  1. 1 Thessalonians chapter 2, just two verses this morning, verses 7 and 8, okay?

    1 Thessalonians 2 chapter mention

  2. But we were gentle among you like a nursing mother taking care of her own children.

  3. So being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God,

  4. but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.

  5. There's a man who attends our Wednesday morning Bible study group with the men.

  6. We call it Men's Advance on 6.30 every Wednesdays when there's not an election on Tuesday nights.

  7. Most people are there on Wednesday morning at 6.30.

  8. His name is Larry. Larry, some of you know him. You went to church with him for many years.

  9. Larry doesn't belong to our church. He belongs to another church in Huntersville,

  10. but he attends our Bible study on Wednesday mornings, and he's a wonderful Christian.

  11. He and Terry always bring an amazing amount of biblical knowledge and wisdom to our discussions,

  12. and we all kind of lean on them during those times.

  13. He's a faithful Christian. We love having him there.

  14. His church is without a pastor right now,

  15. and Larry is one of the men that's been tasked with the responsibility of trying to find the next pastor

  16. and who the Lord would have and make those connections.

  17. And some of you have been in positions like that before at other churches,

  18. and you know how daunting of a task that is.

  19. That's not an easy thing.

  20. And when you don't have a leadership structure that has a plurality of elders that can kind of shoulder that load,

  21. it falls to people in the congregation to do it, and that's a very difficult thing to do.

  22. And Larry's in one of those positions, and a few weeks ago we were chatting about that in our Bible study,

  23. and I don't think he was referring to this particular church, but maybe a church years ago in his life where he had been in a similar role,

  24. and he mentioned a survey that had been issued to the congregation,

  25. basically asking them,

  26. what are things that you care about?

  27. What do you want to see in your next pastor?

  28. And I got to thinking about that,

  29. and I thought, you know, that's an interesting question.

  30. I wonder how most Christians, the average Christian, would respond to such a survey.

  31. And so I want you to think about that.

  32. Don't answer this out loud.

  33. Just ponder it in your head.

  34. I don't need my feelings getting hurt right here at the beginning of the sermon.

  35. If I asked you to list the qualities you most want in a pastor,

  36. what would be on your list?

  37. What would headline the list?

  38. Maybe three, four, five things.

  39. Like, these are the things that matter most,

  40. the things I care about most in a pastor.

  41. Or maybe we're just thinking in discipling relationships within our church.

  42. Like, if there's going to be somebody that comes and is personally discipling me as a spiritual mentor in my life,

  43. these are the qualities that I want them to have.

  44. This is how I want them to lead me and help me.

  45. And there are so many ways we can answer that question, right?

  46. There's an abundance of good answers that we might have.

  47. Most of us would likely begin at the qualifications for a pastor in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1,

  48. and that would be exactly the right instinct to go.

  49. What is the Bible saying a pastor is supposed to be?

  50. What is the bare minimum that the scriptures say an elder qualifies a man to be an elder in a church?

  51. And that's the right instinct.

  52. That's where we would go, and maybe we would start to fashion our list that way.

  53. Other of us may think in more practical terms.

  54. We may think about things like education.

  55. You know, have they actually been trained theologically so that they're properly prepared to teach us the Bible?

  56. We might think about experience.

  57. Like, what kind of experience do they have in pastoral ministry?

  58. Are they equipped to do this work?

  59. Do they have a leadership ability?

  60. Do they have an administrative prowess?

  61. Yes.

  62. And so long as those things are ordered properly as secondary to the biblical qualifications,

  63. those are actually really good things to consider.

  64. We want to have those things on our list, don't we?

  65. Then, of course, we get to personality dynamics, which for sure are tertiary issues.

  66. But they're still going to show up on some of our list.

  67. Probably we want somebody who has a certain kind of charisma,

  68. or that might would be on some of your list.

  69. Most of what we would put on our list will rightly portray strength and aptitude.

  70. We might even come to a letter like 1 Thessalonians and look at how Paul describes himself here and think,

  71. I want whoever is discipling me to be bold, not afraid to speak the truth, even when it's unpopular to do it,

  72. even when it's unpopular for me, to me for them to do it.

  73. I want somebody who's going to be bold anyway, who's going to give me the truth.

  74. And oh, what a almost rare blessing that is to have sometimes in spiritual leadership these days.

  75. The point of this exercise, the reason I want you to think about this for this moment,

  76. isn't really to think about what would be on your list,

  77. but it's after kind of compiling that list, stepping back and observing it and thinking,

  78. what might be missing from your list?

  79. I wonder how many of us would have a description that actually matches Paul's here.

  80. Look again at verse 7.

  81. Now be real honest.

  82. How many of you in your mind, your mental mind, just a moment ago when I was asking that question,

  83. how many of you raised your hand if you had maternal affection as one of the qualities on your list?

  84. Probably none of us, right?

  85. No one probably thought a minute ago, you know, when I think of someone I want discipling me and pastoring my church,

  86. my first thought is that they look like a mom nursing her baby.

  87. And yet that's what Paul describes his ministry as, isn't it?

  88. It's quite amazing.

  89. What he describes here, it seems to us more like weakness than strength.

  90. These qualities even almost seem contradictory to some of the other things that have been displayed in his demonstration of ministry in the letter.

  91. Things like the boldness and the courage.

  92. And as we continue on in chapter 2 in a couple of weeks, we're seeing exhortation and discipline and all of these things.

  93. We think this almost seems backward.

  94. Almost seems like it doesn't fit.

  95. But I think not only are the qualities in verses 7 and 8 consistent with a right understanding of the other traits,

  96. I want to suggest actually that what's listed for us in verses 7 and 8 are the virtues that get to the very heart of what faithful gospel ministry is.

  97. Each of them is modeled perfectly and instructed explicitly by the Lord Jesus.

  98. And I don't want them to be missing in my ministry.

  99. I don't want them to be missing in our ministry to one another as a congregation that endeavors to disciple one another to be faithful to Jesus Christ.

  100. There's three of them here that I want to bring to your attention.

  101. First, I want you to see gospel ministry should be gentle.

  102. Gospel ministry should be gentle.

  103. Again, verse 7, we were gentle among you.

  104. Like a nursing mother taking care of her own children.

  105. Of course, gentleness in this verse, it's contrasting with the negative features of unfaithful ministry that are listed in verses 5 and 6.

  106. Particularly the last one.

  107. Let's just read them together.

  108. Look at verse 5.

  109. Paul says,

  110. For we never came with words of flattery, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed.

  111. God is witness.

  112. Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others.

  113. Though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ.

  114. That's the context with which he is now using this transitional word in verse 7.

  115. But that's referring back to something else.

  116. It's a negative and positive, right?

  117. The negative is, this is how we did not come to you.

  118. The positive is, but we were gentle among you, like a mother nursing her own children.

  119. Now, when we get to that last phrase in verse 6, Paul says,

  120. We could have made demands as apostles of Christ.

  121. But he's not saying that he had the right to kind of throw around his apostolic weight and just simply chose not to do that.

  122. That's not what he means.

  123. He doesn't mean that it would have been permissible for him to minister in that way,

  124. and he just felt like being a nicer guy at the time that he was in Thessalonica.

  125. That's not what he means.

  126. He meant that his unique authority as an apostle of Christ made it possible for him to justify spiritual abuse

  127. and lord over people in a demanding way.

  128. But that's not the way that he did it.

  129. He's essentially saying, look, I could have come in and I could have said, look, Christ called me to this.

  130. He personally commissioned me to do this.

  131. Now, you listen to what I say and you do what I tell you to do.

  132. He says, I didn't come in like that.

  133. I didn't minister to you like that.

  134. Instead, he was marked by the gentleness of a nursing mom.

  135. Now, I've watched my wife live this out, this illustration, with our three girls.

  136. Charlie's seven months.

  137. She's about to be eight months old now.

  138. And there's still nights when she gets up.

  139. Last night, it wasn't too bad.

  140. It was about five o'clock and it was about time to get up anyways.

  141. And so it worked out.

  142. But there's still nights where she just decides, you know, two o'clock in the morning,

  143. I think I'm just going to start screaming my head off.

  144. And she does that.

  145. And, you know, to this point, after eight months,

  146. I've never one time rolled over and looked at Julie and heard her say,

  147. you know what, this time, Jared, I'm going to teach this little brat a lesson.

  148. She hasn't done it yet.

  149. Why?

  150. Because she's gentle with her.

  151. I've watched her countless times, actually, approach our girls,

  152. even in moments of correction, when she needs to discipline them

  153. and she needs to correct them and she needs to steer them in a different way

  154. based on the decisions that they've made.

  155. I've watched her countless occasions do that,

  156. clothed in the kind of gentleness that seeks to nurture them,

  157. not to beat them down.

  158. And that's how Paul describes his demeanor toward the Thessalonian Christians.

  159. And it should describe the demeanor that we have toward one another

  160. and toward the lost world around us.

  161. Jesus is the perfect example of it.

  162. In fact, Jesus even describes himself this way in Matthew 11.

  163. Remember, when he invited people to come to him, what he said,

  164. he said,

  165. take my yoke upon you and learn from me,

  166. for I am gentle and lowly in heart.

  167. Meekness.

  168. And he says,

  169. if you will do that,

  170. what you'll find from me is rest for your soul.

  171. Rest for your soul.

  172. Now, you can't come to Jesus

  173. without acknowledging the correction

  174. and the discipline of Jesus for your sin.

  175. And yet, the thing that he says is that he's gentle

  176. and that when you come,

  177. even despite the correction and the discipline

  178. and the acknowledgement of our sin

  179. and the reality of judgment,

  180. what you find is rest.

  181. Why?

  182. Because he's gentle and lowly.

  183. It's who he is.

  184. Gentleness is a virtue that God supplies

  185. as we walk in the Spirit.

  186. We get that from Galatians chapter 5

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  187. and that famous passage about the fruits of the Spirit.

  188. We're told very explicitly,

  189. the fruit of the Spirit,

  190. the things that God does in us

  191. through the sanctifying work in his Spirit.

  192. These are the things that he supplies to us.

  193. And one of them right in the middle is gentleness.

  194. So then we would understand that text to mean

  195. that as we are faithfully walking in step with the Spirit,

  196. what will be the natural byproduct of that

  197. because of his gracious work in us

  198. is a demeanor of gentleness toward other people.

  199. Gentleness is required of those who serve as elders in the church.

  200. We can go to different places for this.

  201. I want to look at 2 Timothy chapter 2 verses 24 through 26.

    2 Timothy 2:24–26

  202. It's on the screen.

  203. You can turn there if you'd like.

  204. This is not the qualifications for a pastor.

  205. That's 1 Timothy chapter 3.

    1 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  206. In 2 Timothy chapter 2,

    2 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  207. Paul is instructing Timothy on how to deal with false teachers

  208. in the church, false doctrine in the church.

  209. And listen to what he says.

  210. He says,

  211. The Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome,

  212. but kind.

  213. Kind to everyone.

  214. Able to teach.

  215. Patiently enduring evil.

  216. That's perseverance.

  217. And then notice this.

  218. Correcting his opponents with gentleness.

  219. And here's what Paul says will happen,

  220. what might happen by God's grace,

  221. when the elders of the church serve the church,

  222. even in correction with gentleness.

  223. He says,

  224. God may perhaps grant them repentance,

  225. leading to a knowledge of the truth,

  226. and they may come to their senses

  227. and escape the snare of the devil

  228. after being captured by him to do his will.

  229. Not only is it a qualification for elders,

  230. but it's actually necessary for effective gospel ministry.

  231. You've heard people say,

  232. it's not always what you say,

  233. it's how you say it.

  234. Well, sometimes it's what you say

  235. when it comes to the gospel.

  236. Sometimes we don't even really get a chance

  237. for people to hear us

  238. because they can't get past the way that we're saying it.

  239. And Paul says,

  240. No, the Lord's servant shouldn't be that way.

  241. Correct with gentleness.

  242. Gentleness is an essential characteristic of a congregation.

  243. That is unified in the gospel

  244. and pursuing the work of Christ

  245. through mutual discipling.

  246. We studied this a few months ago

  247. in Ephesians chapter four,

  248. the first three verses.

  249. Paul says,

  250. I therefore urge you to walk in a manner

  251. worthy of the calling to which you have been called.

  252. And if you remember back to that study,

  253. what is that calling?

  254. It is the calling of Christ in the gospel

  255. that's related to our adoption into God's family.

  256. So basically the name to which we have been called

  257. to serve and to take on

  258. that has been given to us by God

  259. is God's name,

  260. that we belong to him.

  261. And Paul says,

  262. I want you to walk in a manner

  263. that is worthy of that calling.

  264. And how does he say we are to do that?

  265. With all humility and gentleness.

  266. This is the context of our relationship to one another.

  267. That as we are serving together,

  268. as we are doing life together

  269. in the context of a covenant in this local church,

  270. that the disposition with which we have toward one another

  271. in those discipling relationships

  272. is characterized by gentleness and humility,

  273. bearing with one another in love,

  274. patience, eager to maintain the unity

  275. of the spirit in the bond of peace.

  276. Gentleness is essential to that.

  277. Now some clarifications are necessary, aren't they?

  278. To be gentle doesn't mean

  279. that you avoid telling people the truth

  280. about sin and judgment.

  281. That's not what gentleness means.

  282. Gentleness doesn't forsake correction and discipline.

  283. We just quoted several verses

  284. where gentleness was paired with correction and discipline.

  285. Gentleness doesn't neglect confrontation.

  286. However, gentleness is the spirit-enabled,

  287. Christ-mimicking, God-glorifying virtue

  288. with which all of our discipling efforts

  289. are to be carried out.

  290. Whether that be in making disciples

  291. through personal evangelism

  292. or helping other Christians

  293. who have already come to Christ

  294. grow more faithful to Christ,

  295. our efforts are to be clothed with gentleness.

  296. Our demeanor, even in the most solemn moments of ministry,

  297. should be like a nursing mother

  298. tending to her child.

  299. Galatians 6.

  300. Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression,

  301. this is church discipline here.

  302. You who are spiritual

  303. should restore him in a spirit of gentleness,

  304. meekness.

  305. Now, I want you to think about that.

  306. What's the instruction?

  307. Church discipline.

  308. What is church discipline?

  309. Well, when it's carried out to the fullest extent,

  310. it includes a congregation

  311. coming around someone

  312. who is refusing to repent of sin

  313. and is dishonoring the name of Christ

  314. and showing that they may not even be a true Christian.

  315. And the congregation is saying,

  316. we must exercise discipline here

  317. as far as your membership is concerned in our church.

  318. And yet, Paul says here in Galatians 6

  319. that even when it comes to that,

  320. that a spirit of gentleness

  321. should pervade that process.

  322. That the goal there

  323. is not to hopefully rid ourselves

  324. of a pain in the neck,

  325. but the goal is to restore them

  326. to faithfulness to Christ,

  327. and that is to be done

  328. through gentleness.

  329. Now,

  330. why don't we prize gentleness

  331. the way that God does?

  332. Why is it that

  333. harshness

  334. can sometimes be the thing

  335. that brings us

  336. delight?

  337. Why is it that

  338. when we're thinking about that person

  339. that really just grades on our nerves

  340. and

  341. we never fantasize about

  342. having an opportunity

  343. when they

  344. sin against us

  345. or do something really annoying against us.

  346. We never fantasize about

  347. how we can show them love

  348. in that moment,

  349. do we?

  350. What do we do?

  351. We drive down the road

  352. and this person pops in our mind

  353. and we think,

  354. you know,

  355. I would just love one day

  356. for them to say this to me

  357. because I'd love to say this back

  358. in response.

  359. Harshness.

  360. Why do we do that?

  361. Why do we value that

  362. over the gentleness

  363. that God prizes

  364. in the scriptures?

  365. And there's only one answer for that.

  366. It's indwelling sin.

  367. God calls us to gentleness.

  368. Not only should we expect

  369. that of those who are in leadership,

  370. but we should seek

  371. to pursue it personally

  372. in the way that we interact

  373. with one another

  374. and the way that we interact

  375. with the world around us.

  376. Gospel ministry

  377. should be gentle.

  378. Number two,

  379. gospel ministry

  380. should be

  381. affectionate.

  382. Affectionate.

  383. Look again at verse eight,

  384. just the first phrase

  385. and then the last phrase.

  386. So being affectionately

  387. desirous of you

  388. and then look at the last phrase,

  389. because you had become

  390. very dear to us.

  391. affection,

  392. love,

  393. care.

  394. What is it that drives

  395. a mother to care

  396. for her child?

  397. Love.

  398. What drove Paul

  399. to faithfully minister

  400. to the Thessalonians?

  401. Love.

  402. Your gospel ministry

  403. to the world

  404. and your gospel ministry

  405. to one another

  406. in discipleship

  407. will be carried out

  408. in direct proportion

  409. to your love

  410. for others.

  411. I've heard Alistair Begg

  412. say so many times

  413. to his church in Cleveland

  414. and listening to his preaching,

  415. he'll say something

  416. to this effect,

  417. however,

  418. I do or do not meet

  419. the many expectations

  420. that you may have

  421. for me as a pastor.

  422. You'll know

  423. that I've stopped

  424. loving you

  425. the way that I should

  426. when I cease

  427. to preach to you

  428. the gospel of Jesus.

  429. And I think there's

  430. something significantly

  431. true about that statement.

  432. We minister the gospel

  433. to those we love best.

  434. Why?

  435. Because we recognize

  436. that the relationship

  437. with Christ

  438. is the supreme need

  439. of their life.

  440. That greater than anything

  441. else that they need,

  442. greater than any other longing

  443. that they have.

  444. What they need is Jesus.

  445. What they need is

  446. reconciliation with God

  447. through the cross of Christ.

  448. And those whom we love most

  449. are those whom we're

  450. most willing

  451. to care for in that way.

  452. Why did Paul preach

  453. this gospel there?

  454. Why did he do it

  455. in the midst of so much conflict?

  456. He says here,

  457. because we love you.

  458. But from where

  459. does this kind of

  460. affection arise?

  461. You see,

  462. this is the hard question,

  463. isn't it?

  464. Because it's not like

  465. we can just flip a switch

  466. in our hearts

  467. and suddenly

  468. we just like people.

  469. It doesn't work that way.

  470. We should work that way.

  471. It doesn't work that way,

  472. does it?

  473. Some of you might actually

  474. really be struggling

  475. with this particular thing.

  476. You find it difficult

  477. to feel affection

  478. for the people

  479. that God has put

  480. in your life.

  481. Maybe in relationship

  482. to your family.

  483. Maybe you just have

  484. family members

  485. who just like you,

  486. you just struggle

  487. with them so much

  488. and especially

  489. when it comes to

  490. talking about Jesus

  491. and talking about the gospel

  492. and things like that

  493. and it's just,

  494. it's becoming more

  495. and more difficult

  496. for you to feel

  497. any kind of affection

  498. for them.

  499. Maybe it's for coworkers

  500. or for other relationships

  501. that you have.

  502. Let's be honest,

  503. there's probably

  504. some people here

  505. or people that are

  506. connected to our church

  507. at some point

  508. that your struggle

  509. in discipling

  510. in this congregation

  511. is a struggle

  512. of affection

  513. for people

  514. that you feel like

  515. are difficult

  516. for you to even

  517. get along with.

  518. So how can we do this?

  519. Like how can we just

  520. love people

  521. like Paul loves people?

  522. Well if you were

  523. at Laurel last night

  524. I touched on this

  525. to some extent.

  526. Paul's love

  527. for the Thessalonians

  528. wasn't based

  529. on who they were.

  530. It wasn't based

  531. on their ethnicity.

  532. It wasn't based

  533. on gender.

  534. It wasn't based

  535. on what they could

  536. do for him.

  537. It wasn't based

  538. on personality.

  539. It wasn't based

  540. on anything about them.

  541. It was based

  542. on Christ's love.

  543. And we get that

  544. from 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  545. chapter 5

  546. when Paul says

  547. the love of Christ

  548. controls us.

  549. The older translations

  550. say constrains us.

  551. It grips me.

  552. Paul says

  553. as I think about Christ

  554. as I think about the cross

  555. as I think about his love

  556. it compels me.

  557. It grips my life

  558. so that everything

  559. that I now do

  560. it seems to be

  561. an overflow

  562. of what I've seen

  563. to be true

  564. in the Lord Jesus.

  565. It was the love

  566. of Christ

  567. on the cross

  568. that compelled him

  569. to love others.

  570. Indeed the more

  571. we gaze at Christ

  572. and his cross

  573. the more we

  574. will be compelled

  575. by his love

  576. to display

  577. his love

  578. to other people.

  579. And by the way

  580. this is exactly

  581. what he taught us.

  582. John chapter 13

    John 13 chapter mention

  583. you know the passage well.

  584. Speaking to his disciples

  585. Jesus says

  586. a new commandment

  587. I give to you

  588. that you love

  589. one another

  590. just as I have loved you.

  591. He is the example.

  592. In other words

  593. he is saying

  594. if you are trying

  595. to figure out

  596. Simon the zealot

  597. who is one of the disciples

  598. with Matthew the tax collector

  599. who were mortal enemies

  600. if you guys are trying

  601. to figure out

  602. how to love one another

  603. just stop looking

  604. at each other

  605. for a minute

  606. and just look at me.

  607. He says

  608. the way that I

  609. have loved you

  610. that is how you need

  611. to love one another.

  612. And then he makes

  613. this really

  614. really bold statement

  615. Jesus says

  616. this is the way

  617. that the world

  618. will know

  619. that you are

  620. my disciples.

  621. This is the way

  622. that they will know

  623. that you belong to me

  624. is when you love

  625. one another.

  626. That's amazing

  627. isn't it?

  628. Jesus says

  629. your love

  630. isn't to be based

  631. on what you think

  632. about each other

  633. your love is to be based

  634. on what you think

  635. about me

  636. and what I think

  637. about you.

  638. Loved ones.

  639. I implore you

  640. be so immersed

  641. in Christ's love

  642. and in the gospel

  643. that you cannot help

  644. but look at one another

  645. and say

  646. you are so very dear

  647. to me

  648. I love you.

  649. Gospel ministry

  650. should be affectionate.

  651. Thirdly

  652. gospel ministry

  653. should be self-sacrificing.

  654. self-sacrificing.

  655. Self-sacrificing.

  656. Look again

  657. at the middle portion

  658. of verse 8.

  659. We were ready

  660. to share with you

  661. not only the gospel

  662. of God

  663. but also

  664. our own

  665. selves.

  666. Our own selves.

  667. John Piper

  668. called this

  669. mutual

  670. soul sharing.

  671. Mutual soul sharing.

  672. And it is the

  673. essence

  674. of congregational

  675. life

  676. as it's described

  677. in the New Testament.

  678. All those

  679. one another commands

  680. that we

  681. see in the Bible.

  682. There is a

  683. depth

  684. of

  685. relational

  686. commitment

  687. that is implicit

  688. in the scriptures

  689. and explicit

  690. in the scriptures.

  691. It has to do

  692. with the teaching

  693. about the church

  694. that

  695. few people

  696. seem ready

  697. to acknowledge

  698. or pursue.

  699. I read this

  700. great statement

  701. recently.

  702. I think it was

  703. Matt Smathers

  704. that said it

  705. that the church

  706. is where

  707. quote

  708. it's none of

  709. your business

  710. goes to die.

  711. There is this

  712. relational

  713. commitment

  714. that is implicit

  715. and explicit

  716. in the scriptures

  717. teaching about

  718. the nature

  719. of the church

  720. that involves

  721. this intentional

  722. affectionate

  723. gentle

  724. self

  725. sacrificing

  726. relational

  727. commitment

  728. to the people

  729. that you have

  730. chosen to covenant

  731. with

  732. as a local

  733. church.

  734. But it is

  735. this self

  736. sacrificing

  737. commitment

  738. like that

  739. of a nursing

  740. mother

  741. Paul underscores

  742. as the

  743. central

  744. to his gospel

  745. ministry here.

  746. Now it's

  747. important to

  748. note that

  749. Paul wasn't

  750. adding something

  751. to suggest

  752. that gospel

  753. proclamation

  754. is in and of

  755. itself

  756. insufficient.

  757. That's not

  758. what he's

  759. saying.

  760. He's not

  761. saying that

  762. on one hand

  763. we have this

  764. piece of our

  765. ministry that

  766. involves gospel

  767. proclamation

  768. and then on

  769. the other hand

  770. we have this

  771. kind of relational

  772. thing where we

  773. just like to

  774. really love on

  775. people and

  776. we're hoping

  777. that between

  778. those two

  779. things God

  780. might use it.

  781. No it's

  782. the gospel

  783. is the power

  784. of God

  785. unto salvation

  786. for all

  787. who believe.

  788. We know

  789. that.

  790. Paul believed

  791. that.

  792. What he means

  793. here is he's

  794. saying that

  795. the way

  796. that we

  797. shared the

  798. gospel of

  799. God with

  800. you was

  801. this way.

  802. He's

  803. emphasizing that

  804. his ministry

  805. to them

  806. wasn't cold

  807. or distant.

  808. It was

  809. actually up

  810. close.

  811. It was

  812. warm.

  813. It was

  814. self-sacrificing

  815. soul care.

  816. In other

  817. words self-sacrifice

  818. is the

  819. manner with

  820. which he

  821. shared the

  822. gospel with

  823. them.

  824. That's the

  825. way he

  826. shared the

  827. gospel.

  828. By giving

  829. of his

  830. own self

  831. to these

  832. people in

  833. Thessalonica.

  834. And we

  835. see it all

  836. through what

  837. we've studied

  838. so far in

  839. the letter.

  840. He sacrificed

  841. his time

  842. and his

  843. privacy

  844. living and

  845. ministering

  846. quote among

  847. them.

  848. We see it in

  849. chapter 1

  850. and verse 5.

  851. Our gospel

  852. came to you

  853. not only in

  854. word but in

  855. the power of

  856. the spirit

  857. with full

  858. conviction.

  859. You know

  860. what kind

  861. of men we

  862. proved to

  863. be among

  864. you for

  865. your sake.

  866. In other

  867. words we

  868. lived and

  869. ministered.

  870. We were

  871. with you.

  872. We were

  873. with you.

  874. And we

  875. were with

  876. you in

  877. such a

  878. way that

  879. you could

  880. truly observe

  881. our lives

  882. and you

  883. know us.

  884. You know

  885. about the

  886. nature of

  887. our ministry.

  888. And then he

  889. says that

  890. again here

  891. in verse

  892. 7.

  893. We were

  894. gentle among

  895. you in the

  896. midst of you.

  897. sacrificing his

  898. time.

  899. Sacrificing his

  900. privacy in

  901. order that he

  902. might share the

  903. gospel with

  904. them and

  905. encourage them

  906. in the truth

  907. of the gospel

  908. even after they

  909. came to

  910. faith.

  911. He sacrificed

  912. his energy.

  913. If you follow

  914. along in

  915. verse 9

  916. you'll see

  917. that he

  918. reminds them

  919. that he

  920. worked night

  921. and day

  922. as a tent

  923. maker to

  924. finance his

  925. ministry so

  926. as not to be

  927. a burden to

  928. the people

  929. or cast

  930. doubt on

  931. the genuineness

  932. of his

  933. ministry.

  934. Sacrificed

  935. time.

  936. Sacrificed

  937. privacy.

  938. He

  939. sacrificed

  940. energy.

  941. He didn't

  942. just give

  943. them a

  944. sermon.

  945. He gave

  946. them all

  947. of himself

  948. in order

  949. that he

  950. might build

  951. them up

  952. in Christ.

  953. As we

  954. study the

  955. rest of

  956. the New

  957. Testament

  958. we find

  959. that the

  960. Thessalonians

  961. imitated

  962. him.

  963. we see

  964. that because

  965. of the way

  966. that they

  967. lived out

  968. their own

  969. Christian

  970. faith.

  971. In 2

    2 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  972. Corinthians

  973. chapter 8

  974. Paul reflects

  975. on the

  976. Macedonian

  977. churches

  978. and their

  979. generosity.

  980. He says

  981. for they

  982. gave according

  983. to their

  984. means and

  985. as I can

  986. testify and

  987. beyond their

  988. means of

  989. their own

  990. accord.

  991. They were

  992. begging us

  993. earnestly for

  994. the favor of

  995. taking part in

  996. the relief of

  997. the saints.

  998. And this

  999. not as we

  1000. expected but

  1001. they gave

  1002. themselves

  1003. first to

  1004. the Lord

  1005. and then

  1006. by the

  1007. will of

  1008. God they

  1009. gave of

  1010. themselves

  1011. to us.

  1012. Do you

  1013. see?

  1014. Paul comes

  1015. in mimicking

  1016. Jesus and

  1017. he gives all

  1018. of himself to

  1019. these people

  1020. in Thessalonica

  1021. and that

  1022. catches fire in

  1023. Thessalonica

  1024. through the

  1025. power of the

  1026. gospel so

  1027. that the

  1028. Thessalonicans

  1029. then turn

  1030. around these

  1031. Christians and

  1032. they begin to

  1033. give of

  1034. themselves to

  1035. people who are

  1036. in ministry

  1037. giving of

  1038. themselves to

  1039. those who are

  1040. struggling in

  1041. other places in

  1042. their generosity.

  1043. This isn't only

  1044. to be true of

  1045. elders in the

  1046. church.

  1047. This must be

  1048. true of all

  1049. of us.

  1050. This giving of

  1051. ourselves to

  1052. one another.

  1053. This is the

  1054. essence of

  1055. congregational

  1056. life in the

  1057. Bible.

  1058. We all expect

  1059. people to be

  1060. willing to

  1061. sacrifice.

  1062. to meet our

  1063. needs to some

  1064. extent.

  1065. How many of

  1066. us are willing

  1067. to sacrifice for

  1068. the spiritual

  1069. benefit of

  1070. others?

  1071. Now I know

  1072. you well enough

  1073. to know that

  1074. many of you

  1075. are very

  1076. willing.

  1077. You're prepared.

  1078. You want to

  1079. do this.

  1080. This is not a

  1081. correction this

  1082. morning.

  1083. It's just an

  1084. edification.

  1085. But it's worth

  1086. the analysis,

  1087. isn't it?

  1088. Are you willing

  1089. to sacrifice

  1090. some time to

  1091. help someone

  1092. else know and

  1093. follow Jesus?

  1094. Whether that's

  1095. in an evangelistic

  1096. way,

  1097. intentionally

  1098. developing a

  1099. relationship with

  1100. an unbeliever,

  1101. in order that you

  1102. might be able to

  1103. more faithfully

  1104. share the gospel

  1105. with them,

  1106. see them come to

  1107. Christ?

  1108. Are you willing

  1109. to sacrifice some

  1110. time just to

  1111. kind of put your

  1112. arm around that

  1113. other lady in our

  1114. church that may be

  1115. a struggler,

  1116. maybe seems to be

  1117. drifting and just

  1118. say, hey, can we

  1119. just spend some

  1120. time together?

  1121. Love on them,

  1122. encourage them,

  1123. maybe correct them

  1124. with gentleness if

  1125. that's what's

  1126. necessary.

  1127. What about this?

  1128. Are you willing to

  1129. sacrifice your pride

  1130. when you're the one

  1131. that that other

  1132. person in the church

  1133. is coming and

  1134. kind of putting

  1135. their arm around

  1136. and saying, hey,

  1137. why don't we go

  1138. to coffee this

  1139. week?

  1140. Are you willing to

  1141. sacrifice your time

  1142. for correction when

  1143. you're the one that

  1144. needs to receive it?

  1145. It's part of this.

  1146. It's this vulnerability.

  1147. It's this affection.

  1148. It's this self-sacrifice

1149. for the good of others

1150. and for the glory of

  1151. Christ in our lives.

  1152. Are you willing to

  1153. lay aside things that

1154. you care about if it

  1155. means being faithful

  1156. to worship on Sunday?

1157. I mean, of course you

  1158. are.

  1159. Look at you.

  1160. You're here.

  1161. Are you willing to

  1162. sacrifice things that

  1163. you care about in

  1164. order to share the

  1165. gospel?

  1166. Are you willing to

  1167. sacrifice things that

  1168. you really care about

  1169. to fund a mission

  1170. work or encourage a

  1171. struggling Christian?

1172. This is the kind of

  1173. virtue that we should

  1174. pursue because it's

  1175. exactly the virtue that

  1176. Jesus modeled for us.

  1177. It's this humility that

  1178. Shane mentioned in the

  1179. Sunday school class this

  1180. morning.

  1181. Humility towards others.

1182. Isn't that what we find

  1183. in Philippians 2?

1184. Paul says, let each one

1185. of you look not only on

  1186. his own interest.

1187. Oh, it's so easy to do

  1188. that, isn't it?

1189. That's kind of our default

  1190. setting, right?

  1191. We're just constantly,

  1192. we've got like tunnel

  1193. vision.

  1194. It's not always that we're

  1195. trying to ignore other

  1196. people.

  1197. It's just we've got tunnel

  1198. vision.

1199. Like this is all the

  1200. things that I've got

1201. going on in my life.

1202. These are all the needs

  1203. that I have, that I need

  1204. to be met.

1205. These are all the interests

1206. that I have in order for

1207. my life to work and for

1208. my growth to work out just

1209. the way that I want it

  1210. to.

1211. And we start to, maybe

  1212. even inadvertently, stop

  1213. to think, start, stop

  1214. thinking about other

  1215. people around us.

1216. And Paul says, let each

1217. of you not only think

1218. of his own interest, but

  1219. on the interest of

  1220. others.

  1221. Have this mind among

  1222. yourselves, and here it

1223. is, which was in Christ

  1224. Jesus.

  1225. How did Jesus display

  1226. this?

1227. In his humiliation, in his

  1228. condescension, who though

1229. being in the form of God

1230. did not count equality with

1231. God a thing to be grasped.

1232. That is the benefits of

1233. being with the Father in

  1234. heaven, the benefits of

1235. being the second person of

  1236. the divine Godhead.

1237. They were not so much him

1238. that he was unwilling to

1239. put those things aside in

1240. order to condescend to us

1241. and become a man in order

  1242. to save our souls.

  1243. That's what Paul says.

1244. He's in the form of God.

  1245. He didn't count equality

1246. with God a thing to be

1247. grasped to hold on to at

1248. all costs, but he emptied

1249. himself by taking the form

1250. of a servant, being born in

1251. the likeness of men, and

1252. being found in human form.

  1253. He humbled himself and

  1254. became obedient to the

1255. point of death, even death

  1256. on a cross.

1257. This is the model that

  1258. Christ has given us.

  1259. Self-sacrifice for the

  1260. good of others.

1261. Now these are not the only

  1262. ways to describe faithful

1263. gospel ministry, but I do

1264. think it's true that we

  1265. cannot call our ministry

  1266. faithful without these three

  1267. virtues.

1268. It's not the only thing.

  1269. There's more.

1270. But we can't take these

1271. things away and then still

  1272. consider ourselves to be

  1273. faithful in the ministries

1274. that God has given us.

1275. As we've seen, the key to

  1276. embracing and possessing

1277. them is to know and believe

1278. and meditate on the gospel

  1279. of Jesus.

1280. We talk about this all the

1281. time that we preach the

  1282. gospel to ourselves every

  1283. day.

1284. We live in light of the

  1285. gospel in every moment.

1286. Because the more we gaze at

1287. Jesus, the more the spirit

1288. works in us to fashion us

  1289. into his likeness.

1290. And if we are becoming like

1291. Jesus as his people, our

  1292. lives will inevitably be

  1293. marked by gentleness,

  1294. affection, self-sacrifice.
