  1. If you have your Bible with you, please open it up to the Gospel of John.

  2. The Gospel of John.

  3. If you're using the Pew Bible, it's about page 860.

  4. Well, we've been journeying through the Gospel of John.

  5. We've started the journey.

  6. We're still very much at the beginning.

  7. We've seen and read some wonderful things.

  8. John has begun by telling us just who Jesus is, that he's more than just a man.

  9. He is the Word who was God and was with God at the very beginning.

  10. Through him all things were made.

  11. He became flesh and he has come to live among us.

  12. We heard from John about how Jesus first began to be known by the public.

  13. We heard about John the Baptizer declaring out at the Jordan River,

  14. This is the one.

  15. Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

  16. We saw last Sunday how some of Jesus' first disciples began to follow him.

  17. And what they very quickly began to say about who he was.

  18. And John has set some pretty high expectations for us as he has begun to tell us the story of Jesus.

  19. You'll remember that John said back in verse 14 of chapter 1,

  20. We saw his glory.

  21. Glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  22. And so it's right about now that we're starting to wonder,

  23. Well, when did the miracles start?

  24. When did the signs and wonders start happening?

  25. That's exactly what John is about to tell us this morning.

  26. We're going to look at the first of Jesus' signs, as John refers to them.

  27. And John makes it very clear right from the get-go.

  28. Not actually right from the get-go, but later on in his gospel.

  29. He makes it very clear as to why he's telling us this.

  30. He's not just here to tell us the next thing that happened in Jesus' story.

  31. In John 20, verses 30 and 31, John writes this,

    John 20:30

  32. Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples,

  33. which are not recorded in this book.

  34. But these, the ones that I've written down here in my account,

  35. are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah,

  36. the Son of God.

  37. And that by believing, you may have life in his name.

  38. So what is the first sign that Jesus did?

  39. And how did it all happen?

  40. We're reading from John chapter 2.

    John 2 chapter mention

  41. John chapter 2, verse 1.

    John 2 chapter mention

  42. On the third day, a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.

  43. Jesus' mother was there.

  44. And Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.

  45. So this takes place very quickly after Nathaniel's introduction to Jesus,

  46. which we heard about last Sunday.

  47. It's about two days from that day.

  48. And it takes place in Cana.

  49. A small town, a small village.

  50. This was the place where Nathaniel was from.

  51. And the occasion is a wedding.

  52. The celebration of a marriage.

  53. And probably the ceremony too.

  54. And who was there?

  55. John tells us Jesus' mother was there.

  56. But not only her, Jesus himself and his disciples had also been invited to this wedding.

  57. So there's a little bit of traveling that's going on here to come to Cana for this celebration.

  58. Now weddings in that culture and time were not quite the same as they are in our culture and time.

  59. Typically, they wouldn't just do a one-day thing, but they would do a whole week.

  60. It was a ceremony and then the rest of the week spent in celebration.

  61. In banquets and eating and drinking together.

  62. It was a very joyous occasion.

  63. And the thing that sets this wedding apart, or begins to set it apart, there was a problem.

  64. We read in verse 3,

  65. When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him,

  66. They have no more wine.

  67. So in the middle of their festivities, their celebration,

  68. We don't know exactly what day of the celebration it happened on.

  69. But at some point, they run out of the staple drink for the celebration.

  70. They run out of wine.

  71. And if we read this story closely again and again,

  72. We probably see, the sense we get is that probably Mary was one of the first to know about it.

  73. The rest of the guests haven't yet heard that this has happened.

  74. And this is a big deal.

  75. And so, what does Mary do?

  76. She comes to Jesus and she lets him know.

  77. They have no more wine.

  78. And we gather from Jesus' response right after this that Mary's not just making a statement.

  79. She's kind of hoping or expecting that Jesus might do something here.

  80. We don't know for sure what she expected.

  81. Did she expect Jesus to do a miracle?

  82. This was the first of his signs.

  83. So we don't even know if Jesus did a whole bunch of miracles before this.

  84. But probably Jesus had seen her and the family through a few interesting situations

  85. and had always been very reliable.

  86. Just knew what to do.

  87. He had wisdom in those kinds of situations.

  88. And so, perhaps she was looking for Jesus to do something or to say something.

  89. They have no more wine.

  90. What is Jesus' response?

  91. He says,

  92. Woman, why do you involve me?

  93. My hour has not yet come.

  94. Now, we have to be careful here that we don't read kind of the way that we would read this in our culture back into them.

  95. There's a lot of discussion over, you know, what Jesus meant by these things.

  96. Especially the word woman.

  97. But one thing that we do know for sure is that Jesus meant no disrespect by addressing her that way.

  98. In fact, he will address her again that way from the cross.

  99. In a moment where he is showing the utmost of care and concern for her well-being.

  100. So he doesn't mean this rudely or disrespectfully.

  101. This is likely just a thing that's lost on us because of language and culture.

  102. But the question which follows, a lot of people are scratching their heads over this.

  103. Literally, it's, what to you and what to me and to you?

  104. And the verb isn't even in there.

  105. I mean, it's kind of left to us to just understand it.

  106. But my Bible translates it as, why do you involve me?

  107. Some say, what is that to me and to you that they've run out of wine?

  108. You know, like that's not really our issue.

  109. What exactly the sense is, I'm not sure.

  110. Some think that perhaps Jesus is rebuking Mary.

  111. You know, and the idea here is, you know, it's not really appropriate.

  112. Or it's not really your place to, you know, try to direct me in this manner.

  113. Others think that maybe Jesus, this has to do with his role.

  114. Both Mary and Jesus know who he is.

  115. But there's a sense, perhaps, in which, you know,

  116. I'm not here to just use supernatural power to fix every little problem.

  117. We're not sure exactly what Jesus meant.

  118. But it seems in one sense as though he's, you know, he's kind of distancing himself in this moment.

  119. You know, like, whose problem is this?

  120. Is this something that I have, that I need to fix?

  121. Is it that Mary was expecting him to do something great?

  122. And Jesus is saying, you know, this isn't the right moment for this.

  123. A lot of question over what Jesus means by my hour has not yet come.

  124. Again, we're not 100% sure.

  125. It seems that Jesus has some sort of sense of timing and how his days are about to unfold.

  126. Perhaps he means something to the effect of, you know,

  127. to do something that would draw people's attention to myself here and now.

  128. It would be out of order.

  129. It's not the right time.

  130. Like, he will do later great miracles and feed thousands.

  131. And everybody will see it.

  132. His mother's response is very interesting.

  133. Because, at least when I read what Jesus said,

  134. Why do you involve me?

  135. My hour has not yet come.

  136. I don't, I wouldn't take that as a yes.

  137. But it seems as though Mary's thinking,

  138. Well, he didn't say no.

  139. He didn't say no.

  140. Servants, come here.

  141. Do whatever he tells you to do.

  142. You know, you get the sense that Mary almost just volunteers him in that moment.

  143. That he's been voluntold by his mother.

  144. And I love the confidence that Mary expresses about Jesus.

  145. It kind of comes out in the original.

  146. Whatever he tells you, do it.

  147. You know, it doesn't matter what it is.

  148. Just listen to him.

  149. He's going to look after this.

  150. He's going to help us.

  151. It's going to be good.

  152. Jesus graciously decides to help.

  153. But before we get to that, let's just consider for a moment

  154. the gravity of this problem.

  155. I mean, this kind of the question here is,

  156. Whose problem is this?

  157. It's not Jesus' problem.

  158. It's not Mary's problem.

  159. It's the family's problem.

  160. In this culture, it was the responsibility of the bridegroom

  161. and his family or his party to provide the food and drink

  162. for the guests, for the celebration.

  163. And whatever happened, we don't know,

  164. but they've run short on the wine.

  165. So, just to help us think for a moment

  166. of what this might have felt like.

  167. I mean, put yourself in their shoes a little bit.

  168. Think about you're having a big gathering,

  169. not a family gathering, a big gathering at your house.

  170. A whole bunch of people coming over for supper.

  171. It's kind of an open invitation.

  172. You don't know who all is going to come

  173. or how many is going to be there.

  174. You're serving chicken.

  175. That's going to be kind of the main part on the plate

  176. and some other sides things, some salads and stuff like that.

  177. And at the last minute,

  178. a whole bunch more people than you expected

  179. or thought would come show up for supper.

  180. And you're there kind of, you know, at the table

  181. watching as the people file through buffet style.

  182. They're, you know, they're each taking a piece of chicken

  183. onto their plate and you're watching

  184. as it gets lower and lower and lower.

  185. And then all of a sudden, the last piece of chicken is gone

  186. and there's still five people standing in line.

  187. How are you feeling in that moment?

  188. I mean, here's five guests

  189. who are not even going to get a little bit

  190. or some of the main thing of the meal.

  191. And they're kind of like eyeing the salads

  192. and like, I guess I'll just pile up a lot of that.

  193. And, you know, you would feel terrible.

  194. You'd be embarrassed.

  195. Oh, if I'd only picked up a little bit more,

  196. cooked a little bit more.

  197. And that's just a gathering in the home.

  198. Think about how much more significant this is.

  199. This is a wedding.

  200. You have guests that have traveled

  201. from other towns and villages to be there.

  202. This is a big deal.

  203. This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment,

  204. a special occasion celebrating the marriage

  205. of this man and woman.

  206. How embarrassing to have run out of wine

  207. before the celebrations are even over.

  208. Can you imagine having to get up

  209. in front of all this crowd of people

  210. and say, I'm sorry,

  211. but there is no more wine to drink.

  212. We do have water.

  213. This would not have been a fun moment.

  214. It would have been a huge detractor

  215. from the joyful celebration,

  216. from the focus on honoring the bride and the groom.

  217. And so Jesus' mother comes to him

  218. and says,

  219. they have no more wine.

  220. She volunteers him in a sense

  221. and he graciously decides to act,

  222. to do something to help

  223. in this moment of need.

  224. Verse six.

  225. Nearby stood six stone water jars,

  226. the kind used by the Jews

  227. for ceremonial washing,

  228. each holding from 20 to 30 gallons.

  229. Jesus said to the servants,

  230. fill the jars with water.

  231. So they filled them to the brim.

  232. Then he told them,

  233. now draw some out

  234. and take it to the master of the banquet.

  235. So they,

  236. you get the sense that

  237. as this conversation's happening

  238. between Jesus and his mother,

  239. maybe they're kind of back

  240. towards the kitchen area.

  241. We don't know exactly.

  242. But there,

  243. standing there,

  244. are six stone jars of water.

  245. And I was going to bring up

  246. one of those garbage cans

  247. from downstairs,

  248. about that size in volume.

  249. 20 to 30 gallons,

  250. you know,

  251. could fit a couple big bags

  252. of garbage in them.

  253. But they were,

  254. they were,

  255. they were made of stone.

  256. So likely really heavy,

  257. not the kind of thing

  258. that you just pick up

  259. and carry around.

  260. Probably something

  261. that would have involved

  262. multiple trips

  263. with smaller containers

  264. to the well

  265. and back,

  266. to the well and back

  267. to fill these things up.

  268. They were used for

  269. ceremonial washing.

  270. And there's six of them there.

  271. Jesus says,

  272. fill them with water.

  273. Now imagine what the servants

  274. are thinking

  275. in this moment

  276. as they're doing this.

  277. So we've run out of wine

  278. and he wants us to fill up

  279. these six jars

  280. with water.

  281. Like,

  282. how is this going to work?

  283. They're thinking

  284. as they're going back

  285. and forth to the well,

  286. you know,

  287. they're filling it,

  288. they're kind of looking at him

  289. and like,

  290. is he going to mix

  291. some kind of cocktail

  292. or something here?

  293. He's not throwing

  294. anything in here.

  295. Like,

  296. what is this?

  297. And they just keep filling

  298. and filling and filling

  299. until all six jars

  300. are full to the brim,

  301. it says.

  302. Now it's in between

  303. verse seven and eight here.

  304. Right after they finish

  305. filling him,

  306. sometime between there

  307. and what happens next,

  308. that Jesus does

  309. something amazing.

  310. He does a miracle.

  311. And if we look ahead,

  312. just cheat a little bit

  313. and go into verse nine,

  314. they're about to take

  315. a sample of

  316. this liquid

  317. from the jars

  318. to the master of the banquet

  319. for a taste test.

  320. And what does it say

  321. in verse nine?

  322. It says,

  323. the master of the banquet

  324. tasted the water

  325. that had been turned

  326. into wine.

  327. So if we kind of,

  328. you know,

  329. I think

  330. we assume that

  331. this kind of happens

  332. somewhere in between

  333. verses seven and eight.

  334. The jars had been

  335. filled to the brim

  336. and before they had

  337. drawn some out

  338. to take it

  339. to the master

  340. of the banquet

  341. for this taste test,

  342. Jesus did something.

  343. The water

  344. was turned

  345. into wine.

  346. I wish I could have

  347. been there

  348. to just see

  349. what did he do?

  350. How did it happen?

  351. What did the servants

  352. and the disciples

  353. notice?

  354. Did they see

  355. the color change?

  356. of the water

  357. in the jar?

  358. Did they,

  359. did all of a sudden

  360. what they were smelling

  361. change?

  362. Did they,

  363. could they smell

  364. that it was wine?

  365. We don't know.

  366. He did something though.

  367. And then it comes

  368. to this moment.

  369. Jesus says,

  370. now,

  371. now draw some out

  372. and take it

  373. to the master

  374. of the banquet

  375. for a taste test.

  376. So,

  377. you know,

  378. we imagine

  379. here they are.

  380. They're,

  381. you know,

  382. they're,

  383. they're kind of

  384. looking at Jesus funny.

  385. They're,

  386. they're,

  387. they've got the ladle

  388. in there.

  389. They're filling up

  390. the cup

  391. and then their eyes

  392. are going wide

  393. as they're watching

  394. it pour into the cup.

  395. Perhaps the color

  396. was different already.

  397. You know,

  398. they're kind of,

  399. you can just imagine

  400. them like,

  401. what is going on here?

  402. Like,

  403. it doesn't smell

  404. like water.

  405. What was going

  406. through their minds

  407. as they're,

  408. as they take this

  409. to the master

  410. of the banquet?

  411. Like,

  412. this is

  413. weird.

  414. Can you imagine

  415. their faces

  416. in that moment

  417. as they offer it

  418. to him?

  419. And he takes

  420. the cup

  421. out of their hands

  422. and they're kind

  423. of wondering like,

  424. well,

  425. what's going

  426. to happen here?

  427. What?

  428. He lifts it up

  429. to his lips

  430. for a drink

  431. and they're just

  432. watching,

  433. you know,

  434. what does it

  435. taste like?

  436. What a moment.

  437. The master

  438. of the banquet

  439. tastes

  440. the water

  441. that had been

  442. turned into wine

  443. and the first thing

  444. it says

  445. in verse nine

  446. after he does,

  447. it says,

  448. he did not realize

  449. where it had come from.

  450. You know,

  451. the question is,

  452. where did that

  453. come from?

  454. I thought we were

  455. almost out.

  456. Where'd you guys

  457. get that from?

  458. I don't know

  459. what the servants

  460. said.

  461. I don't know

  462. what Jesus told

  463. the servants

  464. to say.

  465. is there more?

  466. Yeah,

  467. there's about,

  468. you know,

  469. five to seven

  470. hundred liters

  471. more where that

  472. came from.

  473. You know,

  474. they knew where

  475. it came from.

  476. It says

  477. in verse nine,

  478. so after he

  479. tastes this

  480. water,

  481. which had become

  482. wine,

  483. it says in verse nine,

  484. then he called

  485. the bridegroom

  486. aside

  487. and he said,

  488. everyone brings

  489. out the choice

  490. wine first

  491. and then the

  492. cheaper wine

  493. after the guests

  494. have had too

  495. much to drink.

  496. In other words,

  497. when they can't

  498. really tell the

  499. difference

  500. because they're

  501. inebriated.

  502. but you

  503. have saved

  504. the best

  505. till now.

  506. He commends

  507. the bridegroom.

  508. In other words,

  509. he doesn't know

  510. where the wine

  511. came from.

  512. He still doesn't

  513. know.

  514. The servants

  515. didn't tell him.

  516. Maybe Jesus

  517. told them not

  518. to say

  519. or told them

  520. what to say.

  521. They didn't

  522. know.

  523. He didn't know

  524. where it came

  525. from.

  526. He thought

  527. the bridegroom

  528. had made

  529. some kind

  530. of arrangement

  531. or something

  532. to,

  533. you know,

  534. to pull

  535. the good

  536. stuff out

  537. at the end.

  538. But I love

  539. what he says.

  540. There's so much

  541. wrapped up

  542. in this little

  543. comment that

  544. he makes

  545. to the

  546. bridegroom.

  547. You know,

  548. it's like

  549. the normal

  550. way of things

  551. would be to

  552. bring out

  553. the really

  554. good stuff

  555. at the beginning.

  556. I thought

  557. that we were

  558. drinking that.

  559. But now,

  560. this stuff,

  561. this is way

  562. better.

  563. This is the

  564. good stuff.

  565. Like,

  566. that stuff

  567. was good,

  568. but wow.

  569. Can you

  570. imagine what

  571. the bridegroom

  572. is thinking

  573. in that moment?

  574. Like,

  575. well,

  576. thank you.

  577. We don't

  578. know.

  579. Not only

  580. does Jesus

  581. turn water

  582. into wine,

  583. but he

  584. turns water

  585. into better

  586. wine.

  587. than the

  588. good stuff

  589. that they

  590. had already

  591. been drinking.

  592. And 500

  593. to about

  594. 700

  595. liters of

  596. it in

  597. six different

  598. jars in

  599. an instant

  600. in front of

  601. the eyes of

  602. the servants

  603. and his

  604. disciples.

  605. An amazing

  606. thing.

  607. There's no

  608. other explanation

  609. for it.

  610. It was a

  611. miracle of

  612. God.

  613. Only God

  614. could do

  615. this.

  616. how does

  617. John

  618. summarize

  619. this whole

  620. story?

  621. In

  622. verse 11,

  623. this is

  624. what he

  625. says.

  626. What Jesus

  627. did here

  628. in Cana

  629. of Galilee

  630. was the

  631. first of

  632. the signs

  633. through which

  634. he revealed

  635. his glory

  636. and his

  637. disciples

  638. believed in

  639. him.

  640. So as

  641. we saw

  642. at the

  643. beginning

  644. back in

  645. John

    John 20 chapter mention

  646. chapter

  647. 20,

  648. Jesus

  649. did lots

  650. of signs

  651. more than

  652. are recorded

  653. in this

  654. book.

  655. These are

  656. written so

  657. that you

  658. may believe.

  659. And that's

  660. what happened

  661. in this

  662. moment.

  663. Jesus'

  664. disciples,

  665. they saw.

  666. they saw

  667. the sign,

  668. they saw

  669. the miracle

  670. and they

  671. took it

  672. as

  673. confirmation.

  674. Yes,

  675. he is

  676. the one.

  677. He is

  678. the Messiah.

  679. He is

  680. the King

  681. of Israel.

  682. He is

  683. the Son

  684. of God.

  685. How else

  686. could this

  687. happen?

  688. John also

  689. says

  690. that it

  691. was through

  692. this sign,

  693. this is

  694. the first

  695. of them,

  696. but it

  697. was through

  698. this one

  699. and others

  700. that Jesus

  701. revealed

  702. his glory.

  703. We saw

  704. his glory

  705. that day

  706. at the

  707. wedding

  708. in Cana.

  709. So what

  710. did they

  711. see

  712. of his

  713. glory?

  714. What was

  715. so glorious

  716. about Jesus

  717. that day

  718. at the

  719. wedding?

  720. Well,

  721. I think

  722. the obvious

  723. answer

  724. is

  725. his

  726. divine

  727. power.

  728. They saw

  729. something

  730. of the

  731. power

  732. of God

  733. at work

  734. in that

  735. moment.

  736. Amazing.

  737. But what

  738. else?

  739. What else

  740. did they

  741. see of

  742. his glory?

  743. If we

  744. think back

  745. to chapter

  746. 1,

  747. verse 14,

  748. where John

  749. says we

  750. saw his

  751. glory,

  752. glory,

  753. he

  754. describes

  755. or he

  756. kind of

  757. fills in

  758. what that

  759. looks like.

  760. He says

  761. we saw

  762. that he

  763. was full

  764. of grace

  765. and truth.

  766. grace or

  767. graciousness

  768. of Jesus

  769. here at

  770. the wedding?

  771. God

  772. I think

  773. there's a

  774. number of

  775. ways.

  776. For

  777. starters,

  778. Jesus

  779. has

  780. the power

  781. of God

  782. to do

  783. this great

  784. miracle,

  785. but he

  786. does not

  787. act for

  788. his own

  789. sake,

  790. but for

  791. the sake

  792. of others.

  793. He made

  794. the wine

  795. for the

  796. guests,

  797. for the

  798. bride,

  799. for the

  800. bridegroom.

  801. He didn't

  802. use that

  803. power for

  804. himself,

  805. for his

  806. own sake,

  807. but it

  808. was for

  809. others.

  810. This is

  811. a gift.

  812. We see

  813. his grace

  814. in that.

  815. We also

  816. see his

  817. grace or

  818. his

  819. graciousness

  820. in how

  821. he goes

  822. above and

  823. beyond.

  824. I mean,

  825. let's put

  826. this into

  827. perspective.

  828. Do we

  829. really need

  830. wine to

  831. celebrate at

  832. the wedding?

  833. Is it

  834. essential?

  835. No,

  836. it's not.

  837. Paul will

  838. go on to

  839. say in

  840. his letter

  841. to the

  842. church at

  843. Rome,

  844. the kingdom

  845. of God

  846. is not a

  847. matter of

  848. eating and

  849. drinking,

  850. but of

  851. righteousness

  852. and peace

  853. and joy

  854. in the

  855. Holy Spirit.

  856. They didn't

  857. need the

  858. wine,

  859. but Jesus

  860. does it

  861. anyway.

  862. He gives

  863. them not

  864. just what

  865. they need,

  866. but something

  867. that would

  868. be nice

  869. to have

  870. that would

  871. be really

  872. special to

  873. mark the

  874. occasion so

  875. that they

  876. can continue

  877. drinking and

  878. celebrating the

  879. marriage of

  880. this couple.

  881. We see his

  882. graciousness and

  883. how he goes

  884. above and

  885. beyond what

  886. they need.

  887. And I think

  888. this is an

  889. important moment

  890. because sometimes

  891. I wonder if we

  892. don't have the

  893. tendency to see

  894. Jesus in a

  895. skewed way,

  896. as kind of a

  897. killjoy,

  898. as the guy

  899. who's only

  900. asking us to

  901. deny ourselves

  902. and take up

  903. our cross and

  904. follow him.

  905. And following

  906. him, that's

  907. going to mean

  908. that I have to

  909. give up

  910. everything fun

  911. in life,

  912. all the good

  913. stuff that I

  914. really enjoy,

  915. that I really

  916. like.

  917. That's not the

  918. picture of

  919. Jesus that we

  920. get here.

  921. we see that

  922. he is for

  923. joy, he is

  924. for celebration

  925. and the very

  926. thing that he

  927. does enables

  928. them to go

  929. on celebrating.

  930. He is for

  931. our joy.

  932. How else do

  933. we see that

  934. he is full of

  935. grace, the

  936. gloriousness of

  937. his grace?

  938. We see it and

  939. grace means

  940. gift.

  941. It means to

  942. give.

  943. We see it

  944. in how he

  945. gives honor

  946. rather than

  947. taking honor

  948. for himself.

  949. I mean,

  950. Jesus is

  951. worthy of

  952. all the

  953. attention in

  954. that room.

  955. Look who

  956. he is.

  957. He is the

  958. word who

  959. was God

  960. and made

  961. everything at

  962. the beginning.

  963. He is

  964. deity here

  965. in human

  966. flesh.

  967. He deserves

  968. the spotlight.

  969. He deserves

  970. the honor.

  971. And yet, in

  972. that moment

  973. at the

  974. wedding, he

  975. doesn't do

  976. anything to

  977. take honor,

  978. glory,

  979. attention for

  980. himself.

  981. Instead, he

  982. shows his

  983. graciousness, his

  984. giving nature

  985. by giving

  986. honor to the

  987. bridegroom.

  988. not only does

  989. he preserve

  990. his honor and

  991. save him from

  992. massive embarrassment,

  993. but he even

  994. gives him greater

  995. honor than he

  996. probably is due

  997. and deserves.

  998. I mean, that

  999. wine is amazing.

  1000. like, it's

  1001. better than the

  1002. good stuff that

  1003. we were having.

  1004. He doesn't

  1005. use this

  1006. wedding as a

  1007. chance to

  1008. point people

  1009. to himself.

  1010. Rather, he's

  1011. there and he

  1012. wants people to

  1013. be focused on

  1014. the marriage,

  1015. on the

  1016. bridegroom,

  1017. the bride.

  1018. He gives

  1019. honor.

  1020. These two

  1021. things are

  1022. beautiful.

  1023. We see his

  1024. divine power at

  1025. work in how he

  1026. turns the water

  1027. into wine, an

  1028. amazing miracle.

  1029. We see this

  1030. gracious

  1031. servanthood,

  1032. this humble

  1033. love at work in

  1034. how he

  1035. orchestrates this

  1036. to kind of

  1037. keep the focus

  1038. on what's

  1039. happening at

  1040. the wedding,

  1041. the honor

  1042. focused on the

  1043. bridegroom.

  1044. But I think

  1045. where we

  1046. really see

  1047. the glory of

  1048. Jesus shine

  1049. through is

  1050. when we just

  1051. consider how

  1052. both of these

  1053. kind of converge

  1054. in this moment.

  1055. We see the

  1056. divine power

  1057. and we see

  1058. this humble,

  1059. serving,

  1060. loving heart

  1061. come together

  1062. in this moment.

  1063. I mean,

  1064. as I just

  1065. said,

  1066. remember who

  1067. this is.

  1068. this is God.

  1069. In him,

  1070. the fullness

  1071. of deity

  1072. lives in

  1073. bodily form.

  1074. And yet,

  1075. where do we

  1076. see him

  1077. at this

  1078. wedding as

  1079. he exercises

  1080. the power

  1081. that's been,

  1082. well,

  1083. it's from

  1084. the Holy

  1085. Spirit.

  1086. I believe

  1087. that he

  1088. did this,

  1089. not just

  1090. using his

  1091. own divine

  1092. power,

  1093. but he uses

  1094. the power

  1095. of the Spirit

  1096. that's been

  1097. made available

  1098. to him

  1099. in this

  1100. moment.

  1101. Where do

  1102. we see,

  1103. where do

  1104. we see

  1105. the focus?

  1106. I mean,

  1107. here Jesus

  1108. is,

  1109. he's,

  1110. he's using

  1111. the power

  1112. of God,

  1113. but he's

  1114. doing it

  1115. off in the

  1116. back room

  1117. by the

  1118. kitchen

  1119. where only

  1120. the servants

  1121. can see

  1122. what he can

  1123. really do.

  1124. from the

  1125. shadows

  1126. of that

  1127. back room

  1128. by the

  1129. kitchen,

  1130. he is

  1131. blessing

  1132. and honoring

  1133. the guests

  1134. and the

  1135. bridegroom

  1136. in the

  1137. main room.

  1138. This is

  1139. amazing.

  1140. Jesus

  1141. is

  1142. God,

  1143. John has

  1144. told us,

  1145. but he

  1146. has come

  1147. into this

  1148. world

  1149. to live

  1150. as a

  1151. man,

  1152. as a

  1153. man among

  1154. men.

  1155. which means

  1156. that he,

  1157. he lives

  1158. as men

  1159. ought to

  1160. live.

  1161. He doesn't

  1162. exalt himself

  1163. over others.

  1164. He doesn't

  1165. say,

  1166. hey,

  1167. look at me

  1168. everyone.

  1169. He's not

  1170. like the

  1171. proud or

  1172. the arrogant

  1173. person.

  1174. He does

  1175. what we

  1176. ought to

  1177. do.

  1178. He loves,

  1179. he honors,

  1180. he,

  1181. he serves

  1182. his neighbors.

  1183. He puts

  1184. himself among

  1185. the servants

  1186. and he,

  1187. he works

  1188. this amazing

  1189. miracle there.

  1190. The sense

  1191. we get is

  1192. that the

  1193. guests,

  1194. they never

  1195. even knew

  1196. that the

  1197. wine ran

  1198. out.

  1199. The bridegroom

  1200. never knew.

  1201. It was just

  1202. Jesus,

  1203. his mother,

  1204. the servants

  1205. and the

  1206. disciples.

  1207. And this

  1208. is the same

  1209. kind of thing

  1210. that I think

  1211. we're going

  1212. to see all

  1213. through the

  1214. gospel.

  1215. this mixture,

  1216. divine power,

  1217. God,

  1218. and yet

  1219. humble

  1220. servant

  1221. here as a

  1222. man in

  1223. human flesh.

  1224. Not to

  1225. lord it over

  1226. people,

  1227. not to get

  1228. attention for

  1229. himself,

  1230. but to live

  1231. as a man

  1232. ought to,

  1233. to point

  1234. people to

  1235. the Father,

  1236. to glorify

  1237. him.

  1238. it's a

  1239. beautiful

  1240. thing.

  1241. And John

  1242. tells us

  1243. that this

  1244. is just

  1245. the first

  1246. of the

  1247. signs that

  1248. he did,

  1249. which

  1250. revealed

  1251. his glory.

  1252. Let's

  1253. pray.

  1254. Father in

  1255. heaven,

  1256. thank you

  1257. that you

  1258. have given

  1259. us a

  1260. little window

  1261. into what

  1262. happened

  1263. that day.

  1264. we

  1265. believe.

  1266. We see

  1267. it as

  1268. they saw

  1269. it and

  1270. we

  1271. believe.

  1272. You are

  1273. the Messiah.

  1274. You are

  1275. the Son

  1276. of God.

  1277. And it's

  1278. with joy

  1279. that we

  1280. give ourselves

  1281. and our

  1282. hearts to

  1283. you again.

  1284. Have

  1285. your way

  1286. in us,

  1287. we pray.

  1288. We ask

  1289. this in

  1290. Jesus'

  1291. name.

  1292. Amen.
