  1. Do you ever find yourself looking around,

  2. maybe at things in your life,

  3. maybe at the world we live in and just wondering in your heart,

  4. God, where are you in all of this?

  5. Maybe it's a prayer that you've been praying,

  6. you've been asking God for something

  7. and the answer hasn't seemed to come yet.

  8. Where are you, God?

  9. Why have you not answered my prayer?

  10. Maybe it's with a big decision that you've been asking for wisdom for

  11. and yet there doesn't seem to be a clear direction.

  12. Maybe it's with some of the situations in your family

  13. or some of the things that we see in our world today.

  14. We know that the Lord has promised to return

  15. and yet it's been 2,000 years since that promise was made.

  16. Where are you, Lord?

  17. How long will it be?

  18. I think we've all felt that at one time or another.

  19. This is the kind of feeling that we find Abraham with this morning

  20. as we continue his story.

  21. If you have your Bible with you,

  22. please open it to Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  23. Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  24. Last Sunday we heard about how Abraham and his nephew Lot

  25. went their separate ways.

  26. Abraham stayed in the promised land.

  27. Lot went to pitch his tent near Sodom.

  28. And not long after he did,

  29. war broke out.

  30. Five regional kings against four.

  31. And unfortunately for Lot,

  32. he was on the losing side.

  33. He was actually captured

  34. and his possessions,

  35. all of it and him,

  36. were taken away as plunder.

  37. Abraham being the wonderful uncle that he is,

  38. when he hears about this,

  39. he goes after Lot.

  40. He rallies the troops, so to speak.

  41. He gets the 318 trained men in his household,

  42. servants,

  43. ready for battle.

  44. And they go out on this rescue mission.

  45. And in the middle of the night,

  46. they strike hard

  47. from two different directions.

  48. They route the enemy.

  49. They rescue Lot.

  50. They bring back all the people

  51. that had been captured

  52. and their possessions

  53. and return them to

  54. the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah

  55. and that area.

  56. It seems like everything's going well.

  57. Abraham ends up playing the role of hero.

  58. And it's after this

  59. that we come to this chapter this morning

  60. where we find Abraham

  61. perhaps wrestling,

  62. wondering where God is

  63. in all of this.

  64. verse 1.

  65. After this,

  66. the word of the Lord

  67. came to Abraham in a vision.

  68. Do not be afraid, Abraham.

  69. I am your shield.

  70. Your reward will be very great.

  71. We'll get to Abraham in a moment

  72. and how he's feeling,

  73. but let's just take a second

  74. to look at what the Lord has said here.

  75. Again, the Lord appears to Abraham

  76. and this is a wonderful moment

  77. whenever it happens

  78. to have the creator

  79. of the universe

  80. appear to you

  81. and speak to you.

  82. And what does he say?

  83. He says,

  84. Do not be afraid, Abraham.

  85. We don't know why he's afraid.

  86. Is it because of the awesome presence

  87. of the Lord in this moment?

  88. Or is it maybe because

  89. he might have made some new enemies

  90. in this recent rescue mission?

  91. We're not sure,

  92. but either way,

  93. the Lord comforts him.

  94. He knows how Abraham is feeling

  95. and he gives him assurance.

  96. You don't need to be afraid.

  97. I am your shield.

  98. I will protect you.

  99. If they want to touch you, Abraham,

  100. they're going to have to come through me first.

  101. Don't be afraid.

  102. I am your shield.

  103. Your reward will be very great.

  104. It's at this last phrase.

  105. Now there's some translation question here.

  106. Is it I am your very great reward

  107. or is it your reward will be very great?

  108. But I think the next verse

  109. kind of tips the balance towards one.

  110. Let's just read it in verse two.

  111. But Abraham said,

  112. Sovereign Lord,

  113. what can you give me

  114. since I remain childless

  115. and the one who will inherit my estate

  116. is Eliezer of Damascus?

  117. And Abraham said,

  118. You have given me no children.

  119. So a servant in my household

  120. will be my heir.

  121. The Lord says,

  122. Your reward will be very great.

  123. And Abraham says,

  124. in response to reward,

  125. What can you give me?

  126. I'm childless.

  127. Literally,

  128. I am ongoing childless.

  129. I remain childless.

  130. The first thing that we notice here

  131. is that Abraham is respectful

  132. in how he expresses this.

  133. He says,

  134. Sovereign Lord

  135. or Lord Yahweh.

  136. A term of great reverence.

  137. We also notice that he's very honest

  138. about what his situation is

  139. and what he sees.

  140. This isn't the first time

  141. that the Lord has made

  142. big promises to Abraham.

  143. And here the Lord is again

  144. making another big promise.

  145. Your reward will be very great.

  146. And Abraham is honest.

  147. What can you give me?

  148. I don't have.

  149. You've said in the past

  150. the sense we get.

  151. I'll give this land

  152. to your offspring

  153. and yet I have no offspring.

  154. Even today,

  155. I remain childless.

  156. You have given me no children.

  157. A servant in my household

  158. is lined up to be my heir.

  159. As Abraham asked these questions,

  160. we're kind of wondering,

  161. what's his attitude here?

  162. Is he bitter?

  163. Is he disappointed?

  164. Is he angry?

  165. Is he expressing doubt

  166. and unbelief in God?

  167. It may be difficult

  168. for some of us to go there

  169. because we so often see Abraham

  170. as this,

  171. he is the man of faith.

  172. The guy who always believed.

  173. And yet,

  174. it kind of seems here

  175. from these questions

  176. that he didn't.

  177. Or that he was,

  178. at the very least,

  179. wrestling with it.

  180. I want to suggest

  181. that perhaps it's both.

  182. In the words,

  183. and I can't help but think

  184. of these words

  185. when I read this,

  186. in the words of the man

  187. who spoke to Jesus

  188. about his child

  189. who was possessed

  190. with a demon.

  191. I believe, Lord,

  192. but help me in my unbelief.

  193. There's evidence of both here

  194. from Abraham.

  195. First of all,

  196. we notice that he's respectful.

  197. We notice that

  198. he's even raised the issue

  199. of the heir,

  200. of this inheritance,

  201. probably because he took

  202. the Lord's word seriously

  203. the first time

  204. and the other times

  205. it's come.

  206. And now,

  207. we also see evidence,

  208. though,

  209. that there's a wrestling

  210. to believe

  211. and to trust.

  212. I believe, Lord,

  213. but I still don't have a child.

  214. You said you would give me

  215. offspring,

  216. and yet,

  217. I don't have any.

  218. You have not given me children.

  219. I think there's a little of both.

  220. I believe, Lord,

  221. but help me in my unbelief.

  222. Now, I want to be clear here.

  223. When we trust the Lord

  224. and take him out his word,

  225. it honors him.

  226. And when we don't,

  227. it doesn't honor him.

  228. Nevertheless,

  229. I think that we find ourself

  230. in this place

  231. that we see Abraham

  232. ourselves,

  233. where we kind of have both.

  234. I hear what you say

  235. in your word, Lord,

  236. and I look at my life,

  237. I look at the things around me,

  238. I look at it all,

  239. and I believe,

  240. but help me

  241. in my unbelief.

  242. Where are you

  243. in this situation?

  244. Where are you?

  245. Where's your answer

  246. to this prayer

  247. that I've been praying?

  248. Where's this return

  249. that you've promised?

  250. It's getting to be

  251. a long time

  252. since you made the promise.

  253. I don't want to say

  254. that it's okay

  255. to doubt

  256. because I don't think

  257. that's what Abraham

  258. is showing us here.

  259. But I do want to say

  260. that it's,

  261. I think we see

  262. from Abraham

  263. that it's okay

  264. to be honest

  265. with the Lord

  266. about what we see,

  267. what we feel.

  268. and even to

  269. ever so respectfully

  270. and humbly

  271. say to the Lord,

  272. this is what you've promised

  273. and yet this is what I see,

  274. this is what I feel.

  275. Would you help me

  276. with my unbelief?

  277. I'm trying to take your word

  278. for what you said,

  279. but it's not easy.

  280. How does the Lord

  281. respond to this?

  282. Verse four,

  283. then the word of the Lord

  284. came to him.

  285. This man

  286. will not be your heir,

  287. but a son

  288. who is your own

  289. flesh and blood

  290. will be your heir.

  291. The Lord took him outside

  292. and said,

  293. look up at the sky

  294. and count the stars.

  295. If indeed

  296. you can count them,

  297. so

  298. shall your offspring

  299. be.

  300. The first thing

  301. that we notice

  302. is that the Lord

  303. doesn't rebuke him

  304. or

  305. give him a slap

  306. on the wrist

  307. for doubting.

  308. In fact,

  309. he seems to do

  310. just the opposite.

  311. Abraham expresses

  312. this mixture

  313. of faith

  314. and yet

  315. wrestling

  316. to believe

  317. and have faith

  318. and the Lord

  319. helps him.

  320. He gives him

  321. assurance.

  322. He gives him

  323. the promise

  324. yet again

  325. and he even

  326. gives it

  327. with more

  328. clarity

  329. and detail.

  330. He says,

  331. no,

  332. Eliezer of Damascus,

  333. this servant

  334. that's next in line

  335. to be your heir,

  336. he's not

  337. the one.

  338. You will

  339. have a son,

  340. your own

  341. flesh and blood,

  342. a son,

  343. a child.

  344. That's where

  345. it's going to start,

  346. Abraham.

  347. That's where

  348. I'm going to start

  349. with keeping

  350. my promise

  351. to you

  352. and this

  353. is where

  354. it's going to end.

  355. He takes him

  356. outside.

  357. Look up at the sky.

  358. Count the stars.

  359. I love the way

  360. the Lord says,

  361. if indeed

  362. you can

  363. count them.

  364. There's so many,

  365. there's so,

  366. it's so vast,

  367. it's beyond numbering

  368. to us

  369. as human beings.

  370. This is where

  371. it's going to start,

  372. Abraham,

  373. with a son

  374. of your own

  375. flesh and blood

  376. and this is where

  377. it's going to end

  378. with your descendants

  379. beyond numbering.

  380. How does Abraham

  381. respond to this?

  382. What does he say

  383. in response?

  384. We've kind of seen

  385. this little

  386. back and forth thing.

  387. The Lord speaks,

  388. Abraham speaks,

  389. then the Lord speaks

  390. and now what does

  391. Abraham have to say?

  392. In verse 6,

  393. the narrator

  394. of the story,

  395. Moses,

  396. kind of interjects

  397. and tells us

  398. what the response is.

  399. You almost get

  400. this picture

  401. that Abraham

  402. is left speechless

  403. just staring up

  404. at the sky.

  405. If we end

  406. the story there,

  407. we wouldn't know

  408. what happened.

  409. And so,

  410. Moses kind of

  411. jumps in

  412. and says,

  413. now Abraham

  414. believed.

  415. And the Lord

  416. credited it

  417. to him

  418. as righteousness.

  419. So here,

  420. Abraham is

  421. looking up

  422. at the sky.

  423. He's heard

  424. the promise again.

  425. Even though

  426. he's wrestled

  427. with believing

  428. these things

  429. because of

  430. what he sees,

  431. in that moment,

  432. he believed.

  433. He embraced

  434. that,

  435. yes,

  436. Lord,

  437. you will do this.

  438. this will

  439. come true.

  440. And the Lord

  441. credited it

  442. to him

  443. as righteousness

  444. and we'll come

  445. back to that.

  446. There's a sense

  447. too,

  448. in this particular

  449. verse,

  450. that it's not

  451. just describing

  452. how he responds

  453. in this moment

  454. as he stares up

  455. at the stars.

  456. People who know

  457. more about

  458. the original language,

  459. they all see it here.

  460. maybe a better

  461. translation is

  462. now,

  463. Abraham had

  464. believed

  465. and the Lord

  466. had credited

  467. it to him

  468. as righteousness.

  469. The sense of that

  470. is not just that

  471. this is how it is

  472. in this moment,

  473. but this is kind

  474. of how it's been

  475. right back

  476. to the beginning

  477. since the Lord

  478. first spoke

  479. to Abraham.

  480. Abraham had

  481. believed.

  482. He took God

  483. at his word

  484. and trusted it.

  485. By and large,

  486. on the whole,

  487. doesn't mean

  488. that he never

  489. had wrestlings

  490. or doubts,

  491. but on the whole

  492. he believed

  493. and on the whole

  494. the Lord

  495. had credited

  496. it to him

  497. as righteousness.

  498. We'll come back

  499. to that

  500. in a moment,

  501. but let's go on

  502. to verse 7

  503. and see how

  504. this story

  505. continues to unfold.

  506. Verse 7,

  507. he also said

  508. to him,

  509. that is,

  510. the Lord

  511. also said

  512. to Abraham,

  513. I am the Lord

  514. who brought you

  515. out of Ur

  516. of the Chaldeans

  517. to give you

  518. this land

  519. to take possession

  520. of it.

  521. But Abraham

  522. said,

  523. Sovereign Lord,

  524. how can I know

  525. that I will gain

  526. possession of it?

  527. Here again,

  528. we see kind of

  529. a similar thing

  530. happening

  531. in verse 7.

  532. He also said

  533. to him,

  534. there's this sense

  535. at which all of this

  536. kind of happened

  537. in one event.

  538. It was kind of

  539. mixed together

  540. and yet Moses

  541. is kind of

  542. separating out

  543. the different parts

  544. of the conversation.

  545. Let's talk about

  546. the promise

  547. of the Son first

  548. and then let's talk

  549. about the promise

  550. of the land next.

  551. But it's all

  552. kind of together

  553. in one.

  554. And it's,

  555. again,

  556. it's similar

  557. to what's happened

  558. before.

  559. The Lord said,

  560. I am the Lord.

  561. I brought you

  562. out of Ur

  563. of the Chaldeans

  564. and the reason

  565. I brought you

  566. out of there.

  567. My intention

  568. right from the start

  569. was to give you

  570. this land

  571. so that you

  572. could possess it.

  573. And again,

  574. Abraham

  575. responds with this,

  576. I'm going to call it

  577. a mixture of

  578. faith and

  579. wrestling to have

  580. faith.

  581. He speaks

  582. respectfully,

  583. sovereign Lord,

  584. but then there's

  585. that question.

  586. how can I know

  587. that I will

  588. gain possession

  589. of it?

  590. I hear what

  591. you say,

  592. Lord,

  593. and I believe,

  594. but help me

  595. in my unbelief

  596. because when I look

  597. at the land

  598. right now,

  599. what do I see?

  600. It's full of people.

  601. It belongs

  602. to other people.

  603. They've laid

  604. claim to it.

  605. How will this

  606. happen?

  607. Give me assurance

  608. that you will

  609. do what you

  610. have promised.

  611. And the Lord,

  612. instead of

  613. saying,

  614. you shouldn't

  615. doubt me,

  616. just believe,

  617. what does the

  618. Lord do?

  619. He gives him

  620. assurance.

  621. Verse 9,

  622. so the Lord

  623. said to him,

  624. bring me a

  625. heifer,

  626. a goat,

  627. and a ram,

  628. each three years

  629. old,

  630. along with a

  631. dove and a

  632. young pigeon.

  633. Abram brought

  634. all these to

  635. him,

  636. cut them in

  637. two,

  638. and arranged

  639. the halves

  640. opposite each

  641. other.

  642. The birds,

  643. however,

  644. he did not

  645. cut in half.

  646. Then birds of

  647. prey came down

  648. on the carcasses,

  649. but Abram

  650. drove them

  651. away.

  652. We're going

  653. to skip down

  654. to verse 17.

  655. We'll come

  656. back to 12

  657. in a minute.

  658. Verse 17,

  659. when the sun

  660. had set and

  661. darkness had

  662. fallen,

  663. a smoking

  664. fire pot

  665. with a blazing

  666. torch appeared

  667. and passed

  668. between the

  669. pieces of

  670. the animals.

  671. And then

  672. Moses tells

  673. us what's

  674. happening here

  675. in verse 18.

  676. He says,

  677. on that day

  678. the Lord

  679. made a

  680. covenant

  681. with Abram.

  682. Now as we

  683. read that,

  684. it probably

  685. seems very

  686. strange to

  687. us.

  688. We don't

  689. do anything

  690. like that

  691. in our

  692. day.

  693. Kind of

  694. disgusting,

  695. taking these

  696. animals,

  697. cutting them

  698. up,

  699. and then

  700. walking through

  701. the pieces.

  702. I mean,

  703. what is that

  704. all about?

  705. Well,

  706. Abram

  707. asked for

  708. assurance.

  709. And so

  710. God is

  711. giving him

  712. assurance,

  713. but he's

  714. giving it to

  715. him according

  716. to the

  717. custom of

  718. the day.

  719. This is how

  720. they made

  721. covenants

  722. back in

  723. ancient times.

  724. animals.

  725. They would

  726. take some

  727. animals,

  728. maybe one

  729. or more,

  730. cut them

  731. in half,

  732. they put the

  733. pieces on

  734. either side,

  735. and then they

  736. would walk

  737. through the

  738. pieces.

  739. Back then,

  740. they wanted to

  741. have a way

  742. to say,

  743. you can trust

  744. that I will

  745. keep my

  746. word.

  747. And this

  748. was how

  749. they did

  750. it.

  751. And essentially

  752. what they were

  753. saying as they

  754. did that was,

  755. if I don't

  756. keep my

  757. word to

  758. you,

  759. then may

  760. what happened

  761. to these

  762. animals happen

  763. to me.

  764. It was

  765. essentially

  766. invoking a

  767. curse upon

  768. yourself,

  769. conditionally,

  770. if you fail

  771. to keep

  772. your word.

  773. If I don't

  774. keep my

  775. promise to

  776. you,

  777. may this

  778. happen to

  779. me.

  780. And this

  781. kind of

  782. interpretation

  783. of it is

  784. best seen

  785. in Jeremiah,

  786. and apparently

  787. it was still

  788. being practiced

  789. as late as

  790. then.

  791. If I don't

  792. do what

  793. I've said

  794. that I

  795. will do,

  796. may God

  797. bring the

  798. curse of

  799. death upon

  800. me.

  801. There's not

  802. really a

  803. nicer way

  804. to say

  805. it.

  806. It's a

  807. very grotesque

  808. kind of

  809. thing,

  810. but it's

  811. very rich

  812. in symbolism.

  813. And the

  814. Lord

  815. enters into

  816. this thing

  817. and does

  818. this thing

  819. in front

  820. of Abraham.

  821. Now,

  822. there's a

  823. couple

  824. things I

  825. want to

  826. say about

  827. this whole

  828. thing.

  829. The first

  830. is it

  831. was common

  832. for two

  833. people to

  834. walk through

  835. the pieces

  836. together,

  837. especially if

  838. they both

  839. had an

  840. end of the

  841. deal to

  842. keep up.

  843. They would

  844. both walk

  845. through,

  846. and then if

  847. one of us

  848. breaks it,

  849. then may

  850. this happen

  851. to us

  852. kind of

  853. thing.

  854. But here

  855. we see

  856. that it's

  857. just the

  858. Lord who

  859. passes between

  860. the pieces.

  861. And that

  862. happens in

  863. verse 17

  864. when it

  865. says Abraham

  866. saw a

  867. smoking fire

  868. pot and

  869. a flaming

  870. torch.

  871. And those

  872. things probably

  873. have a

  874. significance to

  875. this ritual

  876. back in the

  877. day that's

  878. probably lost

  879. on us

  880. today.

  881. But the

  882. sense is

  883. that the

  884. Lord chose

  885. to manifest

  886. himself,

  887. to reveal

  888. himself in

  889. this form.

  890. The invisible

  891. God showed

  892. himself in

  893. this way as

  894. a smoking

  895. fire pot and

  896. a flaming

  897. torch passing

  898. between the

  899. pieces.

  900. And Moses

  901. kind of

  902. confirms that

  903. in verse

  904. 18 where

  905. it says,

  906. on that

  907. day the

  908. Lord made

  909. a covenant

  910. with Abram.

  911. It was

  912. God himself

  913. who passed

  914. through the

  915. pieces.

  916. But Abraham

  917. didn't.

  918. And so

  919. this is

  920. signaling right

  921. here that

  922. these promises

  923. that I've

  924. made to you,

  925. I'm taking

  926. on myself

  927. the full

  928. weight of

  929. responsibility

  930. to see

  931. that they

  932. come to

  933. pass for

  934. you.

  935. There's

  936. no obligation

  937. for Abraham

  938. to do

  939. anything.

  940. Interesting.

  941. The second

  942. thing that I

  943. want to say

  944. about this

  945. ritual,

  946. did the

  947. Lord really

  948. have to do

  949. this for

  950. Abraham?

  951. Did going

  952. through this

  953. ancient human

  954. ritual and

  955. making a

  956. covenant like

  957. this make

  958. it any more

  959. sure that

  960. the Lord

  961. would keep

  962. the promises

  963. that he

  964. had made?

  965. My answer

  966. to that is

  967. no.

  968. The Lord

  969. intended to

  970. keep his

  971. promises when

  972. he made

  973. them and

  974. that was

  975. enough.

  976. And so

  977. in a sense

  978. we see

  979. here kind

  980. of the

  981. humble love

  982. of God,

  983. the kindness

  984. of God,

  985. that he

  986. is going

  987. to stoop

  988. down to

  989. Abraham's

  990. level and

  991. say it,

  992. demonstrate it

  993. in a way

  994. that Abraham

  995. understands,

  996. that is

  997. deeply

  998. meaningful to

  999. him as

  1000. he goes

  1001. through this

  1002. ancient ritual.

  1003. people.

  1004. This is

  1005. God's way

  1006. of saying

  1007. in Abraham's

  1008. language and

  1009. tradition,

  1010. I will

  1011. go to

  1012. the uttermost

  1013. lengths to

  1014. keep my

  1015. promise to

  1016. you.

  1017. Now I

  1018. don't want

  1019. to press

  1020. this beyond

  1021. what it's

  1022. meant to

  1023. say,

  1024. but some

  1025. people take

  1026. issue with

  1027. God kind

  1028. of going

  1029. through a

  1030. ceremony like

  1031. this.

  1032. It's kind

  1033. of a dark

  1034. ceremony,

  1035. cutting animals

  1036. and stuff.

  1037. Would God

  1038. really do

  1039. that?

  1040. Would he

  1041. invoke a

  1042. curse upon

  1043. himself,

  1044. a curse of

  1045. death?

  1046. That just

  1047. doesn't feel

  1048. good,

  1049. it doesn't

  1050. feel right.

  1051. But I

  1052. just can't

  1053. help but

  1054. see the

  1055. statement that

  1056. comes out

  1057. of this

  1058. kind of a

  1059. thing.

  1060. When you

  1061. went through

  1062. the pieces

  1063. of the

  1064. animal,

  1065. you were

  1066. essentially

  1067. saying,

  1068. may God's

  1069. curse,

  1070. the curse

  1071. of death

  1072. be upon

  1073. me if I

  1074. fail to

  1075. keep my

  1076. word to

  1077. you.

  1078. Would God

  1079. go that

  1080. far to

  1081. keep his

  1082. word,

  1083. to bless

  1084. Abraham,

  1085. to show

  1086. kindness to

  1087. Abraham?

  1088. I can't

  1089. help but

  1090. see and

  1091. think of

  1092. the words

  1093. of Paul

  1094. in Galatians

    Galatians 3:13

  1095. 3,

  1096. verse 13.

  1097. Christ

  1098. redeemed us

  1099. from the

  1100. curse of

  1101. the law.

  1102. How?

  1103. By

  1104. becoming

  1105. a curse

  1106. for us.

  1107. For it

  1108. is written,

  1109. cursed is

  1110. everyone who

  1111. is hung

  1112. on a

  1113. pole.

  1114. Not

  1115. only

  1116. would

  1117. God

  1118. say

  1119. may I

  1120. be

  1121. cursed

  1122. if I

  1123. fail to

  1124. keep my

  1125. word for

  1126. you,

  1127. but he

  1128. did

  1129. fall under

  1130. a curse.

  1131. Paul was

  1132. talking about

  1133. the Mosaic

  1134. law and the

  1135. curses that

  1136. were attached

  1137. to that,

  1138. so it's

  1139. somewhat

  1140. different in

  1141. its meaning,

  1142. but the

  1143. effect is

  1144. still the

  1145. same.

  1146. yes,

  1147. the Lord

  1148. is saying,

  1149. may I

  1150. go to

  1151. the

  1152. uttermost

  1153. lengths.

  1154. I will

  1155. suffer the

  1156. ultimate

  1157. cost to

  1158. keep my

  1159. promise to

  1160. you.

  1161. See that

  1162. picture of

  1163. Jesus hanging

  1164. on the

  1165. cross,

  1166. bearing the

  1167. curse,

  1168. the punishment

  1169. of sin that

  1170. we deserved.

  1171. yes,

  1172. I will

  1173. go to

  1174. that

  1175. length

  1176. if

  1177. necessary

  1178. to keep

  1179. my

  1180. promise to

  1181. you and

  1182. to bless

  1183. all the

  1184. families of

  1185. the earth.

  1186. I won't

  1187. let anything,

  1188. not even my

  1189. own justice,

  1190. stand in the

  1191. way of the

  1192. blessing that I

  1193. have promised.

  1194. there are

  1195. some people

  1196. that will

  1197. say to

  1198. you,

  1199. the God

  1200. of the

  1201. Old

  1202. Testament is

  1203. not the

  1204. same as

  1205. the God

  1206. of the

  1207. New

  1208. Testament or

  1209. Jesus that

  1210. we see in

  1211. the New

  1212. Testament.

  1213. But if you

  1214. really look

  1215. closely,

  1216. it's not

  1217. true.

  1218. We see

  1219. in this

  1220. dark,

  1221. ancient

  1222. covenant

  1223. ritual,

  1224. the same

  1225. kind of

  1226. humble,

  1227. stooped

  1228. down to

  1229. our level

  1230. love.

  1231. As we

  1232. see at

  1233. the cross,

  1234. as God

  1235. goes through

  1236. this dark

  1237. and horrific

  1238. moment,

  1239. Jesus carrying

  1240. this cross

  1241. up to

  1242. Calvary to

  1243. die as a

  1244. sacrifice for

  1245. the sins of

  1246. the world.

  1247. The God

  1248. of the Old

  1249. Testament is

  1250. the God of

  1251. the New

  1252. Testament.

  1253. We see

  1254. his humble

  1255. love and

  1256. grace just

  1257. the same.

  1258. second

  1259. thing I

  1260. want to

  1261. talk about

  1262. here,

  1263. I want to

  1264. be very

  1265. careful here

  1266. because there

  1267. are some

  1268. people out

  1269. there today

  1270. who have

  1271. kind of

  1272. got this,

  1273. I want to

  1274. call it

  1275. new,

  1276. it's probably

  1277. not,

  1278. but it's

  1279. very fresh,

  1280. I'm just

  1281. going to

  1282. call it

  1283. what it

  1284. is,

  1285. false

  1286. teaching,

  1287. in which

  1288. they're saying

  1289. things like,

  1290. look,

  1291. see,

  1292. see what

  1293. Abraham,

  1294. what God

  1295. did for

  1296. Abraham here?

  1297. He didn't

  1298. actually endorse

  1299. the cutting of

  1300. the animals into

  1301. pieces and all

  1302. that stuff,

  1303. he just,

  1304. he just did it

  1305. that way to

  1306. demonstrate that

  1307. in a language

  1308. that Abraham

  1309. would understand.

  1310. there's not

  1311. really any

  1312. significance to

  1313. this ancient

  1314. ritual beyond

  1315. the symbolism.

  1316. In the same

  1317. way,

  1318. there's not

  1319. really any

  1320. significance to

  1321. the cross beyond

  1322. the symbolism.

  1323. It's just God

  1324. saying,

  1325. I love you,

  1326. in a way that

  1327. our primitive

  1328. ancestors,

  1329. our barbaric

  1330. ancestors could

  1331. understand.

  1332. there's nothing,

  1333. this is

  1334. absolutely,

  1335. it's deadly,

  1336. is what it

  1337. is.

  1338. It's stripping

  1339. the cross of

  1340. its power.

  1341. It's a very

  1342. dangerous way

  1343. of looking

  1344. at the

  1345. scripture.

  1346. Just because

  1347. this human

  1348. covenant,

  1349. this covenant

  1350. was a human

  1351. covenant,

  1352. doesn't mean

  1353. that God

  1354. didn't actually

  1355. do it and

  1356. mean it,

  1357. that the

  1358. covenant

  1359. wasn't

  1360. somehow

  1361. significant.

  1362. Yes,

  1363. it was.

  1364. God put

  1365. himself into

  1366. an ancient

  1367. human tradition

  1368. and bound

  1369. himself there

  1370. in a real

  1371. sense so

  1372. that for

  1373. generations to

  1374. come,

  1375. people could

  1376. look back on

  1377. that and

  1378. say,

  1379. yes,

  1380. God will

  1381. keep his

  1382. word.

  1383. We might

  1384. find it

  1385. disgusting

  1386. that the

  1387. animals were

  1388. cut in two,

  1389. but the

  1390. Lord wasn't

  1391. just doing

  1392. this to

  1393. pretend,

  1394. to give

  1395. Abraham a

  1396. sense of

  1397. who he is,

  1398. the right

  1399. idea,

  1400. even though I

  1401. completely

  1402. disagree with

  1403. this whole

  1404. ritual here.

  1405. It's gross.

  1406. It's disgusting.

  1407. No,

  1408. this covenant

  1409. that God

  1410. made with

  1411. Abraham,

  1412. even though

  1413. it was a

  1414. human custom,

  1415. it was real

  1416. and it was

  1417. binding.

  1418. if the

  1419. Lord does

  1420. something that

  1421. we do,

  1422. he does it

  1423. in the way

  1424. that we

  1425. should do

  1426. it,

  1427. which in

  1428. this case,

  1429. in a covenant

  1430. ceremony,

  1431. means that he

  1432. fully intends

  1433. to keep his

  1434. word and to

  1435. be bound in

  1436. that moment

  1437. in history by

  1438. what he said

  1439. he would do.

  1440. Just because

  1441. it's a human

  1442. tradition,

  1443. a human custom

  1444. doesn't make

  1445. it less

  1446. significant that

  1447. God did it.

  1448. the fact that

  1449. God entered

  1450. into this

  1451. human tradition

  1452. and custom

  1453. and made

  1454. this covenant

  1455. in this way

  1456. infuses it

  1457. with meaning.

  1458. It takes

  1459. what is earthly

  1460. and it

  1461. makes it

  1462. glorious.

  1463. It redeems

  1464. it.

  1465. It purifies

  1466. it.

  1467. It increases

  1468. the significance

  1469. of it beyond

  1470. what it would

  1471. have meant

  1472. to just two

  1473. people doing

  1474. it.

  1475. For the rest

  1476. of eternity,

  1477. we're going

  1478. to look

  1479. back on

  1480. this moment

  1481. and say,

  1482. yes,

  1483. Lord,

  1484. you made

  1485. a covenant

  1486. and you've

  1487. kept the

  1488. promise.

  1489. That covenant

  1490. was made

  1491. when he walked

  1492. through the

  1493. bloody pieces

  1494. of animals

  1495. and for the

  1496. rest of eternity,

  1497. we're going to

  1498. look back in the

  1499. same way on

  1500. the cross.

  1501. God

  1502. and

  1503. yes,

  1504. it actually

  1505. did something.

  1506. It had

  1507. real weight

  1508. and significance.

  1509. It wasn't

  1510. just a show

  1511. to communicate

  1512. the right idea.

  1513. It really

  1514. did something.

  1515. It secured

  1516. forgiveness

  1517. for us

  1518. of our sins

  1519. as horrific

  1520. and barbaric

  1521. as it was.

  1522. we should

  1523. sing.

  1524. We should

  1525. wonder that

  1526. God would

  1527. humble himself

  1528. and bring

  1529. his glorious

  1530. perfection

  1531. down into

  1532. our world,

  1533. down into

  1534. a human body

  1535. in the person

  1536. of Christ,

  1537. down into

  1538. some of our

  1539. customs and

  1540. traditions and

  1541. lift those

  1542. things up

  1543. and make

  1544. them glorious

  1545. and serve

  1546. his purposes.

  1547. This is the

  1548. covenant

  1549. ceremony.

  1550. In the midst

  1551. of all this,

  1552. we skipped

  1553. over a few

  1554. verses.

  1555. God gives

  1556. Abraham assurance

  1557. in a different

  1558. way.

  1559. The covenant

  1560. ceremony,

  1561. that's the

  1562. tangible thing.

  1563. That's the

  1564. thing that he

  1565. can see with

  1566. his eyes.

  1567. But God

  1568. also gives

  1569. him a few

  1570. more words,

  1571. a bit of

  1572. an explanation

  1573. as to how

  1574. these promises

  1575. will be

  1576. kept to

  1577. help him,

  1578. to give him

  1579. assurance.

  1580. So what

  1581. does he

  1582. say?

  1583. Verse 12,

  1584. As the sun

  1585. was setting,

  1586. Abram fell

  1587. into a deep

  1588. sleep,

  1589. and a thick

  1590. and dreadful

  1591. darkness came

  1592. over him.

  1593. Then the

  1594. Lord said

  1595. to him,

  1596. Know for

  1597. certain that

  1598. for 400

  1599. years,

  1600. for 400

  1601. years,

  1602. your descendants

  1603. will be

  1604. strangers in

  1605. a country

  1606. not their

  1607. own,

  1608. and that

  1609. they will

  1610. be enslaved

  1611. and mistreated

  1612. there.

  1613. But I will

  1614. punish the

  1615. nation they

  1616. serve as

  1617. slaves,

  1618. and afterward

  1619. they will

  1620. come out

  1621. with great

  1622. possessions.

  1623. You,

  1624. however,

  1625. will go to

  1626. your ancestors

  1627. in peace

  1628. and be

  1629. buried at a

  1630. good old

  1631. age.

  1632. In the

  1633. fourth

  1634. generation,

  1635. your

  1636. descendants

  1637. will come

  1638. back here,

  1639. for the

  1640. sin of the

  1641. Amorites

  1642. has not

  1643. yet reached

  1644. its full

  1645. measure.

  1646. So not

  1647. only does

  1648. God give

  1649. assurance

  1650. visibly and

  1651. tangibly through

  1652. the covenant

  1653. ceremony,

  1654. but he actually

  1655. gives an

  1656. explanation to

  1657. assure Abraham

  1658. of how things

  1659. are going to

  1660. unfold.

  1661. And this is

  1662. new.

  1663. This is

  1664. something Abraham

  1665. hasn't heard

  1666. yet.

  1667. Abraham's

  1668. received all

  1669. these great

  1670. promises,

  1671. promises,

  1672. and now

  1673. the Lord

  1674. gives some

  1675. clarity.

  1676. These promises

  1677. will come

  1678. true.

  1679. I will see

  1680. to it,

  1681. Abraham,

  1682. but it's

  1683. not maybe

  1684. how you

  1685. expected it

  1686. to go.

  1687. I mean,

  1688. Abraham's

  1689. got to have

  1690. been wondering,

  1691. do I just

  1692. pitch my tent

  1693. here and do

  1694. we just keep

  1695. growing and

  1696. growing and

  1697. eventually,

  1698. what, the

  1699. people that are

  1700. already here

  1701. just are going

  1702. to leave?

  1703. How will

  1704. this happen?

  1705. The Lord

  1706. gives some

  1707. clarity.

  1708. It's not

  1709. going to be

  1710. right away.

  1711. It's actually

  1712. going to be

  1713. 400 years

  1714. from now.

  1715. Four generations

  1716. from now.

  1717. And it's not

  1718. going to be

  1719. the way that

  1720. maybe Abraham

  1721. expected.

  1722. It's actually

  1723. going to involve

  1724. your descendants

  1725. going to

  1726. another country

  1727. where they're

  1728. going to be

  1729. mistreated

  1730. and oppressed

  1731. and enslaved.

  1732. Don't worry,

  1733. I'm not

  1734. going to let

  1735. the country

  1736. that does

  1737. that to

  1738. them get

  1739. away with

  1740. it.

  1741. Absolutely

  1742. not.

  1743. Justice will

  1744. be done.

  1745. But it's

  1746. not until

  1747. 400 years

  1748. from now

  1749. when they

  1750. come out

  1751. that your

  1752. descendants

  1753. will truly

  1754. in a fuller

  1755. sense possess

  1756. this land.

  1757. Why?

  1758. Why this

  1759. way?

  1760. There's only

  1761. one reason

  1762. given in

  1763. this passage.

  1764. church.

  1765. There's

  1766. probably more

  1767. reasons that

  1768. the Lord

  1769. has.

  1770. One of the

  1771. reasons in

  1772. verse 16,

  1773. for the sin

  1774. of the Amorites

  1775. has not yet

  1776. reached its

  1777. full measure.

  1778. Well, that's

  1779. interesting.

  1780. I'm going to

  1781. give this land

  1782. to you,

  1783. Abraham.

  1784. I'm going to

  1785. give it to

  1786. your descendants,

  1787. but if you're

  1788. to just go

  1789. around and

  1790. start killing

  1791. people here

  1792. and taking

  1793. the land

  1794. from them,

  1795. that would

  1796. not be

  1797. right.

  1798. The Lord

  1799. is just.

  1800. He is the

  1801. judge.

  1802. He sees that

  1803. the punishment

  1804. fits the

  1805. crime and

  1806. they're not

  1807. going to be

  1808. worthy of a

  1809. punishment,

  1810. deserving of a

  1811. punishment like

  1812. is going to

  1813. happen when

  1814. you come back

  1815. in and conquer

  1816. the land 400

  1817. years from now

  1818. for another

  1819. 400 years.

  1820. Even here,

  1821. we see the

  1822. Lord's mercy

  1823. and grace.

  1824. They're

  1825. sinners, yes.

  1826. They deserve

  1827. the same as

  1828. all of us,

  1829. yes.

  1830. But it

  1831. wouldn't be

  1832. right for you

  1833. to just take

  1834. this land

  1835. from them

  1836. now.

  1837. The Lord

  1838. is working

  1839. to ensure

  1840. that justice

  1841. is done

  1842. in the grand

  1843. scheme of

  1844. things.

  1845. He's not

  1846. just going

  1847. to take

  1848. this land

  1849. and give

  1850. it because

  1851. he doesn't

  1852. care about

  1853. these people.

  1854. He cares

  1855. about them.

  1856. And they

  1857. will have

  1858. time in

  1859. the

  1860. meantime

  1861. to listen

  1862. to Abraham,

  1863. the Lord's

  1864. prophet who

  1865. is among

  1866. them,

  1867. speak of

  1868. the Lord.

  1869. They will

  1870. have time

  1871. to see

  1872. him worship

  1873. the Lord

  1874. and hopefully

  1875. respond to

  1876. and repent

  1877. and believe

  1878. in him.

  1879. So things

  1880. have come

  1881. clearer for

  1882. Abraham.

  1883. The Lord

  1884. has given

  1885. him great

  1886. promises.

  1887. he has

  1888. done his

  1889. best to

  1890. believe

  1891. and yet

  1892. he has

  1893. struggled

  1894. to believe

  1895. at moments

  1896. and he

  1897. asked the

  1898. Lord for

  1899. assurance

  1900. and God

  1901. gives it

  1902. to him.

  1903. He gives

  1904. it to him

  1905. in very

  1906. powerful

  1907. and tangible

  1908. and real

  1909. ways

  1910. and even

  1911. yet

  1912. with all

  1913. this that

  1914. he's now

  1915. heard from

  1916. the Lord

  1917. there's still

  1918. so much

  1919. unknown.

  1920. and yet

  1921. Abraham

  1922. believes

  1923. the Lord.

  1924. That's the

  1925. way we're

  1926. meant to

  1927. take verse

  1928. six.

  1929. Now Abraham

  1930. had believed

  1931. in response

  1932. to all of

  1933. this.

  1934. He trusted

  1935. that the

  1936. Lord would

  1937. do this

  1938. and maybe

  1939. now he

  1940. holds these

  1941. promises with

  1942. a little bit

  1943. more of an

  1944. open hand

  1945. to let God

  1946. be God,

  1947. to let God

  1948. direct the

  1949. story according

  1950. to what is

  1951. truly best.

  1952. it doesn't

  1953. always go

  1954. the way

  1955. that we

  1956. expect

  1957. or hope.

  1958. Abraham

  1959. believed

  1960. the Lord

  1961. and the

  1962. Lord

  1963. credited

  1964. it to

  1965. him

  1966. as

  1967. righteousness.

  1968. This is

  1969. one of the

  1970. most profound

  1971. amazing

  1972. statements

  1973. in the

  1974. whole book

  1975. of Genesis.

  1976. Abraham

  1977. responded

  1978. to God

  1979. with faith

  1980. that was

  1981. kind of

  1982. par for

  1983. the course

  1984. for him

  1985. and what

  1986. did God

  1987. do?

  1988. He credited

  1989. that to

  1990. him as

  1991. righteousness.

  1992. Think about

  1993. that.

  1994. If you

  1995. credit

  1996. something to

  1997. someone

  1998. it's because

  1999. they don't

  2000. have it

  2001. already.

  2002. Implied in

  2003. these words

  2004. is that

  2005. Abraham

  2006. is not

  2007. righteous.

  2008. righteous.

  2009. He is

  2010. not

  2011. right

  2012. with

  2013. God

  2014. just

  2015. like

  2016. the

  2017. rest

  2018. of

  2019. us.

  2020. Just like

  2021. the rest

  2022. of the

  2023. people

  2024. in this

  2025. larger

  2026. story

  2027. of the

  2028. world.

  2029. And yet

  2030. God

  2031. is giving

  2032. him

  2033. something

  2034. he doesn't

  2035. have,

  2036. a right

  2037. standing

  2038. with

  2039. him.

  2040. He's

  2041. treating

  2042. him

  2043. as

  2044. though

  2045. he

  2046. is

  2047. right

  2048. with

  2049. himself.

  2050. not

  2051. because

  2052. he

  2053. is,

  2054. but

  2055. simply

  2056. because

  2057. he

  2058. believed.

  2059. What

  2060. is going

  2061. on here?

  2062. What

  2063. about

  2064. divine

  2065. justice?

  2066. This

  2067. is

  2068. certainly

  2069. wonderful

  2070. for

  2071. Abraham,

  2072. an

  2073. incredible

  2074. mercy

  2075. and

  2076. gift.

  2077. Those

  2078. are

  2079. questions

  2080. that

  2081. we're

  2082. going

  2083. to

  2084. get

  2085. to

  2086. in

  2087. October

  2088. when

  2089. we

  2090. flip

  2091. to

  2092. the

  2093. other

  2094. side

  2095. and

  2096. go

  2097. to

  2098. Romans

  2099. and

  2100. look

  2101. at

  2102. what

  2103. Paul

  2104. had

  2105. to

  2106. say

  2107. based

  2108. on

  2109. this

  2110. to

  2111. the

  2112. church

  2113. at

  2114. Rome.

  2115. And so

  2116. where do

  2117. we find

  2118. Abraham

  2119. at the

  2120. end of

  2121. all

  2122. this?

  2123. We

  2124. find

  2125. him

  2126. lying

  2127. in the

  2128. field

  2129. at

  2130. night

  2131. looking

  2132. up

  2133. into

  2134. the

  2135. sky

  2136. and

  2137. counting.

  2138. He

  2139. believed.

  2140. He

  2141. took

  2142. the

  2143. Lord's

  2144. word

  2145. seriously

  2146. and

  2147. so

  2148. there

  2149. he

  2150. is

  2151. counting

  2152. and

  2153. then

  2154. he

  2155. loses

  2156. count

  2157. and

  2158. he

  2159. starts

  2160. again

  2161. and

  2162. then

  2163. he

  2164. loses

  2165. count

  2166. again

  2167. and

  2168. he

  2169. starts

  2170. again

  2171. and

  2172. then

  2173. he

  2174. comes

  2175. back

  2176. a week

  2177. later

  2178. and

  2179. realizes

  2180. that

  2181. the

  2182. moon

  2183. was

  2184. up

  2185. and

  2186. now

  2187. that

  2188. it's

  2189. down

  2190. there's

  2191. even

  2192. more

  2193. stars

  2194. than

  2195. there

  2196. were

  2197. before

  2198. and

  2199. he

  2200. starts

  2201. again

  2202. and

  2203. then

  2204. he

  2205. comes

  2206. back

  2207. in

  2208. three

  2209. months

  2210. and

  2211. realizes

  2212. that

  2213. there's

  2214. a

  2215. whole

  2216. new

  2217. set

  2218. of

  2219. stars

  2220. and

  2221. he

  2222. starts

  2223. again

  2224. and

  2225. when

  2226. he

  2227. finally

  2228. gets

  2229. tired

  2230. of

  2231. trying

  2232. to

  2233. do

  2234. what

  2235. he

  2236. just

  2237. simply

  2238. can't

  2239. is

  2240. that

  2241. one

  2242. star

  2243. two

  2244. three

  2245. is

  2246. that

  2247. whole

  2248. galaxy

  2249. he

  2250. closes

  2251. his

  2252. eyes

  2253. and

  2254. he

  2255. thinks

  2256. to

  2257. that

  2258. moment

  2259. where

  2260. he

  2261. saw

  2262. the

  2263. smoking

  2264. fire

  2265. pot

  2266. and

  2267. the

  2268. blazing

  2269. torch

  2270. passing

  2271. through

  2272. the

  2273. pieces

  2274. Abraham

  2275. believed

  2276. he

  2277. took

  2278. the

  2279. Lord

  2280. seriously

  2281. and

  2282. he's

  2283. waiting

  2284. to

  2285. see

  2286. how

  2287. God

  2288. will

  2289. work

  2290. all

  2291. of

  2292. this

  2293. according

  2294. to

  2295. his

  2296. plan

  2297. and

  2298. promise

  2299. so

  2300. what

  2301. can

  2302. we

  2303. take

  2304. from

  2305. this

  2306. what

  2307. do

  2308. we

  2309. take

  2310. for

  2311. us

  2312. today

  2313. from

  2314. this

  2315. if

  2316. Abraham

  2317. were

  2318. sitting

  2319. right

  2320. here

  2321. with

  2322. us

  2323. today

  2324. I

  2325. have

  2326. a

  2327. feeling

  2328. that

  2329. the

  2330. first

  2331. thing

  2332. he

  2333. would

  2334. say

  2335. is

  2336. don't

  2337. look

  2338. at

  2339. me

  2340. in

  2341. this

  2342. story

  2343. I'm

  2344. nothing

  2345. look

  2346. at

  2347. the

  2348. Lord

  2349. look

  2350. at

  2351. what

  2352. he

  2353. did

  2354. to

  2355. me

  2356. look

  2357. at

  2358. what

  2359. he

  2360. said

  2361. to

  2362. me

  2363. look

  2364. at

  2365. his

  2366. kindness

  2367. look

  2368. at

  2369. how

  2370. he

  2371. treated

  2372. me

  2373. even

  2374. though

  2375. I

  2376. didn't

  2377. deserve

  2378. it

  2379. look

  2380. at

  2381. how

  2382. he

  2383. responded

  2384. to

  2385. my

  2386. doubt

  2387. and

  2388. struggle

  2389. to

  2390. believe

  2391. so

  2392. graciously

  2393. so

  2394. humbly

  2395. giving

  2396. me

  2397. assurance

  2398. in a

  2399. way

  2400. that

  2401. meant

  2402. the

  2403. world

  2404. to

  2405. me

  2406. look

  2407. at

  2408. his

  2409. kindness

  2410. look

  2411. at

  2412. his

  2413. goodness

  2414. look

  2415. at

  2416. his

  2417. justice

  2418. even

  2419. towards

  2420. the

  2421. Amorites

  2422. don't

  2423. look

  2424. at

  2425. me

  2426. I'm

  2427. nothing

  2428. see

  2429. the

  2430. glory

  2431. of

  2432. the

  2433. Lord

  2434. here

  2435. is

  2436. what

  2437. I

  2438. imagine

  2439. Abraham

  2440. would

  2441. say

  2442. if

  2443. he

  2444. were

  2445. here

  2446. with

  2447. us

  2448. this

  2449. morning

  2450. worship

  2451. his

  2452. name

  2453. the

  2454. true

  2455. treasure

  2456. in this

  2457. story

  2458. the

  2459. true

  2460. reward

  2461. is

  2462. not

  2463. what

  2464. he

  2465. said

  2466. he

  2467. would

  2468. give

  2469. it's

  2470. him

  2471. it's

  2472. this

  2473. relationship

  2474. that I

  2475. have

  2476. with

  2477. him

  2478. and all

  2479. of this

  2480. comes in

  2481. the

  2482. midst

  2483. of

  2484. Abraham's

  2485. seemingly

  2486. mixed

  2487. feelings

  2488. we

  2489. too

  2490. wrestle

  2491. with

  2492. faith

  2493. with

  2494. believing

  2495. at

  2496. times

  2497. just

  2498. like

  2499. he

  2500. did

  2501. we

  2502. live

  2503. often

  2504. in that

  2505. place

  2506. of

  2507. I

  2508. believe

  2509. Lord

  2510. but

  2511. there's

  2512. unbelief

  2513. there

  2514. too

  2515. there's

  2516. doubt

  2517. and we

  2518. see from

  2519. Abraham

  2520. that we

  2521. can bring

  2522. those

  2523. doubts

  2524. to the

  2525. Lord

  2526. we can

  2527. speak to

  2528. him honestly

  2529. about what's

  2530. going on in

  2531. our lives

  2532. we should

  2533. do so

  2534. respectfully

  2535. as he

  2536. did

  2537. and humbly

  2538. and he

  2539. is the

  2540. kind of

  2541. God

  2542. that is

  2543. gracious

  2544. towards us

  2545. and will

  2546. give us

  2547. assurance

  2548. is there

  2549. something in

  2550. here that

  2551. doesn't sit

  2552. right with

  2553. you

  2554. ask him

  2555. about it

  2556. he will

  2557. give us

  2558. assurance

  2559. he's the

  2560. kind of

  2561. God that

  2562. gives his

  2563. promise

  2564. and then

  2565. gives the

  2566. same

  2567. promise

  2568. again

  2569. and then

  2570. gives it

  2571. again

  2572. and gives

  2573. it again

  2574. he knows

  2575. the kind

  2576. of people

  2577. that we

  2578. are

  2579. he knows

  2580. the way

  2581. we

  2582. struggle

  2583. he opens

  2584. our eyes

  2585. just a little

  2586. bit more

  2587. at a time

  2588. and leads

  2589. us along

  2590. in this

  2591. amazing

  2592. relationship

  2593. of love

  2594. what a

  2595. wonderful

  2596. God

  2597. he is

  2598. let's

  2599. pray

  2600. Lord we

  2601. don't come

  2602. to you

  2603. with

  2604. something in

  2605. our hands

  2606. to say

  2607. look at

  2608. how awesome

  2609. we are

  2610. what we

  2611. have to

  2612. give to

  2613. you

  2614. we come

  2615. to you

  2616. like

  2617. Abraham

  2618. did

  2619. so often

  2620. with

  2621. mixed

  2622. feelings

  2623. with doubt

  2624. with some

  2625. faith

  2626. yes

  2627. but you're

  2628. so gracious

  2629. to us

  2630. and we

  2631. praise you

  2632. for that

  2633. we love

  2634. you

  2635. we ask

  2636. that you

  2637. would strengthen

  2638. our faith

  2639. that you

  2640. would teach

  2641. us to walk

  2642. by faith

  2643. like Abraham

  2644. did

  2645. and to

  2646. take your

  2647. word

  2648. as the

  2649. truth

  2650. and live

  2651. by it

  2652. we thank

  2653. you that

  2654. through Christ

  2655. you have

  2656. not treated

  2657. us as we

  2658. deserve

  2659. not Abraham

  2660. and not us

  2661. you've instead

  2662. been gracious

  2663. and given

  2664. your blessing

  2665. to us

  2666. thank you

  2667. it's in

  2668. Jesus name

  2669. that we

  2670. pray

  2671. amen

  2672. to

  2673. hope

  2674. thank you
