  1. You can open them up to 1 Corinthians chapter 15.

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  2. And I don't know if, David, you're able to bring up my first slide there.

  3. How'd you like to take a ride in one of those?

  4. Too small.

  5. I think that's that secret desire to actually do it talking,

  6. but knowing that we probably won't get the chance,

  7. or we'll just never be able to afford it.

  8. But ever since I was young, I've always thought,

  9. man, it'd be so cool to ride in a car like that.

  10. If I ever got the chance, I would take it,

  11. especially if it didn't cost me anything.

  12. There's something about a car like that,

  13. excellence in engineering and design.

  14. It even looks good.

  15. The performance capabilities are just off the charts

  16. compared to my Sienna minivan.

  17. Hit the next one, David.

  18. How about that?

  19. Some of you, maybe that's a little bit more appealing.

  20. The S790, the latest offering by John Deere

  21. with all of the latest features.

  22. Maybe some of you feel that appreciation

  23. for quality design and engineering

  24. as you think of having one of those guys.

  25. And even though it's green, it does look good, doesn't it?

  26. The next one there, David.

  27. How about something like that?

  28. Something that probably more of us can relate to.

  29. Apple computers, Apple phones.

  30. There's something about those that when we look at it,

  31. we recognize the design, the engineering,

  32. the quality that has been put into it.

  33. It looks good in that sleek silver finish.

  34. It has amazing visuals,

  35. and it's light as a feather.

  36. There's something that we are really drawn to

  37. and appreciate when it comes to excellence

  38. in design and engineering.

  39. You can put it to the black one.

  40. But this morning, we're going to be looking at

  41. what the Lord has told us through Paul

  42. is one of the most amazing

  43. masterpieces in design and engineering.

  44. We've been working our way through 1 Corinthians 15.

  45. We began with a reminder from Paul

  46. that we need to hold firmly to the good news

  47. and what that is, the message of Christ.

  48. Then we've heard that there are some who are preaching

  49. or saying that there's no resurrection.

  50. There's no life after death.

  51. And Paul takes time to lay out the implications

  52. of embracing that idea.

  53. He corrects the idea.

  54. He says,

  55. Christ has indeed been raised from the dead.

  56. He goes on to explain a bit of the bigger picture here

  57. of what's going on between God

  58. and his son and his world

  59. and how Jesus is going to return to reign.

  60. And when he does,

  61. those who belong to him will be raised from the dead.

  62. Last Sunday, we went on to hear a few more implications

  63. that Paul has for denying the resurrection.

  64. We heard him appeal to his own life

  65. and how he has put himself through

  66. all kinds of trials and suffering

  67. because he knows that the resurrection of Christ is true

  68. and how it wouldn't even make sense for him

  69. to be living like he's living

  70. if all of this was a lie,

  71. to be risking the one precious life that he has.

  72. He's lived consistently with the truth.

  73. And now we come to verse 35.

  74. Paul says this,

  75. But someone will ask,

  76. How are the dead raised?

  77. With what kind of body will they come?

  78. How foolish!

  79. What you sow does not come to life

  80. unless it dies.

  81. Paul begins with a couple questions.

  82. And at first read,

  83. we're kind of,

  84. they're probably questions

  85. that we would like the answer to.

  86. How were the dead raised?

  87. Yes, tell us that.

  88. With what kind of body will they come?

  89. Yes, we want to know more about that.

  90. But what's not as clear

  91. is the way that these questions are being asked.

  92. Are they sincere questions?

  93. Are they just kind of questions

  94. Paul imagines them asking

  95. after what he's been teaching

  96. about the resurrection?

  97. Or are they kind of cynical questions?

  98. Questions that kind of have

  99. a little tone of challenge in them.

  100. Paul's answer kind of,

  101. I think,

  102. gives us a bit of a clue.

  103. He says in verse 36,

  104. immediately after,

  105. How foolish!

  106. Literally, fool!

  107. It seemed odd to respond like that

  108. if they were just genuine,

  109. sincere questions.

  110. And so I think

  111. these questions

  112. are the kind of questions

  113. that some have been asking

  114. as a subtle challenge

  115. to the idea of resurrection.

  116. How are the dead raised?

  117. How's it even possible?

  118. With what kind of body

  119. will they come?

  120. Will their remains

  121. somehow come back together

  122. and be reanimated

  123. and their soul go back

  124. into their corpse

  125. and they come back to life?

  126. That doesn't even make sense.

  127. You don't have the answer

  128. to that question?

  129. Oh, it's probably because

  130. it's a bunch of baloney.

  131. It's foolishness.

  132. But Paul immediately

  133. turns the table

  134. on those who would be

  135. offering this kind of challenge.

  136. He says,

  137. Fool!

  138. No!

  139. You guys are the ones

  140. who are mistaken,

  141. who are foolish

  142. in denying resurrection

  143. and the possibility

  144. of resurrection.

  145. And he goes on

  146. to give the analogy

  147. of a seed

  148. as he explains

  149. why denying the resurrection

  150. is foolishness.

  151. He says,

  152. What you sow

  153. does not come to life

  154. unless it dies.

  155. Verse 37,

  156. When you sow,

  157. you do not plant the body

  158. that will be,

  159. but just a seed,

  160. perhaps of wheat

  161. or of something else.

  162. But God gives it a body

  163. as he has determined.

  164. And to each kind of seed

  165. he gives its own body.

  166. I don't know if you can see that.

  167. This is a seed.

  168. And for those of us

  169. who have lived here

  170. on earth for a while,

  171. we know what this does.

  172. But how often do we stop to think,

  173. isn't it amazing

  174. that this tiny little,

  175. almost like a speck,

  176. when we plant it

  177. in the ground

  178. will turn into

  179. a full-fledged,

  180. healthy,

  181. vibrant,

  182. growing,

  183. green tomato plant

  184. that produces tomatoes

  185. delicious and juicy

  186. that are like this big.

  187. All of that

  188. is right there

  189. in here.

  190. Isn't that amazing?

  191. What's the lesson here

  192. that Paul is giving?

  193. The lesson is this.

  194. He says,

  195. what you sow

  196. into the ground,

  197. when you sow,

  198. you do not plant

  199. the body

  200. that will be

  201. but just a seed.

  202. What goes into the ground

  203. is not the same

  204. as what comes up

  205. out of the ground.

  206. Verse 42.

  207. We're going to connect

  208. back to this verse

  209. again and again

  210. because Paul's going to use

  211. a whole bunch of analogies here.

  212. So is it

  213. with the resurrection

  214. of the dead.

  215. The body

  216. that we have now,

  217. the body that is buried,

  218. the body that turns

  219. into a pile of dead bones

  220. after it's been buried

  221. for a while

  222. is not the body

  223. that comes out

  224. of the ground.

  225. Just the same

  226. as this little seed

  227. is not what comes

  228. back out of the ground.

  229. Something

  230. totally different,

  231. new,

  232. and better

  233. is what comes up

  234. out of the ground.

  235. Verse 38.

  236. But God gives it

  237. a body

  238. as he has determined

  239. and to each kind

  240. of seed

  241. he gives

  242. its own body.

  243. body.

  244. So what kind

  245. of body

  246. will we have

  247. at the resurrection?

  248. Well,

  249. just as God

  250. has designed

  251. each different

  252. kind of seed

  253. to turn

  254. into its own

  255. unique

  256. kind of plant,

  257. in the same way

  258. at the resurrection

  259. he will give us

  260. the body

  261. that he has

  262. determined

  263. according to his design,

  264. according to his plan.

  265. and notice

  266. the word

  267. gives.

  268. But God

  269. gives it

  270. a body

  271. and to each

  272. kind of seed

  273. he gives

  274. its own body.

  275. The body

  276. that we will have

  277. when we are raised

  278. from the dead

  279. comes from God.

  280. It's something

  281. that he gives

  282. as he

  283. has determined

  284. to those

  285. who belong

  286. to Christ.

  287. And I think

  288. there's a bit

  289. of a subtle

  290. point

  291. that we're meant

  292. to take

  293. from this.

  294. I mean,

  295. the question

  296. how is it

  297. possible

  298. for the dead

  299. to be raised?

  300. What kind

  301. of body

  302. will they

  303. come with?

  304. I think

  305. that what's

  306. implied

  307. in this

  308. analogy

  309. just like

  310. we have

  311. really

  312. when it

  313. comes down

  314. to it

  315. no idea

  316. how this

  317. tiny little

  318. thing

  319. can turn

  320. into a

  321. full-fledged

  322. plant.

  323. It's a miracle.

  324. So too

  325. is the

  326. resurrection.

  327. It's not

  328. something

  329. that we're

  330. meant to

  331. theorize

  332. about

  333. and try

  334. to figure

  335. out

  336. how will

  337. God

  338. gather

  339. up

  340. the

  341. remnants

  342. of

  343. our

  344. dead

  345. bodies?

  346. What if

  347. some of

  348. the parts

  349. of our

  350. body

  351. were

  352. eaten

  353. up

  354. by a

  355. fish

  356. or

  357. something?

  358. How is

  359. he going

  360. to do

  361. that?

  362. How is

  363. he going

  364. to

  365. reanimate

  366. and put

  367. our

  368. soul

  369. back

  370. into

  371. a

  372. corpse?

  373. That

  374. question

  375. is

  376. foolishness

  377. says

  378. Paul.

  379. Just

  380. the

  381. body

  382. that

  383. we're

  384. going

  385. to

  386. go

  387. into

  388. the

  389. ground

  390. with

  391. when

  392. we

  393. die

  394. and

  395. are

  396. buried

  397. is

  398. not

  399. the

  400. body

  401. that

  402. we

  403. will

  404. be

  405. raised

  406. with.

  407. God's

  408. going

  409. to do

  410. something

  411. miraculous

  412. and it's

  413. not a

  414. natural

  415. process.

  416. It's

  417. not

  418. something

  419. that you

  420. can

  421. explain

  422. with

  423. science.

  424. It's

  425. a

  426. miracle.

  427. It's

  428. something

  429. that he's

  430. going

  431. to do

  432. by his

  433. own

  434. life

  435. giving

  436. power.

  437. His

  438. own

  439. amazing

  440. ability

  441. to

  442. engineer

  443. and

  444. design

  445. and

  446. give

  447. life

  448. as he

  449. raises

  450. our

  451. bodies

  452. back to

  453. life

  454. from the

  455. dead.

  456. And

  457. what's

  458. even more

  459. amazing

  460. about this,

  461. I mean,

  462. you think

  463. about that

  464. little

  465. seed.

  466. Here's

  467. kind of a

  468. skill

  469. testing

  470. question.

  471. We'll

  472. see if

  473. our

  474. agronomist

  475. is up

  476. on his

  477. game.

  478. Is that

  479. little

  480. seed

  481. alive

  482. or

  483. dead?

  484. Kind

  485. of a

  486. trick

  487. question.

  488. I

  489. asked that

  490. to my

  491. wife.

  492. I

  493. don't

  494. know.

  495. Is it

  496. alive?

  497. Is it

  498. dead?

  499. You can

  500. Google

  501. this

  502. online

  503. later.

  504. But

  505. kind of

  506. the

  507. consensus

  508. out there

  509. is that

  510. that

  511. seed

  512. is

  513. alive.

  514. It's

  515. dormant,

  516. but it's

  517. alive.

  518. And you

  519. can actually

  520. kill it

  521. so that

  522. it doesn't

  523. sprout.

  524. these are

  525. not coming

  526. from people

  527. of faith

  528. or anything.

  529. This is

  530. science.

  531. They're

  532. saying,

  533. yeah,

  534. it's

  535. alive.

  536. We don't

  537. but it's

  538. amazing how

  539. quickly you'll

  540. come to

  541. find out

  542. that they'll

  543. admit we

  544. have no

  545. idea how

  546. it stays

  547. alive for

  548. years and

  549. years and

  550. years.

  551. There's

  552. some

  553. processes

  554. going on

  555. in there

  556. even if

  557. they're

  558. very slow

  559. and yet

  560. there's

  561. no input.

  562. The metabolism

  563. is not

  564. active and

  565. going in

  566. the same

  567. sense as

  568. when it's

  569. germinating.

  570. It's

  571. amazing.

  572. Very easily

  573. I was able

  574. to find all

  575. kinds of

  576. people saying

  577. this is an

  578. amazing process

  579. and it's

  580. not one

  581. that's well

  582. understood.

  583. That's a

  584. seed.

  585. That's a

  586. living thing

  587. like that

  588. turning into

  589. a living

  590. thing,

  591. a plant.

  592. Or you

  593. think about

  594. the miracle

  595. of life

  596. and how

  597. each one

  598. of you

  599. in this

  600. room

  601. began

  602. as a

  603. single

  604. cell,

  605. a single

  606. human

  607. cell.

  608. And even

  609. in that

  610. case,

  611. you came

  612. from

  613. living

  614. things,

  615. you came

  616. from a

  617. living sperm

  618. and a

  619. living egg,

  620. but the

  621. resurrection

  622. is something

  623. else.

  624. Those are

  625. natural in

  626. the sense

  627. that they do

  628. naturally

  629. occur.

  630. and we

  631. should admit

  632. that yes,

  633. they are

  634. miraculous.

  635. We can

  636. try to

  637. observe it,

  638. but do we

  639. understand how

  640. it works?

  641. Can we

  642. reproduce that?

  643. No way.

  644. But the

  645. resurrection

  646. is not

  647. living things

  648. turning into

  649. living things,

  650. but something

  651. that's dead

  652. turning into

  653. something that's

  654. alive again.

  655. Now that

  656. is amazing.

  657. When your

  658. body dies,

  659. dies,

  660. it's because

  661. the organs

  662. that sustain

  663. your life

  664. have stopped.

  665. They've

  666. failed.

  667. They've

  668. ceased.

  669. All of the

  670. processes,

  671. all of the

  672. biological

  673. functions that

  674. sustain your

  675. life have

  676. permanently

  677. ceased.

  678. That's what

  679. death is.

  680. The living

  681. organism that

  682. is your

  683. body,

  684. from that

  685. point on,

  686. it just

  687. decomposes.

  688. And up to

  689. a month

  690. later,

  691. I read

  692. one source

  693. that said

  694. the term

  695. they used

  696. was it

  697. begins to

  698. liquefy.

  699. And depending

  700. on how you're

  701. buried,

  702. eventually,

  703. all that's

  704. left is a

  705. bunch of

  706. dead bones

  707. in the

  708. ground.

  709. ground.

  710. And yet,

  711. God is

  712. able,

  713. if he is

  714. able to

  715. do what

  716. he can

  717. do with

  718. this,

  719. this,

  720. and turn

  721. it into

  722. a plant,

  723. with a

  724. single cell,

  725. and turn

  726. it into

  727. you,

  728. absolutely,

  729. he can do

  730. the most

  731. amazing of

  732. all,

  733. and give

  734. life to

  735. the dead.

  736. It's a

  737. miracle of

  738. God.

  739. We don't

  740. need to be

  741. able to

  742. explain the

  743. resurrection in

  744. scientific terms

  745. or in

  746. terms of how

  747. the parts of

  748. the body will

  749. come back

  750. together.

  751. It's something

  752. that God

  753. does by

  754. his amazing

  755. power.

  756. Paul goes

  757. on to

  758. give a few

  759. more analogies.

  760. Verse 39,

  761. he says,

  762. not all

  763. flesh is

  764. the same.

  765. People

  766. have one

  767. kind of

  768. flesh,

  769. animals have

  770. another,

  771. birds another,

  772. and fish

  773. another.

  774. There are

  775. also heavenly

  776. bodies,

  777. and there are

  778. earthly bodies.

  779. But the

  780. splendor of the

  781. heavenly bodies

  782. is one kind,

  783. and the

  784. splendor of the

  785. earthly bodies

  786. is another.

  787. The sun

  788. has one

  789. kind of

  790. splendor,

  791. the moon

  792. another,

  793. and the

  794. stars another.

  795. And star

  796. differs from

  797. star in

  798. splendor.

  799. Now,

  800. there's at

  801. least three

  802. or four

  803. different

  804. analogies all

  805. packed into

  806. there,

  807. so we're

  808. going to

  809. start with

  810. the first

  811. one.

  812. He says,

  813. not all

  814. flesh is

  815. the same.

  816. And then

  817. he walks

  818. backwards

  819. through the

  820. days of

  821. creation.

  822. creation.

  823. There's

  824. different kinds

  825. of bodies

  826. that God

  827. has given

  828. in the

  829. various

  830. creatures that

  831. he has

  832. created.

  833. There's

  834. you and

  835. I,

  836. and the

  837. kind of

  838. body we

  839. have.

  840. We've

  841. got two

  842. legs,

  843. we've

  844. got two

  845. arms,

  846. we're

  847. built to

  848. walk,

  849. we're

  850. built to

  851. work.

  852. Then there's

  853. the animals.

  854. Some of

  855. them are

  856. built

  857. differently,

  858. they have

  859. a different

  860. kind of

  861. body.

  862. Some of

  863. them have

  864. a tail

  865. so that

  866. they can

  867. balance in

  868. trees,

  869. or on

  870. steep

  871. cliffs.

  872. Or they

  873. have

  874. four legs

  875. so that

  876. they can

  877. run really

  878. fast.

  879. Or they

  880. have fur

  881. so that

  882. they can

  883. endure

  884. the

  885. coldest

  886. of

  887. climates

  888. and

  889. temperatures.

  890. Then there's

  891. birds.

  892. They're a

  893. whole other

  894. kind of

  895. animal.

  896. They've

  897. got wings

  898. so that

  899. they can

  900. fly through

  901. the air.

  902. They've

  903. got beaks

  904. so that

  905. they can

  906. break

  907. open

  908. seeds.

  909. Then you've

  910. got fish,

  911. totally

  912. different.

  913. They've

  914. got fins

  915. and a

  916. tail and

  917. they're

  918. sleek so

  919. that they

  920. can move

  921. quickly through

  922. the water.

  923. They've

  924. got gills,

  925. something

  926. totally

  927. different than

  928. we have.

  929. What's

  930. Paul's

  931. lesson in

  932. this?

  933. Because as

  934. we said

  935. earlier,

  936. he comes

  937. down again

  938. to verse

  939. 42,

  940. so it

  941. is with

  942. the

  943. resurrection

  944. of the

  945. dead.

  946. God has

  947. uniquely

  948. tailored

  949. each

  950. different

  951. kind

  952. of

  953. creature

  954. that

  955. he

  956. has

  957. made

  958. for

  959. the

  960. environment

  961. that

  962. he

  963. intended

  964. for it

  965. to live

  966. in.

  967. In the

  968. same way,

  969. when we

  970. are raised

  971. from the

  972. dead,

  973. he will

  974. give us

  975. the body

  976. that we

  977. need

  978. for the

  979. life

  980. that he

  981. has for

  982. us

  983. in the

  984. forever

  985. kingdom

  986. that Jesus

  987. is coming

  988. to bring

  989. we

  990. will

  991. be

  992. perfectly

  993. suited

  994. to

  995. eternal

  996. life.

  997. The

  998. body

  999. we

  1000. have

  1001. will

  1002. be

  1003. engineered

  1004. perfectly

  1005. for that.

  1006. Paul

  1007. goes on,

  1008. he says

  1009. that there's

  1010. heavenly

  1011. bodies

  1012. and earthly

  1013. bodies.

  1014. He goes

  1015. on to

  1016. talk about

  1017. how there's

  1018. different

  1019. levels of

  1020. splendor

  1021. or glory

  1022. between

  1023. stars and

  1024. various

  1025. things in

  1026. the heavens.

  1027. You almost

  1028. get the

  1029. sense that

  1030. Paul is

  1031. just reflecting

  1032. on what

  1033. he has

  1034. seen of

  1035. what God

  1036. has done

  1037. in the

  1038. universe.

  1039. God's

  1040. created all

  1041. kinds of

  1042. stuff.

  1043. What a

  1044. variety we

  1045. see on

  1046. earth,

  1047. but that's

  1048. not it.

  1049. I mean,

  1050. God has

  1051. done an

  1052. incredible

  1053. variety of

  1054. stuff in

  1055. the heavens

  1056. beyond the

  1057. earth.

  1058. And as

  1059. our technology

  1060. improves,

  1061. we're able to

  1062. see more and

  1063. more of that

  1064. beauty through

  1065. Hubble

  1066. telescopes and

  1067. satellites and

  1068. all kinds of

  1069. things like

  1070. that.

  1071. And we

  1072. haven't even

  1073. begun to

  1074. scratch the

  1075. surface of

  1076. this vast

  1077. universe that

  1078. we live in.

  1079. I'm going to

  1080. give a bit of

  1081. a teaser.

  1082. We're going to

  1083. go here more

  1084. next week because

  1085. Paul gets to

  1086. this a little

  1087. later, but the

  1088. point that he

  1089. is, I think,

  1090. making here is

  1091. that we are

  1092. earthly, but

  1093. there will come

  1094. a day in the

  1095. resurrection where

  1096. we will bear the

  1097. image of the

  1098. heavenly man.

  1099. This

  1100. resurrection thing,

  1101. it's not just the

  1102. body that we went

  1103. into the ground

  1104. with coming back

  1105. up again.

  1106. No.

  1107. It's like the

  1108. seed.

  1109. I mean, there's

  1110. nothing spectacular

  1111. looking at that

  1112. little seed.

  1113. It just looks like

  1114. a little speck.

  1115. But compared to

  1116. that speck, the

  1117. tomato plant, when

  1118. it's fully bloomed

  1119. and grown and the

  1120. tomatoes are on

  1121. it, no, that's

  1122. glorious.

  1123. That's beautiful.

1124. So it is with the

  1125. resurrection.

  1126. Our bodies will

  1127. go into the

  1128. ground, a thing

  1129. of the earth, but

  1130. they will be raised

  1131. to be glorious and

  1132. beautiful, a

  1133. marvelous work of

  1134. God.

  1135. God.

  1136. Verse 42.

1137. So it is with the

  1138. resurrection of the

  1139. dead.

  1140. We've already

  1141. talked about this.

  1142. Paul's kind of

  1143. relating this.

  1144. These are all

  1145. analogies that are

  1146. pointing to how we

  1147. will be raised from

  1148. the dead when

  1149. Christ returns.

  1150. But we want to

  1151. know more.

  1152. We want to know

  1153. the details.

  1154. Well, what's it

  1155. going to be like?

  1156. What's my new

  1157. body going to be

  1158. like?

  1159. Paul goes on.

  1160. He gives us a

  1161. few descriptive

  1162. words.

  1163. He says in verse

  1164. 42, the body that

  1165. is sown is

  1166. perishable.

  1167. It is raised

  1168. imperishable.

  1169. The word

  1170. perishable refers

  1171. to decay.

  1172. The bodies that

  1173. we have right

  1174. now, they're

  1175. subject to decay.

  1176. They wear down.

  1177. They run down.

  1178. They, after a

  1179. period of time,

  1180. they expire.

  1181. Our organs fail.

  1182. That's the kind

  1183. of body that will

  1184. be sown into the

  1185. ground when we

  1186. die.

  1187. But it will be

  1188. raised imperishable.

  1189. A body that will

  1190. never wear out.

  1191. A body that will

  1192. never expire.

  1193. A body that is

  1194. not subject to

  1195. decay.

  1196. Paul says it

  1197. is sown in

  1198. dishonor.

  1199. It is raised in

  1200. glory.

  1201. There's some

  1202. back and forth

  1203. over what it

  1204. means to be

  1205. sown in

  1206. dishonor.

  1207. Some people

  1208. see that as

  1209. kind of how

  1210. death in itself

  1211. is kind of a

  1212. humiliating thing.

  1213. You can think

  1214. back to Jewish,

  1215. the Jewish

  1216. religious laws

  1217. from the Old

  1218. Testament.

  1219. Even to touch

  1220. a dead body

  1221. would make you

  1222. unclean.

  1223. And that view

  1224. kind of sees

  1225. dishonor as

  1226. referring to the

  1227. ugliness and the

  1228. shamefulness of

  1229. death.

  1230. others have said,

  1231. well, no, perhaps

  1232. dishonor refers to

  1233. more to kind of

  1234. the consequence

  1235. that death is.

  1236. That they died is

  1237. evidence that they

  1238. were a sinner,

  1239. that they lived a

  1240. dishonorable life.

1241. And which it is of

  1242. the two, I'm not

  1243. sure.

  1244. But what we're

  1245. really looking at is

  1246. the contrast that

  1247. Paul gives.

  1248. It is sown in

  1249. dishonor.

  1250. It is raised in

  1251. glory.

  1252. And while it's

  1253. true that being

  1254. raised from the

  1255. dead is a

  1256. glorious thing,

  1257. to have the

  1258. terrible consequence

  1259. of death reversed

  1260. and undone, I

  1261. think what Paul is

  1262. really pointing to

  1263. is the body and

  1264. what the body will

  1265. be characterized

  1266. by.

  1267. It will be

  1268. imperishable and

  1269. it will be raised

  1270. in glory.

  1271. It will be a

  1272. glorious body.

  1273. Think back to

  1274. what Paul said in

  1275. his letter to the

  1276. Philippians.

  1277. He says that we

  1278. are awaiting a

  1279. savior, Jesus,

  1280. who by his power

  1281. will transform our

  1282. lowly bodies so

  1283. that they will be

  1284. like his glorious

  1285. body.

  1286. There's that same

  1287. idea.

  1288. Our bodies, when we

  1289. are raised from the

  1290. dead, are going to

  1291. be nothing like the

  1292. kind of body that

  1293. we had.

  1294. I'm not going to

  1295. talk about whether

  1296. we'll have two arms

  1297. and two legs today.

  1298. We can talk about

  1299. that next Sunday.

1300. But in terms of the

  1301. quality, the

  1302. permanence of our

  1303. bodies, the

  1304. splendor, the glory

  1305. of our bodies, it

  1306. will be the

  1307. difference between

  1308. this tomato seed and

  1309. the full-grown plant

  1310. with the fruit on

  1311. it.

  1312. Like Christ's

  1313. glorious body.

  1314. Paul says, it is

  1315. sown in weakness.

  1316. It is raised in

  1317. power.

  1318. Weakness.

  1319. That's what describes

  1320. the bodies that we

  1321. have right now.

  1322. They're frail.

  1323. They're fragile.

  1324. They break.

  1325. And we have a

  1326. limited ability to

  1327. heal ourselves.

  1328. But the bodies that

1329. we will have in the

  1330. resurrection, it will

  1331. be raised in power.

1332. And yes, I think that

  1333. that describes how

  1334. God will do it.

1335. He will do it with

  1336. his power.

1337. But I think Paul is

  1338. really describing what

1339. the body will be like.

  1340. It will be

  1341. imperishable.

  1342. It will be glorious.

1343. It will be a body

  1344. of power,

  1345. characterized by

  1346. power.

  1347. The life-giving

  1348. power of God

  1349. will be in it.

  1350. Perhaps we will

  1351. have capacities

  1352. or abilities that

  1353. we never had

  1354. before.

  1355. I'm not going to

  1356. go too much into

  1357. that kind of

  1358. speculation.

  1359. But for sure,

  1360. the capacities

  1361. that we will have,

  1362. the abilities that

  1363. we have, will be

  1364. perfected.

  1365. in that body.

  1366. We'll be strong.

  1367. We'll have energy.

  1368. Lastly, Paul says,

1369. it is sown a natural

  1370. body.

  1371. It is raised a

  1372. spiritual body.

  1373. And we're actually

1374. going to focus in on

  1375. that next Sunday.

  1376. It's one of those

  1377. verses that I think

  1378. we have often

  1379. misinterpreted.

1380. And Paul has quite a

1381. lot to say about it

  1382. in the next whole

  1383. paragraph.

  1384. So we're going to

  1385. save that for

  1386. next Sunday.

  1387. What is Paul's

  1388. point in all this?

  1389. Paul's point is

  1390. that it's foolish

  1391. to think that

  1392. the resurrection

  1393. is impossible

  1394. because we can't

  1395. imagine how it

  1396. works.

  1397. We can't even

  1398. imagine how that

  1399. little seed turns

  1400. into a tomato

  1401. plant.

  1402. God will do it.

  1403. He can do it

  1404. by his amazing

  1405. power, by his

  1406. design and

  1407. engineering

  1408. ability that is

  1409. completely unrivaled

  1410. and like nothing

  1411. else that we have

  1412. ever seen.

  1413. If we think that

  1414. the Ferrari is

  1415. impressive, we

  1416. ain't seen nothing

  1417. yet.

  1418. If you think that

  1419. that S790 is

  1420. awesome, a work of

  1421. true ingenuity,

  1422. you ain't seen

  1423. nothing yet.

  1424. If you think

  1425. that the best

  1426. of art and

  1427. music and film

  1428. that people are

  1429. able to create

  1430. is something

  1431. today, you

  1432. ain't seen

  1433. nothing yet.

  1434. And the

  1435. evidence of

  1436. that, Paul

  1437. says, is in

  1438. the world that

  1439. we live in.

  1440. Look around.

  1441. Open your

  1442. eyes.

  1443. Look at the

  1444. world that he's

  1445. created.

  1446. All of it

  1447. points to his

  1448. ability to do

  1449. this, to give

  1450. life from the

  1451. dead.

  1452. And he will.

  1453. He will for

  1454. those who

  1455. belong to

  1456. Jesus.

  1457. For those who

  1458. belong to

  1459. Jesus.

  1460. It's not

  1461. something that

  1462. will be given

  1463. to everybody.

  1464. The resurrection

  1465. to this life

  1466. and this new

  1467. body, this is a

  1468. gift that God

  1469. will give as he

  1470. determines to

  1471. those who belong

  1472. to Jesus.

  1473. Do you

  1474. belong to

  1475. Jesus?

  1476. If you have

  1477. any doubts in

  1478. your heart or

  1479. if that's

  1480. something that

  1481. you want to

  1482. know more

  1483. about and

  1484. you're not

  1485. sure, come

  1486. talk to me

  1487. after the

  1488. service.

  1489. I'd love to

  1490. have that

  1491. conversation

  1492. with you.

  1493. The last

  1494. thing that I

  1495. want us to

  1496. reflect on for

  1497. a moment.

  1498. I mean, this

  1499. is Paul writing

  1500. to the

  1501. Corinthian

  1502. church.

  1503. You might

  1504. think, well,

  1505. that's so long

  1506. ago, that's so

  1507. out there.

  1508. What does this

  1509. have to do with

  1510. my life today?

  1511. And what I

  1512. want to press

  1513. home is simply

  1514. this.

  1515. Isn't it

  1516. amazing that

  1517. for those of

  1518. us who belong

  1519. to Jesus, God

  1520. is going to

  1521. give us this

  1522. amazing gift of

  1523. a new, glorious,

  1524. imperishable,

  1525. powerful body to

  1526. live in, that

  1527. will be us for

  1528. eternity.

  1529. What do we do

  1530. to deserve

  1531. that?

  1532. Nothing.

  1533. In fact, we've

  1534. done all kinds

  1535. of things not

  1536. to deserve it,

  1537. and yet this

  1538. too is part of

  1539. the good news

  1540. that Jesus has

  1541. done this and

  1542. he gives this

  1543. to us as a

  1544. free gift of

  1545. his love and

  1546. his grace.

  1547. The one thing

  1548. that totally

  1549. beats us all,

  1550. death.

  1551. He is going

  1552. to flip on

  1553. its head and

  1554. give us life

  1555. and a new

  1556. body.

  1557. won't it be

  1558. something to

  1559. have a body

  1560. that doesn't

  1561. have problems

  1562. with sickness?

  1563. Won't it be

  1564. something to

  1565. have a body

  1566. that doesn't

  1567. have any

  1568. issues of

  1569. disability?

  1570. Won't it be

  1571. something to

  1572. have a body

  1573. that doesn't

  1574. have any

  1575. problems with

  1576. hormonal

  1577. imbalances and

  1578. not feeling the

  1579. way that I

  1580. should about

  1581. different things?

  1582. a body that

  1583. doesn't have

  1584. problems with

  1585. achy joints

  1586. and pain

  1587. with parts of

  1588. it that just

  1589. wear out and

  1590. don't work

  1591. right anymore?

  1592. This is the

  1593. gift of God

  1594. for his people,

  1595. for all of

  1596. those who

  1597. belong to

  1598. Christ.

  1599. Isn't that

  1600. amazing?

  1601. God,

  1602. let's pray.

  1603. Father in

  1604. heaven,

  1605. thank you that

  1606. we have this

  1607. to look forward

  1608. to.

  1609. Lord,

  1610. some of us

  1611. don't feel it.

  1612. We're young.

  1613. We bounce

  1614. back pretty

  1615. quickly when we

  1616. get sick.

  1617. But we pray

  1618. and ask that

  1619. you would

  1620. increase our

  1621. faith,

  1622. that we would

  1623. not be like

  1624. the skeptics

  1625. who doubt

  1626. your abilities

  1627. and your

  1628. power.

  1629. increase our

  1630. faith and

  1631. fill our

  1632. hearts with

  1633. joy as

  1634. we trust

  1635. in the

  1636. good gift,

  1637. the good

  1638. future that

  1639. you have

  1640. prepared for

  1641. us.

  1642. We ask

  1643. this in

  1644. Christ's

  1645. name.

  1646. Amen.
