  1. Luke's Gospel, chapter 19, and we'll begin reading at verse number 11.

  2. I've entitled the message, Investing the Gospel.

  3. Investing the Gospel.

  4. Let's look at this together from God's Word, Luke 19 and 11.

  5. The Bible says,

  6. He said,

  7. The first came before him, saying,

  8. The second came, saying,

  9. And he said to him,

  10. Then another came, saying,

  11. Slaughter them before me.

  12. I want to ask you a question this morning.

  13. How's your gospel investments going?

  14. How's your gospel investments going?

  15. Your first core as a church, as we just rehearsed that together,

  16. is gospel focused.

  17. Lakeside Bible Church is gospel focused.

  18. That's your desire, your aim, a core conviction of who you are.

  19. Gospel focused.

  20. So in light of that,

  21. how's your gospel investments going?

  22. This is the question for our consideration today.

  23. In what ways are you investing the gospel right now with your life?

  24. You might find in your Bible above this paragraph in Luke 19,

  25. a header such as the parable of money usage.

  26. Some translations say the parable of the 10 pounds,

  27. or as it is in my Bible, the parable of 10 minas.

  28. Now that header in and of itself,

  29. which is not scripture, by the way,

  30. might cause you to think that this is a simple lesson on financial stewardship.

  31. But that's not it at all.

  32. Jesus is using a parable involving financial investments

  33. as a simile for a much more significant investment

  34. than just dollars and cents or pounds and minus.

  35. This is about your life actively investing the gospel

  36. or as we look at it collectively and corporately as a church this morning.

  37. This text is about Lakeside actively investing the gospel.

  38. For five years now,

  39. you have existed in this community

  40. on the Lakeside of Charlotte,

  41. assembling together as a church

  42. to preach the Bible

  43. and to invest the gospel

  44. in every home in this area.

  45. My challenge to you today

  46. is to encourage you to continue investing the gospel.

  47. That for the next few months

  48. and the next year

  49. and the next five years

  50. and as the Lord continues to use this congregation,

  51. I not only want you to look back

  52. and celebrate what God has done in five years,

  53. I want you to look forward and say,

  54. let's increase our investments.

  55. Let's be more active than ever investing the gospel.

  56. Let's take a look at our strategies

  57. and evaluate if our strategies

  58. are effectively being used to invest the gospel

  59. here where we are

  60. and what God wants us to do in the community.

  61. That's what this parable is ultimately about.

  62. It's not about money per se.

  63. It's not about financial investments and stewardship,

  64. although those things are important

  65. and certainly discussed in scripture.

  66. This particular text is about investing the gospel.

  67. So I want you to see a couple of things, all right?

  68. Here's the first thing I want you to see.

  69. If you'd like to take notes,

  70. feel free to write down these outlines

  71. in your handout there.

  72. I'll tell you as we go along, all right?

  73. Number one, the first thing we see

  74. is that Jesus addresses their expectations.

  75. Jesus addresses their expectations.

  76. Verse 11, as they heard these things,

  77. he proceeded to tell a parable

  78. because he was near to Jerusalem

  79. and because they supposed

  80. that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.

  81. So in this context of Jesus' ministry,

  82. crowds have been following and observing Jesus

  83. for a long time now.

  84. They believe that he is Israel's Messiah

  85. who has come from God.

  86. They also knew very well the Old Testament scriptures

  87. which prophesied that the Messiah would reign as king

  88. over all the earth from Jerusalem.

  89. So the closer Jesus gets to Jerusalem

  90. in his earthly ministry,

  91. the more excited they are as they expect

  92. in just a matter of days,

  93. Jesus is going to overthrow all government entities

  94. and bring God's perfect kingdom to this earth.

  95. They supposed that to be the case

  96. and they expected this to happen

  97. as soon as Jesus gets to Jerusalem.

  98. And one of the reasons why

  99. that was at the forefront of their minds

  100. is because of the many Old Testament prophecies

  101. that spoke of the Messiah's work.

  102. One particular text in Zechariah chapter 14 says this,

    Zechariah 14 chapter mention

  103. On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives

  104. and the Mount of Olives shall be split into two

  105. from east to west.

  106. Then the Lord my God will come

  107. and all the holy ones with him.

  108. On that day there shall be no light, cold, or frost

  109. and the Lord will be king over all the earth.

  110. On that day the Lord will be one and his name one.

  111. Well, it sounds like this may be coming to fulfillment,

  112. at least in their ears it did.

  113. Scriptures like this were on their minds.

  114. They're expecting the restoration of David's throne

  115. and the elimination of all kingdoms.

  116. All kingdoms except God's kingdom.

  117. But they can't seem to grasp

  118. as Jesus taught them again and again

  119. that before the full and perfect kingdom of God

  120. is established on earth,

  121. the Messiah must die.

  122. He must rise again

  123. so that his primary mission is accomplished.

  124. The mission of God's gospel work

  125. going throughout the world.

  126. saving his people from their sins.

  127. Yes, he will one day

  128. establish the completed and full kingdom of God

  129. upon this earth.

  130. But that was not to be done yet.

  131. So to address their expectations,

  132. he tells them a parable.

  133. A parable to prepare them

  134. for what will soon be

  135. his departure

  136. and delayed return.

  137. By the way,

  138. it is in that interim period

  139. that you and I live right now.

  140. Between the already

  141. and the not yet.

  142. Between the king's departure

  143. and the king's return.

  144. Where are we

  145. on God's timeline

  146. of prophetic events?

  147. Well,

  148. the king has departed

  149. into heaven

  150. where he sits

  151. on the right hand

  152. of the throne of God

  153. interceding on behalf

  154. of his people.

  155. And now we are waiting

  156. for the king to return.

  157. And when he returns,

  158. he will establish

  159. fully and finally

  160. his perfect kingdom

  161. on this earth.

  162. But it was not happening

  163. at that moment

  164. that they supposed

  165. it was going to happen.

  166. Verse 12,

  167. Jesus says,

  168. therefore,

  169. he tells this parable again

  170. to address this issue,

  171. that a nobleman

  172. went into a far country

  173. to receive for himself

  174. a kingdom

  175. and then return.

  176. So again,

  177. on the backdrop

  178. of their expectation,

  179. Jesus is saying,

  180. look,

  181. the king is going

  182. to be leaving soon

  183. to build and complete

  184. his kingdom,

  185. but he will return

  186. and bring it fully

  187. to this earth

  188. just as you expect.

  189. But it's not happening

  190. when you think

  191. it's going to happen.

  192. It will, however,

  193. happen.

  194. Now, before I move on,

  195. I think it's very important

  196. that as we talk about

  197. investing the gospel

  198. and the gospel kingdom of God

  199. that we be reminded

  200. of the full message

  201. of Christ's gospel.

  202. What is the gospel?

  203. The gospel is a word

  204. that means good news,

  205. the good news of God,

  206. the gospel of God,

  207. and here it is,

  208. that God,

  209. in the form of Jesus Christ,

  210. came from heaven

  211. for us.

  212. He lived sinlessly

  213. on this earth

  214. for us.

  215. He died sacrificially

  216. as our substitute

  217. on the cross

  218. for us.

  219. He rose again

  220. from the dead

  221. three days later

  222. for us.

  223. He ascended back

  224. to heaven

  225. and is interceding

  226. for us

  227. at this moment

  228. for us.

  229. And one day,

  230. one day,

  231. He will come

  232. again

  233. for us.

  234. And when He comes

  235. again,

  236. all the kingdoms

  237. of this world

  238. will become His.

  239. And He will rule

  240. and reign on this earth,

  241. a new earth,

  242. forever and ever.

  243. Friends,

  244. this is the gospel.

  245. And we must understand

  246. the full message

  247. of the gospel.

  248. The gospel is not just

  249. that He came

  250. the first time.

  251. It's not just

  252. that He died.

  253. It's not just

  254. that He rose again.

  255. It's also that

  256. He is coming back.

  257. He will return

  258. and His kingdom

  259. will be perfectly

  260. established

  261. on this earth

  262. forever and ever.

  263. So Jesus is addressing

  264. their expectation here.

  265. They think

  266. the kingdom

  267. is coming back

  268. in just a matter

  269. of days

  270. as He,

  271. the believed Messiah,

  272. is making His way

  273. to Jerusalem.

  274. But Jesus says,

  275. no, I need to tell you

  276. a story to help

  277. you understand.

  278. It's not happening

  279. when you think

  280. it's going to happen.

  281. In fact,

  282. I'm going to leave

  283. and I'm going to be

  284. gone for a while.

  285. And as I'm gone,

  286. there's some important

  287. things I need you to do

  288. before I come back.

  289. That leads me

  290. to the second thing

  291. I want you to write

  292. down in your notes.

  293. The first thing

  294. is that Jesus

  295. addresses their expectation.

  296. The second thing

  297. that Jesus does here

  298. is He speaks

  299. of their devotion

  300. to the king's mission.

  301. Jesus speaks

  302. of their devotion

  303. to the king's mission.

  304. So again,

  305. let's go back

  306. to the parable.

  307. Verse 13,

  308. the king is leaving

  309. for the far country

  310. and as he does,

  311. he calls ten

  312. of his servants

  313. and gave them

  314. ten minas.

  315. And he said to them,

  316. engage in business

  317. until I come.

  318. But his citizens

  319. hated him

  320. and sent a delegation

  321. after him saying,

  322. we do not want

  323. this man to reign

  324. over us.

  325. What Jesus does here

  326. in this parable

  327. at the very beginning

  328. is He presents

  329. two groups of people.

  330. The first group

  331. is the king's servants

  332. and the second group

  333. is the king's enemies.

  334. There are two groups

  335. of people that exist

  336. in this world today.

  337. And perhaps even

  338. in this room.

  339. There are the king's servants

  340. and there are

  341. the king's enemies.

  342. And that's how

  343. he outlines them

  344. here in the text.

  345. Let's start

  346. with the king's servants.

  347. They are given here

  348. a responsibility

  349. while they wait

  350. for the king

  351. to return.

  352. And in the parable,

  353. the responsibility

  354. comes in the form

  355. of, notice this,

  356. one mina.

  357. One mina.

  358. Now this is how

  359. we know Jesus

  360. is not referring

  361. to talents

  362. or abilities

  363. in this parable

  364. as He does

  365. in other parables.

  366. Because the minas

  367. here are equally

  368. given to the ten

  369. servants.

  370. One mina

  371. per servant.

  372. Now when Jesus

  373. uses talents

  374. and abilities

  375. in other parables

  376. and other places

  377. of the scripture,

  378. He often

  379. divvies those out

  380. if you will

  381. in different quantities.

  382. Somebody

  383. might get five,

  384. another two,

  385. and someone over here

  386. eight,

  387. and another person

  388. one.

  389. But this is different.

  390. This is how we know

  391. it has nothing to do

  392. with skills

  393. or talents

  394. and abilities.

  395. There's something

  396. of equality

  397. being spoken of here.

  398. Ten servants

  399. and every servant

  400. gets the same amount.

  401. One mina

  402. per servant.

  403. Now financially

  404. speaking,

  405. a mina back

  406. in this day

  407. was worth about

  408. three months

  409. of salary.

  410. And the king

  411. wanted his servants

  412. to each take

  413. the same amount

  414. of money,

  415. three months

  416. of salary,

  417. and use it

  418. to invest

  419. in the building

  420. of his kingdom

  421. until he returned.

  422. So again,

  423. look at the parables.

  424. The characters

  425. are clear.

  426. Jesus is the king,

  427. right?

  428. The servants

  429. are his people,

  430. believers.

  431. And let me ask you

  432. this question.

  433. Think for yourself

  434. for a moment.

  435. What is the one

  436. same

  437. and equal gift

  438. that Jesus

  439. has given

  440. to all

  441. his people?

  442. the gospel?

  443. The gospel.

  444. The gospel.

  445. That is the one

  446. same

  447. and equal

  448. gift

  449. that all

  450. of his people

  451. has received.

  452. So this is not

  453. abilities.

  454. This is not skills.

  455. This is not talents.

  456. Like,

  457. some can sing

  458. and others

  459. of us,

  460. we just,

  461. we're barely

  462. hanging on

  463. for the ride,

  464. right?

  465. Some people

  466. have the gift

  467. of teaching.

  468. Others would be

  469. deathly afraid

  470. to stand up

  471. in front of other people.

  472. We can talk about

  473. skills and talents

  474. and gifts.

  475. That's not what

  476. we're talking about here.

  477. We're talking about

  478. the one

  479. same and equal

  480. gift that God

  481. has given

  482. every single

  483. one of his people.

  484. And that one

  485. same and equal

  486. gift is the

  487. gift of the

  488. gospel of Jesus

  489. Christ.

  490. Nobody in this

  491. room has more

  492. gospel than

  493. someone else.

  494. Nobody in this

  495. room who follows

  496. Christ has less

  497. gospel than

  498. someone else.

  499. We all have the

  500. same equal

  501. amount of

  502. gospel.

  503. God has saved

  504. us.

  505. He has chosen

  506. us.

  507. He has called

  508. us to

  509. himself.

  510. He has

  511. redeemed us,

  512. adopted us.

  513. We are all

  514. equally the

  515. same his

  516. people.

  517. And that's

  518. what Jesus is

  519. emphasizing here.

  520. You've all

  521. received the

  522. same gospel.

  523. Now go and

  524. individually,

  525. each one of you,

  526. invest the

  527. gospel as my

  528. servants until

  529. I return.

  530. You see,

  531. the gospel work

  532. of saving

  533. lost sinners

  534. and conforming

  535. them into the

  536. image of Jesus

  537. Christ.

  538. That is the

  539. king's mission.

  540. That's the

  541. king's mission.

  542. And he is

  543. calling you and

  544. I to devote our

  545. lives, our

  546. lives, not just

  547. our Sundays.

  548. Oh, get this.

  549. Not just our

  550. Sundays.

  551. He is calling us

  552. to devote our

  553. lives as his

  554. servants to

  555. investing in that

  556. gospel work.

  557. So I'll go back

  558. to the question

  559. at the beginning

  560. on your fifth

  561. anniversary.

  562. In what ways is

  563. your life busy

  564. investing your

  565. mina?

  566. In what ways is

  567. your life busy

  568. investing the

  569. gospel?

  570. Perhaps for some

  571. of us it may even

  572. begin today by

  573. making a decision

  574. to devote

  575. yourself to

  576. becoming a

  577. gospel member of

  578. this particular

  579. fellowship.

  580. To help this

  581. church collectively

  582. together invest

  583. the gospel through

  584. its various

  585. ministries.

  586. Oh, friends,

  587. there is so much

  588. work to do, so

  589. much gospel work

  590. to do.

  591. But we need more

  592. gospel investors

  593. who will take what

  594. Jesus has given

  595. them in his free

  596. gift of grace and

  597. start working that

  598. investment for the

  599. kingdom of God.

  600. So maybe it

  601. begins for some

  602. of us there,

  603. joining the

  604. fellowship, seeing

  605. how I can serve in

  606. the life and

  607. ministry of

  608. Lakeside.

  609. What about at

  610. home with your

  611. family?

  612. What gospel

  613. investments are you

  614. making with your

  615. family?

  616. In the life of

  617. your children,

  618. your grandchildren,

  619. spouses?

  620. What about bringing

  621. the lost to hear

  622. the gospel?

  623. I am often

  624. challenged with the

  625. thought of whether

  626. or not I work

  627. really hard.

  628. Do I work really

  629. hard week after

  630. week getting

  631. unbelievers to

  632. Laurel Baptist

  633. Church so that

  634. they might see the

  635. gospel and hear

  636. the gospel?

  637. I have been working

  638. really hard on one

  639. particular couple.

  640. I helped run the

  641. baseball league in

  642. the town of

  643. Harrisburg.

  644. So there's one

  645. particular coach I've

  646. been praying about

  647. and working with for

  648. about two years now.

  649. When are you going

  650. to come visit?

  651. When are you going

  652. to come visit?

  653. When are you going

  654. to come visit?

  655. Guess when he

  656. texted me and told

  657. me he was going

  658. to come visit?

  659. Last night.

  660. Last night.

  661. Hey man, we're

  662. coming tomorrow.

  663. I'm like, oh.

  664. I hope he's there

  665. this morning.

  666. I'm going to find

  667. out soon.

  668. My father's

  669. preaching.

  670. I hope he comes

  671. back next week.

  672. But no, honestly,

  673. are we working hard

  674. to invest the gospel

  675. by inviting our

  676. friends and family

  677. to come and hear

  678. the gospel message

  679. of Jesus Christ?

  680. Oh, listen to this

  681. statement by Richard

  682. Baxter, an old

  683. Puritan pastor.

  684. There's a book he's

  685. written called

  686. The Reformed Pastor.

  687. It's a small little

  688. encouraging book for

  689. men of God like

  690. myself.

  691. I read it annually.

  692. Listen to this

  693. statement he made.

  694. He said, we have

  695. greater work here to

  696. do than securing our

  697. own salvation.

  698. We are members of the

  699. church and we must

  700. labor to do good.

  701. We are trusted with

  702. our master's mission to

  703. do our best to propagate

  704. his truth and grace and

  705. church and to bring home

  706. souls and honor his

  707. calls and edify his

  708. flock and further the

  709. salvation of as many as

  710. we possibly can.

  711. What's he talking about?

  712. There's more to do than

  713. just believe the gospel.

  714. We as his servants are

  715. called to invest the

  716. gospel.

  717. Can I just spend a few

  718. moments being very

  719. transparent and frank?

  720. The work that the king has

  721. given us to do, it's

  722. challenging work.

  723. It's not easy.

  724. And let me be the first to

  725. tell you that it often

  726. requires a great deal of

  727. sacrifice.

  728. It's hard work to invest.

  729. Requires much.

  730. But it's also significant

  731. work.

  732. Because we're talking about

  733. eternity here.

  734. And until he returns, it

  735. will be an ongoing work.

  736. That is, it's an

  737. unfinished task.

  738. But the finish line is

  739. not here on earth.

  740. The finish line is when

  741. the king comes.

  742. Think about it in terms

  743. of your anniversary as a

  744. church family because I

  745. think it's so important to

  746. remind ourselves of this on

  747. the day like today.

  748. What God has given you to

  749. do in this community.

  750. Look right here.

  751. It is not easy.

  752. It's not easy.

  753. Not this kind of church.

  754. Not a church that preaches

  755. the gospel.

  756. Not a church that lives by

  757. the Bible.

  758. That's not easy to do.

  759. It requires sacrifice.

  760. And it requires sacrifice

  761. from more than the pastor.

  762. And more than the leaders.

  763. It requires sacrifice from

  764. all of us.

  765. But listen to me.

  766. Nothing is more important.

  767. Nothing is more important

  768. than this.

  769. Because what God has given

  770. you to do is eternally

  771. significant.

  772. That is already in five

  773. years heaven has been

  774. impacted by Lakeside Bible

  775. Church.

  776. Already.

  777. It's easy to get caught up

  778. about where we meet and

  779. what side of town we may be

  780. on and all these kind of

  781. physical needs.

  782. But really it's about

  783. eternity.

  784. It's investing in eternity.

  785. And heaven is already

  786. impacted by what you've

  787. done in five years.

  788. The baptisms.

  789. The salvations.

  790. What the Lord is doing.

  791. It's eternally significant.

  792. But I need you to know

  793. that what you're doing here

  794. will never be a completed

  795. work.

  796. Not until Jesus declares

  797. it finished.

  798. By his return.

  799. I don't know about you

  800. but I'm a task oriented

  801. person.

  802. I govern my life by

  803. task list.

  804. To do list.

  805. And my OCD

  806. personality gets a little

  807. bent out of shape when I

  808. can't check that box off

  809. at the end of the day.

  810. Sometimes even erroneously

  811. so my mind gets so focused

  812. on checking it off the list

  813. completing the task.

  814. Well that's a hard thing

  815. to be fixated on

  816. when you're involved

  817. as the Lord's servant.

  818. We have a task list

  819. but only he

  820. listen

  821. only he gets to check

  822. off the box.

  823. Only he gets to determine

  824. when it's finished.

  825. When it's completed.

  826. We have to keep working it.

  827. We have to keep investing it.

  828. We're servants.

  829. And we need to be busy

  830. serving.

  831. Well that's the king's

  832. servant.

  833. Let me just mention

  834. briefly the king's enemies

  835. and I'll give you the last

  836. point.

  837. We'll wrap this up.

  838. Again he mentions two

  839. groups of people.

  840. The king's servants.

  841. The second group of people

  842. is the king's enemies.

  843. And I think what Jesus

  844. is doing here is he's

  845. trying to show us that

  846. there is a group of people

  847. who do not want them

  848. to be their king.

  849. Think about that.

  850. The king's servants

  851. are those who want

  852. Jesus as their king.

  853. But the king's enemies

  854. are those who do not

  855. want Jesus as their king.

  856. They hate him.

  857. And the rejection of him

  858. is emphatically clear.

  859. Look at verse 14.

  860. We do not want this man

  861. to reign over us.

  862. Do you know that that

  863. very statement right now

  864. right there in verse 14

  865. that is the ultimate reason

  866. why lost sinners remain lost.

  867. That's the reason.

  868. It's not that they remain lost

  869. on account of insufficient evidence

  870. for the reality of Jesus.

  871. Nor does it have anything to do

  872. with the perceived injustices

  873. of those who profess

  874. to know and follow him.

  875. No, no, no.

  876. Lost sinners remain lost

  877. because they do not want

  878. Jesus to rule their lives.

  879. They don't want Jesus

  880. as their lord and king.

  881. And the king calls them rebels.

  882. Oh, may you and I

  883. not be numbered

  884. among those rebels.

  885. The king's enemies

  886. who reject his lordship.

  887. Instead, may we commit ourselves

  888. as servants of the king,

  889. a servant who has received

  890. the gospel and is devoted

  891. to the king's mission

  892. of building his kingdom

  893. by investing the gospel.

  894. Here's the third thing

  895. you can write down.

  896. Let's follow him in sequence.

  897. You ready?

  898. The first thing in the text,

  899. Jesus addresses their expectations.

  900. Secondly, Jesus speaks

  901. of their devotion

  902. to the king's mission.

  903. And then thirdly,

  904. Jesus prepares them

  905. for a coming day of reckoning.

  906. Jesus prepares them

  907. for a coming day of reckoning.

  908. So the parable continues.

  909. Okay, look at it.

  910. Verse 15.

  911. When he returned,

  912. having received the kingdom,

  913. he ordered these servants

  914. to whom he had given the money

  915. to be called to him

  916. that he might know

  917. what they had gained

  918. gained by doing business.

  919. In other words,

  920. the king returns,

  921. and when he returns,

  922. he summons all of his servants

  923. to stand before him

  924. and give an account

  925. for how they invested

  926. what he had given them.

  927. Spiritually speaking,

  928. I gave you the gospel.

  929. Now I want to see,

  930. since I'm back,

  931. how you invested the gospel

  932. that I gave you.

  933. That day's coming

  934. for all of us,

  935. by the way.

  936. It's not a day

  937. where sin is judged.

  938. Don't misunderstand.

  939. It's not a day

  940. where sin is judged.

  941. Sin is judged on the cross.

  942. It has already been judged

  943. in Jesus.

  944. But it is a day

  945. where our work for Christ,

  946. our investments,

  947. will be revealed.

  948. 1 Corinthians 3.

  949. Each one's work

  950. will be made known.

  951. In other words,

  952. each one's investments

  953. will be made known.

  954. For the day will disclose it

  955. because it will be revealed

  956. by fire.

  957. It will test

  958. what sort of investments

  959. he has made.

  960. So verse 16 says,

  961. the first came before him

  962. and said,

  963. Lord, your mina

  964. has made 10 minas more.

  965. And he said to him,

  966. well done, good servant.

  967. You've been faithful

  968. in a very little.

  969. You'll have authority

  970. over 10 cities.

  971. The second came saying,

  972. Lord, your mina

  973. has made five minas.

  974. And he said to them,

  975. now you're going to be

  976. over five cities.

  977. You see what's happening here?

  978. You follow in the sequence?

  979. These two servants

  980. took their one mina

  981. invested it

  982. and what happened?

  983. It multiplied.

  984. The point is,

  985. they worked it.

  986. They invested

  987. what the king

  988. had given them

  989. and it pleased the king

  990. that they had done so.

  991. And he responded to them

  992. by giving them

  993. a generous reward.

  994. Remember,

  995. it's not about money,

  996. it's about the gospel.

  997. I noted several things

  998. about these particular servants

  999. just by how the Lord

  1000. rewarded them.

  1001. I noted here

1002. that they were not lazy,

  1003. apathetic,

  1004. or casual

  1005. with their gift.

  1006. They intentionally,

  1007. urgently,

  1008. and faithfully

  1009. invested it.

  1010. I have a friend

  1011. who is deep into

  1012. financial investments.

  1013. Some of you

  1014. may be into that.

1015. I went to visit him

  1016. in Nashville

1017. a couple of weeks ago

  1018. and we're sitting

  1019. in his office.

  1020. He said,

1021. I want to show you

  1022. what I'm learning.

  1023. And he's showing me

  1024. all the lines

  1025. and the pre-investments

1026. and how to click on it

  1027. when you buy it

  1028. and what to click

  1029. when you sell it.

  1030. And he shows,

  1031. and all I,

  1032. I mean,

  1033. he sees dollar signs

  1034. on this graph.

1035. All I see is lines

  1036. going everywhere.

  1037. I have no idea

  1038. what's going on,

1039. but by the end of the day

  1040. he had pocketed

  1041. about $700

  1042. through his investments.

  1043. I'm like,

  1044. man,

1045. I need you to start

  1046. handling my money.

1047. Some of you get that.

  1048. I don't get that.

  1049. But I think

  1050. one of,

  1051. all of us

  1052. at least understand

  1053. that to be

  1054. that glued into it,

  1055. you can't be lazy,

  1056. apathetic,

  1057. or casual.

  1058. You gotta be intentional.

  1059. You gotta be faithful.

  1060. You gotta be urgent.

  1061. You gotta be ready.

  1062. Always investing it.

1063. That's what these servants did.

  1064. Notice also

  1065. that they humbly

  1066. took no credit

  1067. for how their mina

  1068. had multiplied.

  1069. Do you notice

  1070. what he said

  1071. in verse 19,

  1072. or actually

  1073. both of the servants,

  1074. one in 16,

  1075. one in 19.

  1076. The servants said,

  1077. your,

  1078. mina

  1079. has made

  1080. more minas.

  1081. That's the servant

  1082. talking to the king.

  1083. That's the believer

  1084. who is serious

  1085. about investing

  1086. in the gospel

  1087. talking to Jesus.

  1088. He didn't say,

  1089. my mina

  1090. did this.

  1091. Your mina

  1092. did this.

  1093. Friends,

  1094. the gospel

  1095. grows

  1096. by its own

  1097. power.

  1098. Our responsibility

  1099. is simply

  1100. invest it

  1101. and the gospel

  1102. will grow the kingdom

  1103. and all the glory

  1104. and credit

  1105. is going to go

  1106. to the king

  1107. and his gift.

  1108. It's not us

  1109. looking around

  1110. saying,

  1111. look what my church

  1112. in Lake Norman

  1113. did.

  1114. No,

  1115. Lord,

  1116. look what your church

  1117. is doing

  1118. as we invest

  1119. the gospel

  1120. in this community.

  1121. I wrote down

  1122. also that they

  1123. were commended

  1124. and rewarded

  1125. on account

  1126. of their faithful

  1127. work.

  1128. Jesus says to them,

  1129. well done,

  1130. good servant.

  1131. Speculation is often

  1132. circled about these

  1133. cities.

  1134. What do the cities

  1135. mean?

  1136. It may very well

  1137. speak of the

  1138. generosity of

  1139. the various degrees

  1140. of reward

  1141. that God will give

  1142. his servants

  1143. in the new heaven

  1144. and new earth.

  1145. I don't intend

  1146. to spend much time

  1147. on that this week

  1148. other than God

  1149. rewards accordingly

  1150. as he sovereignly

  1151. determines.

  1152. But then notice

  1153. this in verse 20.

  1154. Another came and said,

  1155. Lord,

  1156. here is your mina

  1157. which I kept laid

  1158. away in a handkerchief.

  1159. For I was afraid

  1160. of you because

1161. you were a severe man.

  1162. You take what you

  1163. did not deposit

  1164. and you reap

1165. what you did not sow.

  1166. So for the young

  1167. people in here

  1168. who do not know

  1169. what handkerchiefs are,

  1170. they are very

  1171. elegant tissues.

  1172. And the imagery

1173. is he had a little

  1174. cloth,

  1175. a handkerchief,

  1176. some tissues

  1177. in his pocket.

  1178. He took the mina,

  1179. put it in the

  1180. handkerchief,

1181. and maybe he kept it,

  1182. maybe he buried it.

  1183. The point is

  1184. he did nothing

  1185. with it.

  1186. He had nothing

  1187. to show for

  1188. when the king

  1189. came back.

  1190. The only thing

  1191. he had to give

  1192. the king

  1193. was the mina

  1194. that was already

  1195. given to him

  1196. at the very beginning.

  1197. But that's not

  1198. what the king

  1199. requested.

  1200. He did not want

  1201. the servant

  1202. to inactively

  1203. sit in isolation

  1204. keeping the gift

  1205. to himself.

  1206. It was given

  1207. to him

  1208. to invest.

  1209. And of course

  1210. the excuse

  1211. is absolutely

  1212. bogus.

  1213. He actually

  1214. blames the king

  1215. for his failure

  1216. to invest.

  1217. Accusing the king

  1218. of being a lord

  1219. who takes

  1220. but never gives.

1221. A lord who is selfish

  1222. but never generous.

  1223. I mean how can

1224. any of us this morning

  1225. say that the lord

  1226. is not good,

  1227. that he's not gracious,

  1228. that he is not

  1229. generous toward us,

  1230. that he doesn't

  1231. deserve our

  1232. investments.

  1233. The servant

  1234. was the one

  1235. who was unfaithful

  1236. not the king.

  1237. So the king

  1238. says in verse 22

  1239. and verse 23

  1240. if what you're

  1241. saying is true

  1242. then why didn't

  1243. you just put

  1244. the mina

  1245. in the bank?

  1246. Well the reason

  1247. he didn't

  1248. is because he

  1249. was too lazy

  1250. to do even that.

  1251. Or at the very

  1252. least he allowed

  1253. his emotions

  1254. and feelings

  1255. to immobilize him.

  1256. Either way

  1257. Jesus called him

  1258. a wicked servant.

  1259. A wicked servant.

  1260. Because look right here.

  1261. He didn't

  1262. invest the gospel.

  1263. Now brothers and sisters

  1264. we should shudder

  1265. at the thought.

  1266. We should shudder

  1267. at the thought

  1268. that Jesus

  1269. might consider

  1270. any one of us

  1271. as wicked

  1272. servants.

  1273. So Jesus

  1274. takes the mina

  1275. from that wicked

  1276. servant

  1277. and he gives it

  1278. to the one

  1279. who has ten

  1280. minas.

  1281. The age old

  1282. question is

  1283. whether or not

  1284. this wicked servant

  1285. was truly a

  1286. Christian or not.

  1287. Was he truly

  1288. a saved man

  1289. or not?

  1290. That's the age

  1291. old question.

  1292. And to provide

  1293. you an answer

  1294. in relation to

  1295. what I think

  1296. here it is

  1297. you ready?

  1298. I don't know.

  1299. That's my answer.

  1300. There does

  1301. seem to be

  1302. however

  1303. a clear distinction

  1304. in the parable

  1305. between those

  1306. who are his

  1307. and those

  1308. who are not

  1309. his.

  1310. And as we see

  1311. in verse 27

  1312. the wicked servant

  1313. is not among

  1314. those who are

  1315. not believers

  1316. in the parable.

  1317. I think

  1318. a hint

  1319. to where his

  1320. standing

  1321. with Christ

  1322. may be

  1323. could be

  1324. looked in

  1325. other scriptures

  1326. to inform us.

  1327. 1 Corinthians 3

  1328. for example

  1329. says if the work

  1330. that anyone

  1331. has built

  1332. on the foundation

  1333. survives

  1334. he will receive

  1335. a reward

  1336. if anyone's

  1337. work is burned

  1338. up he will

  1339. suffer loss

  1340. though he

  1341. himself will

  1342. be saved

  1343. as only through

  1344. fire.

  1345. It's just a little

  1346. insight but it

  1347. does suggest that

  1348. there are those

  1349. and this is the

  1350. point

  1351. there are those

  1352. who barely

  1353. get in

  1354. so to speak.

  1355. There are those

  1356. believers who just

  1357. barely cross the line.

  1358. they will not

  1359. have any

  1360. rewards to

  1361. enjoy in

  1362. eternity

  1363. and on the

  1364. day of the

  1365. king's return

  1366. they will

  1367. experience great

  1368. loss but they

  1369. themselves will

  1370. be saved.

  1371. But then

  1372. and this is

  1373. how we close

  1374. then there

  1375. there are those

  1376. believers whose

  1377. devotion to the

  1378. gospel is so

  1379. strong that when

  1380. the king returns

  1381. they will receive

  1382. a generous

  1383. reward from

  1384. God

  1385. making the

  1386. kingdom of God

  1387. for that Christian

  1388. so much

  1389. sweeter.

  1390. It reminds us

  1391. today that as we

  1392. wait for his

  1393. return there is

  1394. much more to do.

  1395. If we are

  1396. inactive sitting

  1397. on our hands

  1398. keeping to

  1399. ourselves the

  1400. gift God has

  1401. given us while

  1402. not investing it

  1403. in the church

  1404. investing it in

  1405. the community

  1406. investing it in

  1407. our families and

  1408. throughout the

  1409. context of our

  1410. lives I pray

  1411. today that we

  1412. will wake up

  1413. to the reality

  1414. that such

  1415. inactivity is

  1416. disobedient to

  1417. the king's

  1418. commands.

  1419. And on the

  1420. day of reckoning

  1421. he will

  1422. address it.

  1423. You've been

  1424. put here

  1425. not only in a

  1426. location but

  1427. you've been put

  1428. here in a

  1429. location with a

  1430. trust.

  1431. The gospel

  1432. will be

  1433. and again I

  1434. ask you the

  1435. question for

  1436. self-evaluation

  1437. in what ways

  1438. and with what

  1439. kind of urgency

  1440. and sacrifice

  1441. and strategy

  1442. are you

  1443. investing it?

  1444. All of those

  1445. are important.

  1446. Urgency.

  1447. Not casual

  1448. investments.

  1449. Urgent

  1450. investments.

  1451. Sacrificial

  1452. investments.

  1453. Not convenient

  1454. investments.

  1455. Strategic

  1456. investments.

  1457. Not just

  1458. we'll cross the

  1459. bridge when we

  1460. get there.

  1461. But no

  1462. organizing,

  1463. strategizing,

  1464. doing what we

  1465. can to invest

  1466. the gospel.

  1467. Lakeside there is

  1468. so much more

  1469. to do and I

  1470. want to encourage

  1471. you this morning

  1472. to keep investing

  1473. the gospel.

  1474. I want to

  1475. encourage you

  1476. who are not a

  1477. part of this

  1478. fellowship to

  1479. prayerfully join

  1480. this congregation

  1481. of believers and

  1482. help them invest

  1483. the gospel.

  1484. We don't always

  1485. know when returns

  1486. on investments

  1487. come in.

  1488. Financially or

  1489. spiritually.

  1490. We don't always

  1491. know that.

  1492. But here's what I

  1493. can guarantee you

1494. and I want you to

  1495. think about this

  1496. verse.

  1497. Jesus when he

  1498. sent his disciples

  1499. out before his

  1500. ascension in Mark

  1501. 16.

  1502. The Bible says

  1503. that the disciples

  1504. went everywhere

  1505. preaching the

  1506. gospel.

  1507. They went

  1508. everywhere investing

  1509. the gospel and

  1510. the Lord

  1511. worked with

  1512. them.

  1513. Lakeside

  1514. go today in

  1515. this community

  1516. wherever you

  1517. live Cornelius

  1518. Davidson Huntersville

  1519. Mooresville wherever

  1520. you reside as you

  1521. go go investing

  1522. the gospel knowing

  1523. that the Lord has

  1524. committed himself

  1525. to work with

  1526. you to go

  1527. before you

  1528. to work with

  1529. you to use

  1530. you until he

  1531. returns.

  1532. Well I don't

  1533. think we can

  1534. pray without

  1535. at least

  1536. drawing quick

  1537. attention to

  1538. verse 27.

  1539. because we've

  1540. talked a lot

  1541. about the

  1542. king's

  1543. servants

  1544. let's

  1545. close by

  1546. addressing the

  1547. fate of the

  1548. king's enemies.

  1549. Verse 27

  1550. it says

  1551. it's for those

  1552. enemies of

  1553. mine who did

  1554. not want me to

  1555. reign over them

  1556. bring them here

  1557. and slaughter

  1558. them before me.

  1559. It's quite a

  1560. picture isn't

  1561. it?

  1562. The point is

  1563. that day of

  1564. reckoning is not

  1565. only to address

  1566. the work of the

  1567. king's servants

  1568. but it will also

1569. be a day when the

  1570. king's enemies

  1571. will be fully

  1572. and finally

  1573. condemned.

  1574. And here's the

  1575. message.

  1576. Reject the

  1577. king and you

  1578. will have no

  1579. place in his

  1580. kingdom.

  1581. Wherever your

  1582. heart may be

  1583. before the

  1584. Lord today

  1585. maybe you are

  1586. convinced and

  1587. assured that you

  1588. are a follower

  1589. of his but maybe

  1590. you're exploring

  1591. maybe you're

  1592. interested maybe

  1593. you're trying to

  1594. figure this whole

  1595. Jesus is Lord

  1596. thing.

  1597. I need you to

  1598. understand this as

  1599. you go home and

  1600. meditate on the

  1601. scripture today.

  1602. To reject

  1603. Jesus as king

  1604. is to have no

  1605. place at all

  1606. in his kingdom

  1607. today, tomorrow

  1608. and forever.

  1609. The first step

  1610. for gospel

  1611. investment is to

  1612. receive the gospel

  1613. and that is to

  1614. receive the gospel

  1615. by making Jesus

  1616. your king.

  1617. By trusting him

  1618. as your Lord and

  1619. Savior who took

  1620. your place, died

  1621. for your sins

  1622. and longs for

  1623. you to be

  1624. his.

  1625. You don't have

  1626. to become Jesus

  1627. by first becoming

  1628. a part of the

  1629. church, giving

  1630. money to the

  1631. church, all of

  1632. those things.

  1633. It's by faith and

  1634. trust in Christ.

  1635. Put your faith and

  1636. trust as Christ, as

  1637. the king.

  1638. The king who is

  1639. coming again and

  1640. become his and

  1641. allow him to show

  1642. you and teach you

  1643. through the wonderful

  1644. gift of his church

  1645. how to invest the

  1646. gospel in your life,

  1647. in your family and

  1648. in this world.

  1649. So my prayer for

  1650. all of us, from

  1651. those from Laurel,

  1652. from those from

  1653. Lakeside, my prayer

  1654. today is Lord make

  1655. us faithful servants

  1656. who invest the

  1657. gospel.

  1658. Thank you.
