  1. Psalm 36, to the choir master of David, the servant of the Lord.

  2. Psalm 36, to the choir master of David, the servant of David, the servant of David, the

  3. Lord sets himself in a way that is not good.

  4. He does not reject evil.

  5. Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens.

  6. Your faithfulness to the clouds.

  7. Your righteousness is like the mountains of God.

  8. Your judgments are like the great deep.

  9. Man and beast you save, O Lord.

  10. How precious is your steadfast love, O God.

  11. The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

  12. They feast on the abundance of your house.

  13. And you give them drink from the river of your delights.

  14. For with you is the fountain of life.

  15. In your light do we see light.

  16. O continue your steadfast love to those who know you.

  17. And your righteousness to the upright of heart.

  18. Let not the foot of arrogance come upon me, nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.

  19. There the evildoers lie fallen.

  20. They are thrust down and unable to rise.

  21. Amen.

  22. There's been a great many attempts through the centuries to beautifully capture the depths of God's love in a song.

  23. We've sung a few songs this morning that I've attempted to do that.

  24. My favorite song, perhaps, that really does that well was written by a man named Frederick Lehman.

  25. It was published first in its completed form in 1919, a little more than 100 years ago.

  26. Lehman was a German immigrant.

  27. He was living in Pasadena, California at the time, working in a citrus packing plant.

  28. And having written the first two verses and a chorus to the song, he couldn't find a way to complete it.

  29. A couple of years go by and he comes across a nearly thousand-year-old Hebrew poem that he felt perfectly fit for a third verse in this hymn that he had been working on for so long.

  30. So he adapted it to the song and he added it in.

  31. Now, if you can imagine living just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean, you can imagine Lehman's unique vision of God's love as he writes,

  32. Could we with ink the ocean feel, and were the skies of parchment made,

  33. were every man on earth or every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade?

  34. To write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry, nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky.

  35. Now, that is a beautifully, beautiful description of God's love for us.

  36. In Psalm 36, David is writing his own beautiful ballad of God's incomprehensible love.

  37. It's a psalm intended for corporate worship from its very inception.

  38. We see that in the superscription of the psalm.

  39. It's sent to Israel's choir master.

  40. It's meant to be sung by all of God's people as they gather together for worship.

  41. But it's sent by the servant of the Lord, a title that is teeming with messianic significance.

  42. It's really only applied in the psalms and in the scriptures to a few unique individuals,

  43. Moses and then David, and of course, them pointing forward to God's servant, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  44. David writes it and sends it to the choir master so that God's people would always sing of God's saving love

  45. displayed ultimately in the work of his promised king.

  46. Lots of people talk of God's love.

  47. Many people speak of God's love actually without seeming to truly grasp its significance, reality.

  48. You don't really understand the depths of it.

  49. Cultural ideas of divine love is really more of a view of unconditional approval,

  50. unconditional kindness, universal kindness to all people.

  51. And of course, God is kind to all his grace shows up to the righteous and the unrighteous.

  52. We know that that's true.

  53. But the cultural idea of God's love, those who would acknowledge it,

  54. is they picture more of a doting grandfather.

  55. We spent the last couple of days with Julie's dad and stepmom.

  56. They brought all of the grandkids to the Great Wolf Lodge.

  57. And you can watch, some of you have met Charles, Julie's dad.

  58. You can watch him with his grandchildren.

  59. He dotes on them.

  60. In his eyes, they've never done anything wrong.

  61. And nor would they ever do anything wrong.

  62. They've never disobeyed.

  63. There's nothing worth judging in them.

  64. He just wants to love them.

  65. He wants to give to them.

  66. He wants to provide for them in every way.

  67. Lots of people, when they're thinking of God's love,

  68. that's the picture that they have in mind.

  69. Kind of this doting grandfather who sees no real wrong in you,

  70. but just wants to shower you with all the things that your heart might desire.

  71. But that's not at all what so excited and moved the affections of King David in Psalm 36

  72. or Frederick Lehman as he reflected on the love of God in his great hymn.

  73. The love of God is actually far more profound than that.

  74. And this psalm, it gives us just a taste of the true significance of God's love.

  75. David takes us on a bit of a journey here.

  76. The first thing that he does for us is he paints for us a portrait of the human condition.

  77. A portrait of the human condition.

  78. Look with me again at the first four verses.

  79. Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart.

  80. There is no fear of God before his eyes.

  81. He flatters himself in his own eyes so that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated.

  82. The words of his mouth are trouble and deceit, and he ceased to act wisely and do good.

  83. He plots trouble while on his bed.

  84. He sets himself in a way that's not good.

  85. He does not reject evil.

  86. What is this?

  87. It's a portrait of the human condition here.

  88. David begins the song of God's glorious love in a surprisingly sour place.

  89. This opening stanza doesn't actually look to the Lord's beauty.

  90. It looks to the ugliness of human sin.

  91. And herein actually lies a key to recognizing the true wonder of God's love.

  92. You cannot truly value it until you've come to terms with the reality of your own depravity and corruption.

  93. The portrait David paints here is not a picture of the worst of sinners.

  94. This is a picture of every sinner.

  95. This is the every man.

  96. We can fiddle around with the language even.

  97. You'll notice probably there's a footnote even in the bottom of the page in your Bible on that first verse.

  98. Or actually what this literally reads as is,

  99. transgression speaks into my heart, deep into my heart, David writes.

  100. This is every one of us.

  101. It's a poetic display of the human condition.

  102. This is a picture of you here.

  103. It's a picture of me.

  104. So as we were carefully examining a portrait in an art gallery,

  105. let's just take a moment and soak in what it is that David says about this.

  106. Because this is actually the key to really understanding God's love.

  107. Five things stick out to me here.

  108. First, sin comes from within us.

  109. Sin comes from within us.

  110. Look again at verse 1.

  111. Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart.

  112. Transgression here is a crossing of a moral boundary.

  113. Speaks is interesting because this is typically the term that's used for the oracles of God.

  114. It's as if David is taking transgression, sin.

  115. He's personifying sin and letting sin take the place of God as it speaks.

  116. And where is it that this transgression and this sinfulness speaks?

  117. Deep within us.

  118. Deep within our hearts.

  119. The popular idea is that with maybe just a few exceptions,

  120. people are basically good.

  121. That if we just reach down deep inside of us,

  122. there's something good there and we can all be better and do better and make things better.

  123. The scriptures actually teach the opposite of that.

  124. It says in Jeremiah that our hearts are deceitful,

  125. that they're wicked beyond what we can even really understand.

  126. They're desperately sick,

  127. incapable,

  128. apart from grace,

  129. of being healed.

  130. And that's what David's on about here.

  131. Sin personified enters deep in our hearts,

  132. meaning it comes from within us rather than being foisted upon us from an external source.

  133. You see,

  134. we could go back to that 1 Peter chapter 5 and verse 8 that we read a few moments ago.

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  135. And we could say,

  136. okay,

  137. that's where sin really comes from.

  138. Sin is not something I do.

  139. Sin is something that the adversary forces me to do.

  140. It's that great devil made me do it that you use when you're finally getting in trouble as a kid, right?

  141. Wasn't me,

  142. mom.

  143. Satan made me do it.

  144. No,

  145. the scripture actually says the opposite here.

  146. No,

  147. it's actually coming from within you.

  148. James clarifies this for us in James chapter 1 when he says that each of us is tempted

    James 1 chapter mention

  149. when we are,

  150. Lord and enticed,

  151. not by an external source.

  152. We are Lord and enticed of our own desire,

  153. of the own lust that's in us.

  154. When we want what we want,

  155. we are then enticed to sin against the Lord.

  156. That's our nature.

  157. In other words,

  158. we sin because it's in our nature to do it.

  159. We're not sinners because we sin.

  160. We sin because we're sinners.

  161. That's what David's on about here.

  162. Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart.

  163. Sin comes from within us.

  164. The second thing that sticks out to me here is this.

  165. Our nature has no fear of God.

  166. This is our human condition before Christ apart from grace.

  167. We have no fear of God.

  168. Get the second part of verse 1.

  169. There's no fear of God before his eyes.

  170. Paul quotes this.

  171. Some of you will remember in Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  172. Paul strings along a number of different Old Testament passages.

  173. He's asserting that all people are sinful before God,

  174. that we're all sinners.

  175. This is the one he concludes with.

  176. He quotes this very phrase.

  177. There is no fear of God before their eyes.

  178. That's why we come back to this passage,

  179. and we say this isn't really about highlighting

  180. the extreme wickedness of a select few.

  181. No, this is every man.

  182. This is the human condition.

  183. Paul affirms that for us in Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  184. What is he talking about?

  185. But this is not the typical Hebrew word for fear,

  186. that reverential fear.

  187. It's a different kind of word that's being used here.

  188. This is abject terror that is meant here.

  189. David says,

  190. Christopher Ashe says,

  191. It's not simply that they have not learned reverence,

  192. but they have not learned to be properly frightened of God

  193. in his majesty and holiness.

  194. To be frightened of God is the necessary precursor to grace.

  195. Not to tremble before God

  196. is both the root and the result of transgression, he writes.

  197. And that's helpful.

  198. If we take the popular idea

  199. that God's love really is just like this doting grandfather

  200. who doesn't really see much wrong,

  201. all he wants to do is shower us

  202. with the deepest desires of our hearts,

  203. then we're completely missing a huge piece of this.

  204. In order to really understand his love,

  205. we have to understand his holiness.

  206. That's one of the biggest problems with that popular view.

  207. It minimizes, sometimes outright denies God's holiness

  208. and his just wrath against sinners.

  209. That's a fatal error.

  210. Until you tremble before his holiness,

  211. you cannot understand the fullness of his love.

  212. Third thing that sticks out here.

  213. In our human condition,

  214. our fallen nature apart from grace,

  215. we are self-deceived.

  216. Self-deceived.

  217. Verse two.

  218. He flatters himself in his own eyes

  219. so that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated.

  220. I'd encourage you to go and look

  221. at what Jonathan Edwards has said about this.

  222. He's written so many ways that we flatter ourselves

  223. in our sin.

  224. We're self-deceived,

  225. but the sense of the verse is simple.

  226. The sense of it is that we are so self-deceived

  227. that we're blind to our own lostness,

  228. never able to learn to hate our own sin.

  229. That's a common picture of us in the Bible, isn't it?

  230. That we're blind.

  231. We're in darkness.

  232. Self-deceived.

  233. The New Testament says that

  234. until the Lord returns,

  235. people will go on being deceived

  236. and deceiving themselves

  237. and deceiving others.

  238. It will just continue

  239. again and again and again.

  240. That's the human condition.

  241. Fourth thing.

  242. We're totally corrupted.

  243. Totally corrupted.

  244. Verse three.

  245. The words of his mouth

  246. are trouble and deceit.

  247. He has ceased to act wisely and do good.

  248. It's that common dual paradigm of word and deed.

  249. What's David saying?

  250. He's saying everything about us

  251. is touched by sin and depravity and corruption.

  252. There's no part of our lives

  253. where our corruption is not evidence.

  254. It's in the way that we talk.

  255. It's in the things that we do.

  256. It's everywhere.

  257. It shows itself in everything.

  258. And then the fifth thing we find in verse four

  259. that our sin is all-consuming.

  260. He plots trouble while on his bed.

  261. He sets himself in a way that's not good.

  262. That is, he digs his heels in.

  263. He digs his heels in

  264. in these things that isn't right.

  265. He doesn't reject evil in his life.

  266. He pursues his own sinfulness.

  267. Think about this picture here.

  268. He plots trouble while on his bed.

  269. There's a reason that stress and anxiety

  270. affect our sleep.

  271. We lay in bed at night.

  272. Life is quieted.

  273. Distractions are removed

  274. unless you have a three-month-old.

  275. You're alone in the privacy of your own thoughts.

  276. It's often in those moments

  277. that those thoughts begin to rage

  278. with various anxieties in our life.

  279. We're laid in your bed at night

  280. and you thought about those who crossed you

  281. or those who you're unhappy with

  282. and you began plotting,

  283. boy, if they just said this to me,

  284. this is what I would say back.

  285. Or if they just did this,

  286. this is how I would get my vengeance

  287. or this is how I'm gonna deal with this thing.

  288. It's in our nature, isn't it?

  289. It's in our nature to do it.

  290. It's in that stillness that we ought to pray,

  291. that we ought to repent.

  292. Instead, our nature plots

  293. and our hearts are further hardened

  294. in that self-deception.

  295. What's David doing here at the beginning

  296. before he ever mentions

  297. the first thing about God's love?

  298. He has to set the proper stage for that love.

  299. By saying, here's who we actually are.

  300. This is what's true of our nature,

  301. true of our human condition.

  302. And this is an essential backdrop

  303. to the dramatic description of God's love

  304. that we find in the next stanza.

  305. So that we not only see a portrait

  306. of the human condition,

  307. then we come to see the preciousness

  308. of God's steadfast love.

  309. The preciousness of it.

  310. Look at verse five.

  311. Your steadfast love, O Lord,

  312. it extends to the heavens.

  313. Your faithfulness to the clouds.

  314. Your righteousness is like the mountains of God.

  315. Your judgments are like the great deep.

  316. Man and beast you save, O Lord.

  317. How precious is your steadfast love, O God.

  318. The children of mankind take refuge

  319. in the shadow of your wings.

  320. They feast on the abundance of your house

  321. and you give them drink from the river of your delights.

  322. For with you is the fountain of life.

  323. In your light do we see light.

  324. Standing in stark contrast to man's nature

  325. is the nature of God.

  326. David lists four divine attributes here.

  327. The capstone of those,

  328. the most preeminent of those in this psalm

  329. is steadfast love.

  330. God's steadfast love,

  331. it refers particularly to his covenantal love.

  332. Throughout the Bible,

  333. we see a series of covenants

  334. that God makes with his people.

  335. All of them are pushing forward to something.

  336. They're pushing forward

  337. to a promised salvation

  338. through a savior king.

  339. And that covenant,

  340. again and again,

  341. it is steadfast

  342. in that it's unchanging.

  343. He will never renege.

  344. Even more than that,

  345. it's rooted entirely in love.

  346. How is God's covenant rooted entirely in love?

  347. In this sense,

  348. nothing else compels God

  349. to make a saving covenant with man

  350. except love.

  351. It's the only possible explanation

  352. for God's desire

  353. to provide any salvation

  354. from this sinful state at all.

  355. There's no other explanation.

  356. We can offer him nothing.

  357. We bring nothing to the table.

  358. One old preacher said,

  359. we bring nothing to our salvation

  360. except the sin that makes it necessary.

  361. He can get nothing from us

  362. that he cannot create in a moment.

  363. Why would he do it?

  364. Why would he make this covenant?

  365. Because he loves us.

  366. It's the only explanation.

  367. Flowing out of that steadfast love

  368. is seeing all of these other attributes

  369. that David mentions here.

  370. Because he loves us,

  371. because that love is steadfast,

  372. he will always be faithful

  373. to do what he's promised.

  374. Because he loves us

  375. and because that love is steadfast,

  376. he will be righteous

  377. in executing this promise.

  378. Because he loves us,

  379. because that love is steadfast,

  380. he's perfect in his judgments

  381. to establish that promise.

  382. And we see it unfolding progressively

  383. through the scriptures.

  384. Step by step by step,

  385. more and more and more of God's love

  386. do we see.

  387. Because he never changes his promise.

  388. He is faithful to it

  389. even when we are unfaithful.

  390. And all of those attributes,

  391. we're told in verse six,

  392. are working toward the salvation

  393. of those hopelessly described

  394. in the first four verses.

  395. Notice what he says.

  396. The end of verse six is amazing.

  397. All of these attributes

  398. are working to this salvation.

  399. Man and beast you save,

  400. oh Lord.

  401. What does he mean by that?

  402. He only means to say

  403. that God's salvation,

  404. what all of this is moving towards,

  405. is total in its scope.

  406. That God in salvation

  407. is doing a greater work

  408. than just providing you forgiveness.

  409. He is pushing forward

  410. to a great recreation of all things

  411. in the new heavens,

  412. in the new earth.

  413. This salvation that he provides

  414. out of his divine love

  415. is total.

  416. It's complete in all things.

  417. Paul reminds us in Romans eight,

  418. the world itself,

  419. nature itself,

  420. it groans under the curse of sin

  421. and it's awaiting

  422. the great revelation

  423. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  424. in his return

  425. when he sets all things right.

  426. Not only are you forgiven,

  427. but God is making all things new.

  428. This salvation he provides

  429. out of his divine love,

  430. it is a total and complete

  431. and precious salvation.

  432. And who is it for?

  433. It's for the people

  434. that David described

  435. in verses one to four

  436. because that's the only people

  437. that there is.

  438. That's why God's love

  439. is so great.

  440. Do you see how the psalm

  441. is now beginning to take shape?

  442. Do you see why David

  443. began where he did?

  444. Though we are wretched

  445. and totally corrupt

  446. in our nature,

  447. God is faithful

  448. and his love compels him

  449. to rescue us

  450. from sin and death.

  451. great emphasis

  452. is given in verses

  453. five and six

  454. to the extent

  455. of this covenantal love.

  456. Look at how

  457. David describes it.

  458. This steadfast love,

  459. it extends to the heavens.

  460. His faithfulness

  461. goes to the clouds.

  462. His righteousness

  463. is like the great mountains

  464. of God.

  465. His judgments

  466. are like the great deep.

  467. He's using nature

  468. as a picture

  469. of the extent

  470. of God's love.

  471. He's saying it,

  472. it's limitless.

  473. We can't plumb

  474. the depths

  475. of God's love

  476. any more than we can

  477. plumb the depths

  478. of the great deeps.

  479. His steadfast love,

  480. in other words,

  481. it has no end.

  482. I want you to think

  483. about that

  484. in relationship

  485. to the first four verses.

  486. The first four verses,

  487. we have a picture

  488. of total corruption.

  489. our sin

  490. that is in our nature,

  491. it affects

  492. every part of our lives,

  493. our thoughts,

  494. our words,

  495. our deeds,

  496. everything.

  497. It's there,

  498. it's present.

  499. But even still,

  500. God's love

  501. is greater.

  502. His steadfast love

  503. is more profound.

  504. Calvin says this,

  505. this is so good.

  506. However great

  507. the depth

  508. of wickedness

  509. which there is

  510. among men

  511. and though it

  512. seem like a flood

  513. which breaks forth

  514. and overflows

  515. the whole earth,

  516. yet still greater

  517. is the depth

  518. of God's providence

  519. by which he rightly

  520. disposes

  521. and governs

  522. all things.

  523. And what is that

  524. providence

  525. working toward?

  526. Romans 8 tells us

  527. it's all working

  528. for the good

  529. of those who love him,

  530. who are called

  531. according to his purpose.

  532. it's all working

  533. for the salvation

  534. of his people

  535. promised

  536. in his covenant.

  537. As great

  538. as your sin is,

  539. God's love

  540. is greater still.

  541. Isn't that amazing?

  542. A few of us

  543. this week

  544. had an opportunity

  545. to visit

  546. with the community

  547. pregnancy center

  548. in Lake Norman.

  549. We pray for them

  550. on a regular basis.

  551. I know you pray

  552. for them regularly.

  553. If you ever get

  554. an opportunity

  555. to go and visit

  556. at one of their

  557. open houses,

  558. I'd really encourage

  559. you to do that.

  560. Sarah Lynn kind of

  561. works as a liaison

  562. between our church

  563. and that ministry

  564. and I'm sure she has

  565. some of those dates

  566. in her mind

  567. she could share

  568. them with you

  569. and I would encourage

  570. you to do that

  571. to hear about

  572. what they're doing.

  573. In their building,

  574. the lady that gave us

  575. a tour the other day,

  576. there's a room

  577. in there

  578. where there's

  579. a giant tree

  580. painted on the wall

  581. and coming out

  582. from that tree

  583. are just a bunch

  584. of branches

  585. and the branches

  586. are extending

  587. around the other

  588. walls in the room.

  589. It's almost

  590. to the point

  591. where it begins

  592. to surround

  593. whoever comes

  594. in the room.

  595. On those branches

  596. are individual leaves

  597. and on the leaves

  598. are names,

  599. all kinds of names.

  600. Each of those names

  601. represents a child

  602. who was murdered

  603. in his or her

  604. mother's womb.

  605. they're on the wall

  606. because at some point

  607. after the abortion

  608. she said

  609. sometimes it's days,

  610. sometimes it's months,

  611. sometimes it's decades.

  612. Mother has come

  613. to them for counsel,

  614. has repented,

  615. trusted Christ,

  616. given her baby

  617. a name,

  618. given her baby

  619. a burial

  620. and they put that name

  621. up on the wall.

  622. and what has that

  623. meant to communicate

  624. to us?

  625. It's the wonderful

  626. extent of God's love.

  627. There is no sin

  628. so great

  629. that God's love

  630. is not greater still.

  631. There is no sinner

  632. so corrupt

  633. that his faithfulness

  634. is any less sure.

  635. you think of the greatest

  636. sin that you've ever

  637. committed,

  638. the greatest sinner

  639. that you know.

  640. God's love

  641. is greater still.

  642. His mercy

  643. is faithful

  644. and it's true

  645. and it's there

  646. for those women

  647. and those men

  648. who do such things.

  649. It's there for those

  650. who do even greater

  651. things than that.

  652. that's the extent

  653. of God's love.

  654. And then we get

  655. to verses 7 and 9

  656. and we see

  657. David begins

  658. to drill down

  659. even a little further

  660. to describe

  661. the benefits

  662. of God's love.

  663. So glorious

  664. is his love

  665. that the faithful

  666. finds shelter

  667. beneath the shadow

  668. of his wings.

  669. How precious

  670. is your steadfast love,

  671. O God!

  672. The children

  673. of mankind

  674. take refuge

  675. in the shadow

  676. of your wings.

  677. They feast

  678. on the abundance

  679. of your house.

  680. You give them

  681. drink from the river

  682. of your delights

  683. for with you

  684. is the fountain

  685. of life

  686. and in your light

  687. do we see light.

  688. How can this be?

  689. Sinners were condemned

  690. in verse 1

  691. for not trembling

  692. in abject fear

  693. before the Holy God.

  694. Is it not then

  695. a contradiction

  696. to just a few verses later

  697. say that we may then

  698. run to him

  699. like little chicks

  700. run beneath the wings

  701. of a mother hen?

  702. That's the picture.

  703. Is that not a contradiction?

  704. No, it's no contradiction

  705. at all.

  706. It's the benefit

  707. of God's steadfast love.

  708. Because of his limitless love

  709. those who tremble

  710. before him

  711. may also rest

  712. beneath the shadow

  713. of his wings.

  714. those who seek refuge

  715. in him

  716. feast at his table.

  717. They drink deeply

  718. of his delights.

  719. God makes his enemies

  720. to be his children

  721. and their inheritance

  722. is life

  723. and light.

  724. Those who were once

  725. self-deceived

  726. in darkness

  727. and blind

  728. now have seen light.

  729. those who were once

  730. dead

  731. in their trespasses

  732. and sins

  733. have now

  734. in his shelter

  735. been given life

  736. and life eternal.

  737. By nature

  738. we're in darkness

  739. we're deceived

  740. we're destined for death

  741. but those who seek

  742. the Lord by faith

  743. are brought to life

  744. they're delivered

  745. from darkness

  746. into his marvelous light

  747. of truth

  748. and righteousness.

  749. And thus

  750. with David

  751. we sing

  752. that the steadfast love

  753. of the Lord

  754. is not just wonderful

  755. it's precious

  756. to us.

  757. It's precious

  758. and the preciousness

  759. of that love

  760. is then to drive

  761. everything in our lives

  762. which brings us

  763. to the final section

  764. of the song.

  765. David shows us

  766. a portrait

  767. of the human condition

  768. he speaks

  769. of the preciousness

  770. of God's steadfast love

  771. and then he provides

  772. for us

  773. a prayer

  774. for the faithful

  775. a prayer

  776. that the faithful

  777. can pray

  778. together.

  779. At the end of the song

  780. he brings those

  781. other two truths

  782. together

  783. the truth

  784. that we are

  785. dreadful sinners

  786. and God's steadfast love

  787. is precious

  788. he merges them now

  789. as he calls

  790. us to action

  791. this is a prayer

  792. we're to pray

  793. but it's not a prayer

  794. that just anyone

  795. can pray

  796. or that anyone

  797. would pray

  798. it's a prayer

  799. that only those

  800. who quote

  801. know you

  802. and the quote

  803. upright in heart

  804. would ever pray

  805. they're not upright

  806. in heart

  807. because they're

  808. without sin

  809. they're upright

  810. in heart

  811. in this context

  812. because they fear

  813. the Lord

  814. and they trust

  815. in his steadfast

  816. love

  817. for salvation

  818. the prayer

  819. sounds three notes

  820. that should be

  821. routine

  822. in our own prayers

  823. first

  824. the prayer

  825. seeks God's

  826. steadfast love

  827. anew

  828. it seeks it anew

  829. look at verse 10

  830. oh continue

  831. your steadfast love

  832. to those who know you

  833. and your righteousness

  834. to the upright of heart

  835. why ask God

  836. for something

  837. that is by definition

  838. enduring

  839. and everlasting

  840. and limitless

  841. this isn't a prayer

  842. of anxiety

  843. this isn't

  844. coming from the heart

  845. of someone

  846. who is worried

  847. that maybe

  848. God will change

  849. his mind

  850. and therefore

  851. must plead with him

  852. and beg him

  853. not to change his mind

  854. and to continue

  855. in that steadfast love

  856. that's not what this is

  857. this is a prayer

  858. of faith

  859. it's a prayer

  860. of faith

  861. that God

  862. will indeed

  863. do

  864. what he said

  865. he would do

  866. Spurgeon said

  867. although

  868. a continuance

  869. of mercy

  870. is guaranteed

  871. in the covenant

  872. we are yet

  873. to make it

  874. a matter

  875. of prayer

  876. the real

  877. prayer

  878. of faith

  879. asks God

  880. to do

  881. what he's promised

  882. to do

  883. do your prayers

  884. look that way

  885. what is your heart

  886. of prayer

  887. in moments

  888. like this

  889. are you praying

  890. because you're

  891. just worried

  892. that God

  893. won't be faithful

  894. or are you crying

  895. out for God

  896. simply to fulfill

  897. his promise

  898. because your heart

  899. is sure

  900. that he will

  901. be faithful

  902. that's the difference

  903. that's what David

  904. calls us to hear

  905. he seeks

  906. God's steadfast

  907. love anew

  908. but then

  909. he does something

  910. different

  911. he acknowledges

  912. the weakness

  913. of his own flesh

  914. verse 11

  915. let not the foot

  916. of arrogance

  917. come upon me

  918. nor the hand

  919. of the wicked

  920. drive me away

  921. drive me away

  922. from what

  923. the steadfast

  924. love of the Lord

  925. from trust

  926. in his grace

  927. what is this

  928. part of the prayer

  929. it's a prayer

  930. for sanctification

  931. it's a prayer

  932. that God

  933. will sanctify

  934. us through

  935. that steadfast

  936. love

  937. so that we

  938. will not be

  939. driven

  940. to abandon

  941. the faith

  942. again says

  943. Christopher

  944. Ash

  945. at one level

  946. this is a prayer

  947. against being

  948. conquered

  949. by an ungodly

  950. power

  951. at a deeper

  952. level

  953. it's a prayer

  954. against all

  955. the forces

  956. of sin

  957. the world

  958. and the devil

  959. that wage war

  960. against our souls

  961. for the greatest

  962. danger to the church

  963. and to the individual

  964. believer

  965. is not so much

  966. that we will be

  967. persecuted

  968. by an enemy

  969. but that we will be

  970. seduced

  971. or pressured

  972. by the power

  973. of sin

  974. into denying

  975. faithfulness

  976. to Christ

  977. that's what

  978. this prayer

  979. is

  980. don't let

  981. the sin

  982. that is in me

  983. drive me away

  984. from you

  985. that's a humble

  986. prayer

  987. we read it

  988. earlier

  989. humble yourselves

  990. therefore under

  991. the mighty hand

  992. of God

  993. what is that

  994. about

  995. it's about

  996. recognizing

  997. your own

  998. tendency

  999. prone to wonder

  1000. Lord I feel it

  1001. prone to leave

  1002. the God I love

  1003. we sing

  1004. no one

  1005. ever left

  1006. the faith

  1007. who didn't

  1008. first cease

  1009. to acknowledge

  1010. their continued

  1011. susceptibility

  1012. to sin's

  1013. persuasive power

  1014. spiritual pride

  1015. is what leads

  1016. to this abandonment

  1017. and it's only

  1018. humility

  1019. and humility

  1020. and prayer

  1021. that tethers

  1022. us tightly

  1023. to faithfulness

  1024. to Christ

  1025. behooves

  1026. us then

  1027. to remain

  1028. steadfast

  1029. in this

  1030. acknowledgement

  1031. seeking always

  1032. that God

  1033. hold us

  1034. fast

  1035. in his

  1036. covenantal

  1037. love

  1038. why

  1039. because the

  1040. third note

  1041. sounded in the

  1042. prayer

  1043. verse 12

  1044. it recognizes

  1045. the end

  1046. for the

  1047. impenitent

  1048. wicked

  1049. it recognizes

  1050. their end

  1051. you have

  1052. verse 12

  1053. there

  1054. the evildoers

  1055. lie fallen

  1056. where is

  1057. there

  1058. it's

  1059. wherever the

  1060. place is

  1061. that has

  1062. driven the

  1063. singer away

  1064. from God's

  1065. steadfast

  1066. love

  1067. it is

  1068. the place

  1069. outside of

  1070. the covenant

  1071. there

  1072. evildoers

  1073. lie fallen

  1074. they are

  1075. thrust

  1076. down

  1077. and here's

  1078. this amazing

  1079. phrase

  1080. they're unable

  1081. to rise

  1082. the prayer

  1083. envisions

  1084. a final

  1085. judgment

  1086. in which

  1087. God's

  1088. wrath

  1089. will be

  1090. poured

  1091. out

  1092. on them

  1093. in

  1094. eternal

  1095. death

  1096. notice

  1097. the

  1098. contrast

  1099. between

  1100. the wicked

  1101. and the

  1102. faithful

  1103. as we've

  1104. studied

  1105. several

  1106. psalms

  1107. in a row

  1108. now

  1109. those

  1110. who

  1111. trust

  1112. in

  1113. God's

  1114. steadfast

  1115. love

  1116. will be

  1117. raised

  1118. to life

  1119. those

  1120. who

  1121. continue

  1122. in sin

  1123. are rendered

  1124. unable

  1125. to rise

  1126. their

  1127. judgment

  1128. is decisive

  1129. it's

  1130. eternal

  1131. and remembering

  1132. their end

  1133. is a

  1134. safeguard

  1135. against

  1136. joining

  1137. them

  1138. and it's

  1139. a great

  1140. motivation

  1141. for sharing

  1142. the gospel

  1143. with them

  1144. would you

  1145. just flip

  1146. a few

  1147. pages

  1148. to the

  1149. right

  1150. to

  1151. psalm

  1152. 73

  1153. this

  1154. was

  1155. Asaph

  1156. who

  1157. wrote

  1158. psalm

  1159. 73

  1160. this

  1161. was

  1162. something

  1163. of his

  1164. plight

  1165. there

  1166. in the

  1167. beginning

  1168. of the

  1169. psalm

  1170. he tells

  1171. us

  1172. that

  1173. his

  1174. feet

  1175. had

  1176. almost

  1177. stumbled

  1178. his

  1179. steps

  1180. had

  1181. nearly

  1182. slipped

  1183. and the

  1184. reason

  1185. in

  1186. verse

  1187. 3

  1188. is

  1189. because

  1190. he

  1191. was

  1192. envious

  1193. of

  1194. the

  1195. arrogant

  1196. when

  1197. he

  1198. saw

  1199. the

  1200. prosperity

  1201. of

  1202. the

  1203. wicked

  1204. in

  1205. other

  1206. words

  1207. he

  1208. looked

  1209. at

  1210. those

  1211. who

  1212. did

  1213. not

  1214. love

  1215. the

  1216. Lord

  1217. who

  1218. lived

  1219. !

  1220. the way

  1221. they

  1222. wanted

  1223. to

  1224. live

  1225. and

  1226. he

  1227. realized

  1228. that

  1229. life

  1230. seems

  1231. to be

  1232. better

  1233. for

  1234. them

  1235. you

  1236. ever

  1237. felt

  1238. that

  1239. way

  1240. of

  1241. course

  1242. you

  1243. probably

  1244. have

  1245. and

  1246. he

  1247. becomes

  1248. nigh

  1249. he's

  1250. very

  1251. nigh

  1252. to

  1253. just

  1254. leaving

  1255. the

  1256. faith

  1257. altogether

  1258. his

  1259. feet

  1260. are

  1261. about

  1262. to

  1263. slip

  1264. but

  1265. then

  1266. look

  1267. what

  1268. he

  1269. says

  1270. verse

  1271. 16

  1272. but

  1273. when

  1274. I

  1275. thought

  1276. how

  1277. to

  1278. understand

  1279. this

  1280. it

  1281. seemed

  1282. to

  1283. me

  1284. a

  1285. wearisome

  1286. task

  1287. until

  1288. I

  1289. went

  1290. into

  1291. the

  1292. sanctuary

  1293. of

  1294. God

  1295. and

  1296. then

  1297. I

  1298. discerned

  1299. their

  1300. end

  1301. and

  1302. what

  1303. is

  1304. it

  1305. that

  1306. he

  1307. discerned

  1308. verse

  1309. 18

  1310. truly

  1311. you

  1312. set

  1313. them

  1314. in

  1315. slippery

  1316. places

  1317. you

  1318. make

  1319. them

  1320. fall

  1321. to

  1322. ruin

  1323. how

  1324. they

  1325. are

  1326. destroyed

  1327. in

  1328. a

  1329. moment

  1330. swept

  1331. away

  1332. utterly

  1333. by

  1334. terrors

  1335. like

  1336. a

  1337. dream

  1338. when

  1339. one

  1340. awakes

  1341. !

  1342. oh

  1343. Lord

  1344. self

  1345. you

  1346. despise

  1347. them

  1348. as

  1349. phantoms

  1350. and

  1351. when

  1352. my

  1353. soul

  1354. was

  1355. embittered

  1356. when

  1357. I

  1358. was

  1359. pricked

  1360. in

  1361. heart

  1362. I

  1363. was

  1364. brutish

  1365. and

  1366. ignorant

  1367. I

  1368. was

  1369. like

  1370. a

  1371. beast

  1372. toward

  1373. you

  1374. but

  1375. because

  1376. he

  1377. seen

  1378. their

  1379. end

  1380. he

  1381. says

  1382. nevertheless

  1383. I

  1384. am

  1385. continually

  1386. with

  1387. you

  1388. because

  1389. you

  1390. hold

  1391. my

  1392. right

  1393. hand

  1394. you

  1395. guide

  1396. me

  1397. with

  1398. your

  1399. counsel

  1400. and

  1401. afterward

  1402. you

  1403. will

  1404. receive

  1405. me

  1406. into

  1407. glory

  1408. it's

  1409. the

  1410. same

  1411. thing

  1412. we're

  1413. seeing

  1414. in

  1415. Psalm

  1416. 36

  1417. recognizing

  1418. and

  1419. acknowledging

  1420. the

  1421. end

  1422. of

  1423. the

  1424. wicked

  1425. is

  1426. a

  1427. great

  1428. motivator

  1429. to

  1430. live

  1431. and

  1432. remain

  1433. in

  1434. holiness

  1435. and

  1436. faithfulness

  1437. to

  1438. the

  1439. Lord

  1440. God

  1441. as

  1442. he

  1443. holds

  1444. us

  1445. fast

  1446. !

  1447. God

  1448. has

  1449. actually

  1450. proven

  1451. this

  1452. steadfast

  1453. love

  1454. and

  1455. he

  1456. has

  1457. proven

  1458. it

  1459. he

  1460. proved

  1461. it

  1462. by

  1463. himself

  1464. taking

  1465. on

  1466. human

  1467. flesh

  1468. in

  1469. the

  1470. person

  1471. of

  1472. Jesus

  1473. Christ

  1474. so

  1475. that

  1476. he

  1477. might

  1478. die

  1479. in

  1480. our

  1481. place

  1482. that's

  1483. how

  1484. it's

  1485. proven

  1486. Romans

  1487. 5

  1488. God

  1489. shows

  1490. his

  1491. love

  1492. for

  1493. us

  1494. in

  1495. that

  1496. while

  1497. we

  1498. were

  1499. still

  1500. sinners

  1501. Christ

  1502. died

  1503. for

  1504. us

  1505. 1

  1506. John

  1507. 4

  1508. in

  1509. this

  1510. the

  1511. love

  1512. of

  1513. God

  1514. was

  1515. made

  1516. manifest

  1517. it

  1518. was

  1519. displayed

  1520. among

  1521. us

  1522. that

  1523. God

  1524. sent

  1525. his

  1526. only

  1527. son

  1528. into

  1529. the

  1530. world

  1531. that

  1532. we

  1533. might

  1534. live

  1535. through

  1536. him

  1537. in

  1538. this

  1539. is

  1540. love

  1541. not

  1542. that

  1543. we

  1544. have

  1545. loved

  1546. God

  1547. but

  1548. that

  1549. he

  1550. loved

  1551. us

  1552. and

  1553. how

  1554. was

  1555. that

  1556. love

  1557. proven

  1558. John

  1559. he

  1560. says

  1561. he

  1562. proved

  1563. it

  1564. because

  1565. he

  1566. sent

  1567. his

  1568. son

  1569. to

  1570. be

  1571. the

  1572. propitiation

  1573. for

  1574. our

  1575. sins

  1576. that's

  1577. such

  1578. an

  1579. important

  1580. word

  1581. his

  1582. son

  1583. completely

  1584. satisfies

  1585. his

  1586. wrath

  1587. against

  1588. sinners

  1589. described

  1590. in the

  1591. first

  1592. four

  1593. verses

  1594. of

  1595. our

  1596. psalm

  1597. that's

  1598. how

  1599. God

  1600. proves

  1601. the

  1602. love

  1603. he

  1604. doesn't

  1605. just

  1606. state

  1607. the

  1608. love

  1609. but

  1610. he

  1611. himself

  1612. becomes

  1613. a

  1614. man

  1615. in order

  1616. that

  1617. he

  1618. might

  1619. die

  1620. our

  1621. death

  1622. Tim

  1623. Keller

  1624. said it

  1625. this

  1626. way

  1627. we

  1628. are

  1629. more

  1630. sinful

  1631. and

  1632. flawed

  1633. in

  1634. ourselves

  1635. than

  1636. we

  1637. ever

  1638. dared

  1639. believe

  1640. and

  1641. yet

  1642. at

  1643. the

  1644. very

  1645. same

  1646. time

  1647. we

  1648. are

  1649. more

  1650. loved

  1651. and

  1652. accepted

  1653. in

  1654. Christ

  1655. than

  1656. we

  1657. ever

  1658. dared

  1659. hope

  1660. !

1661. who just doesn't want to do anything

1662. but tell us how great we are

1663. and give us all the things that we ask him for.

  1664. That's not love.

1665. No, the beauty of God's love

1666. is that all of us are undeserving of it.

1667. And yet he goes to tremendous lengths

1668. in order that he might redeem us and forgive us.

  1669. And that's why it's so precious.

  1670. That's why it's so precious.

1671. And so we should never stop writing songs about it.

1672. And we should never stop preaching sermons about it.

1673. Because if David's right, and I think he is,

1674. we'll never be able to exhaust

1675. the glorious love of the Lord

1676. and his steadfast love for his people.

  1677. Let's pray together.
