  1. Well, in our sermon series right now, we're talking about prayer and how we should be

  2. praying all kinds of prayers for all kinds of people.

  3. Last Sunday, we heard from the Apostle John about how we should be, we can have confidence

  4. in prayer.

  5. Or we were reminded that we can have confidence that we will receive what we ask for when

  6. we ask according to God's will, according to what God desires.

  7. And I encouraged us last Sunday to be asking that question as we pray for people, for ourselves.

  8. Lord, what is it that you want in this situation?

  9. What do you desire?

  10. What do you will?

  11. What is your will?

  12. That's a question that we often find ourselves asking.

  13. God, what is your will for my life?

  14. Especially when it comes time to make big decisions, whether that's career-related or family-related

  15. or related to the business, the family farm.

  16. God, what is your will?

  17. We know that God knows the future.

  18. We know that he knows which of the choices in front of us is best, that he desires what's

  19. best for us.

  20. Wouldn't it be nice if God just simply told us what his will is, what he wants us to do?

  21. Well, there is a place in the scriptures where he does, very pointedly, very clearly.

  22. And we're going to be looking at that this morning in 1 Thessalonians chapter 4.

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  23. So if you have your Bible with you, please open it up to 1 Thessalonians chapter 4.

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  24. 1 Thessalonians chapter 4.

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  25. We'll start in verse 1.

  26. Paul writes this to the Thessalonians.

  27. It is God's will that you should be sanctified, that you should avoid sexual immorality.

  28. That each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable,

  29. not in passionate lust like the pagans who do not know God.

  30. And that in this matter, no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.

  31. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins as we told you and warned you before.

  32. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.

  33. Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being, but God,

  34. the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.

  35. So there it is stated for us so clearly.

  36. Verse 3.

  37. It is God's will that you should be sanctified.

  38. Are you disappointed?

  39. How are you hoping that that thought was going to go?

  40. It is God's will that...

  41. As important as career and family and whether to move and what to do with the family business are,

  42. those things matter to God.

  43. But far more important than those things is our sanctification, says Paul.

  44. It is God's will that you should be sanctified.

  45. Sanctification is not a word that we use very much outside of the church, outside of the Bible even.

  46. Sanctification would be okay if our modern translations picked a different word that we use more frequently,

  47. so that we understand that.

  48. What does sanctification mean?

  49. So, since it's used by all the translations, we better figure that out.

  50. We better understand it.

  51. The word sanctification comes from the Latin word sanctus, which means holy.

  52. And that's actually the word that Paul uses here in the original language.

  53. It's the word for holy or the word holiness.

  54. In all the other places Paul uses, not all of them, but most of them,

  55. it's simply translated as holy or holiness.

  56. But here, it's translated sanctify.

  57. Because in English, we can't just turn the word holy into a verb.

  58. You know, if I'm going to talk about making something holy,

  59. I would never say, I holified that thing.

  60. But in the original language, the same word does double duty.

  61. It works as a verb and a noun.

  62. And so, in English, we have another word.

  63. We say, I sanctified that.

  64. Another way that we could say it in English is maybe I consecrated that.

  65. I made it holy.

  66. But however we translate it or paraphrase it, the meaning is essentially the same.

  67. It is God's will that you should be sanctified, that you should be set apart,

  68. that you should be made holy.

  69. It's helpful to think of the word sanctuary.

  70. It kind of has the same idea.

  71. Whether we're talking about our church sanctuary or a wildlife sanctuary,

  72. a sanctuary is a place that is set apart for a special purpose or in a special way.

  73. This room in our church building is set apart for a special purpose,

  74. for us to gather and to worship God.

  75. A wildlife sanctuary is a place that is set apart so that in that area,

  76. wildlife can flourish, not like in other areas where hunters and ATVs and everything

  77. can rip it to shreds.

  78. So we can kind of ask that question here.

  79. What does Paul really mean by sanctify?

  80. It is God's will that you should be sanctified.

  81. What's he talking about here?

  82. And we do have to be careful here.

  83. If we're not careful, we can kind of get ourselves tied up in theological knots

  84. because this word holy or holiness, sanctified, sanctification,

  85. it's used in other places.

  86. In some of those places, it's used to refer to how we are in the process of being set apart by God.

  87. In some places, it's used to describe how we are at the end of the process,

  88. set apart by God.

  89. And in some places, it's used to refer to the whole thing without discrimination.

  90. God has set us apart.

  91. And so how do we wade through this?

  92. Well, there's one question that we can just really simply ask here.

  93. Paul has said it is God's will that you should be sanctified.

  94. In what way does God want us to be set apart,

  95. to be different from others, from the rest?

  96. There's more than one true possible answer here,

  97. but this morning we're only looking at Paul's answer in this specific case.

  98. He actually tells us the kind of holiness that he's referring to.

  99. He says this,

  100. It is God's will that you should be sanctified,

  101. that you should avoid sexual immorality,

  102. that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable,

  103. not in passionate lust like the pagans who do not know God.

  104. And so we can see from the way Paul is using it,

  105. what he is talking about.

  106. What does it mean for us to be sanctified?

  107. Paul's saying it's God's will that you live differently

  108. from the rest, from others who don't know God.

  109. God desires for there to be a difference between his people and the rest who don't know him.

  110. He desires that there be a distinction in your life and how you live it

  111. from the rest of our world who doesn't know him and doesn't believe in him.

  112. Well, what is that distinction supposed to be?

  113. Paul is writing very specifically to the Thessalonian church.

  114. He's thinking through what are they going through in that city

  115. from what he's heard about the news of them,

  116. from what he knows about their church in that city.

  117. And so top of his mind in this situation is sexuality.

  118. He's thinking about their sexual conduct.

  119. As a church, what should your sexual conduct look like

  120. as you're surrounded there in Thessalonica by people who don't know God?

  121. Paul says it is God's will that you should be sanctified,

  122. that you should avoid or be far from sexual immorality.

  123. The word that he uses to describe sexual immorality is porneia.

  124. We get the word pornography from it.

  125. It's used to refer to all kinds of sexual immorality, adultery,

  126. cheating on your spouse, fornication,

  127. sex with someone that you're not married to.

  128. It's used to refer to homosexuality.

  129. It's used to refer to taking advantage of another person sexually.

  130. It's actually just kind of a cover-all reference

  131. to any kind of sexual conduct or behavior

  132. that is outside of God's good design

  133. and intention for human sexuality.

  134. Right from the beginning of the Bible

  135. all the way through to the end,

  136. we see that God's design and intention for human sexuality

  137. is that it is something that is to be enjoyed

  138. between a man and a woman

  139. who are covenanted, committed to one another in marriage.

  140. Everything outside of that is porneia,

  141. is sexual immorality

  142. against his design,

  143. against his intention.

  144. Paul actually gives us a bit of a glimpse

  145. into our world's attitude

  146. when it comes to sexuality.

  147. In verses 4 and 5,

  148. he describes how the Thessalonians should behave.

  149. He says that you should learn to control your own body

  150. in a way that is holy and honorable,

  151. not in passionate lust like the pagans

  152. who do not know God.

  153. As a general principle,

  154. those who do not know God

  155. have a different sexual ethic

  156. than we do.

  157. They are characterized

  158. by a lack of self-control

  159. and by passionate lust,

  160. says Paul.

  161. Selfish sexual desire.

  162. I have what I want.

  163. I have my sexual needs.

  164. And I want you to meet my needs,

  165. to bring pleasure to me.

  166. That's the mindset generally,

  167. Paul points to,

  168. of people in our world.

  169. You even see a hint of that

  170. down in verse 6,

  171. where he says,

  172. and that in this matter,

  173. sexuality,

  174. no one should wrong

  175. or take advantage

  176. of a brother or sister.

  177. Here we are as the family of God,

  178. but don't even think about

  179. using the closeness

  180. that we enjoy with one another

  181. as the family of God,

  182. the church,

  183. to cozy up to someone else's wife

  184. or someone else's husband.

  185. Our world's attitude

  186. is indulge

  187. sexually

  188. as far as you can,

  189. as much as you can,

  190. without running into the big problems,

  191. the big consequences.

  192. But of course,

  193. there's always consequences

  194. when we live contrary

  195. and outside of God's design.

  196. We could talk about

  197. the damage

  198. that sexual immorality

  199. does

  200. to a person's marriage.

  201. We could talk about

  202. the feelings of guilt,

  203. of having betrayed

  204. a trust

  205. between you

  206. and

  207. your spouse.

  208. We could talk about

  209. families

  210. that are ripped apart,

  211. children that grow up

  212. without

  213. a mother or father

  214. because their family

  215. was destroyed

  216. as a trust

  217. was broken.

  218. We could talk about

  219. sexual addiction

  220. and pornography

  221. use.

  222. there are always consequences

  223. when we live outside

  224. of God's

  225. intended design

  226. for sexuality.

  227. Sexuality,

  228. sexual intimacy

  229. was made

  230. to be enjoyed

  231. between a man

  232. and a woman

  233. who are married

  234. to one another.

  235. And everything

  236. outside of that

  237. God has said

  238. is off limits.

  239. That's the specific way

  240. that Paul

  241. encourages them

  242. to be

  243. sanctified,

  244. to be set apart,

  245. to live

  246. differently

  247. than the people

  248. around them

  249. who don't know God.

  250. But what I want us

  251. to see here

  252. this morning

  253. is that this is about

  254. more than sexuality.

  255. That's Paul's

  256. specific point,

  257. his specific

  258. application.

  259. But actually,

  260. God wants us

  261. to be

  262. different,

  263. to be

  264. set apart,

  265. sanctified,

  266. not just

  267. when it comes

  268. to our sexuality,

  269. but when it comes

  270. to every area

  271. of our life.

  272. He wants

  273. to touch

  274. and affect

  275. every area

  276. of our life.

  277. Being a follower

  278. of Jesus

  279. should affect

  280. every area

  281. of our life,

  282. not just

  283. this area.

  284. Whether it's

  285. eating,

  286. or drinking,

  287. or work,

  288. how we talk

  289. to one another,

  290. how we engage

  291. in relationships,

  292. God's desire

  293. is that we would

  294. be set apart,

  295. that we would

  296. be distinct

  297. in every way.

  298. And the rest

  299. of the New Testament

  300. letters are full

  301. and Jesus'

  302. teaching,

  303. full of how

  304. that affects

  305. other areas

  306. of our life.

  307. Paul's just

  308. focusing on

  309. sexual immorality

  310. here.

  311. But the principle

  312. is much bigger

  313. than that.

  314. God wants

  315. there to be

  316. a difference

  317. between how

  318. we live

  319. and how

  320. other people

  321. who don't

  322. know him

  323. live.

  324. when we hear

  325. that,

  326. when we hear

  327. the word

  328. holiness,

  329. it can be

  330. easy for a

  331. little bit

  332. of a grumbling

  333. to rise in

  334. our hearts.

  335. Oh,

  336. Pastor Josh,

  337. stop telling

  338. me about

  339. all the

  340. things that

  341. I can't

  342. do.

  343. Why does

  344. religion have

  345. to be so

  346. restrictive?

  347. My answer

  348. is that

  349. it's not.

  350. And as soon

  351. as we start

  352. thinking that

  353. it is,

  354. it's because

  355. we're not

  356. seeing clearly.

  357. We're not

  358. thinking straight.

  359. We've bought

  360. into the lie

  361. that it really

  362. is all about

  363. me

  364. and what

  365. I desire.

  366. Holiness

  367. is not just

  368. a list of

  369. do's and

  370. don'ts.

  371. It's not just

  372. a bunch of

  373. rules,

  374. rules to

  375. keep.

  376. It's so

  377. much more

  378. than that.

  379. Look at how

  380. Paul uses

  381. that word

  382. holiness

  383. just a couple

  384. verses prior

  385. to this one.

  386. Go back up

  387. to chapter

  388. 3,

  389. verse 13.

  390. Here we

  391. kind of

  392. catch Paul

  393. in the middle

  394. of a prayer

  395. for the

  396. Thessalonians.

  397. In my

  398. Bible it

  399. starts as a

  400. new sentence

  401. but it's

  402. not.

  403. It's actually

  404. a continuation.

  405. So that

  406. he may

  407. establish

  408. your hearts

  409. in

  410. blamelessness

  411. and holiness.

  412. That's what

  413. Paul wants

  414. to see.

  415. He wants

  416. to see the

  417. Thessalonians

  418. hearts

  419. established

  420. in holiness.

  421. There it is

  422. again.

  423. God desires

  424. a holy

  425. people.

  426. A people

  427. that are

  428. different.

  429. That are

  430. set apart.

  431. And so

  432. what does

  433. Paul ask

  434. God to do

  435. so that

  436. they will

  437. be

  438. holy.

  439. Look in

  440. verse 12.

  441. He says,

  442. May the

  443. Lord make

  444. your love

  445. increase

  446. and overflow

  447. for each

  448. other and

  449. for everyone

  450. else so

  451. that he

  452. may establish

  453. your heart

  454. in holiness.

  455. holiness.

  456. The defining

  457. feature of

  458. a holy

  459. life is

  460. overflowing

  461. love for

  462. each other

  463. and for

  464. everyone.

  465. It's not

  466. just a list

  467. of do's

  468. and don'ts,

  469. right and

  470. wrong.

  471. The defining

  472. characteristic

  473. of a holy

  474. person is

  475. someone who

  476. truly loves

  477. others

  478. and everyone

  479. who is

  480. overflowing

  481. with love.

  482. Now we

  483. look back

  484. at what

  485. Paul has

  486. said about

  487. sexual

  488. immorality

  489. and it

  490. all kind

  491. of makes

  492. sense.

  493. Sexual

  494. immorality

  495. is not

  496. about love.

  497. It's about

  498. lust.

  499. That's what

  500. Paul has

  501. said.

  502. Passionate

  503. lust.

  504. He said,

  505. don't take

  506. advantage of

  507. a brother

  508. or sister.

  509. that selfish

  510. sexual

  511. desire.

  512. We were

  513. not made

  514. for

  515. relationships

  516. that are

  517. characterized

  518. by lust

  519. and selfishness.

  520. I'll scratch

  521. your back

  522. if you scratch

  523. mine.

  524. We were

  525. made for

  526. relationships

  527. characterized

  528. by love,

  529. self-sacrifice,

  530. service of

  531. the other,

  532. bringing joy

  533. and pleasure

  534. to the other,

  535. not mainly

  536. to ourselves.

  537. God

  538. desires

  539. that his

  540. people

  541. be different

  542. and the

  543. defining

  544. feature

  545. of that

  546. difference

  547. is

  548. overflowing

  549. with love.

  550. That's

  551. what holiness

  552. looks like

  553. and this

  554. is how

  555. it plays

  556. out

  557. specifically

  558. in

  559. sexuality.

  560. It means

  561. sexual

  562. intimacy

  563. happens

  564. in the

  565. context

  566. of

  567. marriage.

  568. loyalty

  569. and

  570. commitment

  571. to one

  572. another.

  573. I'm going

  574. to be

  575. there

  576. for you

  577. in

  578. sickness

  579. and in

  580. health

  581. for richer

  582. or for poorer

  583. for better

  584. or for worse.

  585. Passionate

  586. lust

  587. doesn't give a

  588. rip about

  589. the other.

  590. It's all

  591. about what

  592. can I get

  593. out of

  594. this.

  595. spouse.

  596. And if

  597. you're not

  598. going to

  599. give it

  600. to me

  601. spouse

  602. then I'm

  603. going to

  604. go find

  605. it

  606. somewhere

  607. else.

  608. And if

  609. I'm not

  610. married I'm

  611. going to

  612. go online.

  613. I'm going

  614. to find it

  615. wherever I

  616. can get

  617. it and

  618. I'll take

  619. as much

  620. of it

  621. as I

  622. can get

  623. without

  624. running

  625. into those

  626. consequences

  627. that I

  628. mentioned

  629. earlier.

  630. STIs,

  631. unwanted

  632. pregnancies,

  633. emotional

  634. weight of

  635. guilt,

  636. broken

  637. family.

  638. God's

  639. saying I

  640. want to

  641. see a

  642. difference

  643. between

  644. you,

  645. my

  646. people.

  647. That's

  648. what I

  649. desire.

  650. That you

  651. should be

  652. set apart,

  653. different

  654. from those

  655. who don't

  656. know me.

  657. Not just

  658. in sexuality

  659. but as a

  660. whole,

  661. in general.

  662. A people

  663. overflowing

  664. with love.

  665. And that

  666. translating out

  667. into every

  668. area of

  669. our lives.

  670. How we

  671. work,

  672. how we

  673. play,

  674. how we

  675. relate to

  676. people,

  677. how we

  678. talk to

  679. people,

  680. what we

  681. say about

  682. others when

  683. they're not

  684. listening.

  685. All of

  686. this leads

  687. us to a

  688. question.

  689. How do

  690. we achieve

  691. this?

  692. How do

  693. we become

  694. sanctified?

  695. How do

  696. we be

  697. separated

  698. and set

  699. apart and

  700. made

  701. holy?

  702. Is that

  703. something that

  704. we do?

  705. Or is that

  706. something that

  707. God does?

  708. Well,

  709. first we have

  710. to admit

  711. there's no

  712. way that

  713. we can live

  714. this kind

  715. of holiness,

  716. this kind

  717. of overflowing

  718. with love

  719. for everyone

  720. without God's

  721. help.

  722. love.

  723. We need

  724. God's

  725. power

  726. inside of

  727. us,

  728. working,

  729. enabling us

  730. to live

  731. like this

  732. because we're

  733. hardwired,

  734. we're bent

  735. towards selfishness

  736. and sin,

  737. towards just

  738. feeling like

  739. we want

  740. this and

  741. then taking

  742. it.

  743. We can't

  744. do this on

  745. our own.

  746. We need

  747. God to do

  748. this in us

  749. and for us.

  750. He is the

  751. one who

  752. sets us

  753. apart,

  754. who makes

  755. us holy.

  756. But notice

  757. that it

  758. doesn't say

  759. it is God's

  760. will that you

  761. should be

  762. sanctified,

  763. so just

  764. sit there

  765. and relax

  766. and wait

  767. for Him

  768. to set you

  769. apart to

  770. do it.

  771. He doesn't

  772. say that.

  773. Immediately

  774. following that,

  775. He says

  776. it's God's

  777. will that you

  778. should be

  779. sanctified and

  780. so avoid

  781. sexual immorality.

  782. learn to

  783. control your

  784. own body.

  785. We have

  786. responsibility

  787. in it too.

  788. It's not

  789. just something

  790. that we

  791. just sit

  792. back and

  793. God does

  794. it to us.

  795. It's something

  796. that He

  797. works in

  798. us and

  799. we

  800. participate

  801. with Him

  802. and live

  803. it out

  804. with His

  805. enabling.

  806. I like

  807. the way

  808. that He

  809. says it

  810. to the

  811. church in

  812. Philippi.

  813. Work out

  814. your salvation

  815. with fear

  816. and trembling

  817. for it

  818. is God

  819. who works

  820. in you

  821. to will

  822. and to do

  823. according to

  824. His good

  825. pleasure.

  826. It's both.

  827. It's not

  828. just God.

  829. It's not

  830. just me.

  831. And it's

  832. not 50-50.

  833. Not God

  834. does His

  835. half and

  836. we do

  837. our half.

  838. God gets

  839. the credit

  840. for all

  841. of it

  842. and our

  843. part we

  844. can only

  845. do with

  846. His help.

  847. But it's

  848. both.

  849. Us being

  850. set apart

  851. is both

  852. God's

  853. work

  854. and ours.

  855. we actually

  856. have to

  857. make those

  858. choices

  859. to live

  860. a holy

  861. life.

  862. To say

  863. no to

  864. temptation.

  865. We're

  866. talking about

  867. prayer.

  868. So what

  869. does all

  870. this have

  871. to do

  872. with

  873. prayer?

  874. We're

  875. to pray

  876. according

  877. to God's

  878. will.

  879. prayer.

  880. And here

  881. in this

  882. passage we

  883. see at

  884. least one

  885. thing that

  886. God desires

  887. for us,

  888. that He

  889. wills for

  890. us.

  891. If you're

  892. honest,

  893. what is it

  894. that you

  895. want for

  896. your life?

  897. As you

  898. think of

  899. your life,

  900. the days

  901. ahead,

  902. the years

  903. ahead,

  904. what is it

  905. that you

  906. want for

  907. your life?

  908. how does

  909. that compare

  910. to what

  911. God has

  912. said here

  913. that He

  914. wants and

  915. that He

  916. wills for

  917. your life?

  918. God desires

  919. that we

  920. live

  921. differently,

  922. that we

  923. live lives

  924. of overflowing

  925. love towards

  926. one another,

  927. that there's

  928. a distinction

  929. between us

  930. and those

  931. who don't

  932. know Him.

  933. is that

  934. what you

  935. have been

  936. asking God

  937. to do

  938. as you

  939. pray?

  940. Is that

  941. what you've

  942. been asking

  943. God to

  944. do for

  945. other people

  946. as you

  947. think of

  948. them and

  949. the situations

  950. they're going

  951. through?

  952. God cares

  953. about what

  954. I'm going

  955. to call

  956. the smaller

  957. things,

  958. which career

  959. I have,

  960. what job

  961. I'm doing,

  962. what to do

  963. with the

  964. family farm,

  965. family

  966. relationships

  967. and decisions.

  968. God cares

  969. about those

  970. things.

  971. But even

  972. more than

  973. that,

  974. He desires

  975. that you

  976. live

  977. differently,

  978. that you

  979. be holy

  980. compared to

  981. those who

  982. don't know

  983. God.

  984. Are you

  985. asking God

  986. to do that

  987. for yourself?

  988. are you

  989. desiring

  990. that for

  991. yourself?

  992. Are you

  993. asking God

  994. to do

  995. that for

  996. others?

  997. It's great

  998. to pray that

  999. somebody who

  1000. lost their

  1001. job gets

  1002. a job,

  1003. but are you

  1004. praying that

  1005. God would

  1006. use that

  1007. situation to

  1008. set them

  1009. apart for

  1010. His purpose,

  1011. for what He

  1012. wants to do

  1013. in their life?

  1014. God is in

  1015. the business

  1016. of taking

  1017. for Himself

  1018. a people,

  1019. setting them

  1020. apart for a

  1021. special purpose

  1022. in a special

  1023. way.

  1024. Let's not

  1025. forget to

  1026. make that

  1027. part of what

  1028. we ask God

  1029. to do as we

  1030. pray all kinds

  1031. of prayers for

  1032. all kinds of

  1033. people.

  1034. Let's pray.

  1035. Father in

  1036. Heaven, we

  1037. thank You

  1038. for Your

  1039. Word.

  1040. It doesn't

  1041. always say

  1042. what we

  1043. expect or

  1044. want it to

  1045. say,

  1046. but we

  1047. trust that

  1048. You have

  1049. told us

  1050. exactly what

  1051. we need

  1052. to hear.

  1053. Lord,

  1054. even as we've

  1055. thought about

  1056. this this

  1057. morning a

  1058. little bit,

  1059. together we

  1060. invite You

  1061. to be doing

  1062. that work

  1063. in us,

  1064. setting us

  1065. apart.

  1066. We don't

  1067. want to be

  1068. the same as

  1069. everybody in

  1070. this community

  1071. who doesn't

  1072. know You.

  1073. We want to

  1074. be seen as

  1075. different because

  1076. of Your work

  1077. in us.

  1078. And so we

  1079. ask that You

  1080. would come,

  1081. that You

  1082. would change

  1083. our hearts,

  1084. that You

  1085. would fill us

  1086. with a love

  1087. for people,

  1088. that You

  1089. would give us

  1090. the courage to

  1091. say no,

  1092. to things

  1093. that are

  1094. wrong.

  1095. We desire

  1096. to please

  1097. You more

  1098. than ourselves.

  1099. You are our

  1100. God, You

  1101. are our

  1102. Savior, and

  1103. so come and

  1104. work in us

  1105. as a church.

  1106. Enable us

  1107. and empower

  1108. us to live

  1109. the different

  1110. life that You

  1111. have called us

  1112. to.

  1113. We ask this

  1114. in Christ's

  1115. name,

  1116. Amen.
