  1. Well, I'm not much of a baseball player.

  2. I know Byron is.

  3. But from my few moments where I have had the opportunity to play,

  4. I know that if there's one thing that you don't want,

  5. it's for the pitcher to throw a curveball when you're up to bat.

  6. You want that ball to just come straight across the plate

  7. so you can just get a clean hit.

  8. But you don't want to see what some of us have seen at the last moment

  9. as it begins to all of a sudden change direction

  10. and go somewhere that you didn't expect it to.

  11. Even if you haven't played baseball, maybe you've had that moment

  12. or experienced that before.

  13. A ball's coming towards you or a frisbee or something,

  14. and you think you know where it's going to go,

  15. and then all of a sudden at the last minute,

  16. it just totally curves and goes way off

  17. from where you thought it would go.

  18. Well, curveballs are not just things that we see in the fields.

  19. Oftentimes, those kind of moments happen to us in life,

  20. whether in the big story picture of our lives

  21. or in the details of a given day.

  22. Things are going well,

  23. or at least we're at peace with the troubles in our lives,

  24. and then seemingly out of nowhere,

  25. something happens.

  26. Something perhaps unexpected or unplanned for.

  27. Something that maybe leads us to the place

  28. where we're asking the question,

  29. God, why?

  30. Why this?

  31. Why now?

  32. God has a way of bringing curveballs into our life,

  33. whether we like it or not.

  34. How do we handle those situations?

  35. What do we do in those moments?

  36. How do we hit a home run

  37. when a curveball comes at us?

  38. If you have your Bible with you,

  39. please open it to Genesis chapter 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  40. This morning, we're going to be looking at a time

  41. when Abraham had the craziest curveball,

  42. probably that anyone has experienced,

  43. brought his way.

  44. Genesis chapter 22,

    Genesis 22:1

  45. verse 1.

  46. Sometime later,

  47. God tested Abraham.

  48. He said to him,

  49. Abraham,

  50. Here I am,

  51. he replied.

  52. Then God said,

  53. Take your son,

  54. your only son,

  55. whom you love,

  56. Isaac,

  57. and go to the region of Moriah.

  58. Sacrifice him there

  59. as a burnt offering

  60. on a mountain

  61. I will show you.

  62. So here Abraham is,

  63. he's,

  64. we've been working through his story

  65. here together as a church.

  66. Things have been going well for him.

  67. God has blessed him.

  68. God has protected him.

  69. God has turned all these things

  70. that have gone wrong

  71. into blessings.

  72. It's gone well.

  73. The promised son,

  74. Isaac,

  75. has been born.

  76. And then seemingly

  77. out of nowhere,

  78. God gives Abraham

  79. this command.

  80. I want you to go

  81. to the region of Moriah,

  82. take your son,

  83. whom you love,

  84. and sacrifice him to me

  85. there

  86. as a burnt offering.

  87. Why would God

  88. ask Abraham

  89. to do such a thing?

  90. Why would he do that?

  91. Even the thought of it

  92. is deeply upsetting

  93. to us.

  94. Can you imagine

  95. how Abraham

  96. would have felt?

  97. God,

  98. why?

  99. you want me

  100. to offer

  101. my own son

  102. as a sacrifice?

  103. You want me

  104. to kill

  105. my own son?

  106. Why?

  107. God gives us

  108. only one clue

  109. as to why

  110. in verse 1.

  111. It says,

  112. sometime later,

  113. God tested Abraham.

  114. This was a test.

  115. He was testing

  116. Abraham.

  117. But Abraham

  118. didn't know

  119. that it was a test.

  120. And again,

  121. we might wonder,

  122. well,

  123. why would God

  124. do something

  125. like this?

  126. Something so

  127. horrible,

  128. asking him

  129. to kill

  130. his own son?

  131. And if that's

  132. how we think

  133. about it

  134. and feel about it,

  135. then think

  136. and feel

  137. how much more

  138. Abraham would have

  139. thought and felt

  140. that

  141. and wrestled

  142. and struggled

  143. with this command

  144. in that moment.

  145. God acknowledges

  146. how difficult

  147. this is going

  148. to be.

  149. Do you see

  150. how he describes

  151. Isaac in verse 2?

  152. He says,

  153. your only son.

  154. Of course,

  155. Ishmael has been

  156. sent away

  157. and Isaac

  158. is all that's left.

  159. Not only

  160. your only son,

  161. but your only son

  162. whom you love.

  163. how could God

  164. ask this?

  165. We can only

  166. imagine how

  167. perplexed

  168. and confused

  169. Abraham must have

  170. felt at this moment.

  171. I mean,

  172. was it not

  173. the Lord

  174. that told me

  175. that

  176. Sarah would

  177. bear a son

  178. and that

  179. he was to

  180. inherit

  181. the promises

  182. of this covenant

  183. as an everlasting

  184. covenant?

  185. Was it not

  186. you,

  187. Lord,

  188. who told me

  189. that it is

  190. through Isaac

  191. that my offspring

  192. shall be reckoned

  193. and now you're

  194. asking me

  195. to do this?

  196. That doesn't

  197. make sense.

  198. Abraham has

  199. a curveball

  200. thrown at him

  201. from God.

  202. How does

  203. Abraham respond?

  204. Verse 3.

  205. Early the next

  206. morning,

  207. Abraham got up

  208. and loaded

  209. his donkey.

  210. He took with him

  211. two of his servants

  212. and his son Isaac.

  213. When he had cut

  214. enough wood

  215. for the burnt

  216. offering,

  217. he set out

  218. for the place

  219. God had told him

  220. about.

  221. On the third day,

  222. Abraham looked up

  223. and saw the place

  224. in the distance.

  225. He said to his

  226. servants,

  227. stay here

  228. with the donkey

  229. while I

  230. and the boy

  231. go over there.

  232. We will worship

  233. and then we

  234. will come back

  235. to you.

  236. The first thing

  237. we notice

  238. about Abraham's

  239. response is

  240. just how quickly

  241. he gets to

  242. obeying

  243. the Lord's command.

  244. Did you see that

  245. in verse 3?

  246. The next morning,

  247. Abraham got up

  248. and began to make

  249. preparations.

  250. And not just

  251. the next morning,

  252. but early

  253. the next morning.

  254. there was no

  255. delay

  256. in Abraham's

  257. obedience.

  258. But can you

  259. imagine how

  260. he must have

  261. felt

  262. as there he

  263. is cutting

  264. the wood,

  265. knowing what

  266. the wood

  267. is going to

  268. be used for?

  269. can you imagine

  270. how he must

  271. have been

  272. feeling as

  273. for two

  274. days they

  275. walked together,

  276. he and his

  277. son Isaac,

  278. all the while

  279. Abraham knowing

  280. what was

  281. coming.

  282. Can you imagine

  283. how what must

  284. have been going

  285. on in Abraham's

  286. heart as he

  287. finally looked up

  288. on the third

  289. day and saw

  290. the place

  291. where this was

  292. all to happen?

  293. But there's

  294. this interesting

  295. thing that

  296. Abraham says

  297. when it

  298. comes to the

  299. moment to

  300. leave the

  301. servants behind

  302. and for

  303. Abraham and

  304. Isaac to

  305. go up the

  306. hill where

  307. the sacrifice

  308. is to be

  309. offered,

  310. he says

  311. this,

  312. he says

  313. to the

  314. servants,

  315. stay here

  316. with the

  317. donkey while

  318. I and the

  319. boy go

  320. over there.

  321. We will

  322. worship and

  323. then we

  324. will come

  325. back to

  326. you.

  327. Well,

  328. what do

  329. you mean

  330. Abraham?

  331. What do

  332. you mean

  333. we will

  334. come back

  335. to you?

  336. Why did

  337. he say

  338. that?

  339. Was he

  340. trying to

  341. hide from

  342. Isaac what

  343. was about

  344. to happen?

  345. Was this

  346. kind of a

  347. lie?

  348. Or did

  349. Abraham

  350. expect or

  351. hope that

  352. somehow this

  353. wasn't going

  354. to happen?

  355. God wasn't

  356. going to

  357. have him

  358. kill his

  359. own son.

  360. Abraham

  361. and Isaac

  362. continue

  363. on.

  364. Verse 6,

  365. Abraham took

  366. the wood for

  367. the burnt

  368. offering and

  369. placed it on

  370. his son

  371. Isaac and

  372. he himself

  373. carried the

  374. fire and

  375. the knife.

  376. As the two

  377. of them went

  378. on together,

  379. Isaac spoke

  380. up and

  381. said to

  382. his father

  383. Abraham,

  384. Father,

  385. yes,

  386. my son,

  387. Abraham

  388. replied,

  389. the fire

  390. and the

  391. wood are

  392. here,

  393. Isaac said,

  394. but where's

  395. the lamb

  396. for the

  397. burnt

  398. offering?

  399. This must

  400. have been a

  401. heart-wrenching

  402. moment for

  403. Abraham.

  404. Dad,

  405. the fire

  406. and the

  407. wood are

  408. here,

  409. where's the

  410. lamb for

  411. the sacrifice?

  412. Can you

  413. imagine that

  414. moment?

  415. Think of

  416. those of you

  417. who have

  418. kids,

  419. think if

  420. you were

  421. in that

  422. situation

  423. and it

  424. was your

  425. own

  426. child

  427. who

  428. looked at

  429. you and

  430. said,

  431. Dad,

  432. where's the

  433. lamb?

  434. What would

  435. you say?

  436. This is what

  437. Abraham said.

  438. Abraham

  439. answered,

  440. God

  441. himself will

  442. provide the

  443. lamb for

  444. the sacrifice,

  445. my son.

  446. Again,

  447. we're

  448. wondering,

  449. just what

  450. did he

  451. mean by

  452. that?

  453. One

  454. commentator

  455. said,

  456. you know,

  457. what is

  458. this?

  459. Is this a

  460. masterpiece of

  461. pious evasion?

  462. doesn't seem

  463. to really be

  464. answering the

  465. question.

  466. Or is this

  467. a statement

  468. of faith?

  469. God's going

  470. to look

  471. after it.

  472. He's going

  473. to take

  474. care of

  475. it.

  476. He's going

  477. to provide

  478. the lamb.

  479. Thankfully,

  480. we know

  481. the answer.

  482. In the

  483. inspired

  484. commentary

  485. of the

  486. author of

  487. Hebrews,

  488. thousands

  489. of years

  490. later,

  491. the author

  492. of Hebrews

  493. tells us

  494. that this

  495. was a

  496. moment in

  497. which Abraham

  498. displayed

  499. great faith

  500. in God.

  501. This was

  502. a statement

  503. of faith.

  504. God

  505. himself

  506. will provide

  507. the lamb

  508. for the

  509. sacrifice,

  510. my son.

  511. That word

  512. provide is

  513. literally

  514. see.

  515. God will

  516. see.

  517. One

  518. commentator

  519. I think

  520. captures it

  521. really well.

  522. God will

  523. see to

  524. it

  525. the lamb

  526. for the

  527. sacrifice.

  528. my son.

  529. Does

  530. Abraham

  531. know how

  532. this is

  533. going to

  534. work out?

  535. I don't

  536. think so.

  537. And yet

  538. he expresses

  539. his trust

  540. in the

  541. Lord.

  542. God's

  543. going to

  544. look after

  545. it,

  546. my son.

  547. He's

  548. going to

  549. take care

  550. of it.

  551. He will

  552. provide.

  553. verse 9.

  554. When they

  555. reached the

  556. place God

  557. had told

  558. him about

  559. it,

  560. Abraham

  561. built an

  562. altar

  563. there,

  564. and he

  565. arranged

  566. the wood

  567. on it,

  568. and he

  569. bound his

  570. son Isaac,

  571. and he

  572. laid him

  573. on the

  574. altar

  575. on top

  576. of the

  577. wood.

  578. Then he

  579. reached out

  580. his hand

  581. and took

  582. the knife

  583. to slay

  584. his son.

  585. But the

  586. angel of

  587. the Lord

  588. called out

  589. to him

  590. from heaven,

  591. Abraham,

  592. Abraham,

  593. here I

  594. am,

  595. he replied.

  596. Do not

  597. lay a

  598. hand on

  599. the boy,

  600. he said.

  601. Do not

  602. do anything

  603. to him.

  604. Now I

  605. know that

  606. you fear

  607. God,

  608. because you

  609. have not

  610. withheld

  611. from me

  612. your son,

  613. your only

  614. son.

  615. What a

  616. moment this

  617. must have

  618. been for

  619. Abraham,

  620. even the

  621. way it's

  622. written here

  623. in the

  624. original

  625. language,

  626. gives us

  627. the sense

  628. that he's

  629. going through

  630. the processes

  631. of preparing

  632. the sacrifice.

  633. He builds

  634. the altar,

  635. he gets

  636. the wood

  637. onto it,

  638. and all

  639. along the

  640. way we're

  641. hoping and

  642. we're expecting

  643. with Abraham

  644. that God's

  645. going to

  646. intervene and

  647. say,

  648. actually,

  649. no,

  650. you don't

  651. have to

  652. do this.

  653. He gets

  654. to that

  655. moment where

  656. he has to

  657. tie up

  658. his own

  659. son.

  660. And we

  661. don't

  662. really

  663. know how

  664. Isaac was

  665. feeling in

  666. this moment.

  667. We can

  668. only imagine.

  669. We assume

  670. that he

  671. allowed himself

  672. to be tied,

  673. that he

  674. submitted to

  675. his father's

  676. will,

  677. and that he

  678. trusted his

  679. father with

  680. this,

  681. allowing himself

  682. to be bound

  683. and put up

  684. on the altar.

  685. We don't know.

  686. Did he question

  687. his father's love

  688. in that moment?

  689. We don't

  690. know.

  691. But it's

  692. not until

  693. the last

  694. moment when

  695. Abraham has

  696. made the

  697. decision to

  698. obey God

  699. that God

  700. intervenes and

  701. speaks to him

  702. from heaven.

  703. He tells him

  704. twice,

  705. don't do

  706. anything to

  707. him.

  708. Don't lay a

  709. hand on

  710. him.

  711. Despite the

  712. command that

  713. Abraham had

  714. been given,

  715. the Lord's

  716. will all

  717. along was

  718. not that

  719. he would

  720. harm his

  721. son Isaac

  722. or do

  723. anything to

  724. him.

  725. This was a

  726. test.

  727. And the

  728. results were

  729. in.

  730. Abraham passed

  731. the test with

  732. flying colors,

  733. and the results

  734. were this.

  735. The Lord says,

  736. now I know

  737. that you

  738. fear God

  739. because you

  740. have not

  741. withheld from

  742. me.

  743. your son,

  744. your only

  745. son.

  746. Let's not

  747. trip over

  748. those words,

  749. now I

  750. know.

  751. It's not as

  752. though God

  753. didn't know

  754. what Abraham

  755. would do.

  756. We might

  757. wonder,

  758. well, why

  759. did he test

  760. him anyway?

  761. If God

  762. knows everything,

  763. if he knew

  764. what Abraham

  765. would do,

  766. why did he

  767. test him in

  768. the first

  769. place?

  770. God

  771. God

  772. values

  773. real

  774. experiential

  775. relationship

  776. kind of

  777. knowledge.

  778. Think of it

  779. in terms of a

  780. natural disaster.

  781. It's one thing to

  782. know that a

  783. natural disaster

  784. is coming.

  785. It's another

  786. thing to go

  787. through it and

  788. to know

  789. personally the

  790. devastation that

  791. it causes.

  792. I think

  793. that's the

  794. way that

  795. we're meant

  796. to read

  797. this.

  798. When the

  799. Lord says,

  800. now I

  801. know,

  802. it's not

  803. that he

  804. didn't know

  805. before.

  806. It's that

  807. now it's

  808. confirmed in

  809. reality,

  810. in experience,

  811. in relationship,

  812. that you

  813. fear God.

  814. That you

  815. fear God.

  816. The fear of

  817. God is a

  818. rich and

  819. meaningful

  820. phrase that

  821. is found

  822. throughout the

  823. whole Bible.

  824. but it's

  825. more than

  826. just an

  827. afraidness of

  828. God,

  829. being afraid

  830. of him.

  831. It has to

  832. do with a

  833. deep reverence

  834. for God,

  835. a regard for

  836. him that

  837. controls the

  838. way that we

  839. live,

  840. the way that

  841. we relate

  842. to him.

  843. At its

  844. core,

  845. it means

  846. taking God

  847. seriously for

  848. who he is

  849. and for

  850. what he has

  851. said.

  852. and it's

  853. not

  854. portrayed in

  855. scripture as

  856. a negative

  857. thing to

  858. fear God.

  859. Rather,

  860. it's portrayed

  861. as a good

  862. thing, a

  863. positive thing,

  864. a thing that's

  865. right, that's

  866. proper.

  867. That's what

  868. this test was

  869. all about.

  870. This word from

  871. the Lord is

  872. really a

  873. commendation.

  874. He's commending

  875. Abraham.

  876. The results of

  877. the test are in

  878. and you

  879. have a

  880. proper fear,

  881. a good and

  882. right fear of

  883. me as you

  884. should.

  885. And the

  886. evidence of

  887. that is that

  888. you have

  889. obeyed my

  890. command.

  891. And not just

  892. any command,

  893. but a hard

  894. command.

  895. You have not

  896. withheld from

  897. me your son.

  898. Do you notice

  899. the link there

  900. between fear

  901. of God and

  902. obedience?

  903. genuine fear

  904. of God.

  905. If we have

  906. that, the

  907. evidence will

  908. be that we

  909. obey him,

  910. that we take

  911. his word

  912. seriously.

  913. As it

  914. pertains to

  915. faith, that's

  916. really what we've

  917. been looking at

  918. in this series.

  919. Fear of God

  920. and faith in

  921. God are really

  922. two sides of

  923. the same coin.

  924. At the end

  925. of the day,

  926. they both

  927. have at

  928. their core

  929. taking God

  930. seriously for

  931. who he is

  932. and what he

  933. has said.

  934. And if we

  935. look back

  936. through this

  937. story leading

  938. up to this

  939. moment where

  940. he goes to

  941. sacrifice Isaac,

  942. it's not

  943. afraidness,

  944. afraidness that

  945. we've seen,

  946. it's faith.

  947. It's trust.

  948. We will

  949. come back to

  950. you.

  951. God will

  952. provide the

  953. lamb required

  954. for the

  955. sacrifice.

  956. And that's

  957. exactly what

  958. happened in a

  959. very tangible

  960. way.

  961. Abraham looked

  962. up and there

  963. in a thicket,

  964. he saw a

  965. ram, a male

  966. sheep caught

  967. by its horns.

  968. He went

  969. over and

  970. took the

  971. ram and

  972. sacrificed it

  973. as a burnt

  974. offering instead

  975. of his son.

  976. So Abraham

  977. called that

  978. place, the

  979. Lord will

  980. provide.

  981. And to

  982. this day,

  983. it is said,

  984. on the

  985. mountain of

  986. the Lord,

  987. it will be

  988. provided.

  989. God then

  990. confirms and

  991. goes on to

  992. express again

  993. and expand

  994. upon even the

  995. promises that

  996. he has made.

  997. Because you

  998. have done

  999. this, you

  1000. have this

  1001. fear of me,

  1002. this faith in

  1003. me, and

  1004. have obeyed

  1005. me like

  1006. this, I

  1007. will surely

  1008. do everything

  1009. that I've

  1010. promised and

  1011. a little bit

  1012. more.

  1013. Abraham

  1014. then returns

  1015. to his

  1016. servants with

  1017. Isaac and

  1018. they set

  1019. off together

  1020. for

  1021. Beersheba.

  1022. Let's

  1023. take a

  1024. moment to

  1025. consider the

  1026. inspired

  1027. commentary on

  1028. this story

  1029. from Hebrews.

  1030. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11:17

  1031. chapter 11

  1032. verse 17.

  1033. This is

  1034. what the

  1035. Lord had

  1036. to say

  1037. about that

  1038. moment long

  1039. ago.

  1040. By faith,

  1041. Abraham,

  1042. when God

  1043. tested him,

  1044. offered Isaac

  1045. as a

  1046. sacrifice.

  1047. He who

  1048. had embraced

  1049. the promises

  1050. was about to

  1051. sacrifice his

  1052. one and

  1053. only son,

  1054. even though

  1055. God had

  1056. said to

  1057. him,

  1058. it is through

  1059. Isaac that

  1060. your offspring

  1061. will be

  1062. reckoned.

  1063. Now watch

  1064. this.

  1065. Abraham

  1066. reasoned that

  1067. God could

  1068. even raise

  1069. the dead.

  1070. And so in

  1071. a manner of

  1072. speaking,

  1073. he did

  1074. receive Isaac

  1075. back from

  1076. death.

  1077. Do you hear

  1078. what the

  1079. Lord is

  1080. saying there?

  1081. Abraham

  1082. had amazing

  1083. faith in

  1084. this moment.

  1085. He knew

  1086. that he

  1087. must obey

  1088. and offer

  1089. the sacrifice

  1090. and he

  1091. also

  1092. believed with

  1093. all his

  1094. heart that

  1095. God would

  1096. keep the

  1097. promises made

  1098. concerning

  1099. Isaac.

  1100. He believed

  1101. both and so

  1102. that leaves only

  1103. two possibilities,

  1104. doesn't it?

  1105. The one

  1106. possibility is

  1107. that God

  1108. will stop

  1109. me before

  1110. I kill

  1111. Isaac on

  1112. the altar.

  1113. and the

  1114. other possibility

  1115. is that if

  1116. God actually

  1117. expects me to

  1118. kill my

  1119. son,

  1120. he's going

  1121. to raise

  1122. him back to

  1123. life from

  1124. the dead

  1125. because he

  1126. will keep

  1127. his promise

  1128. and the

  1129. promise was

  1130. made to

  1131. Isaac and

  1132. his descendants.

  1133. Isn't

  1134. that amazing?

  1135. Abraham

  1136. believed God

  1137. for a

  1138. miracle.

  1139. Do you

  1140. realize the

  1141. position that

  1142. he was put

  1143. in?

  1144. He was

  1145. asked to

  1146. do something

  1147. and if he

  1148. succeeded in

  1149. doing it,

  1150. it would

  1151. cause the

  1152. promise to

  1153. fail.

  1154. The promise

  1155. was made

  1156. that Isaac

  1157. would inherit

  1158. the land and

  1159. his descendants

  1160. would be this

  1161. great numerous

  1162. offspring.

  1163. If Abraham

  1164. kills Isaac,

  1165. the promise

  1166. fails,

  1167. doesn't it?

  1168. God put him

  1169. in that

  1170. position on

  1171. purpose where

  1172. he had this

  1173. conundrum and

  1174. Abraham passed

  1175. the test with

  1176. flying colors.

  1177. He believed

  1178. both that God

  1179. would keep his

  1180. promise 100%

  1181. about Isaac

  1182. and that God

  1183. would provide

  1184. the lamb that

  1185. was needed for

  1186. the sacrifice

  1187. that was required

  1188. for his sins.

  1189. What an

  1190. amazing moment.

  1191. What an

  1192. amazing example.

  1193. I love this

  1194. story.

  1195. I love this

  1196. story most

  1197. of all because

  1198. of all the

  1199. parallels, the

  1200. rich parallels

  1201. that it has to

  1202. the gospel, to

  1203. the story of

  1204. Jesus.

  1205. Some people

  1206. here see a

  1207. whole bunch of

  1208. coincidences and

  1209. I used to be

  1210. one of those

  1211. people.

  1212. people

  1213. know what

  1214. I'm not

  1215. anymore.

  1216. I do believe

  1217. that Moses

  1218. did not know

  1219. what all of

  1220. these parallels

  1221. would be as

  1222. he wrote this

  1223. story down under

  1224. the inspiration

  1225. of the Spirit.

  1226. But I believe

  1227. that God knew

  1228. that these

  1229. parallels were

  1230. here and not

  1231. just knew but

  1232. that it was

  1233. intentional.

  1234. Think about

  1235. the story of

  1236. Jesus for a

  1237. moment as I

  1238. recount just a

  1239. few of the

  1240. details of

  1241. this story.

  1242. A promised

  1243. son must be

  1244. sacrificed and

  1245. not just any

  1246. son but an

  1247. only son, a

  1248. son deeply

  1249. loved by his

  1250. father.

  1251. And this

  1252. sacrifice will

  1253. be the ultimate

  1254. test of his

  1255. father's character.

  1256. This son was

  1257. made to carry

  1258. the wood up

  1259. the hill.

  1260. to his death.

  1261. The son

  1262. doesn't resist

  1263. or protest

  1264. but submits

  1265. to his

  1266. father in

  1267. trusting silence.

  1268. The father

  1269. is willing

  1270. to do

  1271. what is

  1272. required,

  1273. even if it

  1274. means he

  1275. must offer

  1276. his own

  1277. son as a

  1278. sacrifice.

  1279. from the

  1280. perspective of

  1281. Isaac,

  1282. whether we

  1283. understand it

  1284. or not,

  1285. God has

  1286. required our

  1287. death because

  1288. of sin.

  1289. Yet at just

  1290. the right

  1291. moment, God

  1292. intervenes to

  1293. provide an

  1294. acceptable

  1295. substitute so

  1296. that we can

  1297. go free and

  1298. unharmed.

  1299. the lesson

  1300. that we see

  1301. here is that

  1302. God will

  1303. provide the

  1304. lamb needed

  1305. for the

  1306. sacrifice that

  1307. God has

  1308. required for

  1309. sins.

  1310. And we

  1311. are even

  1312. pointed to

  1313. the reality

  1314. that was

  1315. going on in

  1316. Abraham's

  1317. heart,

  1318. that if the

  1319. son should

  1320. die,

  1321. we should

  1322. trust that

  1323. God can

  1324. raise him

  1325. from the

  1326. dead.

  1327. God,

  1328. are all

  1329. these

  1330. parallels

  1331. coincidence?

  1332. I don't

  1333. think so.

  1334. This is not

  1335. the only

  1336. place where

  1337. God does

  1338. this thing.

  1339. He does it

  1340. all throughout

  1341. the Old

  1342. Testament.

  1343. He tells

  1344. what is yet

  1345. to come

  1346. long before

  1347. it happens.

  1348. Not

  1349. necessarily

  1350. always with

  1351. words,

  1352. but sometimes

  1353. with the

  1354. events of

  1355. history

  1356. themselves.

  1357. I see

  1358. it as

  1359. God's

  1360. signature

  1361. authenticating

  1362. that this

  1363. story is

  1364. his.

  1365. And this

  1366. is where

  1367. we see

  1368. for the

  1369. first time

  1370. the beginning

  1371. to the

  1372. answer of

  1373. this great

  1374. question.

  1375. We came

  1376. up to this

  1377. question earlier.

  1378. Abraham is a

  1379. sinner.

  1380. He's blown

  1381. it.

  1382. We've watched

  1383. it.

  1384. And yet

  1385. God is

  1386. counting him

  1387. righteous,

  1388. treating him

  1389. as though he

  1390. is not a

  1391. sinner.

  1392. How can he

  1393. do that

  1394. and be

  1395. just?

  1396. It's here

  1397. that Abraham

  1398. is being

  1399. led to that

  1400. place where

  1401. he embraces

  1402. that God

  1403. will provide

  1404. the lamb

  1405. required,

  1406. the sacrifice

  1407. required for

  1408. his sins.

  1409. if we

  1410. miss these

  1411. parallels,

  1412. we miss

  1413. the good

  1414. news.

  1415. We miss

  1416. the gospel

  1417. that's here

  1418. for us.

  1419. Finally,

  1420. what do we

  1421. learn about

  1422. faith from

  1423. this story?

  1424. That's kind

  1425. of what we've

  1426. been focusing

  1427. on in this

  1428. series,

  1429. faith.

  1430. There is so

  1431. much that we

  1432. could pull

  1433. out of this

  1434. passage,

  1435. but I want

  1436. to just take

  1437. one specific

  1438. angle,

  1439. and I'm

  1440. indebted to

  1441. Dale Ralph

  1442. Davis and

  1443. his sermon,

  1444. or I don't

  1445. know if it's

  1446. a sermon,

  1447. it was put

  1448. into a book,

  1449. but he had

  1450. a chapter

  1451. on this in

  1452. his book

  1453. and kind of

  1454. helped me to

  1455. see this

  1456. angle.

  1457. So some of

  1458. what I'm

  1459. going to say

  1460. is borrowed

  1461. from him.

  1462. What do we

  1463. learn about

  1464. faith from

  1465. Abraham?

  1466. Well,

  1467. first of all,

  1468. our situation

  1469. is not the

  1470. same as his.

  1471. God spoke

  1472. with an audible

  1473. voice to him

  1474. and required

  1475. this of him.

  1476. That's not

  1477. the situation

  1478. that we find

  1479. ourselves in

  1480. today.

  1481. But perhaps

  1482. we do find

  1483. ourselves in

  1484. an Abraham-like

  1485. situation,

  1486. a situation

  1487. where God

  1488. has brought

  1489. something into

  1490. our life

  1491. or allowed

  1492. something to

  1493. happen

  1494. that we don't

  1495. understand,

  1496. a situation

  1497. where perhaps

  1498. we're asking

  1499. the question

  1500. like Abraham

  1501. did.

  1502. Why God?

  1503. Why this?

  1504. Why now?

  1505. Perhaps a

  1506. situation in

  1507. which we look

  1508. at the promises

  1509. that we've been

  1510. given in the

  1511. word of God

  1512. and we look

  1513. at our

  1514. situation,

  1515. we wonder

  1516. how can

  1517. these be

  1518. true?

  1519. You said,

  1520. Lord,

  1521. that you are

  1522. our refuge

  1523. and strength,

  1524. a very present

  1525. help in

  1526. times of

  1527. trouble and

  1528. yet look

  1529. at the

  1530. mess of

  1531. my life.

  1532. Where are

  1533. you?

  1534. Times when

  1535. we are

  1536. wondering

  1537. about God

  1538. himself.

  1539. what we

  1540. thought we

  1541. knew about

  1542. him

  1543. doesn't

  1544. seem to

  1545. be holding

  1546. true.

  1547. We can't

  1548. make heads

  1549. or tails

  1550. of what

  1551. God is

  1552. doing in

  1553. this

  1554. situation.

  1555. Deep down

  1556. in our

  1557. hearts,

  1558. maybe we

  1559. even feel

  1560. like we

  1561. have a

  1562. problem

  1563. with his

  1564. ways.

  1565. how do

  1566. we handle

  1567. those kinds

  1568. of

  1569. situations?

  1570. I believe

  1571. that God's

  1572. given us

  1573. Abraham's

  1574. story as

  1575. an example

  1576. and very

  1577. simply that

  1578. as Abraham

  1579. did,

  1580. we should

  1581. trust him

  1582. completely

  1583. and obey

  1584. and do

  1585. what he's

  1586. asked us

  1587. to do.

  1588. he's

  1589. given us

  1590. something

  1591. very

  1592. specific,

  1593. two things

  1594. really in

  1595. this passage

  1596. to trust

  1597. in.

  1598. First of

  1599. all,

  1600. trust his

  1601. promises.

  1602. Even if

  1603. they don't

  1604. seem to

  1605. be holding

  1606. true in

  1607. that moment,

  1608. God will

  1609. keep his

  1610. promises no

  1611. matter what.

  1612. Abraham

  1613. believed that

  1614. God could

  1615. do a

  1616. miracle and

  1617. raise his

  1618. son from

  1619. the dead

  1620. if he had

  1621. to,

  1622. but that

  1623. he would

  1624. do whatever

  1625. it took

  1626. to keep

  1627. his

  1628. promises.

  1629. promises.

  1630. Trust that

  1631. God will

  1632. keep his

  1633. promises.

  1634. He always

  1635. does.

  1636. He always

  1637. will.

  1638. And second,

  1639. trust that

  1640. God will

  1641. provide.

  1642. Isn't that

  1643. the main

  1644. lesson of

  1645. this story?

  1646. That's what

  1647. Abraham came

  1648. to express

  1649. before the

  1650. sacrifice.

  1651. God will

  1652. provide the

  1653. lamb for

  1654. the sacrifice,

  1655. my son.

  1656. And that's

  1657. what Abraham

  1658. expressed

  1659. after as

  1660. he named

  1661. that mountain,

  1662. that region,

  1663. the Lord

  1664. will provide.

  1665. Perhaps

  1666. you're going

  1667. through one

  1668. of those

  1669. kinds of

  1670. situations

  1671. right now

  1672. in your

  1673. life.

  1674. If so,

  1675. I want

  1676. to say

  1677. to you

  1678. with Abraham,

  1679. lift your

  1680. head and

  1681. look to

  1682. the Lord.

  1683. He will

  1684. look after

  1685. it.

  1686. He will

  1687. provide.

  1688. He will

  1689. see to

  1690. it what

  1691. is required

  1692. in this

  1693. situation.

  1694. You can

  1695. count on

  1696. him for

  1697. that.

  1698. And if

  1699. there's any

  1700. doubt about

  1701. whether this

  1702. is just for

  1703. Abraham or

  1704. if this is for

  1705. us too,

  1706. the Lord has

  1707. said these

  1708. similar words

  1709. again

  1710. through the

  1711. apostle Paul

  1712. in his

  1713. letter to

  1714. the church

  1715. at Rome,

  1716. what did

  1717. he say?

  1718. He said,

  1719. and we

  1720. know

  1721. that God

  1722. causes all

  1723. things to

  1724. work together

  1725. for the good

  1726. of those who

  1727. love him,

  1728. who have been

  1729. called according

  1730. to his

  1731. purpose.

  1732. how can

  1733. we be

  1734. sure that

  1735. that's for

  1736. us,

  1737. that God

  1738. will really

  1739. treat us

  1740. like that?

  1741. Listen,

  1742. he who

  1743. did not

  1744. spare his

  1745. own son,

  1746. but gave

  1747. him up for

  1748. us all,

  1749. how will

  1750. he not

  1751. also along

  1752. with him

  1753. graciously

  1754. give us

  1755. all things,

  1756. all things,

  1757. all things

  1758. that we

  1759. need,

  1760. all things

  1761. that are

  1762. good for

  1763. us.

  1764. He's

  1765. already

  1766. given us

  1767. the ultimate

  1768. and that's

  1769. the evidence,

  1770. that's the

  1771. proof that

  1772. he will

  1773. look after

  1774. us and

  1775. take care

  1776. of us,

  1777. even in

  1778. those situations

  1779. where we

  1780. have no

  1781. idea how

  1782. it's going

  1783. to happen.

  1784. Nothing

  1785. can separate

  1786. us from

  1787. his love.

  1788. And as

  1789. Abraham learned

  1790. that day,

  1791. not even

  1792. my own

  1793. sin,

  1794. the sacrifice

  1795. that was

  1796. required was

  1797. far costlier

  1798. than he

  1799. expected.

  1800. But he

  1801. learned that

  1802. day that

  1803. God will

  1804. provide the

  1805. lamb that's

  1806. required.

  1807. God will

  1808. look after

  1809. it.

  1810. God will

  1811. look after

  1812. you and

  1813. me.

  1814. Let's

  1815. pray.

  1816. Okay.

  1817. God will

  1818. pray.

  1819. God will

  1820. pray.

  1821. God will

  1822. pray.

  1823. God will

  1824. pray.

  1825. Father in

  1826. heaven,

  1827. thank you

  1828. so much

  1829. for these

  1830. words.

  1831. They come

  1832. at a

  1833. needed time

  1834. for many

  1835. of us.

  1836. It's

  1837. hard to

  1838. trust you

  1839. when what

  1840. we see

  1841. happening

  1842. in our

  1843. lives,

  1844. in the

  1845. lives of

  1846. friends and

  1847. family,

  1848. is so

  1849. opposite to

  1850. what we

  1851. expected.

  1852. strengthen our

  1853. faith in

  1854. you,

  1855. Lord.

  1856. Teach us

  1857. to live

  1858. as Abraham

  1859. did, to

  1860. walk by

  1861. faith and

  1862. not by

  1863. sight, so

  1864. that you

  1865. might receive

  1866. all the

  1867. glory.

  1868. In

  1869. Christ's

  1870. name,

  1871. amen.
