  1. Chapter 5, verses 19 to 22.

  2. Do not quench the Spirit.

  3. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything.

  4. Hold fast to what is good.

  5. Abstain from every form of evil.

  6. So in this final unit of instruction here, as he's closing his letter,

  7. Paul turns our attention and the attention of the Thessalonian church

  8. to the mighty work of the Holy Spirit,

  9. but particularly in the Christian sanctification.

  10. The text affirms a few things for us here that are helpful.

  11. It affirms that the Spirit is indeed at work in the church,

  12. preparing believers for the glorious return of Christ.

  13. It also teaches us that this sanctifying work

  14. is one in which we must actively participate,

  15. pursuing the purity that he will complete at the end.

  16. And what we discover immediately here in these verses

  17. is that we can actually stifle the Spirit's work in us.

  18. And we do that in this case and in the context of this passage

  19. by treating the various means of the Spirit's work with contempt.

  20. So the Spirit is working.

  21. We need to pursue that work,

  22. but we also need to be warned that we can stifle that work.

  23. And there are particular ways that Paul is intent

  24. to highlight how that might be done.

  25. There was a specific way in the Thessalonian church

  26. where these Christians were quenching the Spirit's sanctifying work,

  27. and it all had to do with contempt for the gift of prophecy,

  28. which for them was a critical means of the Spirit's operation

  29. in establishing the church.

  30. So we're taught in the passage here that as we await Christ's return,

  31. we must be careful not to quench the Spirit's work

  32. by despising the Spirit's ways.

  33. And at the heart of the text is the most significant

  34. and powerful means of the Spirit's mighty work in our lives

  35. so that we would understand that if we truly desire to live

  36. in a manner worthy of God,

  37. who calls us into His kingdom and glory,

  38. as we saw in chapter 2,

  39. we must take this instruction seriously.

  40. That the Spirit is at work,

  41. and He's at work in a particular way,

  42. and that His most primary and powerful means of work

  43. is actually what's at the heart of what we find here.

  44. I have just two simple headings

  45. that conform to Paul's imperatives here.

  46. The first one is this.

  47. Don't hinder the Spirit's work.

  48. Don't hinder the Spirit's work.

  49. It's very plain for us in verse 19.

  50. Do not quench the Spirit.

  51. It's a simple, straightforward statement.

  52. It's the main idea of what Paul is going to go on

  53. and expand upon in verses 20 and 22.

  54. It moves our focus to the work of the Holy Spirit

  55. and our sanctification in particular.

  56. There's two fundamental truths here

  57. that are worthy of our meditation.

  58. The first is an encouragement.

  59. The second then would be a warning.

  60. And the encouragement, as I've already mentioned,

  61. is this,

  62. that the Holy Spirit of God

  63. is actively working in the lives of His people.

  64. He's actively working in the lives of His people.

  65. We understand that the Spirit of God

  66. is the agent who applies the work of Christ

  67. to the individual.

  68. That if the Son supplies through His atonement our salvation,

  69. the Spirit applies the work of the atonement for our salvation.

  70. And the Bible tells us that the activity of the Holy Spirit

  71. in our salvation is amazingly vast.

  72. We could spend several sermons

  73. just thinking about and meditating on

  74. and reflecting on the various ways that the Spirit works.

  75. In fact, the Old Testament actually indicates

  76. that this would be a sign of the coming kingdom.

  77. It would mark out Christ's kingdom in the world.

  78. And of course, that was inaugurated

  79. on the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  80. There's a lot of ways that the Bible speaks

  81. of the Spirit's work.

  82. For our purposes this morning in relationship to this text,

  83. I want to highlight just two of them,

  84. regeneration and sanctification.

  85. Regeneration and sanctification.

  86. Regeneration is the work of the Spirit

  87. to take one who is spiritually dead in sins

  88. and bring them to life in Jesus Christ.

  89. It's what Jesus was referring to

  90. in that great conversation with Nicodemus

  91. in John chapter 3 when He told Nicodemus

    John 3 chapter mention

  92. that to enter the kingdom of God,

  93. one must be born again of the Holy Spirit.

  94. The Spirit applies the atonement of Christ

  95. to the individual through the work of regeneration.

  96. And He does so through the preaching of the gospel.

  97. The gospel of John tells us in so many different places,

  98. Jesus is teaching about this.

  99. In John 15, 26, Jesus says that when the Spirit comes,

  100. He will bear witness about me.

  101. That is, He will guide our hearts.

  102. He will indicate the work of the Holy Spirit

  103. and the application of the atonement to our lives.

  104. He would go on to say later,

  105. 2 Corinthians chapter 4,

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  106. Paul would speak of those who are blinded by sin,

  107. blinded by the God of this world,

  108. but that God shines in their hearts

  109. the light of the knowledge of the glory of Christ Jesus.

  110. And what is the agent by which He does that work?

  111. It is the Holy Spirit of God that He does that.

  112. If you are a Christian today,

  113. you are a Christian

  114. because the Holy Spirit of God

  115. has brought your dead soul to life in Christ.

  116. Through the gospel,

  117. the Spirit applies salvation,

  118. bringing sinners to life,

  119. calling us to repent

  120. and to believe.

  121. Loved ones,

  122. if you are not born again,

  123. you will not enter the kingdom.

  124. You cannot be saved.

  125. That's Jesus' message

  126. and that's what the Holy Spirit does.

  127. We find that clearly stated.

  128. Titus chapter 3,

    Titus 3 chapter mention

  129. He saved us not because of works

  130. done by us in righteousness,

  131. but according to His own mercy,

  132. by the washing of regeneration

  133. and renewal of the Holy Spirit.

  134. He poured out on us richly

  135. through Jesus Christ our Savior

  136. so that being justified by His grace,

  137. we might become heirs

  138. according to the hope of eternal life.

  139. The Spirit is actively at work in His people,

  140. first in regeneration,

  141. but then we find in connection to this text

  142. in 1 Thessalonians 5,

  143. the Spirit is actively at work in His people

  144. through the work of sanctification.

  145. Sanctification being the work of the Spirit

  146. to take one who is born again

  147. and make them holy.

  148. Of course, we understand that at the moment

  149. we come to faith in Christ,

  150. positionally we are holy,

  151. the righteousness of Christ imputed to us,

  152. but in this life,

  153. until the return of Christ,

  154. the Spirit is at work in us,

  155. purifying us,

  156. sanctifying us,

  157. making us holy.

  158. But whereas regeneration

  159. is solely the work of God,

  160. sanctification is a lifelong process

  161. in which we cooperate with God's work

  162. to grow in holiness.

  163. So the Scriptures command us again and again,

  164. things like walk in the Spirit

  165. in Galatians 5.

  166. Be filled with the Spirit

  167. in Ephesians 5.

  168. Keep in step with the Spirit

  169. again in Galatians 5.

  170. All of those being imperatives for us.

  171. The power is in the Spirit's work.

  172. It's in His grace,

  173. but in our sanctification.

  174. We pursue that work.

  175. We cooperate with the Spirit's work

  176. in our lives.

  177. There's tremendous encouragement in this,

  178. isn't there?

  179. The Spirit is working.

  180. What a joy to know that.

  181. We've seen it in the letter

  182. several times already, haven't we?

  183. Chapter 1 and verse 5,

  184. the gospel message was spoken to them

  185. in the power of the Holy Spirit,

  186. meaning the Spirit of God saved them

  187. when Paul preached the gospel to them.

  188. He was at work in the regeneration

  189. of the Thessalonians.

  190. And just a verse later in chapter 1,

  191. and it was through this regenerative work

  192. of the Spirit

  193. that the joy of the Spirit

  194. was put in them,

  195. which led to their perseverance of faith

  196. as they faced incredible hardship

  197. and persecution.

  198. And then we get to chapter 4 and verse 8,

  199. and we find that God gives the Spirit

  200. as a gift to His people.

  201. To do what?

  202. To help them live according

  203. to the will of God.

  204. What a joy.

  205. That's an encouragement.

  206. Simple statement.

  207. Yes, in verse 19,

  208. don't quench the Spirit,

  209. but one amazing encouragement

  210. is that the Spirit is actively at work.

  211. He saves us,

  212. and He's working to sanctify us.

  213. And what a joy it is to know

  214. that He's doing so.

  215. But there's also a warning in verse 19,

  216. isn't there?

  217. It's not only an encouragement.

  218. There's a warning that goes along with it.

  219. The warning of verse 19 is simply

  220. that though the Holy Spirit

  221. is actively at work in and through us,

  222. we can't actually easily hinder

  223. His sanctifying work in our lives.

  224. Quench here, of course,

  225. it means to extinguish.

  226. It's like pouring water on a fire.

  227. It's an appropriate metaphor, isn't it?

  228. The Scriptures often comparing

  229. comparing the Holy Spirit to a fire.

  230. It's not that the Spirit Himself

  231. can be extinguished,

  232. but that we can hinder His work

  233. through sin,

  234. through neglect

  235. of the means of the Spirit.

  236. And so, the Bible instructs us,

  237. again, in several places,

  238. things like,

  239. do not grieve the Spirit

  240. in Ephesians 4.

  241. Do not resist the Spirit

  242. in Acts 7.

  243. And then, of course, here,

  244. we're commanded not to quench the Spirit.

  245. So, be encouraged.

  246. God is pleased

  247. to do a mighty work in your life

  248. through His Spirit,

  249. but be warned

  250. that there are ways

  251. that you can stifle that work,

  252. which is the primary focus

  253. of these four verses.

  254. Paul is going on

  255. in verses 20 to 22

  256. to address a specific way

  257. that the Thessalonians

  258. were quenching the Spirit.

  259. So, if we're going to follow

  260. the two headings,

  261. the first one is

  262. don't hinder the Spirit's work.

  263. The second one would then be

  264. don't despise the Spirit's ways.

  265. Don't despise the Spirit's ways.

  266. Look again at verses 20 to 22.

  267. Do not despise prophecies,

  268. but test everything.

  269. Hold fast what is good

  270. and abstain from every form of evil.

  271. These verses tell us

  272. how the Thessalonian Christians

  273. were quenching the Spirit's work in them.

  274. It has to do with their treatment

  275. of prophecies.

  276. In this case,

  277. prophecies refers to

  278. a unique gifting

  279. of the Holy Spirit

  280. on individual Christians

  281. for the purpose

  282. of building up the church.

  283. I want to show you two texts

  284. that help us to understand this

  285. and wrap our minds around

  286. how the Thessalonians

  287. would have understood

  288. this instruction.

  289. The first one is in

  290. 1 Corinthians 12.

  291. In fact,

  292. you could read

  293. 1 Corinthians 12 through 14

  294. and find a lot of instruction

  295. even specifically

  296. about prophecy,

  297. but let me just point out

  298. a couple of verses

  299. to you here.

  300. Paul says,

  301. there are a variety of gifts

  302. but the same Spirit.

  303. In other words,

  304. part of the Spirit's

  305. activity and working

  306. is to gift His people

  307. in order to use them

  308. in particular ways.

  309. There are varieties of service

  310. but the same Lord.

  311. There are varieties of activities

  312. but it is the same God

  313. who empowers them all

  314. in everyone.

  315. And then he begins to list

  316. a number of these giftings

  317. and right in the middle

  318. of the list

  319. is this idea of prophecy.

  320. He says,

  321. the Spirit gives

  322. to another prophecy

  323. and to another

  324. the ability to distinguish

  325. between spirits

  326. which is connected

  327. in this case

  328. to this idea of prophecy.

  329. And then at the end

  330. of the paragraph

  331. he says,

  332. all these are empowered

  333. by one and the same Spirit

  334. who apportions

  335. to each one individually

  336. as He will.

  337. And we see a similar statement

  338. in Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  339. Paul says,

  340. having gifts that differ

  341. according to the grace

  342. given to us

  343. let us use them

  344. and he highlights

  345. this gift again

  346. if prophecy

  347. that we would do it

  348. in proportion

  349. to our faith.

  350. Now,

  351. we don't know as much

  352. about this gift

  353. and how it functioned

  354. in the early church

  355. as we would like to

  356. but we do have enough here

  357. to get our bearings.

  358. It wasn't simply preaching

  359. which involves proclaiming

  360. and explaining

  361. a particular text

  362. of Scripture.

  363. That's not exactly

  364. what's happening here.

  365. That's not how

  366. the Thessalonians

  367. would have understood

  368. this instruction.

  369. Prophecy

  370. was a spontaneous

  371. and extemporaneous

  372. revelation from God

  373. spoken by a Christian

  374. to encourage,

  375. instruct,

  376. and warn

  377. God's people.

  378. Preaching and teaching

  379. is a different category.

  380. It is prophetic

  381. in its nature

  382. but it's a different category.

  383. Preaching and teaching

  384. involve

  385. the Scriptures themselves,

  386. speaking the Scriptures,

  387. explaining the Scriptures.

  388. This function

  389. of prophecy

  390. in the early church

  391. is not exactly that.

  392. it's this spontaneous

  393. revelation from God

  394. through a Christian

  395. for the building up

  396. of God's people.

  397. And it wasn't necessarily

  398. foretelling the future

  399. though certainly

  400. that would have been

  401. the case

  402. at times.

  403. It was also

  404. forth telling

  405. the will of God

  406. regarding present circumstances.

  407. And in the early church age

  408. this was

  409. a regular means

  410. of the Holy Spirit

  411. working

  412. to sanctify believers.

  413. Now remember

  414. that's the context

  415. of what we're dealing with

  416. in 1 Thessalonians 5.

  417. The idea

  418. is

  419. our sanctification

  420. and growing

  421. in that sanctification

  422. as we await

  423. the return of Christ.

  424. And Paul says

  425. don't quench the Spirit.

  426. The Spirit's at work

  427. in this sanctification

  428. and you can hinder it.

  429. And one of the ways

  430. you guys are hindering it

  431. he says to the Thessalonians

  432. is by despising prophecies.

  433. Don't hinder that work.

  434. That's a way

  435. the Spirit is working in you.

  436. Don't despise it.

  437. Apparently

  438. the Thessalonians

  439. had grown

  440. weary

  441. of those claiming

  442. to have

  443. a prophetic word

  444. from God.

  445. Began to

  446. reject the notion

  447. of prophecy

  448. outright.

  449. Now

  450. we've spent

  451. enough time

  452. in this letter

  453. to acknowledge

  454. that it is not surprising

  455. that they would have

  456. come to this point.

  457. We've seen

  458. that

  459. charlatans

  460. were actively

  461. at work

  462. religious

  463. and philosophical

  464. in Macedonia.

  465. Who could they trust?

  466. Paul even

  467. almost gives

  468. a defense

  469. of himself

  470. in chapter 2

  471. in relationship

  472. to this

  473. marking himself

  474. out as distinctly

  475. different from

  476. the charlatans

  477. of the day

  478. who had come in

  479. and were attempting

  480. to deceive the people.

  481. If you read ahead

  482. in 2 Thessalonians

  483. you find that

  484. there's a moment

  485. there where it seems

  486. that some

  487. of these people

  488. were actually

  489. maybe even writing

  490. letters to the

  491. Thessalonians

  492. under the guise

  493. of being

  494. from Paul.

  495. And they were saying

  496. things like

  497. the Lord's already

  498. come back

  499. and Paul says

  500. no,

  501. no,

  502. if you hear a spirit

  503. or a prophecy

  504. is what he means

  505. from that

  506. or a letter

  507. or somebody

  508. saying this

  509. as if we have

  510. said it

  511. no,

  512. that's not true

  513. Paul says.

  514. So it's not hard

  515. to see

  516. that this church

  517. would have probably

  518. grown a little bit

  519. weary

  520. of this kind of thing

  521. and just decided

  522. you know

  523. the easiest thing

  524. is just to not

  525. even listen to that.

  526. If it's not coming

  527. directly from Paul

  528. then we're not

  529. even going to hear it.

  530. If it's not coming

  531. directly from

  532. an apostolic witness

  533. then we won't listen.

  534. Perhaps that's

  535. what's happening here.

  536. Jesus and his

  537. apostles

  538. they all warned

  539. often of

  540. false prophets

  541. who would attack

  542. the church

  543. as wolves

  544. in sheep's clothing.

  545. We know this was common

  546. and it's just as common

  547. today.

  548. Paul understood

  549. their despising

  550. of this gift

  551. and means

  552. of the Spirit's work

  553. as being something

  554. that was hindering

  555. their sanctification.

  556. He understood it

  557. to be a huge problem.

  558. By despising

  559. the Spirit's ways

  560. they were inadvertently

  561. quenching the Spirit's work

  562. and were therefore

  563. hindering their ability

  564. to continue

  565. in their process

  566. of sanctification

  567. as they awaited

  568. the Lord's return.

  569. The solution then

  570. Paul says

  571. is not to despise

  572. prophecies

  573. but rather to

  574. test them.

  575. He says

  576. don't despise them

  577. test everything.

  578. Rather than dismiss

  579. the means of the Spirit

  580. test everything

  581. against what?

  582. Against the Old Testament

  583. Scriptures

  584. whatever they might have

  585. had with that.

  586. Against the apostolic

  587. witness of the gospel

  588. that we know

  589. they had

  590. from Paul

  591. and now

  592. Timothy

  593. who has returned

  594. since Paul

  595. was forced to leave.

  596. And through that testing

  597. they were to hold

  598. fast

  599. to everything

  600. that was good.

  601. Those things

  602. which were in line

  603. with apostolic doctrine

  604. and they were to

  605. abstain

  606. from everything

  607. that appeared

  608. to be evil

  609. or what they would

  610. determine

  611. was inconsistent

  612. with what they knew

  613. to be true

  614. from the apostolic

  615. witness.

  616. And this instruction

  617. holds true today.

  618. Test

  619. everything

  620. against what?

  621. The Scripture

  622. both old and new.

  623. Every idea

  624. every thought

  625. every action

  626. every counsel

  627. you receive

  628. should be tested

  629. against the truth

  630. of God

  631. in Jesus.

  632. And in so doing

  633. we must hold fast

  634. to what is good

  635. according to the Word

  636. of God

  637. and we must reject

  638. every form

  639. of evil

  640. that is inconsistent

  641. with the Word

  642. of God.

  643. And in this way

  644. we today

  645. like the Thessalonians

  646. rightly cooperate

  647. with the Spirit

  648. in His sanctifying work.

  649. We might understand

  650. these verses

  651. this way

  652. if we could just

  653. paraphrase them

  654. a little differently.

  655. Don't quench

  656. the Spirit

  657. by despising prophecies.

  658. Instead

  659. test everything

  660. you hear

  661. holding to what

  662. is good

  663. and resisting

  664. what is evil.

  665. And the imperative

  666. holds true now.

  667. This introduces

  668. a huge question

  669. doesn't it?

  670. Are we then

  671. to expect

  672. the Spirit

  673. to work

  674. through prophecies

  675. now

  676. as He did

  677. then?

  678. And that's how

  679. I want to close

  680. our study

  681. and apply

  682. the text

  683. finally.

  684. The gift

  685. of prophecy

  686. as the Thessalonians

  687. knew it

  688. as it is

  689. referenced

  690. here in the New Testament

  691. served a unique

  692. and temporary

  693. purpose

  694. in the early church.

  695. One purpose

  696. was the fulfilling

  697. of what the Old Testament

  698. prophesied.

  699. Joel chapter 2

    Joel 2 chapter mention

  700. God speaking

  701. through His prophet

  702. He says

  703. on that day

  704. on the day

  705. of the Lord

  706. I'm going to

  707. pour out

  708. the Spirit

  709. and your sons

  710. and daughters

  711. are going to

  712. prophesy.

  713. And we fast forward

  714. to Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  715. this phenomenon

  716. is happening

  717. in Jerusalem

  718. and Peter

  719. stands up

  720. to preach

  721. to explain it

  722. and as he does so

  723. what does he do?

  724. He refers to

  725. Joel chapter 2

    Joel 2 chapter mention

  726. and he says

  727. this thing

  728. that you are witnessing

  729. today

  730. this is the fulfillment

  731. of the Scripture

  732. the outpouring

  733. of the Holy Spirit

  734. so that even

  735. in one situation

  736. or in part

  737. of that context

  738. is even your sons

  739. and daughters

  740. are prophesying.

  741. this was an essential

  742. means

  743. of the Holy Spirit

  744. in laying the foundation

  745. of the church

  746. and perhaps

  747. the best text

  748. for us to understand

  749. and think about

  750. this particular issue

  751. is Ephesians 2

  752. 20

  753. the church

  754. is built

  755. on the foundation

  756. of the apostles

  757. and prophets

  758. Christ Jesus

  759. himself

  760. being the cornerstone

  761. the cornerstone

  762. being the gospel

  763. of Jesus

  764. the teaching

  765. and the revelation

  766. of God

  767. through the apostles

  768. and prophets

  769. completing the foundation

  770. on which

  771. the church

  772. is being built

  773. New Testament prophets

  774. functioned

  775. similarly

  776. to Christ's apostles

  777. though their prophecies

  778. were tested

  779. and tried

  780. against the apostolic witness

  781. the Holy Spirit

  782. gifted

  783. and used them

  784. to speak

  785. the infallible

  786. word of God

  787. to the church

  788. before the scriptures

  789. were completed

  790. God used them

  791. to establish

  792. the church

  793. and guide his people

  794. during a unique transition

  795. in redemptive history

  796. and now that

  797. that foundation

  798. of the church

  799. is fully established

  800. through the completion

  801. of the New Testament scriptures

  802. we understand

  803. the office

  804. and function

  805. of the apostles

  806. and prophets

  807. to have passed away

  808. it wouldn't even be correct

  809. I think

  810. to say that the gift

  811. of prophecy

  812. still exists today

  813. but just in a different

  814. form

  815. as if

  816. some would reduce

  817. this gift of prophecy

  818. as active today

  819. but really just reduced

  820. to preaching

  821. but that's not

  822. that

  823. I don't think that's consistent

  824. with what the scripture

  825. is teaching us here

  826. and of course

  827. there are many

  828. that would say

  829. that

  830. would disagree

  831. with me on this

  832. that this gift

  833. is actually

  834. just as operative

  835. today

  836. as it ever was

  837. I think

  838. we're on

  839. firm

  840. footing

  841. when we disagree

  842. with that

  843. to say

  844. that it still

  845. exists today

  846. but only in a different

  847. form

  848. it would

  849. it would lead us

  850. to affirm

  851. a spiritual gift

  852. that is neither

  853. defined

  854. nor warranted

  855. in the scriptures

  856. and I understand

  857. in the disagreement

  858. I want to respectfully

  859. say this

  860. for those of you

  861. who may even have

  862. a disagreement

  863. with my position

  864. on this

  865. that what is being

  866. practiced

  867. and referred to

  868. as the gift of prophecy

  869. in modern traditions

  870. is not the same

  871. as what we read

  872. in the New Testament

  873. it's not the same

  874. in affirming

  875. such things

  876. opens the door

  877. to confusion

  878. and to spiritual

  879. abuse

  880. in the church

  881. I think Tom Schreiner

  882. is helpful on this

  883. some of you have read

  884. his little book

  885. on spiritual gifts

  886. and he's helpful

  887. just in this simple statement

  888. we no longer have

  889. the gifts of

  890. apostleship

  891. and prophecy

  892. the scriptures

  893. constitute

  894. our soul

  895. and final authority

  896. and thus

  897. the role

  898. of the apostles

  899. and prophets

  900. the role that they played

  901. in the foundational

  902. period of the church

  903. is no longer needed

  904. the scriptures

  905. he emphasizes again

  906. are our soul

  907. and final

  908. authority

  909. that presents a problem

  910. doesn't it

  911. what are we supposed

  912. to do with texts

  913. like 1 Thessalonians 5

  914. 19-22

  915. do we just say

  916. well this just

  917. doesn't matter to us

  918. no of course not

  919. does it have any relevance

  920. to us now

  921. yes

  922. indeed it does

  923. though there is

  924. no new

  925. prophetic utterance

  926. for us to anticipate

  927. we have

  928. the apostolic

  929. and prophetic

  930. witness of the Holy Spirit

  931. in the completed canon

  932. of the New Testament

  933. and we must not

  934. despise it

  935. as Peter wrote

  936. we have the

  937. prophetic word

  938. more fully confirmed

  939. in the written word

  940. of God

  941. we're blessed

  942. with something

  943. that the Thessalonian church

  944. did not have

  945. the whole scriptures

  946. and the Bible

  947. we understand

  948. is the primary

  949. and most significant

  950. and powerful means

  951. the Holy Spirit's

  952. work today

  953. it is the sword

  954. of the Spirit

  955. in Galatians 6

  956. it's his instrument

  957. for applying

  958. the work of Christ

  959. to us

  960. in our salvation

  961. in our regeneration

  962. and in our sanctification

  963. we obey this text

  964. and we fan

  965. into flame

  966. the Holy Spirit

  967. by submitting

  968. to the scriptures

  969. his scriptures

  970. as the soul

  971. and final authority

  972. of our faith

  973. and practice

  974. we obey it

  975. by not despising

  976. the preaching

  977. and teaching

  978. of the Bible

  979. in the corporate

  980. gathering of the church

  981. we obey it

  982. by not neglecting

  983. to study

  984. and meditate

  985. prayerfully

  986. on the word of God

  987. in private worship

  988. we obey it

  989. by testing

  990. everything we hear

  991. by the truth

  992. of scripture

  993. holding fast

  994. to what is in line

  995. with it

  996. and rejecting

  997. every form

  998. of evils

  999. and loved ones

  1000. we obey this text

  1001. by refusing

  1002. to confuse

  1003. or even

  1004. potentially

  1005. abuse

  1006. others

  1007. by claiming

  1008. a spiritual gift

  1009. that no longer

  1010. is used

  1011. by God

  1012. when we claim

  1013. to speak

  1014. on behalf

  1015. of God

  1016. the words

  1017. that come out

  1018. of our mouths

  1019. ought only

  1020. to be

  1021. what he has

  1022. given us

  1023. in the Bible

  1024. statements

  1025. like

  1026. the Lord

  1027. told me

  1028. to tell you

  1029. or

  1030. I have

  1031. a fresh

  1032. word

  1033. from God

  1034. for you

  1035. mistake

  1036. our words

  1037. for God's

  1038. and we need

  1039. to tread

  1040. carefully

  1041. here

  1042. it doesn't

  1043. mean

  1044. that we

  1045. can't

  1046. share

  1047. what's

  1048. on our

  1049. hearts

  1050. with one

  1051. another

  1052. it doesn't

  1053. mean

  1054. that we

  1055. can't

  1056. pass

  1057. on a

  1058. form

  1059. of

  1060. counsel

  1061. or encouragement

  1062. that we

  1063. feel impressed

  1064. to give

  1065. but we

  1066. need to

  1067. be careful

  1068. to distinguish

  1069. a way

  1070. that God

  1071. may be

  1072. using

  1073. my words

  1074. for your

  1075. good

  1076. versus

  1077. what God

  1078. has said

  1079. we must

  1080. say

  1081. to someone

  1082. else

  1083. we need

  1084. to be

  1085. careful

  1086. with this

  1087. we don't

  1088. serve people

  1089. well with

  1090. statements

  1091. like that

  1092. we confuse

  1093. them

  1094. we don't

  1095. stand in

  1096. line

  1097. with the

  1098. scriptures

  1099. when we

  1100. make

  1101. statements

  1102. like that

  1103. what we

  1104. ought to

  1105. say

  1106. rather

  1107. better

  1108. way

  1109. to

  1110. serve

  1111. people

  1112. in the

  1113. work

  1114. of the

  1115. spirit

  1116. is

  1117. maybe

  1118. to do

  1119. something

  1120. like this

  1121. why don't

  1122. we look

  1123. at what

  1124. God

  1125. says

  1126. in his

  1127. word

  1128. about

  1129. this

  1130. thing

  1131. in your

  1132. life

  1133. maybe

  1134. we would

  1135. say

  1136. something

  1137. like

  1138. you know

  1139. I've

  1140. heard

  1141. what's

  1142. going

  1143. on

  1144. maybe

  1145. this

  1146. particular

  1147. passage

  1148. will

  1149. bring

  1150. light

  1151. to

  1152. your

  1153. circumstance

  1154. why

  1155. don't

  1156. we

  1157. examine

  1158. God's

  1159. word

  1160. and pray

  1161. and ask

  1162. for the

  1163. spirit

  1164. to give

  1165. us

  1166. wisdom

  1167. in

  1168. how

  1169. to

  1170. apply

  1171. it

  1172. if

  1173. we

  1174. want

  1175. to

  1176. speak

  1177. God's

  1178. words

  1179. we

  1180. need

  1181. to

  1182. actually

  1183. speak

  1184. God's

  1185. word

  1186. and again

  1187. it's not

  1188. that we

  1189. can't help

  1190. one another

  1191. and it's

  1192. not to

  1193. say

  1194. that God

  1195. doesn't

  1196. use his

  1197. people

  1198. to help

  1199. his

  1200. people

  1201. I don't

  1202. believe

  1203. that

  1204. he

  1205. does

  1206. we

  1207. just

  1208. need

  1209. to be

  1210. careful

  1211. to

  1212. distinguish

  1213. between

  1214. a way

  1215. that God

  1216. may be

  1217. using

  1218. me

  1219. to help

  1220. you

  1221. with

  1222. my

  1223. words

  1224. verses

  1225. thus

  1226. saith

  1227. the

  1228. Lord

  1229. thus

  1230. saith

  1231. the

  1232. Lord

  1233. for

  1234. us

  1235. is

  1236. only

  1237. what

  1238. is

  1239. recorded

  1240. for

  1241. us

  1242. in

  1243. the

  1244. scriptures

  1245. now

  1246. what's

  1247. the

  1248. text

  1249. about

  1250. the

  1251. text

  1252. is

  1253. not

  1254. about

  1255. describing

  1256. what

  1257. this

  1258. gift

  1259. is

  1260. perhaps

  1261. there's

  1262. been

  1263. too

  1264. much

  1265. time

  1266. on

  1267. that

  1268. the

  1269. text

  1270. is

  1271. about

  1272. not

  1273. quenching

  1274. the

  1275. work

  1276. of

  1277. the

  1278. spirit

  1279. by

  1280. despising

  1281. his

  1282. ways

  1283. and

  1284. what

  1285. is

  1286. the

  1287. way

  1288. that

  1289. we

  1290. know

  1291. the

  1292. spirit

  1293. is

  1294. actively

  1295. working

  1296. in

  1297. our

  1298. regeneration

  1299. and

  1300. sanctification

  1301. today

  1302. preparing

  1303. us

  1304. for the

  1305. return

  1306. of

  1307. Christ

  1308. he's

  1309. working

  1310. through

  1311. his

  1312. word

  1313. so

  1314. don't

  1315. despise

  1316. it

  1317. be

  1318. present

  1319. when

  1320. it's

  1321. being

  1322. taught

  1323. and

  1324. preached

  1325. in

  1326. the

  1327. church

  1328. let

  1329. it

  1330. be

  1331. the

  1332. thing

  1333. that

  1334. guides

  1335. your

  1336. discipling

  1337. relationships

  1338. with

  1339. one

  1340. another

  1341. as you

  1342. sit at

  1343. coffee

  1344. together

  1345. this

  1346. week

  1347. let

  1348. it

  1349. be

  1350. the

  1351. thing

  1352. that's

  1353. ruling

  1354. over

  1355. your

  1356. home

  1357. let

  1358. it

  1359. be

  1360. the

  1361. thing

  1362. that's

  1363. ruling

  1364. over

  1365. your

  1366. work

  1367. your
