  1. 1 Thessalonians 5, 23 and 24.

  2. Now may the God of peace himself

  3. sanctify you completely.

  4. And may your whole spirit and soul and body

  5. be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  6. He who calls you is faithful.

  7. He will surely do it.

  8. Amen.

  9. I want to open this morning with a question.

  10. If you're a Christian,

  11. do you think when you wake up tomorrow morning,

  12. you'll still be a Christian?

  13. Think about it.

  14. Meditate on that for just a second.

  15. If you're a Christian today,

  16. do you think that tomorrow you still will be?

  17. Now I don't want to make too many assumptions in that question.

  18. I recognize that not everyone here may be a Christian.

  19. I suspect that most of you at least understand yourselves to be.

  20. Why do you believe you will be one tomorrow?

  21. Why do you expect that despite significant doubts,

  22. that I would imagine at least some of you probably wrestle with,

  23. I wonder why you would expect that with significant doubts that you'll still believe tomorrow.

  24. Why do you suppose that the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of sin will not choke out your desire to believe and obey Christ?

  25. And the truth is maybe you don't have much confidence about that.

  26. You're just trying to hang on as tightly as you can.

  27. And I have been there certain points in my life and in my faith

  28. where I didn't know if the next day I actually would wake up and still believe or still want this.

  29. You're just trying to hang on as tightly as I can.

  30. And maybe you're at a place now or maybe you at least can relate to something like that.

  31. There's been a time in your life where you just thought,

  32. I'm just trying to hang on and hope for the best and hope that I can still hang on tomorrow.

  33. But I suspect that if you think yourself a Christian now,

  34. you'll probably go to sleep tonight expecting to wake up tomorrow still being one.

  35. But the question is, why do you think that?

  36. Why would that even happen when there seems to be so much that's working against us?

  37. So much working against us even maybe that's within us?

  38. We even think about Galatians 5 that we just read a moment ago.

  39. We're at war all the time?

  40. Essentially is what Paul is saying there.

  41. There's really only one true answer to the question.

  42. There's only one reason why you'll wake up tomorrow and still be a Christian.

  43. It's not because you have the willpower to keep going when others fall away.

  44. Remember that's what Peter said?

  45. Then Jesus, right before he goes to the Garden of Gethsemane,

  46. he tells the disciples, he says, you're all going to forsake me.

  47. And Peter says, no, Lord.

  48. And he acknowledges the other 11.

  49. He says, those guys may do it.

  50. I'll never do it.

  51. He thought he had the willpower.

  52. He thought that he had all that it took to persevere in and of himself.

  53. And Jesus says, no, actually, you're going to deny me three times before even the alarm clock goes off tomorrow.

  54. Three times.

  55. And, of course, we read our Bibles.

  56. We know that's exactly what happened, isn't it?

  57. It won't be because you've got the willpower to just make it through when other people fall away.

  58. It won't be because you've personally reached a point of no return.

  59. It won't be because you're so spiritually mature that you're so in love with Jesus that you're beyond any temptation to turn back from him.

  60. It won't be for any of those reasons.

  61. If you're a Christian, there's only one reason you'll still be one tomorrow.

  62. And it's because God is faithful to keep you to the very end.

  63. Jesus said it plainly in John 6.

  64. That's actually his mission.

  65. This is the will of him who sent me, Jesus said.

  66. That I should lose nothing of all he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.

  67. For this is the will of my Father, Jesus said.

  68. That everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him, that they should have eternal life.

  69. And I will raise him up on the last day.

  70. That's Jesus' mission.

  71. Sent here by the Father to secure salvation for his people.

  72. And he will lose none of them.

  73. But like us, the Thessalonians, if we've studied this letter, they had all kinds of struggles that could have resulted in abandoning the faith.

  74. In fact, there's even a time in the letter, you'll remember back in chapters 2 and 3,

  75. where Paul was concerned that maybe the persecution and the cares of this world they were facing

  76. might have caused them to abandon the faith that they had once professed.

  77. So he sent Timothy, remember, Timothy sent to check on them and secure the gospel witness in the church.

  78. You remember.

  79. Some of them had doubts about the return of Christ, which caused incredible grief and confusion.

  80. Some of them battled with the attractiveness of serious sins that might have easily consumed them.

  81. We read about that in chapter 4.

  82. The cares of this life, the persecution of the Jews and their neighbors

  83. had the potential of shipwrecking a faith that they had at least professed to have.

  84. And yet, despite all of those things, when we get to chapter 5 and we understand the letter as a whole,

  85. they continued to endure.

  86. They were even growing.

  87. They were gaining maturity.

  88. They were gaining faithfulness.

  89. Yeah, they had some sins, but they were progressing through it.

  90. Why?

  91. How?

  92. Paul was convinced that God would secure and sanctify them until Christ's return.

  93. A magnificent, glorious, encouraging truth that he underscores here at the end of the letter.

  94. And it's through this amazing benediction here at the end that I want to just present you once again

  95. with the faithful God who promises to preserve and to purify his people to the very end.

  96. First, I want you to see a prayer of blessing.

  97. A prayer of blessing.

  98. Look with me at verse 23.

  99. Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely

  100. and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless

  101. at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  102. This is the last of two major benedictions in the letter.

  103. The first one was in chapter 3, if you just look at it.

  104. Chapter 3, verses 11 to 13.

  105. There's similarities between the two.

  106. Now may our God and Father himself, our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you.

  107. May the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all as we do for you,

  108. so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father

  109. at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.

  110. That sounds very similar to this last one, isn't it?

  111. In the first one, Paul prays for God to establish their hearts blameless in holiness at the coming of the Lord.

  112. And that blessing, it closed a section that was focused on the Thessalonians' persevering faith.

  113. So using similar language here in the second and final benediction in the letter,

  114. Paul prays for their progress in sanctification,

  115. their progress in holy living.

  116. And again, the prayer is for God to purify and to preserve his people until Christ returns.

  117. And it's a fitting conclusion to this section.

  118. But it's also, I think, the climax of the whole letter.

  119. Everything beginning at chapter 1 all the way to this point,

  120. everything has been pushing forward to this idea here at the end.

  121. It contains the final note of certainty that Jesus will return,

  122. which now we can understand to be by far the most prominent theme of the whole letter.

  123. Jesus is coming back.

  124. He's coming back soon.

  125. They were living as if it could be any moment.

  126. As should we.

  127. Listen, all of creation, it is headed toward the climactic moment of Jesus' coming

  128. when he will complete his saving work in his people

  129. and he will bring final judgment on everyone else.

  130. And the issue of preparedness for that moment comes to the surface again here.

  131. And we have to ask, are you ready?

  132. He could come today.

  133. Are you ready?

  134. Are you prepared?

  135. Will he find you believing and pursuing holiness as a result of that faith?

  136. Or will you be judged with the unbelieving who pursue self and sin instead?

  137. Now, Paul's prayer for the Thessalonian Christians was that God would, quote,

  138. sanctify them completely.

  139. Sanctify them completely.

  140. Now, we understand that God will complete this work in us when Christ returns.

  141. But Paul is primarily concerned here with their present sanctification,

  142. not their future glorification.

  143. Now, I'm not going to go into all the differences there.

  144. We understand that's the implication of the text, right?

  145. It is all indeed moving to the end at which time God will glorify his saints.

  146. That is, he will free us entirely from sin and death and disease

  147. and all the things that are promised for us in Revelation 21.

  148. That's coming.

  149. I don't think that's what Paul has primarily in mind here.

  150. I think he's praying specifically for the Thessalonians presently in that moment,

  151. in this life, their sanctification.

  152. We should understand completely here in verse 23 in the sense of thorough, of whole.

  153. We might read it,

  154. Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you thoroughly.

  155. May he sanctify you wholly, entirely.

  156. And this becomes even more evident when we get to the second part of the prayer

  157. when Paul refers to spirit, soul, and body.

  158. What's he mean?

  159. What's he saying?

  160. He's praying that until Jesus returns,

  161. their whole being, everything about them,

  162. what they do, how they think,

  163. the nature of their worship,

  164. both in private and in public and in corporate worship,

  165. that all of those things,

  166. that God would make them and keep them blameless.

  167. In other words,

  168. he asked God to make these Christians

  169. thoroughly faithful,

  170. mature,

  171. and holy people

  172. prepared for the Lord's coming.

  173. Listen, holiness of spirit, soul, and body,

  174. of our whole being,

  175. it must be

  176. your earnest desire.

  177. And if you're a Christian,

  178. it will be

  179. your earnest

  180. desire.

  181. We don't understand Paul here to mean

  182. perfect

  183. when he says blameless.

  184. In other places,

  185. in the New Testament,

  186. he says that,

  187. for example,

  188. you're to have elders and pastors

  189. in your church

  190. that are above reproach

  191. and that are

  192. blameless.

  193. He says in another place

  194. to one of the other churches,

  195. referring to himself,

  196. that in his preaching

  197. and in his living before the churches,

  198. he himself was

  199. blameless.

  200. And yet,

  201. we go to a place like

  202. Philippians chapter 3

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  203. or Romans chapter 7,

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  204. and we find that Paul

  205. at no point

  206. considered himself

  207. to have reached a state

  208. of perfection

  209. or sinlessness.

  210. He understands that

  211. all of us

  212. are awaiting that

  213. at the return of Christ.

  214. So when he says blameless here,

  215. he's not speaking of

  216. a kind of perfection

  217. or a sinlessness.

  218. He's just speaking of holiness,

  219. a characterization

  220. of thorough righteousness

  221. in our whole being.

  222. And if you're a Christian,

  223. part of the work

  224. that God does in you

  225. is he sets this

  226. as your desire.

  227. You want to please him,

  228. you want to love him,

  229. and you want to live

  230. in a way that is worthy

  231. of the call

  232. that he's put on your life.

  233. John makes it plain for us

  234. in 1 John chapter 2

    1 John 2:3–5

  235. verses 3 through 5.

  236. He writes,

  237. and by this we know

  238. that we have come to know him.

  239. We are made certain of

  240. and assured of

  241. our salvation

  242. if we keep his commandments.

  243. Whoever says,

  244. I know him,

  245. but does not keep his commandments,

  246. John says,

  247. is a liar.

  248. The truth is not in him,

  249. but whoever keeps his word

  250. in him,

  251. truly the love of God

  252. is perfected.

  253. It is brought to maturity.

  254. It is completed.

  255. It is made whole.

  256. Sounds a lot like

  257. what Paul is saying

  258. in 1 Thessalonians 5.

  259. By this we may know

  260. that we are in him.

  261. Whoever says he abides in him

  262. ought to walk in the same way

  263. in which he walked.

  264. But back in 1 Thessalonians 5,

  265. I want you to notice

  266. in verse 23,

  267. in Paul's prayer,

  268. who is doing the sanctifying

  269. and keeping?

  270. Those are the verbs.

  271. Sanctify,

  272. be kept,

  273. but who's the subject?

  274. It's the God of peace himself

  275. that is the subject.

  276. Must we willfully pursue holiness?

  277. Yes.

  278. But our sanctification,

  279. like every other facet

  280. of our salvation,

  281. is ultimately

  282. the work of God's grace.

  283. Our sanctification

  284. flows out of

  285. our justification.

  286. That is,

  287. when God saves us,

  288. he sets us

  289. on this divine,

  290. gracious path

  291. of pursuing purity

  292. and holiness.

  293. It is his work of grace.

  294. He is the acting agent here.

  295. There's no other way

  296. to understand

  297. what Paul's saying.

  298. He asks God

  299. to sanctify them.

  300. He asks God

  301. to keep them.

  302. Why?

  303. Not because he wants

  304. to let them off the hook.

  305. No, because he understands

  306. that fundamentally,

  307. this is a work of grace.

  308. God does this work in us.

  309. This is the testimony

  310. of the scripture.

  311. Ephesians 2 and verse 10,

  312. we read it a moment ago.

  313. For we are his workmanship.

  314. Do you remember the song?

  315. Maybe you sung it as a kid.

  316. He's still working on me

  317. to make me what I ought to be.

  318. It took him just a day

  319. to make the moon and the stars,

  320. the sun and the earth,

  321. Jupiter and Mars.

  322. How loving and faithful

  323. he must be

  324. to still be working on me.

  325. We sing that as kids, right?

  326. Is that not what Paul means?

  327. We are his workmanship.

  328. We're his project.

  329. Created

  330. in Christ Jesus.

  331. That's a reference

  332. to our conversion.

  333. You don't create yourself.

  334. That's a work of grace.

  335. Created in Christ Jesus

  336. for

  337. good works,

  338. holiness,

  339. righteousness,

  340. blamelessness,

  341. which God prepared beforehand

  342. that we should walk in them.

  343. 2 Corinthians 3 and verse 18,

  344. and we all

  345. with unveiled face

  346. beholding the glory

  347. of the Lord,

  348. we are being transformed

  349. into the same image.

  350. That is the image of Christ.

  351. We are being transformed

  352. into the same image

  353. from one degree of glory

  354. to another.

  355. What is he saying?

  356. He's saying this is

  357. a progressive work

  358. of grace

  359. that God is doing

  360. in our lives.

  361. He is transforming us.

  362. We might say

  363. in relationship

  364. to our justification

  365. that we have been saved,

  366. but when we think

  367. about our sanctification,

  368. we would change that.

  369. We would say

  370. we are being saved.

  371. Our justification

  372. guarantees

  373. our sanctification

  374. that we are being saved,

  375. which will result

  376. in our glorification

  377. that one day

  378. we will say

  379. we will be saved

  380. at the coming of the Lord.

  381. finally,

  382. it's complete,

  383. it's done.

  384. What is he saying

  385. in 2 Corinthians 3.18?

  386. That right now

  387. we're being transformed.

  388. We are being saved.

  389. We are being transformed

  390. to the image of Christ

  391. from one degree

  392. of glory

  393. to another.

  394. We're making progress.

  395. And then he says

  396. this comes

  397. from the Lord

  398. who is

  399. the Spirit,

  400. the Spirit of God

  401. working in the people

  402. of God

  403. to conform them

  404. to the image

  405. of the Son of God

  406. all for the glory

  407. of God.

  408. Now how does God

  409. accomplish this work?

  410. He sanctifies us

  411. not by anything extravagant.

  412. last weekend

  413. I got to spend

  414. an extended weekend

  415. four or five days

  416. with a group

  417. of other pastors

  418. at Capitol Hill Baptist Church

  419. in Washington, D.C.

  420. in the opening session

  421. Jonathan Lehman

  422. some of you

  423. have been reading

  424. his books

  425. Jonathan Lehman

  426. he said

  427. I want to just

  428. make clear here

  429. what you're going to see

  430. this weekend

  431. and what you're not going to see.

  432. He said

  433. you will not see

  434. this weekend

  435. anything extraordinary.

  436. He said

  437. all you're going to see

  438. this weekend

  439. is an ordinary church

  440. led by ordinary elders

  441. according to the ordinary

  442. means of grace

  443. because that's the way

  444. that the Lord does

  445. his extraordinary work.

  446. You know how

  447. he's going to sanctify you?

  448. It won't be through

  449. anything extraordinary.

  450. He may use

  451. some unusual circumstances

  452. from time to time

  453. but his sanctifying work

  454. by and large

  455. it won't be through

  456. anything extraordinary.

  457. You know what it's going to be through?

  458. An ordinary church

  459. with an ordinary pastor

  460. with ordinary Christians

  461. who love each other

  462. are committed to one another

  463. who are committed

  464. to the ordinary means of grace

  465. the scriptures

  466. prayer

  467. worship

  468. the ordinances

  469. discipleship

  470. that's how he does it.

  471. That's how he does it.

  472. Now if you're not

  473. growing in holiness

  474. if you're not

  475. progressing in sanctification

  476. determination

  477. you know what I mean

  478. it's not wise

  479. to take a small sample

  480. of your life

  481. and try to make

  482. that determination.

  483. It's like baseball

  484. is about to start

  485. we're finishing up

  486. spring training.

  487. One of the phrases

  488. you'll hear over and over

  489. if you care anything

  490. about baseball right now

  491. is this is a small sample size

  492. we have no idea

  493. if this is indicative

  494. of what the season

  495. is going to be like

  496. right?

  497. If you try to evaluate

  498. your Christian life

  499. by taking a small sample size

  500. just a couple weeks

  501. or a couple months

  502. it's probably not going

  503. to be very useful to you.

  504. we're looking at

  505. the trajectory

  506. of our lives right?

  507. You look at

  508. the trajectory

  509. of your life

  510. an extended amount

  511. of time

  512. and you say

  513. yeah there's not really

  514. a lot of progress

  515. happening there

  516. in a spiritual sense.

  517. There's only two

  518. explanations for that.

  519. The first one

  520. is that you're just

  521. not a Christian.

  522. Our justification

  523. guarantees our

  524. sanctification

  525. in some form.

  526. Now God does his work

  527. differently in everybody.

  528. We're all

  529. at different places.

  530. We're all

  531. working according

  532. to God's working

  533. in our lives right?

  534. We understand that.

  535. When you look

  536. at the trajectory

  537. of your Christian life

  538. and there's no

  539. real sanctifying work

  540. sanctifying progress

  541. happening it could

  542. just be you're

  543. just not a Christian.

  544. You've never really

  545. been born again

  546. by the Spirit of God.

  547. Maybe you've made

  548. some religious

  549. affirmations.

  550. affirmations.

  551. Maybe you have

  552. identified in some

  553. way with Christianity

  554. but Jesus is neither

  555. your Savior

  556. nor is he your Lord

  557. in any genuine

  558. sense of that.

  559. The other explanation

  560. is that you are

  561. a Christian

  562. who has neglected

  563. the ordinary means

  564. of grace.

  565. If that's the way

  566. that God works

  567. and you have

  568. neglected

  569. those means

  570. why would you

  571. ever expect

  572. to notice

  573. any significant

  574. work being done

  575. in your life?

  576. Maybe you've

  577. stopped praying

  578. and meditating

  579. on God's word

  580. in any real

  581. meaningful way.

  582. Yeah you bless

  583. your food

  584. but come on.

  585. I mean real

  586. prayer.

  587. Real communion

  588. with God.

  589. Yeah you bring

  590. your Bible

  591. to church.

  592. Or actually

  593. meditating

  594. in the scriptures.

  595. Opening yourselves

  596. to them day

  597. by day

  598. week by week.

  599. Perhaps you've

  600. neglected

  601. to regularly

  602. gather

  603. or at least

  604. meaningfully

  605. engage

  606. in the gatherings

  607. of the church

  608. for worship.

  609. Maybe it's that

  610. your relationships

  611. with other Christians

  612. are either

  613. non-existent

  614. or there's

  615. really no

  616. difference

  617. in their

  618. nature

  619. between

  620. your

  621. relationship

  622. with other

  623. Christians

  624. and your

  625. relationships

  626. with non-Christians.

  627. How can you

  628. expect God

  629. to do a

  630. thorough

  631. work

  632. in your

  633. life

  634. when you

  635. do not

  636. avail yourself

  637. to his

  638. means?

  639. So Paul's

  640. prayer of

  641. blessing

  642. is that God

  643. will thoroughly

  644. sanctify the

  645. Thessalonians

  646. in preparation

  647. in preparation

  648. for Christ's

  649. return.

  650. And we

  651. should also

  652. pray this

  653. for one

  654. another.

  655. And we

  656. should pursue

  657. that work

  658. through the

  659. ordinary means

  660. of grace.

  661. So we have

  662. a prayer of

  663. blessing.

  664. Second,

  665. we have a

  666. promise of

  667. blessing.

  668. A promise

  669. of blessing.

  670. Look with me

  671. again at

  672. verse 24.

  673. Paul's

  674. prayer and

  675. encouragement

  676. is all

  677. anchored

  678. here.

  679. It's all

  680. anchored

  681. here.

  682. Many of

  683. our prayers

  684. do not

  685. come with

  686. any certainty.

  687. We can

  688. ask of

  689. God,

  690. we trust

  691. in God,

  692. but we

  693. also trust

  694. that God

  695. will do

  696. his work

  697. his way

  698. in our

  699. lives.

  700. There's

  701. some prayers

  702. we pray.

  703. We don't

  704. know how

  705. God's

  706. going to

  707. work.

  708. We just

  709. entrust

  710. those things

  711. to him.

  712. But there

  713. are some

  714. prayers we

  715. can be

  716. absolutely

  717. certain God

  718. will answer

  719. and this

  720. is one

  721. of them.

  722. The basic

  723. framework of

  724. the promise

  725. is simple.

  726. He is

  727. faithful.

  728. He will

  729. do it.

  730. He is

  731. faithful.

  732. He will

  733. do it.

  734. Who is

  735. he?

  736. The God

  737. of peace.

  738. What is

  739. it that

  740. he's

  741. doing?

  742. Or

  743. that he

  744. promises

  745. to do?

  746. Sanctify

  747. you

  748. completely.

  749. Keep

  750. you

  751. blameless.

  752. The promise

  753. is significant.

  754. God

  755. will

  756. complete

  757. his

  758. saving

  759. work.

  760. Again

  761. and again

  762. the scriptures

  763. testify to

  764. this.

  765. We know

  766. it commonly

  767. from

  768. Philippians

  769. 1.6.

  770. I am

  771. persuaded

  772. that he

  773. who has

  774. begun

  775. a good

  776. work

  777. in you

  778. will

  779. bring

  780. it

  781. to

  782. completion

  783. at the

  784. day

  785. of

  786. Jesus

  787. Christ.

  788. Even

  789. more,

  790. the promise

  791. is predicated

  792. not simply

  793. on God's

  794. power

  795. but

  796. particularly

  797. on God's

  798. character.

  799. Do you

  800. see it?

  801. Look at the

  802. verse.

  803. He is

  804. powerful.

  805. faithful.

  806. He will

  807. do it.

  808. That's not

  809. what Paul

  810. says.

  811. He is

  812. faithful.

  813. He will

  814. do it.

  815. The fact

  816. that God

  817. can save

  818. us

  819. comes with

  820. no special

  821. guarantee

  822. that he

  823. will.

  824. However,

  825. his

  826. perfect

  827. faithfulness

  828. means his

  829. people have

  830. no reason

  831. to doubt

  832. the promise

  833. or fear

  834. Christ's

  835. judgment.

  836. So Paul

  837. adds a

  838. modifier

  839. to express

  840. the certainty

  841. that should

  842. comfort us.

  843. He doesn't

  844. just say

  845. he will

  846. do it.

  847. He says

  848. he will

  849. surely

  850. do it.

  851. It's

  852. certain.

  853. Our

  854. final

  855. salvation,

  856. our

  857. progress

  858. until that

  859. time

  860. is 100%

  861. guaranteed

  862. by God's

  863. perfect

  864. record

  865. of

  866. faithfulness.

  867. He's

  868. never

  869. broken

  870. a promise.

  871. He has

  872. fulfilled

  873. them all.

  874. He will

  875. fulfill

  876. this one.

  877. Paul

  878. says,

  879. trust him

  880. Thessalonians.

  881. Trust him

  882. Cornelius.

  883. Trust him

  884. Christians.

  885. He's

  886. faithful.

  887. He'll

  888. do it.

  889. But there's

  890. another

  891. modifier

  892. here we have

  893. to take

  894. into account.

  895. God is

  896. perfectly

  897. faithful to

  898. fulfill his

  899. promise.

  900. But who

  901. is the

  902. promise for?

  903. Who can

  904. claim the

  905. promise?

  906. It is for

  907. those,

  908. Paul says,

  909. whom

  910. God

  911. calls.

  912. He

  913. who calls

  914. you

  915. is faithful.

  916. He will

  917. surely

  918. do it

  919. for you.

  920. This language

  921. of calling

  922. has been

  923. used two

  924. other times

  925. in the

  926. letter.

  927. Just set

  928. your eyes

  929. on it.

  930. Chapter 2,

  931. verse 12.

  932. 12.

  933. We exhorted

  934. each one

  935. of you

  936. and encouraged

  937. you and

  938. charged you

  939. to walk

  940. in a manner

  941. worthy of

  942. God who

  943. calls you

  944. into his

  945. own kingdom

  946. and glory.

  947. Calls you

  948. to

  949. salvation.

  950. The second

  951. time it's

  952. used is in

  953. chapter 4

  954. and verse

  955. 7.

  956. God has

  957. not called

  958. us for

  959. impurity

  960. but in

  961. holiness.

  962. So he

  963. calls us

  964. to live

  965. in

  966. holiness.

  967. So this

  968. calling

  969. language,

  970. it refers

  971. to God's

  972. sovereign

  973. call to

  974. salvation

  975. and the

  976. subsequent

  977. sanctification

  978. that comes

  979. along with

  980. it.

  981. He calls

  982. us to

  983. believe,

  984. calls us

  985. into his

  986. kingdom

  987. and glory

  988. and those

  989. whom he

  990. calls into

  991. his kingdom

  992. and glory

  993. he calls

  994. to live

  995. in holiness.

  996. So the

  997. promise is

  998. for those

  999. whom God

  1000. calls to

  1001. salvation

  1002. and the

  1003. encouragement

  1004. is that he

  1005. will be

  1006. faithful to

  1007. keep

  1008. those he

  1009. calls

  1010. until the

  1011. day of

  1012. Christ.

  1013. To the

  1014. very end

  1015. he will

  1016. keep them.

  1017. God

  1018. will

  1019. be

  1020. useful.

  1021. How

  1022. exactly

  1023. are we

  1024. to

  1025. understand

  1026. this

  1027. call

  1028. to

  1029. salvation?

  1030. The

  1031. Bible

  1032. speaks of

  1033. it in

  1034. at least

  1035. two

  1036. ways.

  1037. I

  1038. think

  1039. really

  1040. only

  1041. two

  1042. ways.

  1043. First

  1044. we

  1045. understand

  1046. there

  1047. is

  1048. the

  1049. general

  1050. call

  1051. of

  1052. salvation.

  1053. The

  1054. general

  1055. call.

  1056. Sometimes

  1057. the

  1058. scriptures

  1059. speak of

  1060. God's

  1061. call

  1062. as a

  1063. command

  1064. for

  1065. all

  1066. people

  1067. to

  1068. love

  1069. worship

  1070. and

  1071. obey

  1072. him.

  1073. He

  1074. calls

  1075. all

  1076. people

  1077. everywhere

  1078. to

  1079. repent.

  1080. That's

  1081. Acts 17

  1082. 30 and

  1083. 31.

  1084. He

  1085. calls

  1086. all

  1087. people

  1088. everywhere

  1089. to

  1090. praise

  1091. him.

  1092. Psalm

  1093. 67.

  1094. Let

  1095. the

  1096. peoples

  1097. praise

  1098. you

  1099. oh

  1100. God.

  1101. Let

  1102. all

  1103. the

  1104. peoples

  1105. praise

  1106. you.

  1107. The

  1108. psalmist

  1109. says.

  1110. Not

  1111. just the

  1112. Jews.

  1113. All

  1114. the

  1115. peoples.

  1116. They're

  1117. all

  1118. called

  1119. to

  1120. praise.

  1121. He

  1122. calls

  1123. on us

  1124. to

  1125. trust

  1126. Jesus

  1127. by

  1128. faith.

  1129. All

  1130. people.

  1131. That's

  1132. Romans

  1133. 10

  1134. 13.

  1135. Whosoever

  1136. will

  1137. call

  1138. upon

  1139. the

  1140. name

  1141. of

  1142. the

  1143. Lord

  1144. shall

  1145. be

  1146. saved.

  1147. It's

  1148. the

  1149. general

  1150. call

  1151. of

  1152. salvation.

  1153. It is

  1154. implicit

  1155. in the

  1156. great

  1157. commission.

  1158. Christians

  1159. are to

  1160. preach

  1161. the

  1162. gospel

  1163. to

  1164. all

  1165. people

  1166. regardless

  1167. of

  1168. whether

  1169. or not

  1170. we

  1171. think

  1172. or

  1173. know

  1174. that

  1175. they

  1176. will

  1177. hear

  1178. it

  1179. and

  1180. believe

  1181. it.

  1182. Implicit

  1183. in the

  1184. commission

  1185. is the

  1186. general

  1187. call.

  1188. God

  1189. calls

  1190. all

  1191. people

  1192. everywhere

  1193. to

  1194. repent

  1195. and

  1196. praise

  1197. and

  1198. trust

  1199. in

  1200. Christ.

  1201. It's

  1202. the

  1203. general

  1204. call.

  1205. But

  1206. it's

  1207. not

  1208. the

  1209. only

  1210. way

  1211. that

  1212. the

  1213. Bible

  1214. speaks

  1215. of

  1216. God's

  1217. call.

  1218. There's

  1219. also

  1220. what we

  1221. call

  1222. the

  1223. effectual

  1224. call.

  1225. The

  1226. effectual

  1227. call

  1228. or the

  1229. effective

  1230. call.

  1231. So that

  1232. the

  1233. scriptures

  1234. also

  1235. speak of

  1236. God's

  1237. call to

  1238. salvation

  1239. as a

  1240. mighty

  1241. work

  1242. of the

  1243. Holy

  1244. Spirit

  1245. that

  1246. awakens

  1247. a dead

  1248. heart

  1249. affecting

  1250. the

  1251. sinner's

  1252. response

  1253. to

  1254. the

  1255. general

  1256. call

  1257. of

  1258. the

  1259. gospel.

  1260. We

  1261. see it

  1262. in

  1263. John

  1264. 3,

  1265. John

  1266. 6,

  1267. 2

  1268. Corinthians

  1269. 4,

  1270. Ephesians

  1271. 2,

  1272. over and

  1273. over.

  1274. We see

  1275. there is

  1276. another

  1277. way

  1278. that the

  1279. apostles

  1280. were speaking

  1281. of the

  1282. call of

  1283. God

  1284. and they

  1285. didn't

  1286. understand

  1287. that to

  1288. be the

  1289. general

  1290. call

  1291. that God

  1292. issues to

  1293. all people

  1294. to repent

  1295. and praise

  1296. and have

  1297. faith.

  1298. They're

  1299. speaking of

  1300. a specific

  1301. call like

  1302. in 1

    1 Thessalonians 2 chapter mention

  1303. Thessalonians

  1304. chapter 2

  1305. and verse

  1306. 13 that

  1307. we read

  1308. a moment

  1309. ago.

  1310. He has

  1311. called you

  1312. into his

  1313. glory.

  1314. That is

  1315. an effective

  1316. call.

  1317. It is a

  1318. call that

  1319. has actually

  1320. accomplished

  1321. something.

  1322. So that

  1323. while God

  1324. calls everyone

  1325. everywhere to

  1326. repent and

  1327. believe,

  1328. his call

  1329. comes to

  1330. some with

  1331. divine

  1332. effectiveness

  1333. leading to

  1334. their genuine

  1335. conversion

  1336. to Christ.

  1337. Now I

  1338. just want

  1339. to show

  1340. you one

  1341. passage and

  1342. then you

  1343. can study

  1344. this out

  1345. on your

  1346. own.

  1347. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1:22–24

  1348. chapter 1

  1349. verses 22

  1350. to 24.

  1351. It's on the

  1352. screen or you

  1353. can turn there.

  1354. It's up to

  1355. you.

  1356. 1 Corinthians

  1357. 1, 22

  1358. to 24.

  1359. Paul says,

  1360. for Jews

  1361. demand

  1362. signs,

  1363. Greeks

  1364. seek wisdom

  1365. but we

  1366. preach

  1367. Christ

  1368. crucified

  1369. which is

  1370. a stumbling

  1371. block

  1372. to the

  1373. Jews

  1374. and

  1375. folly

  1376. to the

  1377. Gentiles.

  1378. He's speaking

  1379. categorically

  1380. that the

  1381. gospel is

  1382. being preached,

  1383. the call

  1384. of God

  1385. is being

  1386. issued

  1387. generally

  1388. to all

  1389. people,

  1390. Jew

  1391. and Gentile,

  1392. Jew

  1393. and Greek.

  1394. That's just a

  1395. way of saying

  1396. everybody.

  1397. And Paul

  1398. says as

  1399. that general

  1400. call goes

  1401. out,

  1402. the Jews

  1403. think of it

  1404. as a

  1405. stumbling

  1406. block,

  1407. the Gentiles

  1408. think of it

  1409. as foolishness

  1410. but then

  1411. there's this

  1412. other category.

  1413. He says

  1414. but to

  1415. those

  1416. who are

  1417. called.

  1418. Well I

  1419. thought everybody

  1420. was called

  1421. in the first

  1422. part of the

  1423. verse.

  1424. Yes they

  1425. are in the

  1426. general sense.

  1427. The general

  1428. call is going

  1429. out to all

  1430. of them but

  1431. then he uses

  1432. calling here

  1433. in a different

  1434. way.

  1435. This is a

  1436. different category

  1437. but to

  1438. those who

  1439. are called

  1440. whether they're

  1441. Jew or Greek

  1442. doesn't matter.

  1443. Those who

  1444. are called

  1445. Christ and

  1446. Christ crucified

  1447. then to

  1448. them is

  1449. seen as

  1450. the power

  1451. of God

  1452. and the

  1453. wisdom of

  1454. God.

  1455. What is

  1456. that?

  1457. It's the

  1458. call of

  1459. God.

  1460. Both the

  1461. general call

  1462. and the

  1463. effectual call

  1464. represented in

  1465. one passage.

  1466. The general

  1467. call goes out

  1468. to all people

  1469. but there is

  1470. this thing

  1471. that God

  1472. does,

  1473. this work

  1474. of grace

  1475. that God

  1476. does when

  1477. his gospel

  1478. goes out

  1479. that he

  1480. transforms

  1481. people.

  1482. His call

  1483. is effective.

  1484. The Old

  1485. Testament

  1486. is said

  1487. this way,

  1488. the word

  1489. of God

  1490. goes out

  1491. and it

  1492. never returns

  1493. to him

  1494. void.

  1495. It always

  1496. accomplishes

  1497. the purposes

  1498. that he

  1499. intends for

  1500. it.

  1501. To be

  1502. clear,

  1503. God does

  1504. not force

  1505. anyone

  1506. to receive

  1507. him,

  1508. God does

  1509. not force

  1510. anyone

  1511. to reject

  1512. him.

  1513. One's

  1514. rebellion

  1515. against God

  1516. and rejection

  1517. of the

  1518. gospel is

  1519. truly their

  1520. willful,

  1521. volitional

  1522. rebellion

  1523. and rejection.

  1524. God does

  1525. not make

  1526. them

  1527. disbelieve.

  1528. The same

  1529. is true

  1530. for those

  1531. who believe.

  1532. Their faith

  1533. and repentance

  1534. are truly

  1535. their own.

  1536. God doesn't

  1537. do the

  1538. believing

  1539. for you.

  1540. He does

  1541. not force

  1542. you to

  1543. believe.

  1544. So whether

  1545. you believe

  1546. or not,

  1547. it is truly

  1548. an act

  1549. of your

  1550. will.

  1551. But that

  1552. being said,

  1553. our natural

  1554. condition

  1555. is so

  1556. utterly

  1557. sinful

  1558. according to

  1559. the Bible

  1560. that no

  1561. one will

  1562. ever

  1563. turn to

  1564. God

  1565. apart

  1566. from

  1567. his

  1568. divine

  1569. intervention.

  1570. Romans

  1571. 3

  1572. quoting

  1573. a string

  1574. of verses

  1575. in the

  1576. Old

  1577. Testament

  1578. says

  1579. no one

  1580. seeks

  1581. for God

  1582. God.

  1583. No one

  1584. on their

  1585. own

  1586. apart

  1587. from

  1588. God's

  1589. intervention

  1590. actually

  1591. wants

  1592. him.

  1593. They

  1594. all

  1595. hate

  1596. him.

  1597. They

  1598. want

  1599. what

  1600. they

  1601. want.

  1602. We

  1603. want

  1604. what

  1605. we

  1606. want.

  1607. It's

  1608. our

  1609. rebellion.

  1610. And nobody's

  1611. just going to

  1612. wake up one

  1613. day of their

  1614. own volition

  1615. and decide,

  1616. you know

  1617. what,

  1618. I think

  1619. I'm tired

  1620. of serving

  1621. myself.

  1622. I think

  1623. I'll serve

  1624. someone

  1625. else.

  1626. Jesus

  1627. sounds

  1628. pretty

  1629. good.

  1630. Maybe

  1631. I'll

  1632. try

  1633. that.

  1634. It

  1635. doesn't

  1636. work

  1637. like

  1638. that.

  1639. We're

  1640. too

  1641. sinful

  1642. for

  1643. that.

  1644. I just

  1645. don't

  1646. think we

  1647. understand

  1648. the depth

  1649. of our

  1650. own

  1651. depravity.

  1652. It's

  1653. not that

  1654. we all

  1655. do the

  1656. worst

  1657. possible

  1658. sins.

  1659. It's

  1660. that we're

  1661. all

  1662. thoroughly

  1663. corrupt.

  1664. And what

  1665. Paul is

  1666. praying for

  1667. in 1

  1668. Thessalonians

  1669. 5 is

  1670. that God

  1671. would

  1672. reverse

  1673. that.

  1674. That he

  1675. would

  1676. take the

  1677. thorough

  1678. corruption

  1679. that is

  1680. our

  1681. nature

  1682. and our

  1683. flesh

  1684. and that

  1685. he will

  1686. make it

  1687. thoroughly

  1688. holy

  1689. and righteous

  1690. in the

  1691. spirit

  1692. of God

  1693. according

  1694. to the

  1695. nature

  1696. of

  1697. Christ.

  1698. That's

  1699. the

  1700. prayer.

  1701. We are

  1702. not dying

  1703. in sin.

  1704. We're

  1705. dead.

  1706. We're

  1707. not

  1708. drowning

  1709. in sin.

  1710. We're

  1711. drowned.

  1712. We're

  1713. not awaiting

  1714. !

  1715. We're

  1716. not awaiting

  1717. a coming

  1718. condemnation.

  1719. Jesus

  1720. said in

  1721. John 3,

  1722. if you

  1723. do not

  1724. believe,

  1725. you're

  1726. condemned

  1727. already.

  1728. It's

  1729. your

  1730. present

  1731. circumstance.

  1732. Moving

  1733. from

  1734. death

  1735. to

  1736. life

  1737. requires

  1738. a

  1739. miracle

  1740. from

  1741. God

  1742. and that

  1743. is

  1744. precisely

  1745. what

  1746. conversion

  1747. is.

  1748. God

  1749. does

  1750. not

  1751. force

  1752. anyone

  1753. to

  1754. believe

  1755. but

  1756. through

  1757. the

  1758. preaching

  1759. of

  1760. the

  1761. gospel,

  1762. the

  1763. general

  1764. call,

  1765. the

  1766. Holy

  1767. Spirit

  1768. sovereignly

  1769. and

  1770. admittedly

  1771. mysteriously

  1772. works

  1773. a

  1774. miracle

  1775. in the

  1776. hardened

  1777. hearts

  1778. of

  1779. some

  1780. who

  1781. hear.

  1782. That

  1783. is

  1784. the

  1785. effectual

  1786. call

  1787. and

  1788. when

  1789. he

  1790. does

  1791. this

  1792. work

  1793. of

  1794. regeneration

  1795. is the

  1796. word

  1797. we use.

  1798. This

  1799. work

  1800. of

  1801. bringing

  1802. a

  1803. dead

  1804. soul

  1805. to

  1806. life,

  1807. this

  1808. work

  1809. of

  1810. salvation,

  1811. calling

  1812. that

  1813. sinner

  1814. to

  1815. believe,

  1816. it

  1817. is

  1818. effective.

  1819. He

  1820. never

  1821. loses.

  1822. He

  1823. doesn't

  1824. force us

  1825. to

  1826. believe

  1827. but when

  1828. he

  1829. awakens

  1830. your

  1831. heart

  1832. you

  1833. will.

  1834. Paul

  1835. says

  1836. the

  1837. natural

  1838. man

  1839. is

  1840. blind,

  1841. he's

  1842. blinded

  1843. by the

  1844. God

  1845. of

  1846. this

  1847. world

  1848. but when

  1849. God

  1850. shines

  1851. the

  1852. light

  1853. of

  1854. the

  1855. glory

  1856. of

  1857. Christ

  1858. in

  1859. their

  1860. hearts

  1861. it's

  1862. as if

  1863. God

  1864. is

  1865. taking

  1866. the

  1867. blindfold

  1868. and

  1869. he's

  1870. ripped

  1871. it

  1872. off

  1873. of

  1874. our

  1875. faces

  1876. so

  1877. then

  1878. what

  1879. was

  1880. in

  1881. rebellion

  1882. to

  1883. God

  1884. truly

  1885. our

  1886. own

  1887. rebellion

  1888. now

  1889. suddenly

  1890. is

  1891. truly

  1892. our

  1893. own

  1894. faith

  1895. and

  1896. love

  1897. where

  1898. once

  1899. was a

  1900. human

  1901. will

  1902. and

  1903. rebellion

  1904. to

  1905. God

  1906. it

  1907. is

  1908. now

  1909. a

  1910. human

  1911. will

  1912. that

  1913. desires

  1914. to

  1915. love

  1916. and

  1917. obey

  1918. God

  1919. this

  1920. is

  1921. the

  1922. work

  1923. of

  1924. salvation

  1925. and

  1926. it

  1927. is

  1928. all

  1929. of

  1930. grace

  1931. it's

  1932. all

  1933. of

  1934. grace

  1935. this

  1936. promise

  1937. in

  1938. chapter

  1939. 5

  1940. in

  1941. verse

  1942. 24

  1943. this

  1944. promise

  1945. is

  1946. for

  1947. those

  1948. whom

  1949. God

  1950. made

  1951. his

  1952. own

  1953. by

  1954. grace

  1955. before

  1956. the

  1957. foundations

  1958. of

  1959. the

  1960. world

  1961. it

  1962. is

  1963. for

  1964. all

  1965. who

  1966. are

  1967. born

  1968. again

  1969. by

  1970. the

  1971. spirit

  1972. but

  1973. how

  1974. can

  1975. you

  1976. know

  1977. if

  1978. that's

  1979. you

  1980. it

  1981. sounds

  1982. like

  1983. we

  1984. can't

  1985. know

  1986. oh

  1987. but

  1988. you

  1989. can

  1990. if

  1991. you

  1992. have

  1993. turned

  1994. to

  1995. Christ

  1996. it

  1997. is

  1998. because

  1999. God

  2000. has

  2001. graciously

  2002. called

  2003. you

  2004. to

  2005. do

  2006. so

  2007. if

  2008. you

  2009. trust

  2010. in

  2011. Christ

  2012. death

  2013. and

  2014. resurrection

  2015. for

  2016. salvation

  2017. and

  2018. you

  2019. turn

  2020. from

  2021. your

  2022. sin

  2023. and

  2024. from

  2025. your

  2026. own

  2027. selfish

  2028. desires

  2029. to

  2030. follow

  2031. him

  2032. as

  2033. Lord

  2034. and

  2035. to

  2036. submit

  2037. to

  2038. him

  2039. as

  2040. your

  2041. God

  2042. this

  2043. promise

  2044. is

  2045. for

  2046. you

  2047. he

  2048. is

  2049. faithful

  2050. he

  2051. will

  2052. surely

  2053. bring

  2054. your

  2055. salvation

  2056. to

  2057. completion

  2058. and

  2059. he

  2060. will

  2061. surely

  2062. sanctify

  2063. and

  2064. keep

  2065. you

  2066. blameless

  2067. at

  2068. the

  2069. return

  2070. of

  2071. Christ

  2072. you

  2073. don't

  2074. have

  2075. to

  2076. wonder

  2077. about

  2078. your

  2079. future

  2080. you're

  2081. not

  2082. destined

  2083. for

  2084. wrath

  2085. but

  2086. to

  2087. obtain

  2088. salvation

  2089. God

  2090. will

  2091. be

  2092. faithful

  2093. to

  2094. his

  2095. promise

  2096. rejoice

  2097. he

  2098. will

  2099. do

  2100. it

  2101. if

  2102. you're

  2103. in

  2104. Christ

  2105. you

  2106. will

  2107. be

  2108. tomorrow

  2109. why

  2110. because

  2111. he's

  2112. faithful

  2113. it

  2114. won't

  2115. be

  2116. because

  2117. you're

  2118. better

  2119. than

  2120. those

  2121. who

  2122. don't

  2123. believe

  2124. it

  2125. won't

  2126. be

  2127. because

  2128. you've

  2129. done

  2130. enough

  2131. good

  2132. to

  2133. cover

  2134. all

  2135. the

  2136. bad

  2137. if

  2138. that

  2139. were

  2140. even

  2141. possible

  2142. then

  2143. Jesus'

  2144. death

  2145. means

  2146. absolutely

  2147. nothing

  2148. at all

  2149. and we

  2150. need

  2151. to

  2152. stop

  2153. talking

  2154. about

  2155. it

  2156. if

  2157. you

  2158. wake

  2159. up a

  2160. Christian

  2161. tomorrow

  2162. there's

  2163. only one

  2164. reason

  2165. why

  2166. because

  2167. God's

  2168. faithful

  2169. and

  2170. he

  2171. will

  2172. continue

  2173. to

  2174. fulfill

  2175. his

  2176. promise

  2177. to

  2178. all

  2179. he

  2180. calls

  2181. to

  2182. salvation

  2183. it

  2184. won't

  2185. be

  2186. because

  2187. you're

  2188. holding on

  2189. as

  2190. tightly

  2191. as

  2192. you

  2193. can

  2194. to

  2195. Jesus

  2196. though

  2197. you

  2198. need

  2199. to

  2200. do

  2201. that

  2202. but

  2203. that

  2204. won't

  2205. be

  2206. the

  2207. thing

  2208. it's

  2209. because

  2210. he's

  2211. holding

  2212. on

  2213. tightly

  2214. to

  2215. you

  2216. literally

  2217. he

  2218. said

  2219. it

  2220. I

  2221. hold

  2222. them

  2223. in

  2224. the

  2225. palm

  2226. of

  2227. my

  2228. hand

  2229. and

  2230. no

  2231. one

  2232. can

  2233. take

  2234. them

  2235. out

  2236. we

  2237. sing

  2238. it

  2239. all

  2240. the

  2241. time

  2242. no

  2243. power

  2244. of

  2245. hell

  2246. no

  2247. sin

  2248. of

  2249. man

  2250. can

  2251. ever

  2252. pluck

  2253. me

  2254. from

  2255. his

  2256. hand

  2257. till

  2258. he

  2259. returns

  2260. or calls

  2261. me

  2262. home

  2263. here

  2264. in the

  2265. love

  2266. of

  2267. Christ

  2268. I

  2269. stand

  2270. I

  2271. like

  2272. the way

  2273. Andrew

  2274. Peterson

  2275. sings it

  2276. his song

  2277. rest

  2278. easy

  2279. you

  2280. don't

  2281. have

  2282. to

  2283. work

  2284. so

  2285. hard

  2286. you

  2287. can

  2288. rest

  2289. easy

  2290. you

  2291. don't

  2292. have

  2293. to

  2294. prove

  2295. yourself

  2296. you're

  2297. already

  2298. mine

  2299. you

  2300. don't

  2301. have

  2302. to

  2303. hide

  2304. your

  2305. heart

  2306. I

  2307. already

  2308. love

  2309. you

  2310. I

  2311. hold

  2312. it

  2313. in

  2314. mine

  2315. so

  2316. you

  2317. can

  2318. rest

  2319. easy

  2320. if

  2321. you're

  2322. in

  2323. Christ

  2324. loved

  2325. one

  2326. rest

  2327. !

  2328. easy!

  2329. Stop

  2330. trying to

  2331. prove to

  2332. everybody

  2333. that you're

  2334. a great

  2335. Christian

  2336. just be

  2337. a Christian

  2338. and be

  2339. happy to

  2340. be one

  2341. stop

  2342. trying

  2343. after

  2344. saying

  2345. that you're

  2346. trusting

  2347. in

  2348. Christ

  2349. alone

  2350. to

  2351. save

  2352. you

  2353. stop

  2354. trying

  2355. your

  2356. hardest

  2357. and

  2358. doing

  2359. your

  2360. best

  2361. to

  2362. make

  2363. sure

  2364. that

  2365. you

  2366. stay

  2367. safe

  2368. rest

  2369. easy

  2370. in the

  2371. gospel

  2372. of

  2373. grace

  2374. pursue

  2375. holiness

  2376. yes

  2377. you

  2378. don't

  2379. have

  2380. to

  2381. prove

  2382. yourself

  2383. to

  2384. anybody

  2385. you

  2386. don't

  2387. have

  2388. to

  2389. prove

  2390. yourself

  2391. to

  2392. God

  2393. he

  2394. already

  2395. loves

  2396. you

  2397. he's

  2398. called

  2399. you

  2400. so

  2401. rest

  2402. now

  2403. if

  2404. you

  2405. wake

  2406. up

  2407. tomorrow

  2408. and

  2409. you're

  2410. not

  2411. a

  2412. Christian

  2413. you

  2414. don't

  2415. believe

  2416. and

  2417. you're

  2418. not

  2419. interested

  2420. in

  2421. following

  2422. him

  2423. with

  2424. all

  2425. the

  2426. external

  2427. things

  2428. that

  2429. maybe

  2430. you're

  2431. trying

  2432. to

  2433. do

  2434. today

  2435. and

  2436. you

  2437. just

  2438. decide

  2439. I

  2440. don't

  2441. want

  2442. it

  2443. anymore

  2444. I'm

  2445. not

  2446. trying

  2447. to

  2448. do

  2449. that

  2450. anymore

  2451. !

  2452. It

  2453. won't

  2454. be

  2455. because

  2456. God

  2457. has

  2458. forced

  2459. you

  2460. to

  2461. reject

  2462. him

  2463. it

  2464. won't

  2465. be

  2466. because

  2467. God

  2468. has

  2469. prevented

  2470. you

  2471. from

  2472. coming

  2473. to

  2474. him

  2475. it

  2476. will

  2477. be

  2478. because

  2479. you

  2480. have

  2481. willfully

  2482. volitionally

  2483. denied

  2484. him

  2485. and

  2486. his

  2487. truth

  2488. but

  2489. God

  2490. is

  2491. calling

  2492. and

  2493. he's

  2494. calling

  2495. you

  2496. now

  2497. in

  2498. this

  2499. sermon

  2500. with

  2501. this

  2502. text

  2503. now

  2504. repent

  2505. and

  2506. believe

  2507. turn

  2508. trust

  2509. him

  2510. his

  2511. work

  2512. is

  2513. sufficient

  2514. he

  2515. really

  2516. is

  2517. the

  2518. treasure

  2519. in

  2520. the

  2521. field

  2522. he

  2523. really

  2524. is

  2525. the

  2526. pearl

  2527. of

  2528. great

  2529. price

  2530. it

  2531. really

  2532. is

  2533. true

  2534. believe

  2535. turn

  2536. and if

  2537. you

  2538. will

  2539. turn

  2540. to

  2541. Jesus

  2542. this

  2543. promise

  2544. it's

  2545. for you

  2546. it's

  2547. for you

  2548. he's

  2549. faithful

  2550. he will

  2551. do it

  2552. to
