  1. If you have your Bible with you, please open it up to the Gospel of John.

  2. The Gospel of John, we're in chapter 2 this morning.

  3. We're continuing on through the story of Jesus as told by John the Apostle.

  4. Last Sunday, we saw how Jesus did an amazing miracle behind the scenes at the wedding in Cana.

  5. Turning water, and a lot of it, into not just wine, but better wine than the good stuff that they had already been drinking.

  6. And it was a gracious miracle and a wonderful display of power that he did there.

  7. Well, this morning we continue the story, and we're picking it up in verse 12 of chapter 2.

  8. After this, after the wedding, he went down, Jesus did, to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples.

  9. There they stayed for a few days.

  10. Verse 13.

  11. When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

  12. So not too long, they stayed in Capernaum, another town.

  13. And then the sense of the text here is that very soon after this, the Passover was near.

  14. And so Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

  15. Now, Passover was a really big deal.

  16. And so it's a little bit tricky for us to maybe get our heads into that mindset.

  17. I'm not going to go into explaining the whole significance of the Passover.

  18. But basically, it was the time of the year where they commemorated how the Lord had delivered them from slavery in Egypt.

  19. And led them out.

  20. And the Lord actually commanded that they remember this every year on a specific day.

  21. And so they did this.

  22. They celebrated the Passover.

  23. And not only that, but there was a whole week of festival that followed the Passover called the Festival of Unleavened Bread.

  24. And it was very common for many of the people to go up to Jerusalem and to celebrate and commemorate both of these things there in Jerusalem.

  25. So imagine Jerusalem, this city.

  26. They estimate about 2 million people at the time.

  27. Good-sized city.

  28. Imagine the roads coming into Jerusalem jammed with people from all over Israel.

  29. They've packed their bags up.

  30. They've got their animals saddled, whatever they had, carts.

  31. And they're all making the trek up to Jerusalem to celebrate and to commemorate the Passover and the festival which followed.

  32. Well, Jesus was among those who went up.

  33. And to put this a little bit into perspective, too, this was not just the local people in Israel that were coming to this.

  34. It was common that Jews would travel from all over the Mediterranean world to be there for Passover.

  35. This was like one of the big holy days, holy festivals of the year.

  36. And so just picture those entrances, those streets, those main roads coming into Jerusalem full of people.

  37. And the city of about 2 million just swelling with the influx of visitors, people from all over who had come to take part in the festival and to celebrate the Passover.

  38. Well, Jesus was one of those people who went up to Jerusalem and his disciples went with him.

  39. And we'll get to that in a moment.

  40. At some point in his time there, Jesus goes to the temple.

  41. And I want us to try to imagine a little bit of what this looked like.

  42. It's hard for us because it's hard to envision what does the temple even look like.

  43. I mean, it's not even there today.

  44. It's been destroyed and the temple mount has got other things on it right now.

  45. But to give us a little bit of a visual and just help us, we're going to watch just a short video clip here.

  46. Some guys have put together a bit of a 3D rendering just to kind of give you a sense of what it looked like or may have looked like on the temple mount.

  47. And in this clip, you'll see that the courts, the temple courts are empty.

  48. There's almost nobody in them.

  49. I want you to imagine them just jammed full of people.

  50. This is the Passover.

  51. People were there.

  52. So let's watch that.

  53. Verse 14.

  54. In the temple courts, Jesus found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money.

  55. So these people were there.

  56. And of course, they were offering a service to those who came, especially at this time for the Passover.

  57. Those people who were selling cattle, sheep and doves, they were offering these for sale for sacrifices to the Lord.

  58. That was kind of the main purpose of those specific animals.

  59. And those exchanging money, sitting at tables.

  60. At the temple, there was a very specific currency that they accepted there.

  61. And of course, the Roman Empire was made up of all kinds of different nations that had been conquered,

  62. each with their different kinds of currencies and stuff.

  63. And they only accepted one at the temple.

  64. And so that's what the exchangers were there to do,

  65. was to change their money into the kind accepted at the temple for offerings,

  66. as well as for purchasing these animals.

  67. So this is what Jesus, it says Jesus saw and found as he entered into the temple.

  68. People selling and people exchanging money.

  69. Verse 15.

  70. So Jesus made a whip out of cords and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle.

  71. He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.

  72. To those who sold doves, he said,

  73. Get these out of here.

  74. Stop turning my father's house into a market.

  75. Stop turning my father's house into a market.

  76. His disciples remembered that it is written,

  77. Zeal for your house will consume me.

  78. So Jesus comes into the temple courts,

  79. and it's full of people,

  80. and his attention rests, comes to rest,

  81. on those who are selling animals and those who are exchanging currencies.

  82. And then he does what probably nobody was expecting.

  83. He makes a whip,

  84. and he begins to untie the animals,

  85. set them loose,

  86. and drive them right out the temple gates.

  87. In fact, it says he drove all from the temple courts,

  88. and probably the sense of that,

  89. depending on your translation,

  90. is that he drove the sellers out as well.

  91. I don't think he used the whip on them.

  92. I think that was for the animals.

  93. All out from the temple courts,

  94. including the sheep and the cattle.

  95. He sends the coins of the money changers flying

  96. and flips their tables

  97. and tells them to get out.

  98. Get these animals out of here.

  99. Can you imagine

  100. what this might have looked like in that moment?

  101. I mean, this place is packed full of people.

  102. What are Jesus' disciples thinking

  103. as they watch this?

  104. What are the rest of the people

  105. that are just there,

  106. you know,

  107. for whatever reason,

  108. thinking?

  109. Last Sunday,

  110. we saw Jesus

  111. working a miracle behind the scenes

  112. in a way that didn't draw attention to himself.

  113. Here,

  114. what Jesus is doing

  115. is drawing the attention of everyone.

  116. You can just see the expression on their faces,

  117. wide-eyed.

  118. Look at him.

  119. What is he doing?

  120. Look at him.

  121. This would have been

  122. something to see.

  123. But of course,

  124. the big question is,

  125. why is he doing this?

  126. Why is he doing this?

  127. We get one line

  128. from Jesus' mouth

  129. that really captures the whole thing.

  130. the whole reason.

  131. John tells us that he said this,

  132. get these out of here

  133. with reference to the doves

  134. or the animals.

  135. Stop turning my father's house

  136. into a market.

  137. Now we'll pass over the fact

  138. that Jesus has just referred to

  139. the Lord God

  140. as his father.

  141. It doesn't seem that the people

  142. really reacted to that

  143. in this moment.

  144. They're going to react to it

  145. in a few chapters.

  146. We'll get to that.

  147. We'll talk about it then.

  148. But the main reason that we see

  149. has to do with this place.

  150. This is my father's house.

  151. This place is holy.

  152. This place is holy.

  153. And you guys,

  154. in what you've done here,

  155. are profaning it.

  156. What you're doing is dishonoring to him.

  157. This is hard for us

  158. to get our minds around.

  159. We don't have a temple

  160. that we go to.

  161. But think about it.

  162. I was trying to think,

  163. how can I really

  164. capture this,

  165. the significance of the temple

  166. in just a couple minutes.

  167. I mean,

  168. it all started back

  169. in the Old Testament

  170. with the tabernacle.

  171. This was the arrangement

  172. that God had made,

  173. this tabernacle,

  174. so that he could be

  175. among his people.

  176. They traveled around

  177. with this.

  178. They set the tent up.

  179. The presence of the Lord

  180. would come down

  181. upon this tabernacle

  182. in a thick cloud

  183. and glory.

  184. And God lived

  185. among his people

  186. and his people

  187. among him.

  188. This was the place

  189. where they could have

  190. relationship with him,

  191. where they could come near to him.

  192. The place that they

  193. offered sacrifices,

  194. which God said

  195. were required

  196. because of their sin

  197. in order to be close

  198. to him as a people.

  199. This is what is required.

  200. Blood sacrifices.

  201. God gave all kinds of

  202. commands as to

  203. how this was all to work.

  204. There was kind of

  205. different parts

  206. of the tabernacle

  207. that they could go into.

  208. And if you wanted to be

  209. in the most holy place,

  210. you had to be

  211. the high priest.

  212. go through all these

  213. cleansing rituals

  214. that God prescribed

  215. and all of this

  216. to illustrate

  217. his holiness.

  218. I am holy

  219. and you,

  220. my people,

  221. are not.

  222. And so there is,

  223. there are things required

  224. and we can only get

  225. so close.

  226. But the whole purpose

  227. of this tabernacle

  228. is relationship.

  229. For God to be

  230. with and among

  231. his people.

  232. And later on,

  233. the stuff of the tabernacle

  234. got transferred

  235. into the temple.

  236. A more permanent

  237. house.

  238. David was the one

  239. who came up

  240. with the idea

  241. to build

  242. a permanent

  243. dwelling place

  244. for the Lord

  245. among his people.

  246. And the Lord

  247. put his presence

  248. upon the temple

  249. just as he had

  250. with the tabernacle.

  251. And,

  252. and they saw

  253. his glory

  254. descending upon it

  255. saying,

  256. yes,

  257. my name is here.

  258. This is the place

  259. on earth

  260. where I will dwell

  261. among you.

  262. And so

  263. just think of

  264. the significance

  265. of this place.

  266. It's not the same

  267. temple.

  268. There's been a destruction

  269. and a rebuild.

  270. But the significance

  271. is the most

  272. important part.

  273. What is this place

  274. all about?

  275. Jesus says,

  276. this is

  277. my father's

  278. house.

  279. This is the place

  280. where God,

  281. Yahweh,

  282. the Lord

  283. Almighty,

  284. has chosen

  285. to dwell

  286. on earth

  287. where people

  288. may come

  289. close

  290. and approach

  291. and be near.

  292. This is a special

  293. place.

  294. This is a sacred

  295. place.

  296. And how should

  297. we feel

  298. as we walk

  299. up

  300. through the gates

  301. into the temple

  302. courts?

  303. the closest

  304. analogy I could

  305. think of

  306. was Moses

  307. in the burning

  308. bush.

  309. Hopefully you've

  310. heard that story

  311. before.

  312. Moses saw a bush

  313. that was on fire,

  314. but it was not

  315. being burnt up

  316. by the fire.

  317. The fire was

  318. actually the Lord's

  319. presence

  320. being made

  321. manifest

  322. in that

  323. bush.

  324. And the Lord

  325. spoke out

  326. of the bush

  327. to Moses

  328. and said,

  329. don't come

  330. any closer.

  331. Take off

  332. your sandals.

  333. The very

  334. ground

  335. where you're

  336. standing

  337. is holy.

  338. Why was it

  339. holy?

  340. Not because

  341. the ground

  342. was somehow

  343. special,

  344. but because

  345. of its

  346. closeness

  347. to the

  348. Lord's

  349. presence.

  350. That's what

  351. made it

  352. holy.

  353. And Moses

  354. in that

  355. story,

  356. it says,

  357. he was

  358. afraid and

  359. he hid

  360. his face.

  361. There was

  362. a deep

  363. reverence

  364. and awe.

  365. I am

  366. close

  367. to God

  368. himself,

  369. to his

  370. presence

  371. right here

  372. in this

  373. bush.

  374. This is

  375. the kind

  376. of feeling

  377. that we're

  378. meant to

  379. have

  380. as we

  381. come to

  382. the temple

  383. of the

  384. Lord,

  385. the place

  386. where his

  387. presence

  388. is made

  389. manifest.

  390. We're

  391. meant to be

  392. filled with

  393. awe,

  394. not just

  395. at the

  396. size

  397. of the

  398. pillars

  399. and at

  400. the

  401. expensiveness

  402. of the

  403. gold overlay,

  404. at the

  405. glory and

  406. wonder of

  407. this structure.

  408. It was

  409. built like

  410. that to

  411. reflect that

  412. the Lord,

  413. whose temple

  414. it is,

  415. is great

  416. and glorious

  417. and worthy

  418. and beautiful.

  419. this is

  420. the place

  421. where he

  422. has chosen

  423. to put

  424. his presence

  425. on earth.

  426. And so

  427. we ought to

  428. come into

  429. this place

  430. with a

  431. deep

  432. reverence

  433. and respect.

  434. What does

  435. Jesus find

  436. when he

  437. comes into

  438. the courts

  439. of the

  440. temple?

  441. One commentator

  442. said it really

  443. well.

  444. this place

  445. of solemn

  446. dignity,

  447. this place

  448. where the

  449. murmur of

  450. prayers should

  451. be heard,

  452. of holy

  453. adoration,

  454. the place

  455. where people

  456. are pouring

  457. out their

  458. hearts to

  459. the Lord

  460. in brokenness

  461. and out of a

  462. contrite heart

  463. had been

  464. turned into

  465. a marketplace,

  466. a place of

  467. business.

  468. instead of

  469. the sound

  470. of prayers

  471. being heard,

  472. you could

  473. hear the

  474. sound of

  475. people

  476. heckling

  477. over prices

  478. and exchange

  479. rates,

  480. the bellowing

  481. of cattle,

  482. the bleeding

  483. of sheep,

  484. people doing

  485. business.

  486. Jesus

  487. says,

  488. stop

  489. turning

  490. my

  491. father's

  492. house

  493. into a

  494. marketplace.

  495. You've

  496. turned

  497. this

  498. holy

  499. place

  500. into a

  501. common

  502. place.

  503. You've

  504. profaned

  505. it.

  506. Get

  507. out.

  508. Stop

  509. it.

  510. And he

  511. chases

  512. him right

  513. out the

  514. front

  515. gates.

  516. I can

  517. just

  518. imagine

  519. that

  520. righteous

  521. anger

  522. that he

  523. had in

  524. that

  525. moment.

  526. Flipping

  527. tables.

  528. This is

  529. such a

  530. contrast to

  531. the picture

  532. that we

  533. often have

  534. of Jesus

  535. the gentle

  536. man

  537. holding

  538. the sheep

  539. in his

  540. arms.

  541. But it's

  542. beautiful.

  543. It's

  544. glorious.

  545. He has

  546. this love

  547. for God

  548. like no

  549. one else

  550. does.

  551. I mean,

  552. here's

  553. one man

  554. going around

  555. this huge

  556. area

  557. doing all

  558. this.

  559. And he

  560. doesn't

  561. seem to

  562. care about

  563. what anybody

  564. else thinks

  565. there.

  566. Not the

  567. crowds,

  568. not the

  569. people in

  570. line to

  571. purchase

  572. things or

  573. exchange

  574. money,

  575. not the

  576. people doing

  577. the selling.

  578. He doesn't

  579. seem to

  580. care about

  581. the temple

  582. guards or

  583. the religious

  584. leaders or

  585. the Roman

  586. garrison that's

  587. probably overlooking

  588. the temple

  589. courts.

  590. He only cares

  591. about what

  592. one thinks,

  593. God,

  594. his father.

  595. God,

  596. how dare

  597. you do

  598. this in

  599. his sacred

  600. holy place?

  601. It's

  602. beautiful.

  603. one person

  604. remarked that

  605. Jesus was

  606. alone as

  607. he did

  608. this.

  609. It was

  610. just him,

  611. but that

  612. he likely

  613. had an

  614. ally in

  615. the

  616. consciences

  617. of the

  618. people.

  619. That even

  620. as he said

  621. this,

  622. you know,

  623. people are

  624. thinking,

  625. yeah,

  626. you're

  627. right.

  628. this isn't

  629. right,

  630. what we're

  631. doing here,

  632. yet no one

  633. else would

  634. have done

  635. it.

  636. Jesus,

  637. God's son,

  638. he came

  639. and cleaned

  640. house.

  641. His

  642. disciples,

  643. verse 17,

  644. remembered

  645. that it is

  646. written,

  647. zeal for

  648. your house

  649. will consume

  650. me.

  651. Now,

  652. I'm not going

  653. to go into

  654. detail about

  655. that,

  656. but it's

  657. the words

  658. from a

  659. psalm.

  660. David had

  661. said a

  662. similar

  663. thing in

  664. a song.

  665. He was

  666. passionate

  667. for the

  668. Lord's

  669. house.

  670. It hadn't

  671. been built

  672. yet,

  673. but he

  674. wanted it

  675. to be.

  676. And perhaps

  677. he took

  678. criticism

  679. for it.

  680. We don't

  681. know exactly

  682. the situation

  683. in the

  684. psalm in

  685. which he

  686. wrote those

  687. words,

  688. but his

  689. disciples

  690. kind of

  691. drew the

  692. connection,

  693. whether they

  694. remembered it

  695. right there

  696. in that

  697. moment or

  698. sometime

  699. after.

  700. Look at

  701. the passion,

  702. look at

  703. the zeal

  704. that he

  705. has.

  706. For the

  707. house of

  708. the Lord.

  709. Just like

  710. David did.

  711. He is the

  712. son of

  713. David.

  714. He is the

  715. Messiah,

  716. the one who

  717. will take up

  718. the throne

  719. of David.

  720. The Jews

  721. then responded

  722. to him.

  723. Verse 18.

  724. What sign

  725. can you show

  726. us to prove

  727. your authority

  728. to do all

  729. this?

  730. the Jews

  731. are probably

  732. a reference

  733. to the

  734. religious

  735. leaders

  736. rather than

  737. to the

  738. whole lot

  739. of people

  740. there.

  741. But they

  742. challenged

  743. Jesus.

  744. Like, who

  745. gave you the

  746. right to do

  747. this?

  748. Who put you

  749. in charge

  750. here?

  751. That's what

  752. Jesus has

  753. done.

  754. He's basically

  755. taken charge

  756. here at the

  757. temple of

  758. the Lord.

  759. Lord.

  760. So, if

  761. you're going

  762. to do

  763. this, who

  764. are you?

  765. Are you some

  766. kind of

  767. prophet?

  768. Show us a

  769. sign to

  770. prove that

  771. you have

  772. the authority

  773. to do

  774. this.

  775. This is

  776. what Jesus

  777. answered.

  778. Verse 19.

  779. Destroy this

  780. temple and

  781. I will raise

  782. it again in

  783. three days.

  784. They replied,

  785. it has

  786. taken 46

  787. years to

  788. build this

  789. temple and

  790. you are

  791. going to

  792. raise it

  793. in three

  794. days?

  795. But, John

  796. tells us, the

  797. temple he had

  798. spoken of was

  799. his body.

  800. After he was

  801. raised from

  802. the dead, his

  803. disciples recalled

  804. what he had

  805. said.

  806. Then they

  807. believed the

  808. scripture and

  809. the words that

  810. Jesus had

  811. spoken.

  812. So, the

  813. Jews, the

  814. Jewish leaders,

  815. they challenge

  816. Jesus and

  817. they demand

  818. a sign.

  819. Show us

  820. your authority

  821. to be doing

  822. this stuff

  823. here.

  824. Last we

  825. checked, we

  826. were in

  827. charge here

  828. at the

  829. temple.

  830. And Jesus

  831. gives them a

  832. sign.

  833. But what a

  834. sign to give

  835. them.

  836. I kind of

  837. would have

  838. loved to

  839. just see

  840. Jesus'

  841. expression as

  842. he said it.

  843. Destroy this

  844. temple.

  845. I don't know

  846. whether he

  847. gestured to

  848. his body

  849. or not.

  850. We don't

  851. know.

  852. Destroy this

  853. temple and

  854. I will

  855. raise it

  856. again in

  857. three days.

  858. That's the

  859. sign.

  860. And John

  861. tells us that

  862. all along he

  863. meant his

  864. body when he

  865. said temple.

  866. That's what he

  867. meant.

  868. And so it

  869. seems as though

  870. even as he

  871. said it, he's

  872. intentionally

  873. concealing the

  874. sign with some

  875. kind of cryptic

  876. language.

  877. This temple

  878. which it

  879. referenced to

  880. his body.

  881. You could

  882. think of

  883. it as

  884. almost like

  885. a riddle

  886. or a

  887. micro parable.

  888. They didn't

  889. understand it.

  890. They thought

  891. he was talking

  892. about the

  893. building.

  894. The first

  895. thing their

  896. minds go to

  897. though is not

  898. and this is

  899. interesting.

  900. I mean think

  901. of this.

  902. If he's

  903. promising to

  904. give us a

  905. sign, what

  906. do we have

  907. to do to

  908. see it?

  909. We have to

  910. tear the

  911. temple down.

  912. Destroy it.

  913. And then I'll

  914. show you that

  915. I can rebuild

  916. it in three

  917. days.

  918. That's what

  919. they're thinking.

  920. Like even

  921. that sounds

  922. crazy.

  923. Like who's

  924. going to tear

  925. this down so

  926. that we can

  927. see the

  928. proof?

  929. All along

  930. though he was

  931. referring to

  932. his body.

  933. Their minds

  934. go immediately

  935. to the length

  936. of time.

  937. Not to the

  938. destruction part

  939. but to the

  940. length of time

  941. that he could

  942. raise it back

  943. up.

  944. 46 years

  945. it's taken

  946. to build

  947. this temple.

  948. I mean you

  949. saw it in

  950. the video.

  951. Look at

  952. it.

  953. You're

  954. telling me

  955. that you

  956. can raise

  957. that back

  958. up in

  959. three days?

  960. It's not

  961. even really a

  962. question.

  963. It's a

  964. statement.

  965. You're out

  966. of your

  967. mind.

  968. That's

  969. ridiculous.

  970. That's

  971. absurd.

  972. word.

  973. But that's

  974. not what

  975. he meant.

  976. He was

  977. referring to

  978. his body

  979. all along.

  980. It was

  981. intentionally

  982. concealed in

  983. that language

  984. so that when

  985. the sign was

  986. fulfilled and

  987. he was raised

  988. from the dead

  989. three days

  990. after being

  991. destroyed

  992. on that

  993. cross

  994. they would

  995. see.

  996. They would

  997. realize

  998. yes he

  999. does have

  1000. the authority

  1001. to do what

  1002. he did

  1003. here at

  1004. the temple.

  1005. It wasn't

  1006. until after

  1007. that even

  1008. his disciples

  1009. realized that

  1010. that's what

  1011. he meant.

  1012. After he

  1013. was raised

  1014. from the

  1015. dead his

  1016. disciples

  1017. recalled what

  1018. he had

  1019. said.

  1020. then they

  1021. believed the

  1022. scripture and

  1023. the words that

  1024. Jesus had

  1025. spoken.

  1026. And we

  1027. might wonder

  1028. for a moment

  1029. which is

  1030. harder to

  1031. raise this

  1032. whole temple

  1033. building back

  1034. up again in

  1035. three days or

  1036. for a body

  1037. that's been

  1038. absolutely

  1039. destroyed and

  1040. has died from

  1041. suffocation

  1042. and loss

  1043. of blood

  1044. with a

  1045. spear piercing

  1046. through into

  1047. the heart

  1048. and then

  1049. lying dead in

  1050. a tomb for

  1051. three days to

  1052. be raised back

  1053. to life which

  1054. is harder.

  1055. I think that

  1056. kind of gets to

  1057. the point of

  1058. what Jesus is

  1059. saying.

  1060. It's

  1061. impossible.

  1062. Only an

  1063. act of God

  1064. could do

  1065. this.

  1066. God

  1067. will

  1068. be

  1069. offering

  1070. them the

  1071. ultimate

  1072. sign.

  1073. But will

  1074. they

  1075. remember it

  1076. when he's

  1077. raised from

  1078. the dead?

  1079. John sums

  1080. up this

  1081. whole section

  1082. of Jesus

  1083. being there

  1084. in verses

  1085. 23 to

  1086. 25.

  1087. Now while he

  1088. was in

  1089. Jerusalem at

  1090. the Passover

  1091. festival,

  1092. many people

  1093. saw the

  1094. signs he

  1095. was performing

  1096. and believed

  1097. in his

  1098. name.

  1099. But Jesus

  1100. would not

  1101. entrust himself

  1102. to them

  1103. for he knew

  1104. all people.

  1105. He did not

  1106. need any

  1107. testimony about

  1108. mankind for

  1109. he knew what

  1110. was in each

  1111. person.

  1112. So the week

  1113. continued,

  1114. the Passover

  1115. festival.

  1116. Notice that it

  1117. says many

  1118. people saw the

  1119. signs,

  1120. plural.

  1121. This wasn't

  1122. the only one,

  1123. this cleansing

  1124. of the

  1125. temple.

  1126. There was

  1127. more things

  1128. that he

  1129. did and

  1130. many people

  1131. saw them

  1132. and believed

  1133. in his

  1134. name.

  1135. And there's

  1136. all kinds

  1137. of questions

  1138. here.

  1139. Did they

  1140. believe genuinely

  1141. or just

  1142. superficially?

  1143. How come

  1144. he didn't

  1145. entrust

  1146. himself to

  1147. them?

  1148. What does

  1149. that even

  1150. mean?

  1151. In what

  1152. sense does

  1153. Jesus know

  1154. all men

  1155. and know

  1156. what is

  1157. in man?

  1158. I don't

  1159. have the

  1160. answer to

  1161. all those

  1162. questions.

  1163. But I

  1164. think one

  1165. thing is

  1166. clear.

  1167. We do

  1168. see that

  1169. somehow

  1170. Jesus knows

  1171. things that

  1172. only God

  1173. can know.

  1174. I mean,

  1175. he's just

  1176. predicted his

  1177. own death

  1178. and three

  1179. days later

  1180. resurrection

  1181. from the

  1182. dead.

  1183. He knows

  1184. things about

  1185. people that

  1186. nobody except

  1187. God could

  1188. know.

  1189. he saw

  1190. and knew

  1191. that about

  1192. Nathaniel

  1193. sitting under

  1194. the fig tree

  1195. and we're

  1196. going to see

  1197. more of this

  1198. kind of thing

  1199. throughout the

  1200. gospel of

  1201. John.

  1202. What's the

  1203. significance of

  1204. all this?

  1205. John is

  1206. giving us

  1207. signs.

  1208. He's showing

  1209. us the things

  1210. that confirm

  1211. that Jesus

  1212. is who

  1213. they're all

  1214. discovering him

  1215. to be

  1216. through this

  1217. story.

  1218. He knows

  1219. these things

  1220. because he

  1221. is the

  1222. Christ.

  1223. He is the

  1224. Messiah.

  1225. He is the

  1226. Son of

  1227. God.

  1228. He is

  1229. God.

  1230. And the

  1231. cleansing of

  1232. the temple

  1233. is another

  1234. sign.

  1235. It's another

  1236. pointer

  1237. that he is

  1238. as well.

  1239. Back in the

  1240. Old Testament

  1241. times, the

  1242. glory of the

  1243. Lord came

  1244. down upon

  1245. the temple.

  1246. In a very

  1247. real sense,

  1248. that day as

  1249. Jesus walked

  1250. into the

  1251. temple, the

  1252. glory of

  1253. the Lord

  1254. could be

  1255. seen shining

  1256. out.

  1257. Do you see

  1258. it?

  1259. As he flips

  1260. the tables

  1261. and cleans

  1262. house and

  1263. gets this

  1264. stuff out

  1265. of there.

  1266. Do you see

  1267. that love,

  1268. that passion

  1269. for God

  1270. burning brightly

  1271. in that

  1272. moment and

  1273. for God's

  1274. glory?

  1275. I think if

  1276. John the

  1277. apostle who

  1278. wrote this

  1279. was here

  1280. today, his

  1281. main question

  1282. to us would

  1283. be, do you

  1284. see the

  1285. signs?

  1286. Do you see

  1287. what he did

  1288. that day at

  1289. the temple?

  1290. Do you hear

  1291. what he said

  1292. about his

  1293. death and

  1294. resurrection?

  1295. Do you see

  1296. these things

  1297. about how he

  1298. knew things

  1299. that no

  1300. one, no

  1301. ordinary human

  1302. being could

  1303. know?

  1304. Do you see

  1305. the signs?

  1306. Do you

  1307. believe?

  1308. Do you

  1309. believe that

  1310. he is the

  1311. one?

  1312. That's what

  1313. this is all

  1314. coming back

  1315. to.

  1316. His

  1317. disciples saw

  1318. it.

  1319. They saw

  1320. it when he

  1321. was raised

  1322. from the

  1323. dead,

  1324. ultimately

  1325. confirmed.

  1326. It says,

  1327. then they

  1328. believed the

  1329. scripture and

  1330. the words that

  1331. Jesus had

  1332. spoken.

  1333. Do you

  1334. see it?

  1335. Do you

  1336. believe?

  1337. the last

  1338. thing I

  1339. want to

  1340. touch on

  1341. here,

  1342. something that

  1343. just really

  1344. struck me

  1345. yesterday as

  1346. I was thinking

  1347. about this,

  1348. is just

  1349. this whole

  1350. idea of

  1351. reverence.

  1352. Jesus comes

  1353. into there

  1354. and he

  1355. cleans house

  1356. and what

  1357. were the

  1358. people guilty

  1359. of?

  1360. they were

  1361. guilty of

  1362. turning the

  1363. holy into

  1364. a common

  1365. place, a

  1366. marketplace.

  1367. They were

  1368. guilty of

  1369. irreverence

  1370. at the

  1371. place where

  1372. God's

  1373. presence

  1374. dwells.

  1375. Irreverence.

  1376. It got me

  1377. thinking,

  1378. how often

  1379. do I come

  1380. to the

  1381. Lord and

  1382. approach him,

  1383. even in

  1384. prayer,

  1385. with a

  1386. lack of

  1387. that deep

  1388. reverence,

  1389. that he

  1390. is the

  1391. holy one.

  1392. I'm coming

  1393. into his

  1394. presence to

  1395. speak with

  1396. him.

  1397. I started

  1398. to feel

  1399. convicted.

  1400. That's probably

  1401. just the tip

  1402. of the

  1403. iceberg.

  1404. There's

  1405. probably all

  1406. kinds of

  1407. habits and

  1408. things that I

  1409. do in my

  1410. life in

  1411. which I

  1412. don't show

  1413. a deep

  1414. reverence for

  1415. God.

  1416. Jesus shows

  1417. it beautifully

  1418. how we

  1419. should think

  1420. what our

  1421. attitude should

  1422. be towards

  1423. the Lord.

  1424. And praise

  1425. the Lord that

  1426. Jesus is the

  1427. lamb who

  1428. takes away our

  1429. sins, who

  1430. cleanses us,

  1431. who forgives us

  1432. of those things,

  1433. those ways in

  1434. which we have

  1435. been irreverent.

  1436. But may the

  1437. Lord show us

  1438. as his

  1439. people more

  1440. and more how

  1441. we ought to

  1442. respect him

  1443. and revere

  1444. him and

  1445. treat him as

  1446. holy in our

  1447. everyday lives.

  1448. Let's pray.

  1449. Lord God, we

  1450. thank you for

  1451. this little

  1452. glimpse into

  1453. what happened

  1454. that day that

  1455. you've given

  1456. us in your

  1457. word.

  1458. And we

  1459. pray and ask

  1460. that you

  1461. would come

  1462. and search

  1463. our hearts

  1464. and know

  1465. us.

  1466. Know our

  1467. anxious thoughts,

  1468. know our

  1469. irreverent

  1470. habits.

  1471. We ask that

  1472. you would

  1473. forgive us

  1474. for the ways

  1475. in which we

  1476. have not

  1477. revered you,

  1478. not feared

  1479. you as you

  1480. deserve.

  1481. Teach us

  1482. to live

  1483. the way

  1484. that we

  1485. ought to.

  1486. Help us

  1487. to see

  1488. your glory

  1489. so that

  1490. we might

  1491. be gripped

  1492. with a

  1493. sense of

  1494. awe

  1495. for who

  1496. you are.

  1497. A sense

  1498. that really

  1499. does lead

  1500. us to

  1501. live

  1502. different,

  1503. Lord.

  1504. Do this

  1505. work in

  1506. our hearts,

  1507. we pray,

  1508. and we

  1509. ask this

  1510. for the

  1511. glory of

  1512. your name.

  1513. Amen.
