  1. From as early as the 4th century, Christians have recognized this day as Palm Sunday, which of course commemorates the moment when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.

  2. It's often referred to as Holy Week. Of course, Holy Week culminates in the celebration of Christ's resurrection on Easter Sunday.

  3. And perhaps beginning on this day and through the week, you have a particular reading plan.

  4. Perhaps you're reading through the Gospels, as they tell, of the days leading up to the crucifixion and then, of course, the crucifixion itself and the resurrection.

  5. Our church has never really followed a liturgical calendar, at least not very rigidly.

  6. We do what most churches do, of course, with Easter and Christmas, and occasionally we'll throw in one of the other dates as well.

  7. But today, we're going to jump on board with the typical Christian liturgical calendar,

  8. joining with literally millions of Christians around the world today who are meditating on the significance of this moment in the life of Christ.

  9. And we're going to do so by considering the account of this found in the Gospel of Luke.

  10. Luke 19, beginning at verse 28.

  11. When he had said these things, he went on ahead going to Jerusalem.

  12. When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany at the mount that is called Olivet,

  13. he sent two of his disciples, saying,

  14. Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat.

  15. Untie it and bring it here.

  16. If anyone asks you, why are you untying it?

  17. You shall say this,

  18. The Lord has need of it.

  19. So those who were sent away and found it just as he had told them.

  20. And as they were untying the colt, its owner said to them,

  21. Why are you untying the colt?

  22. Reasonable question.

  23. They said,

  24. The Lord has need of it.

  25. And they brought it to Jesus and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it.

  26. And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.

  27. As he was drawing near, already on the way down the Mount of Olives,

  28. the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen,

  29. saying,

  30. Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord.

  31. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.

  32. And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him,

  33. Teacher, rebuke your disciples.

  34. And he answered,

  35. I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.

  36. And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it,

  37. saying,

  38. Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace,

  39. but now they are hidden from your eyes.

  40. For the days will come upon you when your enemies will set up a barricade around you

  41. and surround you and hem you in on every side

  42. and tear you down to the ground,

  43. you and your children within you,

  44. and they will not leave one stone upon another in you

  45. because you did not know the time of your visitation.

  46. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold,

  47. saying to them,

  48. It is written,

  49. My house shall be a house of prayer.

  50. You have made it a den of robbers.

  51. And he was teaching daily in the temple.

  52. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people

  53. were seeking to destroy him.

  54. But they did not find anything they could do,

  55. for all the people were hanging on his words.

  56. Amen.

  57. What is important for us to remember

  58. what the Gospels,

  59. by Gospels I mean

  60. the four Gospel pieces of literature in the New Testament,

  61. it's important for us to remember

  62. what they intend to accomplish

  63. as a literary genre.

  64. Many people will equate them to biographies,

  65. but while they contain biographical information,

  66. the authors of these Gospels

  67. were not intending simply to tell us a few things

  68. about Jesus' life.

  69. That's not exactly what they are.

  70. The Gospels are collections

  71. of historical data

  72. meant to persuade,

  73. meant to persuade the readers

  74. of a particular thing,

  75. of the identity and the work of Christ,

  76. of Jesus, of Nazareth,

  77. and to persuade the reader,

  78. therefore,

  79. to trust in him

  80. as the promised Messiah

  81. and the Son of God

  82. who has come to save us from our sins.

  83. So they're not storybooks

  84. designed to entertain us.

  85. They are arguments

  86. meant to convince us.

  87. That's what the four Gospels are.

  88. That's what they intend

  89. to accomplish,

  90. what their authors intended to accomplish.

  91. Now, each of the four Gospel authors

  92. have unique sources.

  93. They also have unique audiences

  94. for their material.

  95. Matthew and John

  96. were both part of Jesus' band of disciples

  97. and were themselves eyewitnesses

  98. of the events and the teachings

  99. of Jesus' ministry.

  100. John Mark was not a direct disciple

  101. of the Lord Jesus,

  102. but he came shortly thereafter

  103. and was mentored

  104. by the Apostle Peter.

  105. Some point along the way

  106. throughout their ministry in Rome,

  107. those who had been listening

  108. to Peter's preaching

  109. and hearing Peter's eyewitness testimony

  110. of the things of Jesus

  111. asked that Mark would record those things

  112. that they may have a copy of it

  113. and the Lord has used that

  114. so that we might have Mark's Gospel as well.

  115. And then we come to Luke.

  116. Luke was a companion

  117. of the Apostle Paul

  118. and because of that,

  119. he moved in prominent Christian circles

  120. in the first century

  121. and his Gospel

  122. presents the accounts

  123. of various eyewitness testimonies

  124. of the Lord Jesus.

  125. And the purpose

  126. of this collection of testimonies

  127. by Luke's own admission

  128. is that we might have certainty

  129. about the person

  130. and the work of Jesus

  131. of Nazareth

  132. as it relates

  133. to our personal salvation.

  134. Let me just read you

  135. the opening dialogue

  136. of his Gospel,

  137. the very first four verses.

  138. Luke says,

  139. Inasmuch as many have undertaken

  140. to compile a narrative

  141. of the things

  142. that have been accomplished

  143. among us,

  144. just as those

  145. who from the beginning

  146. were eyewitnesses

  147. and ministers of the word

  148. have delivered them to us,

  149. it seemed good to me also,

  150. having followed all things closely

  151. for some time past,

  152. to write an orderly account

  153. for you,

  154. most excellent Theophilus,

  155. that you may have certainty

  156. concerning the things

  157. you have been taught.

  158. So,

  159. the events recorded for us

  160. in Luke 19

  161. are there

  162. to contribute

  163. to Luke's persuasive argument

  164. about the Gospel of Jesus.

  165. If we're trying to wonder

  166. why are these here,

  167. what is their purpose,

  168. fundamentally,

  169. Luke has already told us,

  170. they are here

  171. as part of an orderly account

  172. of the life

  173. and ministry

  174. and teachings

  175. of the Lord Jesus

  176. in order that we might

  177. have certainty

  178. about what actually happened

  179. in His life

  180. so that we may increase

  181. in our faith in Him

  182. as Messiah and Lord.

  183. Now,

  184. the significance

  185. of the triumphal entry,

  186. as we often refer to it

  187. in Christian language,

  188. the significance of it

  189. to the arguments

  190. of the Gospels

  191. is undoubtable

  192. because all four of them

  193. include a detailed account

  194. of this particular event.

  195. Now,

  196. that's unusual.

  197. It's not unusual

  198. for Matthew,

  199. Mark,

  200. and Luke,

  201. the synoptic Gospels,

  202. to share lots of material

  203. between one another,

  204. although,

  205. with differing perspectives,

  206. they have lots of the same material

  207. that they're covering.

  208. John is different from that.

  209. John is doing a different kind of thing

  210. with his Gospel,

  211. filling in some gaps.

  212. It's unusual for us

  213. to find moments

  214. in Jesus' life

  215. that are recorded

  216. in all four,

  217. and so when they are recorded

  218. in all four,

  219. we should pay careful attention

  220. to why they're there.

  221. Well,

  222. this is one such story.

  223. It's in all four

  224. of our Gospels,

  225. and it's not merely mentioned

  226. in the four Gospels.

  227. It's actually covered

  228. in incredible detail.

  229. It highlights

  230. a significant moment

  231. of prophetic fulfillment,

  232. and it reveals

  233. a great deal

  234. about Jesus' character,

  235. purpose,

  236. as the Messiah of God.

  237. And what Luke does here for us

  238. in Luke 19

  239. that I find to be so helpful

  240. is he groups

  241. three unique scenes

  242. together

  243. to help us see

  244. Jesus

  245. as our prophet,

  246. priest,

  247. and king.

  248. Studying through this this week,

  249. I thought about

  250. the toys that I had,

  251. that we had as kids.

  252. I think Mattel made them.

  253. They were called

  254. viewfinders,

  255. which were like

  256. these funny little

  257. camera-looking things.

  258. You'd put your eyes up to it,

  259. and they had the reel,

  260. the picture reel

  261. that you'd stick in the top.

  262. You could change out the reels,

  263. and there was a lever

  264. on the side.

  265. When you look through the camera,

  266. you saw a picture,

  267. and if you pull the lever

  268. on the side,

  269. the reel turns,

  270. and you see the next picture.

  271. You guys have those as kids?

  272. Yeah, okay.

  273. So you know

  274. what I'm talking about.

  275. Viewfinders,

  276. Mattel made them.

  277. I don't know

  278. if they make them anymore,

  279. but I remember them

  280. as a kid.

  281. I thought about that.

  282. As Luke is compiling

  283. these eyewitness accounts,

  284. and as he gets to

  285. chapter 19 here,

  286. and he's telling us

  287. about this momentous moment

  288. in Jesus' life

  289. and ministry,

  290. and he groups

  291. these three pictures together,

  292. I want to take

  293. the viewfinder approach

  294. to the text.

  295. That is,

  296. I want us to

  297. kind of flip through

  298. the three scenes

  299. pictured here

  300. so that we might

  301. get a general idea

  302. of what happened

  303. while thinking

  304. primarily

  305. about how each scene

  306. contributes to

  307. our understanding

  308. of the gospel,

  309. our understanding

  310. of the gospel of Jesus.

  311. So that's what we're

  312. going to do.

  313. We can't cover

  314. every detail.

  315. I'll have to leave

  316. that to you,

  317. but what we're going

  318. to do,

  319. we're just going to

  320. pull the lever

  321. a couple times.

  322. We're going to see

  323. the scenes.

  324. We're going to examine

  325. them briefly,

  326. and ask how is this

  327. contributing to our

  328. understanding of the

  329. gospel of Jesus?

  330. scene number one.

  331. We might call it

  332. riding down the road.

  333. Riding down the road.

  334. The first picture here

  335. is our Bible viewfinder.

  336. It's a celebratory scene.

  337. Jesus is mounted

  338. on a donkey

  339. traveling from

  340. the Mount of Olives

  341. to Jerusalem.

  342. A growing multitude

  343. of people are beginning

  344. to line the streets

  345. with clothing

  346. and palm branches.

  347. The crowd

  348. greets the Lord Jesus

  349. not as a rabbi.

  350. They greet him

  351. in this moment

  352. as a king.

  353. And their shouts

  354. are shouts of

  355. salvation from God.

  356. Clearly,

  357. they believed

  358. that Jesus

  359. was the promised

  360. Messiah King

  361. come from God

  362. to deliver them.

  363. Their triumphant

  364. shouts then

  365. suggest they expected

  366. him to make

  367. his move

  368. during this

  369. particular

  370. Passover event.

  371. And they weren't

  372. entirely wrong.

  373. Jesus indeed

  374. was the promised

  375. Messiah King

  376. and he would

  377. indeed deliver

  378. his people

  379. during this

  380. celebration

  381. of Passover.

  382. But he wouldn't

  383. do it at all

  384. how they wanted

  385. or at all

  386. how they expected.

  387. He didn't come

  388. as a conquering king

  389. to defeat

  390. Roman oppressors.

  391. He came

  392. as a humble king

  393. to lay down

  394. his life

  395. as a sacrifice

  396. for their sins.

  397. I want to highlight

  398. three ideas

  399. for you in this picture

  400. that's presented

  401. to us by Luke.

  402. The first thing

  403. I want you to notice

  404. is that the scene

  405. here is deliberate.

  406. It's deliberate.

  407. Look with me

  408. at verse 28.

  409. When he had said

  410. these things

  411. he went on ahead

  412. going up to Jerusalem

  413. and when he drew near

  414. to Bethphage and Bethany

  415. at the mount

  416. that is called Olivet

  417. he sent two of his

  418. disciples saying

  419. go into the village

  420. in front of you

  421. where on entering

  422. you will find

  423. a colt tied

  424. on which no one

  425. has ever yet sat.

  426. Untie it

  427. and bring it here.

  428. If anyone asks you

  429. why are you

  430. untying it

  431. you shall say this

  432. the Lord has need of it.

  433. So those who were sent

  434. went away

  435. and found it

  436. just as he had told them

  437. and as they were

  438. untying the colt

  439. its owners said to them

  440. why are you

  441. untying the colt

  442. and they said

  443. the Lord has

  444. need of it.

  445. Deliberate

  446. is what comes

  447. to the surface here.

  448. There is a common notion

  449. about Jesus

  450. that

  451. he was

  452. an incredible teacher

  453. who just

  454. unfortunately

  455. was crushed

  456. beneath

  457. the will

  458. of history

  459. as one writer

  460. put it.

  461. That he was just

  462. kind of

  463. he was doing

  464. a lot of good things

  465. he was

  466. he was a notable man

  467. and he just happened

  468. to be

  469. wrong place

  470. wrong time

  471. and was crushed

  472. by the corruption

  473. of his day.

  474. The idea

  475. it intends

  476. to portray

  477. the Lord

  478. as a good man

  479. caught in circumstances

  480. that were

  481. out of his control

  482. those circumstances

  483. being Roman oppression

  484. in Palestine

  485. of the day

  486. those circumstances

  487. being a corrupt

  488. spiritual government

  489. among

  490. the Jewish people

  491. who of course

  492. were

  493. his enemies

  494. in these moments

  495. and we understand

  496. how all of that went.

  497. The Bible however

  498. repeatedly asserts

  499. the opposite of that.

  500. At no point

  501. was Jesus

  502. ever in anything

  503. but total control

  504. of what was happening

  505. to

  506. and around him.

  507. He knew

  508. from the very beginning

  509. what his purpose was.

  510. it was to

  511. die for our sins

  512. to raise from the dead.

  513. He repeatedly

  514. revealed this

  515. to his disciples

  516. even telling them

  517. exactly how it would

  518. unfold

  519. and how it would

  520. take place.

  521. And at this point

  522. in Luke's gospel

  523. if you were to trace

  524. the chapters leading up

  525. you would find

  526. that what Jesus

  527. is doing

  528. is he's making

  529. a very direct

  530. purposeful

  531. deliberate

  532. intentional move

  533. towards Jerusalem

  534. acknowledging

  535. that this will be

  536. his last move

  537. toward Jerusalem.

  538. That what awaits

  539. him there

  540. is betrayal

  541. he will be turned

  542. over to the Roman

  543. authorities

  544. he will be crucified

  545. and then subsequently

  546. rise from the dead.

  547. It's all deliberate.

  548. He's in total control.

  549. Even in his own trial

  550. you'll remember

  551. Pilate

  552. urging him

  553. at one point

  554. to answer for himself.

  555. Pilate unwilling

  556. to crucify him

  557. in that moment

  558. says don't you realize

  559. that I have the power

  560. to free you.

  561. You'll remember

  562. Jesus' response.

  563. You would have

  564. no power over me

  565. were it not given you

  566. from the Father.

  567. He's in total control.

  568. He knows what's happening

  569. and he's moving

  570. towards that

  571. and this story

  572. is no different.

  573. What we see here

  574. in the triumphal entry

  575. in the moments

  576. leading up to it

  577. we see on Jesus' part

  578. careful premeditation.

  579. He's moving

  580. toward Jerusalem

  581. he's probably

  582. two miles

  583. outside of the city

  584. he intentionally

  585. pauses near the villages

  586. of Bethphage

  587. and Bethany

  588. as he was

  589. prone to visit

  590. many times before

  591. and he prepares

  592. himself

  593. for this

  594. royal procession.

  595. now how he knew

  596. the donkey

  597. would be there

  598. and would be tied up

  599. isn't explained

  600. to us in the text.

  601. Perhaps it was

  602. his omniscience

  603. and his divine person

  604. and his divine nature

  605. that was just aware

  606. and knew what would unfold.

  607. I think the simplest

  608. explanation

  609. is the best one

  610. in this case

  611. which is that

  612. Jesus just planned

  613. for this moment.

  614. It's almost as if

  615. he's even

  616. made his arrangements

  617. with the owners

  618. of this donkey

  619. and he's even

  620. supplied a passcode

  621. as if to say

  622. hey I'm going to

  623. send some people

  624. your way eventually

  625. and when you see

  626. them untying it

  627. ask them what they're doing

  628. and if they say

  629. these words

  630. the Lord has need of it

  631. you'll know it's from me.

  632. I think it's just

  633. deliberate arrangement

  634. premeditation

  635. he's working things out

  636. he's doing it on purpose

  637. but why?

  638. Why would he arrange

  639. such a thing?

  640. John and

  641. Matthew's gospels

  642. remind us

  643. that this was

  644. an explicit fulfillment

  645. of something spoken

  646. by the prophet Zechariah.

  647. Zechariah chapter 9

    Zechariah 9:9

  648. verse 9

  649. he says

  650. rejoice greatly

  651. O daughter of Zion

  652. shout aloud

  653. O daughter of Jerusalem

  654. behold

  655. your king is coming to you

  656. righteous

  657. and having salvation

  658. is he

  659. humble

  660. and mounted

  661. on a donkey

  662. on a colt

  663. the foal

  664. of a donkey

  665. this is fulfillment

  666. of the prophecies

  667. Jesus

  668. intentionally moves

  669. towards this

  670. he intentionally

  671. arranges it

  672. in order that

  673. he might fulfill

  674. what the prophets

  675. had spoken

  676. there's no coincidence

  677. here

  678. this is

  679. premeditated

  680. careful planning

  681. on the part

  682. of the Lord

  683. another thing

  684. that contributes

  685. to this idea

  686. is the fact

  687. that

  688. this is different

  689. from how Jesus

  690. typically operated

  691. in Jerusalem

  692. his attendance

  693. at the various

  694. festivals and feasts

  695. was always

  696. greatly anticipated

  697. by the people

  698. and if you read

  699. through the gospels

  700. you'll find that

  701. this is not normal

  702. for Jesus

  703. Jesus often

  704. arrived late

  705. he often arrived

  706. in relative secrecy

  707. in order that

  708. he might prevent

  709. this very thing

  710. from happening

  711. we even read

  712. of other times

  713. in his ministry

  714. where the crowd

  715. so impressed

  716. so moved

  717. by his power

  718. sought to make

  719. him a king

  720. by force

  721. we find it

  722. in John 6

  723. in particular

  724. the feeding

  725. of the 5,000

  726. what do the people

  727. do?

  728. they move

  729. in order that

  730. they might make

  731. him a king

  732. by force

  733. and what does

  734. Jesus repeatedly

  735. do in those moments?

  736. he escapes

  737. he gets out of there

  738. it's not time

  739. his hour has not come

  740. this is not normal

  741. for Jesus

  742. this isn't glory

  743. seeking

  744. in a selfish sense

  745. in a human

  746. sinful sense

  747. at this point

  748. no this is

  749. deliberate action

  750. on Jesus' part

  751. held off

  752. for this particular

  753. moment

  754. in order that

  755. he might communicate

  756. a specific thing

  757. he was unequivocally

  758. identifying himself

  759. in this moment

  760. as the Messiah

  761. King

  762. that's its purpose

  763. it was deliberate

  764. intentional

  765. premeditated

  766. Jesus in this act

  767. fulfilling the scripture

  768. says

  769. I am him

  770. but the scene

  771. isn't only deliberate

  772. we find that the scene

  773. is also quite dramatic

  774. isn't it?

  775. verse 35

  776. and they brought it

  777. to Jesus

  778. and throwing their

  779. cloaks on the colt

  780. they set Jesus

  781. on it

  782. and as he rode along

  783. they spread their

  784. cloaks on the road

  785. and as he was

  786. drawing near

  787. already on the way

  788. down the Mount

  789. of Olives

  790. the whole multitude

  791. of his disciples

  792. began to rejoice

  793. and to praise God

  794. with a loud voice

  795. notice the singular

  796. tense there

  797. multitudes of people

  798. multitude typically

  799. means it's not even

  800. worth bothering

  801. trying to count

  802. there's so many

  803. multitude of people

  804. but what are they

  805. shouting and singing?

  806. with one voice

  807. with unity of voice

  808. in unison together

  809. an amazing moment

  810. why are they shouting?

  811. verse 37

  812. for all the mighty works

  813. that they had seen

  814. what were they saying?

  815. blessed is the king

  816. who comes in the name

  817. of the Lord

  818. peace in heaven

  819. and glory in the highest

  820. dramatic

  821. so word quickly spreads

  822. that Jesus

  823. was on his way

  824. as he gets closer

  825. to the city

  826. the crowd

  827. grows

  828. larger and larger

  829. but the drama

  830. comes from what

  831. the people did

  832. as Jesus passed by

  833. we're told here

  834. that they lined

  835. the streets

  836. with their clothes

  837. their cloaks

  838. they cast them down

  839. on the road

  840. as if to roll out

  841. something of a red carpet

  842. for the Lord

  843. but then Matthew

  844. Mark and John

  845. add something

  846. that Luke does not include

  847. which is that

  848. they were also

  849. laying down palm branches

  850. which is why we

  851. refer to this

  852. as Palm Sunday

  853. what is the significance

  854. of that?

  855. it's depicting

  856. a royal procession

  857. it's implying

  858. triumph

  859. over their enemies

  860. those of you

  861. who like

  862. the Hunger Games

  863. will remember

  864. the Mockingjay

  865. being an emblem

  866. of revolution

  867. in the fictional

  868. country of Panem

  869. in the similar sense

  870. the palm branch

  871. was a symbol

  872. it was an emblem

  873. of salvation

  874. and deliverance

  875. to first century Jews

  876. who were crushed

  877. beneath the oppressive

  878. rule of the Roman Empire

  879. it dates back

  880. to the second

  881. Maccabean revolt

  882. just two centuries

  883. before the time

  884. of Jesus

  885. they began to print

  886. them even on coins

  887. these palm branches

  888. it was a symbol

  889. it was an emblem

  890. of revolution

  891. against Rome

  892. an emblem

  893. of salvation

  894. from God

  895. against their enemies

  896. and as Jesus

  897. rides into the city

  898. from the Mount

  899. of Olives

  900. they roll out

  901. the red carpet

  902. so to speak

  903. they throw down

  904. the palm branches

  905. why?

  906. they're shouting

  907. for salvation

  908. he has come

  909. to deliver us

  910. finally

  911. from our enemies

  912. there's also

  913. drama

  914. in what they said

  915. quoting Psalm 118

  916. which was common

  917. at this festival

  918. in particular

  919. the people shouted

  920. praises to God

  921. declaring that

  922. Jesus

  923. was the promised one

  924. sent from God

  925. to bring them peace

  926. Hosanna

  927. they shouted

  928. which just means

  929. save us Lord

  930. blessed is your king

  931. who has come

  932. what is this?

  933. the people

  934. believing Jesus

  935. to be that king

  936. greeted him

  937. with emblems

  938. of deliverance

  939. and shouts

  940. of triumph

  941. for God's salvation

  942. and indeed

  943. they had the right

  944. person

  945. and their concept

  946. of what this person

  947. would do

  948. was not far off

  949. but their expectations

  950. of how he would

  951. fulfill his mission

  952. were completely wrong

  953. by week's end

  954. some of the people

  955. in this crowd

  956. will turn against him

  957. turning their shouts

  958. of Hosanna

  959. into shouts

  960. of crucify

  961. others will simply

  962. be crushed

  963. under the discouragement

  964. of another Messiah

  965. who has failed

  966. to do what they hoped

  967. he would do

  968. and would abandon hope

  969. and go home

  970. such is always the case

  971. for those

  972. whose expectations

  973. of Jesus

  974. are skewed

  975. people come to Jesus

  976. for all kinds of reasons

  977. they come hoping

  978. that it will bring

  979. some kind of prosperity

  980. to their lives

  981. they come hoping

  982. that it will bring

  983. some type of comfort

  984. or reassurance

  985. to their anxieties

  986. that they feel

  987. there's all kinds of reasons

  988. for people to come to Jesus

  989. but if you're not coming

  990. to Jesus

  991. for who he is

  992. and for the purpose

  993. for which he came

  994. to fulfill

  995. you're ultimately

  996. going to walk away

  997. disappointed

  998. even angry

  999. ready to completely

  1000. turn against him

  1001. but their misunderstanding

  1002. here

  1003. it doesn't take away

  1004. from the significance

  1005. of the moment

  1006. what they did

  1007. was right

  1008. what they did

  1009. was necessary

  1010. they just didn't realize

  1011. how right it was

  1012. and how necessary

  1013. it was

  1014. it's deliberate

  1015. it's dramatic

  1016. thirdly

  1017. it's divinely determined

  1018. the scene

  1019. is divinely determined

  1020. look at verses

  1021. 39 and 40

  1022. the Pharisees

1023. always tend to pop up

  1024. don't they

  1025. and some of them

  1026. did here

  1027. they're in every crowd

  1028. I suppose

1029. and some of the Pharisees

  1030. said

  1031. teacher

  1032. rebuke your disciples

  1033. and he answered

  1034. I tell you

  1035. if these were silent

  1036. the very stones

  1037. would cry out

  1038. now unsurprisingly

  1039. the Pharisees

  1040. take notice

  1041. of the commotion

  1042. and they move

  1043. to rebuke the Lord

  1044. now perhaps

  1045. their concern

  1046. is simply that

  1047. this is a lot

  1048. of commotion

  1049. this is loud

  1050. these are shouts

  1051. of kingship

  1052. have they forgotten

  1053. that we are

  1054. occupied

  1055. by Rome

  1056. that there's a

  1057. proconsulate

  1058. from Rome

  1059. who is here

  1060. there is a garrison

  1061. here

  1062. perhaps their concern

  1063. is that Rome

  1064. is going to

  1065. the Romans

  1066. are going to get

  1067. their attention

1068. is going to be sparked

  1069. they're going to come

  1070. they're going to think

1071. that this is some sort

  1072. of insurrection

  1073. that would be good

  1074. for no one

  1075. and so perhaps

  1076. the Pharisees

  1077. are just bringing

  1078. Jesus' attention

  1079. to that

  1080. I don't know

  1081. I think maybe

  1082. there's more to it

  1083. than that

  1084. I think they

  1085. recognized

  1086. exactly what was

  1087. happening

  1088. I think they

  1089. understood

  1090. they recognized

  1091. Jesus' actions

  1092. as a deliberate

  1093. statement

  1094. of his

  1095. messianic

  1096. identity

  1097. and they

  1098. demanded

  1099. in this moment

  1100. that he set

  1101. the record

  1102. straight publicly

  1103. hey

  1104. teacher

  1105. while all these

  1106. people are around

  1107. saying that you're

  1108. Messiah

  1109. why don't you

  1110. just go ahead

  1111. and correct them

  1112. before things

  1113. get out of hand

  1114. and we must

  1115. appreciate Jesus'

  1116. answer in verse

  1117. 40

  1118. rather than

  1119. quiet the crowd

  1120. or argue

  1121. with his

  1122. detractors

  1123. Jesus pointed

  1124. to the purposes

  1125. of God

  1126. it was God's

  1127. determined plan

  1128. to send his

  1129. son for the

  1130. purpose of our

  1131. salvation

  1132. and that truth

  1133. would not be

  1134. silenced

  1135. even if every

  1136. person on the

  1137. road that day

  1138. suddenly became

  1139. mute

  1140. such is God's

  1141. truth that if

  1142. every person

  1143. refused to speak

  1144. it

  1145. the rocks

  1146. themselves

  1147. would cry out

  1148. the glory

  1149. of God

  1150. and of our

  1151. Lord and Savior

  1152. Jesus Christ

  1153. it cannot be

  1154. stopped

  1155. it's

  1156. definely

  1157. determined

  1158. if we won't

  1159. do it

  1160. God will use

  1161. another portion

  1162. of his

  1163. creation

  1164. to do it

  1165. the world

  1166. can silence

  1167. God's people

  1168. it can never

  1169. silence God

  1170. the heavens

  1171. declare the

  1172. glory of God

  1173. wrote David

  1174. no power

  1175. of hell

  1176. no scheme

  1177. of man

  1178. will ever

  1179. overcome

  1180. what God

  1181. has determined

  1182. to do

  1183. the Pharisees

  1184. say teacher

  1185. do something

  1186. about this

  1187. he doesn't

  1188. argue with them

  1189. he doesn't

  1190. silence the

  1191. crowd

  1192. he just says

  1193. this is God's

  1194. doing

  1195. it's God's

  1196. doing

  1197. to quote

  1198. Psalm 118

  1199. again

  1200. it's the Lord's

  1201. doing

  1202. it's marvelous

  1203. in our eyes

  1204. even if they

  1205. stop the rocks

  1206. will cry out

  1207. you can't

  1208. stop what

  1209. God is doing

  1210. to save

  1211. his people

  1212. Jesus

  1213. says

  1214. here

  1215. amazing

  1216. that's

  1217. scene

  1218. number one

  1219. riding down

  1220. the road

  1221. we're gonna

  1222. pull the lever

  1223. now we're gonna

  1224. move to

  1225. scene number

  1226. two

  1227. we might call

  1228. this one

  1229. weeping at

  1230. the wall

  1231. weeping at

  1232. the wall

  1233. look at

  1234. verse 41

  1235. and when he

  1236. drew near

  1237. and saw

  1238. the city

  1239. he wept

  1240. over it

  1241. now I

  1242. can't imagine

  1243. that if this

  1244. was your first

  1245. time coming

  1246. to this chapter

  1247. and you

  1248. just got

  1249. through this

  1250. celebratory

  1251. event that

  1252. you would

  1253. have expected

  1254. that the

  1255. next thing

  1256. to happen

  1257. would be

  1258. Jesus

  1259. weeping

  1260. and yet

  1261. that's what

  1262. happens

  1263. indeed

  1264. it differs

  1265. greatly from

  1266. the first

  1267. scene

  1268. the setting

  1269. is essentially

  1270. the same

  1271. only Jesus

  1272. is a little

  1273. closer to

  1274. the city

  1275. perhaps as

  1276. he's come

  1277. down from

  1278. the Mount

  1279. of Olives

  1280. if you're

  1281. familiar at

  1282. all with

  1283. the geography

  1284. of that

  1285. he would

  1286. have been

  1287. viewing the

  1288. panorama

  1289. of the

  1290. east side

  1291. of the

  1292. wall of

  1293. Jerusalem

  1294. the expanse

  1295. of the

  1296. city

  1297. comes into

  1298. his view

  1299. the contrast

  1300. between this

  1301. and the

  1302. first scene

  1303. though is

  1304. that

  1305. as the

  1306. crowd

  1307. celebrates

  1308. his arrival

  1309. the Lord

  1310. laments

  1311. traveling over

  1312. the Mount

  1313. descending

  1314. toward the

  1315. eastern gate

  1316. of Jerusalem

  1317. Jesus

  1318. suddenly

  1319. burst into

  1320. tears

  1321. tears

  1322. this

  1323. is not

  1324. merely

  1325. the

  1326. swelling

  1327. of

  1328. your

  1329. eyes

  1330. when

  1331. you're

  1332. somewhat

  1333. moved

  1334. emotionally

  1335. this is

  1336. a

  1337. likely

  1338. loud

  1339. weeping

  1340. wailing

  1341. kind of

  1342. moment

  1343. for the

  1344. Lord

  1345. based on

  1346. the

  1347. language

  1348. that's

  1349. used

  1350. here

  1351. and they

  1352. weren't

  1353. tears

  1354. of joy

  1355. over his

  1356. reception

  1357. by the

  1358. people

  1359. they were

  1360. tears

  1361. of sorrow

  1362. over his

  1363. rejection

  1364. by the

  1365. people

  1366. seems

  1367. backward

  1368. doesn't

  1369. it

  1370. as the

  1371. people

  1372. shout

  1373. Jesus

  1374. weeps

  1375. but why

  1376. well the

  1377. answer is

  1378. in his

  1379. prophetic

  1380. lament

  1381. look at

  1382. verses

  1383. 43 and

  1384. 44

  1385. Jesus

  1386. says

  1387. the days

  1388. will come

  1389. upon you

  1390. he's

  1391. speaking

  1392. he's

  1393. anthropomorphizing

  1394. the city

  1395. of Jerusalem

  1396. here is what

  1397. he's doing

  1398. he's referring

  1399. to the city

  1400. as he looks

  1401. at the city

  1402. and he says

  1403. the days

  1404. will come

  1405. upon you

  1406. when your

  1407. enemies

  1408. will set

  1409. up a

  1410. barricade

  1411. around

  1412. you

  1413. they

  1414. will

  1415. surround

  1416. you

  1417. they

  1418. will

  1419. hem

  1420. you

  1421. in

  1422. on

  1423. every

  1424. side

  1425. and

  1426. they

  1427. will tear

  1428. you

  1429. down

  1430. to the

  1431. ground

  1432. you

  1433. and your

  1434. children

  1435. within

  1436. you

  1437. they

  1438. will

  1439. not

  1440. leave

  1441. one

  1442. stone

  1443. upon

  1444. another

  1445. in

  1446. you

  1447. because

  1448. you

  1449. did

  1450. not

  1451. know

  1452. the

  1453. time

  1454. of

  1455. your

  1456. visitation

  1457. now

  1458. the

  1459. shouting

  1460. crowds

  1461. we've

  1462. already

  1463. said

  1464. they

  1465. believe

  1466. Jesus

  1467. was

  1468. there

  1469. to

  1470. free

  1471. them

  1472. from

  1473. Rome

  1474. and

  1475. yet

  1476. as

  1477. soon

  1478. as

  1479. Jesus

  1480. gets

  1481. to

  1482. the

  1483. city

  1484. he

  1485. prophesies

  1486. a

  1487. coming

  1488. day

  1489. when

  1490. Jerusalem

  1491. would

  1492. endure

  1493. a

  1494. terrible

  1495. fate

  1496. at

  1497. the

  1498. hands

  1499. of

  1500. Rome

  1501. already

  1502. cluing

  1503. us

  1504. in

  1505. on

  1506. the

  1507. fact

  1508. that

  1509. what

  1510. he

  1511. actually

  1512. came

  1513. to

  1514. do

  1515. was

  1516. quite

  1517. different

  1518. than

  1519. what

  1520. any

  1521. of

  1522. them

  1523. expected

  1524. him

  1525. to

  1526. do

  1527. his

  1528. mission

  1529. was

  1530. not

  1531. at

  1532. all

  1533. what

  1534. they

  1535. wanted

  1536. which

  1537. is

  1538. why

  1539. many

  1540. of

  1541. them

  1542. would

  1543. ultimately

  1544. turn

  1545. against

  1546. him

  1547. by

  1548. weeks

  1549. end

  1550. of

  1551. course

  1552. what

  1553. just

  1554. a

  1555. few

  1556. years

  1557. later

  1558. the

  1559. Roman

  1560. general

  1561. Titus

  1562. raised

  1563. the

  1564. city

  1565. including

  1566. the

  1567. temple

  1568. complex

  1569. itself

  1570. to

  1571. the

  1572. ground

  1573. but

  1574. don't

  1575. misunderstand

  1576. the

  1577. weeping

  1578. here

  1579. Jesus

  1580. tears

  1581. did not

  1582. flow

  1583. out of

  1584. concern

  1585. for

  1586. brick

  1587. and

  1588. mortar

  1589. he

  1590. wept

  1591. over

  1592. the

  1593. souls

  1594. of

  1595. the

  1596. people

  1597. who

  1598. would

  1599. continue

  1600. to

  1601. reject

  1602. his

  1603. rule

  1604. and

  1605. ultimately

  1606. suffer

  1607. the

  1608. wrath

  1609. of

  1610. God

  1611. as

  1612. a

  1613. result

  1614. that's

  1615. why

  1616. he's

  1617. weeping

  1618. doesn't

  1619. care

  1620. about

  1621. a

  1622. wall

  1623. he'd

  1624. come

  1625. to

  1626. replace

  1627. the

  1628. temple

  1629. he

  1630. doesn't

  1631. really

  1632. care

  1633. about

  1634. that

  1635. temple

  1636. what

  1637. is

  1638. he

  1639. weeping

  1640. over

  1641. it's

  1642. the

  1643. souls

  1644. of

  1645. the

  1646. people

  1647. how

  1648. do

  1649. we

  1650. know

  1651. well

  1652. verse

  1653. 42

  1654. here's

  1655. what

  1656. he

  1657. said

  1658. would

  1659. that

  1660. you

  1661. even

  1662. you

  1663. had

  1664. known

  1665. on

  1666. this

  1667. day

  1668. the

  1669. things

  1670. that

  1671. make

  1672. for

  1673. peace

  1674. but

  1675. now

  1676. they

  1677. are

  1678. hidden

  1679. from

  1680. your

  1681. eyes

  1682. and

  1683. as

  1684. a

  1685. result

  1686. of

  1687. that

  1688. their

  1689. blindness

  1690. their

  1691. spiritual

  1692. blindness

  1693. this

  1694. destruction

  1695. would

  1696. come

  1697. peace

  1698. the

  1699. people

  1700. thought

  1701. of

  1702. peace

  1703. only

  1704. in

  1705. terms

  1706. of

  1707. their

  1708. relationship

  1709. with

  1710. Rome

  1711. Jesus

  1712. spoke

  1713. of

  1714. peace

  1715. in

  1716. terms

  1717. of

  1718. their

  1719. relationship

  1720. to

  1721. God

  1722. peace

  1723. was

  1724. the

  1725. purpose

  1726. of

  1727. his

  1728. incarnation

  1729. peace

  1730. was

  1731. the

  1732. purpose

  1733. of

  1734. his

  1735. ministry

  1736. peace

  1737. was

  1738. the

  1739. purpose

  1740. of

  1741. his

  1742. crucifixion

  1743. and his

  1744. resurrection

  1745. and his

  1746. ascension

  1747. peace

  1748. between

  1749. God

  1750. and man

  1751. it would

  1752. be

  1753. achieved

  1754. through

  1755. an

  1756. atonement

  1757. that he

  1758. would

  1759. make

  1760. for

  1761. sin

  1762. he would

  1763. do it

  1764. on a

  1765. cross

  1766. just days

  1767. after this

  1768. moment

  1769. Jesus

  1770. the

  1771. sinless

  1772. son

  1773. of

  1774. God

  1775. bore

  1776. the

  1777. wrath

  1778. of

  1779. God

  1780. in

  1781. the

  1782. place

  1783. of

  1784. sinners

  1785. who

  1786. by

  1787. nature

  1788. hate

  1789. him

  1790. and in

  1791. taking

  1792. our

  1793. sins

  1794. Jesus

  1795. then

  1796. imputes

  1797. he credits

  1798. to us

  1799. his

  1800. righteousness

  1801. righteousness

  1802. reconciling

  1803. man

  1804. with

  1805. God

  1806. peace

  1807. between

  1808. God

  1809. and those

  1810. who have

  1811. rebelled

  1812. against

  1813. him

  1814. peace

  1815. Jesus

  1816. speaks

  1817. of

  1818. not

  1819. peace

  1820. with

  1821. Rome

  1822. peace

  1823. with

  1824. God

  1825. was

  1826. he

  1827. Messiah

  1828. yes

  1829. had

  1830. he

  1831. come

  1832. to

  1833. deliver

  1834. them

  1835. during

  1836. this

  1837. Passover

  1838. yes

  1839. was

  1840. it

  1841. to

  1842. bring

  1843. peace

  1844. with

  1845. Rome

  1846. no

  1847. it

  1848. was

  1849. to

  1850. bring

  1851. a

  1852. greater

  1853. peace

  1854. the

  1855. things

  1856. that

  1857. make

  1858. for

  1859. peace

  1860. what

  1861. Jesus

  1862. refers

  1863. to

  1864. in

  1865. verse

  1866. 42

  1867. are

  1868. simply

  1869. repentance

  1870. toward

  1871. God

  1872. and

  1873. faith

  1874. in

  1875. the

  1876. Lord

  1877. Jesus

  1878. Christ

  1879. those

  1880. are

  1881. the

  1882. things

  1883. that

  1884. make

  1885. for

  1886. peace

  1887. he

  1888. would

  1889. supply

  1890. the

  1891. peace

  1892. the

  1893. things

  1894. that

  1895. make

  1896. for

  1897. peace

  1898. are

  1899. repentance

  1900. and

  1901. faith

  1902. and

  1903. this

  1904. was

  1905. not

  1906. a

  1907. new

  1908. message

  1909. from

  1910. Jesus

  1911. this

  1912. is

  1913. what

  1914. he

  1915. had

  1916. preached

  1917. from

  1918. the

  1919. very

  1920. beginning

  1921. Mark

  1922. tells

  1923. us

  1924. in

  1925. Mark

  1926. Jesus

  1927. came

  1928. into

  1929. Galilee

  1930. proclaiming

  1931. the gospel

  1932. of God

  1933. saying

  1934. the time

  1935. is fulfilled

  1936. the kingdom

  1937. of God

  1938. is at

  1939. hand

  1940. therefore

  1941. repent

  1942. and believe

  1943. in the

  1944. gospel

  1945. what are the

  1946. things that

  1947. make for

  1948. peace

  1949. repentance

  1950. and faith

  1951. repentance

  1952. toward

  1953. God

  1954. faith

  1955. in his

  1956. son

  1957. who has

  1958. achieved

  1959. the peace

  1960. for

  1961. us

  1962. Jesus

  1963. wept

  1964. because

  1965. on the

  1966. whole

  1967. the

  1968. people

  1969. remained

  1970. in

  1971. darkness

  1972. they

  1973. were

  1974. blind

  1975. to

  1976. the

  1977. things

  1978. that

  1979. make

  1980. for

  1981. peace

  1982. they

  1983. refused

  1984. repentance

  1985. they

  1986. refused

  1987. faith

  1988. unless

  1989. it was

  1990. convenient

  1991. but a

  1992. convenient

  1993. faith

  1994. is never

  1995. a

  1996. proper

  1997. faith

  1998. the

  1999. destruction

  2000. of

  2001. Jerusalem

  2002. was

  2003. merely

  2004. an

  2005. emblem

  2006. of

  2007. their

  2008. continued

  2009. rejection

  2010. and upon

  2011. entering

  2012. the

  2013. city

  2014. their

  2015. lostness

  2016. brought

  2017. Jesus

  2018. tremendous

  2019. grief

  2020. if in

  2021. scene

  2022. one

  2023. Jesus

  2024. is the

  2025. humble

  2026. king

  2027. in

  2028. scene

  2029. two

  2030. he

  2031. is the

  2032. weeping

  2033. prophet

  2034. but there's

  2035. one more

  2036. scene

  2037. we'll pull

  2038. the lever

  2039. again

  2040. the third

  2041. scene

  2042. we might

  2043. call it

  2044. cleansing

  2045. the

  2046. corruption

  2047. cleansing

  2048. the

  2049. corruption

  2050. now

  2051. in this

  2052. third

  2053. and

  2054. final

  2055. picture

  2056. the

  2057. entire

  2058. scene

  2059. changes

  2060. he's

  2061. not

  2062. outside

  2063. the

  2064. city

  2065. anymore

  2066. there's

  2067. no

  2068. donkey

  2069. there's

  2070. no

  2071. shouts

  2072. no palm

  2073. branches

  2074. all of

  2075. it's

  2076. different

  2077. he's

  2078. not

  2079. weeping

  2080. over

  2081. the

  2082. unrepentant

  2083. holy

  2084. city

  2085. of

  2086. Jerusalem

  2087. anymore

  2088. that

  2089. moment

  2090. has

  2091. now

  2092. passed

  2093. in

  2094. this

  2095. picture

  2096. Jesus

  2097. is

  2098. actually

  2099. in

  2100. the

  2101. temple

  2102. complex

  2103. and

  2104. he's

  2105. cleaning

  2106. out

  2107. corruption

  2108. as

  2109. he

  2110. teaches

  2111. truth

  2112. verse

  2113. 45

  2114. and

  2115. he

  2116. entered

  2117. the

  2118. temple

  2119. and

  2120. began

  2121. to

  2122. drive

  2123. out

  2124. those

  2125. who

  2126. sold

  2127. saying

  2128. to

  2129. them

  2130. it

  2131. is

  2132. written

  2133. my

  2134. house

  2135. shall

  2136. be a

  2137. house

  2138. of

  2139. prayer

  2140. but

  2141. you

  2142. have

  2143. made

  2144. it

  2145. a

  2146. den

  2147. of

  2148. robbers

  2149. the

  2150. first

  2151. half

  2152. of

  2153. that

  2154. is

  2155. a

  2156. quote

  2157. from

  2158. Isaiah

  2159. the

  2160. second

  2161. half

  2162. is

  2163. a

  2164. quote

  2165. from

  2166. Jeremiah

  2167. we'll

  2168. get

  2169. to

  2170. that

  2171. in

  2172. a

  2173. second

  2174. but

  2175. notice

  2176. what

  2177. he

  2178. clears

  2179. the

  2180. corruption

  2181. to

  2182. do

  2183. 47

  2184. and

  2185. he

  2186. was

  2187. he

  2188. gets

  2189. out

  2190. the

  2191. dross

  2192. so

  2193. that

  2194. he

  2195. can

  2196. do

  2197. the

  2198. work

  2199. of

  2200. the

  2201. word

  2202. and

  2203. what's

  2204. the

  2205. response

  2206. the

  2207. chief

  2208. priest

  2209. and

  2210. the

  2211. scribes

  2212. and

  2213. the

  2214. principal

  2215. men

  2216. of

  2217. the

  2218. people

  2219. were

  2220. seeking

  2221. to

  2222. destroy

  2223. him

  2224. but

  2225. they

  2226. couldn't

  2227. find

  2228. anything

  2229. they

  2230. couldn't

  2231. find

  2232. any

  2233. way

  2234. to

  2235. destroy

  2236. him

  2237. because

  2238. all

  2239. the

  2240. people

  2241. were

  2242. hanging

  2243. on

  2244. his

  2245. words

  2246. I

  2247. like

  2248. this

  2249. scene

  2250. the

  2251. final

  2252. image

  2253. we

  2254. find

  2255. Jesus

  2256. acting

  2257. as

  2258. the

  2259. faithful

  2260. priest

  2261. he's

  2262. a

  2263. humble

  2264. king

  2265. he's

  2266. a

  2267. weeping

  2268. prophet

  2269. he's

  2270. a

  2271. faithful

  2272. priest

  2273. and

  2274. as

  2275. our

  2276. faithful

  2277. priest

  2278. he is

  2279. purifying

  2280. the

  2281. people's

  2282. worship

  2283. and

  2284. he's

  2285. instructing

  2286. them

  2287. with

  2288. God's

  2289. truth

  2290. both

  2291. responsibilities

  2292. were

  2293. crucial

  2294. to

  2295. the

  2296. priesthood

  2297. but

  2298. as

  2299. you

  2300. can

  2301. see

  2302. corruption

  2303. had

  2304. pervaded

  2305. the

  2306. hearts

  2307. of

  2308. the

  2309. spiritual

  2310. leaders

  2311. here

  2312. causing

  2313. the

  2314. people

  2315. to

  2316. forsake

  2317. a

  2318. genuine

  2319. spirit

  2320. of

  2321. worship

  2322. and

  2323. suffer

  2324. serious

  2325. spiritual

  2326. abuse

  2327. the

  2328. abuse

  2329. came

  2330. from

  2331. the

  2332. sellers

  2333. and

  2334. the

  2335. money

  2336. changers

  2337. the

  2338. sellers

  2339. peddled

  2340. animals

  2341. these

  2342. animals

  2343. were

  2344. used

  2345. for

  2346. the

  2347. festal

  2348. sacrifices

  2349. a

  2350. traveler

  2351. one

  2352. such

  2353. as

  2354. Jesus

  2355. traveling

  2356. from

  2357. Galilee

  2358. would

  2359. not

  2360. bring

  2361. a

  2362. lamb

  2363. with

  2364. him

  2365. he

  2366. would

  2367. go

  2368. to

  2369. the

  2370. temple

  2371. complex

  2372. or

  2373. somewhere

  2374. near

  2375. the

  2376. temple

  2377. complex

  2378. and

  2379. he

  2380. would

  2381. purchase

  2382. one

  2383. a

  2384. blemish

  2385. one

  2386. without

  2387. blemish

  2388. one

  2389. suitable

  2390. for

  2391. the

  2392. sacrifices

  2393. and that's

  2394. what these

  2395. sellers

  2396. were doing

  2397. but the

  2398. animals

  2399. were sold

  2400. at

  2401. exorbitant

  2402. markups

  2403. so that

  2404. the

  2405. merchants

  2406. were

  2407. profiting

  2408. off of

  2409. the

  2410. people's

  2411. worship

  2412. knowing

  2413. that they

  2414. had no

  2415. option

  2416. but to

  2417. purchase

  2418. their

  2419. animals

  2420. if they

  2421. were going

  2422. to do

  2423. what God

  2424. had instructed

  2425. them to

  2426. do

  2427. you see

  2428. the

  2429. corruption

  2430. in that

  2431. the

  2432. money

  2433. changers

  2434. did a

  2435. different

  2436. thing

  2437. they provided

  2438. a service

  2439. to those

  2440. who had to

  2441. pay the

  2442. temple tax

  2443. there was a

  2444. certain kind

  2445. of currency

  2446. that had to be

  2447. used for this

  2448. and it was a

  2449. different currency

  2450. than what was

  2451. used in everyday

  2452. trading

  2453. so what the

  2454. merchants and

  2455. money changers

  2456. would do

  2457. is they would

  2458. set up their

  2459. booths so that

  2460. someone who had to

  2461. pay the temple tax

2462. would have to come in

  2463. and they'd give

  2464. maybe some

  2465. minas or maybe

  2466. they'd give

  2467. some denarii

  2468. and in exchange

  2469. they would receive

  2470. the proper coins

  2471. that they would have

  2472. to give for the

  2473. temple tax

  2474. so what did

  2475. the money changers

  2476. do

  2477. well they charged

  2478. incredible fees

  2479. for this

  2480. because if you're

  2481. going to obey

  2482. the lord

  2483. you had no

  2484. choice but to

  2485. exchange with

  2486. them and they

  2487. set the exchange

  2488. rates

  2489. and they set

  2490. them high

  2491. abusing the

  2492. people

  2493. padding their

  2494. pockets

  2495. the leading

  2496. priests then

  2497. who were

  2498. responsible for

  2499. all of this

  2500. allowed the

  2501. people to be

  2502. abused so that

  2503. they could line

  2504. their own

  2505. pockets

  2506. and on top of

  2507. all of that

  2508. this was all

  2509. taking place

  2510. inside the

  2511. gentile court

  2512. which was

  2513. meant to be

  2514. a place for

  2515. non-jews to

  2516. worship and to

  2517. hear the truth

  2518. of god

  2519. and jesus as he

  2520. had done on a

  2521. previous occasion

  2522. comes in

  2523. sees the

  2524. corruption

  2525. and as the

  2526. faithful priest

  2527. does what all

  2528. of the other

  2529. priesthood were

  2530. afraid to do

  2531. or unwilling to

  2532. do he drives

  2533. out the

  2534. animals

  2535. he drives out

  2536. the merchants

  2537. he turns over

  2538. the money

  2539. changing

  2540. tables

  2541. he purifies

  2542. the corruption

  2543. zealous for

  2544. true worship

  2545. the lord

  2546. drives out

  2547. those who

  2548. had

  2549. corrupted it

  2550. pronounces the

  2551. judgment of

  2552. god

  2553. on those who

  2554. commit such

  2555. profane acts

  2556. in relationship

  2557. to worship

  2558. now i'll leave it

2559. to you to dig in

  2560. further into the

  2561. old testament

  2562. quotations here

  2563. but let me just

  2564. mention the

  2565. jeremiah quotation

  2566. it's jeremiah

    Jeremiah 7 chapter mention

  2567. chapter 7

  2568. and verse 11

  2569. if you want to

  2570. write that down

  2571. in your margins

  2572. it's the second

  2573. half of what

  2574. jesus says here

  2575. you have made it

  2576. a den of robbers

  2577. that verse in

  2578. jeremiah's

  2579. prophecy it

  2580. it comes in the

  2581. context context

  2582. of god's wrath

  2583. being poured out

  2584. against those

  2585. who went through

  2586. the rituals of

  2587. worship

  2588. but profaned

  2589. god's house

  2590. in the process

  2591. so this was no

  2592. new thing

  2593. in fact over and

  2594. over in the old

  2595. testament we find

  2596. this very thing

  2597. happening again

  2598. and again with

  2599. god's people

  2600. they do the

  2601. sacrifice they do

  2602. the letter of the

2603. law but they do a

  2604. lot to profane that

  2605. as well over and

  2606. over god says your

  2607. lips praise me but

  2608. your heart is far

  2609. from me

  2610. jesus quotes one of

  2611. those passages here

  2612. a passage of

  2613. judgment a passage

  2614. of wrath

  2615. how foolish we are

  2616. to think that

  2617. merely associating

  2618. with the things of

  2619. god makes us safe

  2620. from god

  2621. your attendance here

  2622. today does not make

  2623. you safe from god

  2624. your participation

  2625. in whatever

  2626. christian ritual we

  2627. may put forward

  2628. the celebration of

  2629. palm sunday or

  2630. perhaps baptism or

  2631. communion or

  2632. whatever else we

  2633. may do

  2634. those things do

  2635. not make you safe

  2636. from god

  2637. just as jesus

  2638. purged the temple

  2639. of those who

  2640. profaned it so

  2641. will he one day

  2642. purge his church

  2643. and those who

  2644. only pretend to

  2645. know and believe

  2646. god will be driven

  2647. from his presence

  2648. into eternal hell

  2649. but the scene isn't

  2650. only about corruption

  2651. that's the good part

  2652. here why is jesus

  2653. cleansing the

  2654. corruption well he's

  2655. zealous for the

  2656. true worship

  2657. isn't he

  2658. but he's clearing

  2659. out the way so

  2660. that he might do

  2661. what a faithful

  2662. priest was meant

  2663. to do

  2664. teach the bible

  2665. teach the gospel

  2666. proclaim the good

  2667. news and the law

  2668. of god

  2669. to the people

  2670. and that's exactly

  2671. what he does

  2672. he teaches truth

  2673. jesus

  2674. jesus our faithful

  2675. priest proclaims

  2676. god's word

  2677. to the disdain

  2678. of his enemies

  2679. who did not

  2680. appreciate the

  2681. things that he

  2682. said

  2683. but to the

  2684. building up of

  2685. his people

  2686. such zealousness

  2687. for purity of

  2688. worship and

  2689. proclamation of

  2690. truth that ought to

  2691. be characteristic of

  2692. all those who

  2693. follow in the

  2694. footsteps of

  2695. jesus

  2696. but the spiritual

  2697. leaders of the

  2698. day only angered

  2699. them

  2700. sets the stage

  2701. for a midnight

  2702. trial murderous

  2703. execution just a

  2704. few days later

  2705. jesus came to be

  2706. what those leaders

  2707. were meant to be

  2708. and never were

  2709. never could be

  2710. he is our

  2711. faithful

  2712. priest

  2713. now after we've

  2714. looked at the

  2715. three scenes we've

  2716. gone through our

  2717. bible viewfinder what

  2718. do we see

  2719. well there's a lot

  2720. that we might see

2721. but we see a king

  2722. unlike any the

  2723. world has ever

  2724. known

  2725. isn't that why we

  2726. would celebrate

  2727. something like

  2728. palm sunday

  2729. isn't that the

  2730. main idea here

  2731. here is our king

  2732. and he's different

  2733. than anything we've

  2734. ever expected

  2735. he's certainly

  2736. different than

  2737. anything we've

  2738. seen before

2739. in each one of the

  2740. pictures there's

  2741. this juxtaposition

  2742. of character

  2743. that is unusual

  2744. in scene one you

  2745. have royalty

  2746. paired with

  2747. humility

  2748. in scene two

  2749. you have judgment

  2750. expressed with

  2751. compassion

  2752. and in scene three

  2753. we find authority

  2754. paired with meekness

  2755. gentleness

  2756. and what's the

  2757. point of it all

  2758. well Luke told us

  2759. it's to give us

  2760. certainty of the

  2761. fact that Jesus

  2762. of Nazareth

  2763. truly is the

  2764. Christ and the

  2765. son of God

  2766. he indeed is our

  2767. messiah king

  2768. who won our

  2769. eternal salvation

  2770. through his death

  2771. and resurrection

  2772. salvation

  2773. and if you will

  2774. only open your

  2775. eyes to the

  2776. things that make

  2777. for peace

  2778. namely repentance

  2779. towards God

  2780. and faith in the

  2781. Lord Jesus

  2782. he will save you

  2783. so then with a

  2784. true heart you

  2785. might then cry out

  2786. with the crowds

  2787. blessed is the king

  2788. who comes in the

  2789. name of the Lord

  2790. peace in heaven

  2791. glory in the

  2792. highest

  2793. peace in heaven
