  1. Well, we've begun a bit of a series working through the Gospel of John,

  2. and we kind of started it back about Christmastime,

  3. and we're still pretty close to the beginning here.

  4. So far we've seen that there's a couple things that John wants to make clear

  5. before he starts telling the story.

  6. And this morning we're actually looking forward to getting into the story,

  7. to seeing the first event that John records for us.

  8. This morning we're going to be talking about John the Baptizer.

  9. Just like in the Gospel of Mark, this is where John chooses to start the story.

  10. John has been very clear that this isn't the beginning of Jesus' story,

  11. that his story actually goes back to the very beginning.

  12. And back then he was with God and was God.

  13. But as far as the events of Jesus' story goes,

  14. this is the place that he chooses to begin with John the Baptizer.

  15. And we kind of skipped over some of those verses in verses 6 to 8 and in verse 15,

  16. so we're going to go back and look at those this morning.

  17. So I'm going to actually just start right from verse 1,

  18. and we'll read verses 1 to 9.

  19. If you have your Bible, feel free to open it up.

  20. If you're using the Pew Bibles, it's 860.

  21. John 1 verse 1, John writes this,

    John 1:1

  22. In the beginning was the Word,

  23. and the Word was with God,

  24. and the Word was God.

  25. He was with God in the beginning.

  26. Through him all things were made.

  27. Without him nothing was made that has been made.

  28. In him was life.

  29. And the life was the light of all mankind.

  30. The light shines in the darkness,

  31. and the darkness has not overcome it.

  32. There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

  33. He came as a witness to testify concerning the light,

  34. so that through him all might believe.

  35. He himself was not the light.

  36. He came only as a witness to the light.

  37. The true light that gives light to everyone

  38. was coming into the world.

  39. And so as John begins to ease us into the story of Jesus,

  40. he lets us know that there was a man named John,

  41. a different John.

  42. He's referring to John the baptizer.

  43. And this man, he says in verse 6,

  44. was sent from God.

  45. There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

  46. And John's purpose, John tells us,

  47. was to be a witness and to testify concerning the light.

  48. He came as a witness to testify concerning the light.

  49. Now what light is John referring to?

  50. We see this in the context,

  51. in what has come before and in what comes after.

  52. John is talking about the Word,

  53. who was with God and was God,

  54. even back in the beginning,

  55. before all things were made.

  56. And in verse 4 he says,

  57. in him, in the Word,

  58. was life.

  59. And the life,

  60. he actually names the Word using a different name,

  61. and the life was the light

  62. of all mankind.

  63. The light is a person.

  64. And we see that really clearly down in verse 9.

  65. He says,

  66. the true light that gives light to everyone

  67. was coming into the world.

  68. He was in the world.

  69. So the light that John came to bear witness to

  70. and to testify about was a person.

  71. And if we keep reading this all the way down,

  72. we see very clearly that it's Jesus.

  73. He is the light.

  74. John tells us that

  75. John the Baptizer came as a witness

  76. to testify concerning him

  77. so that through him

  78. all might believe.

  79. So that through John's testimony,

  80. others might hear what John is saying

  81. and come to the right conclusion

  82. about this one,

  83. Jesus,

  84. who is walking among us.

  85. John is very careful

  86. to help us avoid any confusion.

  87. In verse 8,

  88. he says,

  89. he himself was not the light.

  90. John the Baptizer,

  91. he wasn't the light.

  92. Don't make any mistake here.

  93. He came only as a witness

  94. to the light.

  95. John comes back

  96. to say a little bit more

  97. about John the Baptizer

  98. down in verse 15.

  99. And we'll read that,

  100. but we'll start it in verse 14.

  101. John writes this,

  102. The Word became flesh

  103. and made his dwelling among us.

  104. We have seen his glory,

  105. the glory of the one and only Son

  106. who came from the Father,

  107. full of grace and truth.

  108. John testified concerning him.

  109. He cried out,

  110. saying,

  111. This is the one I spoke about

  112. when I said,

  113. He who comes after me

  114. has surpassed me

  115. because he was before me.

  116. So John,

  117. the Apostle,

  118. who's writing this,

  119. makes it quite clear

  120. that John the Baptizer

  121. testified concerning Jesus,

  122. the Word,

  123. who became flesh,

  124. the Son,

  125. who came from the Father.

  126. John testified about him,

  127. and this is what he records of this.

  128. He says,

  129. He cried out,

  130. John the Baptizer cried out,

  131. saying,

  132. This is the one

  133. I spoke about

  134. when I said,

  135. He who comes after me.

  136. And he goes on.

  137. You can almost imagine

  138. John the Baptizer

  139. standing in the river

  140. or at the water's edge

  141. and maybe pointing with his hand

  142. or with his finger.

  143. This is the one.

  144. There was a time in John's ministry

  145. when his message changed.

  146. And you can see that

  147. very clearly in verse 15.

  148. His message for some time was,

  149. He who comes,

  150. there is one coming.

  151. But there came a moment

  152. where his message changed

  153. from He who comes

  154. to this is the one.

  155. This is the one right here

  156. that I spoke about earlier.

  157. Do you remember what I said?

  158. I said,

  159. He who comes after me

  160. has surpassed me

  161. because He was before me.

  162. What is John the Baptizer

  163. meaning as he says this?

  164. He who comes after me

  165. has surpassed me

  166. because He was before me.

  167. Well, ordinarily,

  168. the one who comes first

  169. is greater than the one who follows.

  170. It's not always true,

  171. but generally there's some truth to that.

  172. But John the Baptizer

  173. wants it to be known.

  174. He wants it to be clear

  175. that the one who follows Him

  176. is greater than He is.

  177. He is kind of a forerunner

  178. just because He's first,

  179. He's on the scene of ministry,

  180. attracting people's attention first

  181. doesn't mean that He's greater.

  182. In fact, we even know that

  183. from Luke's Gospel

  184. that John the Baptizer was born

  185. before Jesus was born.

  186. And so in a very true sense,

  187. Jesus came after John.

  188. But John does not want there

  189. to be any confusion,

  190. even though He appears

  191. to the crowds

  192. and is known to the crowds

  193. after me.

  194. He comes after me.

  195. He has surpassed me.

  196. He ranks higher than I

  197. because He was before me.

  198. And I think John

  199. is already beginning to point

  200. to the reality

  201. that John the Apostle

  202. has been letting us in on here,

  203. that Jesus,

  204. His story

  205. goes back

  206. to the beginning,

  207. to long before John

  208. was on the scene,

  209. to long before John

  210. was born.

  211. And so there was this moment

  212. where

  213. John's message

  214. changed

  215. from He who comes

  216. to this is the one.

  217. And we're going to get to that

  218. next Sunday.

  219. This is how

  220. the first event

  221. in John's account

  222. of things

  223. unfolds.

  224. Let's read it

  225. in verse 19.

  226. Now this was

  227. John's testimony,

  228. John the Baptizer,

  229. when the Jewish leaders

  230. in Jerusalem

  231. sent priests

  232. and Levites

  233. to ask Him

  234. who He was.

  235. He did not fail

  236. to confess,

  237. but confessed freely,

  238. I am not

  239. the Messiah.

  240. They asked Him,

  241. Then who are you?

  242. Are you Elijah?

  243. He said,

  244. I am not.

  245. Are you the prophet?

  246. He answered,

  247. No.

  248. Finally,

  249. they said,

  250. Who are you?

  251. Give us an answer

  252. to take back

  253. to those who sent us.

  254. What do you say

  255. about yourself?

  256. John replied

  257. in the words

  258. of Isaiah the prophet,

  259. I am the voice

  260. of one

  261. calling in the wilderness.

  262. Make straight

  263. the way

  264. for the Lord.

  265. So,

  266. here John is

  267. out at the river.

  268. He's teaching.

  269. He's preaching.

  270. He's baptizing people.

  271. people.

  272. And the Jewish leaders

  273. in Jerusalem

  274. catch word of this.

  275. And as we know

  276. from the scriptures,

  277. they kind of saw

  278. themselves as

  279. the spiritual authority

  280. of the nation,

  281. of the people.

  282. And so naturally,

  283. they need to send

  284. someone out.

  285. They need to do

  286. something

  287. about this guy

  288. who's out there

  289. in the middle

  290. of nowhere

  291. preaching,

  292. teaching,

  293. kind of administering

  294. religious rights.

  295. And so what do they do?

  296. They put together

  297. a delegation.

  298. They send some priests

  299. and some Levites

  300. and as we see

  301. in verse 24,

  302. some Pharisees

  303. were among them

  304. and they send

  305. them out

  306. to John

  307. at the river

  308. to ask him,

  309. who are you?

  310. What are you up to?

  311. What are you doing here?

  312. Verse 20,

  313. again,

  314. John,

  315. the one writing this,

  316. makes it crystal clear.

  317. John the baptizer

  318. did not fail

  319. to confess

  320. but confessed freely,

  321. I am not

  322. the Messiah.

  323. That was kind of

  324. the thoughts

  325. rolling around

  326. in some people's minds.

  327. Who is this guy

  328. out there?

  329. Is he the Christ?

  330. The one that we've

  331. been waiting for,

  332. God's promised king.

  333. John the baptizer

  334. made it crystal clear,

  335. I am not.

  336. I am not

  337. the Messiah.

  338. So they asked him,

  339. who are you?

  340. Are you Elijah?

  341. Why did they ask him

  342. if he was Elijah?

  343. It's kind of a strange

  344. question.

  345. Those of you

  346. who have read,

  347. spent some time

  348. in the Old Testament

  349. might know that

  350. the Israelites

  351. have not heard

  352. from the prophets

  353. in a long time.

  354. There's been no word

  355. from them.

  356. The last prophet

  357. that they heard from

  358. was the prophet Malachi.

  359. And these

  360. are the words

  361. that Malachi

  362. said

  363. that are written

  364. down for us,

  365. the very last

  366. words in his

  367. book.

  368. See,

  369. I will send

  370. the prophet Elijah

  371. to you

  372. before that great

  373. and dreadful

  374. day of the Lord

  375. comes.

  376. Elijah had already

  377. walked the earth,

  378. I think,

  379. about 400 years

  380. before this,

  381. when Malachi

  382. is saying this.

  383. And if you remember

  384. his story,

  385. he didn't die,

  386. he was taken up

  387. in a whirlwind

  388. amidst chariots

  389. of fire.

  390. But now

  391. the prophet Malachi

  392. 400 years later

  393. has said,

  394. see,

  395. I will send

  396. the prophet Elijah

  397. to you

  398. before that great

  399. and dreadful

  400. day of the Lord

  401. comes.

  402. And so

  403. the people

  404. have some

  405. sense of anticipation

  406. because of this

  407. word from the Lord

  408. through Malachi.

  409. Maybe this guy

  410. out in the wilderness

  411. is Elijah.

  412. Just as the Lord's

  413. word has said,

  414. are you Elijah?

  415. I am not,

  416. said John.

  417. I'm not the guy

  418. spoken of there.

  419. Are you the prophet?

  420. Are you the prophet?

  421. And notice that

  422. it's the prophet

  423. and not a prophet.

  424. Are you the prophet?

  425. Who are they

  426. referring to?

  427. Back in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 18 chapter mention

  428. chapter 18,

  429. Moses spoke

  430. of a coming prophet.

  431. This is what he said.

  432. The Lord your God

  433. will raise up for you

  434. a prophet like me

  435. from among you,

  436. from your fellow

  437. Israelites.

  438. You must listen

  439. to him.

  440. And Moses,

  441. he writes this,

  442. the Lord said to me,

  443. I will raise up

  444. for them a prophet

  445. like you

  446. from among their

  447. fellow Israelites

  448. and I will put

  449. my words

  450. in his mouth.

  451. He will tell them

  452. everything

  453. I command him.

  454. this was

  455. the prophet

  456. that they were

  457. looking forward to

  458. because as far as

  459. they were concerned,

  460. he hadn't come yet.

  461. Are you that one?

  462. They asked John.

  463. No.

  464. I'm not.

  465. Finally,

  466. it almost seems

  467. that they get frustrated.

  468. Well,

  469. who are you?

  470. I mean,

  471. we've come all

  472. the way out here.

  473. We've got to give

  474. some kind of an answer

  475. to those who sent us.

  476. So,

  477. what do you say

  478. for yourself?

  479. Who would you say

  480. that you are,

  481. John?

  482. And this is what

  483. John says.

  484. He says,

  485. I am the voice

  486. of one

  487. calling

  488. in the wilderness.

  489. Make

  490. straight

  491. the way

  492. for the Lord.

  493. John takes

  494. up the words

  495. of Isaiah,

  496. the prophet,

  497. as if

  498. he himself

  499. is the one

  500. spoken of

  501. by Isaiah.

  502. I am

  503. the voice.

  504. I'm out here

  505. in the wilderness

  506. and I'm calling

  507. and my message

  508. is this.

  509. Make

  510. straight

  511. the way

  512. for the Lord.

  513. I get

  514. chills

  515. just thinking

  516. about John

  517. saying those

  518. words

  519. as he's

  520. out there

  521. having this

  522. face-to-face

  523. with them.

  524. We can't

  525. see this

  526. in

  527. our English

  528. translations

  529. here in

  530. John,

  531. but if we go

  532. back to those

  533. words that

  534. John is

  535. quoting,

  536. we can see

  537. it very

  538. clearly.

  539. It's

  540. make

  541. straight

  542. the way

  543. for

  544. the Lord.

  545. As in

  546. the name

  547. of God,

  548. the divine

  549. name,

  550. the Lord,

  551. Yahweh,

  552. make

  553. straight

  554. the way

  555. for Yahweh,

  556. for God

  557. himself.

  558. Get

  559. ready.

  560. God

  561. is

  562. coming.

  563. Make

  564. the path

  565. straight

  566. for him.

  567. he's

  568. coming.

  569. This is

  570. who I

  571. am.

  572. I'm the

  573. guy who

  574. has been

  575. sent to

  576. announce

  577. this,

  578. to get

  579. people ready

  580. for his

  581. coming.

  582. Whether

  583. this really

  584. struck a

  585. chord in

  586. the hearts

  587. of the

  588. religious

  589. leaders or

  590. not,

  591. we don't

  592. know.

  593. but in

  594. verse 24

  595. we find

  596. out what

  597. else was

  598. said there.

  599. The

  600. Pharisees,

  601. verse 24,

  602. now the

  603. Pharisees who

  604. had been

  605. sent

  606. questioned

  607. John,

  608. why then

  609. do you

  610. baptize

  611. if you

  612. are not

  613. the

  614. Messiah,

  615. nor

  616. Elijah,

  617. nor the

  618. prophet?

  619. And there's

  620. a bit of a

  621. sense of a

  622. challenge here

  623. almost in

  624. this.

  625. So why are

  626. you doing

  627. this?

  628. Why are

  629. you baptizing

  630. if you're

  631. not the

  632. Messiah,

  633. the prophet,

  634. or Elijah?

  635. If you're

  636. none of

  637. these big

  638. three,

  639. then who

  640. are you

  641. and what

  642. are you

  643. doing here?

  644. Who gave

  645. you authority

  646. to be doing

  647. this?

  648. This is

  649. John's answer

  650. in verse 26.

  651. He says,

  652. I baptize

  653. with water,

  654. John replied,

  655. but among

  656. you stands

  657. one you

  658. do not

  659. know.

  660. He is

  661. the one

  662. who comes

  663. after me,

  664. the straps

  665. of whose

  666. sandals I

  667. am not

  668. worthy

  669. to untie.

  670. John's

  671. answer

  672. is

  673. remarkable.

  674. You're

  675. asking me

  676. what I'm

  677. doing

  678. baptizing.

  679. Here I

  680. am,

  681. baptizing

  682. people in

  683. the water,

  684. but right

  685. now there

  686. is one

  687. who stands

  688. among you,

  689. the one

  690. that I

  691. have been

  692. sent to

  693. testify about.

  694. You don't

  695. know him,

  696. you haven't

  697. seen him

  698. yet,

  699. but right

  700. now here

  701. he stands

  702. among you.

  703. And this

  704. one who

  705. comes after

  706. me,

  707. I'm not

  708. even

  709. worthy

  710. to bend

  711. down before

  712. him and

  713. untie his

  714. shoes.

  715. What an

  716. amazing

  717. thing for

  718. John to

  719. say.

  720. John knows

  721. who he has

  722. come to

  723. testify about.

  724. God,

  725. he has

  726. come to

  727. tell people

  728. to get

  729. ready because

  730. the Lord

  731. is coming.

  732. Yahweh,

  733. God is

  734. coming.

  735. That's who

  736. this one

  737. is.

  738. That's why

  739. John says,

  740. I'm not even

  741. worthy to

  742. bend down

  743. and untie

  744. his shoes.

  745. He has a

  746. sense already

  747. of just

  748. how worthy

  749. Jesus is.

  750. He's the

  751. one who

  752. was before

  753. me.

  754. He's,

  755. he ranks

  756. higher than

  757. I.

  758. He is so

  759. much greater

  760. than me.

  761. I'm here

  762. like a

  763. forerunner.

  764. I'm here

  765. like a

  766. guy to

  767. get people

  768. ready

  769. for his

  770. coming.

  771. this is

  772. how the

  773. story of

  774. Jesus

  775. begins

  776. according to

  777. John and

  778. we're going

  779. to hear

  780. more next

  781. Sunday

  782. about

  783. Jesus as

  784. he comes

  785. on the

  786. scene for

  787. the first

  788. time in

  789. all of

  790. this.

  791. But as

  792. I was

  793. thinking about

  794. this this

  795. week,

  796. the thing

  797. that really

  798. struck my

  799. heart was

  800. just that

  801. attitude of

  802. humility that

  803. John the

  804. baptizer had

  805. that sense

  806. of awe

  807. that he had

  808. about the

  809. one who

  810. was coming.

  811. He hadn't

  812. even seen

  813. him face to

  814. face yet.

  815. And yet he

  816. knew this

  817. one,

  818. this one is

  819. special.

  820. He is the

  821. Lord.

  822. Lord.

  823. He is

  824. greater than

  825. I.

  826. I'm not

  827. even worthy

  828. to bend

  829. down and

  830. be in his

  831. presence to

  832. untie his

  833. shoes to

  834. serve him in

  835. the most

  836. menial of

  837. ways.

  838. And then to

  839. think that

  840. not too much

  841. later Jesus

  842. will come

  843. walking along.

  844. this is the

  845. attitude that

  846. John had

  847. towards this

  848. person who

  849. who looked

  850. just like

  851. one of us

  852. to the

  853. eye.

  854. And the

  855. thing that

  856. I felt

  857. I just

  858. needed to

  859. really reflect

  860. on is,

  861. is that my

  862. attitude

  863. towards the

  864. Lord?

  865. This one who

  866. is so worthy,

  867. so great,

  868. that I'm

  869. not even

  870. worthy to

  871. serve him

  872. in the

  873. smallest of

  874. ways.

  875. For he

  876. is the

  877. Lord.

  878. He is

  879. God.

  880. What would

  881. our church

  882. look like if

  883. more of that

  884. awe and

  885. humility were

  886. present in

  887. each one of

  888. us?

  889. Last Sunday,

  890. I encouraged

  891. us to make

  892. it our

  893. prayer and

  894. our longing

  895. for this

  896. entire year

  897. that we

  898. would see

  899. more of

  900. God's

  901. glory,

  902. specifically

  903. the glory

  904. of Jesus,

  905. because that's

  906. what John

  907. said.

  908. He said,

  909. we have

  910. seen his

  911. glory.

  912. John gives

  913. us a glimpse

  914. of just how

  915. glorious this

  916. one is,

  917. even before

  918. he saw

  919. him.

  920. And my

  921. hope and my

  922. prayer is that

  923. as we go

  924. through,

  925. not only this

  926. week, but

  927. this whole

  928. year, that

  929. we would

  930. come to

  931. know Christ,

  932. the Lord

  933. Jesus, more

  934. and more for

  935. who he is,

  936. and that as

  937. we do, this

  938. kind of an

  939. awe and

  940. humility that

  941. John had

  942. would be

  943. present, would

  944. grow in our

  945. hearts.

  946. And that as

  947. it does, that

  948. would spill over

  949. and out into

  950. all of our

  951. connections with

  952. other people,

  953. that they

  954. would see that

  955. we are a

  956. people who

  957. truly have

  958. awe, see

  959. someone that

  960. we don't see

  961. now as

  962. glorious.

  963. What a

  964. testimony to

  965. this community

  966. that would

  967. be.

  968. Let's pray.

  969. Father in

  970. heaven, we

  971. do ask you

  972. now as

  973. we've heard

  974. your word, we

  975. ask that you

  976. would work

  977. in our

  978. hearts this

  979. kind of awe

  980. and humility

  981. that we see

  982. in John.

  983. He had a

  984. right view of

  985. you.

  986. And Lord, we

  987. confess so

  988. often we come

  989. to you

  990. cavalierly.

  991. We just

  992. throw up some

  993. prayers and

  994. we don't

  995. really have

  996. that sense

  997. of awe as

  998. we approach,

  999. that sense

  1000. of who

  1001. you truly

  1002. are.

  1003. You are

  1004. the one

  1005. who was

  1006. with God

  1007. and was

  1008. God in

  1009. the beginning

  1010. and through

  1011. you all

  1012. things were

  1013. made.

  1014. Fill our

  1015. hearts with

  1016. awe.

  1017. Teach us

  1018. to fear you

  1019. the way

  1020. that you

  1021. deserve

  1022. for your

  1023. glory.

  1024. We ask

  1025. this in

  1026. Christ's

  1027. name.

  1028. Amen.

  1029. Amen.

  1030. Amen.

  1031. Amen.

  1032. Amen.
