  1. Well, if you're like me and our family, you have a series of Christmas plans to execute in the next few days.

  2. Your schedules with family have been synchronized.

  3. You've arranged your travel.

  4. You've made final preparations for how you're going to tackle the monster that is the Christmas week.

  5. And perhaps even this moment, maybe this is in your plan.

  6. This is kind of a jump start for the week.

  7. Kids are finished with school now.

  8. They're on Christmas break.

  9. Maybe you get a few days off.

  10. And kind of the jump start of your Christmas celebration is this worship service here in this place.

  11. Whatever your plans may be, Christmas is coming, ready or not.

  12. And the text that we're going to study this morning, a simple text,

  13. is introducing us to the execution of God's Christmas plans.

  14. Plans that were prepared in eternity past.

  15. Plans that were carried out in history.

  16. Plans that are wonderfully beneficial for anyone who has eyes to see and ears to hear and a heart to believe them.

  17. So I want to draw your eyes to Galatians chapter 4.

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  18. Just two verses here.

  19. Verses 4 and 5.

  20. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his son, born of woman, born under the law,

  21. to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

  22. Well, since we're kind of parachuting into the middle of this paragraph here,

  23. I should at least summarize for you the context here,

  24. really a much larger context in the letter,

  25. so that we might better grasp Paul's intention in writing these two verses.

  26. He was writing to a group of churches who were being heavily influenced at the time by a heretical group

  27. that sought to merge Christian discipleship with conformity to the Mosaic law or the Old Testament law.

  28. These individuals known as Judaizers, as we might refer to them now,

  29. they taught that while following Jesus was important,

  30. if you were to truly be right with God,

  31. then you must also observe such ceremonial laws as circumcision,

  32. feast days, festival days that were put out in the Mosaic law.

  33. Dietary restrictions, as we see being referred to.

  34. All three of these issues are highlighted in Paul's letter to the Galatian churches

  35. because this heretical group has come in,

  36. and it says, yeah, Jesus is great, he's important, but he's not enough.

  37. What you also need to do is you need to merge together this following of Jesus with conformity to the law.

  38. And if you do those two things, you have your faith, plus you have your works,

  39. and you bring those two things together,

  40. then and only then can you be truly justified before God.

  41. Can you be truly made right with God?

  42. So Paul's letter to the Galatians is a polemic against such heresy.

  43. It's a warning that adopting such beliefs is tantamount to abandoning God himself

  44. and the true gospel of Jesus Christ.

  45. Now that sounds like strong language, but it's the language that Paul actually uses.

  46. If you just look back in chapter 1 and verse 6,

  47. he opens the letter without thanksgiving for the church, which was unusual for Paul,

  48. but he says in verse 6,

  49. I'm astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ

  50. and are turning to a different gospel.

  51. So the issues that are unfolding in the churches of Galatia are not issues of,

  52. that we might treat with any kind of indifference.

  53. They are serious issues.

  54. They're gospel issues.

  55. In this portion of the letter in chapter 4,

  56. Paul is arguing that the function of the Mosaic law

  57. was never actually to offer salvation to begin with.

  58. That's basically what the Judaizers were saying.

  59. That's basically what a lot of people that would claim to be Christian today are saying as well.

  60. That the function of the law,

  61. that there is a certain measure of righteousness that you must have

  62. and in exchange for your obedience to a list of rules and a set of traditions,

  63. in exchange for your obedience,

  64. God will then grant you the salvation that you then deserve.

  65. Paul's pushing against that.

  66. He's arguing against that fiercely here.

  67. And he contends that the function of the law

  68. is to expose our sinfulness

  69. and to point us to salvation through God's promised Savior.

  70. And beginning in chapter 3,

  71. he uses this illustration that he begins to repeat a number of times.

  72. An illustration that refers to the law

  73. as a guardian,

  74. or a tutor,

  75. or a steward,

  76. a household manager,

  77. all words that Paul is using here

  78. to describe the true function

  79. of the Mosaic law.

  80. And the role of this guardian

  81. would be just as a guardian

  82. in the homes in Roman culture

  83. who were tasked

  84. with overseeing the child

  85. until he comes of age.

  86. And it's when he becomes of age

  87. that he is then granted

  88. all the benefits

  89. that belong to an heir.

  90. That's the illustration he's using,

  91. and that's the illustration that he's using here in chapter 4.

  92. And so we understand then

  93. that having started in faith,

  94. some of the Galatian Christians

  95. were in danger of turning back,

  96. that's Paul's language,

  97. turning back

  98. from grounding their salvation in Christ

  99. to actually grounding it

  100. in their efforts

  101. at obeying the law.

  102. So that's what Paul was writing to confront,

  103. and it's the context in which

  104. this passage must be interpreted, okay?

  105. And there's a lot more to that.

  106. I would encourage you to actually go

  107. study it on your own in detail.

  108. Not just on your own, though.

  109. Perhaps you would even be benefited more

  110. by studying it along with a partner,

  111. a husband, a wife,

  112. maybe a friend in the church.

  113. Just decide we're going to meet together

  114. maybe for a few weeks,

  115. and we're going to read through

  116. the book of Galatians together.

  117. We're going to work against each other

  118. to make sure we understand this context,

  119. because it is quite important.

  120. But what we're going to do

  121. is we're going to zero in

  122. on these two verses

  123. that I read just a moment ago.

  124. These two verses,

  125. what they do,

  126. the way they're functioning

  127. in Paul's argument,

  128. is they are revealing to us

  129. the one that God's law,

  130. this guardian,

  131. points to.

  132. It shows us the eternal plan of God,

  133. perfectly fulfilled

  134. in the incarnation of Jesus Christ.

  135. It expresses for us

  136. the glorious truth

  137. of God's Christmas plans,

  138. which make it possible

  139. for us to be forgiven

  140. and to be reconciled to Him.

  141. And this is the gospel truth

  142. that I hope to show you

  143. from these two verses this morning.

  144. Four things I want to point out to you

  145. as we break the verses apart, okay?

  146. The first thing is this.

  147. I want you to see

  148. the unfolding plan of God.

  149. The unfolding plan of God.

  150. Just the very first phrase

  151. in verse four

  152. is where we get this.

  153. But when the fullness of time

  154. had come,

  155. the fullness of time

  156. had come.

  157. Now remember,

  158. the language

  159. is connected

  160. to this illustration

  161. Paul is using.

  162. If you just set your eyes

  163. on verse two

  164. in chapter four,

  165. the illustration refers

  166. to a child

  167. being under guardianship

  168. until the day

  169. set by his father.

  170. That's the illustration

  171. he's using.

  172. But he's under guardians

  173. and managers

  174. until the date

  175. set by his father,

  176. Paul says.

  177. Now we get to verse four.

  178. This statement

  179. about the fullness of time

  180. coming

  181. is the explanation

  182. of the illustration

  183. Paul's using in verse two.

  184. So he illustrates it.

  185. He says,

  186. there's this kind of scenario

  187. he puts forth

  188. where there's a child.

  189. He's raised by this guardian

  190. until the date

  191. that the father

  192. has determined.

  193. And then he turns

  194. to the plan of God,

  195. the unfolding plan of God

  196. in history,

  197. redemptive history.

  198. And he says,

  199. the fullness of time

  200. has now come.

  201. The date set

  202. by the father

  203. has come.

  204. Now what he does

  205. not mean here

  206. is that when God

  207. felt that the world's

  208. circumstances

  209. were most favorable

  210. that he suddenly

  211. decided to take action.

  212. That's not what Paul

  213. means by this statement.

  214. What he means

  215. is that the events

  216. of Jesus'

  217. incarnation,

  218. including the historical

  219. circumstances

  220. into which he was born,

  221. took place

  222. at precisely

  223. the time

  224. God

  225. intended.

  226. At precisely

  227. the time

  228. when the fullness

  229. of time had come,

  230. when everything

  231. had been accomplished

  232. that God had intended

  233. to be accomplished

  234. in the orchestration

  235. of his sovereign plan

  236. and his providence.

  237. Then

  238. and only then

  239. Christ came.

  240. It's the unfolding

  241. plan

  242. of God.

  243. Now,

  244. I hope this

  245. doesn't happen

  246. to you,

  247. but the chances

  248. are something's

  249. going to happen

  250. this week.

  251. It's going to mess

  252. up your Christmas

  253. plans,

  254. right?

  255. A few weeks

  256. ago,

  257. Ashlyn's birthday

  258. is tomorrow.

  259. Ashlyn's 13

  260. years old tomorrow.

  261. We celebrate,

  262. do you want me,

  263. do you want us

  264. to sing to you?

  265. You don't want us

  266. to do it?

  267. A couple of weeks

  268. ago we celebrated

  269. her birthday.

  270. This year she wanted

  271. to go to Winterfest

  272. at Carowind.

  273. She wanted to take

  274. some of her friends

  275. with her and some

  276. of the girls here

  277. went along with her.

  278. Julie and I had,

  279. it was a Friday night,

  280. we had to set up

  281. this whole plan together

  282. where Julie was

  283. going to drive

  284. to Troutman

  285. to get Annette

  286. and Phoebe

  287. and then she was

  288. going to drive

  289. down to Mooresville

  290. to get Clementine.

  291. Then she was

  292. going to drive

  293. to Matthew's

  294. to get my niece,

  295. Kate,

  296. and then she was

  297. going to drive

  298. to the Zaxby's

  299. next to Carowind's.

  300. Now while she

  301. was doing that,

  302. Harper and I

  303. were taking Charlie

  304. to Gastonia

  305. so we could drop

  306. her off with my parents

  307. and then we were

  308. going to rendezvous

  309. with them at Zaxby's

  310. so that we could

  311. eat dinner

  312. before it cost,

  313. you know,

  314. 50 bucks a plate

  315. and then we were

  316. going to go

  317. into Carowind's

  318. and enjoy the time

  319. together.

  320. Well,

  321. things don't ever

  322. happen the way

  323. that you want

  324. them to happen,

  325. do they?

  326. And Harper

  327. and I are on

  328. 77,

  329. 485,

  330. and 85

  331. all at about,

  332. I don't know,

  333. 430.

  334. And we just

  335. weren't going to make

  336. it to Zaxby's

  337. so I called Julie

  338. and I was like,

  339. we're not going to

  340. be there in time,

  341. she was already

  342. at the restaurant,

  343. if you'll just get

  344. Harper and I

  345. something to eat,

  346. we'll eat dinner

  347. in the parking lot

  348. at Carowind's

  349. and we'll go in

  350. and we'll enjoy

  351. the night.

  352. So Harper and I

  353. go straight to Carowind's,

  354. plans have already

  355. changed,

  356. we get there,

  357. we're in line to

  358. get into the parking

  359. lot and finally

  360. they open up the

  361. gates and we go

  362. into the parking

  363. lot and we find

  364. our parking space,

  365. Julie pulls in

  366. behind us and we

  367. get out,

  368. we're so hungry,

  369. we haven't eaten

  370. all day,

  371. we say,

  372. where's our food

  373. we would love to

  374. eat and she says,

  375. oh,

  376. I forgot to get

  377. you food.

  378. So,

  379. plan B

  380. is already

  381. changed.

  382. So we go inside

  383. and we think,

  384. okay,

  385. we're just going

  386. to find us a

  387. restaurant immediately.

  388. Well,

  389. there's no

  390. restaurants immediately

  391. unless you want

  392. Cinnabon,

  393. right,

  394. when you walk

  395. into the thing

  396. and then there's

  397. these shows that

  398. we want to go to.

  399. It's like two

  400. hours later,

  401. Harper and I

  402. finally get

  403. something to eat

  404. at Carowind's.

  405. The plans were

  406. just constantly

  407. changing,

  408. right?

  409. Our plans do

  410. that.

  411. Your plans are

  412. going to do

  413. that this week.

  414. Listen,

  415. one person or

  416. one being that

  417. never happens

  418. to is God.

  419. His plans never

  420. change.

  421. Nothing takes

  422. him by surprise.

  423. There's nothing

  424. that he's hoping

  425. to happen or

  426. waiting for to

  427. happen before he

  428. decides to act.

  429. That's not how

  430. it works for

  431. him.

  432. No,

  433. God has an

  434. eternal plan that

  435. he executes in

  436. time and space

  437. according to his

  438. sovereign will and

  439. that plan has

  440. everything to do

  441. with Jesus and

  442. saving sinners from

  443. his own wrath through

  444. Jesus.

  445. Now,

  446. there's a lot of

  447. text we could turn

  448. to for this.

  449. Let me just show

  450. you one in

  451. Ephesians chapter

  452. one.

  453. It's on the

  454. screen for you

  455. to see.

  456. God chose us in

  457. him, in Christ.

  458. God chose us in

  459. Christ, watch this

  460. phrase, before the

  461. foundation of the

  462. world, before

  463. creation.

  464. In eternity past,

  465. God had a plan to

  466. save sinners.

  467. In love, he

  468. predestined us to

  469. adoption to himself

  470. as sons through

  471. Jesus Christ.

  472. Here's the phrase,

  473. according to the

  474. purposes of his

  475. will.

  476. He planned to do

  477. it in him.

  478. We have

  479. redemption through

  480. his blood, the

  481. forgiveness of our

  482. trespasses, according

  483. to the riches of his

  484. grace, which he

  485. lavished upon us in

  486. all wisdom and

  487. insight, making known

  488. to us here the

  489. mystery of his

  490. will, or we might

  491. say his plan,

  492. according to his

  493. purpose, which he

  494. set forth in Christ

  495. as a plan, and

  496. here's this phrase

  497. again, for the

  498. fullness of time.

  499. In him, we have

  500. attained an

  501. inheritance, having

  502. been predestined

  503. according to the

  504. purpose of him who

  505. works all things,

  506. according to the

  507. counsel of his

  508. will.

  509. What am I saying?

  510. I'm saying that God's

  511. plan in Christ was

  512. not spontaneous.

  513. God's plan in Christ

  514. was not happenstance.

  515. It is his sovereign

  516. purpose from before

  517. creation.

  518. It is the unfolding

  519. plan of God in

  520. history, the pivotal

  521. moment of which is

  522. the incarnation of

  523. Jesus Christ.

  524. You say, how do you

  525. know that?

  526. The Bible tells us

  527. all about it.

  528. You can start from

  529. the very beginning.

  530. Jesus is the seed of

  531. the woman whom God

  532. promised to Adam and

  533. Eve that he would

  534. rescue fallen humanity.

  535. Jesus is the ark of

  536. our salvation from

  537. God's judgment pictured

  538. in the story of Noah.

  539. Jesus is Abraham's

  540. offspring through which

  541. all the families of

  542. the earth are blessed.

  543. Jesus is the perfect

  544. spotless lamb pictured

  545. in the worship of

  546. Israel.

  547. Jesus is the son of

  548. David who will rule

  549. God's eternal kingdom.

  550. Jesus is the Messiah

  551. foretold by the

  552. prophets.

  553. The birth of Jesus was

  554. not a coincidence.

  555. God didn't wake up one

  556. morning and say, oh,

  557. this might be a good

  558. time to try to make

  559. something happen.

  560. No.

  561. This was the pivotal

  562. moment of human history

  563. orchestrated by the

  564. sovereign plan of God

  565. as the event to which

  566. all the scriptures

  567. pointed.

  568. So using this

  569. illustration, Paul

  570. reminds the Galatians

  571. that in God's

  572. unfolding plan, the

  573. time to which the law

  574. pointed was marked by

  575. Jesus' advent, his

  576. coming.

  577. And because of what

  578. God did through Christ

  579. in the fullness of

  580. time, we are no longer

  581. under a guardian.

  582. No longer under the

  583. condemnation of the law

  584. held in bondage to it.

  585. The unfolding plan of

  586. God.

  587. Number two, I want you

  588. to see the agent of God's

  589. plan.

  590. The agent of God's plan.

  591. Now we're still in verse

  592. four.

  593. Just look at the next

  594. couple of phrases.

  595. In the fullness of

  596. time, God sent forth

  597. his son, born of

  598. woman, born under

  599. the law.

  600. Now these brief

  601. statements, they give

  602. us an introduction to

  603. the true nature of

  604. Jesus.

  605. He is the agent of

  606. God's plan, carrying

  607. out this plan in real

  608. time and space.

  609. Now that he was sent

  610. forth from God, is

  611. Paul's way of

  612. indicating that Jesus

  613. actually existed before

  614. he was ever born.

  615. That's strange.

  616. None of us can say that,

  617. can we?

  618. Oh, we came into

  619. existence at our

  620. conception, didn't we?

  621. Not Jesus, though.

  622. No, Jesus was actually

  623. sent forth in order to

  624. be born of woman.

  625. He existed before.

  626. John chapter one.

  627. In the beginning was the

  628. word.

  629. John's using word here as a

  630. proper noun for Jesus.

  631. In the beginning was the

  632. word.

  633. The word was with God.

  634. The word was God.

  635. He was in the beginning

  636. with God.

  637. All things were actually

  638. made through him.

  639. Jesus is the creator.

  640. And without him was not

  641. anything made that was

  642. made.

  643. And then in verse 14 he

  644. says, and the word

  645. became flesh.

  646. This preexistent word,

  647. this one existing with

  648. God as God in eternity

  649. past became flesh,

  650. became a man and

  651. dwelt among us.

  652. And we have seen his

  653. glory, John says,

  654. glory as of the only

  655. son from the father,

  656. full of grace and

  657. truth.

  658. Jesus makes this very

  659. claim himself.

  660. In John 17, four and

  661. five, Jesus prays to the

  662. father, I glorified you

  663. on earth, having

  664. accomplished the work

  665. you gave me to do.

  666. And now father glorify me

  667. in your own presence with

  668. the glory that I had with

  669. you before the world ever

  670. existed.

  671. He says.

  672. Jesus' birth is not the

  673. beginning of his

  674. existence.

  675. It's just the beginning of

  676. his incarnation.

  677. That's important.

  678. That's important.

  679. That the essence of his

  680. eternal existence is as

  681. God's son corresponds to

  682. the reality that his

  683. coming indeed was via a

  684. virgin birth.

  685. Just as the scripture says.

  686. People keep trying to

  687. explain this away.

  688. Can't explain it away if

  689. you're using the Bible.

  690. It just doesn't work.

  691. He didn't become God's

  692. son.

  693. No.

  694. He's always been God's

  695. son.

  696. Luke chapter 1.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  697. The angel comes to Mary.

  698. Behold, you will conceive in

  699. your room and bear a son.

  700. You shall call his name

  701. Jesus.

  702. He will be great and will be

  703. called the son of the most

  704. high, the son of God.

  705. And the Lord God will give to

  706. him the throne of his father

  707. David.

  708. He will reign over the house

  709. of Jacob forever and of his

  710. kingdom there will be no end.

  711. And Mary said to the angel,

  712. how will this be since I'm a

  713. virgin?

  714. I've never known a man.

  715. And the angel said, the Holy

  716. Spirit will come upon you.

  717. The power of the most high

  718. will overshadow you.

  719. Therefore, the child to be

  720. born will be called holy, the

  721. son of God.

  722. And then in Matthew chapter 1

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  723. in Matthew's account, all this

  724. took place, Matthew says, to

  725. fulfill what the Lord had

  726. spoken by the prophet.

  727. Behold, the virgin shall

  728. conceive and bear a son and

  729. they shall call his name

  730. Emmanuel, which means God is

  731. with us.

  732. Not one from God is with us.

  733. No, God is with us.

  734. So in this simple phrase, this

  735. simple statement in Galatians 4,

  736. as Paul is making this argument

  737. of the sufficiency of Christ in

  738. his gospel, he reminds us of

  739. Jesus's true nature, underscoring

  740. Jesus's true divinity, deity.

  741. But he also underscores Jesus's

  742. true humanity.

  743. This is the mystery of it, isn't

  744. it?

  745. It's the very next phrase.

  746. That Jesus was born of woman

  747. highlights the fact that Jesus

  748. was not only truly God, but he's

  749. actually truly man.

  750. He's a real man.

  751. That he was born under the law

  752. means that as a true man, Jesus

  753. was fully subjected to the

  754. demands of God's law like every

  755. other man and woman.

  756. Jesus truly is the God-man.

  757. A mystery to be sure, but a

  758. reality that's made plain in the

  759. scriptures.

  760. Jesus's nature as truly God and

  761. truly man is absolutely essential.

  762. to God's saving plan.

  763. He's the agent of God's plan

  764. because only he can be the agent

  765. of God's plan.

  766. So we've got the unfolding of

  767. God's plan.

  768. We've got the agent of God's plan.

  769. Third, we see the execution of

  770. God's plan.

  771. The execution of God's plan.

  772. Now we're going to look at verse

  773. five, just the first phrase there.

  774. Why did he come?

  775. Why did he send forth his son?

  776. To redeem those who were under the

  777. law.

  778. To redeem those who were under the

  779. law.

  780. Now how is it that this child

  781. whose birth we celebrate

  782. executes God's plan to save

  783. sinners?

  784. What did the father send the son

  785. to do so that those who are under

  786. the law, that's me and you, that's

  787. mankind,

  788. what did he send him to do so that

  789. we could be redeemed?

  790. The manger in Bethlehem is of

  791. course shadowed by the cross in

  792. Jerusalem, isn't it?

  793. The execution of God's plan

  794. necessitated the execution of God's

  795. son.

  796. To redeem those who were under the

  797. law,

  798. Jesus was born so that he could die.

  799. And it was all according to God's

  800. sovereign plan.

  801. A plan that was foretold hundreds of

  802. years before it took place.

  803. Isaiah tells us all about it in

  804. Isaiah 53.

  805. Yet it was the will of the Lord to

  806. crush him.

  807. He has put him to grief.

  808. When his soul makes an offering for

  809. guilt, he shall see his offspring.

  810. He shall prolong his days.

  811. The will of the Lord shall prosper

  812. in his hand.

  813. This is the plan of God.

  814. Now how could the execution of

  815. Jesus be a means of redemption for

  816. us?

  817. How is that even possible?

  818. What does a Jew and his death from

  819. 2,000 years ago have anything to do

  820. with your life today?

  821. This is why understanding Jesus'

  822. true nature is so important.

  823. That's why Paul is laying out the

  824. argument the way that he is.

  825. He doesn't just say that Jesus is

  826. the son of God born of woman born

  827. under the law just because he's

  828. trying to fill up space and he's

  829. being real wordy like I am.

  830. No, there's an intention to it.

  831. It's only after you understand that

  832. nature that you can actually

  833. understand this redemption.

  834. Though as a man, Jesus was fully

  835. subjected to the demands of the law

  836. unlike any other man.

  837. Jesus perfectly obeyed and fulfilled

  838. that law.

  839. Therefore his death was not a

  840. judgment for sins that he committed

  841. but it was an atonement for those

  842. who have indeed sinned against God.

  843. That's how he did it.

  844. That's why it matters.

  845. In other words, Jesus lived the life

  846. that we were meant to live

  847. and then he died the death

  848. that we deserve to die.

  849. On the cross, he laid down his life

  850. to suffer the wrath of the Father

  851. meant for sinners so that God

  852. might count those same sinners

  853. as righteous before him.

  854. That's amazing.

  855. Let me give you just a few passages

  856. that echo this.

  857. from Galatians itself.

  858. If you want to just flip back a page

  859. to chapter 3.

  860. Galatians 3 verse 10.

    Galatians 3:10

  861. All who rely on the works of the law

  862. are under a curse.

  863. In other words, if you're counting on

  864. your ability to just kind of be good

  865. and do your best and try your hardest

  866. that how could God ever condemn

  867. somebody like me

  868. if that's what you're counting on?

  869. Paul says you're under a curse.

  870. He says the reason you're under a curse

  871. is because the scriptures say

  872. curse be everyone who does not abide

  873. by all things written in the book

  874. of the law and do them.

  875. He says in other words

  876. if you're counting on your goodness

  877. to make it

  878. you're under a curse

  879. because none of us have been good enough.

  880. All of us have fallen short

  881. and somebody has to pay for that.

  882. Somebody has to reckon with that.

  883. But then look at verse 13.

  884. But Christ redeemed us from that curse.

  885. How?

  886. By becoming a curse for us.

  887. For it's written

  888. cursed is everyone

  889. who hangs on a tree.

  890. Paul says the same thing

  891. in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  892. For God has done what the law

  893. weakened by the flesh could not do.

  894. How?

  895. By sending his own son

  896. in the likeness of sinful flesh

  897. and for sin

  898. he condemned sin in the flesh.

  899. In his flesh

  900. with his flesh

  901. with his body

  902. in the execution on the cross

  903. he condemns sin.

  904. He deals with sin

  905. Paul says.

  906. Why?

  907. In order that

  908. the righteous requirement of the law

  909. might be filled in us

  910. who have not truly fulfilled it

  911. and yet we're counted

  912. as righteous.

  913. 2 Corinthians 5 29

  914. For our sake

  915. he made him to be sin

  916. who knew no sin

  917. so that in him

  918. we might become

  919. the righteousness

  920. of God.

  921. We sing about this

  922. every week

  923. bearing sin

  924. and scoffing rude

  925. in my place

  926. condemned

  927. he stood

  928. sealed my pardon

  929. with his blood.

  930. Hallelujah

  931. what a savior.

  932. But of course

  933. death isn't the end

  934. for Jesus.

  935. He defeats death

  936. by rising from the dead

  937. three days after that crucifixion

  938. and this too

  939. is the execution

  940. of God's eternal plan.

  941. This is what was meant to happen.

  942. John chapter 10 tells us

    John 10 chapter mention

  943. Jesus says it

  944. for this reason

  945. the father loves me

  946. because I lay down

  947. my life

  948. that I may take it up again.

  949. No one takes it from me

  950. I lay it down

  951. of my own accord.

  952. I have authority

  953. to lay it down

  954. I have authority

  955. to take it up again

  956. this charge

  957. this mission

  958. this plan

  959. I have received

  960. from my father.

  961. Oh it's not just

  962. that his execution

  963. was a part of the plan

  964. so was his resurrection

  965. and you can't have one

  966. without the other.

  967. the resurrection

  968. it shows us

  969. that God actually

  970. accepted Christ's crucifixion

  971. as sufficient

  972. for us.

  973. Now why in the world

  974. would Paul be referring

  975. to this in Galatians 4?

  976. Because he's talking

  977. to a group of people

  978. who are being deceived.

  979. Somebody's telling them

  980. that yeah

  981. Jesus is fine

  982. but he's not enough.

  983. But in the resurrection

  984. itself

  985. God himself

  986. tells the world

  987. Christ is enough.

  988. nothing else

  989. need be done.

  990. Receive salvation

  991. through him.

  992. Christ

  993. fully satisfied

  994. God's wrath

  995. against every sinner

  996. who will receive him

  997. by faith.

  998. There is nothing

  999. left for you to pay.

  1000. But his resurrection

  1001. it guarantees

  1002. our future resurrection.

  1003. salvation.

  1004. Because he lives

1005. we have the full assurance

  1006. that we too

  1007. will live.

  1008. It's the execution

  1009. of God's plan.

  1010. Fourthly and finally

  1011. the purpose

  1012. of God's plan.

  1013. The purpose

  1014. of God's plan.

1015. Look at the last phrase

  1016. of verse 5.

  1017. It's a purpose statement.

  1018. We know that

1019. because the first two words

  1020. so that

  1021. it's a purpose statement.

  1022. so that we

  1023. might receive

  1024. adoption

  1025. as sons.

  1026. So that we might

  1027. receive adoption

  1028. as sons.

  1029. There is a popular

  1030. idea out there

  1031. that maintains

  1032. something like this.

  1033. We are

  1034. all

  1035. God's children.

  1036. We're all God's children.

  1037. Perhaps you've heard that.

  1038. Maybe you've said it.

  1039. But here's the thing.

  1040. That doesn't actually

  1041. come from the Bible.

  1042. That was a phrase

1043. that was brought to bear

1044. at the end of the

  1045. enlightenment

  1046. when culturally

  1047. men had decided

  1048. that God and religion

  1049. was no longer necessary

  1050. that mankind

1051. can get by just fine

  1052. on pure reason

  1053. and rationality.

1054. But yet there was still

  1055. hundreds and hundreds

  1056. of years worth

  1057. of religion that existed.

  1058. They didn't want to

1059. just do away with it all.

  1060. So what they did

1061. is they tried to merge

  1062. the two together

  1063. and they said

  1064. they spoke of

  1065. the universal fatherhood

  1066. of God

  1067. and the universal

  1068. brotherhood of man.

  1069. In other words

1070. we all belong to God.

  1071. We're all the children

  1072. of God

  1073. and we're all brothers

  1074. and sisters together.

  1075. A nice sentiment.

  1076. Not true.

1077. It's not what the Bible

  1078. teaches.

  1079. We are all God's

  1080. creatures.

1081. We do belong to Him

  1082. in that sense

  1083. but we are not

  1084. all His children.

  1085. In fact

  1086. in our sinful condition

  1087. the Bible describes us

  1088. as God's enemies

  1089. not His children.

1090. That's why the New Testament

1091. so often uses this idea

  1092. of adoption

  1093. in reference

  1094. to God's salvation.

1095. You see it right here

  1096. in the phrase

  1097. don't you?

  1098. If Christ executed

  1099. this plan

  1100. with the purpose

  1101. that those who believe

  1102. Him might receive

  1103. adoption

  1104. might become

  1105. children of God

  1106. that means

  1107. necessarily

  1108. that those same people

  1109. at some time

  1110. were not the children

  1111. of God.

  1112. God's purpose

  1113. in His eternal plan

  1114. as executed

  1115. by Jesus Christ

  1116. is to make

  1117. His enemies

  1118. sons.

  1119. It's to make

  1120. His enemies

  1121. sons.

  1122. I just want you

  1123. to let that sit

  1124. on your mind

  1125. for just a second.

  1126. It's kind of amazing.

  1127. Who of you

  1128. would ever look

  1129. at an enemy

  1130. who hates

  1131. your guts

  1132. and wants

  1133. nothing to do

  1134. with you

  1135. and say

  1136. you know

  1137. what I'm going

  1138. to do?

  1139. I'm going to

  1140. make you

  1141. my child.

  1142. I'm going to

  1143. give you

  1144. everything that's

  1145. mine.

  1146. I'm going to

  1147. forgive everything

  1148. you've ever done.

  1149. I'm going to

  1150. turn away

  1151. from every bit

  1152. of hatred

  1153. that you've

  1154. ever put

  1155. towards me

  1156. and I'm going

  1157. to give you

  1158. everything that's

  1159. mine.

  1160. None of us

  1161. would ever

  1162. do that

  1163. and yet

  1164. that's exactly

  1165. what God

  1166. does in Christ.

  1167. Why?

  1168. God's plan

  1169. of salvation

  1170. it's not a

  1171. provision that

  1172. he makes

  1173. for us

  1174. out of pity.

  1175. Sometimes we

  1176. get this idea

  1177. that because

  1178. of God's

  1179. holiness

  1180. that you

  1181. know he

  1182. feels like

  1183. he has to

  1184. do something

  1185. because he

  1186. kind of

  1187. feels sorry

  1188. for us

  1189. so he

  1190. kind of

  1191. pinches

  1192. his nose

  1193. and he

  1194. sends Jesus

  1195. and I

  1196. go do this

  1197. thing for

  1198. anybody who

  1199. wants to

  1200. deal with

  1201. it

  1202. and he

  1203. just kind

  1204. of keeps

  1205. his distance.

  1206. That is not

  1207. at all what

  1208. we find in

  1209. the scripture

  1210. remember

  1211. this is

  1212. God's

  1213. unfolding

  1214. plan

  1215. from all

  1216. of eternity.

  1217. This is

  1218. his plan.

  1219. Why?

  1220. Why would

  1221. he do

  1222. that?

  1223. What is it

  1224. that he

  1225. actually

  1226. desires?

  1227. He desires

  1228. to be

  1229. reconciled

  1230. to us

  1231. his enemies.

  1232. Why does

  1233. he want

  1234. what's

  1235. motivating

  1236. this desire?

  1237. Love.

  1238. Love.

  1239. Romans

  1240. Romans 5

  1241. 8

  1242. God

  1243. shows

  1244. his love

  1245. toward us

  1246. how?

  1247. That while

  1248. we're still

  1249. sinners

  1250. his enemies

  1251. and in that

  1252. moment don't

  1253. even want

  1254. him we're

  1255. not asking

  1256. for salvation

  1257. don't think

  1258. we need

  1259. it.

  1260. Even

  1261. then

  1262. he shows

  1263. his love

  1264. for us

  1265. by sending

  1266. Christ to

  1267. die for

  1268. us.

  1269. Ephesians

  1270. too

  1271. but God

  1272. being rich

  1273. in mercy

  1274. because of

  1275. the great

  1276. love

  1277. with which

  1278. he loved

  1279. us

  1280. even when

  1281. we were

  1282. dead in

  1283. our

  1284. trespasses

  1285. made us

  1286. alive

  1287. together

  1288. with Christ

  1289. by grace

  1290. you've been

  1291. saved.

  1292. 1 John

  1293. 4

  1294. 9

  1295. and 10

  1296. in this

  1297. the love

  1298. of God

  1299. was made

  1300. manifest

  1301. in this

  1302. the love

  1303. of God

  1304. was put

  1305. on display

  1306. how?

  1307. That God

  1308. sent his

  1309. son

  1310. into the

  1311. world

  1312. so that

  1313. we might

  1314. live

  1315. through him

  1316. in this

  1317. is love

  1318. not that

  1319. we've

  1320. loved

  1321. him

  1322. but that

  1323. he loved

  1324. us

  1325. and sent

  1326. his son

  1327. to be

  1328. the propitiation

  1329. the full

  1330. satisfaction

  1331. for our

  1332. sins

  1333. unless we

  1334. begin to

  1335. think that

  1336. Jesus is an

  1337. unwilling

  1338. participant

  1339. in this

  1340. hear the

  1341. words of

  1342. the writer

  1343. of Hebrews

  1344. in Hebrews

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  1345. chapter 12

  1346. and verse 2

  1347. he says

  1348. look to

  1349. Jesus

  1350. the founder

  1351. and perfecter

  1352. of our

  1353. faith

  1354. who for

  1355. the joy

  1356. that was

  1357. set before

  1358. him

  1359. endured

  1360. the cross

  1361. despising

  1362. the shame

  1363. and is

  1364. seated at

  1365. the right

  1366. hand of

  1367. the throne

  1368. of God

  1369. what do you

  1370. mean by

  1371. that?

  1372. you go to

  1373. Chick-fil-A

  1374. you go to

  1375. the drive

  1376. through

  1377. you do

  1378. your mobile

  1379. order

  1380. you say

  1381. you got a

  1382. mobile order

  1383. for Jared

  1384. B

  1385. they say

  1386. you want

  1387. to make

  1388. any changes

  1389. they say

  1390. no

  1391. they say

  1392. alright you can

  1393. pull forward

  1394. they say

  1395. thank you

  1396. and they say

  1397. my pleasure

  1398. it is my

  1399. joy

  1400. to serve

  1401. you in this

  1402. way

  1403. and I don't

  1404. think they

  1405. really mean

  1406. that all the

  1407. time

  1408. God sends

  1409. his son

  1410. not as an

  1411. unwilling

  1412. participant

  1413. it is

  1414. his joy

  1415. to give

  1416. himself

  1417. for us

  1418. why?

  1419. so that

  1420. we might

  1421. be

  1422. his

  1423. why did

  1424. God make

  1425. such a plan

  1426. of redemption

  1427. and go to

  1428. such great

  1429. extent

  1430. to save

  1431. sinners

  1432. because of

  1433. his great

  1434. love

  1435. because he

  1436. desires to

  1437. be reconciled

  1438. to us

  1439. because he

  1440. wants to

  1441. adopt us

  1442. into his

  1443. family

  1444. and make

  1445. us heirs

  1446. of eternal

  1447. life

  1448. now let me

  1449. finish this way

  1450. let's go back

  1451. to the context

  1452. the Galatian

  1453. Christians were

  1454. beginning to

  1455. waver from

  1456. this gospel

  1457. why would you

  1458. ever want to

  1459. do that

  1460. right?

  1461. and yet

  1462. the temptation

  1463. to do that

  1464. is real

  1465. isn't it?

  1466. how many times

  1467. have we been

  1468. in churches

  1469. or maybe

  1470. we've been

  1471. the guilty

  1472. party in a

  1473. church

  1474. that see

  1475. someone come

  1476. to Christ

  1477. exemplify faith

  1478. put their

  1479. trust in

  1480. Jesus

  1481. and then we

  1482. come behind

  1483. that and we

  1484. strap on the

  1485. bondage of the

  1486. law afresh

  1487. all over again

  1488. the temptation

  1489. is real to do

  1490. that

  1491. and the Galatian

  1492. Christians were

  1493. starting to

  1494. waver from it

  1495. they were

  1496. tolerating this

  1497. idea that the

  1498. grounds of our

  1499. justification

  1500. before God

  1501. is our

  1502. conformity to

  1503. the law

  1504. so Paul

  1505. writes a

  1506. whole letter

  1507. to correct

  1508. them

  1509. if a righteous

  1510. standing before

  1511. God can be

  1512. gained through

  1513. good works

  1514. Christ died

  1515. for no reason

  1516. that's another

  1517. argument he makes

  1518. in the letter

  1519. think about that

  1520. if this is

  1521. God's plan

  1522. and God's

  1523. plan was to

  1524. send Christ

  1525. to save

  1526. sinners through

  1527. his death

  1528. and resurrection

  1529. and then invites

  1530. us to come to

  1531. him by faith

  1532. how could we

  1533. possibly say

  1534. that it's our

  1535. works then

  1536. that somehow

  1537. merit salvation

  1538. if that was

  1539. true

  1540. if we could

  1541. actually be

  1542. saved by our

  1543. works

  1544. then Christ

  1545. came for

  1546. no reason

  1547. then his

  1548. incarnation

  1549. has no

  1550. purpose

  1551. let alone

  1552. his death

  1553. and resurrection

  1554. but the reality

  1555. of God's

  1556. eternal plan

  1557. to save

  1558. sinners

  1559. through Christ

  1560. the very

  1561. fact that

  1562. that is his

  1563. plan as

  1564. presented in

  1565. the scriptures

  1566. proves that

  1567. no amount

  1568. of personal

  1569. righteous

  1570. can actually

  1571. atone for

  1572. your sins

  1573. this isn't

  1574. an exchange

  1575. of good

  1576. deeds

  1577. what a

  1578. mockery

  1579. that is

  1580. to God

  1581. the one

  1582. who in his

  1583. great love

  1584. goes to

  1585. such great

  1586. lengths

  1587. to provide

  1588. salvation

  1589. through Christ

  1590. by his own

  1591. grace

  1592. what a

  1593. mockery

  1594. it is

  1595. for any

  1596. person

  1597. to turn

  1598. to God

  1599. and then

  1600. say

  1601. look at

  1602. all that

  1603. I've

  1604. done

  1605. for you

  1606. won't

  1607. you please

  1608. let me

  1609. into heaven

  1610. what a

  1611. mockery

  1612. how then

  1613. can someone

  1614. be saved

  1615. it's not

  1616. by our

  1617. righteousness

  1618. it's through

  1619. Jesus'

  1620. righteousness

  1621. through faith

  1622. in his

  1623. identity

  1624. as the

  1625. son of

  1626. God

  1627. whose

  1628. death

  1629. satisfies

  1630. God's

  1631. wrath

  1632. and whose

  1633. resurrection

  1634. gives us

  1635. the hope

  1636. of eternal

  1637. life

  1638. it is

  1639. by faith

  1640. alone

  1641. in what

  1642. Christ

  1643. has done

  1644. that any

  1645. one of

  1646. us

  1647. can be

  1648. saved

  1649. again

  1650. Galatians

  1651. 3

  1652. in fact

  1653. this is

  1654. even

  1655. closer

  1656. if you'll

  1657. just set

  1658. your eyes

  1659. up to

  1660. the top

  1661. of the

  1662. page

  1663. probably

  1664. Galatians

  1665. 3

  1666. 24

  1667. to 26

  1668. in the

  1669. midst

  1670. of the

  1671. same

  1672. illustration

  1673. Paul's

  1674. been

  1675. giving

  1676. so then

  1677. the law

  1678. was our

  1679. guardian

  1680. until

  1681. Christ

  1682. came

  1683. in order

  1684. that we

  1685. might be

  1686. justified

  1687. by

  1688. faith

  1689. but now

  1690. that faith

  1691. the faith

  1692. in the

  1693. revelation

  1694. of Jesus

  1695. now that

  1696. faith has

  1697. come

  1698. we are

  1699. no longer

  1700. under a

  1701. guardian

  1702. for in

  1703. Christ

  1704. Jesus

  1705. you are

  1706. all sons

  1707. of God

  1708. through

  1709. faith

  1710. that's it

  1711. that's it

  1712. that's it

  1713. salvation

  1714. is received

  1715. only through

  1716. faith

  1717. turning from

  1718. sin and

  1719. unbelief

  1720. to trust

  1721. Jesus as

  1722. Savior

  1723. which

  1724. necessarily

  1725. means that

  1726. you also

  1727. submit

  1728. to him

  1729. as

  1730. Lord

  1731. because

  1732. of this

  1733. plan

  1734. of

  1735. salvation

  1736. is

  1737. motivated

  1738. by his

  1739. love

  1740. he

  1741. accomplishes

  1742. it

  1743. and

  1744. he

  1745. invites

  1746. us

  1747. to

  1748. receive

  1749. it

  1750. doesn't

  1751. he

  1752. force

  1753. it

  1754. upon

  1755. us

  1756. he

  1757. invites

  1758. us

  1759. to

  1760. receive

  1761. it

  1762. these

  1763. are

  1764. the

  1765. words

  1766. of

  1767. Jesus

  1768. in

  1769. Matthew

  1770. 11

  1771. come

  1772. to

  1773. me

  1774. he

  1775. says

  1776. come

  1777. to

  1778. me

  1779. all

  1780. who

  1781. labor

  1782. and

  1783. are

  1784. heavy

  1785. laden

  1786. what

  1787. is that

  1788. labor

  1789. the

  1790. labor

  1791. of

  1792. trying

  1793. to

  1794. achieve

  1795. something

  1796. through

  1797. the

  1798. law

  1799. that

  1800. you

  1801. can't

  1802. achieve

  1803. come

  1804. to

  1805. me

  1806. all

  1807. who

  1808. are

  1809. laboring

  1810. trying

  1811. to

  1812. do

  1813. your

  1814. best

  1815. and try

  1816. your

  1817. hardest

  1818. I

  1819. will

  1820. give

  1821. you

  1822. rest

  1823. he

  1824. says

  1825. take

  1826. my

  1827. yoke

  1828. upon

  1829. me

  1830. upon

  1831. you

  1832. learn

  1833. from

  1834. me

  1835. for

  1836. I'm

  1837. gentle

  1838. and

  1839. lowly

  1840. in

  1841. heart

  1842. and

  1843. you

  1844. will

  1845. find

  1846. rest

  1847. for

  1848. your

  1849. soul

  1850. for

  1851. my

  1852. yoke

  1853. is

  1854. easy

  1855. and

  1856. my

  1857. burden

  1858. is

  1859. light

  1860. so

  1861. then

  1862. in

  1863. all

  1864. you're

  1865. giving

  1866. and

  1867. receiving

  1868. this

  1869. week

  1870. as

  1871. you

  1872. execute

  1873. your

  1874. Christmas

  1875. plans

  1876. don't

  1877. neglect

  1878. the only

  1879. gift

  1880. that

  1881. ultimately

  1882. matters

  1883. which

  1884. is

  1885. what

  1886. God

  1887. has

  1888. given

  1889. us

  1890. in

  1891. his

  1892. Christmas

  1893. plans

  1894. salvation

  1895. through

  1896. Jesus

  1897. Christ

  1898. alone

  1899. for
