  1. At the end of eight days when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus,

  2. the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

  3. And when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses,

  4. they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.

  5. As it's written in the law of the Lord,

  6. every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord.

  7. And to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord,

  8. a pair of turtle doves or two young pigeons.

  9. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon,

  10. and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel.

  11. And the Holy Spirit was upon him.

  12. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death

  13. before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

  14. And he came in the Spirit into the temple,

  15. and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him according to the custom of the law,

  16. he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,

  17. Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace according to your word.

  18. For my eyes have seen your salvation.

  19. You have prepared in the presence of all peoples a light for revelation to the Gentiles

  20. and for glory to your people Israel.

  21. And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him.

  22. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,

  23. Behold, the child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel

  24. for a sign that is opposed.

  25. And a sword will pierce through your own soul also,

  26. so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.

  27. And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phineul, of the tribe of Asher.

  28. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin,

  29. and then as a widow until she was 84.

  30. She did not depart from the temple,

  31. worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day.

  32. And coming up at that very hour,

  33. she began to give thanks to God

  34. and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

  35. Amen.

  36. Well, it's that time of year when many of us, maybe all of us,

  37. set aside our regularly scheduled programming

  38. in order that we might indulge in our favorite Christmas movies.

  39. Perhaps you've been doing that for a little while already.

  40. From Bob Wallace to Kevin McAllister to Buddy the Elf,

  41. we will re-watch our favorite Christmas classics

  42. that we have seen countless times before.

  43. And one of our family's favorites,

  44. and one of the ones that we typically bring out every Christmas at some point,

  45. we've already done it once this Christmas season,

  46. is a Christmas story,

  47. which recounts the tale of little Ralphie

  48. and his pursuit of a Red Rider carbine action 200 shot range model air rifle

  49. that he continuously is told will shoot his eye out.

  50. Right?

  51. You know the story.

  52. It's the opening narrative of the movie

  53. that really just so helpfully summarizes the theme.

  54. The whole reason of the story really boils down to one thing.

  55. Here's what it says, the narrator, at the very beginning.

  56. Christmas was on its way.

  57. Lovely, glorious, beautiful Christmas

  58. around which the entire kid year revolved.

  59. That's basically the theme of the story, if you've seen it.

  60. Little Ralphie has waited all year.

  61. He's had his eye on that air rifle all year.

  62. And now it has come time.

  63. Christmas is almost there.

  64. And he hopes to receive what he's been looking for and asking for for so long.

  65. When you're a kid, the entire year does somewhat feel like a waiting period, doesn't it?

  66. The closer that December gets, the greater the anticipation builds.

  67. And it all culminates in the excitement of opening presents on Christmas morning.

  68. But long before Ralphie got his gun and Kevin was left home alone

  69. and being dreamt of a white Christmas,

  70. Christians were observing a season of waiting and anticipation known as Advent.

  71. Of course, Advent has fallen on hard times recently,

  72. but it's making a bit of a comeback in evangelical circles.

  73. And that's a good thing.

  74. Advent, of course, it means coming or arrival.

  75. In the Advent season, it puts us in the shoes of faithful Old Testament saints

  76. who patiently anticipated and awaited the coming of God's promised Messiah.

  77. The one who would bring eternal salvation,

  78. who would bring an eternal kingdom.

  79. To his people.

  80. This Savior King, Jesus, was born nearly 2,000 years ago now

  81. in the little town of Bethlehem in Judah.

  82. And Christians, New Testament saints,

  83. look back in celebration on that Advent,

  84. that coming, that arrival of Messiah,

  85. as we patiently anticipate a second Advent,

  86. the second coming of that same Savior King.

  87. So then we look back in faith,

  88. as we look forward in faith,

  89. and we wait.

  90. We wait.

  91. That's what Advent's about.

  92. Waiting.

  93. Anticipating.

  94. And perhaps no other biblical characters in the narratives of the Christmas story

  95. exemplify this spirit of Advent

  96. more than the two really obscure people

  97. that Luke refers to here in Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  98. Luke notes that both Simeon and Anna were waiting.

  99. They were longing for, hopefully,

  100. for the arrival of Messiah.

  101. You see it for Simeon in verse 25,

  102. if you just set your eye there.

  103. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon,

  104. and this man was righteous and devout,

  105. and he was waiting for the consolation of Israel.

  106. Consolation there,

  107. Luke is drawing on several passages in the prophet Isaiah,

  108. Messianic passages that speak of the comforting,

  109. the consolation,

  110. the salvation of God's people

  111. through this coming Savior King.

  112. He's drawing on that there.

  113. When we get to verse 38,

  114. we find that this is alluded to as well for Anna.

  115. After having waited and praying and fasting for many years,

  116. in verse 38,

  117. we're told that she came up at the very hour

  118. that she met Jesus and began to give thanks to God

  119. and to speak of him to all who were also waiting

  120. for the redemption of Jerusalem.

  121. So we get to these two characters.

  122. We get to these two historic people,

  123. and Luke notes them especially for their waiting,

  124. their longing.

  125. Simeon and Anna represent the last of the Old Testament saints

  126. who really did trust in God's promises,

  127. faithfully anticipating the coming of the Christ.

  128. They represent Israel,

  129. who long awaited the coming of the Son of David,

  130. who would sit on David's throne,

  131. not temporarily,

  132. but for eternity.

  133. They represent all of mankind in a sense,

  134. cursed by sin,

  135. that has longed for the restoration of God's people

  136. since the seed of the woman was promised

  137. to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

  138. Simeon and Anna then have a significant role

  139. in Luke's record of the gospel.

  140. They give witness to Jesus as the Messiah,

  141. and they provide a wonderful example to us

  142. of how as New Testament saints,

  143. we should follow their pattern as we wait,

  144. as we wait for Messiah to return.

  145. And this morning,

  146. maybe somewhat devotionally,

  147. I want us to take some time

  148. and meditate on their part in the Christmas story.

  149. Of course, the scene is set for us in verses 22 to 24.

  150. It's the 40th day since Mary gave birth to Jesus in Bethlehem,

  151. and Joseph has taken her the six-mile journey

  152. from Bethlehem to Jerusalem,

  153. and they're there for a specific purpose.

  154. God stipulated in the law

  155. that certain practices had to be observed

  156. following the birth of a child.

  157. Now, if you want to read about those,

  158. the references for that is Luke chapter,

  159. or excuse me, Leviticus chapter 12,

    Leviticus 12 chapter mention

  160. the entire chapter,

  161. or you can look at Exodus chapter 13,

    Exodus 13 chapter mention

  162. and you'll find it there as well.

  163. The first stipulation was circumcision

  164. for a male child on the eighth day,

  165. which was an important covenant sign

  166. for the people of Israel.

  167. The second requirement involved a period of purification

  168. during which the mother was considered

  169. ceremonially unclean.

  170. And that period of uncleanness

  171. lasted for 33 days

  172. following the circumcision of the male child.

  173. And at the end of those 40 combined days,

  174. there was the culmination of going to the temple

  175. and offering both a burnt offering

  176. in worship to God

  177. and a sin offering

  178. as an atonement,

  179. sign of atonement to God.

  180. The third law necessitated

  181. that the firstborn male

  182. be presented or dedicated to the Lord

  183. in reflection of Israel's exodus from Egypt.

  184. Now, in your own study,

  185. I'll trust you to do this,

  186. you will be wonderfully helped

  187. to go back and trace

  188. why God gave these three stipulations

  189. to his people.

  190. It wasn't just to hang a burden on their necks.

  191. There was important, significant,

  192. salvific symbolism

  193. in these three acts.

  194. And you will find it most encouraging

  195. to go back and research them.

  196. But the encounters that take place

  197. with Simeon and Anna

  198. here in this chapter,

  199. they occur as Joseph and Mary

  200. go to the temple complex

  201. in Jerusalem

  202. to perform these acts of worship.

  203. So before we actually get to Simeon and Anna,

  204. it would be worth our time

  205. to just take a moment

  206. and examine and reflect

  207. on Joseph and Mary's piety here.

  208. For Jesus to truly be the Savior,

  209. it was necessary

  210. that he perfectly fulfill God's commands

  211. as one, quote,

  212. born under the law.

  213. That's Galatians 4.

  214. In the fullness of time,

  215. God sent forth his Son,

  216. born of woman,

  217. born under the law,

  218. in order that he might redeem

  219. those who are under the law.

  220. This is an important facet of the gospel.

  221. It was necessary for Jesus

  222. to be the Savior

  223. that he truly fulfill

  224. all of God's commands.

  225. However, as a baby, an infant,

  226. how could he?

  227. His fulfillment of the law

  228. as an infant was out of his control.

  229. He couldn't circumcise himself.

  230. He couldn't present himself.

  231. Therefore, it was necessary

  232. that Joseph and Mary

  233. carefully fulfilled

  234. the requirements of the law

  235. related to the birth

  236. of their firstborn son.

  237. Had they not done so,

  238. we would not have grounds

  239. to say that Jesus truly is the Christ.

  240. We would not have grounds

  241. to affirm

  242. that his atonement on the cross

  243. was a sufficient atonement for us.

  244. This is important.

  245. It would be easy to pass over

  246. in a cursory reading of the text,

  247. but we ought not do that.

  248. Here's the thing.

  249. There is no indication

  250. that this specific purpose

  251. was in Joseph and Mary's minds

  252. as they obeyed God in this.

  253. Yes, the angel told them

  254. who the child was

  255. and what the child was to do.

  256. He didn't give a manual

  257. for how to raise the Son of God.

  258. He didn't give instructions

  259. beyond his birth.

  260. He didn't lay out everything

  261. that they were to do

  262. as parents of the Messiah.

  263. So you can imagine Mary

  264. even looking at Joseph, perhaps,

  265. in Bethlehem

  266. after Jesus is born

  267. and saying,

  268. what do we do now?

  269. What are we supposed to do?

  270. And perhaps in that moment,

  271. Joseph, who we know

  272. was a just man,

  273. according to Matthew,

  274. a righteous man,

  275. a faithful man,

  276. actually knew exactly what to do.

  277. They had all the instructions

  278. that they needed

  279. in the Word of God.

  280. And it was to God's Word

  281. that Joseph turned.

  282. And he said,

  283. we'll wait eight days

  284. and we'll make sure

  285. he's circumcised.

  286. That's what God has said to do.

  287. And then we'll go to Jerusalem

  288. a little while after

  289. and we'll do what God

  290. has told us to do there.

  291. Isn't that interesting?

  292. Amazing.

  293. Simple obedience.

  294. Their faithfulness to God

  295. was pivotal

  296. to the testimony

  297. of Jesus as Messiah.

  298. We tend to overcomplicate things,

  299. don't we?

  300. We tend to overcomplicate

  301. what it actually means

  302. to be faithful.

  303. When we can look at someone

  304. like Joseph and Mary

  305. and find that it's actually

  306. quite simple,

  307. at least theoretically it's simple.

  308. God has told us

  309. everything we need to know

  310. for salvation

  311. and for obedience to Him

  312. in the Bible.

  313. He's given us the instruction.

  314. He has revealed to us

  315. His desires.

  316. And the faithfulness

  317. that results in God's blessing

  318. and usefulness

  319. in God's purposes

  320. as we see

  321. in the life of Joseph

  322. and Mary.

  323. It really is as basic

  324. as studying the Bible

  325. and living according

  326. to what God has said

  327. therein.

  328. Sometimes we're looking

  329. for a custom-tailored plan

  330. for what we are to do

  331. with our lives

  332. and the decisions

  333. that we are to make

  334. and you really ought not

  335. look for that.

  336. You just need to trust

  337. the Lord

  338. that He's in control

  339. of your life.

  340. You need to obey

  341. what He's told you

  342. because you know

  343. what that is

  344. and you have access to it.

  345. And then exercise wisdom

  346. as you walk in the Spirit.

  347. Now this was so important

  348. for Joseph and Mary.

  349. It's so important

  350. for you and I.

  351. In addition to ensuring

  352. that the baby Jesus

  353. fulfilled the law's demands,

  354. something that perhaps

  355. they didn't even

  356. weren't consciously aware of

  357. and necessitating,

  358. maybe they were,

  359. maybe they were,

  360. we don't know.

  361. But in addition to all of that,

  362. their obedience resulted

  363. in these encounters

  364. with so many different people,

  365. in these encounters

  366. with Simeon and Anna,

  367. which probably likely became

  368. such an affirming moment

  369. for them in the plan of God.

  370. In fact,

  371. we're told in the middle

  372. of the text

  373. that they marveled

  374. at what was said.

  375. We love when people

  376. compliment our kids,

  377. don't we?

  378. Ashlyn played

  379. an orchestra concert,

  380. Christmas concert yesterday

  381. in Statesville

  382. and some of our family

  383. was there

  384. and some of you

  385. were there

  386. and showed up

  387. and we love that.

  388. We love when people

  389. come up to our kids

  390. and they say,

  391. oh, you did such a good job

  392. in the violin yesterday.

  393. That makes us feel good,

  394. doesn't it?

  395. Makes them feel good,

  396. makes us as parents feel good.

  397. Here's Joseph and Mary.

  398. They've got their baby boy

  399. in the temple

  400. and here comes

  401. two righteous,

  402. devout people

  403. and they say

  404. such wonderful things

  405. about the child.

  406. And what is it

  407. that Mary and Joseph do?

  408. They marvel at it.

  409. Wow.

  410. Wow.

  411. What an affirming moment

  412. for them.

  413. And what is it the fruit of?

  414. It's the fruit of their obedience.

  415. Just simple,

  416. faithful obedience

  417. to the Lord.

  418. And we should expect

  419. that upon sending

  420. his son to us

  421. that God would supply

  422. witnesses

  423. to testify

  424. to Jesus' identity

  425. and purpose.

  426. Throughout the Christmas narratives,

  427. whether you're looking

  428. in Matthew's gospel

  429. or in Luke's gospel,

  430. you'll find it the same.

  431. Throughout,

  432. we find various witnesses

  433. who have established

  434. the true nature

  435. of the Christ,

  436. the true nature

  437. of this child.

  438. And we can think of them,

  439. we think of Joseph and Mary,

  440. of course,

  441. but then what about

  442. Zechariah and Elizabeth

  443. and the baby John

  444. leaping in the womb?

  445. What are they doing?

  446. What is that all about?

  447. Why does Matthew bother

  448. to tell us that

  449. or Luke bother

  450. to tell us about that?

  451. Because they are witnesses

  452. to the Christ.

  453. Then we find the shepherds

  454. near Bethlehem.

  455. An amazing miracle

  456. happens with them as well.

  457. They see the angels.

  458. They hear the proclamation.

  459. What do they do?

  460. They make haste.

  461. They run to Bethlehem

  462. and they find it

  463. just as the angels

  464. had told them.

  465. And then they go

  466. throughout the land

  467. spreading the news.

  468. Why?

  469. Why does Luke bother

  470. to tell us about that

  471. in Luke chapter 2?

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  472. Because they're witnesses

  473. of the Messiah.

  474. Then there's the Magi

  475. from the east,

  476. stargazers.

  477. They see the star.

  478. They make their way

  479. toward Israel.

  480. They find the child

  481. ultimately

  482. and they bring him gifts.

  483. Why do we need

  484. to know that?

  485. That's Matthew chapter 2.

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  486. They were witnesses

  487. to the Messiah

  488. of the Christ.

  489. Now here's the thing

  490. that all of these people

  491. have in common.

  492. From a human perspective,

  493. they are among

  494. the unlikeliest

  495. of candidates

  496. to be such witnesses.

  497. The Magi

  498. from the east,

  499. they're Gentiles.

  500. We don't even know

  501. that they're really believers.

  502. But God uses them

  503. in that moment

  504. as a testimony

  505. to the person

  506. of Jesus Christ.

  507. what Jew

  508. is going to hear

  509. their testimony

  510. and believe it.

  511. But it wasn't very different

  512. for the shepherds either.

  513. They had such a reputation

  514. at the time

  515. that all of this

  516. was unfolding

  517. in the first century.

  518. They had such a reputation

  519. that you couldn't even

  520. accept a shepherd's testimony

  521. in a legal proceeding

  522. as admissible.

  523. They wouldn't even

  524. receive it

  525. simply because

  526. the reputation

  527. of the shepherds

  528. was so poor.

  529. And yet that's

  530. who God uses

  531. as a witness

  532. of his Messiah.

  533. Zechariah and Elizabeth

  534. are a bit different,

  535. aren't they?

  536. They're faithful.

  537. They're holy people.

  538. And yet there's a miracle

  539. that God does with them

  540. as one of their

  541. unlikely candidates.

  542. Well, Simeon and Anna,

  543. they fit the bill

  544. for unexpected witnesses

  545. to the advent

  546. of the Christ.

  547. There's nothing

  548. especially noteworthy

  549. about them.

  550. There's no miracle

  551. associated

  552. with their introduction

  553. to Jesus

  554. as there was

  555. the other witnesses.

  556. Simeon and Anna

  557. were ordinary people.

  558. But in terms

  559. of their faith,

  560. there was nothing

  561. ordinary about them.

  562. They were extraordinary.

  563. Like Zechariah

  564. and Elizabeth,

  565. they were part

  566. of that final generation

  567. of old covenant saints

  568. justified by faith

  569. in the promise

  570. of God's Messiah.

  571. And their lives

  572. reflected

  573. that saving faith.

  574. Simeon was known

  575. for his righteousness

  576. and devotion

  577. to God.

  578. Because he believed God,

  579. he lived in holiness,

  580. faithfully worshipped

  581. the Lord.

  582. That's an example

  583. for us.

  584. We just looked at it

  585. in 1 Peter 2

  586. a few moments ago.

  587. What does it mean

  588. to live in righteousness?

  589. Well, it's a reflection

  590. on who you are

  591. in Christ.

  592. It is a result

  593. of a faith

  594. in God

  595. and God's promised Messiah

  596. that leads

  597. to that kind

  598. of conduct

  599. and behavior.

  600. And that's the example

  601. that Simeon gives us.

  602. Anna was the same.

  603. Righteous and devout

  604. may not be words

  605. used to describe her

  606. in the text,

  607. but what is said

  608. about her shows

  609. that righteous devotion

  610. was indeed her reality.

  611. Because she believed God,

  612. she spent the majority

  613. of her life,

  614. her very long life,

  615. in worship,

  616. fasting,

  617. and prayer.

  618. Over what?

  619. The Messiah

  620. that she trusted

  621. would come

  622. and bring salvation.

  623. And why did she

  624. trust that?

  625. How could she trust that?

  626. God's been silent

  627. for at least 400 years.

  628. Oh, she trusted

  629. what God said before.

  630. And because she believed God,

  631. she worshipped,

  632. she fasted,

  633. she prayed,

  634. she waited.

  635. But all of Simeon

  636. and Anna's faithful devotion

  637. is revealed

  638. in their waiting.

  639. They longed for God

  640. to send the Christ

  641. in their lifetime

  642. and because of that,

  643. God gave them

  644. the blessing

  645. of being key witnesses

  646. of the birth

  647. of his Messiah.

  648. Not because there was

  649. something significant

  650. about them,

  651. but just like Joseph

  652. and Mary,

  653. they were just ordinary people

  654. with an extraordinary faith

  655. and God blessed it.

  656. And they became witnesses

  657. of the Christ.

  658. And the witness

  659. of Simeon and Anna,

  660. it isn't simply

  661. the acknowledgement

  662. that a child was born.

  663. The text refers

  664. to both of them

  665. as prophets of God,

  666. those chosen by God

  667. to declare his word

  668. and reveal his truth.

  669. We don't know

  670. if they were regarded

  671. as prophets

  672. before this moment.

  673. The fact is

  674. that's probably

  675. very unlikely.

  676. Their status

  677. as prophets

  678. probably applies

  679. specifically to this

  680. this encounter.

  681. Think about that.

  682. In other words,

  683. God chose them

  684. as his witnesses

  685. for this moment

  686. in redemptive history

  687. and their righteous devotion

  688. gave credibility

  689. to their prophecy.

  690. How wonderful

  691. to be mightily used

  692. by God

  693. if even just once

  694. in your lifetime,

  695. if even just once

  696. in your life

  697. to be a prophet

  698. in the sense

  699. of proclaiming

  700. the gospel of God

  701. so that it affects others

  702. and God uses

  703. your witness

  704. in that way.

  705. That's what's happening

  706. with Simeon and Anna.

  707. How wonderful of a thing.

  708. Nothing is quoted

  709. from Anna

  710. in the text.

  711. We only know

  712. that God revealed

  713. to her

  714. the child's identity

  715. because she

  716. subsequently rejoiced

  717. and shared the news

  718. with others.

  719. The fact that

  720. her declaration

  721. was prophetic

  722. is seen simply

  723. in the fact

  724. that Luke calls her

  725. a prophetess.

  726. Makes it pretty easy

  727. to figure out.

  728. Now much more

  729. is recorded for us

  730. about Simeon.

  731. That's where we'll spend

  732. the rest of our time.

  733. He was empowered

  734. by the Holy Spirit

  735. for this moment

  736. we're told.

  737. The Spirit prepared him

  738. ahead of time

  739. telling him

  740. what would take place.

  741. Revealing that he would

  742. see the Christ

  743. before his death.

  744. We don't know

  745. how long he was

  746. aware of that.

  747. Perhaps he was only

  748. aware of it

  749. that day.

  750. We don't know.

  751. But at some point

  752. he had operated

  753. with this understanding

  754. eagerly anticipating

  755. meeting the Lord's Christ.

  756. And when that moment

  757. finally arrived

  758. God used Simeon

  759. to prophesy

  760. about Jesus'

  761. purpose

  762. the purpose of the child

  763. to bring salvation.

  764. Let's just look

  765. what he said.

  766. Look with me again

  767. at verses 28 to 33

  768. first.

  769. Simeon took him

  770. up in his arms

  771. took Jesus up

  772. in his arms

  773. and blessed God

  774. and said

  775. Lord

  776. now you're letting

  777. your servant

  778. depart in peace

  779. according to your word.

  780. For my eyes

  781. have seen

  782. your salvation

  783. that you have

  784. prepared in the

  785. presence of all peoples

  786. a light for revelation

  787. to the Gentiles

  788. and for glory

  789. to your people Israel.

  790. And his father

  791. and his mother

  792. marveled at what

  793. was said about you.

  794. Isn't it interesting

  795. here that upon

  796. seeing the child

  797. Simeon says

  798. that he's now

  799. ready to die.

  800. Is that what he says?

  801. Lord now you're

  802. letting your servant

  803. depart in peace.

  804. He doesn't say

  805. anything about death

  806. there.

  807. We make that connection

  808. because what has

  809. just been told to us

  810. that the spirit

  811. came and said

  812. hey you're not

  813. going to die

  814. until you see the Christ

  815. and now he sees the Christ

  816. and he says okay

  817. I'm ready to die.

  818. That's interesting isn't it?

  819. Why would he say that?

  820. Wouldn't it make more sense

  821. for Simeon to want

  822. to live longer

  823. so that he might see

  824. what would become

  825. of the child?

  826. Simeon's response

  827. however it reflects

  828. the depth of his faith

  829. doesn't it?

  830. These are not words

  831. of a man

  832. who simply wished

  833. that the child

  834. would be the one

  835. to bring salvation.

  836. This is someone

  837. who was entirely

  838. convinced of it.

  839. In fact

  840. he's so convinced

  841. so assured

  842. that his eternal salvation

  843. would come through

  844. this baby

  845. that it gave him

  846. complete peace

  847. to go on to death.

  848. Is that not the picture

  849. of saving faith?

  850. That we're so trusting

  851. in the person

  852. and the work

  853. of Jesus Christ

  854. that we know

  855. how to face death

  856. with peace.

  857. Being assured

  858. of the fact

  859. that our eternal soul

  860. rests in the grace

  861. and mercy

  862. of the Lord Jesus.

  863. Isn't that what

  864. Simeon is indicating here?

  865. He doesn't have

  866. to see the cross.

  867. He doesn't have

  868. to see anything

  869. else.

  870. He's so convinced

  871. in his faith

  872. this is Messiah.

  873. Lord now bring me home.

  874. You have fulfilled

  875. your word

  876. to me.

  877. Oh what an example

  878. for us

  879. to trust Jesus

  880. so much

  881. that upon coming

  882. to Christ

  883. we can say

  884. I can die

  885. in peace now.

  886. And we can say that

  887. because it's the truth.

  888. It's the reality

  889. of our position

  890. of our position

  891. in Christ.

  892. It is one of peace

  893. with God.

  894. Now according

  895. to Simeon's

  896. prophetic blessing

  897. the salvation

  898. Jesus would bring

  899. was expansive.

  900. It included more

  901. than just those

  902. who belong to Israel.

  903. He says that

  904. this salvation

  905. has been prepared

  906. before the eyes

  907. of all peoples.

  908. Jesus is the light

  909. of revelation

  910. to the Gentiles

  911. who had not

  912. received God's

  913. revelation

  914. as had the Jews.

  915. Think about that.

  916. They didn't have

  917. the word.

  918. They didn't have

  919. the promises.

  920. They didn't have

  921. the covenant.

  922. They didn't have

  923. the worship

  924. that all pointed

  925. toward this Messiah.

  926. They didn't have

  927. that.

  928. But they could

  929. look to Christ

  930. and they saw

  931. the revelation

  932. of God in Christ.

  933. Oh it's wonderful.

  934. Looking to Jesus

  935. even non-Jews

  936. would see the nature

  937. and salvation

  938. of Almighty God.

  939. Through Jesus

  940. all who repent

  941. and believe

  942. whether Jew

  943. or Gentile

  944. would be saved.

  945. Jesus is also

  946. the glory of Israel.

  947. At least for those

  948. who believe.

  949. There was so much

  950. for the Jews

  951. to glory in

  952. wasn't there.

  953. They could glory

  954. in the law.

  955. They could glory

  956. in the Exodus.

  957. They could glory

  958. in the prophets.

  959. They could glory

  960. in the temple.

  961. They had so much.

  962. And yet Simeon

  963. reminds us here

  964. that for those

  965. who believe

  966. the true glory

  967. of Israel

  968. is the Christ.

  969. Supersedes

  970. all of those things.

  971. Isn't that what

  972. the writer of Hebrews

  973. is intent to tell us?

  974. That Jesus

  975. is better

  976. than all of it.

  977. All of it

  978. is a shadow

  979. that's pointing

  980. forward to him.

  981. Simeon realizes that.

  982. He says,

  983. oh, this child,

  984. this child

  985. is the glory

  986. of Israel

  987. more than anything

  988. else we would

  989. pride ourselves in.

  990. Simeon's blessing,

  991. it declares

  992. the identity

  993. of the child

  994. and that he is

  995. the Christ.

  996. But it's his

  997. prophetic words

  998. to Mary

  999. that actually

  1000. reveal the child's

  1001. purpose.

  1002. Look at verse

  1003. 34 and 35.

  1004. after Simeon's

  1005. song as it's

  1006. known,

  1007. Simeon blessed

  1008. them and he said

  1009. especially to Mary,

  1010. behold,

  1011. this child is

  1012. appointed for the

  1013. fall and rising

  1014. of many in Israel

  1015. and for a sign

  1016. that is opposed.

  1017. A sword will

  1018. pierce through

  1019. your own soul

  1020. also so that

  1021. faults from many

  1022. hearts may be

  1023. revealed.

  1024. Appointed

  1025. is the key word

  1026. here.

  1027. It tells us

  1028. that what

  1029. follows is

  1030. Jesus' purpose,

  1031. what God has

  1032. chosen him to

  1033. be and to

  1034. do.

  1035. First,

  1036. we find in

  1037. Simeon's prophecy

  1038. Jesus is the

  1039. Lord who will

  1040. judge us all.

  1041. With his

  1042. judgment,

  1043. Jesus will

  1044. cause those

  1045. who persist

  1046. in prideful

  1047. unbelief

  1048. to fall

  1049. and those

  1050. who persist

  1051. in humble

  1052. faith

  1053. to be exalted.

  1054. But then he

  1055. says Jesus

  1056. is also a

  1057. sign,

  1058. a sign that

  1059. will be

  1060. opposed by

  1061. many.

  1062. And what

  1063. is the

  1064. sign?

  1065. Jesus himself

  1066. tells us.

  1067. In Matthew

    Matthew 12:39

  1068. chapter 12

  1069. verses 39

  1070. and 40,

  1071. the Jews

  1072. demanded of

  1073. Jesus a

  1074. sign and

  1075. here's how

  1076. he answered.

  1077. He answered

  1078. them,

  1079. an evil and

  1080. an adulterous

  1081. generation seeks

  1082. for a sign.

  1083. In other words,

  1084. an evil and

  1085. adulterous

  1086. generation looks

  1087. at the Messiah

  1088. and says,

  1089. prove it again.

  1090. But no sign

  1091. will be given

  1092. to it except

  1093. the sign of

  1094. the prophet

  1095. Jonah.

  1096. For just

  1097. as Jonah

  1098. was three

  1099. days and

  1100. three nights

  1101. in the belly

  1102. of the great

  1103. fish,

  1104. so will the

  1105. Son of Man

  1106. be three days

  1107. and three nights

  1108. in the heart

  1109. of the earth.

  1110. What's the

  1111. sign?

  1112. Death

  1113. is the

  1114. sign.

  1115. Not just

  1116. death.

  1117. The sign of

  1118. Jonah is not

  1119. just death.

  1120. It is a

  1121. temporary death,

  1122. isn't it?

  1123. Only three

  1124. days and

  1125. three nights

  1126. will he

  1127. remain in

  1128. the heart

  1129. of the

  1130. earth.

  1131. Oh,

  1132. it also

  1133. is a

  1134. sign of

  1135. resurrection,

  1136. neither of

  1137. which was

  1138. acceptable to

  1139. the Jews

  1140. who demanded

  1141. these signs.

  1142. Jesus says

  1143. it again in

  1144. John chapter

  1145. three,

  1146. uses a

  1147. different

  1148. illustration

  1149. here.

  1150. John

  1151. chapter

  1152. three in

  1153. verse

  1154. 14,

  1155. as Moses

  1156. lifted up

  1157. the serpent

  1158. in the

  1159. wilderness,

  1160. so must

  1161. the Son of

  1162. Man be

  1163. lifted up,

  1164. that whoever

  1165. believes in

  1166. him may

  1167. have eternal

  1168. life.

  1169. That's a

  1170. reference to

  1171. an event in

  1172. Israel's history

  1173. as they

  1174. wandered in

  1175. the desert,

  1176. they disobeyed

  1177. God,

  1178. God sent

  1179. fiery serpents,

  1180. and then God

  1181. told Moses to

  1182. make a bronze

  1183. serpent,

  1184. to put it up

  1185. on a post,

  1186. and those who

  1187. were bitten by

  1188. the fiery

  1189. serpents,

  1190. if they just

  1191. looked up to

  1192. the provision

  1193. of God,

  1194. that's the

  1195. symbol,

  1196. look up to

  1197. the provision

  1198. of God,

  1199. what God

  1200. has given

  1201. them for

  1202. healing,

  1203. that they

  1204. would then

  1205. be healed.

  1206. Jesus reflects

  1207. on that in

  1208. his conversation

  1209. with Nicodemus,

  1210. and he says,

  1211. just like Moses

  1212. hung that

  1213. snake up on

  1214. the pole,

  1215. and people

  1216. looked to

  1217. that for

  1218. their healing

  1219. from God,

  1220. so must the

  1221. Son of Man

  1222. be lifted up,

  1223. so that those

  1224. who look to

  1225. him will find

  1226. true healing.

  1227. What's the

  1228. sign?

  1229. The sign

  1230. that is

  1231. opposed is

  1232. the cross

  1233. of Christ.

  1234. What Paul

  1235. said was a

  1236. stumbling block

  1237. to the Jews,

  1238. what he said

  1239. was foolishness

  1240. to the Gentiles,

  1241. and both Jews

  1242. and Gentiles

  1243. refused to

  1244. believe in a

  1245. Lord and

  1246. Savior who

  1247. would be

  1248. revealed in

  1249. such weakness,

  1250. dying a

  1251. criminal's

  1252. death.

  1253. But to

  1254. those who

  1255. have eyes

  1256. to see,

  1257. it is the

  1258. good news

  1259. of how God

  1260. has brought

  1261. salvation to

  1262. sinners through

  1263. Jesus Christ.

  1264. This child

  1265. in Simeon's

  1266. arms is the

  1267. sinless one.

  1268. He's the

  1269. sinless one who

  1270. died as a

  1271. criminal so

  1272. that trespassers

  1273. of the law

  1274. like you

  1275. and me

  1276. might be

  1277. forgiven

  1278. and counted

  1279. righteous before

  1280. God.

  1281. And how we

  1282. respond to

  1283. the sign of

  1284. the cross,

  1285. either in

  1286. faith or in

  1287. unbelief,

  1288. will be

  1289. exposed at the

  1290. final judgment

  1291. of the Lord

  1292. Jesus.

  1293. That's the end

  1294. of the prophecy,

  1295. isn't it?

  1296. This sign will

  1297. be opposed.

  1298. the process

  1299. of that sign

  1300. being carried

  1301. out would be

  1302. a sword

  1303. through the

  1304. soul of

  1305. Mary as

  1306. she watched

  1307. her own

  1308. son be

  1309. murdered.

  1310. But then in

  1311. the very end,

  1312. what does all

  1313. of this

  1314. accomplish?

  1315. That many

  1316. hearts will be

  1317. exposed,

  1318. many hearts

  1319. will be

  1320. revealed.

  1321. What does

  1322. that mean?

  1323. That it is on

  1324. the basis of

  1325. what we do

  1326. with the sign

  1327. that Christ,

  1328. the judge,

  1329. will judge

  1330. us.

  1331. Simeon and

  1332. Anna, by

  1333. God's grace,

  1334. had eyes to

  1335. see.

  1336. And they

  1337. rejoiced in

  1338. the advent of

  1339. God's salvation,

  1340. the baby Jesus.

  1341. They're witnesses

  1342. of the Messiah.

  1343. And each of us

  1344. will be held

  1345. accountable to

  1346. their testimony.

  1347. For Simeon and

  1348. Anna, the wait

  1349. was over.

  1350. As it regards

  1351. our salvation,

  1352. the wait can

  1353. be over for

  1354. you as well.

  1355. If you look

  1356. to the sign

  1357. and believe,

  1358. if you look

  1359. to the cross

  1360. and trust

  1361. in him

  1362. and what

  1363. he's done,

  1364. the wait

  1365. will be over

  1366. for you too.

  1367. Now I want

  1368. to finish

  1369. with one

  1370. other thing.

  1371. Just as

  1372. Simeon and

  1373. Anna faithfully

  1374. longed for the

  1375. advent of Christ,

  1376. so are we

  1377. as Christians

  1378. to faithfully

  1379. long for

  1380. his second

  1381. advent?

  1382. Jesus is

  1383. coming back.

  1384. The word

  1385. testifies to

  1386. that again

  1387. and again.

  1388. He will

  1389. return.

  1390. And we

  1391. await that

  1392. moment like

  1393. Ralphie

  1394. awaited Christmas

  1395. morning to get

  1396. his Red

  1397. Rider BB

  1398. gun.

  1399. with great

  1400. anticipation.

  1401. We long

  1402. that he would

  1403. come back.

  1404. Using a

  1405. parable,

  1406. Jesus said

  1407. that all

  1408. who faithfully

  1409. await his

  1410. return will be

  1411. blessed.

  1412. This is in

  1413. Luke chapter

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  1414. 12.

  1415. Jesus said,

  1416. blessed are

  1417. those servants

  1418. whom the

  1419. master finds

  1420. awake when

  1421. he comes.

  1422. Truly I say

  1423. to you,

  1424. he will dress

  1425. himself for

  1426. service and

  1427. he will have

  1428. them recline

  1429. at table and

  1430. he will come

  1431. and serve them.

  1432. That's all

  1433. indication of

  1434. blessing and

  1435. eternity in the

  1436. kingdom.

  1437. And if he

  1438. comes in the

  1439. second watch or

  1440. in the third

  1441. watch or whatever

  1442. watch and he

  1443. finds them awake,

  1444. blessed are those

  1445. servants, Jesus

  1446. says.

  1447. What's he saying?

  1448. He's saying that

  1449. we must await him

  1450. as Simeon and

  1451. Anna awaited him.

  1452. they show us

  1453. what it looks

  1454. like to

  1455. faithfully

  1456. wait so

  1457. that we

  1458. too might

  1459. be blessed

  1460. by God

  1461. in the way

  1462. that they

  1463. were blessed

  1464. by God.

  1465. And so let

  1466. me close by

  1467. just highlighting

  1468. some features

  1469. of their example

  1470. that we can

  1471. apply to our

  1472. own Christian

  1473. waiting for

  1474. the return of

  1475. Christ.

  1476. Our waiting

  1477. should be marked

  1478. by five things.

  1479. First,

  1480. it should be

  1481. marked by

  1482. faith.

  1483. Indeed,

  1484. faith is the

  1485. root of their

  1486. longing.

  1487. Without faith

  1488. and trust in

  1489. God and his

  1490. word,

  1491. there would be

  1492. no longing.

  1493. There would be

  1494. no waiting for

  1495. Simeon and

  1496. Anna.

  1497. They fully

  1498. trusted God's

  1499. word.

  1500. So should we

  1501. trust based on

  1502. the first

  1503. advent that the

  1504. second advent

  1505. is coming.

  1506. Trust it

  1507. wholeheartedly.

  1508. And it is in

  1509. that faith that

  1510. the Lord will

  1511. create the

  1512. longing.

  1513. So our

  1514. waiting should

  1515. be marked by

  1516. faith.

  1517. Number two,

  1518. our waiting

  1519. should be

  1520. marked by

  1521. righteousness.

  1522. It should be

  1523. marked by

  1524. righteousness.

  1525. How are we

  1526. to live as

  1527. we wait for

  1528. the Lord?

  1529. Righteously.

  1530. That was

  1531. Peter's testimony

  1532. in 1 Peter 2.

  1533. That we

  1534. abstain from

  1535. the deeds of

  1536. the flesh.

  1537. That we

  1538. pursue Christ

  1539. and his glory

  1540. and the glory

  1541. of God in

  1542. the world.

  1543. That we

  1544. live honorably

  1545. according to

  1546. what God

  1547. has told us

  1548. to do.

  1549. Our faith

  1550. must be

  1551. reflected in

  1552. our obedience.

  1553. Isn't that

  1554. what was true

  1555. of Joseph

  1556. and Mary?

  1557. They trusted

  1558. the word of

  1559. God so they

  1560. obeyed the

  1561. word of God

  1562. in the way

  1563. that they

  1564. handled their

  1565. baby.

  1566. It's true of

  1567. Simeon and

  1568. Anna.

  1569. They trusted

  1570. God and they

  1571. were both

  1572. acknowledged for

  1573. their righteousness

  1574. and that

  1575. righteousness was

  1576. the overflow

  1577. of their faith

  1578. not the cause

  1579. of it.

  1580. It was the

  1581. fruit of it.

  1582. Thirdly,

  1583. our waiting

  1584. should be

  1585. marked by

  1586. devotion.

  1587. Devotion.

  1588. Simeon and

  1589. Anna gave

  1590. their lives

  1591. to worship

  1592. and we

  1593. must not

  1594. forsake that

  1595. worship.

  1596. Whether it

  1597. be the

  1598. worship in

  1599. our private

  1600. devotion to

  1601. the Lord

  1602. day by day

  1603. or it

  1604. be in

  1605. obedience to

  1606. the gathered

  1607. church in

  1608. worship Sunday

  1609. by Sunday.

  1610. We must

  1611. live as we

  1612. wait devoted

  1613. to worship

  1614. not being

  1615. distracted by

  1616. the things of

  1617. this world

  1618. but devoting

  1619. ourselves

  1620. wholeheartedly

  1621. giving ourselves

  1622. wholeheartedly

  1623. to the worship

  1624. of God.

  1625. Fourth,

  1626. our waiting

  1627. should be

  1628. marked by

  1629. focus.

  1630. By focus.

  1631. Isn't that

  1632. an implication

  1633. of Simeon

  1634. and Anna's

  1635. example?

  1636. people,

  1637. they weren't

  1638. distracted by

  1639. the world.

  1640. They weren't

  1641. distracted by

  1642. this life to

  1643. the extent

  1644. that they

  1645. always had an

  1646. eye on what

  1647. was to come.

  1648. For them,

  1649. as old covenant

  1650. believers,

  1651. what was to

  1652. come for them

  1653. was that first

  1654. advent.

  1655. It's different

  1656. for us.

  1657. We have so

  1658. much more

  1659. opportunity than

  1660. they do.

  1661. We have so

  1662. much more

  1663. revelation than

  1664. they do,

  1665. don't we?

  1666. In the new

  1667. covenant.

  1668. it's so easy

  1669. for us to be

  1670. distracted by

  1671. the cares of

  1672. this life.

  1673. Let me just

  1674. ask you,

  1675. when's the

  1676. last time

  1677. that you

  1678. thought,

  1679. today,

  1680. I'm going to

  1681. live in light

  1682. of the coming

  1683. of Christ?

  1684. Today,

  1685. I'm going to

  1686. look for

  1687. Christ.

  1688. Today,

  1689. I'm going to

  1690. make sure that

  1691. my life is

  1692. focused on that

  1693. heavenly citizenship

  1694. that is to

  1695. come.

  1696. Most of us

  1697. probably don't

  1698. think that way

  1699. very often,

  1700. but that was

  1701. true of Simeon

  1702. and Anna's

  1703. life.

  1704. Anna lived

  1705. at the

  1706. temple.

  1707. She worshipped.

  1708. She fasted.

  1709. She prayed.

  1710. She always had

  1711. an eye on

  1712. what was to

  1713. come.

  1714. Simeon always

  1715. had an eye on

  1716. what was to

  1717. come.

  1718. And it's time

  1719. for us to get

  1720. our eyes off

  1721. of this life

  1722. and really

  1723. intentionally as

  1724. Christ people,

  1725. to have an

  1726. eye on what

  1727. is to come,

  1728. to live in

  1729. light of the

  1730. glory that

  1731. is to come

  1732. when Christ

  1733. returns.

  1734. Fifthly,

  1735. our waiting

  1736. should be

  1737. marked by

  1738. evangelism.

  1739. Evangelism.

  1740. They shared

  1741. the good news

  1742. of Christ

  1743. coming with

  1744. others.

  1745. It's plain

  1746. in the text.

  1747. Simeon

  1748. excitedly,

  1749. it doesn't

  1750. tell us how

  1751. old he is.

  1752. We gather

  1753. because of

  1754. the whole

  1755. scenario

  1756. with his

  1757. death and

  1758. the language

  1759. of his

  1760. death.

  1761. We gather

  1762. that maybe

  1763. he was

  1764. advanced in

  1765. age like

  1766. Anna was.

  1767. We don't

  1768. really know,

  1769. but perhaps

  1770. he was at

  1771. that age

  1772. where you

  1773. can just

  1774. kind of

  1775. get by

  1776. with taking

  1777. people's

  1778. babies up

  1779. in your

  1780. hand.

  1781. I don't

  1782. know what

  1783. age it is

  1784. that you

  1785. cross into

  1786. that,

  1787. but there

  1788. is an

  1789. age where

  1790. you get

  1791. to where

  1792. it's just

  1793. like you

  1794. just talk

  1795. to all

  1796. the babies

  1797. in the

  1798. restaurant

  1799. and parents

  1800. just kind

  1801. of let

  1802. you do

  1803. it,

  1804. right?

  1805. Maybe

  1806. Simeon's

  1807. kind of

  1808. like that.

  1809. We don't

  1810. know if

  1811. it was the

  1812. intention of

  1813. Joseph and

  1814. Mary to

  1815. receive a

  1816. blessing from

  1817. Simeon.

  1818. We don't

  1819. know if he

  1820. was a

  1821. priest.

  1822. We don't

  1823. know anything

  1824. about him

  1825. from that

  1826. perspective.

  1827. We just

  1828. know that

  1829. he saw

  1830. this baby

  1831. that the

  1832. Lord revealed

  1833. to him who

  1834. this baby

  1835. was and he

  1836. takes him up

  1837. in his arms

  1838. and what

  1839. does he do?

  1840. He publicly

  1841. declares the

  1842. truth of who

  1843. this child

  1844. is.

  1845. And what

  1846. is it that

  1847. Santa does?

  1848. Santa.

  1849. Christmas on the

  1850. brain.

  1851. Anna.

  1852. What is it

  1853. that Anna does?

  1854. She sees the

  1855. Christ.

  1856. We don't

  1857. know exactly

  1858. the interaction

  1859. that she had

  1860. but clearly

  1861. she understood

  1862. what Simeon

  1863. understood.

  1864. Maybe she

  1865. was with

  1866. him when

  1867. he made

  1868. this prophecy.

  1869. And what

  1870. is it that

  1871. she does?

  1872. She immediately

  1873. goes to

  1874. everybody else

  1875. around her.

  1876. Others who

  1877. were longing

  1878. for the coming

  1879. of the Messiah

  1880. and she said

  1881. he has come.

  1882. He's come.

  1883. What are we

  1884. to do as we

  1885. wait?

  1886. We're to go

  1887. to other people

  1888. around us and

  1889. say listen he's

  1890. come and he's

  1891. coming back.

  1892. Repent and

  1893. believe the good

  1894. news.

  1895. It's what

  1896. Jesus commanded

  1897. us to do.

  1898. Now Jesus

  1899. says in Luke

  1900. 12 blessed

  1901. are those whom

  1902. the master

  1903. finds awake

  1904. when he

  1905. returns.

  1906. That's what

  1907. it looks like

  1908. to be awake.

  1909. Are you

  1910. waiting well?

  1911. Are you

  1912. waiting well?
