  1. If you have your Bible with you, please open it up to Genesis chapter 13.

    Genesis 13 chapter mention

  2. Genesis chapter 13.

    Genesis 13 chapter mention

  3. I want to begin this morning with a question to you.

  4. As you make big decisions or plans, what's your starting place?

  5. How do you typically begin that process of making decisions?

  6. Whether it's the decision to have a change of job or to move or a large purchase.

  7. Do you sit down and write out a list of pros and cons?

  8. Do you stop and pray and ask that God would show you what to do?

  9. Do you talk to some of the other people that are your friends or family about what they would do if they were in the same situation?

  10. What's your process as you think about making bigger decisions in life?

  11. And what happens when there's a little bit of a roadblock?

  12. You've kind of made your plan or your decision and something comes up.

  13. How do you wrestle through those kinds of things?

  14. Do you stick with your original decision?

  15. Or is that kind of indication that that's not the right decision and we're going to go this way?

  16. These are the kinds of questions that are stirred up and answered for us in the story that we're going to look at this morning.

  17. We're tracking through the story of Abraham.

  18. Last Sunday we saw how there was a severe famine in the land and he packed up the whole household and everybody went down to Egypt.

  19. We saw how down there he really blew it with regards to his wife and Pharaoh.

  20. He kind of, he failed.

  21. And yet God blessed him.

  22. God was gracious to him.

  23. In a sense he ended up plundering Pharaoh and carrying back all of these animals and wealth and servants back to Canaan.

  24. And that's really where we pick up the story this morning.

  25. Chapter 13, verse 1.

  26. And there, and where he had first built an altar.

  27. There, Abram called on the name of the Lord.

  28. So here's Abraham.

  29. You've got to wonder what the people living in the land would have been thinking.

  30. They saw him going away because things were scarce.

  31. And now they see him coming back with even more than he left with.

  32. And here he is coming into the land.

  33. And he goes to the place that he had been before where he had built an altar.

  34. And he calls on the name of the Lord.

  35. He worships the Lord.

  36. Moses lets us know that he had become very wealthy.

  37. And the sense here is that most of this, or a lot of this, came from Pharaoh and his trip down to Egypt.

  38. His herds are growing.

  39. His flocks are getting bigger.

  40. There's silver and gold in the money pouch.

  41. Things seem to be going pretty well.

  42. But then something unexpected happens.

  43. Verse 5.

  44. Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.

  45. But the land could not support them while they stayed together,

  46. for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.

  47. And quarreling arose between Abram's herders and lots.

  48. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time.

  49. So everything seems to be going well for Abraham until he realizes that it's not.

  50. He starts hearing complaints, reports from his herders who are in conflict with the herders of his nephew.

  51. In one sense, it's a good problem to have.

  52. We've got so many animals and the herds of flocks are so large

  53. that we don't have enough space for both of our herds, both of our flocks.

  54. And of course, animals need places to graze.

  55. They need pasture.

  56. They need places where they can have water to drink.

  57. And Moses reminds us, in case we've forgotten, that the Canaanites and Perizzites,

  58. they're already living in the land.

  59. And so Abraham and Lot, they're kind of, they're living off of the scraps that are left over in this land.

  60. The best parts of the land, they're already occupied.

  61. There's already people there with their animals and their farms.

  62. And so they're doing what they can to kind of grow their herds and make out their existence there in this land.

  63. And there starts to become some fighting, some quarreling, some arguments.

  64. What are we going to do about this?

  65. Verse 8.

  66. Abram said to Lot,

  67. Let's not have any quarreling between you and me,

  68. or between your herders and mine,

  69. for we are close relatives.

  70. Is not the whole land before you?

  71. Let's part company.

  72. If you go to the left,

  73. I'll go to the right.

  74. If you go to the right,

  75. I'll go to the left.

  76. At this moment,

  77. they are between Bethel and Ai.

  78. It's in the hill country,

  79. where probably from where they are,

  80. they can look around and see the land all around them.

  81. And Abram kind of comes up with this solution.

  82. Our herds are growing.

  83. They need food.

  84. They need water.

  85. So let's part company.

  86. But notice the reason that Abraham gives for why.

  87. We might expect that it's because my flocks are not getting the water that they need,

  88. or because your herders have been doing this and that,

  89. or because there's not enough grass here for my animals.

  90. But there's no indication of that from Abraham.

  91. What are his reasons for wanting to go separate ways?

  92. He cares most about the relationship between him and his nephew.

  93. He says,

  94. let's not have any quarreling between you and me,

  95. because we're close relatives.

  96. We're kin.

  97. We're family.

  98. So let's,

  99. let there not be any fighting or disputing between us.

  100. Let's go our separate ways.

  101. And then Abraham does something beautiful.

  102. He takes him up,

  103. we assume,

  104. onto a hill or to a vantage point from where they can see the land all around them.

  105. And he says,

  106. is not the whole land before you?

  107. Lot,

  108. where would you like to live?

  109. Where would you like to,

  110. to graze your animals?

  111. Where,

  112. where do you want to go and settle?

  113. Take your pick.

  114. If you go over here,

  115. I'll go over there.

  116. If you want to stay here,

  117. I'll pack up and move,

  118. move along.

  119. But you can have the first choice.

  120. This is a beautiful moment.

  121. It's,

  122. it's,

  123. uh,

  124. for two reasons.

  125. First,

  126. it's a beautiful picture of love.

  127. For Abraham to,

  128. to treat his nephew this way.

  129. To,

  130. to desire that his nephew do well and have that opportunity to choose the best,

  131. to,

  132. to pick where he's going to go.

  133. So it's kind of reminiscent of what Paul says,

  134. do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit,

  135. but in humility,

  136. consider others as more important than yourselves.

  137. Looking not only to your own interests,

  138. but also to the interests of others,

  139. which is the same attitude that,

  140. that Jesus himself had.

  141. As he came down from heaven into our world,

  142. to see that our need was met and at great cost to himself.

  143. This is God's kind of love.

  144. And this is a moment where Abraham really shines.

  145. I mean,

  146. down in Egypt,

  147. not so much with how he treated his wife there,

  148. but here he really does shine as someone who is,

  149. who is living God's kind of love in the way that he treats lot.

  150. But this is also a moment in which Abraham's faith is seen as well,

  151. because God has made them the promise.

  152. I'm going to give this land to you and to your offspring.

  153. Lot,

  154. he's,

  155. he's the nephew.

  156. He's not quite in that family.

  157. He's kind of been tagging along all the way since Ur.

  158. He's got his own dreams and aspirations and plans.

  159. He's,

  160. he's kind of,

  161. he's been there,

  162. but the Abraham doesn't say,

  163. well,

  164. the promise was made to me.

  165. So this is my land.

  166. I'm going to live here and you need to go over there.

  167. We see a glimpse of his faith here in this moment in his willingness to kind of

  168. just surrender and say,

  169. say to lot,

  170. you can take the pick anywhere you want.

  171. You choose,

  172. you go there in his heart.

  173. We can kind of see that he's trusting that the Lord will sort this out,

  174. how he will keep his promise.

  175. So what does lot choose?

  176. Verse 10,

  177. Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan towards Zoar was well

  178. watered like the garden of the Lord,

  179. like the land of Egypt.

  180. This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.

  181. So lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the

  182. east.

  183. The two men parted company.

  184. Abraham lived in the land of Canaan while lot lived among the cities of the

  185. plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.

  186. Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.

  187. So what does Abraham do?

  188. It's not the whole land before you.

  189. Take your pick.

  190. Lot looks up.

  191. He looks around and his eyes settle on that well watered land to the east where it's

  192. especially green compared to all the other land.

  193. It's green like the stories of Eden.

  194. It's green like the land of Egypt where we just came from.

  195. He looks at it and desire rises in his heart.

  196. That's where I want to go.

  197. That's the kind of place that I want to settle.

  198. No more of this scrounging for places for our flocks to graze.

  199. I mean, look at that over there.

  200. There's plenty of that over there.

  201. I want to go there.

  202. And he makes his choice.

  203. And he sets out and he goes.

  204. But there's a couple ominous notes in Moses' description of this choice.

  205. First is that statement in parentheses there.

  206. This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.

  207. This land to the east was kind of, it was near the Jordan.

  208. It was rich, fertile land.

  209. It was also near the Dead Sea.

  210. It was, it says the plain, but it was kind of the Jordan Valley.

  211. It's kind of on the edge of the land of Canaan.

  212. But there's two cities there, Sodom and Gomorrah.

  213. And Moses lets us know that they're going to be destroyed.

  214. They were destroyed.

  215. As he looks back on this, this moment.

  216. And then again in verse 13.

  217. Now the people of Sodom were wicked.

  218. And were sinning greatly against the Lord.

  219. The emphasis here is very strong.

  220. They were wicked.

  221. They were evil.

  222. And they were sinning.

  223. And not just sinning.

  224. They were sinning greatly against the Lord.

  225. And those of us who have read the story, we know how things turn out for Lot.

  226. We're not actually going to cover that in this series.

  227. But if you want to, you can read it in Genesis 18 and 19.

  228. Things don't go well for Lot.

  229. For Lot.

  230. He pitches his tent near Sodom.

  231. And he goes there hoping to get this good and prosperous life.

  232. And he ends up losing almost everything and barely escaping with his life.

  233. He and his two daughters.

  234. God later destroys those cities because of the outcry against them and the wickedness that's going on there.

  235. And so Lot, he looks around and he sees.

  236. He sees the rich, fertile land.

  237. He desires it.

  238. Yes.

  239. That's the place where I can thrive.

  240. That's the place where my animals, my herds will increase.

  241. The more they increase, the more money, the better things will go.

  242. It reminds him of back in Egypt.

  243. And yes, this is my chance to live the dream.

  244. That's what he sees as he looks out and makes his choice.

  245. But he overlooks this deep, disturbing reality of what's going on in that region.

  246. And we kind of got to wonder what his thought process is here.

  247. I mean, he's been journeying with Abraham all this time.

  248. And so he's no stranger to this idea of the Lord, of Yahweh, Abraham's God.

  249. Abraham has been building altars here and there to him.

  250. He's been worshiping him very visibly, very publicly.

  251. Lot has seen how things have gone for Abraham.

  252. Just down in Egypt, how things went really well for him.

  253. And we have to know that Lot would have known what was going on in this region.

  254. These cities, their reputation was well known.

  255. They're not living the way that Abraham's God would want.

  256. In fact, they're known for doing some pretty terrible things to the people around them.

  257. And so Lot looks out and he sees, he desires, but he misses, he overlooks this deep and dark, unseen reality of what's going on.

  258. And at the end, it almost costs him everything.

  259. It's kind of a living parable of those words that Jesus spoke thousands of years later.

  260. It reminds me of them anyway.

  261. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world and yet forfeit his soul?

  262. And so as we think about making decisions, making plans, what is it that we are looking to make our decision on?

  263. What are we basing our decision on?

  264. Lot makes his choice and he goes his way.

  265. And then with him gone, verse 14,

  266. The Lord said to Abram, after Lot parted from him,

  267. Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west.

  268. All the land that you see, I will give to you and your offspring forever.

  269. I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth so that if anyone could count the dust,

  270. then your offspring could be counted.

  271. Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land for I am giving it to you.

  272. Abram's just been up on the hilltop and looking around.

  273. This moment kind of just happened.

  274. He was up there with Lot.

  275. He said, Look around.

  276. Take your pick.

  277. And then after he's gone, in a sense, the Lord takes Abraham up to the hilltop and says,

  278. Look around.

  279. Look north.

  280. Look south.

  281. Look east.

  282. Look west.

  283. Look all around.

  284. But he doesn't say, Take your pick.

  285. He says, All the land that you see.

  286. In every direction, all around you, as far as your eyes can see, all the land that you see,

  287. I will give to you and your offspring.

  288. Wow.

  289. What a promise.

  290. What a moment.

  291. I mean, this is not a new promise.

  292. We already heard that as Abraham first came into the land, the Lord said to him,

  293. To your offspring, I will give this land.

  294. But it must have been wonderful to hear it again from the Lord in that moment.

  295. To have him reaffirm it, especially after having left the land, gone down to Egypt, blowing it there,

  296. and then coming back to have the Lord say it again.

  297. And this time, the Lord adds to the promise.

  298. The first time it was to your offspring, I will give this land.

  299. Now the Lord adds, not just to your offspring, to you and your offspring.

  300. I will give this land.

  301. And not just for a time.

  302. He adds forever.

  303. Wow.

  304. Wow.

  305. What a promise.

  306. He goes on.

  307. He says,

  308. I will make your offspring innumerable, beyond numbering.

  309. That if, just like the dust of the earth can't be counted by people,

  310. because it's just too many.

  311. The day that it can be counted is the day that someone will be able to number your descendants,

  312. your offspring.

  313. And then he tells Abraham to go on a little tour.

  314. Go.

  315. Walk through the land.

  316. Walk through the length and the breadth of the land.

  317. Prepare your heart to receive this.

  318. For I am giving it to you.

  319. What a promise.

  320. Abraham's response.

  321. How I wish we had more details here about what he's thinking as he hears this from the Lord.

  322. All we get is what's in verse 18.

  323. So Abraham, presumably after he went on his tour,

  324. went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron,

  325. where he pitched his tents.

  326. There he built an altar to the Lord.

  327. Sounds pretty informational, but I think that there is something there.

  328. I mean, these are big promises.

  329. If Abraham thought that the Lord was lying to him or that these were empty,

  330. would he be building an altar and calling on the name of the Lord and continuing this relationship?

  331. I don't think so.

  332. So the sense that we get here, the picture we get here,

  333. is that he accepted the Lord's word.

  334. He believed it.

  335. He trusted him.

  336. He was going to continue to worship him and call on his name.

  337. But the question that we're kind of left with at the end of all of this is,

  338. is now what?

  339. I mean, Abraham has been given these amazing promises.

  340. Let's remember for a moment just what they are.

  341. Back in Ur, I will bless you.

  342. I will make you into a great nation.

  343. I will make your name great.

  344. I will protect you.

  345. And I will bless all the families of the earth through you.

  346. When he first enters the land,

  347. I will give this land to your offspring.

  348. And now he's heard something new

  349. that the Lord has added to his promises.

  350. I will not just give this land to your offspring.

  351. I will give it to you.

  352. To you, Abraham.

  353. Now, of course, this morning here,

  354. we know how the rest of the story goes,

  355. but I want us to get into Abraham's head for a moment.

  356. He doesn't know how the story goes.

  357. How is he processing this?

  358. How is he thinking about this?

  359. To me?

  360. All this land that I can see,

  361. the Lord's going to give this to me?

  362. I mean, what would he have to do to make that happen

  363. before I die?

  364. That's what it means to you, right?

  365. Not just to your offspring, but to you.

  366. Somehow, the title deed of this entire region

  367. is going to be given to me.

  368. What about that word forever?

  369. To you and your offspring,

  370. I will give this land forever.

  371. What does that mean?

  372. What is he thinking of?

  373. As he hears that,

  374. from the moment God gives this to me

  375. and I receive it,

  376. it will be in my possession,

  377. it will be in my control

  378. from that point on forever.

  379. From then on,

  380. there will always be my descendants

  381. in this land,

  382. living here,

  383. in control of this land,

  384. possessing this land.

  385. And

  386. descendants

  387. that are beyond number.

  388. What kind of picture

  389. is this stirring up in Abraham's mind?

  390. He looks out at this land

  391. and he imagines it's full of people,

  392. full of families

  393. with children working and playing.

  394. And they're all

  395. his descendants.

  396. And not just for one moment in time,

  397. but generation

  398. after generation

  399. after generation

  400. after generation

  401. of his descendants

  402. in this land.

  403. This is their home.

  404. How is this going to happen?

  405. These are great promises.

  406. This is what Abraham

  407. has been given

  408. to go on.

  409. And this is kind of what I,

  410. my imagination of,

  411. of,

  412. of how he's processing this

  413. and taking this in.

  414. And yet,

  415. what does he see

  416. when he looks around?

  417. He looks at his wife,

  418. Sarai,

  419. beautiful,

  420. and yet beginning

  421. to show signs of age,

  422. already 70-ish.

  423. For decades,

  424. they've been unable

  425. to conceive.

  426. He looks in his mirror himself

  427. and sees the signs of age.

  428. He's in his 80s-ish.

  429. How is this going to happen?

  430. This would take a miracle.

  431. I mean,

  432. statistically,

  433. this is,

  434. this is borderline impossible.

  435. He looks at this good land

  436. as he walks through it,

  437. as the Lord told him to do.

  438. And what does he see?

  439. He sees a lot of other people.

  440. The Canaanites,

  441. the Perizzites.

  442. He sees other people

  443. who have laid claim

  444. to this land,

  445. who have built homes,

  446. who are running farms,

  447. who have their flocks

  448. and animals

  449. here and there

  450. scattered throughout the land.

  451. He sees cities

  452. that they've built

  453. and are living in

  454. with walls.

  455. He sees kings

  456. and powerful men

  457. who have been getting their way.

  458. How is this going to happen?

  459. How is the Lord

  460. going to take

  461. all of this land

  462. and give it to me?

  463. You've got to know

  464. that's the question

  465. that's rolling on

  466. in his mind.

  467. And the answer

  468. for this moment,

  469. I don't know.

  470. I can't even imagine

  471. how this would come to be.

  472. But what am I going to do?

  473. I'm going to pitch my tent

  474. right here

  475. in this land

  476. because this is the land

  477. that the Lord

  478. has promised to give me.

  479. I'm going to build

  480. an altar to the Lord

  481. and call on his name

  482. and worship

  483. and wait

  484. and see.

  485. What a picture

  486. of faith,

  487. of trust.

  488. At this point

  489. we're probably wondering,

  490. I mean,

  491. what does Abraham

  492. really know

  493. about the Lord?

  494. In the next chapter

  495. we get a little bit

  496. of a clue

  497. and I'm not going to

  498. read the whole story.

  499. It's the story

  500. of how Abraham

  501. goes on a rescue mission

  502. to get Lot

  503. after Lot is captured.

  504. And at the end

  505. of this rescue mission

  506. Abraham has

  507. a conversation

  508. face to face

  509. with the king

  510. of Sodom.

  511. And what does he

  512. say to the king

  513. of Sodom?

  514. verse 22

  515. of chapter 14

  516. he says,

  517. With raised hand

  518. I have sworn

  519. an oath

  520. to the Lord

  521. Yahweh

  522. God most high

  523. creator

  524. of heaven

  525. and earth.

  526. What a thing

  527. to say.

  528. These are big promises

  529. that the Lord

  530. has made

  531. to Abraham.

  532. Yes,

  533. but little by little

  534. Abraham is learning

  535. to trust

  536. Yahweh

  537. the Lord.

  538. Little by little

  539. as he has made

  540. his way

  541. all the way

  542. from Ur

  543. to Canaan

  544. little by little

  545. as he went

  546. down to Egypt

  547. and saw how the Lord

  548. turned that situation

  549. in his favor

  550. Abraham is learning

  551. that the Lord

  552. does keep

  553. his promises.

  554. He is protecting

  555. him.

  556. He is blessing

  557. him.

  558. And now

  559. it's come to the

  560. point we've seen

  561. how he's kind

  562. of grown.

  563. I mean he

  564. he cowered in fear

  565. before Pharaoh

  566. and now

  567. just a chapter

  568. later

  569. this is not long

  570. that much longer

  571. after

  572. he's

  573. telling the king

  574. of Sodom

  575. my allegiance

  576. is to Yahweh.

  577. And he's not

  578. just one

  579. of the many

  580. gods

  581. like Nana

  582. the moon

  583. god

  584. that we

  585. serve

  586. back in Ur

  587. he is

  588. God

  589. most high

  590. the most

  591. high god

  592. not only that

  593. but he is

  594. the creator

  595. of the heaven

  596. of heaven

  597. and earth.

  598. Abraham's

  599. understanding

  600. of who God

  601. is

  602. is growing

  603. and yes

  604. these are

  605. big promises

  606. but this is

  607. a big god

  608. that Abraham

  609. has believed

  610. in.

  611. The Lord

  612. the creator

  613. himself.

  614. It would have

  615. been easy

  616. for Abraham

  617. to laugh

  618. about these

  619. promises.

  620. How is that

  621. how is that

  622. going to happen?

  623. Yeah right.

  624. I mean look

  625. at this place.

  626. Look at my

  627. wife and me.

  628. But he

  629. doesn't.

  630. He chooses

  631. to pitch

  632. his tent

  633. here

  634. and to

  635. trust

  636. and wait

  637. and see.

  638. There's a

  639. lesson to be

  640. learned here

  641. and I don't

  642. think it's

  643. a coincidence

  644. that Lot

  645. and his

  646. story is

  647. sandwiched

  648. right up

  649. against Abraham

  650. and his

  651. story.

  652. Lot

  653. he looked

  654. at the

  655. land all

  656. around him

  657. and he

  658. made his

  659. decision

  660. his plan

  661. his way

  662. by what

  663. he could

  664. see

  665. right here

  666. and now.

  667. And he

  668. missed

  669. the unseen

  670. danger

  671. and

  672. consequences

  673. of making

  674. his home

  675. among

  676. the wicked

  677. and it

  678. almost

  679. cost him

  680. everything.

  681. Abraham

  682. is the

  683. exact

  684. opposite.

  685. He

  686. is now

  687. pitching

  688. his tent

  689. building

  690. an altar

  691. based on

  692. what he

  693. can't

  694. see

  695. what is

  696. unseen

  697. the

  698. reality

  699. of these

  700. promises

  701. which God

  702. has given

  703. to him.

  704. If that's

  705. how it's

  706. going to be

  707. if you're

  708. going to

  709. give me

  710. this land

  711. then I'm

  712. going to

  713. pitch my

  714. tent

  715. right here.

  716. Complete

  717. contrast.

  718. And so

  719. we kind

  720. of are

  721. moved to

  722. this

  723. question

  724. of who

  725. or what

  726. are we

  727. making our

  728. decisions

  729. by,

  730. our plans.

  731. How are

  732. we making

  733. our way

  734. here in

  735. this world?

  736. are we

  737. doing it

  738. like

  739. Lot?

  740. And so

  741. often

  742. that's kind

  743. of the

  744. tendency

  745. we have

  746. isn't it?

  747. We just

  748. look around

  749. well that

  750. looks really

  751. good.

  752. I'm going

  753. to go

  754. after that.

  755. I need

  756. that.

  757. Look at

  758. that nice

  759. house over

  760. there.

  761. It's nicer

  762. than the one

  763. that I've

  764. got.

  765. I want

  766. that.

  767. This

  768. new car,

  769. this

  770. gadget,

  771. this

  772. vacation

  773. package,

  774. this

  775. whatever.

  776. Like Lot,

  777. we so

  778. easily just

  779. look around

  780. and our

  781. eyes come

  782. to rest

  783. and we

  784. desire,

  785. but at

  786. what cost?

  787. What are

  788. the deeper

  789. unseen

  790. realities

  791. at work

  792. in this

  793. situation?

  794. Abraham

  795. teaches us

  796. that we

  797. should make

  798. our decision

  799. first and

  800. foremost

  801. on the

  802. basis of

  803. those

  804. unseen

  805. realities?

  806. That we

  807. should listen

  808. to the

  809. Lord

  810. and to

  811. his

  812. word

  813. and do

  814. our life

  815. according

  816. to it.

  817. Pitch our

  818. tent according

  819. to the

  820. promise that

  821. we've been

  822. given.

  823. Even if

  824. everything

  825. around looks

  826. like how

  827. is that even

  828. going to

  829. work?

  830. How is

  831. that going

  832. to be

  833. possible?

  834. people?

  835. As I

  836. think of

  837. Abraham,

  838. here he

  839. is in

  840. a foreign

  841. land,

  842. he stands

  843. out like

  844. a sore

  845. thumb,

  846. and I

  847. don't think

  848. it was

  849. just because

  850. of the

  851. tone of

  852. his skin

  853. or because

  854. of his

  855. accent

  856. being from

  857. far away.

  858. Those

  859. probably

  860. factored

  861. in too,

  862. but he

  863. stuck out

  864. like a

  865. sore thumb

  866. because here's

  867. a guy who

  868. actually believes

  869. in and

  870. worships

  871. Yahweh.

  872. Look at

  873. him,

  874. he's building

  875. an altar

  876. to him.

  877. That's not

  878. who we

  879. worship around

  880. here,

  881. we worship

  882. Baal.

  883. Can you

  884. believe that?

  885. That guy

  886. would actually

  887. subscribe to

  888. him?

  889. But that's

  890. not all

  891. unlike how

  892. things are

  893. for us

  894. today,

  895. is it?

  896. We live

  897. in a world

  898. that basically

  899. says the

  900. same thing.

  901. look at

  902. those guys.

  903. They

  904. actually

  905. believe in

  906. the God

  907. of the

  908. Bible,

  909. that God

  910. who

  911. condemns

  912. homosexuality

  913. and talks

  914. about sin

  915. and how

  916. we're all

  917. guilty of

  918. it and

  919. how we're

  920. going to

  921. be punished

  922. for it

  923. and hell

  924. and all

  925. that stuff.

  926. I mean,

  927. who believes

  928. that anymore?

  929. Abraham

  930. gives us

  931. this incredible

  932. example

  933. of faith.

  934. If he

  935. really is

  936. the Lord,

  937. then absolutely

  938. I'm going to

  939. live in

  940. allegiance to

  941. him.

  942. I'm going to

  943. build altars

  944. to him and

  945. worship him.

  946. I'm going to

  947. let other

  948. people see.

  949. I'm going to

  950. stick out like

  951. a sore thumb.

  952. Isn't that

  953. what God

  954. has brought

  955. Abraham here

  956. for?

  957. To be a

  958. witness,

  959. a testimony

  960. to his

  961. grace,

  962. a blessing

  963. to all the

  964. families of

  965. the earth,

  966. starting with

  967. the people

  968. around him?

  969. there's so

  970. much we

  971. can learn

  972. from Abraham

  973. about how

  974. we make

  975. our decisions

  976. and our

  977. plans.

  978. We too

  979. have received

  980. promises

  981. from God,

  982. the word

  983. of God.

  984. It looks a

  985. little different.

  986. We have it

  987. here in a

  988. book.

  989. We have

  990. not just

  991. what Abraham

  992. heard,

  993. but we

  994. have more.

  995. We have

  996. the son

  997. of God

  998. himself

  999. described

  1000. in these

  1001. pages

  1002. in his

  1003. words

  1004. here.

  1005. Abraham

  1006. had some

  1007. pretty big

  1008. promises made

  1009. to him,

  1010. but we

  1011. have some

  1012. even bigger

  1013. ones,

  1014. which came

  1015. through Christ.

  1016. An

  1017. inheritance

  1018. in the

  1019. kingdom of

  1020. God that

  1021. is coming

  1022. when Jesus

  1023. returns.

  1024. We have a

  1025. forever promise

  1026. too,

  1027. eternal life

  1028. in that

  1029. kingdom.

  1030. God promised

  1031. to bless

  1032. him,

  1033. to be

  1034. gracious

  1035. to him,

  1036. and we

  1037. have received

  1038. the greatest

  1039. of graces

  1040. and blessing

  1041. through Christ.

  1042. And the

  1043. question is,

  1044. will we make

  1045. our way

  1046. by this,

  1047. by this

  1048. good news,

  1049. as we

  1050. consider what

  1051. we'll do

  1052. in our lives,

  1053. or will we

  1054. do like

  1055. Lot,

  1056. and just

  1057. go after

  1058. what on the

  1059. surface looks

  1060. like it

  1061. will fulfill

  1062. us,

  1063. it will

  1064. make us

  1065. happy.

  1066. Let's

  1067. pray.

  1068. Father,

  1069. we thank

  1070. you for

  1071. your word,

  1072. and we

  1073. proclaim

  1074. you are

  1075. the great

  1076. and glorious

  1077. Lord of the

  1078. universe,

  1079. as we talked

  1080. about in

  1081. Sunday school

  1082. this morning.

  1083. Your son

  1084. is supreme

  1085. over all,

  1086. we worship

  1087. you.

  1088. Help us

  1089. to live

  1090. by faith

  1091. as if all

  1092. of this

  1093. is true

  1094. as it

  1095. is.

  1096. No matter

  1097. what anybody

  1098. else thinks,

  1099. we want

  1100. to bring

  1101. glory to

  1102. your name,

  1103. and we

  1104. thank you

  1105. for the

  1106. grace

  1107. that you

  1108. have given

  1109. to us

  1110. and promised

  1111. us.

  1112. Jesus' name

  1113. we pray.

  1114. Amen.

  1115. Amen.

  1116. Here we go.
