  1. Some of the most prominent themes in all of the Bible are the concepts of king and kingdom.

  2. ! We talked about this a couple of weeks ago in our fellowship group.

  3. We were working through the Lord's prayer and we were dealing with that phrase,

  4. thy kingdom come.

  5. What does that actually mean?

  6. What is Jesus instructing us on when he asks us to pray that?

  7. And we came back to this very thought.

  8. And that is, if not the most primary theme in the Bible, certainly one of the most prominent themes in the Scripture

  9. is this idea of king and kingdom.

  10. And I want you to think of it for just a moment in the broader scope of your Bible that you have in your hand.

  11. If you've ever read the Bible all the way through, if you're just familiar with how it's structured, you'll understand this.

  12. The Bible begins with a picture of kingdom with a king, right?

  13. We go to Genesis.

  14. We see God creates the world.

  15. He creates this kingdom, the kingdom of this world.

  16. It is a kingdom that is completely untouched by sin.

  17. And what does he put in the midst of this kingdom, of this garden?

  18. He puts a certain creature, Adam.

  19. And what is Adam to act as there in God's kingdom?

  20. As God's king.

  21. He's God's representative to the world that God has created.

  22. He is there to image God.

  23. To guard the garden.

  24. To speak truth.

  25. To lead faithfully.

  26. That's what Adam is meant to do.

  27. That's what God creates him to do.

  28. And he plants him in the garden, untouched by sin, for that purpose.

  29. Now, let's pause from that.

  30. And we're going to go to the whole other end of the Bible.

  31. You're going to skip all the stuff in the middle.

  32. We're going to go to the very end.

  33. And you get to the book of Revelation.

  34. What is it that we find there?

  35. Well, this is the revealing of a new kingdom.

  36. The new heavens.

  37. The new earth.

  38. God restoring a kingdom.

  39. Not that it is untouched by sin in the same way.

  40. But it is totally redeemed from sin.

  41. And what does God use in this kingdom to lead it?

  42. A new king.

  43. The true and better Adam.

  44. Jesus reigns in perfect righteousness in his eternal kingdom there.

  45. And so we can see right there from just the big picture.

  46. If we're thinking biblical theology for a moment.

  47. The Bible starts with kingdom and king.

  48. It ends with kingdom and king.

  49. And everything in the middle is this incredible story of man's rebellion.

  50. Man's redemption.

  51. Man's restoration.

  52. Through the saving work of God's king.

  53. Now, these are the themes that are at the heart of the Advent season.

  54. Which, according to the traditional Christian liturgical calendar, actually begins today.

  55. I don't know if you realize that or not.

  56. Maybe some of you did.

  57. And maybe you're planning to start either this morning or tonight.

  58. You've got your Advent devotional set aside that you're going to work through leading all the way up to December 24th.

  59. But today is the first Sunday of Advent.

  60. And these themes of king and kingdom is right at the very heart of it, isn't it?

  61. From the first time that man sinned in the garden, Adam and Eve, continuing all through the scriptures thereafter,

  62. God promised and reissued and continued these promises to send a savior king, a messiah, a Christ,

  63. who would save his people from sin.

  64. As the kids are learning in their kids' class on Sunday mornings,

  65. who will crush the head of the serpent, right?

  66. Who will restore the kingdom.

  67. Advent itself, it means arrival.

  68. Advent is about the arrival of this promised king.

  69. In the liturgical season, which will run through December 24th,

  70. it's meant to be a time of preparation, a time of anticipation that unfolds into,

  71. if you're following strictly the liturgical calendar,

  72. it will fold into the 12 days of Christmas,

  73. which some of you kids may not realize is more than just a song, right?

  74. And what is the 12 days of Christmas?

  75. It's a time of celebration.

  76. Celebration of what?

  77. The fact that the king has come.

  78. So we look to this promise in Advent.

  79. We look to God's promises of a messiah.

  80. And in Christmas season, we rejoice that the messiah has actually come.

  81. Now, why am I saying all of this?

  82. Because today we're going to find our place here in Luke's gospel.

  83. And when you come to your Bible and you begin to read,

  84. particularly in the four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,

  85. you need to understand what their goal is as they write.

  86. These are not just basic biographies.

  87. That's not what these books are.

  88. Certainly they have biographical information,

  89. but the authors, Luke, is not writing just to tell us some interesting stories

  90. about the life of Jesus of Nazareth.

  91. That's not what he's doing.

  92. That's why we call them gospels and not biographies.

  93. Gospel meaning good news.

  94. These are declarations.

  95. They are proclamations.

  96. They are arguments in that sense.

  97. And what Luke and Matthew and Mark and John are doing

  98. is they are trying to convince you, persuade you as the reader,

  99. the listener of this book,

  100. that Jesus of Nazareth is that promised king

  101. and that in his coming, his advent, his arrival,

  102. what he has brought with it is the inbreaking of this kingdom

  103. that he will one day complete at his return.

  104. Now, I want you to think about Luke's gospel for a moment.

  105. He even begins his gospel by doing what?

  106. Detailing the events of the literal arrival of the king in Bethlehem.

  107. And everything that follows in this book is Luke's account.

  108. It serves the purpose of declaring this good news

  109. that Jesus Christ is the king

  110. and how through his life and death and resurrection,

  111. he made a way for you to be a citizen of his kingdom.

  112. Totally redeemed from sin.

  113. So on this first Sunday of Advent,

  114. we're not going to do an Advent series.

  115. We'll be back in 1 Peter next week.

  116. But at least on this first Sunday of Advent,

  117. I want to take you through a story in Luke

  118. that I think beautifully portrays Jesus as king

  119. and reveals how you can enter his kingdom.

  120. Let's read it together.

  121. Luke 17, verses 11 to 19.

    Luke 17:11–19

  122. On the way to Jerusalem,

  123. he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee.

  124. And as he entered a village,

  125. he was met by 10 lepers who stood at a distance,

  126. lifted up their voices saying,

  127. Jesus, master, have mercy on us.

  128. When he saw them, he said to them,

  129. go and show yourselves to the priest.

  130. And as they went, they were cleansed.

  131. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed,

  132. turned back, praising God with a loud voice,

  133. and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet,

  134. giving him thanks.

  135. Now he was a Samaritan.

  136. And then Jesus answered,

  137. were not 10 cleansed?

  138. Where are the nine?

  139. Was no one found to return and give praise to God

  140. except this foreigner?

  141. And he said to him,

  142. rise and go your way.

  143. Your faith has made you well.

  144. Now perhaps you're familiar with this story.

  145. Only Luke records it.

  146. And it's usually presented as a powerful lesson

  147. on gratitude and on thanksgiving.

  148. Of course, highlighting the one former leper

  149. who after being cleansed,

  150. out of all the others,

  151. goes back to Jesus and offers his thanksgiving.

  152. And there can be no doubt that thanksgiving

  153. is certainly a big part of this text.

  154. I want to suggest to you, though,

  155. that thanksgiving and gratitude

  156. is not actually the point of this text.

  157. What is this text actually meant to be doing here?

  158. Why did Luke care to write it

  159. when Matthew and Mark and John didn't?

  160. And why did he place it where he placed it?

  161. And I want to suggest that

  162. actually the main point of this story

  163. and why Luke includes it for us

  164. is actually to give us a picture of the gospel.

  165. It's to glorify Jesus as king,

  166. which I've already said

  167. is kind of the whole point of the book, right?

  168. It's to show that Jesus is this king

  169. and that he has brought the kingdom

  170. and that you might enter it

  171. if you trust him and believe him.

  172. I think that's what Luke's actually doing

  173. in this little story.

  174. Yes, we want to be thankful.

  175. We don't want to miss that here.

  176. But I don't think it's actually about that.

  177. It's about something much more profound than that.

  178. Sometimes we look at the arrangement of material

  179. in the gospels

  180. and we think that maybe they're just

  181. kind of this random assortment of events.

  182. And I think that would be a mistake

  183. for you to approach the gospels that way.

  184. That would, one, be a pretty low view

  185. of these four authors that wrote this.

  186. Certainly they were more intelligent

  187. and more intentional

  188. than just to collect a bunch of random things

  189. and with no particular order.

  190. I actually think Luke's doing something

  191. very different than that.

  192. He is carefully ordering his material.

  193. He's organizing this book

  194. so that we might understand his argument.

  195. So we need to determine

  196. why Luke chose to place this story here.

  197. And the only way to do that

  198. is to look at what else he put around it.

  199. So let's just zoom out for just a moment

  200. and consider the chapter.

  201. In verses one to four,

  202. we find Jesus is teaching his disciples

  203. a lesson on obedience and repentance

  204. and the forgiveness that comes

  205. after that repentance.

  206. And he's doing that in the context

  207. of how they are to interact with one another.

  208. And of course, as they're interacting

  209. with one another,

  210. they are imaging God

  211. and God's call to repentance

  212. and God's willingness to forgive

  213. again and again and again and again.

  214. So we have that teaching there

  215. in the first four verses.

  216. And we get to verses five and six

  217. and we see Jesus is teaching

  218. another lesson to his disciples on faith.

  219. It's a common one

  220. that we see him teaching in the Gospels.

  221. Little faith, like a mustard seed

  222. that can do impossible things, right?

  223. And of course, what's the point of that lesson?

  224. It's not to say that

  225. if you just believe hard enough,

  226. you can do anything.

  227. No, that's a worldly message.

  228. That's not a biblical message.

  229. No, what does Jesus mean to teach us there?

  230. He means to say that faith,

  231. God responds to faith

  232. by doing the impossible in your life.

  233. Faith is at the heart of it

  234. and it only takes a little bit of it.

  235. And God responds with magnificent things in our lives.

  236. And then we get to the next section.

  237. We get to verses seven to 10

  238. and we find this maybe strange story

  239. that Jesus is telling about a master

  240. and his servants.

  241. It's a story about servant-hearted humility

  242. and submission to God.

  243. We might say it this way,

  244. it's a story about lordship

  245. and humble service to the king.

  246. All right, and then comes this story

  247. that we just read.

  248. But we got to look at what comes after it.

  249. That'll help us get the proper context.

  250. We see right in verses 20 all the way to 37,

  251. we see Jesus is now in a conversation

  252. with a group of Pharisees.

  253. And the whole conversation

  254. is about the coming kingdom.

  255. In verses 22 to 37,

  256. it's all focused on the kingdom

  257. that is to come at the end,

  258. the eschaton, right?

  259. At the end when Jesus returns,

  260. the day of judgment that will come

  261. and what will that be like

  262. and what will the signs be like

  263. when the kingdom does finally come in its fullness.

  264. That's verses 22 to 37.

  265. But Jesus does this thing

  266. that would have surprised the Pharisees,

  267. certainly they wouldn't have bought into it,

  268. and that's in verses 20 to 21.

  269. Before he says, yes,

  270. the kingdom is indeed coming,

  271. he says it's actually already here

  272. in some measure.

  273. Just look at it in verse 20.

  274. Being asked by the Pharisees

  275. when the kingdom would come,

  276. he answered the kingdom of God

  277. is not coming in ways that can be observed.

  278. They were looking for, in that moment,

  279. for these big signs,

  280. political arrangements

  281. and military arrangements

  282. and a particular king

  283. that's gonna sit on a throne

  284. and do all these things,

  285. things you can see.

  286. Jesus says the kingdom

  287. isn't coming that way right now.

  288. You won't be able to see it

  289. the way that you think

  290. you'll be able to see it.

  291. Nor will they say,

  292. look, here it is, they're there.

  293. Why?

  294. Because the kingdom

  295. is in the midst of you, he says.

  296. It's in the midst of you.

  297. So there's this already,

  298. not yet view of the kingdom.

  299. Yes, it will come in its fullness,

  300. but it's already here

  301. in some measure.

  302. Now, we take all of that into account

  303. and we realize,

  304. when we put this story

  305. in its context,

  306. what is it exactly

  307. that Luke's doing

  308. by telling us about these lepers?

  309. We find that he's using it

  310. as a living illustration

  311. of all of these truths

  312. that Jesus was teaching

  313. in this chapter

  314. that he's arranged for us.

  315. He's got repentance,

  316. he's got faith,

  317. he's got lordship,

  318. he's got kingdom,

  319. he's got king,

  320. he's got all of it there

  321. right in the middle of it.

  322. He says,

  323. now let me tell you this story

  324. about something that happened

  325. with Jesus and these lepers

  326. that perfectly shows

  327. all of these things

  328. and how they are lived out

  329. in practice.

  330. Jesus' interaction

  331. with this man in particular,

  332. it reveals how the kingdom

  333. is already in our midst

  334. and its citizens

  335. are marked by repentance

  336. and faith

  337. and submission

  338. to Jesus as king.

  339. And the placement of it here,

  340. it emphasizes a sign

  341. that the kingdom

  342. has come in Jesus

  343. and that citizenship

  344. in that kingdom

  345. depends entirely

  346. on faith in him.

  347. And that's the two parts

  348. that I want to point out

  349. to you here.

  350. First, I want you to see this.

  351. I want you to see the sign

  352. of the king,

  353. the sign of the king.

  354. Look again at verses 11 to 14.

  355. Let's just read this part

  356. of the story again.

  357. On the way to Jerusalem,

  358. he was passing along

  359. between Samaria and Galilee.

  360. And as he entered a village,

  361. he was met by ten lepers

  362. who stood at a distance,

  363. lifted up their voices,

  364. saying,

  365. Jesus, Master,

  366. have mercy on us.

  367. When he saw them,

  368. he said to them,

  369. go and show yourselves

  370. to the priest.

  371. And as they went,

  372. they were cleansed.

  373. Now, let's think about

  374. this first phrase.

  375. He's on his way to Jerusalem,

  376. which is really how

  377. Luke is structuring

  378. his narrative.

  379. Beginning all the way back

  380. at chapter 9,

  381. he structures it

  382. around this final journey

  383. that Jesus is taking

  384. from Galilee

  385. to Jerusalem.

  386. And you know what

  387. he is moving to Jerusalem

  388. to do?

  389. To die on a cross.

  390. And that's how Luke

  391. is tracking these stories

  392. and these lessons

  393. along in his particular gospels.

  394. Those who had a messianic

  395. thought of Jesus

  396. believed that he was

  397. going to get there

  398. and he was going to

  399. assume a throne,

  400. deliver Israel from Rome.

  401. If you think back,

  402. even if you've ever studied

  403. what we call

  404. the triumphal entry,

  405. what was that all about?

  406. That's at the end

  407. of this journey

  408. that Luke's referring to.

  409. Jesus finally does

  410. get to Jerusalem

  411. and he rides on that donkey

  412. and what is it

  413. that the people do?

  414. They welcome him

  415. as a king.

  416. They throw down

  417. their garments

  418. and the palm branches

  419. and they shout,

  420. Hosanna!

  421. Salvation is here!

  422. The Lord saves!

  423. And they're expecting

  424. Jesus is going to

  425. mount this donkey

  426. and he's going to

  427. ride it all the way

  428. to the throne.

  429. Except that's not

  430. where he rides.

  431. He rides to the temple,

  432. doesn't he?

  433. He didn't come

  434. to sit on a throne,

  435. not at least

  436. in this instance.

  437. He came to die

  438. on a cross.

  439. God's king,

  440. he wasn't going

  441. to deliver his people

  442. by defeating Rome.

  443. He had come

  444. to deliver his people

  445. by defeating sin

  446. and making an atonement

  447. for their sin.

  448. And we find

  449. Jesus is early

  450. in this journey

  451. at this point

  452. in Luke's gospel.

  453. And he's journeying

  454. north from Galilee,

  455. south to Jerusalem.

  456. And he's going

  457. towards Samaria

  458. at this point.

  459. And of course,

  460. he and his disciples

  461. are met by a group

  462. of lepers

  463. as they entered

  464. the village.

  465. Now that the encounter

  466. took place

  467. at the entrance

  468. of the village

  469. makes a lot of sense,

  470. doesn't it?

  471. Because lepers

  472. were excluded

  473. from society

  474. on account

  475. of their condition.

  476. This form

  477. of leprosy

  478. that we see

  479. notated

  480. in the gospels

  481. was a terrible

  482. terminal

  483. disease.

  484. It involved

  485. skin lesions

  486. that would spread

  487. through the body

  488. and cause it

  489. to decay.

  490. It also affected

  491. the nervous system

  492. in a unique way.

  493. It created

  494. this numbing effect

  495. so that their brain

  496. wouldn't always register

  497. whenever they were

  498. sensing pain

  499. or when something

  500. was wrong.

  501. So you can imagine

  502. the longer that

  503. these people lived,

  504. it was a slow disease

  505. the way that it took over.

  506. But the longer

  507. they would live,

  508. not only would their

  509. body be deteriorating,

  510. but they might

  511. would roll an ankle

  512. and not realize

  513. exactly what's happening.

  514. and it creates

  515. these other injuries

  516. that are unrelated

  517. to the skin lesions.

  518. It's just a terrible

  519. way to have to live

  520. your life.

  521. Leprosy wasn't

  522. just a diagnosis.

  523. It was a death sentence.

  524. A leper didn't

  525. just lose their health.

  526. They lost everything.

  527. They lost their family.

  528. They lost their home,

  529. their job,

  530. their community.

  531. They weren't allowed

  532. to worship any longer

  533. in synagogue or temple

  534. either one.

  535. They're outcasts

  536. living on the fringes

  537. of society

  538. and barring a miracle

  539. in their lives,

  540. this kind of leprosy

  541. had a 100% death rate.

  542. Lepers were required

  543. to cover themselves,

  544. cover their faces

  545. whenever they would get

  546. within a certain distance

  547. from other people

  548. who were healthy.

  549. They would have to yell out,

  550. they'd cover their face

  551. and they'd have to yell out,

  552. unclean!

  553. Unclean!

  554. It was the law.

  555. They were highly contagious.

  556. And here Jesus

  557. and his disciples

  558. are nearing a village

  559. in Samaria,

  560. bordering Samaria

  561. and Galilee.

  562. And here's this group

  563. of lepers,

  564. this commune outside,

  565. 10 lepers,

  566. who cover their faces

  567. but it's not unclean

  568. that they yell out.

  569. Somehow they recognize

  570. who this is

  571. that's coming.

  572. Perhaps there's a crowd

  573. that's following Jesus along.

  574. At this point,

  575. he's three years

  576. into this ministry.

  577. His fame was spread

  578. even beyond Israel

  579. at this point.

  580. They recognized

  581. who he was

  582. and they cry out,

  583. Jesus,

  584. Master,

  585. have mercy

  586. on us.

  587. Such is the cry

  588. from many of the suffering people

  589. who encounter Jesus

  590. in the Gospels.

  591. Mercy from God

  592. through his Messiah

  593. was their only hope

  594. for life.

  595. And these poor souls

  596. did what any of us

  597. would have done.

  598. You've heard the stories

  599. of this great healer?

  600. And here he comes.

  601. Maybe before they had

  602. contracted the disease,

  603. maybe they had witnessed him

  604. do it

  605. or heard him teach.

  606. They recognize him

  607. and they do what we would have done.

  608. Have mercy!

  609. Lord,

  610. have mercy.

  611. They begged for

  612. the great healer

  613. to show mercy

  614. and help him

  615. and what we find Jesus doing

  616. is what we find Jesus

  617. always doing.

  618. He hears their cry

  619. and he answers

  620. and he heals them.

  621. And what's amazing

  622. about this particular miracle

  623. is that Jesus does it

  624. in the most

  625. undramatic way ever.

  626. It's very quick.

  627. He doesn't converse

  628. with them

  629. at least in the way

  630. that Luke tells the story.

  631. He doesn't converse

  632. with them in any way.

  633. He doesn't touch them

  634. like we see him doing

  635. with other lepers.

  636. There's very little

  637. interaction here.

  638. This is very undramatic,

  639. isn't it?

  640. What does he do?

  641. He just simply says,

  642. go show yourself

  643. to the priest.

  644. Now this was important.

  645. This was part of the law.

  646. In order to be able

  647. to reenter society again,

  648. to get their life back,

  649. they would have to go

  650. to the temple.

  651. They'd have to present

  652. themselves to the priest.

  653. Then eight days

  654. they would have to live

  655. and be monitored

  656. and observed

  657. before they would actually

  658. be allowed back

  659. into society.

  660. The people who went

  661. to present themselves

  662. before the priest

  663. were the people

  664. who believed themselves

  665. to have been healed

  666. of their disease

  667. or cleansed

  668. from their leprosy.

  669. Jesus tells these men,

  670. if they were all men,

  671. he tells these ten lepers

  672. to go and present themselves

  673. to the priest

  674. except they're not clean.

  675. They're not healed.

  676. They're still leprous.

  677. They're still leprous.

  678. Meaning that before

  679. anything's going to happen

  680. for them in this moment,

  681. some measure of faith

  682. and obedience

  683. has to come into play.

  684. Surely there was

  685. a discussion, right?

  686. Who knows how long

  687. they've been out there

  688. together, dying.

  689. They've heard the stories,

  690. maybe they've heard

  691. about Jesus actually

  692. touching others

  693. and he's telling us

  694. to go to the priest.

  695. How can we do that?

  696. They're not even going

  697. to let us in the city.

  698. Eventually they decide

  699. to do it

  700. and what happens?

  701. As they are on their way,

  702. they're cleansed

  703. suddenly.

  704. And this cleansing,

  705. it wouldn't have been

  706. minor.

  707. They had everything to gain,

  708. nothing to lose.

  709. They set out for the temple

  710. and suddenly their skin

  711. becomes perfectly healthy.

  712. They're healthy.

  713. The broken bones

  714. that maybe they had

  715. suffered along the way

  716. are strong,

  717. set in place,

  718. missing fingers

  719. are suddenly present

  720. and functioning,

  721. whatever was the case.

  722. Jesus never heals halfway.

  723. The cleansing he brings,

  724. it's total,

  725. it's complete

  726. and these lepers

  727. would have experienced

  728. new life and health

  729. to the fullest

  730. as a result of Jesus'

  731. kindness toward them.

  732. It's not hard to see

  733. the symbolism here,

  734. is it?

  735. It's a symbol

  736. of the spiritual cleansing

  737. that Jesus came

  738. to bring all

  739. who will trust

  740. and obey him.

  741. And that cleansing,

  742. just like the cleansing

  743. of these lepers,

  744. is total.

  745. It's complete.

  746. He doesn't do anything

  747. halfway.

  748. He doesn't come

  749. part of the way

  750. and expect you

  751. to come the rest

  752. of the way

  753. to complete the process.

  754. No, he does it all

  755. from start to finish.

  756. to the fullest.

  757. It lacks nothing at all.

  758. It comes entirely

  759. of Jesus' own kindness

  760. and compassion

  761. toward sinners.

  762. Just like those lepers,

  763. spiritually speaking,

  764. each of us

  765. have a death sentence

  766. on our lives.

  767. 100% death rate.

  768. The only hope we have

  769. is a miracle from God

  770. that he will intervene,

  771. that he will show mercy

  772. to us,

  773. kindness and compassion

  774. to us.

  775. Mercy from God

  776. through his king

  777. is your only hope.

  778. And if you will come

  779. through his king,

  780. your healing,

  781. your cleansing

  782. will be complete,

  783. paid in full.

  784. Now the prophets foretold

  785. that a sign of the Messiah

  786. would be his power

  787. to heal.

  788. Jesus demonstrated

  789. that power

  790. on a remarkably

  791. massive scale.

  792. John MacArthur

  793. used to talk about

  794. how Jesus essentially

  795. eradicated disease

  796. from Israel

  797. throughout his ministry.

  798. I mean,

  799. we're talking thousands

  800. and thousands

  801. and thousands

  802. of people

  803. who are coming to him

  804. sometimes on a daily basis.

  805. They're being healed

  806. in tangible ways.

  807. It's not something

  808. that you could just

  809. quickly dismiss

  810. to say there's no way

  811. that happened.

  812. If there was maybe

  813. just a handful of people

  814. that Jesus had claimed

  815. to have healed,

  816. maybe so.

  817. This is healing

  818. on a massive scale.

  819. Thousands of people.

  820. And what he did

  821. for these lepers

  822. doesn't even begin

  823. to scratch the surface

  824. of the power

  825. that he demonstrated

  826. throughout his three years

  827. of ministry.

  828. And what was this all about?

  829. Why does Luke record

  830. all of these instances?

  831. Matthew and Mark

  832. and John the same.

  833. Why did they even

  834. add this in there?

  835. Well, it's not just

  836. to amaze us.

  837. It's to show us

  838. something about Jesus.

  839. It's to say

  840. Jesus is that king

  841. that Isaiah said

  842. when he comes

  843. the blind will see

  844. and the lame will leap

  845. and the dumb will speak.

  846. It's marked

  847. in his existence

  848. and what he has done.

  849. Just look at Jesus.

  850. He is the king.

  851. The savior king.

  852. God sends

  853. his people.

  854. That's the point.

  855. The first part

  856. of this story,

  857. I think.

  858. Yeah, there's compassion.

  859. There's this

  860. microcosm

  861. of a gospel story

  862. right here

  863. in these first few verses

  864. and all of it's

  865. pointing to the fact

  866. that Jesus is king.

  867. The king has come.

  868. Well, then we get

  869. to the second part

  870. of the story

  871. and we see

  872. we move from

  873. a sign of the king

  874. to now we're seeing

  875. a citizen of the kingdom.

  876. Citizen of the kingdom.

  877. Look at 15 to 19.

  878. Then one of them,

  879. when he saw

  880. that he was healed,

  881. turned back.

  882. He was praising God

  883. with a loud voice

  884. and he fell on his face

  885. at Jesus' feet

  886. giving him thanks.

  887. Now he's a Samaritan

  888. and Jesus answered,

  889. Were not ten cleansed?

  890. Where are the other nine?

  891. Was no one found

  892. to return

  893. and give praise to God

  894. except this foreigner?

  895. And he said to him,

  896. that is he said

  897. to this former leper

  898. who has returned,

  899. Rise and go your way.

  900. Your faith has made you

  901. well.

  902. Now all of those lepers

  903. experienced an incredible

  904. life-changing miracle.

  905. This one experienced

  906. something that he

  907. could have never imagined here.

  908. Luke here,

  909. he moves from the many

  910. to the one.

  911. He's making a distinction

  912. in the work

  913. that Jesus is doing.

  914. There is this big work

  915. that he's doing in the ten.

  916. There's a different work

  917. that he's doing in the one.

  918. It's significant.

  919. They were all

  920. cleansed of body.

  921. This one, I believe,

  922. was cleansed of soul.

  923. And we find that

  924. in Jesus' final statement

  925. in verse 19.

  926. Literally it reads,

  927. Your faith has saved you.

  928. An expression

  929. that he often communicated

  930. to those who he healed.

  931. It's a reference

  932. to spiritual salvation

  933. as distinct from

  934. physical healing.

  935. healing.

  936. There's really no question

  937. as we understand

  938. the gospels

  939. that Jesus had more

  940. in mind here

  941. with this statement

  942. than healing from a disease.

  943. As God's king,

  944. Jesus affirmed

  945. this former leper

  946. as a new citizen

  947. of his kingdom.

  948. But why?

  949. And this is where

  950. Jesus' teaching

  951. throughout the chapter

  952. begins to show itself

  953. in this story.

  954. It's in the life

  955. of this one man.

  956. Just three things

  957. I think are helpful

  958. to note here.

  959. First I want you

  960. to notice his return.

  961. His return.

  962. Look at verse 15 again.

  963. One of them,

  964. when he saw he was healed,

  965. turned back,

  966. praising God

  967. with a loud voice.

  968. Jesus says it again

  969. in verse 18.

  970. Was no one found

  971. to return

  972. and give praise

  973. but this one.

  974. Now remember

  975. at the beginning

  976. of the chapter

  977. Jesus taught this lesson

  978. on repentance

  979. that's to result

  980. in forgiveness.

  981. It's not a coincidence

  982. that Luke is using

  983. language of repentance

  984. to describe

  985. how this man

  986. turned back,

  987. praising God

  988. with a loud voice.

  989. Paul told the Romans

  990. in Romans chapter 2

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  991. and verse 4

  992. that God's kindness

  993. and patience

  994. are meant to lead us

  995. to repentance.

  996. And here in the 10

  997. lepers,

  998. we see an example

  999. of God's kindness

  1000. and of his patience.

  1001. A miracle that was

  1002. meant to show them

  1003. Jesus.

  1004. A miracle that was

  1005. meant to bring them

  1006. to something deeper

  1007. than physical healing.

  1008. That was meant

  1009. to bring them

  1010. to repentance

1011. and now with the one,

  1012. Luke is using

  1013. this language

  1014. of repentance,

  1015. he turned back.

  1016. Jesus says

  1017. he returns.

  1018. Literally that word

  1019. for repentance,

  1020. a turning away

  1021. and turning to God

  1022. in these moments.

  1023. All 10 lepers

  1024. received God's grace

  1025. and their healing

  1026. but only this man

  1027. turned

  1028. even from the benefits

  1029. of that healing

  1030. to offer praise

  1031. and thanksgiving

  1032. to Jesus.

1033. Now we need to think

  1034. about what he was

  1035. turning away from.

  1036. going to the priest

  1037. would have resulted

  1038. in this man

  1039. getting his life back.

  1040. And I would imagine

  1041. after this encounter

  1042. with Jesus

  1043. he did indeed

  1044. go to the priest

1045. and get his life back.

  1046. But even that

  1047. becomes a lesser priority

  1048. than coming back

  1049. to Jesus

  1050. in this moment

  1051. to offer his thanks

  1052. and to give praise

  1053. to God

  1054. through the king.

1055. Is that not a picture

  1056. of real spiritual repentance?

  1057. What he's turning away

  1058. from in this moment

1059. is not some gross sin

  1060. not some pagan

  1061. heresy.

  1062. He's turning away

  1063. from life

  1064. and health

  1065. and everything good.

1066. But even the best things

  1067. in true repentance

  1068. become lesser things

  1069. when it means

  1070. that we're coming

  1071. to Jesus

  1072. in the process.

  1073. Isn't that what he's doing?

  1074. There is no salvation

  1075. without repentance

1076. and what this man did

  1077. beautifully pictures

  1078. what repentance

  1079. unto salvation

  1080. actually looks like.

1081. So we see his return.

  1082. Next I want you

  1083. to see his faith.

  1084. His faith.

  1085. I look again

  1086. at the second half

  1087. of verse 15.

  1088. He turned back

1089. and he was praising God

  1090. with a loud voice

1091. just as a nice side note.

1092. You can ask your kids

1093. this when they get home.

1094. They can get a piece of dessert

1095. if they get this right.

  1096. The Greek language here

  1097. literally means megaphone.

  1098. Phones megalase.

  1099. Megaphone.

  1100. He's coming

1101. and as he's on his way

  1102. back to Jesus

  1103. this is not subtle.

  1104. You know

1105. he's not in the service

  1106. singing the song

1107. and he's got his head down

  1108. and he's hoping

  1109. that nobody hears him

  1110. because he might be

  1111. a little embarrassed

1112. if they hear his voice.

1113. No, this man doesn't care.

1114. This is like a megaphone.

  1115. He's praising God

1116. as he's on his way back

  1117. to find Jesus

  1118. in this moment.

1119. Now are we to assume

  1120. that the other nine

  1121. former lepers

  1122. did not praise God

  1123. as they journey

  1124. to see the priest?

  1125. That's often how

  1126. this story is presented

  1127. isn't it?

  1128. That well there were

  1129. ten of them

  1130. and they all received

  1131. this healing

1132. but only one of them

  1133. actually had any gratitude.

  1134. But you know

  1135. the text doesn't

  1136. actually say that.

  1137. What it does say

1138. is that one of them

  1139. returned to Jesus.

  1140. It doesn't say

  1141. that the other nine

  1142. refused to have gratitude

  1143. or that they didn't

  1144. praise God.

  1145. I would imagine

  1146. on their way

  1147. to the temple

  1148. there's a pretty nice

  1149. party going on.

  1150. They're excited

  1151. they're going to get

  1152. their life back.

  1153. If they're Jews

  1154. they would have understood

  1155. this is coming

  1156. because of God's

  1157. mercy on my life.

  1158. Probably I would imagine

  1159. a lot of praising

  1160. going on.

  1161. I don't think

  1162. that the emphasis

  1163. of this text

  1164. is to say

  1165. that they didn't

  1166. praise God.

  1167. Jesus' emphasis

  1168. is not just

  1169. on the man's praise.

  1170. It's on the fact

  1171. that he returned

  1172. to Jesus

  1173. to offer

  1174. that praise

  1175. to God.

  1176. At the very least

  1177. he seems to have

  1178. grasped

  1179. that Jesus

  1180. was God's

  1181. representative

  1182. and even

  1183. Jesus' response

  1184. suggests

  1185. that the man

  1186. understood him

  1187. to be more

  1188. than just a

  1189. prophetic representative

  1190. like the woman

  1191. at the well.

  1192. His eyes

  1193. were opened

  1194. to Jesus'

  1195. messianic

  1196. significance.

  1197. This was God's

  1198. promised king.

  1199. It's not only

  1200. that he's offering

  1201. praise to God

  1202. it's that he's

  1203. offering praise

  1204. to God

  1205. through Jesus.

  1206. He falls

  1207. at Jesus'

  1208. feet

  1209. and he offers

  1210. his praise

  1211. to God

  1212. through thanksgiving

  1213. to Jesus

  1214. as a mediator

  1215. of God's

  1216. blessing

  1217. on his life.

  1218. And it's

  1219. this faith

  1220. in the heart

  1221. of this man

  1222. this faith

  1223. in the person

  1224. of Christ

  1225. that Jesus

  1226. responds to

  1227. in verse 19

  1228. when he says

  1229. your faith

  1230. has saved

  1231. you.

  1232. The others

  1233. may very well

  1234. have offered

  1235. praise to God

  1236. I imagine

  1237. that they

  1238. very likely

  1239. did

  1240. but they

  1241. missed Jesus

  1242. in the process

  1243. of it

  1244. and because

  1245. they failed

  1246. to recognize

  1247. and return

  1248. to Jesus

  1249. they missed

  1250. the greatest

  1251. miracle of all

  1252. in the story

  1253. the cleansing

  1254. of their souls.

  1255. You see

  1256. without faith

  1257. in the person

  1258. and work

  1259. of Jesus Christ

  1260. there is no

  1261. salvation.

  1262. salvation

  1263. your life

  1264. may contain

  1265. all kinds

  1266. of praises

  1267. to God

  1268. whether that's

  1269. just a general

  1270. idea of God

  1271. in your mind

  1272. or maybe it's

  1273. even in the

  1274. context of

  1275. Christian religion

  1276. you may have

  1277. all kinds

  1278. of praise

  1279. to offer

  1280. but if you

  1281. miss Jesus

  1282. in the process

  1283. of it

  1284. you've missed

  1285. everything.

  1286. If all you

  1287. get out of

  1288. this story

  1289. is offering

  1290. thanksgiving

  1291. to God

  1292. and you

  1293. miss Jesus

  1294. you've

  1295. missed it

  1296. all

  1297. and if

  1298. you go

  1299. through this

  1300. life

  1301. affiliating

  1302. with

  1303. Christianity

  1304. and showing

  1305. up to

  1306. church

  1307. on Sunday

  1308. and singing

  1309. with everybody

  1310. else

  1311. when we go

  1312. through the

  1313. songs

  1314. and sitting

  1315. around the

  1316. table at

  1317. Thanksgiving

  1318. saying God

  1319. it's just

  1320. been so good

  1321. to me

  1322. look at all

  1323. that I have

  1324. or whatever

  1325. it is

  1326. and you

  1327. miss Jesus

  1328. and all

  1329. the process

  1330. of it

  1331. you've

  1332. missed

  1333. it all

  1334. you've

  1335. received

  1336. some great

  1337. benefits

  1338. of his

  1339. kindness

  1340. but that

  1341. doesn't make

  1342. you a

  1343. citizen

  1344. of his

  1345. kingdom

  1346. his

  1347. faith

  1348. here

  1349. is

  1350. significant

  1351. the

  1352. picture

  1353. of

  1354. lordship

  1355. as he

  1356. cast

  1357. himself

  1358. at

  1359. Jesus

  1360. feet

  1361. all

  1362. part

  1363. of

  1364. this

  1365. chapter

  1366. isn't

  1367. it

  1368. and we

  1369. find this

  1370. third

  1371. thing

  1372. here

  1373. we see

  1374. his

  1375. citizenship

  1376. look

  1377. again

  1378. at

  1379. verse

  1380. 16

  1381. now

  1382. he was

  1383. a

  1384. Samaritan

  1385. verse

  1386. 18

  1387. is

  1388. no

  1389. one

  1390. found

  1391. to

  1392. return

  1393. and

  1394. give

  1395. praise

  1396. to

  1397. God

  1398. except

  1399. this

  1400. foreigner

  1401. now

  1402. this

  1403. seems

  1404. weird

  1405. doesn't

  1406. it

  1407. why

  1408. would

  1409. Luke

  1410. make

  1411. an

  1412. issue

  1413. of

  1414. this

  1415. why

  1416. would

  1417. he

  1418. bring

  1419. out

  1420. the

  1421. fact

  1422. that

  1423. this

  1424. man

  1425. was

  1426. a

  1427. Samaritan

  1428. well

  1429. Luke's

  1430. primary

  1431. audience

  1432. is

  1433. not

  1434. a

  1435. Jewish

  1436. audience

  1437. can

  1438. you

  1439. imagine

  1440. you're

  1441. a

  1442. Gentile

  1443. you've

  1444. been

  1445. told

  1446. your

  1447. whole

  1448. life

  1449. as

  1450. far

  1451. as

  1452. it

  1453. goes

  1454. with

  1455. the

  1456. Jewish

  1457. God

  1458. you're

  1459. excluded

  1460. and

  1461. now

  1462. Luke's

  1463. writing

  1464. this

  1465. and

  1466. he's

  1467. telling

  1468. about

  1469. God's

  1470. king

  1471. and

  1472. he's

  1473. saying

  1474. the

  1475. guy

  1476. that

  1477. he

  1478. responded

  1479. to

  1480. wasn't

  1481. a

  1482. Jew

  1483. he was

  1484. a

  1485. Samaritan

  1486. it's

  1487. a

  1488. pretty

  1489. big

  1490. deal

  1491. isn't

  1492. it

  1493. Jesus

  1494. is

  1495. making

  1496. a

  1497. big

  1498. point

  1499. here

  1500. by

  1501. calling

  1502. him

  1503. a

  1504. foreigner

  1505. he's

  1506. not

  1507. degrading

  1508. him

  1509. that's

  1510. not

  1511. what

  1512. Jesus

  1513. is

  1514. doing

  1515. he's

  1516. not

  1517. he's

  1518. making

  1519. a

  1520. point

  1521. about

  1522. the

  1523. kingdom

  1524. part

  1525. of

  1526. the

  1527. of

  1528. his

  1529. kingdom

  1530. and

  1531. of

  1532. his

  1533. true

  1534. people

  1535. citizens

  1536. of

  1537. Christ's

  1538. kingdom

  1539. are

  1540. not

  1541. marked

  1542. by

  1543. ethnicity

  1544. they're

  1545. not

  1546. marked

  1547. by

  1548. political

  1549. alignment

  1550. they

  1551. are

  1552. marked

  1553. solely

  1554. by

  1555. faith

  1556. in

  1557. the

  1558. Lord

  1559. Jesus

  1560. Christ

  1561. thus

  1562. Jesus

  1563. tells

  1564. the

  1565. Pharisees

  1566. in

  1567. verse

  1568. 21

  1569. that

  1570. the

  1571. kingdom

  1572. of

  1573. God

  1574. is

  1575. already

  1576. in

  1577. the

  1578. midst

  1579. of

  1580. them

  1581. first

  1582. it's

  1583. in

  1584. their

  1585. midst

  1586. because

  1587. Jesus

  1588. is

  1589. there

  1590. he's

  1591. the

  1592. king

  1593. the

  1594. representative

  1595. of

  1596. the

  1597. kingdom

  1598. but

  1599. from

  1600. there

  1601. it's

  1602. present

  1603. in

  1604. people

  1605. from

  1606. every

  1607. nation

  1608. who

  1609. trust

  1610. and

  1611. love

  1612. and

  1613. follow

  1614. him

  1615. that's

  1616. how

  1617. the

  1618. kingdom

  1619. breaks

  1620. through

  1621. even

  1622. now

  1623. it's

  1624. not

  1625. a

  1626. Jewish

  1627. kingdom

  1628. it's

  1629. not

  1630. an

  1631. Israeli

  1632. kingdom

  1633. it's

  1634. God's

  1635. kingdom

  1636. and it's

  1637. universal

  1638. it's

  1639. global

  1640. international

  1641. and it's

  1642. breaking

  1643. through

  1644. even

  1645. now

  1646. just

  1647. like

  1648. a

  1649. summer

  1650. day

  1651. when

  1652. an

  1653. afternoon

  1654. rain

  1655. storm

  1656. comes

  1657. through

  1658. and you've

  1659. got all

  1660. the dark

  1661. clouds

  1662. but as

  1663. the storm

  1664. begins

  1665. to break

  1666. you start

  1667. to see

  1668. these flashes

  1669. of light

  1670. from the

  1671. sun

  1672. it may

  1673. still be

  1674. raining

  1675. !

  1676. It may

  1677. still be

  1678. blowing

  1679. hard

  1680. but you

  1681. see

  1682. maybe

  1683. in the

  1684. distance

  1685. these

  1686. lights

  1687. of the

  1688. sun

  1689. poking

  1690. through

  1691. the

  1692. clouds

  1693. just

  1694. like

  1695. that

  1696. even

  1697. now

  1698. we're

  1699. going to

  1700. see

  1701. the sun

  1702. in its

  1703. fullness

  1704. one day

  1705. but even

  1706. now

  1707. there's

  1708. these

  1709. rays

  1710. of the

  1711. kingdom

  1712. that they're

  1713. shining

  1714. through

  1715. and they're

  1716. shining

  1717. through

  1718. entirely

  1719. based on

  1720. those who

  1721. come to

  1722. faith in

  1723. the Lord

  1724. Jesus

  1725. Christ

  1726. that's

  1727. how the

  1728. kingdom

  1729. comes

  1730. Kevin

  1731. de

  1732. young

  1733. says

  1734. the

  1735. kingdom

  1736. comes

  1737. when

  1738. and

  1739. where

  1740. the

  1741. king

  1742. is

  1743. known

  1744. when

  1745. Jesus

  1746. is

  1747. loved

  1748. and

  1749. worshipped

  1750. and

  1751. believed

  1752. upon

  1753. there

  1754. the

  1755. kingdom

  1756. of

  1757. God

  1758. is

  1759. in

  1760. the

  1761. midst

  1762. of

  1763. you

  1764. citizenship

  1765. !

  1766. in the

  1767. kingdom

  1768. eternal

  1769. salvation

  1770. in other

  1771. words

  1772. it's

  1773. not

  1774. about

  1775. ethnicity

  1776. political

  1777. alignment

  1778. or even

  1779. religious

  1780. affiliation

  1781. in and

  1782. of

  1783. itself

  1784. salvation

  1785. is

  1786. all

  1787. about

  1788. where

  1789. you

  1790. stand

  1791. with

  1792. the

  1793. king

  1794. Jesus

  1795. the

  1796. eternal

  1797. king

  1798. and

  1799. entrance

  1800. into

  1801. his

  1802. kingdom

  1803. comes

  1804. exclusively

  1805. through

  1806. faith

  1807. in

  1808. him

  1809. exclusively

  1810. there

  1811. is

  1812. no

  1813. other

  1814. way

  1815. and

  1816. all

  1817. who

  1818. come

  1819. to

  1820. him

  1821. in

  1822. faith

  1823. are

  1824. welcomed

  1825. into

  1826. his

  1827. kingdom

  1828. all

  1829. everyone

  1830. it

  1831. doesn't

  1832. matter

  1833. what

  1834. you've

  1835. done

  1836. up to

  1837. this

  1838. point

  1839. in

  1840. your

  1841. life

  1842. it

  1843. doesn't

  1844. matter

  1845. how

  1846. unclean

  1847. you

  1848. actually

  1849. are

  1850. in

  1851. my

  1852. eyes

  1853. or

  1854. anybody

  1855. else's

  1856. eyes

  1857. you are

  1858. welcomed

  1859. by your

  1860. king

  1861. if you

  1862. will

  1863. come

  1864. to him

  1865. the way

  1866. he said

  1867. to come

  1868. to him

  1869. which is

  1870. in repentance

  1871. and faith

  1872. there's really

  1873. two miracles

  1874. that's happening

  1875. in this

  1876. story

  1877. the cleansing

  1878. !

  1879. cleansing

  1880. of the

  1881. ten

  1882. lepers

  1883. gets

  1884. all

  1885. the

  1886. attention

  1887. right

  1888. but

  1889. it's

  1890. the

  1891. cleansing

  1892. of

  1893. the

  1894. one

  1895. that

  1896. really

  1897. the

  1898. story

  1899. is

  1900. about

  1901. all

  1902. of

  1903. Jesus'

  1904. miracles

  1905. there

  1906. were

  1907. they're

  1908. meant

  1909. to be

  1910. these

  1911. signs

  1912. that

  1913. he

  1914. is

  1915. indeed

  1916. God's

  1917. son

  1918. and

  1919. Messiah

  1920. they

  1921. aren't

  1922. ends

  1923. in and

  1924. of

  1925. themselves

  1926. in

  1927. the

  1928. text

  1929. they

  1930. are

  1931. means

  1932. by

  1933. which

  1934. these

  1935. authors

  1936. are

  1937. revealing

  1938. the

  1939. true

  1940. nature

  1941. of

  1942. Jesus

  1943. because

  1944. once

  1945. we

  1946. see

  1947. who

  1948. he

  1949. is

  1950. only

  1951. then

  1952. will

  1953. we

  1954. begin

  1955. to

  1956. understand

  1957. the

  1958. significance

  1959. of

  1960. his

  1961. arrival

  1962. and

  1963. why

  1964. he

  1965. came

  1966. and

  1967. ultimately

  1968. he

  1969. didn't

  1970. come

  1971. to

  1972. heal

  1973. our

  1974. diseases

  1975. he

  1976. came

  1977. to

  1978. forgive

  1979. our

  1980. sins

  1981. and

  1982. the

  1983. only

  1984. way

  1985. that

  1986. those

  1987. sins

  1988. will

  1989. be

  1990. forgiven

  1991. is

  1992. if

  1993. he

  2014. on

  2015. his

  2016. way

  2017. to

  2018. Jerusalem

  2019. what

  2020. is

  2021. going

  2022. to

  2023. do

  2024. when

  2025. he

  2026. gets

  2027. there

  2028. he

  2029. is

  2030. going

  2031. to

  2032. lay

  2033. down

  2034. his

  2035. life

  2036. for

  2037. this

  2038. leper

  2039. that

  2040. came

  2041. back

  2042. and

  2043. fell

  2044. at

  2045. his

  2046. feet

  2047. and

  2048. worshipped

  2049. him

  2050. he

  2051. is

  2052. going

  2053. to

  2054. lay

  2055. down

  2056. his

  2057. life

  2058. for

  2059. you

  2060. and

  2061. for

  2062. me

  2063. that's

  2064. how

  2065. the

  2066. kingdom

  2067. comes

  2068. the

  2069. king

  2070. gives

  2071. himself

  2072. for

  2073. his

  2074. people

  2075. in

  2076. his

  2077. death

  2078. and

  2079. resurrection

  2080. those

  2081. who

  2082. trust

  2083. in

  2084. him

  2085. receive

  2086. forgiveness

  2087. of

  2089. they

  2090. receive

  2091. entrance

  2092. into

  2093. the

  2094. kingdom

  2095. and

  2096. if

  2097. like

  2098. the

  2099. man

  2100. in

  2101. this

  2102. story

  2103. you

  2104. will

  2105. turn

  2106. to

  2107. him

  2108. today

  2109. you

  2110. too

  2111. will

  2112. be

  2113. saved

  2114. Advent

  2115. is a

  2116. season

  2117. of

  2118. preparation

  2119. that

  2120. unfolds

  2121. into

  2122. celebration

  2123. puts

  2124. us

  2125. in the

  2126. shoes

  2127. of

  2128. Israel

  2129. in the

  2130. Old

  2131. Testament

  2132. as

  2133. they're

  2134. waiting

  2135. for the

  2136. fulfillment

  2137. of the

  2138. promise

  2139. and

  2140. of

  2141. course

  2142. December

  2143. 25th

  2144. rolls

  2145. around

  2146. and

  2147. it

  2148. breaks

  2149. into

  2150. celebration

  2151. that

  2152. the

  2153. promise

  2154. has

  2155. actually

  2156. been

  2157. fulfilled

  2158. but of

  2159. course

  2160. looking

  2161. from

  2162. this

  2163. side

  2164. of

  2165. the

  2166. cross

  2167. the

  2168. Advent

  2169. season

  2170. is a

  2171. little bit

  2172. different

  2173. for us

  2174. isn't

  2175. it

  2176. it

  2177. actually

  2178. starts

  2179. with

  2180. celebration

  2181. now

  2182. doesn't

  2183. it

  2184. because

  2185. the

  2186. king

  2187. has

  2188. already

  2189. come

  2190. it's

  2191. rooted

  2192. in

  2193. celebration

  2194. as we

  2195. prepare

  2196. and

  2197. anticipate

  2198. another

  2199. Advent

  2200. another

  2201. arrival

  2202. and

  2203. though

  2204. his

  2205. kingdom

  2206. is

  2207. already

  2208. in

  2209. our

  2210. midst

  2211. we

  2212. await

  2213. its

  2214. fullness

  2215. at

  2216. his

  2217. return

  2218. and

  2219. with

  2220. glad

  2221. and

  2222. joyful

  2223. hearts

  2224. we

  2225. celebrate

  2226. as we

  2227. prepare

  2228. for that

  2229. great

  2230. and

  2231. glorious

  2232. day

  2233. and

  2234. perhaps

  2235. this

  2236. story

  2237. will

  2238. be a

  2239. help

  2240. to

  2241. you

  2242. as

  2243. you

  2244. meditate

  2245. on

  2246. the

  2247. real

  2248. reason

  2249. that

  2250. we

  2251. celebrate

  2252. over

  2253. these

  2254. next

  2255. 24

  2256. or

  2257. 25

  2258. days

  2259. let's

  2260. pray

  2261. do
