  1. 1 Thessalonians chapter 5, the last four verses.

    1 Thessalonians 5 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. We're reminded again that what we've been studying here is actually a very personal letter between Paul and the Thessalonian congregation.

  4. However, personal correspondence does not necessarily equate to private correspondence, and we know that to be the case in these New Testament letters.

  5. Paul's letters bear the marks of intimacy between friends, between a spiritual family, even with a shortened time that he had with this church.

  6. He sees them, and this letter, again, it bears the marks of closeness and intimacy and love.

  7. And yet, his writings, including 1 Thessalonians, were meant to be publicly read, copied, and then distributed to other congregations.

  8. We even see that intention stated somewhat in verse 27.

  9. The letter circulation is evident in that we still have it today.

  10. And here again, in 2025, in a place very far from Thessalonica, we are reading Paul's letter publicly before the brothers and sisters in Christ,

  11. seeking to understand God's will for us and to be transformed by the working of his word.

  12. And I actually think this is quite amazing for us to think about, just the means by which God has given us his word.

  13. The means by which he inspired and preserved his word for us is, it's amazing, it's kind of beautiful.

  14. God gave us so much of the New Testament in this form, in this letter form.

  15. Through the ordinary means of discipling Christians, helping one another faithfully follow Jesus

  16. as we await Christ's return.

  17. That's how God gives us his word.

  18. That's how he preserves his word for us.

  19. That's the picture here.

  20. Even as we come to just a simple salutation at the end of the letter,

  21. we're just reminded, how has God given us his word?

  22. Well, much of it in the New Testament has just come through the faithfulness of discipling relationships.

  23. Paul and his team seeking to help the Thessalonian Christians be faithful followers of Christ.

  24. And he writes his letter and God inspires the writing and preserves the writing so that today,

  25. we can take it and disciple one another.

  26. Christ's command to make disciples is baked into the very format in which 1 Thessalonians was written.

  27. The letter, as you've seen, it follows the typical apostillary structure of the first century.

  28. It opens with the names of the authors and the recipients.

  29. It follows that up with an offer of thanksgiving for the church.

  30. All of that's common in the letters that we see from the New Testament and other letters from that time.

  31. The primary content, it comes through the main body of the text.

  32. And then a few final words of personal greeting, instruction, and blessing bring it to a close.

  33. Nothing really unusual about that as far as the structure is concerned.

  34. But it's in these few final words that we find our place today.

  35. If you're like me, when you get to places like this in your reading,

  36. you may be tempted to kind of rush through them, right?

  37. To my shame, to be honest with you,

  38. I spoke to Julie earlier in the week.

  39. We were talking about this text.

  40. And I told her, I'm thinking about just moving on to something different in preparation for Easter.

  41. And as you might imagine, the Lord rebuked me for that in my spirit.

  42. Why?

  43. Not all scripture is equally impactful.

  44. But it is all inspired by God and profitable.

  45. If all God intended to use to accomplish his work in us was the most impactful text,

  46. then that's all he would have given us.

  47. But that's not what he has done.

  48. Not every meal you eat in your life will impact you in the same way.

  49. In fact, most of them you'll never even remember.

  50. And yet each one of them sustained you.

  51. Each one of them nourished you.

  52. Each one of them shaped you.

  53. In some cases, literally.

  54. Well, it's the same with God's word.

  55. Yeah, it's a simple greeting at the end.

  56. But it's an inspired greeting.

  57. Yeah, it's basic instruction.

  58. But it's instruction from God.

  59. To my shame, I wanted to skip it.

  60. God has something to say to us here.

  61. And we need to hear him.

  62. You've heard sermons that consist of three points in a poem.

  63. Here in the final words of 1 Thessalonians, we have three instructions and a blessing.

  64. They're simple.

  65. They're straightforward.

  66. But I think what you will find is that they are so very necessary for us as well.

  67. Let me give you the three instructions and then we'll wrap it up with the blessing, okay?

  68. Instruction number one, pray for gospel ministers.

  69. Pray for gospel ministers.

  70. Verse 25 is straightforward, isn't it?

  71. It's only four words.

  72. Brothers, pray for us.

  73. Pray for us.

  74. Now, we can take time to think and meditate generally on the necessity of prayer.

  75. After all, if we're going to call ourselves Christians, it means we're going to follow in the footsteps of our Lord.

  76. And if we're going to follow in the footsteps of our Lord, we will pray as he prayed.

  77. We will pray as he taught.

  78. We will pray as he modeled.

  79. We will pray as he commanded.

  80. All of that's true.

  81. But here, Paul has a particular application of prayer in mind.

  82. Two pieces of it, I think, are useful.

  83. First, he was focused, I think, on corporate prayer in this case.

  84. In fact, all three of the instructions, as we come to them in this text, Paul is thinking about what Christians do together,

  85. not merely what Christians are to do in private.

  86. And we understand that somewhat in his repeated use of this term, brothers.

  87. Brothers.

  88. It's used 17 times in this letter.

  89. That's a lot for a little letter like 1 Thessalonians.

  90. 17 times he uses brothers.

  91. In Greek, the difference between brothers and sisters is really just the ending of the word.

  92. But whenever it was being used to speak generally like we would say siblings, it was always in the masculine form.

  93. And as we work through 1 Thessalonians and we're looking at each instance of brothers, what we come to understand contextually is that Paul is not highlighting a group in the church.

  94. He's not addressing only the men.

  95. He's addressing the entire congregation.

  96. We might read it, and some of your Bibles might actually interpret it this way or translate it this way.

  97. Brothers and sisters, pray for us.

  98. He's addressing the whole congregation.

  99. And his instructions seem aimed at what they do together.

  100. And what is it that we do together most fundamentally?

  101. We worship.

  102. And I think we see that coming through in the three instructions, including this one.

  103. So that's part of the focus.

  104. He's not thinking of only private prayer, though we need to care about that.

  105. But here, he's especially concerned with what we're doing in prayer when we are together.

  106. But then there's a second focus.

  107. He was also focused on instructing a particular subject for their corporate prayer.

  108. Notice what he says.

  109. Pray for us.

  110. Pray for us.

  111. Pray for me, Timothy, our companions.

  112. His expectation and request was that they continue in prayer for him and his team as they did gospel work.

  113. Hence the instruction, as I've put it in the heading.

  114. Pray for gospel ministers.

  115. The specific application, I think, here is that we pray together for those serving in gospel ministry.

  116. Perhaps especially doing so and intentionally doing so in the regular worship gatherings of the church.

  117. Notice that the instruction, it isn't to pray for gospel ministry in general.

  118. Though we should certainly do that.

  119. We want to pray for the gospel's advancement in general across the globe.

  120. But that's not what he's aimed at here.

  121. He says pray for people.

  122. Pray for us.

  123. Those who are doing the gospel ministry.

  124. Pray for missionaries like Val and Angela.

  125. Pray for missionaries like the Howard family whom you'll meet in just a few weeks.

  126. Pray for pastors.

  127. And by the way, pray for one another.

  128. Pray for prayer.

  129. Because aren't we all to be doing this gospel work?

  130. But what exactly are we meant to be praying for these people?

  131. Paul doesn't elaborate on that here, does he?

  132. And there could be a few reasons for that.

  133. Certainly the Thessalonians were familiar enough with his circumstances that he didn't need to say anything more.

  134. They've just finished a really fruitful visit from Timothy,

  135. who I'm sure was open with them about all these things.

  136. And Paul doesn't feel the need to elaborate any further than what he does.

  137. But Paul actually routinely asked for churches to pray for him.

  138. And if we just take a quick look at some of the occasions that he does that in the New Testament,

  139. I think it will help us better understand how we should be praying for one another

  140. and praying for those who are serving in gospel ministry in other ways around the world.

  141. There are many.

  142. I want to show you three, maybe four.

  143. First one, just flip over a page.

  144. It's the 2 Thessalonians.

  145. 2 Thessalonians chapter 3, verses 1 and 2.

    2 Thessalonians 3:1

  146. Notice what Paul says here.

  147. Finally, brothers, pray for us.

  148. Pray what for us?

  149. That the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored as happened among you,

  150. that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men.

  151. Three things stick out here to me.

  152. What is he asking them to pray for?

  153. We are to pray that the word of God will do its work.

  154. That the word of God will do its work through these people who are ministering the word to others

  155. in evangelism and in further discipling.

  156. Pray that the word does its work.

  157. As you pray for Val and Angela and others,

  158. pray that God's word would go forth,

  159. that it would speed ahead through their ministry.

  160. We're to pray that what God has done in us,

  161. he'll do in others.

  162. Isn't that what he says?

  163. As has happened in you.

  164. Well, what had happened in 1 Thessalonians?

  165. We know what happened.

  166. The Holy Spirit came and empowered the gospel preaching of Paul and his team

  167. so that they, despite significant persecution,

  168. were not only converted,

  169. but persevered and continued longingly in faithfulness to the Lord.

  170. And he says, Thessalonians,

  171. pray that God will do that same thing in other places.

  172. What else?

  173. Oh, pray that God will deliver gospel ministers from adversaries.

  174. Not for their own sake, but for the sake of the gospel.

  175. I think that's the implication there.

  176. So what should we pray for?

  177. Pray that the word will do its work through God's people,

  178. through his instruments.

  179. Pray that what's happened in your life will happen in others

  180. through this work of the gospel.

  181. Pray that God will overcome the adversaries for the sake of his gospel.

  182. Would you turn to Ephesians 6?

  183. Maybe just a few pages to the left.

  184. Ephesians 6.

  185. And look with me at verses 18 to 20.

  186. Chris is in a series with us right now on the armor of God.

  187. That's what's coming just before this.

  188. I'm picking up just on the tail end of that.

  189. Paul says, pray at all times in the Spirit.

  190. This is verse 18.

  191. Pray at all times in the Spirit with all prayer and supplication

  192. to that end.

  193. Keep alert with all perseverance.

  194. Making supplication.

  195. That's just another term for prayer.

  196. For all the saints.

  197. And then notice, and he says, and also for me.

  198. But he gives a specific thing for them to pray about for him.

  199. Pray for me that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly

  200. to proclaim the mystery of the gospel for which I am an ambassador in chains

  201. that I may declare it boldly as I ought to speak.

  202. What do we gain from this?

  203. What should we be praying for ministers of the gospel?

  204. Well, one, we should pray that God will give gospel ministers exactly what to say.

  205. Oh, isn't that the hard thing to do in our evangelism sometimes?

  206. It's just know what to say and how to appropriately glorify

  207. and accurately give the gospel of God to other people

  208. based on their unique circumstances and their unique questions.

  209. Isn't that hard to do?

  210. In their preaching.

  211. Lord, give me the words to say.

  212. Would you pray for me?

  213. Pray for me, Paul says,

  214. that God would give me exactly what I need to say in any given moment.

  215. Whether that be in the synagogue on a Saturday in any given city

  216. or whether it's in the Arapagus in Athens

  217. among all the philosophers and leading philosophers of the day.

  218. Pray that God will give me what to say.

  219. And then notice the second thing.

  220. Pray that God will give me boldness to say it.

  221. Boldness to say it.

  222. That's what we should pray.

  223. Turn now to 2 Corinthians chapter 1.

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  224. 2 Corinthians chapter 1.

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  225. Just one verse here.

  226. I think is a helpful note on the goal of our prayer.

  227. 2 Corinthians 1.

  228. Verse 11.

  229. You also must help us by prayer

  230. so that many will give thanks

  231. on our behalf for the blessing granted to us

  232. through those prayers.

  233. That's interesting, isn't it?

  234. Paul doesn't say,

  235. look, you know, I'm getting beat up everywhere I go.

  236. Will you just pray that it'll hurt a little bit less?

  237. No, he says, will you pray a lot?

  238. And will you recruit others to pray for us

  239. so that when we see God's work accomplished through us,

  240. we can then turn around with you

  241. and glorify him

  242. that we may give thanks

  243. thanks because he is the one who has done this work

  244. and he's used your prayers to do it?

  245. That's amazing.

  246. Can I just show you one more?

  247. You're close enough to it.

  248. Romans chapter 15.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  249. Romans chapter 15.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  250. And there are many more.

  251. You can search them out on your own.

  252. Romans chapter 15.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  253. Verses 30 to 32.

  254. Paul says,

  255. I appeal to you brothers

  256. by our Lord Jesus Christ

  257. and by the love of the Spirit.

  258. That's an authoritative charge.

  259. That's what's happening there.

  260. To strive together with me

  261. in your prayers

  262. to God

  263. on my behalf.

  264. So again, he's asking for them to pray for him.

  265. But then again,

  266. he gives them a specific thing to pray for.

  267. That I may be delivered

  268. from the unbelievers in Judea.

  269. We've seen him ask for that already.

  270. This one's unique.

  271. That my service for Jerusalem

  272. may be acceptable to the saints.

  273. You know, Paul wasn't the most popular figure

  274. among Christians in Jerusalem.

  275. What's he asking?

  276. Lord, would you just pray

  277. that God would spare me

  278. from the unbelievers

  279. that want to kill me?

  280. And would you pray

  281. that God would so work

  282. in the hearts of the saints

  283. to which I endeavor to minister

  284. that my service to them

  285. will be acceptable.

  286. That they'll understand my love.

  287. And then notice what he says

  288. in verse 32.

  289. And then pray

  290. that by God's will

  291. I can come to you.

  292. That I can come to you with joy

  293. and be refreshed in your company.

  294. Now he gets to them

  295. but he gets to them

  296. via a four year prison sentence.

  297. But what's he asking them to do?

  298. Pray for more opportunity.

  299. How are we to pray

  300. for gospel ministers?

  301. All of these ways

  302. that gives us

  303. a pretty good place to start

  304. doesn't it?

  305. Paul utterly depended

  306. on God for all things.

  307. He knew

  308. that prayer

  309. is one of God's

  310. ordained means

  311. for accomplishing

  312. his divine work.

  313. So he constantly

  314. asked the churches

  315. to pray for him.

  316. Not for prosperity

  317. and health

  318. in and of himself

  319. but for his faithfulness

  320. and the work

  321. of the gospel

  322. through him.

  323. An American pastor

  324. once asked

  325. Charles Spurgeon

  326. about the quote

  327. secret

  328. of his great influence

  329. in London

  330. and throughout Europe.

  331. you've probably

  332. heard this story

  333. before.

  334. After a brief pause

  335. Spurgeon says

  336. simply

  337. my people

  338. pray for me.

  339. There was a

  340. designated place

  341. in the church

  342. that he referred to

  343. as the boiler room.

  344. It's where people

  345. would gather

  346. and they would do

  347. nothing but pray.

  348. They'd pray for him.

  349. They'd pray for the

  350. elders of his church.

  351. They'd pray for the

  352. gospel ministry work.

  353. We trust God

  354. to do

  355. his sovereign work

  356. according to

  357. his good pleasure.

  358. Prayer is not

  359. in opposition to that.

  360. But what prayer does

  361. is it acknowledges

  362. that prayer

  363. is actually

  364. a means

  365. by which

  366. God determines

  367. to do that work.

  368. God not only

  369. ordains the ends

  370. he ordains

  371. the means.

  372. And so he says

  373. come

  374. pray

  375. ask me

  376. commune with me

  377. and I think

  378. we must give

  379. ourselves to this.

  380. I think the instruction

  381. here for us church

  382. is that we must

  383. especially give

  384. ourselves to doing

  385. this for those

  386. we know who are

  387. laboring in the

  388. gospel.

  389. We should do it

  390. in Sunday morning

  391. gatherings.

  392. We should do it

  393. when we gather

  394. for our Christ

  395. from beginning

  396. to end study

  397. this summer

  398. for our first

  399. principles class

  400. this summer

  401. when we're getting

  402. together over coffee

  403. we should be

  404. readily prepared

  405. to pray

  406. for those

  407. who are

  408. ministering

  409. the gospel.

  410. Brothers pray

  411. for me.

  412. Brothers pray

  413. for those you know

  414. in this community

  415. and around the world

  416. who are laboring

  417. in gospel ministry.

  418. Pray for one another

  419. all of these things

  420. as we endeavor

  421. to obey

  422. the great commission.

  423. That's instruction

  424. number one.

  425. The other two

  426. will be a little bit

  427. quicker.

  428. Instruction number two

  429. greet

  430. all the brothers

  431. with a holy kiss

  432. he says.

  433. What's the instruction?

  434. I think it's this

  435. express

  436. Christian

  437. affection.

  438. expression.

  439. Express

  440. Christian

  441. affection.

  442. Greet all the brothers

  443. with a holy kiss.

  444. Now let's be honest

  445. that's weird.

  446. It's not only weird

  447. because kissing's weird

  448. certainly not sanitary

  449. it's weird because

  450. it actually seems

  451. a bit trivial here

  452. doesn't it?

  453. Why would Paul

  454. be concerned

  455. about instructing

  456. Christians

  457. on how to greet

  458. one another?

  459. But this is not

  460. an unusual command

  461. in the scripture

  462. actually it's

  463. repeated quite often.

  464. Paul issued it

  465. in at least

  466. three other places

  467. to varying churches.

  468. So did Peter.

  469. The exact command

  470. Peter makes

  471. one change

  472. rather than

  473. a holy kiss

  474. he says

  475. the kiss

  476. of love.

  477. When Paul

  478. met with the

  479. Ephesian elders

  480. for the final time

  481. in Acts 20

  482. it says that

  483. they fell

  484. on him

  485. that they

  486. embraced him

  487. that they

  488. kissed him.

  489. When Jesus

  490. told the parable

  491. of the

  492. prodigal son

  493. as the

  494. prodigal

  495. is still

  496. a great distance

  497. off

  498. the father

  499. sees him

  500. and what

  501. does the

  502. father do?

  503. Jesus uses

  504. this language

  505. he says

  506. the father

  507. ran to

  508. him

  509. and embraced

  510. him

  511. and kissed

  512. him.

  513. So what

  514. seems a trivial

  515. thing to us

  516. had an obvious

  517. meaning and

  518. purpose to

  519. these early

  520. Christians.

  521. I don't want to

  522. overtax what

  523. Paul instructed

  524. here but I

  525. don't think we

  526. can quickly

  527. dismiss this

  528. either.

  529. So let's

  530. meditate on it

  531. for a moment.

  532. Culturally

  533. speaking the

  534. kiss was

  535. used to

  536. demonstrate

  537. familial

  538. affection

  539. or to

  540. symbolize

  541. peace

  542. between two

  543. parties.

  544. Now I

  545. don't think

  546. Paul's purpose

  547. in this case

  548. was to

  549. institute a

  550. kiss as

  551. the standard

  552. and universal

  553. greeting for

  554. Christians.

  555. I think that

  556. would be too

  557. rigid of an

  558. interpretation

  559. but I don't

  560. think that what

  561. Paul is

  562. instructing here

  563. is merely

  564. politeness.

  565. He's not just

  566. simply saying

  567. make sure that

  568. you give a

  569. good nod or

  570. smile or

  571. handshake or

  572. say hello

  573. whenever you

  574. see another

  575. Christian.

  576. I think it's

  577. more than that.

  578. I don't think

  579. that it's just

  580. politeness.

  581. I think that

  582. would be too

  583. loose of an

  584. interpretation.

  585. The command

  586. is about

  587. intentionally

  588. and genuinely

  589. expressing

  590. familial

  591. family

  592. affection

  593. to one

  594. another

  595. in the

  596. church.

  597. It's a

  598. call to

  599. outwardly

  600. demonstrate

  601. toward fellow

  602. believers

  603. the heart

  604. level affection

  605. that you

  606. possess

  607. inwardly

  608. for them.

  609. It's

  610. working

  611. something

  612. from the

  613. inside

  614. to the

  615. out

  616. in a

  617. physical

  618. expression.

  619. It is a

  620. call not

  621. only to

  622. love each

  623. other

  624. but to

  625. express

  626. that

  627. love

  628. in the

  629. way

  630. that

  631. we

  632. interact

  633. on an

  634. ongoing

  635. basis.

  636. But why?

  637. Why give

  638. this

  639. command?

  640. Well in

  641. doing so

  642. not only

  643. do we

  644. edify

  645. one

  646. another

  647. once we're

  648. able to

  649. move past

  650. perhaps the

  651. potential

  652. awkwardness

  653. of the

  654. act.

  655. We edify

  656. one another

  657. but what

  658. else do

  659. we do?

  660. We

  661. demonstrate

  662. something

  663. here.

  664. We

  665. demonstrate

  666. our

  667. gospel

  668. union

  669. to the

  670. watching

  671. world.

  672. A

  673. people

  674. who

  675. most

  676. often

  677. in a

  678. church

  679. setting

  680. have no

  681. other

  682. commonality

  683. with one

  684. another

  685. expressing

  686. a kind

  687. of affection

  688. that is

  689. typically

  690. only seen

  691. in blood

  692. relatives.

  693. I think

  694. that's what's

  695. meant here.

  696. I think

  697. that's what's

  698. at the

  699. heart of

  700. what Paul

  701. is saying

  702. here.

  703. He's not

  704. concerned for

  705. us to kiss

  706. as we

  707. greet.

  708. I don't

  709. think that's

  710. the primary

  711. concern

  712. here.

  713. I don't

  714. need Josh

  715. laying a

  716. wet one

  717. on me

  718. after service

  719. today.

  720. But he

  721. isn't just

  722. speaking about

  723. an inward

  724. disposition

  725. either.

  726. I think

  727. we need to

  728. understand this

  729. as a

  730. physical

  731. yet appropriate

  732. action

  733. that expresses

  734. real affection

  735. for brothers

  736. and sisters

  737. in Christ.

  738. And can

  739. we just

  740. acknowledge

  741. that's not

  742. an easy

  743. thing to

  744. do.

  745. I'm not

  746. real touchy

  747. feely just

  748. kind of by

  749. nature.

  750. I fell

  751. in this

  752. often

  753. to just

  754. brother I

  755. love you.

  756. Sister I'm

  757. praying for

  758. you.

  759. We need

  760. to remember

  761. what's at

  762. the heart

  763. of this

  764. instruction.

  765. It's not

  766. about the

  767. act.

  768. There's

  769. something

  770. under the

  771. surface

  772. here.

  773. How do

  774. you love

  775. the ones

  776. who drive

  777. you crazy?

  778. Ask my

  779. wife.

  780. Let alone

  781. express that

  782. love.

  783. After all

  784. to do it

  785. disingenuously

  786. would mean

  787. that it's

  788. not a

  789. holy act.

  790. let us

  791. not forget

  792. that Jesus'

  793. very betrayal

  794. came at

  795. the sign

  796. of a

  797. kiss.

  798. The

  799. showing of

  800. affection

  801. without the

  802. possession of

  803. affection.

  804. So we need

  805. to think

  806. about this.

  807. How do we

  808. actually love

  809. and express

  810. that love

  811. for people

  812. that we

  813. actually

  814. struggle

  815. quite a lot

  816. with feeling

  817. affection for?

  818. And the

  819. answer is in

  820. the gospel.

  821. Isn't it?

  822. Christ

  823. and Christ

  824. alone

  825. is our

  826. bond.

  827. Our

  828. fellowship,

  829. our affection

  830. with one

  831. another in

  832. this church

  833. is based

  834. on nothing

  835. else.

  836. It should be

  837. based on

  838. nothing else

  839. than Christ

  840. and Christ

  841. alone.

  842. Our

  843. unity

  844. with one

  845. another

  846. is based

  847. entirely

  848. on our

  849. union

  850. with Christ.

  851. We see

  852. that in

  853. 1 John 1.

  854. We see

  855. it in

  856. Ephesians 2.

  857. We see

  858. it in

  859. John 13.

  860. Over and

  861. over and

  862. over,

  863. the affection

  864. that we

  865. are to

  866. hold and

  867. the affection

  868. that we

  869. are to

  870. express

  871. is not

  872. feigned.

  873. It's not

  874. manufactured.

  875. It is a

  876. genuine

  877. affection that

  878. does not

  879. come from

  880. any

  881. commonality

  882. save the

  883. Lord Jesus

  884. Christ.

  885. Our

  886. spiritual

  887. union

  888. with Him,

  889. a divine

  890. miracle that

  891. takes place

  892. at the

  893. moment that

  894. Christ saves

  895. you,

  896. that union

  897. is what

  898. unites you

  899. with everyone

  900. else who

  901. is also in

  902. union with

  903. Him.

  904. That's what's

  905. at the heart

  906. of this.

  907. It's the

  908. gospel.

  909. But as

  910. long as we

  911. attempt to

  912. center our

  913. relationships on

  914. any other

  915. potential

  916. commonality,

  917. whether it

  918. be our

  919. race,

  920. or whether

  921. it be

  922. our family

  923. situations,

  924. whether or

  925. not you

  926. have a

  927. kid or

  928. you don't

  929. have a

  930. kid,

  931. whether or

  932. not you're

  933. married or

  934. unmarried,

  935. whether or

  936. not you're

  937. in the

  938. older generation

  939. or the

  940. younger

  941. generation,

  942. whether or

  943. not you

  944. live in

  945. this place

  946. or that

  947. place,

  948. whether you

  949. eat this

  950. food or

  951. that food,

  952. whether you

  953. do this

  954. job or

  955. that job,

  956. if it's

  957. trying to

  958. base it on

  959. anything

  960. else,

  961. anything

  962. other than

  963. Christ,

  964. you will

  965. never fully

  966. possess and

  967. express the

  968. kind of love

  969. that is behind

  970. this command.

  971. It can be on

  972. nothing else

  973. and it is on

  974. nothing else.

  975. Our affection

  976. for one another

  977. is rooted in

  978. Christ's affection

  979. for us.

  980. Your affection

  981. for me and

  982. my affection

  983. for you and

  984. your affection

  985. for every other

  986. Christian is

  987. rooted in the

  988. fact of

  989. Christ's affection

  990. for that

  991. person.

  992. And how

  993. was his

  994. affection

  995. displayed?

  996. Romans 5a.

  997. But God

  998. demonstrated his

  999. love to us

  1000. in that while

  1001. we were yet

  1002. sinners,

  1003. Christ died

  1004. for us.

  1005. That's his

  1006. affection.

  1007. That's the

  1008. extent of his

  1009. affection.

1010. And it is as a

  1011. result of his

  1012. affection for that

  1013. person that drives

  1014. you crazy or

  1015. perhaps has

  1016. significantly hurt

  1017. you.

  1018. That you

  1019. actually not

  1020. only have the

  1021. power but the

  1022. command to

  1023. love them.

  1024. You are to

  1025. love that

  1026. Christian that

  1027. drives you crazy

  1028. because Jesus

  1029. loved him enough

  1030. to bear God's

  1031. wrath in his

  1032. place.

  1033. I had a

  1034. conversation with

  1035. Julie one time.

  1036. This just tells

  1037. you how messed

  1038. up I am.

  1039. We were talking

  1040. about something

  1041. like this and

  1042. I said,

  1043. how could

  1044. Jesus love a

  1045. person like

  1046. that?

  1047. And you

  1048. know how God

  1049. works.

  1050. You know what

  1051. I am about to

  1052. say almost

  1053. immediately.

  1054. It is like God

  1055. says, how could

  1056. anybody love you

  1057. like that?

  1058. That is what

  1059. this love is.

  1060. it is not about

  1061. anything else

  1062. than that.

  1063. It is about the

  1064. gospel.

  1065. Why does Paul

  1066. use brothers

  1067. 17 times in a

  1068. short letter that

  1069. even in your

  1070. double columned

  1071. Bibles takes up

  1072. two and a half

  1073. pages?

  1074. 17 times.

  1075. Why?

  1076. Because in

  1077. Christ we

  1078. truly are a

  1079. family with an

  1080. eternal bond that

  1081. cannot be broken.

  1082. We can sense

  1083. estrangement but it

  1084. will not be

  1085. broken because

  1086. Christ will lose

  1087. none who

  1088. belongs to him.

  1089. And we need to

  1090. endeavor to

  1091. express that

  1092. blood-bought

  1093. affection in our

  1094. interactions with

  1095. one another.

  1096. Instruction

  1097. number three.

  1098. We need to

  1099. recognize the

  1100. authority of the

  1101. scriptures.

  1102. We need to

  1103. recognize the

  1104. authority of the

  1105. scriptures.

  1106. Look at verse

  1107. 27.

  1108. I put you under

  1109. oath before the

  1110. Lord to have

  1111. this letter read

  1112. to all the

  1113. brothers.

  1114. Simple.

  1115. Yeah.

  1116. Important.

  1117. Very.

  1118. Now many have

  1119. suggested perhaps

  1120. you've had this

  1121. thought before that

  1122. the apostles

  1123. were unaware that

  1124. what they were

  1125. writing was the

  1126. inspired word of

  1127. God.

  1128. Passages like this

  1129. prove otherwise.

  1130. It may not have

  1131. occurred to Paul at

  1132. any given moment

  1133. that this letter

  1134. would eventually be

  1135. added to a

  1136. collection of

  1137. apostolic writings

1138. and then bound in a

  1139. codex in the first

  1140. and second century and

  1141. developed through time

  1142. and passed on 2,000

  1143. years later in the

1144. form that we have it

  1145. today.

  1146. That may not have

  1147. occurred to him.

  1148. Who would ever

  1149. think of that?

  1150. Right?

  1151. But that's not the

  1152. point.

  1153. He clearly understood

  1154. what he was writing

  1155. to bear the authority

  1156. of the Lord Jesus.

  1157. Peter himself in

  1158. 2 Peter 3

  1159. literally calls Paul's

  1160. writings scripture

  1161. and puts them equal

  1162. to the Old Testament

  1163. scriptures.

1164. So this was not a

1165. secret to them and it

1166. was not a secret to the

  1167. early church.

  1168. The apostles understood

  1169. themselves to be

  1170. communicating God's

  1171. inerrant truth to the

  1172. church and the

  1173. Thessalonians through

  1174. this instruction were

  1175. to consider the letter

  1176. as coming from God

  1177. to them not merely

  1178. from Paul and his

  1179. team.

  1180. The oath language here

  1181. might be a little

  1182. confusing.

  1183. Neither Paul nor the

  1184. congregation is agreeing

1185. to an oath in this

  1186. instance.

1187. The verb it just means

  1188. to adjure.

  1189. I adjure you.

  1190. It means to bind.

  1191. It's an expression of

  1192. authority.

1193. So that speaking with a

  1194. unique apostolic

  1195. authority given to him

  1196. by the Lord Jesus

  1197. Christ, Paul bound

  1198. these Christians.

  1199. He charged this church

  1200. to ensure that the

1201. letter was read in the

  1202. public gathering and

  1203. that each believer would

  1204. be held accountable to

  1205. what it says.

  1206. That's what this

  1207. instruction is about.

  1208. In other words, the

  1209. final instruction is

  1210. that the church

  1211. recognizes the

  1212. apostolic scriptures,

  1213. that the church

  1214. holds them as its

  1215. supreme authority,

  1216. and that the church

  1217. keeps them at the

  1218. center of their

  1219. worship.

  1220. Remember, it seems

  1221. that everything Paul's

  1222. instructing here really

1223. has kind of a bent

  1224. toward their public

  1225. gathering, what they're

  1226. doing together.

  1227. Now, why would Paul

1228. bind them to such a

  1229. command?

  1230. Because he understood

  1231. that what he was

  1232. writing was from God,

1233. and as he said in

  1234. chapter 2 in verse 13,

1235. it is the word of God

  1236. given through the

  1237. apostles that is,

1238. quote, at work in us.

  1239. How are they to

  1240. persevere?

  1241. Through the word.

1242. How are they to grow in

  1243. holiness and sanctification?

  1244. Through the word.

1245. How are they to know

  1246. how to pray?

  1247. Through the word.

1248. How are they to know

  1249. how to love?

  1250. Through the word.

  1251. The Spirit uses the

1252. word to do his work.

1253. Paul knows it, and so

1254. he binds the church to

  1255. this.

1256. And we know any church

  1257. that diminishes in any

  1258. way.

  1259. The authority and the

  1260. centrality of the Bible

  1261. will eventually lose the

  1262. gospel.

1263. At first, it may just

1264. seem like a minor change

  1265. in hermeneutic principle

1266. as we see happening all

1267. over the place right now

  1268. in American churches.

1269. to say, well, God only

  1270. meant this instruction to

  1271. be applicable to us.

  1272. This instruction only

  1273. meant something to them.

  1274. That's a bad hermeneutic

  1275. that diminishes the

  1276. authority of the

  1277. scripture.

  1278. It diminishes the

  1279. centrality of the

1280. scripture, and it sets a

1281. church on the path to

  1282. apostasy.

  1283. They will lose the

  1284. gospel.

  1285. And historically, look

  1286. around you at the

  1287. churches in this

  1288. community.

  1289. Those who started on

  1290. that path do not

  1291. have the gospel.

1292. Julie and I took Ashlyn

1293. to a concert the other

1294. day at a church in our

  1295. community.

1296. She was playing with the

  1297. orchestra.

1298. And in their lobby, I

1299. could have picked up a

1300. pin, a button, to put on

1301. my shirt that says, what

  1302. are my pronouns?

  1303. Just ask me.

1304. A church that Sunday by

  1305. Sunday proclaims to know

1306. Christ and to preach his

  1307. gospel.

  1308. They've lost the gospel.

  1309. gospel.

  1310. Why?

  1311. Because at some point

  1312. along the way, they've

  1313. moved away from the

  1314. authority and the

  1315. centrality of the

  1316. scriptures.

  1317. Churches that do not

1318. have a pulpit at the

  1319. center, that are not

  1320. preaching sermons from

  1321. the Bible, but homilies

  1322. from movies or personal

  1323. anecdotes.

  1324. They will lose the

  1325. gospel.

1326. We must not do that.

  1327. We can't.

  1328. This is just another

1329. reminder why here in this

  1330. instruction.

1331. We need to keep the

1332. scriptures at the center of

  1333. all that we do.

1334. We must preach the Bible.

  1335. Bible.

1336. We must read the Bible.

1337. We must pray the Bible.

1338. We must sing the Bible.

1339. And all of that in our

  1340. worship services.

1341. That's what should be at

1342. the heart of what we're

  1343. doing.

  1344. Letting God work through

  1345. his word.

  1346. All our beliefs and

  1347. behaviors must be weighed

1348. against the word of God.

  1349. And anything found in

1350. opposition to it must be

  1351. repented of.

1352. And we must be submitted to

  1353. the scriptures.

1354. As God's people, we must

  1355. hold a high view of God's

  1356. word.

1357. And we cannot waver on

  1358. this.

  1359. The New Hampshire Baptist

  1360. Confession of Faith so

1361. helpfully tells us it is the

  1362. perfect treasure of heavenly

  1363. instruction.

1364. It has God for its author,

1365. salvation for its end, and

1366. truth without any mixture of

  1367. error for its matter.

1368. It reveals the principles by

1369. which God will judge us.

1370. And therefore is and shall

1371. remain to the end of the

1372. world the true center of

  1373. Christian union and the

  1374. supreme standard by which

1375. all human conduct, all human

  1376. creeds, and all opinions

  1377. must be tried.

1378. What does Paul mean when he

1379. says, I bind you to read

  1380. this letter to everybody.

  1381. Don't leave anybody out.

1382. He means this is the

  1383. authoritative word of God.

  1384. It must hold supreme

1385. authority over your life, and

1386. it should be at the center of

  1387. everything you're doing as a

  1388. church in Thessalonica.

1389. And that truth holds true for

1390. the church in Cornelius as

  1391. well.

  1392. Now that's the three

  1393. instructions.

1394. Let me close with the

  1395. blessing, and it's simple.

  1396. Verse 28.

1397. The grace of our Lord Jesus

  1398. Christ be with you.

1399. The grace of our Lord Jesus

  1400. Christ be with you.

  1401. unsurprisingly, Paul officially

1402. ends the letter on a note of

  1403. grace.

1404. The unmerited favor of the Lord

1405. Jesus Christ found supremely in

1406. the gospel of his death and

  1407. resurrection and lordship.

1408. Paul brought that grace, quote, to

  1409. them in chapter 1, verse 1.

1410. He says, Paul, to the Christians in

1411. Thessalonica, I bring grace to you

1412. from God the Father and the Lord

  1413. Jesus Christ.

1414. When he closes the letter, he

1415. changes it just a little bit,

  1416. doesn't he?

1417. Now, as he signs off, he prays

1418. that the grace of Jesus will go

  1419. with them.

1420. It's grace from beginning to end.

  1421. That's what Christianity is.

1422. It's grace from beginning to end.

1423. And that's my prayer for you

  1424. today.

1425. That you will know the grace of

1426. God in the gospel of the Son and

1427. in the power of the Holy Spirit.

1428. And that the outpouring of his

1429. grace will go with you until he

  1430. comes.

1431. He who calls you is faithful.

1432. He will surely do it.

  1433. Let's pray.
