cursed be everyone

  454. who does not abide

  455. by all things written

  456. in the book of the law

  457. and do them.

  458. Verse 13,

  459. Christ redeemed us

  460. from the curse

  461. of the law.

  462. How?

  463. By becoming a curse

  464. for us.

  465. For it's written,

  466. cursed is everyone

  467. who is hanged on a tree

  468. so that in Christ Jesus

  469. the blessing of Abraham

  470. might come even

  471. to the Gentiles

  472. so that we might receive

  473. the promised spirit.

  474. How?

  475. Through faith.

  476. So we don't need to mistake

  477. what Paul's saying here.

  478. We need to look

  479. at the entire corpus

  480. of Pauline literature

  481. and understand

  482. Paul was not insinuating

  483. or implying in any way here

  484. that it is works

  485. that is connected

  486. in some way

  487. to salvation.

  488. That's not what he means.

  489. And if you're relying

  490. on your morality

  491. to earn some kind

  492. of saving favor

  493. with God,

  494. the scripture makes it clear

  495. particularly in Galatians 3

  496. that you are under a curse.

  497. And what is this curse?

  498. The curse is

  499. that you have not

  500. and will never

  501. fulfill all that

  502. God's moral law

  503. requires of you.

  504. There you are,

  505. thereby you are cursed

  506. to face God's judgment

  507. because you'll never live up

  508. to God's standard.

  509. No human ever will.

  510. We cannot.

  511. So salvation then

  512. is not earned

  513. by what you do.

  514. It is received

  515. by faith

  516. in what Jesus Christ

  517. has done

  518. on your behalf.

  519. You are cursed

  520. under the law.

  521. He never offended

  522. the law

  523. even in one way.

  524. He fulfilled it

  525. on your behalf.

  526. He lived the life

  527. that we were meant

  528. to live

  529. as I often say.

  530. And then he died

  531. the death

  532. that we deserve

  533. to die.

  534. And in doing so,

  535. he made it possible

  536. for God the Father

  537. to declare us

  538. righteous

  539. even though

  540. we are not so.

  541. Our righteousness

  542. before God

  543. is not an actual

  544. righteousness.

  545. righteousness.

  546. It is what we call

  547. an imputed righteousness.

  548. It is credited

  549. to us

  550. by the work

  551. of Christ

  552. in his death

  553. and in his resurrection.

  554. And it is credited

  555. to us

  556. not through

  557. human merit.

  558. It is credited

  559. to us

  560. through faith

  561. alone.

  562. That being said,

  563. the New Testament

  564. clarifies

  565. that genuine

  566. saving faith

  567. is not

  568. alone.

  569. But it produces,

  570. it is followed

  571. by human

  572. works.

  573. Thus Paul,

  574. when he's referring

  575. to the Thessalonians

  576. here in verse 3,

  577. he recognizes

  578. their faith

  579. and he recognizes

  580. that faith

  581. because it has

  582. produced something

  583. in them.

  584. It has produced

  585. an action

  586. in them.

  587. As the scriptures

  588. make clear,

  589. it does.

  590. James makes

  591. this abundantly

  592. clear.

  593. In James chapter 2

    James 2 chapter mention

  594. and verse 18,

  595. someone will say,

  596. you have faith

  597. and I have works.

  598. James says,

  599. in response

  600. to that person,

  601. show me your faith

  602. apart from your works

  603. and I will show you

  604. my faith

  605. by my works.

  606. You believe

  607. that God is one,

  608. you do well.

  609. But even the demons

  610. believe

  611. and shudder.

  612. What's James'

  613. point there?

  614. He's saying that

  615. intellectual,

  616. assent or belief

  617. is not the thing

  618. that we're aiming

  619. at here.

  620. That's not saving

  621. regenerate faith.

  622. Even the devil

  623. is orthodox

  624. in what he knows

  625. to be true.

  626. And yet he is

  627. not redeemed.

  628. So what does

  629. James mean?

  630. Do you want

  631. to be shown

  632. you foolish person?

  633. He says

  634. that faith

  635. apart from works

  636. is useless

  637. because a faith

  638. that does not work

  639. is not a genuine

  640. saving faith.

  641. That's Paul's

  642. point here.

  643. He says

  644. when I look at you

  645. I'm thankful

  646. for you

  647. because your faith

  648. has produced

  649. certain works.

  650. But what are

  651. those works

  652. that Paul is

  653. referring to?

  654. They are not here

  655. merely what we

  656. would call good deeds.

  657. That's a part of it

  658. to be sure.

  659. But that's not

  660. what he's primarily

  661. referring to

  662. I don't believe.

  663. they are true

  664. works of righteousness

  665. that are motivated

  666. by genuine faith

  667. in Christ.

  668. They include

  669. repentance of sin

  670. not in one moment

  671. but ongoing

  672. continually

  673. in every moment.

  674. A humble heart

  675. of turning away

  676. from sin.

  677. Those are the works

  678. of faith.

  679. they include

  680. trust

  681. in God's word.

  682. You say

  683. how can I trust

  684. something that I

  685. don't fully understand?

  686. Well that's

  687. the nature

  688. of faith.

  689. The works

  690. of faith

  691. include

  692. trusting

  693. what God

  694. has said.

  695. They include

  696. the fruit

  697. of the spirit.

  698. A supernatural

  699. transformation

  700. whereby

  701. as a result

  702. of our faith

  703. and redemption

  704. the Holy Spirit

  705. begins this

  706. progressive transformation

  707. and where

  708. was once

  709. the works

  710. of the flesh

  711. he now

  712. begins to

  713. replace them

  714. with things

  715. like love

  716. and joy

  717. and peace

  718. and long

  719. suffering

  720. and gentleness

  721. and goodness

  722. and faithfulness

  723. and meekness

  724. and temperance

  725. and so on

  726. and so forth

  727. the passage goes.

  728. What are the

  729. works of faith?

  730. Well it is the

  731. evidence of the

  732. fruit of the spirit

  733. in someone's life

  734. and then

  735. yes there's also

  736. good deeds

  737. but we must

  738. not narrow down

  739. the works

  740. of faith

  741. to volunteering

  742. at the homeless

  743. shelter

  744. or providing

  745. some formula

  746. for the people

  747. in the mountains

  748. when they were

  749. really struggling

  750. as many of you

  751. did just last week.

  752. It's not that

  753. that doesn't matter

  754. or that it's irrelevant

  755. it's just it's not

  756. the fullness

  757. of what he's

  758. talking about here.

  759. The fullness

  760. of the faith

  761. that works

  762. is repentance

  763. it's fruitfulness

  764. in the faith

  765. it's trust

  766. in God's word

  767. and yes

  768. it's also

  769. goodness

  770. and love

  771. for others.

  772. Thus Jesus said

  773. just as you can

  774. know a tree

  775. by its fruit

  776. you can identify

  777. an apple tree

  778. by the fact

  779. that it grows

  780. apples

  781. is Jesus'

  782. point.

  783. So you can

  784. identify a true

  785. Christian

  786. by the works

  787. of righteousness

  788. that flow

  789. out of

  790. in particular

  791. their personal

  792. faith in Jesus

  793. Christ.

  794. Not works

  795. of righteousness

  796. that are alone

  797. but works

  798. of righteousness

  799. that specifically

  800. are the overflow

  801. of their faith

  802. in Christ.

  803. That's the works

  804. of faith.

  805. Second

  806. we have the labor

  807. of love.

  808. The labor

  809. of love.

  810. Surely you've

  811. heard this statement

  812. before perhaps

  813. you've used it

  814. before.

  815. We've long used

  816. the phrase

  817. in English

  818. to refer to

  819. voluntarily

  820. taking on

  821. a task

  822. for pleasure

  823. rather than

  824. reward

  825. or payment.

  826. That's a labor

  827. of love

  828. isn't it?

  829. It is out

  830. of love

  831. for the thing

  832. itself

  833. or love

  834. for those

  835. that will

  836. benefit

  837. that one

  838. enters in

  839. to toil

  840. and hardship

  841. and labor.

  842. Many of you

  843. know my dad.

  844. Dad has been

  845. here even

  846. recently.

  847. He was here

  848. just a month

  849. ago to preach.

  850. If you spent

  851. more than 20

  852. seconds with my

  853. dad on that

  854. Sunday when he

  855. was here

  856. then you probably

  857. know that my

  858. dad's current

  859. labor of love

  860. is restoring

  861. cast iron

  862. skillets.

  863. The reason

  864. you know that

  865. is because he

  866. tells everybody

  867. about it.

  868. He is as much

  869. an evangelist

  870. for his cast

  871. iron restoration

  872. as he is

  873. for the Lord

  874. Jesus Christ

  875. at this point

  876. in his life.

  877. If you were

  878. to walk

  879. into my

  880. parents'

  881. kitchen today

  882. there are

  883. dozens

  884. that is not

  885. an exaggeration

  886. is it Julie?

  887. There are

  888. dozens

  889. dozens

  890. of

  891. remarkably

  892. restored

  893. cast iron

  894. skillets

  895. and they are

  896. on display

  897. they are just

  898. there.

  899. He has got

  900. these racks

  901. of them

  902. and they are

  903. on the walls

  904. and he cooks

  905. with some of

  906. them.

  907. Most of them

  908. they just sit

  909. there.

  910. He loves to

  911. go to yard

  912. sales and he

  913. gets on

  914. Facebook

  915. marketplace.

  916. He has a

  917. spot at the

  918. police station

  919. in Gastonia

  920. where he goes

  921. and he meets

  922. people on

  923. Facebook and

  924. they exchange

  925. their cast

  926. iron skillets

  927. and he takes

  928. them home and

  929. he spends days.

  930. He has got

  931. this makeshift

  932. machine that

  933. he has built

  934. that he has

  935. put in his

  936. garage and

  937. he doesn't

  938. sell them.

  939. It is not a

  940. side hustle.

  941. He does not

  942. have his own

  943. Facebook

  944. marketplace page

  945. where he puts

  946. them back on

  947. there and tries

  948. to make money.

  949. They just sit

  950. there and he

  951. gives them

  952. away.

  953. The girls

  954. each have

  955. like two and

  956. he gives

  957. them away to

  958. people.

  959. What is that?

  960. It is a

  961. labor of love.

  962. It is work

  963. to do it.

  964. It is work

  965. to find them.

  966. It is work

  967. to restore

  968. them.

  969. It is work

  970. to make it

  971. all and he

  972. gets joy

  973. out of the

  974. labor because

  975. he loves the

  976. thing itself

  977. and he loves

  978. the people

  979. that he gets

  980. to give the

  981. things to.

  982. But there is

  983. no reward for

  984. him.

  985. It is a labor

  986. of love

  987. isn't it?

  988. In the case

  989. of this text

  990. it is unmitigated

  991. love for Christ

  992. and Christ's

  993. people that

  994. motivates the

  995. toilsome task

  996. of Christian

  997. service and

  998. discipleship.

  999. we just

  1000. covenanted

  1001. with three

  1002. Christians

  1003. in membership

  1004. in our

  1005. church.

  1006. A labor

  1007. of love

  1008. would be

  1009. to actually

  1010. take the

  1011. responsibility

  1012. in a practical

  1013. way for their

  1014. discipleship the

  1015. way that we

  1016. have just

  1017. said and

  1018. promised that

  1019. we would.

  1020. Meaningful

  1021. membership and

  1022. discipleship and

  1023. service to one

  1024. another through the

  1025. church is a

  1026. labor.

  1027. It is a

  1028. toil.

  1029. it is a

  1030. hardship.

  1031. It is not

  1032. easy.

  1033. It leaves you

  1034. vulnerable.

  1035. And yet

  1036. out of love

  1037. for Christ

  1038. and out of

  1039. love for his

  1040. people we

  1041. are to eagerly

  1042. and joyfully

  1043. enter into

  1044. that labor.

  1045. I heard

  1046. someone say

  1047. this week

  1048. the church

  1049. is where

  1050. it's none

  1051. of your

  1052. business

  1053. goes to

  1054. die.

  1055. Why?

  1056. Because it

  1057. is our

  1058. love for

  1059. one another

  1060. that drives

  1061. our service

  1062. to one

  1063. another and

  1064. essential to

  1065. our service

  1066. to one

  1067. another is

  1068. the continual

  1069. discipleship

  1070. correction

  1071. maybe and

  1072. teaching of

  1073. the gospel and

  1074. of what God

  1075. has asked of

  1076. us to be.

  1077. That is our

  1078. purpose with

  1079. one another.

  1080. We don't just

  1081. meet together on

  1082. Sundays to have

  1083. a worship

  1084. service.

  1085. You ought to

  1086. be with one

  1087. another throughout

  1088. the week for

  1089. the purpose of

  1090. Christian love

  1091. and discipleship.

  1092. Jesus himself

  1093. said that it

  1094. is our love

  1095. for one another

  1096. that will testify

  1097. to the world

  1098. that we belong

  1099. to him.

  1100. He said it in

  1101. John 13

    John 13:34

  1102. verse 34

  1103. a new commandment

  1104. I give to you

  1105. that you love

  1106. one another

  1107. just as I have

  1108. loved you

  1109. that's the

  1110. qualifier.

  1111. He says in

  1112. the way that I

  1113. have loved you

  1114. that is the

  1115. way that

  1116. Christians are

  1117. to love

  1118. one another.

  1119. by this all

  1120. people will

  1121. know that you

  1122. are my

  1123. disciples if you

  1124. have love for

  1125. one another.

  1126. There we get it

  1127. again from the

  1128. very mouth of

  1129. Jesus.

  1130. He says what is

  1131. the essence of

  1132. a true Christian?

  1133. Well it is someone

  1134. who bears the

  1135. love of Christ

  1136. for others

  1137. especially other

  1138. Christians and

  1139. that's how the

  1140. world will know.

  1141. It is an

  1142. essential virtue

  1143. that belongs to

  1144. those who are

  1145. truly in Christ.

  1146. nothing is more

  1147. laborsome than

  1148. love.

  1149. Nothing is.

  1150. Love is not

  1151. merely a feeling.

  1152. I'm tempted to

  1153. sing a song

  1154. and I won't do

  1155. it.

  1156. Hooked on a

  1157. feeling.

  1158. That's not what

  1159. we're talking

  1160. about here.

  1161. Don't tell my

  1162. mom I did

  1163. that.

  1164. love isn't

  1165. something you

  1166. can fall into

  1167. or fall out

  1168. of.

  1169. It doesn't

  1170. actually work

  1171. that way.

  1172. Love is a

  1173. relational

  1174. commitment at

  1175. its heart.

  1176. Love calls us

  1177. to sacrifice

  1178. self for the

  1179. good of someone

  1180. else.

  1181. Isn't that what

  1182. Jesus means when

  1183. he tells his

  1184. disciples in

  1185. John 13 in

  1186. the way that I

  1187. have loved you

  1188. and by the

  1189. way I'm

  1190. about to go

  1191. to the

  1192. cross for

  1193. you in the

  1194. way that I

  1195. have loved

  1196. you.

  1197. That's how you

  1198. are to love

  1199. one another.

  1200. Isn't that what

  1201. he says to

  1202. husbands in

  1203. Ephesians chapter

  1204. five?

  1205. Husbands love

  1206. your wives as

  1207. Christ loved the

  1208. church and gave

  1209. himself for it.

  1210. love.

  1211. The only way to

  1212. know that kind

  1213. of love to

  1214. the fullest

  1215. extent in

  1216. God's common

  1217. grace we get to

  1218. experience a touch

  1219. of this but the

  1220. only way to

  1221. really know it in

  1222. its fullest extent

  1223. is to set your

  1224. gaze on the

  1225. person and work

  1226. of Jesus Christ.

  1227. Romans chapter

  1228. five verses six

  1229. through eight tell

  1230. us that plainly.

  1231. While we were

  1232. still weak at the

  1233. right time Christ

  1234. died for the

  1235. ungodly.

  1236. And then Paul

  1237. says for one will

  1238. scarcely die for a

  1239. righteous person.

  1240. If you think

  1241. somebody's a pretty

  1242. good guy yeah you

  1243. might offer your

  1244. life for them.

  1245. Perhaps for a good

  1246. person one would

  1247. even dare to die.

  1248. But God shows his

  1249. love for us in

  1250. that while we were

  1251. still sinners Christ

  1252. died for us.

  1253. While we were still

  1254. sinners that's not

  1255. speaking of a past

  1256. thing that's thinking

  1257. of a present thing.

  1258. In that moment we

1259. are his enemy and we

  1260. are acting as his

  1261. enemy and yet he

  1262. gives himself to us

  1263. anyways.

  1264. That is the nature

  1265. of God's love.

  1266. It is the supreme

  1267. love of Christ for

  1268. sinners that then

  1269. motivates Christians'

  1270. love for one

  1271. another.

  1272. That's what Paul

  1273. means here.

  1274. There is love for

  1275. Christ that then

  1276. shows itself in a

  1277. kind of labor.

  1278. A labor in Christian

  1279. ministry for Christ

  1280. but particularly a

  1281. labor for other

  1282. Christians and

  1283. discipleship.

  1284. For even people

  1285. outside of the church

  1286. in just kindness and

  1287. love showing the love

  1288. of Christ to others

1289. in a very real sense

  1290. of that word.

  1291. Self-sacrifice.

  1292. Thirdly we see

  1293. steadfastness of hope.

  1294. Steadfastness of hope.

  1295. When the apostles wrote

  1296. hope in the New

  1297. Testament it's

  1298. important to

  1299. understand that they

  1300. intended to communicate

  1301. something different than

1302. we typically do when we

  1303. use that word today.

1304. For the apostles in the

  1305. biblical sense hope is

  1306. meant as an absolute

  1307. certainty of heart

1308. not a wishfulness about an

  1309. uncertain future.

1310. We need to understand that

  1311. appropriately here.

  1312. Otherwise steadfastness

  1313. really doesn't make

  1314. sense.

1315. It only makes sense in

  1316. the context of an

  1317. absolute certainty not

  1318. in a potential wishfulness

  1319. of something that you're

  1320. uncertain about.

1321. That will not cause you to

  1322. endure anything.

1323. But what will cause you to

  1324. endure is a certainty

1325. about what it is that you

1326. have placed your faith in.

  1327. And incidentally that's

  1328. what John Piper actually

  1329. describes hope as.

  1330. He describes it as

  1331. biblical hope being

  1332. saving faith with an

  1333. emphasis on future

  1334. fulfillment.

1335. So it is the faith of

1336. Christ and the works of

  1337. faith looking forward to

1338. the fulfillment of all of

  1339. Christ's promises.

1340. That is what the meaning of

  1341. hope here is.

1342. Let me just give you a

  1343. couple of examples of

1344. this that show you that

1345. I'm not just making this

  1346. up.

  1347. Look at Philippians chapter

  1348. one in verse 20.

1349. This might be on the

  1350. screen for you.

  1351. Paul says to the

  1352. Philippians, it is my

  1353. eager expectation and hope

1354. hope that I will not be

  1355. ashamed but that with

  1356. full courage now as

  1357. always Christ will be

  1358. honored in my body

1359. whether by life or by

  1360. death.

  1361. Now what's happening

  1362. there?

  1363. Paul was facing his

  1364. potential martyrdom in

  1365. Rome.

1366. He was under house arrest

1367. at the moment and he

  1368. was uncertain about

1369. whether or not he was

1370. about to be beheaded or

1371. turns out that he wasn't

  1372. martyred at that

  1373. particular moment.

1374. That would come later in

  1375. his life.

1376. But he didn't know that

  1377. at this point.

1378. So he's writing to the

  1379. Philippians and he's

1380. talking about what is on

1381. his heart and what's in

1382. his mind in relation to

  1383. this potential death.

1384. And what is it that he

  1385. says that he would

  1386. indeed remain faithful to

  1387. the end.

  1388. Why?

  1389. Because he was absolutely

  1390. certain of the gospel

  1391. message he had been

  1392. proclaiming which had

1393. landed him in such a

  1394. situation.

  1395. It wasn't his wish.

1396. He spoke of it as his

  1397. eager expectation.

  1398. expectation.

  1399. That's the sense of

  1400. hope.

1401. Let me give you just one

1402. more and this is all over

1403. the New Testament but let

1404. me just give you one more.

1405. In Acts chapter 26 and

    Acts 26 chapter mention

1406. verse 6 we see of Paul

1407. and now I stand here.

1408. This is he saying as he's

  1409. on trial.

1410. Now I stand here on trial

1411. because of my hope in the

1412. promise made by God to

  1413. our fathers.

  1414. So he's referencing the

  1415. gospel here and he's

1416. standing there on trial he

1417. says because of his hope in

  1418. that gospel message.

1419. Paul wasn't on trial because

1420. he wished for the gospel to

  1421. be true.

  1422. Nobody in Rome was

  1423. threatened by Paul's

  1424. wishfulness.

  1425. What they were threatened

  1426. by was Paul's certainty

1427. which was revealed in his

  1428. gospel preaching.

1429. And that's what led him to

  1430. faithfully proclaim the

1431. gospel at the risk of his

  1432. own life.

1433. That's the kind of hope that

  1434. we're talking about here.

1435. So when we get back to

  1436. 1 Thessalonians 1 3 we see

1437. that the hope here is not a

  1438. wishfulness.

1439. It is a certainty that exists

  1440. in the Thessalonian believers.

1441. So when Paul and Silas and

1442. Timothy write to the Christians

1443. there and of their hope they're

  1444. referring to their absolute

1445. certainty of heart regarding the

1446. truth of Jesus Christ, his

  1447. resurrection, and his return.

1448. Now why would Paul do that?

1449. Why would he find it necessary to

1450. write of their steadfastness of

  1451. hope?

1452. Well as we learned last week

1453. this church was under severe

  1454. persecution from its very

  1455. inception.

1456. The reality of this persecution

1457. that looms large over this

  1458. entire letter.

1459. So severe was it that Paul was

  1460. concerned in chapter 3 that we'll

1461. eventually get to, Paul was

  1462. concerned whether they would

1463. continue in the faith at all or if

1464. they would just abandon it all

1465. together because of the pressure of

  1466. it.

  1467. Yet despite their circumstances,

1468. the church of the Thessalonians

  1469. remained steadfast.

  1470. They endured.

  1471. Why?

1472. Because their hope in Christ

  1473. produced such steadfastness.

1474. Their certainty of the gospel

  1475. caused them to persevere.

  1476. They patiently endure the

  1477. suffering with firm expectation

1478. that what Christ began at his

1479. resurrection he will complete at

  1480. his return.

1481. All Christian hope thus rests in

  1482. the historic bodily resurrection

1483. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

1484. And it is as a result of their

1485. hope in the resurrection that they

1486. had an eager and firm hope in

  1487. Christ's return.

  1488. Three essential virtues for

  1489. Christianity.

1490. Now lest we think that we

1491. accomplish all of this on our own,

1492. it will be necessary for us to

1493. finish by looking at verse 2.

1494. So look at it with me.

1495. Before focusing in on the triad,

  1496. Paul says,

1497. we give thanks to God

1498. always for all of you,

  1499. constantly mentioning you

  1500. in our prayers.

1501. What do we find here in verse 2?

1502. We find God's work of grace in our

  1503. faith, love, and hope.

1504. What's most noteworthy about the

1505. thanksgiving here is that it was

1506. offered in the context of prayer.

1507. It wasn't just occasional prayer,

  1508. continual prayer.

1509. They were thankful for the

  1510. Thessalonians, but their

1511. thanksgiving was not directed to

  1512. the Thessalonians.

  1513. Did you notice that?

1514. In fact, they explicitly say,

1515. we give thanks to God

  1516. for you.

1517. Now, I want you to meditate on that.

1518. Let that sink into your mind.

1519. The subject of their thanksgiving

1520. is the actions performed by the

  1521. Thessalonians.

  1522. That's verse 3.

1523. But the object of their

  1524. thanksgiving is God.

  1525. Now, that's strange.

1526. If I were to give you a gift today,

1527. no doubt you would, in response,

1528. turn and say thank you.

1529. But what if instead of thanking me

1530. for the gift that I purchased and

1531. wrapped and handed over to you,

1532. you turned to Josh Francis and you

1533. said, oh my goodness, Josh,

1534. thank you for this gift that Jared

  1535. gave me.

  1536. That's weird, right?

  1537. You wouldn't do that.

1538. Why is it that Paul does it then?

1539. Paul and his team were immensely

  1540. thankful for the Thessalonians'

  1541. actions.

1542. But they understood God to be the

1543. definitive cause of those actions.

1544. Therefore, all of their gratitude

1545. was directed to the Lord.

  1546. Everything happening through the

1547. church of the Thessalonians was a

  1548. work of grace.

1549. And whether thinking of their

  1550. radical conversion or their

  1551. exemplary perseverance of faith,

1552. Paul understood that it was all the

1553. result of God's gracious work in the

1554. hearts of those young Christians.

1555. And the same goes for you and me.

1556. It is no different for us.

1557. The truth is that every conversion to

  1558. Christ is a miracle of God's

  1559. sovereign grace.

  1560. It is a miracle.

1561. You wonder if miracles still happen

  1562. today.

  1563. Look around.

1564. Listen to the three testimonies of

  1565. conversion.

1566. That doesn't happen because Kathy and

1567. Sarah Lynn and Todd just decided, you

  1568. know what?

1569. We figured it out and we're going to go

  1570. with it.

1571. No, that's not how it works.

1572. No, God is active in that.

1573. We're so lost in our sins, dead in

1574. them, according to Ephesians chapter

1575. two and verse one, that the only

1576. possible way for our hearts to

1577. repent and turn to Christ is if God

1578. himself does a miracle of

1579. resurrection whereby he brings a

1580. dead soul to life in Christ.

1581. Christ, it is a work of grace.

1582. The same goes for our spiritual

1583. maturity, for our perseverance of

  1584. faith.

1585. It is all a work of grace.

1586. Consider Ephesians chapter two, verses

  1587. eight through ten.

1588. For by grace you have been saved

  1589. through faith.

1590. And this is not your own doing.

  1591. It's a gift of God.

1592. It's not a result of works so that no

  1593. one may boast.

1594. And then he continues even beyond the

  1595. conversion.

  1596. We are his workmanship.

  1597. What does that mean?

1598. It means that even after we come to

1599. Christ in faith, God is still doing a

  1600. building work.

  1601. We are a work.

1602. There was a song we sang when I was a

  1603. kid.

1604. He's still working on me to make me what

  1605. I ought to be.

1606. It took him just a week to make the

1607. moon and the stars, the sun and the

1608. earth and Jupiter and Mars.

1609. How loving and faithful he must be.

1610. He's still working on me.

  1611. You know that song?

1612. You know what we learn in that song

  1613. as kids?

1614. That there is a work that God is

  1615. doing.

1616. We are cooperating with him in that

  1617. work to be sure.

1618. But this is his work.

  1619. We are his workmanship.

  1620. We are created.

  1621. It's important.

  1622. You can't create yourself.

1623. Created in Christ Jesus for the purpose

1624. of good works, which God prepared

1625. beforehand that we should walk in them.

1626. This is a work of grace, loved ones.

1627. what does this mean for us in this text well why does it matter that we acknowledge that paul

1628. sees these virtues and then he thanks god for them if nothing else it's a reminder that all

1629. of our praise belongs to god alone that's what he says in ephesians 2 so that no man may boast

1630. god is the definitive cause of anything good that is in us

1631. he awakens our hearts to trust in christ he supplies us with his spirit so that we might

1632. grow in faithfulness he will complete that work at christ's return finally delivering us from sin

1633. and sorrow that's the hope we owe everything to the gracious work of god he alone is worthy of our

1634. praise and it is to him that we must ultimately direct our thanksgiving let me finish with a question

1635. i made an argument today and you may disagree with the argument

1636. but the argument comes from the scripture itself so according to the word of god according

1637. to what is said by god in the scriptures are you a true christian

1638. is your faith in christ is your love for christ is your hope in christ

1639. prove it how well that faith will produce certain works works of righteousness and that love will

1640. produce a certain labor a labor of christian love for the lord and for others and that hope will

1641. produce a kind of endurance that will persevere through the darkness through the temptation through

1642. the struggle and through the hardships that we face not because we just got it all together but because god

1643. is gracious to us well how does god do this work it sounds a lot like i can't do anything about it

1644. as sarah lynn said in her testimony i just thought that some were in and some were out and i just happen to be in the out category and

1645. it's a bit of a mystery isn't it until we study the scriptures and we find that god does this work of grace

1646. through his word he does it through his word it is not for us to know the mystery of god's sovereign

1647. purposes what we do know is that he has revealed himself and his truth in the pages of the bible

1648. and that it is we come to the bible the sword of the spirit that god does this work of grace

1649. that's why we preach the gospel because it is through the preaching of the gospel that god does

1650. this work of grace it's why we observe the ordinances the way that we do and that we want

1651. even unbelievers to look in on those ordinances because god does his work of grace through his word

1652. that's why he can say you will be without excuse

1653. our rejection is willful isn't it that part is all of us

1654. but there is a work of grace that god does through the gospel

1655. and he calls us to respond to that gospel

1656. and if you sense that tug of heart that conviction of heart that's not you feeling bad about yourself

1657. that's god doing a work of grace

1658. so come to christ are you a true christian

1659. only christ can make you so and he offers it offers it to you freely so come and receive the rest that he provides
