  1. Peter writes, if you call on him as father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds,

  2. ! Conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the feudal ways inherited from your forefathers,

  3. not with perishable things such as silver and gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

  4. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you,

  5. who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. Amen.

  6. Robert Burns was a famous 18th century poet, widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland.

  7. And even if you don't know his name, or even if you can't think of any of his works off the top of your head,

  8. there is no doubt that you will be familiar with some of his work.

  9. If you've ever gathered with friends and family, or just turned on the TV to see Times Square on New Year's Eve,

  10. and the clock strikes midnight and you begin to sing that familiar tune, old, laying, sing, sign, however you say it,

  11. then you have interacted with Burns' probably most famous work.

  12. But there's another one that perhaps you would be familiar with, at least a statement within it that is quite helpful.

  13. In 1785, Robert Burns was running his plow in Scotland,

  14. and he accidentally ran over a nest of a mouse who was preparing its place for the winter months as they were approaching.

  15. And immediately understanding the tragedy of what this meant for that mouse,

  16. Burns was inspired to write another famous poem, which is creatively called To a Mouse.

  17. And of course, what the poem does, it wrestles and explores with the struggle of planning and building

  18. and working towards something that can all be destroyed in a moment

  19. by things that are totally outside of our control.

  20. The most famous stanza goes this way.

  21. Now, if that doesn't lift you up in the Christmas season, I don't know what will.

  22. But you know what he's saying.

  23. He's looking at this mouse that he has just destroyed potentially its entire life.

  24. And he thinks, you know what, my life is a lot like that.

  25. Working and planning and building towards something,

  26. and then something that is completely out of my control comes in,

  27. and it ruins everything that I've been planning.

  28. Ruins everything that I've been preparing for.

  29. And all it leaves me with is grief and pain for what was promised joy.

  30. In my plan, there was going to be great celebration at the completion of this thing.

  31. But because of forces outside of my control, I'm left with just grief and pain.

  32. Now, we're in the heart of the busiest season of the year for many of us,

  33. and with enormous amounts of parties to go to and family gatherings,

  34. gift shopping, gift wrapping, special concerts, church plays, outreach events,

  35. all kinds of things that are happening right now,

  36. this particular season can be more overwhelming than it can be jolly.

  37. And can we just take a moment and just reflect on how great all our mothers are

  38. who do so much to actually make these seasons work, right?

  39. But even the best and most organized of us know that as we're working hard this time of year,

  40. the most well-planned goal is still going to have something go wrong, right?

  41. One of your kids is going to get sick at the worst possible time for them to get sick.

  42. That one gift that you've been watching, the tracking,

  43. Amazon said it was going to be here in 24 hours, and that's turned into seven days,

  44. and you're not sure if it's actually going to make it on time,

  45. and now you're not sure exactly what to do.

  46. That's probably going to happen at some point.

  47. Cousin Eddie is going to show up unannounced to your Christmas celebration.

  48. Your brother is going to bring something up at Christmas,

  49. at the Christmas family gathering that you know is just going to cause a fight with everybody else.

  50. You're going to have all these plans, all these things you're trying to work out.

  51. Something's going to go wrong.

  52. The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.

  53. At the end of this second section of Peter's letter,

  54. the apostle is drawing our attention to an infinitely glorious plan

  55. that actually cannot be thwarted by anything.

  56. It's neither the plan of a mouse nor the plan of a man.

  57. It's the eternal plan of God through Christ to save us from sin and death.

  58. And these two verses, 20 and 21,

  59. they're tied directly to the command for Christians in verse 17

  60. to conduct their lives in the fear of God throughout the time of exile.

  61. So that recognizing that we have been ransomed from the futile ways of the world

  62. with the precious, sinless blood of Jesus Christ,

  63. we are to fear living in such a way as to treat that sacrifice

  64. as if it were garbage to demean it in any way.

  65. And these verses continue Peter's discussion of the atonement of Christ

  66. that has now rescued us.

  67. And in them, he insists that our redemption through Christ's blood

  68. was no afterthought.

  69. All of it, to the smallest detail,

  70. has come according to the definite plan of God.

  71. And it's all exactly according to plan.

  72. I want you to notice first with me the scope of God's plan in Christ.

  73. The scope of God's plan in Christ.

  74. Verse 20,

  75. He, Christ,

  76. was foreknown before the foundation of the world,

  77. but was made manifest in the last times.

  78. Peter here gives us the scope with these first two phrases.

  79. He's contrasting for us the design and the execution

  80. of God's redemption plan through Jesus Christ.

  81. Our redemption was designed by God the Father in eternity past,

  82. before the foundation of the world,

  83. Peter says,

  84. and it was executed by God the Son in history.

  85. That is, in the last times.

  86. And again, the emphasis is on the fact that our eternal salvation,

  87. this redemption through the blood of Christ,

  88. is God's plan.

  89. And that He has set His love on us before He even created the world.

  90. And of course, the agent of this plan is His own Son,

  91. the promised Christ,

  92. foreknown in eternity past

  93. and revealed in time and space

  94. through Jesus of Nazareth.

  95. Now, we dealt with this concept of God's foreknowledge

  96. all the way back in verse 2,

  97. where Peter affirms that believers are elect

  98. according to the foreknowledge of God the Father.

  99. Just set your eyes on it again.

  100. Maybe it will stir your memory.

  101. At the end of verse 1,

  102. we see that Peter's writing to those who are elect exiles,

  103. verse 2,

  104. according to the foreknowledge of God the Father.

  105. And here again,

  106. we see that it isn't information that God foreknows.

  107. It is individuals that God foreknows.

  108. He, Jesus Christ,

  109. was foreknown before the foundation of the world.

  110. Peter doesn't mean that God the Father

  111. looked into the future down the portals of time

  112. and decided that Jesus of Nazareth

  113. would be a suitable Messiah for His plan.

  114. That's not how this works.

  115. It's not how it has happened.

  116. That's not what Peter means to say.

  117. He means that God chose

  118. and foreordained to send His Son to be our Savior

  119. and has so orchestrated all the events of the world

  120. in time and space

  121. so that His plan would be accomplished

  122. and executed to perfection.

  123. That's what Peter means.

  124. That Jesus came and shed His precious blood

  125. as a satisfying, propitiatory atonement for our sins

  126. was always God's plan.

  127. Always.

  128. And it is God who saw it through

  129. from beginning to end.

  130. He designed it in eternity past.

  131. Christ was foreknown to be this Messiah in eternity past.

  132. And God has orchestrated the events of time and space

  133. in history

  134. so that His plan would be accomplished

  135. to absolute perfection.

  136. We might understand this then,

  137. His plan,

  138. as a divine mission.

  139. Before He even creates us,

  140. He has His mission laid out

  141. and He will execute it

  142. absolutely and definitively for His purposes.

  143. Now it was planned

  144. before the foundation of the world

  145. but it was executed in history,

  146. Peter tells us.

  147. He says that

  148. Christ was foreknown before the foundation of the world

  149. but was made manifest in the last times.

  150. This manifestation of the Christ,

  151. it refers to His incarnation

  152. through the saving work of Jesus

  153. through the cross and His resurrection.

  154. Last times here is not a reference to the day of the Lord.

  155. It's not a reference to,

  156. as Peter has said earlier in the chapter,

  157. at the day of the Lord

  158. or at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  159. That's pointing toward an end times event.

  160. That's not what He's referring to here.

  161. When He says the last times here,

  162. He's referring to the fulfillment of salvation history.

  163. Meaning,

  164. the coming of Jesus fulfills

  165. everything that was promised and pictured

  166. and foretold in the law and prophets.

  167. That's what He means.

  168. Now imagine you're a Jew

  169. in the first century.

  170. You're aware of all of those things in the Old Testament,

  171. all of the pictures and the prophecies.

  172. This Messiah is coming.

  173. And now Peter comes and he says,

  174. He has come.

  175. This is now the last times.

  176. Everything that was promised has been fulfilled.

  177. It has been fulfilled in Jesus.

  178. I want you to track with me here.

  179. God set a plan in eternity past.

  180. And in His kindness,

  181. He progressively revealed that plan

  182. through His word.

  183. Sometimes it's pictures.

  184. A lamb sacrificed at the tabernacle.

  185. Sometimes it's prophecy.

  186. Isaiah.

  187. For unto us a child is born.

  188. Unto us a son is given.

  189. Sometimes it's through types like King David

  190. in his struggle.

  191. Or King David in his role as champion of Israel and king.

  192. But God has revealed His plan progressively in His word.

  193. And then at the appointed time,

  194. the appointed time that He set

  195. according to His eternal plan in eternity past,

  196. He fulfilled that plan in Jesus,

  197. which inaugurated for us the last times.

  198. We're there.

  199. We're in them.

  200. And salvation history is fulfilled in Him.

  201. And this one, loved ones,

  202. this is what Advent and Christmas is actually about.

  203. All of those things fulfilled in God the Son.

  204. Remember Galatians 4, 4 through 7.

  205. When the fullness of time had come.

  206. Just another way of Paul saying,

  207. at the exact time that God had planned it.

  208. When the fullness of time had come.

  209. God sent forth His Son.

  210. Born of woman.

  211. Born under the law.

  212. To redeem those who were under the law.

  213. So that we might receive adoption as sons.

  214. And because you are sons,

  215. God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts.

  216. Crying, Abba, Father.

  217. So you are no longer a slave, but a son.

  218. And if you are a son, then you are an heir through God.

  219. Now we need to think about that

  220. with everything we've been covering in chapter 1 of 1 Peter.

  221. What have we been seeing here?

  222. We've been seeing the plan of God.

  223. We've been seeing the agent of that plan.

  224. Jesus Christ the Son preexistent,

  225. but brought into time and space

  226. to give His life as a ransom for us.

  227. Why?

  228. So that we, God's enemies,

  229. might become God's children.

  230. By His grace.

  231. And what comes along with us being His children?

  232. Well, exactly what Peter told us earlier in the chapter.

  233. An inheritance that's imperishable.

  234. And undefiled.

  235. And unfading.

  236. It's all about this.

  237. It's all according to plan.

  238. And the scope of that plan is eternal.

  239. God designed it in eternity past,

  240. and He's executed it in time and space,

  241. in real history.

  242. But then we must ask the next question,

  243. which is to what end?

  244. What is the benefit of this plan?

  245. So I want you to see the beneficiaries

  246. of God's plan in Christ.

  247. We've seen the scope.

  248. I want you to see the beneficiaries.

  249. Let's think about Christmas again.

  250. Some of you are working hard

  251. to keep just a few things in order

  252. for these next two weeks, right?

  253. If you can just keep a handful of things in order

  254. over the next couple of weeks,

  255. Christmas will go smoothly.

  256. And even that we understand

  257. to be something of an exercise in futility

  258. because something is inevitably going to go wrong.

  259. And that's just with a few things.

  260. What did it take for God

  261. to fulfill this eternal plan?

  262. The magnitude of His power.

  263. The magnitude of His sovereignty.

  264. To work everything out

  265. so that everything fell right into place

  266. exactly as He intended

  267. so that we could be redeemed.

  268. It's amazing.

  269. But who exactly benefits?

  270. Peter says,

  271. It is for the sake of you

  272. who through Him are believers in God

  273. who raised Him from the dead

  274. and gave Him glory.

  275. Christ was foreknown

  276. before the foundation of the world.

  277. He was made manifest

  278. in these last times

  279. for the sake of you,

  280. he says.

  281. This is gloriously profound.

  282. God has designed and executed

  283. a plan of redemption

  284. through Jesus Christ

  285. for your sake.

  286. According to His great mercy,

  287. as we have read,

  288. and overflowing from His eternal love

  289. for us,

  290. God made a ray

  291. to rescue sinners,

  292. enemies,

  293. through the precious blood

  294. of His own Son.

  295. We are the beneficiaries

  296. of God's plan.

  297. Thou who art God

  298. beyond all praising,

  299. all for love's sake,

  300. became as men,

  301. stooping so low,

  302. but sinners raising

  303. heavenward by Thine eternal plan.

  304. Thou who art God

  305. beyond all praising,

  306. all for love's sake,

  307. became as men.

  308. Who are the beneficiaries?

  309. Sinners are the beneficiaries.

  310. What could possibly explain that

  311. other than divine love?

  312. It's the only way to explain it.

  313. But then Peter includes here

  314. an essential exclusivity clause,

  315. and we can't miss it.

  316. Mustn't miss it.

  317. Contrary to so many cultural assumptions

  318. around Christmas in our society,

  319. not everyone is a beneficiary

  320. of God's plan.

  321. Peace on earth doesn't mean

  322. that we are all finally at peace with God

  323. because Jesus has come.

  324. That's not what it means.

  325. It means that the one through whom

  326. peace is accomplished

  327. has finally come.

  328. And Jesus accomplished that peace

  329. by making an atonement for our sin

  330. on the cross.

  331. And we receive this peace

  332. only through faith in his work.

  333. It's not for everyone.

  334. Peter says it's for those

  335. who believe.

  336. Just look at it.

  337. He says it plainly.

  338. It was made manifest

  339. in the last times

  340. for the sake of you

  341. who through him

  342. are believers in God.

  343. We become believers in God

  344. through Christ

  345. only when we trust

  346. in his atoning sacrifice

  347. on the cross.

  348. His resurrection

  349. from the dead.

  350. His glorification

  351. as Lord.

  352. God's plan is glorious

  353. and the benefits of it

  354. are forgiveness of sin

  355. and eternal life

  356. as his children.

  357. But you will not receive

  358. those benefits

  359. apart from exclusive faith

  360. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  361. this is the call

  362. of the gospel

  363. and it is open

  364. to you today.

  365. Jesus himself says

  366. come to me

  367. all who labor

  368. and are heavy laden

  369. and I will give you rest.

  370. Take my yoke upon you

  371. and learn of me

  372. for I am meek and lowly

  373. and you will find rest

  374. for your soul.

  375. What does he mean?

  376. What does he mean by labor

  377. and work?

  378. Jesus speaking

  379. in the context

  380. of a group

  381. that were literally

  382. laboring

  383. hoping to gain favor

  384. with God

  385. so that they could

  386. eventually find rest.

  387. Jesus says

  388. if that's you

  389. you're laboring

  390. trying to do your best

  391. and working your hardest

  392. you need to leave that

  393. behind and just come to me

  394. because it's only in me

  395. that you will find rest

  396. for your soul.

  397. The ex-exclusivity

  398. of faith

  399. in Jesus

  400. is what Peter

  401. is calling us to here.

  402. You may believe in God

  403. but unless it's

  404. through the Son

  405. unless your belief

  406. in God

  407. comes by virtue

  408. of trusting

  409. in the atonement

  410. of Christ

  411. and trusting

  412. in the resurrection

  413. of Christ

  414. and bowing

  415. before him

  416. as Lord

  417. as we read

  418. in Philippians 2

  419. you are not a Christian

  420. and these benefits

  421. do not belong to you.

  422. the beneficiaries

  423. are only those

  424. who come to

  425. faith in God

  426. through Christ.

  427. And what an amazing

  428. assurance

  429. this is

  430. for those of us

  431. who are believers

  432. in God

  433. through Christ.

  434. God's plan

  435. of redemption

  436. is definite.

  437. It's not potential.

  438. God didn't set

  439. this plan

  440. in motion

  441. in eternity past

  442. just hoping

  443. that someone

  444. would come

  445. to follow it.

  446. No,

  447. it's not a potential plan.

  448. It's a definite

  449. plan.

  450. It doesn't make

  451. our salvation

  452. possible.

  453. It makes

  454. our salvation

  455. certain.

  456. it isn't

  457. for all people.

  458. It is

  459. for those

  460. who believe

  461. who will

  462. trust in Christ.

  463. And this

  464. definite

  465. nature

  466. of God's

  467. plan

  468. is exactly

  469. what we need

  470. to understand

  471. in this time

  472. of exile,

  473. isn't it?

  474. Isn't that

  475. the larger

  476. context

  477. of why Peter

  478. is even

  479. writing this

  480. letter?

  481. If you're

  482. trusting in

  483. Christ

  484. you are

  485. God's

  486. plan.

  487. Do you

  488. see that?

  489. Can you

  490. just let that

  491. marinate for a

  492. second on your

  493. heart?

  494. This whole

  495. grand scheme,

  496. this plan

  497. that God

  498. has set

  499. in motion,

  500. you are

  501. at the

  502. heart of

  503. it if

  504. you believe.

  505. Not only

  506. was Christ

  507. foreknown

  508. before the

  509. foundation of

  510. the world,

  511. as we read

  512. in verse

  513. 2 of

  514. chapter 1,

  515. so were

  516. you.

  517. Do you

  518. understand

  519. what that

  520. means?

  521. That before

  522. you were

  523. ever even

  524. created,

  525. before God

  526. created this

  527. world,

  528. he set

  529. his saving,

  530. undying

  531. love on

  532. you.

  533. And he

  534. worked a

  535. definite plan

  536. that cannot

  537. be thwarted

  538. so that you

  539. might be

  540. saved,

  541. so that your

  542. sins might

  543. be forgiven,

  544. so that you

  545. can receive

  546. eternal life,

  547. so that you

  548. might have

  549. this future

  550. inheritance that

  551. is undefiled,

  552. that's unfading,

  553. that's imperishable,

  554. that he is

  555. keeping in

  556. heaven for

  557. you as he

  558. guards you

  559. through faith.

  560. Now,

  561. do you see the

  562. wonder of this

  563. in chapter 1?

  564. This is all

  565. God's plan,

  566. and he's working

  567. it all out

  568. according to

  569. plan,

  570. and he's

  571. executing it

  572. to perfection,

  573. and at the

  574. heart of it

  575. is you,

  576. the ones that

  577. he loves,

  578. the ones that

  579. he has done

  580. all of this

  581. in order that

  582. he might

  583. save them.

  584. Exile is a

  585. struggle.

  586. Take courage.

  587. Take courage.

  588. You are his.

  589. If you're in

  590. Christ,

  591. you belong to

  592. him,

  593. and his plan

  594. for you

  595. will not be

  596. thwarted.

  597. It cannot

  598. be.

  599. So we see

  600. the scope

  601. of God's

  602. plan in

  603. Christ.

  604. We see

  605. the beneficiaries

  606. of God's

  607. plan in

  608. Christ.

  609. Finally,

  610. I want you

  611. to see

  612. the intent

  613. of God's

  614. plan in

  615. Christ.

  616. The intent.

  617. What is

  618. the Father's

  619. ultimate

  620. intent in

  621. all of

  622. this?

  623. He designed

  624. and executed

  625. this plan.

  626. Look at the

  627. end of verse

  628. 21.

  629. So that

  630. indicates a

  631. purpose statement,

  632. doesn't it?

  633. What's the

  634. goal?

  635. So that

  636. your faith

  637. and hope

  638. are in

  639. God.

  640. As with

  641. all things,

  642. the ultimate

  643. end is

  644. God's glory.

  645. The ultimate

  646. end is God's

  647. glory.

  648. And as

  649. beneficiaries

  650. of his

  651. divine plan,

  652. his glory

  653. glory is

  654. our good.

  655. It's not

  656. just good.

  657. It is our

  658. ultimate

  659. good.

  660. God's

  661. good.

  662. In a

  663. broad sense,

  664. we need to

  665. understand this

  666. faith and hope

  667. in verse 21

  668. thematically.

  669. Peter has

  670. repeated these

  671. words over and

  672. over in chapter

  673. 1.

  674. We need to

  675. understand how

  676. they're functioning

  677. here in his

  678. letter.

  679. Think about

  680. it.

  681. The people to

  682. whom Peter

  683. wrote,

  684. they were

  685. struggling.

  686. They were

  687. struggling in

  688. what Peter

  689. called an

  690. exile.

  691. They were

  692. strangers here

  693. and they were

  694. suffering here

  695. because of

  696. that.

  697. They needed

  698. constant

  699. reminders that

  700. they actually

  701. do have

  702. true hope

  703. and that

  704. true hope

  705. is found in

  706. the gospel

  707. that they

  708. have believed.

  709. God

  710. awakened

  711. them by

  712. faith to

  713. a living

  714. hope in

  715. verse 3

  716. through the

  717. resurrection of

  718. Jesus Christ

  719. from the dead.

  720. And here

  721. again he tells

  722. us,

  723. God raised

  724. him from the

  725. dead and

  726. gave him

  727. glory so

  728. that your

  729. hope would

  730. be in

  731. him.

  732. This hope

  733. is set on

  734. a future

  735. inheritance or

  736. salvation as

  737. those God has

  738. called to be

  739. born again as

  740. his children.

  741. And that's the

  742. reality they

  743. needed to

  744. remember in

  745. exile.

  746. So Peter's

  747. first imperative

  748. when we got

  749. to verse 13

  750. was what?

  751. Set your

  752. hope fully

  753. on this

  754. grace.

  755. There it is

  756. again,

  757. hope.

  758. Set your

  759. mind fully

  760. on it.

  761. And here

  762. at the end

  763. we read that

  764. true hope

  765. through faith

  766. is central

  767. to God's

  768. eternal plan

  769. in Christ.

  770. Why did

  771. he do all

  772. of this?

  773. So that you

  774. would know

  775. hope

  776. through faith.

  777. But there's a

  778. more narrow

  779. sense in which

  780. we need to

  781. understand these

  782. words here.

  783. We need to

  784. understand them

  785. in light of

  786. the futile

  787. ways from

  788. which the

  789. precious blood

  790. of Christ

  791. has ransomed

  792. us.

  793. Look again

  794. at verse

  795. 17.

  796. Remember

  797. in 21

  798. they're not

  799. disconnected

  800. from that

  801. they're tied

  802. into it.

  803. We've just

  804. broken it up

  805. in our own

  806. study.

  807. Verse 17

  808. if you call

  809. on him as

  810. father who

  811. judges impartially

  812. According to

  813. each one's

  814. deeds!

  815. Conduct

  816. yourselves

  817. with fear

  818. throughout

  819. the time

  820. of your

  821. exile!

  822. Knowing

  823. that you

  824. were ransomed

  825. from what?

  826. The

  827. futile

  828. ways

  829. inherited

  830. by your

  831. forefathers!

  832. We need

  833. to understand

  834. this final

  835. goal,

  836. this intent

  837. in light

  838. of what

  839. Peter has

  840. just said

  841. there.

  842. The goal

  843. of this

  844. plan

  845. is so

  846. that you

  847. would stop

  848. following

  849. futile

  850. ways

  851. and instead

  852. trust in

  853. the true

  854. way.

  855. Trust in

  856. him.

  857. Trust in

  858. God

  859. through

  860. Christ.

  861. Before

  862. Christ

  863. all our

  864. hope of

  865. life and

  866. salvation

  867. is empty.

  868. It's

  869. vain.

  870. And we're

  871. blind to that

  872. reality until

  873. someone preaches

  874. the gospel

  875. and the

  876. spirit of

  877. God comes

  878. in and

  879. awakens

  880. us through

  881. that preaching

  882. of the

  883. gospel.

  884. But it's

  885. empty.

  886. That's the

  887. futile ways

  888. that Peter's

  889. talking about.

  890. Every

  891. philosophy,

  892. every

  893. religion,

  894. every

  895. tradition we

  896. followed was

  897. ineffective and

  898. it was taking

  899. us nowhere

  900. but to

  901. eternal

  902. hell.

  903. We see

  904. and we

  905. come to

  906. Christ

  907. that true

  908. hope

  909. can only

  910. be found

  911. in the

  912. true

  913. God.

  914. So God

  915. designed

  916. and executed

  917. a perfect

  918. plan of

  919. redemption

  920. through Jesus

  921. Christ so

  922. that we

  923. might have

  924. and know

  925. hope.

  926. Through the

  927. preaching of

  928. the crucifixion

  929. and resurrection

  930. and lordship

  931. of Jesus

  932. Christ,

  933. God the

  934. spirit awakens

  935. our hearts

  936. to this living

  937. hope so that

  938. our faith and

  939. hope are

  940. in God

  941. and it's

  942. all for

  943. his glory

  944. which is

  945. our good.

  946. As someone

  947. may look at

  948. this and

  949. perhaps you've

  950. had conversations

  951. as I have

  952. with skeptics

  953. and agnostics

  954. that would

  955. say this is

  956. just another

  957. example that

  958. God is just

  959. full of ego.

  960. This is a

  961. divine ego

  962. that everything

  963. that he does

  964. even supposedly

  965. for us is

  966. ultimately for

  967. his own

  968. glory.

  969. Of course

  970. we say

  971. this is not

  972. ego,

  973. this is

  974. truth.

  975. He leads

  976. us to

  977. himself

  978. because he

  979. is our

  980. ultimate

  981. good.

  982. You wouldn't

  983. let your

  984. kids continue

  985. in a lie

  986. just to

  987. give them

  988. space.

  989. You wouldn't

  990. let your

  991. kids walk

  992. themselves

  993. toward

  994. destruction

  995. just

  996. because

  997. pointing

  998. them to

  999. what is

  1000. their best

  1001. which you

  1002. know and

  1003. they don't

  1004. see would

  1005. be an

  1006. invasion of

  1007. their own

  1008. freedoms.

  1009. No.

  1010. God leads

  1011. us to

  1012. himself because

  1013. anything less

  1014. than him

  1015. is futile.

  1016. Anything less

  1017. than him

  1018. is vain.

  1019. Anything less

  1020. than him

  1021. is destruction.

  1022. No,

  1023. his glory

  1024. is our

  1025. great good.

  1026. And the

  1027. culture wars

  1028. about whether

  1029. or not you're

  1030. going to say

  1031. Merry Christmas

  1032. at the register

  1033. or happy

  1034. holidays.

  1035. Let's be

  1036. honest,

  1037. they don't

  1038. matter.

  1039. Who cares?

  1040. Who cares?

  1041. But the

  1042. exclusivity

  1043. of faith

  1044. in God

  1045. through the

  1046. crucifixion,

  1047. resurrection,

  1048. and lordship

  1049. of Jesus

  1050. Christ

  1051. is the

  1052. difference

  1053. between

  1054. heaven and

  1055. hell.

  1056. That's what

  1057. ultimately

  1058. matters in

  1059. this.

  1060. That's the

  1061. end goal.

  1062. Not that we

  1063. would influence

  1064. our culture

  1065. to acquiesce

  1066. to the

  1067. terminology

  1068. that we

  1069. prefer to

  1070. use and

  1071. all the

  1072. things,

  1073. but that

  1074. they would

  1075. actually know

  1076. that apart

  1077. from God,

  1078. they're

  1079. lost,

  1080. that apart

  1081. from him

  1082. and his

  1083. glory,

  1084. through the

  1085. sacrifice of

  1086. Christ,

  1087. they're going

  1088. to hell.

  1089. That's the

  1090. difference here.

  1091. What is

  1092. God's intent?

  1093. That we

  1094. might understand

  1095. the futile

  1096. ways of this

  1097. world are

  1098. actually futile,

  1099. and that we

  1100. might put all

  1101. of our faith

  1102. and hope in

  1103. him because

  1104. he is our

  1105. great good.

  1106. That's the

  1107. intent.

  1108. Our ransom

  1109. from futile

  1110. ways was not

  1111. an afterthought.

  1112. It wasn't

  1113. a happy

  1114. accident.

  1115. It was

  1116. God's

  1117. mission,

  1118. planned by

  1119. the Father

  1120. in eternity

  1121. past,

  1122. executed by

  1123. the Son

  1124. in time

  1125. and space,

  1126. and recognizing

  1127. this glorious

  1128. plan,

  1129. what does it

  1130. do?

  1131. It assures

  1132. our hearts

  1133. of our future

  1134. inheritance that

  1135. his plan will

  1136. not be

  1137. thwarted.

  1138. And what

  1139. else is it

  1140. doing here?

  1141. Peter says

  1142. it ought to

  1143. be motivating

  1144. your perseverance

  1145. of faith.

  1146. It ought to

  1147. be motivating

  1148. your holiness

  1149. of life

  1150. in this time

  1151. of exile.

  1152. Because look

  1153. at what he

  1154. has done

  1155. to make you

  1156. his own.

  1157. If you're a

  1158. believer in God

  1159. through Christ,

  1160. you were the

  1161. object of God's

  1162. undying love

  1163. before the world

  1164. began.

  1165. He's rescued

  1166. you from sin

  1167. with the

  1168. sinless blood

  1169. of Jesus

  1170. Christ.

  1171. And he has

  1172. awakened you

  1173. to this

  1174. living hope

  1175. through the

  1176. spirit-empowered

  1177. preaching of

  1178. the gospel.

  1179. And all of

  1180. this was

  1181. exactly according

  1182. to his

  1183. divine plan.

  1184. And what's

  1185. Peter saying

  1186. about this?

  1187. Therefore,

  1188. set your

  1189. hope fully

  1190. on grace.

  1191. Therefore,

  1192. pursue holiness

  1193. in this life.

  1194. He has set

  1195. you apart,

  1196. so live up

  1197. to your

  1198. family name.

  1199. Therefore,

  1200. conduct yourself

  1201. in the fear

  1202. of God.

  1203. In other

  1204. words,

  1205. practically,

  1206. in the way

  1207. you live

  1208. in this exile,

  1209. embrace

  1210. your identity

  1211. as a child

  1212. of God.

  1213. Someone

  1214. who's going

  1215. to stick

  1216. out.

  1217. Someone

  1218. who will

  1219. inevitably

  1220. be misunderstood.

  1221. Someone

  1222. who may

  1223. suffer,

  1224. not because

  1225. you deserve

  1226. it,

  1227. but simply

  1228. because you

  1229. don't belong

  1230. here.

  1231. Peter says

  1232. embrace that

  1233. because look

  1234. at what God

  1235. has done.

  1236. You belong

  1237. to him.

  1238. So take

  1239. courage.

  1240. Your inheritance

  1241. isn't here.

  1242. Your fulfillment,

  1243. you're not going

  1244. to find it in

  1245. this life.

  1246. So stop

  1247. trying.

  1248. Live for him.

  1249. Worship him.

  1250. Live in

  1251. holiness.

  1252. Conduct

  1253. yourselves in

  1254. fear.

  1255. Be afraid

  1256. of ever

  1257. demeaning

  1258. his name

  1259. or tarnishing

  1260. the significance

  1261. of the sacrifice

  1262. of Christ

  1263. because he

  1264. has done so

  1265. much to save

  1266. you.

  1267. So rest

  1268. and live

  1269. in fear.

  1270. God

  1271. will

  1272. be

  1273. to

  1274. He

  1275. be

  1276. to

  1277. him.

  1278. !
