  1. Well, this morning we're bringing this series that we've been doing on Abraham to a close.

  2. And it's been quite the journey to look at Abraham's life and to see all that he has been through.

  3. And as we've gone through his story, we've seen that this is about so much more than just Abraham.

  4. This is really God's story.

  5. This is the story of our world.

  6. This is the story of how God is going to fix the big problem with our world.

  7. The story began with the big events that really have shaped our world, with God's creating the world, with the rebellion of humanity against God, the fall of man, with the flood, with the confusion of languages at Babel.

  8. And in all of this, we see a good world that became broken because of sin.

  9. We see how humanity, despite even a fresh start, having a fresh start at a couple points, is spiraling downward, away from God.

  10. What is God going to do to fix this?

  11. And we see a good start at a couple points, with the flood, with the flood, with the flood, with the flood.

  12. And we've seen that the start of his plan, of his solution, involves this guy named Abraham in Ur of the Chaldeans.

  13. God, seemingly out of nowhere, speaks to him.

  14. He, with his family, they worshipped other so-called gods over there in Ur.

  15. And one day, God simply revealed himself to Abraham and called him to leave his homeland and to make the journey to the land that he would show him.

  16. And at that time, God made some amazing promises to him, promises to bless him, promises to protect him, and the big promise to bless all the families of the earth through him.

  17. Abraham, by faith, obeyed, and he went to the land that he would later receive as his inheritance.

  18. When he entered Canaan, we saw how God, very, very, very soon after he entered, gave him this promise,

  19. To your offspring, I will give this land.

  20. And as Abraham began to settle and live in the land of Canaan, we saw very quickly that Abraham is a man just like us.

  21. He blew it.

  22. He sinned, just like us.

  23. He wrestled with unbelief and doubt, just like we do.

  24. He tried to take situations into his own hand and deal with it, rather than trusting God's promises at different points, just like we do.

  25. And yet in the midst of all of that, we watched as God was gracious to him and blessed him again and again and again.

  26. And Abraham plundered kings.

  27. His household grew.

  28. His possessions grew.

  29. He, in one sense, came to this moment where he has all of this stuff.

  30. He's got servants.

  31. He's got livestock.

  32. Everything's going well.

  33. Except for one thing.

  34. He has no children.

  35. Sarah has been barren.

  36. And as long as they've been married, she's been unable to conceive.

  37. And so he's got all of this.

  38. But who will it go to when he dies?

  39. No son.

  40. We watched as Abraham wrestled with this.

  41. And God made a covenant with him.

  42. He made promises to him.

  43. Your offspring will be as beyond numbering as the stars in the sky.

  44. And we saw how Abraham in that moment believed God.

  45. And on account of his faith, God gave to him or treated him as righteous, though he was a sinner.

  46. Finally, this whole thing about the son and the offspring.

  47. This was really the key issue in Abraham and Sarah's lives.

  48. God's made all of this.

  49. God's made all of these promises.

  50. But almost all of them are connected to this.

  51. Having a child.

  52. Having a son.

  53. How can all of this come true without that?

  54. We watched as Abraham and Sarah tried to help God out and did the surrogate motherhood thing.

  55. Heartache and division came into the family.

  56. He got a son, Ishmael.

  57. And then we watched as 13 years later, God said, no, it's not going to be Ishmael.

  58. Sarah is going to bear a son, Isaac.

  59. And he will be the one to whom this covenant and all these promises will be kept.

  60. We watched as God reaffirmed his covenant again and again.

  61. And finally, as this child of promise was born in Abraham and Sarah's old age.

  62. A miracle child.

  63. A gift of God.

  64. And then we watched as well as it came to the moment of ultimate testing for Abraham

  65. when God asked him to sacrifice this son.

  66. And he passed the test.

  67. He was willing.

  68. And God did not have him go through with it at the end.

  69. And in all of this, we've seen how Abraham has been learning little by little to trust the Lord.

  70. And a little more and a little more.

  71. To take God at his word.

  72. And to live according to those promises.

  73. And we've watched at the same time as Abraham is growing in his faith and trust.

  74. God seems to be promising more and more.

  75. And the promises of what God will do for Abraham and his offspring are growing.

  76. Finally, we come today to the last chapter of Abraham's story.

  77. If you have your Bible with you, please open it to Genesis chapter 23.

    Genesis 23 chapter mention

  78. Genesis chapter 23.

    Genesis 23 chapter mention

  79. And we're going to read this whole chapter.

  80. Genesis chapter 23.

    Genesis 23 chapter mention

  81. Sarah lived to be 127 years old.

  82. She died at Kiriath Arba, that is Hebron, in the land of Canaan.

  83. And Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her.

  84. Then Abraham rose from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites.

  85. He said,

  86. I am a foreigner and stranger among you.

  87. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead.

  88. The Hittites replied to Abraham,

  89. Sir, listen to us.

  90. You are a mighty prince among us.

  91. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs.

  92. None of us will refuse you his tomb for burying your dead.

  93. Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the Hittites.

  94. He said to them,

  95. If you are willing to let me bury my dead,

  96. then listen to me and intercede with Ephron, son of Zohar, on my behalf.

  97. So he will sell me the cave of Machpelah, which belongs to him

  98. and is at the end of his field.

  99. Ask him to sell it to me for the full price as a burial site among you.

  100. Ephron the Hittite was sitting among his people

  101. and he replied to Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites

  102. who had come to the gate of his city.

  103. No, my lord, he said,

  104. Listen to me.

  105. I give you the field

  106. and I give you the cave that is in it.

  107. I give it to you in the presence of my people.

  108. Bury your dead.

  109. Again, Abraham bowed down before the people of the land

  110. and he said to Ephron in their hearing,

  111. Listen to me, if you will.

  112. I will pay the price of the field.

  113. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there.

  114. Ephron answered Abraham,

  115. Listen to me, my lord.

  116. The land is worth 400 shekels of silver.

  117. But what is that between you and me?

  118. Bury your dead.

  119. Abraham agreed to Ephron's terms

  120. and weighed out for him the price he had named

  121. in the hearing of the Hittites,

  122. 400 shekels of silver,

  123. according to the weight current among the merchants.

  124. So Ephron's field in Machpelah near Mamre,

  125. both the field and the cave in it

  126. and all the trees within the borders of the field

  127. was deeded to Abraham as his property

  128. in the presence of all the Hittites

  129. who had come to the gate of the city.

  130. Afterward, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave

  131. in the field of Machpelah near Mamre

  132. in the land of Canaan.

  133. So the field and the cave in it

  134. were deeded to Abraham by the Hittites

  135. as a burial site.

  136. After this, it talks about Isaac and Rebekah

  137. and Abraham finding a wife for Isaac.

  138. We're going to skip over that

  139. and go to chapter 25

  140. and read there starting in verse 7.

  141. Abraham lived 175 years.

  142. Then Abraham breathed his last

  143. and died at a good old age,

  144. an old man and full of years.

  145. And he was gathered to his people.

  146. His sons Isaac and Ishmael

  147. buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre

  148. in the field of Ephron,

  149. son of Zohar the Hittite,

  150. the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites.

  151. There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah.

  152. And the story goes on to focus on Isaac after this.

  153. This is the last chapter in Genesis of Abraham's life.

  154. And even as we see at the end,

  155. there's a lot here that really speaks

  156. about what the Lord is doing in this situation.

  157. It all starts with Sarah's death back in chapter 23.

  158. And it's quite telling what Abraham says

  159. when his wife passes away.

  160. He speaks to the Hittites

  161. and in verse 4 of chapter 23,

  162. he says,

  163. I'm a foreigner and stranger among you.

  164. Sell me some property

  165. so that I can bury my wife.

  166. It says a lot about Abraham

  167. and where things have come to

  168. until now in the story.

  169. I mean, by this point,

  170. we're kind of expecting that Abraham

  171. will have already bought a lot of land.

  172. And yet up until this point,

  173. he doesn't actually own any of it yet.

  174. And he freely admits,

  175. I'm still a stranger.

  176. I'm still a foreigner among you.

  177. Sell me a piece of land

  178. so I can bury my dead.

  179. And the response of the Hittites

  180. is wonderful.

  181. They are the people

  182. who would consider it their native land

  183. or their homeland.

  184. And in here,

  185. we see the blessing of God

  186. on Abraham's life again.

  187. They respond very favorably.

  188. You're a mighty prince among us.

  189. Take your pick.

  190. Take your pick of the choicest of tombs

  191. and bury her there.

  192. None of us will refuse you.

  193. So Abraham takes his pick.

  194. The field of Ephron, the Hittite.

  195. That's the one that I would like.

  196. I'll pay the full price.

  197. And again, we see the favor

  198. that God has upon Abraham

  199. that he's given him

  200. in the eyes of the Hittites.

  201. They're ready to just give the land to him.

  202. Three times Ephron says it.

  203. I give you the field.

  204. I give you the cave in it.

  205. I give it to you.

  206. Take it.

  207. Bury your dead.

  208. Even after Abraham offers again to pay

  209. 400 shekels of silver.

  210. What's that between you and me?

  211. Just take the field.

  212. Again, we see God blessing Abraham.

  213. He's given him favor

  214. in the eyes of the people

  215. that this land really belongs to.

  216. So Ephron's field

  217. is given to Abraham.

  218. So he buys it.

  219. And he gets his first piece of property

  220. that he owns in the promised land

  221. towards the end of his life here.

  222. Three times the author makes it clear

  223. it was deeded to him as his property.

  224. And right about now

  225. if we've been really following closely this story

  226. we're thinking, yes!

  227. Finally!

  228. This promise about the land is coming true.

  229. That's what the Lord said.

  230. I give this land to you

  231. and now Abraham has his name

  232. on some of it.

  233. But it's at this point

  234. that we start to realize and consider

  235. that Abraham is near the end of his life.

  236. In fact, not long after this

  237. he dies.

  238. And when he does

  239. we start to look back over this story

  240. and wonder

  241. just how has God kept his promises?

  242. He's made some big promises.

  243. How has he kept them to Abraham?

  244. Abraham.

  245. One of the first things God said

  246. was that he would bless Abraham.

  247. He certainly has kept that.

  248. Abraham's household has grown.

  249. His servants have increased in number.

  250. His animals.

  251. His material possessions.

  252. His wealth.

  253. Lots.

  254. He's plundered kings at different times.

  255. God has blessed him in that way.

  256. We read about how God credited righteousness to him.

  257. Not a physical blessing

  258. but a spiritual blessing.

  259. God is dealing with him favorably

  260. even though he doesn't deserve it.

  261. Yes, God has kept this promise.

  262. He has blessed Abraham the whole way along

  263. and we see that clearly.

  264. God promised also to protect Abraham.

  265. He said,

  266. I will bless those who bless you

  267. and I will curse those who curse you.

  268. And God has done that too.

  269. We saw that when Abraham went down to Egypt

  270. and Sarah was taken.

  271. We saw that when King Abimelech took Sarah.

  272. In both situations,

  273. God came to Abraham and Sarah's defense

  274. and turned the situation around.

  275. We saw that when Abraham went to rescue Lot,

  276. he ended up going into battle.

  277. God, as he had promised,

  278. was Abraham's shield

  279. and protected him

  280. throughout his whole life.

  281. God promised to make Abraham's name great.

  282. Has he done that?

  283. Well, it certainly seems as though he has.

  284. I mean,

  285. Pharaoh had to give his wife back

  286. and give all this stuff to him.

  287. Some of the kings of the land

  288. revered him and respected him.

  289. The king of Sodom and Gomorrah

  290. who he rescued and bailed out

  291. of the situation that they were in.

  292. Yes, God has increased him in fame

  293. and made him well known

  294. and revered and respected in the land.

  295. And we see that again here with the Hittites.

  296. God promised that Abraham

  297. would be a blessing to others.

  298. And if the attitude and treatment

  299. of the Hittites is evidenced,

  300. then we see that he has done that as well.

  301. He was a blessing to Lot

  302. who he went and rescued

  303. from the hands of those kings

  304. that came to attack Sodom and Gomorrah.

  305. And then there was the promise of a son

  306. through Sarah,

  307. which God absolutely kept.

  308. And he didn't just,

  309. this wasn't a small thing.

  310. This was a miracle child

  311. born in old age

  312. and kept at the exact time

  313. that God said he would.

  314. All of these promises

  315. were kept.

  316. But what of the other promises?

  317. God promised that he would make Abraham

  318. into a great nation.

  319. Not yet.

  320. Not something that we could say

  321. is true yet.

  322. At this point,

  323. Abraham has Isaac.

  324. That's it.

  325. He's,

  326. this is a promise

  327. that isn't fulfilled yet.

  328. There's still more to come.

  329. And it's dependent on Isaac.

  330. He promised that Abraham's offspring

  331. would be beyond numbering,

  332. like the stars in the sky,

  333. like the sand on the seashore.

  334. Another,

  335. not yet.

  336. It's just Isaac.

  337. It's pretty easy to number.

  338. He's married,

  339. but they don't have any kids yet

  340. at the time that Abraham dies.

  341. There's the big promise.

  342. All families or nations on the earth

  343. will be blessed through you.

  344. Not even,

  345. not even a hint

  346. of how that's going to happen.

  347. I mean,

  348. that's quite the thing to say

  349. to Abraham,

  350. the guy who at the time

  351. was married to a barren woman

  352. and was living in a foreign land.

  353. All the families of the earth.

  354. How was that going to happen?

  355. We don't know yet.

  356. Abraham didn't know yet.

  357. God promised that he would be

  358. the father of many nations

  359. or a multitude of nations.

  360. Again,

  361. not yet.

  362. Not something that,

  363. that has happened yet.

  364. And all of these promises,

  365. they,

  366. they really seem to pertain to

  367. Abraham's offspring,

  368. to Isaac.

  369. And so,

  370. there is,

  371. there is still much to

  372. anticipate

  373. or look forward to

  374. from Abraham's perspective

  375. if God is to

  376. be faithful

  377. and keep his promise.

  378. And then finally,

  379. there's the promise

  380. of the land.

  381. The promise

  382. of the land.

  383. This one seems

  384. pretty obvious.

  385. Has God

  386. kept this promise?

  387. Well,

  388. it remains to be seen.

  389. I mean,

  390. the land is supposed

  391. to be an everlasting

  392. possession for,

  393. for Abraham

  394. and his offspring.

  395. They're in it right now.

  396. But if we're honest,

  397. all they've got

  398. is this little

  399. burial plot.

  400. That's a start.

  401. That's something.

  402. But it's

  403. not even close

  404. to the whole

  405. of what was promised.

  406. When Abraham

  407. initially arrived

  408. in the land,

  409. this is what

  410. God said,

  411. to your offspring

  412. I will give this land.

  413. And so in one sense,

  414. yeah,

  415. this remains

  416. to be seen.

  417. How will God

  418. do this?

  419. But then in all,

  420. most of the other times

  421. that God speaks

  422. of this promise,

  423. this is what he says

  424. in Genesis 13,

    Genesis 13:15

  425. verse 15.

  426. All the land

  427. that you see,

  428. talking to Abraham,

  429. I will give to you

  430. and your offspring

  431. forever.

  432. Verse 17

  433. of the same chapter,

  434. walk through the length

  435. and breadth of the land

  436. for I am giving it

  437. to you.

  438. Referring to Abraham.

  439. Again,

  440. in chapter 15,

  441. verse 7,

  442. I am the Lord

  443. who brought you

  444. out of Ur

  445. of the Chaldeans

  446. to give you,

  447. referring to Abraham,

  448. this land,

  449. to take possession

  450. of it.

  451. And again,

  452. in chapter 17,

  453. verse 8,

  454. the whole land

  455. of Canaan

  456. where you now reside

  457. as a foreigner,

  458. I will give

  459. as an everlasting

  460. possession

  461. to you,

  462. Abraham,

  463. and your descendants

  464. after you.

  465. So you've got to

  466. wonder,

  467. Abraham has got

  468. to be wondering,

  469. to me

  470. or just

  471. to my descendants?

  472. How does this

  473. work here?

  474. In fact,

  475. we know he was

  476. thinking about it

  477. because he says

  478. that he was.

  479. He asks the Lord

  480. about this

  481. in chapter 15,

  482. verse 8.

  483. This was the time

  484. when God made

  485. a covenant

  486. with Abraham.

  487. Abraham.

  488. He said,

  489. Sovereign Lord,

  490. how can I know

  491. that I will

  492. gain possession

  493. of it?

  494. I mean,

  495. think about this.

  496. I'm going to

  497. give this land

  498. to you.

  499. And he looks

  500. around and he

  501. sees this land

  502. is occupied.

  503. It's full of

  504. people.

  505. And they've been

  506. here for a long

  507. time.

  508. They've got

  509. fortified cities.

  510. There's kings

  511. in this land.

  512. They have armies,

  513. militia.

  514. How is God

  515. going to do

  516. this to me?

  517. What does the

  518. Lord say in

  519. response?

  520. Well, he says,

  521. let's make a

  522. covenant.

  523. There's your

  524. proof.

  525. There's your

  526. guarantee that

  527. it will happen.

  528. And then the

  529. Lord gives this

  530. word in the

  531. midst of this

  532. covenant ceremony,

  533. which we read

  534. earlier, but I'll

  535. read it again.

  536. He says,

  537. Know for certain

  538. that for 400

  539. years your

  540. descendants will

  541. be strangers

  542. in a country

  543. not their own

  544. and that they

  545. will be enslaved

  546. and mistreated

  547. there.

  548. But I will

  549. punish the

  550. nation they

  551. serve as

  552. slaves and

  553. afterward they

  554. will come out

  555. with great

  556. possessions.

  557. You, however,

  558. will go to

  559. your ancestors

  560. in peace and

  561. be buried at

  562. a good old

  563. age.

  564. In the fourth

  565. generation,

  566. your descendants

  567. will come back

  568. here for the

  569. sin of the

  570. Amorites has

  571. not yet reached

  572. its full

  573. measure.

  574. And we

  575. imagine that

  576. Abraham is

  577. probably wondering,

  578. so what is

  579. it?

  580. Am I going to

  581. possess this

  582. land myself?

  583. It doesn't seem

  584. like it from this.

  585. It seems that it's

  586. going to be my

  587. descendants that

  588. will possess it

  589. and not for quite

  590. a while.

  591. 400 years.

  592. The Amorites are

  593. going to stay in

  594. the land until

  595. their sins pile up

  596. to the measure

  597. and it'll be

  598. 400 years.

  599. But Lord, you

  600. said to me, you

  601. would give this

  602. land.

  603. Did you only

  604. really mean to

  605. my descendants, to

  606. my offspring?

  607. Are they going to

  608. kind of receive it

  609. on my behalf?

  610. Did God keep this

  611. promise?

  612. it seems like he

  613. started to by the

  614. end.

  615. He's got this

  616. field now, this

  617. burial plot.

  618. But is that it?

  619. We're kind of

  620. left to wonder, did

  621. God fail to keep

  622. this promise to

  623. Abraham?

  624. It's at this

  625. point that we're

  626. going to flip to

  627. the New Testament,

  628. book of Hebrews,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  629. chapter 11.

  630. Thankfully, we're

  631. not left to just

  632. try to figure

  633. this out for

  634. ourselves.

  635. We actually have

  636. inspired commentary

  637. that points back

  638. and helps us see a

  639. little bit of what's

  640. going on here.

  641. Hebrews, chapter

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  642. 11.

  643. The author of

  644. Hebrews is

  645. writing to Jewish

  646. believers to

  647. encourage them

  648. in their faith.

  649. And he's giving

  650. examples of people

  651. who have

  652. demonstrated faith.

  653. And Abraham is

  654. one of them.

  655. And it's here that

  656. we learn some

  657. things about

  658. Abraham and what

  659. we're meant to

  660. really take from

  661. Abraham and his

  662. life.

  663. Verse 8.

  664. By faith, Abraham,

  665. when called to go to

  666. a place he would

  667. later receive as his

  668. inheritance,

  669. obeyed and went,

  670. even though he did

  671. not know where he

  672. was going.

  673. that's interesting.

  674. You hear those

  675. words?

  676. A place he would

  677. later receive as his

  678. inheritance.

  679. Was that a mistake?

  680. You mean he didn't

  681. receive it?

  682. He died.

  683. He got the burial

  684. plot.

  685. What do you mean a

  686. place he would later

  687. receive as his

  688. inheritance?

  689. Let's keep going.

  690. Verse 9.

  691. By faith, Abraham

  692. made his home in

  693. the promised land

  694. like a stranger in

  695. a foreign country.

  696. He lived in tents

  697. as did Isaac and

  698. Jacob who were

  699. heirs with him of

  700. the same promise.

  701. For he was looking

  702. forward to the city

  703. with foundations

  704. whose architect and

  705. builder is God.

  706. the author of

  707. Hebrews is putting

  708. the emphasis here

  709. on faith.

  710. That's what he

  711. wants us to see

  712. of Abraham.

  713. His faith.

  714. By faith, he did

  715. this.

  716. And what did he do?

  717. He made his home

  718. in the promised

  719. land.

  720. Literally, he lived

  721. among the people

  722. of the promised

  723. land and he did

  724. it as a stranger

  725. in a foreign

  726. country.

  727. He lived in

  728. tents.

  729. But he was

  730. looking forward

  731. to the city

  732. with foundations

  733. whose architect

  734. and builder

  735. is God.

  736. What is the

  737. author of Hebrews

  738. saying here?

  739. He seems to be

  740. contrasting the

  741. whole tents

  742. and foreigner

  743. with city.

  744. And if you think

  745. about it, it

  746. makes sense.

  747. A tent is

  748. a temporary

  749. thing.

  750. It's not a

  751. permanent

  752. dwelling.

  753. I mean, Abraham,

  754. this is not a

  755. perfect analogy,

  756. but Abraham is

  757. like a guy who

  758. brought his camper

  759. into the Davidson

  760. campground and has

  761. been living there

  762. for half a

  763. lifetime.

  764. There's a sense

  765. of this is

  766. temporary.

  767. This is not a

  768. permanent kind

  769. of dwelling.

  770. thing.

  771. Why did Abraham

  772. pitch his tent

  773. in this country

  774. in which he was a

  775. foreigner and a

  776. stranger?

  777. That's the author

  778. of Hebrews point

  779. by faith because he

  780. believed the promise

  781. of God, which was I

  782. will give this land to

  783. you and to your

  784. offspring.

  785. God said it.

  786. I believe it.

  787. And so I'm going to

  788. pitch my tent here.

  789. It's not comfortable

  790. to be a foreigner,

  791. a stranger, to be the

  792. one that doesn't speak

  793. the native tongue, all

  794. that's involved with

  795. that, to be the guy who

  796. worships Yahweh and not

  797. Baal and these other

  798. gods who stands out like

  799. a sore thumb.

  800. But he pitched his tent

  801. there because God gave

  802. him that promise and

  803. he believed it that

  804. one day this will be

  805. my everlasting

  806. possession, this land.

  807. The author of Hebrews

  808. says he was looking

  809. forward to the city

  810. who's a city with

  811. foundations, whose

  812. architect and builder

  813. is God.

  814. And I think what we're

  815. meant to take from

  816. that is that Abraham

  817. was in faith.

  818. He heard the promise

  819. of God and he looked

  820. at the land around

  821. him and thought,

  822. look at all those

  823. cities.

  824. One day I'm going to

  825. live in the city.

  826. I'm going to be the

  827. one who has the

  828. permanent dwelling

  829. situation here.

  830. This will be my

  831. homeland and the

  832. homeland of my

  833. descendants.

  834. But how is this

  835. going to happen?

  836. These cities are

  837. already occupied by

  838. other people.

  839. I think it was very

  840. clear to Abraham that

  841. this was not something

  842. he could just bring

  843. about for himself.

  844. No, if he was to

  845. live in a city, a

  846. permanent established

  847. dwelling place in this

  848. good land, it would be

  849. God who would have to

  850. bring that about.

  851. That's what I think is

  852. meant when he says he

  853. was looking forward to

  854. the city with foundations

  855. whose architect and

  856. builder is God.

  857. He was looking for God

  858. to do it.

  859. He couldn't do that for

  860. himself.

  861. The author of Hebrews

  862. continues on in verse

  863. 13.

  864. After talking about

  865. Abraham and Sarah and

  866. the son, the

  867. offspring, he comes

  868. down in verse 13.

  869. He says, all these

  870. people were still

  871. living by faith when

  872. they died.

  873. All these people

  874. refers to Abraham,

  875. Isaac, and Jacob, who

  876. he mentioned in verse

  877. nine, and perhaps more,

  878. but at the very least

  879. those ones, they were

  880. still living by faith

  881. when they died.

  882. Right up to the day

  883. that Abraham died, he

  884. was trusting that the

  885. Lord would do the very

  886. things that he had

  887. promised.

  888. And here's the amazing

  889. statement which follows.

  890. They did not receive

  891. the things promised.

  892. You hear that?

  893. Abraham did not receive

  894. the things promised.

  895. Well, we looked at the

  896. promises and we saw

  897. that some of the things

  898. he already did receive.

  899. And so he's not

  900. talking about that.

  901. He's talking about the

  902. things that he didn't.

  903. And in this context,

  904. he's talking very

  905. specifically about the

  906. land.

  907. Back up in verse

  908. eight, a place that he

  909. would later receive as

  910. his inheritance.

  911. There's been all this

  912. reference to him as a

  913. stranger in the

  914. promised land, living

  915. in a tent rather than

  916. in a city, a permanent

  917. dwelling.

  918. He did not receive the

  919. land.

  920. And that's what we saw

  921. as we looked at

  922. Genesis.

  923. I'm going to give you

  924. this land, Abraham.

  925. Did he receive it?

  926. Abraham.

  927. The author of Hebrews

  928. helps us to just admit,

  929. no, he didn't.

  930. He got a little piece.

  931. And that's it.

  932. But even though he

  933. acknowledges that Abraham

  934. did not receive the things

  935. promised, at the same

  936. time, and back up in

  937. verse eight, he says a land,

  938. a place he would later

  939. receive as his

  940. inheritance.

  941. How does that work?

  942. How can you not receive

  943. it and yet later receive

  944. it?

  945. What's going on here?

  946. Let's continue on in

  947. verse 13 and see what the

  948. author of Hebrews says.

  949. He says, they did not

  950. receive the things

  951. promised.

  952. They only saw them and

  953. welcomed them from a

  954. distance.

  955. Admitting that they were

  956. foreigners and strangers on

  957. earth.

  958. Again here, the author of

  959. Hebrews is making the

  960. point that they had

  961. faith.

  962. Even though they didn't

  963. see in the physical sense

  964. how this would all come

  965. about, how this land would

  966. be theirs, they saw

  967. through the eyes of faith

  968. that this would be the

  969. reality.

  970. They trusted that the Lord

  971. would do exactly what he

  972. promised.

  973. They welcomed it from a

  974. distance.

  975. They knew it was for a

  976. future time.

  977. For the present, in verse

  978. 13, it says, admitting

  979. that they were foreigners

  980. and strangers.

  981. We just read that back in

  982. Abraham said to the Hittites,

  983. I'm a foreigner.

  984. I'm a stranger among you.

  985. He admitted that.

  986. What does all this mean?

  987. Verse 14, the author of

  988. Hebrews is going to make

  989. the point.

  990. He's going to draw the

  991. parallel.

  992. He says, people who say

  993. such things show that

  994. they are looking for a

  995. country of their own.

  996. If they had been thinking

  997. of the country they had

  998. left, they would have had

  999. opportunity to return.

  1000. Instead, they were longing

  1001. for a better country.

1002. So what's the lesson in

  1003. all this?

  1004. What's the principle?

1005. And I think that the author

1006. of Hebrews is trying to

1007. draw it out and make it

  1008. clear.

1009. People who say such things,

1010. who admit that they are

  1011. foreigners and stranger in

1012. the land, when God has

1013. promised that it will be

1014. their land, they show that

1015. they are looking for a

  1016. country of their own.

  1017. Literally, the word there

1018. in the original language is

  1019. a homeland.

  1020. A homeland.

  1021. That's why Abraham stayed

  1022. there.

1023. That's why he pitched his

  1024. tent there, because he

  1025. believed God's promise that

1026. this would be his homeland.

  1027. That's what God promised.

  1028. This land for an

  1029. everlasting possession for

  1030. you and your descendants.

1031. The author of Hebrews makes

  1032. the point.

1033. If he was thinking of the

1034. homeland that he came from,

1035. Ur of the Chaldeans, he had

  1036. opportunity to go back.

  1037. But he didn't.

1038. And it was evidence of his

  1039. faith.

1040. He pitched his tent here

1041. because God said, this is

1042. going to be your homeland

  1043. someday.

1044. But notice how, let's maybe

1045. just finish that thought in

  1046. verse 16.

1047. It says, instead of going

1048. back home to Ur of the

  1049. Chaldeans, they were longing

  1050. for a better homeland, a

  1051. better country.

  1052. That's why Abraham didn't

  1053. leave.

1054. He knew what was back in Ur,

1055. but it didn't compare to

1056. what God had promised he

1057. would have here in this land.

1058. And so in faith, he stayed,

1059. even though he was a

  1060. foreigner and a stranger.

1061. But as we read through this, we

  1062. notice that there's a few

1063. things in here that kind of

1064. might maybe strike us as

  1065. interesting here.

  1066. verse 16.

  1067. Instead, they were longing

  1068. for a better homeland, a

  1069. heavenly one.

  1070. Hmm.

1071. Admitting in verse 13 that

  1072. they were foreigners and

  1073. strangers on earth.

1074. He was looking forward to the

  1075. city with foundations whose

1076. architect and builder is God.

1077. And at this point, we almost

1078. wonder, is the author of

1079. Hebrews saying that Abraham was

  1080. actually heavenly minded, that

1081. he was looking not for the

  1082. land, but for heaven.

1083. Some people see that here.

1084. And if you see that here, I

1085. bless you in seeing it that

  1086. way.

  1087. That's a, it's a valid

  1088. interpretation.

1089. It's tough when we go back to

  1090. the story of Abraham.

1091. Is that what he was thinking?

  1092. I mean, everlasting possession.

1093. He believed that Isaac could be

  1094. raised from the dead.

1095. So, I mean, he, he, he believed

1096. that these kinds of things were

1097. possible, but was he thinking

1098. about heaven even back then?

  1099. I think there's another way to

  1100. read this.

1101. And I think it's really through the

1102. lens of the author of Hebrews, the

1103. point that he's trying to make.

  1104. He's, he's drawing on Abraham's

1105. life as a, as an example for

  1106. us.

1107. He's a model for us, not just

1108. him, but, but, but all the saints

1109. of old, Isaac and Jacob.

1110. They admitted that they were

1111. foreigners and strangers on earth.

1112. As it pertains to them, they

1113. admitted they were foreigners and

1114. strangers in the land, but he's

  1115. drawing out the principle.

1116. People who say such things show

1117. that they are looking for a

1118. homeland of their own, a heavenly

  1119. one.

1120. As it pertains to Abraham, he was

1121. looking for, for a homeland of his

1122. own here in Canaan, where he

  1123. pitched his tent.

1124. That's the promise that God gave.

1125. And it was a heavenly one, I think,

1126. in the sense, not that it's, it's

1127. up in the stars, it's in the place

1128. of heaven, but that the only way

1129. this homeland would come to pass is

1130. by the promise and, and the work

1131. of the God of heaven.

1132. It was God's work to, to give him

  1133. this home.

1134. Not that this place came from, from

  1135. heaven.

1136. If he was to have this land, God

1137. would have to establish it.

  1138. The God of heaven.

  1139. I think that's what's meant by a

  1140. heavenly one.

1141. As it pertains to Abraham.

1142. Did he admit that he was a

  1143. stranger on earth?

1144. That heaven was actually his real

  1145. home?

1146. I think that he admitted he was a

1147. stranger in the land that he was.

1148. But as the author of Hebrews kind of

1149. weaves this letter and points us to

1150. how we should think today and how

1151. generations of his people should

  1152. think, I think he's steering us in a

1153. bit of a different direction.

1154. Abraham, he trusted the Lord's

1155. promise about the land, the land of

  1156. Canaan.

1157. But as it pertains to us, there is

1158. something far greater that God is

  1159. doing here.

1160. If we flip over on some, you might

1161. not, it might be on the same page to

1162. verse 39 and 40, we see some, some

  1163. confirmation of this.

1164. These were all commended for their

  1165. faith.

1166. He goes through the whole, picks up

  1167. the whole list.

1168. All of these people, they were

1169. commended for their faith, yet none

1170. of them received what had been

  1171. promised.

1172. Since God had planned something

1173. better for us, so that only together

1174. with us would they be made perfect.

1175. So Abraham was promised the land.

1176. The author of Hebrews tells us he

1177. didn't receive it before he died, but

  1178. he will receive it.

1179. Only together with us, with the

1180. larger people of God throughout the

  1181. ages.

1182. God has had a bigger plan right from

  1183. the beginning.

1184. He's going to bring it all together for

1185. all the children of Abraham.

1186. And I think that's why the author

1187. Hebrews puts in these words, admitting

1188. that they were foreigners and

1189. strangers on earth, longing for a

1190. better country, a heavenly one.

1191. At the end of 16, God is not ashamed

1192. to be called their God for he has

1193. prepared a city for them.

1194. They're not going to miss out because

  1195. they died.

1196. Abraham will receive his inheritance.

1197. He will receive a city, a permanent

1198. dwelling to live in as an everlasting

  1199. possession.

  1200. He and his descendants.

1201. But God's plan was that it would come

1202. at the end, that it would come later

1203. together when all of the children of

1204. Abraham together would receive it.

1205. It will be a heavenly homeland, a

1206. homeland that God establishes for all

  1207. his people.

1208. The God of heaven brings it.

1209. It will be the city, the permanent

1210. dwelling that God builds and establishes

  1211. for his people.

1212. And the author of Hebrews goes on in

1213. this book to really steer us in that

  1214. direction.

  1215. Chapter 12, verse 22.

1216. You have come to Mount Zion, to the

1217. city of the living God, the heavenly

  1218. Jerusalem.

1219. Not the city of the earth that comes

1220. from earth, but the city that comes

  1221. from heaven.

1222. You can picture that that moment that

1223. John sees in his revelation, the new

1224. Jerusalem descending down from heaven.

1225. What is what is the author of Hebrews

  1226. saying here?

1227. His point is this to the Hebrews

1228. specifically who are going through

  1229. persecution and suffering.

1230. He's saying, hold on to the promises

1231. that God has given by faith.

1232. Hang on to them just like Abraham hung

1233. on to them to the day he died.

1234. Even though he didn't get what was

1235. promised, all of it in his lifetime, he

  1236. will.

  1237. We all will.

1238. God is going to bring that day.

1239. When he, when, when he will build this,

1240. this homeland, this place for all of his

  1241. people to dwell.

  1242. It's coming.

1243. Abraham had troubles, difficulties that he

1244. went through in his life.

1245. We have troubles and difficulties that we

1246. go through in our life.

1247. And yet Abraham chose to stick, stick it

1248. out, to plant his, to pitch his tent here

1249. because this is what the Lord promised.

  1250. We have promises too.

1251. In fact, we have the same promises as we've

1252. talked about in this series.

1253. Who are the children of the promise?

  1254. The children of Abraham.

1255. They are those who have faith in Jesus

1256. Christ, whether Jew or Gentile, slave or

  1257. free, male or female.

  1258. Hold on to them.

1259. Don't give up on them.

1260. Hold them right to the end.

1261. God is planning something wonderful.

1262. A time in which he will keep all of the

  1263. promises.

1264. From the very beginning to the very end.

1265. He has something prepared for us.

  1266. Something special.

  1267. A city.

  1268. A permanent dwelling.

1269. For now, we live in a world that just like

1270. Abraham doesn't feel like home.

1271. We feel at times as though we're strangers.

  1272. We're foreigners.

1273. We stick out like a sore thumb.

1274. People may ridicule us or mock us for our

  1275. faith.

1276. Things may not be prospering along as well

  1277. as we hoped.

  1278. There's brokenness.

1279. There's all kinds of problems in our world.

1280. But one day when Jesus returns, it won't

  1281. be that way.

1282. He will make all things new.

1283. He will make the world that we live in new.

1284. And it will be our home.

1285. Where righteousness will dwell forever.

1286. We look forward to that day.

  1287. Let's pray.

1288. Lord Jesus, we thank you.

  1289. Lord, you're coming soon.

  1290. Lord, you're coming soon.

  1291. Lord, you're coming soon.

1292. We ask that you would strengthen us in our

1293. faith in you and help us to hold on to those

1294. promises that you've given us.

  1295. Lord, you're coming soon.

  1296. We trust that.

  1297. We believe that.

1298. We want to make that known, that hope that we

1299. have to the people in this community here in

  1300. Davidson.

  1301. And so help us.

  1302. Strengthen us.

1303. Teach us to trust you just as you taught Abraham

  1304. to trust you.

1305. Teach us to live by faith.

1306. We ask this in Christ's name.

  1307. Amen.

  1308. Amen.

  1309. Amen.

  1310. Amen.

  1311. Amen.

  1312. Amen.
