  1. Psalm 30, a Psalm of David, a song at the dedication of the temple.

  2. I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up and have not let my foes rejoice over me.

  3. O Lord, my God, I cried to you for help and you have healed me.

  4. O Lord, you have brought up my soul from Sheol.

  5. You restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit.

  6. Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints.

  7. Give thanks to his holy name.

  8. For his anger is but for a moment and his favor is for a lifetime.

  9. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.

  10. As for me, I said in my prosperity, I shall never be moved.

  11. By your favor, O Lord, you had made my mountain stand strong, but then you hid your face and I was dismayed.

  12. To you, O Lord, I cry.

  13. To the Lord, I plead for mercy.

  14. What profit is there in my death if I go down to the pit?

  15. Will the dust praise you?

  16. Will it tell of your faithfulness?

  17. Hear, O Lord, and be merciful to me.

  18. O Lord, be my helper.

  19. You have turned for me my mourning into dancing.

  20. You have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness.

  21. That my glory may sing your praise and not be silent.

  22. Amen.

  23. O Lord, my God.

  24. I will give thanks to you forever.

  25. Amen.

  26. Well, how fitting is it for us to hear God's word from Psalm 30 on a special day like this one?

  27. It was King David who authored it, which is always of special interest to us.

  28. But he had a specific purpose for this song.

  29. As you'll see in the superscription, he assigned it for worship at the dedication of the temple,

  30. which was a service we read about a moment ago.

  31. It actually took place quite a bit after his death.

  32. The question is, why this song?

  33. It says absolutely nothing about the temple.

  34. Why would David write this one and put it to music and decide, even before his death,

  35. that whenever the dedication of the house of God comes,

  36. that this is what Israel should sing as part of their worship on that day?

  37. What did David want to be foremost in Israel's worship on such a momentous day?

  38. Well, it isn't a song of praise to the God who gives his people wonderful places in which they can worship.

  39. That's not what the song is.

  40. Certainly, we want to do that.

  41. We want to praise God for his provision and for his faithfulness and the kindness and goodness of his hand

  42. that would do such things, but that's not what the song praises the Lord for.

  43. It's a song of praise to the God who rescues his people from death

  44. in order that he might give them life.

  45. That's what the song is about.

  46. That's what David wanted to be foremost in Israel's mind.

  47. Now, the setting of the psalm, it reminds us that David is reflecting on a time when he was as good as dead.

  48. And as we read through it, we find that he felt he was as good as dead,

  49. not because of some enemy in his life,

  50. but because he was actually facing the judgment and the wrath of God for his sin.

  51. Eventually, he repents.

  52. And when he repented, God's anger was assuaged,

  53. and God mercifully delivered David from this death.

  54. And so, in response to this great salvation that God has given him,

  55. he says in the end he will praise God forever.

  56. His thanksgiving to God will always be on his lips for the rest of eternity

  57. for this great gift of life and salvation.

  58. So then, in the dedication of the temple,

  59. the king then is leading his people in joyful worship

  60. for a life that will never come to an end.

  61. That's the theme of the psalm.

  62. That's the summary of it.

  63. The exact moment that David is recalling in his life isn't specified here,

  64. but it's hard to ignore how closely this psalm tracks

  65. with a specific moment in David's life.

  66. You can read about it in 1 Chronicles 21.

  67. It was a specific sin of David's life recorded for us

  68. when he numbered the people.

  69. It was a census that he engaged in

  70. in order that he might determine

  71. how many mighty warriors are actually at his disposal,

  72. thinking that his victory and his triumph

  73. would come at the hands of men,

  74. which you would understand to be a great problem for the Lord.

  75. It was a grievous act of pride.

  76. It came in a season of prosperity,

  77. and that comes through in the song as well.

  78. And what we find when we read 1 Chronicles 21

  79. is that God's judgment was severe.

  80. In the end of it, 70,000 of those men that David numbered

  81. were killed by a pestilence at the hand of the judgment of God.

  82. The account ends with God mercifully staying his hand.

  83. The angel of the Lord, we're told in that chapter,

  84. is prepared to bring destruction to the city of Jerusalem.

  85. The angel has situated himself on a place,

  86. a threshing floor that belonged to a man named Ornan.

  87. David and his company, they go to where this angel is,

  88. and it's at that place that David cries out to God

  89. and begs for him to stay his anger and to show mercy

  90. and to kill no one else,

  91. not to destroy the city of Jerusalem.

  92. And God hears his cry,

  93. and he stops his judgment.

  94. And then he gives David a command

  95. that he said, build an altar on that place

  96. where the angel of the Lord was sending forth this destruction.

  97. And that's exactly what David does.

  98. He builds an altar,

  99. and then he purchases Ornan's threshing floor,

  100. and he designates the site of Ornan's threshing floor

  101. to be the place where the future house of God,

  102. the temple of Israel, would be built.

  103. It's fitting then that when we come to Psalm 30,

  104. that we would think of David's connection

  105. between this psalm and the dedication of that very temple.

  106. David wanted the people to remember on that day

  107. not that God can prosper them to build magnificent structures.

  108. He wanted them to remember on that day

  109. that God is a God of mercy

  110. and that salvation from his own wrath

  111. is what he offers his people.

  112. At the heart of the psalm is an invitation

  113. to join in the king's praise.

  114. It's a call for us to give praise to the God of life

  115. for salvation from death

  116. is given to all who will belong to him by faith.

  117. And we know that this life

  118. is provided through not David,

  119. but the greater David, Jesus,

  120. who ultimately fulfills the meaning of the psalm.

  121. So then all of King Jesus' people

  122. may then join him in his song of praise

  123. to the God of life.

  124. There's five stanzas in the psalm.

  125. I'm gonna group them together into three sections.

  126. In the first section,

  127. we see that we are to praise the God

  128. who raises the dead.

  129. We praise the God who raises the dead.

  130. Look at the first three verses.

  131. I will extol you, O Lord,

  132. for you have drawn me up

  133. and have not let my foes rejoice over me.

  134. O Lord, my God,

  135. I cried to you for help

  136. and you have healed me.

  137. O Lord, you have brought up my soul from Sheol.

  138. That's the realm of the dead.

  139. You restored me to life

  140. from among those who go down to the pit.

  141. The word pit there

  142. is gonna be used later in the psalm,

  143. but it's a different Hebrew word.

  144. It means something different later in the psalm.

  145. Here, it just means a pit,

  146. a hole in the ground

  147. where you put the dead body

  148. and you commit it back to the earth.

  149. David says,

  150. you have restored me to life from that place

  151. and from among those

  152. who are placed in the ground

  153. in order that they may decay

  154. and be corrupted.

  155. That this is a song of praise

  156. is clear from the opening determination

  157. that he will extol the Lord.

  158. You'll notice the king's praise here,

  159. David's praise,

  160. it is not at all perfunctory.

  161. He doesn't merely go through

  162. the motions of worship

  163. seen in dull

  164. and routine acts of ritual.

  165. So often we fall into Sunday by Sunday.

  166. That is not what's happening in the psalm.

  167. No, this praise is passionate.

  168. It's sincere.

  169. It's sincere.

  170. It's enthusiastic.

  171. Three times in the first three verses,

  172. nine times overall for the whole song,

  173. but three times in the first three verses,

  174. he uses the covenant name of God.

  175. One time adding in the intimately personal,

  176. my God,

  177. oh Lord,

  178. oh Yahweh,

  179. my God,

  180. you have healed me.

  181. You have brought me up.

  182. You have restored me to life.

  183. Why is that significant?

  184. What God has done for David

  185. is the outworking

  186. of his covenant faithfulness.

  187. He's fulfilling a promise

  188. to David in this.

  189. David recognizes that

  190. and he employs this covenant name

  191. that represents the faithfulness of God

  192. and the covenant of God

  193. to his king and to his people.

  194. He's fulfilled that promise

  195. and enthralled

  196. by the goodness of God,

  197. David responds

  198. with this opening shout of praise

  199. for what God has done for him.

  200. But what exactly is it

  201. that God has done for him?

  202. How has he so fulfilled his covenant?

  203. How has he so thrilled his king?

  204. He's restored him to life

  205. from certain death.

  206. David here was not merely

  207. on the brink of death,

  208. but it was such a death

  209. that comes from God's own wrath

  210. against him.

  211. It wasn't ordinary danger

  212. in which we ask God

  213. to simply rescue us

  214. from worldly enemies.

  215. God himself was the danger.

  216. God himself was the one

  217. against David

  218. in this moment.

  219. And knowing the severity of God,

  220. David writes

  221. as if he were truly dead.

  222. And yet God raised him

  223. from that death,

  224. delivering him

  225. from his own judgment.

  226. He, quote,

  227. drew him up from death

  228. as one would draw water

  229. out of a well.

  230. Why?

  231. So that David's enemies

  232. and the enemies of God

  233. would have no reason

  234. to rejoice in his death.

  235. That's not just death.

  236. That's a specific kind of death

  237. that would bring shame to David

  238. and to the people of Israel

  239. that would be able to rejoice

  240. and say,

  241. see, this God you've trusted in

  242. is worthless.

  243. That's what he's been drawn up from.

  244. It's not just about dying.

  245. It's about death by judgment.

  246. Strikingly,

  247. David speaks of it

  248. in terms of resurrection.

  249. In verse 3,

  250. God has rescued

  251. not merely his body

  252. from danger,

  253. he has rescued his soul

  254. from the realm of the dead,

  255. from the nether regions.

  256. He has restored him to life

  257. from the grave itself.

  258. And for David,

  259. this resurrection is metaphorical,

  260. but it's not at all difficult

  261. for us then to see

  262. how Jesus fulfills the psalm

  263. in its truest sense.

  264. See, anytime,

  265. this is why I say,

  266. anytime we read the psalms of David

  267. in particular,

  268. they're of special interest to us

  269. because as we look back historically

  270. to the person of David,

  271. it's as if we're seeing King David

  272. there waving at us with one hand,

  273. welcoming us in to his intimacy,

  274. to his real experience.

  275. But then with the other hand,

  276. he's pointing us to someone else.

  277. He's saying,

  278. you can see what's happening here,

  279. but it's fulfilled there.

  280. And he's pointing toward the Lord Jesus,

  281. the true and better David.

  282. And that's what's happening here in the psalm.

  283. David's life is foreshadowing

  284. the death and the resurrection

  285. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  286. So then as we praise the God

  287. who raises the dead,

  288. we must first look with praise

  289. to the resurrection of Jesus Christ

  290. for that is how we know for sure

  291. that God really is the one

  292. who raises the dead.

  293. But we can't miss where he moves

  294. in this part of the song.

  295. Verses four and five.

  296. Notice,

  297. David turns his attention to the people.

  298. Sing praises to the Lord.

  299. Lord,

  300. all you his saints,

  301. and give thanks to his holy name

  302. for his anger

  303. is but for a moment.

  304. His favor though,

  305. when you get his favor,

  306. it's not temporary

  307. like the judgment

  308. that David experienced.

  309. No,

  310. it is life.

  311. It's a lifetime.

  312. It's never ending

  313. is the implication here.

  314. And he takes it further.

  315. Weeping

  316. may last for a night,

  317. but the implication being

  318. that night will eventually

  319. come to an end

  320. and it will break forth

  321. into the joy of mourning

  322. that has no end.

  323. He invites us then

  324. to join him

  325. in this praise.

  326. A praise

  327. set on

  328. the king's experience

  329. of resurrection

  330. before it is

  331. our own experience

  332. of resurrection

  333. and life.

  334. It's amazing.

  335. It shows us

  336. that this

  337. resurrection power

  338. is extended

  339. to the king's people.

  340. We may give

  341. thanks to God

  342. ourselves

  343. because his

  344. saving benefits

  345. of mercy

  346. and favor

  347. are applied

  348. to all his saints,

  349. all those

  350. who will love

  351. and serve him

  352. and obey him.

  353. And of course

  354. this blessing,

  355. this blessed state,

  356. it doesn't preclude

  357. God's discipline.

  358. Surely we do

  359. at times

  360. face his anger

  361. and the consequences

  362. of our sin.

  363. Neither does it

  364. deny the real

  365. experience of grief.

  366. Weeping does come

  367. even for the saints.

  368. But we may rest

  369. in the fact

  370. that our trials

  371. are but momentary.

  372. the favor

  373. of the Lord,

  374. the joy

  375. of the Lord,

  376. it has no end.

  377. Even when it

  378. comes to death

  379. itself,

  380. we understand

  381. as saints

  382. of God

  383. that that death

  384. is but momentary.

  385. It is a weeping

  386. that lasts

  387. only for a night

  388. but breaks forth

  389. into life.

  390. And the life

  391. that he gives,

  392. it's true,

  393. it's unending.

  394. And those of us

  395. who have received

  396. it by faith

  397. must join

  398. the king's song

  399. of praise

  400. to God

  401. who raises

  402. the dead.

  403. This is not

  404. the only reason

  405. that we are

  406. praising God

  407. here.

  408. We praise the God

  409. who raises

  410. the dead

  411. but then we

  412. praise God

  413. who responds

  414. to our cries

  415. for mercy.

  416. Look at verses

  417. six and seven.

  418. As for me,

  419. I said in my

  420. prosperity,

  421. I shall never

  422. be moved.

  423. By your favor,

  424. O Lord,

  425. you made my

  426. mountain stand

  427. strong

  428. but then you

  429. hid your face

  430. and I was

  431. troubled.

  432. I was dismayed.

  433. In these two

  434. stanzas,

  435. David is

  436. rewinding the

  437. tape,

  438. so to speak.

  439. Now,

  440. half the room

  441. doesn't know

  442. what that means

  443. but those of you

  444. who grew up

  445. with blockbuster

  446. and cassette

  447. tapes know

  448. exactly what

  449. that means.

  450. He's rewinding

  451. the tape,

  452. so to speak,

  453. so that he

  454. might explain

  455. the circumstances

  456. that led

  457. to the praise

  458. that he gives

  459. in the first

  460. five verses.

  461. Okay,

  462. so we already

  463. know from the

  464. beginning of the

  465. song,

  466. God has given

  467. him life

  468. and it's been

  469. magnificent.

  470. Now,

  471. after he's

  472. established that,

  473. now he's

  474. rewinding and

  475. he's saying,

  476. now let me

  477. explain just a

  478. little bit more

  479. about how this

  480. all came about.

  481. Let me explain

  482. a little bit more

  483. about what

  484. actually was

  485. happening.

  486. In a time

  487. of blessing,

  488. David grew

  489. presumptuous

  490. and he acted

  491. in pride.

  492. I said in my

  493. prosperity,

  494. I shall never

  495. be moved.

  496. The implication

  497. is that he

  498. began to think

  499. of himself

  500. as self-sufficient

  501. rather than

  502. dependent on

  503. grace.

  504. God had given

  505. him tremendous

  506. security,

  507. but then

  508. suddenly he

  509. hides his

  510. face from

  511. David.

  512. He removes

  513. his blessing

  514. so that

  515. David feels

  516. as he stands

  517. against the

  518. wrath of God

  519. and the

  520. judgment of

  521. God that

  522. he is as

  523. good as

  524. dead as

  525. he stands

  526. before the

  527. Lord.

  528. Why?

  529. Because of

  530. his own

  531. sin.

  532. He found

  533. himself to

  534. be the

  535. object of

  536. God's

  537. wrath.

  538. It greatly

  539. troubled him.

  540. It should

  541. trouble you.

  542. He wasn't

  543. at the

  544. brink of

  545. death because

  546. of unfortunate

  547. circumstances.

  548. He wasn't

  549. at the

  550. brink of

  551. death because

  552. of the

  553. threat of

  554. some human

  555. enemy.

  556. He was

  557. facing the

  558. direct

  559. judgment

  560. of the

  561. holy God.

  562. And so

  563. it was

  564. with Jesus.

  565. His

  566. crucifixion,

  567. despite what

  568. some may

  569. say,

  570. it wasn't

  571. the result

  572. of

  573. misfortune.

  574. Neither

  575. was he

  576. hopelessly

  577. caught up

  578. in the

  579. machinations

  580. of Jewish

  581. leaders or

  582. the tyranny

  583. of Roman

  584. oppression and

  585. the way that

  586. they dealt

  587. with who

  588. they thought

  589. were criminals

  590. and insurrectionists

  591. of the day.

  592. That's not

  593. what's happening

  594. there.

  595. On the

  596. cross,

  597. Jesus was

  598. the direct

  599. object of

  600. God's just

  601. wrath.

  602. He didn't

  603. face the

  604. wrath of

  605. Caiaphas.

  606. He didn't

  607. face the

  608. wrath of

  609. the Pharisees.

  610. He didn't

  611. face the

  612. wrath of

  613. Pilate or

  614. of Caesar.

  615. He faced

  616. the wrath

  617. of his

  618. own father.

  619. Only he

  620. did not

  621. face that

  622. judgment as

  623. a sinner

  624. himself.

  625. He faced

  626. that judgment

  627. from God

  628. as a sin

  629. bearer.

  630. And in

  631. bearing the

  632. just wrath

  633. of God,

  634. Jesus stood

  635. in the place

  636. of sinners,

  637. in the place

  638. of sinners

  639. like David.

  640. The place

  641. of sinners

  642. like me

  643. and the

  644. place of

  645. sinners

  646. like you.

  647. How did

  648. David go

  649. from the

  650. object of

  651. God's

  652. judgment

  653. to

  654. extolling

  655. God for

  656. restoring him

  657. to life?

  658. The answer

  659. is in his

  660. prayer.

  661. Look at

  662. verses 8

  663. to 10.

  664. To you,

  665. O Lord,

  666. I cried,

  667. and to the

  668. Lord,

  669. I pled for

  670. mercy.

  671. And he

  672. gives us

  673. what he

  674. prayed.

  675. What profit

  676. is there

  677. in my

  678. death

  679. if I

  680. go down

  681. to the

  682. pit?

  683. Now,

  684. I told you

  685. earlier in

  686. the psalm,

  687. it uses

  688. the English

  689. word pit.

  690. It's a

  691. different Hebrew

  692. word.

  693. There it

  694. actually means

  695. a hole

  696. in the

  697. ground.

  698. Here it

  699. actually means

  700. corruption.

  701. So maybe

  702. you reflect

  703. on a psalm

  704. like Psalm

  705. 16,

  706. where David

  707. says you

  708. will not

  709. let your

  710. holy ones

  711. see corruption

  712. or decay.

  713. That's

  714. quoted by

  715. Peter in

  716. Acts chapter

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  717. 2,

  718. that great

  719. sermon at

  720. the day

  721. of Pentecost.

  722. He uses

  723. that to

  724. preach the

  725. resurrection

  726. of Jesus

  727. Christ.

  728. Same word

  729. David's now

  730. using here.

  731. For some

  732. reason,

  733. it's recorded

  734. for us here

  735. as pit,

  736. but it

  737. means corruption.

  738. David

  739. says,

  740. what profit

  741. is there

  742. if I go

  743. to the

  744. grave and

  745. I stay

  746. there?

  747. Will the

  748. dust

  749. praise you?

  750. Will what

  751. becomes of

  752. my body

  753. be any

  754. good to

  755. you or

  756. to anyone

  757. else,

  758. Lord?

  759. Will it

  760. tell of

  761. your

  762. faithfulness?

  763. Hear,

  764. O Lord,

  765. be merciful

  766. to me.

  767. O Lord,

  768. be my

  769. helper.

  770. David

  771. cries.

  772. You've

  773. heard that

  774. dead men

  775. tell no

  776. tales.

  777. They give

  778. no praise

  779. either.

  780. Don't be

  781. mistaken.

  782. David isn't

  783. bribing God

  784. here as if

  785. God has

  786. this desperate

  787. need to

  788. be recognized

  789. by us.

  790. He doesn't

  791. need us.

  792. That's not

  793. what David's

  794. doing.

  795. David knows

  796. that God

  797. will be

  798. glorified most

  799. in showing

  800. mercy,

  801. fulfilling his

  802. covenant,

  803. fulfilling his

  804. promise to

  805. David,

  806. and preventing

  807. him from

  808. seeing this

  809. corruption,

  810. death maybe,

  811. but not

  812. eternal death,

  813. not corruption,

  814. not decay.

  815. praying.

  816. We can hear

  817. Jesus

  818. pray this

  819. prayer,

  820. knowing that

  821. there would

  822. indeed be

  823. no profit

  824. for anyone

  825. if he were

  826. left in the

  827. grave.

  828. There would

  829. be neither

  830. glory for God,

  831. neither would

  832. there be hope

  833. for any of

  834. the rest of

  835. us.

  836. You say,

  837. when did

  838. Jesus ever

  839. pray a

  840. prayer like

  841. this?

  842. listen to

  843. the writer

  844. of Hebrews,

  845. Hebrews 5,

    Hebrews 5:7

  846. verse 7,

  847. in the days

  848. of his

  849. flesh,

  850. Jesus offered

  851. up prayers

  852. and supplications

  853. with loud

  854. cries and

  855. tears to

  856. him who

  857. was able

  858. to save

  859. him from

  860. death,

  861. and he

  862. was heard

  863. because of

  864. his reverence,

  865. and he

  866. became the

  867. source of

  868. eternal

  869. salvation

  870. to all

  871. who obey

  872. him,

  873. who obey

  874. the God

  875. who raises

  876. the dead.

  877. who will

  878. come to

  879. the God

  880. who responds

  881. to our

  882. cries for

  883. mercy.

  884. Isn't that

  885. what we're

  886. praising for

  887. in the

  888. psalm?

  889. These are

  890. the prayers

  891. that we

  892. repeatedly

  893. find God

  894. responding to

  895. throughout the

  896. Bible.

  897. Over and

  898. over,

  899. the people

  900. that we

  901. feel God

  902. see God

  903. drawing to

  904. are those

  905. who are

  906. humble and

  907. contrite and

  908. broken and

  909. poor in

  910. spirit.

  911. Remember,

  912. in Jesus'

  913. own life,

  914. he shows

  915. this,

  916. he shows

  917. the glory

  918. of God

  919. in this

  920. way as

  921. he sits

  922. with sinners

  923. and prostitutes

  924. and publicans,

  925. the people

  926. who the

  927. Jews hated.

  928. He sat

  929. with them

  930. at dinner,

  931. not to

  932. condone their

  933. life or to

  934. condone their

  935. behavior,

  936. but to

  937. call them

  938. away from

  939. it.

  940. The Pharisees,

  941. those who

  942. were high-minded

  943. about themselves,

  944. who thought

  945. much of

  946. themselves and

  947. their religion

  948. would come

  949. by and

  950. said,

  951. why on

  952. earth would

  953. you sit

  954. with them?

  955. To which

  956. he responds,

  957. a healthy

  958. man needs

  959. no physician,

  960. only a

  961. sick man.

  962. I didn't

  963. come to

  964. call those

  965. who think

  966. they're

  967. righteous.

  968. I came

  969. for those

  970. who know

  971. they're not.

  972. That's who

  973. God responds

  974. to, not

  975. to the

  976. arrogant and

  977. the prideful,

  978. those who

  979. think they

  980. have their

  981. life together,

  982. those who

  983. think they're

  984. going to

  985. be good,

  986. those who

  987. assume

  988. arrogantly

  989. that God

  990. will reward

  991. those who

  992. do their

  993. best and

  994. try their

  995. hardest.

  996. That is not

  997. the God

  998. of the

  999. Bible.

  1000. He does

  1001. not reward

  1002. you.

  1003. He gifts

  1004. you with

  1005. grace and

  1006. that grace

  1007. is received

  1008. through this

  1009. kind of

  1010. penitence.

  1011. They are the

  1012. humble,

  1013. penitent

  1014. prayers of

  1015. those who

  1016. set their

  1017. hope on

  1018. the mercy

  1019. of God,

  1020. not setting

  1021. their hope

  1022. on what

  1023. they think

  1024. may be

  1025. good in

  1026. themselves.

  1027. The Bible

  1028. echoes again

  1029. and again

  1030. that our

  1031. righteousness

  1032. is like a

  1033. filthy rag

  1034. to God.

  1035. It means

  1036. nothing to

  1037. Him.

  1038. Our

  1039. righteousness

  1040. is not

  1041. our own.

  1042. If you

  1043. have any

  1044. hope,

  1045. it won't

  1046. be because

  1047. you stand

  1048. before Him

  1049. and say,

  1050. well,

  1051. look at how

  1052. I live

  1053. my life,

  1054. God,

  1055. and He

  1056. rewards you.

  1057. It won't

  1058. happen.

  1059. We just

  1060. sang about

  1061. it.

  1062. When Satan

  1063. tempts me

  1064. to despair

  1065. and tells

  1066. me of

  1067. the guilt

  1068. within,

  1069. my real

  1070. guilt,

  1071. my own

  1072. sin,

  1073. upward I

  1074. look and

  1075. see Him

  1076. there who

  1077. made an

  1078. end to

  1079. all my

  1080. sin.

  1081. Because the

  1082. sinless

  1083. Savior died,

  1084. my sinful

  1085. soul is

  1086. counted free.

  1087. For God,

  1088. the just

  1089. one,

  1090. is satisfied

  1091. to look

  1092. on Him

  1093. and pardon

  1094. me.

  1095. Not to

  1096. look on

  1097. me,

  1098. to look

  1099. on Him.

  1100. Who

  1101. is it

  1102. that God

  1103. responds

  1104. to?

  1105. Whose

  1106. prayers

  1107. does God

  1108. actually

  1109. hear?

  1110. Not the

  1111. prayers of

  1112. the spiritually

  1113. arrogant,

  1114. but the

  1115. prayers of

  1116. the humble,

  1117. those who

  1118. cry out

  1119. for mercy.

  1120. Don't you

  1121. realize that

  1122. God invites

  1123. you to

  1124. do this?

  1125. Isaiah

  1126. 1,

  1127. 18,

  1128. come now,

  1129. let us

  1130. reason together,

  1131. says the

  1132. Lord.

  1133. Though your

  1134. sins are

  1135. like scarlet,

  1136. I will

  1137. make them

  1138. white as

  1139. snow.

  1140. He invites

  1141. you,

  1142. come to

  1143. Him to

  1144. receive this

  1145. mercy.

  1146. Micah 7,

  1147. who is a

  1148. God like

  1149. you,

  1150. pardoning

  1151. iniquity,

  1152. passing

  1153. over

  1154. transgression

  1155. for the

  1156. remnant of

  1157. your people.

  1158. He does

  1159. not retain

  1160. His anger

  1161. forever,

  1162. but He

  1163. delights

  1164. in steadfast

  1165. love.

  1166. Psalm

  1167. 130,

  1168. 3 and

  1169. 4,

  1170. if you,

  1171. O Lord,

  1172. should mark

  1173. iniquities,

  1174. if you

  1175. should count

  1176. sins,

  1177. O Lord,

  1178. who could

  1179. stand?

  1180. Answer,

  1181. no one.

  1182. But the

  1183. psalmist

  1184. continues,

  1185. but with

  1186. you there is

  1187. forgiveness,

  1188. that you

  1189. may be

  1190. feared,

  1191. that you

  1192. may be

  1193. loved and

  1194. obeyed and

  1195. revered,

  1196. not merely

  1197. because of

  1198. your greatness,

  1199. but because

  1200. of your

  1201. mercy.

  1202. Lamentations

  1203. 3,

  1204. 21 and

  1205. 23,

  1206. but this

  1207. I call

  1208. to mind

  1209. and therefore

  1210. I have

  1211. hope,

  1212. that the

  1213. steadfast

  1214. love of

  1215. the Lord

  1216. never ceases.

  1217. His

  1218. mercies

  1219. never come

  1220. to an

  1221. end,

  1222. they're

  1223. new every

  1224. morning,

  1225. great is

  1226. your

  1227. faithfulness,

  1228. O God.

  1229. Or if you

  1230. need a

  1231. New Testament

  1232. passage,

  1233. how about

  1234. Jesus'

  1235. own words

  1236. in Matthew

  1237. 11,

  1238. come to

  1239. me,

  1240. all who

  1241. labor and

  1242. are heavy

  1243. laden,

  1244. who's he

  1245. talking to?

  1246. He's talking

  1247. to all of

  1248. those people

  1249. who are

  1250. working so

  1251. hard to

  1252. earn something

  1253. from God

  1254. that they'll

  1255. never be able

  1256. to earn.

  1257. He says,

  1258. you,

  1259. come to

  1260. me,

  1261. I'll give

  1262. you rest

  1263. from those

  1264. laborers.

  1265. Come to

  1266. me and you

  1267. will find

  1268. rest for

  1269. your soul.

  1270. Perhaps you

  1271. would prefer

  1272. Paul.

  1273. Whosoever

  1274. will call upon

  1275. the name of

  1276. the Lord,

  1277. will be

  1278. saved.

  1279. Perhaps you

  1280. like Andy's

  1281. passage better

  1282. from earlier

  1283. in the

  1284. service.

  1285. If you

  1286. say you

  1287. have no

  1288. sin,

  1289. you're a

  1290. liar.

  1291. But if you

  1292. confess your

  1293. sin,

  1294. he is

  1295. faithful

  1296. and just

  1297. and will

  1298. forgive your

  1299. sin and

  1300. will cleanse

  1301. you from

  1302. all unrighteousness.

  1303. Our

  1304. righteousness is

  1305. not our

  1306. own.

  1307. It's an

  1308. alien

  1309. righteousness.

  1310. It's

  1311. imputed

  1312. onto us.

  1313. It's the

  1314. righteousness

  1315. of Christ.

  1316. As he

  1317. stands

  1318. condemned

  1319. in our

  1320. place,

  1321. he then

  1322. puts his

  1323. righteousness

  1324. on his

  1325. people.

  1326. David can

  1327. extol God

  1328. who raises

  1329. the dead

  1330. because he

  1331. had personally

  1332. experienced

  1333. God who

  1334. responds to

  1335. our cries

  1336. for mercy.

  1337. And it's

  1338. because of

  1339. this experience

  1340. that he

  1341. could affirm

  1342. that God's

  1343. anger is

  1344. indeed only

  1345. for a

  1346. moment,

  1347. but his

  1348. favor is

  1349. life.

  1350. God saves

  1351. from himself,

  1352. mind you.

  1353. He saves

  1354. from himself

  1355. all who

  1356. will acknowledge

  1357. their sin,

  1358. turn to him

  1359. in faith,

  1360. and seek

  1361. his mercy.

  1362. And those

  1363. who have

  1364. received it

  1365. can thus

  1366. join in

  1367. this song

  1368. of praise.

  1369. But you

  1370. can't join

  1371. this song

  1372. of praise

  1373. until you've

  1374. gotten there.

  1375. Notice

  1376. again,

  1377. verse 4,

  1378. who is it

  1379. that's called

  1380. to join

  1381. the king

  1382. in this

  1383. praise?

  1384. Not

  1385. everyone.

  1386. Not

  1387. everyone.

  1388. His

  1389. saints,

  1390. those who

  1391. have done

  1392. as David

  1393. has done,

  1394. those who

  1395. will look

  1396. to Christ

  1397. by faith

  1398. and will

  1399. love the

  1400. Lord and

  1401. trust him

  1402. and cry

  1403. out for

  1404. his mercy.

  1405. That's

  1406. who can

  1407. sing the

  1408. song.

  1409. So we

  1410. praise God

  1411. who raises

  1412. the dead.

  1413. We praise

  1414. God who

  1415. responds to

  1416. our cries

  1417. for mercy.

  1418. Finally,

  1419. we praise

  1420. God who

  1421. rejoices

  1422. our hearts.

  1423. Rejoices

  1424. our hearts.

  1425. Verses 11

  1426. and 12.

  1427. It's wonderful

  1428. here.

  1429. David moves

  1430. on from this

  1431. experience and

  1432. he returns

  1433. to praise.

  1434. You have

  1435. turned for

  1436. me my

  1437. mourning into

  1438. dancing.

  1439. That's why we

  1440. know David

  1441. wasn't a

  1442. Baptist.

  1443. You have

  1444. loosed my

  1445. sackcloth.

  1446. You've

  1447. clothed me

  1448. with gladness.

  1449. Why?

  1450. So that

  1451. my glory

  1452. may sing

  1453. your praise

  1454. and never

  1455. be silent.

  1456. And then

  1457. there's this

  1458. promise he

  1459. gives.

  1460. Oh Lord,

  1461. my God,

  1462. I will

  1463. give thanks

  1464. to you

  1465. forever.

  1466. God's

  1467. judgment,

  1468. it clothes

  1469. us in

  1470. grief.

  1471. You

  1472. consider

  1473. your sin

  1474. when you

  1475. really

  1476. confront

  1477. the glory

  1478. of God

  1479. and God

  1480. confronts you

  1481. with that

  1482. glory.

  1483. glory,

  1484. you should

  1485. be dismayed.

  1486. It should

  1487. bring you

  1488. grief.

  1489. That's why

  1490. our service

  1491. is structured

  1492. the way

  1493. that it

  1494. is.

  1495. We begin

  1496. by looking

  1497. to the

  1498. greatness

  1499. of God

  1500. and then

  1501. immediate

  1502. from there

  1503. we go

  1504. to humility

  1505. and a

  1506. confession

  1507. of sin.

  1508. Because to

  1509. really see

  1510. God for

  1511. who he is

  1512. means you're

  1513. really going

  1514. to see

  1515. yourself for

  1516. who you

  1517. are and

  1518. that will

  1519. produce

  1520. grief.

  1521. His

  1522. judgment,

  1523. it closes

  1524. with grief.

  1525. But when

  1526. we turn

  1527. to him

  1528. in repentance

  1529. and faith

  1530. he removes

  1531. the sackcloth

  1532. of our guilt.

  1533. But he

  1534. doesn't just

  1535. remove the

  1536. sackcloth

  1537. of our guilt

  1538. he puts

  1539. in its

  1540. place

  1541. the joy

  1542. of our

  1543. salvation.

  1544. He clothes

  1545. us then

  1546. with gladness

  1547. and the

  1548. fruit of

  1549. this gladness

  1550. is endless

  1551. praise.

  1552. Those

  1553. whom God

  1554. has made

  1555. glad

  1556. cannot

  1557. help

  1558. but sing

  1559. his praise

  1560. not merely

  1561. with their

  1562. lips

  1563. but with

  1564. their whole

  1565. being.

  1566. This

  1567. praise,

  1568. this promise

  1569. of worship

  1570. here moves

  1571. beyond merely

  1572. singing a set

  1573. of songs

  1574. on a Sunday

  1575. morning.

  1576. If that's

  1577. all this

  1578. was this

  1579. would not

  1580. be as

  1581. exciting

  1582. as it

  1583. actually

  1584. is.

  1585. It's

  1586. not just

  1587. about that.

  1588. It's a

  1589. life that

  1590. is wholly

  1591. dedicated

  1592. to God's

  1593. glory.

  1594. It is

  1595. the genuine

  1596. fruit

  1597. of real

  1598. salvation.

  1599. Not only

  1600. the song

  1601. that you

  1602. sing

  1603. but the

  1604. life

  1605. that you

  1606. live

  1607. and the

  1608. way that

  1609. you obey

  1610. him

  1611. and the

  1612. way that

  1613. you love

  1614. him

  1615. and the

  1616. way that

  1617. you love

  1618. his people

  1619. and his

  1620. church

  1621. and the

  1622. way that

  1623. you commit

  1624. yourself

  1625. to worship

  1626. and the

  1627. way that

  1628. you commit

  1629. yourself

  1630. and all

  1631. that you

  1632. do not

  1633. for your

  1634. own

  1635. pleasure

  1636. but for

  1637. the

  1638. pleasure

  1639. of the

  1640. God

  1641. who has

  1642. given

  1643. you

  1644. life.

  1645. That's

  1646. what this

  1647. is.

  1648. Consider

  1649. your own

  1650. life for

  1651. a moment.

  1652. Is your

  1653. life truly

  1654. dedicated to

  1655. God's

  1656. glory?

  1657. Not because

  1658. you think

  1659. in some

  1660. kind of

  1661. commitment

  1662. you will

  1663. earn something

  1664. from him

  1665. but because

  1666. you cannot

  1667. help but

  1668. recognize what

  1669. he has done

  1670. for you

  1671. and you

  1672. will give

  1673. your life

  1674. to his

  1675. glory

  1676. and to

  1677. his gospel.

  1678. Is that

  1679. your life?

  1680. That's the

  1681. Christian life.

  1682. That's what

  1683. it means to

  1684. be a

  1685. Christian.

  1686. It means

  1687. to recognize

  1688. the goodness

  1689. of Christ

  1690. and live

  1691. the rest

  1692. of your

  1693. days in

  1694. light of

  1695. that.

  1696. Has

  1697. he turned

  1698. your mourning

  1699. into dancing?

  1700. has

  1701. he turned

  1702. your

  1703. weeping

  1704. into joy

  1705. and your

  1706. sorrow

  1707. into

  1708. gladness?

  1709. And if

  1710. you believe

  1711. he has

  1712. the question

  1713. is

  1714. is that

  1715. actually

  1716. evidenced

  1717. in the

  1718. fruit of

  1719. the life

  1720. that you

  1721. live

  1722. and in

  1723. the way

  1724. that you

  1725. worship

  1726. or in

  1727. whether or

  1728. not you

  1729. worship

  1730. at all?

  1731. Perhaps

  1732. you've

  1733. come here

  1734. this morning

  1735. thinking that

  1736. everything is

  1737. good but

  1738. the reality

  1739. is your

  1740. life proves

  1741. that everything

  1742. is not

  1743. good.

  1744. You may

  1745. feel good

  1746. about it

  1747. but it's

  1748. not very

  1749. good.

  1750. David

  1751. ends the

  1752. song with

  1753. a promise.

  1754. He will

  1755. give thanks

  1756. to God

  1757. forever.

  1758. How can

  1759. he do

  1760. that?

  1761. Is that

  1762. not its

  1763. own kind

  1764. of presumption

  1765. and pride

  1766. that he

  1767. would expect

  1768. to live

  1769. forever?

  1770. Well that

  1771. promise is

  1772. rooted in

  1773. a promise

  1774. from God

  1775. that for

  1776. David

  1777. there will

  1778. be a

  1779. forever

  1780. in which

  1781. he may

  1782. give thanks

  1783. and he

  1784. is committed

  1785. to doing

  1786. just that.

  1787. He

  1788. anticipates

  1789. here a

  1790. more profound

  1791. salvation

  1792. that goes

  1793. beyond

  1794. whatever

  1795. earthly

  1796. experience

  1797. provides the

  1798. background

  1799. of this

  1800. song.

  1801. It's

  1802. moving

  1803. past that.

  1804. That's

  1805. not what

  1806. he has

  1807. in mind

  1808. at the

  1809. end.

  1810. Because

  1811. God

  1812. has

  1813. delivered

  1814. him

  1815. from

  1816. death

  1817. he

  1818. believes

  1819. truly

  1820. that

  1821. God

  1822. will

  1823. also

  1824. deliver

  1825. him

  1826. through

  1827. death.

  1828. This is

  1829. what Paul

  1830. is on

  1831. about.

  1832. In 1

  1833. Corinthians

  1834. 15 he

  1835. says

  1836. the last

  1837. enemy

  1838. to be

  1839. destroyed

  1840. is

  1841. death.

  1842. That

  1843. means

  1844. you

  1845. will

  1846. die.

  1847. Victory

  1848. is not

  1849. in avoiding

  1850. that.

  1851. Victory

  1852. is coming

  1853. through

  1854. that

  1855. to receive

  1856. a life

  1857. that moves

  1858. beyond

  1859. this one.

  1860. That's

  1861. what David's

  1862. on about

  1863. at the

  1864. end.

  1865. How could

  1866. we be

  1867. hopeful

  1868. for such

  1869. a thing?

  1870. The hope

  1871. of this

  1872. eternal

  1873. life

  1874. is assured

  1875. to us

  1876. in the

  1877. resurrection

  1878. of Christ

  1879. who ultimately

  1880. fulfills

  1881. David's

  1882. words here.

  1883. Christopher

  1884. Ash

  1885. writes so

  1886. helpfully,

  1887. David's

  1888. rescue from

  1889. death was

  1890. somehow

  1891. necessary for

  1892. the glory

  1893. of God

  1894. and yet

  1895. David

  1896. died.

  1897. Do you

  1898. see what

  1899. David is

  1900. promising

  1901. here is

  1902. not that

  1903. if you

  1904. just do

  1905. everything

  1906. that he's

  1907. telling you

  1908. to do

  1909. you will

  1910. never

  1911. actually

  1912. die.

  1913. That God

  1914. will never

  1915. allow you

  1916. to actually

  1917. face death

  1918. itself.

  1919. That's not

  1920. what the

  1921. psalm promises.

  1922. David

  1923. died.

  1924. So the

  1925. fulfillment

  1926. of the

  1927. psalm

  1928. has to

  1929. await

  1930. something

  1931. else.

  1932. It

  1933. awaits

  1934. actually

  1935. the

  1936. resurrection

  1937. of

  1938. Jesus

  1939. Christ.

  1940. The

  1941. hope of

  1942. this

  1943. psalm

  1944. it

  1945. doesn't

  1946. ultimately

  1947. rest in

  1948. David's

  1949. deliverance

  1950. from the

  1951. danger

  1952. of death.

  1953. It

  1954. rests in

  1955. Jesus'

  1956. resurrection

  1957. from death

  1958. itself.

  1959. That's

  1960. where the

  1961. hope is

  1962. here.

  1963. Concealed

  1964. in mystery

  1965. with David

  1966. he's but a

  1967. shadow

  1968. but the

  1969. substance

  1970. of that

  1971. shadow

  1972. in

  1973. psalm

  1974. 30

  1975. is the

  1976. Lord

  1977. Jesus.

  1978. Our

  1979. hope in

  1980. singing this

  1981. song of

  1982. praise to

  1983. God

  1984. is not

  1985. finally to

  1986. live a

  1987. longer life

  1988. to extend

  1989. our days

  1990. on earth.

  1991. That's not

  1992. why we would

  1993. sing this

  1994. song in

  1995. praise.

  1996. It's not

  1997. what we're

  1998. looking to

  1999. do.

  2000. It's not

  2001. what you

  2002. should be

  2003. looking to

  2004. do.

  2005. That's not

  2006. the heart

  2007. of it.

  2008. It is to

  2009. receive

  2010. eternal life

  2011. that comes

  2012. through faith

  2013. in the

  2014. Lord Jesus

  2015. Christ.

  2016. Who bore

  2017. our sins

  2018. in his

  2019. body on

  2020. the tree

  2021. and was

  2022. raised from

  2023. the dead

  2024. so that

  2025. your faith

  2026. and hope

  2027. are in

  2028. God

  2029. writes Peter.

  2030. Jesus

  2031. himself says

  2032. if you

  2033. remember the

  2034. story with

  2035. Martha and

  2036. Mary and

  2037. Lazarus and

  2038. Lazarus' death

  2039. and Jesus

  2040. raising him.

  2041. What is it

  2042. that he says

  2043. to Lazarus'

  2044. sister?

  2045. I am the

  2046. resurrection

  2047. and the

  2048. life.

  2049. Whoever

  2050. believes in

  2051. me

  2052. though he

  2053. die

  2054. will live.

  2055. That's the

  2056. fulfillment of

  2057. what David

  2058. writes here.

  2059. We don't

  2060. look to

  2061. David with

  2062. joy.

  2063. We look

  2064. to Jesus

  2065. with joy.

  2066. This is

  2067. what David

  2068. wanted Israel

  2069. to think

  2070. of as they

  2071. dedicated

  2072. the temple.

  2073. It's what we

  2074. should think

  2075. of every

  2076. time we

  2077. come to

  2078. this place.

  2079. Sunday

  2080. by Sunday

  2081. singing our

  2082. song of

  2083. praise to

  2084. the God

  2085. of life.

  2086. You know

  2087. that's why we

  2088. gather on

  2089. Sunday.

  2090. Right?

  2091. It's to

  2092. celebrate the

  2093. resurrection of

  2094. Jesus.

  2095. For us

  2096. every Sunday

  2097. is Easter.

  2098. It really

  2099. is.

  2100. We receive

  2101. this life

  2102. life.

  2103. We just

  2104. acknowledge

  2105. before we

  2106. close.

  2107. That if

  2108. you do

  2109. not receive

  2110. this life

  2111. and if

  2112. you go

  2113. to

  2114. corruption

  2115. and you

  2116. face

  2117. God's

  2118. eternal

  2119. wrath and

  2120. judgment,

  2121. it won't

  2122. be because

  2123. God was

  2124. mean to

  2125. you.

  2126. It will

  2127. be because

  2128. in this

  2129. moment and

  2130. in moments

  2131. like it,

  2132. when you've

  2133. heard the

  2134. truth of

  2135. the gospel,

  2136. you ignored

  2137. it and

  2138. you rejected

  2139. it and

  2140. you denied

  2141. it.

  2142. You will

  2143. go to an

  2144. eternal hell

  2145. because of

  2146. you and

  2147. no one

  2148. else and

  2149. nothing else.

  2150. But there

  2151. is hope

  2152. for you.

  2153. He extends

  2154. this offer

  2155. of life

  2156. through Jesus

  2157. to you

  2158. if you

  2159. will but

  2160. come to

  2161. him for

  2162. it.

  2163. Turn from

  2164. your sin

  2165. and self

  2166. and your

  2167. self-sufficiency

  2168. and your

  2169. self-satisfaction

  2170. and everything

  2171. you think is

  2172. good about

  2173. you and

  2174. cry out

  2175. to him

  2176. because

  2177. truly,

  2178. whoever

  2179. will call

  2180. out to

  2181. him in

  2182. Christ

  2183. will be

  2184. saved.

  2185. And if

  2186. you turn

  2187. to Christ

  2188. today,

  2189. this life

  2190. will be

  2191. yours.

  2192. And we'll

  2193. look forward

  2194. to seeing

  2195. you next

  2196. Sunday

  2197. as we

  2198. gather

  2199. again

  2200. to praise

  2201. the God

  2202. of life.
