  1. grace and peace to all of you who are watching or listening today.

  2. After another long week of social distancing,

  3. I hope and I pray that God has been working in your heart

  4. and reminding you of just how he has made you for relationship,

  5. not only with other people, but with him.

  6. Today, we continue on through the story of Jesus

  7. as told by the Apostle John.

  8. If you have your Bible with you,

  9. would you open it up to John chapter 4?

    John 4 chapter mention

  10. Last Sunday, we saw how Jesus was on his way from Judea to Galilee,

  11. and he made a bit of a pit stop in Samaria.

  12. It was there near the town of Sychar that he met the woman at the well

  13. and had that conversation with her,

  14. and the Samaritans invited Jesus to stay with them for two days.

  15. And Jesus agreed.

  16. He stayed with them for two days.

  17. Well, now Jesus is on the move again,

  18. and he's headed back, according to his original course, into Galilee.

  19. So we pick up the story in John chapter 4, verse 43.

    John 4:43

  20. After the two days, Jesus left for Galilee.

  21. Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.

  22. When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him.

  23. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover festival,

  24. for they also had been there.

  25. So the first thing that we notice from John is that Jesus is now going back into his own country.

  26. There's a signaled shift here.

  27. He's been with the Samaritans in Samaria,

  28. and now he's going back into his own country,

  29. back into the territory of the Jews.

  30. But even more than that, he's going back into his own kind of home region,

  31. his own neck of the woods.

  32. It's Galilee is where he has lived.

  33. That's where the town of Nazareth, his hometown, is.

  34. And what John says here, right at the beginning in verse 44,

  35. kind of casts a bit of a shadow over the rest of what we're about to read.

  36. He says,

  37. Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country or his own region.

  38. What does he mean by that?

  39. Well, I think the best place to go to understand that is to some of the other gospel records,

  40. which record Jesus saying a very similar thing.

  41. My mind goes to Mark chapter 6,

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  42. where we read about Jesus visiting his hometown of Nazareth,

  43. and it probably happened around the time that we're reading of here in John.

  44. Now, when Jesus went to Nazareth, the initial response was a good one.

  45. The people welcomed him.

  46. They were kind of excited.

  47. They kind of wondered,

  48. what are all these miracles that you've been doing?

  49. But it wasn't long before that initial excitement wore off,

  50. and they began to say some things to Jesus,

  51. which were rather dishonoring.

  52. Isn't this the carpenter?

  53. Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James,

  54. Joseph, Judas, and Simon?

  55. Aren't his sisters here with us?

  56. And they took offense at him.

  57. Jesus said to them,

  58. A prophet is not without honor except in his own town,

  59. among his relatives, and in his own home.

  60. So what's going on there?

  61. Well, it seems that the people in Jesus' hometown,

  62. they have kind of come to this attitude of,

  63. well, what makes you think that you're special?

  64. Aren't you, after all, just the village carpenter?

  65. And we know you.

  66. I mean, look at your families right here with us.

  67. If you were someone special, I think we'd have known about it.

  68. You're just one of us.

  69. What makes you think that you're so good?

  70. They took offense at him.

  71. So the initial welcome turned into dishonor.

  72. And I think that's kind of what Jesus is referring to here back in John,

  73. when he says,

  74. Now, he says,

  75. A prophet has no honor in his own country,

  76. or in his own neck of the woods.

  77. Just like with the prophets long ago,

  78. there was this sense in which pride kind of mixes together with familiarity,

  79. and we just,

  80. we can't really accept that you,

  81. I mean, you're one of us.

  82. We know you,

  83. that you have been chosen by God for a special purpose,

  84. to be a prophet,

  85. God's spokesperson.

  86. I don't think so.

  87. The pattern is repeating itself,

  88. or John is hinting that it's about to repeat itself again.

  89. Verse 45,

  90. When Jesus arrived in Galilee,

  91. the Galileans welcomed him.

  92. So initially,

  93. the response is much like it was in Nazareth.

  94. The response is good.

  95. Jesus is back in his neck of the woods,

  96. and the people there are kind of,

  97. they're eager to have him.

  98. They're excited.

  99. But John tells us why.

  100. They're excited.

  101. Why they welcome him.

  102. He adds a little clause onto that.

  103. The Galileans welcomed him,

  104. having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover festival,

  105. for they also had been there.

  106. Literally,

  107. having seen all things,

  108. as many as he did in Jerusalem.

  109. Okay,

  110. so this is part of the reason for the excitement,

  111. and for the big welcome,

  112. because not too long ago,

  113. we read in a previous message,

  114. that back in chapter 2,

  115. Jesus was in Jerusalem at the Passover festival.

  116. You'll remember there.

  117. He flipped the tables in the temple courts.

  118. He drove out the animals and the cellars.

  119. And John tells us back there in chapter 2,

  120. while he was in Jerusalem at the festival,

  121. many people saw the signs he was performing,

  122. and believed in his name.

  123. But Jesus would not entrust himself to them,

  124. for he knew all people.

  125. He did not need any testimony about men,

  126. for he knew what was in each person.

  127. So,

  128. some of these Galileans had been there.

  129. They were among those who had seen the many signs,

  130. which Jesus had performed.

  131. Back in chapter 2,

  132. John tells us that they believed in his name.

  133. And yet,

  134. when we looked at this in a previous message,

  135. we kind of wondered,

  136. did they really believe?

  137. Jesus,

  138. it says,

  139. would not entrust himself to them,

  140. because he knew them.

  141. He knew what was going on in their thoughts,

  142. and in their hearts.

  143. And so,

  144. we kind of wondered,

  145. is their faith superficial?

  146. Is it flawed in some way?

  147. Nicodemus kind of became an example of that.

  148. He believed that Jesus was a teacher,

  149. who had come from God.

  150. And yet,

  151. he did not receive,

  152. the testimony of Jesus.

  153. He did not believe the earthly things,

  154. that Jesus was telling him.

  155. And so,

  156. Jesus said,

  157. how can you believe the heavenly things,

  158. if I was to tell you about them?

  159. There was a superficiality to his faith.

  160. There was a flawedness to it.

  161. It was incomplete.

  162. It only came part way.

  163. And so,

  164. when we come back to the Galileans,

  165. we're kind of expecting to see

  166. something of attention unfold here.

  167. There's welcome,

  168. there's excitement,

  169. but Jesus has also said,

  170. the reception here,

  171. in Galilee,

  172. in home territory,

  173. it's not going to be,

  174. the same as it was,

  175. among the Samaritans,

  176. where they just kind of said,

  177. we believe that you're the savior of the world.

  178. It's not going to go like that.

  179. So,

  180. once more,

  181. in verse 46,

  182. John tells us,

  183. once more,

  184. Jesus visited Cana,

  185. in Galilee,

  186. where he had turned the water into wine.

  187. And there was a certain royal official,

  188. whose son lay sick,

  189. at Capernaum.

  190. When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee,

  191. from Judea,

  192. he went to him,

  193. and begged him to come and heal his son,

  194. who was close to death.

  195. Unless you people see signs and wonders,

  196. Jesus told him,

  197. you will never believe.

  198. So,

  199. Jesus is in Cana,

  200. the place where he had already done,

  201. a great sign,

  202. turning the water into wine.

  203. We're not sure,

  204. just how many people,

  205. ended up knowing about that,

  206. because he kind of did it on the down low.

  207. But as he's there in Cana,

  208. there's a certain unnamed,

  209. royal official,

  210. presumably from Capernaum,

  211. who gets word that he's arrived.

  212. And so he comes,

  213. to pay Jesus a visit in Cana.

  214. And the reason why,

  215. is because his son,

  216. is lying sick,

  217. in Capernaum.

  218. John tells us,

  219. that his son,

  220. was close to death,

  221. verse 47.

  222. We find out a little bit further down,

  223. in verse 52,

  224. that he has a fever,

  225. and we presume,

  226. it's a severe one,

  227. if he's close to death.

  228. And so,

  229. this man comes,

  230. to Jesus,

  231. and it says,

  232. he begged him,

  233. to come and heal his son.

  234. Let's get into the,

  235. the headspace,

  236. of this official,

  237. for a moment.

  238. Can you imagine,

  239. what he must be feeling?

  240. He's a royal official,

  241. and so we imagine,

  242. he's probably a person,

  243. with some wealth,

  244. with some means.

  245. He's probably,

  246. already,

  247. tried,

  248. all the doctors.

  249. He's probably,

  250. already tried,

  251. a bunch of different,

  252. medications,

  253. and treatments.

  254. And yet,

  255. his son,

  256. he refers to him,

  257. in verse 49,

  258. as my child.

  259. His,

  260. his son,

  261. lies sick,

  262. in bed,

  263. and he continues,

  264. to get worse,

  265. and worse,

  266. and worse,

  267. as the days go by.

  268. He doesn't look so good.

  269. We imagine,

  270. you know,

  271. perhaps his,

  272. skin color's not looking,

  273. so good anymore.

  274. And his,

  275. fever is high,

  276. he's just burning up,

  277. and things are getting,

  278. worse and worse,

  279. and they've tried,

  280. everything.

  281. And he's desperate.

  282. So desperate,

  283. that he,

  284. makes the 17 mile trek,

  285. as soon as he hears,

  286. that Jesus,

  287. has come to Cana,

  288. to come to Jesus,

  289. this guy who he's heard,

  290. has done miracles,

  291. or signs,

  292. maybe he can help.

  293. Those of you who are parents,

  294. you can imagine,

  295. just maybe what this man,

  296. might be feeling,

  297. just thinking of your own child,

  298. in this kind of situation,

  299. lying sick,

  300. in the bed at home,

  301. for weeks,

  302. and still not improving,

  303. but getting worse.

  304. This man,

  305. is desperate.

  306. He comes,

  307. to Jesus,

  308. and begs him,

  309. come,

  310. heal my son,

  311. come with me,

  312. back to Capernaum.

  313. And Jesus responds,

  314. in verse 48,

  315. with this,

  316. unless you people,

  317. see signs and wonders,

  318. Jesus told him,

  319. you will never believe.

  320. What kind of a response,

  321. is that?

  322. I mean,

  323. it's not the one,

  324. that we're expecting here.

  325. It kind of seems insensitive,

  326. perhaps a little cold,

  327. don't you think?

  328. This man has just come,

  329. and begged Jesus,

  330. to help heal his son,

  331. and Jesus,

  332. seems to be,

  333. rebuking him,

  334. about his,

  335. lack of faith.

  336. Unless,

  337. unless,

  338. you people,

  339. see,

  340. signs and wonders,

  341. you will never believe.

  342. So what's going on here?

  343. Is Jesus insensitive?

  344. Well,

  345. I think the first thing,

  346. to,

  347. take into consideration,

  348. is,

  349. is the context here.

  350. Notice that Jesus,

  351. says these words,

  352. both to,

  353. to the man,

  354. and,

  355. to a larger group.

  356. He says,

  357. unless you people,

  358. unless you plural,

  359. see,

  360. signs and wonders,

  361. you,

  362. plural,

  363. will never believe.

  364. So he's,

  365. he's having a bigger group conversation here.

  366. But he also does speak to the man.

  367. It says,

  368. unless you people,

  369. see signs and wonders,

  370. Jesus told him,

  371. you will never believe.

  372. And so what's going on here?

  373. Well,

  374. I think that,

  375. if we just,

  376. go off of,

  377. what's there in Jesus' words,

  378. words,

  379. we can,

  380. we can get a bit of a picture.

  381. He's,

  382. he's having a conversation with the larger group here.

  383. And why would Jesus be saying this?

  384. Probably,

  385. and it's kind of implied from his words,

  386. they're,

  387. they're pressing him

  388. to show them a sign,

  389. to do a miracle for them.

  390. And the sense of it,

  391. you almost get is,

  392. you know,

  393. give us some proof

  394. that what you're saying is right.

  395. And give us a sign that we should listen to you.

  396. And this coming from many people

  397. who had already seen the signs that he had done

  398. back in Jerusalem.

  399. And so that's the first thing to keep in mind.

  400. There's a larger group conversation going here,

  401. but Jesus also speaks to the man as well.

  402. So,

  403. so what's going on here?

  404. I think it's good for us to remember those words

  405. that we heard back in John chapter two,

  406. which I read earlier.

  407. Those words were,

  408. Jesus would not entrust himself

  409. to the people up in Jerusalem.

  410. Why?

  411. Because he knew all people.

  412. He was not needing any testimony about men,

  413. for he was knowing

  414. what was in each person.

  415. So Jesus knows what they're thinking.

  416. He knows what's going on in their hearts.

  417. And I think if we,

  418. if we remember that,

  419. then suddenly we start to see this phrase,

  420. this,

  421. this reply a little bit differently.

  422. Is Jesus being insensitive and cold?

  423. Or,

  424. is he perhaps

  425. telling them

  426. what he really knows

  427. about what's going on in their hearts?

  428. I don't think that Jesus is just kind of

  429. writing them off

  430. with a,

  431. with kind of a,

  432. you know,

  433. passing judgment kind of comment.

  434. I think what he's doing

  435. is holding the mirror up to these people

  436. and saying,

  437. do you see just how,

  438. how,

  439. how hard your hearts are?

  440. How stubborn and skeptical

  441. and unbelieving they are?

  442. You've already seen signs.

  443. Believe me now,

  444. listen to the words that I'm saying.

  445. As it pertains to this particular man

  446. who now enters into this,

  447. to the midst of this

  448. and begs for Jesus to come heal his son.

  449. And I think Jesus knows

  450. what's going on

  451. in this particular man's heart as well.

  452. And maybe it's a little bit different

  453. than the larger group.

  454. We don't know for sure

  455. what Jesus knew about him.

  456. But perhaps it was,

  457. perhaps Jesus knew

  458. that this man

  459. was,

  460. was not really thinking

  461. about who Jesus was.

  462. He just saw him as,

  463. as a healer,

  464. as a miracle worker.

  465. I'm here to get my healing,

  466. my miracle worker,

  467. almost treating him like a doctor.

  468. I've come for my,

  469. for the,

  470. the service of healing.

  471. And so come with me

  472. and,

  473. and,

  474. and do it.

  475. Please.

  476. But I think Jesus knows

  477. that even though this man

  478. believes he's able to heal,

  479. it would seem so,

  480. that his faith is still

  481. not at the place

  482. that it needs to be,

  483. that it should be.

  484. That,

  485. that real kind of deep

  486. trust

  487. and recognition

  488. of just who it is

  489. that he is asking

  490. is not there.

  491. It's almost as if he's maybe

  492. just looking for the,

  493. for,

  494. for his miracle

  495. and,

  496. and then he can go his way.

  497. But,

  498. Jesus longs for this man

  499. and all of these people

  500. to,

  501. to truly,

  502. sincerely,

  503. from the heart,

  504. believe him,

  505. believe his words,

  506. trust,

  507. trust the truth

  508. of,

  509. of who he is.

  510. That's what I think

  511. is going on here

  512. in this situation.

  513. The conversation goes on.

  514. Jesus drops this bomb

  515. on them.

  516. I think he really

  517. holds the mirror up to them.

  518. Do you see how

  519. you guys

  520. do not believe?

  521. You guys are

  522. stubborn hearted.

  523. Imagine that

  524. there was some silence

  525. there,

  526. maybe,

  527. perhaps,

  528. a pause.

  529. And the royal official

  530. says to Jesus

  531. in verse 49,

  532. Sir,

  533. come down

  534. before my child dies.

  535. So he,

  536. he asks again.

  537. It doesn't mean

  538. that he,

  539. he hasn't heard Jesus

  540. or taken

  541. Jesus' words seriously,

  542. but,

  543. but he asks again.

  544. And the real test

  545. as to whether

  546. he is listening,

  547. whether he

  548. will believe,

  549. comes in what

  550. Jesus says to him

  551. next.

  552. Jesus,

  553. I imagine,

  554. looks him straight

  555. in the eyes

  556. and says,

  557. go.

  558. Your son lives

  559. or your son

  560. will live.

  561. The original,

  562. it's present tense.

  563. Your son lives.

  564. And it's not

  565. in the sense of

  566. he's,

  567. his life is hanging

  568. on by a thread

  569. right now

  570. and one day

  571. he'll recover.

  572. It's not just a prophecy.

  573. The sense of it is,

  574. go,

  575. your son lives.

  576. He's recovering.

  577. As we speak,

  578. he is right now

  579. starting to,

  580. beginning to,

  581. and will continue

  582. to get better.

  583. This is the moment

  584. of testing

  585. for this man.

  586. It's here that,

  587. that what Jesus

  588. has said earlier,

  589. you don't believe

  590. as you ought,

  591. as you should.

  592. It's here that

  593. Jesus will,

  594. in a sense,

  595. give this man

  596. the personal invitation

  597. to believe

  598. as he ought.

  599. To accept

  600. the words of Jesus

  601. as the truth,

  602. even without

  603. being able

  604. to see

  605. whether,

  606. and confirm

  607. whether,

  608. what Jesus

  609. has said

  610. is happened

  611. in reality.

  612. it's quite a moment.

  613. And I would have loved

  614. to have been there

  615. to just see

  616. how

  617. this man

  618. was processing

  619. all of this.

  620. The question

  621. that probably

  622. everybody in the crowd

  623. is wondering

  624. is,

  625. so,

  626. is he going

  627. to go?

  628. Does he believe

  629. Jesus?

  630. Does he believe

  631. this?

  632. or is he going

  633. to continue

  634. asking Jesus

  635. to come with him?

  636. Notice that

  637. Jesus both

  638. grants and denies

  639. at the same time.

  640. He grants

  641. his request

  642. to heal,

  643. but he denies

  644. his request

  645. to come with him.

  646. No,

  647. go.

  648. You go your way.

  649. Your son

  650. lives.

  651. And so,

  652. this is the moment

  653. of testing

  654. for this man,

  655. faith

  656. looks like

  657. not asking

  658. Jesus again

  659. and leaving

  660. Jesus.

  661. Will he?

  662. John tells us

  663. in verse 50,

  664. the man

  665. took Jesus

  666. at his word

  667. and departed.

  668. Literally,

  669. the man believed

  670. the word

  671. that Jesus said

  672. to him

  673. and left.

  674. So,

  675. yes,

  676. he did.

  677. he came

  678. all this way,

  679. about 17

  680. or so miles

  681. and he left

  682. empty-handed,

  683. trusting

  684. that Jesus'

  685. words

  686. were true

  687. and that his son

  688. was recovering.

  689. The story

  690. goes on

  691. in verse 51.

  692. While Jesus

  693. was still,

  694. or sorry,

  695. while the servant

  696. was still

  697. on the way,

  698. while the official

  699. was still

  700. on the way,

  701. his servants

  702. met him

  703. with the news

  704. that his boy

  705. was living.

  706. When he inquired

  707. as to the time

  708. when his son

  709. got better,

  710. they said to him,

  711. yesterday at one

  712. in the afternoon,

  713. the fever left him.

  714. Then,

  715. the father realized

  716. that this was

  717. the exact time

  718. at which Jesus

  719. had said to him,

  720. your son

  721. lives.

  722. So,

  723. he and his

  724. whole household

  725. believed.

  726. Can you imagine

  727. that moment

  728. as the official

  729. is on his way

  730. back to Capernaum

  731. and he sees

  732. his servants

  733. coming in the distance?

  734. What's going on

  735. in his mind?

  736. They're either

  737. coming to bring

  738. news

  739. of

  740. death

  741. or life.

  742. Can you imagine

  743. how he must have felt

  744. as they got near

  745. and he saw

  746. the expressions

  747. on their faces

  748. and then as he

  749. finally heard

  750. the news

  751. from their own

  752. lips?

  753. He's getting

  754. better.

  755. He's better.

  756. Oh,

  757. how that must have

  758. just made this

  759. father rejoice

  760. in his heart.

  761. He does

  762. what probably

  763. many of us

  764. would do

  765. and inquires

  766. about the time.

  767. I don't think

  768. we should read

  769. into that

  770. that he was

  771. doubting

  772. that Jesus'

  773. word had

  774. anything to do

  775. with it.

  776. But he inquires

  777. as to the time.

  778. They tell him

  779. and the father,

  780. it says,

  781. realized that

  782. this was

  783. the exact

  784. time

  785. at which

  786. Jesus had

  787. said,

  788. your son

  789. lives.

  790. The end

  791. result,

  792. so he

  793. and his

  794. whole household

  795. believed.

  796. And I think

  797. by now

  798. in this account

  799. as we come

  800. to this moment,

  801. we realize

  802. that believed

  803. here does

  804. not mean

  805. in just

  806. the superficial

  807. sense

  808. or in the

  809. flawed sense.

  810. It means

  811. in the full

  812. sense

  813. that he

  814. is

  815. the Messiah.

  816. I mean,

  817. ironically,

  818. Jesus said,

  819. unless you see

  820. a sign,

  821. you will never

  822. believe.

  823. And yet,

  824. Jesus gave

  825. him a sign

  826. and he did

  827. believe.

  828. he did

  829. come to

  830. believe

  831. in the

  832. true

  833. deep

  834. sense,

  835. to trust

  836. this one

  837. and his

  838. words.

  839. So what's

  840. here in

  841. this account

  842. for us

  843. today?

  844. Well,

  845. I think the

  846. first thing

  847. that we

  848. don't want

  849. to miss

  850. is how

  851. we see

  852. the glory

  853. of Jesus

  854. in this

  855. account.

  856. We've been

  857. talking about

  858. that through

  859. this whole

  860. series,

  861. looking for

  862. those moments

  863. which reveal

  864. the glory

  865. of Jesus.

  866. That's what

  867. John said

  868. that he

  869. saw of

  870. Jesus,

  871. his glory,

  872. how he

  873. was full

  874. of grace

  875. and truth.

  876. Well,

  877. how do we

  878. see that

  879. in this

  880. account?

  881. I think

  882. first of

  883. all,

  884. we have

  885. an easy

  886. time seeing

  887. how Jesus

  888. is full

  889. of truth.

  890. At the

  891. critical

  892. moment in

  893. the conversation

  894. as this

  895. man is

  896. begging

  897. Jesus to

  898. come and

  899. heal his

  900. son,

  901. Jesus,

  902. in one

  903. sense,

  904. it doesn't

  905. seem

  906. speak

  907. speaks out

  908. of grace,

  909. but he

  910. speaks the

  911. truth.

  912. He holds

  913. up the

  914. mirror of

  915. truth of

  916. what he

  917. knows to

  918. be true

  919. in their

  920. hearts and

  921. minds.

  922. You people

  923. are stubborn

  924. hearted and

  925. you don't

  926. believe,

  927. even though

  928. you've seen

  929. signs,

  930. many of

  931. you.

  932. so the

  933. truth,

  934. we see

  935. that all

  936. through

  937. this.

  938. But what

  939. about the

  940. grace of

  941. Jesus?

  942. How do

  943. we see

  944. that Jesus

  945. is full

  946. of grace

  947. in this

  948. account?

  949. Especially

  950. when it

  951. comes to

  952. that moment

  953. where Jesus

  954. kind of

  955. rebukes

  956. the man

  957. while he's

  958. begging for

  959. him to

  960. come and

  961. heal his

  962. son.

  963. Well, I

  964. think as we

  965. reflect on

  966. that moment,

  967. one of the

  968. lessons that

  969. we see

  970. there is

  971. that God's

  972. grace doesn't

  973. always come

  974. to us in

  975. the way

  976. that we

  977. expect,

  978. especially

  979. as it

  980. pertains to

  981. Jesus and

  982. his words.

  983. Jesus knows

  984. what's going

  985. on, not

  986. just in their

  987. hearts and

  988. in this man's

  989. heart, but

  990. in my

  991. heart, in

  992. your heart,

  993. in our

  994. thoughts.

  995. love.

  996. And

  997. sometimes

  998. it's a

  999. gift of

  1000. grace, it's

  1001. a thing of

  1002. love for

  1003. him to

  1004. tell us not

  1005. just what we

  1006. want to

  1007. hear, but

  1008. what he

  1009. knows we

  1010. need to

  1011. hear.

  1012. I often

  1013. think of

  1014. as an

  1015. example, you

  1016. know those

  1017. moments when

  1018. you were

  1019. eating

  1020. something and

  1021. maybe you

  1022. got a little

  1023. bit of

  1024. sauce on

  1025. your face

  1026. and you

  1027. missed

  1028. cleaning it

  1029. off and

  1030. you end

  1031. up going

  1032. for two

  1033. hours and

  1034. bumping into

  1035. all kinds

  1036. of people and

  1037. you've got

  1038. the sauce on

  1039. your face and

  1040. you don't

  1041. even know it

  1042. and none of

  1043. them even

  1044. says anything

  1045. to you.

  1046. Finally,

  1047. someone has

  1048. the guts and

  1049. isn't worried

  1050. about offending

  1051. you or the

  1052. awkwardness of

  1053. it and they

  1054. care enough

  1055. about you to

  1056. point out the

  1057. truth of how

  1058. you got sauce

  1059. on your face.

  1060. And even

  1061. though you

  1062. don't want to

  1063. hear that because

  1064. of all that that

  1065. represents over the

  1066. past two

  1067. hours,

  1068. you're thankful

  1069. for it because

  1070. they're telling

  1071. you that truth

  1072. holding up the

  1073. mirror to you

  1074. means that you

  1075. don't have to

  1076. go the next

  1077. two hours with

  1078. all these people

  1079. that you're going

  1080. to bump into

  1081. embarrassing

  1082. yourself.

  1083. And so,

  1084. yes,

  1085. sometimes it's

  1086. a gift of

  1087. grace to

  1088. hear not

  1089. just what we

  1090. want to hear,

  1091. but to hear

  1092. what we need

  1093. to hear.

  1094. Sometimes those

  1095. hard truths,

  1096. those words of

  1097. correction,

  1098. of feedback,

  1099. those things that

  1100. expose what's

  1101. not good in

  1102. us.

  1103. And I believe

  1104. that it is a

  1105. gift of grace

  1106. and Jesus was

  1107. full of grace

  1108. even as he

  1109. said these words

  1110. to the man.

  1111. Maybe he was

  1112. thinking the

  1113. moment was

  1114. something like

  1115. you're here

  1116. for a miracle,

  1117. but as a

  1118. gift of grace,

  1119. I want to

  1120. help you to

  1121. see the

  1122. bigger picture

  1123. of what's

  1124. really going

  1125. on here.

  1126. It was a

  1127. gift of grace

  1128. that Jesus

  1129. did the

  1130. miracle for

  1131. him and

  1132. granted his

  1133. request.

  1134. But I think

  1135. in some

  1136. ways,

  1137. an even

  1138. bigger gift

  1139. of grace

  1140. came in

  1141. the fact

  1142. or in

  1143. the way

  1144. that Jesus

  1145. did it.

  1146. With that

  1147. initial word

  1148. of rebuke

  1149. or correction

  1150. followed by

  1151. granting this

  1152. miracle in

  1153. a way that

  1154. would force

  1155. this man to

  1156. make that

  1157. decision,

  1158. am I going

  1159. to really

  1160. trust you

  1161. and really

  1162. believe

  1163. or not?

  1164. as a

  1165. result,

  1166. a bigger

  1167. gift of

  1168. God came

  1169. to this

  1170. man and

  1171. his son

  1172. got not

  1173. just life

  1174. for a few

  1175. more years,

  1176. but life

  1177. forever,

  1178. eternal life.

  1179. That's what

  1180. Jesus has been

  1181. promising to

  1182. those who

  1183. believe.

  1184. Another way

  1185. that we see

  1186. the glory of

  1187. Christ is

  1188. in the

  1189. authority

  1190. and the

  1191. power that

  1192. Jesus wields

  1193. in this

  1194. situation.

  1195. Think of

  1196. this from

  1197. the perspective

  1198. of the

  1199. official.

  1200. This man

  1201. in front

  1202. of him

  1203. speaks

  1204. and 17

  1205. miles or

  1206. so down

  1207. the road

  1208. his son

  1209. begins

  1210. to heal

  1211. and get

  1212. better and

  1213. recover and

  1214. the fever

  1215. leaves him.

  1216. This is

  1217. amazing.

  1218. I mean,

  1219. who can

  1220. do

  1221. something

  1222. like that?

  1223. This

  1224. Jesus

  1225. speaks

  1226. and

  1227. the

  1228. power

  1229. of

  1230. God

  1231. to

  1232. heal

  1233. and

  1234. give

  1235. life

  1236. is

  1237. unleashed

  1238. 17

  1239. miles

  1240. down

  1241. the

  1242. road.

  1243. This is

  1244. something

  1245. that no

  1246. mere man

  1247. can do.

  1248. It's

  1249. evidence

  1250. that Jesus

  1251. really is

  1252. the son

  1253. of God,

  1254. the Messiah,

  1255. that he

  1256. has

  1257. the

  1258. authority

  1259. of his

  1260. father

  1261. and the

  1262. power

  1263. of God

  1264. himself.

  1265. Finally,

  1266. this

  1267. story

  1268. leaves us

  1269. with a

  1270. big question.

  1271. and I

  1272. think the

  1273. question

  1274. comes from

  1275. Jesus'

  1276. words in

  1277. verse 48.

  1278. Unless you

  1279. people see

  1280. signs and

  1281. wonders,

  1282. you will

  1283. never

  1284. believe.

  1285. That last

  1286. word,

  1287. believe,

  1288. is

  1289. critical.

  1290. What does

  1291. Jesus want

  1292. from these

  1293. people,

  1294. from this

  1295. man?

  1296. He wants

  1297. them to

  1298. trust him,

  1299. to listen

  1300. to his

  1301. words and

  1302. believe

  1303. them,

  1304. to come

  1305. to see

  1306. the truth

  1307. of what's

  1308. really going

  1309. on,

  1310. of who

  1311. he is

  1312. and what

  1313. he has

  1314. come to

  1315. do for

  1316. them.

  1317. Do you

  1318. believe?

  1319. Put yourself

  1320. in the crowd

  1321. there that

  1322. day.

  1323. Do you

  1324. believe that

  1325. Jesus is

  1326. the Messiah?

  1327. Do you

  1328. believe that

  1329. he's the

  1330. son of

  1331. God?

  1332. Do you

  1333. believe that

  1334. the words

  1335. he speaks

  1336. are the

  1337. very words

  1338. of God

  1339. and are

  1340. true?

  1341. And do

  1342. you believe

  1343. them not

  1344. just superficially

  1345. up here,

  1346. agree with

  1347. them,

  1348. recognize that

  1349. they're from

  1350. God,

  1351. but do you

  1352. believe them

  1353. in here?

  1354. Do you

  1355. embrace them

  1356. as reality?

  1357. Do you

  1358. embrace him

  1359. as that

  1360. one whom

  1361. God has

  1362. sent into

  1363. the world?

  1364. This is the

  1365. big question

  1366. and the

  1367. response of

  1368. the people

  1369. that day

  1370. is

  1371. unbelief.

  1372. It's

  1373. stubbornness.

  1374. It's

  1375. skepticism.

  1376. They want

  1377. Jesus to

  1378. do another

  1379. sign,

  1380. another

  1381. miracle,

  1382. and they've

  1383. already seen

  1384. some signs

  1385. and some

  1386. miracles.

  1387. Jesus is

  1388. saying,

  1389. I've given

  1390. you enough.

  1391. Now,

  1392. listen to

  1393. my words.

  1394. Accept

  1395. them.

  1396. Believe.

  1397. Believe.

  1398. see that

  1399. this

  1400. stubbornness

  1401. and skepticism

  1402. is there

  1403. in your

  1404. own heart.

  1405. I think

  1406. Jesus

  1407. wants the

  1408. same of

  1409. us.

  1410. Do you

  1411. believe?

  1412. Do you

  1413. believe my

  1414. words?

  1415. Do you

  1416. believe the

  1417. words of

  1418. Jesus?

  1419. Do you

  1420. believe that

  1421. he is the

  1422. son of

  1423. God?

  1424. were you

  1425. waiting for

  1426. a sign?

  1427. Perhaps a

  1428. personal

  1429. miracle of

  1430. some sort?

  1431. Jesus is

  1432. not just

  1433. an

  1434. entertainer

  1435. or a

  1436. performer.

  1437. He's not

  1438. just come

  1439. into this

  1440. world to

  1441. give us

  1442. whatever we

  1443. want.

  1444. The reality

  1445. is Jesus

  1446. has come

  1447. to give

  1448. us something

  1449. even better.

  1450. He has

  1451. come to

  1452. give

  1453. true

  1454. life,

  1455. eternal

  1456. life.

  1457. He has

  1458. come to

  1459. give

  1460. forgiveness

  1461. from God.

  1462. He has

  1463. come to

  1464. give

  1465. salvation,

  1466. deliverance

  1467. from the

  1468. justice of

  1469. God that

  1470. is coming

  1471. upon our

  1472. world because

  1473. of our

  1474. sins against

  1475. God.

  1476. He has

  1477. come to

  1478. offer you

  1479. peace

  1480. between you

  1481. and God

  1482. restored

  1483. relationship

  1484. with him.

  1485. The key

  1486. to receiving

  1487. all of

  1488. this is

  1489. faith,

  1490. it's

  1491. belief.

  1492. And it

  1493. very much

  1494. oftentimes

  1495. looks like

  1496. the kind

  1497. of faith

  1498. that he

  1499. was calling

  1500. the official

  1501. to have,

  1502. the kind

  1503. that is

  1504. going to

  1505. trust

  1506. his words

  1507. and believe

  1508. even though

  1509. we may not

  1510. be able to

  1511. see with

  1512. our eyes

  1513. just what

  1514. he has

  1515. promised

  1516. yet.

  1517. Jesus

  1518. is not

  1519. a miracle

  1520. dispensing

  1521. machine.

  1522. Jesus

  1523. has come

  1524. to call

  1525. you,

  1526. to call

  1527. me,

  1528. to put

  1529. our

  1530. trust

  1531. in him,

  1532. to put

  1533. our trust

  1534. in God,

  1535. to a

  1536. trust

  1537. kind of

  1538. relationship

  1539. with God.

  1540. So the

  1541. question his

  1542. words leave

  1543. us with is,

  1544. do you

  1545. believe?

  1546. do you

  1547. believe?

  1548. Let's

  1549. pray.

  1550. Father in

  1551. heaven,

  1552. we thank

  1553. you for

  1554. these words

  1555. which you

  1556. have given

  1557. us.

  1558. We thank

  1559. you that

  1560. we get

  1561. to see

  1562. what

  1563. happened

  1564. a little

  1565. bit and

  1566. what was

  1567. said that

  1568. day.

  1569. Oh God,

  1570. I pray and

  1571. ask that you

  1572. would give

  1573. all of us

  1574. who are

  1575. listening and

  1576. watching ears

  1577. to hear,

  1578. ears to hear

  1579. what you

  1580. said to

  1581. the people

  1582. that day

  1583. and what

  1584. you are

  1585. saying to

  1586. us.

  1587. We ask

  1588. that you

  1589. would help

  1590. us to

  1591. trust you

  1592. more and

  1593. to believe

  1594. you for

  1595. the things

  1596. which you

  1597. have said

  1598. as great

  1599. or as

  1600. impossible

  1601. as they

  1602. may seem

  1603. or feel

  1604. to us.

  1605. We thank

  1606. you that

  1607. you are

  1608. a gracious

  1609. and

  1610. honest

  1611. savior.

  1612. We love

  1613. you.

  1614. We pray

  1615. this in

  1616. Jesus'

  1617. name.

  1618. Amen.
