  1. 1 Thessalonians chapter 2, we are returning to the paragraph that we began last Sunday.

    1 Thessalonians 2 chapter mention

  2. We'll finish it today.

  3. And so let's read the whole paragraph together, though most of our focus is going to be on

  4. verses 15 and 16.

  5. Let's read the entire paragraph, beginning at verse 13.

  6. 1 Thessalonians chapter 2, 13 to 16.

    1 Thessalonians 2 chapter mention

  7. And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you receive the word of God, which

  8. you heard from us, you accepted it, not as the word of men, but as what it really is,

  9. the word of God, which is at work in you believers.

  10. For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God and Christ Jesus that are in Judea.

  11. For you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews, who

  12. killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets and drove us out and displeased God and oppose

  13. all mankind by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved.

  14. So as or with the result that they are always to fill up the measure of their sins.

  15. Wrath has come upon them at last.

  16. Well, as we said last week, there's two groups of people that are presented to us in this text.

  17. Both groups of people share an immense privilege that many people actually do not experience

  18. in their lifetime.

  19. And it's this, everyone to which and about which Paul was writing in 1 Thessalonians had

  20. at some point received the word of God.

  21. They'd received the word of God.

  22. And in the context of the passage that we just read, received refers to hearing a particular

  23. message.

  24. And that message, what he calls the word of God, is the good news of salvation through Jesus

  25. Christ as it is revealed to us in the scriptures.

  26. We call it the gospel, right?

  27. So everybody to which he's writing and about which he's writing has received this message,

  28. this gospel message from the word of God.

  29. However, not everyone who receives the gospel, who receives the word of God, responds in the

  30. same way.

  31. As we discovered in our study of verse 13, some people, like the Christians in Thessalonica,

  32. upon receiving the gospel of Jesus, accept it as Paul's word.

  33. If you'll just set your eyes on verse 13 again.

  34. When you receive the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it.

  35. So this is in direct reference to the Christians in Thessalonica.

  36. They accepted it.

  37. That is, they welcomed it.

  38. They believed it.

  39. And so Paul offers his thanksgiving to God for this because he recognized that the conversion

  40. of the Thessalonian believers ultimately was the result of God's work in them through the

  41. preaching of the gospel message.

  42. That's what he says, isn't it?

  43. That you had accepted it not as the word of men, but as what it really is, the word of

  44. God, the gospel, which is at work in you.

  45. And we said that this work of God through the word of God continues in each believer so that

  46. their faith that is established at their conversion then continues and perseveres even in the face

  47. of serious suffering.

  48. So in verses 13 and 14, we find that the word of God works.

  49. It is at work to save sinners and to strengthen saints.

  50. That was all last Sunday.

  51. But there's another group that's represented and described in these verses as well.

  52. Well, those who accept the gospel are represented in the text by the Thessalonian Christians.

  53. Those who reject the gospel are portrayed here in these verses by the unbelieving Jews who

  54. persecuted them.

  55. That's the focus.

  56. The end of verse 14 all the way to the end of the paragraph.

  57. Just look at it with me once again.

  58. He says at the end of verse 14, you became imitators of the churches of God and Christ Jesus

  59. that are in Judea for you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did

  60. from the Jews.

  61. Countrymen here in this case is directly correlating to Jews.

  62. So that while the Thessalonian Christians certainly endured suffering at the hands of unbelieving

  63. Gentiles, the opposition against them was initiated, it was instigated, and it was continued by the

  64. Jews in their city in particular.

  65. And in this way, their experience and their perseverance imitated the Lord Jesus.

  66. It imitated the prophets.

  67. It imitated Paul and his team.

  68. And of course, it imitated the other congregations in Judea.

  69. Now, let me just show you from Acts 17.

  70. Once again, that's Luke's record of the beginnings of the church in Thessalonica.

  71. In Acts 17, verse 5, and then again in verse 13, it tells us this,

    Acts 17:5

  72. but the Jews were jealous and taking some wicked men of the rabble.

  73. They formed a mob, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason,

  74. seeking to bring them out to the crowd.

  75. And then a little bit later in verse 13, it says,

  76. But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Berea also,

  77. they came there too, agitating, stirring up the crowds there.

  78. So Paul doesn't write to the Thessalonians, and he doesn't mean to say that all Christian persecution,

  79. that every hardship that they faced came at the hands of the Jews.

  80. He's just referencing in the beginnings of the church the historical reality of the fact

  81. that what they were experiencing in their suffering was started and continued,

  82. at least up to this point, specifically by unbelieving Jews,

  83. who in Acts 17 were said to have been jealous over the conversion of some of the Thessalonican people.

  84. And some people have looked at passages like this,

  85. and they have used them to try to accuse Paul of being anti-Semitic.

  86. But that's a weak argument when you really begin to understand what he means here,

  87. and then of course, some of his other writings.

  88. He wasn't putting the blame of all Christian persecution on the shoulders of the Jews.

  89. He was using their historic involvement in such things as an example of those

  90. who after hearing and receiving the Word of God even repeatedly,

  91. continue to reject it, sometimes even vehemently, violently.

  92. Their rejection of the gospel, their harm toward God's people,

  93. led to greater and greater sin.

  94. And Paul gives us an illustration here,

  95. like a glass being continually filled with water.

  96. Their rejection of God's Word eventually spills over.

  97. And what does it spill over into?

  98. The wrath of God.

  99. So the Word of God that works to save sinners and strengthen saints in verses 13 and 14,

  100. we're told in verses 15 and 16 is the same Word of God that works to condemn rebels.

  101. They will ultimately be held accountable to God for their rejection of His Word.

  102. So in contrast to the Thessalonians who accepted the gospel are the Jews who rejected it.

  103. Now do you understand what I'm getting at there?

  104. Why is it that Paul is writing this?

  105. Why is he focused so much on the Jewish involvement in this persecution?

  106. Well, one, because that was the reality of the persecution.

  107. He's just being honest about what was happening.

  108. There's more to it than that.

  109. This is a picture here.

  110. On one hand, we have those who receive the gospel and accept it.

  111. They believe it.

  112. They welcome it.

  113. That's the Gentile believers there in Thessalonica.

  114. But then on the other hand, we have those who receive the gospel.

  115. They hear the Word of God preached over and over and over and over and over and over.

  116. They reject it.

  117. They're filling up their sins.

  118. It's going to spill over eventually into wrath.

  119. Paul is describing for us two groups of people.

  120. Those who accept.

  121. Those who reject.

  122. And the fact of the matter is that each of us shares in the same exact privilege as they did.

  123. So as we come to this text again for the second week in a row, the overarching question is very simple.

  124. To which group do you belong?

  125. We already know that you share in the privilege.

  126. You've heard the gospel.

  127. Most of us have heard it probably hundreds, maybe thousands of times in our lifetime.

  128. You've heard the gospel.

  129. Now what are you going to do with it?

  130. Will you accept it?

  131. You believe it.

  132. You welcome it.

  133. Or will you reject it?

  134. Turn away from it.

  135. And what I want to do this morning is actually quite simple with the end of this paragraph.

  136. I just want to look at the scriptures to show the pattern and the result of hearing the gospel and yet continuing to reject it.

  137. And then at the end I just want to draw three simple but important applications.

  138. Okay?

  139. You're going to look specifically at the pattern of the scripture with the Jews in particular.

  140. Of hearing the gospel and rejecting it again and again.

  141. What the result of that is.

  142. And then at the very end we'll come back and we'll just make three simple and essential applications about it.

  143. Okay?

  144. So let's think about the word condemns the rebel.

  145. The word condemns the rebel.

  146. Look with me again at verses 15 and 16.

  147. The Jews who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets and drove us out and displeased God and oppose all mankind by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved.

  148. So as always to fill up the measure of their sins.

  149. That's that illustration.

  150. And when it spills over what is it?

  151. The wrath of God has come upon them.

  152. The wrath of God has come upon them.

  153. The progression of Paul's argument is simple enough to see.

  154. First he recounts a series of hateful responses by unbelieving Jews beginning with Jesus' crucifixion.

  155. He could have gone earlier than that.

  156. Jesus goes earlier than that.

  157. And we'll get to that in just a moment.

  158. But in the case of this text Paul goes as far back as Jesus.

  159. And he says they killed the Lord Jesus.

  160. The crucifixion of Jesus.

  161. And then he continues through a series of hateful violent responses to the gospel message and to God's people.

  162. That culminates in this context in Thessalonica.

  163. Leading all the way up to what they were experiencing even then.

  164. That's the first thing he does in verse 15.

  165. And then after he illustrates those incidents as I said as a glass being filled up.

  166. You know what's the illustration about?

  167. It's about anticipation.

  168. I should have brought a pitcher of water and a glass with me this morning.

  169. If you were to just slowly begin pouring water and glass or if you're ever watching your waiter refill your drink at the table and they get distracted while they're pouring your drink.

  170. And you're just anticipating that any moment now is going to get to the top and it's going to spill over.

  171. That's the point of the illustration.

  172. That they are filling up in their rejection of the gospel.

  173. In their sin.

  174. They are filling up like a pitcher that's just pouring water in a glass.

  175. It's getting fuller and fuller and fuller and fuller and eventually what's going to happen, the final thing, is it's going to spill over.

  176. So he declares that the filling up of Israel's sins results in the pouring out of God's wrath against them.

  177. And that final statement there in verse 16 when he says that God's wrath has come upon them at last.

  178. It's a bit tricky, isn't it?

  179. Until you remember that Paul is speaking prophetically.

  180. There's a type of statement that can be unveiled in the original languages here.

  181. We would call it a prophetic perfect, which essentially means Paul's speaking prophetically here.

  182. Essentially what he means here is that the condemnation of the Jews as a people, right, for the rejection of the Messiah has already been inaugurated.

  183. And it is going to be fulfilled ultimately at the final judgment.

  184. That's what he means when he says the wrath has come upon them at last.

  185. It's been inaugurated now as the gospel is going throughout the world.

  186. God has turned his focus away from Israel and he's focused now on the world and the salvation of the world.

  187. And this judgment from God will be made final.

  188. It will come to its completion at the return of Christ.

  189. So when Paul says this at the end of the passage, what he means is it's been inaugurated, but it's certain.

  190. There's no question they will be condemned for their rejection.

  191. So Israel in this illustration receives the word,

  192. rejects the word,

  193. and is ultimately judged by God according to the word that they have rejected.

  194. Okay, you follow me?

  195. With me.

  196. That's the flow of argument here in verses 15 and 16.

  197. Now let's think about the scandal of it.

  198. The scandal of Israel's rejection of the gospel is magnified by the fact

  199. that no group in history, in the history of humanity,

  200. no group was more privileged and prepared to rejoice in God's Messiah than Israel.

  201. Nobody was better prepared for it.

  202. Nobody was more privileged to be ready for it, to receive it, to accept it than they were.

  203. It was Israel that God called out to be the people through which he would display his glory in the fallen world,

  204. beginning with Abraham and continuing on through the patriarchs to David and ultimately to Jesus.

  205. It was to Israel that God gave his law and his very presence.

  206. It was Israel that God preserved as a people over and over and over in spite of their sin and rebellion.

  207. And supremely it was to Israel that God gave his very son, the Messiah, the Christ,

  208. the serpent crusher from Genesis 3, 15,

  209. the perfect lamb, spotless lamb pictured for Israel in the sacrifices that they would make at the temple

  210. and the tabernacle all throughout their history.

  211. The one that the prophets continually preached to them was coming,

  212. all the promises, the covenants, everything God had promised.

  213. He was sending this Messiah to and through Israel

  214. in order that he might bring salvation to the world.

  215. And yet despite this immense privilege on the whole as a group,

  216. they routinely rejected God,

  217. rejected his covenants,

  218. and ultimately rejected his Messiah.

  219. Isn't that what John means in John chapter 1 in that great prologue?

    John 1 chapter mention

  220. What is it that he says?

  221. He came into his own,

  222. his own in the Jews.

  223. He came to his own,

  224. and his own did not receive him.

  225. They would not receive him.

  226. Now, I want to read just a few verses from Romans chapter 9.

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  227. They're on the screen for you.

  228. Notice what Paul says about it here.

  229. And this is another thing that works against this claim that Paul was anti-Semitic.

  230. He says,

  231. I'm speaking the truth in Christ.

  232. I'm not lying.

  233. My conscience bears witness in the Holy Spirit

  234. that I have great sorrow

  235. and unceasing anguish in my heart.

  236. For I could wish that I myself were accursed

  237. and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers,

  238. my kinsmen according to the flesh.

  239. They are Israelites.

  240. And notice what he says.

  241. To them belong the adoption.

  242. God made them his own people.

  243. The glory.

  244. He gave them his presence.

  245. The covenants.

  246. He spoke to them his promises.

  247. The giving of the law.

  248. The worship.

  249. The promises.

  250. To them belongs the patriarchs.

  251. From their race, according to the flesh,

  252. is the Christ,

  253. who is God over all,

  254. blessed forever.

  255. That's their privilege.

  256. Over and over and over.

  257. Israel heard the word of God.

  258. Over and over and over.

  259. They heard the promises of the Messiah.

  260. And then they saw the Messiah.

  261. And they killed him.

  262. Then he rose from the dead.

  263. And they rejected him still.

  264. Because of Israel's privilege,

  265. yet hardness of heart,

  266. Jesus routinely warned them

  267. of the future wrath of God

  268. if they would not repent and believe.

  269. Even a cursory reading of the Gospels

  270. will show that much of Jesus' interaction

  271. with his own people,

  272. especially in the days leading up

  273. to his crucifixion and resurrection,

  274. was on this very topic.

  275. And I want to show you just one example

  276. that I think Paul is drawing from

  277. when he writes this

  278. in 1 Thessalonians 2.

  279. In fact, why don't you turn with me there

  280. to Matthew 23.

  281. Matthew 23, verses 29 to 36.

    Matthew 23:29–36

  282. Matthew 23, verse 29.

    Matthew 23:29

  283. Jesus said, this is Jesus speaking,

  284. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

  285. For you build the tombs of the prophets

  286. and decorate the monuments of the righteous,

  287. saying this,

  288. If we had lived in the days of our fathers,

  289. we would not have taken part with them

  290. in shedding the blood of the prophets.

  291. So they recognized that their forefathers

  292. killed the men that God sent to warn them.

  293. And Jesus says,

  294. You build these tombs for them

  295. and you decorate them

  296. and you make these festivals around them

  297. and you acknowledge them, special days.

  298. And then you say pridefully

  299. that if we had lived at the time

  300. that our fathers did,

  301. we would have never done what they did.

  302. And notice what Jesus says next.

  303. Thus you witness against yourselves

  304. that you are the sons of those

  305. who murdered the prophets.

  306. Now notice what he says.

  307. This is what Paul's drawing from.

  308. Fill up then, he says,

  309. the measure of your fathers.

  310. You serpents,

  311. brood of vipers,

  312. how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?

  313. Now notice what Jesus says.

  314. Therefore, I am sending you prophets

  315. and wise men and scribes.

  316. And here's what you're gonna do.

  317. Some of them you will kill and crucify.

  318. Some you will flog in your synagogues

  319. and persecute from town to town

  320. so that on you may come

  321. all the righteous bloodshed on earth

  322. from the blood of the righteous Abel

  323. to the blood of Zechariah,

  324. the son of Berechiah,

  325. whom you murdered

  326. between the sanctuary and the altar.

  327. Truly I say to you,

  328. all these things will come upon this generation.

  329. So what is it that Jesus does?

  330. First he looks back

  331. and he says,

  332. look, this is what your forefathers did.

  333. This is what Israel has always done, he says.

  334. He says, God sends you his people.

  335. He sends you his messengers.

  336. They preach the gospel to you.

  337. They preach the word to you

  338. and they killed them.

  339. And now today you say

  340. that you would never do that.

  341. So let me tell you what I'm gonna do.

  342. I'm gonna send to you prophets

  343. and wise men and scribes

  344. and you're gonna do to them

  345. the same thing that your forefathers did

  346. to the ones that God sent to them.

  347. That's what he says.

  348. He is going to,

  349. they are going to fill up to the brim

  350. the measure of their father's sins.

  351. These wise men and prophets and scribes

  352. verse 34,

  353. they're the apostles.

  354. The prophets,

  355. the churches that Christ would use

  356. to spread his gospel around the world

  357. and Jesus prophesied

  358. that the Jews of his day

  359. would continue filling up

  360. the sins of their fathers

  361. who killed the prophets

  362. God sent to them

  363. and they will do it

  364. by crucifixion,

  365. by flogging,

  366. by persecuting those he sins.

  367. And what did Jesus say

  368. would be the result

  369. of this continued rejection

  370. of his gospel

  371. and of his people?

  372. They will not, quote,

  373. escape being sentenced to hell.

  374. This is what I think Paul is drawing from.

  375. They receive the word,

  376. Christ sends it to them.

  377. They reject the word,

  378. they reject the prophets,

  379. wrath.

  380. And the end is,

  381. the result,

  382. is hell.

  383. Eternal hell.

  384. Wrath.

  385. Now it's not very long after this

  386. that there was a man in Jerusalem

  387. named Stephen

  388. who preached this very gospel

  389. in Jerusalem

  390. after Jesus rose from the den

  391. and he was using the same themes

  392. as Jesus did.

  393. And at the very end of his sermon,

  394. notice what Stephen says

  395. in Acts chapter 7.

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  396. You stiff-necked

  397. people.

  398. He didn't mince words,

  399. did he?

  400. Now he's not just being a jerk.

  401. That's Old Testament language

  402. that God used

  403. to condemn Israel

  404. when they rebelled against them.

  405. And what Stephen's doing here

  406. is he's not just,

  407. not just trying to be a jerk

  408. to them.

  409. What he's doing

  410. is he's drawing on

  411. the parallels

  412. from the Old Testament

  413. from the sins

  414. of their fathers.

  415. And he says,

  416. you stiff-necked people,

  417. uncircumcised

  418. in heart and ears.

  419. You always resist

  420. the Holy Spirit.

  421. You keep doing it.

  422. As your fathers did,

  423. so do you.

  424. And which of the prophets

  425. did your fathers

  426. not persecute?

  427. They killed those

  428. who announced beforehand

  429. the coming of the righteous one

  430. whom you have now

  431. betrayed and murdered.

  432. Now notice what he says.

  433. You who received the law

  434. as delivered by angels

  435. and did not keep it.

  436. Now notice that last part again.

  437. They received the law,

  438. the word of God,

  439. but they did not keep it.

  440. Or in the language

  441. of 1 Thessalonians 2,

  442. they did not accept it.

  443. That sermon itself

  444. by Stephen,

  445. it was another

  446. gracious opportunity

  447. for the Jews present

  448. to turn from their sin

  449. and unbelief

  450. to trust Christ.

  451. But do you know

  452. what they did?

  453. They murdered Stephen instead.

  454. Doing just as Jesus

  455. prophesied they would do.

  456. He said,

  457. I'm going to send you prophets.

  458. You're going to have

  459. more opportunities

  460. to respond to the gospel message.

  461. And God sends them

  462. and they hear the message

  463. and they remain hardened

  464. in their heart

  465. to the message.

  466. And they kill God's prophet.

  467. But just as an aside here,

  468. if you need a ray of hope,

  469. there was another present

  470. who is said to have been

  471. consenting to Stephen's murder

  472. in that moment.

  473. later he would repent

  474. and believe.

  475. His name was Saul.

  476. We know him as Paul,

  477. the author of 1 Thessalonians.

  478. Now can we just say,

  479. if you were to look

  480. at that crowd,

  481. based on what we understand

  482. the scriptures to say,

  483. if you were to look

  484. at that crowd that day,

  485. of the people

  486. that were stoning Stephen

  487. and consenting to this murder,

  488. and you were to point out one

  489. and say there's no way

  490. that person will ever

  491. turn to Christ,

  492. Saul's probably the one

  493. you'd point to.

  494. He was a murderer.

  495. He thought on behalf of God

  496. he was doing God a favor

  497. by actually putting to death

  498. and imprisoning Christians

  499. who believed

  500. like Stephen believed.

  501. And all of us probably

  502. would look at him

  503. and say there's no way.

  504. There's no way

  505. he'd ever turn.

  506. And yet he's the one

  507. who turns.

  508. And here in 1 Thessalonians 2

  509. he's reflecting on all of this.

  510. But of course being underscored

  511. by the gospel.

  512. And so maybe there's somebody

  513. in your life

  514. and you've proclaimed

  515. to the gospel

  516. to them hundreds of times maybe.

  517. And they keep rejecting

  518. and they keep rejecting

  519. and they keep rejecting.

  520. Don't stop proclaiming.

  521. Don't stop.

  522. If Paul will turn,

  523. if God can transform him,

  524. surely he can transform

  525. your kids and your parents

  526. and your co-workers

  527. and your friends

  528. and the people that you love

  529. that are so hardened

  530. to the gospel now,

  531. just keep giving them the word.

  532. Isn't that what we learned

  533. last week in 13 and 14?

  534. That God works through the word.

  535. So what is it

  536. that is our responsibility?

  537. Give the word.

  538. Give the word.

  539. Give the gospel.

  540. That's what God uses.

  541. Just keep doing it.

  542. Just keep praying.

  543. Perhaps what you have

  544. is a song

  545. and God is prepared

  546. to transform them soon enough.

  547. Now back to 1 Thessalonians 2.

  548. What's Paul's point

  549. in saying all of this

  550. to the Thessalonians?

  551. What's the point

  552. in us taking so much time

  553. to think about it now?

  554. Again,

  555. it's to show Israel

  556. as the supreme example

  557. of receiving the gospel,

  558. the word of God,

  559. yet continually rejecting

  560. that truth

  561. through willful hardness of heart.

  562. it's a warning for us

  563. not to be like them.

  564. Now give me your attention.

  565. If you don't listen

  566. to anything else,

  567. listen to this.

  568. Give me your eyes.

  569. Old and young,

  570. teenagers,

  571. listen to what I'm telling you.

  572. This is a warning

  573. not to be like Israel.

  574. Some of you

  575. are dangerously close

  576. to being like Israel.

  577. Israel isn't the only privileged people

  578. in this sense.

  579. Every Sunday,

  580. there are people

  581. who sit in worship services

  582. like this one

  583. where the gospel of Jesus

  584. is proclaimed

  585. through preaching,

  586. it's praised through song,

  587. it's displayed

  588. through ordinances,

  589. ordinances,

  590. yet they continue

  591. to reject

  592. what they've been

  593. so privileged to receive

  594. so many times.

  595. And it's real easy

  596. to look at the Bible

  597. and say,

  598. how could Israel

  599. be so stupid

  600. after all of that

  601. and over and over,

  602. after all that privilege

  603. to still reject it

  604. and yet there's people

  605. who sit in churches

  606. like this every Sunday

  607. and they hear the gospel

  608. every Sunday

  609. over and over

  610. and over and over

  611. and they continue

  612. to reject it.

  613. They will not respond

  614. in repentance and faith.

  615. And here's the question.

  616. Is that you?

  617. Is it you?

  618. Because if it is,

  619. you can appropriately

  620. read yourself

  621. into this text here.

  622. You are filling up

  623. the measure of your sins

  624. and unbelief

  625. which will eventually

  626. spill over

  627. resulting in the eternal wrath

  628. of the Almighty God.

  629. The Word of God

  630. that you now reject

  631. that can save your soul

  632. is the same Word

  633. that will condemn you

  634. in the end.

  635. And what a shame

  636. it will have been

  637. to have heard

  638. the gospel message

  639. so often

  640. and still be condemned

  641. in the end.

  642. But it's a faith

  643. that you don't have

  644. to accept.

  645. There is hope for you

  646. now.

  647. Can I just read

  648. to you Romans 3?

  649. In fact,

  650. why don't you turn

  651. with me there?

  652. Turn with me

  653. to Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  654. Romans 3.

  655. Maybe you know

  656. this passage well.

  657. Romans chapter 3

    Romans 3:19

  658. verse 19.

  659. Now we know

  660. that whatever

  661. the law says

  662. it speaks to those

  663. who are under the law

  664. so that every mouth

  665. may be stopped

  666. and the whole world

  667. may be held accountable

  668. to God.

  669. Now what's Paul saying?

  670. He's saying nobody's

  671. without excuse.

  672. He's saying if you're

  673. a Jew

  674. or you have received

  675. the law

  676. or you've had opportunity

  677. you'll be condemned

  678. by that very law.

  679. It's the point

  680. that we're making

  681. from 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 2 chapter mention

  682. chapter 2 as well.

  683. That you will be held by it.

  684. You'll be held accountable

  685. to it.

  686. And every mouth

  687. will be stopped.

  688. Every mouth will be

  689. accountable to God.

  690. Verse 20.

  691. He acknowledges

  692. by works of the law

  693. no human being

  694. will be justified

  695. since it's through

  696. the law

  697. that comes the knowledge

  698. of sin.

  699. In other words

  700. if Israel

  701. couldn't do it

  702. through the law

  703. what hope do we have?

  704. What hope do we have?

  705. And the answer is

  706. before you get to verse 20

  707. you don't have any hope.

  708. You don't have any.

  709. On your own

  710. you have no hope.

  711. Oh but verse 20

  712. or 21

  713. it comes into play

  714. for us so helpfully

  715. doesn't it?

  716. But now

  717. the righteousness

  718. of God

  719. has been revealed

  720. apart from the law.

  721. Even though the law

  722. and the prophets

  723. testify to it

  724. it's the righteousness

  725. of God

  726. through faith

  727. in Jesus Christ

  728. for all who believe.

  729. For there's no distinction.

  730. All have sinned

  731. and fall short

  732. of the glory of God

  733. and all are justified

  734. by His grace

  735. as a gift

  736. through the redemption

  737. that is in Christ Jesus

  738. whom God put forward

  739. as a propitiation

  740. by His blood

  741. to be received

  742. by faith.

  743. This was to show

  744. God's righteousness

  745. because in His divine

  746. forbearance

  747. He passed over

  748. former sins.

  749. It was to show

  750. His righteousness

  751. at this present time

  752. so that He might be just

  753. in that He has condemned sin

  754. through Christ

  755. and He might be

  756. the justifier

  757. of the one

  758. who has faith

  759. in Jesus Christ.

  760. Now this is where

  761. your hope comes in.

  762. This is the gospel message

  763. that we're all broken

  764. we're all sinners

  765. we're all rebels

  766. that deserve to be condemned

  767. by the very word

  768. that we have rejected

  769. and yet Christ

  770. in the fullness of time

  771. as we're thinking

  772. about all month

  773. Christ in the fullness

  774. of time

  775. was sent by the Father

  776. born under the law

  777. to redeem those of us

  778. who are under the law.

  779. Why?

  780. So that He might make us

  781. adopted

  782. so that we might receive

  783. the adoption

  784. and how do we receive that?

  785. Well it's not because

  786. you go to church

  787. it's not because you give

  788. it's not because you do

  789. the charitable work

  790. that you do

  791. it's not because you go Friday

  792. to Operation Christmas Child

  793. and fill out

  794. fill out Christmas boxes

  795. it's not that

  796. it's all about

  797. faith in Christ.

  798. Christ has done it

  799. He's done it for you

  800. this is the message

  801. that the Jews rejected

  802. this is the message

  803. that you must accept

  804. you must accept it

  805. and why wouldn't you?

  806. Why wouldn't you?

  807. Come to Christ

  808. trust in Him

  809. what He's done for us

  810. on the cross

  811. Romans 3 is said

  812. to be a propitiation

  813. it has appeased

  814. the wrath of God

  815. that 1 Thessalonians 2 says

  816. has come upon the Jews

  817. who continue to reject

  818. the Christ

  819. but in Romans 3

  820. whether you're a Jew or not

  821. it has appeased

  822. the wrath of God

  823. if you will just

  824. come to Christ

  825. and believe it

  826. isn't that amazing?

  827. if you're alive

  828. and breathing right now

  829. it's not too late

  830. to repent

  831. and accept the good news

  832. of Jesus

  833. it's not too late

  834. how long

  835. you've rejected Him

  836. or even harmed His people

  837. or prevented others

  838. from hearing the gospel

  839. doesn't matter

  840. doesn't matter

  841. if you come to Him

  842. in faith

  843. at this moment

  844. now

  845. you will receive

  846. nothing

  847. but mercy

  848. mercy

  849. through Christ

  850. this is why

  851. we call it a gospel

  852. because it really is

  853. good news

  854. it's the best news

  855. oh don't reject it

  856. come to Him for it

  857. now

  858. let's just finish

  859. with three

  860. essential applications

  861. from 1 Thessalonians 2

  862. it's really just a summary

  863. of what we've already said

  864. first thing is this

  865. the opportunity

  866. to respond to the gospel

  867. is now

  868. it's now

  869. we live in a time

  870. of God's patience

  871. and grace

  872. don't we

  873. the fact that you're here

  874. today

  875. is a testament

  876. of God's

  877. gracious

  878. merciful work

  879. in your life

  880. you're here

  881. you hear the gospel again

  882. oh that's His goodness

  883. at work

  884. in your life

  885. now is the opportunity

  886. to respond

  887. don't be like Israel

  888. don't refuse

  889. every opportunity

  890. to be saved

  891. the time of judgment

  892. has not yet come

  893. now is the time

  894. to receive mercy

  895. and grace

  896. that's what Paul writes

  897. to the church in Corinth

  898. behold now is the favorable time

  899. now is the day of salvation

  900. don't wait

  901. second

  902. there is an end

  903. to God's patience

  904. toward those

  905. who reject His word

  906. there's an end

  907. it's a determined end

  908. decisive end

  909. you may feel at ease

  910. in the moment

  911. but judgment really is coming

  912. the glass just keeps filling up

  913. eventually

  914. it will spill over

  915. and all who refuse the gospel

  916. will face God's wrath

  917. and no one

  918. who's in this room

  919. this morning

  920. will be able to stand

  921. before God

  922. and say

  923. well nobody told me

  924. you'll be held accountable

  925. to the very word

  926. that you hear now

  927. so

  928. now's the time

  929. to respond

  930. don't wait

  931. because judgment

  932. does eventually come

  933. now

  934. for those of you

  935. who are Christians

  936. let's not forget

  937. that this whole

  938. section

  939. in this paragraph

  940. that flows out

  941. of the Thessalonians

  942. suffering for the gospel

  943. that's the context

  944. isn't it

  945. Paul goes on

  946. this little digression

  947. here as he's presenting

  948. to us the differences

  949. between the two groups

  950. we have those

  951. who accept the word

  952. and those who reject it

  953. so let's return

  954. to that first thought

  955. for those who accept it

  956. what was their experience

  957. suffering

  958. suffering

  959. hardship

  960. which is a reminder

  961. to us

  962. that to be a Christian

  963. what it means

  964. is to see

  965. the supreme

  966. value

  967. of Christ

  968. over everything else

  969. even your very life

  970. isn't that the testimony

  971. of the Thessalonians

  972. they willingly

  973. endured

  974. the suffering

  975. why

  976. because they saw

  977. Christ

  978. and his gospel

  979. as far more valuable

  980. than even their own lives

  981. and their own comfort

  982. isn't this what Jesus

  983. says

  984. in the parables

  985. of the kingdom

  986. when he says

  987. that the kingdom

  988. is like

  989. a man

  990. who's walking

  991. through the field

  992. and he finds a treasure

  993. that's of incalculable value

  994. and he goes

  995. and he sells

  996. everything that he has

  997. to buy that land

  998. in order that he can

  999. have that treasure

  1000. Jesus says

  1001. that's what I'm like

  1002. I'm the treasure

  1003. in the field

  1004. I'm more valuable

  1005. than anything else

  1006. what I offer you

  1007. is more valuable

  1008. than anything

  1009. you might try

  1010. to hold on to

  1011. in this life

  1012. we understand that

  1013. as believers

  1014. don't we

  1015. that's the work

  1016. of the word

  1017. at work in us

  1018. not only at conversion

  1019. but that's why

  1020. we keep coming back

  1021. to the gospel

  1022. isn't it

  1023. because when things

  1024. are hard

  1025. whether it be

  1026. through persecution

  1027. and suffering

  1028. at the hands

  1029. of unbelievers

  1030. or maybe it's just

  1031. the result of life

  1032. in a fallen world

  1033. we get sick

  1034. and we have pain

  1035. and we lose people

  1036. we love

  1037. death awaits

  1038. all of us

  1039. this life is hard

  1040. every day is hard

  1041. in some way

  1042. and some of you

  1043. know that

  1044. even more than

  1045. than others

  1046. you experience

  1047. it every day

  1048. why do we keep

  1049. coming back

  1050. to the gospel

  1051. as God's people

  1052. because in the pain

  1053. and in the suffering

  1054. and in the persecution

  1055. we're reminded

  1056. that Christ

  1057. is far more valuable

  1058. than any comfort

  1059. I might receive now

  1060. he's just better

1061. and I can endure it

  1062. because he's good

  1063. and he's gracious

1064. and he's gonna bring me home

1065. and when it brings me home

1066. I'll never have this pain again

  1067. I'm never gonna have

  1068. the sorrow again

1069. I'll never have to face

  1070. death again

1071. I'll never be broken again

  1072. he really is better

  1073. Christians know that

  1074. which is why

1075. when we do face suffering

  1076. the word of God

  1077. keeps working in us

  1078. to do what?

  1079. Causes us to persevere

  1080. isn't that the point

  1081. for the Thessalonians?

  1082. Isn't that why

  1083. Paul's thanking God?

  1084. I thank God

1085. that you've done this work

  1086. in the Thessalonian Christians

  1087. God

  1088. through your word

  1089. what work?

  1090. Persevering work

1091. that is based on the gospel

1092. so what do we learn

  1093. from that as Christians?

  1094. Oh Christian

  1095. we need the gospel

  1096. every day

  1097. every day

  1098. you need the gospel

  1099. can you just close

  1100. with reading a section

  1101. from Romans 8

1102. take this as an encouragement

  1103. Christian

1104. that those whom he predestined

  1105. he also called

  1106. those whom he called

  1107. he also justified

  1108. those whom he justified

  1109. he also glorified

1110. and what then shall we say

  1111. to these things?

1112. if God is for us

1113. who can be against us?

1114. He who did not spare

  1115. his own son

  1116. but gave him up

  1117. for us all

1118. how will he not also

  1119. with him graciously

  1120. give us all things?

1121. Who shall bring a charge

  1122. against God's elect?

  1123. It's God who justifies

1124. who is to condemn us?

1125. Christ Jesus is the one

  1126. who died

  1127. more than that

  1128. who was raised

1129. who is at the right hand of God

1130. who indeed is interceding for us

1131. and who shall separate us

1132. from the love of Christ?

  1133. Shall tribulation

  1134. or distress

  1135. or persecution

  1136. or famine

  1137. or nakedness

  1138. or danger

  1139. or sword?

  1140. No

1141. in all of these things

1142. we are more than conquerors

1143. through him who loves us

  1144. for I am sure

  1145. that neither death

  1146. nor life

  1147. nor angels

  1148. nor rulers

  1149. nor things present

  1150. nor things to come

  1151. nor powers

  1152. nor height

  1153. nor depth

  1154. nor anything else

  1155. in all creation

  1156. none of it

1157. will be able to separate us

1158. from the love of God

  1159. in Christ Jesus

  1160. our Lord

  1161. into that we say

  1162. Amen

  1163. Amen
