  1. So 1 Thessalonians 5, 16 to 18, very simply, Paul says,

  2. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances,

  3. for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

  4. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances,

  5. for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

  6. Well, clearly at the heart of this text is this pronouncement

  7. that what is being said or what is being commanded is the, quote, will of God.

  8. And that brings a weightiness to this, doesn't it?

  9. Of course, we understand the Bible is God's word.

  10. Everything that we read there is the will of God in some way,

  11. and there are various ways to understand that.

  12. But whenever we come to a statement like this in the Scripture,

  13. it really is functioning like a giant flashing sign.

  14. It's urging us to pay careful attention to what's being said.

  15. This is the will of God for you.

  16. This is what God wants for you.

  17. To do anything less is to sin, to be in rebellion against Him.

  18. And we've seen the phrase once before in this very letter.

  19. If you remember back in chapter 4 and verse 3,

  20. Paul wrote that the will of God is the Christian's sanctification.

  21. Why don't you just set your eyes on it?

  22. It may even be on the same page for you there.

  23. Chapter 4, verse 3,

  24. This is the will of God, your sanctification.

  25. Very plain.

  26. Sanctification, of course, refers to our progress in holiness,

  27. our progress in purity.

  28. We might understand it in the context of this book

  29. and the way that Paul has used it here.

  30. We might understand it as living consistently

  31. with the purposes for which God has saved us

  32. and set us apart for His glory.

  33. Of course, that too has been echoed in the letter.

  34. Just turn again back to chapter 2 and verse 12.

  35. We exhorted each one of you, encouraged you,

  36. and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God

  37. who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.

  38. That's really what this is about, isn't it?

  39. This sanctification, it really means to walk worthy of God,

  40. to live consistently with the calling on our life.

  41. That is our calling to salvation.

  42. That since we belong to Him as His people,

  43. if you're a Christian,

  44. there is a particular way that He desires for you to live your life

  45. in purity and in holiness.

  46. This is His will,

  47. Paul says plainly in chapter 4 and verse 3.

  48. Well, when Paul speaks of God's will again here in chapter 5 and verse 18,

  49. it's also in relation to the believer's sanctification.

  50. And we know that because of verses 23 and 24.

  51. They are working as the climax,

  52. not only of this section,

  53. really the climax of the whole letter,

  54. but especially this section.

  55. Just set your eyes on them.

  56. Paul offers this prayer.

  57. Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely.

  58. This whole idea of walking worthy,

  59. of living a life that is consistent,

  60. of having an existence that is consistent

  61. with the calling of God on our lives,

  62. he says,

  63. may God bring it to completion.

  64. And may your whole spirit and body and soul be kept blameless.

  65. Blameless being another word for sanctification.

  66. May it be blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus.

  67. He who calls you is faithful.

  68. He will surely do it.

  69. That's the climax,

  70. not only of the letter,

  71. but of this section.

  72. That's what helps inform us of what Paul is doing with this section.

  73. It has to do with our sanctification.

  74. God will be faithful to complete that work when Christ returns.

  75. But until that time,

  76. the challenge for us is to pursue sanctification,

  77. to pursue holiness and purity,

  78. blamelessness in the context of verse 23.

  79. That is our part.

  80. We are to do that.

  81. We are to pursue that in His grace

  82. and of course in the power of His Spirit.

  83. So again, when we get to chapter 5,

  84. there's this repetition.

  85. This is the will of God.

  86. And what is it in relation to?

  87. Well, ultimately it's in relation to our sanctification again,

  88. but it has a narrow focus as well.

  89. Here, sanctification means constant joy,

  90. persistent prayer,

  91. grateful praise in every circumstance.

  92. The bottom line of all of this is

  93. that God desires for His people

  94. to actually live like His people.

  95. And in these verses,

  96. to live as if you belong to God

  97. is to rejoice always,

  98. to pray without ceasing,

  99. and to give thanks in all circumstances.

  100. So it's not very hard to see that, is it?

  101. It's easy to see,

  102. okay, this is what God wants for me.

  103. And though as His people,

  104. it is always,

  105. or at least it should always be,

  106. our delight

  107. to do the will of God,

  108. that doesn't mean

  109. that obedience to God's will

  110. is always easy.

  111. In fact,

  112. there are times where

  113. God's commands

  114. actually,

  115. they seem downright impossible

  116. to obey,

  117. impossible to fulfill.

  118. And I think this is one of those times.

  119. We're so familiar

  120. with these three verses

  121. that we may take for granted

  122. exactly what God is telling us to do here.

  123. Consider the Thessalonian Christians

  124. who were the first recipients

  125. of these instructions.

  126. That they face significant suffering

  127. in their lives

  128. for their faith in particular

  129. is well established.

  130. We know that.

  131. From the very beginning,

  132. their faith

  133. was rocked

  134. by persecution.

  135. Paul himself

  136. and his team

  137. being chased out of town

  138. at threat of their life.

  139. Those who had allowed

  140. Paul and his team

  141. to stay with him,

  142. Jason in particular

  143. was one man

  144. that's named in Acts 17,

  145. are dragged before a mob

  146. and beaten.

  147. Why?

  148. Because they were Christians.

  149. And of course,

  150. as we've studied the letter,

  151. we have found

  152. that that has continued.

  153. Not only has the persecution continued

  154. and not only is it severe,

  155. but now they're starting

  156. to notice that

  157. people that they love,

  158. Christians,

  159. their brothers and sisters in Christ,

  160. are beginning to die

  161. and that's brought confusion.

  162. That's brought a different kind

  163. of grief to them

  164. that Paul has dealt with

  165. in the letter.

  166. Everything that we know

  167. about the Thessalonians

  168. and about their context

  169. is hard.

  170. It's a struggle.

  171. It's suffering.

  172. And their suffering,

  173. both physical and emotional,

  174. showed no signs of letting up.

  175. Now it is to those people

  176. that Paul writes,

  177. God wants you to rejoice.

  178. God wants you to continue praying.

  179. God wants you to express

  180. thanksgiving.

  181. And surely,

  182. as they heard this letter read

  183. in one of their gatherings,

  184. somebody in that worship service

  185. would have thought,

  186. God's asking too much.

  187. How is that even possible?

  188. Perhaps you're in a season of life

  189. that is somewhat like that,

  190. where instructions like these,

  191. while you get them

  192. and maybe you can feign

  193. some type of obedience to them,

  194. you really know

  195. or at least think

  196. that I can't do this.

  197. Sure, you know how to get on

  198. well enough in Christian settings,

  199. but genuinely expressing joy to God,

  200. continuing in faithful

  201. dependence on Him,

  202. offering sincere thanks

  203. from the heart,

  204. just isn't happening.

  205. And maybe you've concluded

  206. that God asked too much.

  207. He asked too much of you.

  208. Or that these attitudes and actions

  209. can only be true

  210. of a certain kind of Christian,

  211. some kind of super Christian

  212. that just has something

  213. that you don't have.

  214. Neither of those things

  215. is true.

  216. We tend to think of these precepts

  217. in terms of what we must do.

  218. I want to try to correct that,

  219. but not entirely,

  220. because it's not all wrong,

  221. but it is incomplete.

  222. These are not merely things

  223. that we must do,

  224. actions that we must perform.

  225. By God's grace,

  226. I want to show you

  227. from this text

  228. that it is not only

  229. what we must do

  230. or that we must do them,

  231. but that we can do them.

  232. You actually can.

  233. not in a way that is

  234. a fake it till you make it

  235. kind of situation,

  236. but you,

  237. those who are in Christ,

  238. you can actually do

  239. what God is commanding you

  240. to do in this text.

  241. You can have authentic joy

  242. in the midst of grief.

  243. You can have confident,

  244. hopeful prayer.

  245. You can have grateful praise

  246. even in the most difficult

  247. moments of your life.

  248. You can suffer with joy.

  249. You can pray with confidence.

  250. You can find reasons

  251. for gratitude

  252. when all of your faith,

  253. love, and hope

  254. rest and are at rest

  255. in the person

  256. and the work of Jesus Christ.

  257. That's what these verses

  258. are about.

  259. That's what I hope to point out

  260. to you this morning.

  261. First thing I want to do,

  262. just two main things,

  263. but the first thing is this.

  264. I want us to look at

  265. the essence of the commands here.

  266. The essence of the commands.

  267. Look again,

  268. verse 16 to 18.

  269. Rejoice always,

  270. pray without ceasing,

  271. give thanks in all circumstances.

  272. Now I want to try to get ahead

  273. of a potential misunderstanding

  274. that I've witnessed before

  275. in some Christians.

  276. some have misunderstood

  277. these three commands

  278. to mean that expressing grief

  279. or acknowledging a serious struggle,

  280. maybe even a struggle of the soul,

  281. darkness of the soul

  282. as we would call it,

  283. that to experience those things,

  284. to feel those things,

  285. and to express those things

  286. is actually sinful.

  287. They wrongly believe

  288. or at least wrongly behave

  289. as if joy cannot exist with grief,

  290. as if prayers cannot be made

  291. in moments of confusion

  292. or maybe even doubt,

  293. or that thanksgiving cannot

  294. be true thanksgiving

  295. if it also admits hardship

  296. and difficulty.

  297. And what that kind of thinking

  298. results in

  299. is the appearance of joy

  300. that's not actually real.

  301. Prayer that is hollow,

  302. vain.

  303. Jesus said it of unbelievers

  304. that it is vain repetition

  305. that they think that they will be heard

  306. for their much speaking,

  307. but it's not prayer

  308. that's genuine from the heart.

  309. It's not informed by reality.

  310. It's just words,

  311. religious forms.

  312. It also results in displays

  313. of gratitude that may be misguided.

  314. They may express gratitude

  315. for something that God

  316. doesn't actually instruct us

  317. to be grateful for.

  318. Perhaps you've seen somebody

  319. who just out of confusion about this,

  320. they have the intention of obedience.

  321. They want to be obedient to the passage,

  322. but because they misunderstand

  323. what God has actually commanded here,

  324. they look at their suffering

  325. and they express gratitude

  326. for the suffering itself

  327. as if that's what God's asking them

  328. to do here.

  329. I don't think that's what God is asking.

  330. Now, I understand there is a way

  331. to do that

  332. that is genuine

  333. and good,

  334. but there are some

  335. who feel like

  336. what God is actually asking them to do

  337. is express this kind of

  338. feigned thanksgiving and joy

  339. for something

  340. that he hasn't actually told them

  341. that they must be thankful for.

  342. The result of all of that,

  343. the aura of all of that,

  344. it reeks of vain religion

  345. that is out of touch with reality.

  346. Now, I'm not suggesting

  347. that any of you think that way,

  348. but I have seen that.

  349. I've seen Christians

  350. who just,

  351. they don't have a good understanding

  352. of suffering,

  353. therefore they have

  354. a complete misunderstanding

  355. of what God's actually asking for here.

  356. That's not how we're to understand

  357. the essence of these commands.

  358. To ignore or to deny

  359. the experience of suffering,

  360. it actually robs these virtues

  361. of their meaning

  362. and of their power.

  363. Suffering is the backdrop

  364. against which Christian joy

  365. and hope and gratitude

  366. shine the brightest.

  367. A couple of weeks ago,

  368. I can't remember what brought it on.

  369. Maybe the girls were asking about it

  370. or Julie and I were talking

  371. about her engagement ring.

  372. One of the girls asked

  373. how much I paid for it.

  374. I don't know,

  375. a quarter,

  376. whatever it cost

  377. at the vending machine, right?

  378. We were talking about it.

  379. I remember when I would go

  380. to Jared's,

  381. that's the only place

  382. that I will allow myself

  383. to buy jewelry.

  384. We'll go to Jared's

  385. and what is it that they do

  386. with the jewelry?

  387. They pull it out of the case, right?

  388. They put it on that black felt thing

  389. or at least it's what they used to do.

  390. It's probably been 16 years

  391. since I've been in a jewelry store.

  392. They put it on the black.

  393. Why do they do that?

  394. They got the spotlights right above.

  395. They shine it down

  396. against the backdrop

  397. of that black felt board.

  398. The diamond shines brightest,

  399. doesn't it?

  400. When we think about Christian joy

  401. and Christian hope

  402. and Christian prayer,

  403. Christian gratitude,

  404. it shines brightest

  405. against the backdrop

  406. of suffering.

  407. It's not in ignorance

  408. or denial of grief

  409. but in the perseverance of joy

  410. through incredible grief

  411. that is the essence

  412. of these commands.

  413. And Paul affirmed this routinely

  414. when he spoke of his own suffering.

  415. I want to just read to you

  416. this one paragraph

  417. that he wrote

  418. in 2 Corinthians 1.

  419. He said,

  420. We do not want you

  421. to be unaware, brothers,

  422. of the affliction

  423. we experienced in Asia.

  424. He's being honest

  425. about his circumstance.

  426. We were so utterly burdened

  427. beyond our strength

  428. that we despaired

  429. of life itself.

  430. This is the Apostle Paul,

  431. the great Apostle.

  432. He's supposed to always

  433. be happy, right?

  434. I mean, that's who this guy is

  435. and he's saying,

  436. No, there's been some times

  437. it's been so hard

  438. that I just wanted to die.

  439. I just wanted to die.

  440. Indeed, he says,

  441. we felt that we had received

  442. the sentence of death.

  443. Oh, but that was to make us rely

  444. not on ourselves

  445. but on God

  446. who raises the dead.

  447. He delivered us

  448. from such a deadly peril

  449. and he will deliver us.

  450. On him we have set our hope

  451. that he will deliver us again.

  452. You also must help us by prayer

  453. so that many will give thanks

  454. on our behalf

  455. for the blessing granted to us

  456. through the prayers of many.

  457. Do you see what he's doing there?

  458. He's not denying serious suffering

  459. but he is showing that it is possible

  460. for a Christian

  461. to have true hope

  462. and joy

  463. and gratitude

  464. in the midst of intense suffering.

  465. The kind of suffering

  466. that when you lay at bed tonight

  467. you just ask God,

  468. Will you just take me already?

  469. These three commands

  470. are about more than

  471. outward religious performance.

  472. That's not what God is interested in.

  473. All of them are written as actions.

  474. They're verbs, aren't they?

  475. We are to rejoice.

  476. We are to pray.

  477. We are to give thanks.

  478. All of those are verbs.

  479. All of them, however,

  480. each action flows

  481. from an attitude toward God

  482. that is not manufactured.

  483. It's actually something

  484. that is settled

  485. in the heart

  486. of a believer

  487. and of a believer alone.

  488. There's a transformation

  489. of heart and mind

  490. that God graciously gives

  491. to those he saves.

  492. We read about it

  493. in 2 Corinthians 5

  494. in verse 17.

  495. Paul says,

  496. If anyone is in Christ,

  497. he is a new creation.

  498. The old has passed away.

  499. Behold, the new has come.

  500. All things made new.

  501. And we are to put on

  502. this new man.

  503. What does that actually mean?

  504. It means that we live

  505. consistently

  506. with what God

  507. has already done

  508. in us.

  509. This new creation,

  510. it includes

  511. the disposition

  512. of our heart

  513. toward God.

  514. God does that work in us.

  515. We don't do that

  516. for ourselves.

  517. He does that.

  518. So when God says

  519. that his will

  520. is that we rejoice,

  521. he is instructing us

  522. to express the joy

  523. that he has put

  524. in our hearts.

  525. To give voice

  526. to something

  527. that he has put

  528. in us.

  529. It's there.

  530. If you're in Christ,

  531. it's there.

  532. It may be hard to see

  533. at times,

  534. but it's there.

  535. And he says,

  536. I want you to give voice

  537. to it.

  538. I want you to rejoice.

  539. When he tells us

  540. to pray,

  541. he means for us

  542. to act upon

  543. the hope

  544. and faith

  545. that he's put in us.

  546. When he commands

  547. our thanksgiving,

  548. he is instructing us

  549. to give voice

  550. to the heart

  551. of worship

  552. that goes

  553. far beyond

  554. our present circumstance.

  555. What am I saying?

  556. These three commands

  557. are not about performance.

  558. So we need not

  559. look at them

  560. and say,

  561. well,

  562. if I'm going to obey God,

  563. I've got to find a way

  564. to fame joy

  565. and continue

  566. in hopeful prayer

  567. even when prayer

  568. is quite difficult

  569. and to just come up

  570. with some random thing

  571. that I can express

  572. thanksgiving for.

  573. No,

  574. that's not what this is about.

  575. It's not about performance.

  576. It's about our attitude

  577. of heart

  578. towards God.

  579. These commands

  580. don't require

  581. that we ignore

  582. or deny

  583. the reality

  584. of hardship,

  585. but that we faithfully

  586. persevere

  587. in genuine worship

  588. through

  589. our various sufferings.

  590. And it's in this way

  591. that God wills

  592. our sanctification

  593. in this text,

  594. preparing us

  595. for Christ's return

  596. when he will

  597. complete

  598. our joy

  599. and he will

  600. complete

  601. our hope

  602. and he will

  603. complete

  604. our thanksgiving

  605. in eternity.

  606. But of course,

  607. we understand

  608. when we come

  609. to a text like this,

  610. we understand

  611. God has done

  612. this work,

  613. he's asking us

  614. to give voice

  615. to something

  616. that he has done

  617. in us,

  618. but then we also

  619. know that

  620. our hearts

  621. can grow cold.

  622. Which is exactly

  623. why we need

  624. this kind of instruction

  625. again and again.

  626. Paul wrote

  627. these things

  628. to the Thessalonians

  629. in order to

  630. awaken in them

  631. something that

  632. may have become

  633. dull,

  634. but why would it

  635. have become dull?

  636. Well,

  637. some of them

  638. we know

  639. are living

  640. in sinful

  641. behaviors.

  642. Sin can make

  643. your heart

  644. grow dull.

  645. When you have

  646. sin in your life,

  647. it's going to be

  648. hard to express

  649. genuine joy

  650. and you probably

  651. won't want to

  652. pray very much

  653. because you

  654. understand the

  655. contradiction

  656. between your life

  657. and prayer.

  658. It will be hard

  659. to even think

  660. about thanksgiving

  661. because you're

  662. obsessed with

  663. this other thing

  664. that you want

  665. more than you want

  666. obedience to Christ.

  667. sin dulls our

  668. hearts to these

  669. things.

  670. It's not just

  671. sin,

  672. there's intense

  673. distress happening

  674. in the church.

  675. Distress,

  676. suffering,

  677. can dull our

  678. hearts.

  679. It's hard to

  680. find joy when

  681. you can't see a

  682. reason to feel

  683. joy.

  684. It's hard to

  685. pray when you've

  686. prayed again and

  687. again and again

  688. and it seems like

  689. God isn't

  690. listening.

  691. it's hard to

  692. express gratitude

  693. when you're

  694. finding it

  695. difficult to

  696. find anything

  697. that's worth

  698. being thankful

  699. for.

  700. Of course,

  701. we can pull

  702. out all kinds

  703. of random

  704. things that we

  705. know we're

  706. supposed to be

  707. thankful for

  708. but that doesn't

  709. mean that we're

  710. actually doing it.

  711. Our hearts can

  712. grow dull and

  713. cold.

  714. Of course,

  715. the difficulty

  716. here is not

  717. so much the

  718. commands themselves,

  719. it's the

  720. modifiers that

  721. follow them.

  722. we aren't

  723. told simply to

  724. rejoice.

  725. We're told to

  726. rejoice always.

  727. We aren't

  728. told simply

  729. to pray.

  730. We're instructed

  731. to never stop

  732. praying.

  733. We're not

  734. told to give

  735. thanks, we're

  736. told to do so

  737. in every

  738. circumstance.

  739. That's why

  740. these commands,

  741. we come to it

  742. and we think,

  743. if we're being

  744. honest with

  745. ourselves, we

  746. come to it

  747. and we think,

  748. this is not

  749. possible, how

  750. can this

  751. actually be

  752. possible to

  753. do the

  754. things?

  755. God's asking

  756. too much.

  757. Who can

  758. genuinely do

  759. these things

  760. at all times?

  761. We want to

  762. do these

  763. things at all

  764. times but

  765. who truly

  766. can?

  767. And the

  768. answer comes

  769. at the end

  770. of verse

  771. 18.

  772. So we've

  773. seen the

  774. essence of

  775. the commands,

  776. now I'm

  777. going to

  778. show you

  779. the basis

  780. for the

  781. commands.

  782. That God

  783. is not

  784. asking too

  785. much of

  786. you, he's

  787. actually

  788. commanding you

  789. to do

  790. something that

  791. he's made

  792. possible.

  793. Look again

  794. at verse

  795. 18.

  796. For this

  797. is the

  798. will of

  799. God in

  800. Christ Jesus

  801. for you.

  802. For this

  803. is the

  804. will of

  805. God in

  806. Christ Jesus

  807. for you.

  808. What seems

  809. impossible is

  810. suddenly made

  811. possible when we

  812. think about this

  813. last statement.

  814. Think about how

  815. Paul could have

  816. said this.

  817. He could have

  818. said, rejoice

  819. always, pray

  820. without ceasing,

  821. give thanks in

  822. all circumstances

  823. for this is the

  824. will of God

  825. for you.

  826. He could have

  827. said that.

  828. He doesn't

  829. say that.

  830. It would be

  831. incomplete if he

  832. said that.

  833. Oh, the

  834. addition of

  835. in Christ

  836. Jesus is of

  837. utmost importance

  838. to the

  839. instructions.

  840. It roots the

  841. command for

  842. constant joy

  843. and persistent

  844. prayer and

  845. continual

  846. thanksgiving.

  847. It roots it

  848. solely in the

  849. good news of

  850. Jesus.

  851. The impossible

  852. is made

  853. possible in

  854. Christ alone.

  855. God doesn't

  856. command us to

  857. rejoice because

  858. of our sorrow

  859. but to rejoice

  860. in our sorrow

  861. because Jesus

  862. has conquered

  863. our grief and

  864. will bring it

  865. to an end

  866. that is coming.

  867. That's how we

  868. can rejoice in

  869. Christ.

  870. God doesn't

  871. instruct us to

  872. pray because he

  873. will always grant

  874. our request.

  875. He makes no

  876. such promises.

  877. He invites us

  878. to pray.

  879. We know that

  880. prayer is a

  881. means by which

  882. he does very

  883. often grant

  884. our request.

  885. But that's not

  886. why he says to

  887. pray without

  888. ceasing.

  889. He says to

  890. pray without

  891. ceasing because

  892. in Christ

  893. Jesus we

  894. can pray.

  895. We have

  896. access to

  897. the throne

  898. of God

  899. through our

  900. great high

  901. priest Jesus

  902. Christ.

  903. Why wouldn't

  904. we pray

  905. when we have

  906. such wonderful

  907. privilege?

  908. God doesn't

  909. demand our

  910. thanksgiving

  911. because life is

  912. always good.

  913. He commands

  914. our thanksgiving

  915. because Jesus

  916. is always good

  917. even when life

  918. is not.

  919. The radical

  920. call to rejoice

  921. always and pray

  922. without ceasing

  923. and give thanks

  924. in all circumstances

  925. really it's

  926. fundamentally a

  927. call to view

  928. every moment

  929. in light of the

  930. fact that you

  931. belong to Jesus.

  932. that's what

  933. this is about.

  934. Living every

  935. moment of our

  936. life understanding

  937. every circumstance

  938. viewing all of

  939. life and all

  940. that we see

  941. and experience

  942. viewing it with

  943. the understanding

  944. that I belong

  945. to Jesus.

  946. I am his

  947. and he is

  948. mine.

  949. Isn't that the

  950. message that

  951. seems to be

  952. coursing through

  953. this entire

  954. letter?

  955. Christ is

  956. coming back

  957. to redeem

  958. his people

  959. and judge

  960. his enemies.

  961. Things may be

  962. tough right now

  963. but take heart

  964. you belong to

  965. Jesus and he

  966. will not forsake

  967. you over

  968. and over

  969. and over

  970. this is the

  971. theme that

  972. comes to the

  973. surface in

  974. this letter

  975. to the

  976. Thessalonians.

  977. So you can

  978. keep rejoicing

  979. in the pain.

  980. You can

  981. keep praying

  982. through the

  983. confusion.

  984. You can

  985. give thanks

  986. in the

  987. suffering

  988. because you

  989. belong to

  990. him and

  991. he's coming

  992. back and

  993. he's going to

  994. make all

  995. things right

  996. and we will

  997. be with him

  998. in eternity.

  999. That's

  1000. 1 Thessalonians.

  1001. The reality

  1002. of the

  1003. Thessalonians

  1004. suffering made

  1005. these attitudes

  1006. and actions

  1007. difficult but

  1008. the fact of

  1009. their salvation

  1010. made them

  1011. possible.

  1012. I want to

  1013. say that

  1014. again.

  1015. The reality

  1016. of the

  1017. Thessalonians

  1018. suffering made

  1019. these attitudes

  1020. and actions

  1021. difficult,

  1022. maybe even

  1023. seemingly

  1024. impossible but

  1025. the fact of

  1026. their salvation

  1027. made them

  1028. very possible.

  1029. Yes,

  1030. they were

  1031. enduring

  1032. significant

  1033. hardship but

  1034. consider what

  1035. else the letter

  1036. says was

  1037. true of them.

  1038. In chapter

  1039. 1 and

  1040. verse 4

  1041. we're told

  1042. that they

  1043. are loved

  1044. and chosen

  1045. by God.

  1046. In several

  1047. places we are

  1048. told that they

  1049. are filled

  1050. by the Holy

  1051. Spirit.

  1052. In chapter

  1053. 1 verses 5

  1054. and 6

  1055. they are filled

  1056. with the power

  1057. of the Holy

  1058. Spirit.

  1059. A few verses

  1060. later they are

  1061. given the joy

  1062. of the Holy

  1063. Spirit.

  1064. When we get

  1065. to chapter 4

  1066. we find that

  1067. they have been

  1068. given by God

  1069. His Holy

  1070. Spirit.

  1071. That's true

  1072. of them.

  1073. In chapter

  1074. 1 and

  1075. verse 10

  1076. we find that

  1077. they have

  1078. been delivered

  1079. by Christ

  1080. from God's

  1081. future wrath.

  1082. In chapter

  1083. 2 and

  1084. verse 12

  1085. they've been

  1086. called into

  1087. God's kingdom

  1088. and glory.

  1089. In chapter

  1090. 2 and

  1091. verse 13

  1092. they were

  1093. being transformed

  1094. by God's

  1095. word.

  1096. In chapter

  1097. 3 and

  1098. verse 8

  1099. they were

  1100. standing

  1101. firm

  1102. in the

  1103. Lord.

  1104. In chapter

  1105. 3 and

  1106. verse 13

  1107. they were

  1108. being established

  1109. in holiness

  1110. by God

  1111. Himself.

  1112. In chapter

  1113. 4 and

  1114. verse 14

  1115. they received

  1116. the promise

  1117. of resurrection

  1118. on the basis

  1119. of Jesus'

  1120. resurrection.

  1121. In chapter

  1122. 4 and

  1123. verse 17

  1124. they received

  1125. the promise

  1126. that whether

  1127. living or

  1128. dead

  1129. they will

  1130. spend

  1131. forever

  1132. in the

  1133. presence of

  1134. Christ.

  1135. chapter 5

  1136. verses 9

  1137. and 10

  1138. they are

  1139. destined

  1140. not for

  1141. wrath

  1142. but to

  1143. obtain

  1144. salvation.

  1145. If we

  1146. spend all

  1147. of our

  1148. time

  1149. looking at

  1150. 1 Thessalonians

  1151. and thinking

  1152. wow

  1153. what a

  1154. hard life

  1155. they lived.

  1156. What a

  1157. shame for

  1158. us.

  1159. They didn't

  1160. think that

  1161. way.

  1162. You hear

  1163. all of that

  1164. encouragement.

  1165. Yes

  1166. things were

  1167. hard but

  1168. that's not

  1169. all that was

  1170. true of

  1171. them.

  1172. No

  1173. they were

  1174. in Christ

  1175. and they

  1176. were going

  1177. to receive

  1178. all the

  1179. benefits and

  1180. privileges of

  1181. being in

  1182. Christ.

  1183. That is what

  1184. was true of

  1185. them.

  1186. That's why

  1187. Paul could

  1188. write and

  1189. say it's

  1190. God's will

  1191. that you

  1192. keep rejoicing

  1193. in your

  1194. hardship and

  1195. that you

  1196. keep praying

  1197. in your

  1198. doubt and

  1199. that you

  1200. keep giving

  1201. thanks in

  1202. all circumstances

  1203. because you

  1204. belong to

  1205. him.

  1206. You can

  1207. do this

  1208. in Christ.

  1209. And if

  1210. you're a

  1211. Christian this

  1212. morning everything

  1213. that we just

  1214. read about the

  1215. Thessalonians

  1216. that's true

  1217. of you.

  1218. You too

  1219. have been

  1220. delivered from

  1221. the wrath to

  1222. come.

  1223. You too

  1224. have been

  1225. given the

  1226. presence and

  1227. power of the

  1228. Holy Spirit.

  1229. He is in

  1230. you.

  1231. He has put

  1232. joy in your

  1233. heart.

  1234. His word

  1235. is at work

  1236. in you.

  1237. It's transforming

  1238. you.

  1239. You have the

  1240. promise of a

  1241. future resurrection.

  1242. You will be

  1243. forever with

  1244. the Lord.

  1245. You are

  1246. destined by

  1247. God,

  1248. determined by

  1249. God to

  1250. obtain salvation

  1251. in the end.

  1252. That's true

  1253. of you.

  1254. God's will is

  1255. that you

  1256. remember who

  1257. you are in

  1258. Christ at

  1259. all times so

  1260. that in every

  1261. circumstance you

  1262. can give voice

  1263. to what he has

  1264. done for you

  1265. and what he

  1266. has done in

  1267. you.

  1268. Truly,

  1269. at all times

  1270. and in all

  1271. circumstances,

  1272. you can rejoice.

  1273. You can pray

  1274. and you can give

  1275. thanks because

  1276. you're in

  1277. Christ.

  1278. Christ.

  1279. Now, if you're

  1280. not a

  1281. Christian,

  1282. I'm glad

  1283. you're here

  1284. and I hope

  1285. you will come

  1286. to understand

  1287. the wonder

  1288. of this

  1289. gospel that

  1290. I'm speaking

  1291. of now.

  1292. But what I

  1293. want to say

  1294. to you now

  1295. is that Jesus

  1296. really is this

  1297. good.

  1298. He really

  1299. is.

  1300. Listen to

  1301. how he

  1302. described the

  1303. salvation that

  1304. he gives in

  1305. Matthew's gospel.

  1306. These are two

  1307. of my favorite

  1308. parables.

  1309. In Matthew

  1310. 13,

  1311. Jesus said,

  1312. the kingdom

  1313. of heaven

  1314. is like a

  1315. treasure hidden

  1316. in a field

  1317. which a man

  1318. found and

  1319. covered up.

  1320. Then in his

  1321. joy,

  1322. he goes and

  1323. he sells all

  1324. that he has

  1325. and he buys

  1326. that field.

  1327. And then he

  1328. continues,

  1329. again,

  1330. the kingdom

  1331. of heaven

  1332. is like a

  1333. merchant in

  1334. search of

  1335. fine pearls

  1336. who on

  1337. finding one

  1338. pearl of

  1339. great value

  1340. went and

  1341. sold all

  1342. that he

  1343. had

  1344. and bought

  1345. it.

  1346. Now,

  1347. what's the

  1348. point?

  1349. Jesus is

  1350. the treasure

  1351. in the

  1352. field.

  1353. Jesus is

  1354. the pearl

  1355. of immeasurable

  1356. value.

  1357. He really

  1358. is as good

  1359. as the word

  1360. says that he

  1361. is.

  1362. Apart from

  1363. him,

  1364. we are all

  1365. destined for

  1366. God's wrath.

  1367. We're destined

  1368. for that

  1369. because God

  1370. is holy

  1371. and we

  1372. are born

  1373. sinners.

  1374. We are in

  1375. rebellion

  1376. against him.

  1377. But on

  1378. the cross,

  1379. Jesus,

  1380. the sinless

  1381. son of

  1382. God,

  1383. bore

  1384. God's

  1385. wrath

  1386. in our

  1387. place.

  1388. He took

  1389. the place

  1390. of every

  1391. sinner

  1392. sinner

  1393. who will

  1394. believe,

  1395. who will

  1396. trust in

  1397. him and

  1398. follow him

  1399. as Lord.

  1400. Only those

  1401. who are safe

  1402. in Christ

  1403. can rejoice

  1404. always and

  1405. pray without

  1406. ceasing and

  1407. give thanks in

  1408. every circumstance.

  1409. And you

  1410. can be safe

  1411. in Christ

  1412. today

  1413. and forever.

  1414. if you

  1415. will be like

  1416. that man

  1417. in the

  1418. field

  1419. and like

  1420. that merchant

  1421. searching for

  1422. pearls.

  1423. This life,

  1424. it offers a

  1425. lot of

  1426. things.

  1427. And you

  1428. may be

  1429. satisfied to

  1430. some extent

  1431. with what

  1432. it's offered

  1433. you.

  1434. But when

  1435. you finally

  1436. see Jesus

  1437. for who

  1438. he really

  1439. is and

  1440. what he

  1441. really is

  1442. and what

  1443. he has

  1444. done,

  1445. everything

  1446. else in

  1447. this life,

  1448. as Paul

  1449. said to

  1450. the Philippians,

  1451. will feel

  1452. like

  1453. rubbish.

  1454. And the

  1455. great thing

  1456. about it

  1457. is he

  1458. just invites

  1459. us to

  1460. receive it.

  1461. He does

  1462. all of

  1463. this and

  1464. he doesn't

  1465. even put a

  1466. cover charge.

  1467. He says,

  1468. just come

  1469. to me.

  1470. All who

  1471. are burdened

  1472. and heavy

  1473. laden,

  1474. I will

  1475. give you

  1476. rest.

  1477. You will

  1478. find rest

  1479. for your

  1480. soul in

  1481. me alone

  1482. so that

  1483. when

  1484. everything

  1485. else

  1486. around

  1487. you

  1488. is

  1489. falling

  1490. apart

  1491. and

  1492. all

  1493. the

  1494. suffering

  1495. that

  1496. you're

  1497. enduring,

  1498. you can

  1499. actually have

  1500. true joy

  1501. because you

  1502. have rest

  1503. in your

  1504. soul

  1505. because Jesus

  1506. has put it

  1507. there.

  1508. In the end,

  1509. to rejoice

  1510. always,

  1511. to pray

  1512. without ceasing,

  1513. to give

  1514. thanks in

  1515. all circumstances

  1516. is to live

  1517. like you

  1518. belong to

  1519. God.

  1520. That's what

  1521. sanctification is

  1522. all about,

  1523. isn't it?

  1524. It's God's

  1525. people living

  1526. like God's

  1527. people.

  1528. But it's

  1529. not an easy

  1530. task and we

  1531. know that and I

  1532. don't mean to

  1533. present it as if

  1534. it is easy.

  1535. We do

  1536. regularly fail

  1537. to live up to

  1538. it.

  1539. we're grateful

  1540. that the promise

  1541. even of this

  1542. chapter is

  1543. that God is

  1544. going to

  1545. complete all

  1546. of this in

  1547. us one day

  1548. and this

  1549. will not be a

  1550. struggle anymore.

  1551. But for now,

  1552. it will be a

  1553. daily struggle.

  1554. I think that's

  1555. why God is

  1556. pleased for us

  1557. to grow in

  1558. Christian community

  1559. and I want to

  1560. zoom out just

  1561. for a moment

  1562. from 16 to

  1563. 18 to see

  1564. its place

  1565. in this

  1566. section.

  1567. The verse

  1568. before it,

  1569. it led with

  1570. see to it

  1571. that no one,

  1572. that is other

  1573. believers,

  1574. see to it

  1575. that we will

  1576. not repay evil

  1577. for evil but

  1578. that we will

  1579. always do good.

  1580. Well,

  1581. there's no break

  1582. in the thought

  1583. between verse 15

  1584. and verse 16.

  1585. It is a different

  1586. unit that Paul

  1587. is focused on

  1588. but all of it's

  1589. working together.

  1590. We might

  1591. understand this

  1592. rejoicing and

  1593. this prayer and

  1594. this thanksgiving

  1595. as flowing out

  1596. of our responsibility

  1597. in verse 15

  1598. to ensure

  1599. that one another

  1600. are doing it.

  1601. You know what

  1602. that means?

  1603. That means we

  1604. need to see to

  1605. it that each

  1606. other are

  1607. always rejoicing,

  1608. always praying,

  1609. that are always

  1610. giving thanks.

  1611. And when we

  1612. understand our

  1613. own hearts,

  1614. we understand that

  1615. we actually need

  1616. one another to

  1617. help encourage us

  1618. in this,

  1619. don't we?

  1620. we need each

  1621. other.

  1622. This section

  1623. that flows out

  1624. of that instruction

  1625. and we must

  1626. see to it

  1627. that everyone

  1628. lives in light

  1629. of their standing

  1630. in Christ,

  1631. rejoicing,

  1632. praying,

  1633. giving thanks.

  1634. In Christ,

  1635. it's possible

  1636. and we should

  1637. continue in these

  1638. things as we

  1639. eagerly await

  1640. his return.

  1641. Let's pray.
