  1. Well, how many of you like growing things?

  2. Few.

  3. That's good.

  4. It's good to see those whose livelihood depends on it.

  5. Put their hands up there.

  6. How many of you like baking things?

  7. Yes.

  8. Right on, Landon.

  9. I see that hand.

  10. How many of you have never watered a plant or baked anything in your life?

  11. Okay.

  12. Pretty much all of us have.

  13. Maybe it's not all of our favorite things to do, but certainly we enjoy, I think all

  14. of us, the things that come from baking and gardening, whether it's flowers or a tasty

  15. loaf of bread.

  16. Well, this morning we're going to be hearing from Jesus on the subject of gardening and

  17. baking.

  18. And some of you, when you hear that, might be wondering, did I come to the right church this

  19. morning?

  20. Don't worry.

  21. This sermon is not titled, Five Pro Tips to Get Better Yields in Your Garden.

  22. Jesus had a way of taking the ordinary and everyday stuff of life and using it to teach

  23. important truth from God.

  24. We've been doing a series on the kingdom of heaven and some of the parables that Jesus taught

  25. on the kingdom of heaven.

  26. And this morning, baking and gardening are simply the ordinary things that Jesus has chosen

  27. to communicate that truth.

  28. And so if you have your Bibles, please open them up to Matthew chapter 13, verse 31.

    Matthew 13:31

  29. Matthew chapter 13, verse 31.

    Matthew 13:31

  30. Jesus told them another parable.

  31. The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field.

  32. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants

  33. and becomes a tree so that the birds come and nest in its branches.

  34. He told them still another parable.

  35. The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about 60 pounds of flour

  36. until it worked all through the dough.

  37. Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables.

  38. He did not say anything to them without using a parable.

  39. So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet.

  40. I will open my mouth in parables.

  41. I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.

  42. So these are the parables that we're looking at this morning.

  43. And even as we've read through them, you'll notice that they're quite different from the

  44. ones we've looked at so far.

  45. These are very short and sweet.

  46. They go right to the point.

  47. They're kind of mini parables.

  48. And we also notice that there's no explanation given.

  49. The last two that we've looked at, Jesus actually explains in detail what they mean to his disciples.

  50. But here, whether he did or not, we don't know.

  51. We're kind of, we're on our own here.

  52. So we're going to have to look carefully at the details of each of these.

  53. Because the big question is, well, how is the kingdom of God like that?

  54. Like a mustard seed?

  55. Like yeast?

  56. So let's start with the parable of the mustard seed.

  57. The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field.

  58. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants

  59. and becomes a tree so that the birds come and perch in its branches.

  60. So the first thing we notice is that Jesus is talking about a mustard seed.

  61. Now, there's been all kinds of research and scholarly conjecture as to what species of mustard plant this was.

  62. You know, of the seeds we know about today, there's consensus that it probably isn't the mustard plant that gets sown into farmers' fields here in North America today.

  63. That much we're pretty sure about.

  64. But of the other choices, which one is it?

  65. You know, there's conjecture about the seed.

  66. I mean, is it really the smallest of all seeds?

  67. What exactly does that seed look like?

  68. There's some good options.

  69. There's the black mustard seed plant that apparently grows in the Middle East, and it gets to be about 8 to 12 feet high, a small tree.

  70. Is that what Jesus was talking about?

  71. There's another one called Salvadora Persica.

  72. I'm sure that's its technical name.

  73. But it apparently grows to be quite large, 20 to 25 feet, and it has these pungent berries that have a mustard flavor on it.

  74. Is that the mustard seed tree that Jesus was talking about?

  75. At the end of the day, we kind of have to admit this is 2,000 years after the fact, and we don't know exactly which seed and tree Jesus was referring to.

  76. But the point here is not so much to look at the accuracy of the Bible or the archaeology of the Bible.

  77. I mean, we could come to this to critique Jesus' use of metaphor.

  78. I mean, is there really such kind of seed or tree?

  79. Or are we here to hear from Jesus the point that he is trying to make about the kingdom of heaven?

  80. I mean, Jesus was using common, everyday things to teach, and it's doubtful that he would have chosen something that a guy would be like,

  81. well, a mustard seed doesn't grow into a tree.

  82. So let's give Jesus the benefit of the doubt and assume that there was some species of tree grown in the Middle East,

  83. typically in people's gardens or fields or near or around them,

  84. that had a very small seed, smaller than all the other garden variety plants,

  85. and yet it grew to be larger than all the other typical Middle Eastern garden plants,

  86. large enough that birds could come and nest in it.

  87. And so what are the details that Jesus highlights for us in this little parable?

  88. The first thing that we notice is the size of the seed.

  89. He says, though it is the smallest of seeds, the size of the seed compared to other seeds.

  90. So in your mind, most of you probably like to eat fruits and vegetables, I hope.

  91. Think about your seeds.

  92. You've got your pumpkin seed.

  93. It's pretty large.

  94. You've got your watermelon seed, your apple seed, kind of about the same size, little black things.

  95. Then you've got your cherry tomato seed.

  96. Now we're starting to get small.

  97. And then you've got your mustard seed, the tiniest of all seeds.

  98. And now there's some conjecture here.

  99. Is he talking about all seeds everywhere in the world?

  100. Probably not.

  101. The orchid seed, people have been quick to say, oh, that's smaller, so Jesus is wrong.

  102. But when he talks about plants, the word he uses is the word that typically describes garden or herb kind of plants.

  103. Okay, so this is probably referring to the smallest of seeds that would go into the garden.

  104. So you've got your mustard seed, this tiny seed.

  105. Think of a peppercorn, but even that shrunk down into just a little black speck.

  106. The smallest of all seeds.

  107. The next thing he emphasizes is what that seed grows into.

  108. It grows into the largest of all garden plants.

  109. You can imagine a garden.

  110. Maybe they planted it at the edge of the garden and kind of a tree, a large plant.

  111. Everything else is smaller.

  112. It's the largest.

  113. In size.

  114. Even though it started as the smallest, it became the largest.

  115. And, of course, Jesus is not just comparing seeds and plants.

  116. The point he's trying to make is look at how it started and how it ends.

  117. It started as the smallest.

  118. And it grew and became the largest.

  119. And that's the first truth that we really see coming through here about the kingdom of God.

  120. It's a kingdom that has surprisingly humble beginnings.

  121. But it grows to be the greatest and largest kingdom of all.

  122. It's a kingdom that has surprisingly humble beginnings.

  123. Think of Abram.

  124. A nobody to the world.

  125. A guy from Ur of the Chaldeans.

  126. A shepherd.

  127. A nomad.

  128. A guy who lived in tents and rented.

  129. Who was he to the world?

  130. By the end of his life,

  131. he'd finally earned the respect of the people in the land in which he lived

  132. enough that they let him buy a place to bury his wife.

  133. He owned nothing except his flocks and his household.

  134. The kingdom of heaven has surprisingly humble beginnings.

  135. Think of a baby in a feeding box.

  136. The son of, as far as it would seem to the world, a carpenter.

  137. Born in Bethlehem.

  138. A nothing town in a backwater region of the Roman Empire.

  139. He grew up in Nazareth.

  140. Can anything good come from Nazareth?

  141. It's a kingdom with surprisingly humble beginnings.

  142. Yeah, there's a guy named Jesus out there at the lake with a bunch of fishermen and a tax collector and some others.

  143. Pretty pathetic movement, if you ask me.

  144. I mean, three years after it started, their leader was executed.

  145. Executed.

  146. And it all came to nothing.

  147. To some.

  148. It was a kingdom of surprisingly humble beginnings.

  149. And yet, the point that Jesus is making.

  150. There's an element of surprise here.

  151. Because even though that's how it started, it ends as the greatest and largest and most glorious kingdom of all.

  152. This is not the first time that the kingdom of God, the kingdom of heaven, has been compared to kingdoms.

  153. If you remember back to the days of Daniel.

  154. Daniel was in exile.

  155. He was one of the king's wise men and advisors in the Babylonian Empire in the days of King Nebuchadnezzar.

  156. And God gave Nebuchadnezzar two visions to remind him that even though his kingdom was great and glorious,

  157. it was not the greatest that this world would yet see.

  158. The first was of a statue.

  159. Nebuchadnezzar had a vision or a dream from God of a great statue.

  160. And various parts of the statue, Daniel interprets this vision, represent various kingdoms that would follow.

  161. And none of them compare to the splendor of the first, which is the head of gold.

  162. Nebuchadnezzar's Babylonian Empire.

  163. A great and glorious kingdom.

  164. And then the vision takes a turn.

  165. And a rock comes and smashes the whole statue to pieces.

  166. And the rock grows and becomes a mountain that fills the whole earth.

  167. Daniel interprets the vision for King Nebuchadnezzar.

  168. He says that the rock represents how the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed.

  169. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will in self endure forever.

  170. A kingdom that will be far greater and fill the whole earth.

  171. God gave a second vision to Nebuchadnezzar.

  172. I guess he needed the reminder.

  173. He didn't get the point of the first vision.

  174. He was thinking to himself,

  175. Oh, I'm so great.

  176. Look at what I have done in my kingdom.

  177. It's the greatest kingdom this world has ever known.

  178. So God gave him another vision.

  179. And interestingly, this time in his vision, he sees a large tree.

  180. I looked and there before me stood a tree in the middle of the land.

  181. Its height was enormous.

  182. The tree grew large and strong and its top touched the sky.

  183. It was visible to the ends of the earth.

  184. Its leaves were beautiful.

  185. Its fruit abundant.

  186. And on it was food for all.

  187. Under it, the wild animals found shelter.

  188. And the birds lived in its branches.

  189. From it, every creature was fed.

  190. And Daniel interprets the vision for him.

  191. This vision also takes a turn for the worst.

  192. An angel of the Lord comes down in the vision and calls for the tree to be cut down.

  193. Daniel says that the tree represents you, King Nebuchadnezzar,

  194. and your kingdom, your dominion, which is spread out on the earth.

  195. And until Nebuchadnezzar was willing to acknowledge that God was the true King of Heaven

  196. and that He rules, He would be humbled for a time.

  197. And eventually, Nebuchadnezzar did just that.

  198. I, Nebuchadnezzar, at the end of that time, raised my eyes toward Heaven

  199. and I praised the Most High.

  200. I honored and glorified Him who lives forever.

  201. His dominion is an eternal dominion.

  202. His kingdom endures from generation to generation.

  203. The kingdom of God, the kingdom of Heaven, is the greatest.

  204. And when it comes in its fullness,

  205. will very obviously be the greatest, the tallest,

  206. the most glorious kingdom that this world has ever seen or known.

  207. But it doesn't start that way.

  208. It's a kingdom that grows, just like a tree grows,

  209. from the smallest and most humblest of beginnings.

  210. One of the things that Jesus said in His teaching,

  211. He said,

  212. I say to you, many will come from the east and the west

  213. and will take their places at the feast

  214. with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of Heaven.

  215. The kingdom of Heaven has been a long time in the making,

  216. all the way back to the days of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.

  217. It's not something that just,

  218. and it's here,

  219. like a flash of lightning.

  220. It's something that grows

  221. over a period of time.

  222. The last detail that Jesus mentions about this mustard plant

  223. is that it becomes a tree

  224. and the birds come and nest in its branches.

  225. What does that mean?

  226. It's kind of a weird thing.

  227. What does it mean the birds come and nest in its branches?

  228. I think the most helpful place to go

  229. to get Jesus' meaning

  230. is right back to that vision

  231. that we were just talking about of Nebuchadnezzar.

  232. Some striking parallels there.

  233. The tree that Nebuchadnezzar saw,

  234. under it the wild animals found shelter,

  235. and the birds lived in its branches.

  236. From it every creature was fed.

  237. This is a positive thing.

  238. This is a good thing.

  239. Nebuchadnezzar's kingdom,

  240. his dominion was one in which

  241. people,

  242. people groups,

  243. found a home to live in,

  244. a place to take refuge.

  245. And that was a good thing.

  246. It's a very positive image.

  247. And if the tree represents the kingdom,

  248. then the birds in the tree represent the citizens

  249. who come to live in the kingdom.

  250. I got to thinking about that this week.

  251. What is a bird?

  252. What is a tree to a bird?

  253. I mean, you could even back up a step.

  254. Where will you find birds?

  255. Here in town,

  256. I notice it right away

  257. when I'm going down Hamilton,

  258. kind of towards,

  259. what is it, railway?

  260. or the beginning of Washington,

  261. there's kind of those huge

  262. kind of canopy of trees

  263. over top of the streets there.

  264. Those streets,

  265. they're covered

  266. with little birds

  267. dancing around

  268. and flitting to and fro.

  269. Other streets

  270. that have

  271. almost no trees

  272. have none.

  273. What is

  274. a tree

  275. to a bird?

  276. One of the details

  277. that Mark mentions

  278. in his gospel

  279. when Jesus

  280. told this parable

  281. is that

  282. it grows into a tree

  283. and it has large branches

  284. that give shade

  285. under which the birds

  286. can nest.

  287. We can kind of

  288. go off of that

  289. a little bit.

  290. A tree

  291. is a place

  292. for a bird

  293. to find shelter

  294. from the elements,

  295. shade

  296. from the heat

  297. of the sun,

  298. a hollow

  299. to nest in,

  300. to be out of the storm,

  301. branches to

  302. hold fast to

  303. when the wind

  304. is blowing crazy

  305. and it's not safe

  306. to be flying out

  307. in that.

  308. It's a place

  309. high up,

  310. safe

  311. from the predators

  312. on the ground.

  313. It's a place

  314. of refuge,

  315. a place of shelter

  316. and protection.

  317. It's a many-perched

  318. thing,

  319. numerous perches

  320. and sometimes

  321. I just saw this

  322. the other night,

  323. a whole bunch

  324. of wax wings

  325. perched

  326. in my neighbor's

  327. tree

  328. together.

  329. In the winter

  330. in Edmonton

  331. we often saw

  332. them,

  333. just hundreds of them

  334. would descend

  335. on some of those

  336. trees that had

  337. little berries.

  338. It's a perfect place

  339. to find some fruit,

  340. some berries,

  341. some seeds

  342. to eat,

  343. to find some

  344. leaf-eating insects

  345. for a meal

  346. or to get some

  347. vantage point

  348. down on where

  349. they might find

  350. food on the ground

  351. or find materials

  352. to build a nest.

  353. it's a perfect place

  354. for a whole flock

  355. of birds

  356. to perch

  357. and sometimes

  358. I just wonder

  359. what are they

  360. doing there?

  361. They're hanging

  362. out.

  363. They're singing

  364. together.

  365. They're making

  366. music.

  367. It's the ideal

  368. place for a bird

  369. to carry on

  370. its life

  371. to find

  372. its need

  373. the place

  374. where it'll find

  375. its needs met

  376. a place

  377. to build a nest

  378. and a home.

  379. So too

  380. is the kingdom

  381. of God

  382. to the citizens

  383. of the kingdom

  384. of God.

  385. It's the ideal

  386. place

  387. to build a home

  388. to live in

  389. where all of our

  390. needs are met

  391. a place that's safe

  392. where we have

  393. no fear of

  394. danger or threat.

  395. Such will be

  396. the kingdom

  397. of God

  398. for the citizens

  399. of the kingdom

  400. especially when

  401. it comes

  402. in its fullness

  403. as Jesus

  404. is talking about

  405. with this parable

  406. of the tree.

  407. So to sum up

  408. this parable

  409. the mustard seed

  410. the kingdom

  411. of heaven

  412. will be

  413. the greatest

  414. and most

  415. glorious kingdom

  416. that this world

  417. has ever known

  418. a perfect place

  419. to live

  420. for its citizens

  421. but surprisingly

  422. a kingdom

  423. that came

  424. from the smallest

  425. and most humblest

  426. of beginnings.

  427. the next parable

  428. that Jesus

  429. tells

  430. changes things

  431. up a little bit.

  432. We go

  433. from outside

  434. into the kitchen

  435. baking

  436. and this time

  437. it's a woman

  438. rather than a man.

  439. The kingdom

  440. of heaven

  441. is like yeast

  442. that a woman

  443. took and mixed

  444. into about

  445. 60 pounds

  446. of flour

  447. until it worked

  448. all through

  449. the dough.

  450. Yeast

  451. is fascinating

  452. stuff

  453. and I didn't

  454. even realize

  455. just how

  456. fascinating

  457. it was

  458. until this week

  459. when I was

  460. trying to

  461. figure out

  462. what exactly

  463. it is.

  464. Most of us

  465. probably just

  466. know it

  467. as that stuff

  468. that you get

  469. in a jar

  470. from the store

  471. and then you

  472. put that

  473. into your baking

  474. and it rises

  475. and it is

  476. that

  477. but there's

  478. so much

  479. more going

  480. on with yeast.

  481. It has

  482. some surprising

  483. characteristics.

  484. You just

  485. put a little

  486. bit in

  487. and it

  488. can affect

  489. a lot

  490. of flour

  491. a lot

  492. of dough.

  493. Why is that?

  494. Why is it

  495. so potent?

  496. There's

  497. just something

  498. about it.

  499. The first

  500. thing I learned

  501. this week

  502. and I'll

  503. give the

  504. disclaimer now

  505. I am not

  506. a baker

  507. or a biochemist

  508. but yeast

  509. is actually

  510. alive.

  511. It's a

  512. single cell

  513. living organism

  514. and

  515. essentially

  516. what it does

  517. is it eats

  518. sugar

  519. and then

  520. produces

  521. carbon dioxide

  522. and those

  523. become little

  524. bubbles kind

  525. of entrapped

  526. in the dough

  527. and it's

  528. those bubbles

  529. that cause

  530. the dough

  531. to actually

  532. rise.

  533. Apparently

  534. in one

  535. teaspoon

  536. of active

  537. dry yeast

  538. there's

  539. an estimated

  540. amount of

  541. 40 billion

  542. yeast cells.

  543. cells.

  544. And so

  545. you can

  546. imagine

  547. when you're

  548. mixing

  549. even just

  550. that little

  551. bit

  552. all of

  553. those cells

  554. you can't

  555. see them

  556. but they're

  557. going all

  558. throughout

  559. the mixture

  560. so that

  561. once you

  562. have this

  563. lump of

  564. dough

  565. it rises

  566. you put it

  567. in the oven

  568. you bake

  569. it

  570. it comes

  571. out

  572. and you

  573. look at

  574. your bread

  575. and you

  576. wonder

  577. where did

  578. all those

  579. little holes

  580. come from?

  581. that's

  582. where they

  583. came from.

  584. So next

  585. time you

  586. have a

  587. freshly

  588. sliced

  589. piece

  590. of

  591. bread

  592. don't

  593. look at

  594. the

  595. bread

  596. but look

  597. between

  598. the

  599. bread

  600. look at

  601. the

  602. holes

  603. each

  604. one

  605. of

  606. those

  607. holes

  608. when you

  609. take

  610. them

  611. all

  612. together

  613. are

  614. evidence

  615. of

  616. just

  617. how

  618. thoroughly

  619. that

  620. little

  621. amount

  622. of

  623. yeast

  624. worked

  625. through

  626. the

  627. whole

  628. dough

  629. leavened

  630. the

  631. whole

  632. lump

  633. it's

  634. potent

  635. stuff

  636. so too

  637. is the

  638. kingdom

  639. of

  640. God

  641. the

  642. stuff

  643. from

  644. heaven

  645. the

  646. stuff

  647. from

  648. God

  649. it's

  650. powerful

  651. stuff

  652. and it

  653. only

  654. takes

  655. a

  656. little

  657. bit

  658. to

  659. make

  660. a

  661. huge

  662. difference

  663. a

  664. surprising

  665. difference

  666. we could

  667. talk about

  668. this in

  669. terms of

  670. the

  671. number

  672. of

  673. people

  674. we

  675. started

  676. with

  677. just

  678. a

  679. little

  680. bit

  681. Abram

  682. Isaac

  683. and

  684. Jacob

  685. one

  686. family

  687. and

  688. over

  689. time

  690. from

  691. generation

  692. to

  693. generation

  694. as

  695. Nebuchadnezzar

  696. said

  697. the

  698. kingdom

  699. has

  700. been

  701. rising

  702. and

  703. growing

  704. so

  705. that

  706. at

  707. the

  708. end

  709. when

  710. Jesus

  711. returns

  712. and the

  713. bread

  714. comes out

  715. of the

  716. oven

  717. and the

  718. world

  719. will go

  720. whoa

  721. where did

  722. that come

  723. from

  724. there's

  725. millions

  726. of them

  727. not

  728. holes

  729. in the

  730. bread

  731. but

  732. citizens

  733. of the

  734. kingdom

  735. this

  736. thing

  737. is

  738. huge

  739. where

  740. did

  741. this

  742. come

  743. from

  744. just

  745. from

  746. that

  747. little

  748. bit

  749. that

  750. God

  751. sowed

  752. in

  753. at

  754. the

  755. beginning

  756. you

  757. could

  758. talk

  759. about

  760. this

  761. in

  762. terms

  763. of

  764. one

  765. person's

  766. life

  767. I

  768. mean

  769. we

  770. all

  771. want

  772. to

  773. have

  774. to

  775. be

  776. I

  777. hope

  778. live

  779. godly

  780. moral

  781. Christian

  782. lives

  783. we

  784. wrestle

  785. with

  786. sin

  787. we

  788. want

  789. to

  790. do

  791. better

  792. all

  793. it

  794. takes

  795. is a

  796. little

  797. bit

  798. of

  799. God's

  800. power

  801. little

  802. word

  803. that

  804. he

  805. speaks

  806. and

  807. it

  808. can

  809. do

  810. amazing

  811. stuff

  812. in

  813. the

  814. life

  815. of

  816. one

  817. person

  818. and

  819. bring

  820. great

  821. change

  822. but

  823. as

  824. with

  825. the

  826. yeast

  827. and

  828. as

  829. with

  830. the

  831. tree

  832. it's

  833. not

  834. something

  835. that

  836. happens

  837. in

  838. an

  839. instant

  840. the

  841. dough

  842. takes

  843. time

  844. to

  845. rise

  846. it's

  847. a

  848. gradual

  849. process

  850. you can

  851. stare

  852. and look

  853. at the

  854. dough

  855. as much

  856. as you

  857. want

  858. but you

  859. won't

  860. see

  861. anything

  862. happen

  863. because

  864. it's

  865. gradual

  866. so too

  867. is it

  868. with the

  869. kingdom

  870. of God

  871. this is

  872. a kingdom

  873. that is

  874. very

  875. gradually

  876. rising

  877. so much

  878. so that

  879. to

  880. many in

  881. our world

  882. it's

  883. totally

  884. imperceptible

  885. it's

  886. invisible

  887. they

  888. can't

  889. see

  890. it

  891. there's

  892. an

  893. invisible

  894. quality

  895. to

  896. the

  897. kingdom

  898. of

  899. God

  900. just

  901. like

  902. yeast

  903. you

  904. can't

  905. see

  906. it

  907. in

  908. the

  909. mix

  910. and

  911. if

  912. you

  913. didn't

  914. know

  915. that

  916. it

  917. was

  918. in

  919. there

  920. you

  921. wouldn't

  922. expect

  923. that

  924. when

  925. you

  926. came

  927. back

  928. to

  929. look

  930. at

  931. that

  932. dough

  933. it

  934. would

  935. be

  936. twice

  937. the

  938. size

  939. that

  940. thing's

  941. growing

  942. how

  943. because

  944. of the

  945. yeast

  946. in

  947. it

  948. I

  949. see

  950. this

  951. when

  952. I

  953. look

  954. at

  955. my

  956. kids

  957. you

  958. know

  959. every

  960. day

  961. I

  962. see

  963. them

  964. and

  965. every

  966. day

  967. they

  968. look

  969. just

  970. the

  971. same

  972. as

  973. they

  974. did

  975. the

  976. day

  977. before

  978. but

  979. then

  980. I

  981. go

  982. back

  983. and

  984. I

  985. look

  986. at

  987. a

  988. picture

  989. of

  990. Callie

  991. when

  992. she

  993. was

  994. one

  995. year

  996. old

  997. and

  998. I'm

  999. starting

  1000. to

  1001. look

  1002. at

  1003. everything

  1004. else

  1005. in

  1006. the

  1007. picture

  1008. like

  1009. where

  1010. was

  1011. this

  1012. when

  1013. was

  1014. this

  1015. because

  1016. is

  1017. this

  1018. Callie

  1019. when

  1020. she

  1021. was

  1022. one

  1023. or

  1024. is

  1025. this

  1026. Laura

  1027. when

  1028. she

  1029. was

  1030. one

  1031. I

  1032. can't

  1033. even

  1034. recognize

  1035. the

  1036. kid

  1037. in

  1038. the

  1039. picture

  1040. anymore

  1041. that's

  1042. how it

  1043. is

  1044. with

  1045. the

  1046. kingdom

  1047. of

  1048. God

  1049. the

  1050. change

  1051. is

  1052. happening

  1053. and

  1054. it's

  1055. drastic

  1056. it's

  1057. going to

  1058. surprise

  1059. us

  1060. but

  1061. when

  1062. we

  1063. try

  1064. to

  1065. look

  1066. right

  1067. at

  1068. it

  1069. and

  1070. see

  1071. it

  1072. we

  1073. don't

  1074. see

  1075. it

  1076. it's

  1077. something

  1078. that

  1079. God

  1080. is

  1081. growing

  1082. and

  1083. bringing

  1084. gradually

  1085. over

  1086. time

  1087. Jesus

  1088. once

  1089. had a

  1090. little

  1091. bit

  1092. of

  1093. a

  1094. conversation

  1095. with

  1096. the

  1097. Pharisees

  1098. and

  1099. I'll

  1100. read

  1101. this

  1102. for

  1103. you

  1104. it's

  1105. interesting

  1106. once

  1107. on

  1108. being

  1109. asked

  1110. by

  1111. the

  1112. Pharisees

  1113. when

  1114. the

  1115. kingdom

  1116. of

  1117. God

  1118. would

  1119. come

  1120. Jesus

  1121. replied

  1122. the

  1123. coming

  1124. of

  1125. the

  1126. kingdom

  1127. of

  1128. God

  1129. is

  1130. not

  1131. something

  1132. that

  1133. can

  1134. be

  1135. observed

  1136. nor

  1137. will

  1138. people

  1139. say

  1140. well

  1141. here

  1142. it

  1143. is

  1144. or

  1145. there

  1146. it

  1147. is

  1148. because

  1149. the

  1150. kingdom

  1151. of

  1152. God

  1153. is

  1154. in

  1155. your

  1156. midst

  1157. I've

  1158. always

  1159. found

  1160. that

  1161. to

  1162. be

  1163. funny

  1164. in a

  1165. sense

  1166. you know

  1167. you're

  1168. the

  1169. Pharisees

  1170. when's

  1171. it

  1172. coming

  1173. Jesus

  1174. is

  1175. like

  1176. it's

  1177. here

  1178. it's

  1179. already

  1180. in

  1181. your

  1182. midst

  1183. but

  1184. you

  1185. can't

  1186. see

  1187. it

  1188. just

  1189. like

  1190. the

  1191. yeast

  1192. and

  1193. the

  1194. dough

  1195. you

  1196. can't

  1197. see

  1198. it

  1199. it

  1200. has

  1201. an

  1202. invisible

  1203. quality

  1204. to

  1205. it

  1206. it

  1207. begins

  1208. with

  1209. something

  1210. small

  1211. and

  1212. insignificant

  1213. and

  1214. it

  1215. rises

  1216. gradually

  1217. over

  1218. time

  1219. but

  1220. at

  1221. the

  1222. end

  1223. it

  1224. will

  1225. be

  1226. undeniable

  1227. and

  1228. it

  1229. will

  1230. take

  1231. the

  1232. world

  1233. by

  1234. surprise

  1235. what

  1236. God's

  1237. power

  1238. has

  1239. done

  1240. and

  1241. so

  1242. what

  1243. are

  1244. there

  1245. in

  1246. these

  1247. parables

  1248. for

  1249. us

  1250. today

  1251. I

  1252. mean

  1253. this

  1254. is

  1255. interesting

  1256. learn a

  1257. little

  1258. bit

  1259. about

  1260. yeast

  1261. and

  1262. a

  1263. little

  1264. bit

  1265. about

  1266. trees

  1267. and

  1268. what

  1269. is

  1270. there

  1271. for

  1272. us

  1273. today

  1274. in

  1275. it

  1276. why

  1277. did

  1278. Jesus

  1279. tell

  1280. these

  1281. parables

  1282. as I

  1283. think of

  1284. the

  1285. Pharisees

  1286. and

  1287. their

  1288. question

  1289. I

  1290. wonder

  1291. if we

  1292. kind of

  1293. think

  1294. the

  1295. same

  1296. way

  1297. the

  1298. kingdom

  1299. of

  1300. God

  1301. kingdom

  1302. of

  1303. heaven

  1304. like

  1305. that

  1306. that's

  1307. all

  1308. future

  1309. when

  1310. will

  1311. it

  1312. come

  1313. what

  1314. difference

  1315. would

  1316. it

  1317. make

  1318. in

  1319. our

  1320. lives

  1321. if

  1322. we

  1323. really

  1324. embrace

  1325. the

  1326. reality

  1327. that

  1328. Jesus

  1329. is

  1330. teaching

  1331. here

  1332. and

  1333. that

  1334. he

  1335. says

  1336. to

  1337. the

  1338. Pharisees

  1339. that

  1340. the

  1341. kingdom

  1342. is

  1343. here

  1344. it's

  1345. now

  1346. it's

  1347. not

  1348. just

  1349. a

  1350. future

  1351. thing

  1352. that

  1353. you

  1354. know

  1355. our

  1356. faith

  1357. is

  1358. is

  1359. a

  1360. ticket

  1361. to

  1362. get

  1363. into

  1364. that

  1365. kingdom

  1366. someday

  1367. and

  1368. in the

  1369. meantime

  1370. we

  1371. just

  1372. go

  1373. about

  1374. our

  1375. lives

  1376. no

  1377. the

  1378. kingdom

  1379. is

  1380. here

  1381. it's

  1382. now

  1383. it's

  1384. been

  1385. in

  1386. the

  1387. works

  1388. all

  1389. the

  1390. way

  1391. back

  1392. to

  1393. Abram

  1394. should

  1395. it

  1396. not

  1397. should

  1398. we

  1399. not

  1400. be

  1401. able

  1402. to

  1403. say

  1404. that

  1405. through

  1406. us

  1407. those

  1408. of

  1409. us

  1410. who

  1411. belong

  1412. to

  1413. Christ

  1414. and

  1415. believe

  1416. in

  1417. him

  1418. to

  1419. our

  1420. world

  1421. that

  1422. the

  1423. kingdom

  1424. of

  1425. God

  1426. is

  1427. in

  1428. your

  1429. midst

  1430. I

  1431. was

  1432. trying

  1433. to

  1434. think

  1435. what

  1436. what

  1437. analogy

  1438. can

  1439. I

  1440. give

  1441. to

  1442. describe

  1443. this

  1444. and

  1445. the

  1446. only

  1447. thing

  1448. that

  1449. rider

  1450. nation

  1451. I

  1452. have

  1453. always

  1454. liked

  1455. that

  1456. term

  1457. rider

  1458. nation

  1459. even

  1460. though

  1461. the

  1462. fans

  1463. of

  1464. the

  1465. riders

  1466. are

  1467. mostly

  1468. from

  1469. Saskatchewan

  1470. rider

  1471. nation

  1472. is

  1473. bigger

  1474. than

  1475. that

  1476. it

  1477. allows

  1478. for

  1479. fans

  1480. from

  1481. all

  1482. over

  1483. the

  1484. country

  1485. from

  1486. any

  1487. province

  1488. you

  1489. could

  1490. be

  1491. of

  1492. rider

  1493. nation

  1494. even

  1495. if

  1496. you're

  1497. living

  1498. in

  1499. Quebec

  1500. and

  1501. surrounded

  1502. by

  1503. Alouette

  1504. fans

  1505. I

  1506. think

  1507. that's

  1508. what

  1509. the

  1510. kind

  1511. of

  1512. thing

  1513. that

  1514. Jesus

  1515. is

  1516. driving

  1517. at

  1518. here

  1519. the

  1520. kingdom

  1521. of

  1522. God

  1523. is

  1524. in

  1525. your

  1526. midst

  1527. a

  1528. nation

  1529. within

  1530. the

  1531. nation

  1532. and

  1533. at

  1534. the

  1535. end

  1536. a

  1537. nation

  1538. from

  1539. among

  1540. the

  1541. nations

  1542. which

  1543. means

  1544. that

  1545. we

  1546. are

  1547. citizens

  1548. we

  1549. are

  1550. sons

  1551. and

  1552. daughters

  1553. of

  1554. the

  1555. kingdom

  1556. those

  1557. of

  1558. us

  1559. who

  1560. believe

  1561. and

  1562. belong

  1563. to

  1564. Jesus

  1565. today

  1566. right

  1567. now

  1568. we

  1569. got

  1570. thinking

  1571. about

  1572. this

  1573. in

  1574. terms

  1575. of

  1576. sports

  1577. do

  1578. you

  1579. wear

  1580. your

  1581. favorite

  1582. colors

  1583. to

  1584. your

  1585. team's

  1586. game

  1587. proudly

  1588. do

  1589. you

  1590. wear

  1591. them

  1592. proudly

  1593. even

  1594. when

  1595. you're

  1596. not

  1597. at

  1598. the

  1599. game

  1600. whenever

  1601. the

  1602. conversation

  1603. turns

  1604. towards

  1605. that

  1606. do

  1607. you

  1608. take

  1609. the

  1610. opportunity

  1611. to

  1612. remind

  1613. people

  1614. about

  1615. how

  1616. awesome

  1617. your

  1618. team

  1619. is

  1620. and

  1621. what

  1622. they

  1623. did

  1624. right

  1625. in

  1626. the

  1627. game

  1628. does

  1629. your

  1630. heart

  1631. swell

  1632. with

  1633. pride

  1634. whenever

  1635. they

  1636. score

  1637. a

  1638. goal

  1639. whenever

  1640. they

  1641. win

  1642. a

  1643. game

  1644. that's

  1645. just

  1646. sports

  1647. and

  1648. recreation

  1649. how

  1650. much

  1651. more

  1652. should

  1653. it

  1654. be

  1655. with

  1656. our

  1657. belonging

  1658. to

  1659. the

  1660. nation

  1661. of

  1662. God

  1663. the

  1664. kingdom

  1665. of

  1666. heaven

  1667. do

  1668. we

  1669. wear

  1670. our

  1671. colors

  1672. proudly

  1673. because

  1674. we

  1675. belong

  1676. to

  1677. Jesus

  1678. nation

  1679. do

  1680. we

  1681. take

  1682. the

  1683. opportunities

  1684. when

  1685. the

  1686. conversation

  1687. comes

  1688. up

  1689. to

  1690. tell

  1691. people

  1692. about

  1693. the

  1694. nation

  1695. the

  1696. kingdom

  1697. that

  1698. we

  1699. belong

  1700. to

  1701. ah

  1702. but

  1703. there's

  1704. the

  1705. rub

  1706. the

  1707. kingdom

  1708. that

  1709. we

  1710. belong

  1711. to

  1712. is

  1713. invisible

  1714. it's

  1715. seemingly

  1716. imperceptible

  1717. many

  1718. people

  1719. deny

  1720. its

  1721. existence

  1722. we

  1723. don't

  1724. necessarily

  1725. want

  1726. to

  1727. make

  1728. much

  1729. of

  1730. or

  1731. sing

  1732. the

  1733. praises

  1734. of

  1735. something

  1736. that

  1737. people

  1738. don't

  1739. believe

  1740. in

  1741. can't

  1742. see

  1743. or

  1744. oppose

  1745. don't

  1746. agree

  1747. with

  1748. the

  1749. values

  1750. of

  1751. Peter

  1752. described

  1753. it

  1754. this

  1755. way

  1756. in

  1757. his

  1758. letter

  1759. Peter

  1760. 2

  1761. verse

  1762. 9

  1763. he

  1764. said

  1765. but

  1766. you

  1767. are

  1768. a

  1769. chosen

  1770. people

  1771. a

  1772. holy

  1773. nation

  1774. God's

  1775. special

  1776. possession

  1777. that

  1778. you

  1779. may

  1780. declare

  1781. the

  1782. praises

  1783. of

  1784. him

  1785. who

  1786. called

  1787. you

  1788. out

  1789. of

  1790. darkness

  1791. into

  1792. his

  1793. wonderful

  1794. light

  1795. and

  1796. he

  1797. wasn't

  1798. talking

  1799. to

  1800. the

  1801. Israelites

  1802. he

  1803. this

  1804. letter

  1805. was

  1806. written

  1807. to

  1808. the

  1809. churches

  1810. in

  1811. Asia

  1812. Minor

  1813. whole

  1814. mixture

  1815. of

  1816. believers

  1817. different

  1818. nationalities

  1819. you

  1820. are

  1821. a

  1822. holy

  1823. nation

  1824. you

  1825. belong

  1826. to

  1827. a

  1828. nation

  1829. that

  1830. doesn't

  1831. have

  1832. geopolitical

  1833. boundaries

  1834. just like

  1835. rider

  1836. nation

  1837. this

  1838. is

  1839. Jesus

  1840. nation

  1841. do

  1842. you

  1843. wear

  1844. your

  1845. colors

  1846. proudly

  1847. and

  1848. it's

  1849. not

  1850. easy

  1851. when

  1852. many

  1853. in

  1854. our

  1855. world

  1856. don't

  1857. see

  1858. it

  1859. just

  1860. like

  1861. with

  1862. the

  1863. east

  1864. don't

  1865. see

  1866. it

  1867. Peter

  1868. also

  1869. said

  1870. this

  1871. in

  1872. 2

  1873. Peter

  1874. 3

  1875. 3

  1876. above

  1877. all

  1878. you

  1879. must

  1880. understand

  1881. that

  1882. in

  1883. the

  1884. last

  1885. days

  1886. scoffers

  1887. will

  1888. come

  1889. scoffing

  1890. and

  1891. following

  1892. their

  1893. own

  1894. evil

  1895. desires

  1896. they

  1897. will

  1898. say

  1899. where

  1900. is

  1901. this

  1902. coming

  1903. he

  1904. promised

  1905. ever

  1906. since

  1907. our

  1908. ancestors

  1909. died

  1910. everything

  1911. goes

  1912. on

  1913. as

  1914. it

  1915. has

  1916. since

  1917. the

  1918. beginning

  1919. they

  1920. don't

  1921. see

  1922. it

  1923. they

  1924. don't

  1925. see

  1926. the

  1927. kingdom

  1928. but

  1929. as

  1930. Peter

  1931. says

  1932. the

  1933. day

  1934. of

  1935. the

  1936. Lord

  1937. will

  1938. come

  1939. like

  1940. a

  1941. thief

  1942. it

  1943. will

  1944. take

  1945. the

  1946. world

  1947. by

  1948. surprise

  1949. and

  1950. on

  1951. that

  1952. day

  1953. which

  1954. side

  1955. do

  1956. you

  1957. want

  1958. to

  1959. be

  1960. on

  1961. whose

  1962. kingdom

  1963. do

  1964. you

  1965. want

  1966. to

  1967. belong

  1968. to

  1969. the

  1970. kingdom

  1971. of

  1972. heaven

  1973. is

  1974. not

  1975. like

  1976. any

  1977. kingdom

  1978. this

  1979. world

  1980. has

  1981. ever

  1982. known

  1983. if

  1984. you

  1985. could

  1986. spend

  1987. your

  1988. life

  1989. for

  1990. one

  1991. cause

  1992. what

  1993. would

  1994. it

  1995. be

  1996. if

  1997. you

  1998. can

  1999. sing

  2000. the

  2001. praises

  2002. of

  2003. one

  2004. thing

  2005. what

  2006. would

  2007. it

  2008. be

  2009. for

  2010. you

  2011. are

  2012. a

  2013. chosen

  2014. people

  2015. a

  2016. holy

  2017. nation

  2018. God's

  2019. special

  2020. possession

  2021. why

  2022. that

  2023. you

  2024. may

  2025. declare

  2026. the

  2027. praises

  2028. of

  2029. him

  2030. who

  2031. called

  2032. you

  2033. out

  2034. of

  2035. darkness

  2036. into

  2037. his

  2038. wonderful

  2039. light

  2040. and

  2041. so

  2042. let's

  2043. not

  2044. be

  2045. discouraged

  2046. I

  2047. think

  2048. this

  2049. is

  2050. one

  2051. of

  2052. the

  2053. things

  2054. that

  2055. we

  2056. really

  2057. get

  2058. here

  2059. from

  2060. Jesus

  2061. because

  2062. it's

  2063. easy

  2064. to

  2065. be

  2066. discouraged

  2067. we

  2068. want

  2069. change

  2070. to

  2071. happen

  2072. now

  2073. we

  2074. want

  2075. to

  2076. see

  2077. justice

  2078. now

  2079. we

  2080. want

  2081. the

  2082. laws

  2083. in

  2084. our

  2085. land

  2086. to

  2087. change

  2088. now

  2089. oh

  2090. it's

  2091. coming

  2092. the

  2093. kingdom

  2094. of

  2095. God

  2096. will

  2097. come

  2098. in

  2099. its

  2100. fullness

  2101. that

  2102. tree

  2103. will

  2104. be

  2105. fully

  2106. grown

  2107. it

  2108. will

  2109. be

  2110. the

  2111. greatest

  2112. and

  2113. most

  2114. glorious

  2115. when

  2116. it

  2117. comes

  2118. but

  2119. we

  2120. need

  2121. to

  2122. be

  2123. patient

  2124. we

  2125. need

  2126. to

  2127. be

  2128. patient

  2129. and

  2130. wait

  2131. or

  2132. maybe

  2133. it's

  2134. that

  2135. person

  2136. in

  2137. your

  2138. life

  2139. I

  2140. just

  2141. wish

  2142. that

  2143. they

  2144. would

  2145. change

  2146. but

  2147. it

  2148. doesn't

  2149. always

  2150. happen

  2151. in

  2152. an

  2153. instant

  2154. with

  2155. God's

  2156. kingdom

  2157. he

  2158. often

  2159. does

  2160. things

  2161. gradually

  2162. over

  2163. time

  2164. oh

  2165. the

  2166. change

  2167. will

  2168. be

  2169. obvious

  2170. at

  2171. the

  2172. end

  2173. and

  2174. it

  2175. takes

  2176. faith

  2177. and

  2178. trust

  2179. that

  2180. God

  2181. is

  2182. truly

  2183. at

  2184. work

  2185. and

  2186. that

  2187. the

  2188. stuff

  2189. of

  2190. his

  2191. word

  2192. his

  2193. power

  2194. is

  2195. powerful

  2196. enough

  2197. to

  2198. leaven

  2199. that

  2200. whole

  2201. lump

  2202. and

  2203. so

  2204. I

  2205. asked
