  1. Well, we're in the middle of a series on prayer, all kinds of prayer for all kinds of people.

  2. It's the Lord's desire that we pray lots for everyone.

  3. And one of the critical questions that we've been challenged to ask as we do that is,

  4. God, what do you want to do in this situation?

  5. What do you desire?

  6. What do you will for this person?

  7. The Lord wants us to pray according to his will.

  8. We probably, hopefully, all pray for ourselves on a regular basis.

  9. We hopefully pray for our families and the people in our families every day.

  10. But this morning we want to talk about our church, one another.

  11. Father, are you praying for each other here in this room and for those who aren't with us this morning regularly?

  12. We do pray every Sunday like we just did for some of the needs in our church.

  13. But I mean throughout the week.

  14. Are you praying for the people in this church?

  15. And if you are and when you do, what do you ask God to do in their lives?

  16. What are you asking God for, for one another?

  17. That's the question that we're going to be focused on this morning.

  18. What should we be asking God for as we pray for each other here in our church?

  19. God, what do you want to do in our church, in this church, in Davidson?

  20. And our answer comes to us from Paul's letter to the Ephesians.

  21. So if you have your Bibles, please open them up to Ephesians chapter 4.

  25. We're going to pick it up in verse 7.

  26. Paul writes this.

  27. He says,

  28. But to each one of us, grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.

  29. And drop down to verse 11.

  30. So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors, and teachers to equip his people for works of service,

  31. so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature,

  32. attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

  33. Then we will no longer be infants tossed back and forth by the waves and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.

  34. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.

  35. From him, the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love as each part does its work.

  36. This whole chapter is full of God's will for our church.

  37. We could go back all the way to right to the beginning of the chapter.

  38. We talked about that last summer a little bit in our One Another series.

  39. God's desire is that we would be a people who love one another.

  40. But we want to bring it in here to verse 7.

  41. Paul sets up a bit of a contrast here.

  42. He's been talking about in verse 4 how there's one body.

  43. There is one people of God in Christ.

  44. And now he sets up a bit of a contrast.

  45. Even though there's one body, there are many parts to this body.

  46. There are many gifts that have been given to the body.

  47. Verse 7.

  48. But to each one of us, grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.

  49. Paul then supports that with going back into the Old Testament.

  50. And then he has a little bit of a tangent and then comes back in verse 11.

  51. To each one of us, grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.

  52. So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors, and the teachers.

  53. There's lots that we could say about each of those different kinds of people or each of those different roles.

  54. But what strikes me is the language that Paul uses.

  55. I expected him to say, so Christ himself gave the gift of apostleship.

  56. The gift of evangelism.

  57. The gift of teaching.

  58. What is the gift that Christ has given to his church?

  59. It's not just the gift of apostleship.

  60. The gift is the people.

  61. So Christ himself gave what?

  62. The apostles.

  63. The prophets.

  64. The evangelists.

  65. The pastors and the teachers.

  66. They are the gift.

  67. They are part of the gift.

  68. And I don't think this list is meant to be all inclusive.

  69. There could have been other things that he mentioned.

  70. Other roles that he has given.

  71. But each of those is a special gift of grace that God has given to his church.

  72. We could talk about each of those, but we probably don't have time to really get into each one.

  73. And so this morning I'm just going to focus on pastors.

  74. Probably the one that we're most familiar with.

  75. The word pastor here, believe it or not, this is the only place in the whole Bible that you find the word pastor.

  76. And that might come as a surprise to some of you because it seems like every church has a pastor almost.

  77. Why does it only show up once in the whole Bible?

  78. The reason is that this word is actually, it comes from the Latin word for shepherd.

  79. The original word that Paul uses here is actually the word shepherd.

  80. Literally.

  81. He gave shepherds.

  82. It kind of goes a little bit against some of the mindset that we typically have towards pastors today.

  83. But essentially, shepherds, as he refers to them here, is that he's talking about the same role as elder or overseer in the church.

  84. 1 Peter 5, verse 1.

    1 Peter 5:1

  85. Peter says there,

  86. When Paul was meeting up with the elders from this very church, the elders of Ephesus, he kind of charged them.

  87. He said,

  88. Keep watch over yourselves and over the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers.

  89. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.

  90. And so, the word that we so often use, pastor, really traces back to the idea of shepherd.

  91. And it's really synonymous with the position of elder or overseer in the church.

  92. That's the primary work of a pastor.

  93. And in our North American culture, we've maybe kind of come to this place where we have put the pastor up on a pedestal.

  94. He's the paid professional that does the work, the job description that we've given him to do.

  95. And these elders, well, they're important, but they're kind of second rate, you know.

  96. But that's not the teaching of the New Testament.

  97. What the apostles taught and set out as the pattern is that there is to be a plurality of elders or shepherds in the local church.

  98. I appreciate the respect that people intend when they say to me, Pastor Josh.

  99. But I hope that you know that I'm not the only pastor of this church.

  100. Rob Workington, Byron Dahl, Charles Schmidt, and some of you other men have even served in the past as shepherds in this church.

  101. The Lord's desire is that there be a plurality of shepherds, of pastors, of elders.

  102. Why? Why has he given that to the church?

  103. Hmm. I want to give something special to my people.

  104. But I don't really know what to get them.

  105. So I'll just get them a box of chocolates.

  106. No.

  107. It's not a gift like that.

  108. This is a gift that Christ has thought through.

  109. A very thoughtful gift for a very specific purpose.

  110. To meet a very specific need.

  111. What is that need?

  112. Paul goes on to say,

  113. So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors, and the teachers

  114. to equip his people for works of service.

  115. Christ himself has given shepherds and those other roles as gifts to the church.

  116. Why?

  117. To equip his people for works of service.

  118. And this is another place where sometimes in our North American culture,

  119. we maybe have it a little bit backwards.

  120. We maybe see the pastor as being the one that we pay to do the works of service for us.

  121. Or the elders are the ones that we have elected so that they can do the work of the church for us.

  122. But actually it's the opposite.

  123. Christ has given shepherds to equip the rest of us to do the work of service.

  124. To serve one another well.

  125. To serve our community.

  126. And in all of these things, to serve God.

  127. And so God's desire is that each person in his church be working, be serving, be using the gifts that he has given them.

  128. Under the equipping and the coordinating and the guidance and the leadership of these roles.

  129. The shepherds.

  130. Those of you who are shepherds.

  131. God's desire is that you not only serve like the rest of us, but that you equip the rest of us as a church to serve.

  132. That you give us the tools to know how do we serve?

  133. How do we work together as a church to reach this community?

  134. That's a heavy mantle.

  135. And so if you're not currently serving as a shepherd, pray for the shepherds in this church, the elders.

  136. That they would have God's leading as they seek to do that.

  169. same way as a church it is critical that we learn to function together in a coordinated manner so

  170. that we can achieve the miracle of standing and walking and serving and blessing

  171. it's only as we work together under the guidance together under the coordination of the shepherds

  172. that we can achieve this paul goes on from here to paint a bit of a picture of what god desires for

  173. the church generally we've talked a little bit about leaders and how they've been given as a gift

  174. but to what to what end so what we're all serving together they're equipping that's great but what

  175. what's the overall big picture where are we going what is christ's desire for his church

  176. what's his will for us here in davidson paul goes on to spell this out a little bit starting in verse 12

  177. he gave the apostles the prophets the evangelists the pastors and teachers why to equip his people

  178. for works of service so that the body of christ may be built up and then here it is until we all

  179. reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the son of god and become mature attaining to the

  180. whole measure of the fullness of christ then will we we will no longer be infants tossed back and forth

  181. by the waves and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of

  182. people in their deceitful scheming instead speaking the truth in love we will grow to become in every

  183. respect the mature body of him who is the head that is christ from him the whole body joined and held

  184. together by every supporting ligament grows and builds itself up in love as each part does its work

  185. there's a lot in there there's a lot of little details in there and rather than going through

  186. every single one i'm just going to try to hit on a couple different themes what does christ desire

  187. for his people his church twice paul uses the phrase built up that they would be built up god is at work

  188. he is building something with and in his people with and in us here in the davidson community bible church

  189. he has already laid the foundation jesus has come the apostles have carried the teaching

  190. of christ and the witness of christ and now he is building something

  191. there is the theme here of growth from infancy to adulthood it's a very interesting way to describe what

  192. what what he longs to see happen

  193. we're kind of like infants he implies in verse 14 then we will no longer be infants we're like

  194. the seed form that has now sprouted the plant that is just now blossomed

  195. but christ's desire is that as a as a body as a people that we would grow to become the full adult mature

  196. body people that he wants for us to be

  197. what does that maturity look like paul gives a number of uh indicators here

  198. a group of people that's characterized by

  199. a group of people that's characterized by speaking the truth to one another

  200. a group of people that is well coordinated and functions well together like it like an adult body does

  201. we're no longer learning how to walk and how to move we work together we're coordinated

  202. maturity the word mature is used a couple of times

  203. fully developed i love this phrase in verse 13 he says

  204. and become mature attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of christ

  205. you can just think of the picture of kind of that the little growth chart that we do for our kids on the wall as they grow up

  206. well eventually there's a line and that's that's it they're fully grown fully adult

  207. that's christ's desire for his people that we reach the full maturity as a group

  208. where the fullness of christ we we match up to to the fullness of christ

  209. we come to share in that measure of his glory that he is going to give us

  210. it's a beautiful picture

  211. there's also a theme here of a ship out at sea paul likes to use his metaphors and he likes to use them

  212. one after the other sometimes

  213. you get this picture of a ship out in the sea the waves are coming and the winds blowing and it's just going

  214. all over the place and he uses this as a metaphor to describe how

  215. some christians probably that he's known and seen some churches even

  216. you know a person rolls into town with a new teaching

  217. that takes them away from the teaching of christ and they just kind of get blown along and go with it

  218. the culture says this sure let's do that the pressures of society of the of local local cities whatever

  219. say you go in this direction so we just okay that sounds great

  220. paul's desire is that we not be like that but that we be anchored in the truth

  221. in the faith and in the knowledge of the son of god he says

  222. so that when those things come they just go under the boat we're not moving

  223. this is our original conviction this is the truth

  224. jesus is the way the truth and the life

  225. and it doesn't matter what anybody else says over here or if somebody else teaches something contrary

  226. we're not going with that flow that wind isn't taking us anywhere we're anchored here

  227. in christ that's what he longs to see for us as a church

  228. to summarize i'm just going to quickly read through some of these and just highlight on a few words

  229. what christ wills for his people

  230. is for them to be built up

  231. to reach unity

  232. no divisions

  233. faith filled

  234. knowing the son of god

  235. maturity

  236. steadfastness

  237. ability with to withstand

  238. well coordinated

  239. functioning together

  240. in truthfulness

  241. in love

  242. what a beautiful picture

  243. in a moment we'll

  244. talk about how this should inform our prayers

  245. but before we get there

  246. i just want to say

  247. the thing that hit me the most

  248. this week as i was preparing this message

  249. is simply

  250. isn't it amazing

  251. that

  252. god wants to do this

  253. for us

  254. that he wants to make us part of a people

  255. a body

  256. like this

  257. as undeserving as we are

  258. this whole week i've been without my family

  259. they've been in valley view

  260. enjoying time with

  261. um

  262. jen's parents

  263. and

  264. throughout this whole week i've been thinking

  265. about

  266. how can i be a better husband

  267. how can i be a better father

  268. what can we do together

  269. with them when they come back

  270. i've been tucking away some ideas

  271. making some plans

  272. and then all of a sudden

  273. as i was reading this

  274. it just hit me

  275. the lord

  276. has made some plans

  277. for us

  278. as his

  279. church

  280. and how things are going to be

  281. and he is working to bring us to that

  282. isn't that amazing

  283. that we have a god

  284. who loves us

  285. like that

  286. that he has

  287. come up with this plan

  288. of what we will look like

  289. one day

  290. when we're fully grown

  291. and that he is moving us along towards that

  292. what a gift

  293. what love

  294. that we as sinners

  295. as people who have

  296. shaken our fist against him

  297. rejected him

  298. that he has

  299. desired to save us

  300. and to pull us into this incredible family

  301. of his

  302. to be his people

  303. and so as we pray

  304. for

  305. one another

  306. as a church

  307. of course we pray

  308. for

  309. the typical things

  310. matters of

  311. health

  312. and well-being

  313. but what if we

  314. started to use

  315. this picture

  316. and this isn't the only picture

  317. there's

  318. lots of pictures

  319. throughout

  320. scripture

  321. but what if we started to use

  322. this picture

  323. to inform

  324. how we pray

  325. for one another

  326. I've already mentioned about

  327. how we should pray

  328. for the shepherds

  329. in the church

  330. that they would

  331. equip

  332. and lead well

  333. but we can pray

  334. for one another

  335. that each person

  336. would be valued

  337. by

  338. every other person

  339. in the church

  340. that they would

  341. use their gifts

  342. that they would

  343. serve well

  344. that we would

  345. be a church

  346. characterized

  347. by love

  348. and by truth

  349. pray for our church

  350. that we wouldn't be

  351. tossed

  352. by the storm

  353. but that we would

  354. hold fast

  355. to Christ

  356. pray that you

  357. that each person

  358. in our church

  359. would

  360. understand

  361. how

  362. what kind of

  363. part

  364. they are

  365. what gift

  366. or grace

  367. that God

  368. has given them

  369. and how they

  370. can use that

  371. to serve

  372. because it's only

  373. as each part

  374. does its work

  375. that the body

  376. can be well

  377. coordinated

  378. and well functioning

  379. that's true

  380. of the church

  381. as a whole

  382. and that's true

  383. of our church

  384. here in Davidson

  385. and so

  386. last week

  387. I encouraged you

  388. to

  389. make a bit

  390. of a list

  391. if you need

  392. to

  393. to pray

  394. for your family

  395. this week

  396. I want to

  397. encourage you

  398. to

  399. make a regular

  400. habit

  401. of praying

  402. for one another

  403. in the church

  404. there's a

  405. couple easy

  406. ways to do

  407. that

  408. first of all

  409. we have a new

  410. directory

  411. that's going to

  412. be ready

  413. soon here

  414. that's one

  415. way to do it

  416. you have your list

  417. right there

  418. you can just

  419. work your way

  420. through it

  421. we can do

  422. a few

  423. families each

  424. week

  425. or a family

  426. every day

  427. however you

  428. decide

  429. one of the

  430. things that's

  431. really been

  432. helping me

  433. that I use

  434. I use an app

  435. called

  436. prayer mate

  437. I found this

  438. online

  439. by recommendation

  440. from someone

  441. and you can

  442. just set up

  443. your lists

  444. of different

  445. people in your

  446. life

  447. family

  448. extended family

  449. church

  450. missionaries

  451. and every

  452. time you

  453. open it up

  454. it gives you

  455. a fresh set

  456. of people

  457. drawn from

  458. all of those

  459. lists so that

  460. you can pray

  461. for those

  462. people and

  463. ensure that

  464. you pray

  465. for everyone

  466. and it's

  467. good when

  468. we pray

  469. for everyone

  470. in our

  471. church

  472. by name

  473. that we

  474. take time

  475. to think

  476. about that

  477. person

  478. and what

  479. God wants

  480. for that

  481. person

  482. and so

  483. I encourage

  484. you if

  485. that's

  486. something you

  487. think might

  488. help you

  489. download that

  490. fill it up

  491. with the

  492. names of

  493. the people

  494. in our

  495. church

  496. and as

  497. I have

  498. done this

  499. I found

  500. it to be

  501. very helpful

  502. because it's

  503. easy sometimes

  504. to just get

  505. into the rut

  506. of oh I'm

  507. supposed to be

  508. praying for

  509. so and so

  510. so God

  511. please be

  512. with Charles

  513. and Ellie

  514. bless them

  515. be with them

  516. bless them

  517. and be with

  518. them but

  519. we don't

  520. really get

  521. into thinking

  522. about that

  523. person but

  524. if you set

  525. aside that

  526. I'm praying

  527. for one

  528. family a day

  529. in our church

  530. or something

  531. like that

  532. you begin to

  533. think through

  534. each person

  535. in that

  536. family

  537. have you

  538. been praying

  539. for the

  540. kids in

  541. our church

  542. not just

  543. your kids

  544. but the

  545. other children

  546. there's so

  547. much that

  548. we can

  549. that we can

  550. easily miss

  551. or pass over

  552. and so having

  553. a list

  554. and working

  555. through it

  556. regularly

  557. I'll be

  558. honest

  559. there are days

  560. where I miss

  561. I'm sure we

  562. all do

  563. the day takes

  564. you by surprise

  565. especially when

  566. you have kids

  567. and you

  568. wake up

  569. with them

  570. right there

  571. but

  572. we need to

  573. make this

  574. a habit

  575. God wants

  576. to do amazing

  577. things in our

  578. church

  579. and that

  580. will come

  581. in answer

  582. to our

  583. prayers

  584. when we pray

  585. according to

  586. his will

  587. and so let's

  588. ask God

  589. to do

  590. what he has

  591. shown us

  592. here

  593. he wants

  594. to do

  595. in our

  596. church

  597. for his

  598. glory

  599. amen

  600. for

  601. let's

  602. to

  603. recognize

  604. him

  605. in

  606. and

  607. again

  608. he wants

  609. to

  610. you
